(11/22/2012) The consumer stated that they were removing a turkey from the oven. The oven rack was on the bottom and it became dislodged. This happens where ever the rack is positioned. The consumer stated that it is unsafe.
No damage was caused. There was a big spill in the oven.
The cooktop lock out button does not work properly. Other functions are triggered when the panel top is wiped. This happens consistently. Also, the meat thermometer activates when not plugged in.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Glasstop Range
We had Kenmore appliances installed by the builder of our home 5 years ago. A couple of months ago we started having issues with our Kenmore glass top range. The front left burner of our stove (model #790.96113409) will not shut off and stays on the highest setting. We had to unplug the stove to get it to shut off.
I called 1-888-KENMORE (which was answered by a Sears service technician) and was transferred twice to the “complaint department” and disconnected twice. Then I was transferred a third time to the “recall department” only to get someone who did not speak English and started yelling when I asked for a different representative. I called back a fourth time and was told there is no recall on this product and that he could send a technician out at my expense - $75.00 just to look at it and then see what repairs needed to be done of which additional charges would apply. I advised them that this is a MAJOR fire and SAFETY hazard as we almost had a kitchen fire twice due to the malfunctioning of the product. I noticed that there are other consumers that are experiencing the same issue with the left front burner and the oven. My question is - why is there not a recall on the product and does it take an actual fire to get the product recalled?
The last technician advised me to call the manufacturer of the Kenmore range which is Frigidaire at (800) 374-4432. I tried to speak to a representative but received a recording to call a long distance number (706) 860-4110 to speak with a live representative. Is there any recourse on this product without the expense to the consumer since this was not my fault? Needless to say, if this does not get resolved we will never purchase Kenmore products due to the lack of safety concern and the blantant runaround given by Kenmore.

The product, in the report: Kenmore self cleaning oven. My model number is 790.924141103 and my serial number is VF24431325.
Hello,
My name is [redacted]. Our Kenmore oven caught on fire yesterday. The broiler element was stuck on. We were baking cinnamon rolls, and somehow the broiler came on. We could not turn it off and had to turn the circuit breaker off. It appears this is a frequent problem with Kenmore ovens. I am concerned this is a safety hazard and am going to file a complaint with CPSC.gov. My model number is 790.924141103 and my serial number is VF24431325. This should be recalled before serious or fatal house fires occur.
I await your response.

The product, in the report: 2001 Kenmore Electric Range, 5 burner with glass cooktop, purchased in June 2001, not sure when manufactured
Error lights came on. Oven broiler element red hot when oven was on “bake”. We turned off oven (nothing else was on). We were in the kitchen for 15 minutes more and there was no further indication of a problem. About an hour later, our smoke detectors went off. We saw/smelled no smoke but when we checked the kitchen, stove was too hot to touch. Stove lights indicating hot burners were on, but stove and oven were off according to the control panel. We immediately flipped off circuit breaker. When stove cooled down, we looked closer. The oven had ash inside as though it had gone through cleaning cycle. The oven/broiler element(s) must have come on by themselves. Had we been away, we could have had a fire. Very scary!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Range model number 79099123407
We purchased a Kenmore Elite range in August of 2005. Model 79099123407. In early 2007 (Jan-Feb) we had issues with the front right burner not turning off. The only way to keep it off was to unplug the range. We were told by the tech. that the burner was bad because “we used it too much”. We had it repaired twice and paid over $600 within 90 days. This morning, 11/7/12, it is doing it again! The same burner failed to turn off. If my husband would have already been gone, I would’ve had to call the fire dept. to come help pull the very range out so it could be unplugged. I looked and saw that there is a recall for this model but with rotary knobs and we have digital. The recall for the rotary knobs is for EXACTLY the same problem.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric range
The consumer says that she had just finished cooking, using the cook top and the oven. Fifteen minutes later the unit caught on fire. It was not turned on at the time. She says for the past several weeks the large burner would turn on without being turned on and would heat to different temperatures than selected.
The flames shot out of the back of the unit, from the control board. The consumer says that she contacted the Sears and they informed her the unit is not on recall. She then contacted the manufacturer who told her they would not handle it.
The consumer says that the flame disintegrated itself. She pulled the stove away from the wall. She says the control board was melted and burned. It smelled of an electrical fire. No other damage was done to her home. Her husband shut off the circuit breaker.
This unit is experiencing the same thing as listed in recall # 09-333. Her serial number falls outside of the range of the recall but her model number matches.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
The caller stated that she pre-heated the oven at 350 and approximately 5 mins later she placed the contents in the oven. About 2 mins later the smoke detectors started going off and she noticed smoke emitting from the oven, the contents were on flames, they were removed and discarded. The unit could not be powered off, she waited and kept pressing the control panel, it eventually powered off. They ventilated the house to disperse the smoke.
The caller noticed that although the oven was set for baking, it automatically sets itself on broil mode. This was the first incident. She had seen the oven flashing the time in the past but she had assumed that there was power loss sometime during the day.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.
The caller is concerned that this oven is a fire hazard and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: Kenmore ceramic glass-top electric range model # 79096122409
Kenmore ceramic glass-top electric range model #79096122409 left front burner will not shut off even after repeatedly manually trying to turn it off. Indicator light shows appliance is shut off, however, burner will not cool down and continually comes back on while set in off position. Had to pull stove away from wall and unplug while burner still hot in order to shut it off. Attempted to contact Sears about this using suggested 1-800-549-4505 number; however, automated menu will not allow access to speak to a real person about it. Checked on the Internet and apparently there have been many others with same or similar complaints about this stove on various websites. Unfortunately, apparently they were not able to get satisfaction from Sears or Kenmore. Will be going down to place of purchase (Sears) in person to see if they will back their Kenmore appliance by either repairing it free of charge or replacing the unit before it burns down the house.

I was baking brussel sprouts in my oven and all of a sudden a pop and hissing sound sound came from the stove and the top where the push button controls for the oven are located burst into flames, and black smoke. My husband shut off the circuit breaker to the stove. The smell was awful, what an electrical fire would smell like. I researched the internet and see similar incidents posted for ranges that look exactly like mine. I have never received a recall for this range.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Stainless Steel Electric Range Model # 790.92203011
We have a Kenmore Electric Range, and we had a fire in the oven top electrical unit. We turned it on and moments later we heard a pop sound and flames were coming out of the top . We turned the oven off, and flames continued to come out of the top. The only way to stop the fire was to shut it off from the fuse box. VERY SCARY--Thank god my husband and I were standing there, I ran to get my children and he ran to pull the fuse. This could have been tragic!
I looked for recalls and found the same type of problems with other Kenmore ranges that have been recalled. I checked the Model # 790.92203011 on my range, and it did not match the numbers on the recall. It is the identical problem that the recalled have. This is really a SAFETY HAZARD!!!
My Kenmore range was purchased new August 2010. I called Sears today and told me that since the warranty ran out after 1 year, today is October 2012 I will need to purchase a new range. Are you SERIOUS? This is clearly a manufacturing defect. Aren’t ranges suppose to last more than 2 years? Kenmore and Sears knows this is a defect with their ranges and they continue to sell them and then hold the consumer responsible? This does not give me any confidence or trust in buying from Kenmore any longer. They should stand by their products not cause FIRES in innocent families homes.
TERRIBLE BUSINESS KENMORE AND SEARS.

kenmore electric range top element went out of tempature control heating up with no upper temp limit and also not responding to any shut off switch. This almost burned up the unit and could have resulted in a house fire and who knows what else. The unit could have sustained damage after viewing wiring and carbon marks but I believe it’s able to be fixed. Reading on line it looks like a known problem with a faulty bake/boiller relay. It this a recognized issue? and has a safe improved part exist? thanks

The reporter stated that the consumers were not using the electric range and the heating element came on its own and would not turn off. The consumer stated that because the heating elements were coming on by themselves they replaced the burner switches. The first set of replacement switches did not fix the problem so they replaced the switches again and this corrected the problem. All work was performed by a reputable appliance repair company.
The reporter stated that on 10/25/2012 they were cooking a pizza in the oven and the heating element broke and flames were inside the oven. The reporter stated that when the consumers saw the flames inside the oven they immediately unplug the electrical supply and used an extinguisher to put out the flames.
The reporter stated that no one was injured.
The reporter stated that she researched online and found that her range was posing the same hazard stated on release #09-333.
The reporter stated that she will be contacting the manufacturer to file a complaint.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range (model: 790.92803011)
I bought a Kenmore Electric Range (model: 790.92803011) at Sears on Dec 2010. On Oct 12, 2012, the front outer glass oven door suddenly pop and the glass broken into small pieces without touching it.
The oven was used at about 7:00am on Oct 12 to pre-heat the muffin BAKE at 270deg. Turn off the oven at about 7:10am. Oven was not in use anymore. Without touching the oven door, at about 8:15am, the front outer glass door oven of the Kenmore Electric Range suddenly exploded and the glass door broken into small pieces. Luckily, no one got hurt as my kids just left for school and my wife was stand about few feet away when the outer glass oven door suddenly pop broken.
I contact Sears (1-800-469-4663) on the same day, Oct 12, to report about the incident, but Sears have no interest discussing about the product defect, except asking me if I like to schedule for the repair. Sear representative suggest that I should contact Kenmore to report about this Electric Range glass door broken problem. I follow-up Kenmore with an email describe about the glass door broken but Kenmore have not respond yet.
I plan to contact Sear to get the outer glass oven door replace but afraid the technician will use the same outer glass model, in which I strongly feel unsafe. I believe this Kenmore Electric Range outer glass door product is defect and it should be on a recall list as it is very dangerous to explode like that. I check Sears website at www.searspartsdirect.com and I think the part number for the Electric Range outer glass door oven is 316452717 (Glass, oven door, black, w/foil). Right now, I will postpone the replacement outer glass oven door until I gather more fact about this Kenmore Electric Range outer glass door product.

UPDATE: After numerous contacts to 1-800-4-my-home, Customer Services at Sears and Sedgwick Insurance between 9/24 and 10/23, I Have opened up a claim/report with CPSC. Sears is not going to give me a stove that does not set itself on fire, and they told me that they do not recall appliances, that the CPSC does. They will replace it if it is on recall, which it currently is not. I asked if they cared that a 15 1/2 month old stove burst into flames. They said they understand my frustration and appreciate me shopping at Sears. I have enclosed 8 photos of an appliance in excellent maintenance whose wires behind the control panel ignited upon using the oven. I have also enclosed a 5-page report from the fire department. The stove will be stored in my garage for anyone who cares to look at it. Please do what you can to get this stove off the market, or at least hold someone accountable for its replacement.

I have a Kenmore electric smooth (glass) top range Model 790. (Model 790.96021405) Approximately one year ago, the left front large burner began operating on high no matter what temperature setting was used. Additionally, the burner would fail to turn off when the dial was turned to off. This was repaired by the replacement of the dial mechanism. Now, the right front large burner is doing the same thing. The Kenmore Elite range Model 790 has been recalled along with other Frigidaire ranges in the same style, however these do not appear to have been recalled despite reports of the same issue. The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite smooth top range - electric. Installed in 2003.
I have a Kenmore Elite smooth top electric range. Model # 92002102 Serial # RP1833073 It was in my home when I purchased the house 2 years ago. About two weeks ago, the right front burner would not turn to a low temperature. Even at the “low” setting, it was red hot (as if it was on the high setting). This happened only once and since I could not recreate the problem, I did not call for service.
Today I was baking. I smelled something burning and opened the oven to find that both the oven AND the broiler element were on. I know I did not turn on the broiler. I turned off the oven. About 10 minutes later I again smelled something very hot (fortunately I was still in the kitchen). I went to the range and could feel heat. I opened the oven door and the broiler element was ON. ALL the settings were off and there was no way to turn off the broiler. I turned off the circuit breaker as that is the only to turn off the oven.
If I had not been in the kitchen when this event occurred, it would have burned the house down - absolutely NO doubt about that. I checked for recalls of this model range and although there are several reports of this evetn occurring to consumers, no recall has been issued by the manufacturer. Even if the control board is replaced, the new part will be designed exactly like the old part since no recall has been issued to cause the part to be re-designed. There is no doubt what so ever that this is a dangerous product and should be recalled. Do a web search on this model number and you will see the reports.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Range
I have a Kenmore Elite Range Model number 7909664**** that has almost burned my house down twice now. This unit does not seem to be in past recalls, but I have seen MANY of the same issues by other consumers reported online. First there have been problems with the element not turning off after it has been turned off. This is the same problem I have seen wide spread on models that are very similar to my model. Sometimes, we have to touch the off sensor several times to get the element, or part of the element, to turn off. Because of this, my son caught a pot holder on fire when he left it on the stove top not realizing that the element had not turned off. Luckily, no one was injured. The main issue we have had is the oven unit that heats up extremely fast and past the set temperature. The unit will start beeping and flashing a “run away temperature” code but continues to heat up, and the controls are useless. The oven went from off to over 600 degrees in less than five minutes and the food inside the oven was smoking with small flames. It would not turn off with the controls and I had to run downstairs to kill the power via the breaker. My husband burned himself opening the EXTREMELY hot oven to (1) get out the smoking, burning food and (2) try to cool the inside temperature down. We only know it was 600 degrees and climbing because we have a thermometer in the oven so we always know the correct oven temperature. I truly believe that this range and other similar models are a safety hazard. The estimated date below is for the oven incident and not the stove top problem. That has been going on for a good while, we have just never looked into. We did not know there was a recall because of the same issue with similar models, nor did we think about reporting it. I wish now we would have and think Sear’s should have to refund everyone’s money on the ranges with these problems.

I heard a pop from my oven and didnt think anything of it. Like an hour later I wanted to bake some cookies so I preheated the oven to 350. I waited for over 20 mins and it was only on 310. I opened the oven and it felt a lot cooler than 310 and it didnt bake my cookies. It then got a lot hotter. I turned my oven off and noticed that the heating element in around the fan was bright orange...even when my oven was off!!! I had to turn off the actual power for the oven from the power box. I tried to turn it on again later and it still lit up orange, heating away, by itself!! I dont want to think about what could have happened at night or if no one was home! Its dangerous!!! a firehazard!! I cant even use my range because the oven still lights up. I have to shut off all power for the stove!! II believe this product is dangerous and it seems to me to be similar to the kenmore oven recall, its an identical problem! I tried calling sears, who transferred me to frigidair because they make kenmore i guess?, who transferred me to kenmore, who transferred me to sears recall/repair, who said I would have to pay for someone to fix it, who then transferred me to kenmore where the guy I spoke to wouldnt let me talk to his supervisor who tried to transfer me to someone, I called that number back and was beyond upset at this point, and the guy i spoke to next told me “first thing we need to do is speak in a professional manner” and hung up on me (SO MUCH FOR PROFESSIONAL). I called kenmore back and spoke to someone a lot niceer, but yet still not able to really help me, who transferred me to kenmore customer care, who couldnt really help me either, and told me to write a complaint on here. This all happened withing 2 hours of calling and calling and being misled to another company with no one willing or able to tell me what is going on or even caring about my dangerous stove.

For a few weeks the left front burner would only work on high and would not turn off immediately when knob turned to off position. It would take several times of turning the knob on and back off before burner would turn off. The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
On [10/3/12] at approximately 4:55 p.m., the heating element in our Kenmore electric range, Model 790.9601 caught fire, without stimulus. Fortunately my wife was in the kitchen when this occurred. We called 911, and used a fire extinguisher. Two fire trucks arrived, and fortunately we were able to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher.
We have found that similar problems from Kenmore ranges have been noted, and recalled. This particular model has been reported as well for the same problem.
When we called Sears, they acknowledged that (a) we cannot use the range again due to the use of the fire extinguisher; and (b) that similar problems have been reported.
The “customer service” department stated that although they acknowledge similar reports have been made, because we did not purchase the extended warranty, the most they could do is offer a discounted repair (which they stated could not be done) or a 10% off coupon (which one can typically find in the newspaper). It took 7 attempts to speak with someone, after being transferred from line to line and being disconnected twice.
Sears is unwilling to take responsibility for an obvious and dangerous flaw that nearly cost our family its home and threatened the safety of my wife and sons.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
FIRE HAZARD I tried to turn off the right front burner, but the middle ring element would not turn off. Burned the bottom of the soup I was cooking. It took 5-10 minutes to realize that I shut the burner off, but the element did not turn off. The range panel/control indicated the burner was off. Once I realized the burner would not turn off even the the control said it was off, I turned the range off at the circuit breaker in the basement. Resetting the circuit breaker did not fix the problem. Fortunately, I was home and in the kitchen after I tried turning it off. Otherwise, it may have started a fire. From the picture you can see where the range was turned on (hence the PF - power failure status), the burner indictors are not on, but the element is on anyway. It’s quite unsafe.

My Kenmore oven turned on its broiler element on Sunday 9-23-2012. The oven was being used to bake a bread and I smelled smoke so I went to the kitchen and found the oven on and the charing bread. I pressed the off button for the oven and the controls on the panel indicated that all was off but the broiler element did not turn off. After waiting for a few minutes to be sure I then flipped the breaker to the oven. I left the power off for several minutes then powered it back up. The broiler element once again started up. The oven is now disconnected from the power outlet.
On Wednesday my wife called Sear’s service to request service for this. She told me that the agent who answered her call offered a warranty for $258 one time offer that would then qualify our stove for repair.
On Thursday 9-27-12 I found the advisory of the of a recall on your site #09-333 that indicates a model similar to ours was recalled. I have the receipt of our purchase that shows we bought it in 2002. This is a Kenmore Ultra-Bake. Mod 95823003 sn RM5012260.

Tonight, my Kenmore Elite (model 790.9659) range malfunctioned. I turned off the ceramic cook-top after I finished making dinner, but when I went back into the kitchen 2 hours later, I found that the heating element on the cooktop was STILL RED HOT. The controls were non-responsive - and really hot. I had to unplug the oven/range to turn it off. When I went to plug it back in 30 mins later (thinking that it would surely reset itself in that time), the defective burner heated up again right away. So, now I can’t use any part of the oven without extra fire danger.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electirc range/oven
This oven’s left side burner has been a problem from the beginning of purchase. There is a simmer button with this burner. It has never heated correctly. Four years after purchase, the right side has blown/popped and kicked off our circuit. We are having a repairman check into the cost of repair, but we will most likely replace it.
I notice online that there are other instances of similar. Hopefully, problem will not cause and injury or fire hazard for someone else. Range is Kenmore Electirc Range ( smoothtop) model number 790-96412

The product, in the report: This product is the Kenmore Elite Range/Oven. It has a flat glass top cooking surface. It is black with stainless steel accents. Self-clearning.
Prior to pressing any buttons the oven was powered but not on meaning that the digital display was illuminated as usual. The oven hadn’t been used in about 24hrs and was working correctly the last time it was used. The oven was turned on using the pre-heat oven button. When the button was pressed the oven started buzzing, followed by some popping noises. Then black smoke started coming from behind the oven followed by flames. Before I could get to the main circuit breaker the unit burned itself out and shut down and the flames stopped.

Electric Range (Model: 790.9611340A, SN: VF71427193) experiences same issues associated with recall: Release # 09-333 Frigidaire and Kenmore Smooth top Electric Ranges Recalled Due to Fire Hazard”. Front left burner stays on after switch is turned to the “OFF” position, range needs to be unplugged or circuit breaker thrown to disable burner. Current recall does NOT include this model/SN in the recall list, similar appliances should be reevaluated for a recall.
After cooking for 4 hours on this burner, removed pan from burner and found the burners glass cooktop had melted. Not sure if this is associated with the issue above or user error.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
My Kenmore Electric Range,(Model#79092803010),the glass oven door on last night just exploded into millions of tiny pieces. I just purchased this product in Jan.2011. I couldn’t believe it, i and my son was just standing in the kitchen talking and then Pow, and then the oven glass just shattered. I called sears that next morning and told them what happened. The service center rep proceeded to tell me that the range was not under warranty any longer and the times avalaible for a technician to come and evaluate the damage without paying for the service call. She did apologize for what happened. I thought this company was reliable in what they put on the market to sell. Now, i find it not to be true after what i have been reading consumer complaints reguarding their products and how it handles complaints.

The product, in the report: Kenmore flat top electric stove. White.
Defective heating elements. For a couple years now our burners fail to turn off. Sometimes I swear they heat to a different temperature than what is selected. We constantly have to play with the knobs to try to get them to turn off the burners. One of our burners now doesn’t turn off completely and we had to cut power to the stove all together and not use it. We’ve looked into recalls and discovered that we are not the only ones with this problem. What we’ve noticed is that our serial number isn’t one of the many included in the current recall. Our number is very close, but not quite in the bunch that is part of the recall. Our appliances were purchased at Sears and since our serial number is not part of the recalled numbers they want to charge us a lot of money for a service contract to get it fixed! I feel this recall should include our stove since these faulty parts are not limited to just a few serial numbers.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range, Model #66592014102
I was preheating my Kenmore Electric Range/Oven, Model #66592014102 when I recieved an error message on the display of the oven. It appeared to read “PF 5” and then the oven shut off. The display went blank. I decided to go to the upper level of my home with laundrey and assumed the oven was off. While upstairs, I smelled something strange and when I came into the kitchen, I noticed the “baking stone” in the oven was on fire and the “heating coils” on the top of the stove were on and the oven was extremely hot. The only way to get the oven to turn off was to turn it off at the circuit breaker. It took almost 5 hours for the stove to cool down. This oven is definitely a fire hazard and if I had not been home, it could have been a disaster.

I was preparing dinner for our family and was heating up some food in the oven at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes and then turned oven up to 350 degrees just before I was ready to serve the food. I was standing at the kitchen counter getting dishes ready to set up outside for our Labor Day gathering, when the oven door shattered/exploded into a thousand pieces all over my kitchen! I have a black pub style table across the room from the stove and the shards from the glass scratched the wood on the stools. The shards were everywhere, even at the other end of my kitchen by the refrigerator! Thank goodness everyone else was outside and no one was hurt.
I was extremely upset, needless to say.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range model 790.9218
My family was in the living room watching TV when we heard a loud pop and then glass shattering and crashing to the floor. I went into the kitchen to find that the outer glass on my oven door had shattered into a million pieces. It had been two hours since I had used the stove top while cooking dinner and OVER A MONTH since I had used the oven. It is hot here in the summer and we cook on the grill rather than turn the oven on. The cracking and falling glass continued for a few minutes. Some of the glass flew about 4 feet, colliding with the cabinets on the other side of the kitchen. Luckily no one was in there. We were shocked that this could happen.
When I called Sears the next morning, I spoke with two different operators, neither of whom seemed to be surprised that this had happened. They offered a brief apology and then proceeded to set up the repair service. They did ask if the oven was hot and I explained that it had not been used in over a month, but also that my husband had checked the inside and it was at room temperature. I have a protection agreement on my range because it is an induction cooktop and that is new technology. Sears ordered new glass for the door and set up an appointment for a technician to come in a week to install it at no cost to us.

My Kenmore Elite stove: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
We had to remove all electronics from the burner itself to keep it from turning on and off by itself. Our model number is NOT on the recall list, but is having the same problem as other stoves previously recalled.

Since I first purchased this oven in 2008 at least every other time I use the oven, the rack falls as a result of any weight whatsoever on it. I am so frustrated. My husband is so frustrated. It causes huge issues ranging from spilt food to broken ceramic bakeware. It is an enormous hazard, danger and risk and potentially will burn someone who is placing food in the oven or removing it. It is very clear that the racks in the oven are too small for the oven itself. It is a defect in the oven that Sears is not taking proper responsibility for. ***It is impossible to name an incident date as this has been an ongoing problem for as long as I have owned the oven.

After heating pizza in our oven, closing the door and walking away the exterior glass window on the oven shattered and landed as far as 2 feet from the stove. The door was not slammed and the shattering did not happen instantly - I had time to close the door, turn away from the oven and set down the pizza tray before I heard the loud sound of the glass exploding. I contacted Sears and the person I spoke with explained that the item was no longer covered under warranty. She did not express that this was a common occurrence as I later found out when researching replacement parts online. I am concerned that this has happened many times and a recall has not been issued.

My Sears Kenmore range, model 665.95822002 s/n RL1812628 has several times over the past few years not turned off (stove portion) even though it was turned off and the control panel shows it is off. There is no way to turn it off other than to turn off the circuit breaker. Even after doing this and letting it cool for several hours, it will sometimes come back on as soon as power is restored. It takes several attempts using the circuit breaker to restore normal function. When this happens, the oven gets extremely hot, as if it is on a cleaning cycle, or even hotter. Once the smoke detector in the kitchen came on to alert us.

We purchased a Sears Kenmore electric range 6 years ago. Soon after, the handle would fall off, when we opened the range. Then the whole front of the door would fall off,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the screws don’t seem to be long enough to hold the door on. It has become a dangerous problem. When the oven is hot and the door, falls off in pieces, it is dangerous. I contacted Sears. They said contact Kenmore. I did. They never answered. I went on-line and found that other people had this same problem. Any suggestions? Has this product had any recalls? Thank you, [REDACTED]Model 790

My Kenmore electric range (purchased at Sears 79096129408/ VF64685561) has a front left burner that will not shut off. We have had problems with the burner for months but were always able to eventually get it to shut off by playing with the knob. However, today after 15 minutes of trying, it still would not shut off. I shut down the electric circuit to the range to prevent a fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore ceramic top electric range
I first noticed something was wrong with the stove back when I blogged about the broiler failing a few weeks ago. When it failed I had to come up with an alternative way to finish dinner. I didn’t think much of it and just assumed that I’d no longer be able to use that function on the oven. Not perfect, but I knew the oven was a few years old and I figured it was slowly dying.
Then this week my son’s girlfriend made dinner for them and within about 10 minutes I started smelling a strong hot, metallic smell. Just as I was about to ask my son if he smelled it (we were all upstairs and the kitchen is on the main floor), every smoke detector in the house started going off. I live with a fireman so we have LOTS of detectors and they were going off even though it was hot and we had every window and door in the house open.
The chicken was black and the heat was so high it stained the opening around the door of the oven. My son opened the oven, laughed at his girlfriend for burning dinner, and then turned off the stove. He saw the broiler element was on and assumed she’d hit broil instead of bake and chocked it up to her using a stove she’s not familiar with.
When the element remained glowing hot and 500 degrees after about 10 minutes it was obvious something was wrong. The silly son thought it was just taking a while to cool down but I knew better. I had him switch the oven off again and then wait 3 minutes. The element remained on. I sent him to shut off the breaker and finally the element went off.
I started shopping for a new stove assuming this one was just broken when the hubby came upon note after note of other people with this same Kenmore stove having similar incidents. It wasn’t long before I found a recall for Kenmore stoves from 2001 to 2009 (ours is a 2003 – I know that thanks to a review I wrote about the stove when we received it on Epinions.com). While the recall is for the Elite Model, ours has experienced the same failure. Frigidaire and Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Ranges Recalled Due to Fire Hazard.
Looking into if further, things could have been worse. Here’s what happened to someone who has the same model as mine:
On Monday 1/16/12, i was making dinner, baked potatoes in aluminum foil, and my oven turned onto self cleaning mode after cooking for 30 minutes. It locked down, and caught on fire. We called 911 because our house was filled with smoke, and fire in the oven. The Fire Department instructed us to contact Sears, to report it, and I did. They also instructed me to report this to you as well. - source http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1225253 And it’s not an isolated incident. Here are other online notes about similar safety hazards:

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dual Fuel Range model # 7907938 purchased at Sears
I have a kenmore elite dual fuel range model # 7907938. It is about 5 years old. Tonight while making dinner I preheated the oven and moments later I heard an electric crackling sound and smoke and flames were coming up from behind the top of the oven. My fiancé had to grab the fire extinguisher and put the flames out before the cabinets and wall caught on fire. After the flames were put out the control board was completely blacked out and the oven no longer worked. Luckily we were in the kitchen when this occurred or we may have lost our home. After researching online about this issue, I have seen numbers complaints of the same exact incident with this model range. I have yet to see any recall of this product. How many complaints have to be reported in order for this to be recognized as a manufacture defect. If this issue is not addressed someone may loose their home or worse, a loved one. Please contact me with a response to this report.

This happened on a glass top stove. Stove burner was set to a low temperature but was blazing hot. We could not get the burner to lower without turning it off. The next day, the burner was used on high, but it would not turn off at all. It continued to blaze for approximately 20 minutes while I tried switching it on and off, lowering the temperature, etc. Eventually it did turn off.
I looked on-line and found that Sears had a recall on our Serial Number. Another worrisome safety concern I found described was that the burner could also spontaneously turn on.
When I called for the “free” repair, they said that my Model number was not in the recall even though my Serial number is, and I am definitely having the same problem as many others.

I set the oven to 350 degrees to bake chicken. Five minutes after placing the chicken in the preheated oven, there was a snapping sound from the oven. I saw flashes and heard pops coming from the electronic instrument panel. I attempted to push the stop button repeatedly, but it did not turn off the unit. After approx. 5 seconds the instrument panel popped loudly and caught fire. Luckily, we were able to put the fire out with a dry chemical fire extinguisher before there was any significant damage to the kitchen. The oven instrument panel is destroyed and the unit is completely unusable.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
The consumer says that he is experiencing the same problem as listed in recall 09-333 but his model is not included. The consumer says that the two left hand burners come on in the middle of the night. It ruined a pot that was sitting on one of the burners. The burners would not shut off without shutting off the circuit breaker.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told him the unit is not on recall and offered no assistance. He has had the control panel switched out last year. It did not resolve the issue. He says that they are using the oven and the other two burners. They have unplugged the two left burners from the circuit board. The circuit breaker is shut off every night to prevent a potential hazard. The consumer does not understand.
Consumer Added: I hope that you can resolve this issue for us soon. We feel like our family is being held captive by the electric range. Constantly having to flip the breaker switch every time you need to cook or finish cooking, this has been a chore. Waking up in the middle of the night afraid someone forgot to flip the breaker has also become a very tiresome nightmare. We thought about selling the Electric range but decided that it would probably burn somebody else’s house down and possibly killing them. We are stuck with this expensive appliance that we can’t use properly and can’t sell it so we can buy another one. If the range is ever fixed I will never be able to trust leaving it on because who is sure that the spontaneous burner ignition won’t happen again. I would like to see Kenmore take this range back and give me a fair price for it so that I may go and purchase a more safe product for my family.

(7/26/2012) The consumer stated that he was using his oven on the broil setting. The consumer had the oven running for approximately 10 minutes, when his dish finished broiling. When he went to shut off the oven, it would not. The consumer stated that he unplugged the unit, in order to shut it off completely. He waited another 10 minutes and plugged the unit back in. The oven automatically turned back on immediately after he plugged the stove back in.
(7/27/2012) The manufacturer was contacted, no report was filed and he was informed that since there was no recall on it, they wouldn’t be able to assist him. They offered for a technician to come out to his home to diagnose the stove for a fee of $75, which he declined.
-The consumer stated that approximately 1.5 months ago he filed an incident report on the same stove, but for the top 2 burners not shutting off. That issue has not been resolved.

The consumer was baking a pie. It took an hour to bake and the consumer turned the oven off. Thirty minutes later the outer glass exploded after he had just started to open the door to take out the pie. He says small pieces of glass went all over him but he was not injured. Glass shattered all over the kitchen.
He says there are others who have complained of this issue involving the same product. The consumer says that the company only has a year warranty on this item.
The customer is concerned because the glass exploded without warning. He says it is of a definite safety concern.
The consumer has not yet talked to the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel range with black, flat cook top and traditional and convection oven. (electric)
When I turned the heat from Hi to 8 on the left front burner of my cook top, I saw sparks behind the control panel directly behind the knob. I heard a popping sound and smelled a faint odor like something was burning. I quickly turned the knob to off and heard another pop. I tried to look behind the panel (without pulling the stove away from the wall), but I didn’t see fire or smoke. I made note of where the fire extinguisher was and kept an eye on the range, checking it throughout the evening. Nothing else seemed to happen.
I called Sears tonight about it; the gentleman suggested I go to www.searshomeservices.com/chat to talk with a technician. I did that, but the person with whom I chatted seemed not to be a technician but a saleswoman. For $256.79 I could have someone come look at the range as many times as I wanted for a year, and if they couldn’t fix it, they’d give me a coupon for $500 toward a new range.
We purchased the range in April 2010. I feel this is a manufacturer’s safety issue, even though it is out of warranty.
I am worried about using the cook top, especially after hearing that others have had problems with the wiring and burners.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Stove Model: 665.92023101 smooth top range.(electric)
I have a Kenmore Stove Model: 665.92023101. The right front burner is off with the knob in the off position but when it is on, it stays on high regardless of the temperature setting. I have replaced the infinite switch, the main control board and the surface element but it still behaves the same way.
