Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 21, 2013, sent to the company Feb 1, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 15, 2013
The product, in the report: 9x13 Pyrex baking dish
My husband put chicken and a little water in a 9x13 pyrex baking dish and put it in the oven preheated to 350 degrees. After about 5-10 minutes, the dish exploded. He was near the table and said it sounded like a shotgun being fired. He turned toward the stove and saw smoke billowing out of the oven. When he went and opened the oven door, the chicken was laying all over the racks and glass was all over the bottom of the oven.

No one hurt Made Jan 20, 2013, sent to the company Jan 31, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 22, 2013
The product, in the report: Pyrex 13” baking dish, approximately 6 months old
I prepared the ingredients for a brunch egg bake, put them into a Pyrex 13” baking dish and heated the oven to 350 degrees. When the oven had reached temperature, I put the room temperature dish containing the room temperature ingredients into the hot oven. After baking for about 10 minutes, I heard a load explosion and when I looked in the oven, the Pyrex dish had exploded, leaving hot pieces of sharp broken glass scattered around the oven.
If I had happened to open the oven door to check the recipe when it exploded, I could have been hit by flying glass. Additionally, I have no idea what the risks are of using the oven if I am not able to completely clean it.

I removed the piece of glass that a saw. A couple of weeks later I have found that there is still a piece of glass lodged in my hand. I need to see a physician to have it removed.
The dish was almost new (less than 6 months old) with very light use. It had not been dropped or banged at all.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 9x13 glass dish, smoky in color with handles on short sides
As I was removing a Pyrex 13x9 glass pan from the serving table, I experienced a laceration on my left thumb and palm when the glassware broke in my hand. The glassware broke into two main sections with shards piercing my hand, requiring emergency care. This injury required three stitches to my thumb and one stitch to my palm, as well as antibiotics and a tetanus shot. Now, two months after this incident, the wounds have healed, but I cannot fully bend my thumb and it continues to be highly sensitive and I am seeking further medical attention.

No one hurt Made Dec 31, 2012, sent to the company Jan 15, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 30, 2013
The product, in the report: Glass baking dish, microwave safe, oven safe, not to be used on the range top, no broiler
I put together a breakfast casserole that sits in the refridgerator until morning and then you pop it in the oven for 45 min to bake. The dish was cold but not frozen. When I put it in the oven at 350 degrees I expected to have a nice breakfast soon. Within 10 min. the whole dish exploded into a million pieces. I have cooked with this same pyrex dish for about 2 years. It is very handy to store leftovers because it has a plastic lid that fits on top. The lid is not meant to be used in the oven, only the microwave. But I don’t use the dish in the microwave because I prefer the taste from the oven. I never use the plastic lid except for storage in the fridge.

The product, in the report: Pyrex glass cooking pan 13x9
I really don’t know how to describe this other then the pan shattered on the counter top. My wife had washed it about 6 PM and at about 10 PM after sitting on the counter the pan just exploded. We were watching TV in the living room and hear glass breaking in the kitchen. When we arrived in the area the pan was on the counter just exploded. Nothing had hit it, it had not been dropped, it was not in any spot where it was being hit by cold or hot air, it was not moved for close to 4 hours. I had just bought the pan 2 days ago and we used it one time that night, cleaned it and sat it on the counter on a towel. It just exploded. The larger parts were about 2 1/2 to 3 inches apart from each other some smaller parts were found 7-10 feet away. We did not take any pictures we just cleaned up the area and went about our life. I am reporting this due to the news feed on the “Kitchen calamity: Reports of shattering cookware on the rise” found on the web. Just wanted to throw our information out there on this. It was a clear Pyrex glass 13x9 pan.

The product, in the report: Pyrex rectangular baking pan
A clean (dry), empty, at room temperature, Pyrex baking pan was sitting on top of a cold, turned-off coil burner on the stove. I turned on the stove, cooked my meal, and then turned off the stove. At no time did the pan ever touch the warm stove top, nor did any person ever touch the pan during this time. Long after the stove had been turned off and cooled, the pan just exploded. Talking with a co-worker, she said that her Pyrex pie pan suddenly exploded in the oven while she was baking a pie. She did not open the oven door or touch the pan, it simply exploded while cooking.

The product, in the report: Glass loaf baking pan
I used a Pyrex loaf pan to bake banana bread. Upon completion of the cooking time, I removed the pan from the oven and placed it on top of the stove which had nothing cooking on it at that time. After a few seconds the glass pan exploded and shattered glass spread several feet over the stove, counter top and floor. The glass continued to break and fall apart as it cooled. The pan was given to me about one or two years ago as a gift. This breakage occurred on 12/29/12 however, this was not the first time I had used the pan. I had used it numerous times before. No person was injured in this accident.

I was cooking with a fairly new Pyrex casserole dish. I had just put it in the oven and heard a strange sound. When I looked in the oven, the dish had exploded after being at 350 degrees for only 6 minutes. My dish had exploded into glass shards on the left side. I had just purchased it 1 month ago and had used it only 5-6 times. I am very concerned now about Pyrex dish safety.

The product, in the report: 11 cup glass oven cookware
A 11 cup pyrex brand cooking dish shattered after one use. On Dec 24, I cooked mac & cheese in a 350 preheated conventional oven. On the evening of Dec 26, I took the container from the refrigerator and placed it on the kitchen counter. About 5 to 10 minutes later I heard a cracking sound, and found the container in pieces. I think blue plastic cover and mac and cheese stuck to the sides kept the pieces from shooting out. I used other pyrex pieces on Dec 24, a 3 and 6 cup,no problems yet. I’m going to sit the 3 cup out today inside a bag to see if it shatters. Now I am afraid of this cookware.

I was baking a potato dish in the oven at 350 degrees. When it was done I brought it out to cool and I placed it on a trivet. About 15 minutes later we all heard a loud crash. The dish had completely shattered. Thankfully no other food/people were around so the only damage was to the potato dish. This was the first time using this baking pan.

The product, in the report: 9” by 12” pyrex casserole dish
I had baked chicken spaghetti in a glass Pyrex casserole dish. My daughter, her significant other and my 2 year old grandson were over to eat dinner. I removed the dish from the oven, placed it on 2 pot holders that were positioned side by side due to the length of the dish, this was also to protect my countertops, and suddenly it exploded. Food everywhere, glass all over he kitchen and my grandson had no shoes on at the time. Fortunately, we were able to get him away before he stepped in the glass. I was standing right next to it when it exploded and I am so thankful I did not get a piece of glass in my eye, etc. I fear baking with a glass dish to this day regardless of the instructions. The instructions did not help me nor did they work.

After I took it out of the oven I laid it on a pot holder to cool, I turn around to wash dishes and then I hear a loud bang. I look and the glass had exploded and shattered everywhere. My dog was right beside me and we were both lucky to not have been injured. I have only had these dishes (I have another one that i purchased with it) for about a year and i really love them but now I am scared to use it in case me or my puppy do get injured this time.

I was using a 9x13 pyrex dish purchased at the local Target. I was baking a chicken dish with liquid sauce. I took the dish out and put it on a granite counter. It took my husband and me over an hour to clean up all the little pieces of glass.

The product, in the report: Pyrex baking dish approximately 9” X 15” a clear glass pyrex baking disk approximately 15” X 9
I recently saw an article about reports of shattering cookware and I decided that I should report the incident that occurred in my home about 3 months ago. My daughter-in-law baked a chicken a large pyrex baking dish (like she had many times before). She did not put water in the bottom of the dish because she didn’t know she was supposed to. When the chicken was done I took the dish out of the oven and placed it on a non-working electric burner on the stove (again I didn’t know I shouldn’t do this -- we were given the dishes from a friend who no longer used them). I removed the chicken from the dish (thank goodness) and we were eating dinner when about 20-30 minutes later the dish exploded all over the kitchen. It shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces. Fortunately no one was hurt and since we were mostly done with dinner no food got glass in it. The noise was like a gunshot going off and it scared the dickens out of all of us. My son cleaned up the glass as best he could but we were finding glass for weeks afterwards in all kinds of strange placed in the kitchen -- even 10 feet away.
The reason I am reporting this now is that I’m relatively certain that the majority of the shatterings go unreported so your statistics are not at all accurate.
Thank you,

In October 2012, we had company visiting from Texas. It was the last night of their visit so we prepared a special meal. I prepared Apple Crisp in a 9 X 13 Pyrex dish. I preheated my oven to 350 degrees and then placed it in the oven when it reached the temperature. We were eating outside while the Apple Crisp was baking. After cooking for approximately 20 minutes I heard the explosion. The others at the table thought it was some kind of noise from the neighborhood so I didn’t go into check inside the house. A few minutes later when I went in to take the Apple Crisp out of the oven, I found the shattered glass and apple crisp in my oven. I took a picture of the disaster in my oven.

8 or 9 inch square Pyrex baking dish removed from oven and set on a cooling rack exploded with 2 eye witnesses to the event. It sounded like a shotgun blast throughout the building and glass was located as far as 8 ft away embedded in paper towels and all over floor and counter. 3 weeks later, an employee picked up the big Pyrex batter bowl by the handle from the dish drainer. It had been sitting there overnight without incident. Immediately, the thing exploded in her hands. She had shareds of slivered glass everywhere...in her eyelashes, down her blouse, etc. Both of these incidents occurred in my kitchen and very close together in time frame. No one has to tell me not to buy more Pyrex. All of it has been removed from my house.

The product, in the report: 8x8 baking dish
I’ve had two separate incidents where the Pyrex glass cookware I was cooking with exploded.
The first time I was baking a graham cracker crust. I took the Pyrex out of the oven and placed on a burner that was off. I stepped over to my refrigerator to grab something and the Pyrex dish exploded. Had I been standing in front of the dish I probably could have been injured. Luckily the refrigerator door shielded me from the flying glass shards.
The second time this happened I was broiling a steak, I opened the oven door to take the internal temperature of the steak and again the Pyrex dish exploded inside the oven. Luckily the pieces it broke into were large and did not go very far.
Since these two incidents I have not purchased any new Pyrex cookware. I know go to thrift store and look for the vintage/original Pyrex, which I know is safe and will not explode when used.

The product, in the report: Pyrex baking 9”x13” clear glass baking dish with extended ends as handles (has a red plastic snap-on lid for storage) that is part of a set of two with a smaller version with lid that sets inside the 9”x13” for sale and storage. Pyex lists the set as Pyrex® Easy Grab™ 4-pc Baking Dish Set w/ Red Plastic Covers
I had used this dish for a baked cranberry dish for Thanksgiving with no problem after purchasing a set of two (the 9”x13” and a smaller dish with covers) at Walmart. I prepared baby-back-ribs with an oriental sauce, baked at 350 degrees covered with foil for about an hour or so and then for about half an hour uncovered. I removed the pan from the oven and placed it on knitted hot pads (my grandmother had made these for me years ago and they were room temp and dry!) on my room temperature glass top stove. I had turned my back to the stove and pan to continue preparation of our meal ...my 11 year old granddaughter had just stepped away from the stove! ... a loud BANG made me jump and turn to see what on earth happened ... I expected to see my granddaughter hurt! The Pyrex dish had EXPLODED!!! In fact, the explosion was so extreme that the ribs had been blown UP and landed back on the stovetop, but sauce and shards of glass where blown all over my kitchen ... stove, cupboards, floor, the facing cupboard and counter about 8 feet away, and I even found glass slivers about 15 feet away in the dining area!!! I had some small marks on the backs of my bare legs where I had been hit by flying glass, but thank God, my granddaughter was not hurt. I returned the lid and the smaller dish and lid to Walmart ... the lady referred me to a manager because I had only the LID of the exploded dish to return ... when I quite loudly started explaining how the larger dish exploded but I would gladly retrieve the shards I had cleaned up and put into the trash with other customers becoming involved ... the manager advised I must fetch another set from their shelves, and when I did, she refunded my purchase. When I posted this shocking experience on Face Book, two nieces reported that Pyrex dishes had exploded on THEM previously!!!

I have used Pyrex for years. I purchased a new set last year. While cooking some chicken in one of the new set, I warmed up the oven, I had the chicken all seasoned and in the pan with the vegetables. I am still finding pieces of broken glass in the oven. I have been using pyrex for years and this has never happened to me before.

I put salmon into my pyrex pie dish (as I had done many times before), put it in the preheated oven per instructions on the salmon packaging. I realized that my house was filling with smoke and quickly looked in the oven. The pyrex pie plate had split right down the middle and all of the juices (grease) from the salmon had dripped in my oven, causing the smoke. I had never had a pyrex container do anything like this before. It created a mess and the possibility for a fire in my oven.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Easy Grab 4-Quart Oblong Glass Baking Dish with Red Plastic Cover
After allowing a large batch of rice pudding to cool for 15 minutes on the stove, I poured it into the 9” x 13” Pyrex baking dish, which was on my countertop and was at room termperature. The pudding was still very warm at that point, but had cooled considerably from the time I stopped cooking it. Everything seemed fine at first. Then just after I had walked away from the counter area where the pan was, I first heard a slow cracking sound, followed by an explosion of the glass which sent the glass forcefully flying not only throughout the kitchen, but also into the adjoining dining room, hallway, and family room. Had I still been standing in front of the counter, I would have been seriously injured, but what was even more chilling was to think if a child had been standing near the counter, the child would have been blinded or even killed by the explosive force of the glass.
I have used Pyrex baking dishes for more than 45 years, and had never had a problem with them until this incident, even when pouring boiling water into a Pyrex measuring cup or bowl. It is my understanding that the Pyrex ingredients were changed after the license was sold by Corning Glass, and that the new “formula” was supposed to improve the product. However, I suspect that the reason the ingredients were changed was for lowering productions costs and increasing profits. I do not believe this new Pyrex has been adequately tested before putting it on the market. I purchased the baking dish the same day as the incident from the Wegman’s supermarket in Niagara Falls, New York. If you require an exact date, I may be able to have the supermarket verify the date of my purchase.

The product, in the report: Casserole Dish
I thought I was the only person that had experienced the exploding cookware phenomenon until I read an article online. I too had experienced this. I cooked a pan of lasagna in the oven and when it was finished, I pulled it out and placed it on the stove to cool and set for a while. I went to the living room to watch some tv and it sounded like rain was hitting the kitchen window. When I got up to see what the ruckus was, I was in awe to see the lasagna slowly oozing out of the Pyrex cooking dish. It had splintered into a thousand long slender pieces. I was just lucky to not have had the hot dish in my hands or worse, set it on a table with hungry guests. The only loss was a healthy portion of good ingredients and about two hours of preparation and clean-up. Again, I was grateful that no one was injured.

The product, in the report: Brand new pyrex pie plate
Baked two pies at one time just before Thanksgiving 2012. One was an older pyrex dish and the other was a newly purchased pyrex dish. The oven was at 350 degrees. Both pans were placed on top of the oven to cool. The top of the oven was not particularly hot or I would have placed on the counter. Within two minutes, the new pyrex dish exploded all over the kitchen into about 50 pieces. Shards of glass were everywhere on the floor. The older pyrex dish was fine. The new dish never made it past its first baking experience. There was nothing to return to the store to get our money back. The top of the oven was cool enough to place our hands on it with no problem so I don’t think it was due to sitting on top of the stove.

The product, in the report: 9.5” clear glass Pyrex pie plate
I was making a pumpkin pie. All of my ingredients were room temperature as they had been sitting out on the counter for over an hour prior to using them. The ingredients were 1 can of pumpkin pie mix, 1 can of condensed milk, 2 eggs, pre-made pie crust (not in a tin). I pre-heated the oven to 400 degrees and built my pumpkin pie in a 9.5” glass Pyrex pie plate. Once the oven was pre-heated, i placed the pie in the oven to bake. It was to bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, then the temperature was to be reduced to 350 degrees. As soon as I shut the oven door, I heard a strange sound. Opened the oven up and the pie plate had shattered in the oven. This pie plate was brand new. I had bought it several months before but had never used it.
I called Pyrex and they tried telling me I did something wrong, however, I had followed their instructions perfectly. They shipped me 2 pie plates as replacements. After reading the article on NBC news, I am hesitant to use them. I also felt the need to report the issue I had as well.

The product, in the report: Clear glass 9x13 Pyrex Baking Dish
Recently I read an article about glass Pyrex dishes shattering. I then remembered that this happened to me too earlier this year. However, it wasn’t soon after being removed from the oven. I had taken a dish to a food day at work, and on the way home, the pan was sitting in the passenger seat and I kept hearing this sound like glass breaking. I kept checking my windshield for rock chips and the longer I drove, the more cracking sounds I heard. I was really concerned something was wrong with my vehicle but then when looking out the side window for evidence, I happened to look down and saw the handle of my pyrex dish shattering. The bottom cracked in mulitple places, and by the time I got home, not even 20 minutes later, the dish was crumbled to the point I needed a vaccum to remove all the small pieces. I’ve never seen anything like it, it just dissinegrated! I kept thinking, what if this would have happened while at work and someone ingested a piece of glass, or my family, or while I was carrying it. It literraly just started popping, cracking and fell into pieces.

The product, in the report: 9x13 casserole
I recently bought a new set of Pyrex bakeware from Costco. A nice 9x13 and 8x8 piece, each with a cover and carrying case. I’ve had old pyrex pieces for years but was attracted to the accessories for ease of transporting dishes. I used the 9x13 to bake scalloped corn for Thanksgiving. Given the introduction of a lid and the carrying case, I read and followed the directions carefully. I took the casserole out of the 325 degree oven and immediately (directions stated to do so within 2 min.) put the cover on and put it in the insulated carrying case. The casserole then was put in the trunk of my car, on a 50 degree day, sat there for the 90 min. drive to my brothers. I took it out of the car, carried it into the house. My sister in law took it out of the insulated carrier, and set it on the table. About 5 min. later, I heard a strange noise. Just as I looked to see where the noise came from, the casserole EXPLODED in front of my eyes. It shattered thousands of pieces of glass all over the table and floor. Not only was the food made inedible, my niece and my sister in law were cut by the glass. I brought the remaining pieces back to Costco and got a refund. I went out and bought a [REDACTED] pan to replace it because I am spooked by the experience and not feeling safe to buy another new pyrex product. That is unfortunate for me as I loved the accessories. I know Pyrex type glass casseroles have limitations and need to be properly cared for, but for 35 years, I have had, and still have, old pyrex casseroles with which I’ve never had a problem. There must be something new in your product and, quite frankly, I am now scared to buy anything new that is Pyrex.

The product, in the report: Pyrex clear glass 9x13 baking dish
Yesterday at 4:15, I started to get things ready for my dinner which consisted of baked trout, pasta and green beans. I put the fish in my Pyrex clear glass baking dish and placed it on the left front of my stove top. I put water in a pot and placed in on the back left burner and I put green beans in a pot on a front right burner. At 5 pm, I turned my oven on to preheat. At the same time, I turned on two stove top burners – one to boil water and one to cook the green beans. I then left the room and sat down in a room nearby and visited with two of my sons. I heard a little crackle about two minutes later but figured it was just some water that was on the outside of one of the pots. Luckily, I delayed in going to explore. One minute later, there was a loud noise. When I went into the kitchen, I realized my mistake. I had turned on the wrong burner. I turned on the burner under the fish and not the one under the water. My mistake, yes, but I never imagined that it could have potentially been a life changing mistake.
The Pyrex baking dish did not just crack or shatter into small pieces; it EXPLODED! There were small pieces, medium sized pieces (3 inches by half an inch) and a few larger pieces within a 4 foot radius of the baking dish. Glass was everywhere. It was a pain to clean up and dinner, of course, was ruined. I could have been extremely mad about the situation but I wasn’t. I was just so thankful that my children or I had not walked into that room at the wrong moment. If someone had been in the kitchen, they would have been hit by flying glass. They could have incurred minor injuries or suffered extremely severe injuries. I get sick thinking about how our lives could have changed instantaneously.
I realize that the directions on the Pyrex dish state not to use it on a stove top. However, I don’t think I am the only one who will ever accidentally make this mistake. To me, this product has a safety issue. This morning I was surprised to learn on the internet that many people have reported similar issues. Pyrex is aware of these reports, but it keeps denying that it is a problem. I believe this product should be recalled.

Pyrex glass lid shattered in oven - On Nov 12, 2012 I purchased 3 Pyrex glass lids from Corningware, Corelle & more at 114 Pine st Corning NY. I still have the receipt. Tonight, 12/7/2012, I put a baked ziti leftover from the refrigerator into a Corning 1.5 qt casserole and placed one of the glass lids on top of the casserole. I turned on the oven, placed the covered casserole inside and closed the door. The oven had preheated to 190 degrees, when we heard a “pop” sound. We looked in the oven and saw that the Pyrex lid had shattered and was all over the bottom of the oven and inside the casserole dish. I have pictures. The imprint on the 2 remaining glass lids are “23 PYREX A7C A” & “27 PYREX A7C A”. We have used the one labeled “27 PYREX A7C A”. at least once without incident. The product, in the report: This is a Pyrex glass 9X13 baking dish that comes with a blue rubber/plastic snap on lid. It is sold as part of the “17-piece glass bakeware set” at Bed Bath and Beyond
Tonight I cooked cabbage, carrots, and potatoes in a pot on the stove. I took the top off the pot and let the food cool for about 20 minutes before placing it in my 9x13 Pyrex dish for storage. It was cool enough to touch, but still warm. The dish was on the room temperature countertop. I had put about 3 scoops of food, drained of liquid, into the dish when it exploded EVERYWHERE. I got a small cut on my arm and another on my cheek from a shard of glass. Thank god my pets weren’t in the room. The glass went everywhere within a 6 foot radius. There were large pieces and VERY tiny pieces. I just received this dish as a shower present. There were NO cracks, dings, or any other problems. The food was warm, but not hot. This was the first time I used this dish. I got a whole set of Pyrex for my shower that I’m now afraid to use. From what I am reading on other sites, this is a pretty common occurrence with newer Pyrex (manufactured in the last 12 years or so). It appears that the company is blaming every incident on consumer misuse when this is simply not the case. Pyrex is extremely expensive and I now have an entire set that I’m afraid to use. The worst part? When I received this set I gave my old bakeware to Goodwill. So now I have nothing to cook in. Even if the company is willing to send me a new dish, I will not accept it. This bakeware is dangerous. It should be recalled and a full refund should be offered for this entire bakeware set. Would you trust it with your pets or children around? I certainly don’t.

November 9th, 2012 caller had her oven set at 375 degrees to cook her ribs. After approximately 35 to 45 minutes she reached into the oven to turn the ribs, she took the pan out, set it on top of the oven to stir and turn ribs when while she was still holding the pan it basically exploded upward and downward and to the side.
Very little exploded outward as far as she can see but it was so sudden and shocking that she doesn’t have total memory of the incident. She is going by where the glass landed. She states that none of the hot liquid hit her, none of the glass hit her as far as she can tell.
The shards of glass from the pan are available for examination if necessary.
She contacted the manufacturer by email November 13th and was referred to CPSC.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 4-cup microwave bowl with lid and vent hole in the lid.
Product: Pyrex 4-cup glass bowl with lid that has a vent hole for use in a microwave. I believe this is a relatively new product line for Pyrex. I bought it 2-3 weeks ago.
I filled the bowl with green beans and pushed “reheat” on my microwave (which is equal to a power setting of 7). The beans only cooked for 3-4 minutes. Fortunately, I did not reseal the lid, but merely laid it on top of the bowl with the vent hole open. I say fortunately because when I removed the bowl from the microwave and lifted the lid, the bowl kind of wiggled and a rectangular piece of glass fell out at the rim. Then I noticed there was a horizontal crack in the glass all the way around the bowl about 1-inch from the top. Had I sealed the lid and tried to open it, I’m sure it would have shattered and injured me.

I preheated my oven to 350 degrees. Then I put an 8-inch square Pyrex dish (purchased in December, less than a year ago) of enchiladas into the oven. I just made the enchiladas with room temperature ingredients, they weren’t coming from the freezer. Within ten minutes we heard a loud bang and then sizzling. I opened the oven to find the bottom of the oven covered in many shards of glass (and lots of enchilada sauce). The shards were from the top inch of the rim of the dish, the bottom remained in its same shape, but with a large crack down the middle. I left the oven to cool before cleaning, and the dish continued to crack and break as the oven cooled.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 6x9 Glass Bakeware Dish
On October 2, 2012, I had baked chicken at 350 degrees in a Pyrex dish, then put it under the broiler for just a minute or two. When I removed the dish from the oven to check the status of the chicken, the dish literally exploded while still in my potholdered hand, sending thousands of jagged shards and micro-particles of glass all over my kitchen, along with micro-particles of chicken, too.
I was extremely fortunate that I wasn’t injured by the glass or the heat of the projectile particles. After cleaning up the disaster, I began looking online and read many accounts of pyrex shattering in ovens and microwave ovens too, and of people being seriously injured by the explosions. I now realize the pyrex website says that such glassware should not be used under a broiler, but I, like many consumers, had not read this, and since the product is marketed as bakeware it is understandable such confusion exists.
This is clearly an ongoing problem and, in my opinion, needs to be treated as a product recall with broad media coverage to be sure no further injuries are sustained.

The product, in the report: Glass baking dish approximately 9”x11”
While roasting vegetables in a Pyrex 9x11 glass baking dish, it exploded while in the oven. Following the directions that came with the set of glass baking dishes, I preheated the oven first. About 2 minutes before the end of the 40 minute roasting time, the dish exploded with a very loud bang. Fortunately, the failure came while the dish was confined in the oven. I can’t imagine the damage or injury that might have occurred had that happened on taking it out of the oven or while cooling on a hot pad.
I took digital photos of the broken dish in the oven as evidence of the incident.

The product, in the report: 9x13 glass baking dish
My 9x13 glass pyrex baking dish exploded in my oven last night. I have done much google research and see similar reports... however I DID NOT subject my dish to any of the circumstances that normally cause this sort of breakage. i know pyrex often disputes that the glassware will “explode” but I have photos of how my oven looked immediately upon opening it... and there is no way the glass could have ended up sideways and lying on the baking sheet next to it (where I was roasting vegetables) had it not literally EXPLODED. The circumstances of my baking: I placed a piece of salmon into my room temperature baking dish and put it into an oven that had been pre-heated to 400 degrees. The glass was not cold (only the fish, which is normal as you can’t let fish come up to room temperature and spoil and it had been marinating in the refrigerator for one hour). I did not place the dish on the stove top. I placed it directly into the pre-heated oven. At about 15 minutes of baking, I heard the loud bang in my kitchen, turned on the oven light, and discovered the mess. Had this happened 5 minutes later when I opened the oven door, significant injury could have occurred to me. As it was, it took a long time for the oven and all the items to cool enough for me to attempt to clean the very sharp and dangerous mess. Some of the glass was actually a fine powder left in the oven and I had to use a vaccum attachment to try and get it all cleaned out. Lastly, this was not an old baking dish, it was purchased within the last 4 years. I have followed this exact procedure to cook salmon many times without incident. I did not see any sort of cracks or damage to the baking dish prior to baking. I don’t even put them in the dish washer, I wash them by hand. I would like an explanation for this incident as your bakeware is clearly not safe and I will be throwing out all my other clear glass pyrex items due to safety concerns.

IN IT WAS SLICED POTATO WITH A COATING OF COOKING OIL. MIND YOU, I HAVE HAD THESE DISHES FOR ABOUT 5 TO 6 YEARS. AFTER COOKING FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, I TOOK THE DISH OUT OF THE OVEN AND HAD JUST PLACED IT ON TOP OF THE STOVE AND NO THE STOVE WAS NOT ON. I HAD JUST TURNED MY BACK AND A LOUD BANG SOUNDED. IT SOUNDED LIKE A GUN SHOT. THE GLASS BAKING DISH HAD LITTERALLY EXPLODED. GLASS WAS EVERYWHERE IN THE KITCHEN AND ALL THE WAY INTO THE LIVINGROOM. I HAD GLASS IN MY HAIR AND ALL OVER THE BACK OF MY SHIRT. I WAS NOT HURT, FORTUNETELY. I HATE TO THINK OF WHAT TERRIBLE THINGS COULD OF HAPPENED. I AM AFRAID TO USE THE REST OF MY DISHES AND AM TOSSING THEM IN THE TRASH. IT TOOK US (MY HUSBAND AND I) A VERY LONG TIME TO CLEAN UP AND STILL FINDING PIECES OCCASSIONALLY. BY THE WAY, THE GLASS PIECES WHERE REALLY STRANGE, THEY WHERE ALL LIKE TINY CUBES AND BALLS. I HOPE SOMETHING IS LOOKED INTO ABOUT THIS, BEFORE SOMEONE REALLY GETS HURT OR EVEN BLINDED. Opened the cupboard door, reached for dish, heard a “CRACK” and dish exploded. Nothing else was in the cupboard. Had not yet touched dish so did not get hurt. Glass everywhere, lots of small pieces with sharp edges. Best characterized as shrapnel. Sure wish there was a brand of clear glass baking dish available to US consumers that was made of borosilicate - much safer. Dish was only a couple of years old.

After one hour, I opened the oven door and the glass immediately exploded, sending hot shards across the room. Luckily, no one was hurt.

The product, in the report: Clear Glass 13X9 bake ware dish manufactured by Pyrex. Manufactured some time before 1987.
I was attempting to empty clean dishes from my dishwasher. The dishes were still somewhat warm to touch when I began. I accidentally dropped a china dinner plate approximately 12 inches over top of a Pyrex 13 X 9 glass baking dish which was also in the dishwasher. The Pyrex baking dish immediately shattered sending shards of glass 5 feet away on both the floor and adjacent counter top. I thought it was very odd because the china dinner plate that I dropped did not even chip during the incident.
I had heard recent reports that Pyrex bake ware had been known to break when exposed to extreme heat. What surprised me in this incident was that I thought this particular Pyrex baking dish was old enough to be safe. I do not believe it was made out of soda lime glass which has been reported to be less stable under extreme heat conditions. I do not know the exact manufacturing date of this bake ware, however, I acquired this Pyrex baking dish USED in 1987 and have been using it myself since then.
Thankfully, there were no injuries sustained in this incident, however, I believe a similar situation could cause sever injury to any person near the shattering product.

I had a Pyrex small baking dish explode spontaneously in my kitchen. It was sitting on my counter undisturbed. It had been used the day before to bake a casserole, but it was cleaned and had sat overnight on a drying rack. This particular dish is just over a year old and has been used maybe a total of 20 times.
I was in a different room when I heard shattering glass. I found the dish on our countertop in two large and fifty small pieces. It seemed to explode out and against our kitchen backsplash. Hopefully this is a freak occurrence, but it is still unnerving as most of the rest of our baking and storage is done with Pyrex.

About 20 minutes later, I heard ice exploding in my kitchen. I discovered that it was the glass baking dish exploding not ice. It was all over my kitchen in small gem-like pieces, small and large shards, and glass dust. It also was embedded in the brownies which we threw away. Thankfully, my son, who was sitting in the kitchen, was not hurt by the exploding glass. This dish was purchased at a grocery store and came with a red plastic lid. I believe it is called the “Easy-grab” pyrex brand.

About 40 seconds into it the bowl shattered into pieces some large some shards. The bowl was less than 1 month old purchased as a 4 piece set. The bowl was uncovered and the microwave small.
When i went to the Pyrex site it spends a lot of time trying to debunk the “myth” of exploding dishes. All i can say is that i was surprised and saddened. I left them an email and never heard from them. These things present some form of danger. It would be nice if that was acknowledged by them.

I had a 13x9 glass Pyrex baking dish and was making a pizza casserole consisting of cooked egg noodles, cooked ground beef and onions, sliced pepperoni, spaghetti sauce and cheese and had placed it in a preheated 350 degree oven to bake 25 minutes. 10 minutes into the baking time I heard a loud boom from my kitchen and went to investigate and when I looked inside the oven, the dish had exploded into hundreds of shards of glass. I contacted Pyrex and they sent me a new dish. My aunt had a similar thing happen to her months earlier while baking a peach cobbler-the glass 13x9 Pyrex glass baking dish exploded in a preheated 350 degree oven after being in there 15 minutes. Though this happened a LONG time ago I decided to report it after a friend had the same thing happen to her just days ago.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 13” x 9” Covered Baking Dish
I have had my pyrex glass bakeware set for a few months now. Today my glass dish exploded while cooking in the stove at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. The glassware was at room temperature when I placed it in the oven with three stuffed peppers for baking. I had coated the bottom of the glass with non-stick spray before placing the peppers on it. I was approaching the oven to take my dinner out when I heard a what sounded like a gunshot then the sound of shattered glass falling. I feel this should not happen especially since I was properly handling the glassware.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 9.5 inch pie plate
I purchased a Pyrex 9-inch pie plate from Bed Bath & Beyond. Removed the sticker and placed the plate in warm, soapy water. I wiped down the plate and returned it to the dishwater. A few moments later, my wife turned on water in the sink to clean her hands. The water was not so hot that she couldn’t keep her hands there but was hot enough for sanitation purposes. As the water ran she heard a popping sound. There were other, older, drinking glasses in the sink and she thought it might have been one of those pieces. She carefully put her hand in the water to let the water out when she realized that the size and shape of the broken glass couldn’t have been a drinking glass.

The product, in the report: 9x13 glass baking dish
Two nights ago, I decided to make some strawberry rhubarb fruit bars. I preheated the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and assembled the crust and fruit in a 9x13 Pyrex baking dish. I put it in the oven, and it exploded after about 10 minutes. I purchased this dish about 4 months ago. Unfortunately, the new dish was clearly defective. I had only used it 5 or 6 times before it shattered and was following the instructions on the manufacturer’s website.

The product, in the report: 3 quart and 2 quart set of Pyrex baking dishes - new style with the handles formed in the glass.
I bought a Pyrex baking dish set with 3 quart and 2 quart (new style with the handles formed in the glass) on 9-02-11. I baked a cake in the 3 quart for Thanksgiving and never used either dish since. On 4-20-12 we heard a load bang like someone had shot the house with something. We checked the house and found nothing. The next day we opened the pantry and discovered that the 3 quart baking dish had exploded. It had been sitting in the bottom of the pantry with the 2 quart sitting inside of it. There was no change in temperature or anything we can think of that could of caused it. It did not just break - it exploded into tiny pieces that were everywhere. Nobody was hurt.

The product, in the report: Glass Pyrex Baking Dish
I would like to report that a glass Pyrex dish in which I was baking fish at 350 degrees suddenly exploded in the oven for no reason after 15 minutes into the bake cycle. The dish was not subjected to temperature changes, staying at a constant 350, nor was it damaged/cracked in any way. Had I opened the oven to check the bake progress at the time this dish exploded, I may have been pulling shards of glass out of my face.
The sides of the baking dish completely separated from the bottom and small shards of glass were sent airborne across the entire oven. I have photos of the resulting dish if required.
As per the Consumer Reports investigation and recommendation, I am writing to you to report this incident. As I empty my kitchen cabinets of any semblance of glass dishware made by Pyrex, I urge you to pull this dangerous product from the market.

My husband took our 9x13 pyrex baking dish from the oven and placed it on top of the stove, to add [REDACTED] sauce, when it violently exploded into millions of shards. Luckily he was not seriously injured but, it did however damage my stove and made one heck of a mess which took 3 hours to clean.

The product, in the report: 13” x 9” Pyrex Dish
Caller purchased set of two glass baking dishes April 8th, 2012, one 13” x 9” and the other in package is square two quart size.
Caller preheated her oven to 375 degrees, placed chicken in 13” x 9” glass baking dish set timer two hours and went into living room.
She had only been in living room for approximately ten minutes when she heard a loud bang sound. She thought at first that one of her large pictures had fallen off the wall.
She went to the oven and saw that the dish she had placed chicken in had exploded with all pieces of glass still contained in oven and broiler. She opened the oven door and glass fell through the open crack to her floor.
She turned her oven off, allowed dish to cool and then cleaned oven of glass pieces. Caller estimates cleaning time for oven at approximately an hour and a half. She has saved pieces of baking dish.
She has not contacted the manufacturer yet but does plan to contact them and called CPSC after reading online that this incident had happened to others.
She would like to be reimbursed for the baking dish and for the chicken that was ruined during this incident.

The consumer baked a cake in the glassware in the oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. The range that was used was electric glass top range. The consumer removed the glass dish on a wooden board and within 15 minutes heard a loud explosion. The glass dish exploded into large and small shards and fell into the floor. Parts of some of the cake was still sitting in the glass tha did not break. The consumer placed the glass baking dish, pieces of the cake and the broken pieces into a box and returned it to the retailer. She received a full refund and voiced her concerns with the retailer.
The consumer contacted the firm around 12/27/2011 and was offered a $50.00 rebate in which she has excepted.
The consumer has discontinued using the brand of glass baking wear in fear that it could cause an injury to herself.
The consumer also states that prior to her using the baking dish she read a article in Consumer Reports (Jan 2011 issue). The report mentioned to place the hot dish on a wooden surface and not a lass or cool surface.
Purchase made a couple days before 12/25/2011.

I was attempting to bake banana bread in my Pyrex Easy Grab Glass Loaf dish. The pan was in my cupboard and was room temperature when I put into the oven. The bread batter was not really cold or hot, nor was the dish, so there was not any extreme temperature change. The bread was baking for approximately 15 minutes, when I heard a loud noise. When I looked inside the entire baking dish exploded inside the oven into a tiny pieces and shards. The banana bread was still runny and only a little ways cooked at that point. Fortunately the oven door was shut as I cannot imagine what could have happened if it was not closed. Scary to think about. When trying to clean the oven up, every larger piece of broken dish had splintered all throughout it and would just crumble when picked up.
