The product, in the report: glass top 5 burner electric range, Kenmore
On January 4th 2011 I purchased an electric Kenmore range, on July 8th 2012 while ii was simply wiping the oven clean the glass door suddenly exploded. My two children 6 and 2 were in the room when this occurred luckily no one was seriously injured except my 2 year old who cut her foot. I had not even used this oven in over 3 days. I called Sears where I purchased the oven and they informed me it was no longer under warranty even under the circumstance. I had to purchase an additional warranty for two hundred and thirty nine dollars for them to come out fix the door and insure it for one more year. As I found on this web site that this will be the forth Kenmore range that has done this very same thing all beginning in model number 790. Please contact me as to how I should proceed in this matter [REDACTED]. Thank you. Kenmore has not responed to me.

The product, in the report: Electric Range/Oven
(7/15/2012) The consumer stated, while in the kitchen he heard something fell. When he turned around to look he noticed that the door handle to the oven had fallen off. He walked over and inspected the handle. The glass door then shattered unexpectedly. (7/16/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and they informed him that the warranty expired in 2011. They were not going to assist him unless he paid for a technician to come out and inspect the unit. The consumer declined the offer.
(7/16/2012) The retailer was later contacted and they were only offering to sell him an extended warranty. He was transferred to the safety department and the Rep. (name unknown) disconnected the call.

The product, in the report: Broiler stuck on and would not shut off, electrical plug had to be pulled.
Baking in kenmore range, model 665.92002102, baking at 350 degrees for 34 min. per recipe instructions. Something failed in the circuitry or electronics of the range and the broiler came on at some point which was unknown to us. We noticed smoke coming from range and took out baked dish and tried to shut oven off by cancel off switch on range panel. Broiler/oven would not shut off, just kept getting hotter.Had to pull range out from counter and pull electrical plug to turn off broiler/oven.This is a significant fire hazard. If we had not been home and had set to “timed bake”, could have caused fire and burned house down!!! We did [REDACTED] search and found there have been numerous complaints listed online regarding this problem with this model kenmore range and similar model numbers in this classification of kenmore electric ranges. See for yourself, [REDACTED] search this model kenmore range.

The product, in the report: Glasstop Electric Range (Black) 29 7/8” W
We were using our stove and noticed the burner on top of the oven was red-hot even though the heat was on medium. The dish we were cooking had started to burn and we frantically turned the knob to the off switch. Nothing happened. With the stovetop almost on fire, I ran down into the basement and had to turn off the Main power to the house. There was no time to figure out which breaker was correct, just needed to get the stove turned off before a kitchen fire. Just after this happened, we were baking cookies (at whatever was the appropriate temperature) and within a few minutes the cookies were burnt to a crisp. This stove now has two fire hazards and we cannot use it out of a concern for our safety. Based on the multiple hazards we’ve read in other reviews we cannot in good faith invest in repairing this stove and are asking [REDACTED] for a full refund of our money for this defective product.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop electric range- 4 burners and with the knobs located on the back of the range above the burners.
The consumer stated that he has an electric range that the surface heating elements change Spontaneously. The consumer stated that all of the burner had been experiencing the same problems, but the front burners have been experiencing more problems. The consumer stated that after turning the knobs to off, the burners continued to be on. The consumer had to turn off the circuit breaker to turn the range off. The consumer stated that when he turn the knobs to off, the range lights show that the elements are off, but that the hot surface light stays on. He stated that the burners do not turn off. The consumer stated that no one was injured. The consumer stated that there were no damages to his home structure. The consumer believes that his range was experiencing the same hazard stated on release # 09-333. The consumer stated that he contacted the manufacturer and they informed him that there was no recall on his particular model.
UPDATE: One thing that has not been included in this report is that on the evening after I made the report, the range actually caught on fire. We have a family of five and we were trying to get by by turning the circuit breaker back on only when we needed to cook. I turned the breaker back on and was cooking on the manfunctioning burner (since it was staying on anyway), and something below the control panel and behind the range top started glowing red. When the burner cut off and back on (to regulate the burner temperature), a loud pop occured and fire shot from under the control panel across the room. I turned the breaker off permanently and have not tried to use the range since. Trying to use this type of range once you have noticed problems could lead to a house fire. I would recommend to anyone not to use this product once problems have been discovered.
My family and I have owned several Kenmore products over the years with no complaints. Since this report, I have ordered a new Kenmore gas range/oven and a matching Kenmore microwave (model #s 72903 and 85033). I have faith in Kenmore products and hope they will do what is right in regards to the problems I had. Our new oven and microwave is to be delivered on 8/3/12. This is the earliest I could get one and have been without a range/oven since 7/10/12, which has been a big inconvenience.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smooth top electric range model 790.9601
The front left burner of the Kenmore smooth top electric range will often not stay on the level set by the knob. The temperature will increase to high or what seems hotter than high. This poses a fire hazard and is dangerous for the user. I called sears to see if the product was on the recall list as other very similar models have been recalled, and was told curtly that my product was not on the recall list. When I said I would like to report an issue about the burner and see about repairs the customer service rep began their closing script and disconnected the call, so I was unable to get further information or report the malfunction as an issue.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric Range; stainless steel oven/convection oven combo. 30”
On Saturday, July 7, 2012 while warming up lunch for my husband, myself and my husband’s daughter and her husband and two small children, my step-daughter and I were in the kitchen working while lunch was warming up. The oven was set at 350 degrees. There was a LOUD pop! Very scary! I carefully opened the oven door and was shocked to see the glass on the door had shattered. We were very fortunate that the glass shattered inside and did not explode into the kitchen were we were working. I have put a call and sent an email to Sears [REDACTED] the representative who help with the quote on our new appliances for our new home that was just built and we moved in about 2 months ago. Sears is sending our a technician to only look at the oven before deciding what they will do. It is taking Sears 10 days to come look at the damaged oven. There is nothing to assure us that this will not happen again and at this point we do not want another Sears Kenmore electric oven/convenction oven in our home. The product is Model No. 790.92903

The Kenmore oven/electric smooth top range was first not heating to correct temperature (the stove top kept getting hotter) and the second problem on the front left burner would not turn off. It was red hot and it kept getting hotter, and would not turn off. I had to throw the breaker switch off and then back on. I retried this the next day and the same thing happened. This almost caused a fire and my family’s safety was endangered. We are a small family and only use the that burner about 7 times a week. I bought the product in 7/2007. The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Slide In Range model 790.4670.
I own a Kenmore Elite 790.4670* Slide in Range. The oven walls have warped on this oven and the oven racks no longer will hold food items. It is a very dangerous situation as hot pots, pans, and food have fallen during cooking. I also came very close to a very severe burn when the oven rack collapsed while removing a hot pan full of food. My wife has suffered burns from similar incidents in the past. I have checked my racks and the racks are all perfect with no bends or problems whatsoever. The problem is that the oven walls have warped to a point that the racks no longer can hold in place. I called Sears and they contend they have “never heard of such a problem” before...which is hard to believe as I have seen numerous complaints about this product online that have been reported to sears. In addition, Sears has refused to accept any responsibility for this defective product and insists that any repairs will be fully at my expense. I am totally disgusted with Sears and this obviously defective product which was touted as a “top of the line” product at the time of my purchase. This is a very dangerous and personally hazardous product. I wish someone could come to my aid to help fix this very expensive and defective product.

this stove was purchased in Aug. 2007. although I turned the knob to the off position off on stove for the front burner., IT DID NOT GO OFF BUT PROCEEDED TO GET RED HOT! the only thing that helped was to flip the breaker switch. This particular front burner (not the dual burner) has not worked since that day. Sears would not fix, the manufacturer warranty had expired.
this happened about 2 years after purchase. this second incidence with the inner glass of door oven shattering happened about 5 days ago. My husband had the oven on 375 ( preheating) all at once there wall a loud pop from the stove area. the inner glass had shattered in many, many pea sized pieces.. the glass did not go into the oven nor out the front of oven but the many pieces fell out thur the bottom of the oven door into warmer tray.

Our Kenmore smooth top electric ranges burners will not turn off when turned off and when using them on a selected temperature they go to high on their own. There is a recall for the same issues that I have for a Kenmore Electric Range but not the one I have. My model # is 790.9601 1 1406 and the serial # is VF64158171. We had purchased extended warranty on it and had a repair man from Sears , which is where we purchased , come out. It was only one burner that was doing it at that time. He said he repaired it. We also had them come out again before the extended warranty expired for a check over of the stove to be sure all was ok. After that and the warranty was out , the second large burner started doing the same thing as the first. We’ve had the stove now since 08/04/2007 and it continues to do the same thing.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
About 3 months ago after cooking in our range, we noticed that the broiler element was still on after we had shut the oven off. We could not get the broiler to shut off by manually pressing any of the buttons on the oven. All controls were set to off. Finally had to unplug the oven to get to turn off. We plugged it back in & all appeared to be ok at this point. Same thing happened about 5 days ago, the only difference being I had to keep it unplugged for a couple of hours before the element stayed off before plugging it back in. Today my daughter was baking a cake, when the broiler came on during the baking process & burnt the cake. This filled the oven & house with smoke causing our alarms to go off. I unplugged the oven to let it cool. Have tried to plug it back in several times within the last few hours & each time the broiler automatically turns back on. There is no other way to shut this off other than unplugging the unit. I feel that this is very unsafe & have had to keep the unit unplugged at all times fearing that it would automatically turn on & start a fire. I have searched online only to find that there are others out there that have had a very similar experience with this model.

I have recently read numerous complaints about Kenmore models of doing this and there has yet to be a recall to include all these models. Not only is this a fire hazard but a safety issue with the consumer as well.

The caller stated that he had powered off oven and the control panel indicated it was off. However, he noticed that the broiler element was on although the control panel did not display that it was on. He had to switch it off from the circuit breaker. This incident triggered the smoke detector. After waiting for the oven to cool down he switched on the circuit breaker and the unit came on again. The circuit breaker was used to power it off.
The caller took precautionary measures by unplugging the unit to prevent a house fire. He is not sure of the manufactured year of the oven since it was installed in the home when he purchased it.
6/14/12 The manufacturer was contacted and he was informed that his electric range/oven was not part of the recall.
The consumer is concerned that this oven is a fire hazard and should be recalled

He started to hear loud sounds inside of the oven and when he opened it, he saw sparks inside. The consumer quickly closed the oven door and turned the stove off. The stove was serviced under CAP# 09-333 in 2009 and the relay board corrected or replaced. The product, in the report: Kenmore Glass top Range 60HZ 3 wire 12.5kw
We bought our home new 5 years ago and the electric range/oven (Kenmore model# 790.9611340a) came with it. It has worked okay in that time but for recently the left front burner will not turn off. The first few times it happened jiggling would turn it off...sometimes a spark or click would come from the back so we just avoided using that burner. Last night I turned the oven on, used it, did dishes and sat on the couch. It’s then I heard the clicking noise the range sometimes makes when it is on and looked to see the left front burner had turned itself on! WE DIDN’T EVEN USE THAT BURNER. No amount of turning or jiggling would turn it off. I finally unplugged the whole thing and called Sears. The call center drone tried to sell me a maintenance plan and in no way was interested in the fact this could have been a huge problem. My wife often sets her purse/groceries on the stove when she comes home and we have a six and three year old who often set things on there as well. I’m glad I caught this when I did. Several Internet searches found that there are other models with this exact problem being recalled but my particular model is not one of them...yet. I work in the homeowners insurance industry and can tell you if this had caused a loss of some sort we would surrogate this company to the hilt. I also know it takes several losses and some math for the corporation to decide it’s more cost effective to recall a model than to fight lawsuits/insurance co’s. It’s too bad someone is going to have to loose their property, become hurt, or die before Sears does the right thing. But that’s business...I’m getting rid of mine and going to a local appliance business. I hope this complaint adds to the list to get something done.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric 220V Range SS S/4380. UPC: 084691804819. Black with stainless steel metal.
My husband and I purchased a Kenmore Electric Range from Sears on 12/13/10. On Saturday, June 2, 2012, I was making breakfast and went to open the oven door to put bread inside to toast and the outer glass completely shattered into a million pieces. My two dogs and elderly father-in-law were in close proximity and it was horrifying. The glass was all over my feet, the kitchen floor as well as on the adjoining living room floor. Absolutely nothing provoked this from happening; I did not hit the glass or was the glass damaged in an earlier incident. The oven is just over 1 year old and is basically new. The mere action of pulling the door open by the handle caused the glass to explode.
This is very concerning to me as there could have been injuries; in fact, I am still finding shards of glass under furniture that could potentially cut someone’s foot. We contacted Sears and they told us that because we did not purchase the extended warranty, the most they could do was call out a technician which will be at our expense. This seem ludicrous as I believe there is some kind of defect in the product.
Please do not hesitate to call us for further information.

The consumer wanted to express her concerns about her electric range as the oven’s broiler element will turn on sporadically and warm to almost excessive temperatures. The consumer stated that this has happened 5 times within the last month. The consumer ordinarily has to try to power off the broiler at the digital panel repeatedly until the model shuts off. However, last night the consumer experienced the problem and the range would not respond to commands at the digital interface.
The range was set to bake at 350 degrees, for 5-10 minutes before the broiler element turned on. The consumer’s husband had to power off the range at the circuit breaker and has not powered the range back on. The consumer went online and found an abundance of reports similar to her incidents. The consumer has not called the fire department or her home insurance company. The consumer started that range appears to be fine.
The consumer has not sustained any property damage. The consumer has not been harmed or injured by the product. The consumer called the retailer today and was informed that her product was not on recall and offered no further. The consumer has yet to call the firm.

The consumer says she went in the kitchen early this morning and saw the front left burner was on. She says it stayed on for twenty minutes while the knob was in the off position. This has already happened several times already.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer today, who told her the product is not under warranty and offered no assistance.
She says it is not normal for a stove to be doing this. She is very upset that the manufacturer did not provide further assistance.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
The consumer says the back of her stove caught fire near the clock. She says it had a strong smell of burning plastic. A technician with the retailer came out and replaced some parts (she is not sure). This happened a year and a half ago.
She says this past Sunday June 3rd 2012, the same thing occurred. She says the oven was on for about an hour at 350 degrees when flames shot out of the same place (back of the unit) as before. She says the fire went out by itself both times.
Her husband pulled it away from the wall and unplugged it.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer on Monday June 4th who told her there is nothing they can do since it is not under recall and is no longer under warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric smooth top range model# 665.95004102
I had set my oven to a temp of 350 and placed a meatloaf in the oven to bake. About 20 minutes in I started to smell smoke and heard the food sizzling. When I opened the oven door I was assaulted with smoke and could feel the broiler element heating, even though it was set to bake not broil. Both elements were heating. I immediately shut the oven off for a couple minutes (although it didn’t shut the element off) then turned it back on. The oven beeped 3 times then read an error message on the screen. I was forced to physically shut the breaker off to the range to get the elements to shut off. From what I have researched on the Internet, there have been several of this model that present this same safety concern.

The product, in the report: Kenmore smoothtop electric range model 665.92012102 white color. Approximate width is 30 inches; approximate depth is 25 inches. Unit is a combination oven and cooktop with backsplash. Both oven and cooktop controls are located on the backsplash.
We own a Kenmore model 665.92012 smoothtop electric range/oven unit. On Friday, June 1, 2012, we used the oven to bake bread. The oven heated to a temperature well above the temperature to which it was set, causing the bread to burn, the oven to fill with smoke, and smoke to begin to fill the kitchen. Turning off the oven did not turn off the heating element. Removing the bread ended the immediate smoke problem, but the oven would not turn off until unplugged from the wall. Upon plugging in again, the heating elements turned on again despite the control showing no oven setting. After a second unplug (where the oven remained unplugged for approximately 2 hours), plugging the oven back in again resulted in the heating element turning on. There is no way to disable the heating elements via the controls; only unplugging the oven accomplishes this.
This problem was preceded by a more minor problem; if the problems are related it is possible that the minor problem may be a warning sign for the more major (safety) problem. For the last several weeks, the (electronic) controls for the oven were functioning abnormally. To adjust oven temperature on this model when it is working, you must press the temperature up/down buttons repeatedly from the default (“bake”) setting of 350 degrees. In recent weeks, these button presses did not register properly and sometimes were ignored. Other times, a single button press led to repeated changes in temperature setting. We suspect this is the result of a defective computer control.

The product, in the report: Electric Range w/four burners and warmer
Sunday, May 27th, 2012 the caller’s wife was turning electric range oven on to preheat when the center console burst into flames. She immediately reached for the fire extinguisher but in those few moments the fire extinguished itself so she opened windows to clear the smoke from her kitchen.
Breaker did click off when this incident occurred.
Flames are estimated to have been approximately five to seven inches high using the wall above the range as a measurement with the scorching on the wall being five to six inches above the range height.
She called her husband who advised her to unplug the range. It has been pulled from the wall, unplugged and is inoperable.
Caller contacted the manufacturer May 30th, 2012 and was advised that his range is not on recall, not covered by warranty and that they could repair it at his expense.
Caller does not agree that this repair should be at his expense due to the range being only seven years old and fire not being an acceptable issue. He would like repair successfully completed at manufacturer expense.

My 9-year-old Kenmore Range was set to bake. After 8 minutes we checked the food and realized the broiler unit was on. We turned it off and the broiler did not turn off. We cut the breaker but every time we turn the breaker back on the broiler comes on. I don’t have my model number handy but it is a smooth top, ultra bake, self-cleaning, super capacity. If we did not catch this it would have created a fire. Please issue a recall!

Glass shattered (for the SECOND TIME!) all over my boyfriend’s feet and legs, all over the kitchen. All he did was open the door normally to get dinner out of it and the glass exploded into a million tiny little pieces everywhere. This happened once before about two years ago not long after I bought it, same scenario, only it was covered under it’s 1 year warranty. Now it’s not. I have read hundreds of consumer reports all over the internet of people complaining of KENMORE RANGES AND TOASTER OVENS FRONT DOOR GLASS BREAKING/EXPLODING. ( http://www.selectsmart.com/DISCUSS/read.php?34,601635,page=1) If you copy and paste this link, it will take you to SIX PAGES of people complaining of the SAME EXACT INCIDENCE.

The product, in the report: Black Kenmore 30” Free Standing Self-Clean Glass Top - Radiant Unit, Model #911-95459590.
Kenmore 30” Free Standing Self-Clean Glass Top - Radiant Unit (Model #911-95459 590) has a bottom heating element in the oven that turns on even though the oven control knob is in the “OFF” position. I have been awakened from sleep two separate nights, weeks apart, because I could smell “heat” and discovered that my oven was burning red hot even though the oven knob was in the “OFF” position. We resolved the problem each time by turning the breaker off. When we flipped the breaker back on, the oven would remain off as it should.
The last time we used the self-cleaning feature on the oven, about 4 months ago, the oven seemed to get hotter than it had the previous year when we used the self-cleaning feature. This time, it also seemed to emit a strange chemical, or plastic burning smell. And it seemed the oven stayed on way too long, over 4 hours, until I manually turned the cleaning feature off. We have not used this feature again because of the horrible smell and the long cleaning duration and intense heat the oven put out.
This week we are dealing with the oven coming on and heating up beyond the temperature set and then not turning off when we turn the oven control knob to “OFF”. Again we have to remedy it by turning the breaker to the stove off. However, when we turn the breaker back on, the oven’s bottom heating element begins burning red hot, though the controls are “OFF” and no lights come on the stove top indicating that the oven is ON. This is a serious safety issue and we cannot leave the breaker to the stove in the ON position like normal. As it is, the breaker to the stove is left off until we have to use the stovetop. We use the stovetop to cook (meanwhile, the oven heating element comes on and burns hot the entire time though the oven knob is in the OFF position and no lights have come on to indicate the oven is even on) and as soon as we finish using the stovetop to cook, we flip the breaker to OFF again. This is not normal operation for a stove and a serious safety issue.

After the breaker tripped the fire went out on its own. He says that a while back he had to replace the oven door handle and had an issue with the right front burner that never turned on the hot surface light. He says after the burners have been turned off, they stay hot for an inordinate amount of time. Upon examination of the unit the motherboard was fried. It appears as though this was a faulty piece of equipment. This situation could have been much worse had one of my kids been exposed to that flame.

Kenmore Stove. Model # 790.95301100 Oven was shut off after cooking dinner. However, the oven did not turn off. In fact in kept increasing in temperature and getting hotter and hotter. Nothing that you could do with the controls would shut the oven off. We had to go downstairs and shut the breaker off. We did get a F1 error.
This had the potential to be a huge problem. The oven door did not lock (which happens when you self clean). The other concern is what would happen if this occurred when you were using the oven timer feature while away from the house and the temperature just kept going crazy. I noticed that there was a recall for this exact issue, but it did not include my Model # .

The product, in the report: Kenmore Glass Top Electric Range Model 790.95663201 Serial VF24406910
I have a Kenmor Elite Glass Top Electric Range. I was cooking pastries for dessert after supper on Monday evening, 5/7, and smoke started coming out of the oven. I quickly removed the the pastries from the oven and ran them outside, they were on fire but only slightly. I shut the oven off and closed the door. The house was filled with smoke and the smoke alarms were going off. I opened all the windows in the house to start to air out the house. The air began to clear and the smoke alarms shut off after about 4-5 minutes. I thought that I had maybe over cooked the pastries or that I had put them in for too long. I check the package and re-read the directions and everything had been done correctly. About 15-20 minutes after this happened, smoke started coming out of the oven again. I opened the door to see what was going on, there was a fire inside the oven. It was mostly just smoldering. I noticed that the top element inside the oven was glowing bright red, but the oven was off. I hurried downstairs and shut the power off to the range. I got the fire out and got the smoke vented out of the house. When I had everything cleaned up, I tried turning the power back on to the range. As soon as I did, the top element in the oven turned on again and was bright red in a matter of seconds. I shut the power off right away again and have not turned it on since. I’ve called Sears, Kenmore, Electrolux, and I’ve been given a bunch of phone numbers to call. I was told by one of the numbers I called that it was under recall and to call Sears at [REDACTED], but when I call that number they tell me that it is not under recall. Please help, this thing could have burned my house down. Since it’s not under a recall they will fix the range by replacing the parts that are broken with the same type of parts the range was built with and I’d be at risk of this happening again. I’m not sure what to do next, it’s going to be tough not having a range for a few days but I’m holding off on fixing it until your organization has a chance to review this occurrance.

Middle panel of upper oven door glass of our Kenmore double oven (purchased in 2011) shattered a couple of weeks ago for no apparent reason (other than the oven was on). A couple of days after it was replaced, the same thing happened to the middle panel of glass on the lower door. This will now need replacement, but obviously we are concerned about a safety issue, especially if this happens again to one of the inside or outside glass panels.

The product, in the report: Electric Cooktop
Caller purchased electric stovetop in 2005 and has had various issues with the codes over the years. Callers did not consider them a safety issue and would reset the cooktop and continue on. They had purchased a microwave & a dishwasher at the same time and had technicians come out who were unable to repair the products and in one instance the tech wanted to paint the inside of the microwave to keep the glass tray from coming off and he lost all trust in their techs.
He noticed on April 27th, 2012 while cooking dinner with family in kitchen that the left front burner had come on by itself with temperature going immediatley to high with the burner became quite hot, could not be turned off or turned down. He disconnected the circuit breaker and has been unable to use.
Caller spoke with [REDACTED] at the manufacturers regarding electric stovetop May 1.2012. There have been no injuries.
Caller is reporting as a severe burn or fire hazard. Caller would like repair at manufacturer expense.

On Saturday April 28, I baked some chicken in my oven. I turned the oven off but left the pan of chicken in the oven. I went outside and came back into the house about 30 min. later only to find my the oven broiler operating on an extremely high temperature and burning the chicken and the foil and scorching the glass baking dish. When I opened the oven all of the smoke detectors went off in the lower level of the house The oven display did not indicate that the oven was on and the only way to turn the oven off was to unplug it.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore 790.9611340A Electric Range
I have a Kenmore model #790.9611340A range oven that I purchased in the spring of 2006. On 9/28/08, it started having an issues with the top burners not heating according to the dial setting (got hot to the max, wouldn’t change unless I turned off the burner, etc.) and a couple times the oven would do the same thing. I paid $65 for a Sears technician to come out and tell me there was nothing wrong with the unit. It kept happening, and through research online I was told that I needed to replace the 1) probe (inside oven), 2) clock/timer, and 3) the overlay (part that goes over the clock/timer. All this for a mere $215.67, and I did the labor myself.
Fast forward to today, 4/17/12, and for the second time in the past two weeks, the top burners are at it again. Two weeks ago, the front left burner went as hit as possible and I fiddled with the knob, turning it off a few times, before I could get the burner to turn off. Then today, my wife called me because it simply would not turn off. She tried with the knob, turning it off and on again for 5 minutes before I told her to turn the breaker off. I’ve seen reports online about other models that take it a step further and the burners coming on by themselves, even though the knob is off and nobody is by the oven. Very scary thought. For this reason, I am purchasing a new oven (not a Kenmore, however). It’s very sad that paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars yields only a few short years of use from this appliance. I know sears won’t do a thing about this either. They just aren’t that kind of company. I’ve dealt with them on other issues in the past (including this one) and they are horrible to deal with.

The product, in the report: Four burners with one warmer Electric Range W/one of the burners being two size transformer.
Caller and husband purchased electric range in 2006 and had no problems with it until Sunday, April 15, 2012 when caller was baking.
She noted that the food had finished cooking and she prepared to open the oven and retrieve it, however when she opened the door the right side of the handle came off the oven when a screw came loose.
The caller believes that the two inch long screw is too short to hold the handle securely through the layers it has to go through first.
She sees this as a severe safety hazard because if she already had hot food in her hand and was trying to close or open the door the food could drop and she could possibly be scalded.

I was baking cupcakes and the element on the bottom got way too hot, burned the cupcakes and when I tried to shut it off - It shut off then 10 minutes later the oven was beeping and an error message of F1 appeared on the screen. The element on the bottom was on when I had already turned it off. The element was SUPER HOT! I turned the oven off again, I went to pick my daughter up from school and when I came home the oven was searing hot but no beeping and no indication that the oven was on and NO ERROR MESSAGE! I pulled the oven from the wall and unplugged it thinking that I just had to reset something and it would be ok. (The oven was so hot that when I pulled it from the wall I burned my arm on the metal of the oven. I waited four hours and plugged it back in - it was fine for about 10 minutes then it heated (within 30-40 seconds the oven was so hot I could not put my hand in the oven) I again, unplugged the oven I waited 26 hours and plugged it back in. AGAIN it heated up. I am afraid for my family and pets. This a very serious problem. What if someone had this plugged in and went to sleep, would they wake up?

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range: white, coil top, electric self-cleaning oven.
Kenmore Electric Range controls failed to work resulting in runaway oven heating. We put a turkey into the oven to cook at 325 degrees. Everything was fine for a few hours. Then we noticed the coils weren’t going on and off and the oven temp had climbed rapidly to over 500 degrees. We couldn’t turn it down. We couldn’t turn it off. It didn’t turn itself off as it is designed to do. So we shut off the power at the circuit breaker panel. If we hadn’t noticed, it would have set the house on fire. If we’d been asleep, we might have died.
We inspected the stove after it cooled. There were no physical defects seen by the resident mechanical engineer. Given that none of the control buttons worked at all, the problem seemed to be in the circuitry. We replaced the stove and have kept the electronics, but not the carcass of the malfunctioning stove.

this Kenmore Self cleaning electric range automatically turned on in clean mode while we were not in the house. Each of us thought we had turned the oven cleaning mode on but no lights indicated that. It looked as if the over was off, but it was so hot in the room. No lights or indication showed on the panels, but our kitchen was very hot, the microwave fan above the range kicked on. My plates in my cabinets above the range were warm to touch. My husband turned it off at the breaker box since the entire oven was very hot. The next day, he turned it on again so we could use the burners, and I turned them off after using. Again, the oven kicked on in clean mode while we were home. My husband again turned it off at the breaker box, and we went and bought a new range.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel Kenmore Induction Range, single oven Sears Elite Induction Range Model 79099913805 Serial VF00973769
I own a freestanding Kenmore Induction Range, purchased new about 2 years ago. Last night, I turned on the oven to heat and immediately opened it to put in a frozen meal. I had the door open about 12 inches and the outer glass on the door shattered and fell out. There were no cracks on the glass and there had been no other damage or hard bumps to the range. I’m reporting this because I read a few articles on the internet where others experience the same problem. One article said CPSC was monitoring this issue.

The product, in the report: Electric Range with coil burners.
The consumer says the left front burner, will make an eletrical zapping noise. The left front burner turns bright red to its highest and hottest power no matter what number the dial is turned to. The dial is on low of #2 the burner will act as if the dial has been turned to high or #8. It is a fire hazard and a major safety hazard to myself and young children. Sometimes it will act as if it is working right on a number setting and in the middle of cooking the burner will suddently turn “red hot” as if it has been turned to high. Also the metal body on the top of the range around and between the burners will contract and expand as the range top gets hot. The metal is very thin and not durable to hold its shape while cooking many things at once. She sees the electrical light on the back of her stove reflecting on the ceramic. The burner has had this problem for a couple of years. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told her the unit was not on recall. She says the electrical buzzing noise occurs everytime the unit is turned on and off. She also says the oven door handle has fallen off several times.

The product, in the report: Kenmore electric glass top range.
For the past few months our Kenmore Electric glass top range (Model# 790.94349700) has refused to turn off one of the burners even though the dial temperature control is set to the “off” position. On 3/29/2012, we used the range for dinner around 7:00PM (EST). This afternoon we noticed the range felt hot and the left front burner indicator was still lit! Once again, the dial control for the temperature was set to the “OFF” position and the “burner” light to the bottom right of the range was not lit. The stove just doesn’t want to shut off it’s burners. This is a huge fire hazard and and seems like it should be covered under warranty services but unfortunately the range is 3 yrs out of warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Range Model Number 79099123408 Serial Number VF53565554
My Kenmore Elite Electric Range, Model 79099123408, caught fire while cooking a ham in the oven. The ham had been cooking for nearly 2 hours (1 hour left) at 350F when the range started making a crackling sound. The panel lights turned off (with the exception of the clock) and the two left burners turned on by themselves. At the same time, smoke could be seen coming from the back of the range. A quick inspection revealed the power board was on fire. The range was pulled away from the wall and unplugged resulting in the fire losing intensity. I was able to blow on the fire between the back vent slots in the back panel and it extinguished the fire. The range was quickly removed from the house to ensure no damage would occur to the kitchen/house. Damage to the range includes the power board 10%-20% significant burning and the associated electrical wiring
Other information: Bought the range new from Sears on September 14, 2005 Sears service replaced all of the electronic control boards, including the damaged power board in June 2008

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Stove 220 connection
The consumer and his wife stated that his electric stove has a simmer select switch that had being working properly. On March 24, 2012 his wife turn on the stove and turned on the simmer switch for approximately a minute and instantly heard a popping noise and the back of her stove emitted a bright light and sparks. The consumer smelled a wire burning odor and they immediately turn the knobs to turn off the stove. In fear that it would catch on fire they unplugged the stove.
When he looked behind the stove they saw demarcation marks on the wall. He opened the back of the stove and at a first look he did not notice any damages, until he looked at the control panel that links to the simmer switch. The plastic connection on the control panel that has four wire connection had heat damage and discoloration. Next to the plastic connection is the screw that connects that control panel to the stove, this had visible heat damage consisting with an electrical arc. In general you can see the heat discoloration on the control panel.
03/25/2012- The consumers contact the retailer and they informed them that this product does not have a recall. The retailer sent a technician to repair the stove without a charge. 3/27/2012 The technician revised the stove and he informed the consumer that the circuit board needed to be replaced. The technician also informed him that he would need to pay 176 for the circuit board to be replaced. The consumer declined, informing the technician that his head quarter told him that it was free of charge.
The consumer did not contact the fire department or his insurance company because the only damage to the home was the discoloration on the wall.
The consumer believes that there is a serious problem with the way these stove is made. He is concern that although it is a serious fire hazard without a recall the retailer would not take the initiative to assist the consumer.

We were cooking a pizza and my spouse notice a burning smell coming from the oven about 10 minutes into the cooking process. She opened the stove to find that the broiler heating element was on. The baking element was not on. We could not turn off the stove until I tripped the breaker.
When I turned on the breaker and turned on the stove to BAKE the broiler came on and the bake element did not.
I waited about an hour to allow the stove to cool. I tunred on the oven and it worked correctly.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model# 790 96223409 serial#VF60626965 Stainless Steele with ceramic glass cook top
On the evening of March 21,2012 My husband headed to our kitchen for a snack. He was standing at our pantry when the outer glass pain on our Kenmore Electric Range Model #79096223409, purchased on 03/10/06, exploded outward. He & my son both were shocked. He was standing in his bare feet & the glass had shattered clear across the kitchen floor to where he was standing & beyond. He was afraid to move for fear of cutting his feet on the shards. My son tossed him a pair of shoes to slip on. There was a softball size hole in the glass & the rest of the glass was completely shattered. He said if it had happened a minute before he would have been standing right in front of the door. I called Sears & they replied that it did not have a recall on this particular model so they were not responsible. I called the Kenmore consumer number & they sent me back to Sears. Our extended warranty had expired on 03/20/11 so Sears said they would not cover any of it. I went on-line, typed in “Kenmore oven door shattering” & found this is a VERY common occurrence with the Kenmore & [REDACTED] products. There are hundreds of people whom have had the exact same experiences as we did. They have ALL contacted you, the CPSC, and with no results. Sears & Kenmore refused any responsibility. Why no recall? Because the model numbers are different. They seem to all start with 790 but end with different numbers. I’m sure it has to do with the individual style of the range. They are getting by with a terrible consumer fraud! This is dangerous! Do they have to wait until a small child is standing in front of the oven when it happens BEFORE they do something about it? I will NEVER purchase another Kenmore product or purchase ANYTHING from Sears again. I intend to spread the word about the dangers of Kenmore products. I pray it puts them out of business before someone seriously gets hurt.

I have a 5-6yr old Kenmore Elite free standing electric range (model #790.99123403). Last evening the oven was turned on and set to 375 degrees. After approximately 15 minutes of opperation, there were loud crackling and popping noises emitted from the range, black smoke began rising from behind the top user interface area, then flames shot 12-18”, reaching my vent hood. Knowing immediately it was an electrical fire, I ran to my breaker box and cut the power. I then used a kitchen fire extinguisher and directed it’s contents down behind the range. My house was full of thick, black smoke.

The oven was set to preheat at 425 to bake fish. After the beep, we put the food in the oven. After 10 minutes we checked on the food and everything was burnt. The oven had heated to a very high temperature and we were unable to shut it off. Only after switching the fuse in the basement, did the heating elements on the bottom start to cool down. As soon as the fuse is switched back on, the oven starts to heat up without being turned on. We had to unplug it and aren’t able to use the oven or stovetop. This is a fire hazard and could have started the house on fire. Luckily we didn’t leave the food unattended.

We have even had them come back on after turning the breaker off and then back on. The burners will also turn on very high by themselves. Today I was heating the oven to bake a pizza. I heated the oven to 400 degrees and put the pizza stone in to preheat. After about 8 to 10 minutes the oven exploded and was on fire. Thankfully the fire went out quick... but our Son who is two was standing directly in front of the stove (maybe only 1 to 2 feet). We are so happy our son is fine. The explosion was very loud and scary. The element now has a hole toward the back of the oven. This oven needs to be recalled!

We have a Kenmore smoothtop electric range and have been experiencing problems with the burners not shutting off, coming on without being turned on, and changes to the temperature of the cooking element without changing the dial. This evening we used the left front burner and 10 minutes after it was turned off the burner lit up to high and then shut off several times. Immediately after that, the unit began making an arcing noise and suddenly sparks began shooting out of the top left control dial while the unit was turned off. Thankfully we were home at the time and I have turned the circuit breaker off for the unit. Had we not been home there could have easily been a fire.
I have been online to check for any recall notices for our unit and while Frigidaire issued a recall notice back in 2009, our unit was not listed in the recall.

She discovered that it was still on approximately 10 mins later when she smelled the contents she had left inside to keep warm burning. She had to switch it off from the circuit breaker. There had been no prior problems with the unit.
The consumer stated that she later attempted to switch on the circuit breaker and immediately the oven came on. The control panel is now inoperable.
3/12/12 The retailer was contacted and she was advised that the range was no longer under warranty and a service rep could be sent out at a charge to her. She was also advised that if she continue to use the unit knowing that it is defective, she will be doing so at her own risk and will be liable for any damages that may incur.
The consumer feels that oven is a fire hazard and should be reported.

Caller purchased an electric range in 2009, noticed in 2010 that there were scratches on the bottom of the oven area.
February 14th, 2012, caller contacted repair for a front burner that wasn’t working properly and asked the tech about the scratches and was told that she is using the self cleaning option too often and should only use it no more than twice per year and then not for the advised three hours because it becomes too hot.. He replaced the switch on the front burner.
Around February 16th, 2012 caller cleaned her oven, cut it short at the two hours as Tech advised. She noticed that the oven was not working and contacted repair who advised that the wiring was burned up.
Tech repaired wiring on February 21st and again stated not to use self clean option more than twice a year.
Caller does not feel safe with this range, believes that if she cannot self clean the oven safely when it is designed, named self cleaning oven. She would like it to be replaced by manufacturer at manufacture expense for a model that will not become dangerously hot while cleaning.
Caller contacted Fire Marshall, [REDACTED] who advised her to contact the CPSC.

On the evening of March 11, 2012 the outer door of my Electric Range, Sears Model 79046599500 shattered. I was lifting a casserole out of the oven when once again, the door handle loosened and fell to the side. Within seconds the entire outer door of the oven just exploded, sending glass all over the kitchen and approximately 4 feet into the living room.
Fortunately I did not suffer any cuts from the exploding glass. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and I am glad I did not have children present when this happened.
This is not only a consumer safety issue, but unconcienable action on the part of Sears. They appear to not care about consumers concerns regarding this issue. This stove needs to be recalled for consumer safety issues!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Model 790.95200102 Electric Range (Serial number: VF20905230)
Here is a copy of a letter that I wrote to Kenmore on 2/22/12. I received no response from them:
I purchased a Kenmore Model 790.95200102 Electric Range (Serial number: VF20905230) on 3/12/2002. I would like to report a serious safety issue. In recent weeks, the range has been having intermittent problems where the oven would not heat properly. When set to a certain temperature (e.g., 350 degrees) the preheat light would come on, but it would never heat up to the proper temperature. Eventually after turning it off and on a few times we were usually able to get it to work after much frustration. This has been occurring with increasing regularity.
Then, Monday night a much more serious problem occurred. My wife was baking a batch of granola in the oven at 200 degrees and everything was working fine, when all of a sudden the house was filled with smoke and the smoke alarms started going off. When we came running into the kitchen we found that the oven had mysteriously turned on the broil element and had set the granola on fire. I had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames and kill the circuit breaker to turn off the range. The digital display was showing an error code (I believe it was P1 or F1).
After doing some online research, it appears that the clock/timer control board is the likely culprit. I have ordered repair parts to install from www.SearsPartsDirect.com at a total cost of more than $210 (which is outrageous), but the expected delivery of the parts is not for almost a week.
My wife asked if she could at least use the stovetop while we were waiting for the parts. I decided to see if that would work so I turned the circuit breaker back on and tried the stovetop, which appeared to be operating normally. About an hour later while we were in other parts of the house the smoke alarm started going off again. The oven had decided to turn itself back on to broil mode without anyone even touching the oven controls, and had reignited the remnants of the granola that we had not cleaned out since we were waiting for the oven to cool. Once again the house was filled with smoke causing even more smoke damage.
THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE! If we had not been at home, our house could have burned down. I believe that you should consider issuing a recall of this range to fix this problem. It is not acceptable that the range should ever turn itself on without user actions. The control circuitry should be designed such that if it ever fails it will never fail in a way that turns the unit on!
POSTSCRIPT: We replaced the clock/timer control board and the oven is now working properly, so that was apparently the culprit

I was using the simmer select feature on my glass top and all of a sudden there was a loud pop. It was like a gun shot sound. It blew the curcuit breaker and now the left front burner will not work. There is a burn mark on the simmer select control board.

Last Night 3/8/12, after cooking a pizza my wife and I were standing in the kitchen when the outside glass of the oven expolded and sent glass flying across the kitchen. Thank god no small children were in front of it when this happend. The oven had been turned off for about 5 minutes before this happened. There was an unusal hot smell during the last few minutes of cooking the pizza but there was nothing burning or spilt inside the oven. To me it was like an ammonia smell. The oven was at 425 deg. for about 15 minutes.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller purchased Electric Range at price of $1,300.00 on May 5th, 2010.
Caller, his wife and his two daughters were in the kitchen January 10, 2011 when with no warning, the glass exploded from the oven door.
He contacted the manufacturer who sent glass to his home on January 13th, 2011. February 3rd, 2011, Retail Tech came, replaced glass in door then tried to sell extended warranty to caller.
March 5th, 2012 caller’s wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner with oven oven set at 350 degrees when the glass again exploded out of oven door.
Consumer contacted retailer March 5th and 6th, 2012 who offered him a discount on replacement of glass at the rate of $100.00 off price of service call set for March 8th, 2012.
Caller does not believe that he should have to pay for this repair since this range is less than two years old.
Caller respectfully requests that due to age, circumstance and safety hazards that the manufacturer repair glass completely at their own expense instead of repeatedly trying to sell caller extended warranty which would still put expense with caller when he fully believes that there is an obvious defect.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Stove. Glass top. Digital readout. Manual Knobs for top. Push buttons for oven. Black with glass door.
I have a Kenmore stove model number 790.9601 that just exploded and caught fire. The bottom heating element exploded. My wife was alone and our house could have burned to the ground. I have owned many stoves throughout my life and not once has this happened. It was purchased in 2005. I called Sears and they are happy to send someone to my house for a minimum fee of $129, not including parts. No helpful advice for recalls or anything offered. They weren’t willing to tell me how much the part was or alternative places to get a part, as I was maybe willing to fix it myself. They had not heard of this problem before, yet I can do a simple search on google and find thousands upon thousands of reports on this very matter. I was hoping you all could provide some advice or feedback. I can’t figure out why there isn’t a recall or something being done about this problem. My wife could have died tonight while I was at work. Luckily she was close enough to the kitchen to hear it explode and shut the breaker off.

The consumer says the retailer service center replaced the circuit board after the first incident. He contacted the manufacturer on 3-3-12, who said they are sending out a voucher. The consumer says the unit was on five minutes in each occurrence.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore range, smooth cook top, almond
On 03/04/2012 cooking dinner with kenmore range 790.95354803, the broiler came on and started to burn the food. The fire alarm came on, I tried to turn of the unit and could not. the unit was flashing code “F10”. I had to unplug unit to get it to stop working. This is worry sum because 1:it came on by itself and 2:it didn’t shut itself off automatically and wouldn’t let me shut it down unless i unplugged it.
