The product, in the report: Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Range
For the third time now since having my electric range, all of a sudden while cooking food in the oven, the temperature skyrockets out of controL, burning the food. The food would have caught fire if I was not in the kitchen when it happened. Then, once the burnt food has been removed from the oven, I cannot get the oven to shut off. The heating element continues to burn bright orange and produce major amounts of heat until we shut off the breaker to the oven. In the past, we have been able to turn the breaker back on and the oven has reset itself and has seemingly returned to normal. However, on this most recent occasion, once we turned the breaker back on, the heating element turned back on without us turning the oven on. When we came back into the house about 30 minutes later, we could smell something burning, which was the oven. We had no idea it would turn back on by itself.

I had the oven set to bake. I noticed the oven seemed to be glowing so when I opened it the broiler was on. The panel display was showing bake. When I turned off the oven it popped and sparked behind the range. The main control circuit board on the back was partially melted and burnt.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” Self Cleaning Electic Free Standing Range (white)
We have received this range brand new with the house we purchased, the product is not heavily used, several times a month at the most.
On Friday, 02-Mar-2012 the oven was put on 400 degrees to preheat and bake some dinner. However, the heating element became red-hot and white and blue and sizzling, you can hear noise like fire crackers. Turning the oven off would not stop the process. We called 911 and the fire department came to unplug the oven and to find out the lower heating element had snapped or burned through - see the attached picture.
After the incident I recall an experience from several months ago where the stove would just become red-hot, no matter where you selected it to be between 1 - 10.
This leads me to think that this is an extremely dangerous product with major engineering flow which can cause fire, death and loss of property.
Please take this into consideration as there may be other people who own the product and be unware of what might be coming. The serial number was not found on this site. The label reads the following: Sears Roebuck 911.93712020 / 2L220520Q

Hurt, no treatment Made Mar 1, 2012, sent to the company Mar 8, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 22, 2012
The product, in the report: Kenmore glass top electric range (stainless steel)
On a Sunday evening I turned on my Kenmore freestanding electric range from Sears that was set to 350 degrees. Approximately 10 minutes into the preheat mode, suddenly “for no reason” the front glass shattered into a thousand pieces all over my kitchen floor. It sounded like a gun shot, if I wasn’t standing near the oven I would never believe this happened. Luckily my young son was not standing near the unit as he would have been covered in glass.
I purchased this unit two years ago (Feb. 2010) and have no complaints. I contact Sears and they offered no solution except for me to purchase an extended warranty for $260 to cover the damage.
I later researched this type of incident and notice that I wasn’t alone, many consumers have experience the same thing with similar Kenmore electric ranges. I am only hoping for these type issues to be researched further and a solution to be implemented for this defect.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Oven Model #665.95802 White Electric Oven purchased from sears
February 26th, 2012 I came home to find my Kenmore Oven broiler had turned on by itself. I was unable to turn it off using the cancel button. I had to unplug the oven to get it to turn off. Smoke Detectors were going off, house was full of smoke and smelled of fumes. My 17 year old was asleep downstairs. Thank goodness I arrived home when I did. I started researching online if anyone else has had this happen. I am shocked that others had complained since 2009 up until just days ago. Yet Sears will do nothing to compensate or recall product.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Oven/Range, with convection oven feature and ceramic glass stovetop
The oven was set to Bake at 350 degrees. The top heating element continued to stay on, even after the oven had beeped to indicate that it was preheated to the selected temperature. An F10 error message appeared on the display and a repeated beeping occurred. The owner’s manual instructed hitting the OFF button, but that did not work. The oven continued to heat. Only shutting off the power at the breaker box stopped it. The stove was purchased less than 4 years ago and features a convection oven and ceramic glass stovetop. The convection feature was not in use at the time of the malfunction.

The product, in the report: electric smoothtop range with oven (slide-in unit)
The oven and the broiler began to turn “on”, while in the off position. When this happens, the controls on the range do not work. The consumer had to trip the breaker in order to turn those items off. This happened one day and the consumer thought that he may have done something wrong.
The consumer later turned the breaker back on for the range. The next day, the same exact thing happened, while the unit was in the “off” position. The consumer range’s controls would not work, so he tripped the breaker again and left it in the off position.
(2/18/2012) The consumer went back to the retailer, but their rep. said that did not have any recalls on his unit.
The consumer purchased a new unit from a different retailer and it was delivered on 2/24/2012.
The consumer believes that the stove would have definitely caught fire if he had not been home at the time of the incident.

The product, in the report: Electric Range/Oven (5 Burners)
The consumer stated that she was experiencing problems with the electric range front left burner. These incidents has been ongoing for approximately 6 months. Originally, she was unable to turn burner on. Once it came on, she was unable to power off without using the breaker box. When breaker was turned on again, the burner spontaneously came on by itself.
2/23/12 The consumer called for service and the service agent turned on the burner but was unable to turn it off, she had to switch it off from the circuit breaker.
2/23/12 The consumer contacted the manufacturer and she was advised to contact the agency to find out if the range had been recalled, but it was not part of the recall.
The consumer feels that this product is a safety hazard and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
I own a Kenmore Electric Range, model # 790.9611. 3 times after I have used the large front left burner it would not turn off, even after turning the dial to the off position. The burner stayed bright red until I turned it back on and off 2 more times. The 3rd time this happened, sparks came out of the back of the dial. I called the Kenmore product resolution number to be told there is currently no recall on this particular stove, although there are recalls on the same stove with minor differences and different serial numbers. Seas said they could send a repairman, but at my cost.

The product, in the report: Black Electric Range Smooth Cooking Surface
Top elements coming on by themselves and will not turn off until breaker is thrown. The elements will also turn themselves up from low to to high and not respond to the dials. You definitely can’t leave this stove unattended while cooking. Researched on web and found numerous other Kenmore recalls on other models for the same reasons but are higher end models with the same parts in them obviously. This is a lower end model purchased in bulk by my builder for our neighborhood. I’ve had 3 neighbors have the same issue and since have replaced their range. All called Kenmore to report with no response other than it’s out of warranty. This range IS DANGEROUS.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range
The consumer stated that his electric range is a potential fire hazard as the range shorted out while it was in self cleaning mode. The consumer would estimate that the range was in this function for about 15 minutes before the consumer could hear a loud bang. Almost immediately after, the oven made another loud bang and the circuit breaker blew, shutting off the range. The consumer stated that he was not harmed or injured in the process.
The consumer stated that she did not call the fire department. The consumer called her personal service technician the same day and he concluded the incident took place because all of the connections of the range were loose, causing the range to trip the circuit breaker. The consumer assumes that there may have been sparks behind the range.
The consumer stated that the products damage did not extend to his home. The consumer called the retailer two days later and they were upset that the consumer did not have the range fixed by their services and will not reimburse them for the services rendered by their private technician. The consumer has not called the firm. The retailer’s case number is [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
I had preheated the oven to four hundred degrees, when I put a pan of rolls in the oven the bottom element started to arc and burn. I turned the oven off and it continued to burn until I unplugged the unit. I am have a physical disability and fire scares me. I unplugged the stove and had some of my friends remove it from my home. I wouldn’t even give this to someone that needed it. It is a fire hazard. I have had elements burn on stoves before. But usually when they start to burn, turning the oven off stops the progression of the flames. Not this one. It wouldn’t stop. I am lucky I was standing in the kitchen. This range has been a disappointment. It is only 11 years old. My last stove, purchased in1972 is still working just fine. The two front burners have not worked in over a year. The smaller front burner has welded itself to the stove top. I was heating soup when that happened. The oven was not grease filled I had cleaned it just after Christmas. I have done some research online and it seems that this particular range is a fire hazard. People should be warned about this. Thank you for listening.

Just check out some of the websites- these stoves are dangerous does someone have to die in a fire before this is rectified?

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore electric Range
I have a Sears Kenmore kitchen range, model 790-95414103. It is about 7 years old. Last night, I had a roast in the oven and the range started beeping. It was not the timer, so I checked the oven. The element in the bottom was bright red, my roast was burning, and when I tried to shut off the oven, it would not shut off. I have no idea how hot it was, but when I pulled out the roasting pan and put it on a cutting board, it left black burn marks. The message “F1” was flashing in the window. There was no reference to this error message in the User Guide, so I checked on line and found, to my amazement, that this is a known problem which has been going on since at least 2009. This is an extremely dangerous situation and Sears customers should be notified that this may happen to them. I’m glad I was nearby; I was minutes away from a fire. When I called Customer Care today, I was told that this happens often, but would not be covered because the stove was not under warranty. Having random parts break over time is one thing and you accept that when you buy an appliance; having the manufacturer know that their ranges have a defective part and gamble that it will not cause a fire and loss of property and life is another matter. How do they justify their behavior?

My product is a Kenmore electric range mod# 911.94492990 ser# 911229250 On February 12,2012 while using the oven to bake food, the lower oven bake bake element began to spark and flame on an approximate three inch spot on the element. I turned the oven off with the knob. The flame went away but the element continued to glow orange. After a few minutes later I noticed the element was still glowing on an approximate one inch spot of the element and the oven was still on at over 400 degrees with the oven knob in the off position. I had to turn the circuit breaker switch off to turn the oven off. When I turn on the circuit breaker, the oven comes back on while the oven knob is turned in the off position.

We have Sears Kenmore ceramic top range which has a burner that does not turn off. Despite turning the burner knob, the element beneath the glass stays on Hi. You must disconnect the electrical source to the stove - unplug the 220 or turn off the circuit breaker to turn off the element. When plugged back in the element comes on, despite the knob being turned to “off”. A dangerous situation, as the plug is behind the stove.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Free standing range
The consumer stated that his mother in law’s electric range is a potential fire hazard as it seems to exhibit safety issues cited in release 09-333. The consumer found that the range has instances where one of the range burners will not shut off on command and turn on to a temperature and exceeds the temperature desired. Also, the oven will turn on its broiler element on its own while the oven is set to bake.
The consumer stated that his mother in law’s model is an electric, free standing range with a glass top surface. The first problem the consumer noticed, is that the range would shut itself off intermittently. The consumer stated that these issues have been present almost since the initial purchase. The consumer has yet to call the fire department following any of the incidents or has she called her home insurance company.
The consumer stated that no one has been injured and his mother in law’s home has not been damaged. The consumer does not have exact dates of all the incidents that occurred. On one occasion, she did have a repairman come to the home to repair the product (date unknown) for similar issues. The consumer is unsure of what part was replaced. The consumer did state that yesterday the broiler element turned on while the oven was on and the consumer’s mother in law was baking brownies.
The incident caused the kitchen to fill with smoke. The product would not shut off and the consumer had to have someone shut off the range at the circuit breaker. The consumer’s wife feels that the range is putting her parents life at risk. Over the years the consumer has placed calls to the retailer and the manufacturer and they have not been able to address the issue in between 2002-2006. The consumer mother in law has had problems with the range almost immediately since purchase.

The consumer attempted to power the oven in the off position after using it for 30 minutes on 350 degrees. The range would not power off until the circuit breaker was pulled.
The consumer allowed the range to cool down prior to flipping the circuit breaker on. The oven powered back in the on position without being switched on. The range was then unplugged and the circuit breaker was pulled again.
On 1/26/2010 the circuit breaker was flipped on and the range was plugged back into the outlet. Within a matter of seconds the oven powered on without being switched on. The range was again unplugged from the outlet and the circuit breaker was flipped.
The firm was contacted on 1/26/2010 and the consumer was advised that the failure was with the motherboard. She was provided with the cost of parts & labor. She declined in making any repairs and purchased another range on the same date.
The range is currently placed in her storage shed and has not been used since the failure occurred.

Turned on oven on our 2005 Kenmore electric range model 790.96619401 and a few minutes later we heard an arcing sound coming from the range and a electrical burnt smell.
We turned off the oven and then pulled the range away from the wall and unplugged the range. We took off the upper back cover and we could smell that the timer panel (316418702) was where the smell was coming from.
We are afraid to order a replacement part for about $207 since we don’t know if this replacement timer will be made of better components than the original one.

We had to turn off the fuse at the fuse box. This incident occurred during the evening hours. The Unit is approximately 5 years old. The appliance repair center said that it maybe the control panel and would be cheaper to replace than fix. Our concern is that if we were on vacation, our house may have caught on fire. We left for vacation the following week and just return, the reason for the reporting delay.

The product, in the report: Kenmore stainless steel electric coil top range.
We have a Kenmore electric coil stove which is not a flat top. Model #790.9421340G purchased in Nov. 2009. The electric coils will burn on high even when the dial is set on low. The elements need to be turned off to stop the burner from continueing on high. The elements can be set on 5 and the next next minute the coil is red hot and out of control. This happens everytime we use the stove and believe it is the same problem that the flat top stoves have. It is very dangerous and extremely difficult to cook on this stove top. I was told by sears to unplug it if I didn’t feel safe, but that was all they could do without a service call. I believe this is a safety recall issue and feel they are not acknowledging the problem with these coils and rotary switches. I feel this model and other non flat top models with the digital display and rotary dials should be considered for addition to the recall list. This is especially true if they are experiencing the same issues. It cannot be ignored. There are too many incident dates to include in the form below. They simply won’t fit.

I expected the same for the Sears unit. This unit is seldom used as I am retired and am only home one or two weeks a month. I travel frequently. I am reporting for my Mother. She has had a switch replaced twice on her range (the same switch) for not working (right rear eye). On Jan 10, 2012, another eye would not go off (the left rear eye). She turned the switch off and the eye carne back on. This happened a couple times before she was able to get the eye to stay off. She hasn’t turned it on since. This will be send through mail to address and a signed letter by her with more detailed information will be attached. I have tried to send the letter to Kenmore but no address on their website.

While boiling water, I heard an electrical “arcing” sound from an adjacent room to the kitchen. When I went to investigate, I could smell something electrical burning, then a second flare up took place, behind the stove, in the upper control area. I quickly pulled the stove out away from the wall and unplugged it to prevent any significant damage. Discoloration of the wall was fortunately the extent of the damage.

The product, in the report: Kenmore stainless steel electric range smoothtop
I opened the door of my Kenmore electric range model 790.96213408 and the right side of the handle broke away from the door. I screwed it back together but the next day the handle completely came off when I opened the door. This caused the stainless steel outer part of the door and the glass insert to fall forward while the main part of the door slammed shut.
The top part of the oven door is held together by the two screws that go into the plastic door handle. The screws seem to be way too short; they only go into the handle about a quarter of an inch. The plastic thread ridges inside the handle are worn and don’t seem capable of holding a heavy door together.
Someone could easily be burned if the handle falls off while they are taking something out of the oven and the door slams shut.

She contacted the manufacturer who wanted to charge her $240 to send a technician. The consumer refused.

Sears Kenmore Elite smooth top electric range. Burner on the kept getting hotter and hotter and will not turn off. The model number is 790.99122405. The serial number is VF51815467. The numbers are very close, but Sears informs me that our model is not included in the recall. This is the second time that this has happened. We purchased the stove from Sears on 7/25/2005. After incidents of burners going hotter than they were supposed to, burners not turning off, and finally the burner turning on by itself, we had the stove repaired (at our cost) on June 24, 2007. On February 1, 2012, it started again. One of the burners went to high and would not turn off. We only got it off by flipping the breaker to cut off electricity to the stove.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range model #790.98023800
We purchased a Kenmore Elite range in spring of 2009. Model number790.98023800. In the last couple of months I have noticed that the oven racks will not hold if placed in either of the middle two positions. This resulted in my suffering a minor burn yesterday when the rack fell with a pan of potatoes on it. I have spoke with 3 different departments at Sears and they will take no responsibility at all for fixing this issue. I was told that I should have purchased the extended warrenty. This is an extremely serious issue that will result in serious burns to someone if nothing is done. These ovens need a recall on them. Sears wants to blame Frigidaire because they manufactured them but my purchase was at Sears and they should be responsible. I now have a range that I spent almost $2000.00 on and I can not use to bake. They are many other people on websites such as mysears. com that are also experiencing this. They said they are told by Sears and Frigidaire that “no one else has reported this problem”. Really? Looks to me like a lot of people have reported this problem but no one is willing to do anything about it. I guess when they get sued for a few million dollars they will.

On 1/28/2012 I was using the stove and it would not turn off when I turned the dial off. I didn’t think it was right... but didn’t pay too much attention to it.
On 1/29/2012 I came out of the shower and smelled burning. I rushed into the kitchen and found that the stove top had turned on by itself. The dial was switched to OFF... Had I not been at home, my house would have burned down. I called Sears and told me that there was no recall for this model. MODEL: 790 96122409 SERIAL: VF715 20321
Now I don’t know what to do... I had to unplug it for safety issues and I called Sears for repair but they told me that it was not not on the recall list. Can you make any suggestions? Or do I have to go out and buy a new stove?

The product, in the report: Kenmore white electric range model 790.9642240C
Electric range is Kenmore model 790.9642240C. Using the stove top front left burner, there was a very loud pop/bang and flash from underneath the stovetop surface. I immediately turned off the burner, and later was unable to get heat with or without the “simmer select” switch turned on. I replaced the burner element but range still does not heat. My review of your product reports for this model reveals other reports of similar problems with the same model, so I am reporting this incident in order to provide data to determine if this is a broader product defect.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore Model 96212 Electric Range
My wife pushed the button for “simmer select” on our Kenmore 30 inch electric range (model 96212) which was purchased new at Sears in May of 2005 for $579.99 plus tax. This option has been used a few times before, I am guessing maybe 10 times or so. When she pushed it, it sounded like a shotgun went off with a little smoke, and it kicked off the circuit breaker in the basement. I was concerned about fire, but upon a really quick inspection, all was well. After settling my wife down, I took the back panel off the stove, and noted the circuit board for the simmer select (sears part number 316429301) had burns on it, along with burn marks on the paint behind it. I called Sears, and they wanted to sell me one, and were unable to send me one quickly, so I bought one from our local appliance store for $30.20 plus tax and replaced it. I then decided to look it up on the internet if others had this problem, and came upon the Appliance Repair Forum, where it sounds like multiple people have had this problem. Sears had nowhere to really report this problem.

No one hurt Made Jan 26, 2012, sent to the company Feb 3, 2012, published by CPSC Feb 17, 2012
The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top electric range
In the evening of November 12 we noticed that back left burner was cycling on full power for 1-3 seconds, off for 1-2 minutes and on full power again. All of the control knobs on the range were in the off position at the time and the range was not used for at least 3 hours. The back left burner was not used for at least a week before we noticed that it was powering on by itself. We tried to switch the back left burner off using the knob, but it did not work. We pulled the range from the wall and unplugged it. When we plugged it in the back left burner started cycling on full power for 1-3 seconds, off for 1-2 minutes and on again. We unplugged the range and plugged it in again and at this time the back left burner stopped cycling.
At the time we did not know about the recall due to fire hazard of 4 other models that similar to our range started with 790 number. We thought if we would not use the back left burner it would not be cycling in the future. We were wrong. We never used the back left burner since we noticed its malfunctioning, but between November 12 2011 and January 24 2012 we observed the cycling of the back left burner on at least ten different days. Several times we were able to switch the cycling off by using the knob, other times we simply let it cycling and in an hour or so it would stop cycling by itself. We do not know what forces the back left burner to start cycling because it does it on its own schedule and we do not know when it will start cycling again. On January 23 2012 I lightly touched the glass over the back left burner to check if it was warm and has been cycling recently. The surface was cold but when I touched the glass the back left burner immediately started cycling. On January 24 2012 when I gently moved the range from the wall to unplug it the back left burner started cycling again, although all of the control knobs on the range were in the off position and the range was not used for at least 24 hours. The range is currently unplugged and I hesitate to use it.
Sears was contacted twice and in both cases they told me that we have to pay full price for the repairs. The second time they actually offered 50% discount on the repairman visit ($65 instead of $129) but we still would have to pay for the cost of all parts needed for the repair.
I did the research online and found out that 4 different models that started with 790 number were recalled due to the fire hazard (790.99012, 790.99013, 790.99014, 790.99019), but Sears America informed me that our model that also starts with 790 is not a fire hazard (or at least is not on the recall list). In April of 2011 Sears Canada announced that it will perform a free diagnostic inspection of its customers’ smooth-top or coil element electric range by one of Sears Canada’s trained technicians for any customer that contacts Sears experiencing similar issues to those indicated in the August 2009 and October 2010 safety notices but whose range model and serial number are not included in these previous recalls, to verify whether the range is functioning properly. Obviously Sears America is convinced that it has not to do this for ranges that were made on the same factories, at the same days with the same parts that Sears Canada considers are in need of free diagnostic inspection.
We are not interested in paying for the repairs since all of the burners in our range probably have the same defective parts that regulate switching on and off and without a diagnostic inspection we can’t be sure that the other three burners will not start similar cycling in the nearest future. We are planning to replace the range within the next 1-2 weeks.

I have had a Kenmore Electric range # 790.94339700 since 10/03/2007. several times I burnt food while cooking because the left front burner stayed at Hi temp after I had turned it down. I was always able to turn it on and back off to get it to turn off. Today, 1/25/2012, I was cooking and turned off the burner. Thank goodness I had not left the kitchen as the meal burnt, I tried to turn it off, and after several attempts, I had to pull the stove out from the wall and unplug the range. This is extremely dangerous. I noticed that you have a recall on similar ranges, but not this serial number. Please add it to the recall.

Our ~5 year old Kenmore oven model 790 front door glass shattered overnight with no previous damage or warning. We woke up to see the entire front door shattered with a few pieces of glass on the floor, but mostly intact, indicating it shattered with no impact, but somehow pressure difference or perhaps the metal frame flexing with temperature changes over time weakened it with stress building.
This was a safety concern because if we had children they could have easily gone and found the glass shattered and gotten injured.
Our dogs were who alerted us as they went and were sniffing the glass shards on the floor. Thankfully they were not hurt, but this is unacceptable since this is a product defect.

The product, in the report: Kenmore glass cook top, model number 709.96009601; serial number VF71831578
My Kenmore smooth cooktop/range burner started changing temperatures on it’s own during use. After noticing the problem we discontinued use and used the other burners. On 1/22/2012 the burner in question activated itself to the highest setting without warning, there was a plastic tray on top of the burner that was heated to the point of disfigurement. Upon entering my kitchen, I noticed the “hot” burner warning light was on and tried to rectify the problem. I had to remove the cover of the stove top and physically remove the burner control and seal off the wires. I researched the problem on the internet and came across the “voluntary” recall, in which I realized the problems explained matched mine to the letter but that the serial numbers included in the recall stopped VERY short of my numbers, by about four hundred thousand. After entering my serial number I was told that my “product is not included in the recall and no further action is required”. They could not be further from the truth, this is a very serious problem that could have resulted in the ignition of a fire that could have caused serious bodily harm or death to my family. I feel that they are trying to sweep this problem under the rug and fear there may be others who may not be as lucky as I was in discovering the issue before it was too late.

My wife was in the immediate area and was able to pull the range out and unplug it. It is certain that further damage would have resulted if my wife had not been able to unplug it when she did. It is not likely that we will repair this unit due to the number of concerns with Kenmore Electric Ranges of this type.

Two days ago, the outer glass door of my oven on my Kenmore Electric Range , and the model number is 790096412400, exploded. The oven was not turned on at the time. Shards of the glass shot across my kitchen. Luckily, the person in the kitchen has only a cut on his hand. The kids and the dog were in the other room. The oven was purchased less then two years ago, in March of 2010. Since the incident I have received the run around from Sears and Kenmore.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Flat Top Range Model #790-96119409
I have a Kenmore flat top range model #790-96119409. The large front left burner comes on by itself. The “element on” indicator does not come on to show that the burner is on but the red light under the dial comes on to indicate that the burner is hot, and it is hot. When I have tried using that burner, the temperature does not stay consistent with the temperature that is set on the dial. It either burns at it’s highest or at it’s very lowest setting. I am unable to use this burner because if I turn it on, there is a chance I won’t get it to turn off at all.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
This is the fourth time this happened in last four months. Left front burner heats up high (higher than setting) and element doesn’t turn off when knob turned to off position. This last time my husband was able to get element to turn off after turning knob on and off five or six times. The previous time this happened to me, 3rd time, I spent about five minutes trying to turn knob from on to off positions and vice versa. I even took plastic knob off and tried turning metal post with pliers to no avail. I finally had to go out to electrical box and turn off electricity to range outlet so no electricity was getting to range/stove. I had the electricity turned off for four hours because I had to leave house and didn’t know whether it would turn on by itself (that hasn’t happened yet). I will be calling Sears now because my hasband saw other ranges (not our model) from Sears having same problems.

I have a Kenmore glass cook top electric range model 790.96011407 s/n VF7173147, the left front element on two occasions would not turn off or down. I understand that there is a recall on other models, mine is not on the list. After much research, it appears that the manufacturer has selected a vendor for the element controls that is making a inferior product, and this problem is not isolated to just a few models, but the entire line of glass cook top ranges.

The product, in the report: Convection; black ceramic top w/ 5 burners. Stainless steel body; free standing unit. Special large window pane glass front.
Saturday night my husband was heating eggrolls in the oven and when he went to put on the timer, the whole pane of glass in the oven exploded out except for an inch around the edges. No piece was bigger than a tiny shard. It exploded so far as to find pieces of glass in 2 other rooms. He did not slam the door or hit it at all. In fact, later I found a website, http://www.selectsmart.com/DISCUSS/read.php?34,601635,page=1
that surprised me by having 6 pages of exploding sears glass on ovens that were just sitting and hadn’t been used in days. In almost all the cases, they said Sears told them it never happened before. I called corporate to have them call quality control and warn them, but they insisted I wanted something more.
Please look into this. If I had a small child in the room, it would have been much worse.

Sears did not see this as a FIRE SAFETY issue either - cause I turned off the CIRCUIT BREAKER before a fire broke out. Caller’s 23yr old daughter was in his kitchen on January 5th, 2012 when she noticed that the left front burner on the electric range was on. Caller’s daughter had been cooking about 15 minutes earlier but had turned the burner to the off position and thought it had gone off.
She tried to turn it off a few times then called her father. Father told daughter to turn the breaker off, when he came in that evening he turned the breaker back on thinking problem had been solved.
January 7th, 2012 caller’s wife had finished cooking, she turned the breaker off, it went off but then came back on by itself a couple of minutes later. Caller told wife to cycle through the elements by turning each one off and on until she returned to the left front burner and then she was able to turn it off.
Caller’s now keep the breaker turned off unless they are using the range at the time. He would like to report this range as a fire hazard and ask that it be recalled,
He would like repair at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Range. Model 790.9622240B
We have a Sears Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Range, purchased in 2007. When we turn the left front burner on (which is the “simmer select” feature), it makes a click noise. My husband pulled the stove out, removed the back panel, and looked behind the control knob. He observed visible electrical arc-ing while the burner was operating. He also observed excessive carbon build-up behind the knob, indicating a long-term issue and potential for fire due to exposed electrical arcs. Each time the burner pulses “on” and draws current, another arc happens.
This is not a burner that we use regularly. The issue was detected due to the audible arc-ing sound that my husband (who works in the electronics industry) noted. I would not have known this to be an electrical problem and would have probably used the burner, possibly leading to fire.
He heard this noise about three months ago and instructed me not to use the burner. He just today had time to pull out the stove and noticed the carbon build-up.

Left front burner on smooth top electric range (Kenmore Model 790.9601) turns on spontaneously. We were alerted to this condition by a dish towel that was lying on the burner began to burn.
FORTUNATELY, no one was hurt.
Further investigation, WITH ALL BURNER KNOBS FULLY TURNED OFF, we were able to re-create the situation by placing a teakettle on top of the burner for a few moments. After removing it the burner glowed. We contacted Sears and they said that a product safety form was filled out. They graciously agreed to pay for a diagnostic test. We will be responsible for further labor and replacements of parts.
This is absolutely some kind of design flaw.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 7, 2012, sent to the company Jan 17, 2012, published by CPSC Jan 31, 2012
The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range model 790.9280, stainless steel free-standing
I bought a new Kenmore electric range, model 790.9280, in December, from the Sears in the Holyoke Mall, Holyoke, MA. It was delivered and installed by the Sears delivery crew on 12/12/11. Within a day or two following delivery, I read the “Getting started...” paper (“Read 1st”) and noticed the section as follows: “Q. When I used my oven for the first time there was an odor and some smoking? A. It’s possible to experience some odors and/or a small amount of smoke from your new range. The odor will diminish after first using your oven. Before cooking in your oven for the first time, we recommend that you turn the oven ON to 400o F for 30 minutes minimum. This will allow for an initial burn-in period. You may also ventilate the kitchen by opening a window.”
Thinking this sounded like a good idea, I followed this direction, heating the stove to 400o for approximately 45 minutes, turning on the kitchen exhaust and hood fans, and (even though it was December) opening the kitchen and bathroom windows. The stove produced a noxious odor and I observed some smoke coming from the oven’s vent above the rear left corner of the cooktop. The smell was bad, but not intolerable.
Thinking that this was adequate, based on the information quoted above, a few days later I baked an acorn squash in the oven, at 425o for approximately 50 minutes (I had preheated the oven, too). During baking I noticed a light noxious odor, the same as noted during the initial use, but told myself that this was just “burn in” as above, and that it probably wouldn’t ruin the food. The squash cooked beautifully, but, alas, was inedible: I took one bite, and tasted a horrible metallic/lighter fluid tang, which hit me like a punch to the stomach. I didn’t even compost the rest of the squash, it went right into the trash.
A few days later I baked a small frozen pizza in the oven, approximately 11 minutes at 400o, preheating again, and found to my dismay that its flavor, too, was spoiled by the taste of burnt metal and solvents. I resolved not to bake anything else in the oven until this noxious problem was resolved.
The holidays came and went, but on the evening of Monday, January 2, I thought that I would deal with the oven. After putting my 1-year old daughter to sleep (I wouldn’t want her exposed to nasty fumes), I started this project at about 9 pm. Expecting an odor (but not expecting what subsequently happened), I opened the kitchen and adjacent bathroom windows, turned on the hood and kitchen exhaust fans, and duct-taped sheets over the doorway to the living room. I cleaned the cooktop, removed the wire racks, and wiped down the inside of the oven, which appeared to be absolutely clean. I then turned on the the Flex Clean (self-cleaning) feature, set for 2 hours. After Flex Clean was running for approximately 30 minutes, the smell in the kitchen was so foul that I was forced to turn it off. Smoke was pouring from the oven exhaust vent, though I saw no smoke in the oven cavity itself (though the interior light wasn’t on, so maybe I missed it). The smell was so horrible that it gave my wife a headache almost instantly. My eyes stung and my throat was sore. By 11 pm, while I was trying to figure out how to protect my house and family from the noxious fumes, I had a stomachache, and when I finally went to bed at approximately 11:30, I left the windows open and fans running, despite it being a cold winter night. The odor had stuck to my clothes so I dropped them in the kitchen, but I still smelled it getting into bed: it was in my hair and on my skin.
On Tuesday, January 3 I awoke at 6:30 (before my daughter) to try to clean the house. To my utter dismay, the noxious smell had not decreased at all overnight. In fact, it had seeped through the barrier I had taped up, and was causing my living area to be uninhabitable. Once my wife and daughter had gotten out of bed, my wife did the best she could to keep my daughter from heading to the living room and kitchen. Meanwhile, I scrambled around the house with my HEPA vacuum, hoping that that would reduce the odor. The kitchen was practically impossible to enter, the smell was so bad. I threw the coats, towels, etc. that had been exposed to the fumes in the clotheswasher, and called the fire department. Shortly thereafter, three firemen came to my door with a high-powered fan that they use to clear smoke out of burning houses. They opened a window in every room of the house, and operated the fan for approximately 20 minutes, blowing air out the kitchen window. (This, despite it being about 10o F outside.) After the firemen had gone, my wife thought the smell had decreased, but I wasn’t sure, and within about 20 minutes of their leaving, my sense was that the odor was as bad as it had ever been.
I went to work late on Tuesday, thanks to trying to protect my family from the odors caused by a should-be normal function of this Kenmore range. On leaving, I left the fans running and the windows open. My wife and daughter evacuated the house. On returning home at approximately 8 pm (we ate out, since our kitchen is unusable with the odor), I found that the odor had not abated. To the present (Saturday January 7) the smell has still not abated, and our pattern has remained similar. We are avoiding the kitchen to the extent possible, only entering it to use the sink or access the refrigerator in the evenings and mornings, generally leaving the house during the day.
I have spoken many times with Sears’ customer service about this problem. Eventually they were able to provide a replacement stove. As fine as it is to get a replacement stove, there remain significant problems. My kitchen is unusable (perhaps if I had self-contained breathing apparatus, I could in fact use my kitchen as normal, but I don’t).
I believe my daughter’s health to be in jeopardy simply by breathing the air in my house, based on the ill effects my wife and I are experiencing after being exposed to these odors for a several minutes. I am now thinking that I will need to have professional cleaning done to resolve the noxious odor. One of the frustrations I have encountered is that I cannot discover what the chemicals involved in the odor are, and what the health risks associated with those chemicals are. To have a noxious chemical smell persist in one’s home for several days, a smell that makes healthy adults feel ill after several minutes of exposure, but not to know anything else about it, is very anxiety-provoking, especially when a baby also lives in the home.
It has now been more than five continuous days of having windows open and fans running in my kitchen and adjacent bathroom, 24 hours a day. This has been the coldest period we’ve had since last winter; overnight lows on a couple of the nights have been in the single digits. The noxious odor in my kitchen is scarcely reduced from when I shut the Flex Clean cycle off, and my family and I cannot use the kitchen. We have had to eat take-out or eat out--not our habit at all--each day. Sears’ customer service by phone has not been particularly helpful (I’ve had to explain that it is an electric stove and that there is no gas leak, etc., a couple of times, for example). I believe that we are avoiding the worst exposure, and are therefore protecting our health, but the first night of this incident my wife and I suffered ill effects from exposure to these fumes.
Based on the number of comments on mysears.com, Consumer Reports, and other appliance-related websites, the problem with noxious odors being emitted by new stoves is a known issue. Even with a low-probability occurrence, it is unconscionable for manufacturers of such appliances to not “burn in” stoves in their own factories or other controlled environment. My kitchen should not be the place where coatings, solvents, adhesives, or other chemicals are vaporized after manufacturing.
I have several questions: -- what should I do now? -- what chemicals comprise the odor? -- do those chemicals pose a health risk in this situation (especially to a baby)? -- how do I get rid of the odor? -- what steps will Sears take to ensure that additional range buyers are not subjected to this experience?
I have sent a similar report to Sears via its website, but felt that the situation is serious enough to warrant formal reporting with the CPSC.

The product, in the report: Sears (Kenmore) glass-top stove with self-cleaning oven. Electronic controls (vs manual control knobs) Black color with stainless-steel front. Model # 790.96113409 Serial# VF62347259
I purchased a Sears (Kenmore) glass-top stove/oven model # 790.96113409 for my home approximately 6 years ago. (not sure of exact date). Last evening (1-7-12) my wife was going to bake cookies and turned on the oven to pre-heat to 325. She then said: “there’s something wrong, I think I saw an error code of F10”. We both tried to restart the oven again and noted that the broiler element was actually turning on instead of the bake element (bottom element in oven). I found literature on the stove and noted that an F10 code could be the range probe (heat/temp sensor) or the EOC (electronic oven control board). OK, I understand that parts may fail in appliances. The alarming part is that once I plugged the unit back in, the broiler unit came on “by itself”. I can see where a house fire could occur. If myself or my wife had not been standing in front of the stove observing this, we could have come home to a house on fire. What if my children had discovered this and not known how to handle this and had gotten injured (burned)? I then did some research on line on how to fix this and have noted NUMEROUS reports of others describing the same problem. I think it would be prudent to ask the manufacturers to seek some resolution to this particular problem. I also learned that Kenmore may not be the maker of the oven parts as [REDACTED] and others may actually produce the parts and others may place their name on the end products such as Kenmore. I’m requesting some guidance on what steps to take to move this issue along before a serious incident results in loss of life or someone’s home or both.

The product, in the report: Electric range 4 burners
Consumer states that her electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but CPSC should pursue an investigation on his model and serial number, because his range poses the exact same problem as the one on recall.
The consumer stated that her electric range turned on spontaneously without being switched on (the two front right burners).
Consumer called and explained the incident to a manufacturer rep., (name unknown), who told consumer that they could send a service technician to her house but consumer would have to pay for service. Consumer did not accept the offer.
The consumer feels that the range presents a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Ultra Bake, Large Capacity electric smooth-top range and oven
I was baking at 425 DegF. using my Kenmore Ultra Bake electric oven, Model 665.95802000. I opened the oven door after five minutes and found the broiling element glowing bright red. the oven then beeped and displayed the error code F3E2, indicating a Bake Range Over Temp condition. I pressed the OFF button on the control panel but the broiling element continued to glow. The ultimate solution was to trip the circuit breaker. After 10-minutes I turned the circuit breaker on and the broiler element immediately turned on full blast.
This same F3E2 error has occurred twice previously; once in 2005 and again in September 2011.
After some research, it was determined this is a comon fault with the control board. This uncontrolled operation of the broiling element may result in personal injury or death and property damage.

Tonight my two year old Kenmore electirc range outer oven glass door exploded without any reason. I googled “Kenmore oven doors exploding”, and to my great surprise, and disgust, there were several hundred posts from people who had experienced the same shocking and dangerous experience that I had tonight.
I do not understand why Kenmore has not been forced to issue a recall
If anyone had been standing in front of the oven when this exploded there would have been serious injury,
I am very concerned that CPSC has not done anything about this, despite the clear danger this situation poses for the consumer.

We have a Kenmore Electric Range, and we had a fire in the oven top element. Even when we turned the oven off, it continued to burn. I looked for recalls with this type of problem and found the same type of problems with units that have been recalled. I checked the Model # on my electric range, and it did not match the numbers on the recall. It is the exact same problem that the recalled untis have. This is really not safe. My Model Number is 91199004992 and is a Kenmore Elite the same name as the ones that have been recalled. The upper element started to burn just like if you were welding. We had the oven door a little open because we were broiling some steak. We did not know what to do, we shut the broiler off and it did not stop. I ran down stairs to get to the fuses, and pulled the fuse out. while I was doing that my wife and son were upstairs and the burning started shooting out of the door opening, they ran out of the kitchen, and when I heard them yelling and running, I ran upstairs. Very scarry. It did stop and we unpluged the range.

Started baking cookies on bake setting @ 350 degrees. After 8 minutes the the cookies were blackened and a few were on fire. The broiler was on at a high setting. I turned off the oven and pulled out the burnt cookies. Problem is the broiler did not turn off. I finally had to trip the breaker outside to terminate the broiler element. I waited for 30 minutes and set the breaker, only to find the broiler now comes on by itself, at the highest temperature. After some internet searching, I find this is a very common problem with the mother board controls. Having even found a vendor on ebay “rebuilding” the boards. I would hate to see what could happen with a disabled or elderly consumer in this situation.

The oven was baking at 350 degrees. We noticed that the food item seemed to be burning. We turned the oven “off”, but the heating element did NOT turn off (still glowing bright orange for a couple of minutes after the oven was “off”). We removed the burned food item from the oven, and placed it on the top burner area to cool. A few seconds later, the glass baking dish shattered (exploded) - clearly it was extremely hot. The oven heating element was clearly still ON. I went to the circuit breaker box in the garage and turned off the electric circuit to the range, which of course allowed the oven to turn off and start to cool down. I took a picture of the exploded dish if it is of interest to you.
This is clearly a safety problem, because the inability of the oven to control its temperature could cause a fire.

Oven never turned off once it reached the set 350 degrees. It continued to increase in temperature. That is why my brownies, which normally take approximately 30 mins to bake, were burnt severely and smoking heavily in 15 min.
Apparently the gas shattered when I removed it from the oven because of the temperature change. WHich means the oven reached temperatures in excess of 500 degrees. The glass shattering was a very scary experience. The glass was so hot that it burned the floor and started items smoking in a drawer where the glass landed. I could barely get the glass out of the drawer in time before it started on fire. Then the oven would not turn off. I tried to turn it off , it would not do anything. The then F1 code started flashing. I tried to turn it off for it to reset like the instructions stated but to no avail. The coils inside were still glowing red. The only way to turn the oven off was to unplug it. I plugged the oven back in later to see if it reset per manual. The coils immediately began to turn red even though the oven was not turned on. Upon further investigation, I learned that this was a huge problem with this model. It has led to many fires and the compnay does not stand behind their product.

The product, in the report: Model 790.95204103 Kenmore (electric) range
Kenmore 790 range went into very unsafe full heating mode following about an hour of operation at 325F setting. The oven lower element stuck on in full heating mode and the oven began to get very hot (some cookies were scorched at very beginning of event). A minute or two later, the control panel began to beep and an error code of F1 was displayed. The lower element was fully on (very red), my brownies had turned completely black, and some food debris/ash on the bottom was near ignition. Control panel did not respond. Immediately cut power at the breaker. Smoke filled the kitchen and other rooms of the house, but no damage was done.
Oven should have a shutdown rather than a error code display during a runaway heating event. With 5kW of heating, the oven and surroundings could have easily caught fire, with very bad property damage or injury to my family.
Similar incidents are described on various internet bulletin boards including Mysears boards, it does not appear that Sears has recalled this item or initiated any informal repair. Considering the danger of fire with this type of failure, this is quite disturbing, I do not plan to use this appliance again.
Oven is visibly scorched at the vent locations at the door.
Oven remains very hot after an hour.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric Smooth top stove with convection bake, regular bake and broil. Oven is self cleaning.
Control board on my Kenmore stove all of the sudden went out. I heard a sound that sounded like a wire shorting out, and saw a small amount of smoke. I called Cambell Appliance Heating and Air and was told I needed a control board. I called Sears to order the part and was told this is normal on this model. When we went to replace the Control board, one of the wire and clip bundles have melted onto the Control board making it impossible to replace without buying a new harness. I called Sears to discuss and spoke to [REDACTED] and she said this is a usual problem, but our particular model is not on recall as a fire hazard. A model similar is however.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range freestanding model #790.94223407 stainless/black with coil elements. Serial Number: VP52622466
I have had numerous problems with this range. The most recent incidents are the most disturbing. This range is a safety hazard and should NOT be on the market. On Thanksgiving 2011 I put my turkey in the oven at 350 degrees - after 45 minutes there was a series of beeps, and when I got to the kitchen it was filled with smoke and my turkey was on fire. The oven was flashing a code F10 which I know to be a runaway temperature code as this is not the first time I have seen this code. This is, however, the first time I had food in the oven when the temperature has ‘runaway’. Immediately I turned the oven off, however, it would NOT go off. My husband had to turn it off at the breaker to get the oven to go off. Thank goodness we were home at the time - or this would have burned our home down. Of course, our dinner was ruined as a result and I will not use the oven again after this incident. A few days later I was using the stove top to make a marinara sauce. I went to turn the marinara down and put it on simmer select. As soon as I pushed the simmer select button there was a loud pop and flash. Sauce shot through the air and was all over everything - including the ceiling and me which caused burns on my arms. I am thankful I was not touching the pot at the time - as it had to be an electrical shock to cause the sauce to explode out of the pot and all over my kitchen. If someone were touching the pot they would have been electrocuted. On several occasions I have been burned by this oven as the entire oven gets blistering hot when using it. Additionally, the handle to the oven door is poorly designed as it has fallen off the door on several occasions. This is a safety hazard as well - especially when you are trying to open the oven door at the time the handle fails. Prior to purchasing this oven we had owned a Kenmore for 20+ years and were very happy with it - I am familiar with how a Kenmore oven should behave. This appliance is a danger to everyone and should not be allowed on the market. Sears needs to recognize this fact and remedy this dangerous situation. I would like for Sears to pick up this oven and reimburse me.
