    The product, in the report: Shape-Ups Tennis Shoes

    The consumer states that she bought the tennis shoes in order to relax her back because she had previously suffered spinal fracture. She indicates that she wore her tennis shoes for approximately one month before the incident occurred. The consumer used them on average four times per week between ten to twelve hours per day.

    10/17/2012 (Approximate) The consumer went up her porch steps. She indicates that because of the “rocking-chair” style of the tennis shoes, they went up on their tip and threw her off the porch seven feet down. The consumer was injured on her right side, suffering fractures to her shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist and fingers. To this day the consumer cannot use her right upper extremity. She required a new shoulder, elbow and wrist, while her fingers remain crooked.

    The consumer required three surgeries over a period of one and a half year to try to gain function of her arm. The rods and pins did not work. She received therapy to see if that would help but it did not and her arm never improved. The consumer was told that there was no longer any hope that her arm would ever regain function.

    The consumer contacted her attorney immediately after she was dismissed from the hospital from her one-week first stay. Her attorney contacted the manufacturer, though she does not know when.

    The second and third time the consumer was hospitalized, she stayed for two to three days. The third time she stayed, the consumer developed a staph infection. The consumer required intravenous therapy around-the-clock for the following six months, at which point she was put on antibiotics for the next two months.

    The consumer feels that her tennis shoes pose a safety hazard.

    This caller purchased her athletic shoes around August 2010, she had notice that there were small instances such as her ankles not feeling secure but kept walking in the shoes. She was crossing the street August 2011 when she felt the same lack of weakness in her ankles but then felt excruciating pain in her right ankle and the feeling of rolling or slipping and then realized that she was on the asphalt ground. She got up and limped to the curb and sat down. She looked to see if there was anything she could have slipped on or that could have thrown her off balance but there was nothing. She called her father who picked her up, took her to the emergency room at [REDACTED] where she was ex rayed, bandaged and referred to their Orthopedic team at Gunderson Health Systems where she was advised that she had a bad sprain a few days later. Her ankle was placed in an air cast. Caller is not clear of actual dates but all happened around the first week of August 2011. After maybe one week the caller’s ankle was not getting better so she was referred for an MRI which was completed under sedation. She was then diagnosed with torn ligaments, torn tissues and advised that she was going to need surgery. Surgery was scheduled and completed on December 28th, 2011. Caller lost 8 weeks of employment during her recovery then continued therapy for another six weeks. She has been advised that she will need to wear a tri-lock brace on her ankle for anything more than walking.

    I purchased a pair of Skechers Shape up size 12 shoes off of Ebay sometime in 2012. I had worn them very little up to the day I had my accident. The date was 2/27/2013. The wife and I was going into Cleveland, Tx. for lunch when the accident happened. At my home I have 4 steps to get off of my porch. Being retired military I always start off with my left foot first. I stepped down on the first step with my left foot, then bringing my right foot down the half moon bottoms on the Skechers caught the top edge of the first step. With body in motion feet stationary, you can imagine the outcome. I evidently landed wrong, because I broke my left femur. The worst hurt I have ever felt. Ambulance took me to the hospital in Cleveland, Tx. I stayed in the emergency room for a day and a half before they shipped me to Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston Med Center. This was because all of the doctors was not sure on how to repair my fracture. The surgeon that operated on me put a titanium bar in my leg with 10 screws to hold it in place. I was on crutches for 6 months waiting on the leg to heal enough to put weight on. These Skechers Shape Up shoes are dangerous. The half moon bottoms is the problem.

    I was walking from my desk to the restroom and the shoe just gave way from under me. After a few minutes my ankle was swollen and I had to see a doctor. After consulting a doctor from [REDACTED] I was diagnosis with a torn liagment. l had to wear a boot for 12 weeks to see If that would help my ankle heal. Even after wearing the boot i still have Issue with my ankle. I am unable to wear certain shoes and is unable to stand for long periods of time. Those shoes did not provide any of the things that was advertised.

    I purchased several pair of Skechers Shape up shoes and they caused me to have a stress fracture, in my foot from a fall, while wearing a pair. I was in a cast for 4 weeks. Then while wearing the shoes again, they caused me to fall, injuring my foot again. They were the only shoes that I owned and they have proven to be very unsafe. Two doctors told me how they throw your balance off and to stop wearing them, which I did do. My balance was good again and my back stopped hurting, all from wearing Skechers Shape Up shoes.

    Caller stated that she was wearing the shoes while walking on the pavement, she fell backwards and was taken to St John Hospital Maplewood MN by a ambulance. There she had X-rays done, she was given pain medication and released because the X-rays did not reveal any injuries at that time. However, she was still having discomfort in her neck, shoulder and chest. (2010) She visited her physician and was given MRI, there was no diagnosis. She visited a Spine specialist months later who advised that she had spinal damages and needed surgery. She had 2 surgeries done in 2010 and 2011 she was not sure of the second surgery. She stated that she is still enduring pains from this incident.

    The shoes was discarded because they had caused her injuries.

    The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

    Caller feels that this shoe is a safety hazard and should be reported.

    The shoes made me trip and brake my ankle due to the odd design. I am and was a very sure footed person. As a past gymnastic student all through high school and an active teacher, I have never lost my balance or broken a bone until I wore these shoes. They caught and I could not catch my footing in time for the 1st time in my life. I knew my ankle was broken! I just could not believe it! I have never tripped, fell, or slipped without catching myself. The shoes made it impossible due to its strange design! I was not jumping around or climbing excessively. I just went up one step and tried to come down.

    The consumer stated that the shoes are dangerous and she needed surgeries for her injuries.

    The consumer stated that around Oct/Nov 2008, she was wearing the shoes when her right ankle twisted and popped. The consumer went to the doctor. The consumer was provided black boot to wear for a while but it did not heal the ankle. The consumer received the surgery on her right ankle for torn ankle tendon in April 2009.

    The consumer stated that she started putting more pressure on her left leg due to surgery on the right leg. That damaged the meniscus on her left knee. The consumer had to get a surgery for torn meniscus in her left knee on Feb 2010/2011.

    The consumer called the manf regarding this concern. The consumer stated that she did not hear back from them.

    The consumer has filed a complaint with an attorney.

    I was walking down the stairs and I fell as a result of the wearing these sneakers. When I fell, my elbow hit the step and jammed the bone into the socket, causing bone spurs. I also have a 2 bulging discs in my neck as a result of the fall. I had to have surgery on my shoulder as a result of the fall. I also experience a lot of pain as a result of the pinched nerves in my neck.

    Went up the steps, on third step slipped and fell. This happen in an apartment building that had tile flooring, no carpeting.     While at work for UPS in my occupation as a driver, I lost my balance and fell while crossing the street. I was wearing Skechers Shape-Up “slip-resistant” shoes, and I believe they caused the fall.

    At the scene of the incident, the paramedics had to administer a painkiller shot before they put me on the gurney and into the ambulance. Another strong painkiller was administered to me just 20 minutes later, in the emergency ward at [REDACTED] Hospital in [REDACTED].

    One week later, surgery was performed on my bimalleolar (double) ankle break and dislocation. Ten screws and a metal plate were inserted at the site of the break. The surgery was followed by a three-day hospital stay, with painkillers administered every three hours up until my release.

    During my six-month recovery, I had to rest one knee on a rolling cart, or use crutches, in order to navigate around my house. I was relegated to two floors of my house (there are three) for approximately seven weeks, with no weight-bearing on my injured leg during that time. I was given a handicapped parking sticker for my car, which I used when I needed to drive somewhere.

    For those seven weeks, I had to sleep on a rented hospital bed in my first-floor office. I showered in my main-floor bathroom, seated on a hospital chair in the tub, with a plastic bag (from toe to knee) over my Velcro-fastened cast. I went through three months of physical therapy for rehabilitation.

    The consumer indicates that for a period of approximately five months, he used his tennis shoes five days a week (twelve hours/day) as he wore them for both of his jobs. The consumer reports that his left foot was sore and inflamed for six to eight weeks that preceded the day he decided to go to the hospital due to extreme pain he felt.

    05/15/2013 The consumer reports that he was walking up bleachers when suddenly his “foot gave out” and he fell. He indicates that he had to limp back to his office. The consumer then decided to visit the hospital to have his foot checked out. He was given a diagnosis of a stress fracture to his left foot and received air casts for his foot. He was told to wear them daily for the following six weeks.

    The consumer reports that he was very pleased with the air casts he received as he was unable to walk without them. He indicates that it helped him heal his foot.

    The consumer states that after his foot was presumably healed, he experienced pain from time to time and that wearing the air casts again relieved him of it. He indicates that it was the same type of pain felt at the same location as before.

    The consumer reports that for the past six months his foot has been pain-free. Since the pain had previously showed up sporadically, he assumes he may feel pain again in the near future.

    The consumer indicates that he got rid of the tennis shoes because they were fairly worn. He believes these tennis shoes are faulty and are the cause of his pain as he never had problems with previous sneakers he wore.

    The consumer had been using her walking shoes for two months. She wore them on average twice a week for thirty-five to forty minutes.

    06/21/2013 The consumer reports that when she started using her walking shoes, she began experiencing left shoulder pain, which she attributes to the use of said product. The consumer visited an urgent care facility for the first time because of this issue. After a series of tests, they prescribed her pain medication. The consumer reports that her pain got worse even after taking pain medication.

    06/23/2013. The consumer visited her primary care physician and was advised to get an MRI in order to determine what the persistent problem may be. When the results of the MRI came in, it indicated extensive damage and inflammation to her left shoulder. The consumer had suffered severe rotator cuff tendonitis with 95% tear of tendon, and synovitis of the rotator cuff.

    The consumer indicates she believes that her shoulder pain is caused by the use of her walking shoes since she never had these problems occur in the past. The consumer plans on contacting the manufacturer.

    The consumer feels that these walking shoes pose a safety hazard.

    On the morning of 12/14/11 approximately 9:30am my niece [REDACTED] and I wee getting ready to leave to walk. I had my Sketcher Shape Up shoes on lost balance and hit my garbage can hitting the rim of the can on my throat. I couldn’t talk. The swelling was cutting the air ways off and damaged the vocal chords. [REDACTED] took me to the Emergency Dept at Clermont Mercy Hospital in Batavia, Ohio. I was there for several hours trying to reduce swelling with medication but It wasn’t working. l was then transported to University Hospital in Cincinnati, OH.I was in the emergency room there. I was prepped for Emergency Surgery. The surgery lasted for several hours. The surgeon put a trache in. l was in recovery until 2:00 am and then was transferred to the intensive care unit and then the Burns Unit for seven days. I had several swallow tests which caused me to get pneumonia because it went to my lungs. My oxygen level was very low so I had to stay on oxygen.! transferred to a normal room which I was there for a few more days. When I finally got to come home 1 had a home care for three weeks. I had equipment oxygen machine, a suction machine, and a pick so the antibiotic balls could be administered. I made several visited to my throat doctor, to the speech therapist but my voice never got much better so I have to live the rest of my life with a scar and a changed voice. My trache was finally removed on 1/17/12. I stayed 2 more days in the hospital for recovery. That was been the most trauma I have had in my lifetime.

    Caller was wearing this pair of shoes around March 2010 when while working as a food server began to turn from the table, her foot seem to slip in the shoe which was her correct size, she heard her left knee pop then felt pain on the inside of her knee, then it went to the back and all over and while her right knee was hurting it didn’t pop.

    She reported to her manager who refused to allow the caller to leave work.

    The caller noticed that while she finished her day out her knees just continued to swell.

    After her day was complete she went home then the next morning she immediatly went to the Walk in Quick Clinic in Burlington, WA where she was referred to a specialist with an MRI request.

    She was then sent for surgery.

    The caller states that these happenings occurred over a two week period but that she was in so much pain that dates are a bit blurred.

    Submitter stated she believed the mfr’s advertisement since she already had a serious broken neck from 5/6 - 6/7. Submitter also noted she was looking forward to these shoes helping with muscle gain and posture, but that didn’t happen. Submitter stated, in fact, it made it worse.

    Submitter also added the round bottom sketchers were the cause of her injury. She believes when she told the doctor the back of her knee hurt as well he told her anytime the back of your knee hurts there’s an injury in the knee. Submitter also noted had she known that she would have stop wearing the round sketchers. She stated it is quite obvious the round bottom shoes creates knee injury. Submitter also mentioned each friend of hers that also worked in the round bottoms [shoes] all had knee surgery with muscle tears. Submitter noted she has had three (3) surgeries now.

    I fell and broke my knee cap while walking on a level surface because of the tennis shoes I had on at the time rocked back and forth causing me to lose my balance and fall on a marble floor. I had to go to the emergency room at Kettering Health Network and they put me in a brace that I had to wear for 2 weeks before having the first surgery.     I suffered a torn ankle tendon due to the instability of Skechers Shape Up Shoes. The rocker bottom on the show forced my ankles to overflex beyond the normal range of walking motion. This constant overuse caused my left peroneal ankle tendon to stretch and rupture, resulting in about a 3 inch tear in my tendon. My podiatrist advised to to immediately stop wearing this type of shoe. My injury required numerous Dr. visits and and an MRI to diagnose. Surgery was required to repair the tear. As a result of surgery I developed a blood clot in my left leg which required a 5 day hospital stay and months of follow up medicine for treatment.     Due to the instability and unsafe construction of Skecher Shape-Up Shoes, I suffered a serious injury to my left foot.     (2009) Consumer stated that while wearing shape shoes he slipped and fell forward down a flight of stairs. When he fell he landed on his knees which eventually caused injury. At the time, he did not seek medical attention because he did not felt that he had hurt himself. However, around May 2012 he visited his physician because he was feeling discomfort in his knees. He was diagnosed of torn meniscus and cartilage, he received treatment. He stated that he had worn these shoes for about 4 years continuously for about 8 hours per day.

    walking out the door on my job stepped down off the porch to go to work van to take my client to doctors appointment , my shoe tilted forward and I fell flat on my face busting lower lip with my front teeth. I went to the doctor after work, the doctor treated my lip, informed me that I should have stiches but I waited to long to have them sew up my wound. The insde of my bottom lip has bump on it. Prior to the incident of my falling, my sister, son, daughter would warn me stumbling when walking. My feet would be very tired. Another issue concerning those shoes when walking , my toes would feel like they pinched together causing cramping and pain between them.

    On August 30, 2010 I was at work in 16 barracks coming down the stairs from off the third tier. As i proceeded down the stairs I lost my balance in the Skechers Shape-up Toning shoes. I missed two stairs and fractured and broke my ankle. A drug test was performed before I left the job and was rushed to Pine Bluff medical center. Surgery was performed the next day. A six hole one-third tubular locked plate was applied to the lateral side of the fibula and fixed with six lock screws. These shoes are not safe, they make you rock while you are walking, loose balance and cause injuries. This is a job that I have been performing for thirteen years and never had a injury until I started wearing those Skechers Shape-up Toning shoes. I was looking for the delivery on the toning and loosing weight with the shoes but they didn’t deliver as advertised on the television.

It was very painful. After the first fall I had after effects that alarmed me, such as pain in my hips to the point I had trouble walking down a hallway. I fell more, and only after taking the shoes off did I stop falling. Years later, I continue to walk unevenly. The pain in my hips effects the way that I walk. I have trouble standing up. My knees hurt and I never had problems with them before.

    I was visiting my friend, in Oregon and fell backwards, over four cement steps and landed on the crown of my head, on concrete, when I lost my balance, while wearing my Sketchers shape ups shoes. I suffered a severe concussion, due to loss of consciousness, from the fall, a brain injury, abrasions, contusions, vision problems, vertigo, dizziness and memory loss. I was transported to Mercy Medical Center Emergency Room in Roseburg, Oregon and was successively treated by a neurosurgeon and an ear, nose and throat specialist. Thank you very much. My shoes grabbed on my tile floor in my kitchen and made me loose my balance and fall backwards It cracked my tail bone and busted open my right elbow I had to go to a doctor who deals with broken bone etc. He had to draw infection from my elbow with a needle My elbow was swollen so bad that I could not unbend my elbow to drop it down by my side.     I wore Sketchers Tennis Shoes for approx. 2 years. After wearing these shoes 4-6 hours a day for 5 days a week I commenced having foot trouble. The sneakers are tan, called shape-ups, and have very unusual bottoms. The bottoms are uneven, low in front and back and high in the middle.

    On April 26, 2013, I was wearing Skechers Shape-Ups. You must be always cognizant of the different heels in these shoes when going down or up the stairs, as they can be very unstable and uneven. I fell down the stairs and broke my left ankle. I was taken to the hospital and put in a cast. I was informed I had broken my left ankle and metatarsal.

    The consumer states shortly after she began to wear the shoes she felt pain in her right knee. She would wear the shoes almost every day for approximately 8-10 hours.

    The consumer states the pain grew over time and to the point where she could not walk.

    In October of 2010 the consumer went to her physician regarding the pain in her right knee. Her physician referred her to an orthopedic specialist. The orthopedic doctor advised the consumer that she had a buildup of fluid in her right knee and she would require surgery. The consumer states the doctor did not advise what caused her injury.

    The consumer did not want to provide the name of her physician or orthopedic doctor.

    On 01/01/11 (estimated) the consumer had knee surgery due to 2 tears in her meniscus. The consumer was prescribed pain medication. The consumer was advised by the doctor to go to physical therapy for 12 days.

    After surgery the consumer had one hydrocortisone shot every month for 3 months.

    The consumer states she does not have pain in her left knee.

    The consumer feels the shoes are dangerous and caused the injury to her right knee.
