The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model #66595781000 Serial # RK3723136
On Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 8:00 pm the top element in our Kenmore Model #66595781000 electric range come on by itself. The only way to turn it off was by turning off the circuit breaker. It is now 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 7, 2013 and we turned the circuit breaker back on. The broiler is still on!!!
This is a huge safety hazard. We now have to keep the circuit breaker flipped off all the time. I called Sears and they claim that this is not a common problem. However, the internet is full of complaints and incidents related to the exact same problem with the exact same range.
To have them come out here will be $239. The part itself, if we were to install it, is $200. Sears should rectify this obviously known issue for free, or provide a credit towards a new SAFE range.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Select Clean Self-Cleaining Electric Range (White Free Standing)
The broiler in our Kenmore Range model# 665.95802 has suddenly started turning itself on and refusing to turn off until the excessive temperature safety shutoff turns it off. I did a search online and found quite a few other instances of this model exhibiting this problem as well as finding a recall for a different Kenmore range model for this same issue.

The product, in the report: oven/stove combination
I returned home from a business trip to find my Kenmore oven was on and extremely hot. The knobs were in the off position. The indicator light was off. The oven had turned itself on! Luckily, there was no damage....just emotionally upset of what could have happened. The oven/stove unit was purchased in 2000 when we moved into our home. Model #911.95582990 and Seriel # 9T187804Q. I have done some research and see that there were other model #’s recalled because the Stove top turned itself on...thus causing some serious damage/death. I have also read where there are Kenmore ovens that have turned themselves on as well...however, they have not been recalled like the other models have....probably because nobody has been killed or seriously injured.???? How many complaints/damage does it take to have an appliance recalled? This is scary stuff.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
Electric Smoothtop Range being reported was in home when callers purchased it in January 2010 and the house was approximately three years old at the time.
Around June 2010 caller began noticing while cleaning that the right, rear burner would be warm when it hadn’t been used that day. This incident kept repeating which made the caller realize that the burner was turning on by itself. She called repair who informed her that it was being caused by a small electronic part which he replaced and that specific burner has not had any occurrences since that time.
June 24th, 2013 mid cooking classes being conducted by caller with her 22yr old Autistic son, when she walked away just a moment her son began calling her. She walked back and the front left burner was flaming red, she checked the dial and verified that it was still only set at 4 but the heat coming from the burner was extremely intense and the burner was vibrant red. She and her son verified that no food or liquid had dropped on the burner and that it was clean. Caller moved the pan from the burner, turned the dial to off but the burner would not turn off. The caller turned the knob a second time in the opposite direction, heard a pop coming from the knob then the burner began cooling off.
June 25th, 2013 her son was cooking, caller was outside when she heard a scream. She and her husband both ran for the kitchen where they were met by their son who explained to them that the burner wouldn’t go off again. She went to the range where her son had moved the pan from the left burner over to the right burner. She checked again to be sure that it was the burner, that it hadn’t been turned up. The dial was on 4 again but the burner was red hot. Again the caller turned the knob, burner wouldn’t go off then again she turned the dial/knob a second time in the opposite direction, heard a pop coming from the knob then the burner began cooling off.
June 27th, 2013 caller, her son, his helper were all present he set the dial to 4.5, put his meat in the pan, browned it, drained it and was beginning to put the seasoning into the meat when she heard high, rapid sizzling as if the meat was cooking too quickly. She checked the burner, dial was at 4.5 but the same burner was at extremely high temperatures. They moved the pan off the burner. Caller began the same ritual;turned the knob, burner wouldn’t go off then again she turned the dial/knob a second time in the opposite direction, heard a pop coming from the knob then the burner began cooling off again. Caller and her husband performed a test with the two front burners and couldn’t repeat the incidents.
This morning July 1st, 2013 callers realized they may either not be testing long enough or not have a pan on the burners while testing. They and their son were cooking breakfast this morning, had been cooking for approximately fifteen minutes when they noticed that the left front burner was flaming red, no liquid or food was on it and the dial was still set at 4.5.
Callers have not contacted the manufacturer and do not intend to contact them because caller said they already know that the manufacturer will do nothing for them.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore smooth top range
WE have recently experienced a kitchen fire (May 2013), with appliance and smoke damage that has cost our insurance company over $17,000. It has also cost me the $500 deductible part of the policy which I would like to recover. We believe the fire was the result of a defect in the electric range we purchased from Sears in 2007. The problem we believe is the rotary knob control switch for the left front burner. The burner does not go off when the switch is turned to the off position. This happened twice, the first time within 2 years of when we bought it and the second time causing the recent fire. The range in question is a Kenmore smooth top model #790.96122409, serial #VF71312207. I cannot find a recall notice or class action suit for this model number and am curious as to any information you may be able to provide me regarding this particular appliance.

The consumer says the oven switches from bake to broil by itself. He says the top burner in the oven sometimes wont shut off. The consumer says there was a pie on fire on one occasion. He says that he has to shut off the circuit breaker in order to get it to shut off.
The consumer says that a technician came out in 2011 who just tapped on the box in the back of the unit and got it to start working. The tech told the consumer that it could work fine for years or it could break down tomorrow. It worked well for about another year before this issue started happening again.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” freestanding smooth top cook stove
I have a Kenmore smooth top cook stove. Which has begun having the same issues as in current recall Release # 09-333. The burner elements will get stuck on while cycling to maintain set temperature control. Burning extremely hot and will not turn off; even when you remove the pan or turn the control knob to the off position. It happened once or twice with one burner over the past year, I didn’t think much about it. But, over the last few days it has happened every time I have used either one of my front two burners. Things will burn in the matter of seconds; even while keep a close eye on it. This very dangerous situation is what prompted me to check recalls in the first place. However my model number is not included in the list. Model # 790.96009601 serial # VF73870449. I called the sears recall line anyway; thinking they would help, but my range is out of warranty. I did not buy it at Sears, it came as part of the appliance package when I bought my new house in 10/2009. I really do not believe that warranty should be the issue; but the hazard that this product poses. I feel that this recall should be expanded to cover more model numbers.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range with Ceramic cooktop
On Sunday evening, June 16, my husband was getting ready to bake cookies. He was pre heating the Kenmore Electric Range Serial #VF13552457 Model #790.92202014 when I told him that something did not smell right. I started looking around the oven and the range looking for something that might have been put inside of the oven by mistake or on top of the range by mistake. I thought maybe someone had put something too close to the vent. It smelled like plastic burning. I didn’t find anything and he went ahead and cooked the cookies.
The next day was Monday, June 17, 2013. I turned the oven on to bake a pie crust. As soon as I pressed the bake option on the control panel on the back of the range, the control panel immediately turned off by itself with snapping sounds, popping noises and then flames started pouring out of the back of the range.
I froze not knowing what to do. Call 911 or grab the fire extinguisher? I called for my husband,[REDACTED], who was in the living room. He rushed in and looked and immediately went to the breaker box and shut off the power to the range. That caused the fire to go out but not without damaging the range and the wall behind the range.
We bought our Kenmore Electric Range from our local Sears Store in Paris Texas in Sept. 2011.

Callers purchased electric range around December 2006. They had issues with both front burners stayinng on high heat and not turning off. Callers contacted the manufacturer for information, they were advised that there was no recall, not on warranty and that the consumer would be charged approximately $260 for repair. Thursday, June 13th, 2013 caller’s husband was cooking dinner when he saw a flash coming from the rear area of the range. He was able to turn the range off so did not unplug the range. However it has turn on by itself when not being used prior. Can only be stopped by turning off circuit breaker and waiting for 1-2 hour before will work normally. Electric Smoothtop Range purchased with home estimated to be 11/02/2002.
Caller had no problems with the range until the week of June 2nd _ June 8th when she was baking a turkey and the right front burner on her range switched from off to on and began heating.
Caller turned the oven off then kept a tea kettle on top of the range to cool it so that the glass didn’t become cracked.
She does not use the oven for cooking/baking with the exception of possibly once every six to ten months.
No injuries are being reported
Caller contacted the manufacturer June 11th, 2013 to create report with them. She was advised only that her range is not on the recalled list but that she could pay for repairs, labor etc and they would set up appointment.
She is asking for repair at manufacturer expense because she states that although her range is not recalled it is exhibiting the same hazards.

The product, in the report: Electric Range/Oven
Caller stated that she was experiencing similar problems with her smoothtop electric range as other consumers with the same model number that she had noticed reported. Although the range cook top was off it became exceedingly hot, she had placed the oven at 385 degrees and it appears as if the temperature had increased and there was smoke emitting from vent of the oven. The unit was unplugged to prevent a fire. She has since replaced the range.
Although caller had experience problems of Release # 09-333, her model and serial was not part of the recall.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet. The caller does not believe this incident should have occurred because the range is only 2 years old. She feels that this range should be investigated for a recall.

The consumer says her and her husband were sleeping. At 5AM she heard a strange noise. Her husband walked out to the kitchen and stepped on small pieces of broken glass. The range had not been used since May 28th, the incident occurred May 30th.
The consumer says there was no reason or cause for the front glass panel to open and shatter. She says this is a definite concern for anyone who may have the same range. The consumer says she has 6 grandchildren.
She says if this has happened at a different time in the day when they would be crawling around the kitchen. this could have caused a serious injury.
The consumer called to the manufacturer and was told to call back later that day at 7pm. She called back and said they could not do anything for eight days. They will send someone out and is scheduled for June 8th. She feels this is unacceptable. She asked to speak to a supervisor and was hung up on.
The consumer says she can use the stove top but cannot use the oven.

The product, in the report: Electric range with glass top.
Top front elements of range do not respond to control inputs. Once turned on the elements do not turn off when the knob is switched to “Off”. Problem has been progressively getting worse. At first I was able to eventually get burner to shut off by continually alternating the switch from the “On” to “Off” positions but now the burner will not turn off at all, it stays on high heat. I had to pull the range away from the wall and uplug from the outlet. As soon as the range is plugged back in the burner turns on even with the knob in the “Off” position.
Service from Sears has been extremely lacking. Calls are all directed to an offshore call center where the employees are trained to divert your concerns into an extended warranty sale. They are offering a $500 voucher towards the purchase of a new Sears appliance if your existing appliance cannot be fixed. The cost of the extended warranty is $275. They are also apparently unable to provide a technician for a service call in less than a week. Essentially this warranty offer seems like admission to a product deficiency without admission that there is a significant quality and safety concern associated with this product.
I will probably replace the range but would like to see Sears take responsibility for a poorly designed and unsafe product by recalling all models associated with this problem.

The product, in the report: Electric Smoothtop Range
The consumer says that for about a month now the rack collapses when trying to get the food out. She has been burned a few times.
She contacted the manufacture who send out a technician who said the interior lining of the oven is bowed. He says that is why racks on the inside of the oven to fit. They offered her $600 to repair the unit. She did not have any issues with the unit prior to this incident. They wanted consumer to pay $600 to fix it.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: I just wanted to make a comment, Sears did not want to do anything. They say unless there has been a recall or if someone gets seriously hurt, they cannot fo anything. I’m very disappointed they feel this way. Now I have a stove that I really don’t want to use because of this. I spent good money for this stove and no one wants to hear about this. I will never use Sears again, they do not stand behind their customers. It’s not like the problem is a coil gone bad, we are saying it’s very dangerous and could cause someone to really hurt themselves.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range smooth top electric range with single oven Model 790. 92309010 Ser # VF04543817
On May 14, 2013 at my residence of [REDACTED]. A 2.5 year old Kenmore Electric Smooth Top electric Range. 790. 9210 Black. While in the kitchen, the oven turned on to preheat, the top control panel arched continuously as flames erupted from top leading edge of the right side of the control panel face and out from the back of the range. It was not until the breaker in the basement was turned off that the arching stopped and shortly thereafter the fire burned itself out.
The fire department was called and confirmed that the fire was out. The fire department took the range out of the house. A fire marshal inspection took place the next day. In calling Sears, I was advised there was no warranty or coverage for this loss. Sears made no mention of a recall. It was by CPSC web search that we learned of the recall. I called Sears back, brought this recall to their attention and their response was much different. The end results of the call to Sears remains unknown to us.

I was preheating the oven, when an explosion occurred causing fire in the oven. I immediately shut the oven off. When my son looked at it, he found that not only had the element blown out on the oven but it had burned a hole about 2 inches in diameter in the bottom of the oven. It should be noted that the oven on this stove had not been used very much.

The consumer stated that his wife was baking at 350 degrees, on 5/12/12 for 1 hour. The range had been off fro 24 hours. The oven cooled down. The front glass of the oven door shattered. The majority of the glass landed about two feet away. Three were shards about six feet way from the stove. The consumer stated that this is not the first time that it happened. It happened about two years ago.
The consumer stated that he cleaned up the glass, took pictures and went to Sears.
He has an appontment with the branch manger on 5/15/2013.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER:
Consumer spoke to the brand manager at Sears Deptford, NJ on 5/15/13, he said Sears is not responsible, it is an Electrolux problem. He also said, he never heard about this problem. Consumer said he should check the internet as there are numerous people who have had the same problem, and claimed they reported it to Sears. He gave him some sites to go on. He called Electrolux as instructed and spoke to two different people, who told him that once it is distributed to Sears, it was no longer their problem and told him to call Sears. Electrolux people gave him a 800 number for complaints, and consumer spoke to two different people who informed him it was an Electrolux problem. As you can see, consumer got the run around. Hopefully Electrolux addresses this problem before someone gets hurt . This explosive glass is a serious safety hazard.

The right front burner on my Kenmore Elite will not shut off. This happened a few years ago and we repaired the range. There was a recall at the time. Now it’s happened again. I noticed what I was cooking was burning even though I did not have the burner turned up very high. I lifted the pan off the burner and saw it was red hot. I turned the burner off and it stayed red hot. I had to shut off the breaker for the appliance to get it to shut off.

I was making dinner and after cooking my fish I put the oven in “keep warm” mode. I went upstairs to put my son to sleep. Approximately 15 minutes later I smelled smoke. I came downstairs to discover that the broiler had spontaneously turned on and the oven was at its maximum temperature and the food was burning. I turned off the oven which resolved the problem. This problem, where the oven spontaneously turns on the broiler has recurred multiple times. The oven was serviced on 11/1/10, 9/22/11, 12/15/11, 1/10/12, 2/23/12, and 1/18/13 for this same problem. In early January 2013 the oven did this in the middle of the night on a Friday night while in “Sabbath Mode” Had the smell of smoke not woken up our dog we would not have known that the oven was overheating.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore electric range with glass top self cleaning
Hi. I have a Kenmore electric range#790.96102800. a few months back the wiring caught on fire on the back of stove and we were told that the harness was bad and needed to be replaced. we did that. Tonight, May 3, 2013 we were using the oven set at 450 degrees and I noticed smoke there was a lot of smoke when I looked in the oven window the oven was on fire. When the fire finally got put out we realized the bottom heating element in the oven had shattered. We also have noticed with this oven when we go in kitchen at night we can see the element light dimly lit. I believe this oven should be recalled. It has caught fire twice in 6 months.2 different issues. One time while it was not in use and one time while it was in use. When I call to report this problem I get no help and they told me its my wiring when we have already had our wiring checked when the first incident took place. im also told they can not even take a look at the oven for at least 3 weeks so therefore I will not have anything to cook on until they come out and it still wont be fixed that day because of parts needing to be ordered and besides because it caught on fire it is all charred and doubt it will even be able to be repaired. I feel Kenmore needs to be held responsible for this. As I read online I am not the only person with a Kenmore oven that has had these same identical issues.

At about 2 pm this afternoon I set a casserole into my Sears Kenmore range, turned on the oven and went to the kitchen table to work. I heard loud bangs and after looking around realized that blue flames were shooting from the back of the clock on the range. The kitchen filled with black smoke while my husband ran for the circuit breaker. The wall behind the range was black with smoke but remained undamaged because it is a relatively fire resistant surface. The range however is not working and is melted and charred behind the clock.

The caller stated that while his spouse was using the oven at 400 degrees for baking, the temperature started to increase approximately 30 minutes later. The heating elements were extremely hot, which appeared red. She was unable to power it off, the circuit breaker was used the switch it off. After a few mins the circuit breaker was switched on and the oven powered back on. He unplugged the baking part of the oven. There were no prior services.
The elements were red to yellow and no change in degrees. The only code showing was (DR).
Approximately 2 years ago there was a similar incident, however, when the circuit breaker was switched back on, the range did not power on.
4/28/13 The manufacturer was contacted and he was advised that a part would be sent out a cost of $200. However, he does not know if the part that will be sent out would resolved the issue. He feels that the range after 11 yrs should be able to function properly without a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Ultra Bake Oven. Self-cleaning oven with smooth surface cooktop
Kenmore Ultra Bake Oven Model# 665-95029101. Serial number RM1212947.
On three occurrences this past weekend, the top oven burner came on and would not turn off using the oven controls. Had to cut power by turning off the circuit breaker to prevent a house fire. On the first two occurenced, the oven was set to “bake” at 400 degrees. When the item in oven began to burn due to the oven overheating, I saw that there was an error message on the digital oven readout. The oven controls would not respond, so I turned the oven off using the house circuit breaker. On the third occasion, only the stovetop burner was in use when the oven burner came on by itself. Again, an error message came on and the controls would not work. The house circuit breaker is turned off to prevent a potential house fire.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
The consumer says the broiler element in the oven came on by itself and would not turn off. His wife had to unplug the unit to get it to turn off. The consumer was not home at the time. When he got home he shut off the circuit breaker and cut it back on again.
He then turned on the range. The broiler once again cut on without being turned on and would not shut off. The consumer had to unplug. The consumer tried to contact the retailer/manufacturer who said the unit is not on recall and there is nothing that they can do. The consumer says that he would hate to see this happen to someone else and catch their house on fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range, Model 790.9446-9700, Serial #VF74739964, purchased in Nov or December of 2007
I purchased the smooth top Kenmore Electric Range in 2007. We have not had any problems with the stove until the week of April 15, 2013. On Tuesday my husband was cooking vegetables in a pot on top of the stove. He pushed the simmer button and we heard this extremely loud noise. I was quite a distance away in another room and heard the sound like someone dropping an iron skillet on the floor or some other type of sound similar to iron plates colliding together. The sound was very loud. I came into the kitchen to find out what happened and my husband then informed me that when he pressed the simmer button, that’s when the stove made the loud sound. After that happened, the stove will not turn off. Even though the stove or oven is not hot, the “element on” light remains on 24-hours a day and the stove makes sounds as if it is on. We have unplugged the stove but have not been able to get the light to go out. The sound was very disturbing and we don’t know what caused it or what type of damage was done. When I read Kenmore had recalled some stoves in the past and I read what happened to those stoves, I felt like that was very similar to what happened to my stove.

The product, in the report: Kemore Elite Smoothtop Range Model # 790-42739400
I am writing about Kemore Smoothtop Electric Range, Model 790-42739400, Serial # NF50315950, manufactured Jan, 2005. On two seperate occasions while I have been cooking, I have “lowered” the heat to “Lo/Simmer,” only to have my food boil to the point that all of the liquid was boiled out/evaporated (since it didn’t just “simmer”), causing the food to burn & char and make disgusting smoke permiate my house.
I looked on your website and found that 200,000 similar Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Ranges (models 790.99012 790.99013 790.99014 and 790.99019) were recalled for the exact same reason; however my model was not listed.
This seemed impossible to me, so I called the Recall Hotline on the recall and I spoke with Sears’ Recall person. I told them that the pot of food smoked and could have caught on fire because of the burner “BOILING” my food instead of “Simmering” it on “Lo” the way it was supposed to. They told me my model has not been recalled, and said if I want a service call on it then I can pay for a service call.
I want to bring this product to your attention because Sears seems unconcerned that this model might have to be included in the recall as well.
I consider myself lucky. This stove could easily cause a fire in someone’s home. We were lucky to have nothing more than a ruined pot (melted handles from the heat) and a horrible smell in our house for several days...
You’re welcome to come look at the stove if you want to, so you can see it boil on “LO” for yourself.
Thank you for all you do, and for keeping so many families safe.

The product, in the report: Electric dual oven slide-in
On 23 Mar 2013, my wife and I purchased a Kenmore dual oven electric range from Sears. On 31 Mar 2013, my wife had something baking in the top oven (we used all week with no issues), but thought she would make a cake, so she placed the lower oven on 350 degrees and after about 20 mins the oven glass exploded and shattered into a million little squares. This happened after one week of our purchase of the range. The outer shell glass did not break, just the inner glass and then another inside glass appeared to be okay, but I am certain that it is damaged to some degree. We immediately called Sears and reported the incident and they scheduled a technician to come out to make the repair. On 2 Apr 13, a service technician came out, but had to order the two necessary pieces of glass requiring installation. On 11 Apr 13, two pieces of glass arrived and after inspection seemed in order, but it was covered in plastic, which was not removed. On 13 Apr 13, a service technician showed up and began repairing the door, but my wife notice two pin holes in both pieces of glass about 4 inches apart (perfectly 4 inches on both), so the technician thought it to not be a good idea to replace it and just simply order the entire door to be installed.
I feel this is a recall in progress and feel that one of two things havhened here: 1) the manufacturer has went to a lower grade glass to save money or 2) a machine is making the holes in the glass before it becomes more solid and is causing them to be defective. Both technicians informed us that if there are any imperfections in the glass it will more than likely shatter, it’s just a matter of when. I have never heard of oven glass shattering, but after this incident went on line and was amazed that this is common, but businesses don’t appear alarmed. If my wife had opened the door as it exploded it would have been horrific or if a child was standing in front of the door when it exploded...God forbid.

The product, in the report: electric smooth-top range with oven
The range and oven were in the off position. When the consumer woke up one morning, he noticed a hot odor in his home. He discovered that heat was coming from the top of the range.
The oven was on and heat was emitting from the right rear burner (if one is facing the oven). The consumer attempted to adjust the knobs to turn the oven off, but the controls had no effect. The consumer tripped the circuit breaker to turn the oven off. That bottom heating element inside of the oven became so hot that it melted into 2 pieces. Damage was limited to that element.
The consumer later removed that element and will use the cook-top as needed.
NOTE: The right front burner (if one is facing the oven) stopped working approximately 3 years ago. The consumer never had that burner repaired.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top electric range. Model number 790-9600-9601. Purchased new from Sears, August 2007.
In August of 2007 I moved into a newly constructed home and purchased a Kenmore appliance package through my builder which included a smooth top range, fridge, and dishwasher. Over the past five years we have had nothing but problems with your appliances; from a broken ice maker (after 2 months of use), to a dishwasher that will only run on one cycle. These issues are great annoyances, but not nearly as concerning and shocking as our most recent problem with our smooth top range; model number 790-9600-9601.
The issue began with the front left burner. I noticed that when attempting to cook on a low to medium setting, the burner would only cook on high heat, so naturally I avoided cooking on that burner. Shortly after realizing I had a faulty range, I realized just how dangerous my Kenmore range was. The back left burner began turning on spontaneously and would glow red hot until we unplugged the range or tripped the breaker in the basement. I feel fortunate that I was home to realize this problem and that it did not take my house burning down to find out.
Upon realizing the severity of our service needs, I immediately began researching to see if others had experienced something similar with their Kenmore range. I found an overwhelming amount of complaints and posts along with four Kenmore ranges that had been recalled for identical problems. My next step was to contact Kenmore to find out if my range had been recalled. I assumed that it must be; as my complaints were identical to those which had been recalled. After three unanswered e-mails, four redirected phones calls and frequent requests made via social media and Sears Service Center, I finally got a live person on the line who told me my model number had not been recalled, and that I would have to pay for a service person to come to my house if I wanted anything done.
I find this to be ridiculous. I have reported a range that could potentially burn my house down due to mechanical failures identical to those that have been recalled. So why hasn?t my range been recalled? Why is it that Kenmore is not willing to do anything to rectify this situation? And why, to top it all off, is Kenmore?s customer service so terrible? I will not stop until this situation gets taken care of. It is unacceptable to wait until someone gets hurt or a house burns down to recall this range, and it is unacceptable to ignore service requests from concerned customers.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top self cleaning electric range.
The oven was set to 350 degrees F to bake a pie. After one hour smoke started pouring out of the oven and the pie was blackened. Pressing the off/cancel button gave an F1 error, but the oven continued to heat. It could only be turned off at the circuit switch. We thought maybe it would “reset” itself and turned the circuit back on. The oven came back on immediately and again the off/cancel button would not turn the oven off. This could have resulted in a fire if I had put the oven on a low (keep warm) heat and left the house. The tempurature just gets hotter and hotter.

Stove starts on its own at night. The stove when found heated up flashed the F1 code and would not shut off. Had to run to the 220 breaker to shut it off. NOT SAFE AT ALL! turned the breaker back on and the bottom element in the stove started running by itself so the whole system must be screwed up. Already aware that there was a recall but not on this ??? Please this is a total recall issue!

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore 30” Electric Range
On April 6, 2013, at approximately 12:45, consumer began preheating her oven to a temperature setting of 350 degrees F (not in Convection Mode). It was the first time it had been used on this day, and it had been operating normally since it was delivered in 2005. At approximately 13:00, she noted that the unit had not yet “beeped” (an indication that it had reached the setting temperature). She opened the oven and observed, on a hanging thermometer, that it had reached 350 degrees, so she placed her a caramel-pecan bars (in an aluminum flat pan), on the center rack. After closing the over door, she selected the “Timer Set / Off” button on the control module, entered “20:00’ [minutes] from the module keypad, and then pushed the “Start” button on this same module. Upon pushing the “Start” start button, the module began sparking from the vent area behind the module, followed by visible flames, also from the vent area behind the module. The flames lasted for approximately 10-15 seconds. She wasn’t quite sure what to do at first, but then pushed the “Stop / Clear” button on this module, at about the same time the flames were going out. With flames and smoke no longer visible, she contacted her husband, on his cell phone at 13:14 to report what had just happened. I directed her to pull the stove away from the wall, and unplug the large plug (220 VAC plug / outlet) at the base of the appliance. She was able to do this. There was no need to notify the Fire Department, as the fire had extinguished itself.4 Upon returning home that evening, I noted soot on the wall behind the appliance, in the area of the control module. On the morning April 7, 2013, I began photographing the fire damage with my cell phone. During the course of my examination, I took numerous photographs; these photographs are available upon request. I pulled the appliance away from the wall and examined the 220 VAC plug and outlet. I noted no signs of arcing and no abnormal discoloration. I noted that the 40A Circuit Breaker for this appliance, located in a 100A Service Panel, in the NE corner of the basement, had “Tripped”, de-energizing the appliance circuit. I noted that damage appeared to be most visible in the area of the control module, located on the back, upright portion of the appliance, between the individual stove top controls. This damage corresponded to the soot stains visible on the painted drywall behind the appliance. I then removed the back protective panel, in proximity to the control module. I noted soot on both the inside and outside of the panel, in proximity to the right (as you are facing the appliance) portion of the control module. I noted that damage appeared to be primarily contained the internal portion of the module / back side of the circuit board, which was enclosed in a black plastic frame. The wiring harness to / from this module appeared intact, was soot stained in proximity to the right module area, but otherwise undamaged by heat. I noted no melting of insulation or arching of the wiring harness and its components outside of the control module frame enclosure. I noted “spatter” debris in the sooted areas of the white enamel appliance frame, adjacent to the aforementioned damaged area. Based on my examination of this damage, and all the information available to me at this time, I recommend that an engineering evaluation of this control module be done, so as to determine both the probable failure mode and its likelihood to reoccur in other, similar appliances. It is also my opinion that had readily ignitable materials and / or an excessive grease accumulation been present at the time of this faulting, the heat energy generated by this faulting control module would have been sufficient to extend this fire beyond the appliance. The appliance Repair is scheduled to replace this control module. The damaged control module will be simply unplugged from the wiring harness by the technician and retained by us for further engineering evaluation. Regarding the use of this appliance, it should be noted this it had been used more often than most similar units—for daily meal preparation, but also especially for baking items for friends, coworkers, and charitable events. [REDACTED] will typically turn the oven on, and then do all her baking for the day, at the same time. [REDACTED] keeps the appliance exceptionally clean and free of food / grease accumulations. On April 9, 2013, the control module was replaced with a new module. Upon turning the appliance on, it indicated a “Cook Top Failure”. An additional module will need to be ordered and replaced at a future date.

The product, in the report: Electric four burner self cleaning range
Caller purchased her electric range in August 2002 while building a new home and had no problems with the range until around the beginning of February 2013 when it began heating to a higher temperature than it had been set to heat. The circuit breaker had to be used to cut power to the range because it was impossible to turn off at the appliance. The first time this happened they left the circuit breaker off overnight then reconnected the power in order to use the top burners, however, the oven came on by itself and heat escalated to 500 degrees. Callers immediately disconnected the breakers again. This incident has occurred maybe ten times since the first incident (every time they attempted to use the range) within the past two months.
Callers contacted the manufacturer around the end of February 2013 and were offered repair at their own expense with the service call charged at $75 or $100 plus their hourly rate. Callers declined this offer due to the safety issue involved and the age of the appliance.
No one has been injured
Callers would like to see this range on recall with repair or replacement at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smoothtop electric range. It is a free standing range. It has a white finish, and the cooking elements are covered by smooth dark glass that has a speckled pattern. There are two large burners in front, two small ones in back. The back panel has two knobs on each side to control the heating elements on the respective side of the stove. It is a middle of the line range, I belive it originally cost around $500. We purchased it from Sears in 2007
This is a smoothtop electric range by Kenmore.
Left front burner on stove is not able to be controlled by the knob. Once it is turned on, it just gets hotter and hotter. Adjusting the knob does nothing. You can turn off the burner but the burner will still keep getting hotter and hotter. You actually have to go and turn off the circuit breaker, and then wait for the element to cool off before restoring power to the range. If you simply flipped the breaker off and on, while the element was still hot, it would continue to heat up once power was restored.
I had two incidents of this back in October 2012, and just stopped using that burner. I told my husband about it, but he forgot. Recently he tried to cook something on that burner, experienced the same problem. He did not think to turn it off at the circuit breaker. The stovetop just kept getting hotter and hotter, and then there was a blue spark at the back of the stove (behind where the knobs are) and the power to the burner went off and the burner finally cooled down. He now knows not to use that burner.
No one was injured in these incidents, but I think we were just lucky. An issue like this could easily give someone a severe burn or set a house fire.
I see there is a recall on similar (more expensive) models of this type of range for the EXACT same issue, however my model/serial number is not listed in the recall, so I have to pay for a technician to come and repair the problem.

The consumer says she was warming up food on the burner when it started frying on its own. The heat element got extremely red. There was a loud “pop” noise.
She tried to lower the temperature but it would not. The front right burner started smoking and sparking. The only way she could get it to turn off was by unplugging the stove but it ended up tripping the circuit. She contacted the manufacturer who said it was not under a recall and that they could send someone out to repair it for a fee. She never had any issues with the unit prior to the incident.

I bought this range in early 2011 as a upgrade to my old [REDACTED] range. Just shortly ofter it went out of warranty the oven control unit failed. I called a repair man and a new one was ordered and replaced by him. Less than a year later the unit failed again, so I sent the defective unit back to the provider and they sent me a replacement. This lasted less than a year again until 3-2013, only this time it blew the breaker (it never had done that before) . Upon removing the back cover I was horrified to find the oven plug that plugs into the control unit MELTED! I only can say I’m glad it didn’t start a FIRE. I’m writing this complaint to worn people of a possible FIRE hazard. I’m junking this range

While my wife and I were in bed we heard a loud “bang” noise from the other side of the house. I went to investigated this immediately (occurred around midnight) I discovered localized smoke. I recognized it as electrical fire smoke. My wife and I cleared the rest house and found the smoke originated from the kitchen only. After examining various appliances, outlets, etc, we noticed the stoves front panel was not displaying the time. We pulled the stove out from the wall and saw burn marks on the wall and the back of the stove black from a spontaneous electrical fire/short. The back of the oven was very hot with some smoke still emanating from the device. We disconnected the stove from power. Device is a Kenmore Elite Range model #790.99022800
this just happened and I am filing this report while the situation is fresh in my mind. Due to the numerous accounts of this similar thing happening with Whirlpool/Kenmore stoves/ranges I thought it best not to wait to file a report.

The only way to turn them off is by shutting off the circuit breaker. The consumer says that he then has to wait about five minutes before turning it on again in order to avoid the same thing happening. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who stated the model number is not on recall. It started with the right front burner that was only doing this. Now both front burners are having this problem.

We called Sears/Kenmore about our stove which we purchaced new with home in 2006. The problem is that one burner on top is turning on and off by itself. Also that our neighors are having the same problem with theres. I was told that since it is now out of warranty that they wiil not fix it that I must pay to have it fixed even though it was a product failure not wear and tear issue. I was also told it is a known issue but until it becomes a big enough issue they will not do anything about it. I believe that this product needs a safety recall. This product is not safe and could start a fire resulting in thousands of dollars in property loss and potenial injuries and death. Expected resolution details: Replace stove

We have a Kenmore Electric smooth top range which came with new home in 2006. Model #790.96009600, serial #VF63346757. Upon new use, we experienced two of the burners either not heating correctly or the burners not turning off after knob was turned to off (and stays at HIGH HEAT). Repairman came out and inspected at that time but were told that there wasn’t a problem. The problem continues to happen periodically and if we do not notice it right away, it will stay on HIGH HEAT until you continue to turn the knob on and off repeatedly. Since the burners do not turn off when knob is turned to the off position, this poses a very dangerous fire/burn hazard!

First, every time we would turn on the stove it would blow our breaker. (of course it was still under warranty so we called to have a tech come out). We were told that there was nothing wrong with the stove but that it was our wiring or our breaker box. Shortly after the tech left the stove was working fine and we haven’t had a problem until 2 weeks ago. I decided to turn on the self clean and clean the oven then we used it one time after that. However, then next time we tried to turn it on it the bottom element would not come on, but the top heating element would. We then assumed that it was the heating element so we spent $125 on a new one. Only when we installed it the stove still would not work so we took the back off the stove. It was then that we noticed that the main board had melted and was all black and burnt at the oven wire. After reading many reviews about simular issues I am glad that our new kitchen did not catch fire this time. But now I have to pay more out of pocket to fix something that is only a couple years old.

The product, in the report: Smooth top electric range-White
On 5 Feb 2013, while my wife was baking cookies, our Kenmore Electric Range model 66595822003 failed with the oven burners permanently stuck in the “on” position. She attempted to power off the oven using the buttons on the control panel, but that did not work. When I arrived home 20 minutes later, the heating elements were still on and the range was beginning to get extremely hot to the touch even on the exterior. I immediately removed all electrical power by switching the circuit breaker to off. Once power was removed from the range, I opened the door to reduce the temperature in the oven and found the inside of the empty oven to be smoking heavily and well beyond the stated limit 550 *F. When we had an appliance technician examine the range, he found all the safety devices/switches on the range’s electrical system had failed and that had we not been paying attention to the range, it would have continued heating until it eventually would have caught fire. He agreed that the only way to stop the heating elements, even when the oven was not turned on, was to completely remove electrical power from the source.

The product, in the report: kenmore elite electric range, black, glass top, model #92029101, serial #RL3910421
I have a kenmore 30 in electric freestanding range with radiant elements. Model # 92029101, serial # RL 3910421. purchased in 2001. I have not found a recall, but noticed there was a recall on similar unit with same problem I had. My range oven would noit turn off after used for 10 minutes. I kept getting hotter and appeared to be off. The oven element did not turn off until we unplugged it. When we plugged back in, the oven burner immediately turned back on although, the digital screen appeared off.

The product, in the report: Electirc Glass top
Respondent was baking @ 325 for less than 30 minutes. The respondent noticed through the oven window that the broiler coil was lit. The consumer tried to power off the oven by using the control panel but the broiler element continue to burn. Even after the oven was powered off the broiler continued to stay on. Also the glass top of the range indicated it was hot because of the broiler. The consumer tripped the circuit breaker for about 30 mins then powered back on. Once the range was powered on the range indicated it was still hot and the boiler powered back on. The consumer then moved the range to unplug the unit for about 30 mins. The consumer plugged in the range and the broiler powered on again. The only was to get the broiler to power off is by tripping the circuit breaker or unplugging the unit.
The respondent tried to use the range a couple days later and had the same problem as listed. In order to cook the respondent purchased a portable burner to avoid using the range.
2/19/13- The respondent contacted the manufacturer ([REDACTED] service repair appt.), who stated they would send someone on 3/15/13. The landlord was contacted and told the tenant to pull the range outside and if she could afford to buy another range.

The product, in the report: Electric Range/Oven
The consumer stated that she had placed the oven to bake at approximately 350- 400 degrees. However, about 30 mins later she heard a popping noise followed by a crackling sound, she noticed that there were flames erupting from the rear of the oven. She was unable to power it off from the control panel, the display board was flashing, the circuit breaker was used to switch off the unit.
The consumer’s spouse then blew the flames out. The wall were the oven is located was scorched.
2/5/13 The retailer was contacted and a service technician was sent out 2/15, she was informed that the control board caught fire and it would be replaced under the warranty.
The consumer is concerned that this range is a fire hazard and should be reported.
UPDATE: On 2/22/13 a refurbished control board was installed by a Sears Technician. The burners worked when used once that day and then stopped working completely the next day. On 3/2/13, a Sears Technician came to our home and ordered a brand new control board. After he left, I attempted to use the oven only to find that it was not functioning properly. On 3/9/12, Sears installed the new control board. The burners appear to be functioning properly. I then tried using the oven and the following occurs: On the control board it shows the bottom element of the oven as being on and then after a few seconds it moves to the top element or shows no element on at all. This happens every couple of seconds throughout the heating time. My oven did not do this before the refurbished or new control board was installed!
