The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model 795.77544600
Upon opening the refrigerator this evening, we noticed a burning, electrical smell. With some investigation, we discovered the two lights housed at the “roof” of the refrigerator were not going out when the door was closed or the buttons depressed. We removed the housing, with gloves on, and it was warped and melted. We removed the bulbs...the area around them is brown and scorched. Hard to know what would have happened if we hadn’t discovered the problem when we did.

The product, in the report: Three door Refrigerator/Bottom Freezer with in door water dispenser and freezer interior ice maker.
A Kenmore Elite (Manufactured by LG) bottom freezer Refrigerator and purchased in 2006 has had issues with the lights not coming on or going off when the doors open or close. In one incident the lights did not go off and melted the light cover and housing. It continues to be an issue and causes the refrigerator to heat up and cook the food on the top shelf (e.g. [REDACTED]). This issue really worries me because it would tend to imply an electrical short or faulty electronics in the switches or elsewhere. In looking up the product for service I could find several other people have had the exact same problem within the last year on an item they purchased about the same time as me. Overall the quality of the product has been very poor. One of the rollers on a drawer broke early on, both drawers pop out feature failed to lock on closing within a couple years,

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator/freezer model 795.77543600
October 5, 2011: I noticed the refrigerater was warmer than normal. Food was warm because the interior lights would not shut-off. The light assembly was beginning to burn so I hit the circuit breaker and removed the two light bulbs. I turned the circuit breaker back on and the refrigerator temperature stabilized. I contacted Sears and provided the model number (795.77543600) and Serial number (611KR00393). Sears did not tell me that they had issued a Service Flash (SF46-515) about this problem.
The Sears Product Resolution Line (800-659-7026) has not been helpful. The light parts have been on backorder. The my sears.com web site documents that other owners of this product have experienced multiple failures of the lighting unit (assembly 6621JK2003B) and that the problem may be centered at the main board (part# 6871JB1423N) which has been replaced in some instances.

[REDACTED] attempted to locate the breakers to shut off the appliance however the panels were not marked for which unit they control. Therefore [REDACTED] simply unplugged the unit. [REDACTED] arrived and used thermal imager to find hot spots. They then removed the back and found an overheated motor. [REDACTED] crew set up an electric fan to ventilate the house. Once ventilated all units cleared.

Not said Made Oct 19, 2011, sent to the company Dec 9, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 23, 2011
The product, in the report: Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator
The consumer stated that her side by side refrigerator has 2 internal lights at the top of the refrigerator sporadically turn on when the refrigerator is closed. The light bulbs are each 60 watt appliance bulbs. The consumer stated that she would open her refrigerator find that her refrigerator has a burning smell and also find the light bulbs are very hot. The consumer felt that this issue could develop into a fire hazard. The consumer contacted the firm who is also the retailer, the same day of the incident. The firm agreed to send a technician that same day to inspect the side by side refrigerator. The technician had told her that her concern is indeed a safety hazard and that the current model of refrigerators made by the same firm have a different component to prevent this hazard from persisting. The technician stated that the control board is the reason that her refrigerator is apparently keeping the refrigerator lights on when the door is closed.
The consumer was told by the technician that she had to pay for the repair, estimated at over $400. The consumer told the technician that she would not pay for the service and the consumer had the lights removed by the technician on September 1st 2011. After the light bulbs were taken, out the burning smell went away. The technician documented the circuit board as the issue causing the problems with the refrigerator on his repair report.
The consumer found that there is no light switch to turn off the lights.

The product, in the report: Kenmore-Black-Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
I came home from being out for a few hours and opened my refrigerator to see that the whole electrical unit which is called the Cool Sense Electronic Temperature Control System had fallen off the interior top wall of the refrigerator. The bulbs remained on after it fell and were even burning the ceramic bulb holders to a dark brown. All the food in the top of the shelves had become warm - eggs, etc. The plastic cover for the bulbs had melted and warped. Apparently, the piece dropped off and the bulbs remained on and didn’t automatically shut off as it should. This exteme heat was very disconcerting as it could have caused a fire. We had to disconnect the whole temperature unit to make sure the lights didn’t stay on and start a fire while we slept that night.
We had not had any reason to believe this was a problem before this. There were no indications that anything was wrong, and nothing had been done to harm the electrical unit prior to this incident.
Concerned that this major issue could be more than the “regular” repair type issues, I looked on line to see if there were any recalls for this make and model. I did find that there are other incidents reported of this exact nature in the same make and model, but did not find any recalls. This alarms me because having an electrical problem of this type that is happening to others makes me question the safety of this product overall since it is not a one time incident.

No one hurt Made Oct 10, 2011, sent to the company Oct 18, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 1, 2011
The product, in the report: Kenmore ELITE Trio refrigerator, black, water in the left side of door, pull out lower freezer unit.
We purchased our Kenmore Elite refrigerator in June 2007. Within a month we started having issues with the model. First the waterline was found to be leaking, it ruined the floor and cabinets behind the unit. Then about two months later we noticed that it was warm, and cold in the refrigerator. Upon closer inspection we realized the lights had melted the plastic housing and created massive warping and melting of the inside. The Sears store sent a repair service person, and they replaced the unit. Now, 10/10/2011, the unit is doing the same now. The light stays on, but only shuts off when it gets overheated. We still have hot food. We had to remove the bulbs today. I really hope that Sears wises up and fixes this problem for good. There needs to be a recall on this very dangerous appliance.

When opening either door to the refrigerator he noticed on some occasions the light bulbs would be powered in the on position with the door closed or open.
On 10/6/2011 while retrieving some butter from a top self located under the housing of the light bulb he noticed that the butter had melted he unplugged the refrigerator and allowed it to cool down and opened the refrigerators door and when he attempted to remove the light bulb the housing that surrounds the light bulb is warped.
On 10/6/2011 he contacted the retailer and was informed that they had a service flash for certain serial numbers (same model numbers) and he was advised to contact the CPSC. He has a technician schedule to come out on 10/10/2011 to take a look at the unit.
The consumer indicated that by the light bulb staying in the on position while the door is closed could potentially pose as a fire or electrical hazard and to prevent that he has removed both light bulbs from both sides.

Kenmore Refridgerator model number 795.77312600 lights would not turn off even when doors were closed. Lightbulbs overheated and scorched their sockets. Melted Plastic Lightbulb housing. Inside of refrigerator was very warm. We had to remove the bulbs with hotpads for fear of this causing a house fire. We were forced to throw away all of the raw meat due to possible spoilage. There are many complaints of this happening on the internet and I hope it is taken seriously as the fire hazard that it is. Please urge Kenmore to recall this fridge.

As I looked up, I notoced the entire shroud that encompasses the lights was melted and burned. It seems that the lights never turned off, when the doors were closed. Anyways, it seems like a serious fire/safety issue to me, as I don’t know what would of happened if not caught in time.

Kenmore refrigerator model # 106.41512101 was producing a smell of burning plastic and metal and woke us up on Saturday morning at 5 AM due to the odor. The refrigerator was unplugged and the back panel was removed to discover that the starter device to the compressor looked as if it had almost caught fire. The part was burnt and the contacts had welded themselves on to the compressor due to the heat generated. The capacitor contacts also showed signs of soot that plugs into this module but was not damaged. The problem I experienced is very similar to the one listed here: http://www.retrotechnology.com/aux/fridge.html

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite French (Trio) Door Refrigerator with bottom freezer.
Lights stayed on in the refrigerator with doors completely closed causing a burning smell, the light sockets to turn brown as they got too hot, and causing the clear light cover to partially melt falling off. In addition, it heated up items in the refrigerator. The doors were completely closed and the there was no door chime going off to warn if the doors were open, but the doors were closed. Evidently this has happened to me a couple of times before, but the refrigerator was used at a quicker interval, so other than a slight burning smell, and the light cover coming off once, the cover was able to be reinstalled. Previously, I had wondered whether the doors were open or not, but this time, I smelled something burning before I opened the refrigerator, and since I had problems before, I inspected the doors before I opened them and they were completely closed. Upon opening the refrigerator doors, I noticed the light sockets had turned brown from heat, the light cover lying on the shelf, and the liquid items on the shelf were warm. It reminded me of an [REDACTED]....in my refrigerator!!! This is a serious problem that will at some point result in a fire.

Kenmore Refrigerator purchased 2007 from Sears Model 79577306600 Serial 705 MREN00580 This evening I smelled a burning electrical smell in the kitchen. I had last opened the refrigerator 3-4 hours before and noticed nothing. I opened the refrigerator again to find the interior roof of the refrigerator compartment melted! The interoir lighting/control panel had almost completely separated/melted from the housing which was also extremely hot. There had been no recent services or repairs. No problems prior to this. I was very disturbed to find several complaints online of similar issues, some resulting in home fires. There was even a recall of what appears to be the same refrigerators from 2002. I was very lucky to be home when this occured. I believe this would have resulted in a fire had I not unplugged as soon as I had. I would not want this to happen to someone else who might not catch it in time.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refrigerator (Mfr by LG) Model #795.77549600 Serial #603KR00033 Color: Black
I purchased a Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refrigerator in 2006 - LG is the manufacturer. Approx. last year (June) we experienced the interior light had not shut off when the doors were shut. The lamp and bulbs severely overheated, ruining food and melting the lense cover and trim. Assuming that it was human error (i.e. doors not closed completely), I replaced the lense cover and trim. The same problem is now re-occurring. I removed the partially melted (replacement) lense and cover, again, 3 weeks ago. This morning we found the lights on (again) this morning and the interior temperatures were so hot that thawing, raw meat on the top was cooked!!!
I am greatly concerned that this refrigerator is a severe fire hazard and “discovered” on an internet blog that LG and Sears are both aware of the problem and yet a product recall has not been issued. This is a SEVERE life safety concern!!! They have identified that the problem is in the main circuit board and switches. Sears at the very least is issuing a Service Flash Repair (if applicable to your model #) but only if you are a VERY well informed consumer and have researched the internet to find out just how big a problem this is.
Additionally, a class action lawsuit vs LG was filed last year in New Jersey - fyi.

The product, in the report: bottom freezer refrigerator
My refrigerator has had numerous problems but the latest one is dangerous, unexpected, and ridiculous. The light bulbs inside did not shut off, make so much heat that it browned the bulb sockets, created smoke, melted the plastic housing and cooked the frozen chicken on the top shelf.
I am aware of similar models being recalled but when I called the Product Revolution line at Sears that handles the Recalls I was told by the rep, [REDACTED], that this model hasn’t been recalled; its not on the list. I asked for a supervisor and was told one would call be back. That has yet to happen.
I have removed the bulbs but I’m fearful that others electrical problems will ensue. I’m also concenred that another consumer might not catch this in time and may suffer major fire property damage, worse. life damage.

I have a Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator. I have noticed recently that my food was not staying cold. One morning I noticed that the light was still on, but the door was closed. Opening the door, the refrigerator was very hot, and the lights had melted the top of the refrigerator. In trying to remove the lightbulbs, I had burned myself slightly from accidentally touching the plastic, even though I was using a dish towel folded over a few times. I had to use an oven mitt because the lights were so hot, and it almost burned through the oven mitt, which had started smoking after just a couple seconds of contact. I looked online, and saw that this is a very common problem for these refrigerators. I am glad I found the problem before it caught fire -- this is a very dangerous issue.

I have a Kenmore Trio #77309 . While upstairs, I smelled burning, like an electrical fire. I located the source in the downstairs kitchen. It was coming from the Kenmore Trio. I opened the door and realized the top shelf was warm. Then I realized that the plastic housing around the lights had melted. I could not touch the lights, they were too hot. Also, the housing where the bulb screws in had turned brown and melted, making it very difficult to remove the lights. Eventually, using a silicon pot holder I was able to remove the lights. I think that had I not been home, and observant, this could have caused an electrical fire. I have not put the lights back in, because I think it is too dangerous.

My refrigerator light stayed on after doors were closed. The plastic surrounding the lighting bracket warped and failed. The control panel then fell from the top of the refrigerator when the mounting template melted away. About a year ago I had a problem with the lights will not going off in this refrigerator. There was a melting plastic smell coming from the refrigerator. The light housing had melted and the top of the refrigerator had been partially melted. I rechecked the switches and doors and the lights went out again. The bulb sockets were very brown and above them the plastic had also melted.
On 8-16-11 I went to the fridge to get something and closed the doors. When I returned in about 20 minutes, I smelled the burning plastic smell again. I opened the doors and checked the switches. This time depressing both switches would not shut off the lights. I had to remove the lights using a pot holder and was burned several times while getting the lights removed.
I have called the LG recall hotline and they acknowledged that the unit is under recall. I cannot find an official recall for this issue and still believe that it is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Double french door with bottom freezer refridgerator - ivory color
Lights inside fridge would not go out with doors closed completely, which is impossible to know with the doors closed until it causes heat damage. Because of the duration and high heat, the light shield melted and fell inside the fridge. We unplugged the fridge, waited for it cool down, then unscrewed the light bulbs. The sockets were still “live” but at least the bulbs were not there to generate more heat and cause further damage. We were walking out the door to go on vacation and called Sears. Sears told us it was our problem not theirs because it was no longer under warranty. After talking to other repair companies and searching online, this has been a huge problem for many consumers. [REDACTED] has had the same problem and has assisted consumers with the issue, yet Sears will not. Consumers have no way of knowing about this problem going on behind closed doors until it overheats and causes damage. Ironic that there is an overheating issue inside a refrigerator.

Smelled smoke & burning electrical and/or rubber smell. Saw smoke in kitchen. Finally determined that it was coming from the refrigerator. Removed cardboard near the bottom of the back of the refrigerator. No burned wires were evident. Just happened to notice what looked like oil or soot on the white label on the compressor. Reached out to touch it, rubbed some off, determined it was soot, and about that time the compressor switched on and a flame shot out from the side of the compressor. Thank God we found this before it burned down my 118 year old historic home and possibly killed us. This is a hazard that everyone should know about. I had no idea a refrigerator could be this dangerous.

The product, in the report: 3 door refrigerator with freezer on bottom/black
We have a Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator which we purchased in the summer of 2006. Today, we discovered that the light cover had begun to melt on top of the refrigerator. When we removed it, we found that the casing all around it had started to melt and the bulbs were clearly too hot. Some of the food in the refrigerator, including some butter, which had melted, were heated by this. It was very concerning to think that this, had we been out of town at this point, could very easily have caused a fire in our home. After researching a bit online, I see that this is not an unusual problem with these refrigerators and am very concerned that there should be a recall on this item!!

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Trio side by side refrigerator
In 2007 I purchased a Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator, model # 79554600. On August 4, 2011 we smelled burning plastic and something like spoiled food in our kitchen. Upon opening the refrigerator doors (side by side), we noticed the entire light fixture and control panel hanging from the top of the fridge, in melted plastic. The heat from the lights burned a six inch hole in the top of the lining. We were leaving for a one week vacation the next day. Had we not noticed the problem when we did it’s possible the heat from the lights could have started a fire in our wood cabinets. The lights were obviously on for an extended period of time.
We called Sears and they sent a technician to replace the part and the mother board that shorts out. Given that there was a six inch hole burned in our refrigerator because the lights wouldn’t go off he said the unit was not repairable. He also told us that there was a “service flash” issued by the manufacturer on this product, meaning that they recognized that this product was defective and dangerous.
I have also read on numerous web sites that there have been numerous other complaints like ours involving this unit. The technicians that came to our home indicated they have seen numerous cases like ours. This is a safety hazard for which Sears and Kenmore/LG should be held accountable.
We were fortunate this incident happened while we were home.

As I was getting ready to leave for vacation I noticed an odor of burning plastic when I opened my refrigerator. The food on the top shelf was not cold. The light housing was melted and the bulb sockets were discolored and burnt. In fact there are burn marks along the top. My husband attempted to remove the plastic housing and he finally did although the plastic had melted to the top of the frig. The switch that recognizes the door as being closed was not functioning, so the light was not going off. We loosened the bulbs to avoid additional heat. This is definitely a fire hazard! When I returned from vacation, I called Sears service center. They were no help. In fact they told me to go to the store. I took the melted plastic with me to the store and asked if there might be a recall. They knew nothing and could do nothing and suggested I call the service center. I pointed out that this had already been done. They suggested I go to the Sears parts store. I went there carrying the melted part and they were also not much help. They referred me to the same place I called before.
I feel that this is a definite defect of the appliance. So now I have a refrigerator with burn marks, no lights, and I wonder how safe it is even now. Had I gone on vacation without noticing the problem, I feel certain there would have been a fire.

June 28 I smelled burning plastic coming from my refrigerator (Kenmore Elite). I call Sears to come take a look at it. They were not able to come until July 6th. When they finally arrive we were told they knew about this problem but did nothing to contact the consumer, they were just to wait for a service call. When I look at the light that was causing this problem I said something to the service tech about it catching on fire. I was told they haven’t seen this happen, YET! Yet? My house could have burned down, but it hasn’t happened, yet.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator. Freezer on bottom. Two side=by-side doors for refrigerator.
I own a Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator Freezer Model 6DRE1311. Today, I noticed a smell of burning plastic in the kitchen. When I opened the refrigerator, I noticed that the light fixture on the top of the refrigerator had become dislodged. I also noticed that a package of cheese in in the drawer near the lights had melted, as well as a tub of margerine. A can of coke that had been in the refrigerator for several days was hot. As I investigated, I could see that the light bulbs were DANGEROUSLY hot, and that the plastic casing for the light bulbs had begun to melt. Also the interior roof of the refrigerator had begun to melt and bubble. This is a dangerous fire hazard! Normally, to take out the light bulbs, I would unclip the plastic covering, but it had melted into the other piece holding it in place. The only way to get out the light bulbs was by breaking it off.

I have a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Model # 795-77319600. This morning I awoke to find the Master Control panel (on the ceiling of the fridge) hanging, melted, and hot. The lights will not turn off. This is a significant fire hazard. After brief internet searches i was able to find a large number of customers who have had the same problem. Sears expects me to maintain this fire hazard in my home for the next seven days (to wait for a part they are shipping after my call to them). The certified repair company has the part and can resolve the issue today. I am significantly concerned regarding the lack of response, on the part of Sears, in dealing with this well-documented safety hazard. I am also concerned that as an organization they are advising consumers to wait to repair appliances that pose safety risks.
Below, please find just a few links to websites outlining this problem and the experiences of other customers.

The product, in the report: Black Sears Kenmore 3 door refrigerator, model 795.7730 9601, serial number beginning 801. Purchased 03-28-08 and delivered and installed by Sears.
Last night I opened my 3 year old Sears Kenmore 3 door refrigerator (model 795.7730, beginning SN 801) and saw that the 2 lights were out. I reached up to the cover and it was too hot to touch and food nearby was warm. I used oven mitts, and removed the cover and bulbs. I read the owner’s manual on replacing the bulbs and followed those directions, however, the lights did not come back on.
I went to CPSC.gov and read many comments from other owners of a similar product and learned that I was very lucky in finding this problem before it melted the plastic around the sockets. I also saw a mention of Sears Service Flash SF46-515R4 to use when calling Sears for service on this problem. I spoke to [REDACTED] with Sears and she did some research for me and found out that this SF was for models with SN prior to my “801.”
This sounds like a very dangerous trend with this light problem and I wanted to share it with you. I am going ahead with Sears repair to get this fixed, but it does seem like some that Sears needs to own up to.

Lights would not turn off in refrigerator. everything was hot inside. The light cover and housing were melted and bent.
I am enclosing a picture of the melted and bent light cover and melted and bent housing. I have taken out the lights in the refrigerator. The appliance repair man that I was to have repair refrigerator contacted the manufacturer and the relay board which controls the switch and light is on back order. They would not tell him if the boards have been revised due to problems. They also would only give him a 90 day warranty. Since this problem has been erratic -switch doesn’t work correctly off and on getting one which has not been corrected might mean the same problem after the 90 day warranty and I’d be right back in the same situation. He informed me that if the lights weren’t turning off for long enough it might catch fire. I do hope this is enough information and that no one has a house fire due to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite trio refrigerator (freezer on bottom and french doors above)
I opened the refrigerator door this morning and immediately noticed a hot electrical smell, like burning wires and plastic. I told my husband and it took us both a few minutes to realize it was the light inside the unit. The light was apparently on all night, even with the doors shut, and got extremely overheated, melting the plastic casing and emitting noxious plastic fumes. The plastic cover had started to drop down, which was beginning to expose the hot bulbs (there are 2 of them). The food close to the lights was overly warm, including milk, yogurt, sour cream. My husband removed the cover with some difficulty because it was melted and deformed. He then took a towel and unscrewed both light bulbs to make them go out. I have not contacted Sears yet, but will be doing so today. In the meantime, I got on the Internet this morning and found numerous complaints about this same problem, many of them from late in 2010. I even found a warning from the Fire Marshal in Canada about this problem with Kenmore refrigerators. One person noted they were told the cause of this problem is a faulty circuit board that causes overheating. People that had it replaced said the new unit has an overheat switch that shuts the lights off if they get too hot. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON THIS!!! This could be a serious problem -- either a fire hazard or a problem with the noxious plastic fumes. I hope Sears will cover the cost to repair this, as it is ridiculous to expect the consumer to pay to replace this obviously faulty part. We’ve only had our unit for a few years. I don’t know how I’m going to get that smell out of my refrigerator and I’m concerning about those fumes and the food in there. As I said, there are a number of people on line with this same problem, but I don’t know if they are reporting it here or not.

Kenmore Model #106.51582200 refrigerator caught on fire this morning. I was awoken to the sound of popping and zapping sounds and immediately could see and smell smoke in the kitchen. I pulled the fridge out unplugged it and called 911. Fire Dept. determined yes it had caught on fire and have tagged it as an “Unsafe to Use” appliance. My house had to be aired out with fire dept. fans and I was transported to the hospital for cardiac problems. From the looks of it the compressor caught on fire, it burned all the connecting wires and the insulation on the back and bottom of the fridge. Soot on the wall behind the fridge. After doing some research online I have noticed that MANY others are having the same problem with this particular model refrigerator. I purchased this item brand new from Sears in Sept. 2002.
This product needs to be recalled or taken off the market. If I had not been home my home would have burned down!!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model 795.7754* 25 cubic ft, bisque color Upper refrigerator with french style doors Bottom freezer drawer Fresh water dispenser in refrigerator door Automatic ice maker in freezer but no door dispenser
We own a Kenmore Elite Trio Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - Model 795.7754* We have owned it just short of three years. Over the weekend we opened the upper french-style doors and found both refrigerator lights out and smelled an odor of hot electrical burning. We removed the light bulb cover and attempted to remove the bulbs. They were too hot to touch. After they cooled down, we removed the bulbs and observed the compartment that houses the light bulbs. It is beginning to discolor. Furthermore the glass bulbs were darkening and discoloring - but the filaments were still in tact. After cooling, we placed the bulbs back in the sockets to see if they would once again illuminate. They did but after several minutes, they became very hot again and again we smelled the odor of electrical burning. We were able to determine that at least one of the two switches used to determine if the refrigerator doors are open or shut has gone bad - causing the scenario where the refrigerator senses that the door is open and thus keeps the light bulbs illuminated. We have since removed the bulbs to open the circuit and prevent any fire hazard to our home. We did an online search and found many other consumers who have experienced this problem. Today we contacted Sears service center and were told that they knew nothing about the defect in their product. Their only two solutions were to either purchase a one-year service agreement/warranty for a technician to make a service call and repair the refrigerator or schedule a service appointment without the agreement and pay for time and material. Upon expressing our concern that this was a defect in their product and that it posed a fire hazard to our home and our family, we were simply told that they could do nothing about it. The customer service representative couldn’t understand why we didn’t want to purchase a service agreement to remedy their defective product. We are disappointed in Sears approach to resolving this issue and want to make others aware of the potential fire hazard they have in their homes.

The interior light on Model 795.77562600 Kenmore Elite (LG) fails to go off when the door closes. The light creates so much heat it melts the interior plastic light housing. If left for an extended period of time it could cause a fire. Numerous complaints can be found on the internet describing the same issue noted above.

The product, in the report: French door refrigerator (bottom freezer)
On one occasion while opening up either side of the refrigerator the lights are off. The light casing is very hot to the touch, if you wait a certain period of time and open either side of the refrigerator they would then power them self in the on position. He stuck a video camera in the refrigerator and closed the door for approximately five minutes. When he opened the door to retrieve the video camera he noticed that the film showed that the light were powered in the on position with the doors closed. He contacted the firm on 6/22/2011 and was advised that there was not a recall involving his model number. LG has an internal recall involving serial numbers starting up to 704 (same model number) and his is 711. He unscrewed the light bulbs in the refrigerator so that they would not power in the on position with the door being closed. While doing some research online he noticed that other consumers were experiencing the same hazard with similar models of the refrigerator
He has not decided if he will contact a repairmen to make any repairs.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio Fridge Model Number 795.77559600.
I have the Kenmore Elite Trio Fridge Model # 795.77559600 and smelled something burning. I opened the refridgerator to find that the entire lighting unit on the top was charred and had melted from the top of the fridge itself. The entire inside was so hot and the bulbs were too hot to touch even with oven mitts. This could have started a serious fire had we not been home or smelled the burning. This is a problem that needs to be repaired before someone is seriously hurt or even killed.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 3 door Refrigerator Model Number 795.77553600
The light bulb assembly in the upper portion of the Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Model number 795.77553600 did not turn off with the doors closed. The bulbs became extremely hot and melted the entire light fixture and top of the fridge itself. All the food on the top shelf was extremely hot. In order to remove the bulbs, an oven mitt was required. I am certain that this would have caused a house fire if not discovered.
This is an intermittent problem. I plugged the light assembly back in and shut the doors and the bulbs did once again turn off.
Looking online after this occurred I researched this issue online. This is a common problem with the model fridge. Individuals online have also indicated this is an intermittent problem.

Kenmore Refrigerator Fire - Model No. 106.41512100
At approximately 3:00 am my son discovered my kitchen filled with smoke. He woke me and we determined it was coming from underneath the refrigerator. When I pulled off the front grille I could see flames. I pulled the plug and extinguished the flames.
The cause of the fire was the relay assembly mounted on the compressor. A repair person determined that the pins on the compressor were damaged so the refrigerator could not be repaired by simply replacing the relay. The compressor would have to be replaced as well.
If my son had not discovered the smoke this could have been a very tragic incidence.

The product, in the report: Glass shelf from a top freezer refrigerator
While trying to clean my refigerator, the glass shelf (the only piece of glass in the whole fridge) exploded. I let it sit for 10 minutes outside of the fridge before wiping it down with a wet soapy sponge. I know not to use hot water on the parts of my fridge and I know what happens to glass when you change the temperatures quickly, however the glass had a reasonable amount of time to adjust and I only use lukewarm water on all of my refrigerator parts. It exploded with such force that it filled the half of my kitchen that I wasn’t blocking with glass. It seems to me that this part cannot be cleaned in a reasonably safe way, and therefore should not be used in a refigerator.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio 25cu.ft. french door bottom freezer refrigerator
The lights in my fridge stopped turning off when I close the door, causing the light assembly to melt and warp, foods on the top shelf (also top shelf of door items) became hot and strong electrical burning smell was noted. The fridge is a Kenmore Elite Trio french door bottom freezer model, purchased 4.28.07, with no further problems previously. Note, it does not appear to be the switches, but a problematic computer board on the back of the fridge.
When I researched this on the internet, I was surprised how many incidences of this problem I found, specifically about this same model as well as a similar LG model. I discovered this problem late one night before going to bed, due to smelling the burn smell. Makes me wonder how many house fires “due to electrical causes” may be caused by this same thing, since nobody checks to see if the the fridge light goes off when you close your door. Seems like this should be announced as a recall/warning, as nobody is aware of the fire hazard. Sears repaired my fridge today “free” on a non-warrantied item. The repairman made a point of showing me the computer board he was replacing as well as new light assembly, emphasizing “a new safety harness” as a “backup”. Sears is doing the right thing, but more people should be informed in my opinion. Thanks.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator, model number 79577579600. Two refrigerator, side by side with the freezer on the bottom.
I have a Kenmore Elite Refigerator and the door switches that turn the light off keep failing. When they fail the light is left on which heats up the refrigerator. After changing the switches with Sears parts they failed again. This time the problem was not caught for a while and the plastic housing for the light melted and the metal plate above the lights heated up so much that the refrigerator’s housing, which is plastic, started to bubble. If my wife was not home to find the problem, I feel this could have started a fire. There was brwoning of the white plastic from the heat. The heat was intense enough to melt butter, cheese and other items in the refrigerator.
The unit was purchased in 2006 and is model number 79577579600. I have reported the incedent to Sears today and they said they have generated an internal incedent report. Please let me know if you require additional information.

The product, in the report: Kenmore coldspot side by side refrigerator
My Kenmore refrigerator model#10652582201 ser# SM1340817 cought on fire. I could smell a burning smell coming from my kitchen. While I was in the kitchen smoke began pouring out from the bottom of the refrigerator. I quickly pulled it away from the wall and saw flames and smoke coming from the back of the refrigerator. I unplugged it and ran to get my fire extinguisher. When I returned the flames had supsided. once the smoke cleared I removed the back panel to find a large plastic piece with wires on the compressor to be burnt and melted. I began looking online for a parts diagram only to discover this to be a very common problem by reading many reports on web pages. I have also noticed that there is a recall for other refridgerators with the same part. I then called Sears only to be told there is no recall for my model. I am deeply concerned that this will cause the loss of life if it has not already.

Consumer stated that she discovered that the bulb inside the refrigerator was overheating, it melted the plastic housing on the bulb and temperature of the unit became extremely hot. Consumer stated that she had to remove ther bulb in order for the unit to be functional.
Around 4/20/11 she contacted the manufacturer and was informed that a thermostat replacement would be done, however, the problem is not the thermostat because she unplugged the bulb and the refrigerator works. The manufacturer has not responded in sending out anyone for service.
Consumer feels that this bulb within the refrigerator poses a fire hazard and needs to be investigated.
