The product, in the report: smooth top electric free standing range 30 inches wide white
1st incident happened while using the stovetop and baking in the oven. The broiler self-started and an error message went up on the control panel. The oven & broiler could not be turned off with the OFF button. Had to turn off at the breaker switch. Turned breaker on the next day and everything seemed to be working fine. That was 3 months ago. On February 1, 2013, the same problem occurred with the broiler self-starting. Could only turn off via the breaker switch.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
On February 9th I pre-heated my 1 year and two month old Kenmore oven in preparation of cooking dinner. While standing in the kitchen waiting for the signal that the oven had reached the correct temperature a series of very loud cracks and pops had begun. I looked over at the oven to discover what looked like fireworks going off inside the oven. This lasted for a minute or two before the heating element eventually caught fire. I left the oven door closed knowing that the fire would eventually be smothered out, due to the lac of oxygen. We had to call an electrician to replace several of the breakers in our electric box to the tune of hundreds of dollars because it did not just trip the breakers it blew them which then cut off power to sections of my home. The arc flash fire burned so hot that it created a hole in the bottom of the oven.
After going rounds with Sears customer service apparently there is NOTHING you can do for us because my 1 year warranty was up last month! The best they could offer me was 10% off of a new item or an $80 service technician call to quote me the repair cost! (It cannot be repaired because the arc flash blew a hole in the oven bottom!)

back left burner spontaneously heated 12 Feb 2013, thoroughly melting through a plastic/rubber product we had set on the stove. The kitchen and house filled with smoke and smelled toxic. I was able to remove the material off the stove prior to it catching fire. Damage was a destroyed cooking product and slight burns to the fingers when attempting to resolve the issue and prevent a fire. We thought we had left the burner on. We now know that the burner is turning on spontaneously as it has happened on three more occasions, including today. In fact, we cannot get the burner to shut off.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric range Model #79096019401 Black Free Standing Self Cleaning Oven
On February 1 2013 I turned my oven on, and within seconds I heard a very loud electrical pop; the power went out as it tripped the breaker. I looked back to see an ember floating the top of the stove as I also smelled and saw a wisp of smoke. After restoring power to the breaker, I removed the back panel to see what had happened, where I observed obvious damage to the control board. There were char marks above a relay, bottom right side, of timer control board. This is a Kenmore Electric Range Model #79096019401. We have contacted Kenmore and they told us to contact you. My husband [REDACTED]spoke with [REDACTED] at CPSC on 2/4/2013, he took information and stated that he would be mailing us a copy of report to review. We were to review and return so that the process could move forward from there. We have yet to receive any information, on 2/13/2013 I called back to check the status, got the number to a supervisor, left message without a call back.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth top stove
The “sure simmer” button on my stove top sparked, smoked, and no longer worked. After that the burner to which it was attached stopped working. When we opened the top to see under the burner, the wires were burned and the metal clips attaching the wires to the burner were completely melted away. This happened twice because we replaced the burner the first time. we now feel that it is a fire hazard and will not replace it. We have also had problems getting the oven to unlock after the self-clean function was completed.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric smooth top range
On Feb 10 2013, our 3 week old Kenmore model 790.92402 sn VF24234846 range turned the broiler on after a momentary power interruption while we were asleep. We smelled smoke and a heard a beeping and rushed to see what was wrong. The oven door was closed but the broiler had come on and was red hot.The display showed “F13”. We pushed the STOP button but nothing happened. We read the instructions book and pushed every button several times to no avail. Finally we shut off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes as directed in the book and reset it. We reset the clock but the broiler and bake function did not work and showed a “dr” code. The cook top burners did work.

While using our oven it overheated and caught fire. The fire was in the top back of stove in the Electronic control area. Luckily my wife was in the kitchen and contained it or it would have burnt the house down. We have had this stove for only 2 to 3 years i think and it has not been mistreated. I think that this range presents a danger to anyone who owns one.

The product, in the report: The front right burner heats to temperatures other than the one selected. On mine, I can’t cook above 2 because the burner heats to high at that setting.
I recently heard on tv that some smoothtop stoves turn on spontaneously. This didn’t concern me as I’ve had a different issue. Mine heats to a temperature other than the one selected. I looked up recalled stoves on this website and saw the 2009 Annual Report about this issue. I called Sears and they said my model was not on the recall list.
Please let me know if my Kenmore smoothtop stove is on a recall list. If not, please add this model to the list of recalled smoothtops.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range
While pre-heating my oven, I heard a cracking, sizzling noise and turned around to see fire and smoke coming from the top panel of my electric range. I immediately used the stop/clear function and it shut down the range. Had I not been near by, I’m afraid the fire would have damaged the walls and cabinets and possibly burned down the house. Sears sent a repairman but the range was beyond repair. The repairman noted the pristine condition of the range and said that he has seen the same thing happen to many of these same brand ranges. The fire had damaged the oven relay on the control board plus other controls that were undetermined. This range was purchased in 2004 and had been kept in excellent condition. Apparently, this has been a problem with this product and I cannot understand why consumers are not alerted about this as a possibility by Sears. This was very scary and expensive. Consumers have the right to be aware of such a hazard.

The other evening we heard a loud crackling noise coming from our kitchen. I went to investigate nod found nothing. A couple of days later I opened the oven and found the source of the notice - a broken glass door in our oven. While we have had the oven awhile,I was very surprised the door glass broke while not in use. I am only happy that we did not experience the exploding glass that others have reported.
I read the statement that Sears posts on all these reports “Business Comments: (1/15/2013) Sears Holdings takes product safety issues very seriously. We investigate each CPSC database incident report. We encourage our customers to provide additional information about incidents to our Customer Care Network, by calling 800-549-4505.” I called the number only to find no option to provide additional information. I selected option 3 and told the operator what I wanted to do. He informed me that I’d called the wrong number and that I needed to call and inquire about recalls at 888-949-7181. There was no answer and she returned to tell me that office was closed and gave me a different number to call 800-659-7026. I will call on Monday.

Last night, the outer glass door on our Kenmore 790 Electric Range just shattered and shot into a million little pieces of safety glass. The oven was off and had not been used for 24 hours prior and was at room temperature. Nothing was placed on top of the range and nothing struck the front glass. No injuries have yet to have been taken but I am continuing to find pieces of glass throughout the kitchen, dining room, and living room.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore Electric Stove with a smooth top.
Have owned a Kenmore Electric stove since it was purchased from Sears in 2007. With in the first year the front left, large burner only turns on high. No matter what setting/number you put it on. I have experienced times when it does not shut off. The only large burner that works just today made a loud popping noise an a spark when I turned it on. It seemed fine afterwards but I do not think it gets as hot as it did before. I have called in the past and was told because my exact model was not recalled (even though it has the same problems as the others) I would have to pay to have it fixed.

Sears Ohio River Road Wheelersburg, Ohio 45694 Phone: 740-574-0444 ATTENTION:[REDACTED], MANAGER EMAIL: [REDACTED]
I am writing concerning my Kenmore Electric Range model #: 790.96012400, Serial #: VF50526575, which has been faulty for several months. I purchased this range February 12, 2005, from Sears in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
After several attempts to fix this range, which first the bottom element caught fire and was replaced. At the time I called the 800 # to order a new element, the operator never spoke of any recalls. After replacing the element which she mailed me, every so often for the past several months when using just the oven - it would blow breakers. The oven is the only thing I was using at this time. Then after I had a repair man look at it and fix an electrical problem in the back of the stove (had to pull it out from the wall), we thought it was fixed. But, while trying to bake some snack crackers for Christmas, it overheated, burnt the crackers within 5 minutes (the recipe called for a baking time of 15-20 minutes) and the stove started beeping, a F1 came up and the oven luckily turned off. It was EXTREMELY HOT! We were just glad it didn’t cause a fire. I can use the stove - but I would not ever turn the oven on again! I called the 800 # for parts again, told them my situation and they said I need to replace the Electronic Control Board, which would cost $119.17 (before shipping charges). Again, the gentleman was very nice, but did not say anything about any recalls on this appliance. I started thinking all this was very odd due to the oven only being 7 years old, and my [REDACTED] oven I had before had lasted 30 years. Quite a difference! So, I started searching the internet to see if anyone else had experience the same problems that I have. Wow, have they! I found several stories relating to mine. So, here is my question - is there a recall on this oven - what can I expect to happen?
Please reply to me as soon as possible. I have already gone through Christmas - no fun not being able to bake any Christmas goodies - and it was a good thing I could use the top of the stove, I also made use of my [slow cooker] and baked our Christmas ham on our outside gas grill.
I will be waiting to hear from you.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30 inch electric range smooth glass top.
I turned on the stove to preheat it to 350 degrees. Within 5 minutes my wife checked it and yelled that the stove was on fire like fireworks. She turned off the control on top. When I saw it, the firework effect was finishing and the heater element inside (bottom) of the stove was glowing like melted steel. We could smell the smoke coming from the vent. 5 minutes later, when I cracked opened the stove it was full of smoke. Later, when I inspected the heating element, it was no longer smooth but pock marked and melted in areas. We were thinking before that electric ranges were safer than gas. We are looking for new stove now and wondering which model is safe.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range 790-9742
Kenmore Electric Range Model 790.9742 which was purchased in April of 2010.Oven racks collapse and fall during cooking process due to defective oven liner which warps and bows with heat. Racks fall whenever items such as casseroles or roasters are being cooked because racks no longer fit when the oven heats up. I have had a dutch oven collapse during the cooking process after being in the oven for 2 hours. The racks fall off the side grids because the oven liner wall bows from extended heat. On Thanksgiving I had a hot casserole dish fall on my forearms when I pulled out the rack slightly to check on it. The rack collapsed and the casserole dish slid out on my arms which luckily were covered with long oven mitts.I had to scream to my husband who was outside to pick the casserole off my forearms. I paid over $1000 for this stove. Sears denies there is a problem with this product, yet I see the problem everywhere on the internet including this site, not only Kenmore, but other brands Sears carries such as [REDACTED], etc. WHen I call sears, they say they have never seen this happen. The repairman and some other salemen I have talked to at other retail appliance stores have told me that they HAVE heard about this problem many times. The oven liner is not a removeable part. It is part of the oven, therefore it is not repairable nor replaceable. Sears refuses to do anything for me as I have escalated the complaint all the way up to the Executive office who denies the problem as well. They have offered me a 20% discount off a new stove. I don’t find this to be acceptable. This is a MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE and people have been burned and I will too if I continue to use this oven.I basically have an oven I can’t use and it is not my fault. Evidently the steel used on the liner of this oven and many others Sears carries is of INFERIOR QUALITY that BOWS and WARPS over TIME with heat.I was told this would have occured sooner by the repairman had I have used the Oven CLEANING FEATURE WHICH CAUSES EXTREME HEAT and would have warped the liner even worse than it is.These ovens need to be on recall and Sears needs to take responsibility and stop lying to consumers and telling them that the problem does not exist.

The product, in the report: Kenmore black and white electric range, ceramic glass cook top, self cleaning oven. Electronic oven controls with clock and timer, individual radiant element control knobs, hot surface indicator light, element on indicator light.
I had used the oven for approximately 1 hour at 400 degrees making two batches of nachos. There was a 15-20 minute time between the two batches. There was no spill, drip or any mess what-so-ever on the element from the nachos. When the second batch was done, I turned off the oven. A little while later, I see smoke coming from the back of the stove which happens when I use the broiler. I open the oven and the element is bright red and the oven is very hot. I check to see if I had turned the oven off and yes I had. I push off/cancel again and the oven beeps several times with f1 flashing on the panel. I quickly get out the manual and read about the f1 indicator. It suggests I push cancel and reprogram oven. If that doesn’t work, I should record fault number and contact Sears for service. First of all, while I am waiting on the phone for Sears service, my oven is getting about as hot as it can without catching fire. Then,LOC starts flashing on the display panel. I close the oven door and it locks which is probably a good thing. Less chance of fire. Still no Sears on the line so I hang up. It finally dawns on me to trip the circuit. The scary part of this is that there was no indication that the oven was malfunctioning until I saw the smoke and pushed off again. If I had just stayed in the other room eating nachos with everyone else who knows what could have happened. We have tried turning on the circuit again and the oven just heats up, very hot, all the while indicating nothing. Very dangerous! I have seen on YouTube that many people have experienced the same thing. This product should definitely be recalled.

The product, in the report: Smooth-top electric range
My wife was using the range on the lowest setting late in the evening and left the kitchen for a few minutes. When she returned the range was on high heat and contents of the pan was on fire. She was not able turn the range off, and it remained on high heat until the power to the range was disconnected. When the power was reconnected in the morning the range appeared to operate normally, but the cooktop was permanently discolored.
Safety concern: The range setting can spontaneously change, potentially causing a fire and burns. This incident occurred at about 1:00 AM and I was sleeping. We consider ourselves lucky to have caught the fire while it was small, and confined to the contents of the pan. However, we are reluctant to use the range because the controls are not reliable and potentially dangerous.

Blue sparks from behind back panel of Kenmore Electric range. On one occasion the front right burner powered onto “High” when the dial was turned to a lower setting. On a later occasion, the front right burner turned to “High” and stayed that way despite the setting on the knob. The only solution was to power off the range, and remove the switch from behind the backpanel.
Upon further investigation of the failed switch (one of these http://www.amazon.com/Kenmore-Range-Infinite-Switch-316436001/dp/B001DPT2QY), it appears that there is a little pressure sensitive conductive pad that carries current to the element (over 2000 watts). In my case the metal contacts shorted out and caused the conductive pad to fuse the two contacts together permanently. The result was that the front right element was permanently powered on at the highest setting,
This is an extreme fire hazard and these products should be recalled for repair immediately.

Sears Kenmore Electric Stove Model # 790.46781900, Serial # NF00626101, Manufacture Date February 2010. Glass door front, part # 318403502 shattered completely after the door was closed after baking a cake at 350 degrees. Internet search revealed this is a very common problem. It appears the glass does not have a proper frame to support the structure as it uses only a silicone type adhesive to attached it to a frame which flexes causing the glass to stress.

We own a Kenmore Elite range Model # 79099123400. On or about January 3, 2013 my wafe was baking something when the range begin to smoke and then had an arc of fire shoot out the back. The smoke charred the wall and caused the circuit breaker to jump. The range continued to smoke and we unplugged it from the outlet. The damage done to the range was in the neighborhood of $1,000 causing any repairs to not make financial sense. The range was purchased from Sears in the fall of 2006. I understand a recall was issued for the turn knob style of this range. Ours was not a turn knob style but a display push pad model. Should that model be included within the recall?

I turned on my oven and set tempurature to 275 degrees. after it beeped to indicate ready, i put in a rack of ribs. After about 10 minutes I began to smell smoke. I went to the kitchen and found smoke pouring from the oven vent, and the broiler, which I had not turned on, was on high! I pushed the off button repeatedly but the range would not turn off. I had to go to the breaker panel and pull the breakers to shut the range down. This thing could have set my house on fire and i’m really concerned that this product could kill someone.

One of the burners is malfunctioning in a very dangerous way. It does not always heat at the temperature requested. I turned my knob to “Lo” and instead the heat element went to high and burned my food. Another time, I turned the element off completely and the element did not turn off but instead went up to high showing a full red burner. I noticed there are several other Kenmore ranges with this problem but my serial # was not one of the recalled ones.

The consumer says he was heating a teapot of water. The large right rear burner blew into flames. he says it looked like a blow torch. He says it actually looked like someone took a welding iron to it or tack weld the bottom of the teapot.
Luckily he was able to reach from the side to turn the burner off. If no one had been in the room at the time it would have definitely set the house on fire.
He contacted the retailer/manufacturer who did not seem to know who he should talk to.
UPDATE: Consumer says the oven now does not work at all. They bought a new range. This appliance i sboth dangerous and defective.

Incident happened on a Kenmore Elite Free Standing Range, Model# 790.97103010, Serial # VF04146460. Less than 10 minutes after starting the oven and the front element, we hear a popping sound and see black smoke coming from the top back panel, the panel then catches fire. I rush downstairs to turn off the dedicated circuit breaker that controls the stove. Even after a fire this circuit breaker was not tripped, which is troubling. We pulled the stove out from under the cabinets, unplugged the unit and let the fire burn out. Our house is filled with a terrible smell that in nauseating from the fire and black smoke.

• Thursday, January 3, 2013,at approximately 4:15 P.M. (Central Standard Time), I was preparing to make a pot of soup. I decided that since it was a cold day that I would run the self-cleaning cycle on the oven. I set the cycle and an error message should up that said “dr”. So, I placed my hand on the handle to push the door closed and as I did the glass in the oven exploded! Note: the cleaning cycle never came on. Glass flew twelve to fifteen feet in all directions. It was in my dining room; eat in kitchen, living room, countertops and window seals. I called a neighbor to come and keep my little dog out of the area so his paws wouldn’t be cut by the glass. As I looked at what has just happened I was devastated. I realized my life had just been spared. Then I thought of my grandchildren. Had one of them pushed on the oven handle they would have been the correct height; that the glass would have cut them to shreds. • Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 5:10 P.M., I called Sears repair service (1- 800-488-1222) and spoke with [REDACTED] (employee #[REDACTED]). I was informed that they couldn’t do anything but set up a service call. I said “I’m not paying for a service call for someone to tell me that the glass in my oven door exploded”. I was then transferred to Sears Customer Relations. 5:19 P.M. [REDACTED] (1-800-479-6351) with Sears Customer Relations was able to pull up my records and informed me because the range was out of warranty there was nothing they could do. So, she transferred me to [REDACTED], at Kenmore. (1-888-KENMORE). [REDACTED] pulled up the records and said that Frigidaire was the actual manufacturer. • 5:51P.M. I was transferred to [REDACTED] (1-800-374-4432) with Frigidaire. [REDACTED] informed me that it wasn’t Frigidaire’s responsibility and she would transfer me back to Kenmore so they could set up a service call. I informed her I didn’t want to set up a service call that I wanted a new range because I was afraid of the one that had exploded. I had cut off the circuit breaker and would not be using the range anymore and wanted it out of my house. • Friday, January 4, 2013, 9A.M., Filed a report with [REDACTED] at the US Consumer Product Safety (1-800-638-2772), report #[REDACTED]. • Friday, January 4, 2013, 2:28 P.M., I contacted [REDACTED], Manager (731- 660-2290) Sear’s Store, Jackson, TN. Mr. [REDACTED] stated that if the range was under warranty he could replace it. But, since it wasn’t he wasn’t sure what his options were. • Monday January 7, 2013, 10:00 A.M., I went online to find Sears Corporate Headquarters. There I found a phone number for Sears Customer Relations (1-800-479-6351). Monday, January 7, 2013, 10:30 A.M. called Sears Customer Relations and spoke with [REDACTED]. She made a report of the incident. Upon completion she transferred me to Sedgwick Insurance (1-800-727-0121). • Monday, January 7, 2013, 11:00 A.M. Consumer was cooking for about 20 mins and the stove was turned off. The consumer noticed the heat coming from the kitchen and saw the right front burner was still lit. The next day the consumer plugged range back into the outlet and the burner immediately powered on. The consumer unplugged the range and it has been unplugged and untouched since.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Ultrabake Smoothtop Electric Range
Re: Kenmore Ultrabake Smoothtop Electric Range Model No.: 92002102 Serial No.: RN0226865
I am writing to request repair or replacement action on the above range. It was purchased new on 2/2/2003. This first unit delivered 2/6/2003 was refused because of visible damage. The second unit was accepted on 2/11/2003. The first service call was the following week, 2/22/2003. The first service person could not repair the range so a second person showed up on 3/6/2003 and replaced the control board for the oven control. The range worked fine for several years.
After several years the top burners started heating in an uncontrolled way; sometimes seemingly turning themselves off and sometimes heating at the highest level even when set on low. The most recent problem occurred on 11/4/2012. While baking a chicken at 350 degrees F and with about 20 minutes more to cook the food began to burn and the juices in the pan popping and sizzling. We opened the oven door and found the broiler on full blast even though it was not programmed to be on. We removed the chicken and cancelled the cook cycle. The oven element went off and the broiler element stayed on.
I have 35 years of experience in safety electronics so knew my next step would be to try and reset the control unit. I turned off the power at the circuit breaker, waited two minutes and then repowered the unit. The broiler came back on but would not shut off at the control panel. I tried resetting the unit one more time by shutting off the power at the circuit breaker for five minutes with the same results; the broiler would not shut off with the control panel. I turned the power off for the night for safety and again retried it the next morning with the same result; the broiler would not shut off with the control panel. In order to at least be able cook some food I have removed the broiler element and the control panel seems to be operating the baking element satisfactorily. However, this is not a solution.
After checking the Internet I’ve found many postings of people with the identical problems I’ve detailed (a very recent posting is on Saferproducts.gov) but no recall has been made for this model or serial number. Thankfully we were inside when this unit malfunctioned or it could have burned down the house! If we were sleeping and the unit turned itself on (which some of the Internet postings have detailed) we could be dead! Is Kenmore waiting for people to die before they remedy this defective and dangerous unit?
I will forward this letter to as many consumer protection groups as I can for their review and, hopefully, positive action. In the meantime I will keep my copy and records off-site, not at home in case the stove burns the house down!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Cook top stove
I preheated the stove and then started cooking potatoes. All of a sudden I heard a crackling popping sounds and looked over the sparks were flying from behind the stove along with black smoke. My husband was able to quickly shut the breaker off, thank goodness. We pulled the stove out and the big cord looked fine accept one little wire looked melted. He took the big metal back off and we found that all of the wires and the main terminal was complete melted, so wires were touching each other. The exact model number is 790.96214408. It looks like there are been several problems with this.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 30” Double Oven Freestanding Smooth Cooktop Electric Range
I purchased a Kenmore Elite 30” Double Oven Freestanding Smooth Cooktop Range 11/16/08, Model # 665.98019801, Serial # 11311098PA. This model number was provided to me through a Sears “chat” about parts - the number on the part is 2298019.
Wednesday evening, 12/26/12, I heard a random beeping. Upon investigating to find the source of the beeping, it was discovered that the broiler on the bottom oven was on Hi. After turning it off, I thought perhaps I bumped the button to turn it on while wiping down the stove, even though that didn’t seem likely since it had never happened before.
The next morning (Thursday, 12/27/12), when I came downstairs, I immediately noticed a “hot” smell like something was burning. The air was very acrid and my eyes were burning. I once again discovered the broiler unit was on Hi, and blazing away! I pushed the button to turn it off and opened windows and doors trying to get things cooled down. Everything around the stove was so hot, I was worried something might catch fire.
Baffled and scared, I went to the computer in the next room and started searching the internet for broilers coming on spontaneously and was horrified to find that there had been a recall for the smooth cooktop burners coming on by themselves, but not for the broilers doing it, EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE MANY, MANY REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING!
While I was at the computer, I heard the broiler click and turn back on again, so I went back in the kitchen and turned it off. This continued happening at shorter and shorter intervals until I had no choice but to turn off the breaker in order to keep the broiler from turning on.
I did some more research and concluded this may have happened because a Broiler Relay switch was stuck and needed replaced. So I called Sears to ask about repair and to find out if they had any other reports of this happening with this particular model. Their lack of customer service was appalling; the information I finally received was that it was not part of a recall and I would have to pay for the repair. I was concerned that since this did not seem to be an isolated incident but Sears was not recognizing that there was a problem, the repair would have been to replace the failed part with the same thing, possibly with a much more catastrophic outcome.
I telephoned the local Sears Hardware Store where I purchased the range, but could not even get through to someone in the Appliance Department.
Next, I checked the website for Sears parts to find out how much the part cost and if it had been replaced by a new part. When I could not locate my model, I used their “chat” function to get some help. Their response was to try to sell me a broiler element using a model number that was “close”. After much insisting, I was finally given a model number that allowed me to search for schematics / diagrams for my actual range and found the part runs close to $300! It did not indicate that this part was anything different than what was already in the unit, so I chose to not go this route.
This is not a cheap range. As a matter of fact, it was my dream range and I bought it the same place I have purchased almost every other appliance my whole life - Sears. While it is hard to accept that the Sears I knew and loved is gone, it is even harder to believe that they know about and refuse to be responsible for an issue with their product that could have cost me my home, my family, and my life.
Others need to know about this problem and that it could happen. I am purchasing a new range - not from Sears - as I do not feel this range is safe or replacing the part will make it so.

On Dec. 30,2012 my kenmore stove began making loud cracking and popping sounds after I had turned on the warm and hold element. The stove then caught fire. The back was burnt. The mother boards destroyed extensive electrical damage to the stove. Sears insists on repairing where I want a new one. They will repair with rebuilt boards as they do not have new parts. Presently the CPSC has a number of these stoves on recall ours is not inculded but should be expanded to include this model as well. Our model number is 790.96613402 purchased in 2004. I have read many stories with similiar results from this Sears model. I would like to see the recall expanded to protect others and myself. I am thankful that my husband and I sat in the kitchen to have coffee while we kept breakfast warm waiting for our two duaghters to get up. Had it been a weekday or my older daughter making herself breakfast perhaps this letter would have a tragic ending instead of a concerned ending that requires the CPSC to further expand this recall to ensure the safety of all consumers who who have bought these stoves, one tragic result is one too many.

Soup was being heated up on our Kenmore electrical stove in a [REDACTED] pot. Only the front left burner was in use. It was on high and the pot was on the stove for about 1 minute when there was a loud boom and large flames. We doused the fire quickly. We turned the knob to the off position but the red surface light still indicated it was on so we then turned off the power to that electrical outlet. The pot ended up with a hole on the bottom where it appears the burner cut through. The burner itself was destroyed, it looks like it just burst/popped. We purchased the burner from Home Depot about 2 years ago. The food was not burned or scorched just splattered on the wall. No other area of the pot was burned except for that section with the hole. Then we noticed on the right side of the stove near the rear burner, there was a black burn line. That is where the electrical wires run. We cannot lift up the stove top, it is burned shut on the rear right side. The burn line is not on the stove top itself but rather down the right side. It is about 1-2 inches in length.

The consumer went in the kitchen to check for a dish in the oven. As he pulled on the handle the glass exploded. The glass went everywhere. The entire kitchen floor was covered with black glass. About 11 or 12 shards of glass stuck in his legs below his knees and in his hands. The consumer managed to get all of the bleeding stopped after about 45 minutes to an hour. There was no damage in the kitchen. He did not require medical attention.
(12/31/2012) The consumer contacted Kenmore. He was told that it would cost him $279 for a repair.

The product, in the report: Kenmore white freestanding electric range with glass cooktop and electronic oven controls. Model 665-95802000
Kenmore Electric Range Model Number:665-95802000 has a problem with the broiler element relays sticking on and not turning off until the power to the range is terminated with the circuit breaker. Pressing off/cancel button on controls does not fix problem. You can sometimes bump the panel where the relays are located and get them to release and switch off. This has happened on at least one other occasion for a total of two incidents with this range. There are many reports of similar problems with various Kenmore ranges like this. I couldn’t find a recall on this model but I wanted to add it to a list in case enough units had problems to investigate. A burner until that won’t turn off is a fire hazard that can lead to loss of or property.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric Range Model #665.92014102
We have A Kenmore Electric Range model # 665.92014102 there is a major safety problem with this product that causes a fire. For the second time in about 4 years this range has went into broil mode by itself and cannot be turned off, it gets so hot that what ever is in the oven will catch on fire and fill the house with smoke, if you don’t turn off the breaker in time the house could go up in flames, The first time this happen I told Sears about the incident and it was treated as it was no big deal, I had the repair man come out to look at it, he said it was the control board and it would need to be replaced, that it is a common problem with this range, I had the repairs made at a cost of more then $200 to me. Now it has happened again, and after looking on the web I see that this is a common problem for lots of people with these Ranges, this is very dangerous something needs to be done. When a product fails it should not turn on, it should just not work.

The product, in the report: Stove - oven -(Range)
My wife had used the oven earlier today to bake some cakes, after a while she walked into the kitchen and she noticed the oven was on. (She had turned it off earlier) She observed that there were none of the stove lights on indicating that the stove was on. She saw that the broiler, that she had not used baking a cake, was on. She tried to turn off the broiler controls even though they were indicating that they were off. She called me into the kitchen and I observed that the broiler was on with no electronic lights indicating that it was turned on. I tried using the controls, but they just lit up as normal and turned off as normal, but the broiler stayed on. Thank goodness we were home. Un attended I can see a very dangerous if not fatal flaw with this unit. The only way I could turn off the oven was by turning off the breaker switch at the electrical panel. I pulled the unit away from the wall to look behind it, but did not notice anything that may have been shorted out. I tried turning back on the oven after it had cooled down, but the broiler came on and would not shut off until I tripped the electrical breaker in the main electrical panel. I found the oven’s model number and started a search on your site for a possible recall. The oven’s information is as follows: Sears Kenmore range, Model # - 790.95214200 I found where you had another kenmore model number listed - 790.99012 - 790.99013 and it stated that depending on the model, the surface heating elements can: 1) turn on spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off; or, 3) heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers. I contacted the sears hotline but was told that no recall had been issued for my model. I explained to them everything that had happened (as I have reported to you in this letter) but they were not interested in with my concerns. I informed them that I was going to report this problem to CPSC but all the lady said was ok thank you, goodbye. I am a retired Fire fighter and something like this really disturbs me. We could have placed leftovers in the oven overnight and the result could have been a tragic fire possibly resulting in a fatality. As of this statement to you my kenmore Range is unplugged!!! Please look into this as there may be others out there with the same problem that may occur or has already occurred and no one knows what started the fire!! Thank you for your attention in this matter. Please feel free to contact me anytime about this either through email of call my cell phone at [REDACTED] Thank you, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range Oven (Model: 66592002102 Serial: RP0327286)
I have a Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range Oven (Model: 66592002102 Serial: RP0327286) purchased in 2003; on Christmas Day 12/25/2012 after dinner was prepared I turned the oven off and enjoyed dinner with my family and friends. It started getting really hot in the house and we figured it was just from all of the cooking and family filling our home. We opened two windows in our kitchen and went back to having fun. It continued to get even hotter in the downstairs of our home. I then looked over our kitchen island at the stove to see that it was glowing orange. I looked at the digital display on the oven and it was turned off. I walked over and pushed the off button numerous times to no avail. I quickly went to my garage and shut the breaker off. The disaster was averted for now. The next day I turned the oven breaker back on to see what would happen. The oven screen turned on with a (PF) code which is normal anytime you have a Power Failure. I cleared that code by pushing the OFF/Cancel button on the control panel. The oven was never turned on however, the element began to glow bright orange. I left the breaker on for just a few minutes and in that short time the oven temperature was extremely hot.
I contacted Sears about this issue and they said that even though it was a similar problem to another recall that because my Model/Serial number was not included then I would just have to pay for a repair.
They further told me to contact Kenmore directly because they would have to deal with the safety issue. After speaking to [REDACTED] (Employee #[REDACTED]) I was told to contact Sears because they would have to deal with the safety issue.
What they want to do to resolve the issue is to come put a new part in the oven. The same part that faulted out this time in a manner that causes a huge safety issue. I am not comfortable having a new part put in this oven if I have not been reassured that it has been redesigned so that this type of fault could not happen again. I have a family of six and do not feel safe going to sleep at night with an oven that could turn itself to high heat at any point.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range. Stainless Steel, Flat Top Range.
I was using the oven portion of a Kenmore electric range. I had been preparing to cook dinner for that evening for my daughter and husband. The oven was preheated and I had just put the chicken into the oven. After the appropriate amount of time for the chicken to cook I called my daughter into the kitchen and began to take the food out of the oven. As soon as I placed my hand upon the over door glass exploded outward from the glass covering of the oven door. The glass went several feet away from the door spraying near my daughter and the family dog. The glass continued to break out slowly over several minutes and on occasion fell out in large chunks. Thankfully no one was injured but this incident could have caused injury to myself, my daughter, or the family pet. There was no warning that came with the product that this type of accident could occur. I was following appropriate usage guidelines and the product should not behave this way when used as intended. I would hope that in the future no one would be subject to exploding glass oven doors whilst cooking dinner for their family.

My Kenmore electric range Model # 790.96112408 has several times had the left front burner overheat and then fail to turn off with the control knob. The only way to turn it off was to unplug the stove. The surrounding counter top was very hot to the touch. I have read reports of others who have had this problem who also had the burner turn on by itself. I am very concerned about the fire hazard this presents. It seems the only way to safely use this range is to not use the left front burner and to turn off the breaker when the stove is not in use.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Slide-In Electric Range
One and one half years ago, I purchased from Sears, a Kenmore Elite Slide In Electric Range when my daughter got married at home. Since the beginning, the oven racks have collapsed, unpredictably, with or without weight, with any movement.
Today, on Christmas Day, 2012, the rack fell holding a roast. One month ago, on Thanksgiving Day, the rack fell holding a turkey. On Thanksgiving, the rack also fell holding something as light weight as a pie.
I am now looking forward to the birth of my first grandchild and am concerned about the safety of the oven for family events.
This defect in the product design should be corrected by the manufacturer immediately.
The product should be recalled since there are many reported incidents online about this particular product, including third degree burns. Online accounts indicate that Sears is not forthcoming in addressing this serious and extremely dangerous issue with its product.

The product, in the report: Kenmore flat top electric range
My wife was baking cookies in our seven year old Kenmore electric range and the oven temperature controller failed with the heat output locked at 100%. The controller indicated a failure but the heat remained on and the temperature increased uncontrolled. The oven gave a strong vinegar smell and the only way to stop the oven was to shut off the main power breaker. I put in a thermometer to see how hot the stove got but the temperature was higher than the sensor could read (higher than 600 degrees F)
I reset the breaker and the oven stayed off but if I turned on the oven the temperature once again ran away until I shut the breaker off. If this failure occurred when no one was home I am sure
I checked the cpsc website and did not see a recall for the model range I have.

Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 17, 2012, sent to the company Jan 7, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 22, 2013
The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Electric Slide In Range
I have a two year old Kenmore Elite oven/range in which the oven racks fall, causing hot foods and liquids to fall and splash. It appears that the oven walls/liner have bowed, causing the racks to have insufficient support. Two members of our household have been burned by this oven to date as a result of the racks falling. I contacted Sears/Kenmore to report the problem on 12/11/2012. I was told that the product was out of it’s one year warranty and, therefore, not covered. After seeing numerous reports from other consumers on the same and similar models with the same dangerous problem, I continued to pursue the Customer Solutions department as this appears to be a manufacturers defect. A Sears tech was sent to my home to inspect the unit and determined that in fact the unit is defective, that the liner suffered from “thermal expansion”, and deemed the unit, in writing, “Unsafe to use”. Sears/Kenmore Customer Relations first told me that the unit would be replaced and referenced a five year warranty that included “thermal shock”, but later retracted and advised that the actual manufacturer (LG) only covers the glass cooktop for thermal shock. Kenmore/Sears has previously acknowledged reports of this identical problem on this very website, yet the company offers no safe resolution or repair, and I am financially unable to replace the unit with a safe one.

I am a Baking&Pastry student at Savannah Technical College, and also recently received my Culinary Art Degree. I was preparing dinner for my family when I tried to turn on the oven light, it would not work so I thought something was wrong so i backed away and looked in and out of know where the oven glass shattered into a million pieces. This is very unfortunate with christmas being right around the corner, and my mothers family coming to visit which we hopefully get a see once every two years. We were told the earliest someone could come out would be December 24th which is Christmas Eve. My mother spoke with numerous people first she spoke to a represetative from sears that had never heard of this incident before, and that the manger would give her a call tomorrow. At this point she was frantic and distraught at the thought of me getting injured. While she was on the phone I researched mulitple cases of this happening that even made the news. Next she spoke to a kenmore warrenty department representative that had never heard of this even and apologized for it happening. Next she spoke to a representative to set up an apointment unfortunately we were told they could not get to us until December 24th, but they would try there best to get this resolved sooner. Even though our warrenty is not out until March my mother fears there could another accident in the future, and someone in my family could easily get hurt. We believe the public should be well aware of this happening and be warned. We appreciate your assitance in this matter.

The product, in the report: Kenmore range 790.96011407 Serial Number VF74646217 316402707BLK listed on back
We have the exact same situation listed in report #20110802-3C829-2147476614. We have been struggling with this stove for years. The burner comes on and off whenever it chooses to. The temperature goes much higher than it is supposed to. If you walk away from the stove for a moment your food will be burned. We have burned many meals on this stove.
You can turn the stove off and the burner will stay on and get hotter and hotter for hours until you go behind it and unplug it. Sometimes you will cook on one burner and the other one starts going. It gets so hot that you cannot hold your hand within a foot of it.
There was apparently a recall for another Kenmore stove that did the exact same thing, but when I called Kenmore they told me they ‘were delighted to inform me that my stove was NOT part of the recall.’ I said, how can that be, when it’s doing exactly the same thing as the recalled stove. No offer of help was given.
My wife called again today, and was told they would charge us $75 just to come look at it.
If there were children in our house, someone would’ve been badly injured by now. This stove is dangerous.
The other recall is listed here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09333.html It is clearly the exact same problem. I am unsure why Kenmore refuses to help us.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Glass-top Stove model number 790.96009600
I have a Kenmore glass-top stove that was in our Condo when we bought it. It has a problem where the right-front burner won’t shut off, and on occasion, comes on by itself
I called the Sears Customer care network phone number listed and the stove is not recalled and they won’t do anything about it.
They gave me a number for Kenmore [REDACTED] but the number was disconnected.
I found another number for Kenmore, [REDACTED]. They could schedule a repair, but not for free, so I had them transfer me to the warranty person who checked the model and serial number. The range is not subject to a recall. I asked him who the manufacturer was, and he said [REDACTED].
He did give me the manufacturer’s number though, [REDACTED].
However, [REDACTED] said it’s not their model, 790.96009600, and gave me another Sears Recall number, [REDACTED].
Who put me on hold, but came back and said that model number is not on recall. He checked and said they could not repair it for free unless the manufacturer had a recall on it. He said the manufacturer was Frigidaire. The number he gave for them was [REDACTED].
I called that number and the recording referred me to [REDACTED] to speak to a representative.
I was put on hold for a while, and when I finally spoke to someone, they said that once the Kenmore name is on the appliance, they are no longer obligated and gave me the first Kenmore number I referenced above.
Is there something that can be done about this travesty? I live in a condo unit, Seybold Flats, that had to have extensive fire mitigation, sprinklers, etc, installed because of the Seybold bakery building next door, which is around 100 years old, and is a fire risk. And all of the units had this same or similar stove installed.

Kenmore Elite Smoothtop Range. Two days ago on 12.09.2012 after cooking lunch and turning the burners off, the front left burner turned on by itself and would not turn off. We pressed the off button multiple times but it would not work. We then tried to change the temp setting to low but it did not work either. We eventually had to unplug the entire range to get it to turn off.
I have called Sears and scheduled a repair for 12.14.2012 between 1pm and 5pm EST. I also looked up to see if the product had been recalled and it has not at this time. I also tried calling directly to Sears and Kenmore recall numbers and they say it is not recalled. I have to pay for the repairs myself. This product is defective and should be recalled. I should not have to pay for a repair to a defective product.

The product, in the report: This is a Kenmore glass top model 790.92303012.
We bought a house exactly a year ago. The oven had a strange smell when turned on like plastic burning but nothing that we could see. Thanksgiving last month the oven had a runaway temperature issue that popped up. We followed the instructions from the manual to unplug and replug in the oven. It appeared to be ok and started functioning again. Then a couple days ago it stopped working. We opened up the backpanel to see what part might be having a problem and discovered that the plastic had melted. [REDACTED] This explains why it smelled of burning plastic. This oven is only 1 year old and it’s a good thing that it stopped working as this could have burned down the house. I look online and I see a number of people who have had similar unresolved issues. This is dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed to continue.

Product: Kenmore Electric Oven/Range Model: 790.95301100 Serial: VF13410726 Problem: Oven would not shut off
I turned the oven on to preheat and cook a meal as usual and after the meal was finished I turned the oven off to go eat. About 30 minutes later I noticed a strong burning smell then my oven started to beep. I Went in to the kitchen and noticed my oven was smoking and beeping and displaying a error code on the display of “F1” I opened the oven and noticed the bottom coils were bright red/orange, apparently the oven did not turn off. So I attempt to turn the oven on, then back off and nothing seemed to work. My last option was to run downstairs to switch off the breaker and completely shut down the power to my appliances.
A few hours later after the oven finally cooled down I flipped the breaker switch back on hoping to reset the unit. However as soon as I switched the breaker on, the oven immediately started to heat up again. So, I now have the breaker off and defective Kenmore oven that I can’t use. Thankfully I was home when this occurred or it could have very easily burned my entire house down.
I did some research on several website and noticed that there were recalls on many Kenmore ovens a few years back with the exact same problem however my serial number was not one of them.
So I contact Sears online and the representative told me that there were “no recalls on Kenmore ovens” Then he proceeded to try and sell me a “Premium Service option” for $239.99 which would cover any repair up to $500 plus a 1-year Service Smart Agreement. Which of course I declined then he proceed to give me another option to pay $75 for a technician to come out and provide me with an estimate for parts and labor that I would be responsible for paying out of pocket.
This is clearly an issue with these appliances, that the manufacture is aware of and is ignoring the responsibility to keep their consumers safe.

I have contacted Kenmore multiple times and have always been told there have not been many safety issues or complaints yet for them to do a recall. How is this possible when you search the model number this is the same thing you see complaints and safety issues for? This scares me to death how much longer till others do this and goes unnoticed and someone gets hurt or my house burns down.

Over was set a 350 deg on 8 minutes time to bake cookies. After approximately 5 minutes we smelled smoke coming from the oven a found the product blackened and smoking profusely. Shut the oven off,but the broiler coil continued to glow, even though it was not set for broil, bake only. Reporting this because of the potential for a fire if not more closely monitored.Never had a problem with the oven before now.

I was baking a casserole at 350 degrees when the control panel made a sizzling noise and we saw a foot long white/yellow electrical arc over the top of the control panel. Previously to this there seemed to be mismatch between the set cook temp and how the food cooked (too high).

The product, in the report: Kenmore Smoothtop Electric Range Model No. 790.96113409 Serial No. VF64434361
Kenmore Smoothtop Range not part of original recall. Front burner on the left failed to turn off after being switched off. (Does eventually turn off, after few mins). However, no matter what temperature selected, it automatically goes to the highest setting and seems as if there is no temperature gauge. It just gets as hot as it can get, the longer it stays on. It has been overheating for a while, but the not shutting off immediately became a concern. After reading about recall and seeing that other model numbers would sometimes turn on spontaneously without being switched on, caused even more concerned. Called Sears and was told that since that model number fell outside of the scope, all they could do was send out a service tech for $129 and then pay the cost. Wasnt worth losing my house in a fire, so I had it repaired by them to the tune of $201.00

The product, in the report: electric range
Our kenmore Elite electric range had a massive short circuit. It made some rather large noises and some smelly smoke. When the panel in back was removed there were several locations where burn marks were made.
model number 790.99122401 (this model is not one specifically mentioned as a recalled item, but after looking around the internet, this is apparently a common problem due to the proximity of the stoves thin wiring to heat exposure.

The consumer stated that her electric range front burners was spontaneously turning on by itself. She had to switch it off using the circuit breaker, she tried to power it on again using the circuit breaker but the range remains inoperable.
The consumer stated that there was a service call sometime during this year where the fuse was replaced for one of the burners. However, this did not resolve the problem. She has had prior service call two years ago as well for the same incident.
11/2012 The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that the range was not recalled, a service rep could be sent out at a cost to her.
The caller feels that this range is a fire hazard and should be reported.

Exploding glass is definately a safety concern. The outside portion of the glass door spontaneously exploded while not even being used. No one was even in the kitchen when this occurred. There are many, many complaints about this issue online and yet no recalls that I am aware of. Thank goodness my 3 year old was in another room. Something needs to be done about this sub-par manufacturer and the less-than-helpful store (Sears) that continues to carry these faulty products.
I am repulsed by this whole experience and it’s extremely dis-heartening that in an awful economy we spend hard-earned money on a product that shouldn’t even be allowed to be sold.
