What the count covers
6,238 hospitals from Medicare’s own lists, among them the 723 free-standing rehab and long-term care hospitals, labelled by CMS’s type and also under Rehab and long-term care hospitals. The American Hospital Association counts 6,100 hospitals in the US, from its 2024 survey, and counts rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals among them, as this count does.

IHS’s Find Health Care map of IHS and tribal health facilities holds 46 hospitals run by IHS or by tribes and tribal organisations. 44 of them are in CMS’s files of the hospitals Medicare certifies (by name or address, or by the check of Oct 20, 2026) and shown from CMS’s records; 2 are listed here as run by IHS or a tribe and in none of CMS’s files. CMS’s Provider of Services file holds 6,012 active hospitals of the kinds shown here. 5,914 of them are on Care Compare’s lists (by Medicare number, name or address) and shown from them; 37 are listed here as Medicare-certified since 2025, not on Care Compare yet. Not listed: 7 new in the file with no certification on record yet and 54 certified before 2025 that no Care Compare list holds: the file can lag a closure, so one is shown only where a second current source says it’s open.
