The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

No one hurt Made Apr 18, 2020, sent to the company Apr 27, 2020, published by CPSC May 11, 2020
The product, in the report: Gas/electric stove. Kenmore Elite Dual Fuel Model 790.xxxx, where the last numbers denote the color. Ours is white
When we bought our house, it came with a Kenmore Elite Dual Fuel range, model 790.xxxx, where the last numbers denote the color. This uses gas for the cook top, and electricity for the oven and controls. On April 11, 2020, we tried to set the oven to pre-heat, and when we pressed the START button, the control panel exploded. There was a sound like a string of small firecrackers going off, and flames and black, oily smoke leaped up from behind the stove. While I had my fire extinguisher in my hand, and was a couple of seconds from 911, the flames quickly subsided. Happily, in this case, the front of the panel did not melt and burn, nor did the fir spread to the wall. The circuit breaker did not blow. I had to go turn that off manually, and we can still use the gas if we light it with a match, but the stove itself is destroyed.
This an old unit -- possibly as old as 13 years. If it had simply failed, I would not have been alarmed, but they should NEVER explode into flames!

The product, in the report: White smooth top electric range with double oven with electronic controls.
Kenmore Elite Smoothtop Range Double Oven Left front burner (turbo boil burner) was set to 2 (medium low temperature), but turned up to the highest temperature. I turned it off, but it stayed on. I had to turn off the circuit breaker. Now whenever I turn on the circuit breaker, that burner goes on at full heat. There is a recall for similar Kenmore smooth top ranges for the same problems, which should be expanded to include this model.

No one hurt Made Feb 24, 2020, sent to the company Mar 17, 2020, published by CPSC Mar 31, 2020
The product, in the report: glass top electric range
The consumer stated that about a year and half ago, the rear left burner started beeping after the one year warranty period ran out (October 2019). It got so bad that they would close their bedroom door at night. The Sears purchase will be under my husband’s name ([REDACTED])
On 2/14, the same burner came on by itself in the middle of the night. The next morning, the consumer discovered that a tea kettle that was on the burner had burned and the range’s glass top had cracked.
The consumer contacted Sears, who sent a technician out on 2/21. The technician quoted a price to repair the range.
The product is out of warranty.

The product, in the report: Electric oven
2/8/2020: The oven was set to 350 degree and turned to the on position for approximately 10 - 20 minutes. The consumer’s mother-in-law was in the kitchen and when she attempted to open the oven’s door, it make an unusual sound. The mother backed up a few steps, while the oven door was opened and the exterior glass that covered the entire outer door, shattered. Pieces of glass were still connected to the edges of the oven door. The inner glass remained intact. The mother did not sustain any injuries.
2/8/2020: The consumer called the manufacturer and reported the matter to them. Their rep. said that they could send out a technician at the consumer’s expense, for $120.00. The consumer did not accept that offer.
2/10/2020: The consumer called the manufacturer again and was transferred to 3 different departments. Their rep. reiterated that it would cost $120.00 for them to send out a technician. The consumer is not sure if her mother wants to keep the oven, in light of their safety concerns.
The oven was barely used, except to warm food. The glass was tempered and the pieces of glass were not jagged or sharp.
The consumer said that this could present several safety issues.

The product, in the report: Electric convection oven
The oven was in the home when the consumer’s moved in. This is the very first time they experienced a problem with it.
2/1/2020: (8:30am) The oven was set to 350 degrees and used for 30 – 45 minutes; then it was turned off. The tray to cook bacon was removed from inside the oven. Approximately 25 minutes later, the consumer entered the kitchen and saw the oven door handle was loose and the screws to secure it, were pushed out. The consumer worked in the kitchen area for a few minutes, when the outer oven door blew apart. The oven had a dual glass pane and the clear inner pane, remained intact, but the outer pane shattered. The outer pane covered the entire door.
The glass spread out approximately 10 feet or more and some of the glass flew into the living room. Fragments of glass was found on counter tops, which were approximately 4’ high.
The glass continued to crackle for a few minutes after the incident and it was hot to the touch. The consumer touched a piece of glass and burned his right wrist. He ran cold water over his wrist for 5 minutes. The consumer was extremely concerned because they sometimes place their infant children in the kitchen while working and they could have been severely injured if they were in the kitchen at the time.

The product, in the report: It is a Kenmore “Electric Range” that the former home owners left in the home.
I was using my oven as normally when i smelled the food burning. This was unexpected because it had not been in there long enough for that to happen. When i looked in the oven, the food was burnt around the edges indicating the temperature was too high. I took the food out and hit cancel to shut it off.
It did not shut off when I hit cancel and flashed an F1 on the small LCD screen. I hit cancel two more times and it kept beeping. The bottom element was bright red and the oven was starting to smell like it was on self clean.
With this very dangerous catastrophic failure of the safety features I went to the basement and cut the power.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Glass Top Electric range
I have a Kenmore Electric Gas Top Range. The back plug melted and required a fix under warranty. A repair man was sent out to replace that as well as a burner that wasn’t lit.
After he repaired the burner, the glass cook top mysteriously cracked. It was repaired once NOT under warranty and cracked again the exact same way. The crack is very large and small chips are coming out as well. This is not a result of any kind of physical contact - nothing is touching the cooktop when this is happening.
I called Kenmore and told them I suspected something is happening where the top frame portion is putting pressure on the glass causing it to crack. They said this cannot be the case and the damage is not fixable under warranty.
So their oven continuously cracks glass, which now have a high chance to shatter while cooking.

The product, in the report: Electric smooth top range oven with touch screen
We bought a house that had a Kenmore Elite electric range installed. The unit began beeping as it does when components are turned on. The oven then spontaneously started its cleaning mode. We turned it off and after an hour it began beeping again and the broiler function turned on. My husband recorded this incident on his cell phone.

My Kenmore glass top oven started beeping and flashed F1 on the screen. I went to turn it off and it would not turn off. It continued to get extremely hot and the burners were bright red. I finally had to flip the breaker to turn it off. I thought it was in cleaning mode but as soon a flipped the breaker back on, it started heating again and would not turn off.

The product, in the report: Standard size kitchen range/oven with flat top and four burners.
Left rear range burner was on a “low” setting when it spontaneously heated up to maximum. Fortunately I was home, and noticed a burning smell from what was cooking. I inspected the knob, and it was in the right position for “low” and not stripped out in any way. It had been idling on this setting untouched for hours before it spontaneously heated up to maximum. Had nobody been around nearby, it could have resulted in a fire.
I feel this is important to report because, if the knob components are failing in some way, it is not a safety minded, “fail safe” design, and others may not be as lucky to spot it in time.

Today (9/18/2019) we had started to preheat our Kenmore electric range (model 790.93010) and sparks and flames began to shoot from the control panel and also behind the upper portion of the range. I ran to our garage and cut the breaker for the range and the flames and sparks stopped. I am now left with a house that smells like burnt plastic, an unusable range, and a very traumatized wife.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Self-cleaning Stainless Steel Slide-in stove with glass top and electronic touch-pad glass control center.\ Model 790.42553316
The electronic touch-pad control board on the stove is so sensitive that if a paper towel or the edge of clothing brushes over it it will turn on the burners or oven. This happens even on the outside edges of the control board. It can happen with moisture as well. If a child runs a hand over the touch-pad it will randomly turn on burners, the oven, the timer, warming drawer, self-clean mode.
The only manufacturer option is to lock the entire keyboard every time it is not in use. However, that feature does not work either. Not only does the lock turn on bright blue notification lights that do not turn of, but even with the lock on, it can be turned off with a simple brush of a hand, cloth, paper towel, or drop of water. This stove’s control center is defective and the manufacturer knows about it but has not taken any steps to remedy it. Their answer is to lock the control panel.

Wife gently closed the oven door on our electric range. The outer glass of the oven door window (there is an inner and outer piece) completely shattered, scattering broken glass over the kitchen floor and into the adjoining dining room. No one was injured and the damage was confined to the outer glass window. The glass was cleaned up and I have ordered a replacement window that will be replaced as soon as it is received.
The oven was cold and had not been used in several days. Nothing bumped or banged into it that would have caused the incident. There were no scratches, chips, or other visible damage prior to the accident.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Microwave/Wall Oven Combination 30x24.5x45.5 Model 790.4911
While baking dinner at 450 degrees in our Kenmore Elite microwave/wall oven combination, smoke began to come out of the vents. When we looked inside of the oven, we did not see any food or grease burning and could not determine what was causing the smoke. We turned off the oven to try to let the oven cool. However, smoke continued to come out of the vents and the oven was still hot. Once the oven had cooled down enough to touch with oven mitts, we turned the breaker off and removed the unit from the cabinet. Once removed, we saw that a hole had been burned into the wooden cabinet where the oven had been installed. We also saw that the metal on the bottom of the oven had gotten so hot that it had caused discoloration on the bottom of the oven unit.

I have a Kenmore Electric smoothtop range, model # 790.9611340A Serial # VF80122816 and the left front burner spontaneously turns on (even with dial in the “off” position) and stays on momentarily. It will eventually turn itself off. We are afraid this might be a fire hazard so we unplug the appliance when not in use, but would prefer that Kenmore fix this as this is not something that we have caused. I see that other Kenmore and Frigidare smoothtop range models have been recalled for the same reason.

The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a fire hazard.
She used the oven to heat up sandwiches for about 45 minutes and set the oven to the bake setting at 350 degrees. A few minutes after taking out the food she went to turn off the oven but it failed to shut off and the door locked on its own. She indicated that the control panel had red and green numbers, indicating an error. She shut off the breaker and the unit turned off. She said when they turned the circuit breaker back on the top broiler immediately turned on and she believes the top broiler is defective.
She contacted the retailer today to report the matter and request assistance. They informed her that the unit was not recalled and her warranty expired so they would not provide a free inspection or repair. She was then referred to contact CPSC.
She can only recall three repairs conducted by the retailer under warranty. The control panel was replaced twice due to malfunction. The oven’s bottom broiler was replaced after sparks were coming from it.
The stovetop is used daily and the oven is used a few times a month.

The product, in the report: Electric Range with glass top, 5 burners and Convection. Bisque color.
Kenmore Electric Range with Convection. Color; Bisque. P/N or Model No. from back of Range: 316492239. Purchased approximately February, 2013 from Sears store. On Saturday, March 9, 2019, the circuit board across the top back of my range Short-Circuited. I heard static and several flashes of Flame came up the back of the range. This happened after I had been using the range at 450 degrees for approximately 1 hour and then pressed the Stop “button” to turn off the oven. The Range screen immediately started flashing an Error Code, F10 I think, and the letters ERR and emitting a loud beeping sound. When the firemen came they immediately pulled the range away from the wall and unplugged the power cord. They confirmed that the problem was definitely the circuit board. The back metal panel over the circuit boards was still extremely hot to the touch. The problem was not the power cord. I contacted Sears Consumer Services on March 11th. They did not seem interested in the fact that one of their Kenmore ranges had short circuited and potentially could have easily started a major fire in the kitchen and home. We were extremely lucky it did not start a fire After I left the kitchen. My husband is a double amputee and we would have had great difficulty removing him quickly from his back bedroom to a safe distance rom the house.

Her mother-in-law used the knob to turn on the right rear burner but it failed to turn on and instead she noticed that the front right burner turned on.
She had a previous incident in December 2018 when the left rear and front burner failed to shut off. The submitter believes her mother-in-law used the burners for about 10 minutes on medium heat and used the knobs to turn them off but they failed to shut off. The knobs for the two left burners were removed to prevent the consumer from using them.
The submitter plans to contact the firm to report the unit.

Set to preheat 350 degrees. Waited for preheat light to go off but it did not. Switched off the oven and waited another 10 minutes. Then pressed the preheat button to 350 degrees. After10 minutes the preheat light was still on but heat seemed to be at the right level so I put the NY strip steak into the oven (meat was in a glass [REDACTED] dish) and went to check on it 10 minutes later. The ‘fat top’ of the meat was almost burnt to a crisp which didn’t seem right at the 350 degree temp I typically cook the meat on. I removed the [REDACTED] dish from the oven and got blasted in the face by a extremely hot oven. I set the dish on top of the ceramic stove and before the could step back the dish shattered sending hot shards and pieces of glass onto the linoleum floor (melting the floor where the larger pieces of the shattered glass landed). My son came running to see why I screamed and turned off the oven immediately. We tried to pick up the glass but could not as it was still so hot.
Called Kenmore on Monday to see if oven had been part of a recall. Oven was in condo which I purchased back in 2015 and had been in the condo unit since at least 2011. As I was not the original owner they could not assist me with then it was purchased. They were not concerned that it was a safey issue. My son believes it was the fault of the thermostat.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Range/Oven, glass top electric, 5 burners
My Kenmore electric range/oven has a faulty “off” sensor for the oven. When I turn the oven and set it to any temperature, it heats to that temperature and beeps, but continues heating and never stops. If I leave it for five to ten minutes after beeping, the temperature inside has climbed to 600 degrees. If I never turn it off on the control panel, it continues heating until it reaches a critical temperature and starts making long “danger warning” beeps, and the only way to shut it off is to use the circuit breaker.
The temperature sensor is still accurate, because I have put two other oven thermometers inside to check. The problem is that it beeps when it reaches the desired temperature, but does not tell the heating element to turn off. When I press the “off” button on the control panel, the heating element turns off and stay off. So the only way I can cook in the oven is to manually turn the heat on and off every few minutes.
The danger is that if I do not manually turn it off within a few minutes, it burns the food inside, leading to smoke and possible fire. This is a very serious fire hazard.
My cousin has a similar stove made by Whirlpool (which makes Kenmore) that just had the same problem, so I am reporting it in case others have had this faulty problem too.

The consumers discontinued use of that burner, but they have mistakenly used it once in a while.
The left front burner only has the problem. The consumer noted that he and his wife normally use the right burners, because they are right handed and there is more counter space on that side.
They have not been any injuries and no property damage, but since they became aware of the problem, they closely monitor the use of the range.
The consumer went to the local retailer where it was purchased. He was referred to a Sears number and then he was redirected to Kenmore Customer Care. He also spoke with those companies more than once, prior to being referred to the CPSC Hotline, today.
The consumer is concerned about the potential fire safety issue for his family and believe that this should be addressed by the mfr.
No one at Sears or Kenmore offered to take additional details from the consumer even though he mentioned CPSC Recall# 09-333 and said he felt this presented a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: Top oven of a double oven range
This consumer is reporting the top oven to her 4’ tall, 30” wide double oven range purchased sometime in August 2011 from a retailer in New York. The caller states that she purchased all new appliances at the same time manufactured by this same manufacturer as well as a five year warranty for each appliance. She had no problems with this range until October 23rd, 2018 when she woke up around 8:00AM, went to her kitchen and saw that the top oven to her double oven had turned itself on. She said she had not used the oven in over a month and due to it being very hot figured that it most likely turned on the night before or very early in the A.M. hours. The caller couldn’t turn the top oven off so she went to the breaker box but couldn’t identify which breaker controlled the range.
She called an electrician who came out the same morning but advised her that electric in home appeared to be working fine operationally and he could find no reason for the oven being on without being turned on. The oven is broken & Sears will repair new circuit board He turned the breaker off which also took away her television and some lighting. There are no injuries being reported She contacted the manufacturer also on October 23rd, 2018 and was advised that there are no recalls, no recourse and no warranty and ultimately no assistance from them. She purchased a new warranty - see attachment
If she was not home to shut off the oven it could have caused a fire.

The product, in the report: slide-in type kitchen range - flat surface
My Kenmore (model: 790.92203014, s/n: VF21056996) slide-in type kitchen range caught on fire for no apparent reason. The range broiler was being used to toast a piece of bread when the main control area (clock, temperature indicator, etc.) of the range burst into flames. Neither the broiler area nor the cooking surface were affected. The fire only lasted for a few seconds and no one was injured. The wall behind the range suffered soot damage (photo available) and, if the wall behind the range had not been covered with brick, it would have likely ignited. The circuit breaker for the range tripped and the 3 flames died before we could get to our fire extinguisher.
Looking into the range control area from the rear, the printed circuit board (upper right-hand area) shows signs of soot, melted wiring, and melted components (photo available). No other area of the range appears to have been affected.
This range is approximately 5 years old.
Fearing that a real fire hazard exists in this appliance, this range will be disposed of on 10/26/2018 and we will not be repairing it/returning it to service.

This range is used almost everyday. The oven works fine, its the stove top that has had unsafe issues. There are many, many times when the burner elements don’t turn off when the knob is turned to the off position. ( We have had to pull the plug to get it to turn off) There are many, many times when the element will become very hot (as if on high) when the actual setting on the knob is on low or a small number (such as 1 or 2). The range smooth top has recently started feeling warm to the touch even when the range has not been in use for several hours (overnight). We have been advised by a local repair man to flip off the breaker when we are away from home or at night. 2 of our children have the same stove and are having some of the same problems.

For the second time now the oven control board shorted out at the main power connection and caught fire. The stove was being operated at the time (on both occasions) when the malfunction happened. Thankfully the fire was quickly noticed and the unit was shut off before it could ignite other items in the area of the kitchen. I had the control board and harness replaced after the first malfunction in 2012, and now have had it happen again. This malfunction could have been catastrophic had it not been for someone being right next to the unit to shut it off.

Over the past few weeks, similar occurrences have happened at least 3 times, on an intermittent basis.

The product, in the report: Glass cooktop manufactured for Kenmore in Canada by Frigidaire; SN NF40822446; Model #: 790.44229101. The cooktop was manufactured in February 2014 and purchased new (as a discontinued model) in April, 2016.
Approximately three weeks ago, our Kenmore cooktop, Model #790.44229101, Serial Number: NF40722446, spontaneously ignited at approximately 1:40 a.m. CST. I was not feeling well and was still awake. I smelled smoke and was on my way to the kitchen when I heard the smoke alarm. I hurried to the kitchen and discovered a fire on my stovetop. A stack of paper plates and several other items were in flames and the kitchen was filled with smoke. I extinguished the fire before any damage could be done to our home’s structure and before anyone on my family was injured. My husband and I made numerous attempts to turn the stove off. Each time we turned it off, the rear right burner would reignite This cooktop was manufactured in February 2014; and, we purchased it on 4/10/16. We purchased it as a discontinued floor model and were NOT offered the option to purchase an extended warranty. If this event had occurred 8 hours later, we would have lost our home and, potentially, our children. Our two youngest would have been home while my husband and I were at work.

The product, in the report: Model #79046719602 Kenmore Elite slide-in range, electric
On 5/22/18, our Kenmore Elite Model 79046719602 oven door exploded. This was absolutely a terrifying experience and I have no words for the terror and panic it caused, much less the trauma by glass exploding in my face, on my body, in my feet and in my hair. Our three boys, the youngest 2 years old was terrified.
It literally sounded like a bomb went off in our kitchen. There was glass in our food and the damage went from the oven door all the way to our back door. Shards of glass were stuck in our cabinets by the force. We spent hours cleaning and will likely continue to find glass everywhere leading to I’m sure future injury with additional glass being stepped on by our family.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range, white, smooth top, convection oven.
My Kenmore electric range had an electrical fire that started in the control panel. This occurred while I was using it. I was baking frozen French fries that I have baked numerous times before, same brand, temp, etc. After 10 minutes I checked them and they were burnt (normally cook for 25 min). I removed them and hit “stop” on my range at which time the control panel had an electrical fire. I was able to unplug the appliance before further damage or injury occurred.

The product, in the report: electric range
The submitter is reporting her range for presenting a fire hazard. She states the left front burner remains on the high heat level and fails to shut off.
The issue began a year and a half ago and it has become worse. The submitter said she always turns on the burners to a high heat for a few minutes and then lowers the heat level to her desired temperature. She used to repeatedly press the “Off” button to shut off the left front burner but now she has to shut off the circuit breaker to turn off the burner.
The submitter said she had an isolated incident with the right front burner last month but she is not sure if the issue will persist.
The submitter indicated that the unit is used every other day. Also, that the left and right front burners are used the most.
The submitter contacted the retailer in October of 2017 to report the issue and a technician was sent to inspect the unit. The technician advised them to replace the control panel to fix the issue and the repair was done in November of 2017. However, the issue continued to occur.
The submitter has contacted the retailer again and advised them of the repeated problem. She was told that a technician would be out in a few weeks. The inspection and repairs will be at the submitter’s expense.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Cooktop
As I was preparing an Italian dinner, there were 3 burners on. Shortly thereafter, , smoke started coming from underneath the cooktop. I opened my cupboard directly underneath the electric cooktop and there was a lot of smoke and burnt smell. It is my belief that the cooktop shorted out with the 3 burners on.
We discovered at the electrical box that the plastic cover that holds the cords together had melted. I quickly told my husband to shut the circuit off.
Now I am afraid to use the stove for fear of causing a house fire. When I called Sears Repair, they advise to check if it had been recalled and it had not. Then they advised I report this to CPS.
It is a Kenmore Elite Cooktop. Model Number 79045319410.

L was cooking on the front left large burner and I heard a pop/crack noise. I turned around to look & saw smoke coming out of front left and left front side of stove. I picked the pan up and it was flaring at 7 o’clock, the rest of burner black. We turned it off at the breaker & are afraid to use it since.
I called Sears and they didn’t mention a recall. When I did, the CSR person said “it’s old”. I said “it is doing what recalled models did”.

I have a Kenmore Electric Stove model 790.95043503 with a “runaway” cooking surface - it would not turn off and I had to flip the circuit breaker to cut the power to the entire stove. After about ten minutes I heard a click in the back of the stove and I was able to turn the power back on to the stove and the cooking surface remained off. I called Sears at the number listed on this website (see below) where I was told that my model number was not in the system for recall. They informed me that I should report the issue to CPSR

The submitter turned on the oven to the bake setting at 325 degrees and placed a ham inside. Approximately 30 minutes later, she noticed smoke emitting from the oven and realized the oven was on the broil setting. She immediately pressed the “Off” button but the oven failed to shut off. The control panel still showed the oven was on and the heating element remained extremely hot. The submitter’s husband then shut off the circuit breaker and they have left the range off since.
The submitter said she had a similar incident with the oven a year ago.
The submitter plans to contact the firm and report the incident.
She has a technician scheduled to examine the range tomorrow. She indicated that she does not feel safe keeping the range and plans to replace it, but she will hold on to the unit for 30 days.
The submitter indicated that the appliances in the home were provided by the builder and she moved into the home sometime in 1993.

Caller is reporting that he is experiencing similar problems of recall#09-333. Hazard: Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
Caller stated that the lower right burner turned on by itself. Caller noticed that it kept turning on and off by itself. Caller left a tray on the stove and it caused a fire because of the burner came on.
Caller contacted the manufacturer and they advised that they were unable to assist.
Caller believes that this stove is a fire hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 40” Dual Fuel Range 79075503200
My Kenmore Elite 40” Dual Fuel range, (model 79075503200) which was purchased on 04/09/03, recently malfunctioned. On Saturday, 3/3/18 I was on my second floor at home cleaning all morning. Around 1:30 in the afternoon I heard what I thought was the oven timer going off - quite odd considering I hadn’t been cooking at all that day. When I came downstairs, the display showed an error “F3” and the display was foggy. I tried turning the timer off to no avail. Then I touched the range and noticed quickly that it was hot to the touch. When I opened the oven, I realized the top coil was on max and it must have been on max for many hours. Seconds later the smoke detector went off. Because I couldn’t manually turn the oven off I went to the basement and cut the breaker.
When I called Sears’ customer service, I was informed that I had performed the exact fix that they would’ve suggested (turning off the breaker). I was also told that this model has had these types of issues in the past. I informed the rep that turning the breaker off and then back on was fine (though it wasn’t in my case, because when I did the oven turned right back on again), but the safety hazard in this matter needed to be addressed. After bouncing around from department to department (and setting up a Sears Home Repair call for that following Wednesday for $89), I was ultimately disconnected and never did speak with someone about the safety hazard.
On Wednesday, 3/7/18 the Sears Home Repair rep inspected my range and informed me that the electronic range control panel had “blown” and there wasn’t a repair because the part is no longer made. He also informed me that just two months earlier he’d had to make the same diagnosis on the exact same model.
Today, 3/9/18, I made several attempts via chat to discuss the product safety hazard of this product. Again, I was bounced around with no department wanting to address my concerns. When I asked to speak with someone about my product safety concerns - after the rep had checked for recalls on this range - the number I was given was for the CPSC.
Had I not been home, the oven would have been on high unattended for days. I’m normally not at home during the weekends, and I shudder to think about the consequences.
While I’m disappointed I’m currently without a working oven at the moment, I’m more concerned that this expensive piece of equipment could malfunction as it did. I believe this is a very serious product safety hazard, and should be addressed as such. An oven should not independently turn on - and stay on - for an indeterminate amount of time. Considering how hot to the touch the range was (and was for four hours after I cut the breaker) I cannot imagine how hot it would have been unattended for days.

How can these people sleep at night? Would they buy the product for their own family? This represents a major lack of integrity and honesty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 27 inch Electric Double Wall Oven - Model #790
Our Kenmore Model 790 electric wall oven was on at 375 degrees to bake a chicken pot pie. After half an hour of heating I began to open the lower oven door to check the status. As I did so - the door handle became unattached on the left side. The handle remained attached on the right side - and swung down hanging perpendicular. What to do?
I proceeded to open the oven door a few inches to see if the inner corner screw was loose or missing. As i did so there was a loud explosion. The glass front of the lower oven door shattered. The safety glass went all over the kitchen floor as far as 12 feet. Some bits of glass also landed on a counter top 5 or 6 feet away. If anyone had been looking thru the looking glass when this blast occurred it is likely their eyes and their face would be at risk. It was fortunate I was standing to the side of the oven as i tried to open the door. None of the glass hit me. The inner glass of the oven did not break - only the outer decorative glass. Afterwards I confirmed that the screw holding the door handle was very loose. It appears that when a screw becomes loose the decorative glass front can drop or move. It is foreseeable that this design flaw creates an unreasonable risk.
We purchased this Kenmore double oven in 2007. It worked as intended for 10 years.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Stainless Steel Electric Range with glass top
I was using the quick boil burner on the left side of my stove for approximately 15 minutes while making dinner. I shut off the burner and moved the pan to the unused right side of the range to allow to cool before serving. After serving myself I left the kitchen and went to the living room to eat. Just as I finished and was walking back to the kitchen I heard a loud bang. My glass top had exploded sending large chard’s of glass into my kitchen, living room, dining area and hallway. There were also small pieces of glass in the same area. If I had been in the kitchen when this occurred I could have been seriously injured.

The product, in the report: electric range
The submitter was using the oven to make bacon and had set it to bake at 400 degrees. Approximately 30 minutes later, while the submitter was washing dishes she heard a loud pop noise and when she looked over at the oven she noticed the outer glass had shattered. She saw pieces of glass everywhere and some shards were still on the oven door. The submitter said the middle and inner glass is still intact. The submitter said the pieces of glass went as far as 7-10 feet from the oven and there were large pieces and small pieces of glass. The submitter also noticed that some pieces were sharp and others were not.
The submitter then contacted the retailer and reported the incident. The submitter was advised that the unit is not recalled and they would not assist with free repairs. The submitter was then transferred to their recall department and was told again that her range was not recalled. The submitter then was advised to contact CPSC.
The submitter has read many complaints online about similar incidents and is concerned that these products have not been recalled. The submitter indicated that exploding glass is extremely unsafe and it could have injured her grandchildren who are often in the kitchen with her while she cooks. The submitter said she read a statement issued by the retailer about these sort of incidents and they referred to the racks inside the oven as being a cause of the exploding glass but the submitter does not see how the racks could have caused the outer glass to shatter.
The submitter indicated that this is a second home and she only spends about 6 months at this residence. Additionally, for the past 3 years she has only spent a few weeks of the year at this residence.
The submitter indicated that the unit was delivered to the home on April 16, 2011.
The submitter believed contacting the retailer was the same as contacting the firm.

The product, in the report: electric range
The submitter said that his range has the control knobs at the front and they are extremely sensitive to touch. The submitter said he has had three incidents when the knob was accidently touched and the burner turned on. The submitter said the most recent incident occurred yesterday and the submitter accidently rubbed on the turbo boil knob which is to the far left causing it to turn on. The submitter said there was a kettle with a plastic base on the burner and it caught fire. The submitter was able to put out the fire and clean off the range.
The submitter believes the unit poses a fire hazard. The submitter said he has purposely touched the turbo boil knob and it has caused the burner to turn on. The submitter is concerned the most with this knob because it heats up quickly.
The submitter said he has contacted the firm but they were not concerned with the safety hazard and advised the consumer that an inspection would be at his expense.

These consumers are reporting their electric stove due to safety hazards over the past few years. They have had to replace the left front burner because once turned on it would not turn off approximately three years ago. The caller replaced the circuit board the Spring of 2017 because it was displaying an F10 code and now it is still occasionally displaying the F10 code and giving them safety problems. The F10 does not stop beeping until the callers are able to cool the oven and the only way they can cool the oven off is by unplugging it or flipping the breaker then opening the door. Stove was purchased from an Ohio retailer in 2007. The callers are reporting this as a severe safety and burn hazard. There are no injuries being reported. The caller did contact the manufacturer who referred her to CPSC She is asking that this range be recalled and replaced.

I was cooking on bake and noticed the broiler was somehow on high. I should have known better but moved the roast to a lower rack even though the oven was still on bake and not broil. Eventually the oven must have overheated and a fire started behind the control panel. Sparks and flames could be seen coming out of the top, rear of the stove. We turned off the stove breaker. When it cooled down, I opened the back of the stove and saw the controller board was burnt up. I found many people post online that this was a common issue with this model stove. Model 790.94193310. My stove is just out of warranty but I felt I should report this safety hazard.

We were cooking dinner. Had turkey in oven at 350 degrees for about 3 hrs before cooking on stove top. Were using all 4 burners when two burners were “out of control” and got extremely hot. Seemed to be much hotter than ever before and could not be controlled. We could turn the burner off or on but on was “red hot” only. One of the pots on stove was uncovered and had liquid gravy that seemed to explode and spewed hot gravy on wall, floor and nearby appliances. We could smell something burnt. When we pulled stove out we could see where the wiring had burned.

She said as she was drying down the oven door with a paper towel she sustained a laceration to her right middle finger. The submitter believes the firm should ensure that this stainless steel panel is not sharp prior to selling it. The submitter said she saw many similar reports online and believes this is a common issue with Kenmore ranges.
The submitter said she treated her cut and did not seek medical attention.

the oven portion of the range stopped working. after checking trouble shooting on line I was told that clock/timer control was most likely the cause so I ordered a new one. when the part arrived I went to change it and when I opened the back panel I found that one of the connections to the control had shorted and burnt to the control. since part of the wire harness is damaged I do not feel it is safe to continue to use. I am going to return the new part and purchase a new range. the range is 5 years old and worked fine up till the above problem. I am just glad that it did not cause a fire. The product, in the report: Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Range
Our Kenmore Smoothtop electric range (model # 790.94462700) began sparking and smoking from underneath the cooktop and in the controls when we let the oven door close hard. I tried to reproduce it by letting the door slam (we were still in the middle of cooking), and it happened again. I let the stove cool and removed the back cover panel and lifted the lid. There were two points in the control console were electrical contacts had burnt, and another underneath the surface. One wire had come loose from the rear right heating element and was grounding out on a mounting frame. An L.E.D. indicator had come loose, and one of its wires had welded the unit to the back cover panel of the control console. And a 14ga wire (labeled “line in” on the wiring diagram) had burnt its surrounding plastic clip completely. So, three separate issues that may have occurred over time, but were not noticed until it was dramatic.
