The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range with smoothtop
We bought our Kenmore electric range in July 2013 and I just found out it is made by Frigidaire. On November 2, 2017 I was cooking dinner in the oven when all of a sudden the range started beeping like it does at the end of a timed cook cycle. Being I did not have the timer set, I looked at the range and saw F10 flashing in the digital display and black smoke was coming from the back top of the range. Having a horrible smell, I immediately opened the window and turned on the exhaust fan. I hit the “stop” button, but the F10 continued to flash. My husband turned the breaker off and I looked up the F10 code in the owner’s manual and it is a “runaway temperature”. Looking online, there are so many complaints about this happening, especially with Kenmore models starting with 790 as mine is. Why was there never a recall on this?? The manufacturer must obviously know there is an F10 problem for it to appear in the owner’s manual!!! Reading about other problems with this range, I no longer trust it even if we were to replace the burned electronic oven control so we will be range shopping in the next day or so. Good thing I didn’t decide to run a quick errand while dinner was in the oven!!!!

The product, in the report: Electric Oven Range
10/31/2017 - The consumer indicates that he set the oven to bake cookies at 325 degrees Fahrenheit when approximately fifteen minutes later he noticed smoke coming from the unit. The consumer states that the oven had switched from bake to broil on its own. The consumer opened the oven door and realized the cookies were burnt black. The consumer turned off the oven.
11/01/2017- The consumer tried to bake cookies again however the same thing happened; after approximately ten minutes after he put the oven to bake, the unit was smoking and the Control Panel indicated that the oven was broiling and not baking.
The consumer contacted the Fire Department; when they went over his home they advised him to open all windows and also helped him take the oven range outside.
The consumer believes the Control Panel is faulty and thus causing the problem.
11/03/2017 - The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to at their Claims Department informed him somebody would get back to him within a couple of days so they can set p an inspection date.
The consumer states that prior to the incident, the oven range was used approximately twice daily.
The consumer is unsure if he will keep his unit for the next thirty days.

The product, in the report: The product is a Kenmore Electric Range 790.46789902. It was the Range Oven Door Outer Panel (Black) that exploded (Part # 318304124).
I was cooking a pizza in my Kenmore Electric Range 790.46789902 with the temperature at 425F. I went to open the oven door to take the pizza out, and felt the handle give more than it should. I saw the left side of the handle had come separated from the door where the screw was. As I pulled a little more, the entire front panel of glass on the oven exploded. It burned and cut my skin and clothes, as well as the floor where it fell. When my dog heard the explosion, he came running and stepped on the glass, cutting his feet as well. None of the injuries resulted in a trip to the doctor or hospital, but it could have been a lot worse.

The product, in the report: smoothtop electric range
(10/22/2017) The consumer stated that the broiler element would not turn off. The consumer also stated the unit is about 11 or 12 years old.
On Sunday, while his wife was using the broiler to bake banana bread, an error code came on. The consumer is not sure of the code (maybe E2F3). His wife removed the bread which was scorched.
The consumer tried to turn the broiler off but it would not go off. He had to turn it off at the circuit breaker. The consumer waited for about a minute and turned the circuit breaker back on.
The broiler came back on by itself with no indication that it was on.

The product, in the report: electric range
Today the consumer noticed sparks coming from the right front burner and she smelled a burning electrical odor. The consumer believes the range poses a fire hazard and should be recalled.
The consumer said she had a similar incident in April 2017 with the right front burner and she contacted the retailer to inform them. The retailer sent out a technician to inspect the range and advised her that it was a bad solenoid. The consumer said the range was repaired free of charge because it was still under the one year warranty.
The consumer has contacted the retailer once again to notify them of the most recent incident and they scheduled an appointment for a technician to come out. The consumer said this visit and repair will be at her own expense because the range is out of warranty.
The consumer plans to contact the firm.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range model 790, white
I set my Kenmore 790 electric range oven to preheat to 450 degrees and a few minutes later I heard a strange noise that turned out to be the middle layer of glass of the oven door shattering. I immediately turned off the oven. There were sharp, pea sized pieces of glass inside the oven, in the storage drawer below, and on the floor nearby. Most notable is that the outermost layer of the door and the innermost layer of the door show no signs of damage, but the middle layer of glass is completely shattered.

The oven was in use. Baking at 375 degrees. There was an orange glow coming from the behind the oven and smoke coming from the top edge of the timer. There was the distinct smell of electrical fire. F10 code was flashing on the timer. The oven was uplugged and after opening the back panel, it was obvious the control unit had caught fire and partially burned the wiring harness.

The product, in the report: Free-standing electric range.
We have a Kenmore electric range, model 790.92303011. Yesterday morning, I was sitting at the kitchen table about 15 feet away, reading the newspaper, when the outer glass panel on the over door violently and spontaneously exploded, spewing glass up to 6 feet away. The oven was not in use and hadn’t been for about a week, and there was no one near it. If someone were standing in front of the oven they could have easily been injured by the flying glass. I contacted Sears customer service and was told that they could send a technician to make the needed repairs, but because the range was out of warranty, there would be a service charge of $99 and an additional charge for parts. I find this completely unacceptable for a manufacturing defect that could easily lead to serious injury.

The product, in the report: 30” Smooth glass top electric range
Fire: While baking cookies the oven temperature, set at 350, began to climb. I decided to verify the change in temperature with a roasting thermometer and watched the temperature rise to over 400 degrees. At that point I hit the end/off button and an electrical fire started behind the control panel. Fortunately I cut the main electric panel and the fire stopped short of entering into the wall causing total loss to the range and damage to the back splash.

I had to attempt to turn it off 2-3 times before the burner element finally turned off. (It was at high heat when this happened.)

Two issues: Issue 1: Touch pad is too sensitive. You only need to touch it with your clothes and or a fabric to active the functions. This has happened on numerous occasions.
Issue 2: (most dangerous) While reaching for the above range microwave my body depressed and turned the cook top dial knob on without my knowledge. Upon smelling smoke, I returned to the kitchen to find a wood platter beginning to ignite. Accidentally activating the dial knobs has occurred numerous times, but this is the first time with potential catastrophic results.
My recommendation is for Sears corporation to replace the knob push spring with a much stronger spring. The original equipment spring requires no resistance at all.

My electric range started to turn on automatically. First it would be only momentarily, but today I woke up in the moring with one of the surfaces completly RED. Thankfully I didn’t let a pan on top of it otherwise the story could have been so differently. I bought the stove at Sears, call them and told me I had to call the manufacturer, but they could fix it for a fee. I think they should be responsible for the product they sell. I just sent a message to the manufacturer. But I think they should have let people know of this, it is a FIRE HAZARD.

The product, in the report: electric range
The submitter said she turned on the oven to the bake setting and she put the temperature to 350 degrees. The submitter said she put a chicken in a glass baking dish and placed it into the oven. She also put the timer to 40 minutes. Approximately 20 minutes later, the submitter smelled a burn odor and while she was walking downstairs the fire alarm went off. The submitter noticed smoke coming from inside the oven and she noticed that the oven was extremely hot to the touch. The submitter believes the temperature of the oven was a lot higher than 350 degrees. The submitter pushed the “Off” but the oven failed to shut off. The submitter then opened the oven and removed the baking dish with the chicken. The submitter indicated that the bottom heating element inside the oven was extremely bright orange. The submitter said the baking dish was extremely hot to the touch and the bottom of the dish turned black. The submitter said about 45 seconds after she put the baking dish down it exploded into the pieces. The submitter said the glass cut her on the back of her left leg. She did not seek medical attention. The submitter’s husband told her to cut the circuit breaker and when she did the range turned off.
The submitter contacted the firm yesterday and informed them of the incident. The submitter was told that the range was not recalled and they could not assist her with a repair or replacement.
The submitter believes the range poses a fire hazard and should be recalled. She indicated that she found other reports online for this model having similar incidents.
The submitter said she uses the oven 3 times a week and she uses the stovetop daily.

the glass door on my electric range exploded and glass shattered all over the inside of the oven and when I opened the oven door. This was a new range and the oven had only been used twice before. I was baking a potato at 425 degrees, and after 20 minutes, heard a loud popping noise coming from the kitchen. When I opened the oven door, there was glass flying everywhere inside the oven and onto the kitchen floor. I quickly closed the door and turned off the oven. It continued to pop and explode for another 10 minutes or so. When it stopped, i opened the door and glass was all over the bottom of the oven.

I own a Kenmore stand alone electric ceramic top range that I purchased in 2008. Last evening, a minute or two after I took my dinner out of the over and turned it off, the front glass panel shattered into many sharp pieces. I didn’t see it happen, but it was quite loud. I have pictures, if needed. To my knowledge, nothing had scratched or damaged the glass. I live alone so no one else would have damaged it either.

I have a Kenmore Elite Glass Top Stove. The stove top burner is on and will not turn off. I had to go to my breaker panel to disconnect the range. After it cooled down I unplugged the range. I understand that there was a recall on a similar model with the same problem. I should have been notified. I was lucky to be in my kitchen at the time and notice the problem. There is no excuse for me not being notified. I was lucky to be home.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 790 series smooth top electric range
I purchased a Kenmore electric smooth surface range model # 790.96129406 in 2006. After the warranty expired I began having episodes where the oven handle was becoming loose from the oven door. I eventually had to frequently refasten but sometime, the handle fell off on one side. Then both handles fell off. On one occasion, both handles fell off and the oven door layers split over and the front glass layer fell hard on my shin. (I am a retired woman with some physical limitations.) I stepped back and the layer hit the floor but remained fastened to the oven door. Besides constantly checking the handle, I used the oven less and made do with a little toaster oven. Today, the handle fell off again after heating the oven to 400 degrees AND the glass front fell down again. I was so angry I searched the internet and found many similar complaints along with incidents of exploding glass. Corporate CYA responses included using longer handle screws and the customer buying new parts and pay service calls if needed. Corporate blamed the glass breaking to customer abuse. I certainly did not abuse my glass out the oven door - the defective handle assembly did! I fear the use of this range again for these reasons. I support a recall to force Sears to back their defective product and be fair with their customers. I have my original receipts and a useless range sitting in my kitchen.

Kenmore Electric Range Model 790.97459802 We bought this electric range new from Sears in 2010. We have never damaged this product. We have used the self-clean cycle about 4 times. We have never had any complaints or signs of problems until yesterday, June 27, 2017. Without warning the outer glass door exploded at 4:47 pm CT. Prior to this, we haven’t used the oven in almost a week. The glass was not hot at the time of the incident- Thank God. We were not using the oven or the stove at the time of the explosion of glass. Myself and two young daughters were in the kitchen at the time. The oldest daughter and I were 1 foot away at time of incident. Luckily, we were not injured. This was very scary. The outcome could’ve been so much worse. I don’t understand how an oven door can spontaneously explode. I went online afterwards and have discovered numerous incidents of this happening to others. When will something be done? This is a huge safety issue. We have a picture of the aftermath if you need to see the damage.

We purchased a Kenmore Elite freestanding range in 2010. Model # 79097473805 serial # vf00350220.
The outer glass of the oven door blew out in 2014. We replaced the glass ourselves, as Sears had never heard of the problem before. The replacement part was ordered through Sears.
On 6/21/17 the oven door glass spontaneously blew out again. The glass blew out with such force that the shards of glass flew 3.5 feet, nearly hitting my daughter. Again Sears claims that they had never heard of the problem. I showed the manager several Google search results for this, including one that says the Kenmore products are the most reported for this issue.

I had the oven set at 350’ and was baking a meatloaf. After 15 minutes I walked by the oven and noticed the display said 550 and locked. The stove was hot! I could not shut the oven off in any way. I had to cut the power from the circuit breaker.............. waited almost an hour for it to cool. The adjacent counters were hot and the handle. I turned the power back on and was able to open the oven door. Everything of course was black including the cookware, but....... the oven top element CAME BACK ON!!! Tried to shut off by pressing every button on and off, but could not. It stated cool on and locked. Had to shut the power again. Every time we turned on the power after that, the only thing in the display was the time. Nothing was on,...but the top oven element came on immediately. We have to keep the stove power cut off and have to buy a new stove.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Double Wall Oven (electric), manufactured in Canada
I returned home yesterday evening to the smell of burnt plastic and metal in my kitchen. I was able to localize the smell to the location of my Kenmore Elite Electric Double Oven. When I opened the door to the top unit, I immediately was hit with the same smell of burnt plastic and metal and could see that there had been a small fire in oven. There were obvious burn marks on the perimeter of the door and the top of the oven and smokiness inside of the oven. The oven had not been on that day or for two days prior to that. I do not know what prompted the unit to catch on fire, but am obviously concerned that it may happen again, especially because there are small children in the home. I contacted Sears for help, but they were not at all helpful.

I have a Kenmore Oven, Model # 790.94173310 that came with a vacation house that we built in Nov 2014.
The oven is rarely used as this is a vacation home for my family. While baking cookies on May 29, 2017 at 350 degrees, the inside oven door glass shattered. Thankfully, no children were in the kitchen to open the door when this occurred.
I have contacted Sears and have had no luck on any type of resolution. An extended warranty would be 49.99 per months for a minimum of 12-months. A service call to look at the oven without a warranty is 90.00. The glass repair and parts would be additional charges upon that.
The oven has terrible reviews and complaints of glass breakage on this model’s oven door.
THIS OVEN IS SAFETY HAZARD AND SEARS, KENMORE, ETC, REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THEY CONTINUE TO LET IT GO AND NOT TAKE ONE BIT OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR AN ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE BODILY HARM IF THE SITUATION IS WORSE.

We purchased a new Kenmore drop-in range back on October 6, 2016 (Model # 790. 42509312 - Serial # AF 63301230). Yesterday my wife turned on the front right burner and instantly heard a loud pop and saw a flash at the same time coming from under the top burners. She noticed that the burner that she turn on was not getting warm. When she told me, I raised the top of the stove and saw where the wires that go from the top burners through the sheet metal had arced and burned up. There was no rubber grommet where the wires travel through the sheet metal. This is a serious shock hazzard.

We purchased from Sears a new Kenmore Elite electric double-wall oven Model # 790.48459411 in December, 2016 for our remodeled kitchen. In all instances, when trying to broil chicken, beef, or fish in our top oven, the oven generated so much smoke and grease that our fire alarms (located about 20 feet away between two rooms) would go off. We contacted Sears, and their experienced technicians came to our home and essentially replaced all of the electrical components in our oven and the heating coil. After this was completed, we placed a 1 inch steak on a professional broiling pan in the top oven at 550 degrees, and lowered the rack position to 4 according to the Sears manual for this oven and in less than 4 minutes in the oven (without even opening the door of the oven) the smoke being blown out of the top of the oven was so dense that our fire alarms went off once again. The Sear’s technicians noted this on their report. The steak in less than 4 minutes had thrown grease all over the oven walls, had an excessive amount of smoke in the oven when we opened it, and was cooked well-done in less than 6 minutes without even turning the steak over. We asked Sears to replace the oven, telling them that the oven runs too hot for us to control it. They declined to do so, and told us we needed to reschedule another appointment with the technicians, and assured us in an email that the oven would be fixed. The same technician returned this month (May, 2017) to try to repair our oven. He told us there was nothing further he could do to correct the problem and told us to put foil over the meat when broiling to cut down on the amount of grease and smoke. Inside the oven it tells you not to use foil, which I reminded him of. Then he suggested that we lower the broiling temperature to 500 degrees and once again follow the directions in the Sear’s manual for broiling a 1 inch steak. Again, we placed the steak on the same broiling pan in the top oven (which my wife had already cleaned), but this time lowered the rack to the #2 position, which is a “baking “ position and after 6 minutes opened the oven to turn the steak over and grease was flying everywhere (even on me), The smoke generated once again caused our fire alarms to go off. But I continued the process, and after 4 minutes broiling on the second side of the steak, we removed the steak to see that the exterior of the steak is charred and the interior of the steak is completely rear (uncooked). We have broiled chicken at the lower temperature of 450 degrees and the same issues. The oven is so hot, that the amount of smoke generated is so severe that we can smell the odors in our second story bedrooms. The amount of grease thrown all over the oven worries us that the oven could potentially catch on fire. Again, we asked Sears to replace the oven, which they have declined to do. We have used the oven less than a dozen times in 5 months. Who would want to cook with this oven knowing that the fire alarms are going to go off each time, and that they will have to clean the excessive amount of grease all over the oven each time. The last encounter we had video of which I can supply in a separate cover. There is no doubt that this oven is too hot to handle. One of last solutions the technician gave us was to simply bake everything in our oven, rather than use the broiler. The technician has now told Sear’s management that the oven needs to be replaced and can not be repaired, and Sear’s has still declined to remove the oven. It’s interesting, that when we purchased the oven in Dec., 2016 that the rating given by Sear’s on the oven was a 5 star. If you check it today, they do not rate it on their web-site. I wonder why?

Kenmore Electric Range Model #790.92809012 encountered F10 error code (run-away thermostat) Cost = $899 plus $239 (3-year warranty), purchased 5 years ago.
On Mother’s Day morning, I set temperature to 170 degrees, after placing, chicken, kielbasa and pork loin in the oven. We left the house, however, our Son and 2 grandsons stayed home. We returned home with a lot of smoke everywhere, burnt food beyond recognition, charred oven, ruined chrome racks, ruined insulation, a sick cockatiel (pray she survives), and we made our grandsons stay outside until the smoke cleared. The only way we could turn off the range was to flip the breaker switch (located in basement). It would require a sand blaster to repair the range - the chrome racks are ruined, the insulation is ruined. How do I go about getting a new range w/o having to spend $1,000+ for it?

The product, in the report: Electric range with oven
The consumer turned on the front right burner, so that she could boil some water. The burner had been on for 1 to 2 minutes, when the consumer heard a cracking sound. She walked back into the kitchen and found that the range was on fire. The flames were approximately 12” high. The breaker tripped for the range. The consumer also threw salt on the flames to extinguish the fire. A pan was on the burner at the time of the incident, but it was not damaged. No injuries. She discontinued use of the range.
The range is used approximately once every 2 days.
The consumer called the mfr. and reported the problem to them and a service appointment was schedule (9:00am – 12:000pm) on 5/15/2017. However, no one showed up. The consumer called the firm and was told that she was not on their scheduled list.
The consumer said that she spoke with 4 different people about this matter and each time she called, she had to start from the beginning. None of the reps. were able to locate information from the previous calls.
5/15/2017: CPSC Hotline Rep. ([REDACTED]) called the firm’s Recall #800-449-9810, while the consumer was on the phone. The rep. said that they did not have the consumer scheduled and she check the list against the consumer’s phone number and address. When [REDACTED] provided the model and serial number, the rep. said since they were not included in the recall, they did not schedule the consumer for an appointment.
However, the consumer took time off of work to be home for an appointment between 9:00am - 12:00pm. The rep. did not have any other information for the consumer.
The consumer believe that her range/oven presented a problem similar to the one in CAP# 09-333.

The submitter said the oven racks are defective and they are collapsing when there is a heavy dish on it. The submitter said the first incident occurred on Christmas last year. She put some roast to cook and a few minutes later she heard a loud noise. The submitter noticed that the rack and the dish had fell to the bottom of the oven. The submitter thought it was because the roast was too heavy, however, she had another incident when she cooked scallop potatoes in the oven.
In April the submitter said she searched online and found other complaints for the same issue. She called the retailer, Sears to inform them of the issue and to order new racks. The submitter was told that the problem could be the racks or the inside of the oven and she may need to buy another oven. The submitter said she believes the firm is aware of the defect and not issuing a recall but instead advising consumers to purchase new units. The submitter said she visited a Sears store and noticed that the newer Kenmore Elite ranges have a different oven interior design to prevent the racks from falling.
The submitter received the racks last week and noticed that they do not fit safely inside the oven. She said they also do not sustain a dish. The submitter said she plans to return the new racks. The submitter called the retailer, Sears today and expressed her safety concerns. The submitter said she was transferred to the recall department and she was told that her range was not recalled. She was then given the # to CPSC for assistance. The submitter indicated that she does not use the oven often.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric built in wall oven, Model 790.48789901
On multiple occasions, while cooking food in my Kenmore (mode 790.48789901) electric built in oven, the oven racks (and hot food!) will fall from their slots and hit the Oven bottom spewing hot food all over the oven, and me. This usually happens, upon moving or touching the pan inside. On one occasion, the racks and food fell while the door was closed, shattering the glass pan inside, and contents all over the hot oven. What a mess!, and dangerous mess to clean up. This seems to happen when the oven is used for an extended period of time, or at higher temperatures, 400* or higher. On more than one occasion, I have been splashed with hot food when this happens, causing minor to slightly moderate burns on my arms, and/or hands, and even my chest.
This has happened for many months now and I have been researching the issue, and trying to determine the cause of this issue. We even had a repairman out for another issue, he felt the Oven walls were likely warped.
Upon calling the company, I learned that no recalls were issued on the appliance. When I asked if there were other complaints about this Oven and this issue I was told yes. Many. I asked how many were needed before the company issued a recall, the person did not know. I also searched the product online and found many other consumers had the same complaint. Someone is going to get seriously injured.

My Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Stove caught fire over the weekend on May 6, 2017. I was never advised of any potential recall or fire concern regarding this model. And reviewing online forums, I see that there’s a particular concern plaguing this model. My issue began with popping and crackling noises coming from the stove which immediately resulted in smoke and fire engulfed the back of the range and wall. Fortunately my husband was here and ran downstairs and shut off the power breaker circuit. I contacted Sears and my call was routed to the Philippines. The third-party company indicated that they will notify the manufacturer direct. I should have access to the manufacture myself, as I purchased it direct from the manufacturer. This fire could have burnt down my whole house and potentially cause loss of life. The houses Now has a horrible odor of fire/ smoke. The appliace with sat outside. I was never notified of this concern that has traumatize my grandson after witnessing this incident. The model number is 790. 99113301. I am aghast in never being informed of this important action. Front right burner turns on spontaneously, heats above the degree set (turns to high despite being set to low), and refuses to turn off - have to unplug the stove to turn it off. This issue has caused a small kitchen fire (damaging the linoleum which I will have to replace) when the burner was set on low to caramelize onions and spontaneously went to high heat causing the onions to burn and catch fire. This burner will not turn off when used, causing us to have to unplug the stove for several minutes in order to “reset” it. As a result we do not use the burner. The issue has also caused minor burns when this burner has spontaneously turned on while the stove top was being cleaned. This issue has also caused a situation where the stove must be unplugged between uses in order to reduce the risk of house fire. This has been an ongoing issue for the last year (First incident was in March 2016)

Kenmore electric range model 790 caught fire in the vicinity of the top control panel. No surface burners on, had been preheating oven to 325 degrees for approximately 20 minutes when top of panel began arcing and a fire started, coming from behind panel and scorching wall. Fire stopped when electric breaker was manually turned off. Stove was purchased new from Sears October 2011. No previous problems/indications of a fault with stove. Online search reveals that there have been numerous such fires related to panel controls--extremely hazardous! Sears has not responded to my email re the fire. These units definitely need to be recalled.

The consumer indicated that this is a replacement range because the range they purchased in 2012 had the same safety defect and after it was repaired twice they requested a refund. She said the replacement is a similar model but it is not the same model.
The consumer’s husband used the control knob to set the right rear burner to a 3-4 heat level and he began to cook bacon. The consumer’s husband walked away for 3 minutes and when he returned the rear burner was extremely red and hot. The bacon was burned and close to catching on fire. The consumer believes the rear burner heated to a higher temperature on its own because the burner should not be that hot when it’s on a 3-4 heat level.
The consumer said the burners heat to different temperatures unexpectedly and it has been intermittently for the past 3 years but today was the most severe incident. She indicated that the left rear burner is the only burner that does not display this issue. The consumer said she began calling Sears to report this issue approximately 6 months after she purchased the range and she has complained multiple times over the past 3 years.
The consumer contacted Sears today and informed them of the incident. The consumer asked for them to investigate the issue since this is the second range that has this safety defect and she said they seemed unwilling and they advised her unless the range was unusable they wouldn’t go out to repair it.

We have a Kenmore 790 oven in the kitchen. On April 11, 2017, I went to remove a pizza from the oven. When I pulled on the handle, it fell off one side and the glass oven door shattered. Parts of glass shot so far as to get on our dining table and under the couch in the living room. I called Sears the next day to see about replacing the door and someone is coming Monday, but when I just looked to see if this has happened to others, I found it seems to be quite common and thought I should report it.

When we use the main oven of our Kenmore Elite Double Oven Range Model 790.9750 to cook anything heavy (dutch oven, roast, turkey) the rack collapses on one side and the food drops precipitously. Initially I thought this was due to the rack being installed incorrectly but finally realized that the wall of the oven are bowed out so that the rack does not engage securely. When the oven is cold you can shift the rack to one side so that it disengages on the other side.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric stove range/oven. It is black and stainless steel and model group #790 on the owner’s manual.
The outer glass of the oven door randomly exploded while not being used. Nobody was in the room at the time. This is a safety concern if someone would’ve been in the kitchen at the time as well as attempting to clean it up. The store where purchased as well as company of appliance were called and were not helpful in resolving the problem. Also, this seems to be a known problem already and there is not a recall on this exact model. Even if I fix the stove, I don’t feel it would be safe to have in my home. I also don’t see how this is safe in other people’s homes.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
This caller is reporting his electric range which came with his manufactured home November 2006. This caller is reporting that on Friday, March 10, 2017 his electric range after the baking/bottom element caught fire while oven was preheating. Flames were as high as three inches high and burned the element in half. He uses the oven very rarely but wanted to heat precooked meatballs The caller states that he thought she saw a light and then thought maybe he had left the oven light on but then saw that there were flames so he turned the oven off then threw a wet towel he had been wiping the counter off with which extinguished the fire. He ordered a new element Monday, March 13, 2017 but then thought that he should contact the manufacturer which prompted him to contact the manufacturer Friday, March 17, 2017 after reading that the part was manufactured in Mexico. The manufacturer informed him that it was not a knockoff part and that it was their product. There are no injuries being reported Bottom Element is Part# 316075104

The product, in the report: Kenmore 27” Self-Clean Double Electric Wall Oven (Model #790.48763.900) UPC: 057112103747
I own a Kenmore 27” Self-Clean Double Electric Wall Oven (Model #790.48673.900), purchased Apr-2014. Yesterday, while heating up the oven, the glass in the upper oven door shattered. Fortunately, the glass layer was a middle layer, so I did not have glass all over the oven or the kitchen. As this was a middle glass layer, there was no wear and tear, no scratches, no damage of any kind to the glass layer. It was tempered glass, it did shatter into small pieces.
Calls to Sears customer service were unsuccessful; they refused to come do an inspection to confirm a manufacturing defect.

This is a Kenmore Elite electric smooth top range model 790.46713603 manufactured in 2006. One of the burners will not turn off unless the circuit breaker for the power supply is turned off. The product, in the report: Electric range with oven
The oven was on the bake setting, at 350 degrees, for approximately 1 hour, when the consumer noticed a hot odor. The consumer was cooking a roast and had aluminum foil on top of the pan. He checked the oven and found that the broiler had turned on by itself and the aluminum foil and the top of the glass baking dish had begun to emit smoke.
The consumer turned the oven off by using the control and removed the dish. He left the door open for approximately 15 seconds. The consumer then turned the oven back to the bake setting (350 degrees) and the broiler came back on immediately. The consumer turned the oven off for approximately 60 seconds or more. He then turned the oven back on to the bake setting (temperature down to 260 degrees) and the broil feature immediately came on. The consumer turned the oven off.
He then turned the oven to broil (the high setting) and the oven came on. He then turned the oven off completely and allowed it to stay off for 5 - 7 minutes. He turned it back on to the bake setting (350 degrees). None of the oven lights came on, but the consumer said that the heat in and from the oven was extensive, so, he believes that the temperature was higher than 350 degrees. He continued to increase the oven’s temperature and when he go to 475 degrees, the oven lights came on to indicate that the oven was on. He then turned the oven down to 350 degrees and finished cooking his roast. When his roast was finished, he turned the oven off. During the final cooking time, he heard a constant clicking sound from the oven, but was not sure exactly what caused it. There were no injuries.
The consumer and his wife checked the Internet and saw numerous complaints online referencing the exact same problem, with this manufacturer’s range. The consumer saw that some owners replaced the control panel to address the problem, but others had replaced the control panel 2 or 3 times and the problem continued. He saw incidents for fires and property damage, which claimed to be related to this issue.
3/13/2017: The consumer called his local retailer and their rep. apologized. The rep. said that he could order a replacement control panel for the consumer, but the consumer is concerned that there may still be a safety issue with the unit. He is not sure how he will proceed at this point.
3/13/2017: The consumer called the firm’s Customer Service Dept. and shared his concerns. He asked if the oven was under recall. The rep. checked, came back and told him no. The rep. gave the consumer the number to the CPSC Hotline so that he could report this issue.
The consumer had never experienced any problems with this oven before.
The problem is similar to the ones described in CPSC Recall# 09-333, but his unit does not have a smoothtop surface.

I was cooking dinner and set the preheat button to 425. The buzzer went off but it didn’t turn off. I pushed the clear button and a code of F 1 appeared. I pushed clear again and F 3 appeared. The buzzer kept going off and the clear button would not shut it off. I opened the oven door and it was way too hot to be the temp I had set it for and the heat was coming from a red hot broiler element but I had not set the oven to broil. I reached to try the clear button again and noticed the surface element I was reaching across was hot. I had not been using that element. I looked and the knob was in the off position. I set the element I was using to off but the light showing if there was an element on did not turn off. I immediately turned the breaker off for the range. My husband checked to see if the manual would tell us what the codes represented and determined the computer/wiring had malfunctioned. Because the range was purchased in January of 1998 we decided that we would purchase a new range instead of having it repaired.
Earlier in the day I had mentioned to my husband that we needed to replace the light indicator for the oven temp because it was so light I couldn’t read it anymore. It had progressively become dimmer. When I mentioned this to the salesperson at Sears he said that was most likely an indication that the range was beginning to malfunction. We did purchase a new range.
After we got home we wondered if there was a recall on the old one. I didn’t locate one. I did feel very lucky that I was in the kitchen and had the sense of mind to turn the breaker off. This could have been a real fire hazard. What if I had left the room. Our house could have caught on fire.

Second time. Kenmore range, model 790.97473805.
Was cooking French fries in oven - 375 degrees F for about 20 minutes when the glass door of the oven exploded, sending shards of hot glass flying as far as 20 feet from the oven. Took about 3 hours to clean up all the glass and it still rains glass from the door every time I touch the oven.
The first time my oven door exploded was November 2015. In that instance I found glass 37 feet from my oven. The exploded glass hit my kitchen island so hard that the glass damaged the wood finish.
The oven is subject to normal use and care. We bought expensive appliances and take exceptionally good care of them. There was absolutely no abuse of this oven.

The inside of oven was covered in a burnt film. - A replacement range broiler element (Part #: 316203301) was installed. - Upon plugging the range back into electrical outlet, a fire immediately occurred in the top/back portion of the range in the oven control panel area. - The range was immediately unplugged and the fire continued to burn for another minute and then went out. - Disassembly of the top/back panel was done to view damage and the control panel was blackened and burnt where the flames were. -- No further attempts to repair this range were attempted as it no longer seemed to be a safe appliance.-- Reviewing recalls for Kenmore Electric Ranges showed similar incidents with other models, just not the model we have ... which is why I am reporting this now.

The product, in the report: electric range
The consumer stated that he purchased the product in 2010. About two years later in 2012 the control panel burned up and had to be replaced.
(01/27/2017) The technician came out to check the product because it had not been in use for about two years. The consumer was advised not to use the self-cleaning feature because it affects the electronics in the control panels. The consumer is concerned about this issue because he does not want the product to catch on fire.
It shows on the Internet that the 790 series Kenmore Range has problems with the control panel catching fire. There is action under way for a recall.

The product, in the report: Electric range with glass cook top.
This electric range has large knobs on the front, right about waist height. It is installed near a corner of the counter tops in our kitchen in an area where the coffee maker, food processor and toaster are located. In other words. an active area where a lot of moving back and forth takes place during meal preparation. It is very easy to brush the knobs with a turn of the hip and turn burners on. The knob is silent in its operation so there is no warning that a burner is about to glow red hot. The possibilities of catching something on fire or being burned are real. This is our second stove of this same model. The first was returned under the lemon law rules due to a problem with the clock not keeping time. The first stove also would turn on unexpectedly by brushing past the knobs. We installed that stove in the fall of 2015. The second one was delivered summer of 2016. We told our Sear’s salesman who was able to replicate the problem on the show room floor by brushing past the knobs. It happened several times on the first stove until we removed the knobs when not in use. The second one has had the same problem and it has happened several times since it was installed, Including today.

The product, in the report: This is a Kenmore Elite, built-in electric double oven. At the time of the incident, neither the upper or lower oven had been used in 48 hours. It was purchased in Jan. 2006; installed in May 2006.
I have an electric built-in double oven. The exterior glass door of the lower oven burst and shattered into hundreds of little pieces. (The interior glass of the oven door remains intact.) The oven was off and had not been used in 48 hours. No one was home at the time of the incident although I believe I came home shortly after it happened. The glass on my kitchen floor made a sizzling sound for 30 minutes.
The force must have been strong given the distances the glass flew. I had a dish towel and dish mat hanging on the oven door which directed the majority of glass directly below the oven on the floor.
There were no apparent reasons for the glass to burst. Had a child, adult or pet been standing in front of the oven at the time of the incident, they would have been pelted with flying glass.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top oven range, black
We purchased a Kenmore smooth top oven range several years ago. Within two years, the left front burner started acting up. Since it was outside of the warranty time, and we didn’t have money to repair it, we just stopped using it. The trouble began when I turned it on, and it didn’t turn on. I tried turning it on and off a couple of times and it finally came on. The next issue was that it would not go below high heat. I would turn the dial down but the intensity of the heat stayed high. I turned it off, but it did not turn off. I tried several times to turn the knob different ways to turn it off, but to no avail. I finally was able to turn it off after several tries and the heat was so intense it melted the side of my refrigerator that is next to the oven, and burned my arm. Because the burner is in the front, I had a hard time reaching over the intense heat to turn the knob. I had to wrap my arm in a towel to keep trying to turn it off. I almost called the fire department for fear that it would never shut off. I have avoided using it ever since unless we desperately need to use it. The couple of times I have had to use it, we encountered the same exact issues. I recently found out that there have been recalls on this issue and these ovens. My serial number matches, but my model number does not. The serial number is VF75051333 and the model number is 790.94349700 so sears will not cover it. I strongly believe this model number should be added to the recall list as this is a dangerous and serious issue.

Our Sears Kenmore Elite model 790.98022800 front right burner did not turn off even though the display said it was off. I just happened to notice well after we finished using that burner and turned it off that it was getting hotter instead of cooling down. It was then bright red and burning at the highest level. We could not shut it off. I had to shut off the circuit breaker. I am thankful that I noticed it! I have been researching the issue for the repair options when I saw the recall on the other models. This is serious. They need to expand this recall before someone is seriously injured or killed.

To Whom It May Concern,
Defective electric range complaint by:
[REDACTED]
On December of 2008 I purchased a Kenmore Elite electric range. Model # 79096643700 from the Sears store in Prescott. Approximately 2 years ago the fire alarms in my house went off as I was baking. Flames and smoke were coming from the back of the top part of the range. An F10 error appeared on the screen. The stove was beeping. The oven temperature rose to a very high level. Luckily someone was around to help me. I called the Sears customer support line and was told to disconnect the stove and arranged to have it fixed. The technician who fixed it showed me the melted plastic circuits and wires. The control panel circuitry had to be replaced. He also told me not to use the self clean oven as the high temperature would effect the wires. So I didn’t ever use this again. how scared I was when the stove caught on fire. On December 14th of this year the exact something happened again. I again called the Sears customer support line. I was home alone and had to contact neighbors to help me shut off my fire alarms, disconnect, and move the stove away from my kitchen wall. I was hysterical. This time when the technician came out he said Sears knows this model has a problem because of its 7 circuits. I was lucky because I had help with these fires. Someone else may not be so lucky, they may be burnt or their house may catch on fire.
I contacted Sears customer service to register a complaint and asked them to get back to me. I haven’t heard a word from them. I certainly hope for the sake of others that you look into this matter. I am not risking the chance of this happening to me again. I am not repairing this stove again.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
P.S: I tried to use the form on your website but it would not go through.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 790 electric range
This report regards a Kenmore Elite model 790.9912,serial # VF53157197. I was heating up oil in a fry pan on the large element. I started on high but soon after moved to 3.5 heat setting. What i did not know was that the very inner element stayed on high. I was wondering why the last batch of egg rolls I was cooking was coming out burnt when cooked in the middle of the pan. I tried to turn off the the element and it would not turn off. I repeatedly tried to turn it off to no avail. I had to throw the breaker to eventually to get it to go off. I did some research and found your website with a recall of the Kenmore Elite 790 back in August of 2009.One of the model #’s for the recall was 790.99012 not the 790.9912 that I have, which I find weird since I bought it in 2005 during the time these recalled ranges were made. How does the paint color designation code change the recall or is it just a time frame tool? I believe that the recall should be expanded to all Kenmore Elite 790’s that experience the same problem. How many service calls has Sears taken for this problem in the last 7 years and because there is not a specific recall on a specific model they have no obligation to report the problem to you. I am taking the time to report this to you and also did the research to find the exact problem I was experiencing. How many other people would do this, probably a small percentage. Most people would just call Sears and say “Oh well, it is ten years old”. Of course I also called Sears to have them come out as we all need a range or oven at some point that will not burn your house down. I called the Sears recall resource center and they said my range is not covered but that the service man would double check, but I am not holding out much hope. Sears will be out tommorrow

The product, in the report: Kenmore Black Electric Range/Oven (Model # 790.46589503) (August 2009) (Serial # NF93430619)
(Kenmore electric range model # 790.46589503 August2009) On 9/24/16, I went to open my oven door (it was room temperature) to stick a pan in there. When I grabbed the handle to open it, the glass door shattered. This glass broke into thousands of tiny pieces. Some went in my feet, hands, arms causing slight bleeding and marks. The rest went all over the kitchen. 3 months later I am still finding shards of glass. This oven was not on, it was not hot, I’ve had no previous problems with it. When I called Sears to file a complaint and see if it was still under warranty, the customer service woman did not believe me that it had happened. She said she has had her position for several years and has never heard of a door exploding. I told her it did and offered to send pictures. Either way, she said if it was during the first year it would fall under manufacturer defect, but after that first year it is a “user error.” I did not pic shards of glass off my body for a “user error.” I was extremely unhappy with how it was handled. When I said I was going to file with the BBB or wherever you file safety complaints she got frustrated even more with me. This is not how you do business, Sears/Kenmore! VERY UNHAPPY!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Double Wall Oven Model#790-4819300, Serial#NF10923882
On Thanksgiving, November 24,2016, while cooking a 20lb turkey in my Kenmore Elite Double Wall Oven the lower rack unexpectedly fell resulting in the turkey and liquid falling/splattering all over the open door and interior walls. After two more attempts with different racks and locations the rack continued to fall. We finally were able to get it to stay in place but we could not move the rack or even put any pressure on it as it would fall again. I contacted Sears to report this serious incident and an appointment was made for November 30, 2016, to have it inspected/repaired. During the course of my conversation with the customer service representative she informed me that there is a problem with my oven model with the interior wall warping causing the racks to fall. On November 30th the service technician inspected the oven and did inform me the walls were warped and was common with this model that he informed me Frigidaire actually made for Kenmore. He ordered two “modification brackets”, which I am to install on the racks to resolve the problem. I feel that this is not the correct course of action for such a serious safety issue with this unit. A more permanent corrective action plan should be put in action to resolve this safety concern.

The product, in the report: electric range
The consumer was in the kitchen with her family getting utensils when the oven door’s outer glass shattered unexpectedly. The consumer states that the range was not being used. The consumer noticed that the inner glass is still intact. The consumer indicated that the oven was last used on November 27 and the stove top was last used on November 28.
The consumer states that a similar incident happened approximately five years ago. The consumer was cleaning the oven and seconds after she walked away from the oven the outer glass shattered. The inner glass was still intact. The consumer states that the range was under warranty and the glass was replaced free of charge.
The consumer has contacted Sears and Kenmore to inform them of the incident. The consumer was advised that the range is out of warranty and she would have to pay for the repairs. The consumer is very concerned with the safety of her family because this is the second time the glass shatters. The consumer would like the safety of the glass to be investigated.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
My Kenmore Electric Range glass oven door exploded when it was just over a year old. I was making pizza at 400 degrees. There was a loud explosion and the shards of glass flew everywhere. Sears was not going to replace the glass, but eventually did even though it was no longer under warranty. The technician confirmed it was the brackets holding the glass in the door that had failed. I was told not to use the self-cleaning feature since the high temperatures cause damage to the stove.
Now 3 years later, the glass on the oven door exploded again. We were making pizza again. I am terrified that it might happen again. I have seven kids. If one of them had been peeking in to see what was baking, they could have been seriously injured, if not blinded. My husband called Sears and was transferred around and told it was no longer under warranty. I spent over an hour being sent back and forth between departments. Sears would not discuss repairs or a credit for a new range. I am not willing to risk a third explosion. It is a miracle no one was hurt the first two times. The range cost about $900, since I had wanted a self-cleaning oven.
