The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 12, 2011, sent to the company May 11, 2012, published by CPSC May 25, 2012

The product, in the report: Gas slide in range

The consumer s’ mother in law accidently bumped into the range on one occasion and within a matter of minutes the fire alarm went off. The consumer went into the kitchen noticed that the oven was powered in the broil position.

The consumer powered the oven in the off position and was able to carefully notice that the knob went just a little past the off position and he noticed how it would get easily positioned on the broil position.

On or around August 22,2011 a service technician came out to the home to do what is known as a “safety check”. The technician advised the consumer that the range needed a thermostat to prevent the failure from occurring.

The consumer indicated that he would order the part and that he would make the repairs himself because the firm wanted to charge him for the parts & labor.

The range is located in the consumer’s in laws home and he isn’t aware if it is being used or if it is in the unplug position from the wall outlet. He indicated that prior to the technician coming out to the home the range was unplugged from the wall out.

UPDATE: Dear Sirs, The incident report as stated herein does not adequately exemplify either the extreme dangerousness of the problem, nor the fact that it was caused by a faulty design, and cheaply manufactured plastic part which the company, sent someone out to confirm that this part was the problem, but than refused to fix this dangerous design problem. I own multiple rental properties with approximately 21 natura1 gas appliances and I have never had any failure that caused such a dangerous situation, and this from an appliance that is only a couple ofyears old, newer than all of mine. A tiny piece of plastic that performed as a stop and allowed the oven temp broiler nod to turn only one direction, broke off thus making it actually tricky to turn the stove off, and making it easy to inadvertently pop it on to broil without even knowing that it was turned on. This happened on multiple occasions. I strongly urge the consumer product safety commission to recall this product and all other models made with the same design, IT IS NOT SAFE!

The product, in the report: Stainless steel gas range-whirlpool with accubake

My gas range---Whirlpool Model number WFG374LVS has “Power Burners” on the front of the cooktop. If I gently lean against the control, for example while I am cooking something on a back burner, then the front Power Burner control, which is on the front at waist height, will immediately ignite and flames come up. I have been almost burned several times. I am frightened to cook on it and frightened my 6 year old will inadvertantly brush against the burner control knob, it will turn on, and her hair or clothing will catch fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gas Range

Control knobs on gas range soften or weaken during heavy use of burners and oven. This reaches a point where the flow of gas cannot be controlled leading to boil overs and extremely hot oil. On occasion it was necessary to run for pliers in order to shut off the gas flow. This happens any time the stove is heavily used and would be a serious danger to children/young adults who might use the range. My belief is that they are using a plastic with too low a temperature resistence. Whirlpool Model WFG381LVB Ser No RY5011690

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Single Door Gas Range

The consumer stated that her gas range seems to have a surge of power on her gas range. The consumer was baking bread and muffins in May of 2011 when she thought something might be wrong with her range. The consumer had her product on already for about 90 minutes set to bake, when she placed a second batch of food it burned within minutes and her smoke detectors went off. The consumer shut off the oven and the smoke burned itself out. On another occasion today, the consumer’s daughter had the range on for about an hour when she put a batch of cookies in the oven. The cookies burnt in minutes and her daughter turned off the oven. The consumer in another incident, tried to use the auto clean feature and it blew the thermostat of her range on August 10th and the oven door locked.

The circuit burned itself out and the product shut itself off. The consumer’s husband was by the stove and saw the digital interface shut off. The consumer stated that no one was harmed in any instance with the product. The consumer stated that her product is an oven range combo. The consumer is only experiencing an issue with the oven of the product. The consumer stated that the product surges after an hour of use. The oven was set to bake at 325 and 350 degrees respectively when this issue occurs. The consumer called the firm today and was told that the product was not on recall and they can send a serviceman at her expense . The consumer has called the retailer and was given the number to the manufacturer.

The range shows no apparent signs of charring or discoloration. The product has not caused to the structure of the consumer’s home. The consumer opted not to call the fire department at the time of the respective incidents. The consumer was not harmed by the product. The range has a coil surface.

Consumer update: replaced 2 grates due to paint cracking, replaced thermostat, and has another appointment for someone to look at the oven again.

The product, in the report: White Gas Range 30” wide

I currently have a Whirlpool gas range in my kitchen and the oven door gets extremely hot; to the point that it will burn someone if touched. I have not had an incident yet, but I am concerned for the safety of my 10 month daughter and that is why she is not allowed in the kitchen when the oven in on. I know that if she were to touch the oven during normal baking she would have severe burns.

The product, in the report: Gas Range

Shortly after the consumer’s wife used the oven to bake a batch of cookies on the setting of 335 degrees she left the home under the assumption the oven was powered in the off position.

She returned within an hour to notice that the home was filled with a gasoline smell. She noticed that the oven was still powered in the on position she powered the oven in the off position and opened all the windows in the home.

On 7/13/2011 Consumers Gas Company was contacted and a representative came out on the same date. The oven was red tagged indicating not to use it due to a major gas leak .The firm was contacted as well on 7/13/2011 and he was scheduled to have a technician come out to the home on 7/18/2011.

On 7/18/2011 when the technician from the firm came out to the home he indicated that the igniter was not coming into the full temperature with three amps it would crack the gas valve which was causing the gas to leak.

The consumer feels as if he replaces the igniter the failure could occur again so he will not allow any repairs to be made to the unit and instead will consider replacing the unit.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool brand Gas range

When powering the oven in the on position using the setting on bake on some occasions it does not power on and when it does power in the on position gas leaks from it. The oven is set to come on when in the bake setting at 350 and it should count down ten minutes prior to heating up. She then noticed a F2 code on the display panel and the range began to beep

A repair man came out from the retailer by the name of [REDACTED] the week of 5/9/2011 where she had some wiring redone some parts replaced in the back of the range he tested the temperature of the oven and it was heated to 800 degrees. The repairs that were made did not repair the hazard with it. She decided not to use the range until the final repairs were made

She contacted the retailer again and was advised there part that was required to repair the failure was currently on back order and the retailer was not advised as in to when the part would come in and that they were aware of other ranges with similar model numbers that experienced the same failure.

She contacted the firm the same week of 5/9/2011 and was advised to contact the retailer. No further information provided.

Consumer believes this stove is unsafe. It should be recalled. Whirlpool actually does not have replacement part. Stove overheats to up to 800 degrees, shuts off and releases gas. It’s very dangerous.

TO: CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISS. RE: questionable safety factor/porcelin coated 4 grates on burner tops Whirlpool gas range model: FG36ILVB2

I believe the 4 metal grates on top of the Whirlpool gas range I bought 2/17/11 are a safety hazard. Pans slide off. There is no gritty texture coating to keep pans from sliding off in any direction. A hot plate of food could potentially slide off and fall off on people or pets.

I used to have an old Caloric range, with layered grates, not one straight line & never had this problem.

Especially when food has to be turned in the pan, the pan tends to start sliding.

I ask that these black, slick grates be recalled & replaced free with ones that have a gritty coating to keep pans in place so they don’t slide, or a different uneven design that is not slippery.
