The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth-top electric kitchen stove
[REDACTED] Kenmore smooth-top stove Model # 790.96122400 Serial # VF71312364
My wife and I purchased a Kenmore stove on 02-18-07 as part of a kitchen remodeling project. It was delivered on 03-16-07. It worked adequately until last week, when my wife noticed that the right rear burner was coming on by itself [control knob was off]. After it happened a few times, we started turning the circuit breaker off in the basement, after using the stove each time. It is very inconvenient, but we could not take the chance that the stove would come on during the night or when we were out of the house.
I googled the stove problem and discovered that Sears and CPSC have an active recall concerning this problem. But, our stove’s model and serial number are not included in the recall list. When I contacted Sears, they confirmed that our stove is not part of the recall. But, when I described the problem, they believed that it should be. They said they would pass the data along to CPSC and suggested that I initiate a CPSC report.
I initiated a report 2 days ago, but it got lost on the CPSC website [20110829-D60C2-2147475838]. I spoke to several people at CPSC, and they could not locate it. So, here is another one.
I believe that the problem with our stove is identical with the ones identified in the recall. I also believe that our model and/or serial number should be added to the recall list. We have just been lucky that the problem did not surface before now.
We are quite anxious to get this problem fixed as soon as possible for a variety of reasons - safety, wasted money on electricity, inconvenience, etc. Your efforts to resolve this issue as expeditiously as possible, would be appreciated.
Gratefully yours, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore self-cleaning electric range, white, smooth cook top, radiant, free standing
I preheated my Kenmore range as usual, put in a cake and shortly ( about 5 minutes) began hearing it sizzle. Looked in and it was starting to burn because the top element was on. It normally is not on during bake. Thinking I had hit broil by mistake, I turned it off and on again to bake. When I opened it again, the top element was again heating, so I turned it completely off, but the burner kept heating! I could not reach the plug, so I turned off the breaker. A couple of hours later, when we turned the breaker back on, the stove element began to heat again even though the stove had not been turned on. I read online of the same thing happening to others with Kenmore stoves. As long as this stove is plugged in, the element will continue to heat without ever going off.

The product, in the report: Electric Self-Cleaning Radiant Glass-Top Ultra Bake Range
After using the range for dinner and turning it off i noticed a smell of smoke in the house, so I checked the range and the display indicated that is was off. Later the smell got much worse andthis time I actually opened the oven door even though it indicated that it was off and I noticed the broiler elment red hot and the oven very hot. I attemted to turn it off by pressing the oven button and on and then off and the broiler button on then off but it would not go off. I turned the breaker off to the unit. About an hour later and also the next day I cycle the breaker and even though the range display showed it being off the broiler came on.
From a suggestion of a friend, I seached this site for a recall but none was found on this unit, however, there were multiple reports of the same or similar units with the same problem. The following Incident numbers are from my search: 20110707-3571D-1190453, 20110708-596F0-2147477416, 20110709-70C32-2147477388, 20110510-F4A4E-2147479305, and 20110427-8582D-2147479723. From my reseach these are all in the same model group and the model prefix of 665 indicates they were made by Whirlpool.
I have been in touch with the Sears Kenmore Executive Customer Relations department and they are still in the process of reviewing my complaint. It’s my opinion that the problem is due to a defective manufacturing process of the control circuit board and repairing the product with a replacement board does not solve the problem of this being a dangerously defective device. The product should be recalled and if an upgraded circuit board is not manufactured the the manufacturer and retailer need to compensate the product owners for the balance of the reasonable product lifespan.

The product, in the report: Kenmore, Model #: 790.96009600, from approx. 2006, black, serial #: VF640037994 Electric smoothtop range
I have a Kenmore smoothtop range from approx. 2006, with model number 790.96009600. At the end of May, the front left burner would not turn off after having been used for cooking. A repairman from Sears came and replaced the infinite switch, and fixed it temporarily. I was out of town almost all summer and only used it twice between the repair (May 20th) and the day the same thing happened again (August 20th). The burner was only on for 3 minutes, and then would not turn off, so I cut power to it with the circuit breaker and unplugged it. A repairman from Sears came again and put in a new part, but could not find anything to explain why the infinite switch broke again so quickly with such minimal use. Since other Kenmore smoothtop ranges have been recalled, I thought I should report my concern. Thanks.

Kenmore electric glass cooktop range has coils that spontaneously convert to “hi” while cooking at lower temperatures. Off the four burners, we have experienced this repeatedly with the two high-power burners.

The product, in the report: Electric smooth top 4 burners range with oven
Consumer states that her electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but CPSC should pursue an investigation on her model and serial number, because his range poses the exact same problem as the one on recall.
Consumer stated that when she turned “on” the right front burner to low setting the temperature increase to the high setting by itself while the burner was set to the “low” setting.
Consumer said that at the beginning of June the issues started in one burner, but now all the burners suddenly rise the temperature without being switching on.
Consumer called and explained incident to mfr’s rep. (name unknown) who said that the product is not longer under warranty
No injury
Consumer feels that her electric range could pose a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
We were at home and smelled something burning. We discovered that the oven was on what appeared to be the broil setting and the display was showing the clock and nothing indicating that the oven was even on. The whole stove (Kenmore Model 665-92025101) was extremely hot we had to unplug it to prevent a fire. After it cooled it looked like it had been on the “clean” setting. No one had touched the unit and it had turned on by itself.

The product, in the report: Electric Built-In Wall Oven
Consumer stated that while she was asleep, she was awaken by an explosion, she went to the kitchen and discovered that the oven glass door had exploded and shattered glass peices all over the floor.
Consumer stated that there was no indcation that this incident would occur she had used the oven several hours before. 8/17/11 Consumer contacted the retail store and was advised that her model was not part of the recall and she should report it to the Agency. Consumer feels that this oven is a safety hazard and should be recalled.
Consumer added: I want to clarify that this model of wall oven has a glass front on the oven-the whole front of the oven door is glass--this is what exploded & broke--The inside glass on the oven (to keep the heat in, but to allow one to see what is baking is still intact. the amount of broken glass was a lot & if anyone had been anywhere near that oven when it broke they would have been embedded with very small, sharp pieces of glass. It seems very dangerous to me. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Electric range--5 burners -- smooth top
Consumer states that his electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but CPSC should pursue an investigation on his model and serial number, because his range poses the exact same problem as the one on recall.
Consumer stated that his electric range turned on spontaneously without being switched on (the left front burner).
Consumer called and explained incident to mfr’s rep. (name unknown) who said that the product is not longer under warranty. Mfr. refer consumer to CPSC.
Consumer feels that the range presents a fire hazard.

Kenmore electric range model #665.92002
This morning I was baking cookies when I heard two tiny beeps. As I walked over to the range, I saw smoke. Opening the oven, I discovered burnt cookies and parchment paper. I shut the oven off, brought the cookie tray outside to cool. I left the oven door open to cool. When I looked at the oven again, the broiler was beet red and glowing. I pressed the off button again just to be sure, and nothing. I finally had to pull the range out and pull the plug.
Thank God this happened in the morning, not in the evening when we would be upstairs sleeping. Who would ever expect their oven not to shut off? This is a tragedy in the making. Sears would not comment on the problem, only offering to send a technician out in a week at my expense.
Needless to say, I will never trust this range again, and will be purchasing another. Please check this out before a tragedy does occur.

The product, in the report: Kenmore glass top stove model 9580200, serial number RK3825522
I have a Kenmore electric class top range (MOD 655 95802000 SER RK3825522). I baked chicken like normal (bake @ 375) and when the timer went off (I had been in a different room) I went into my kitchen and noticed that it was extremely hot in there and my food smelled burned. Turns out - the display was beeping and blinking an error message, the broiler coils were on FULL blast, it go so hot that the white door is now yellow at the top and the glass top (NOT on) burned my hand. I hit “cancel” and the oven appeared to be off but the coils NEVER turned off. I had to flip the breaker to get it to turn off. After reading all the other complaints on this model, I know that if I turn the breaker back on the broiler will turn on by its self. IF the processor KNEW there was an error, why didn’t it turn it’s self off?!

We have a Kenmore Glass Cooktop, 790.9600.2600, stove and the front right burner would not turn off. It remained on high. We had to turn off the power to our house and then unplug the stove in order for it to turn off. We had to call to get someone to fix it. He stated that it was a fused switch. Here we are one year later and now the burner will not turn on. I am concerned for our safety if it decides to switch back on like the previous issue. This should not continue to be happening for product quality and safety reasons.

The product, in the report: smooth top range white with black cooktop right front has dual burner.
I purchased a Kenmore smooth top range from Sears in 2007. I had an incident where the one of the dual front burners wouldn’t work (the smaller one), this was about 2 and a half years after I purchased it. I had a repair man in my home for another appliance that I had purchesed that was a defect from (Kenmore) that Sears ultimatly replaced after I argued with them for a month and a half. Anyway I inquired about my range at that time and the repair man said “if its not under warranty I should use it until it dies because I only paid $499.99 for it , it would be more expensive to fix.” I don’t remember exactly on what date it happened but I noticed that the elements on my range seemed to heat up really hot, I thought it was me at first, but over time the problem has gotten worse just recently the elements on the range won’t shut off leaving us with no option but turn off the circuit breaker. I called Sears an they said “my model isn’t on the recall list, I can pay to have it repaired”, when I questioned the Sears rep. I said “I told him I have read a lot of consumer complaints about people having the same problem, I believe Sears knows the problem is very widespread and doesn’t want to admit they sold a defected product,” instead they want the consumer to “foot the bill”. I think Sears has really dissapointed a lot of it’s customers and they should “do the right thing” this is a serious fire hazard it has the potential to burn or kill a lot of people. The Sears rep. I spoke with on the phone told me “ranges don’t last forever” I personally don’t think four years is “forever” their answer to the problem is “don’t use it” I don’ see how anyone is standing up for the consumer on this issue. When I had my house built I could’t get an “occupancy permit” until the anti-tip bracket was installed, but it’s okay if the range burns my house down? I don’t know what elese I can do as a consumer.

*Turned on oven, within 2 minutes smoke and fire came from the back of CLOCK/TIMER 316418702. I had to shut off the breaker to shut down the oven. If I had not been home we would have lost the house. The code on the clock time was f-10 which stands for runaway temperature. I removed the back of the oven to find that the flexible printed circuit attached to the timer/clock unit had melted and the unit itself started to melt. I have searched the web and have read the troubling stories about this same control unit. This unit was the source of a recall in the Elite brand of sears ovens, Why not all ovens containg this control? What are you waiting for, people are being killed by this issue. How do you sleep at night?

Regarding Kenmore Electric Range, model # 790.96020405, serial # VF64667084, purchased on 12/13/2006 from Sears, Greece, New York. (3 problems) - since purchasing the range we have noticed that it takes a very long time for the oven to preheat, upwards of 15 to 20 minutes to get to 350* - approx. 13 mths. after purchasing it, the back left burner no longer worked. When the left rear burner is turned on, the endicator light comes on but the burner does not. - recently we have noticed that the front right burner has suddenly gone from low or medium temperature setting to high by itself, also when turning the knob up or down it started making like a grinding sound.....today, 07/23/2011, while using this burner it went to high by itself and would not shut off, after turning the knob up and down it finally shut off. Now it has been approx. an hour since it was used, the hot surface light is now on and the burner is hot, too hot to touch. * For the safety of myself and my family I have now unplugged the range. *

She says that she has never used the self cleaning feature before. The consumer contacted the retailer who offered to send out a service technician for a fee. The consumer says it may have been on self cleaning mode for about 2 hours. The consumer says the vent in the back of the stove was not venting well and caused puddles on the top of her stove due to poor condensation inside the oven. This occured while the product was under warranty so it got repaired. The consumer says also that when she first received the oven she hit the self cleaning feature by mistake, while she had food in the oven. She pressed off and it would not go off. She contacted the manufacturer who took her thru a process to get the self cleaning mode off. The consumer says that there should not be a self cleaning button next to the off button. The consumer is not happy that no one is willing to help her. She just got a new floor installed in her kitchen, as well as a new dishwasher and the browning of the oven door mars the newer look of the kitchen.

As a result it heated the glass and the pot I was trying to cook with until the pot actually melted. I was trying to simmer food. When I notice it was not heating properly I shut off the burner, as it cooled it cracked the glass.

my oven will not turn off and even worse the top broiling unit stays on and keeps getter hotter and hotter. The only way to turn the oven off is to turn off the breaker or unplug. I am lucky I know about our breaker box. My appliance is now unusable and I called Kenmore and they have had this issue with several other models and issued a recall except on my model. If it is the exact same issue it should be part of the recall.

My Kenmore electric range has a burner that on more than one occasion has not shut-off or when the temperature on the burner is turned down, the burner still remains hot on the high setting. Last evening the burner turned itself on by itself. Luckily I noticed this before I went to bed, the outcome may have caused a fire. There are several Kenmore electric ranges that have been recalled similar to my stove. My stove has not been recalled, but I believe it should. A burner that turns itself on is a danger, espcially with small children in my home.

The controls would not turn off the oven, and I had to turn off the power at the circuit breaker. If we hadn’t noticed the oven getting hot, it could have easily burnt something or possibly dammaged the rest of the oven. This product should have an overriding thermal cutout similar to a dryer, to shut off the oven if the control fails. Very dangerous product. When on vacation, the Kenmore electtic range turned on the broiler function and overheated. The unit stayed on and caused the internal racks to melt. Fortunately, we came home and found the unit on. We could not approach it as it was emitting extreme heat. All of the dials were off and there was no indication that the unit was on. We turned off circuit breaker to range. We cooled the unit down for 12 hours and then flipped the circuit breaker. The oven immediately turned on the broiler unit. All dials on the stove were off. In discussion with appliance repair man, he inidcated he felt it would not be wise to repair unit as the reason for the failure could be many..

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” Electric Range Model 790.9422240B
We have a Kenmore 30” Electric Range, Model 790.9422240B, S/N: VF73249031, that has a “Simmer Select” feature that reduces the heat to the left front high heat burner to allow simmering of delicate foods or sauces. This feature experienced two failures since ownership over the 3yr period due to electrical shortage or blowing of its fuse. The result is not only does it not work, but the burner will unpredictably experience a flare-up or increase in heat when set at a low or medium setting which results in the coil becoming “red-hot” and for food potentially burning when not intended or expecting. This is a potential fire hazard and risk for injury. Sears wants to charge as much as a new stove to fix the problem. We feel that there should be a recall on this stove because of this problem.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jul 8, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 23, 2011
The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric range
The consumer stated that the edge of her electric oven range stove has very sharp edged and no measures are taken to make the product safer. The product is located close to her sink and has to frequently come in close contact with the range. The consumer cut herself in her left leg while moving passed the product. The cut was 4 inches across the calf muscle. The consumer has a permanent scar on her leg. The consumer placed pressure on the cut at the time of the incident and did not get any stitches nor did she see a doctor. The consumer went to the doctor in October of 2010, sometime after the incident and was given a shot to ensure she did not have an infection. Consumer called the firm immediately after the incident happened. The firm gave her a claim number and sent a contracted company that came to her home in October and file a report about the range and the incident. The consumer gave the investigator pictures of the incident. The consumer has not heard anything from the company since then. The product is a self standing smooth top oven with an electric range.
Consumer contacted Sears, then Sears referred her to Electrolux, the manufacturer, and Electrolux referred her case to Crawford & Company. She had contacted Electrolux and Crawford & Company on several occasions for a response. As of August 19,2011 there has not been a resolution for the injury.
Consumer is very disappointed that the company did not replace the dangerous oven for a safer one. The edges around the oven range door are extremly sharp. She is very disturbed that she will have a permanent scar on her leg (work in a professional business envirorunent where I wear skirts and dresses) and the company does not appear to have any concerns of preventing future injuries. More importantly, this unsafe product should not have been released for consumers to purchase. Just recently, her son received a minor cut on his finger just by opening the oven door.
She believes there should be a recall on these types of Kerunore Oven Range. This is a serious matter, and Electrolux needs to be held accountable for it.

The fire was contained and remained inside the oven b/c we were at home and present when there was a popping noise and we smelled the electrical fire. We turned the breaker off and the fire ceased. However, black smoke billowed out of it for about 3 minutes. There was no damage to anything other than the range. It is worth noting that this is a lemon replacement from Sears and the first Kenmore Elite Electric Slide-in (a model No. 790.4670) that we had was tripping the breaker and burned the motherboard on the back of the range.

Kenmore electric range 790.96009600 back right burner would not shut off and stayed hot to the touch until we unplugged the appliance. When we plugged it back in the burner came on even though the knob was in the off position.
The reason I’m reporting it to the CPSC is because Kenmore is recalling a similar (but higher end) model for this very reason so I’m guessing this model should be included in the recall.

The product, in the report: Microwave/Wall Oven Combination
On evening of June 9, 2011 the outer glass of my Sears Kenmore oven door exploded violently. At the time, the oven was off and the door was partially open. Shattered glass particles were scattered up to 20 feet, and covered the entire kitchen floor. No one was in the direct line of the explosive force, but this could have been a potentially very dangerous incident if there had been a child present, or of someone had been facing the oven door at the time.
The appliance was a Kenmore Wall oven Model 790.47849403 Serial number NF54807281 The design of the tempered glass front and handle is flawed and potentially dangerous. I can explain why if you don’t already know. Short of a recall and redesign, there should at least be a WARNING included in the owners’ documentation to minimize the possibility of a dangerous accident.

Consumer states that his electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but CPSC should pursue an investigation on his model and serial number, because his range poses the exact same problem as the one on recall.
Consumer stated that her electric range turned on spontaneously without being switched on (the left front burner) and the temperature rise up without being switched
No injuries.
Consumer called and explained the incident to a manufacturer rep., (name unknown), who told consumer that they could send a service technician to her house but consumer would have to pay for service. Consumer did not accept the offer.

While closing the oven door there was a blue electrical arch that came out the top of the range. He is not sure exactly where the electrical arch came from whether the oven or the top element. He recalls the same incident happening at least twice before. On one occasion while a pot was placed on the burner he saw the same electrical arch.
The right rear burning light on the control panel indicates “caution hot surface” when the burner is in the off position. He powered the circuit breaker in the off position to prevent any further safety hazards with the unit. He has not contacted the firm but plans on doing so.
While doing some research online he came across a few different blog sites where consumers experienced the same hazard with similar models to his.

The product, in the report: Smooth top electric range with oven
The oven was powered in the on position on bake at 250 degrees for two hours while the consumer and his family left the home. After returning he noticed that the home was filled with smoke and an electrical burning odor in the home. While opening the oven door he noticed that the food that was placed inside of the oven was not burned but the heating element at the bottom of the oven was glowing bright red.
There was an error code E@ or F2 on the control panel. Unable to power the range in the off position by using the proper switch the circuit breaker had to be powered in the off position. He went to the retailer and spoke with the store manager (name unknown) and he was the provided with the retailers service number.
He contacted the service number and the representative that he spoke with recommended that he have a service technician come out to the home to take a look at it. He declined in having any repairs made to the unit in fear that the hazard would repeat itself and potential y pose as a fire hazard. He contacted the firm on 6/20/2011 and was advised that the there was no recall involving the model number and serial number of his unit.
The range was still in the off posiiton due to the circuit breaker being powered off. On 6/21/2011 he powered the circuit breaker back into the on position and the oven powered back into the on position without being switched in the on position. He powered the circuit breaker back in the on off position. On 6/22/2011 he powered the circuit breaker back into the on position and the range powered on at the highest setting. He quickly powered the circuit breaker back into the off position in which it still currently remains.

Oven set to bake at 425 as I have done many times. This time, burritos were set on fire because only top element came on and stayed on. Bake is supposed to turn on only bottom element. Unplugged reset clock and bake still only turns on top element which now will not turn off until I unplug unit. Seems like a dangerous fire hazard.

Some Kenmore ranges that look exactly like ours and were manufactured around July 2004 have been recalled for a grounding issue. We bought ours in August 2004. Our Model # is 911.9381230 .

The product, in the report: Kenmore range model 790.91072601 purchased new in 2008
This electric oven/range was purchased new and professionally installed by Sears in 2008, and had been operating normally prior to the incident. On May 25, 2011, the large rear burner on the electric range was on ‘high’, boiling a 2-quart pot (copper-clad stainless) of salted water (for pasta). No other elements were being used at the time of the incident. Suddenly, a bright white light flashed, a loud buzzing noise began, and sparks began to fly out from under the pot. The drip pan melted and eventually (approximately 30 seconds later) the element exploded, sending a piece of element approximately 1-1/2” long shooting out, as well as molten metal (presumably from the drip pan) which sprayed out and landed on the countertop approximately 16” from the burner. The molten metal was so hot that it burned holes into the countertop (formica) where it landed. I was unable to turn off the dial for the burner as it was directly above the sparking element. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and prepared to put out the fire. By the time I got the fire extinguisher, the noise and molten metal spray had stopped. The fire/sound/light ceased when a piece of the previously-mentioned element broke free. Once I saw that there was no fire, I ran outside and cut the power to the stove (which is on a dedicated circuit breaker).
If I had been touching the pot when the short occurred, I would have been electrocuted. If I had been standing over the stove when the short occurred, I would have been burned by the metal spray. In other words, this incident had the potential to cause severe injury or death.
I called Sears on May 26, 2011 to have a technician inspect the stove. They sent out a repair person on June 3, 2011. He wrote up the ticket as “element failed”, and ordered a new element, drip pan, and switch. The technician said he did not know the cause of the failure, and said sometimes elements “just do that”. He charged me $253.83 for the parts and labor, and said that Sears was not responsible for the damage/failure because the product was only under warranty for one year from the purchase date.
By replacing burned/molten parts, the technician is addressing the symptoms of the problem, but not the CAUSE. I am afraid to operate the appliance since the cause of the short was not identified. I am concerned that other consumers may have similar problems with this appliance.
I went on line to speak to a “Blue Crew” representative about this issue on June 3, 2011. I corresponded (via Instant Messenger) with a representative who said his name was [REDACTED]. I asked him if other consumers had experienced a similar product failure. He told me, “we do not keep record of the problems with the appliances”. I saved a transcript of our IM chat which I have not attached, but can supply later if you need it.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Oven, Model# 362.62781004. Color is white, no window in oven door. Manual dials for turning on oven and burners.
The on/off/temperature dial on our oven caught on fire today. We moved into the apartment 3 months ago and have been using the oven since. A few days ago, when I was turning the dial towards “broil” it began making a loud buzzing noise, so I quickly turned it away. Today, my husband was turning on the oven and it not only made the noise but also started smoking (black smoke with a sulfurous smell). He went to turn the dial to “off”, but the oven light continued to stay “on”, so we had to turn off the breaker to the range. Eventually, it stopped smoking and the smell dissipated. When the apartment maintenance man arrived, he told us this was common in this model of oven and that several units owned by the management company had already caught on fire like this. He told us that he just needed to replace the timer, however, this doesn’t seem quite right if other ovens (the same model) are also catching on fire and people are not able to turn off the oven, it’s dangerous! This product should really be recalled!

Sears Kenmore Electric Range Model 790 9661 four years old, cost $1,200. Immaculately clean oven, put on 475 degrees and hit bake button and immediately the control board went on fire, sparking and singeing wall behind it and the breaker caught it and shut it down. If breaker did not work the kitchen could have caught fire, I was nervous hitting the stop button because I thought I could get a shock. It is now costing me $130 for technician to come and say hello and he will tell me if part is defective or not and I do not have extended warranty because I bought a very expensive model and trusted it would last more than four years, my whirlpool lasted 25 years and was not broken just tired of looking at it. This is a very dangerous situation because it just did not spark I saw red flames inside box and wall is black. This should be replaced on all models free of charge all the way because it is a complete fire hazard.

The racks inside the oven are falling down causing hot food and liquids to spill. People could get badly burned because of this problem.
The size and shape of the racks has not changed. The sides of the oven appear to have warped causing the racks to no longer fit properly. The racks can fall down with little or no weight on them. This seems like a design defect that should be repaired at no charge by the manufacturer.

This electric range belongs to my parents. I am visiting them and trying to get to get this repaired so they do not get seriously injured. The racks have fallen on numerous occasions and my mother has been burned at least once.
I called Kenmore directly at [REDACTED] today. They told me that there would be a $129 flat labor fee to come and look at the range and give an estimate. If parts are needed then the cost of the parts would be extra. The Kenmore representative told me that they had not heard of this problem before. However, I found numerous posts online describing the same problem.
Here is a link to other people who are experiencing the same problem. http://www.mysears.com/Kenmore-Elite-30-amp-34-Slide-In-Electric-Range-4102-reviews/topics/my-oven-racks-are-suddenly-too-small-for-the-oven/posts
I initially made an appointment, with the Kenmore representative, to have a technician to come and check the range. But I decided to cancel the service technician visit because my parents should not have to pay to fix this problem. Kenmore should fix this problem for free since it appears to be a design defect.
When I asked how I could file a formal complaint about the product, the Kenmore representative told me I could call the Product Resolution Line at [REDACTED]. I did call this number. But they do not record product complaints. They only tell you if there is a recall on the product. I was told that there is not a recall on the product. The Product Resolution Line representative told me I could call the Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) at 1-800-638-2772 and file a complaint. However, when I called the CPSC number I get a busy signal.

I have a kenmore electric stove with a glass top. The front burner will not shut off. There is a recall on certain models but not mine. There are many complaints online about other Kenmore and Fridgidare models that the same problem but there is no recall. When the burner is turned on, it sticks on high and will not shut off. I had to disconnect the power to the stove so no one would get burned. This has happened in the past. Sears will not come good for the repair.

The product, in the report: My Kenmore smooth top range
My right front burner switch is going bad again on my Kenmore smooth top range model # 79096002601, serial # VF70744467. This is after I replaced it back in October of 2010. The switch only lasted about 7 months and tonight the burner would not turn off again! Had to replace it with an old switch that I replaced on the left front burner also back in October of 2010, that is still somewhat useable, although when using it later this evening, it did start having issues with not turning off again! I am worried that this is going to start a fire or injury if this range is not put on recall!

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric range
Directed to this site after doing a search on the “F1” error code which the oven flashed. I am overwhelmed with the vast amount of others sharing the same complaint. I hope it doesn’t take someone’s life having been lost due to this issue before something is done! Upon cooking dinner tonight and turning the oven off it suddenly began beeping and flashing “F1” several times. The oven element was glowing red, you could feel the temperature raising rapidly and it would not shut off. Only after turning the breaker off did the oven stop. When I reset the breaker, the oven element heated up again and I had to leave the breaker in the off position. I am afraid to turn the breaker backer on because I don’t know if it’s going to automatically turn back on immediately or if it could at any given time. If it were to turn on while no one was at home our house could catch fire. If this were to happen while we were asleep it could be potentially deadly. I consider this to be of an extreme fire & safety hazard to myself and family.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Range
Consumer wanted to report that the left front burner on his Kenmore Elite electric range turns on by itself. The product is a oven/ range combo unit. The range also has a smooth top surface. The issue is isolated to the range and the oven works fine. The oven was on for roughly two hours before the left front burner turned on by itself. The consumer had the product modified 6 months ago as he had the front right burner would not turn off in a similar incident. The consumer called the retailer about the issue today and was told that they could examine the range at a charge of $125 at the consumer’s expense. The consumer has yet to call the manufacturer about this product. The consumer stated that similar models from 2006 have had the exact same issue and were recalled. The product is not damaged and does not show signs of discoloration or charring. The consumer was not injured by the product and shows no signs of structural damage to his home. However, the consumer felt it was imperative to report this issue to the CPSC.

The product, in the report: Electric Stove
Callers had used their 2 yr old oven the evening of Thursday, May 19, 2011 to cook a pizza, had turned oven off, eaten and were cleaning up approximately an hour later when caller’s wife, while standing at the kitchen sink about 5 or 6 feet from stove heard a very loud noise and when she turned around saw that the outer glass of the oven door had exploded sending glass as far as 3 feet away from stove and as near as in the door and on the floor directly in front of oven. Caller notes that if his 7 month old grandchild had been in the kitchen or if his wife had been nearer to the oven/stove the outcome of no injuries may have been a completley different report. Callers would like this stove/oven investigated, recalled and replaced at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Electric range 4 burners/oven
Consumer feels that his electric range could pose a fire hazard
Consumer states that his electric smooth top range is not included in the recall CAP for NR#09-333 (August 27, 2009), but CPSC should pursue an investigation on his model and serial number, because his range poses the exact same problem as the one on recall.
The first sign that this stove is defective came about two years ago when it was just past its one year warranty period. At that time, the front right burner, when set to medium heat, would go all the way to high, burning whatever food was cooking. We lost several good meals this way. Shortly after that, the same burner began staying on high even after it was turned off. A few months later the front left burner started behaving in exactly the same way, going to high heat when set to medium and staying on high when turned all the way off. Finally, the front left burner came on by itself without being touched, when no one was even in the kitchen.
Consumer called and explained the incident to a manufacturer rep., (name unknown), who told consumer that they could send a service technician to his house but consumer would have to pay for service. Consumer did not accept the offer.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller purchased an electric range December 2008, received delivery January 2009, however from the beginning she had issues with stove overheating, burning food when set at lower temperatures but fluctuating at much higher levels of temperature. Caller states that she has been baking for years and had never had these problems so she contacted retailer who sent repair tech out. Repair tech said he had to obtain/order parts but then no one ever came back out again. Around Jun 2009 retailer replaced range with another of same model. Caller began noticing problems with the second range received in Fall 2009. She called retailer in Fall of 2009 who sent tech out and who told caller that the range was fluctuating but at only 5 to 10 degrees off the set temperature & he didn’t believe that this small variation was anything to worry about, caller states that she thought at that time that this was acceptable. Sometime around May 9th or 10th, 2011 caller began noticing that whenever she uses the oven on this stove and the oven is set at 350 degrees to 375 degrees at the highest then her baked food is drying, burning and cooking much faster than it should be and that there is an odor in the air coming from the oven that smells like it is self cleaning. On 6/19, while using the oven, she heard a “pop” and black smoke came out of a vent. The oven is no longer working, and this incident did not trip the breaker. She would like to know if this can be investigated for safety issues as she is afraid that this can cause a fire.

Around January 2011 caller noticed that the temperature of left front burner of her electric range was difficult to control. As time went on she began realizing that whenever she used this burner with temperature turned on high to begin cooking that when she turned the temperature down it didn’t actually turn down but stayed on high. Whenever she would turn the same left front burner off it would remain on high until she turned it back & forth from high to low and then to off but even that would not always turn it off. She does not use this left front burner at all anymore due to fear of fire. She would like her electric range repaired at manufacturer expense.

Caller is reporting that around December 15th, 2010 her glasstop electric range burners began turning on and heating up on their own, couldn’t be turned off. Turning on and heating up was random, she never knew which burner would turn on and get very hot and red. The warmer burner which she never had used began turning on and lighting up also. Callers began turning off the breaker with each use of their range for fear of fire. Caller contacted repair, service techs came out 3 times, oncee for Service call to analyze, once for service and third to repair what he had not completed or completed incorrectly with guidance from someone else by phone. The range appeared to be repaired at this time so she began using it again January 2011 but around May 7th, caller was preheating the oven when she heard a loud noise like an explosion then all the lights on the range went out, big black puff of smoke came out of range, breaker had partially kicked off, caller’s husband completed disconnection of breaker. A second large puff of smoke came out of stove. Caller states that she is very much afraid of this range causing a fire, she has seen so many recalls for model numbers very close to hers but not hers. She would very much like to have her range inspected and recalled. She would like her range repaired at manufacturer expense.
