The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range door glass
On April 11, 2014 at approximately 9:30am I was sitting in my living room and heard a loud explosion with the sound of flying glass. I immediately rushed into my kitchen to find the glass on my Kenmore electric range had exploded sending glass about 20 feet. The oven was not on and has not been used in a couple of weeks. I contacted Sears/Kenmore and they told me that since I no longer had a warranty then all they could do is send out a tech to fix it. They said they had no clue on why this happened. After researching online I found that this problem has happened to several customers.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Range/oven
4/9/14 Consumer stated that the electrical range/oven became inoperable, she noticed that the electrical connections had completely melted wires off of the box on the back of the 220 outlet but is not sure when this occurred. A few months ago she smelled an odor like an electrical fire which lasted for a week intermittently without the range being on. Two weeks ago the front left and right burners failed to operate whenever it was turned on.
4/8/14 The oven was powered on and it preheated at 350 degrees, however, during the cooking period it stopped working. The contents were half way cooked at the time this occurred.
6/2012 She contacted the warranty department for servicing the range because of the buzzing noise it was making on and off. They inspected the unit and stated that there was no problem with it.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet. Consumer feels that this range/oven poses a fire hazard and should be recalled. The product is not affected by a recall.

No one hurt Made Apr 7, 2014, sent to the company Apr 15, 2014, published by CPSC Apr 29, 2014
The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric smooth top stove/oven combination white. Model # 665 92014102, Serial # RM1917492
I have a Kenmore smooth top stove/oven combination. It was manufactured in 2003.
This afternoon my wife made two loafs of homemade bread in the oven. She set the oven at 350 for 29 minutes. We went outside to work in the yard. 20 minutes later the smoke alarms in the house started to sound. We entered the house to find it full of smoke. My wife pushed the cancel button to turn off the oven. She took the two loafs of charcoal outside.
I started opening windows and getting fans out to get the smoke out. My wife told me the broiler was on and would not shut off. We pressed the cancel button on the display which indicated everything was off but the broiler burners were still on. The broiler must have started on its own. To shut it off I had to trip the breaker. I allowed the oven to cool before turning the breaker back on. Upon turning the breaker on the broiler started again (display didn’t indicate anything was on).
I am thankful we didn’t set the timer on the oven to start while we were gone or we could have had a fire.
After calling three numbers and getting a run around I finally was able to talk with someone that basically said they could send out a repair man for a minimum charge of $75.00. I wasn’t satisfied with this so I requested to speak with the manager. The manager was very professional but all he could offer me was 10% off of a service call. I no longer feel comfortable using this oven even if it does get “repaired”.
We left our windows open for a couple hours (about 62 degrees out). Everything still smells like smoke.
I am not happy about this! Shouldn’t a company stand by there product. This is a major hazard! These units should be recalled!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Drop-in model # 750.45594901
Kenmore Electric Range model 790.45594901. When opening the oven door, the door handle was unattached on one side. As I attempted to repair the door handle by opening the door and screwing back in the screw from the back side of the handle, the entire glass front of the door shattered, sending small shards of very sharp glass all over the kitchen floor and cutting my foot in the process. I have two main concerns:
1 - Why did the screw holding on the door handle come loose?
2 - Why did the glass front of the door shatter?

No one hurt Made Apr 5, 2014, sent to the company Apr 14, 2014, published by CPSC Apr 28, 2014
The product, in the report: Electric Kenmore freestanding smooth top range.
On March 25th I had used my oven in the AM then turned everything off and left about two hours later, I returned home after being gone about 5 hours and could smell something as soon as I entered the house, and within seconds, I was in my kitchen and my oven burst into flames. Everything was off, I quickly grabbed baking soda and opened the oven door and threw it on the flames, putting the fire out.. The upper and lower coils continued to glow bright red and would not cool down. My husband had to turn the breaker to the stove off before the elements would cool down, and as soon as we tried to turn the breaker back on the coils could glow bright red. we now have to leave the breaker off and are without a stove until we can get this one replaced. I researched this range and found there were numerous complaints of the same issue. I have contacted Sears with no satisfactory response. Our neighbor had this sane thing happen to his Kenmore Range yesterday. This is a definite safety hazard and someone may not be as lucky as I. If I had returned just minutes later, I am certain my kitchen would have been in flames. I think this product needs to be recalled to prevent this from happening again and something disastrous happening. Thank You [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model 790.9742 (the latter four digits are the color -according to my owner’s manual)
I had just finished baking macaroni and cheese at three hundred fifty (350) degrees for twenty minutes. I removed the dish from the oven, set it on the counter, and closed the oven door. The outer glass in the closed oven door shattered and spewed across the floor with a loud explosion. I wish to note that this is a replacement door. A similar incident occurred on the morning of October 24, 2013. I filed a report, including pictures, with the CPSC after that incident. This door, the subject of THIS incident report, is the replacement door that I paid to have Installed after the October incident. Please note that this door exploded five (5) months after the previous incident. The October 2013 incident occurred in the morning before the oven was turned on. It was cold. All uses of this stove have been well within what is conventional usage. We have used it only for baking and broiling. After the October incident, I went to the Sears web site to look to see if others had reported similar experiences. I noticed that there were quite a few questions about replacing the oven door on the model of the stove that is the subject of this report. There were also reported incidents of the glass spontaneously exploding on their web site. I suggested to Sears and to the CPSC (on both of your web sites) that this was likely a product defect. I also warned that the potential exists for an individual, or child to experience serious injury if their faces are in the vicinity of this door when it ‘destructs’. I still believe that to be the case and seriously ask that a recall be Issued immediately.! have pictures of the results of the incident that is the subject of this report.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 790 Electric Flat Top Range/Oven Model No. 790.991223403 Serial No. VF50732638
Just yesterday we were preheating our Kenmore Elite 790 and the control panel caught fire and spread to the wall. Thankfully I was in the kitchen and was able to grab a fire extinguisher in time. I have made numerous phone calls but because the unit is out of warranty I have been unable to get anywhere with Sears and Kenmore. They seam indifferent to the apparent risks that this unit poses.
I have read descriptions of situations similar to mine at the link below:
https://www.sears.com/community/questions/kenmore-electric-range-model-790-control-panel-burned-out-in-less-than-5-years/
I have found out that Frigidaire actually manufactured the KE790 that I have, and interestingly enough the serial number matches that of a Frigidaire recall for fire hazard. I wonder whether or not this unit was intended to be included in the 2009 Kenmore recall and if so, consumers should be instructed to cross reference both the Frigidaire recall list and the Kenmore recall list. Considering the fire danger this unit poses and the fact that it may have been intended to be part of the earlier recall, I believe that this unit should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Kenmore range model # 790.95662102
We had an issue with our Kenmore range which, if we had not been paying attention, would have absolutely resulted in a fire.
My wife was cooking a cake in the range, on bake @ 350 degrees. After 15 minutes notice smoke in the kitchen and when we opened the door noticed that the top of the cake was burnt to a crisp and that the temp of the oven was well above where it should have been. What we also noticed is that the broil element was on, apparently full strength. Thinking this was human error, we attempted to shut off the oven and restart with a new batch. At that time we were unable to turn the oven off and after a few minutes, recognizing that this was a dangerous situation, switched off the main breaker to the stove. 30 minutes later when things had cooled down, we turned the oven onto bake, 350 degrees and after about 1 minute noticed that the broiler element came on, full power, and was unable to turn it off using the switches on the stove. Killed the breaker again and unplugged the stove permanently. After further inspection we noticed that the paint around the vent on the stove had gotten so hot that it had bubbled.
To sum it up:
1.) Stove will go from low bake to full broil without the user knowing creating a dangerous situation which could result in a fire 2.) Stove will not shut off once it is in this state
I’ve contacted Sears/Kenmore directly and they only stated that there were no recalls on this model and could help in any other way.
I’ve googled this Kenmore model and see identical reports from other consumers. There’s even a youtube video reporting the exact same scenario http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0eBsTy-9qM, exact same model as my stove.
Thanks

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range, Model 790.92209018 Serial VF31372766
My son purchased a home last fall, complete with new appliances. The Kenmore electric range worked fine until last week. My daughter in law was home with her daughter. My daughter in law did not turn the oven on, but simply put a box of pizza in the oven to keep warm. Approximately 5 minutes later, the kitchen filled with smoke and started shooting sparks from behind/underneath the oven. My daughter in law was able to pull the range from the wall and unplug it. This could have been a real tragedy. I am unable to find a recall on this product and would like any assistance you could provide.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Double Wall oven - lower oven only, electric wall oven
Kenmore oven glass door exploded (not shattered) throwing glass bits all over kitchen floor and counter. I read that it is safety glass, but it projected hard enough that I felt those glass pieces hit my arm as it exploded. It is 3 days later and I am still sweeping up glass. The glass front of the bottom wall oven exploded when I touched the handle to open it. “Toughed” it. I didn’t even get the door open. The oven has not been turned on since December 2013. I only keep a skillet and pan in it because I use them every other day or so. It had not been on, not hot for months. In fact, I was just getting home and needed the skillet that I leave in there. The model of the oven that shattered is 790.47769405. I have not contacted Sears because from the other complaints I found on the internet, they will not take responsibility and I honestly don’t have any time to make a wasted call. I am keeping small children and pets out of that part of the kitchen for the next couple of weeks because I am still finding pieces of glass. This is very dangerous. Consumers need to be made aware of the possibility of that glass front exploding. If my 6 year old niece, or any small child or pet had been standing near that oven when the glass exploded, they would have gotten glass in their face. That is very dangerous.

The product, in the report: Kenmore range/oven, 790.9642240c. Glasstop, self-cleaning.
I have a Kenmore glasstop range/oven. Model number 790.9642240c. I was trying to preheat it when I got a message and beep on the display. The message was F10. I turned the oven off, but it turned on again spontaneously. No matter what I did, it kept turning on and continued to get hotter and hotter. I finally pulled the stove away from the wall and unplugged it. I called Sears. They took my information, told me that there was no recall when I asked them, and said that they could send someone out to repair the appliance. I declined because I have already gone around and around with Sears about a dishwasher that continues to have the same electrical problem over and over again. I am not paying a few hundred dollars to fix something that will not stay fixed. I am totally disgusted with Sears. I have also read other posts on this site from people who have had similar problems.

Kenmore elite stove started smoking and gave f10 error code that could not be cleared out as stated in manual. Oven was super hot and could smell electronic burn smell as well as smove from interior of oven as if it was in clean mode. Originally i had the main board replaced over 4 years ago under a sears extended warranty and was told i should not see any more problems. The stove apparently overheats and it is unknown if heating element stops heating as i could not get response from the clear button. I had to flip the breaker to disable. I am very concerned as i read online the amount of people with this same problem on this model, it also concerns me that some kenmore elite products of the same years had problems. I believe this model may incure problems but was not as widely sold due to its price.

After about three minutes, her daughter stated that she smelled something burning. Seconds later, the cinnamon rolls were on fire. The outside of the oven was so hot that she couldn’t touch it. Her daughter opened the oven, took the pan out and threw it outside. The pan was so hot, the spot where it landed on the outdoor carpeting melted. An F10 code showed on the stove. The consumer’s daughter advised her that that was an indication that something bad had happened with the stove. The stove was disconnected at the circuit breaker. The consumer stated that they no longer have the product because they needed the space for the new stove that they purchased. Consumer made sure that the oven’s controls were in the off position and has not used the oven since the date of the incident.
The next day, the consumer called Kenmore. The mfr’s rep. took some information from the consumer and sent him a replacement glass but no technician has come to install it.
The replacement glass is the wrong sizes for the oven.

The product, in the report: Kenmore glass top range
We have a Kenmore glass top range. It was bought in 2002, and granted, has some age on it, but we have never had any problems with it. Our SN# is VF15120691 and Model# is 790.95201100. after using the bake function, turning it off, and then using broil, I cut the oven off. Problem was, the element on the bottom came back on and would not go off. Tried turning bake function on then back off, but element still heated up and seemed hotter than the 350 degree setting I had used. Only way to turn it off was to turn circuit breaker switch off. After 15 minutes or so, turned breaker back on and turned bake on, and lowered temp to it’s lowest setting, 170 degrees. Element still began to heat up to a high temp. Turned breaker back off. Searched for recalls on this product, and talked to Sears but found no recalls.

I was baking a batch of oatmeal cookies, I heard a loud pop and instantly smelled a burned electrical smell. I went out and found that the Kenmore oven had stopped and had no power to it. We pulled out the range and found that the whole electrical computer on the range had burned up. We replaced that computer and then had more problems. We then found that the bottom element that is covered by the bottom metal base of the stove had shorted out and quit working. I looked online and found other smooth top Kenmore ranges were recalled and believe mine should be added to the list. Others had cabinets start on fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite smoothtop (e.g., glass top) slide–in style electric range, model number 790 46999 1000 serial number NF 12608551
I have a Kenmore Elite smoothtop (e.g., glass top) electric range, model number 790 46999 1000, serial number NF 12608551 manufactured in June, 2001 in Canada and sold to me by my local Sears store here in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001. It is a slide–in style rather than a freestanding style. It should have been among the 200,000 Frigidaire & Kenmore smoothtop electric ranges recalled on August 27, 2009 & April 5, 2011 by Sears after investigations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission but it was not included in either. The same range was also recalled by Sears Canada on August 26, 2009.
Like the freestanding models that were recalled mine heats to different temperatures than selected, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. Specifically, it has only two possible temperature settings: high and off. When you turn on the range top, no matter what temperature you select, from Lo, 1 through 9, or High, the range top element heats immediately to the highest setting and remains there regardless of adjustment until it is turned off. This does not happen as a single or occasional incident. It happens every time the top of the range is in use. (The oven works fine. Just the range top is malfunctioning and getting worse as time goes by. High is getting hotter.
I have talked to Sears about it many times, including in person in the store where I purchased it. Sears has been totally unresponsive. This slide-in range is identical to the freestanding models that were recalled with the same combination rotary dial controls for the cook top and digital controls for the oven. On my range, because it is a slide-in model, the controls are on the front rather than the back, but they are identical to those pictured in the documentation for the recalled ranges. I am a lifetime customer of Sears, having always bought all of my high end kitchen and laundry appliances from them. This will no longer be the case. This is a very dangerous product and I do not appreciate Sears’ lack of corrective action on selling this defective “top of the line” product and not taking action to correct the defect.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Select Clean Self-cleaning electric range model 665.95802
I have a Kenmore select clean self-cleaning electric range model 665.95802 that was purchased in July of 2000. This evening I was using the oven to make dinner, set at 375, for a little over an hour when the buzzer beeped and displayed the error code E2 F3. When I opened the oven door I was suprised to see the broiler element aglow. Thinking that I had accidentally turned it on, I immediately punched the CANCEL button and left the door ajar. After 10 minutes it was obvious that the element continued to heat and I resorted to unplugging the oven. After it had cooled down, I plugged it back in and the broiler element began to heat up. Doing quick research on this issue I found many threads with other people having the exact same problem. At this point in time I am unable to use the stove top because the broiler element heats up when the range is plugged in.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range with Warming Drawer
My oven (which was set at 350 degrees) heated extremely hot, filling the house with smoke. Then, when I tried to turn the oven off, the heating element remained on and on high heat. It would not turn off. We had to trip the breaker to get the oven to turn off.
After researching the problem on the internet, this seems to be a recurring issue with Kenmore ranges. I was fortunate that it happened when I was home, as it seems that these ranges can turn themselves on and not turn off. If this had happened when we all were at work, my house might not be standing right now.

The glass in the front of our oven exploded in the middle of the night (about 12:30 am). I had used the oven in convection mode for about 20 minutes earlier in the evening to cook some fish but the oven had been off & well cooled. It just exploded without any reason. The oven was a Sears Kenmore and was 3 years old. No one was in the kitchen last night but if someone or one of the pets had been by the stove, they could have been injured. The entire front piece of glass blew out.

Our kenmore Elite electric range model#790.4661 which we have owned for five (5) years caught on fire. My wife called the fire department, they quickly responded and put it out, upon there inspection they said it was not our electrical or grease, but it was the control panel. Apparently it shorted out or something and flames started shooting out of it. I goggled the problem when I got home, and am finding out we are not alone in this issue. I am not sure what to do from here, but I am sure that this could have been a lot worse and people need to know. I can not get to the serial no. The product, in the report: Electric Range/Stove
Broil element on a Kenmore electric range comes on without any input from the consumer and cannot be turned off using the controls on the appliance. This happened once before about 5 years ago. In that incident, I flipped the circuit breaker and the oven reset. This time it will not reset and the broil element comes back on as soon as the power is on. Note that the display will not indicate that the oven is on when this occurs so you are alerted by the strong smell or the visible glowing red element. The display works fine and indicates any input from the consumer to include broil and bake. However, if you turn the broil off, the display indicates that nothing is on, but the broil element remains on. The only way to turn it off is to disconnect the power. The product, in the report: Kenmore glasstop stove, convection oven, stainless steel model 790.97453804 Serial is hard to read it is either VF or VP 95173704
We bought our Kenmore oven model 790.97453804 in January of 2010, within the first year our oven door exploded shooting glass all over our kitchen and into the adjacent room. We raised a stink with Sears and tried to get a replacement oven, even the local manager fought for us but sears corp would do nothing but repair it. We were assured it wouldn’t happen again. Then the next year our stove started smoking (coming from the top of the oven where the controls are). We immediately killed the power and found out from the tech (the same one who repaired the glass) that it was only the circuit board, nothing to worry about. He was very nice but joked about how these units were junk and that we should not let our warranty expire as we would probably need something repaired yearly. We did let our warranty expire because we thought to ourselves if it breaks again we are getting rid of it! In our 3rd year of ownership the over door exploded again (this is the 2nd explosion). I called Sears and explained how once again, they were lucky we weren’t calling from a hospital and that they need to get this oven out of here. I even told them every incident that I would buy a different one from them if they would return this one, even if it cost more money I would spend the difference just to have something safe. I have small animals, young children.. We have a 5 yr old girl (now 5). She loves to help bake and could you imagine if she were looking through the glass at the time of explosion? I can only imagine Sears would take us seriously if that would’ve happened.. But why not take us seriously before an injury? When I spoke to sears the 3rd instance and pleaded for some kind of return even if not 100% they said nothing they could do, they said they were very sorry and had little children too and can only imagine what that would be like. Then for our troubles they offered us a 10% discount if we bought a new unit. We declined.
The reason for my post / report is because I firmly believe these units have an issue with the door. I also believe that Sears is ignoring this when they only choose to replace the glass and not the entire door. All these people I read on the internet are having their oven doors explode. If something isn’t done someone will get hurt, if they haven’t already. Plus you have all these people who are out money on these stoves they bought. I don’t recall exactly what I paid for mine, I want to say 1,200 to 1,500 maybe. I also want to mention the old stove I replaced when I bought this was from 1991 (one of the first glass tops ever), still worked perfectly, we only replaced this for the stainless look when we redid our kitchen. I learned since then that Kenmore was made by a different company in 1991, that is why it was built better.
I just ordered another stove as I don’t feel safe using this one anymore. I do not know what to do with this stove. If I sell it used will I be putting someone else’s child at risk? I can’t live with that. I called my attorney and am waiting to hear what they say. Otherwise I assume we will have to scrap it and just learn that Sears doesn’t deserve our business, ever.
Does anyone here know of other options to try and recoup some of our loss?

Kenmore glasstop electric range was heating to (high/boil) when only set at a low temperature setting. Burner was then failing to turn off when swithing the burner to the off position. The only way to turn off the burner was to turn off the breaker in the breake box (eliminating power to the unit). This happened with the original burner, and on at least replacement parts. It is occuring again and this time happening wth two different burners. It is creating a fire risk that the burner is not turning off when it should.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore stove/oven with glass cook top, 3 regular and one dual-range burner. Rotary knobs.
On more than one occasion, my glass cook top (Kenmore) has failed to shut off when the burner knob was turned to the off position. It has also produced constant “high heat” regardless of what heat setting the knob is turned to. This has caused damage to cookware and a minor burn to my hand when I grabbed a handle that should not have been hot to the touch, as the stove was on low. I found a recall that described these problems, but my stove’s serial number was not listed.

We have a Kenmore Pro 27” Glass Cooktop Model No. 790.40553801 that turns one of the burners on high heat without the knob being turned on. My wife found it this way at 5:00 AM this morning while we were all sleeping. We had bananas sitting on the counter next to it that it burned. This is the second incident, with the first occurring within 6 months of purchase. The first time the product was repaired by a Sears Technician who replaced the entire control panel. This second incident has occurred within a month of 2 years since the repair. The knobs cannot be turned to turn it off once this happens. The only means of turning it off is to shut the power off at the breaker. If the breaker is turned back on the unit will again turn on to high heat and stay in that setting until the breaker is turned off.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Wall Oven
In regards to my 2009 Kenmore wall oven (model number: 79047789406).
Was cooking in my oven at 400 degrees when out of nowhere the outer glass of the oven door exploded all over my kitchen, throwing glass all the way to the other end of my dining room and also going under the door into my office and utility rooms. I had two small children, under the age of two, who were sat in the dining room, about 15 feet away, playing on the floor and while fortunately they were not injured, the were sprayed with glass and terrified after the incident. The glass was over 20 feet away from where the oven is. I have not used the self cleaning function of this oven, I have not closed the oven door on the wire rack, and certainly have never hit the glass door with anything. This product is entirely unsafe and a recall should be issued to prevent injuries or children being sprayed with glass.

The oven was on bake and preheated on the lowest temperature that it has. All the sudden the room got very bright, and the oven was on fire. The fire was contained to the interior of the oven. The product, in the report: Electric Smooth-top Range
Caller is reporting her electric range that she purchased on January 7th, 2005 and had no problems with it until Christmas Day/December 25th, 2013 when she was baking muffins at 400 degrees after preheating her oven. She had them in the oven cooking for approximately five minutes when she saw sparking from vents area at the back of the range, the control panel was lighting up then black smoke from the same area began filling the kitchen.
The breaker was tripped by the incident and the caller pulled the range out and unplugged it.
The smell in the kitchen was compared to that of an electrical fire.
There are no injuries to be reported
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: The part that caught fire was the electrical control board, part 316418750, a $200 part. According to what I have found out, many other owners of the Kenmore Elite model # starting with 790 have had the exact same problem. Some have tried to report this problem to Sears/Kenmore but it seems to keep happening.
Instead of replacing this part on my oven, I decided to replace the whole oven for safety. I didn’t want this to happen again. The website I found the other complaints like mine is www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/Sears-Kenmore

Stove is only 6 yrs old. 6 weeks before that large rear burner started acting up...only had high or nothing....then popping sound small amount of smoke...then quit working. These stoves should be recalled for a fire hazard. I called Sears they they couldn’t do anything out of warranty, but would happy to offer me a 1 yr warranty for $269.00. My husband took off the back to look at the damage and the whole top of the simmer select relay switch had blown completely off. These ranges are very dangerous, please recall!

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller is reporting his electric range that he purchased around August in 2005. He had no problems with the range until the first week in December when the broiler began coming on by itself and continued to heat to higher and higher temperatures until he noticed heat coming from the oven area. He checked the range which was turned off then he flipped the breaker to break the power supply. He doesn’t remember cooking anything at all that entire day. He is reporting this range as a fire safety issue.
Index finger on left hand burned but needed no medical attention He contacted the manufacturer December 9th and 10th, 2013 but they had no desire to create a report because it is out of warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Range, Model 790.99123409 Smooth Top, Conventional and Convection Oven
Kenmore Elite Electric Range is unresponsive to control panel. My wife was using the front right burner on our electric smooth top range, and the burner failed to turn off when she pressed the on/off button on the control panel. I switched the circuit breaker off to turn off power to the unit, and when I turned the power back on, the burner came on, despite the fact that we had not touched the control panel.
A similar problem was covered by a recall in 2009, but our model was not part of the recall. At the time, this problem was described as a significant fire and burn risk.

Caller stated that the oven was turned on at 350 degrees for approximately 30 mins, when her spouse alerted her he smelled smoke. She opened the oven door and saw that the heating element appeared glowing red. She was unable power it off from the control panel it was switched off from the circuit breaker. The control panel also displayed a code she had never seen before. There were no prior incidents or service call for this unit.
(12/8/13) The manufacturer was contacted through email but she did not receive any response as yet. She is concerned that if no one was present at the time it could have caused a house fire. She researched the recall and noticed that her model was not listed. She feels that this electric oven is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

Caller reported that her oven glass door blew out, shattering glass pieces all over. There were glass pieces that projected about 5 feet, pieces were lodged in her hair, on her clothing etc. No injury was sustained. She is concerned that this is a dangerous defect in the unit and they have been numerous complaints on the issue and it should be recalled. This is a safety issue and fearful it can occur again
12/8/13 The manufacturer was contacted and a service called placed for 12/9/13. She was informed that the repair would be at her expense.
The product model number is not involved in recall.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: On 12/7/13 my 15 month old grand daughter was sitting on the kitchen floor 3’ from the range. If this had occured the day before (12/7_, she would have been severely injured. Possibly, with glass fragments in her eyes and face.
This occurrence is not from normal wear and use. I feel this may be a defect in the glass portion on the oven door.
I was preheating oven at 350 when this occurred. I heard a “pop” and then the glass blew out. Shattered all over the kitchen. I still have the glass pieces in a plastic bag. Service Tech was to be here on 12/28 and never showed. It has been rescheduled for 1/4/14.
When our your site there was a video and the range that this also happened to looks identical to my Kenmore range

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Glass Top Electric Range 790.9611240D white in color
11-26-13 Fixed dinner using one top burner on the stove model #790.9611240D for my mother. Turned the stove off and she ate dinner and went to bed. About 1.5 hours later her dog woke her up very agitated. She got up to see what was the matter and went to the kitchen. The oven was on fire. The oven had not been used in over a year !! She grabbed the dog and cell phone, went outside and called 911. Fire dept and paramedics came and I was alerted of the incident when I called to wish her a good evening. I raced to the residence and she was transported to the hospital with CO inhalation. The Carbon Monoxide was very strong and was 4 times the level in her blood that it should have been. She was admitted to the hospital for 2.5 days and kept on oxygen to clear her blood. THE DOG SAVED HER LIFE !!!!
I have read many incidents involving these stoves with burners coming on and off at will, ovens switching themselves to broil or self clean while baking cookies, shattering front glass windows, and the list goes on and on. There was evidently a recall on earlier models of about 300.000 units back in 2009. This unit was built after that time as have been many others still exhibiting very serious issues. I purchased the stove 12-10-2009.
I could have been making funeral arrangements instead of having Thanksgiving with my Mom !!!

The product, in the report: white, speckled black and gray glasstop, white/glass oven door Kenmore
We bought a warranty on our glass top range. Days after the warranty expired, we noticed that when we turned off the front left burner, it wasn’t really going off. This was both a general safety and fire hazard because we almost touched the burner, half an hour after it was supposedly off, and we had left the room, etc. That was over a year and a half ago. Now, the burner also sparks if we try to turn it on. (We have gotten it to stay off and are no longer using that burner). I went online and noticed Kenmore had several recalls due to a similar situation. My model # wasn’t eligible for the recall. Therefore, I’ve contacted Kenmore twice, asking for a response. I haven’t gotten any response from them. Thank you

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top (glass) range, white
Kenmore range Model 79092702013, s/n VF22177166 was being used for oven, at 375 F, and back right burner on medium. Oven door was about a third open when it was pushed closed. When the door closed, it jarred the oven slightly. At the time, the house lights flickered, and the power on stove went out. The breaker had tripped. When it was reset, it immediately tripped again. After waiting for 5 minutes, and making sure that the burner was turned off, the breaker was tried again, and immediately tripped once again. Stove was pulled out, and unplugged. The access panel in the back was removed, to find that the black power connection had come out of it’s plastic holder, and ‘welded’ itself to the metal access panel cover on the frame. In essence, it had made the shell of the oven attached directly to the hot wire!!! In addition, the red wire connection had melted into the plastic holder - not sure if it was touching the metal chassis at this point or not.

My wife was using her model 665.95002102 electric range this afternoon to bake a cake. We heard a beep and she went to the oven to take a look. An error code was on, so she opened the oven door. The cake was on fire and smoke bellowed out of the oven. The broiler element was on and red hot. Turning the oven off did not turn it off, so we quickly turned off the breakers. If we had not been close by, this accident would have resulted in a serious fire in our kitchen! While searching online, I see that this may be a common problem that many others have experienced. Is this a malfunction that may have been or should be considered a safety recall? VERY DANGEROUS!

A small fire was created in a pan in the oven due to the constantly heating top burner. The circuit breaker had to be turned off to shut down the oven. The product, in the report: Electric range
I have a Kenmore model 790 electric range that I purchased in 10/2010. I set the oven to convection preheat to 355 degrees. At about 325 degrees the front glass on the door spontaneously exploded, shattering glass across the entire kitchen floor. Fortunately, no one was near the range when the incident occurred. I called Sears and they gave me a 4-hour appointment window (3-7pm). The technician never called or showed up. It wasn’t until I called Sears again that I was told he ordered the glass and I was given an appointment for the glass to be installed. I have complained about the technician’s behavior as well as the fact that it seems there is a flaw in the design of the large glass viewing area which makes it susceptible to breaking. I am dissatisfied with the quality of this product as well as the way Sears is handling the fix. Unfortunately, there is no recall of this product at this time.

Consumer stated that she is experiencing similar problems of 09-333, the front left burner will not turn off, the unit has to be unplugged to power it off. When the range was removed she noticed scorched marks near the switch for the burner. Hazard: Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that the model was not affected by the recall and to contact the agency.
She feels that her model should be added to the recall.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Turned on the stove to preheat, hear loud pop looked up and control panel was on fire. Thankfully my husband was able to grab bottom of unit stove and pull out from wall, unplug and put out fire before my house burned down. If my husband had not have been right beside the stove my house would have caught fire.

The product, in the report: I have a Kenmore Range, model #665.95002102. I was baking a frozen pizza at 375 degrees for 20 minutes to return to find it burned. I turned the oven off, but didn’t think to check it until going back 15-20 minutes later. The heat coming from the oven was so intense it could be felt three feet away from oven. I then noticed that although the oven was off, the BROILER was on instead of the baking coil and I could not get it to turn off. The oven did not turn off when the off button was pushed! We had to turn off breaker to get oven to turn off. It was too hot to move to unplug. MAJOR safety hazard! When my research found that this has happened to other people with Kenmore ranges, instead of having it repaired, we bought a new range that is NOT a Kenmore. VERY disappointed….

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Range
On 11/16/13 I was mixing up a batch of cookies while my Kenmore Elite electric range was preheating. I went to open the door to put in the pan of cookies and I only opened the door about 3-4 inches when all of a sudden it just shattered all over me and my kitchen. I have never used the self cleaning mode and have cared for this oven by following all rules in the manual. For no reason at all this door glass shattered everywhere!
