The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Range. Model #790.9611340A Serial# VF71647127

My front, left burner will not turn off on my range. When I was using it one day, I turned the burner off, but it continued to stay on. Then, it will randomly turn on and off by itself and get extremely hot even when I have not used it for the day. I was concerned that this may happen while I am away and a fire could start, so I have to turn off the breaker. Now, Im afraid to even use the stove. When I try to turn the front, left burner on, it will make noises and will not put out the amount of heat the knob is set at. It seems as if is stuck on “high”. Now, the burner wont turn on and my back, left burner is making the same noises. Im worried that this range is going to catch my house on fire. It is a shame.

Kenmore electice range with smoothtop, model 790.9611 serial vf72118411

Front left burner stuck on high, only unplugging will make it go off. When plugged in, comes right back on. Extremely dangerous, can not believe there is not a recall for these models. There is a very similar model of kenmore, but its the elite, that has a recall. Was this ignored since its a builders level range?

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range

The consumer stated that free standing electric range a is a potential fire hazard as oven exceeds the desired temperatures it is set to and would not turn off when the consumer tried to shut it off. The range has a smooth top surface. The consumer was baking at 350 degrees for 15 minutes until the oven became very hot. The consumer had to shut off the oven at the circuit breaker. The consumer stated that her product has not caught fire but did begin to smoke. The consumer stated that the product has not shown any signs of damage.

The consumer feels that the digital panel malfunction may be the cause as she did research and found that the electrical components of the oven can melt and fuse together. The consumer stated that her home has not been damaged by the product and her home has not been injured by the product.

The consumer has not called the fire department after the incidents took place. The consumer called a private service to repair the unit 3 weeks ago and was informed that the part to fix the range was discontinued.

The consumer had the product in her home when the house was purchased. The consumer has yet to call the retailer or the firm. The consumer did mention that her range is similar to those cited in recall 09-333 and poses the same safety hazard. The consumer has not had any issues with the stove top except the power is not as hot as the desired temperature. On one occasion the right front burner did become very hot much like the oven.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Range Model # 790.9611340A Serial # VF71646928 Stainless Steel Smooth Top Range, standard size, 4 burners

As in other postings, I have had difficulty turning off the left front burner on my Kenmore Smooth Top Range. I find that if I wiggle the knob, turn it all the way around a few times, the burner eventually turns off. I stopped using the left side of my stove about 6 months ago, since I realized there were problems with the other side. I haven’t had the burners spontaneously light since permanently stopping use, although when I was heavily using them, I would wake up in the morning to find that the burner turned on again. In addition, the back left burner does not fully heat.

I did call Sears customer service about this issue several months back, explained the problem and was never told about the recall. Although my model and serial # are not covered, one would think that Sears would be proactive about telling customers that this has happened with hundreds of thousands of stoves - I never gave them my product information. I did some research that night and found that the issue I encountered was not an isolated incident.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Self-Cleaning Electric Range

The top element inside the oven (broiler element) came on while baking, when it shouldn’t have been on. It stayed on at full power, glowing orange the entire time. Changed temperature settings on the control panel it is stayed on. Turned off the oven on the control panel, and it still stayed on. Finally had to shut the breaker off to the oven so it would finally stop heating. Similar behavior probably occurred 2 months ago but we didn’t know what happened at the time because the broiler element managed to shut-down on it’s own, but the baked goods caught on fire.

Her husband tried to plug it back up 15 minutes later but the heating element turned bright red again while the knob was in the off position. The product, in the report: Kenmore electric smooth top oven/range

Front left burner of a Kenmore Electric smooth top range stays on high even after the knob is turned off. The burner would not turn off until I unplugged the unit. I called Kenmore because the issue has been noted under a recall however they stated that my product number did not match the ones under recall. The range that I have should be considered under the recall because this is a serious fire hazard and it matches the exact symptoms of the recalled ranges.

The product, in the report: Electric Range (4 burners)

Consumer stated that his Electric Range front right burner spontaneously turned on by itself which caught a kitchen mit on fire , they were able to smother the fire immediately. They were unable to power off the range at the control panel and had to unplug it to prevent further damages.

Consumer stated that for the past week the burners would not turn off completely, he had to keep turning for a couple of mins then it would turn off but now the range automatically comes on by itself.

12/7/11 Consumer contacted the manufacturer and was advised that his model was not part of the recall and that he should report it to the agency.

Consumer feels that this product is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

Sears Kenmore Range door glass exploded across the kitchen for no reason. The range is almost never used and was not in use at the time. No one was near the range and nothing was operating on it except the clock. An explosion occurred and the glass shattered into tiny shards and went flying up to ten feet from the range. Electricity did not short because the rest of the range was operable. This is the black, outside glass on the full range door.

The product, in the report: Kenmore stove oven model79094102702 serial number VF90770006 freestanding electric range white

I purchased a kenmore stove feburary 2009. Model number 79094102702 Serial number VF90770006. free standing electric range. approx cost $400.00. Two weeks ago approx the oven caught fire. My sister burned her hand trying to put out tghe fire. The heating element burned into. After four hours on the phone with Sears and getting disconnected among various comments about repairing the stove. Finally they (customer solutions) agreed to send a person out to look at the oven for no charge. Now the person from Sears told me to replace the heating element at a cost of almost $200.00. How can I be sure the oven will not be dangerous again? Why will Sears be willing to take this risk? I feel Sears should take responsibility for a defective product. The address where the stove is [REDACTED] . My phone number is [REDACTED] . The other number [REDACTED]. You may send a copy of this to Sears customer solutions or Sears CEO. Thank You, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model Number 79096009601 Serial VF65046629

The large burners on kenmore electric range model number 79096009601 suddenly go to the highest setting for no reason. This has happened on both of the large burners on this range. Thankfully someone was in the area when the units went to high and smelled the burnt food and managed to switch off the burner. This action prevented major damage but could have easily resulted in a fire if it had gone unnoticed. The first time it happened I replaced the controlling switch and the problem appears to be resolved with the first burner. However recently the second burner/switch had the exact same problem. I now believe this product is defective and should be recalled as a fire hazard. It should be noted that the manufacturer has changed the part number if a replacement is ordered. Neither Sears or Frigidaire (the manufacturer) were willing to cover the expense of investigating and correcting this problem. They advised me to submit this report.

Late at night (10:00 pm) I noticed an odor like something getting hot. When I checked the kitchen I found my Kenmore range very hot. Upon further investigation I found the broiler unit in the oven on. I tried to shut it off using the touch switch (off/cancel) but the unit remained on. The display did not indicate that either the oven, broiler, or clean had been turned on. No matter what I did, the unit would not turn off and the oven and top front of the range were very hot. I unplugged the range in hopes that it would cancel out anything that was programmed. When I plugged the range in again, the broiler unit in the top of the oven came back on automatically. The only way I could get it to shut off was to unplug the entire range unit. I decided to leave it unplugged overnight and let it cool down thinking that might solve the problem. When I plugged it in in the morning, it did the same thing--broiler coil came on without touching oven, broiler, or clean touch pads. The entire range was unusable because this unit remained on whenever the range was plugged in to electricity. The range is 8 years old, been taken care of and is in excellent shape. I have not had previous problems with it and liked the range very much. However, had I not been home and/or smelled it getting hot, it could easily have caused a fire since nothing short of unplugging the entire unit would keep the top heating element in the oven it from heating. I no longer feel safe having the appliance in my home if repaired using parts that are supplied by the manufacturer and could result in the same occurance.

My Sears Kenmore electric, smooth top range, model number beginning with 655, nearly burned down the house this weekend. The broiler came on by itself and superheated, filling the house with smoke and toxic fumes. Walls and adjacent counters also hot. Nothing appeared on the display. The cancel/off would not work. Stove had to be pulled out and unplugged to make it stop. Thank god I was home and heard the smoke alarms from outside. The house still smells like burned plastic and wiring. This is an extremely dangerous and scary malfunction.

I own a Kenmore Electric smooth top electric oven Model number #665.95794000. We set the oven to 350 degrees to bake cookies. The top element of the stove never turned off, so the cookies started to burn. We took the cookies out, and turned the oven off. 10 minutes later, I noticed the inside of the oven was glowing red, so I looked, and the top element was still on. When I opened up the oven, a puff of black smoke came out of the oven. I tried to turn the oven on and off several times, but it did not turn off. I finally had to run downstairs and turn the breaker off. My incident is similar to many on this post.

On Friday, November 18th, 2011 caller’s wife placed 15lb turkey in oven set at 250 degrees to bake slowly overnight, however around 4 o’clock A.M. caller went into the kitchen because he heard the beeper sounding.

The range was flashing an “F1” code, both caller and his wife tried to turn the range off but could not, the oven burner just continued to burn red hot until caller went to basement and turned the circuit breaker off. He tried to turn stove back on for normal use but could not do so because it kept turning back on at a high temperature. One time he left it off overnight and it still began heating to and extremely high temperature.

He compared the temperature to that of the self cleaning temperature. Caller contacted manufacturer today, spoke with 4 or 5 people ([REDACTED] was the last one), was told only that there had been no problem known. Caller asking how many people had reported this issue. told him how to access on saferproducts and to pull FOIL rp.

After using my Kenmore model 790.95300 Flat Top Range at 170 degrees, I turned the oven off. About a half hour later, my fire alarm went off. I ran downstairs and noticed a bunch of smoke in the kitchen. I opened my oven door and noticed that the heating elements were glowing extremely bright, as if my oven was on full heat. When I looked at the buttons, the oven was still showing as off. I turned the oven on and then back off again, but the element would not turn off. There was a bunch of smoke pouring from the oven. I then went and flipped the breaker outstide. I completed a search on the internet and noticed there were at least 25 other people complaining about this exact problem with this same model.

We own a Sears Kenmore smooth top range oven, model #79096009601, serial # VF71649412. This oven is only 3 years old, installed new in a newly built home, and the front burners will turn on to high by themselves once turned off and get stuck in the high position. The rear left back burner now does not function as it turns on and then off repeatedly no matter what temperature, so cannot get a consistent cooking degree. We have woken up to our son informing us the stove burner was on, when it had previously been off, and my husband has burnt his hand, thinking the burner had been off and resulting in the pan getting so hot that when he grabbed it he sustained a burn to his hand. This is a fire hazard and is similar to what I am seeing online in another model that was recalled by Sears, similar make, etc. We cannot cook on any burners but one now, and this issue needs to be resolved, as I have lost complete faith in Sears/Kenmore products and will not recommend them to anyone I know professionally or personally.

Kenmore Electric Range, Model # 790.9371002, Serial # VF217126 began “beeping” and flashing an FI error on the screen while baking. I removed whatever I was cooking in the oven (can’t remember what it was) and tried to turn off the range by pressing the off button on the control screen. It would not turn off! It continued to “beep” and flash the F1 error. I noticed that the oven’s lower burner element was getting increasingly hot, very hot and glowing red. The range still would not turn off! I went to the breaker box and flipped the breaker for the range “off”. I have not used the range since. I have not flipped the breaker back “on.”

This appliance is a fire hazard! I have seen other reports on the Internet in which the same type of incident happened. I purchased my range new around July 2002 (approximate) from Sears. It seems the stove should last longer than nine years? I have ordered a new range as I am too afraid to use this fire hazard of a cooking appliance. The incident range will be removed on November 18, 2011, and replaced with a new one.

After much research, it appears that the manufacturer has selected a vendor for the element controls that is making a inferior product, and this problem is not isolated to just a few models, but the entire line of glass cook top ranges.

Watching World Series, heard loud explosion coming from the kitchen. I thought it was a gas explosion, but I do not have any gas. I went and saw the front of the range had exploded outwardly into many thousands of small pieces all over the kitchen. I have not have any help from Sears, at many different numbers. One was customer solutions, and would not stand be hide the product because it was out of warranty. They said it was an insurance problem. Then they also said they had to document it. I was charged a service call for them to come out and document it. They would come out and replace the door at my cost. I am afraid to replace the door and am planning on buying a stove somewhere else.

The burners on my Kenmore smoothtop range, Model 790.96011407, Serial #VF71052791, frequently do not turn off after the controls have been turned off. Had I not been paying attention, this could easily have been a fire hazard. By turning the controls back on and off a few times, after 10 minutes or so, I was eventually able to get the range to register that the controls had been turned to “off”. I see a recall on record for Kenmore Elite models with a similar number, but not for mine, but the problems we’ve encountered seem the same.

The large, front left burner was having troubles with heat control and was still on “high” when the knob was turned to the off position.

In the days leading up to the burner not being able to be turned off, there were heat control issues. Specifically, the burner would be on high heat instead of on medium or low heat, causing much of the food to burn and it actually damaged a skillet due to the excessive heat

While cooking bread in the oven with tthe temp. of 350 degrees, My oven door exploded. I heard a loud pop and glass shot out and shattered everywhere. I looked on the computer and noticed that this was a common problem with the Sears ranges. I called the local Sears and the manager told me I needed to call the Customer Solutions. I called them and they told me that there was no recall on the product so they could do nothing for me. I purchased the range September of 2010. The warranty just ran out about 3 weeks ago. I did not purchase a warranty because I believed in their product. I purchased this range to replace one that I had for 13 years. and we were changing the kitchen to stainless appliances. My old Kenmore range worked perfect when I sold it last year. Sears said it was not their problem. I am thankful that my children were not in the kitchen when this happened. Sears needs to recall this oven. On their website (Sears) under the same range (model #)someone posted the same problem (exploding glass) on June 26, 2011. This is a problem that needs to be addressed and I should NOT have to pay to fix the door. This is a hazard and should be recalled. This range is defected. I am concerned that when the glass is replaced this will happen again. Customer Relations told me that they could do nothing about the problem even if it happened again and YES he thought it needed to be recalled too.

While using the oven at 325 degrees or any setting, after approximately 10 minutes the broiler turned on without physically enabling the switch for broil. It was impossible to tum the broiler off using the stove controls -the circuit breaker at the building fuse box had to be switched to the off position. \\’hen range is not in use, the circuit breaker is in off position. When turning circuit breaker on, broiler comes back on and won’t tum off. Setting oven to pre-heat sometimes defeats the broiler -only to have it start on its own again.

On 10/31/2011 after powering the circuit breaker in the on position the broiler switched in the on position without being switched on. While doing some research online he noticed that the there was a recall (see Release # 09-333) where one of the hazards were the element would fail to turn off after being switched off. He has not contacted the firm but indicates that he will contact them to see if any repairs could be made.

The consumer states that his electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but that the CPSC should pursue an investigation on his model and serial number, because his range poses problems similar to the ones on recall.

On 10/17/2011, around 2:30 AM, a strong plastic odor and smoke woke up the consumer. The consumer went to the kitchen and noticed that the smoke was coming from the back of his range. The consumer turned off the power from the circuit breaker and then he unplugged his range from the electrical outlet.

The consumer stated that he pulled out his range and inspected the back of it and found that the control panel and clock were melted.

The consumer feels that the range presents a fire hazard.

On 10/18/2011, the consumer called and explained incident to mfr’s rep. (name unknown), who said that the product is no longer under warranty. Nothing else was offered by the mfr’s rep.

The consumer noted that this is the first time that he has had an issue with this range and it has not been serviced since he has owned it.

We were baking apple pies. Our 5-year old Kenmore oven (model # 790.94212409) was set at 350F. The first two pies came out perfect. We put the next two in the oven and left the kitchen to watch TV. 15 minutes later, the pies were on fire. The digital clock on the oven was showing an error code of F10. We were able to shut off the oven and prevent the house from burning down.

We called Sears but their repair guy couldn’t come until 1.5 week later so we found a local to try to figure out what was happening. He told us that the control board of the oven had a short circuit that was kicking the self cleaning mode every time we turned the oven on. He took of the control board as he mentioned that sometimes he’s seen it start by itself even without human intervention.

We researched the web and realized that this happens often. See http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/kenmore-electric-range-c3796.html and other websites are available with similar types of horror stories.

This is a major fire hazard and will now have to get a new range because I’m not trusting that replacing the control board with another one from Sears will fix the issue.

Front left burner issues: won’t turn on except at highest heat settings, then won’t turn off even when knob is turned to the OFF position. Front right burner issues: cannot control temperature. Temperature is often much hotter than selected knob setting. Will boil water even on “Lo” setting.

This began several months ago and has only gotten worse. The issues described above were at first just a nuisance, but now occur almost every time I use the range.

The first time the front right burner would not turn off, it almost started a fire in my kitchen. I now know to just not use this burner. Instead I know I can only use the front right burner on the lowest setting, which is ridiculous.

I have a 4 year old Kenmore 790.9611340A Range and the burner won’t turn off. This is the second time this has happened in the last 2 months. The first time we were able to get it to turn off by jiggling the switch. We have used the stove many times since but now the eye won’t turn off and we need to switch the circuit breaker to get it to turn off. The condition is identical to Recall #09-333. I have found numerous other cases of this model experiencing this condition online and believe my model should be added to the recall. I have talked to Sears Customer solutions and residential customer care and they are not willing to fix the issue because it is not on the recall list.

Had my wife not noticed the range glowing this could have burned our house down or easily burned her or one of my kids.

I have a three year old Kenmore smooth top range that has been malfunctioning. One of the burners won’t turn off and sometimes randomly turns on and heats up. Even if the knob is in the off position the burner will continue to heat up and may just come on at any time. There was a large recall for this problem through Kenmore and Frigidaire, but my model is not on the list. From the complaints online, this problem is much bigger than just the models they have listed. Now I am stuck either paying a repair bill that will be about a third the price of just getting a new one, or just getting a new one (not a Kenmore!).

I own a Kenmore oven. The model number is 790.92412102.

While cooking a turkey (at 325 degrees) the other night, the bake element heated out of control. It did not turn off when we tried to use the control buttons, and we had to turn off the breaker in order to force the oven to cool down.

This is the third time that I have experienced this problem with this oven. I feel fortunate that I have been standing in the kitchen each time that it has occurred and that I noticed the problem before my oven went up in flames. The other times that the problem occurred, I “fixed” it by unscrewing the back cover, unplugging the wire from the “bake” control, plugging in the oven, unplugging the oven, reattaching the wire, then replugging in the oven. The oven then made a little buzzing noise (like something electronic re-setting itself) and worked properly for some time (probably about a year). This time, I have been unable to induce the oven to “reset” itself, and have therefore been obliged to leave the wire unplugged from the control, as the bake element begins to heat up of its own accord every time I plug it back in.

The first time this occurred, I checked online and found dozens of complaints about the same issue. This time (about two years later) I found even more. It doesn’t seem to me that this is an isolated issue. This is a serious danger. I have 5 children ages 12 and under. When the oven decides to overheat like this, the exterior of the unit is always very hot by the time I’ve noticed what is going on (much hotter than it gets during normal usage). One of my children could EASILY burn themselves on the exterior of the overheated oven. The items inside the oven have burned every time it goes out of control like this. This time, the turkey bag enclosing the turkey breast melted and burned onto the pan, releasing VILE fumes into our house. We aired the house as best we could, but it still STANK to high heaven all night long. I believe I’m going to have to dispose of the pan, too, because I can’t get the burned on turkey bag to come off, even with the flat edge of a razor.

This is a manufacturer problem with the oven unit. It is not an isolated issue. The company should take some responsibility in correcting this problem.

Caller took the Apple Crisp out of the oven, tried to turn the oven off but couldn’t turn it off. The oven heat continued escalating as the caller tried to turn the broiler off so he unplugged the range. He plugged the range back in until after it cooled down, plugged it back in and the broiler came back on automatically. He then plugged it in this morning 10/21/2011 with the same result.

Caller would like the public to be made aware of the fire hazard/danger for this particular model, said the broiler becomes so hot that the backslash & burners next to it may catch on fire if left too long.

We turned our oven on to bake at 400f. The broiler came on during baking, overheated the oven and burned our dinner. We attempted to turn off the broiler by turning the oven off and we tried turning the broiler on & off, but nothing would turn it off. The only remedy was to unplug the oven entirely.

When the oven was plugged back in, the broiler immediately came back on and could not be turned off.

This oven is equipped with a delay start to allow users to begin cooking at a specified time. Had we used this feature the oven could have ignited, causing a fire. Fortunately, we were monitoring the oven when this happened and we were able to get the oven unplugged before a fire erupted.

The motherboard controller for the oven had to be replaced to fix the problem.

This is the second time this oven has had the exact same problem in our home. We replaced the motherboard in 2010 and again just this week (Oct 2011). In researching the issue, we see that this model has numerous complaints from other owners with the exact same problem.

    Runaway / Uncontrollable Oven

    I purchased a Kenmore Oven from Sears - Model # 790.92419102 Serial # VF23607376

The electronic control failed and the oven ran at maximum heat and COULD NOT BE SHUT OFF. The only way to stop this dangerous condition was to disconnect the power supply.

Any reasonable person would expect a failure to result in non-operation of the device; NOT an uncontrollable fire hazard.

Contact with officials from both Sears and Kenmore was made with no concern on their part. An Internet search search shows this has happened to numerous other consumers as well.

Our Kenmore Smoothtop Range started spontaneously turning on the back left burner, but the switch shows off. Cannot “turn off” burner once this happens without flipping breaker to the range, or unplugging the range. This has happened 4 times in the past 4 weeks. This is a fire hazard as well as a personal burn hazard.

This started a month ago, and has occurred 3 times since the original time. The date of incident below was for the most recent occurrance. I contacted Kenmore, but they say there is no recall on this stove, as there is for other models built the same year that have experienced the same problem.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Surface Electric Range

Consumer stated that her electric range is a fire hazard. The consumer stated that she looked at the electric dials of the range, and at the dials of the digital display appear to show that the range is off. However, the front left burner is still on and very hot, the consumer states that the control panel does not indicate that the surface is hot. However, sometimes the control panel will indicate that the surface is hot. The consumer stated the burner will not turn on spontaneously. The consumer stated that this problem happened about 6 months ago and has continued to happen about 6 times. The consumer had to go in the garage of her home and turn off the circuit breaker. The consumer didn’t hear a crackling noise from the product or smell any type of burning.

The consumer has the range burner set to medium to medium high normally. Two years ago, the consumer found that the front right burner would remain on after the consumer would shut off the range at the dials. The consumer called the retailer immediately after the incident happened. The consumer was informed that she had to pay at her expense to have the product serviced. The consumer’s husband decided to fix the range himself and that particular burner has not had any problems since. The consumer did not call the firm about the right front burner. The consumer has a smooth top surface electric range.

The consumer did call Sears, where they purchased it, and they said there was nothing they could do. They also called Kenmore and were told the same thing. The consumer called the firm’s recall hotline in release 09-333 today and was informed that her product was not on recall and was given the number to the CPSC. The consumer was informed by the CPSC that there was no recall currently for his range.

The consumer found similar models in release 09-333 that have the same hazard as her range. The consumer has not continued to use the stove or the effected burner at all. The product appeared to show no signs of damage. The product has not damaged the consumer’s home. The consumer stated that no one has been hurt. The consumer did not call the fire department after the incidents.

Back left burner comes on by itself. Buttons to turn off burner are unresponsive and display on panel doesn’t show the burner as being on at all when this happens. Fortunately there were no flammable items on top of the range when this happened and we were actually home to see it and turn off the power to the range. Currently have power off to the range when not in use. I have used the range since then and when the power is turned on to the range the burner will come on for maybe 30 seconds then go off. It will continually repeat this process. As stated above there is no indication on the display that the burner is on.

Have been in contact with Sears and they state that there is no recall on this range and that I would be charged to repair what I consider a defective product and a fire hazzard. Will be contacting Fridgidaire (the manufacturer) to see what they will do. There are many other ranges by the same manufacturer that have been recalled for the same problem.

I have made a video recording of the defective range with this condition happening.

I own a Kenmore smooth top range which in my house when I bought it August 2010. The Model # is 790.96002601 and the Serial # is VF71831158. The left front burner will remain on after being turned to OFF. It also will come on to a low setting and even a very high RED setting ALL by itself. I have to turn the stove off at the circuit breaker panel to ensure it doesn’t come on by itself and burn the house down.

I understand that this particular model and serial number is not in the recall. How am I supposed to pay for something that is very expensive to repair? It apparently is happening all over the United States according to the information I found when googling “Kenmore range top turns on by itself” This is the manufacturers fault. It didn’t just happened to me.... many many many people have these KENMORE stovetops (and the ovens are cutting on by themselves too!!!!) that are cutting on by themselves and they are NOT in the recall! I am a single mom with limited employment now and two kids to support. I shouldn’t have to pay for this stove when it is not my fault. Read the below incerp from a website that I visited re: getting SEARS to accept responsibility and repair the product....

“When I saw the recall in Consumer Reports magazine, I immediately called Sears and was informed that this model was not on the recall list, but the operator did tell me she had received many phone calls exactly like mine from people experiencing the same problems whose stoves were not on the list. She suggested I report the problem to the C.P.S.C. which I did. The C.P.S.C. sent me a letter confirming the information and suggested I contact the manufacturer. I contacted Frigidaire/Electrolux via e-mail and was told by them that they could not help me and I needed to contact Sears Customer Care as that was the place of purchase. After an e-mail to Sears, I got a phone call from a customer care representative who said that Sears was willing to pay me back the $65.00 service fee if I would pay parts and labour for a technician to come .....”

This lady’s problem never got solved..... Why would you trust that an effective repair would be made with this type of problem occurring? Why chance burning up your family or house in the middle of the night?

There needs to be a recall on ALL of the KENMORE electric range top products experiencing these issues! SEARS should stand by their products! They should give full coverage for REPLACEMENT. Please help us to get our stoves replaced! Thank you, [REDACTED]

Therefore our oven temperature kept rising and rising for 10 hours while we were in and out of the house. Finally we noticed that the stove was very hot and realized that it was still running despite being turned off 10 hrs ago. We pulled the stove away from the wall and unplugged it. This was an extremely dangerous situatuion for my husband, myself and my 3 young children. In researching this on the internet, I can see that we are not alone in having this situation happen. When you turn something off you expect it to be off. Something must be done with this brand of oven.

Our Kenmore stove Model 790.96612409 S/N VF63214170 failed in a hazardous state. The following was written by my wife whom was apparently shocked by the stove. “I was making BBQ meatballs on the stove, using the burning with the simmer select feature. The pot was boiling, I turned down the heat, then pushed the simmer select button. When I pushed the button, there was a loud popping sound and a white flash . The burner was still functional, the clock was still on. About five minutes later I was putting a pot of water on the back right burner to make rice. I had my hand on the handle of the pot and turned the burner on. There was a loud popping sound, an orange flash, and the muscles in my left arm contracted. An orange flash appeared to be coming from the area of the knob I was turning.

The display panel was still on after the 2nd incident, and as far as I could tell, the simmer select burner was still working.” My daughter and I also both heard the arc and saw the first arc flash from about 10’ away with our backs to the stove. Before the stove was disconnected I confirmed continuity from a copper water pipe to the stove chassis. The stove was wired with separate nuetral and ground wires. The stove has since been removed from the house and is being stored in a pole shed in case somebody would like to look into what is wrong with it. It is now 2 days after my wife was shocked, the pain in her arm has now subsided, but she is still having spasms in one finger which may be related to the shock.

In November 2005 I purchased a Kenmore Range Model 790.96213. In September 2011, I heated up my oven and went to open the door and the entire handle fell off and the stainless panel and glass fell down on me. I called Sears and talked with the initial customer service representative, then recall, and finally customer resolutions. All informed me that since my range was out of warranty that they could not do anything. I did a lot of research on the internet and found that others have experienced the same problem. Most said that the screws were too short. I measured the original screws in the oven door, which was 1 ¾” compared to 1 ½” door thickness. This left ¼” of the screw to attach to a plastic handle. Consequently, with only ¼” holding a handle on a door with a fairly heavy spring, the handle had a very high probability of coming off. My subsequent research showed that Sears recognized this problem and put longer screws on the later model ranges, hence, a manufacturer’s defect.

The Recall Department implied that this was not a safety issue and there had been no recall. I personally do not see it that way as the panel could have dropped on a child and did burn one person (found on the internet). Had I been holding the door partway down, as I do many times, with my arm in the oven, I could have been severely burned from the door snapping back up on my arm. I was lucky that I was just opening the door when the handle came off.

09/26/2011 caller was baking at 400 degrees for 45 minutes per instructions on pre-prepared food item purchased at Cosco.

Caller went away from the range, was on computer but when he came back to the range to check on food he saw odd symbols on the display area.

Caller said the 45 minutes was over so he tried to turn range off, however it didn’t go off so he tried a few more times with the same result.

He opened the oven which was so very, very hot.

He went to the circuit breaker, turned it off. Food was not burned but thermometer measured temperature at 125 degrees when it was supposed to be 140 degrees.

The next morning (09/27/2011) he turned breaker back on, turned oven on, let it heat up to 350 degrees, tried to turn it off but again it wouldn’t go off again so he turned breaker off, allowed range to cool off then turned breaker on again to test range again to attempt to turn it off, however when he returned to the range it had turned itself on and was already heating up.

Caller believes this to be an extreme loss of control, dangerous situation and therefore wanted Caller has contacted repair & has an appointment for repair 10/08/2011

Kenmore Smooth Top Range, model: 790.96021405 & S/N: VF64041358, burner will stay on high and not turn off creating a safety hazard. This has happened numerous times and the last time I had to switch off the power. There is a recall for this issue on an earlier serial number but Kenmore won’t include this unit although clearly the same issue.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range

Consumer stated that his electric oven range combo is a fire hazard. The consumer stated that he looked at the electric dials of the range, and at the dials of the digital display appear to show that the range is off. However, the front left burner is still on and very hot, the consumer states that the control panel does indicate that the surface is hot. The consumer stated that this problem happened about 6 months ago and has continued. The consumer had to go downstairs to power off the circuit breaker to shut off the breaker.

The consumer plugged in the circuit breaker again and the range front burner did not turn right back on its own. The consumer’s wife was using the range to cook pasta and found that the burner would not shut off 3 minutes after she powered it off. The range was set to 3/4 heat capacity. The consumer was not using the oven at the time of the incident. The consumer has a smooth top surface. The consumer called the firm today after doing some independent online research and they stated that the product was not on recall.

The firm gave him the number to the CPSC. The consumer has yet to call the retailer. The consumer was informed by the CPSC that there was no recall currently for his range. The consumer found similar models in release 09-333 that have the same hazard as his range. The product is an oven range combo and has not experienced any issues with the oven.

The consumer has continued to use the stove but has not used the effected burner. The consumer tried to use the left front burner and it still would not respond to a shut off. The product appeared to show no signs of damage. The product has not damaged the consumer’s home. The consumer stated that no one has been hurt. The consumer did not call the fire department after the incident.

The consumer reported that she was cooking sauce on the front-left burner while using the “simmer select” option for approximately one hour when she hurd a “pop” sound and saw a blue flash come from the range. She did know where on the range the blue flash came from since she was not looking directly at it. The consumer immediately shut off the unit.

A short time later she turned on the right front burner to see if it was still working and she heard another “pop” and the digital screen on the back of the unit went black. The consumer also reported the smell of something electrical burning. The complainant stated the circuit breaker to the unit tripped after the other burner was attempted to be turned on. There were no injuries and no smoke alarm sounded.

The consumer previously had an incident which was investigated under [REDACTED] for the same range which involved the same front left burner heating up after it was shut off and causing the cooking surface to break. The front left burner and a circuit board in the back of the unit were replaced by the manufacturer after the first incident. The manufacturer told her those repairs were only guaranteed for 90 days and the unit was no longer under warrenty when the 2nd incident occurred. She has already gotten rid of the unit and purchased a new one since she did not believe the incident unit to be safe, even if it was repaired.

I went back into the kitchen to look at the stove burners to make sure nothing had boiled over. When I noticed it hadn’t, I opened the oven door and the oven was still on. It was beginning to smoke. I tried pressing the power button 2 or 3 more times, but it didn’t turn off. I had to unplug my stove.

I purchased a new home in Feb 2008. All of the Kenmore appliances were installed by the builder. This morning, I was about to make breakfast, while using my pan on the stove, the left front burner, heated up (Quickly) to the absolute highest setting (while I only had it on the low setting) I tried desperatedly to turn down and off the burner, it only got hotter! started to smoke, we pulled out the oven and unplugged it! It was a frightening experience and I shudder to think what may have happened had I left the room for a moment, while my pancakes cooked! Luckily I was standing at the stove and saw it happen...

I see (now) that there is a recall on Kenmore glass top stoves, however when I called Kenmore, I was told this particular model was NOT part of the recall! WHAT? My stove has the same issues as the recalls and it’s not on the list?????

Kenmore electric glass top range /oven model 79097423901. Purchased April 2010 from Sears. Turned oven on to heat to 350 degrees. Oven was still in process of rising in temperature to 350 when I heard a popping sound followed by a shattering sound hitting the floor. Walked in to find outside glass panel on oven door shattered into a million pieces, mostly on the ground and shot out from the oven. Some sections remained in the door frame, looking like they had been pushed from the inside out. Nothing hit the door, the door was not hot; it seemed to just spontaneously explode. Sears technical service said they’ve never heard of this and there are no recalls. When I searched online, I found hundreds of reports of the same type incidents with Kenmore and [REDACTED] (I believe my model is actually made for Kenmore by [REDACTED]). Sears will not repair, not investigate, nor do anything with this issue.

We purchased a Kenmore Electric Range(Model # 790.9422340C, Serial # Vf73781985 ) in October 16th, 2007 at Sears in Fresno, California. The range is not a smooth top so it is not part of the recall for smooth tops, but it is a fire hazard just like the smooth tops because one particular burner(right rear back)burns at a high temperature even though it is set to a lower temperature. Several times what I was cooking burned or cooked too fast until I noticed the bright red burner. I believe that the first time this happened I just turned it off and the next time the burner was okay. I believe this must have happened about a year after we purchased the stove, because we didn’t call Sears thinking that it would no longer be under warranty. The burner kept doing this on and off to this day and eventually I started avoiding using this burner. I just lived with the situation until I read that the the Sears electric smooth tops were being recalled because they were a fire hazard. When I read what the smooth top range was doing, it was the same problem as our stove. We checked the recall list hoping that our range was there, but no luck. I called the CPSC line to check if they knew if our range was also being recalled and they said no. When I talked to Sears, they told me that we would have to pay for repairs or purchase a maintenance agreement. This smacks of blackmail to me. I feel Sears should be the one putting pressure on their manufacturer to make sure that their products are safe, and it should be forced to remedy all ranges that show the fire hazard problem.

Would not shut off even though displays were off. Only way to shut off was to unplug the range. Serious risk of fire/hazard and could easily gone unnoticed because there was nothing on to indicate that the oven continued to heat. I was very fortunate to have discovered the problem before it was too late. It was after midnight and I happened to go down to the kitchen for some water when I felt extreme heat as I stood next to the range.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range purchased in Canada in 2009.

In 2009 I purchased a Kenmore Electric Range. On September 16th, 2011the exterior glass on the range door spontaneously exploded while making dinner. It shot out several feet. Luckily, no one was hurt. I called Sears and they did not seem to be in any rush to send over a tech. Meanwhile, there is still broken glass dangling from my stove door.

I’m not sure if these incidences are related but within a few months of having the stove I called Sears to complain that when the oven self-cleaned it seemed way too hot. In fact, it peeled the laminate end of my countertop and was extremely hot to touch anywhere on the stove. In fact, it radiated heat in such a way I was afraid it was going to burn my wall. Sears sent over a technician and said it was fine. Despite this I have always contended the stove is too hot and haven’t used the self cleaning option since. A few days ago, prior to the door exploding, the oven caught fire while making a desert. There was a small amount of drippings caught in a sheet of tinfoil but the stove literally ignited in flames. We had to use a fire extinguisher to kill the flame. Thankfully, I was in the kitchen and we were able to put it out fairly quickly without the kitchen catching fire.

What concerns me, is the lack of concern Sears has over this. I found a consumer complaint site online where several people complain of the same incident happening to them and Sears not willing to pay for repairs or better yet, recall the stoves. I was told Sears Canada would not pay for the service call but fortunately my local Sears store has. However, they are not willing to pay for repair.

This really concerns me and upsets me Sears seems to be so lax in all this...

I looked for a recall on the internet and found none, But I did find alot of people having the same problems(complaintsboard.com)....I think something needs to be done before someones house burns down, or someone get hurt. The product, in the report: Kenmore range with 4 burners flat top and an oven.

I have a Kenmore range that has issues: - the front large burner turns on by itself on high randomly - the front large burner often does not turn off - when I try to turn off the front burner, I sometimes see a spark at the back of the range - the front large burner cannot go on low, it is high or nothing

We have to continually turn off the breaker for the range when it isn’t in use.

I was baking pork chops in my Kenmore electric range model # 79095922301 at 400 degrees when after about 1/2 hour i heard a loud snap and pop from the kitchen as i was watching the tv in the living room.I went into the kitchen to see smoke then flames coming from the controller on the top of the range! I grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out then pulled the range away from the wall and ran downstairs and shut off the circuit breaker.I then opened the windows and door to help clear the smoke from the kitchen! The house smelled like burnt electronics and you can see the black flame marks on the top back of the range!

This is a smooth top range. The right front burner can accommodate pans/pots for different sizes - there are three settings for pan size.

Yesterday was the second time the burner (set on the largest size) did not turn off. Two of the three rings were on. The dial showed HE meaning the burner was hot but off. The only way I have found to turn the burner off is to turn it on and then turn on the three burners and select a heat setting.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Warm & Ready Range / Self-Cleaning Oven. Free standing, smooth top, 4 burners, one oven compartment, warming drawer. Color is white. All elements are electric.

My wife had placed two trays of pasta in the oven so it could bake while we were at church so that it would be ready as soon as we got home. She set the temperature for 350 degrees. Everything seemed fine / normal, so we left. This was at about 4:45pm. When we arrived back to our house around 5:50pm, we opened the door and immediately heard at least 2 of our smoke alarms beeping. The house was filled with smoke. We went in and found smoke pouring from the oven with fault code “F1” displayed on the screen. Pressing the off button did not turn the oven off. The surfaces of the oven were incredibly hot, so much so that we could not move the oven to unplug it. I went down to the breaker box in the basement and shut the power off that way. Once it had cooled down, we inspected it. The inside is probably permanently damaged (scorched everywhere). The baking sheet’s silcone grips were burnt to the point they turned into power. You can’t even see through the door’s glass anymore. We turned the power back on once it had cooled off, and it seemed like it was working normally again. However, we have now shut the power off at the breaker and will likely replace the oven completely as we simply do not trust it anymore. This is extremely dangerous; it could have easily started a fire in the house if we had been much later getting home. I have seen many complaints on the internet about this problem, and I find it amazing that there has not been a recall issued. This was scary and extremely dangerous. No oven should be allowed to heat out of control. There needs to be a fail-safe type of control to shut down power immediately if the oven starts to overheat.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Ultrabake Electric Range

While cooking chicken in our Kenmore Electric Range, Model # 665.95829003, the oven started getting EXTREMELY hot. The chicken was smouldering and I removed it--but the oven was so hot I needed full-hand mitts to retrieve the chicken. I turned off the oven, but the top broiler elements remained on. The oven was glowing orange and continued heating unchecked until I shut off the circuit breaker. The display stated “F-1 F-3.” If we had not been inside (the oven was only set to bake, not broil--and 350 degrees) the oven could have caught the house on fire.

Appearantly, we are not the only ones this has happened to. Upon a Google search of the problem I found many like stories online at this website:

    http://www.mysears.com/Appliances/topics/My-oven-won-t-turn-off-/posts?page=7

It seems that a relay in the oven fuses, causing the broiler to remain on with no thermostatic control until the power is cut.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric stove

I am writing to inform you about a serious safety problem. On September 3, 2011 my wife put some food in our oven to warm it up. While working in the kitchen she happened to look at the oven and notice light coming out of it. She opened the oven door to discover the bottom heating element glowing white hot and sending out sparks. She immediately turned off the oven and removed the food from the oven. Even with the power turned off to the oven the element continued to glow white-hot and send out sparks like a Fourth of July sparkler. I grabbed our fire extinguisher, which is rated for electrical fires, and sprayed the burning element. I emptied the entire extinguisher and it made no difference – the element continued to burn and send out sparks. Since the fire was burning along the element I grabbed a cutter and cut the element. When the fire reached the end of the cut it then stopped burning.

The stove is a Sears Kenmore Model # 911-95582990 about eleven years old. The serial number is 9T1-2486420.

This incident is of concern because we could have put food in the oven to cook and not been watching the oven and a fire could have been produced that may have resulted in major damage or even loss of life. We do not know how common this problem is but if there have been other incidents we believe there should be a recall/replacement of the oven heating elements for these models of Kenmore electric stoves.

I have attached photos of the stove. The white material you see is from the fire extinguisher.

Please assist us in informing the proper persons about this potentially serious problem.

    Thank you for your assistance,

Kenmore Ultra Bake Super Capacity Electric Glass Top Range. While cooking a pork loin I walked into the kitchen and saw an error code on the electronic display. The bake element had shut off but the broiling element was raging. I left the door open and did a quick error code search. Most suggested replacing the control board. 20 minutes later the broiler was still on so I flipped off the breaker. Once cool I flipped it back on and same thing. More research showed me this is a recurring proplem with many similar units but different serial numbers. I haven’t been able to find a recall notice. I thank God I was home and cooking when it happened because several other people have mentioned not even using the range and realizing the broiler was raging. My model number is 95792000 and serial number is RK0811206.

I purchased a Kenmore Convection range from sears in Feb 2009 for $1,000. About a month ago when trying to make dinner I couldn’t get the oven temperature to heat up to 300 degrees. Today a repairman came out and found the clock assembly wires had melted and fried. After the last time I used the oven, we noticed what we thought smelled like burning rubber, but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. A new clock assembly will cost us $200. I’ve been battling with Sears but getting nowhere.

Consumer stated that his electric oven range combo is a fire hazard. The consumer stated that he powers off the range at the dials and the digital displays appear that the range is off. However, the burner is still on and very hot. The consumer was in his kitchen in the middle of the night and found that the burner was on even though the range was powered off. The consumer stated that the range will turn itself off usually after 7-10 minutes. This the left back burner. The consumer attempted to turn it off but it would not comply with the digital command made by the consumer. The range is a smooth top.

The consumer called the firm about this issue today. The would not offer assistance except send out a repairman at the consumer’s expense. The consumer was informed that there was no recall for it.The product is an oven range combo and has not experienced any issues with the oven. The consumer unplugged the unit last night to avoid anymore occurrences. The consumer was told by his wife that she found the range was on even though the range was off.

The consumer’s wife dismissed it as an accident. The consumer has not plugged the breaker in since. The product appeared to show no signs of damage. The retailer and firm is one and the same. The product has not damaged the consumer’s home. The consumer stated that no one has been hurt. The consumer did not call the fire department after the incident.
