The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range, model 790.9745
I opened the door of my oven to see if the rack was in the right location for the cake I was about to bake, and the glass door exploded and shattered throughout my kitchen, hitting me. The oven was not turned on at the time, and had not been used for several weeks prior, since we had been out of town on vacation and just returned. Not all the glass fell to the ground, so I tried to cover what remained with heavy plastic to prevent injury to my family or my cat, and in doing so, cut my finger on the shattered glass that remained in the door.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel convection range
We purchased a Kenmore Smoothtop range in Nov 2012. Just 2 days ago, when my husband turned on the convection oven, the range short-circuited. It caused all the lights in the house to strobe like a fun house and a Horrible arching sound generated throughout the whole house. I was upstairs and could hear it. By the time I got downstairs, my husband had the back door open, airing out the kitchen It was filled with acrid, electrical smelling smoke. The circuit breaker tripped to protect us. After the smoke cleared and we felt safe, we removed the back of the range. We saw melted wires and the plastic box that the wires ran through in the bottom of the panel was totally melted. There was also soot on the panel causing us to believe that a flame-out had occurred. Thank goodness the whole range did not catch fire. We took pictures just in case anyone needs to see them. We think this range needs to be investigated. There is no reason for this to have happened. We had not moved the range in over a year. Have any other incidents like this happened with this range? The product, in the report: Free standing electric range, Kenmore KM Elite, Model # 7909802380, Serial # NF84020246. Self cleaning oven, stainless steel with black ceramic top, 30 inch wide
Two to racks collapse when anything is put on them, and I mean anything. I do believe this could be a serious burn issue or even fire issue if there were liquids of any kind in the pans. The oven racks worked fine the first year, the last two times I used the self clean option is when I started having the problem. It seems the oven has expanded since the last few self cleanings were done. I have tried moving the racks around by switching them but to no avail they still collapse.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric range model 790.92903010
I own a Kenmore Range (Model 790.92903010) purchased in 2013 at Sears in Springfield Oregon. Today, I preheated it to 350 on the Convection Roast setting. It beeped, indicating that it had reached temp. A few minutes later I stepped over my dog (who was laying in front of the oven) and opened the oven door. When the door had been pulled open just a few inches, there was a loud BANG and glass flew into my kitchen and onto my dog as the glass outer door exploded. Nobody was hurt, but it doesn’t sound like Sears is willing to pay for this. I am furious, because this keeps happening to this model of oven, and this is not a thing that should need to be covered by warranty. This is a thing that should never happen.

Kenmore Oven #790.92803011 The oven was on at 325 degrees. I opened the oven door to check the food and then gently closed it. The glass on the outside of the oven door exploded sending shards of glass (safety glass) across the kitchen. I was standing in front of the oven, but I was wearing jeans and the glass bounced off me and I was not injured. I “googled” it and found the hundreds of others had this problem with the Kenmore 790 series. If a child had been in the room or if I had been peering into the oven, it could have been very dangerous.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range. White. Model 95012102. Serial RM5128771
I was using the oven for baking. I turned the oven off when I was done. I left the kitchen. Some time later, my husband asked me if I had something in the oven because he could smell something burning. I went into the kitchen and saw that the digital clock and display screen was showing the oven was off. However, the heating element was bright orange and the oven was extremely hot. The heat could be felt to the touch on the outside of the oven and whole stovetop area. We were unable to turn the oven off. The only way it would shut off is after we unplugged it.
This happened late in the evening. We are so thankful that we didn’t go to bed before we noticed this. We have two small children.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Range Model #79094173310 Black/Stainless I believe it’s 36 inch
My stove cook top cracked in February, 2016 due to overheating oven. Cook top replaced and nothing further by Sears. October 3, 2016 while I was baking some biscuits my electric panel on my cook top started shooting out electric sparks and was on fire. Lots of smoke, flames and sparks but thankfully we are okay and thanks to my dad installing a fire panel behind the stove my home didn’t catch fire. Stove purchased April, 2015 so no warranty. Just paid off last month over $600 now we are faced with buying another stove. This is a major safety issue and we don’t want anyone losing their home or life due to this issue. Neither Sears nor Kenmore are willing to do anything about it.

The outer glass blew out on our Kenmore Electric Range, model 790 9270 9280 9290 last night. Never having heard of this before, i did an internet search and have learned that despite over 350 similar Kenmore outer glass explosions, Sears says it is likely customer fault for mistreating oven door. Reports also say all You folks do is collect statistics.
Really? i am a retiree, 65 years of age. Have cooked nearly all my life and have owned and operated well over a dozen different ovens over the years. Never had a problem with oven glass before. For Sears to suggest this happened because owners cause this to happen is ludicrous.
It has to be a flaw in the glass making process. It is the outer glass that shattered. Outer glass does not touch the oven racks.
You folks need to check into date these glass pieces were made. i have a feeling something went wrong with the process on a day/week that caused the flaws, and despite tens of thousands of other units not having this problem, many do have this flaw. i predict many other consumers will be contacting You in the coming years, reporting the same issue.
How many people have to have this happen before You decide this is an issue and Sears should be held accountable? Probably won’t help me, as i intend to junk our exploded range and purchase a different brand.

We have no idea why this happened. I am glad my husband wears glasses or he may no longer have sight. Glass flew all over.

The product, in the report: Electric range
I have a Kenmore electric oven. The front left burner comes on spontaneously full power for a few seconds without being turned on. The entire heating coil glows read and the surface gets hot enough to trip the hot surface indicator light above the dial for the burner.
Needless to say this is both a personal safety hazard as well as a fire hazard.
The oven is original to the house which was built in 2007.
There is already a recall from Frigidaire (who, despite the Kenmore name, is the real manufacturer here). But the recall does not include this unit, even though the description in the recall PRECISELY matches what is happening to me. A quick search online shows several other reports of the same behavior on SaferProducts.gov and elsewhere online. It is my opinion that the existing Kenmore/Frigidaire recall doesn’t cover a sufficient number of models that are subject to this dangerous fault.

The product, in the report: I have a solid/smooth top range/stove; Kenmore model # 79096114407, serial # VF60432734
I have a Kenmore electric smooth top electric range. The model # 79096114407. One evening as I was getting ready for bed, I noticed that a stove element was on and warm. The switch was in the off position, but that one element was on. I tried turning on and off the switch several times, but the element stayed on. I unplugged the range and checked online the next day. I noticed that several others have reported the same issue, that their stove element comes on suddenly and will not shut off. Kenmore has had a recall on 3 models, but not mine or a few others that I noticed (# [REDACTED] & [REDACTED]).
My concerns are, if I had been asleep or at work, this could have possibly started a fire. Or if someone had placed a hand on the stove thinking it was off, could have gotten burned. Or what is to keep the other 3 elements from turning on without warning. I do not feel safe leaving this stove until all of the switches have been replaced or a new stove. They are aware of this issue on other models.
I am hoping that Sears (Kenmore) will have a larger recalls to cover the replacement of all of the switches that they say causes this issue, because of course all these models are long out of warranty.
Thank you, [REDACTED]

My husband had come home and noticed the house was unseasonably warm. He walked into the kitchen and noticed the oven/range looked like it was on. It wasn’t on when he left. He tried to hit the ‘of’f’ button to no avail. The broiler heating element was still heating up a storm. The oven was so hot we couldn’t even move it to unplug it. We had to shut the circuit breaker off and finally it ceased. We then took potholders to move the range then unplugged it. If he had been out a few minutes longer we would no kitchen or house or dog. The oven/broiler turned it self on and to a higher than suosed to setting. The light bulb and casing melted it was so hot.

I purchased a Kenmore Electric Range (Model 790.42531311) from SEARS just two years ago, in 2014.
Last night, I gently opened the door to check on food when - suddenly - the outer glass panel simply shattered into a thousand pieces on the floor. The shattered glass - with its tiny, sharp edges - was everywhere. Much of it still is - in nooks and crannies - around the kitchen that escaped the vacuum cleaner and broom.
I have 2 kids, 2 dogs, and 3 cats. So far, no one has been injured. Thank goodness no one was peering into the glass when it shattered. Sever injury could have occurred. This product is defective!

08/05/2016 - The consumer was cooking in her oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Approximately fifteen minutes after the oven had been on, the smoke alarm in the consumer’s home went off and her kitchen and living room were filled with smoke. The consumer indicates that a strong chemical odor was emitting from the oven. The consumer immediately opened the oven door and took its contents out. The consumer noticed that her control panel kept flashing F12. The consumer tried turning the oven off but it would not respond and just continued to F12. The consumer had to switch the circuit breakers off in her home in order for her oven to turn off.
The consumer states that she never noticed an actual fire coming from the oven. The consumer states that she cannot supply energy to the unit as it will turn on by itself and heat up immediately; the consumer has been without an oven range since the day of the incident.
08/08/2016 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to informed her that her unit is not recalled and thus is it safe to continue to use. If the consumer wanted any repairs done, she would have to pay out-of-pocket. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.
The consumer plans on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

This oven has exuded a faint smell of burning wire since purchased new from Sears in 2011. Sears sent a technician out twice who replaced a control board but the problem was still occasionally there. The oven always seemed to run hot and we would set it lower than the recipe recommended. The last time we used the oven it ran so hot the entire range became too hot to touch (of course the food burned to a crisp) even when the temp was lowered to 200 degrees. It seemed to go as hot as cleaning mode even though the temp was set to 350. There was a strong smell of burning wire but not sure if that was from a short or from the range being so hot it was cooking the wires

Oven racks are now not wide enough to have support from the side wall rails causing them to fall when any weight is placed on them. Apparently Sears/Kenmore knows about this problem that occurs because the walls of the oven warp to the outside.

Their solution is to spend %500 or so to replace the oven liner and even people who did have had the same event occur again.
This product is dangerous and has caused burns.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
This consumer is reporting her Kenmore Electric Range purchased April 19th, 2016 delivered April 22nd, 2016 but not used for five weeks after delivery.
In mid May 2016 the caller read the manual with regard to ‘seasoning’ the oven by heating it, however there was an extremely strong odor emitting from the unit while she was trying to do this so she turned it off but she and her husband had to leave the house because the odor was so strong. She contacted the manufacturer to complain also mid to late May 2016.
The first service technician came to her home July 14th, 2016 and he took the range apart from the top, from the back and the front and agreed that the odor was exceptionally bad. He said he had to schedule another technician then told her they should be out to her home that same day because he had an injured hand and could not complete some tasks. The technician was scheduled for that same day, however, the caller couldn’t tolerate the odor from the range and had to leave the house so she cancelled to reschedule.
July 22nd, 2016 the second technician came to her home, checked the oven and ten minutes later he advised her that she was “smelling heat” and that he smelled nothing.
She said that between the two technicians and her without them the oven has had approximately nine hours of ‘seasoning’ or ‘burning off’ and it still has a strong odor coming from it.
She is reporting this as a strong health hazard due to the odor the range is emitting.
She said that CPSC has one report from January 2012 for the same hazard for a range.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 30in built-in oven model 790.48363410
I purchased a Kenmore Elite Electric Oven model 790.48363410 on 05/31/2015. Twice since this purchase date, we have had to have the electronic panel replaced because the oven would turn on and off on its own. According to the repair technician, this is a known issue of this model and it is not unique to just my oven. It is concerning that an oven could turn itself on without any user input. This is a major safety issue, and I believe this model should be investigated for a possible recall.

The product, in the report: Electric Range Oven
Approximately May 2012 this caller purchased an electric range for her son & daughter in law from retailer in Hawaii and she reports that the callers had no problems until July 2016.
Sometime within the first two weeks in July 2016 the caller’s daughter in law placed food in the oven set at 350 degrees but she doesn’t know for what time length.
She left the room then heard an explosion maybe 10 or 15 minutes later which prompted her to return to the room and saw that the glass of the oven door had exploded and glass was as near as the range and as far as two feet away from the range.
She is reporting this incident as a severe injury hazard especially if a child or pet had been in front of the range or to her daughter in law if she had still been standing in front of the unit.
There are no injuries being reported
The caller contacted the manufacturer July 13th, 2016 and said she was given one after another with no help until she was provided with a resolution line who referred her to the repair line who offered her a repair for the glass in the oven door at her expense of $100 plus parts and labor.
She is upset about the manufacturer’s lack of commitment and is asking that the repair be completed at manufacturer expense or if she has already paid for repair that manufacturer reimburse her.

The product, in the report: electric range
The consumer put the oven on the bake setting and set the temperature to 375 degrees. The consumer states that he set the oven timer to 21 minutes. The consumer went outside and when he returned to the kitchen a few minutes later he noticed the whole kitchen was filled with smoke. The consumer noticed that the broiler was on (top heating element) and he noticed the control panel displayed the oven temperature at being 500 degrees. The consumer states the “Off” button did not work and he had to shut off the circuit breaker.
The consumer indicated that he waited a few hours for the oven to cool down and turned the circuit breaker back on. Immediately after the consumer noticed the broiler turned back on but the control panel did not indicate that the oven was on.
The consumer then contacted Sears and informed them about the incident. The consumer was told by the Rep. (name unknown) that he would be transferred to the department that could assist him with arranging for a technician to inspect the range. After the consumer was transferred the other Rep. (name unknown) advised him he would need to call 800-638-2772 who would start the report. The consumer was not aware he was being provided the # to the CPSC Hotline. The consumer may contact Sears again to inquire about a repair.
The consumer believes his wife had a similar incident sometime in January 2016 and the oven shut off after she pressed the off button.
The consumer indicated that sometime in 1995 the glass cooktop was replaced due to a chip and the door seal was replaced.
The consumer believes the range poses a fire hazard and should be recalled.

The exterior glass door of my oven exploded. I had warmed up potatoes and vegetables in a 350 degree oven. My husband was cooking the remainder of the meal on the grill outside. He stated that the meat was taking longer to cook than expected and it would be a few more minutes. I returned the vegetables to the oven to keep warm. The oven was turned OFF at this point. I turned to leave the kitchen and heard a very loud POP. Followed by the sound of glass hitting the tile floor. I honestly thought my husband may have walked through the closed glass sliding door. The glass from the oven door was from one end of the kitchen to the other. After the initial pop, the glass continued to crumble to the floor until all of the exterior glass was broken. If a child had been in the room, or if I had been bent down removing plates from the warming drawer, serious injury would have occurred.

After that there was a HUGE bang/pop and a flash of light with a burnt smell. I felt the electrical charge and immediately turned off all the burners. I think it It blew the circuitry for the stove. The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range 790 series
On Sept 8, 2010 we purchased a Kenmore range, 790 series. In 2012, my husband was broiling something and had the door open slightly. Suddenly, there was a loud noise and the glass from the oven door was all over the floor. Thankfully the kids and myself were in the basement. We had the glass replaced. Two days ago my mom was making banana bread while visiting. She heard a loud, weird noise. She looked around the house and couldn’t figure out what it was. Then it was time to check the banana bread. She opened the oven door and the glass fell out on her feet. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt. I started doing some research and this appears to be an issue with these ovens.

The product, in the report: electric range
This caller is reporting her electric range that she purchased sometime between 2011 & 2012 from Sears in North Carolina. She had no problems with this range until April 9th, 2016 when the caller placed a pot of water on the left rear large burner. She states that her house is very small and she walked through it then back to the kitchen, she heard a popping sound as she neared the kitchen and when she entered it she saw fire coming from the control panel/back of her range. She threw baking soda on the six to seven inch flames which extinguished them, she then unplugged the range and has left it unplugged. She is afraid of this range but has kept it for CPSC inspection should they choose to inspect it. There are no injuries being reported. She contacted the manufacturer April 11th or 12th, 2016 and has contacted them a few times since but is being advised that nothing can be done to assist her.

The product, in the report: Kenmore free standing range with self-cleaning oven and warming drawer
Our Kenmore free-standing range turned on the broiler element by itself. The broiler element could not be turned off by the electronic controls. I tried these steps: 1) turned broiler on with electronic controls, wait a few minutes and then back off, broiler still on. 2) turned bake element on with electronic controls and then off, bake element always off but broiler still on. 3)turned on self-cleaning cycle with electronic controls and then off. Door locked but bake element stayed off and broiler element stayed on. 4) turned broiler on high and low, waited 15 minutes with each and broiler element never shut off.
The broiler element would not turn off with any of these steps even though the electronic controls indicated everything was off.
The only way to turn off the broiler element was to unplug the range. Over the next few days I plugged the range back into the power outlet a few different times but the problem continued: the broiler element stayed on and would not shut off.

My problem is the same as described below. My electric range the front burner was not able to be turned off and had to shut off all electric to the stove before I could get it shut off. I called sears and theyplaced the switch with a 60.00 co pay. That was about a month ago. This weekend while cooking the front left burner started the same thing. I called Sears and we could not get it to duplicate so they elected to do nothing about it and tried to collect another 60.00 co pay.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range White/Black
Model Number 790.96011407
Since we moved into this house three years ago, the front large burners have been unpredictable. Sometimes while already cooking on low or medium, the burner would turn on high without me adjusting the dial. I would have to turn the burner off and wait a few minutes and then turn the burner back to low or medium again.
During these incidents, the burner will get super hot and sometimes ruin whatever I am cooking if I don’t catch it in time. If the pan is large enough to cover the burner, you can’t tell that the burner has kicked up to high until your food is burning. Sometimes I couldn’t turn the burner off at all without first turning the knob on and off over and over many times back and forth to get the burner to switch off.
The first time or two this happened, I thought I was mistaken or maybe had missed a spill that was causing it to misread but nope, it is just a short in the system! For three years this has been happening until last weekend when I couldn’t turn the burner off at all. Nothing I did would turn it off. I had to go to the breaker box and cut the power to the range. The range has been sitting dead since then until we can figure out what to do. We did try to turn the power back on just to see if it fixed it but as soon as we did the burner turned right back to high until we flipped the breaker again even with all the burners in the OFF position!!! It has ruined some of my good pans from the heat being too high for them and it has ruined a couple of meals. Not to mention, this is a fire hazard. It’s unsafe to use. I no longer have a working oven. Thanks, Kenmore, a.k.a. SEARS.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite stainless steel 40 inch electric self-clean freestanding, ceramic-glass top range with two ovens.
Turned on oven to 350 degrees and placed chicken and veggies on pan inside. Went into another room and closed door to call my mother. Next thing I new my husband pulled open the door and yelled didn’t you hear the smoke alarm going off and me yelling from the basement ? I said no I was on the phone with the door shut. The oven had gotten so hot that it had burned the food and had ash residue in the bottom as if it was on cleaning cycle. The oven would not turn off at the control and so he had to pull the circuit breaker in the basement. The oven control was flashing F1. We let it cool off and plugged it back in and tuned breaker back on. It proceeded to do the same thing. Turned the breaker off once again and unplugged. Contacted local appliance repair shop and they noted it might be an issue with the EOC. My husband cleaned the contacts on the EOC and the oven started working again. I turned it on today and It doesn’t work at all. This oven is so unpredictable. I am afraid to even try to turn it back on without my husband being present. Had he not unexpectedly came home on that day, I have no debt that my kitchen would have caught fire and I may not have realized it until it was too late. I also want to mention that the side oven is rarely used because it smells like burning rubber every time we try to use it. The product, in the report: Electric 4 burner/1 warmer Range
This consumer is reporting her four burner w/one warmer smooth-top electric range purchased from retailer March 2001 in Kentucky.
She had no problems with the range until sometime in 2014 when the front right burner began turning on by itself and could only be turned off by tripping the breaker off.
The caller has been keeping the breaker turned off and only turning it on when she is going to be cooking and near the range so that she can keep an eye on it. After cooking she has been tripping the breaker back off.
She has been trying to convince Sears to repair the range at their expense because of the nature of the fire safety hazard existing with the over $2,000.00 range but they will not repair the range unless the expense is the consumers.
There are no injuries being reported.
The caller is asking that this range become recalled with free repair at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
The consumer stated that the front left burner fails to turn off. The burner comes on when turned on but does not turn off regularly. The burner automatically heats to really hot temperature. This caused the cook top to get really hot.
The consumer was about to go shut the range off from the circuit when he tried to play with the knob, which allowed to finally turn off the burner.
The consumer took off the knob for now so no one in his home uses that burner.
The consumer stated that he contacted Kenmore about the issues. They informed him that his unit is not under warranty. They informed him that there were no recalls on this unit as well.
The consumer has not experienced the issue with any other burners.

The product, in the report: Smooth top electric range
This consumer is reporting her smooth top electric range that was in Florida home when she moved into it in January 2011.
She thought that the front right and left burners were just a fluke when it never remained at the temperature it was set to and so just never used it very often.
Sometime during 2013 she noticed that the back right burner began changing temperature from the temperature she had set and at that time she was renting, not buying so she contacted the landlord who never had it repaired.
She began just watching the temperatures of these three burners as she cooked to be sure to adjust the temperature.
The house was offered for sale and the caller went to closing November 2015.
With each of the prior incidents the caller was able to turn the burners off then March 17th, 2016 the front left burner came on by itself and she could not turn it off until she turned every burner off then she could turn it off.
She is reporting this recent incident especially as a fire hazard.
There are no injuries being reported.
She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: Electric range Sears Kenmore Model 790.9260
A Sears Kenmore electric range, Model 790.9260, Serial No. VF 11854810 purchased June 1,2011, on two occasions allowed the oven to exceed the set temperature. The second time, November 23, 2015, it heated to the point of allowing the food to burst into flames when the oven door was opened. It was set to 300 degrees, and 15 minutes later the house smoke alarms went off and when I entered the kitchen heavy smoke was coming out around door and under the display panel. I hit the stop button and opened the door, which is when the flames occurred, and an oven thermometer showed its maximum of 600 degrees with the glass broken. The normal allowable temperature a consumer can set is 550 degrees. I knew enough to close the door, so I was not hurt and there was no damage to the house. The smoke dissipated after the doors where open for while. Attached is my letter to Sears Holdings. Sears did provide a small refund against the next range and Iam not looking for further compensation. The design obviously allows the oven to exceed the maximum cooking temperature and rise Into the cleaning temperature without the automatic door lock activating.

Last evening I turned the oven on to preheat and a few minutes later after I had gone into another room, I heard a pop. I went to the kitchen and saw arcs of electricity, great puffs of grey smoke and flames roaring out of the back of the stove. I turned the oven off and sprayed water on the wall in back of the stove because I was afraid it would ignite and burn the house down. I called 911 and told them the flames were out but I wanted a fireman to check to be sure the stove would not later start a fire. The firemen pulled the stove away from the wall, unplugged it and told me not to use it again The stove is a Kenmore electric smoothtop range purchased 12/11/07 from a Sears store in Waterville, ME

The product, in the report: Kenmore black Glass Top stove model 790.9611. 4 burners
Normal use of Kenmore 790.9611 stove. Often, the front left burner will not function correctly in the following ways: 1) after turning dial to a “high” setting the burner will briefly warm up and then turn off. The Element On light remains on, but the light above the dial is off, 2) when trying to use a low heat, the burner will either not turn on or will burn on high, turn the dial to Off and then back to a low heat solves this sometimes, 3) burner will remain on high and will not turn off. When this happens, we have to turn the dial to Off/High/Low/Off or any combination, it takes a few minutes but the burner usually shuts off. These events have worsened over the last two years. For 2016, we have already had this happen at least 10 times.

The product, in the report: The product is a black Kenmore smooth cooktop electric range. It has a five burner cooktop one of them being a warmer zone. This model features the turbo boil feature on the front left. This model has a digital readout for the oven bake temperature, and comes with self cleaning feature as well as air guard.
While using our Kenmore range on the bake setting our broiler element turned itself on. I tried to turn off the oven, but realized that the control panel had started on fire. We immediately unplugged the oven and put the flames out. This range is not safe. This was not a neglect or overuse issue. There is no reason that the electrical connections should start on fire. Our range is kept clean and only occasionally used. If not addressed by the manufacturer I’m afraid that this range will continue to start house fires that put families in danger. When I contacted Kenmore they refused to comment on whether they were aware of the design flaws in this range. They told me they only way they would investigate was if I paid to have a service technician come to my home to inspect the range. The customer rep explained that they would not do anything because the warranty on the range had expired. I explained that I believed this item should be investigated for recall, but she refused to take any information from me.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore smooth top freestanding (not slide in) electric range. The range has dial knobs for the stove top elements and an electric display. When I bought the condo, the stove was included. I don’t have any details on the purchase or the manufacture date.
Our stove is a Kenmore smoothtop electric range with rotary knobs and a digital display (more details below.)
We were using the front left burner to cook. The temperature was on low (2 out of 10 on the dial.) We had the burner on medium heat for 5 minutes, then turned it down to low for the remaining 6 minutes of cooking. After 4.5 minutes on low, the temperature of the burner element increased on its own and became extremely hot, to the point that we had to take the pan off of the heat to keep our food from burning. We turned the knob to Off, but the burner continued heating and the element was red. We jiggled the knob to make sure it was off. After about 2 minutes, the burner turned off. It then turned on again with no action on our part. It continued to cycle on and off about 5 times before we were able to shut off the circuit breaker to the stove.
We are very concerned about the temperature increasing unexpectedly, then about not being able to turn off the burner without going to the breaker box. Fortunately, we were in the kitchen cooking when this happened. There was a real possibility that this could have caused a fire, or that someone could have been burned.
We looked online and found a recall that was similar to what we experienced, but the combination of manufacturer, model, and serial number do not match the recall.
The recall: Frigidaire and Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Ranges Recalled Due to Fire Hazard FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 27, 2009 Release # 09-333 http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2009/Frigidaire-and-Kenmore-Smoothtop-Electric-Ranges-Recalled-Due-to-Fire-Hazard/
Our range is a Kenmore, model 790.96122408, Serial VF64180141 The serial number is in the range of recalls for Frigidaire, but doesn’t meet the Kenmore model number. We tried calling on Saturday night (2/20/16), when this occurred, but it was after hours. I called Sears recall today (800-449-9810), but they did not find our model number on their recall list. I then called CPSC and was told that I needed to file a report because my model number did not match the manufacturer.

2-3 times each month, the front/left burner will increase its temperature to high on its own and will not turn off by normal means (manual knob). The only way to turn the burner off is to unplug it or turn off the power at the break. Although there was a massive recall of 200,000 units, this specific model number has not been included even though it is doing the same thing as those that were recalled. The only option I was given by Sears was to send out a technician at my expense to diagnose and repair.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
This caller’s daughter moved into apartment complex late last Summer 2015 and while the caller and his wife were assisting her with cooking he noticed a safety issue with her electric range in January 2016.
The left rear burner there is a tube that allows hot air from the oven to come up through the center of the left rear burner. He states that the safety hazard he is reporting is that there is no warning that the very back of the range can become extremely hot. Also placing a pan or pot on the left rear burner while the oven is on causes the pan/pot to heat and potentially melt.
He is reporting that with this large hole creates a burn hazard when this heat is released if someone were to touch this area.
Another important fact is that the current design wastes a great deal of energy by letting the oven heat escape through the rather large tube installed between the oven top and the left rear burner. For example, this design allows great amounts of heat to escape the oven, reducing the effectiveness of oven cooking and making it nearly impossible to cook oven meals at temperatures stated in the recipe. As an example of how unreasonable this is, it takes an hour to heat the stove to 450 degrees because of the great escape of hot air allowed by the tube design. Also, imagine how often the air conditioner will kick on to cool the kitchen when the oven is releasing so much heat into the room. Also see attachments showing parts involved.
There are no injuries being reported at this time.
The caller contacted the manufacturer around the second week in January 21st, 2016 and was advised that this is the design and that there have been no injuries.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range glass top 5 burners (boiler, warmer, multi-size, 2 small burners). Color black and stainless steel.
I purchased a Kenmore electric range (model: 790.97423901; SN: VF00546753) from the Sears at Tuttle Crossing store #01120, 5053 Tuttle Crossing Blvd., Columbus, OH 43016 in February 2010. On Sunday, January 31, 2016, I was baking cookies in the oven for about an hour at a temperature of 375 degrees. After baking the cookies, I turned off the oven and left the kitchen while the cookies cooled. About 10 to 15 minutes after I turned off the oven, the outer glass on the oven door exploded and scattered glass across the entire kitchen floor and even into our dining room. The stove is not used excessively, maybe 3-4 times per week at normal cooking temperatures of 350 to 450 degrees for short periods of time. In addition, no damage has ever been done to the stove, e.g., objects hitting the oven door or coming into contact with the glass. We were very fortunate that no one was in the kitchen or dining room at the time as they could have been injured from the flying glass. I am concerned that the oven may be a danger to my family and perhaps others who have purchased a Kenmore range. My concern is whether the glass is defective or if this could be a design flaw causing pressure to build in the oven and cause the glass to shatter.
As a parent of two children, I feel obligated to report this incident to Kenmore, Sears, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission as a safety concern. In addition, I am asking for reimbursement from Kenmore or Sears in the amount of $71.66 for the replacement door glass that I purchased from AppliancePartsPros.com on January 31, 2016. If it is determined that this oven is recalled due to poor design, I would like to request a replacement of my range for a new model that does not have a history of this potential safety concern. I do have pictures of the damage if you wish to review them. Please contact me with any questions. I look forward to your response.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite electric range model 790
I recently purchased a home which came with a Kenmore Elite electric range model number 665.98019800 (model 790) serial #: 10054037NG. Today, my wife set the lower oven to do the three hour self clean cycle. At approximately two hours into the cycle, the middle piece of glass exploded and shattered spewing glass across the kitchen floor. Internet research showed this to be a common problem with this series of Kenmore ovens. There are numerous reports of the glass exploding in the oven door.
