The product, in the report: Pyrex “easy grab” 8 inch square baking dish, part of this Pyrex Easy Grab 8pc Set set: http://www.target.com/p/Pyrex-Easy-Grab-8pc-Set/-/A-13198883 model number is 1093839
A glass Pyrex baking dish exploded in the oven. The dish was recently purchased and used only a few times. It had not been dropped and had no visible cracks. No safety warnings were violated: I put a chicken dish with liquid into a pre-heated 350 degree oven for less than an hour, and it exploded while still in the oven.
The resulting mess was hundreds of glass shards, chunks, and glass dust. I was seconds away from taking it out and could easily have been injured. I feel fortunate that this happened while still in the oven, but someone else might not be as lucky. I’ve since heard from several other people who’ve had the same experience but didn’t report it, so suspect the product is more dangerous than recorded reports would indicate.

Hurt, no treatment Made Mar 15, 2012, sent to the company Mar 23, 2012, published by CPSC Apr 13, 2012
The product, in the report: Pyrex glass cooking dish.
Hi,
I wanted to report an incident that occurred recently in which a Pyrex cooking dish exploded in my face. The incident was very scary and could be likened to a glass grenade exploding in my kitchen. The sound was tremendous and the glass shard were sent flying in all directions. Luckily the majority was aimed away from me and therefore I only received minor cuts.
I placed the dish on my stove top but DID NOT turn on the stovetop. I was simply preheating the oven to 425 to cook with the dish and placed the dish above the stove while it waited to come to temperature. Within a few minutes the dish exploded. The glass was very hot and I can only conclude that the heat from the oven below eventually blew up the dish.
However, the temperature change was not sudden, the oven had been preheating for at least 6-7 minutes before the explosion occurred. Secondly, I can only assume that the stovetop itself did not even reach the 425 temperature the inside of the oven was set for. In fact I could still touch the top of the stove with my hand for short periods of time without any burns. I would imagine it was no hotter than 350 on the stovetop, and yet the glass still exploded.
This situation is very dangerous as I did not violate any warnings at a basic level. It was on a stove top that was heating up from second degree heat, but from my view, it was simply waiting on a cool stove while the oven preheated. This situation could be very common for cooking.
I understand consumer reports has already done investigations and confirmed that imperfections in the glass and the type of glass used (in contrast to previous glass types) has led to a far more susceptible dish to explosion.
Before any more citizens blind or kill themselves, I suggest a serious inquiry is made and action is taken to return to the old types of glass or increase quality in manufacturing so that glass defects cannot don’t let this happen.
Thank you,

The product, in the report: Pyrex 8x12 baking dish
I was thrilled to get a new set of Pyrex bakeware for Christmas 2011. This morning, February 5, 2012, I used a piece of it for the first time. I prepared a sopapilla cheesecake and placed it in the oven to bake @ 350 degrees. It had only been in the oven for approximately 10 minutes when I heard a horrible explosion. My husband jumped out of his chair and said “What was that?!!” I told him that it was apparently the Pyrex that had shattered in the oven. I opened the oven door to see broken glass and my dessert dripping everywhere. The glass continued to pop and crack for at least 15 minutes after I left the oven door slightly ajar. I will not use my new Pyrex ware again. I have old Pyrex that I have used for over 30 years with no problem. I will definitely tell everyone that I know NOT to buy any of the new products. I can not imagine what the outcome would be if the oven door had been open when the explosion happened. This is one of the most dangerous products I have ever encountered in my 30 plus years of cooking.

The consumer stated that she had placed the pyrex dish in the oven with contents to bake at a temperature of 350 degree, however, approximately 5-10 mins later she heard an explosion and discovered that the glass dish had exploded, shattering glass peices inside the oven.
The consumer cancelled the operation of the oven to prevent further damages.
2/6/12 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that the pyrex dish would be replaced but she was concerned that replacing it with a similar one could cause another incident.
The consumer feels that this pyrex dish is a safety hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Casserole dish. Approx 9 x 13 size. Clear glass
My Pyrex dish exploded in the oven. I have had this casserole dish for 10 years and have used it many times. I was making bar cookies. I melted butter in another container in the microwave. I poured it in the pyrex casserole dish. I sprinkled graham cracker crumbs on top of the butter. Then I layered chocolate chips, coconut and pecans over that. I poured sweetened condensed milk over that. Everything in the dish was room temperatore except the butter. The butter had cooled about 5 minutes before I put it in the oven. The oven was pre-heated to 325 degrees when I put the dish in the oven. It was there about 10 minutes and it broke in hundreds of pieces. I turned off the oven and waited for it to cool. I cut my finger getting the glass and goo out of the oven. It wasn’t serious enough to require stitches. I have 3 more Pyrex casserole dishes that I am afraid to use.
Pyrex has a disclaimer on the internet that it’s products are safe and it is only a rumor that the dishes break. This is what they tell you to do: 1.Always place hot bakeware on a dry, cloth potholder or towel. ?Never place hot bakeware on top of the stove, on a metal trivet, on a damp towel, in the sink or directly on a counter. 2.Never put bakeware directly on a heat source such as on a stove top, on a grill, under a broiler or in a toaster oven. 3.Always allow the oven to fully preheat before placing bakeware in the oven. 4.Always cover the bottom of the dish with liquid before cooking meat or vegetables.
I am very concerned that people will continue to use this product. It is not safe.

The product, in the report: 13x9 Pyrex glass baking dish. The dish was a transparent blue color.
I placed a 13x9 Pyrex glass baking dish filled with eggplant Parmesan into an oven pre-heated to 400 degrees. The pan was placed on a baking rack that was about midway from the bottom to the top of the oven. The dish was placed about 5 inches from the side of the oven. The dish was about 4 years old, had never been dropped or damaged in any way and had no apparent flaws of any kind. About 5 minutes after placing the dish in the oven we heard a loud “crashing” sound. We looked in the oven and saw that the dish had exploded. One side of the dish had fallen completely off, the remainder of the dish was shattered and pieces of glass littered the bottom of the oven. I had baked in this dish for 4 years with no problems until this incident. We were extremely fortunate that the dish exploded while in the oven, thus preventing the possibility of personal injury due to flying glass shards. No one was injured in this incident.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Bowl, 18”, clear glass.
Pyrex brand bowl was on shelf 1 foot above kitchen counter when it fell onto counter. The bowl broke into hundreds of pieces. The major issue was not the fact that it broke, but rather the explosive nature of the shards and the fact that they were very dangerous.
Specifically, Pyrex is supposed to be (1) break-resistant and (2) safe if it breaks. This product was neither. Most concerning, for someone with two little kids in the house (ages 3 months and 2.5 years), is that when the product broke it did so in an extremely dangerous manner not befitting a kitchen product.

Within 10 minutes of it being done, I heard sounds coming from the oven and opened it to see thousands of shards of glass everywhere. If I had had it in my hands, it would have been disasterous.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 2 Quart Easy Grab Baking Dish
I received a set of Pyrex Easy Grab Glass bakeware for Christmas. I have some other nice cookware and did not want to ruin it so I made sure to read all of the safety information before using it so I was aware not to do anything that would result in a change rapid change of temperature. I prepared 2 pieces of fully defrosted chicken and preheated my oven to 375F. I gave the oven more than enough time to heat up (it also “beeped” to tell me it was heated after the usual 6 minutes it takes) before I placed my chicken (with a small amount of broth in the bottom as directed by the website) in the oven to cook. After the half hour that the recipe suggested I opened the oven door and using a meat thermometer determined that my chicken needed more time. I closed the oven door and set my timer for another 10 min. About 3 minutes later I heard a loud popping noise and discovered that my glass baking dish had exploded in my oven! Luckily I was not injured but my meal was ruined and there was a very large mess to clean up. The pan exploded into lots of very tiny pieces. I no longer feel safe using my glassware in the oven because of this.

Within minutes, popping sound, then hundreds of glass pieces on table, on floor, tiny pieces, big pieces. Total mess. I was cooking Christmas dinner last night. I had a sweet potato casserole in the oven in a 9x13 glass Pyrex dish. I pulled the dish from the oven and placed it on the counter top to cool, and as soon as I sat it down, the dish exploded. Glass and hot food flew everywhere. Pieces landed on me, my sister in law, and her infant daughter that was walking through the kitchen. The glass and food landed in several of our other dishes, and pieces of glass stuck in the wall and in the tile on the floor. We had to trash most of our dinner, and spent about an hour making sure everything was cleaned up. This is an extremely unsafe product that needs to have something done. The flying glass could have badly injured my niece. I will never buy another piece of Pyrex glassware as long as I cook.

The product, in the report: Clear pyrex 9 x 13 baking dish, about 2 years old
I am reporting a case of shattering pyrex. This was a newer pyrex casserole dish, 9 x 13. I was baking chicken in a 400 degree oven. The pan came out of the cabinet and was at room temperature. The chicken had been out of the refrigerator for about 10 minutes before going in the oven. After just a few minutes in the oven (probably less than 10), the dish shattered into a million pieces.
I have consulted the pyrex website, and discovered there that you are apparently supposed to have the bottom of the casserole covered with some kind of liquid. Perhaps that would have made a difference; however, I have used my older pyrex (from the 1970s) to bake chicken in this way with no problems for decades. I am deeply concerned that people using the newer pyrex expect it to behave the same way as the older pyrex and they are setting themselves up for serious injuries.
The breakage happened on Dec. 17, 2011. The dish was about 2 years old, clear glass pyrex 9 x 13, no chips.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 8”x8” Soda Lime glass baking dish
Hello, I would like to start out by stating that I am now aware of the hazard of heating soda lime glass bakeware directly on the stove, and openly admit that I did, in fact, attempt to heat my glass bakeware in this manner today.
HOWEVER, I have many Pyrex baking dishes that I’ve inherited, which I have used dozens of times both in the oven and on the stovetop with no issues. Today, however, I removed a meatloaf from the oven at 350 degrees, intending to remove the meat and make a pan-gravy in a relatively new Pyrex dish. I allowed the pan to cool so I could remove the meat, and then reheated the drippings, added flour and seasoning, and then began to whisk in some broth. After a few minutes of whisking, the pan suddenly shattered all over my oven, counter, and floor. I can only attribute my not getting hot gravy or glass on myself to my being able to jump backwards while the explosion occurred in the opposite direction from me.
I visited the Pyrex website after the incident, where I saw a new safety campaign led by [REDACTED] to highlight the precautions to take while using their glassware. This is in fact rather new. The last time I researched Pyrex pieces on their website, no such campaign was being advertised, and I did not know that Pyrex started using Soda Lime Glass rather than the far-superior Borosilicate glass. I am tremendously disappointed that consumers were not informed of this switch and the new safety campaign regarding the Soda Lime Glass. As someone who watches both local and national news every single day, I am disappointed that this information was not made available by Pyrex or the CPSC, or even by Consumer Reports, who tested many types of glass bakeware. Perhaps even a shared effort to mail a postcard to “Resident” at every address in the US would have been helpful, as consumers such as myself who have been using Pyrex for years would not think to check their website to see if they have changed the type of glass they use.
I implore the CPSC to look into this issue further, encourage the manufacturers of glass bakeware to use the safer, far-superior Borosilicate glass, and actively attempt to inform ALL consumers (not just via internet) of the NEW dangers with their products now being made of Soda Lime Glass and not Borosilicate Glass. Remember that those consumers who have used Borosilicate for years, such as myself, were not aware that Soda Lime was substituted and it is more likely to shatter during the same activities where Borosilicate glass does NOT shatter.
Thank you for your time.

The product, in the report: 2 qt bakeware dish with lid. The lid had the following information on it: 13 C-624 PYREX USA 09.... (NOTE: the four dots are descending, starting at top of the line and moving to the bottom)
I purchased a smaller lidded 2 qt pyrex bakeware dish 11/29/11 at my local grocery store. I hand washed it and put it on the shelf to store. Today, I decided to make a small lasagna in it. I constructed the meal and put it in the oven to bake at 350’ for 35 minutes. When the timer went off after the 35 minutes, I slightly opened the oven door to look at the lasagna. I decided it needed another 5 minutes to bake, so I closed the oven door, reset the timer and went to the living room to sit down. Right after I sat down, there was a very loud glass-like noise that came from the kitchen - I thought maybe something had fallen out of the dish drain and had broken, but when I went into the kitchen, everything was fine. I was perplexed and for some reason decided to look in the oven. To my shock, the Pyrex dish had completely exploded - sharp chards of glass and boiling hot lasagna are everywhere!!
I had heard the claims about this happening and how the company has been discrediting the complaints or saying that some had misused the bakeware, ‘leading’ to breakage, but I reporting this to ensure that folks know the claims are true. I did absolutely nothing outside of the norm to this dish and I just purchased it this week. I am completely freaked out right now and am shocked to learn that the claims are true. Had I not chosen to leave it in the oven, it most definitely would have happened when I was handling it and I would have been seriously injured. I am really upset and very concerned that this could happen to some one else - and possibly not with the same unharmed outcome.
Please, please, please be sure these dishes are thoroughly investigated/tested, as I am very concerned about their safety. I own so much Pyrex bakeware and dishes, as I do not like to bake in metal nor store items in plastic. No more. It is all going to the recycling center as I will never trust another of their products again.
Thank you for your time and attention to this potentially dangerous bakeware.

I had a Pyrex baking dish EXPLODE in my oven on Thanksgiving. The food had been in the dish overnight in the refrigerator. I took it out of the refrigerator and let it set for half an hour to bring it to room temperature before placing it in the oven. Had I been opening the oven to check on food at the time of the explosion, I – or someone else in the kitchen- would have surely been seriously injured. The food was obviously ruined because we were afraid of glass shards. My husband cut himself while cleaning it up today, because there were so many tiny sharp pieces, and well as huge shards of glass. As a footnote, I am not a beginner cook- this was the 33rd Thanksgiving dinner I have prepared.

I was using a 9”x13” Pyrex glass baking dish to bake 8 sweet potatos. Per the manufacturers directions the oven was fully pre-heated to 325 deg. F, the bottom of the dish was fully covered with a liquid (Brown sugar sauce approximately .5” depth), and no direct flame or broiler in use. after baking for 23 minutes i heard an explosion and thick smoke began billowing out of my oven. After extinguishing a small fire inside the oven I realized that the baking dish shattered spilling oily sauce into the ovens lower shelf and into the burners causing the fire. Other than Destroying a good portion of my familys thanksgiving dinner, if nobody was nearby to hear the dish break or see the smoke this breaking dish could have burned my house down! My parents have Pyrex glass bakeware that has been in service for more than 25 years with no problems. After doing a little research I believe that the manufacturer has compromised the saftey of their product while attempting to save money in the manufacturing process.

I wanted to report an incident involving pyrex glass ware that I had last night. After preheating my oven to 400 degrees, I placed the pyrex containing meatballs into the oven. Note that the glassware was room temperature, and had just been taken out of the cabinet. After 2 minutes, I heard a boom, and noticed that the pyrex had exploded into hundreds of pieces, right before I was about to open the oven to turn them over. Luckily, no one was hurt, but this could have caused severe injury, disfigurement, blindness, etc…..
I will definitely not be using glass bakeware ever again, and I feel that this should be reported to warn consumers of the risk they pose.

The product, in the report: 2002 Pyrex Clear Glass 9” x 13” baking dish
I placed some pork ribs in a 9 x 13 Pyrex baking dish, then placed the baking dish into a preheated 450 degree oven. The Pyrex dish dates back to 2002, and it had no chips, dings, or large scratches that would have caused me to be concerned about the safety of the dish. Fifteen minutes into the baking of the ribs, I heard a loud explosion come from my kitchen. I looked in the oven and discovered the Pyrex dish had burst into hundreds of glass shards. I was lucky that this happened while the dish was in the oven, because those shards combined with the force of that explosion could have caused me serious injuries otherwise. I have read that Consumers Union expressed concerns about these products. Why has nothing been addressed with Pyrex and other makers of such products? Shower doors, car windows, and other glass products are required to be made so that they do not present a threat of serious injury; why are potentially explosive glass baking dishes being ignored?

The product, in the report: Nine (9) inch Pyrex “glass” pie-plate
We were shopping today (11/13/11) in a major grocery chain in central Texas (the incident has been reported to them at the time and followed up by a telephone call to management, recommending they remove the product from display). My wife asked me to pick up a 9-inch Pyrex pie plate from the display counter. As I began to lift the plate from a stack of about a half-dozen plates, the one I was holding completely shattered, causing minor cuts to two fingers on my left hand, and my thumb on my right hand. I had not even removed the plate from the stack. The incident was witnessed by another shopper; and he stated that his wife was similarly injured while using a casserole dish in their kitchen - the dish merely shattered. An associate from the store immediately arrived (he must have heard the audible POP when it shattered), and provided the necessary assistance, took a report, and cleaned-up from the incident. It was fortunate that no young children were in the area, or they too could have been injured, as the shattered glass material flew out from the shelf no less than 4-feet. My wife then recalled reading in the October 2011 issue of Consumer Reports about the faulty products manufactured by [REDACTED]. When we got home, I recovered the magazine and read that [REDACTED] commented, “that most glass-product failures are caused by “consumer misuse, failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and supplier mishandling.” I can assure you that I was merely trying to retrieve a plate from the display shelf when a loud POP occurred and the plate shattered in pieces. [REDACTED], later in the article, declined to comment on the (previous) complaint, citing its policy on pending litigation. I can only say that as a 75-year-old retired naval officer, I would be willing to stand before any judge and jury (or other adjudicator) and cite that the product I was trying to obtain for purchase is clearly an unsafe product, and it should be removed from the shelves of sales floors in the interest of public safety. I was not trying to pry the product from a stack, merely lifting it carefully with both hands when it shattered with a loud POP. Reading through the Consumer Reports article, it seems since Pyrex and [REDACTED] changed the materials utililzed for producing their bakeware products from borosilicate to soda lime glass (reportedly in the interest of less cost, thus more profits) they have subsequently placed profits higher on their agenda than public safety. I was cooking pork loin in a new pyrex dish at 350 degrees. It was placed in the oven at room temperature. When I checked on it about 45 minutes later, the dish had exploded, and the oven was full of glass. A photo can be provided upon request. This was to be a meal prepared for company, and it was ruined. If I would have moved the dish a little earlier, it could have exploded, and caused serious injury.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 9x13 baking dish - Sold as part of a set of 3 dishes with red plastic lids
I was baked a vegetarian shepherd’s pie in an 9x13 Pyrex dish, and the dish exploded. The dish was less than 3 months old and had never been cracked, dropped, broken, or cleaned with abrasive products. It was purchased at Target in October 2011 as part of a set of 3 Pyrex dishes with lids. For the dish, I placed room temperature filling into the dish and put the dish into a 350 degree oven. It cooked for about 45 minutes, and I removed the pan to a wooden trivet. Shortly after I removed the pan and placed it on the trivet, it shattered. The small shards were all over our kitchen and in the food. No injuries were sustained other than glass splinters in my fingers.

The glass sides exploded into little pieces while the bottom of the dish exploded in six large shards of glass. There were no injuries reported.
She estimates using the pan at least once a month. She has not contacted the firm but plans on doing so.
She would like to see the firm place a warning label on their products to prevent any injuries with it exploded.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Glass Baking Dish
Consumer wanted to report that her medium sized Pyrex glass baking pan exploded in her oven. She stated that she had the dish in the oven to heat up spinach and water at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. The consumer did point out that the oven was on for a total of 30 minutes in a pre-heat cycle. The consumer was in kitchen and opened the oven door. The Pyrex dish exploded and glass forcefully came out of the oven and some shards embedded themselves into her vinyl floor tile. Luckily no one was injured.
The consumer was off to the side of the oven door when she opened the oven door and was out of harm’s way. The consumer did not call her insurance company about her flooring. The consumer has a typical oven with a boiler pan underneath. The consumer could hear the shards falling into her broiler. The consumer has not called the retailer.
The Pyrex dish is clear. The consumer emailed the firm today to inform them of what happened and has not gotten a response. The consumer felt it was imperative to report this issue to the CPSC. The product has no signs of damage prior to the incident. The size of the dish was just smaller than a 9X13 and was clear. At the time of the incident she did not have the dish lined with aluminum foil.

Our glass Pyrex baking dish shattered for no apparent reason right after removing it from the oven. Luckily, my husband was holding the dish over the stove when it broke, so the glass shards did not land on him, but it was a potentially dangerous situation.
We’ve never had a problem with the dish in the past. We were baking Poblano Peppers in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes, so neither the temperture or baking time was extreme.

The product, in the report: Pyrex dish 11x7, 5-10 years old
On Friday night, I was in my living room when I heard a loud sound of breaking glass in the kitchen. Vlhen I went to investigate, I found a few small pieces of glass just inside a cupboard door. I store Pyrex baking dishes on the shelf in this cabinet: an llx7 nested inside a 9x13 with an 8x8 sitting gently atop both of them. (They have been stored in this way for decades with no problem.) Now the 11x7 baking dish had shattered spontaneously and small pieces of glass were scattered throughout the cabinet, although most of the llx7 pan was still resting inside the 9x13 with numerous “fault lines” throughout, as well as several missing chunks of glass. The 8x8 pan On top had not shifted and was stili in its usual slightJy angied position atop the other two. None of these three baking dishes had been used in more than a week. The cabinet is next to the oven, but it hadn’t been turned on for three days. The temperature in the kitchen at the time was 72 degrees. I remembered reading an article about problems with heated Pyrex, and when I googled “exploding Pyrex” it referenced the story in the January 2011 Consumer Reports. All of the examples cited in that article --and all of the countless complaints on Google --referred to breakage occuning when the pans are heated. Are there other instances of spontaneous breakage of unheated pans? This was very scary. I am considering replacing all ofthe Pyrex in the house. But I’m wondering if pieces marked “Pyrex by Corning” (which I know are 30 to 45 years old) are still considered to be safe to use.

The lid is also navy blue in color and is about 16x10 inches. The dish itself was a clear glass and said pyrex on it as well.
On October 16 2011 about 6:30 pm cst I was cooking marinated portobella mushrooms in my oven that was placed in a Pyrex dish. They had been marinated, then placed in the oven second row down and broiled on the lowest setting. I added cheese to the portobellas and then after approximately 3 minutes I took them out and placed them on some hot pads. The PYREX dish, that I had cooked them in, exploded in to several hundred small shards. The explosion was so violent that it spread out to about 100 feet, caused me to have about 7 nicks on my leg area, burns on my legs, and several tiles on my floor have melted spots on them from the incident. As of now I have not received any medical attention to my injuries. I do not have any information about when I purchased the dish because it was a gift. The product, in the report: Pyrex 9x13 inch glass pan
I was baking brownies at 300 degrees F in a glass Pyrex 9x13 pan. The pan was new, purchased in the last few months. We heard a “pop” noise and my son opened the oven enough to look inside. The Pyrex pan had exploded into a thousand pieces which were scattered all over the oven. I contacted Pyrex to find out about the pan. The representative read off a list of “don’ts” and told me to collect all the pieces and save them until I received a replacement pan. Since many of the pieces were stuck to the brownies, I used a plastic trash bag to contain the pieces. Where the shards came in contact with the plastic bag, they sliced through the plastic. I ended up putting the whole mess into a cardboard box. I took great care in collecting the pieces but still ended up with a splinter in my foot. There were so many pieces in the oven, I used my shopvac to collect them.
Although we had used the pan approximately two times before, we had not done any of the “don’ts” listed by the representative. I have another Pyrex pan which is the same size but probably 20 or more years old. I have never had any problems with this pan. Even if Pyrex sends me a replacement pan, I will be hesitant to use it. I have already purchased a metal pan as a replacement.
Interestingly, when I went online to google Pyrex, “Pyrex pan exploding” came up as a search option. When I followed that search, I found many reports of exploding pans, so with associated injuries, including one poor woman who was blinded. Talking to the Pyrex representative, I got the impression that she was trying to blame me for the pan explosion. I assure you, this was not my fault. I could do the exact same thing with my old Pyrex pan and not have a problem. This is a product problem.

The product, in the report: 8” by 10” Pyrex Storage Plus baking dish (7212-PC)
On 9/1/11, I bought an 8” by 10” Pyrex Storage Plus baking dish (7212-PC) from Wal-Mart. The label on the dish stated that it was “Freezer Safe,” “Oven and Microwave Safe,” and “Dishwasher Safe.” Before use, I washed the dish in the top of my dishwasher and stored it in my cabinet. I had this dish for 8 days and I never used it in the freezer, oven, or microwave. I used it once, in my refrigerator, to store lettuce. Afterwards, I loaded it into the top of the dishwasher in the evening, and turned the dishwasher on the next morning, so the dish was room temperature when washed. After the washing cycle ended, I opened the door of the dishwasher to allow my dishes to air-dry. (I use “No heat rinse” and “No heat dry” to save energy.) Almost three hours later, I heard an incredible explosion in my kitchen. The cooled pyrex dish had violently shattered inside the opened-door dishwasher, sending razor-like shards of glass everywhere. The dish did not crack and break -- it exploded! Glass fragments were found as much as 9 foot 10 inches from the dishwasher. Thankfully, no one was in the kitchen at the time.
I tried my best to provide the details you would need, but please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any more information. Also, I have kept the glass shards if examining them would be helpful. This was a terrifying event. Please, please, please investigate this product before someone is very seriously hurt!

The product, in the report: 8” Pyrex Cobalt Blue Square cookware
In late June earlier July I was in the process of moving. I was in the new apartment when I decided to make spaghetti for my daughter and her friend. I went to look for my pans and realized that they must had been left in my storage unit. I took a tin cake pan and started to brown the hamburger and then started to look for something that I could boil the noodles in. I chose a square Blue Pyrex dish that I had owned for a couple years. I always thought they could withstand an abundance of heat especially since the dish could cook casseroles in the oven. I was standing about 2 feet away with my back towards the oven washing some dishes in the sink. I started to turn my body to the left, thinking that the noodles should be almost done. Right at that very exact moment, the dish with boiling water and noodles exploded!!! I’m talking, it sounded like a bomb and blue Pyrex went flying everywhere! I found bigger chunks about 7 feet away. The kitchen was closed in on all four sides. On the side with the sink that was facing was where, to the left, you would enter through an open entry way. To the right was a wall that had a window opening that looked into the living room. Kind of like a Diner effect where the waitress would put her ticket on a spinner. I didn’t think too much about if I was cut or hurt because I was so angry and hungry at the same time and the 2 girls needed to be fed. I left the mess in the kitchen and checked over my body quick to make sure there were no gashes and I seemed to be okay! I took the girls to eat and went on with the night. After getting my daughter to bed that night I took a shower to try to relax myself. After I got out, is when I kinda started to think that something more could have happened during the explosion! My skin started to feel, how do you describe it?, tight and tingly. Like hair raising or growing when you get really cold or have goosebumps. (Closest description I can come up with). I said to my room mate, humor me John, I think I have glass in my skin... what does the internet say to do to get it out? The first thing we tried that night was soaking in ice cold water that had baking soda mixed in with it. We filled a huge round laundry basket in the tub as I took turns putting a leg in at a time and then my arms. We weren’t for sure that it did anything or even if there was what seemed to be itty bitty slivers of glass in my skin. So, the next day, my body temp going from warm to cold due to the fact that I was moving plus I cleaned apartments during the day...This is why I feel the shards in my fingers just got pressed further into my skin from scrubbing hard surfaces all day long with the tips of my fingers. I was getting annoyed by the sensation of my skin tightening that I went to CVS/Walgreens to get PRID a suave that is suppose to pull things like this out of your body! It smells horrible, but I started rubbing it on my legs and arms and sure enough small little dark pieces started appearing. I would put Prid on my hands and then wrap them up and put gloves on so I wouldn’t mess with them. (I would start to mess with my fingers by taking a tweezers or clippers to get what felt like little pieces of glass... I think all Ii did was break them off into more pieces and it would just go further down into my skin.???) After using the Prid I went over to my friends house because she had a steam shower/room. We thought that this would bring some of the glass out also. I would feel my face tightening up and doing the weird thing described above, so she had an up close mirror with a light around it. When I put my face up to it and took a close look I couldn’t even believe what I saw!!! My whole face along with my neck had blue hairlike follicles everywhere! I told her to look into the mirror because we all thought I was crazy thinking that this glass could be so tiny that it was hard to tell if it was glass or not! She looked and said “OMG... Yep that’s blue... What else could it be?” This incident happened in May and it is now September! I feel like I am still having to remove hairlike follicles from my face and hands because these were the areas that i had more interaction with due to cleaning and then touching my face during daily routines of putting on make up and washing it! I feel that the tiny microscopic shards in my hands have mostly migrated to the tips of my fingers where I have numbness and col-lased skin
I haven’t gone to the doctor because I don’t know what the could possibly do for me. I have contemplated it though, due to the fact that some of my friends think I am crazy when I say I have glass in my skin from a Pyrex explosion. If you would like to contact me about this you can reach me on my cell at [redacted]. I would like to know if something like this has ever happened to someone else because it has haunted me for almost 6 months now! Any suggestions on what to do to find out if there are still pieces of it in my body I would gladly go and do to know what the deal is. Thank you for listening, [redacted]

The product, in the report: This a Pyrex baking pan purchased on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Target in Rockville, MD as part of a 6 piece set that included three pans and three storage covers called “Pyrex Grip Rite Bake n’ Store 6-pc. Value Pack.” I do not have the model or serial number, as it would have been imprinted on the pan itself. I do not have the wrapping as I recycled it in my Tuesday pickup. The Target website lists the store item number as 070-02-1175. Here is a link to the set I purchased: http://www.target.com/p/Pyrex-Grip-Rite-Bake-n-Store-6-pc-Value-Pack/-/A-10762124 which also shows the item number. Needing a 9x13 glass pan for a recipe, on Sunday, September 25, 2011, my husband and I purchased a new Pyrex pan at Target in Rockville, MD as part of a 6 piece set that included three pans and three storage covers called “Pyrex Grip Rite Bake n’ Store 6-pc. I also have the receipt, the two other pans from the set and the three matching covers as proof of purchase. I attached a pdf of the website, the receipt, and a picture of the other items in the Pyrex set.
On Sunday evening, I placed the Pyrex in the dishwasher, with the three glass pans on the bottom shelf and the three covers on the top shelf as directed by the Pyrex instructions. It was washed on a “normal” setting. The pans sat in our cabinets from Monday evening, when my husband and I emptied the dishwasher, until last night, the first time we used the pan.
I made noodle kugel – a type of noodle pudding. I mixed in a separate bowl sugar, eggs, sour cream, cottage cheese, and crushed pineapple. The mixture sat on the counter while I cooked the noodles. I instructed my husband to make sure that our granite counter tops were completely dry before placing the Pyrex pan on the counter. Then my husband coated the bottom of the pan with corn flake crumbs, cinnamon and sugar, and added some pads of butter from a stick that had been sitting out for at least 10-15 minutes. My husband strained the noodles and I sprayed them down with cool water to prevent sticking and to prevent the noodles from cooking the mixture I created. We combined the noodles and mixture and coated the tops with more crumbs, cinnamon and sugar, and butter. I write all of this to demonstrate that room temperature contents were added to a Pyrex pan on a dry surface.
At about 9:35pm, I place the pan into an oven set to 350 degrees. I emphasize that the oven was not in the preheat stage or broil, nor was the pan close to the heat source. The pan was placed on a rack in the middle of the 350 degree oven. After about 20 minutes (I know from the timer I set), my husband and I heard a loud boom that sounded like an explosion from the inside of our oven. I peaked in and found that my Pyrex pan had exploded. I have two pictures that are attached from the inside of my oven showing the pieces - a wide shot and a close up. My oven has since been cleaned. I saved the glass which is intermixed with the kugel and have a picture, also attached, of the pan in the paper bag we used to hold the glass pieces.

The product, in the report: 9x12 glass baking dish
I wasn’t sure who to contact until today when I saw an article with the same problem. It happened about a year ago, I had my family and their friends over for dinner. I was baking brownies and when I took the glass dish out of the oven and was about to set it down on the counter it popped and shattered into a million little pieces leaving cuts on mine and my mother’s arms. We were all in shock, and we were very lucky that it didn’t do permanent damage to our eyes. Unfortunely my parents little dog wasn’t so lucky. She was standing in the kitchen when it happened. I could hear something sizzling and I looked at her and she had hot brownie batter on her back. We grabbed her and started washing it off when we noticed blood on our hands. A piece of glass had shot right into her leg. We took her to the vet right away as we sobbed our hearts out. The shard of glass had severed her tendons and veins in her leg and she had to have surgery at the cost of $1500. This might have been a freakish accident but it still happened when it shouldn’t have at all. Whenever I tell my story there is always someone else who has their own story about the same problem. I do not cook with glass anymore even though I prefer to, it’s to dangerous now.

The dish shattered and pieces fell to the floor and some scattered about the kitchen. Fortunately, neither my daughter nor I were hurt at all. The dish had no visible damage prior to use. I have used this dish in the same manner previously, so I am uncetain as to the cause.

The product, in the report: 9 by13 glass Pyrex casserole dish
On 9/17/2011 I used a Pyrex casserole dish to bake a ham at 325 degrees. About one hour after the dish was removed from the oven I was loading it into the dishwasher. As I was leaning down to put soap into the dishwasher the dish suddenly shattered near my face. The shattering sent glass flying as far as 8 feet away. Luckily no one was hurt. I believe this shattering is the same type that has been in the news. This dish could easily have been sitting on my table with my young children nearby when it shattered. Please look into this matter promptly to keep consumers safe. I feel this is an unsafe product that needs to be removed from the market. I have also contacted Pyrex to let them about the incident.

A brand new 13x9 Pyrex soda lime glass pan was used to make eggplant parm. The meal had finished cooking and was set next on a rack to cool when it burst into hundreds of pieces. Some of the pieces of glass flew on my girlfriends feet who was standing a foot away from the “explosion.” I was in the next room with the television on when i heard the loud bang. I heard the loud bang first and then a scream coming from the kitchen so I bolted up to see what had happened. Upon entering the kitchen I noticed many pieces of glass scattered all over the counter top and floor, blood on my girlfriends feet and food all over the floor and counter.

I was making chicken parmesan, frying the pieces of chicken in a cast iron pan on top of the stove and then put the browned pieces of chicken in a 9x13 pyrex glass pan. My oven was preheated to 350 degrees. I then poured a jar of spagetti sauce over the chicken and topped with cheese and set it in the oven to heat and melt the cheese. After about 5 minutes, I heard an explosion in my oven. When I opened it, I found the pan had split into many pieces with shards of glass everwhere inside my oven. I had to use my vacuum to get them all out.

I was baking a ban of brownies and when they were fully cooked I removed them from the over and placed them on top of the stove. While they were cooling I was playing on the floor with my daughter, when I smelled something hot. I stood up just in time for the glass brownie pan to explode! The whole pan blew up and glass sharts that were very sharp went flying all over my kitchen at least 15 feet. My daughter was not injured by the explosion but the sound was so loud that it scared her and she started to crawl away...right through the glass shards on the floor. My own feet were cut in a number of places when i ran after her and carried her out of the glass. It took several hours to clean up all of the tiny pieces of glass that were left lying after the explosion.

The product, in the report: Pyrex glass baking dish 9x13 inches
I had my Pyrex 9x13 inch baking dish in the oven - baking at 375 degrees for 30 minutes with chicken and sauce. I took it out of the oven and the dish exploded - sending large and small glass shards everywhere. It was very dangerous - I got cut on my foot, leg and hand and the extremely hot chicken and sauce was hard to handle as well. There was nothing unusual about it - I have cooked this dish many times. No warning whatsoever - just a loud pop and glass shards went flying everywhere. I cleaned out the glass, but I still hurts. I may have some glass embedded in my thigh. I may need to see a doctor. I had company over and couldn’t leave to go to an emergency room. I am so thankful that there were no children around. I found a bunch of similar complaints on consumeraffairs.com. I will NEVER buy this type of product again. It is very dangerous that the glass is so unstable and shatters without warning at a normal baking temperature. Thank god nothing flew in my eyes or injured my children. Very frightening.

I am writing to report a problem with exploding Pyrex. When removing a roast that I was cooking in a Pyrex dish, the pyrex exploded right in my hands. Glass flew in all directions throughout my kitchen hitting myself, my wife, and our 3-year-old daughter. This is the 2nd time this occurred. The first time was back in 1988-89. At that time, I assumed it was a fluke. This time, I’m convinced that this is a very dangerous product. Luckily, we only received small cuts and ruined expensive dinners.

Caller was taking Pyrex pie dish out of cupboard on May 15, 2011 around 8:30PM when it fell 18 inches out of cupboard, hit the linoleum floor and exploded. Caller states that he wants to report as a serious danger because the explosion resulted in pieces landed 20 feet away to other side of room stopped only by the wall. It took him two hours to vacuum all pieces up. Caller considers this to be a serious safety issue if someone were not wearing glasses or if a child had been nearby. He said that the shock of the incident makes it difficult to say whether the glass hit his glasses or not but Tiny pieces of glass did hit his chest and his arms. Caller states that if the pie dish had broken he finds this very acceptable but not an explosion sending glass throughout the air. Caller’s wife heard sound in another room and describes it as the sound of an explosion. Caller has part of pie dish.

I was baking with a Pyrex glass pan 9 X 13 inches when it exploded in the oven. This is the second Pyrex glass pan that I have had explode on me. No injuries resulted from the incident. However, after doing some research on this product, there have been multiple problems with the Pyrex glass pans. Consumer Reports has investigated the product and there have been multiple problems with the glass pans. I was cooking a pork tenderloin at the time with vegetables and a thick sauce covering the bottom of the pan and the pan went into the oven when the oven was preheated.
I bake often and have used the pans many times and I was using the pan according to the manufacturers recommendations. Once again, this is the second glass pan that has blown up in my oven in the last two months and I had another one blow up in the oven at work within the last two years. There is something wrong with this product.
