The product, in the report: Whirlpool gas range, stainless steel

Ongoing issue with a Whirlpool gas range model #WFG371LVS, S/N R13423335

The burner Controls are placed on the front of the range and can be slightly turned on by brushing up against them. This opens the gas valve but does not light the burner. The result is gas leaking into the room until finally detected by someone who wonders what the odor is. We complained to Whirlpool about this unsafe condition and were told to buy a parts kit from them or go to [REDACTED] for a child proof fix.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 6.0 Cu. Ft. Gas Double Oven Range with Center Oval Burner

We purchased a new Whirlpool Double Oven Range two weeks ago. Within the first few days we found numerous occasions where the knob on the stove was partially turned to the left letting gas escape into the Kitchen. One one evening the smell was very strong when we walked into the kitchen. After several moments we realized that it was coming from the stove. We had to turn on the ceiling fan to help dissipate the fumes. We know that, on some occasions, one of us apparently brushed up against the knob causing it to turn on. We do not know what happened the evening the entire kitchen filled with fumes. This is obviously a defect in the product as we have had a stove in this same position for the past 35 years without a single incident.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Natural gas range /oven

On Dec. 25, 2016 we detected a strong odor of gas in our home. I contacted the Fire Department and a crew was dispatched to the house, which we had already evacuated. The crew detected a concentration of gas in the living quarters which would have sustained an ignition / explosion. The source of the gas was a burner on a newly purchased gas range / oven, which had moved from the off position to a point which allowed gas to pass to the burner, but had not allowed the ignitor to spark.

Once in the past, my wife had leaned over the gas range to reach something and the burner turned on and did ignite. This situation was better than having the gas flow to the burner without being ignited. I feel hat the design of the burner controls (dials) or the gas valves (do not turn off securely) are defective and will eventually result in fires, explosions, injuries or deaths.

The manufacturer (Whirlpool) was contacted and stated that they would report this incident to you, but I advised them that I would also make a first person report. Whirlpool’s safety department indicated that a service technician would check out the unit on Thursday, Dec. 29 between 0800-1600.

I feel that this matter requires immediate attention.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gas Range. Your basic everyday Stove/Oven combination. 30” wide standard.

We were cooking a 22 pound Thanksgiving Day Turkey. I opened the oven door to check on the turkey. Upon moving the turkey the oven grille the turkey was on fell approx 6 inch’s on the right side of the oven. Only the right side. Hot juices/grease spilled out into the oven causing an oven fire. Hot grease also shot out hitting my face and arm. Fortunately the oven went out by itself in 4 or 5 seconds, just before we were going to hit it with the fire extinguisher. I immediately put cold water on my face and arm. We had a dozen people in our home and everyone was quite shocked/stunned. After shutting the oven off and proceeding to clean the grease out of the oven which included removing the bottom cover where the oven burner is located. We were able to continue cooking our dinner. This involved relocating the oven grille which the turkey would now sit on to the far bottom shelve. We now had recognized that the far top and far bottom oven widths were quite different than the middle rack measurements. Upon experimentation we found when the oven rack is located on any of the middle shelves, it would fall down when applying pressure from the top of the rack. The oven walls apparently have bowed outwards during the course of time, thus making use of the oven potentially hazardous. This situation could have been much worse. As it turned out my burns were minimal and the fire extinguished itself. Now what am I suppose to do about using my oven when wanting to cook?? Upon “Googleling” this on the internet It was apparent other people have had the same issue.

Grates on cooktop slipped when turning pans or sliding pans. Tipped forward with full hot pressure canner on it. Caught pressure canner but is very dangerous. Could result in serious burns if contents spilled. Contacted Whirlpool who immediately issued a $500 buyback check. Paperwork stated “Legal/safety” issue.

When shopping for new cooktop noted that Home Depot had a different model Whirlpool cooktop with the same defect. There is no way to secure or anchor grates.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool slide in 5 burner gas range.

I purchased Whirlpool gas range, Model WFG540HES0 Serial R54339104, a 5 burner slide in range last Dec. I began noticing gas odor occasionally. I called Whirlpool today,10-24-16. to report that the 2 center knobs could be opened to allow gas to escape without pushing the knob in which is normally the function for turning the stove on. These 2 knobs could be move by a brush against the stove, a light touch, which allowed gas to escape. Which to me is a safety issue as this could be done as one passed and did not notice the gas. Why would only 2 of the knobs not work properly? I called Whirlpool and the response was that there was no recall and that the issue I outlined was normal. I do not think that is correct; I see this as a safety issue.

I recently purchased a whirlpool stove model number WFG540HoESO, serial # R62267220. My son was reaching over to stove to the microwave when he leaned against the stove and the stove turned on. The controls are way to sensitive and could have caused a serious accident. This happened to me as I was reaching to the microwave as well. Either the issue needs to be fixed or the stove recalled since this is a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: gas stove - Whirlpool 456 Accubake Oven System

July 13, 2016 Dear President [REDACTED], I am writing to you in hopes that you can help me solve a problem. I had purchased a Whirlpool 456 Accubake Oven System from ABT electronics over 6 years ago. I have my daughter and her 3 year old son living with me. It is an extremely dangerous oven that will shut off and spew gas. The first time my husband experienced it, he was shocked. It is a deceiving situation because it won’t do it for months and out of the blue, it happens. My husband [REDACTED] is in IT and is convinced it is a defect. I have had various licensed appliance workers out and they have replaced parts - still happens. Also I had a gas man here and checked the hook up and it is fine - but he said he has the same stove and oven and it does that to him. I spoke to ABT - they referred me to Whirlpool. Their attorney told me that all they could do is send another repairman out and I would have to pay for parts. They would not replace. I do not understand that? If I actually thought that would work but it is in the defect. I had ABT’s repairman out at one time also, already. 2RMI2R Parts. I had been sick so I did not have the energy to pursue this any further then but am feeling better enough to write to you in hopes you can help this situation resolve. I want my family safe ( I worked in a burn unit at one time) and I know this is not a safe responsible remedy. I know I need a new oven. I had reported this to Consumer affairs back in the day so there is a record. I know I need a new oven to replace the one that has been dangerous since day one. I want Whirlpool to replace the oven (different style, or $ back). Thank you for your time and thank you for being President of the [REDACTED].

    Respectfully, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Kitchen Gas Range/Oven

During our home remodel a few years back we purchased all new Whirlpool appliances from our local Lowe’s store. One of the appliances purchased was a gas oven/range.

One day about six months after installing the range, I accidentally bumped into one of the knobs with my leg while reaching across the cabinet next to the range to pick up a plate to take it to the dining room. After about 15 minutes, we started to smell natural gas in the dining room. I jumped up and ran into the kitchen to find one of the burner knobs on the range turned very slightly, at first glance the position of the knob didn’t appear to be turned on. I leaned down and could hear gas coming out of the burner associated with the knob that was slightly turned. Normally you would think that if the knob was turned far enough for gas to be disbursed from the burner that the ignitor would have started clicking before. I turned the burner off.

After an hour or so I got to thinking about how dangerous that could have been if I’d bumped the knob when leaving the house and not even known it. We have pets in the house and other gas appliances with electronic ignitor (i.e. water heater that is in a vented closet in the kitchen and an HVAC unit in the hall leading to the kitchen. What if I had left for work and the gas had been leaking into the room for hours when the hot water heater or HVAC ignited and could have blown the house up.

I went back into the kitchen to replicate how the issue could have occurred. So I turn one of the burners slowly and sure enough, you can turn it a reasonable amount with gas being disbursed before you turn far enough for the ignitor to start clicking. And on other ranges, it seems you have to press fairly firmly in order to move the burner knob from the off position into a position for it to light. That doesn’t appear to be the case with this range. It takes very little effort to turn the burner before lighting. That must have been why it lighted so easy when I lightly brushed my leg against it leaning over to pick up the plate.

I jumped online and discovered that there were pages and pages of complaints in product reviews about the same issue for this Whirlpool gas range model.

Since the initial incident, this has happened many times since we installed the range. We’re all in the habit now of walking back to the kitchen a few times every time we leave to check and double check the burners to make sure someone didn’t accidentally bump into one of the knobs. And when we go out of town and have visitors come in to feed our pets, before we leave, we turn the gas off to the range and pull the power plug, to prevent something from happening while we’re gone.

Another concern is the ignitor on the over itself started malfunctioning. About 8 out of 10 times the oven is used, when you turn the oven on via the electronic control you hear the oven ignitor start to click over and over as the gas valve in the oven turns on. If the oven doesn’t ignite after about 5 seconds, the gas valve automatically shuts off and the ignitor stops clicking. After about a minute the cycle starts all over. Most of the time the oven does actually light right at the end of the 5 seconds of the ignitor clicking, but because the sensor that detects the oven burner on doesn’t have time to heat up, it abruptly shuts down. So after this happens half a dozen times, when the oven does finally light there is so much gas built up in the oven that you hear a loud swoosh and low boom sound as the gas within the oven lights. This is also scary.

We’re so scared of it that anytime we use it we have to take turns staying in the room to watch it to make sure it lights every time. We’re about ready to buy a different range that we’re not scared of, but wanted to pass along our experience with this unit so hopefully something can be done before someone is severely injured or killed by one of these gas ranges.

The label on the unit reads: Whirlpool Corporation Benton Harbor MI, 49022

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 30” gas cooktop Model WCG51USODB SERIAL NO. D62309778

I purchased a 30” gas cooktop. The model is: Whirlpool 30” Gas C- Top (WCGS51USODB) Serial No. is (D62309778. The grates on flames are two peice. The mounting design is defective. When a heavy pot or pan is placed on it, if moved a bit, the grate slips off the mounting dimples creating a very dangerous situation. A few days after the install, my wife started complaining about this and one day, the grate slipped and burnt her arm. Luckily she pulled back real quick , but suffered a burn anyways. I later noticed that the grates just slip off with a slight pressure and are very unsteady. Called Whirlpool, the tech agreed it was not right and stated he could not do anything about. Whirlpool offered to take the cooktop back and reimburse me, but refused to pay for the re install of anything else I would buy. They treated us very rudely with no empathy.

Regardless, this appliance is very unsafe and dangerous. A pot of boiling water can tilt and fall on anyone in the vicinity and cause major burns.

The product, in the report: WHIRLPOOL RANGE/OVEN MOD # WFG54OHOESO

We have a WHIRLPOOL model WFG540H0ESO range/oven. The gas controls are on the front of the unit and are way too sensitive to being accidently turned on. If you are reaching above the stove or even next to it and you gently brush the gas knobs they turn on and flame up. This has happened many times and if you are wearing an article of clothing that is flammable this can set it on fire. I have been a firefighter for a lot of years and I feel this is a real hazard. The manufacturer needs to make the knob controls with a deeper travel to allow them to ignite. The present distance to get the knobs to turn is way too little.

Using maytag gas cook top model# mgc7536ws00 to cook lunch and one of the burner valves that wasn’t being used started to smoke, spark and flames were shooting upward from under the valve knob. The electrical circuit for the lite function was shorting to the aluminum valve body for burner valve. The short was severe enough it started to melt the aluminum on the gas burner valve. I was able to unplug the unit prior to gas being potentially exposed to the electrical short preventing a fire or gas explosion. The electrical harness for all 5 lite switches and that one burner valve require replacement.

Our home oven/range, about five years old, Whirlpool model GFG471LVS3 with serial number R20511768 is the probable cause of our [REDACTED] Carbon Dioxide alarm waking us at 04:45 on 13June2016. The oven and range had been used the evening before and all burners and the oven were in the off position when dinner was removed from the unit. The beeping of the alarm woke us at the above noted time, and my wife said that the range top, including the knobs in the front, were hot to the touch. The kitchen was extremely warm and the oven and all burners were in the OFF position. Upon opening the oven door, she felt as large rush of hot heat as the door was opened. Our local fire department was called and the engine crew investigated, finding increased CO levels, and decreased oxygen levels. House was aired with opening windows and levels rechecked some time after being aired, and levels were within normal limits, Oven and burners were turned on again, and although the oven was set to 350 degrees F, it went up to 400 when it was shut off, following the study of CO and Oxygen levels. At that time CO was once more elevated, and Oxygen lower. Local gas company was asked to investigate. The man that visited from WPS agreed with the firemen that there was some type of glitch in a gas valve in the oven. We were advised not to use it, and to either repair or replace the range/oven unit. We have ordered a new stove and will not get another Whirlpool.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool natural gas range (stove/oven) Model WFG5155S0ET0

LWFD fire company responded for the report of an activated CO alarm with no illness. Upon our arrival, occupants were standing outside the wood frame, raised ranch, single family home. Investigation revealed an activated CO detector on the hallway ceiling outside the sleeping quarters, but 0ppm readings on the 4-gas meter throughout the home, including the lower level where the natural gas-fire water heater and furnace are located. Interview of the owners revealed that the oven had been turned on at the time of the CO detector activation, but they had turned it off. They purchased the natural gas-fired Whirlpool range (stove/oven) in March, 2016 from the Menards in Bolingbrook, IL. The appliance was delivered by Menards but installed by a handyman they use regularly. A few days after installation the occupants were smelling gas when using the oven. They called NICOR Gas Company, who sent out a technician and told the them that he didn’t find any gas but he did find abnormal levels of CO. The owners called Whirlpool, who sent out a technician that told them the reason for the CO was because the owner had placed a sheet of tin foil on the bottom interior of the oven to protect it from food drippings. The owners removed the tin foil and continued to use the range. Further investigation by LWFD revealed no tin foil on the bottom of the oven and that the oven was properly installed with an apparently new yellow stainless steel flexible gas appliance connector. The tip-over safety device had even been properly attached to the wall behind the range. LWFD turned on the oven and almost immediately began getting CO readings on the 4-gas meter. These readings reached as high as 120 ppm, then dropped and remained between 35 ppm-45 ppm for some time before dropping. It was noticed the oven had reached its set temperature. LWFD raised the temperature setting, the oven “fired”, and the CO readings immediately began to rise again. LWFD turned the oven off, turned the gas off to the appliance, removed the appliances electric power cord from the wall outlet, and notified the owners to not use the range and contact Whirlpool.

The oven is continousally sooty. I believe it is the insulation of the stove breaking down. I had a tech out three times with no effect. I also talked with Wirlpool customer complaint and wrote a letter to Wirlpool board of directors with no reponse. I believe the stove is a FIRE HAZARD!!! and would like it to be investigated. The consumer indicates that the oven turns on by itself but it does not ignite, releasing gas in his home.

The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to arranged for a Service Technician to inspect the oven. After inspection, the Service Technician said he would order an igniter and its circuit board.

12/24/2015 - The Service Technician installed the parts to the range that were ordered.

The consumer indicates the unit worked properly until 02/28/2016. On 02/28/2016, the consumer turned it on and the oven would not ignite; he had to manually ignite the oven with a lighter.

The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation. A Service Technician will inspect his unit on 03/05/2016.

The consumer indicates that he uses his oven approximately four to five times per week.

On 12/27/2016 my Whirlpool Gold Series range, which was less than a year old, exploded, like a bomb, while I was making breakfast for my family. I had been using a burner and had it turned down low and I started the broiler so I could put the pan in to brown the frittata. I started the broiler and then went to the pantry to get the bagels and as I was putting the bagels in the toaster, my range exploded. It blew over a foot away from the wall, the oven door flew open, knobs blew off, it blew the trim off of my cabinets. Whirlpool decided to replace the range, sight unseen with a new range, same make and model. When turning the broiler on in the new range, one of two things happen, neither being the expected broiling feature. 1.) The broiler will ignite and then the flame goes out after approximately 40 seconds. There is no indication that it shut off. The display still reads as if the broiler is on. 2.) The broiler will ignite and anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes later, a fiery red flame starts shooting out of the broiler orifice in the back of the oven. Whirlpool has been less than responsive throughout this whole process. I had to post on social media (Facebook) in order to get someone to return my phone call about this. I believe there is a potential safety issue for other consumers. here is a link to a video that shows what the new range does: [REDACTED]

Often, multiple times a day, someone leans against the front of the appliance and the knobs turn on. When this happens the unit does not ignite. It simply puts off gas. The situation is not noticeable until someone smells gas. I believe this is extremely dangerous. I am extremely worried about families who have small children and this appliance. Please advise me of any action I can take to eliminate this severe safety hazard. I would like to know if this situation is being reviewed by the consumer product safety commission.

On December 6,2015 the Maytag cooktop I purchased in the fall of 2005 spontaneously caught fire. Luckily, myself and my family were home when ignition “clicking” noises started coming from our empty kitchen, as I went to investigate Iheard a loud “pop” and witnessed flames shooting out from under the left burner control knobs of our cooktop. The cooktop had not recently been used and all of the control knobs were in the appropriate “off’ position. Fortunately, I was able to extinguish the flames before further damage beyond the cooktop itself was caused to my home. It is quite obvious that had my family not been home, this incident would have resulted in the destruction of my house. Upon reviewing the CPSC’s website I was able to find that this issue is not all that uncommon for Maytag gas cooktops. I was able to contact Whirlpool Corporation’s representative [REDACTED] via Maytag’s website regarding restitution. After two weeks of email conversations and a 5 minute inspection by [REDACTED] that simply verified the information I had already provided, [REDACTED] informed me that WhirlpoolCorp. would mail me a $250.00 check three weeks after turning over the appliance to another representative. I find this offer to be disingenuous at best, and am not inclined to accept it.

I demand to be reimbursed S 1680.98 for the new gas cooktop I had to purchase on short notice during a busy holiday season along with $500.00 for the emotional trauma this incident caused my family and an additional$500.00 for my time that appears to have been wasted by this whole ordeal. I will expect a response to this letter within 30 days of receipt or will consider my demand for reimbursement of $2680.98 accepted in full and will take action accordingly.

Our Whirlpool gas range is a hazard. When the oven has been on for 45 minutes or longer you cannot turn the burners on or off. If they are on you can’t turn them off and if they are off you can’t turn them on. It’s been this way since we purchased it. Whirlpool change two burner valves and was supposed to do all four but drug their feet until they told us it was out of warranty. It cost us $187.00 to replace the other two valves but none of it mattered because you still can’t turn the valves when the over is on.

Once the burner was on low and a breeze blew it out and I had to run to the basement to turn the gas valve off to the range. Luckity we were close and smelled the gas.

We put up with it for too long and finally got fed up enough to file the complaint. We’ve talked to Whirlpool on numerous occasions.

Since that time when the over is on 45 minutes or more you can’t turn the burners on or off. If the are on you can’t turn them off and if they are off you can’t turn them on. Once we had a burner on low and a breeze blew it out and I had to run to the basement to turn it off at the gas pipe. Luckily we were near and smelled the gas.

We called for service under warranty they came out 3 time and replaced 2 burner valves. It did not fix the problem. They said they were going to replace the other 2 but dragged their feet until they told me it was no longer under warranty. It cost me $187.00 to replace the other 2 valves but nothing fixed the problem.

We finally got fed up enough to file a complaint.

New gas range was installed 2 months after purchase. Since then when the oven is on for 45 minutes user can’t turn the burners on or off.

Glass front door on Whirlpool Acubake gas range exploded. The oven was not one and had not been used in over 18 hours. The oven is 5 years old and the door had been serviced when it was only a couple of months old because of extreme humidity build up between the inside glass panel and the outside glass panel. We have not had issues with humidity build up between the glass panels for over 4 years; the problem appeared to be fixed when they replaced the insulation in the door panel. Purchased a Whirlpool Gas Range from Lowe’s this week. Got it home and paid plumber to hook up. Used it for the first time today. Stove top there is no problem; however I baked some chicken in the oven and the oven glass door got sooooooooooo hot that you could be burned. I was not burned, because I was pre warned via internet. There is no warning of any kind about the hot door. Dangerous. Luckily I have no small children in my home, but a child could be seriously burned by this oven door. There are complaints on the Lowe’s web site, but I discovered these after I had purchased the stove. While searching the internet to see if there was a replacement door available, I discovered others have the same issue with this stove. There needs to be some kind of fix for this problem. I thought Whirlpool was always a good product, but I am upset about this range. The item number is Model WFG320M0BS, Free Standing Whirlpool Smooth Surface Freestanding 4.8-cu ft Electric Range (Black-on-Stainless) (Common: 30-in; Actual: 29.875-in). I guess I am stuck with this range, but I would hate to think because I did not report some child is going to be burned. One review stated that her child got second degree burns from this stove. Please do the right thing an investigate this problem. Maybe there is a way to correct this by issuing a better insulated replacement door.

The product, in the report: Gas Range with self-cleaning convection oven

I purchased this gas range from the Home Depot in March. After using it, I discovered that the heat that emerges from it during cooking with the oven or convection, gets so hot that my microvwave hood fan comes on automatically. The entire door which is a very large surface is not only hot to the touch but scalding hot. The knobs on the stove are also untouchable while the oven is on. The handle to open the door is also hot because the exhaust from the oven apparently is along the entire top of the oven door. There is no safety notice about the entire door and knobs being hot. A small child could not touch any part of the face of the oven without getting seriously burnt. Just this week my mom was cooking and leaned against the oven and burned both her legs. Which is what prompted me to make the call to Whirlpool.

Caller stated that she is having problems with her range. The burners does not ignite immediately when it is turned on, which causes gas to escape. The paint on the stove had started to peel. The rubber seal for the oven had melted. (7/2014) She contacted the retailer and was informed that the unit was no longer under warranty.

Caller stated that the problems of the burners started about 2 years but she only noticed it last year. The rubber seal for the oven that melted she noticed 7/20/15. She contacted the store again sometime this year and they informed her that a service technician could be sent out at her expense.

Caller feels that the range is unsafe and should be reported.

The submitter is filing a report on a gas range which he feels poses a fire hazard. The submitter purchased the range and put it in a house that he rents to a family.

On 03/01/15 (estimated) the submitter’s tenant used the right front burner and when the tenant tried to turn the knob to the “off” position the knob would not move. The knob seemed stuck or locked and would not move in any direction. The tenant removed the pot from the burner and called the submitter. The right front burner was on high heat level. The submitter arrived about 20 minutes later. The submitter used the oven door to pull the unit out and away from the cabinet. The submitter moved the unit to the left so he could get to the back of the unit and shut the gas valve off. Once the gas valve was shut off the submitter noticed the burner turned off.

On 03/02/15 (estimated) the consumer contacted a local technician to examine the unit. The technician told the consumer that the unit needed a new valve. The consumer went to a local appliance store to order the part which cost $85.

On 03/07/15 (estimated) the consumer receive the replacement part and the consumer installed the part in the range.

On 03/09/15 the submitter contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The firm told the submitter that the unit is out of warranty but he could purchase an extended warranty. The submitter was concerned that the valve was damaged on a relatively new unit but the consumer states the firm did not seem concerned with the safety hazard the range may pose.

The unit is used daily. There are no prior.

On Christmas morning, while my wife was warming our empty gas oven, smoke began pouring from the oven with a strong electrical smell. When she opened the oven door, there were flames shooting up from underneath. She turned off the oven and doused the flames with water. My daughter then unplugged the gas range. We had had a family dinner on Christmas eve, and the oven was in use most of the day. At the very end, my wife had noticed some smoke coming from the range top, which stopped when the oven was turned off.

The lower part of the outer metal part below the Feature Guide is starting to get brownish discoloration or starting to smell burnt. When the unit cooled off the the FEATURE GUIDE key pad is wrinkled. The fish being broiled is not burnt.

(07/5/2014) The consumer stated that someone leaned over the stove and accidently pushed in the knobs. This happened again on 8/20. The consumer is concerned that the knobs can be touched lightly and will come on causing gas to escape.

The terrible odor from the gas is the only clue that the stove is turned on. Certainly this is helpful, but - very dangerous if not detected soon enough. It has happened too many times now. And if it ignites, the flame is high.

The consumer did call Sound Furniture and spoke to their repairman. While he hasn’t heard this from customers, he did know a person who said it happened to a relative.

The consumer’s son suggested covers for the knobs, but it is difficult for them to use them due to arthritic hands. The consumers check frequently, particularly at bedtime. As you can see, this is a major concern.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I am a Texas Professional Real Estate Inspector licensed by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). [REDACTED] I discovered this defect while inspecting a brand new [REDACTED] in Katy, Texas.

The grates on the cooktop do not fit securely in the “dimples” (indentions) on the rim/edge of the cooktop. The grates easily slide off the rim/edge of the cooktop. This could cause serious injury if the grates slip or move off the rim/edge of the cooktop. This is a, in my opinion, is a major safety issue that requires immediate action.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gas Range

I have a Whirlpool gas range purchased 13-Oct-2012. When you stand too close to it, the gas will come on. Often times, you don’t realize it until you smell the gas throughout the house. This happens frequently. There doesn’t appear to be any type of safety device to prevent this. My dad is almost 84 years old and lives with us now. Though he is very aware of things, has no sense of smell. I’m so afraid the house is going explode one day due to this problem. It doesn’t seem to matter who is at the stove; my husband, dad, son, or myself, the gas arbitrarily comes on if slightly touched. I called Sears and Whirlpool about this today, but they just want to send a repairman at the cost of $75-$125 for a service call. I know I will likely have to do this, but it is apparent to me that there is no way we are the only ones experiencing this problem. Whirlpool basically just insinuated that it must not have been too much of a problem since I waited almost two years to report it. I told [REDACTED] at Whirlpool I had my other range almost 30 years without it ever coming like this. I also told her that she should be looking at it like I do...only two years and already fed up with the range. It’s a death trap.

In the Incident Date box below, I will put the latest date of occurrence, but it happens very frequently.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Range Model Number GS773LXSS 0 Serial Number RT1812687

I have a Whirlpool Range Model GS773LXSS0 Serial Number RT1812687. I called Whirlpool because of an obvious and dangerous defect in their range. If you accidentally brush against the knobs and don’t know you even hit the knob, the burners will turn on without igniting and gas will pour into the room. I recently walked into my house and the entire house was full of gas and the fireplace was on. It took over 30 minutes to clear the house of the gas. We were lucky that the entire house didn’t explode and go up in flames. We have had two other instances in the past month in which this has happened and we have had to open our windows and doors to clear the house. Something needs to be done immediately to correct this action of Whirlpool’s faulty oven. I have notified the Whirlpool company and they do not care that their oven could cause costumers to die. When I was talking to the Whirlpool representative they told me it was something that could not be corrected. So I told them. “ You mean to tell me that you know you have a defective appliance that could kill someone and you are doing nothing to fix this problem?” and [REDACTED] the Whirlpool representative replied” This is the way it was designed and there is nothing we can do about it.” So I guess Whirlpool is telling me that I can go buy another range because there is nothing that they will do about it and that they do not consider it a defect even though according to their own representative the company is aware that this range is extremely dangerous. I wonder how many people have died due to this issue. I thought that the US government required all appliances to be built to certain safety specifications. I thought on ovens it was required that you have to PUSH in and turn for the burners to light. With my oven you don’t push in but it lights if you brush against it and you don’t even know that gas is spewing into the house. How many consumers have gone to bed not realizing that gas was coming out of their range and have died due to CO2 poisoning? Something needs to be done immediately to protect the health and safety of Whirlpool customers. Sincerely [REDACTED]

Caller stated that the gas range while it was being pre-heated for 30 seconds, she noticed that there were flames in the bottom of the oven. She stated that the day before she had cooked something in the lower oven and contents spilled in it . She cleaned it manually and when she used it later she smelled a burning odor and then she noticed that there were flames erupting from it, She powered it off but the flames persisted. She was able to use baking soda to contain the fire. She stated that her spouse removed the cover off the heating element and cleaned up the baking soda.

6/16/14 The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that they would forward the information to the right department.

Caller stated that the manual for the product does not instruct that the cover should be removed in case there is a spill. She feels that the manufacture should place instruction in the manual that the cover be removed so that this incident does not occur.

In the community kitchen of my apartment building, we have your worthless range Model # wfg510s0as2, serial # r42031939.

I have never ever come across a range that is unsafe and temperamental.

It does not take 8 hours to bake chicken breasts at 350 degrees. I have followed your instructions to the “T” trying to get this [REDACTED] range to work. I am forced to throw away my food because of the errors with this range. I am not the only resident of this malfunction.

The gas smell is so bad, that one can smell gas all the way to my apartment on the second floor of a three story building and my apartment is on the other side of the building approx 1 block away.

According to your manual, one has to turn the burners on the stove in order to get the oven to work. Puleeze. Your Electronic Controls section is sorely lacking information.

There are approximately 100 residents and this affects them as well. This is the reason why I selected 10 victims.

THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE NOT A CUTESY ISSUE.

The product, in the report: Range - Oven

Whirlpool Gold gas range repeatedly ‘runs away’ and the oven burner stays on, burning food and in one case starting a fire in the oven. I have contacted Whirlpool safety and they have sent service technicians to my home several times. They could not duplicate the problem and ultimately blamed the issue on ‘user error’.

The latest incident was recorded and can be viewed on YouTube. In it, the oven is set at 200 degrees and it overheats to the point where it sends a remote digital thermometer off range.

We have a Whirlpool Gas Range Model# WFG710HOAS, Serial # R21611731. I heated it to 450º and while I was baking, I was also cooking on top of the stove and needed to get a lid out of the storage drawer. I actually dropped the lid as it was as hot as the oven and that should not be. I am just thankful I didn’t ask my granddaughter to get the lid for me. When you look In the drawer you can see the flame from the oven and it needs to have something between the oven and the drawer to prevent this happening. What If a paper towel or pot holder had been in that drawer,we could be dead from a fire. We contacted Whirlpool with no results. Just their standard answer. Have you ever checked the temp.in the storage drawer of an oven? If it was the a broiler I would understand, but this is simply a storage drawer.Something has to be done about this, it is dangerous and a fire hazard.

I have an Whirlpool ACCUBAKE range. The product, in the report: Whirlpool gas range Model# GFG461lVS 2/Seriai#Rl2819998. This product was included in our new home. We moved in 8/23/13.

Stove top burners come on very easily. When putting something in microwave or sometimes walking by to get to a cabinet the burners turn on. Evidently I must brush against them when I go by. They should not come on from such a slight touch. Repairmen were here today to install a vent for the microwave oven. They put a drop cloth on stove to protect it and then went outside to continue the installation. Luckily my husband was here and smelled gas- the burner had turned on. This is a potentially very dangerous situation. We do not have children in the home but anyone who has this range could easily have a fire or a dangerous situation from gas leaking into the home. I contacted Whirlpool and they told me to contact parts for a bushing that would make the knobs harder to turn on. The parts department said they had no such part for this range. This range was new when we moved into our just constructed home 2 years ago. I think Whirlpool should be required to provide a fix for this.

The product, in the report: Single family natural gas kitchen cook stove

My mother has a Whirlpool Natural Gas Cook Stove. It is model WFG51050AW, serial number R33570420. This burner knobs on the front of the stove use a very weak spring mechanism to keep the burner knob from accidentally being turned and thus igniting the burner. On three occassions my mother has reached up over or beside the stove to put something in a cabinet and the unit was lit when she has brushed the knobs. Due to the type of clothing she was wearing she did not catch her clothing on fire. This is a safety hazard!

Most people expect that this will only happen when a “larger” person hits the knob. My mother is 5-6 and weighs about 120 lbs. I was able to walk up to the stove and catch the knob with my belt buckle and cause it to turn. It did not turn to the ignition point, but natural gas flowing.

The repair man came out and stated that there is nothing he can do about this. This is the way the stove was engineered.

Older model stoves required a more substantial forward motion to allow the knob to be turned.

With this model it would be easy for a child to light the stove and catch combustibles on/near the stove on fire. It would be just as easy for an adult to brush up against the stove and cause it to ignite.

I am reporting this for my mother as I am the [REDACTED] for the Volunteer Fire Department that serves that area. Any contact with the victim will need to be scheduled through me. Thanks, [REDACTED]

I forgot to mention just what I meant by the knobs to turn on the burners “work too easily.” If I am reaching over the range, such as cleaning the backstop, stirring on the back burner, or cleaning the cupboard door overhead, just the motion of my tummy against the burners will turn them on. As I said...to easily turned!

Dear Sirs: I purchased a Whirlpool gas range #GR-WP-WFG51050AW from our local dealer, Judd & Black, on June 27, 2012, total cost including installation $862.36. In January of 2013, the oven would not light on several occasions. Once, the room was so full of gas that I called the fire department to check it out. Judd and Black sent out an employee who replaced the oven starter under warranty. The past few weeks again the oven would light only sporadically and I feel this could be a real hazard if we didn’t stand right over it. I have felt I necessary for safety’s sake to replace the stove. I contacted Judd & Black who did not even say they were sorry were having trouble but gave me a quote on a similar size [REDACTED]. I have since purchased another stove from a different supplier. I feel strongly that Whirlpool should recall their gas ranges with this oven lighting system as they are potentially a serious hazard.

    Very truly yours,

ISSUE: A slight tap or bump to the stove knobs can turn them enough to allow gas to flow without being aware it has happened. The knob turns slightly but not enough for the igniter switch to come on and light the gas. No clicking sound is heard. Whirlpool 30 in. Freestanding Gas Range w/ AccuBake® Model # WFG510S0AW1 Purchased 10/1/2013 at Home Depot Noticed several incidences of the knobs turning a bit and gas leaking - usually while cooking. 10/18/13 came home to house full of leaked gas - called Whirlpool (WP)- closed for weekend. 10/21/13 Called WP to report concerns about knobs and leaking gas 10/24/13 WP sent out Appliance Express who did an inspection in response to concerns of gas leakage caused by the knobs moving just enough to turn on the gas but not enough to engage the ignition spark when brushed up against unknowingly. The technician sent WP a report saying this is just the design and the stove is not leaking gas. Told I would hear back from WP in a few days. I have not heard back yet. I notice today (10/29/13) the technician’s report sent to WP gives an incorrect serial number - off by one number. I will contact and correct. It is difficult to visually see or notice when the knob has turned unless you are standing over it and looking directly at it. This has happened numerous times even with an awareness this occurs and being extremely careful and mindful around the stove. I have “caught” the knobs turned and the gas leaking several times and came home 10/18/13 after being out for several hours to find the house full of enough of gas to smell it outside. I promptly called WP about it this issue but it was Friday after hours and I had to wait until Monday to contact them. I also called Home Depot but the manager was off. I have played phone tag with Home Depot since then and only spoke with [REDACTED] today 10/29/13 who said he will make a call and get back with me. My daughter was cooking last night and accidentally turned the knobs on four times with her (not big) belly just standing there. So easy. When she came in to clean up after dinner 30 minutes later, she discovered one of the knobs was on even after she had checked to make sure they were all off before leaving the kitchen. Somebody probably unknowingly bumped it - again... it is so easy to do. Last night before I went to bed, I went into the kitchen to get a drink of water and the gas was on. Once again, the knob was turned ever so slightly and I wouldn’t have noticed but I smelled gas. I don’t know how the knob was turned on but I know it doesn’t take much - just a little bump when you didn’t know you did. Everyone else was asleep. We are all very conscientious and careful and yet this still happens. My old stove required you use effort to push in the knob before you could turn it. The design on this stove takes just a flick of effort to do the same thing. This is very scary to me. My best friend and her two brothers died due to a gas leak and were gone overnight. Huge loss. I have made calls to both Whirlpool and Home Depot about this issue and am waiting for a response. I know this is a highly rated stove (It is just what I was looking for) and I feel devastated to have experienced this issue. Due to the dangers of leaking gas, I feel it is important to report what I feel is a design defect that could cost lives if not addressed promptly. Sorry Whirlpool this is otherwise a wonderful stove.

The knobs on my gas range will turn part way on if something lightly brushes up against them. Gas will be released into the room. The stove does not light because the knob stops before it gets to the point where the striking unit starts striking It happened once just as I was leaving the house. I was gone for a couple of hours and when I returned the house was full of gas.

I did report this to Whirlpool and they sent a service person to my home. He said there was nothing he could do to prevent the knob from freely turning, to the point it releases gas but stops turning before it reached the striking unit.

this has happened several times when I was home but so far I have caught it before I was “gassed” or before it started a fire in my home

Something needs to be done when something can just brush over the knob turn it about a half inch, which is just enough to release gas but not far enough on to reach the striking unit to light the burner.

My gas range (about 1-1/2 years old) has all of the knobs on the front of the stove (by your stomach). These knobs turn very easily with only the slightest push to them. Three different times, these knobs where turned without my knowledge and created a fire! I have contacted Whirlpool, along with the service department and they have insisted there stoves are designed correctly and within industry standards. Even while on the phone with them, they asked me to turn each know without pushing in on them and behold, one of the knobs turned. I have told them if they could just put a stiffer spring in the knob, they wouldn’t have such a hazard. Two of the fires were small, but one could have brought down my entire house. The gas was on for probably two hours without me knowing it and then whoosh, just a click of the knob and I had a very scary situation on my hands.

I am not a regular internet user, and would welcome a phone call from you. The State of Minnesota Fire Marshall said I would probably hear back from one of you two investigators.

Thank you very much for looking into this.

The product, in the report: Gas Range

The consumer stated that knobs on the oven are over sized. The consumer stated that even bumping up against the knobs turn the burners on. The consumer stated that sometimes the gas ignites and other times it only leaks. The consumer stated that this problem started soon after purchase.

Last night (8/5/13), the consumer stated that her whole house was filled with gas. She was woken up by her dog. The consumer stated that she opened all of the windows and turned on the ceiling fans to let the gas escape.

Consumer put older knobs from her previous range on to the new range about a week after the purchase. The older knobs are smaller. The consumer stated that the incidents still occur but less frequently with the smaller knobs.

The consumer contacted the manf today (8/6/13) and they informed her that this was a known problem. The consumer was informed to go purchase safety knob protectors. The consumer stated that the manf should provide the safety knobs if this is a known problem.

The consumer stated that she still uses the range but is extra cautious.

There are no recalls on this model.

I purchased a new free standing oven/stove and noticed that it is extremely easy to accidentally turn on the gas by bumping the knobs.

    It’s a whirlpool 30” 5-burner free standing range (model WFG524SLAB)

We’ve had the stove for maybe 2 months and had the gas on at least twice from bumping it.

The consumer says that when the unit is pre heating she notices an acrid smell. When she opened the oven door it would burn her eyes. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who would send out a technician.

The technician said that this is normal and not harmful. Her contractor however said that it is not normal and needs to be inspected right away. The contractor scheduled another technician who determined that when the unit is set to preheat, it leaks carbon monoxide. Atmos energy is the provider for natural gas which heats the range; it was their technician who utilized the meter to detected carbon monoxide. Report from Atmos Energy is enclosed.

Over the years she has experienced numbness on her lips and ringing in her ears, and headaches.

Her next step is to contact the manufacturer.

UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: From the time of installation of our Whirlpool gas range (SUper Capacity 465, Model SF395LEEZ0) purchased by my mother [REDACTED] in 1997, for my husband and me when she came to live with us, we complained to Sears technicians of an acrid odor emanating from the oven during the preheat phase (approx. 10 minutes) that stung our eyes and burned our noses each time the oven was turned on. A Master Service Protectin Agreement was purchased at the same time the appliance was purchased and has been renewed without lapse of coverage since original purchase. Subsequent visits by Sears tecnhnicians always resulted in the same determination: there was nothing abnormal in the operation of the range. All three of us were in excellent health in 1997. However, over the 16-year period since the installtion of the range, both my mother and my husband developed congestive heart failure. I developed arrhythmia as confirmed by a cardiologist’s heart monitor. I have also developed an auto-immune disease and intermittent numbness of my lips. Over that same period of 16 years, a series of three pet cockatiels were found dead in the bottom of their cage. They were not suffereing from any prior illness. Both my mother and my husband are now deceased.

While it may not be possible to prove conclusively that there is any direct connection between the above stated ill effects sustained over the period of time since the purchase of the gas range, there remains the question of what adverse health effects may have been attributed to short, ten minute bursts of carbon monoxide gas being release into our home almost daily (and frequently, more than once daily). Certainly, it appears that Sears technicians were negligent in not having adequate equipment to test for gas leaks as did Atmos Energy.

The odor that the gas company incorporates into naturally odorless gas is doubtlessly a life-saving safety measure but is rendered ineffective for the welfare of their customers or if they lack necessary equipment to check for life threatening emissions.

I was baking a pizza in my 5 year old Whirlpool oven on 425 degrees. As I opened the oven door, a loud pop sounded and then the glass on the oven door exploded out the bottom and sides of the door. The front glass is completely cracked but intact and one or more of the inside glass plates are shattered. There was no previous damage that occurred to the glass or door. Luckily my small children were not in the kitchen, as there were hundreds of pieces of hot glass everywhere.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gas Range Model Nos. WFG361LV & WFG374LVS.

Please be advised that I represent a housing cooperative as their legal counsel. In 2011 my client entered into an appliance replacement program for 292 ranges, refrigerators, and dishwashers from Lowe’s. The ranges in question are Whirlpool WFG361LV & WFG374LVS.

After the appliances were installed, we found that the operation of the knobs on the gas ranges were defective. Our members have experienced the knobs being too easily engaged by lightly being brushed against, releasing gas while not igniting the flame. We contacted Whirlpool, who sent engineers out to test the ranges. They maintain that the ranges are safe and in compliance with safety regulations.

Since then, we have received multiple complaints from our members who say that the ranges are still turning on when they brush up against them (for example, when they are reaching for a microwave or a cupboard above the range). If one doesn’t notice that the knob is slightly turned, gas will seep out. We have had multiple complaints that members have awoke in the morning to the smell of gas, or have returned home from work to the smell of gas in their house. The only way to fix the problem is to remove the knobs from the ranges and place them on the counter. This creates a dangerous situation, and is only a matter of time before there is an explosion or a fire due to the seeping gas and the defective ranges.

My wife and myself have accidentally leaned against our new Whirlpool range and the burner quickly ignited to a high flame within several inches of us. And on Mon, 2/11/13 we had a technician from Abt Appliance in Glenview, IL where we bought this range install a new Microwave Oven above this range. This technician said he had more that 15 years of experience installing microwave ovens, etc and he too leaned against this range thus setting off one of the front gas burners at high flame. He too was within inches of getting burned.

I maintain that this is a poor and dangerous design and at least should have some kind of a “grill” or “guard” preventing these knobs from being accidentally pressed.

I purchased a Whirlpool gas range Model #: WFG510S0AS from Lowe’s in September 2012. • (AccuBake® temperature management system - a built-in sensor monitors oven temperature and controls the cooking elements • Custom broil allows you to set your preferred broiling temperature in 5-degree increments) I noticed that when using the oven it would click off and on often making a loud puff sound. I assumed this was the way this oven operated. Today I had set the oven to preheat to 350 degrees and walked out of my kitchen into another room. About ten minutes later I could smell a gas odor in my home. I went and checked the stove only to discover that the electronic ignition had not started the oven.

My concern is that this is very dangerous because if a stove or oven are suppose to have these safety features on them when you purchase them. A consumer do not purchase these items with the expectation of them breaking down in the matter of a few months and little use of the stove/oven. This is very dangerous for people with small children, the elderly, physically challenged individuals, and smokers. The gas fumes escapes very quickly.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 30” free-standing gas range WFG371LVB

We purchased a Whirlpool model WFG371LVB 30” free-standing gas range in early 2011. Almost every time we would reach over the range to get something from an upper cabinet we would lightly bump the control knob on the front of the unit. This would either allow gas to escape without igniting or would ignite the burner as we were reaching over the unit. Several times it came close to starting clothing on fire.

Because this involved a safety issue we contacted Sears where we purchased the range. The technician determined it was design flaw and nothing could be done. He suggested putting child protectors over the control knobs. We attempted to do this but the control knobs are too large for the available child protectors.

Because this inadvertent gas escape/burner lighting was continuing and we believe it to be a safety issue, we offered a report to the CPSC in October 2011. (See report No. 20111005-13818-2147474642.) In talking with the CPSC the only suggestion given was to contact the manufacturer again. The manufacturer has no suggestions or remedies for the problem.

The problem continues to this day and it is only a matter of time before something more serious happens (gas explosion, clothing fire, etc.). In looking over the CPSC reports I found that others have submitted similar reports for the same problem. (See report Nos. 20110905-C74BA-2147475640, 20120412-E138C-2147468480, 20120502-78F2F-2147467940.)

Because this is a serious safety issue we believe that Whirlpool should immediately recall the range or offer a repair kit to correct the problem at no cost to the consumer.

The product, in the report: Gas slide in stove

I have a newer whirlpool slide in gas stove, approximately 3 years, its model GW397LXUB05. I want to alert you to what appears to be a manufacture defect in the assembly and routing of the gas tubing line that runs up the right side of the stove to the 4 burner connection point. I smelled gas in my home around the stove on 10-13-12, a very minor smell of gas but I isolated it to the stove on the right side. After doing the soap suds procedure on the common valve connection points in the stove with no evidence of leakage I then proceeded to trace the path of the gas tubing line mentioned above. What I found is that the oven door spring that mounts on the right side of the stove was causing the problem. When the door is opened and closed it rubs up and down the inner side of approximately one inch of the gas tubing. It had scratched a one inch slice in the tube over the past few years and finally put a small puncture in it. My entire house could have blown up if the stove were in use and the oven door spring continued to dig deeper into this gas tube. I would like this issue identified by whirlpool as a problem and have this stove recalled / serviced. I have pictures of the side of the stove with the spring and gas tubing proximity identified, since the tubing has the gouge on the inner side it doesn’t show. I used a small dental mirror to view that from the front of the tubing. In the pictures you will see that the spring hook is not touching the gas line, this is because the side panel is off to take the pictures. When the side panel is reinstalled it pushes the gas line tubing directly against the spring mech. I did not receive a return call or email reply from Whirlpool corporate, they would not speak to me. I did however reach the service department that did come out and replace the tubing gas line.

flames were about 1/4/ to 1/2 way around the front portion of a burner.

Caller cannot see what is going on below the burner portion.

He states that if gas and/or flame is coming out of any area where it shouldn’t be coming out of then he believes it to be a fire safety issue.

He contacted the manufacturer on October 4th, 2012 and states that the manufacturer saw no danger, offered free repair service but will charge caller for any parts needed to repair.

Caller has shut gas off to the cooktop and convection oven by tripping breaker.

Caller states that he paid over $2500 and he doesn’t expect problems to involve gas leaks or breakdown of the burners.

He is asking that CPSC investigate this product, notify public and generate a recall with repair and parts at manufacturer expense.

My wife brunt her finger on teh exterior of our new oven door. The exterior temperature is extrememly hot and dangerous, especially becasue we have 3 young children.

WE called Whirlpool and htey sent out a tech who agreed it was unreasonally hot. When he called Whirlpool the company techs stated it is operating within specifications. This is unreasonable and if true, many people will get 1st and 2nd degree burns on their hands and children are at risk of burning their faces and other parts of their bodies.

After pushing back on Whirlpool they have agreed to buy back the oven, but I am more concerned that they are claiming it is operating as designed. It is dangerous.

Accidental turning on burners of gas stove. The product is Whirlpool Gas Stove Model # GFG461LVS2, SERIAL # R12820116. This product was installed by the builder of our new home as a standard option. Since February of this year there has been approximately 6 occurrences of accidentally turning on burner by brushing up against the burner control knob. This occurred without our awareness until we smelled gas fumes. Apparently just brushing up against knobs while working in kitchen, using microwave above stove, or using controls on back of stove pushed knobs in and rotated enough to open valve without igniting. These controls push in very easily and turn without resistant. Two women in our 60’s occupy this home. We are of sound mind, aware of our surroundings and are not obese with big abdomens( I weigh 130 pounds and am 65 inches tall). I feel that just doing our routine cooking activities should not pose a potential hazard or even death! There is no way to lock these controls. I feel this is a very unsafe stove if there were children or elders in the home because it is a hazard to even us active, alert and careful adults.

I talked with Whirlpool and they said there is no problem with this product and advised to not lean against the knobs!

I would like to get this info out hoping that it may prevent injury or even death to others. I plan on getting rid of this stove and will not purchase another Whirlpool appliance. I can afford to purchase another stove unlike a lot of other individuals. My conscious will not allow me to sale this stove. I will have someone cart it off to the dump.

The consumers husband received a gash to his left thumb. They saw that there were sharp tabs on the back of the range which caused his injury.

(6/29/2012) The consumers husband went to Oswego Heath Urgent Care in Fulton, NY. He received adhesive stitches to his left thumb.

(7/2/2012) The consumer contacted the manufacturer and they stated that they would send out a technician.

(7/5/2012) The technician came out to her home and noted that there was a safety issue with the stove in regards to the rough tabs on the top portion of the back holding the steel plate, and that there were no technical malfunctions.

Note: The consumer stated that she went to another retailer to see if the stoves have the same tabs on the back. A representative was called over and the consumer confided in them to see if they thought it was a safety hazard and they agreed.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold 30” slide in gas oven/cooktop.

I have a Whirlpool Gold Gas oven/cooktop, model # GW395LEPSO1, that I put on self-cleaning mode. After an hour of being in this mode, the oven shut off, and the LED panel on the front went dark. The oven would not un-lock, even after 5 days. I called a repairman to come out, and after he replaced a very expensive fuse, he commented that this was the third one he had replaced the same part on this week. I checked on-line and it is quite apparent Whirlpool is well aware of this happening to many consumers. Why have a self-clean mode when so many people are having to replace expensive parts after trying this. Also, this same oven has on more than 1 occasion started cooking at extreme temperatures - ex: set at 350 degrees, and suddenly the internal temperature jumps up to extreme heat, burning food in minutes. After replacing the thermostat in the past, this still happens from time to time. I am very concerned about potential fire hazards due to the product malfunction.

The product, in the report: Double-oven, 4-burner kitchen stove (gas)

Recently, I awoke to the smell of natural gas. Natural gas was coming from an unlit burner on my kitchen stove. I determined that one of the burner control knobs was just barely off the OFF position (about 1/8th turn toward LITE position) and unlit gas was pouring out of the burner. Later testing determined that it took ADDITIONAL knob movement to reach the LITE position and ignitor initiation. My wife and I took over three hours to safely ventilate the house, even though the oven had been releasing gas for little more than one hour.

I contacted the manufacturer and their representative asserted that the stove was functioning as designed. It is SUPPOSED to release gas even though the LITE position (and ignitor function) has not been reached by the control knob. When I explained that I thought this seemed unsafe and certainly was not the same operation as my previous gas stove, which did not release gas until the ignitor was functioning, she again told me that was the way it was designed to function.

I had apparently contacted the control knob with my clothing while leaning across the stove to wipe the rear control/indicator panel. Again, the control knob was less than 1/8 turn from the off position - midway between OFF and LITE - and this allowed gas to flow freely from the unlit burner.

Am I crazy, or shoudn’t a stove’s burner release gas only AFTER the LITE position is achieved and the ignitor begins to function?

At least three times a burner on our new gas range was inadvertently turned on by bumping into the control knob. The gas was on but the knob not turned far enough to the left to activate the igniter. I called Whirlpool yesterday and they said a service man could adjust the control. When the serviceman came today ( 5/02/2012) he said there was nothing he could do. He agreed with me that it was a design flaw. To turn on the burners you must push in the control knob then turn it to the left until the electric ignition clicks, lighting the gas. The problem is that the resistance to pushing in the knob is too weak, making it possible to turn on the gas without knowing it.

We bought this range and the slightest brush against the cooktop knobs turns them on so that the gas releases. We have had it happen several times but were here and noticed right away. Yesterday, my Husband came home and the whole house was filled with gas! We called Whirlpool and they sent someone out but they couldn’t do anything since techncally it is not broken but “functioning properly”. They did agree it is a design flaw and suggested that we get safety locks. Not really what I had in mind when I bought a streamlined stove.

While the technician was at the consumer’s home he contacted the firm to order the part. The consumer states that she was advised that he would come out to the home to make the necessary repairs when the part came in.

No repairs were made and the technician left the home. The consumer received a phone call on 4/11/2012 from the technician advising him that there was no glass needed for the range and it there was no defect with it.

The consumer then contacted the retailer where they were not willing to offer any assistance and advised her to contact the firm

The consumer contacted the firm and was advised that they would not issue a refund for the purchase of the appliance and that she should contact the retailer.

The consumer has not made any final decisions but fears that her children could be severely burned if the oven is use.

My concern is with the Whirlpool gas stove top. The cast iron grates are not level thus causing pans to rock. The main cross grate is fine but the smaller pieces that extend out from the outer edge toward the center of the quadrants are too small. A 5” diameter pan will tip over. Even a 6” pan is too small. Luckily I have held on to the pan while I cooked or caught it before it fell. I feel this is an important issue that should be addressed before a serious accident occurs.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 30” freestanding gas range. Color is white.

I purchased a Whirlpool gas range on January 25, 2012. After using the appliance for exactly one month, I called the appliance dealer (on February 25, 2012) to report extreme heat coming out of the oven vent while baking (at 350 degrees F) and that the face of the stove where the knobs are located also heats to a dangerously high temperature - easily causing a burn within seconds of touching the surface - 120 degrees F. While simultaneously using one front burner to heat a kettle of water to boiling, which takes approximately 7 minutes, that temperature increases to 138 degrees F.

The appliance dealer sent a service technician to my home on March 5, 2012. He reported that the oven flue was venting properly and the internal temperature of the oven was heating as expected. He verbally stated that the front panel where the knobs are located was very hot and encouraged me to contact Whirlpool.

I called Whirlpool on March 5, 2012 to report the problem. They sent a service technician to my home on March 6, 2012 who confirmed that the flue was attached properly. Again, he agreed that the surface of the front panel was very hot.

I called Whirlpool again on March 6, 2012 to report that I believed the range was unsafe to use. I told them that I wanted to return the product and receive a refund for my purchase. Whirlpool responded by stating that they would only address warranty issues (i.e., parts that needed to be fixed) and required a service technician to declare the product to be unsafe. They would not accept a return or refund my money.

Another service technician is scheduled to come to my house to look at the appliance on March 12, 2012, but I do not anticipate any changes to the “diagnosis” of the appliance.

This product is unsafe, as a non-cooking surface becomes dangerously hot during typical use.

My husband and I purchased a Whirlpool 30” Gas Range Model #wfg374lvq on 10-10-2011 from Lowes Home Center. I first used the self cleaning feature on 2-23-2012 and the temperature sensor failed, melted the control board rendering the oven unusable. Also, the control knobs for the cooking surface are very loose and the slightest bump causes the gas to flow without ignighting. This has happened several times and although my husband and I are aware of the problem and are careful we have come home to a house filled with gas. I have reported these problems to Lowe’s and filed a complaint with their appliance department. I requested a replacement of the range but was denied because of a 90 day period to file a complaint had passed and that the control board and sensor can be replaced. My concern is not so much about the sensor but about the controls for the range top which I was told by the repairman could not be fixed. My feeling is that this product is unsafe and could potentially cause a fire, explosion or both especially if young children were in the home.

The product, in the report: Gas Oven Range combination

The gas powered oven has two heater elements, Broil and Bake. When firing-up either of the heaters, gas is first emitted from the selected element depending on the function selected (Broil or Bake). A spark is then emitted the starters of both elements. In my case the Bake function spark starter did not start but the Broil did emit a spark. Gas was however emitted from the Bake heater element. The result is the emission of gas from the Bake element without ignition. Trouble shooting led to a bad earth connection thus not allowing the spark circuit to be completed.

The heater element and the spark igniter are contained on a single unit mounted to the frame of the oven cavity by two self tapping screws. The rear screw has a collar which holds the heater element through a hole to the oven wall. The collar allows the heater element to move forward/aft about 1/8”. This is probably to allow for any expansion of the heater element. The forward screw fastens the heater element to the oven wall through a forward/aft slot.

The problem occurred because the forward screw, which provides the earth circuit to the igniter had stripped its thread in the metal hole of the oven wall. Not only was the oven frame attachment hole enlarged because the screw had been over tightened but corrosion had developed between the oven frame and the heater element. This single screw is responsible for providing the earth circuit for the spark igniter.

It would be my opinion that the spark igniter earth circuit be provided by at least two screws, thus increasing the chance of a bad earth by 100%. Also the screw used should be of a non-self tapping type to ensure a good electrical connection is made. The manufacturer cannot control the precision of the self taped mounting hole size nore can the manufacturer ensure that the screw is not over tightened.

We’ve had this stove since 2001 and ignored the faulty oven ignition because after opening the door and letting it “air out” so to speak, we wait and later try to light it and it would light. The faulty lighting issue has been happening on and off, starting within the first year of ownership. Now that we have our 81 year old mother living with us, we are concerned that she might try to use the oven when we are not home and it might not light, hence causing a potentially serious safety issue. Now that this web site is available to protect the consumer, we have a way to get our concerns heard and maybe Whirlpool will provide a fix for this defect at no charge to the consumer.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Electric Gas Range

The consumer has a free standing gas range that was leaking gas. The consumer’s range is not a smooth top model. The consumer’s range is operated with dials at the range and the the oven is digital. The product has 2 aluminum gas lines behind the stove. One goes to the range and one to the oven. When the stove was assembled the galvanized steel over the gas line was touching the gas lines. The consumer theorizes when you fuse two metals the weaker metal (the galvanized one) would corrode faster. In the consumer’s case, both gas lines are leaking gas since the faulty metal has caused a corrosion. The consumer has never experienced any issues with the range prior. The consumer called the firm today and was informed that they have had no complaints of such incidents and agreed to send a technician at the expense of the consumer depending on the findings of the technician. The consumer has yet to call the seller of the product. The consumer stated by outward appearances the product shows no signs of damage. The consumer stated that the the product has not damaged his home. The consumer called the gas company of his area on October 24, 2011 and the technician revealed the corrosion of the pipes and shut off the gas line leading to his stove. The consumer has not been seen by a medical professional or called the fire department.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 30” freestanding gas range black sold by Sears Model # WFG371LVB

We purchased a Whirlpool 30” freestanding gas range - model WFG371LVB - from Sears in January 2011. The range works properly but there is a design flaw that is very dangerous.

The four burner controls are on the front of the stove. As one reaches over the stove to the back burners the control knobs can inadvertly turn slightly to the on position and release gas into the air but not far enough to ignite the burner. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN.

This has happened to us on numerous occasions since we purchased the range. The seriousness of this design flaw was evidenced the other evening when we unknowingly bumped the knob as we went to bed and found the house filled with gas in the morning. Fortunately, we had the bedroom door closed so the gas did not enter the bedroom or we could have been asphixiated!
