The product, in the report: Pyrex glass cookware 9x13”
To whom it may concern:
First, I want to say I am woefully disappointed in this product, a Pyrex 9x13” rectangular glass cookware I have owned for the past 5 years. I purchased it in 2010 when I moved into my first apartment in Maryland.
We have used this dish for many years, cooking baked macaroni and cheese with crab dishes amongst others, in various ranges of temperature, from 250 - 425 (Farenheit).
Tonight, I baked some fish, took it from the oven, and placed it onto my oven top (which was warm) and it shattered. SHATTERED. Gratefully, it did not hurt me or my husband. However, dinner was ruined. My house is at a warm 68 degrees and outside is freezing at 30 degrees (Farenheit). The kitchen was about 75 degrees, thanks to the oven.
My husband has experience in testing glass. He stated this cookware was not even tempered as evidenced by the large fragments of 9x2 and 4x4” glass sections. Tempered glass fractures into smaller particles.
Words cannot express my disappointment with this product. I resorted to Google and found COUNTLESS testimonies of similar situations. Dinners ruined. Glass particles in hands and arms. Why haven’t these products been recalled or the formula changed? What does it take?
This is gross negligence on the manufacturer and failure by external regulations, hopefully, designated by the Government for consumer safety.
In conclusion, I am throwing out all Pyrex dishes I owned, replacing them with either metal or ceramic, and ensuring my family and friends know our ordeal and encourage them to throw out their Pyrex implements into the garbage.
I will never own another piece of Pyrex glassware, so long as these reports continue to exist: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2011/january/home-garden/glass-cookware/glass-cookware/index.htm

The product, in the report: glass rectangular dish 9”x12’
(02/10/2015) The consumer stated that her daughter was baking pork loin at 375. After about 45 minutes she took the dish out and sat it on top of one of the burners. The consumer stated that all of a sudden the dish exploded.
There were no injuries.
(02/11/2015) The consumer contacted the company and advised them of what happened. The consumer was advised that another dish would be sent to her. The consumer stated that she read reports on line where this has happened before.
The consumer added this is an extremely serious matter, and before the glass dish exploded she and her daughter were both leaning over the dish checking whether the meat was done. Consumer also added glass could have entered their eyes and faces, and if a baby was in the kitchen sitting in a high chair the projectile glass missels could have seriously injured.
The consumer noted at first she thought that this was just a freak accident that perhaps a damaged batch of glassware was produced; however, when she checked Pyrex website, she was horrified to read of all of the other complaints and same circumstances. The consumer also noted this product needs to be removed from shelves and waring issued to the public before someone gravely injured.
The consumer stated she spoke with a representative from Pyrex and [rep] said they would send another dish..Conversation ended..Consumer stated she does not want another dish and has advised her family and friends not to purchase glass Pyrex ware and throw into recycling any glass Pyrex they currently have in their homes.

The product, in the report: Pyrex baking dish
To Whom It May Concern, A Pyrex pan in use to bake a chicken exploded in my oven. It had been in a 375 degree oven for about half an hour and I was adding room temperature broth to the pan. It exploded with such force that glass shards were sent flying three feet across the room. It shocked me not only that it exploded but that the glass was in so many pieces and there were so many bits and shards to contend with after the fact. Fortunately, I was not injured but the bits of glass were really tough to deal with. It was very difficult to get them up off the floor and out of the oven. In the oven, the liquid in the pan caused the glass to stick to the interior surface and I had to run an auto clean to burn off any residue so I could then be sure I got all the glass. The pieces were so tiny though that I don’t know how anyone could really be sure they got it all. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 5” x 7” baking dish Information from bottom of shattered Pyrex dish: Pyrex 7211 30 6 cups - 1.5 liter 8x6x2 inches made in USA no broiler no range top
On 1/20/15 I was cooking a port tenderloin in a 5” x 7” Pyrex baking dish. The dish was room temperature as was the tenderloin. Instruction were to cook at 450 deg for 15 minutes. I put dish in oven at ~380 deg and set timer. After approximately 8 – 10 minutes I turned dish and put a second dish in. Closed the door and heard a strange sound. Open oven to find dish had shattered. I couldn’t believe it, Pyrex isn’t supposed to ever do this.
This Pyrex dish was purchased in August 1997. (remember so exactly because we had just moved and the movers hadn’t brought our kitchen stuff yet.) I have many other Pyrex dishes, pie plates, casseroles and backing dishes that were acquired well before that time and have never seen this happen.
The submitter also provided additional information from bottom of shattered Pyrex dish:

Hurt, care not known Made Jan 20, 2015, sent to the company Jan 28, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 19, 2015
The product, in the report: Pyrex Glass Bowls
We purchased a few months back a set of Pyrex glass containers. They were only used for food storage until my wife used one to cook a casserole. It was placed in the oven at 350 for around 45’ and then removed and placed on top of the stove to cool. From another room, we heard a loud crashing noise and upon entering the kitchen were shocked to see that the bowl had shattered and exploded glass shards all over the stove and adjacent areas. I contacted the manufacturer through their website and filed an online form. I assumed they would want to know about this. I never received a response. I then tried calling their “customer care number” as listed on their website. All I ever get is a recording saying your wait time it 30’ and to call back.

The product, in the report: Pyrex oblong baking dish, approximately 10 x 15. (larger than the 9 x 13 oblong dish).
I took my Pyrex oblong baking dish (not sure of size, but larger than 9 x 13) out of the cupboard and sprayed it with non stick cooking spray in preparation for baking acorn squash. I prepared the squash, put the baking dish in a preheated 400 degree oven. Within 10 minutes, I heard a loud bang. I opened the oven door and found the dish had exploded all over the oven mostly in small, sharp shards of glass. There were two large pieces of glass under the squash. I am thankful this happened inside the oven and not on the countertop, but feel this was extremely dangerous.

I put my 15x10 pyrex pan into a 400 degrees oven - it was filled with scalloped potatoes. I had warmed the milk before pouring it over the potatoes. I covered the pan with tin foil, with the intention of taking off the tin foil halfway through to sprinkle cheese on top. After 10-15 minutes in the oven, the pan (really) exploded. I have a picture of the exploded pan

The product, in the report: Glass cookware
Caller stated that she placed the 7 cup size glass dish on the countertop next to her rice cooker at room temperature, she scooped some rice which was hot into the container. She left the room briefly and heard shattering glass which occurred approximately 2 mins. She returned to the kitchen and noticed that there were pieces of the container on the counter top and on the floor. It shattered into small and large pieces about 4 feet from the counter where the bowl was located
Caller plans on contacting the manufacturer later on 1/7/15. She feels that this glass dish is a safety hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Glass Pyrex 13x9x2 pan I have baked in for years. The only piece of the glassware that did not completely shatter has identifying information on it (Pyrex 233-R, 3 QT. 3L, No Range Top, No Broiler, Made in USA.)
January 1, 2015 I was cooking two roast porks in my oven - one in a corning ware baking dish and one in a Pyrex dish. The one roast pork was in the same Pyrex 13x9x2 pan I have baked in for years. I heard an explosion and when I went to investigate, the Pyrex baking dish had exploded in the oven spewing glass shards into both roasts and into the oven fan. The roasts were destroyed, the guests left with no dinner, I have no idea if there are glass shards in the fan and so have not been able to use my oven sense. The wait time for a repair man to come is two weeks. Far worse, had I opened the door when the baking dish exploded the results could have been catastrophic. The only piece of the glassware that did not completely shatter has identifying information on it (Pyrex 233-R, 3 QT. 3L, No Range Top, No Broiler, Made in USA.) I have had the glassware for many years and have used it to bake roast pork in an identical manner many times. I have photographs of the oven and dish.

The product, in the report: It was a clear 9X11 pyrex casserole dish. We don’t know the exact brand, but it was only a couple of years old.
We were cooking enchiladas for dinner, and we had a big pot full of vegetables on the back burner. I placed a pyrex casserole dish on the front burner, in order to scoop the vegetables into tortillas. I noticed that the burner had accidentally been turned on (to a temperature of 3/10). I turned OFF the front burner and almost immediately there was an explosion. It was an incredibly loud boom, and tiny shards of glass went flying all over the kitchen, in approximately a 4 foot radius, like shrapnel. (We even found a small shard of glass on a desk approximately 8 feet away.) We are lucky that nobody was seriously hurt and I consider this a serious safety hazard.

No one was harmed, but it was frightening and we are cleaning up a lot of glass.

The product, in the report: Pyrex brown medium sized rectangular baking pan
Last night my granddaughter and I baked a cake in one of my FAVORITE Pyrex brown glass pans that I have used for YEARS!I I took it out the oven, set it on the stove to cool, like I’ve ALWAYS done, and it exploded! My granddaughter & I are lucky to be alive! My glass Pyrex pan exploded just a few minutes after taking it out of the oven! It sent chunks and shards of glass, as well as cake, all over me, my granddaughter & my kitchen! I’m so thankful that my granddaughter only got a cut on her foot, she was less than 2 feet away from the pan! O.M.G, it literally sounded like a bomb had blown up in my kitchen! I grabbed my granddaughter and ran! I checked her all over for cuts and glass! She had a cut on her foot, thats it, thank God!, It could have easily been so much worse! And ever since last nights horrific experience, she’s scared to go in the kitchen now :/ I can’t believe this actually happened! I’ve used these pans for years! This scared the [REDACTED] out of me! I Goggled exploding pyrex, and found out this is not the 1st time this happened! I read they’ve blown up in the oven, on top of the stove, as well as not even being used, and I have several Pyrex pans, bowls, measuring cups........ I am still a little shaken from this experience. It took my husband and I almost 3 hours to clean up all the glass and there are still shards that are MELTED and lodged in my floor! I’m very upset about this and feel that the makers of pyrex should do something about this! We could have been seriously harmed or worse, killed by the flying glass. I am attaching pictures of the Pyrex pan all over my stove, counter and floor so that you can see how it literally exploded. Thank you in advance for your timely response. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

A month or two ago, I was baking fish in a pyrex baking dish in the oven at 375 degrees. It was towards the end of the process when the dish suddenly shattered in the oven. I thought it was very unusual and had no explanation. Then yesterday, I was looking something up (unrelated) at the library in an older issue of Consumer Reports and discovered that this is becoming a common problem, related to a change in formula that [REDACTED] and Pyrex are now using to make their products in a cheaper way.

Last night I baked two chicken breasts in a 9 x 13 Pyrex glass pan at 350 degrees. I had added a half a can of chicken broth and covered it with aluminum foil for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes I opened the oven and removed the aluminum foil when the dish absolutely shattered. Liquid and glass flew five feet down across my kitchen. I was not injured thank goodness.
I have attached pictures of this incident and will never purchase a glass baking dish again. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you.

The product, in the report: 13 x 9 glass baking dish PYREX
I was cooking lemon chicken at 350 degrees in a 13 x 9 Pyrex dish. The timer had went off and my daughter in law turned to assist me. She had opened the oven and I just leaned over and grabbed the dish, and IT EXPLODED!!!! What a mess. The glass shreds shot into my leg and foot along with the hot liquid from the dish splashing and burning the two of us. The larger pieces flew with such force that they cracked the glass window in my oven! All I could think of was Thank God we turned our faces away and that the children were not right there. They would of been eye level. Everyone at the table jumped up and we all tried to clean up this terrible mess. Now not only was our dinner ruined for the night, and I was out the money for the food that was just ruined, but my oven was broken. Please inform people of this warning. I have used this dish before and never had a problem. It is a little scary when you have to be afraid of something like a pyrex dish. I also need to know how I should proceed as I feel someone should make good on the damage.

We were cooking stuffed peppers in the oven on the eveing of September 11, 2014. We got a pyrex casserole dish (which was at room temperature) and placed the two stuffed peppers in the dish and put some water at the bottom of the dish per the[REDACTED]recipe instructions. We then placed the pyrex casserole dish in the oven. Once the food was done cooking, my husband went to get the dish out of the oven. When he picked it up and was pulling it out, it shattered in his hand. Fortunately he pulled his hand away in time and did not sustain any injuries.
I am a Federal Employee with NASA and my husband is a pediatrician in San Jose. There was nothing I saw that indicated that these Pyrex dishes should not be placed in the oven. I hope your agency really looks into this so that no one gets seriously hurt. It is just a matter of time before someone gets hurt unless their product is improved or safety precautions are updated on their product.

The product, in the report: Glass Cookware
Consumer reported that she have always been pleased with the cookware and dishware that was purchased from Pyrex, and have always recommended their products. However, recently she had a Pyrex glass cookware explode when pulling it out of the oven. Not only did it ruin her dinner, but it also ruined her oven. When the glassware shattered, it fell on the oven door, shattering the glass on the inner door. Luckily her one yr old was not present in the kitchen at that time, because it sent 400 degree temperature glass pieces everywhere, and was thankful she was not harmed either. She is extremely displeased and disappointed in the product in which she purchased. She would be more than happy to send pictures of this matter, and would appreciate any assistance the agency may offer in this issue. She attempted to contact Pyrex concerning this issue, and they informed her that after she sent in the glass remains that their “examiners” indicated there was a “scratch on the inside sidewall surface which was the origin of breakage. And, and that the dish broke as a result of being chilled while it was hot.” She found it interesting that they concurred that a non-visible “scratch” was the cause of the glass explosion in my kitchen. Thus, ruining my oven, and unnecessarily placing my toddler and myself in danger. They magically discovered a scratch after it exploded into tiny shards, when she didn’t see it prior to putting anything in the dish, because if she had, she would not have used the dish. Also they falsely accused her of chilling the dish while hot. It was never chilled, nor did she state anything of such. The dish broke in the oven, and that is how it broke the oven door, unless their examiners think an oven is a refrigerator.
It sounds to her, they might want to invest into better “examiners” and into a better product, because if a non-visible scratch was the cause of this incident as they stated, doesn’t sound like a very durable product. She is fully aware of Pyrex capabilities (glass grenade) and limitations (everything food related), and feels that the agency should be aware as well. She will keep in mind if she ever want to have exploding glass in my kitchen, and a broken oven again to be sure to use Pyrex, and will recommend to others of such. Also, she feels that they should make sure to add to the safety and usage, that once the product is removed from bubble wrap, the object is a consumer hazard.

The product, in the report: 8x16 Glass Pyrex Baking Dish. Dish was bought in a 2 pack at Walmart which also included an 8x8 Glass Baking Dish. Both dishes are clear with red plastic storage lids.
I had roasted vegetables in a full-length glass Pyrex dish (purchased less than a year ago) at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. I pulled the dish out and set it on the range to cool. The recipe I was using called for pouring marinade over the vegetables after taking them out of the oven, so I did that. As the liquid hit the dish, the dish exploded loudly, propelling glass and hot oil at me and within a 7 foot radius.
I understand now that one is not supposed to pour liquid into a hot Pyrex dish. However, common kitchen mistakes like that should not result in such a violent explosion of the product. It was quite scary and unsafe.

Then the Pyrex container was placed in the microwave with the ears of corn for 1 minute and then again for 1 minute 30 seconds to warm the corn. The corn was immediately removed. The Pyrex container then sat on the counter at room temp (73 degrees F) for 45 minutes. We were in our basement and heard what sounded like a crash. Nothing had fallen and we found glass shattered on the counter and all over the floor below. We presumed that the dish had exploded from changing temperatures.

The product, in the report: 9 x 13 inch Pyrex baking dish
Yesterday evening, June 28, 2014, I placed a hot 9 x 13 inch Pyrex baking dish on an unlit gas burner ring on my stove to cool. I was standing a few feet to the right at my sink when I heard a strange noise. I turned toward the stove in time to hear a bang and see the dish explode into thousands of pieces of all shapes and sizes, including some icicle-like pieces several inches long with sharp points. I was hit by several small pieces and suffered minor puncture wounds on my left hand and arm and my left foot.
There were bits of glass all over the stove, in my dog’s food and water dishes, the floor, etc. I cut my finger trying to clean up the glass on the stove. Today I’m still finding bits of glass.
I bought this baking dish at the grocery store 2-3 years ago and use it about once a month. I have other Pyrex dishes that belonged to my mother and grandmother (going back at least into the 1960s) that I use even more frequently, and have never had a problem.
I understand that the formula for the glass used in Pyrex has been changed, and learned from online research last night that exploding Pyrex is not unusual. How can a product with this much potential for injury remain on the market?

I was told to see my ophthalmologist who is [REDACTED] at eye center South, Dothan, Al. I saw Dr. [REDACTED] on March 31st and he removed a piece of glass from my right eye and said that I had a cut in my left eye on the eyeball. The product, in the report: Pyrex Portable Easy Grab, approximately 13x9x2 inches, clear glass, holes in the handles, comes with a red plastic lid.
A Pyrex baking dish shattered in my hand. It was a newer model (one with openings in the handles and it comes with a plastic lid), approximately 13 X 9 inch clear glass type. I believe it was a Pyrex Portable Easy Grab. The details leading up to the incident are as follows: About four days earlier, I baked a casserole in this dish. After the meal, I refrigerated the left overs in the casserole dish (which was by now room temperature), covering it with the red plastic lid it came with. Two or three days later when the casserole was all eaten, I soaked the dish in water in the sink overnight. The next morning I hand washed the Pyrex baking dish in warm soapy water, rinsed it in warm water and began to dry it. I had the fingers of one hand through the opening of one of the glass handles letting the dish hang down and I was drying it with a towel in my other hand. The dish did not knock against anything. With no warning the baking dish shattered into hundreds of small pieces with such a force that it sent the glass all over the kitchen where I was standing, into the adjacent dining room and through the open basement door, down the steps and into the basement itself. There was nothing left at all in my hand of the glass dish I had been holding a second before, not even the handle. The knuckles of the fingers that were holding it all had cuts and there was a cut over my eye. I had used this dish only about four times prior to this last event. It was in good condition before I used it this last time.

The product, in the report: Pyrex casserole dish, sold in a traveling serving hot/warm carrier
I had per-heated my oven to 300 degrees to put in taco shells. I went to put the tacos in and saw my Pyrex casserole dish in the oven. I pulled it out, and set it on a cookie sheet that was on the stove at room temperature. I turned back around to grab the shells to put them in and heard a loud noise and saw glass flying everywhere, including into my arm. The Pyrex dish exploded into thousands of pieces and shrapnel. I have glass EVERYWHERE!
The dish was not at a very hot temperature, nor exposed to an unusual circumstance.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Glass Baking Dish
I prepared lamb in my oven using a pyrex glass dish. As a I added more liquid to the pan, the pan violently exploded in the oven sending a stream of shards of glass out of the oven door. It is complete coincidence that I did not sustain severe injury including possible disastrous eye injuries.
I have used pyrex dishes all my life and adding liquids is a common and acceptable use of the product. However when I researched this incident, I found that my pan that was bought a couple of years ago at Walmart was NOT made like the original PYREX pan but simple just carried the label PYREX. The original PYREX was made of borosilicate and this new on is made of soda-lime glass, a much inferior products as far as thermal expansion is concerned.
What is going on here is simply that a company uses a brand name that had a great reputation cheapened it down and making it unsafe for many uses that the old pan was just fine.
This is very much similar if a company would buy the rights for [REDACTED] that has been proven to be safe for generations, and then secretly uses inferior ingredients making it unsafe for many uses. The consumer would assume that this product has the same safety record as the original but it does not. A hideous form of Bait and Switch and it is harming a lot of people.
I urge you, please stop the sale of this product in the current form before more people are getting injured.

My wife was baking au gratin potatoes in a Pyrex 9 by 12 inch clear baking dish when it exploded in the oven. Glass shards and hot potatoes and sauce were strewn about the oven. My wife’s hand was burned when she tried to slide out the oven rack and I cut myself on the glass trying to move the mess of the hot stove element.

I was using a Pyrex baking dish that I had used recently. It was purchased for our wedding last summer, so it was fairly new and I hadn’t used this one particularly much. I had put two pork chops, with a liquid glaze in the dish and preheated the oven to 360 degrees. After about half an hour, we heard a loud noise and when I opened the oven, the glass had shattered, leaving pork chops and sauce all over the interior of the oven.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 3 quart 9” by 11” dish with red cover.
Yesterday, on beautiful Easter Sunday, 4/20/14, I had a dozen family members gathered at my home for dinner and conversation. I had spent the day before preparing delectable food entrees including a labor intensive vegetable lasagna for the family vegetarians. I used the covered Pyrex 3 quart glass bakeware lasagna dish (9” by 13”) for this and cooked it on Saturday, 4/19/14. The following day I first brought the dish up to room temperature and then placed it in a 275 degree oven for about a half hour, then increased to 300 degrees for about 10 minutes before we heard the shattering noise coming from the oven! Much to my horror, as I opened the oven door I saw the glass pan had shattered into hundreds of very small and large pieces. ......needless to say the lasagna was glass ridden and inedible. I then spent the afternoon cleaning out the oven and am still finding slivers between the oven doors.
I am throughly disgusted with this product, especially in light of its’ claim to go from “”refrigerator to oven.” The material is obviously of inferior quality as the oven temperature was not even considered to be high heat!!
How do I go about getting compensated for this?

The product, in the report: Pyrex 4-quart glass baking dish
While attempting to bake a meatloaf in the oven, at 350 degrees F, my mother’s Pyrex glass baking dish shattered in the oven, and after only 20 minutes! We have used this dish for many recipes before, including meatloaf without incident. Pyrex is supposed to be oven-safe and we followed the usage instructions. I am shocked that this occurred in the oven at such a low temperature.
I am extremely disappointed as Pyrex is supposed to be a dependable brand, though I have recently read the Consumer Reports information regarding soda lime glass being less sturdy and more prone to breakage than the previously used borosilicate glass. I am very thankful that this occurred in a closed oven and that my mother was not injured.
I sincerely appreciate the CPSC looking into this matter, and hopefully you will also contact World Kitchen to report this incident, as it is extremely troubling.
Thank you very much.

The product, in the report: 8 x8 inch square pyrex glass pan
I was roasting pork chops in a Pyrex glass pan. Upon lifting the pan out of the oven, the bottom of the pan exploded and glass went flying around my kitchen along with the meat and the juices in the bottom of the pan. Luckily, no one was hurt. I did get some of the juices of the meat splattered on my pants and shoes. Luckily the pants and shoes saved me from getting burned or cut. The pan that I was using when this happened was a newer Pyrex product. This incident was not only scary but also very dangerous. Upon research, I found out that I am not the only person who has experienced this problem. Pyrex is made differently than it was years ago. Now it is made out of materials that are less expensive and appear not to be as safe.
I feel that this is a safety issue because many people could be hurt by incidents like this because they do not know all the facts about the product.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Easy Grab 3 qt baking dish Glass
Hello, I would like to share with you my terrifying experience with a new Pyrex dish that exploded on my last night. I have photos enclosed as well, fortunately the only injury was a small cut to the bag of my right hand. I recently purchased a brand new 3qt Easy Grab Pyrex baking dish at Fred Meyers in Eagle River, AK. This was to replace an older 9”x13” Pyrex dish purchased probably 10-12 years earlier, that I had left at a friends house.
Late afternoon yesterday, around 4:30 pm, I pre-heated my [REDACTED] Gas oven to 375 deg. F. I coated the pyrex dish with a pressurized spray can of coconut oil, then coated the bottom of the pan with 1/2 enchilada sauce. After various other tasks going on (typical mom multi-tasking) I finally filled the pan, covered with foil and placed it in the lower 1/3 of my oven. This was around 5:40 pm. I baked for 20 minutes, then removed the foil and baked another 2 minutes. I removed the pan and placed the pan on my cast iron stove top, which was warm due to almost an hour of preheating the oven, and something I have done dozens of times with my other Pyrex dishes (I have a lot of photos of my food). I removed one enchilada to serve to my son, then I moved 2 feet to the left of the range to clean dishes, when 5 minutes later there was a loud explosion and I felt something hit the back of my right hand. I was shocked and scared when I turned around and saw the glass shards strewn about my kitchen! Thank goodness my son and 2 dogs were not within 6 feet of this incident, or more serious injuries would have occurred besides the small cut to the back of my right hand.
I cleaned up the rest of the glass shards, but was very disturbed that this would occur. I am a very experienced home cook, and have been using Pyrex safely, or so I thought for over 38 years. and have never encountered this problem before. Needless to say, I will be throwing all of my Pyrex into the trash tomorrow, new or old, I won’t expose myself or my family to that risk again. I have seen a friend place a hot Pyrex dish into a cold sink of water and seen the glass shatter, but not explode in this violent matter. I certainly have never, nor would have treated my glass dishes this way so I was surprised and very angry to have had this happen.

The product, in the report: Pyrex rectangular casserole dish; blue tinted glass; received as a gift in 2002
My husband and I were baking chicken in the oven last night and as my husband was about to pull it out of the oven, the pyrex dish we were using basically shattered all over our oven and sounded like an small explosion. We are extremely thankful that he hadn’t yet opened the oven door as he could have been severely injured with the large shards of glass.
I would like to point out that prior to putting the dish into the oven, the glass dish had been stored at room temperature; my husband let the oven pre-heat before even placing it in the oven; the liquid was added prior to baking the chicken; and the oven temperature was only 375. Even more puzzling is that it happened after 45 minutes of baking.
We received the pyrex dish for a wedding gift in 2002.

Her oven was set at 375 degrees for her vegetarian roast that usually called for 400 degrees but she wanted to bake more slowly.
The dish was not taken straight from refrigerator and the vegetarian roast was partially frozen.
She preheated her oven, placed her food in the oven and after approximately fifteen minutes she heard what sounded like a large but strange pop sound.
She returned to her kitchen and saw that the dish had exploded while in the oven.
The glass lid did not explode.

A glass Pyrex baking dish (9x13) shattered and broke in my oven while baking a cake. As the oven cook timer went off, I opened the oven door to check the cake, I closed the oven door and went to get pot holders to handle the hot dish. It was then that I heard a crashing noise in the oven. I opened the oven door to see my cake in the now shattered dish, on the rack I had set it on originally and pieces of broken glass at the bottom surface of my oven. The dish had exploded as a few pieces of glass were stuck between the oven rack and the interior side wall of the oven.
My oven was used at 350 degrees, on a routine bake function, for 35 minutes as the recipe had called for.

On December 3rd, 2013 caller’s daughter had been baking for twenty minutes in a 3 quart wine colored baking dish with oven set at 350 degrees. No model number is available.
She took dish out of the oven with dry hot pads and set it on another dry hot pad which was on the table.
Caller was in the living room and heard a pop sound, she went into the kitchen to ask what the sound was and was advised by her daughter that the baking dish had exploded, the entire bottom portion is in one piece but all four sides exploded.
Almost all of the exploded glass remained on the 40 x 60 table.
Caller’s daughter said that all seemed fine when she removed the dish from the oven and walked the three to four feet to the table but as quickly as she sat the dish down the sides exploded.
The dish belongs to the caller who has had it and baked in it for about ten years until this incident.
She is reporting this incident as an alert to the public.

The product, in the report: Pyrex® 4 Quart Oblong Baking Dish
I had a Pyrex casserole dish in the oven at approximately 350 degrees for about 15 minutes to re-heat Thanksgiving leftovers. My apartment was about 70 degrees, and I removed the casserole dish from the oven and placed it on top of two burners on the stove top that were off. It was sitting there for about 15-20 seconds before the glass suddenly shattered with a loud crash, causing tiny pieces of glass to shoot all over the stove, surrounding counter top, and the floor. I do not believe I used the bake ware in a manner conflicting with the instructions, and there was no extreme temperature change. I am now afraid to use my Pyrex in general for fear of injury. With the exception of a small cut on my fiance’s arm, we escaped major injury, but I consider ourselves lucky.
My sister’s roommate experienced the same thing a few months ago using a Pyrex measuring cup which exploded in his hand. I don’t know the details of his experience, but I am starting to wonder if this is a more widespread product defect as opposed to consumer misuse.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 233-S Portable 3 Qt Clear Ribbed Glass baking dish
Into a pre-heated 425’ oven I placed a 12”x9” Pyrex brand glass baking dish (one of the “portables” line, but it’s no longer sold - got it about 8 years ago?).
In the pan were 2 pumpkin halves (small) and about a cup of water.
About 40 minutes later I removed the pan, using potholders, and placed it gently on the stovetop (metal burner grill), which was at room temperature (80’?). I noticed the water had boiled away.
AND I realize that the instructions say “place it on a dry hot pad” (NOW I realize this...).
Anyway, I placed it down and almost instantly it shattered into thousands of pieces, scattering in the stove, under it, on the counter and on the floor near my dog, 5 feet away. Luckily no one was harmed, but it was only chance.
This, while “contrary to their safety warning” is NORMAL KITCHEN USE as most consumers remove items from the oven and place on the immediately above stovetop.....a product shouldn’t be sold that can’t withstand such a COMMON use! It’s like having car instructions that advise against idling longer than 30 seconds. Sure, you COULD read and follow that very specific instruction, but no one is going to remember to do that!
I strongly urge that Pyrex and other glass bakeware sold in the US be subject to higher scrutiny and be tested against NORMAL CONSUMER USE before allowing it to be sold.

Was baking tilapia in Pyrex 13 x 9 glass pan at 375 degrees for 15-18 minutes. Took the pan out of the oven with a potholder and in the air the pan exploded. I received a 1 inch laceration on my foot along with some scrapes which required an emergency room visit for suturing. There was no obvious extreme temperature change unless the air counts. The product was purchased at Kohls about 6 months ago.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 9x13 baking dish, approximately 1 year old
I was roasting a turkey breast at 325 degrees in a 9x13 Pyrex baking dish that had been used many times before with no problems. After it had been in the oven for 2 hours, I heard a loud crashing noise, and the baking dish had shattered all over the oven. The resulting pieces of glass ranged in size from tiny, miniscule shards to large chunks (about 4 inch x 4 inch). Luckily, no one was injured, as the oven door was closed and all the broken glass was contained within the oven.

I had a Pyrex dish in the sink. It had been full of water overnight soaking. I emptied the water and set it back in the sink. Then I heard a crack and the corner fell off. Nothing was touching it. I picked up the dish and set it flat in the garbage can. Within two minutes I heard a loud crack and looked in the can. The dish had shattered into a million pieces. It spooked me! There was absolutely no reason it should have done that. No temperature issue was involved at all. It was not being touched at all, just sitting the garbage can. After seeing it being common I wanted to report it. It came as a set of three. I’m considering throwing the others away to avoid an accident.

The product, in the report: Glass baking dish -- large size, rectangular shape, commonly used for lasagnes and casseroles
Dear CPSC Representatives,
I am writing to report a shattering incident with a Pyrex glass baking dish on Sept. 24/2013. The empty dish was at room temperature, just taken out of a kitchen cupboard, and set on an Epicurean brand cutting board on a laminate kitchen counter. At the time of the shattering, it was located on the counter beside (not on) a 350 degree oven where food was cooking.
Right before the shattering, there was a cracking sound and then the dish shattered with explosive force onto the counter and kitchen floor. I was a few feet away from the dish when it happened -- I was hit by a few stray pieces of glass, and my vinyl floor was damaged.
I do not think that any baking/cooking glassware with shattering properties like this should be allowed in North American kitchens. It was a mistake to manufacture it and all glassware items of this formulation should be recalled.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Pyrex 13x9 glass baking dish
I received a 13x9 glass Pyrex baking dish. I used it once before without incident. Today I baked a cake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. I took the cake out of the oven & placed it on the top of the stove to cool. About 30 minutes later I heard exploding glass. When I got to the kitchen, the Pyrex dish had exploded, sending shards of glass out over the kitchen & stove top & into the food. The glass shards ranged from larger pieces under the food, medium pieces over the floor & counter tops, to tiny pieces as well. A very dangerous situation. When investigating this further online it was disturbing to read so many articles that indicate this product is safe, & the exploding glass was most likely due to consumer error. This was definitely not the case. Pans are kept in a cupboard. There was no “thermal shock”. Oven was 350 for 40 minutes. Cooling was done on top of the oven. I own Pyrex that was used continually by my mother & grandmother without incident for decades. I am grateful I was not in the kitchen when it happened. I am also grateful I was not holding a hot casserole. And especially that children were not in the area. Reports seems to indicate there are so few reports filed, it must not really be an issue. Thereby, my reporting my incident. I do not believe this is an isolated, rare occurrence.

On two separate occasions Pyrex baking dish exploded. The most recent incident occurred likely because of operator error: I used the dish in the broiler then placed on cool stovetop. About 5 minutes later the dish exploded sending shards six feet away. The prior incident was more unusual. I prepared dinner in a room temp. baking dish and placed in fridge for later. Shortly later when I opened the fridge to retrieve another item the baking dish “ popped”, glass everywhere.

I want to report that my glass, 9x12 in. Pyrex baking dish shattered in the oven today. I had it set to 400 degrees and the pan had only been in the oven 5-10 minutes. I have used this pan for several years to make the same cornbread recipe. The inside of my oven was covered in glass and batter and we had to unscrew the bottom plate to clean and get all the glass out. It took about an hour. I want to report it because this is the second time it has happened to me. Last time it was Thanksgiving 2012. I thought it was a freak accident then, but after today I realized I need to stop using glass bakeware. Just wanted to report the issue. Thanks, [REDACTED]

The consumer says that she turned the oven on at 425 degrees, she lined the pan with foil and placed two frozen fish fillets in the oven that was preheated for a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later she heard a loud crash.
The pyrex dish shattered completely inside the oven. None of the glass pieces reached the kitchen floor as the explosion was contained within the oven. Only when she went to open the oven door did the shards of glass start to fall on the floor.
She did not see any visible damage inside the oven. The consumer used the same pan in the exact same manner at least a dozen other times. She contacted the manufacturer via email and got a number to contact someone directly. She was not able to reach them before their offices had closed.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 18 piece storage with color coordinated lid
On July 28, 2013 I purchased an 18 piece set of Pyrex from my local Costco (703653 item #). During week, I cooked some cabbage and put remaining leftovers in the square Pyrex piece. On Friday, August 2, I was cooking a dinner of surf and turf for my husband, mother and myself. I decided to have the cabbage leftovers as a vegetable to go with our dinner. As I wasn’t sure if the Pyrex could go into the microwave for reheating, I goggled the question on my [REDACTED]. Basically it read that Pyrex could be used for heating in the microwave. However as I read other sources, the subject of Pyrex shattering also came up. I decided I didn’t want to take a chance so I took out half of the cabbage and microwaved it in another bowl. The Pyrex and the extra cabbage was left sitting on the countertop, untouched. As we had just sat down to dinner, there was a loud bang of glass shattering behind me. We turned around and the Pyrex container had literally exploded/shattered sending glass everywhere. This piece of Pyrex had not been heated at all, as a matter of fact it was still cold from the refrigerator. The only heat in the room was a little humidity from boiling corn on the cob approximately 12 feet away. We had cooked both the filet and lobster on our outdoor grill. As dinner was late in the evening, I waited to call the manager at Costco until Saturday morning. I gave him the item #703653 and told him what had happened so he could take the product off the shelves. I returned the Pyrex with some other items on Monday morning and again mentioned to refer the returned pyrex to the manager, as a safety precaution. Please see enclosed picture that I will be sending to you. Note: I tried attaching photo that I had taken, if you don’t receive photos with this report, please contact me and I will send you the 3 photos that were taken of incident.

I was cooking a pork tenderloin in my 11x7 glass Pyrex dish, which I have done many times in the past. After the dish had been in the oven cooking for about 35 minutes, I went to take it out of the oven to check on the pork. Midway between grabbing it in the oven with a potholder and placing it on top of the oven, I heard a popping noise and the glass completely shattered in my gloved hand. The pork fell to the floor and glass pieces and shards went all over my kitchen (floor, counters, stove top, table, etc..). My 14 month old son was standing in the kitchen with me and, although he was a safe distance from the oven, he was amidst all of the glass. Luckily and thankfully he was not hurt. He is traumatized though as he points to his feet and the oven a lot since it happened. Pyrex is a popular household name and I would not expect this to happen.

I purchased these Pyrex dishes in the fall of 2012. They have been used just a few times, no more than 10. This particular dish was used and placed in dishwasher over a week ago, and was placed in my cabinet, with 2 other glass casseroles on top, as usual.
I was taking a shower and my son was in the other room watching tv, when we both heard a loud sound. He said it sounded like something fell or broke, but we didn’t see anything until later that day when I was fixing dinner, I noticed tiny pieces of glass on the counter. When I opened the cabinet, there were literally thousands of pieces of glass everywhere . There was no one near the cabinet, and the dish hadn’t been used in over a week

The product, in the report: Pyrex rectangular 9 x 13 glass baking pan
Last week I was visiting my newly married daughter in her new home. We got out some of her new Pyrex bake ware to make brownies. We chose the 9 x 13 glass pan. We followed all package directions and put the brownies in the oven at 325 degrees and set the timer. Before the timer went off, I checked the brownies and they looked finished so I took them out of the oven and set the pan on top of the stove. After several moments, I got a butter knife out to loosen the brownies from the edges of the pan. I touched the first edge gently several times and all of a sudden the pan exploded with glass flying everywhere. It hit me in the chest and face and flew all over the kitchen. If a child had been standing next to me at the stove, there would have been severe injuries.
Needless to say, I was shocked at what happened and my daughter came running when she heard the huge popping noise. We cleaned up the glass and were wondering what could have possibly caused this to happen. After cleaning up, I looked online and found many people reporting problems with Pyrex that broke in this manner. I posted a picture of the broken glass and brownies on my FB account and the next day one of my friends sent a message that the same thing happened to her that day!
People need to know about this hazard waiting to explode in their kitchens!! I took several photos and saved some of the glass.
There needs to be major warnings going out about Pyrex glass bake ware.

The product, in the report: 8” x 8” baking dish (soda lime composition)
The baking dish had been in the oven for approx. 10 - 15 minutes on Broil setting and then the temperature was reduced to 425 for 5 - 10 minutes. The consumer removed it from the oven and was placing the contents to another dish, when it exploded. The consumer was using a metal utensil to transfer the food from that dish. Glass was sprayed over a 6’ radius. The consumer did not sustain any injuries.
The glass was so small that the consumer discarded it.
Same day, the consumer sent the mfr. an email about her incident and she received a response. The consumer said that it was a “form email”, which thanked her for taking the time to write to them and advised her to call them. The email also indicated that she might be asked to return the product.
The consumer also called the mfr., but their automated system indicated that there may be more than a 5 minute wait and she hung up. She plans to try them again later.
NOTE: The consumer saw some of the videos on Consumer Reports and said that hers was much worse.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 13 x 9 glass casserole dish
We had preheated our oven to 400 degrees (did NOT use the broiler). After setting in the taco shells filled with our beef, green chili and bean mixture, we covered them with cheese and set them in the oven for 10 minutes. After the meal had been in the oven for 7 minutes, we heard a loud sound come from the oven. It sounded like a cookie sheet that warps in the oven. We opened the oven to see a completely shattered Pyrex casserole dish (and a ruined meal). We turned off the oven.

The product, in the report: Pyrex dish about 9 or 10 inches by 14 inches clear glass
I prepared my ingredients as instructed on the box mix for my scallop potato and placed it in the preheated oven at 450 as instructed. About 8 minutes after placing dish on the middle rack of my oven, the dish exploded inside the oven. I was standing in front of the oven and turning the chicken I was also cooking. I was so lucky I had not opened the oven to stir the potatoes yet like I usually would do. I could have been seriously injured and blinded by the glass pieces that flew all over the oven, not to mention the hot food that also went flying all over the inside of the oven. I have taken pictures and asked a neighbor to come over to verify what it looks like.

Purchased a new Pyrex baking dish last night and when I pulled it from the oven from it’s first use it literally exploded shards of glass and boiling liquid up to 10 ft around my kitchen. The product, in the report: Pyrex custard dish. Made in the USA/Microwave safe 6 oz. 463 is stamped on the bottom
I heated water in a Pyrex made in the USA custard dish. It was a little over 1/2 full for 35 seconds. I removed it from the microwave and it exploded in my hand. I see you are urging them to review and wanted you to have my report. This is a very dangerous product. Thankfully, I was the only one in the kitchen and children/pets were not in there. I did not require medical treatment. Liquid was on my face and hands. Glass exploded everywhere.

The glass exploded into many different sized pieces: from large knife-like pieces to small pea-sized pieces. No injury occurred.

The product, in the report: 9x13 glass Baking dish
Consumer made dinner and used the dish to bake a potato casserole. The dish was placed on the back burner of the range. The consumer’s (21 year old) niece went to warm up a baby bottle using the stove and accidentally turned on the burner where the baking dish was. She immediately turned off the burner and tried to move the dish off the range. However the glass dish exploded as she sat the dish down.
The consumer and her family cleaned up the glass shards throughout the kitchen. There were no damages but the consumer did cut her thumb on her left hand cleaning up the glass. The consumer ran her thumb under cold water, and ointment then bandaged it up.
The consumer emailed the manufacturer last night but she has not spoken with anyone as of yet.

The product, in the report: Pyrex casserole dish, likely 9 by 6 although could not see dimensions, dish too broken.
I’ve used Pyrex casserole dish for a couple of years in this exact same manner although last night for some reason, when I removed the dish from the oven and placed it on the same cutting board I always do it exploded with a loud ‘crack!’ into dozens of pieces of elongated sharp glass. Some of the dish was reduced to glass dust on my counter. Searing-hot pieces hit my legs (which were thankfully clothed) and our dog ran forward to eat them since things that hit the floor while I’m cooking are usually edible, not hot shards of glass. Thankfully I kept her from touching the hot glass with her mouth but I burned my hands picking them up quickly. I do have images of the dish.

The product, in the report: pyrex blue square baking dish about 10 x 10”
We have used pyrex baking dishes for years and never had a problem. A few days ago, my husband used one of our favorite pyrex dishes to bake something. It was in the oven for about 20 minutes and he opened the door to squeeze some lemon juice on the crab cakes. He closed the door and within seconds we heard a horrible crashing sound. I was in another room of the house and I heard it and thought something was falling out of our cupboards. I ran into the kitchen and he realized that the entire pyrex baking dish had exploded. He was just lucky that he had closed the oven door when he did and that the glass in the door didn’t shatter too. It took him forever to clean all of the glass out of the oven after it cooled off and we are very upset.
We have many pyrex products and we are now throwing all of them out! My husband doesn’t even want to donate them to Goodwill because they are too dangerous.
I am now in the process of ordering new, safe products on-line to replace all of our pyrex and it will be expensive. I’m replacing a large covered casserole, 3 rectangular bakers, one square baker, 2 pie plates, 2 loaf pans, 2 oval bakers, measuring pitcher and too many different sizes of bowls to count. We are not happy about any of this and feel pyrex should be taken off the market because it is so unsafe.
