Hurt, no treatment Made Mar 14, 2014, sent to the company Mar 24, 2014, published by CPSC Apr 7, 2014
The product, in the report: Fitbit force
I have experienced a burn from the fitbit force I purchased about a month ago. The burn has not healed even without wearing the device. I began to experience this on March 5th, 2014 which began with itching and slight irritation. I continued to wear the device thinking the irritation was due to perspiration and cleanse the band completely with bleach wipes. The rash began to enlarge slightly and the skin began to blister, more like a burn. This is located on the outside of my left wrist located under where the charging port is on the force device. I have experienced burning and stinging when the area is cleaned or rubs on my sleeves.
I plan to contact the company and preceed in the recall/refund process.

The product, in the report: It’s the FITBIT Flex - rash on my top wrist. 2 red swelts when placed band on my wrist. The product was not activated or charged. Have pic if needed
Got the FITBIT FLEX as a gift. I know the FORCE was recalled but the Flex should also be recalled. I have model # FB401BK and just placed it on my wrist this morning. The Flex was not on or set-up or anything. I merely strapped the band and got an instant allerigic reaction. Two red swelts on my wrist. It might be the actual rubber band and fastner that’s the problem not the battery.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force (black)
I purchased the Fitbit Force at the end of January and wore it everyday since. I didn’t have any irritation for over a month, until I took it off last Thursday (3/6) and noticed a rash developing (picture attached). It got worse over the next couple days, and my wrist has been red and extremely itchy. It has been over a week since I’ve taken the Force off and it is still there. I do not have a nickel allergy and am concerned as to what is causing this issue for so many consumers.

The product, in the report: wrist watch/ bracelet pedometer that showed the time amount of calories and steps taken each day
I purchase fitbit force and wore it to log the amount of activity and calories that I was burning in a day. I wore the force as a watch on my right wrist.. After about 9 days I noticed the beginning of a small red mark with in the next two days the small mark grew to a large red burn rash on the outside of my wrist and another mark was on the inside of my wrist where the product had moved in the middle of the nigh while I was sleeping. Since removing the force the rash has not resolved in fact I now have an even larger area that before. I now am experiencing burning and itching as well as flaky skin.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force
I received the Fitbit Force as a Christmas present. I wore it every day and after approximately 10 weeks of wearing I had a rash on my inside wrist where the metal part of the band rested on my arm. It looked like poison ivy. I looked it up online which is where I saw the information about the recall. It is 2 weeks later and the area on my arm looks like a burn.

Rash started like sweat bumps...switched arms....developed on other arm...then both resembled burns....quit wearing fitbit...as days progressed I developed a rash all over arms, legs, stomach, neck. Itching was out of control. I started with a doctor on March 6 who advised me about the fit bit recall. Ended up in urgent care on March 9th due to unbearable itching....and then on March 12th had an emergency appoint with dermatologist. Bumps are continuing to spread, (even to the palms of my hands). No relief at this time. Since initial doctor appointment I have been on multiple medications including [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and topical creams. As of yesterday, I was taken off all except [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force - Wrist fitness tracker
Circular rash on wrist at location wearing Fitbit Force. Had been wearing product for 1.5 months before it appeared. Had rash for ~1 week and continued to wear the product. After that time removed band. Rash has not gone away although no contact with product for over 2 weeks. I do not have any nickel allergies or typical react to any sensitivities with a rash. My boyfriend developed same rash about also ~1.5 months after wearing his own personal Fitbit Force. He continued wearing the product for ~ a month. His rash worsened and developed blisters. He switched the wrist he wore the product on and began developing a rash on that side within 24 hours. Since stopping using the product ~2 weeks ago, his rash continued to worsened for a week and then has gradually been healing.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force, large, black
I purchased my Fitbit Force on 1/3/14 and began wearing it on 1/6/14. On 2/22/14 I woke up with a rash on my wrist under the charging port that looked like a poison ivy. It was red, bumpy and itchy. I moved my Force a little further up my arm however the rash seemed to be getting worse. I talked to a coworker about it a few days later and she told me she saw something about a recall for the product. Sure en ought I did some research and found out other users were experiencing the same issues. I immediately removed the device and discontinued use. To this date I have never received any communication from Fitbit regarding the recall. It’s 2 1/2 weeks after I removed the device and my wrist still has not cleared up. It has went through a few stages, peeling, dry/rough etc... I requested a return kit and mailed out my unit today.

After purchasing a fitbit force in December of 2013, and wearing it for 2 months the skin on my wrist became extremely irritated and broke out in a painful and itchy rash with raised blistering. This rash lasted roughly two weeks even with the use of cortisone and antibiotic creams. I switched it to my right wrist, not knowing that the fitbit was the cause, and within 5 days my right wrist also broke out. I took it off two weeks ago when u saw news reports saying that it was caused by the device. I have since sent mine in as part of the recall.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force
I purchased a Fitbit Force activity tracker and began wearing it on December 15, 2013. On February 26, 2014 I noticed a rash starting to form under the tracker’s band, adjacent to my wrist bone. I stopped wearing the tracker on February 26, 2014 and as off today, March 12, 2014, the rash has not gone away. It has, however, stayed localized and not spread. The rash formed small blisters and was itchy, but I didn’t scratch the area for fear that it would get worse. I realize there is a recall on this product and have filled out the appropriate paperwork to return the tracker, but it was also recommended that a report be filed with the CPSC.

The product, in the report: Fitness Tracker (Arm/Wrist Band)
I received a FitBit Force Activity Tracker for Christmas. It is a wrist band that tracks fitness activities and sleep patterns. Everything was fine for a while, until about last week... Where I noticed 3 little red bumps on my arm. I heard about the ‘skin irritation’ problem a few days before, so I switched the FitBit to my other wrist. I have no allergies and nothing has happened before, so I tried to give it another shot.. The next day... The little red dots were on my right arm now. They are barely noticeable, but I decided to just keep the FitBit in my pocket. The problem is... The tiny little red dots, the size of a pen mark, kept growing and getting worse. It’s now 8 days later and the ‘rash’ grew to the size bigger than a Quarter. The area sticks outward, like there’s something underneath it, like puss or something. I’m too grossed out to find out for sure. It looks as if I was burned in a fire or something. The skin texture is hard, bumpy, and kind of resembles the skin of a Reptilian. My Right Arm, has multiple infected areas. The biggest is the size of a nickel. The smallest looks like the original marks that I found the first time. The rashes are spaced out from each other and growing by the day. 2 Days Ago... The ‘rashes, begin itching and burning at times, nothing severe at first.
Today, however, the itching and burning are severe. I consulted a Pharmacist after he noticed the burns on the wrists. He advised me that this is not a skin irritation or rash, and after some advice he had me make an appointment with my Doctor.
I now have a Doctor Appointment scheduled, not only from what he told me, but also from people around me (both friends and strangers) who were concerned at the nasty progression of this even after I stopped wearing it shortly after I discovered the rash/burns.
Again, I have NO Allergies... And Wore the Product for months without any problems. Then out of the blue... It happens. This is no ordinary skin rash or skin irritation...

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force, black, size small
I was wearing the Fitbit Force on my left wrist (day and night, removing only for showers). AFter 37 days, I noticed some small bumps on my wrist (on the top/outside of my wrist). They were small, not red, not painful, not itchy. Because I knew that a small % of people were having significant rashes from the Fitbit, I removed my Fitbit as soon as I saw the bumps (at approx 10pm on 3/10). The next morning (7am 3/11), the bumps had become a little larger and were red. On the evening of 3/11 the bumps had become even more red (and seem to increase in redness when my wrist is warm, and become a little less red when my wrist is cool). Still no pain and itchiness. The red bumps are in an area the size of a quarter.
I have never had nickel allergy problems. The day before I noticed the rash, I did get my wrist/fitbit a little wetter than I ever have before (water splashed on my wrist and I couldn’t dry it right away while I was cooking dinner).

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force health and fitness tracker
I started using my Fitbit Force as intended - wearing it essentially 24/7 but for when I showered, washed dishes, or charged it - on November 14, 2013. Weeks later, I woke up with what I thought was a spider bite or bug bite directly under the charging port/altimeter area of where the Force generally sat on my wrist, just above the wristbone. I removed the Force within a couple of days. On appoximately 1/17/14, I Googled “fitbit force rash” and learned that I was not alone in suffering a reaction to this product: those initial two little red bumps eventually developed into an open wound that itched, oozed and bled, finally dried and flaked/peeled, and two months later still presents as reddened skin with a texture different than the rest of my skin.

The product, in the report: An activity tracker built into a wristband that you wear on your wrist to count your steps, sleep patterns, flights of stairs climbed. It is a rubber-like wristband with the tracker/pedometer built into it and has a metal charging port on the side that rests against your wrist with some screws and two vent (?) holes and furrows leading to the outer edge of the band.
I received a Fitbit Force activity tracker for Christmas. I began wearing it on my left wrist on or around 12/25/13. I did not wear it at night except for about 4-6 nights so it was on only during the day for 9-12 hours. Around the 23 of Feb. I noticed a “rash” consisting of small blisters on the left topside of my wrist a bit above where the charging stainless steel is located. It grew increasingly red, swollen, and blistered even after I removed the Force wristband and no longer wore it. It is still present. On the 5th of March I put the Force back on my wrist for just less than an hour to try it on before I sent it back to the company for the voluntary recall. After about 50 minutes I could see the former rash spot on my wrist becoming BRIGHT red and blisters growing out from the boundaries of the previous rash outline. I immediately removed the Force and had a raised blister (approx. 1/16-1/8” high from the skin) in the exact shape of the charging connector “hole”. This blister eventually flattened out to the level of the surrounding skin 6 hours later. The rash/blisters have remained even though there is no longer any contact with the item. I am not allergic to metal, latex, or virtually anything else except for Texas Mountain Cedar. I do not believe this is a nickel allergy as it has not lessened once the contact seized.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force; slate grey; size large.
I got a slate colored FitBit Force (size large) for Christmas as a gift and loved it. In January, my mother mentioned that there were some reported issues with a rash. I checked it out and saw that FitBit was reporting that this was a very small number of people being effected. Since (1) I had been wearing it for several weeks at that point, and (2) I have never had sensitive skin or any notable skin reactions or rashes, I noted the issue but kept wearing the Force. On February 24 (two months after I started wearing the Force), I noticed a few small bumps on my wrist where the metal charging port of the Force sits. By the end of the week, I had a noticeable red rash and immediately discontinued use. Since then, the rash has gotten significantly worse, so much so that it’s now very raised, irritated and oozing. It’s honestly pretty disgusting, and I’ve left it alone entirely (no itching or self-medicating).
Today, I woke up and took one look at it and decided I needed to see a dermatologist. It looked awful. I lucked into an appointment with the dermatologist this morning. She said it appeared to be a severe case of contact dermatitis, but she was skeptical that it was a nickel allergy and was surprised and puzzled at the fact that it has kept getting worse even after I discontinued use of the Force. She prescribed some potent topical steroid cream and asked that I check back with her in a week.
I’m really disappointed by this whole experience. I’ve never bought a product from a reputable company, used that product exactly as instructed, and had it cause me a health issue significant enough that I was forced to take time off of work to see a doctor and get medication prescribed to treat it. Moreover, I’m really unsatisfied with FitBit’s reaction to this issue. In telling its customers that only a small percentage of Force users were encountering this issue, I think the company misled us, either purposefully or unintentionally. Either way, I don’t think simply offering to refund the purchase price of the Force is an acceptable response.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force is an apparatus worn on the wrist that tracks activity and provides a detailed report wirelessly.
I purchased a Fitbit Force in January of this year. I developed a rash on my right wrist within about a week. Thinking I had it on too tight, I moved it to my left wrist where I developed a rash within a couple of days. I took the Force off, however, the rash continued to spread in both wrists. It looked bubbly with blisters similar to a second degree burn. The rash spread to about an inch and a half wide an covered the entire surface between my wrist bones. I have pictures I would be happy to forward to you. It has been nearly two months. The rah is gone but I have scars on both wrists. The lack of communication or action on the part if Fitbit is incomprehensible to me. They have been aware if the severity if these “burns” yet continue to dismiss it as contact dermatitis or a reaction to nickel and that only a small percentage of people have had a reaction. They have done a voluntary recall which has not been widely communicated.

The product, in the report: Activity tracker - wear it on your wrist 24/7 and it tracks your activity. It also at night tracks your sleep.
I was on the second round of orders after the release date. Purchased my FitBit Force directly from fitbit.com. It arrived and I began using it on 11/20. Mid December is when I started experiencing the skin irritation. Thought it might have been a metal reaction. Googled fitbit skin irritation and at that time found nothing out there (didn’t know about the community discussion on the FitBit sight). I wore [bandages] on my arm to cover the itchy rash while still wearing it and it just kept getting worse. I contacted Fitbit who said that it was a nickel reaction. I then decided to wear it in my pocket because i really like the product. I saw a medical profession and they said to use a hydrocortizone cream to help. That started the healing process, but it was horrible looking. I tried to keep it covered because it was oozing and not pretty. Those that did see it were just amazed and in shock. I then had 2 people forward me articles related to the skin irritations that were being reported and I knew I was not alone and knew it was not me having a reaction. At that time, my leg developed the itchy rash from wearing it in my pocket. Not as severe, but still got worse before getting better. So, it is able to affect you through a layer of material. It is now 3/6 - two month later. There is a scar on my arm and the rash is still healing on my leg.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force FB402BKS – small black
I purchased a Fitbit Force at Target on 2/10/14. I began wearing it on my left wrist on 2/11/14. I wore it continuously until 2/22/14, other than removing it for a couple of hours to charge (2/13 & 2/19). I noticed itchy, red bumps on my left wrist on 2/21/14. On 2/22/14, the bumps had turned into a large, swollen cluster of small blisters. I stopped wearing the Fitbit Force on that day (2/22/14). The patch of affected skin continued to grow and became more swollen, with a constant itching and burning sensation. I have not worn the product since 2/22/14. It is now 3/5/14 and this skin affliction has not resolved, or even improved, at all. There seems to be some sort of substance surrounding the contacts where the battery charger connects to the battery. This substance appeared after I charged it for the 2nd time (2/19/14). According to the Fitbit forums, many people are experiencing the same thing. The pictures of the affected skin that other people have posted look like what I am experiencing. I would like to know what exactly is causing this issue. It certainly doesn’t seem like this many people would be experiencing “contact dermatitis,” as has been suggested by Fitbit.

On the morning of 1/25/14, I saw that I had developed a 1/2 inch by 2 inch area of redness, swelling, and blistering on my left wrist, under where I wore the Force. I removed it immediately and began using 1% hydrocortisone cream, but the area grew and the redness and blistering increased for two weeks. There was some pain and itching also. It was seen by my husband, who is an MD, and who said that it looked like some kind of contact dermatitis. Now, after 5 1/2 weeks, it is almost gone, but the area has scarred. I tried to wear the Force on my right wrist, but an area of redness and blistering developed there immediately so I removed it again. That area was not as severe and has healed with no scarring.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force activity + sleep tracker Fitbit trackers are the first all day activity trackers to offer Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, delivering real-time stats to your smartphone or computer without you doing a thing. Syncing occurs automatically any time Force is within about 20 feet of the wireless sync dongle and relatively motionless. The dongle plugs into your [REDACTED] or PC’s USB port. Syncing and uploading require use of the free Fitbit Connect application. Force uses a MEMS 3-axis accelerometer that measures your motion patterns to determine your calories burned, stairs climbed, distance traveled, steps taken, and sleep quality. Its altimeter also measures floors climbed. The Force also contains a cylindrical vibration motor, which allows it to vibrate when alarms are set to go off.
After 7 weeks of wearing the fitbit activity tracker I developed a burn reaction on my wrist directly under what looks to be the wifi port. I stopped wearing the device immediately. The skin tissue damage continued to get worse for two weeks. The bumps turned to blisters then to an open wound. I saw a doctor in my PCP practice and was prescribed a steroid cream which seem to help close the wound. Two weeks later my wrist has not healed. I wore and used the tracker as directed by the manufacturer. I am very concerned about what substance caused the burn and potential long term effects including but not limited to auto immune responses. To date the company has not been forthcoming with specific information

The product, in the report: Fitness tracker - counts steps walked, distance, calories consumed, active minutes, and sleep
Purchased Fitbit Force directly from the company - preordered. Arrived and I started wearing it around November 10, 2013. Wore daily and through night for sleep tracking, removed for showering and to charge as needed. Noticed several (4-5) small red bumps on my left wrist morning of December 26, 2013. Bumps were itchy. Assumed maybe tracker had gotten tight on my arm overnight while sleeping, loosened the band and continued to wear the tracker. Itching intensified over that day and the next, scratched as little as possible. Over the next 3-4 days, bumps increased, then began to develop into blisters. Area of irritation was very small to start - just a few bumps. By 6 days after the first bumps appeared, irritated area now 3 inches long from wrist bone back towards elbow. Also now about 1 inch wide. Bumps have now grown and morphed into large fluid filled blisters. Incredibly itchy. Skin surrounding the blistered area is visibly reddened. Since I am a nurse, I covered my wrists with bandages at work to prevent any cross contamination. Covering the area seemed actually to make it worse, or cause the spreading and itching to increase. Oral [REDACTED] for the itching. Area cleansed in the shower, but noticed that getting it wet or warm increased the redness and itching considerably. Did use [REDACTED] pads and [REDACTED] to cover loosely at work, continued throughout to wear the tracker. I was assuming at the time that unit had gotten tight on my arm and caused a reaction at the area of the charging port and that once this reaction was fine I would be able to continue to wear the tracker with no problem. I thought it was my fault/error, not that the tracker was faulty. 1/4/2014 visited with my daughter and she commented she thought it was maybe infected, possibly cellulitis. I had my concerns about that was well (I am an RN). Decided to watch it a little longer to see if it would clear up once the blistered area popped and healing could begin. Continued to cover it at work to avoid comments by co-workers and patients as my wrist now looked angry, red and weepy. Covered the inside of the tracker with moleskin to ease skin irritation from plastic band and to cover the open battery port which I felt was the area causing the skin irritation. The moleskin helped but the reaction continued to progress, now longer than 3 weeks. Went to Urgent Care 1/13/14 and was given antibiotics for infection from having scratched the area. She also contemplated oral prednisone for the inflammation. Asked that I move tracker to right arm while left healed, which I did. 2 days later I had areas of redness and bumps on the right wrist, exactly where the battery port area was - even through the moleskin. This was concerning to me, that even with the battery area covered, the unit was causing a skin reaction. I began looking online for other reports of irritation from the Fitbit Force and found the online forum at Fitbit.com which was full of reports of hundreds of other people having the same reaction.

I wore it daily (but did not get it wet), and recharged it by plugging the dongle into my laptop and attaching it to the force. On Dec 24th I noticed I had a nasty rash on my right wrist and thought it was from a contact reaction to something. Not wanting to irritate it further, I moved the force to my left wrist and put [REDACTED] cream on my right wrist and took [REDACTED]. The rash got worse each day on the right wrist and after about two days I realized I had a rash beginning on the left wrist too. That was when I first realized the force was causing the problem. I searched online and found some forums on fitbit’s website and realized I was not the only one. It took 38 days for it to start but after that it came on with a vengeance. It took 9 days for the rash to stop getting worse. Over the new year holiday an ER doctor friend took a look at it and advised me to cover it and use a topical steroid. We weren’t at home so I used hydrocortisone cream and kept it wrapped (which also helped keep me from scratching). At it’s worst I had small bubbles/blister burns on my right wrist. It took almost 4 weeks to heal. Thinking we had a batch issue with the force (no one really had any idea early on), I asked fitbit to send a new one. When it arrived in late January, I covered the back with electrical tape (over the battery / charger port), and very nervously wore it for a few days on my left wrist. Most days it was worn over a long sleeve shirt. It took about 2 days where it actually touched skin for the rash to reappear. I removed it and sent back the 2nd unit for a refund. (The same model - FB402BKS – small black). Fitbit has issued a recall for the product but has yet to tell consumers with any certainty what is going on. I am not allergic to nickel (that was their initial communication with most users). I can and still do wear stainless steel jewelry with no issues. The only thing I’ve ever reacted to this way is the fitbit force. I’ve filed this report as I don’t think fitbit is sharing enough information with consumers about what may be causing these nasty burn reactions.

On February 23, 2014, after wearing a Fitbit Force for 25 days, a dime-sized red rash appeared on my wrist directly under the device’s charging port.. After online research, I immediately discontinued wearing the device. The rash has continued to worsen every day since removal; the main body is quarter-sized and purplish-red, and the lesser “starter” rash (lighter red, slightly bumpy) is spreading around the arm under where the band was worn. The entire mess is both burning and itching

The product, in the report: FitBit Force Activity Tracker Wristband- Tracks sleep, steps, stairs, and calories burned. FB402BKS – small black
I purchased and began wearing the FitBit Force on my right wrist on January 28th, 2014. A few days later, I switched the FitBit over to my left wrist and wore it there until February 20th. That morning I woke up with a terrible rash/burn on my left wrist, and a smaller one on my right wrist. The rash appeared right underneath where the FitBit Force has its charging port.
I stopped using the Force immediately. By Tuesday February 25th my rash/burn had grown across my wrist and become much worse. I went into urgent care, and was given a steroid cream to help clear it up. As of today, March 3, the rash/burn is just beginning to heal, but has a long way to go. It is still very painful and itchy.
I am concerned about what caused this issue, especially because it seems to be systemic. I had not worn the FitBit on my right wrist for over 2 weeks, and the rash/burn still appeared on that wrist, the same day it did on my right wrist.
I am also concerned about the compromise on the immune system this has created. If my body was fighting hard to respond to the rash/burn, could of it made me vulnerable to other infections. Three days after the rash broke out, I came down with a terrible sinus infection and eye infection. Neither of which am I prone to getting. I have since heard others reporting similar issues on FitBit’s Forum.
The FitBit company has not offered any information yet on what is the definite cause of the reaction. There is only speculation at this point.

I received a Fitbit Force for Christmas. I started wearing it day & night. Approximately 4-5 weeks after I started wearing it I noticed a rash starting on the bone area of my wrist. The rash was very itchy & about the size of a quarter. I thought that I had a bug bite or something so I switched wrists. After about a week to 10 days the rash was just as big and as red as the other wrist. I hated to stop wearing it because I loved the features. Finally in mid February I did a search to see if anyone else was having the same issues and that’s when I found that someone had reported the problem on the Fitbit Community Forum. By the time I posted my rash issues there were already around 500 people who had posted regarding varying rash/burn problems. Some were much more severe than my reaction. I stopped wearing the Fitbit Force immediately. It’s been almost 3 weeks since I stopped wearing the force and the rashes are still visible & still itchy. Fitbit has responded to my issue and has offered to exchange & refund for another style or a complete refund. I’ve received the Fitbit One and I’m waiting on the refund of the difference of $30. I have not sent the Force back as of yet.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force is a wrist-worn fitness tracker that tracks calories, steps, stairs, sleep cycles.
I wore the Fitbit tracker 24/7 from 11/17/13 until 12/19/13. I noticed a few itchy bumps under the tracker on the 19th of December. I put electrical tape on the back of the tracker and switched hands. The next morning, the few bumps was now an area 2”by 1”. It was very red, inflamed, itchy and blistering. I also noticed that the other wrist had a blister on it. I went to my dermatologist who prescribed a very strong steroid ointment and said I had a severe contact dermatitis to a component of the Fitbit Force. I booked an alergy patch test. The derm prescribed Fluocinonide ointment under occlusion on the first night to get the rash under control. That worked well and the rash stopped spreading. It dried out turned flaky and itchy an lasted for about 4-5 weeks. There is a very slight faint mark where the wound was that hopefully won’t scar. I know now that I am not allergic to nickel.
My guess is the adhesives. Whatever it is, human skin really doe not like ti.

I started wearing my new fitbit force on Feb. 1, 2014. I started to get a slight red spot about 2 1/2 weeks later but figured it was just a irritation since I have sensitive skin. It started to become itchy so I tried to adjust my band to wear it higher to avoid the irritated spot. It then seemed the spot just got larger and more irritated. I took the band off on feb. 26, 2014 as soon as I heard there was a recall on the product. The rash is very itchy and rough and isn’t getting better. It almost seems to be worse. The company says it is a reaction to nickel but I’ve never had a problem wearing earrings with nickel. Other than that I can’t get anymore info from the company as to what I should do. I don’t have health insurance so I can’t see a dr.

I received the Fitbit Force for Christmas. Love the product. After about a month of use I started getting this rash, burn on my arm. At night - I’d switch it to my other arm. That arm started getting the rash. The rash is not going away. My left arm itches and burns and my right wrist (the one I only wore for a few nights) still has a mark and it has been over a week since I wore it there. They not only need to figure out what is causing this but how to cure it. I’m afraid my wrists are going to scar!

I began wearing the Fitbit Force on January 8, 2014. On February 11, I noticed a small, red irritation on my right wrist, and thinking water got under the band, I changed wrists. The rash/burn got larger and became raised and itchy over the next couple of days. The next day I noticed 2 red bumps on my left wrist. I immediately stopped wearing the device. The rash/burn on my left wrist got larger too and raised. I tried leaving both areas open to air, then I tried hydrocortisone cream. The area did not improve, so I sought medical advice and got a prescription for triamcinolone cream BID. The areas are still not improving.

The product, in the report: Fitbit force
I received a Fitbit Force as a gift on December 21, 2014. I started wearing it on December 22, 2014. After about 2 -3 weeks I developed a rash under the charging area that started as a red rash and developed into a blistery, pussy infection. Initially, when my left wrist became slightly red with a little pimple, I moved the force to my right hand thinking I had a bug bite. After a few more days, the right wrist also started turning red and from there it became blistery and infected as well. I had to go to the doctor where I was prescribed an antibiotic cream as well as a steroid cream. At the same time, I developed 2 cold sores and my teeth became very sensitive and one of my teeth became very painful. I went to the dentist and they didn’t think it was related to the force but I did have to have a tooth extracted. I am now seeing other customers who are having symptoms other than the ones directly related to the wrist area. I wonder if there is any correlation.
Fitbit did refund my money but I am very concerned as to what is causing the rash and/or other issues.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force fitness tracker
I received a Fitbit Force for Christmas, and wore it daily from 12/25/13 to 2/7/14. After wearing the device for approximately 20 days, I developed a rash on my wrist. When I switched the device to the other wrist, I developed a rash there also. Through a Web search on 1/30/14, I learned that other Fitbit Force users were having the same problem. On 1/31/14, I sent the company the following email message: ************************************************** I received a Fitbit Force as a Christmas gift, and I love it. Unfortunately, I’ve developed a rash on my wrist from wearing it. (I’ve attached a picture.) Could you please advise me how I can continue using your product but avoid the rash. *************************************************
They sent the following response on the same day: ************************************************** We are sorry that you are experiencing skin irritation. We want to follow up with some comments and provide some options to assist you.
We are looking into reports from a very limited number of Fitbit Force users, who have been experiencing skin irritation, possibly as a result of an allergy to nickel, an element of surgical-grade stainless steel used in the device.
First, since you are experiencing skin irritation, we suggest that you discontinue using the product.
Second, we want to offer you a full refund or a choice of a different Fitbit product to replace your Force (Fitbit will handle all shipping costs and will provide a refund in any difference in price.)
You can visit http://www.fitbit.com/comparison/trackers for more information about Fitbit trackers.
Please let us know if you purchased your Force on Fitbit.com or at a retailer and whether you would like a refund or replacement for a different type of Fitibt tracker.
We are sorry that even a few consumers have experienced these problems and assure you that we are looking at ways to modify the product so that anyone can wear the Fitbit Force comfortably. We will continue to update our customers with the latest information.
We look forward to your response and finding a resolution for you. ************************************************************************
After reading a few suggestions online, I covered the charging port with electrical tape and continued wearing the device. Since the rash became increasingly uncomfortable, I discontinued wearing it completely on 2/7/14.
I am filing this report for two reasons: 1. My rash seems to be getting worse. 2. My stepdaughter (who is not genetically related to me) has developed a similar rash from using her Fitbit Force, which leads me to believe that the problem is more widespread than the email above suggests.

I plan to see a doctor this Thursday to see if there is anything I can do to help the healing process.

I purchased and began wearing a FitBit Force (activity tracker wristband) in Dec 2013. Last week I developed a blister-like burn where the metal on the band touches my skin. The burn has continued to worsen and is now a scaly, itchy patch.

I purchased and used the fitbit Force for several weeks and contracted a rash on my wrist. I had heard reports of this happening to other individuals so I discontinued use but the rash got progressively worse the next few days so I received medical attention. I contacted fitbit and they allowed me to return the product and stated that they would be looking into the cause. For me, it has been about a month since the first signs of rash, and there is only a slight discoloration still on my wrist. My concern is that they are not doing enough to warn current and new users of the harm their device can cause. I follow a string on the fitbit message board and everyday new people are coming forward reporting the same issue that is very known to fitbit, but the users know nothing about. Someone has complied a list of people who have come to the message board reporting the problem, I believe the number is currently around 600. If fitbit is not prepared to do something about seriously notifying the public about the issues, I’m hoping some outside agency can.

I received the Fitbit Force for Christmas and started wearing it on my left wrist on 12/26/13. I charged it the second time on 1/30/14. On 2/1/14, I noticed some redness on my wrist toward the outside (where the metal portion/ charging port/ altimeter are located on the back of the device) where the Force would rest against my skin. I took it off for that day and the next. I started wearing it again on 2/3/14, with the charging port facing the inside of my wrist. The rash/burn started on the inside of my wrist on 2/6/14. I covered the metal portion with electrical tape to create a physical barrier on 2/6/14. Upon researching causes/ cures, I discovered this was a much more serious, widespread problem and discontinued using the device on 2/9/14.

I purchased a Fitbit Force back on 12/03/2013 for Christmas. Since Christmas, I have been wearing it every day and like the item very much. However on 02/12/2014 (after almost two months of use) I suddenly developed a burn/sore/rash on the top of my wrist, directly below the display. I have no known allergies or previous skin sensitivity issues, and suspected it might be from the Fitbit Force. I did some research on the internet and found that a lot of people have been experiencing the same exact issue, that Fitbit has an advisory on their site, and there is even a potential lawsuit.

Fitbit Force caused severe red rash, including bumps, itchiness, sores. Been 16 days and counting. Had to go to the Dr.’s office to get a more potent steroid cream to try to alleviate the issue. [REDACTED]. This is NOT JUST A NICKEL ALLERGY EITHER, otherwise the victims would see rashes from the clasp side of the band too and not just the top, as well as actually be allergic to nickel too (less than 5% of reported cases are from people who know they are allergic to nickel).

Fitbit is worn like a watch and it tracks the time, calories burned, distance walked, stairs climbed, active minutes and sleep activity. It is worn on the wrist 24/7, except for showering. I bought it approximately one month ago and it’s been great. Yesterday, I noticed a rash on my wrist under the Fitbit. After going online, it looks like this is a reoccurring problem for many people with the Fitbit. I emailed the company and they apologized and are providing me with a full refund. Their website says they are investigating the cause, but it is still unknown. It’s scary to not know what caused this skin rash on my wrist. Many report the rash gets worse before getting better. I think it would be wise to pull the product off the market until they figure out how to fix the problem. A great product with a scary result!

The product, in the report: Activity tracker-tracks steps, activity, sleep, etc.
Received a FitBit activity tracker for Christmas. Set it up via [REDACTED] app. Wore it for 3-4 weeks. It synched frequently with my [REDACTED] as I had both devices on me all day long and the tracker 24/7. When I went to work a coworker took one look at it and advised me to google it as she had read an article about the problem. I did and was amazed that many others had same thing - pictures of their burns looked like mine, some even bigger.
Problem began one day when I shoveled snow and my gloves got damp. As soon as I got back in house I took the gloves off. Later that evening I noticed my wrist was red and itchy and hurt. Since it was right under where the tracker was I took tracker off immediately. Made sure tracker was dry but put a small [bandage] over the open charging port and put it back on. At bedtime it appeared worse so too tracker off. Upon rising next day, put new [bandage] on the tracker and put it on my other wrist. That wrist started getting rash/burn so took it off immediately and have not worn since.
Looked like a very bad sunburn, appeared to go down several layers of skin. Put [REDACTED] and [bandage] on burn but it appeared to get worse so next day took [bandage] off washed both wrists well and started spraying alcohol on it so the burn would cool down. Several small blisters had appeared right below where open charging port is but alcohol appeared to have stopped progression of burn. Continued with washes and alcohol for several day and when they no longer appeared “raw” began to apply a lotion with aloe in it.
Both wrists are healed up (I guess) but the area that was “burned” is greatly discolored/noticeable. I am hoping with time it will go away completely but this process has taken numerous weeks to heal. I contacted Fitbit who sent refund right away. Have not returned tracker as I read others were advised not to by your agency.

Purchased Fitbit Force for myself for Christmas. Happily wore for over four weeks. Then, a red spot appeared which only became bigger and crustier over a few days. The red spot is located right under where the charging device is. Didn’t know about the breakout and thought the band was too tight so tried another arm. The redness appeared within a day or two on another arm. Took off Force and googled for similar complaints. Found a few threads describing similar symptoms. It has been over two weeks since I took off Force but the red spots turned into rashes and look awful. For how long are you going to keep us in a dark?! The manufacturer threw a guess that it is an allergic reaction to nickel. I have never exhibited any allergic reactions to nickel in my 36 years. As a matter of a fact, I have never experienced such severe allergic like the one I got from Fitbit Force. Topical cream, [REDACTED], is not helping. Incredibly, upset with Fitbit that they exposed its customer to a nasty product, not disclosing the exact cause of the reaction. Who knows what it is doing to inside our bodies?!

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force. Here is a link: http://www.fitbit.com/force The Fitbit Force is a wireless wristband that tracks steps, stairs, calories burned, etc. and promotes exercise. Brand: Fitbit Model: Force Serial Number: FB402BKS
I received a Fitbit Force for Christmas. I have worn the product on my wrist day and night since then as recommended by Fitbit. After about one and a half months of wearing it, I noticed a red, bumpy, itchy rash where the metal part of the wristband has contact with my skin. I immediately began researching this issue to see if anyone else was experiencing this problem. I found several news stories and reports from hundreds of Fitbit Force users who are suffering the same problem. Fitbit posted a statement on their website saying that it is a nickel allergy and they are offering refunds and exchanges for other Fitbit products. I’m not sure this is a nickel allergy, though. I have never been allergic to anything my entire life, especially not nickel. This product needs to be pulled until someone gets to the bottom of this. There is no warning on or in the packaging for Fitbit Force warning against this problem that is affecting so many people.
Here is a link to one of the forums where affected Fitbit Force users are posting their issues: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Force/Fitbit-burned-arm/td-p/3661/highlight/false
Please help affected Fitbit users figure out what is going on and make Fitbit pull this product off the shelf.

The product, in the report: Black Fitbit Force. Health monitor with plastic wrist band and an open charging port on the back with exposed electronic components.
I purchased the Fitbit Force the first week of January. I wore it for a month, and on Feb 5, I noticed a small rash (red area with a little bump) appear under the charging port. I continued to wear the device (because the company had not bothered sending a proactive email to users to let them know this had been happening for a month) for several more days. On Feb 9, it became to uncomfortable to wear so I finally removed it. The itching became unbearable, and the blistering started oozing, and on Feb 11 I started applying [REDACTED] ointment and covering it with a [bandage]. The blistered area continued to grow, and finally burst and shredded, leaving me with a gaping, oozing, and red wound surrounded by extremely itchy area. I went to the doctor, who told me to stop using the [REDACTED] (which I might have known if Fitbit had send a notification) and left it open to dry out. As of today, 2/16, the size of the affected area has grown to the size of a half dollar, there are still blisters that ooze, and it still itches like crazy, but it is drying outand
I have submitted a case to Fitbit (2/13) and received a notification that someone would be in touch with me in 48 hours. That was 3 days ago.

Fitbit was responsive, as was Best Buy, so I got my FORCE returned and got a One, with no further problems, but while Fitbit is responding quickly to inquiries, and is quick to return or refund, it seems illogical to me that all of these techies, with everything they know about everything, can’t figure out what’s going on. They are still saying “a small percentage of users,” but it looks like a large number of people are affected.

The product, in the report: Gray band with exposed charging post on inside of band.
A week ago I noticed some itchy bumps on my wrist. I put a bandage on them because I have sensitive skin and will itch something until I bleed and these bumps were being irritated by my Fitbit Force. After I took the [bandage] off (I have an allergy to some adhesives and didn’t want to leave it on too long) it was worse. So I start putting my Fitbit up higher, above my wrist bone, but the rash was getting worse. That was uncomfortable so I just started wearing the Fitbit loosely. Still got worse. And it was so itchy. Stopped wearing the Fitbit during the day Thursday and just put it on to track my sleep. Told my boyfriend (who bought me the Force) about it over Valentine’s dinner and he told me about an article he had read. Came home and read some articles and looked at some pictures and sure enough...It was my Force all along.
I received my Force on Christmas day and wore it continously until this past Thursday.

About Feb 4th, 2014, I started getting a rash caused by the FitBit Force. I didn’t think anything of it until I saw the notice on the FitBit dashboard. I wore it on my other wrist for one day. I immediately started getting a rash bump on my other wrist so I took it off and went about getting it returned. It didn’t matter, the rash kept spreading and getting worse. Some days it would seem better then the other day it was purple like a bruise and now it’s really starting to peel like a burn. I had the FitBit Flex previously never with any problems. I’m making a doctor appointment this week just in case it keeps getting worse. It itches like crazy sometimes. There are now over 500 reported consumers with this problem and that’s just the vocal minority. I read on an article one user said theirs got so bad it was a hole on their wrist.

On November 13th, 2013, my Fitbit Force arrived in the mail and I began wearing immediately (24-hours a day). On Friday February 7th I woke up with a burning on my left wrist (where I wore my Fitbit Force) and so I went to Urgent Care, where (after 5-hours) the doctor told me to ‘avoid wearing the Fitbit device’. The Fitbit web page has a forums section, and there are now HUNDREDS of people who have had the same problem. The Fitbit management team seem to be completely indifferent to the suffering that they are causing their customers and nonetheless are still marketing their product and injuring still more customer.
THIS PRODUCT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND THE FITBIT MANAGEMENT NEED TO BE CALLED TO ORDER, INSTEAD OF JUST MAKING MONEY ON OTHER PEOPLE’S SUFFERING.

Received a Fitbit Force on December 1st. Have been wearing it for approximately 23-3/4 hours a day since. I only take it off to shower. Last night (February 10th), I rubbed my wrist and noticed a cluster of small, shiny blisters where the stainless steel case rests on my wrist. I have since discontinued use.

Hello- I received the Fitbit Force as a Christmas give, but didn’t receive it and start wearing it until the last week of January. After a week of wearing it, I noticed a small red rash on my wrist. I have since stopped wearing it, but went to my doctor today who gave me a topical steroid to help it go away. I loved the Fitbit features, but obviously cannot continue to wear it due to the rash. I am reporting this also on the Fitbit webpage.

The product, in the report: Fit bit Force (charcoal black color)
I began wearing the Fitbit Force on my left wrist right after receiving it for Christmas, actually I did not put it on right away, but while I was wearing it I had it on as directed and developed a severe itchy rash. At first I thought I had a bug bite and then I noticed that the redness and itching were getting worse. I honestly did not figure out that the Fitbit Force was causing the reaction although I had a suspicion. I had my doctor prescribe medication, cortisone cream, but since I had quit wearing the device it was not the bumpy itching oozing rash that I once had it is a burn, a red scar that remains on my left wrist.
I then began wearing the device on my right arm and after 2 weeks the rash began on my right wrist. It is from the Fit bit and it comes from the underneath where the screws and battery are.
I googled searched to see if anyone had complained of a similar reaction and viola ---the same description and the same pictures of the irritation are shown online. I read that NBC and many consumer news reports have been filed. The company needs to own up to this and someone should investigate. I have never been allergic to any jewelry or any watches that I have worn ever. I am 54 years old.
They say that it may be nickel allergy-- well whatever it is It is [REDACTED] and I am scarred now.
For two months my left wrist has been with a red burn and now I have the beginning of this rash on my right arm. I want to return the product but something needs to be done.
Great device by the way. Love what it is capable of doing, but something is wrong with the materials.
Please, Please help and advise.

After about one month of wearing the device on my left wrist I developed a severe rash. I suspected that something had gotten on the wristband so I cleaned it and put it on my right wrist. Within an hour my right wrist looked as bad as my left one. I have no allergies to any plastics or metals that I know of. I have worn wristwatches made of similar elastomeric materials before and SINCE this incident without problems. The rashes were very painful and lasted over a month even with daily steroid cream.

The product, in the report: FitBit Force size small color black
I bought a FitBit Force on 1/21/14. I began wearing it on 1/24/14. On 1/29/14, I tried to charge the product and was unable to. I contacted the company and stopped wearing the device while waiting on a response. On 2/4/14, I noticed a red, raised, blistered rash/burn. I had heard about the FitBit Force causing a rash, so I looked it up online to see what it looked like. Mine looked exactly like this rash. I went to the doctor today. The doctor believes this is some sort of burn and prescribed burn cream and steroids.
I was told by FitBit that the rash is caused by a nickle allergy, but I do not have an allergy to nickle. They also said that the nickle was on the clasps of the band. My rash/burn is on the top part of my wrist where the connector is to plug in the device.
My concern is that there seem to be so many people with this problem and the company is still selling this device and offering replacements. I am hoping it is just an allergy of some sort and will go away without any long term effects to my health.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force is a step/calorie/sleep tracker to be worn around the clock that is causing horrible rashes, mine blistering and oozing, but the Force is still on store shelves despite the injuries occurring among so many users!
I see that MANY people are getting horrible rashes from this product... it is not just me. My particular rash/burn is angry, deep red, itchy, BLISTERING and oozing! I took it off when showering and always cleaned the back of the Force before putting it back on, so it wasn’t a dirt, germ or bacterial issue. I stopped wearing the force on my left arm a week ago, not knowing what exactly was causing what WAS at the time, a mild skin irritation. I switched to using it on the right arm while my left arm healed, and I put tape under the little metal segment in case it was caused by the metal. (This was done despite never having a reaction to any metals on my wrists before with watches or bracelets and so on... just to play it safe. But please note that I do *not* have sensitive skin.) The rash got worse and worse and worse every day **after** I stopped wearing this horrible defective device on my left arm! It still is not getting better!! Yesterday, I noticed I was getting a rash on the other arm despite never making direct contact with the metal... but, again, this second rash is exactly where the Force was resting on this other wrist, too. The fitbit IS the cause of it... there is no doubt in my mind. My left arm is the worst (so far) and because of the fluid filled blisters all over my wrist that are seeping fluid, (GROSS!) I know I will have scabs where the blisters are and am terrified that I will have a LARGE scar on my wrist(s)!
Fitbit seems to care so little about customers that, while they are aware of these injuries to MANY of the Force users and are offering only refunds, they are NOT pulling this product from shelves to protect new users! THEY ARE STILL SELLING THIS KNOWING IT PHYSICALLY INJURES CUSTOMERS, without even knowing exactly why people are getting rashes or burns! In my opinion, this product is DANGEROUS and should be pulled! People should know that this product could cause serious skin injuries and maybe even potential long term damage. Is this a toxic chemical burn??? Who knows? Is this material now *in* my skin? I can’t say for sure... but I can say the FORCE caused an unbearable rash which might have the potential to leave a scar.

The product, in the report: Fitbit Force - black band
I received a Fitbit Force as a Christmas present and have been wearing it daily (~20 hrs per day) on my left wrist since December 25, 2013.
Over the past two weeks (since end of January, 2014), I have begun experiencing a large red rash / skin irritation that is itchy, blistery and peeling on my left wrist. This corresponds with the skin under my Fitbit Force. It has become progressively worse such that I have discontinued use of the device since February 1, 2014. It is now February 7, 2014 and it has continued to get worse. The blisters are now oozing and weeping, and the red irritations have become even larger and more pronounced.
The Fitbit Force manufacturers have issued a warning to consumers that suggests this may be a nickel allergy. However, I am not allergic to nickel.
I am concerned about the healing process of my wrist and the potential for permanent scars. It is causing extreme discomfort and currently interrupting my work, along with causing emotional distress about its appearance.

The product, in the report: Fitness tracker/armband
I purchased a Fitbit Force sports/fitness armband. I, along with many different users on the community page for this product, have experienced unexplained rashs/burning on the wrists that are eerily similar.
The company has not declared a recall and continues to sell the product while offering a refund or exchange for a lesser product for consumers affected. The fact that all the rashes appear to be very similar in nature (many photos uploaded) seems to suggest a product default instead of an allergic reaction that the company is claiming.
Please consider this as a request to ask the company to recall this product until the source of the rash/burn/leak can be identified. Many users are complaining of hospital visits. I have had the rash for 4 weeks now with no sign of abating and will likely visit a physician for a steroid treatment this week.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
