Hurt, care not known Made Jun 15, 2015, sent to the company Jul 9, 2015, published by CPSC Jul 23, 2015
The product, in the report: Electric Range with four burners and a middle warmer
Kenmore electric range purchased the Summer of 2013. The caller had no problems with the range until June 14th, 2015 when the outside glass of the tempered glass door exploded and shot glass as far as 20 feet across the kitchen floor.
She notes that she had just used the self cleaning mode and it had completed the day before this incident.
The caller is reporting this incident as a laceration hazard if this glass was to hit a person especially in the eyes.
There are no injuries being reported other than a scrape on the caller’s finger obtained while cleaning the glass up.
She contacted the manufacturer the morning of June 15th, 2015 and scheduled a repair tech for June 16th, 2015.
She has asked that manufacturers re-examine standards of the tempered glass that is being manufactured before someone is injured severely.

The product, in the report: Kenmore oven model 790.92803010
While doing nothing but standing in my kitchen the front glass on my 4 year old Kenmore oven exploded into a million pieces. Model number 790.92803010. Lucky no one was injured or this would be a different report. Sears says there is nothing they can do besides sell me new glass and have my pay to have it installed.

The product, in the report: Glasstop Range
06/09/2015 - The consumer was using the front and left burner on HIGH for approximately twenty minutes. When the consumer finished, she turned off her unit and left the kitchen. Approximately thirty minutes later, the consumer went in the kitchen again and noticed the unit had not turn off despite the knob to the burner being off. The burner was still bright red, indicating it was still on HIGH. The consumer had to turn the breaker off the range in order for the burner to cease the emission of heat.
06/10/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer to find out if her unit is included in a recall. After explaining the situation, she was informed by a representative that they would not be able to inform her if the unit was recalled as she does not have an account with them and she is not the original owner. They explained that the system would not be able to look up recalls without first entering account information. If they created a new account for her, they would still not be able to search for recalls as they would not be able to connect the two and the unit would be shown out of warranty and no recalls would show up. The consumer was in disbelief and asked to speak to a manager, but was informed they were all in meetings.
The consumer used the rear and left burner and it worked fine however, she later noticed the front and left burner had been on despite her not having turned it on. This time, the burner seemed to be on either LOW or MEDIUM as it was not has red as initially. Again, she had to switch the breaker off.
The consumer indicates this is the first time she has had any issues with the range, as well as the first time this incident occurs. The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model 790.94464700 Glass top /Convection oven
Kenmore 790 Electric Range
Purchased for $1043 in November 2007. Shortly after original warranty expired one of the cooktop burners went out. A few months later, while baking in the oven the oven started to heat up exceeding the baking temperature and the panel began to spark and wires to burned. We quickly unplugged the range. We called a local licensed repairman who replaced the control panel. A few months passed and another stovetop burner went out. Then, in May of 2015, while using the oven it began to heat up past the 425 degrees it was programmed for. We tried to decrease the heat and the panel would not respond. We quickly pulled out the range and unplugged. We believe this is a hazard after looking online to see if it had been recalled and finding a number of situations like ours. I called Sears to report and they will do nothing about it so I told them I was obligated to report this to Consumer Protection as it is too dangerous to be in a consumer’s home. I have been forced to purchase an new range for the protection of my home and family.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
The consumer stated that her daughter in law turned on the preheat (350/375 F) mode in the oven. The consumer stated that she walked into the kitchen about 2 minutes later and heard crackling sound. She saw flames coming from the back of her range.
The consumer stated that the flames were about 3-4 inches high. The consumer’s husband cut the circuit to the range. Her son used a fire extinguisher while waiting on the fire department.
The consumer stated that the wall is charred from the flames. The microwave above the range has also turned black.
The fire department came out within 15-20 minutes and moved the range outside for safety precautions. They informed her to not use the microwave until it was inspected.
The consumer contacted the retailer on 05/28/15.
The consumer had a technician from Sears come on 6/4/15. The technician informed the consumer that the range can be repaired for $310. The consumer was not interested in a repair. They offered her a 20% discount towards a new range. The consumer stated that she would like a replacement range but the technician informed her that since she does not have an extended warranty on the unit, Sears would not provide her with a replacement. The technician informed her that she can clean the microwave and continue using it.
The consumer stated that she slightly burned her right arm while trying to help her husband move the range away from the wall. The consumer stated that Sears was not interested in her injuries.

The product, in the report: Double oven range
I purchased the oven in question back in 2010 and about 3 years ago the racks in the bottom oven will just fall, they do not fit properly anymore. I thought maybe I was using the wrong rack for each level, but it doesn’t matter. I also recently had issue with the electronic control board and the temp probe. They sure don’t make them like they used to and charge way to much for products that expire within 5 years, when they used to last over 15-20 years.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model # 790.9611340F
On or about April 22, 2010, I purchased a Kenmore Electric Range Model # 790.9611340F from Sears located at 11033 Carolina Place Pkwy Pineville, North Carolina 28134 with the assistance of [REDACTED], one of the Appliance Select Plus consultants.
I also purchased a refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher at that time for delivery to a home she purchased on May 17, 2010.
When I purchased the electric range it was already fully assembled and was delivered to my home and installed by Sears’ appliance installation services. At that time, I also purchased a 3-year protection/maintenance agreement.
On August 12, 2014 at approximately 5:30pm, while preparing a meal for my family, my leg was sliced open by the sharp metal of the oven door when I walked around the door of the open stove. I had not fallen, or tripped, and was walking a slow pace in her kitchen when I brushed the edge of the door with my leg and the incident occurred.
The laceration required two separate medical visits to two separate medical providers to close it and numerous stitches internally and externally.

The product, in the report: Kenmore model # 790.96122409, serial # VF71656275. It is white in color with a ceramic flat cooktop.
We own a Kenmore Range model # 790.96122409, serial # VF71656275. The range was in our home when we purchased it in 2007. The first thing that happened was the left front burner would not turn off when I turned the knob to off position, nor would the temp turn down when purchased tried to turn it to low heat. It would finally turn off after the stove was off for a few minutes. This happened 3 or 4 times and then I decided not to use that burner at all anymore. ( That happened only a few months after we moved into the newly built home.) But the most recent event happened in February 2015, the whole stove sparked and arched from back of stove AND a small flame shot up from behind the stove. Of course I screamed! My husband and son-in-law came in and took care of the problem. It didn’t even throw the circuit breaker in our fuse box!! We did some clean up then, but a few days later I pulled out the stove to do cleaning and I found where some metal in the stove had melted onto my floor and now I have a 2 inch silver metal puddle stuck on my floor.

The product, in the report: Electric Smooth-top Range
05/19/2015 - The consumer’s wife turned the oven on to bake potatoes. When oven was turned on, oven buzzed, then flames shot out. The consumer’s wife noticed smoke coming from the unit. When the consumer was closer to the unit, she noticed that flames were being shot up from behind the unit. The consumer’s wife had yet placed the potatoes inside the oven to bake.
The consumer’s wife was able to contain the fire by moving the range from the oven door in order to disconnect it. When the consumer’s wife moved the range, the maple hardwood floor underneath it was scratched; aside from this, the consumer has no other damages to report.
The consumer indicates that after the incident happened, him and wife have tried a couple of times to plug the unit back on to see if it would work or if it would display error codes but it does neither.
05/19/2015 - The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation. The consumer was then referred to the manufacturer. When he explained the situation, he was informed his unit was included in a recall and that he would receive a call back so that they can arrange for an inspection of the unit.
05/21/2015 - Having not heard from Kenmore, the consumer contacted them again. This time, he was informed that his unit was not under warranty nor included in any recall and thus no assistance would be provided to him. He was referred to the US CPSC so that the agency “can resolve his issue.”
The consumer indicates that prior to the incident and for approximately the past three years, the unit would give error codes that would eventually go away when the consumer’s wife would turn off and turn the unit back on. The consumer is unaware how frequently these error codes appeared. The consumer never contacted the retailer nor the manufacturer of the unit regarding the error codes as the unit functioned correctly after it was restarted. The consumer is unaware what type of error codes the unit was displaying.
The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: KENMORE ELECTRIC SMOOTH RANGE MODEL#7909611340A; SN; VF65120657
I purchase a Kenmore smooth top electric range from Sears late 2006 early 2007. I noticed for about a month when I turn the stove off by the knobs the burners stay lit. I actually noticed when I was cooking I turned the knobs to off but the food burnes when I walked away because two of the burners will not shut-off. Then Friday I wnet to use the oven turned it on set it for 350 placed my dish in for a potluck went and took a shower and the smoke detector started going off. I looked at the oven and the kitchen was full of smoke. I unplugged the stove for the day. Tried to use the oven on Saturday and I noticed only the top probe/coil was getting red the bottom didnt come on at all but once again the stove was smoking and the circuit breaker tripped. I unplugged again and when my husband came home he re-set the circuit breaker plugged the oven up again and after 10 minutes it started beeping with a f10 code. We read the journal and it states the EOC need to be replaced “Runaway Temperature” or the RTD sensor. I am concerned because usually I set a delay timer for my food and leave or continue my outside gardening while im preparing dinner. Now I cant use the oven at all and everytime I use the stove top I have to unplug when finish because the burners will not go off unless unplugged.

The product, in the report: Electric Range with two ovens, 5 cooking surfaces The model number is 790-98022800. The serial number is NF90630084.
On Easter I was preparing dinner which included baking 8 Cornish Game Hens in my Kenmore Elite Electric Range. When I was pulling the pan out of the over, the oven shelf collapsed, spilling the liquid in the pan on my hand, the door of the oven and the floor. I checked to be sure that I had inserted the shelves correctly, which I had. Since that time, if there is any weight on either of the two shelves, they have collapsed, including today baking brownies. This range was purchased 4-6-09 and this had not happened previously. The self-cleaning program has been used on several occasions since purchase, including February, 2015. Numerous comments were found on the internet addressing this issue.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Range; 5 burners; black and stainless
On 04/14/15 the consumer used the right rear burner for about 5 minutes and when she turned the knob to the “off” position the burner failed to shut off. The consumer had to shut off the circuit breaker to turn the unit off. The consumer then turned the circuit breaker back “on” and the consumer states the right rear burner remained off. The consumer then turned the right rear burner “on” and when she pushed the control button to the “off” position the burner failed to shut off. The consumer states she checked the front and rear left burners and those burners also failed to shut off. The consumer also checked the front right burner and the burner shut off when she pushed the button to the “off” position.
On 04/15/15 the consumer contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The firm’s rep (name unknown) told the consumer that the unit was not part of a recall and the consumer would have to pay for any repairs. The consumer states the firm’s rep did not take interest in the safety hazard or take a report on the matter. The consumer was referred to CPSC (800-638-2772).
The consumer is upset that the firm has recalled similar units for the same issues and her unit poses a fire hazard as well but is not included in the recall.
The unit was repaired once before for a different problem (electrical defect) but the consumer does not remember the details of the repair.

The product, in the report: Smooth top, double oven free standing range
First, the ovens are not accurate in there temps by as much as 75 degrees too cool. Second, one cool day, the controls for the cook top started flashing a code and sounding an alarm. This was when the unit was out of warranty. Over the next two days the unit continued. When the weather warmed up, the unit stopped alarming and went back to operating. Third, and most dangerous is the inside of the lower oven has warped and the grates no longer stay in position. They are too small for the opening. I had a turkey fall down first and now the upper shelves are totally useless as the will not stay up at all.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” Electric Range in Black and Stainless Steel with smooth top burners.
I am the owner of a Kenmore Electric Range Model# 79092803011. Recently, my wife was using the oven to cook dinner. We began to smell smoke and noticed that the food in the oven was burning. We made several attempts to shut off the oven but, it wouldn’t shut off and continued to get hotter. The oven temperature exceeded 500 degrees and only shutdown when the circut breaker was cut off. Thankfully, the house did not catch fire.
I was so distressed by this experince that I searched on-line to see if there were any recalls on this product. I was shocked to see how many similar complaints have been posted. Complaintsboard.com has more than I can count, all with very similar circumstances.
My wife received minor burns trying to remove the burnt food from the oven. Fortunately, we were close by and acted promptly, otherwise I’m sure the situation would have been much worse.

The product, in the report: electric range with oven
January -2015: The consumer baked a pan of cookies in the oven for approximately 20 minutes, on 350 degrees. The consumer turned the oven off, but it remained on and the temperature continued increase. The consumer had to trip the breaker in order to turn the oven off.
The consumer read the owner’s manual and it recommended to unplug the oven/range from the outlet and indicated that this worked as a reset feature for the unit. The consumer tripped the breaker multiple times in an attempt to reset the unit. However, the unit has not reset itself with this last incident.
The consumer has experienced this problem 2 times prior to this current incident. One incident occurred earlier this year and the other incident occurred approximately a year earlier.
The consumer’s product appears to present a problem similar to the ones in Recall CAP# 09-333.
January-2015, the consumer called the manufacturer and asked for a replacement oven control circuit. The consumer had done some research on-line and he thought that by replacing that part, the problem would be solved. However, the manufacturer was going to charge the consumer $220 for the part, so the consumer declined to pay that amount.
The consumer had an aluminum pan in the bottom of the oven, to catch any food or drippings that may have fallen to the bottom. The pan was charred in spots and several holes were also burned through the bottom of the pan. This happened with the incident in January 2015.
(3/7/2015) The consumer cooked a turkey in the oven and turned the oven off and removed the turkey, so that they could carve it. He placed the pan with the turkey bones and drippings back into the oven, while it was still in the off position. However, approximately 10 – 15 minutes later, he noticed smoke coming from the oven. The consumer opened the oven door and found that the heating element had remained on and appeared to have increased in temperature. The drippings in the pan that the turkey was in were caramelized and burned and the pan was scorched. The consumer had to trip the breaker in order to stop the oven. Once the oven cooled down, he turned the breaker back on and found that the oven automatically turned on as well. The consumer tried this several times, but each time, the oven turned on as soon as he turned the breaker on.
A code of F1 showed up on the control panel where the time is normally displayed.
The breaker is currently tripped for the oven and the consumer is afraid that if he turns the breaker on and leaves his home, that the oven might turn on and possibly catch fire.

Was using my 4 year old Kenmore oven model 790.92803010 and the outer glass on the door shattered throwing glass at my son and me. Very scary!! Doesn’t seem right that the company won’t stand behind the product and replace it for free or recall the product.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Range - stainless steel with black trim Model No. 790.9641340E Serial No. VF84335671 Purchased on 11/08/08
I own a Kenmore range, Model No. 790-9641340E, Serial No. VF84335671, which I purchased on 11/08/08.
Late on Monday, March 2, 2015, about 5 minutes after removing a pan of roasted vegetables from the oven, I was washing dishes in my kitchen. Suddenly I heard a crackling sound, then a loud crash. I turned around [in my galley-style kitchen] to find the outer oven glass door had shattered. I kept hearing a crackling sound for the next 15-25 minutes, and wasn’t sure if it was due to the cooling down of the oven interior [I’d turned it off after removing the roasted vegetables], or the force of gravity on the pieces of glass still stuck to the oven door frame.
Thankfully, I did not suffer any cuts by the exploding glass even though I was approx. 18” away from the oven when the crash occurred. And, thankfully I was able to keep my cat away from the kitchen; she would have most definitely suffered cuts to her paws otherwise due to all the glass on the kitchen floor.
In my 35+ years of living alone, cooking and using ovens, NEVER have I had an oven’s glass explode. In the past few days, I have searched this problem online and see where many other consumers have encountered the same problem.
Why are manufacturers allowed to install sub-standard glass into ovens? Why does the federal government not require ovens to be manufactured with the same standard of glass that was used 20-30 years ago?
Since 3/2/15, I’ve read that using the self-cleaning oven feature can cause exploding glass; I have self-cleaned my oven only once, and most definitely no more than twice, since purchasing it. I do not slam the oven door when closing it. I do not hit or bang things against it. I live alone, so no one else has used my oven. In other words, I have not been negligent in its use. If the Feds would require oven manufacturers to use quality glass, THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED TO ME, nor to many other consumers.
Now, I have to incur a costly repair, have been unduly scared as a result of the incident & fearful of using my oven, as well as extremely inconvenienced.

Prior to leaving home for 4 hours my wife placed our chicken dinner in the oven and set it to bake at 250 degrees. I confirmed the temperature setting before leaving. The meal was cooking in a Le Creuset cast iron pot, which has been used in the same manner for several years. Upon arriving home our daughter noticed heavy smoke in the house, an error code of F3 and flames from the oven, so she shut off the range circuit breaker and called 911. When the firefighters arrived they removed the flaming pot of chicken and vegetables (which were burned to a charcoal-like consistency), and the range, which had heavy brown smoke/burn marks on the front panel and rear vents. Our back splash had similar marks, and the bottom edge of the cabinets were scorched on both sides of the range. We were merely moments away from a fully involved kitchen fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top electric oven and range. Stainless steel front panel. 5 total burners.
The problem is with a Kenmore flattop electric range. We were cooking dinner and when we turned on the oven the panel behind the display started to spark a lot. We had to turn off the power to the oven to get the sparking to stop. I then opened the top part of the stove to see what happened and saw that one of the wiring harnesses had shorted out and nearly caught on fire. It was very luck that we were close when this happened or it would have started a fire. I called Sears to report the complaint and they were very unapologetic. They essentially told me that they do not care that the product is unsafe because it is out of warranty (the stove is only a little over 2 years old). This all happened around the second week in September 2014, and it took Sears over one month to come and repair the oven, which they charged me more than $300 to fix. I complained to several different Sears representatives that the cost should be covered because this was a safety issue not a warranty issue, but they said they did not agree.

The product, in the report: Electric range--ceramic glass cooktop; convection/conventional oven
I own a Kenmore model 790.9743802 electric range that I purchased new in 2009. While using the convection oven, I heard a buzzing/crackling noise and saw smoke coming from behind the control panel. I immediately shut off the oven and allowed the stove to cool. I then disconnected the power from the stove and removed the cover from the back of control panel. Upon inspection, I saw that one of the connectors and wires on the circuit board for the control panel was burned and melted.
There does not appear to be any safety recalls for this particular model appliance, but there are numerous posts on the internet that reference similar problems with Kenmore/Electrolux electric ranges. I am concerned that this appliance has a design flaw or material defect that poses a serious fire hazard if the problem goes undetected and is not properly repaired.

My wife and I were baking dinner this past Sunday when we noticed that our food was burned. We thought maybe the temp was slightly off in our Kenmore oven so I read the manual on how to calibrated and adjusted it down by 35 degrees.
This past Tuesday my 16 year old daughter was baking cookies and within 10 minutes there was smoke coming out of the oven and they were burnt. She pulled them out of the oven and it was extremely hot. The oven started beeping and giving an error code F10 but would not turn off or stop beeping. My wife rushed home from work and the only way to turn off the oven was for her to trip the circuit breaker.
I have read numerous complaints online that this is a serious problem with the 790 series ovens from Kenmore. It is my opinion that this is a serious safety issue and that these ovens should be recalled before something serious happens or worse yet someone gets hurt.

We were cooking a pizza in November 2014. Opened the oven up and the pizza was burnt to a crisp. The bottom of the oven was cherry red. We had to pull the circuit breaker to get the oven to shut off. Every time we tried using the oven after that the oven never shut off. Sometimes it gave an F10 error and shut down on its own. I tried replacing the thermostat but that didn’t change anything. The next suggestion was to replace the controller. After receiving the new part I went to change it and found two plugs badly burnt, the metal tips from the male plug stuck to the female end. I called Sears, but they said that they were not aware of any issues with this model stove.

Baking a cake at 325 degrees. Placed cake in oven when it came to temperature, not 2 minutes later the oven dinged again. There was an error message (E3 and F?) and suddenly a pop and fire from the broiler which shouldn’t have been on. I pulled the plug, the smoke alarm was off, there was acrid smoke. I opened all the windows and put on all the fans to try to clear the smoke which was burning my eyes.
After the flames went out I removed the cake and it looked like it was petrified, along with the pan.

While not at home, our Kenmore oven came on at full heat as if in cleaning mode. When I returned home 2 hours later the kitchen smelled of smoke and the oven was beeping with a code of F2 on the display. The oven had made the entire kitchen intensely hot. I pushed the “clear” button and the beeping stopped. Then about 20 seconds later the beeping and F2 resumed. The oven fan was also continuously running during this time. The only way I could get the oven off was to flip the circuit breaker. This is obviously a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: electric smoothtop range with oven
2010: The consumer baked several cakes in the oven and later that day, it quit working. The error code of F-15 came up. The consumer went on-line and found that the unit needed to be reset. He unplugged it and waited for approximately 15 minutes and plugged it back in. This allowed the range to reset itself.
On 2 separate occasions, the large, front right burner (if facing the stove) came on by itself. The consumer could not turn the burner off by the use of the control knob. The consumer had to trip the breaker in order to turn the burner off. The 2 incidents happened within a week to 10 days of each other. This happened in late September/early August of 2012. About a week after the 2 burner incidents, the clock-board on the range burned out. This incident burned the back of the range, the wall behind the range and caused discoloration to the range itself.
The range was under warranty and the consumer had a dealer’s technician come out and look at it. The technician checked the clock-board and determined that based on the charring in that area, that the part needed to be replaced. The tech. called the manufacturer and ordered a new clock-board. Approximately, 1 week later, the consumer received the replacement part and a dealer’s tech. came back out and installed it.
Approximately 3 weeks later, the burners quit working all together. The consumer called the dealer’s technician again. The tech. came out and looked at the range and told the consumer that all of the control boards had to be replaced and it would cost $800. The consumer declined to repair it and placed the range in his shop.
The consumer called Sear’s about this issue, but they were not willing to do anything for the consumer.
The consumer said that the range was not included in Recall 09-333.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Self Cleaning Electric range made by Whirlpool
On Saturday, January 17, 2015, I was baking cookies in the oven of my Kenmore Range, Model 665.95802, SN # RK 4431605 when the following incident occurred. I selected bake and selected my temperature at 375 degrees. The oven went into a Pre-heat mode and when the signal came on indicating the temperature had been reached and the window display showed “on” I put the first batch of cookies which were on a Farberware Cookies Sheet into the oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the timer signal indicated the time was up and I removed the first batch of cookies from the oven and immediately put in the second batch of cookies which I had waiting on the counter right next to the oven. While they were baking I put the rest of the cookies batch on the first cooled cookies sheet and turned around to look at the window display to see how many minutes the second batch had left to bake. It was approximately 8:30 P.M. I noticed smoke coming out of the top portion of the range and then the house smoke alarms went off. I opened up the oven door and saw flames. I quickly shut the door, pushed the oven “OFF” button, grabbed a box of baking soda from the cupboard next to the range and threw baking soda into the oven. The flames near the front of the oven died out but the ones in the back continued so I took an oven mitt and pulled the oven rack out a little ways and then threw more baking soda into the oven. All the flames died out but then I noticed the broiler element was on and was beat red and it was not getting any cooler. It should not have been on at all because “bake” was selected and that broiler element only comes on during the pre-heat mode and goes off once the temperature is reached. That element was NOT on when I put the second batch of cookies in or I would have noticed it right away. After I got the fire completely out I think it was then that I noticed in the window display the message “F – 2”. Later when I looked that up in the range book it said you should call for service, a little late I would say. Anyway, about that time my husband came in and of course could smell the smoke and I showed him the oven and he could also see that the broiler element was still on and was very red. So he took some pictures of the inside of the oven and then he went downstairs to the electrical box and turned the breaker for the range off. The broiler element immediately went off and then he pulled the range away from the wall and unplugged the range from the wall outlet. I could not call Sears as by the time everything was taken care of they would have been closed. I went online to see if this range had ever had a recall and I tried to file a complaint with the government bureau but I typed what happened 3 times and when I got to the part to submit the complaint I got the same message each time that the site wasn’t available.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore elite electric range
this is a Sears Kenmore elite electric stove; we turned on stove to preheat, circuit board in back started sparking, smoke began pouring out, then fire burst out along back panel for several minutes. Eventually burned itself out, panel is toast. Self-cleaning mode seems to have kicked in because oven door locked as well.

The product, in the report: stainless steel electric range
On 01/14/15 the consumer was using the oven to cook pizza for about 10 minutes. When she opened the door she noticed that the pizza and rack fell down. The consumer states this occurred also on 11/27/14 when she was cooking a turkey. When she opened the door and tried to move the turkey the rack fell.
The consumer states the first time this occurred was about 2-3 years ago. The rack fell while she was cooking and she contacted Sears. The consumer received replacement racks from Sears but they racks continued to fall when she would put something on top of the rack. The consumer informed Sears the problem was still happening and Sears replaced the liner of the oven. The consumer describes it as the metal insert that is in the oven. The repairs were covered under the extended warranty.
On 12/15/14 (estimated) the consumer contacted Sears and informed them of the problem but the consumer states she was getting the run around. The consumer requested to have a supervisor call her back but the consumer did not receive a call back.
On 01/16/15 the consumer contacted Sears and expressed her concerns. The consumer spoke with [REDACTED] who advised her unit is not recalled. [REDACTED] asked the consumer if she would like to arrange a repair at the consumer expense but the consumer declined. The consumer does not feel safe repairing the unit and is not willing to pay for any repairs. [REDACTED] provided the consumer the CPSC recall hotline phone number and advised the consumer to file a report.
The consumer states when she slightly presses down on the rack it falls.
Please note that dates are approximate & that Sears repair service should have mote details about previous repairs while under warranty.
The consumer tried to take pictures of how racks sit on side supports, but it was not clear enough to add additional detail to this report. Essentially - rack does not sit properly on side supports & seems worse in the back. Changing out the racks does not help. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Electric Range Oven
Caller stated that she experienced similar problems of release#09-333. Hazard: Depending on the model, the heating elements can: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
She stated that while using the range it displays F1 and when the oven is powered off the heating element stays on and it has to be unplugged to prevent a fire. this incident has been ongoing for about 2 weeks.
1/12/15 The retailer was contacted and she was given a number for Kenmore which was invalid.
Caller feels that her model should be included in the recall.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range 790.97423901
While cooking dinner two nights ago in our Kenmore Electric Range model #790.97423901 the front glass pane EXPLODED in to a million pieces covering our kitchen, kitchen counters, sink, etc. Glass pieces flew as far as 10 feet from the oven. Not to mention on myself and my dog, which were both standing a couple of feet away. I also had a small glass piece fly in to my right eye. Luckily, there was no real injury involved. The oven was on 400 for about 30 minutes.
I find it unbelievable that there are hundreds of complaints regarding this over two years yet Sears will do NOTHING to back their product or make any changes to prevent this incredibly dangerous incident from occurring. Not even a recall!
They will provide this comment though, which I am sure will be posted to my complaint very soon. “Business Comments: Sears Holdings takes product safety issues very seriously. We investigate each CPSC database incident report. We encourage our customers to provide additional information about incidents to our Customer Care Network, by calling 800-549-4505.”
I will save Sears Holding the time and let them know, I did call their “Customer Care Network” and although the lady was very nice, she could only provide assistance in scheduling a tech to come and look at our range or a 10% discount on a future appliance.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” electric
Using the Kenmore Range, model # 790-94012601, hi-power front left element to boil pasta for dinner with the surface dial set on #8 I noticed the white enamel surface turning brown (burning) and the coil bright red. Turned the dial to #7 and boiling of water stopped--had to return to #8. Detected the odor of an electrical fire which permeated the whole house for days. Upon further investigation, found that the coil had been damaged (burn hot spots), and the terminal block was melded to the unit making it impossible to remove the coil, and ash covered the bottom of the cooking utensil and the drip pan. The element is one of two hi-powered elements (2600W each) on this range. Even on low setting, the heat has cracked the enamel coating on the drip pans. This particular element and terminal block was replaced approximately 3 years ago for the same reason and was reported to Sears at that time. Still no corrections----

01/05/2015 The consumer turned her right, rear burner off after she had a pot cooking for approximately one hour. A minute or two after it was off, the consumer noticed that the pot was still boiling. She checked the range and noticed that the same burner was coming on and off every couple of seconds.
The consumer indicates that the panel showed that the burner was off despite it not being so. The consumer proceeded to turn off the main circuit breaker in the home as it was the only way to turn off the range. The consumer later unplugged the unit and has kept it that way. The consumer indicates that no physical damage occurred to her range.
The consumer contacted the retailer to order the part that makes the burner turn on and off but the representative she spoke to did not know what part this was. Initially, the representative believed it was another part that needed to be ordered. The representative told the consumer that they would contact her when they reached a Service Technician and had more information on the part.
01/06/2015 The consumer contacted the retailer as they had not called her back. They told her the same thing: they would contact her when she had more information. The consumer states that with the product information provided, the retailer has yet to be able to identify the range.
The consumer indicates that several years back, the same thing occurred but with the left and rear burner. The consumer had to pay for the Service Call this time as the retailer acknowledged that the parts needed were in fact defective and thus provided them free of charge to the consumer.
The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety and fire hazard. The consumer plans on contacting the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: double oven electric range
Kenmore Electric Range, model 790.98053004 purchased from Sears about two years ago. The rack in the bottom oven is not sturdy enough. When roasting something heavy such as a turkey or ham, the rack slips out of the track on one side causing the pan and contents to fall to the bottom of the oven at an angle. This is because the rack sags in the middle due to the weight, pulling the rack out of the track. The weight is not excessive. The rack should be able to handle a 10 pound turkey! The rack slips especially when sliding it out to check the cooking progress or to baste etc. Very dangerous since the hot contents of the pan spill and splash all over the oven possibly starting a fire and burning the person. This has occurred on Dec. 24, 2014 and several times previously.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Free Standing Range/Oven
Kenmore Electric Range started on fire. In previous weeks, the unit would have a slight plastic/electric burning smell during pre-heat. During a pre-heat cycle last night, the unit displayed smoke coming out of the rear of the control panel area. I immediately pulled the oven out and disconnected power to the unit (I was unable to get to the circuit breaker in time).
Upon inspection (after letting the oven cool down) it was found that the wiring harness that exits the control board had melted and caught on fire. This harness area was the yellow wire which extends to the lower heating element. Upon me removing the harness from the circuit board, the male end disconnected from the board, as the solder had been removed due to heat. The circuit board trace had also lifted.
I have found several instances of this same issue on the web - one of which is another complaint on this site for the exact same issue (with pictures).
http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1385947
This is unacceptable. Sears has been notified and I was told since the unit was ~4 years old and that I didn’t buy the ‘extended warranty’ that there was not much else they can do. I find it completely unacceptable that this issue occurs, and has been reported several times on the web with ovens which use this board/harness. I went out and purchased another brand of oven, as even though I could fix this one for $160, I do not trust the design. The extra money is worth it to protect my family and possessions.

We have a Sears Kenmore Elite model 790 electric range. The shelves fall when any weight is put on them. I understand from online research this is a well known problem for Sears. I contacted them and they just pointed me to the parts department. It is a very hazardous situation because when hot things are in the oven and they fall it can burn someone. It is disappointing a company like Sears knows of this issue and yet refuses to acknowledge the problem or do anything to resolve it.

The product, in the report: Electric range; white color
The consumer is filing a report on her unit which she feels poses a fire hazard and should be recalled.
On 12/15/14 the consumer was using the oven to bake cookies. The consumer had set the oven on a bake setting and at a 350 degree temperature. After an hour she states the broiler element spontaneously turned and her cookies were burning even though it still had 6 minutes left. The consumer states that temperature was still at 350 degrees but shortly after she noticed an error code on the control panel that read “PF” which she believes means power failure. The consumer pressed the “off” button but the oven failed to turn off. The consumer cut the circuit breaker to shut off the unit. The consumer has kept the circuit breaker off.
The consumer contacted a local appliance company so the unit can be repaired. The consumer informed the company of the incident and the company advised the consumer that this problem is a common issue with similar units. The company did not recommend that she repair the unit because it was likely that the incident would occur again. The company suggested that the consumer contact CPSC to report the problem.
The consumer states the unit was repaired but does not recall the date. The “sure simmered” setting was not working and the consumer states it was repaired through Sears under warranty.

12/5 -12/9 The manufacturer was contacted and he was transferred to a lot of departments but no one was willing to assist him with this issue. He was also informed that his range was not part of a recall although it displays similar problems of Recall#09-333.Hazard: Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. Baking chicken at 350deg. After about15 min noticed different odor than usual. After another 5 minutes noticed oven displaying E2 F3 (I think) error meaning oven too hot. Turned oven off, but it remained on, broiler element only. Had to turn oven off at circuit breaker. If I had not been present and had not opened circuit breaker at box, I believe there would likely have been a fire. Chicken was burnt.
Cannot use cooktop. If breaker is turned back on, broiler element turns on even though oven is turned off. One would think that controller failure would shut everything down, rather than allowing element to be powered on and heating when nothing is turned on.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model No. 790.9621340C, stainless steel and black smooth top
Faint burning plastic smell had recently began to occur when the oven was turned on and persisted for a few days. Today, as both oven and range were in use, loud static pops and sparks flew out of the bottom of the oven and from the back, spewing black smoke and ash out of the vents. The electricity was still flowing into the unit, as both the oven and burner were clearly on. Smoke continued to pour out of the back of the unit until the main breaker was turned off. Fire department arrived approximately four minutes after the incident occurred (called 911 immediately and fire station is located within .5 mile of our residence) and reported that the area around the range was 180 degrees F. The sparks caused damage to the laminate flooring (melted through) and the area behind the range was charred.

I had just finished pre-heating our oven at 350 degrees when I opened the oven door, placed the food inside, and was closing the oven door when the glass front exploded showering my legs and the kitchen floor with broken glass. The glass exploded before the oven door was closed and while I was still holding the handle.
The internet is littered with people having the same issue ([REDACTED]kenmore oven door exploding). I have no faith that reporting this to Sears will do any good. I would think a recall on this product would have already occured. Disappointing.

The product, in the report: Electric oven with 2 grates for shelve (no range with the product)
10/2007 The consumer purchased the oven.
11/2012 (Thanksgiving) The oven was in use for approximately 6 hours and set to 325 degrees. The consumer’s wife opened the oven door and attempted to pull out the metal oven rack, but the rack started to fall toward the bottom of the oven. The oven walls had expanded and left less support for the oven rack, which allowed one side of the rack to fall down. The rack was placed on the lowest possible height setting, just above the burner.
The consumer said that heavy items cannot be placed on the lower rack setting, because the same thing will happen. The consumer has place wood stove bricks in his oven to support the oven racks.
1/2013 The consumer called Sear’s Consumer Affairs and he was provided with various numbers at different times. The consumer was assigned case #[REDACTED] . They sent out a technician to examine the stove and create an estimate of what the repair would cost.
1/15/2013 The first technician came out and estimated the repair to cost $883.00. The first technician stopped by for the estimate, but did not identify what the cause of the problem was. Sear’s agreed to send the first technician out free of charge and they covered the $90 service fee.
The consumer followed up with the Sear’s, because he wanted them to identify the problem and the possible cause.
2/4/2013 A 2nd technician came out to examine the oven. This technician identified that the oven walls expanded during use and indicated that this was a manufacturer’s defect and that there were a total of 4 other companies that he was aware of with a similar problem. The consumer said that the other companies that the technician mentioned were [REDACTED], [REDACTED], Electrolux & [REDACTED]. The technician took measurements of the oven and said that it was not the consumer’s fault.
The consumer contacted Electrolux and initially their rep’s told the consumer that they did not make his oven. After several conversations with various rep’s, Electrolux mentioned that they may have been manufacturing oven during the time his was made, but did not confirm that they made his specific oven. The rep. told the consumer that the oven was out of warranty and there was nothing they could do for him.
The consumer said that the various rep’s that he spoke with repeatedly told him that the oven was out of warranty and indicated that he should have continued to purchase the extended warranty.
None of the companies have been willing to provide the consumer any further assistance.
The consumer believes that this presents a substantial safety hazard and may be more wide spread.
The consumer’s oven did not appear to be included in any CPSC recalls.

Kenmore Elite Smooth top range Model #790.94453700 Serial # VF74441886. We had cooked some biscuits on the convection setting @ 350 degrees for 14 minutes. We were sitting in the living room after dinner and heard a strange noise coming from the kitchen. We ran into the kitchen to see flames and smoke pouring out from behind the stove. I ran to the oven and tried to pull it out and realized I should shut of the breaker first. After flipping off the breaker, we pulled out the oven to see it was still on fire. We were able to put out the fire with water. After letting the range cool down, I pulled it out the rest of the way and saw the fire had started at the pigtail mounting block. It had completely melted down and caught the rest of the wiring in the back of the unit on fire and had burnt a hole in the wall behind the range. The wall is also covered with dark black soot from the fire.

The product, in the report: True White Kenmore Electric Range
I was using the stove part of the oven to cook. While waiting for my soup to cook on the stove, I went into the other room. I could hear a beep coming ever so often from the kitchen. I hadn’t set the timer, nor was I preheating the oven so I ignored the beep (thinking it was on tv) for the first couple times. After about 10-15 minutes I went into the kitchen to see if I could find the beep. There was a message on the clock part of the stove. It said F-4 or F-3 (I can’t remember for sure, but it was something I hadn’t seen) I could smell something “hot smelling” so I looked into the oven which is when I noticed the Broiler (top part) of the oven was on. I had not turned any part of the oven on so I was surprised it was and already getting very hot. I tried hitting the “cancel, off” button several times on my oven. I turned the stove off as well and tried hitting the cancel off button again. Nothing would work to turn the oven off, it just kept getting hotter to the point that it was making the counter and wall surrounding the oven very hot to the touch. After many failed attempts to turn the oven off we turned the power off to the oven. We tried about 20 minutes later to return power to the oven and immediately it started getting hot again on its own. I believe this is a serious safety issue. Our oven is only 10 years old. We have a receipt of the date purchased. Had this happened when we were sleeping or not home I fear it would have burnt our house down. The amount of heat being thrown off from the oven for the less than half hour it was on was immense and I believe would have only gotten hotter. We currently have the power off to the oven so to prevent it from happening again and there is no way I will be endangering my family by returning power to it.

We turned the breaker off because the broiler would not turn off even though the oven was completely turned off...Tried turning the breaker on a few times to see if the unit would re-set & again, without turning anything on, the broiler got blazing hot. This exact model is not on the Sears recall list but the same year and same starting model #’s are on the recall list...Extremely bad fire hazard. The product, in the report: Kenmore electric induction range. Model# 790.92183011. Brushed stainless steel with a ceramic glass smooth top surface.
My wife was cooking dinner tonight on our 1 1/2 year old Kenmore range (model# 790.92183011) when the outer glass exploded, throwing glass everywhere. The oven temperature was set at 350 & thankfully my daughter had just moved out of the way. This is very disturbing to me being I have read numerous reports tonight describing similar incidents with this model range. I feel this is a serious safety concern and that it needs immediate attention. Unfortunately, when I called Sears they said it could have been a bad batch/group of glass but they wouldn’t cover it under warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” electric range
I was baking a roast at 350 degrees. Around hour 2, the oven beeped, but I did not have a timer on. When I went to see, the broiler had come on, though it was only set to bake. It was extremely hot and the heating elements glowing red. I tried multiple times to turn off the oven and it would not turn off. The only way to resolve it was to flip the circuit breaker. I waited 24 hours and turned the circuit breaker back. The broiler came back on as well.

The product, in the report: Model 790 double electric oven
I have a 10 year old Kenmore oven. Model number 790. The bottom ovens glass front exploded at 8:30 am. There was no one in the kitchen at the time. Small pieces of glass were all over the kitchen as far as 15 feet away. The oven door exploded at a time that the oven was not on nor without anything hitting it. The lower oven had not been used in months and has never used the self cleaning option. Only two of us live at the home and there are no small kids running around that could have bumped into the glass over time. This is a safety concern because of the of thousands of little pieces of glass that traveled at high speed up to 15 feet from the oven. Someone could have been seriously injured if they were in the room at the time.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller is reporting her electric four burner range top becomes red hot whenever any of the burners are in use, this became evident from the beginning of purchase from retailer in NJ around October 2010.
The caller leaned over the range and burned her stomach which she treated herself.
All elements are shut off , they will not turn on until the element consumer wishes to use is jiggled to obtain connection, but then sometimes will fluctuate from the temperature consumer sets when in use. When element is jiggled, bluish-green sparks occur.
When elements are pulled off to clean underneath the caller has noticed that where the element and the connections meet the prongs at the base (red & white) have crumbled and fallen off and prongs remaining are corroded.
The elements will shut off.
October 2014 the caller burned her finger but ran cold water over it.
Not injuries are being reported, not medical attention has been required.
Caller has attempted to contact the manufacturer by phone but was pushed back and forth so ultimately sent a letter to them.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore electric range with a ceramic cooktop and double ovens. It was the bottom, big oven door that broke. Model number is 790.9805. This oven was purchased 3 years ago almost to the date when this happened.
The big glass door on my Kenmore double oven stove basically exploded. The stove and ovens were not in use at the time. It was a Saturday and the last time the oven had been used was on Tuesday of that week. Glass particles went as far as 10 feet.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 27, 2014, sent to the company Nov 21, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 8, 2014
The product, in the report: 5 burner electric range
The consumer would like to file a report against her product because she feels it poses both a safety and fire hazard.
10/11/2014 The consumer woke up in the morning and noticed the front, right burner on her range was turned on and fully engaged. Said burner is the hottest and largest one of her unit’s five burners. The consumer reports that everything surrounding the range was hot, including the cabinets, granite, etc. The consumer slightly burned her fingers trying to shut it off because of the heat radiating from the unit. The consumer’s husband had to switch off the breaker that provides electricity to the range. The consumer does not know the length of time the range was on. She went to sleep the night before with the range off and woke up to it on.
The consumer reports that the control panel was not working for the remaining four burners. In order to continue using her range until she could repair it or afford a new one, the consumer’s husband had to cut off the wires connecting to the faulty burner. The consumer indicates that this was the only way the burner would maintain itself off and the remaining would turn on when needed.
The consumer called the retailer and they informed her that her unit was not included in a recall and therefore were unable to provide any assistance free of charge. They indicated that work on her unit would have to be paid for out of pocket by the consumer.
The light on the microwave situated above the range is no longer working, although the consumer does not know if this is in correlation to the incident. The consumer reports that she uses her range on a daily basis and never had problems with it. She indicates that there are no apparent physical damages to her unit.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore Elite electric wall oven, standard 27”. Model 790.47882602. Serial number NF81113819
When the door of our Kenmore Elite wall oven was opened, the oven rack fell off the side support, slopping a pot of 350 degree food in the oven. Only luck and fast responses prevented major burns to the person checking on the food.
We are now able to use the oven only with the rack in the lowest position, with light dishes.
The oven is a model 790.47882602, serial number NF81113819.
I have contacted two different Sears customer service phone numbers, each time being told that if I am not the original purchaser of the oven, nothing can be done, and that I would have to pay for a service call to be provided with a repair estimate. When I explained that it is a safety issue they didn’t respond any differently.
There are multiple descriptions of this oven failing the same way, in all ages of the oven, so I believe Sears is probably aware of the problem.
