The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite model 795.77569600 Black, French Door Fridge/Freezer
I smelled a burning smell upon opening my refrigerator last night. I noticed that the top shelf around the light fixture, was very warm. I examined the light unit, and noticed the cover had melted and warped, and the light sockets had turned brown. I had to use heat resistant gloves to remove the light bulbs, and still burned my fingers. I used a camera the next morning, and screwed in one bulb. I closed the door, and the light stayed on. I removed the bulb (less than one minute after installing), and it was burning hot already. I had to throw out 15 yogurts and a gallon of milk, because it nearly boiled them! LG and Kenmore are not issuing a recall, but it is a VERY common issue. I have read numerous reports of people being given the run around for repairs, saying it has been longer than 3 years since purchase, so the $300 repair is on their dime. My attorney says no way. They have recognized this issue with many of the 795 models, and therefore should fix it free of charge, regardless of how many years post purchase one’s refrigerator is.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator Model # 106.51133 210
For a few weeks we have smelled a foul odor when opening either side of our Kenmore Refrigerator. This was not a regular occurrence and seemed to get stronger after the cooling unit had been on. Over the weekend we smelled a strong burning plastic smell but could not pinpoint it. We later went to use the water dispenser on the fridge which was not working. Opening the freezer we found black soot everywhere and charred/melted plastic in the freezer. Fortunately the fire was contained to the fridge and did not spread. The unit has only been in service about 18 months and actually the ice maker where the fire appears to have originated was only in use for about a year as we had the water line disconnected for some time.

The product, in the report: Kenmore refrigerator, made by whirl pool
I have a Kenmore refrigerator, model 795.77579600, serial 609KR00487,mfg 9/2006. The refrigerator has been working fine.about 2 weeks ago, the light in the fridge would not turn off. I was unaware until I smelled burning realizing that the light fixture was burning thru the socket burning a hole in the shell of the casing along with it melting a n bubbling the area where light was.
This could of started a fire in my home.
When I called Sears, and was told there was a recall. I never was notified that the light fixture was of a recall. The sent a tech out and he sent pictures and the service team was only allowing him to replace the light.
The shell inside the fridge now has y hole in it the is not holding the air flow in. I asked them to replace it and they refuse.
T would not be in this situation if I was aware of the recall and had the light fixture change when issue was discovered. They put my family and myself life in jeopardy since this could of easily turned into a potential fire had I not be paying attention or was away from home.
I looked for a recall on this site I do not see anything report by Sears I was only able to Google this and found a few postings of this. The tech that came out said that they had an issue between 2006 and 2010. It does not appear that this issue was ever reported.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Model No. 795-77563600
Bought in Dec 2006 a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Model No. 795-77563600. The only thing thus far that I had a problem with was replacing the ice machine motor. However, on 2/2/2016 I came home to a funny smell. when I opened my frig...OH WOW...the whole light cover was hanging as it had melted around the screws. The light sockets were burnt. Noticed that when doors are shut the light does not go off. Tried to press in the little buttons on each on each side that should turn off light when doors are closed but would not turn light off. After getting the light fixture completely out notice that the top inside of my frig has little bubbles that formed from melting. Everything in the frig had to be thrown away as it was HOT...not warm HOT.

We noticed a bad smell, musky/damp smell, turns out we had mold growth. The refrigerator we purchased 9/2013 was leaking from the back, the 1/4 inch pvc tube angle coupling for the ice dispenser was leaking, lord know how long its been leaking. once we pulled out the refrigerator it was apparent there was a slow drip/leak every time the automatic ice maker was being filled with water. There was water damage to our laminate flooring, we set up a fan the entire day to dry it out.
And today 1/21/15 the interior LED lights do not come on, both on the freezer and cooler side.
Turns out many other customers have this problem sears tech form http://www.searspartsdirect.com)

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator
we have had an ongoing problem with the light unit overheating and melting the top of the inside of the refrigerator as well as the plastic cover. this is the second time this has happened. the first time we tried to notify Kenmore but since it was out of warranty they did not even want to talk to us. we were not trying to get a new one, just letting them know of a potential fire hazard. they told us we would have to purchase a new light unit, which we did. the second one did the exact same thing but now the top is so melted that another one won’t even go back up. the bread on the top shelf was starting to toast, that’s how hot the unit got. The product, in the report: French Door Refrig with bottom Freezer
Smelled something hot in my kitchen area and found that the lights in the refrigerator would not shut off. I double checked to make sure the doors were closed completely but the lights were still on. When I looked in the refrigerator I could see that the light housing cover was melted and the light ballast were discolored. I removed the melted cover and lights from the fridge. I later found that this is a known issue with these refrigerator and part of a class action lawsuit in 2012. I had Sears Repair come to the house and they confirmed this was part of the previously identified problem but they are no longer fixing it as part of the settlement according to his Service Flash on his computer and wanted $500 now to fix it. I should have been covered by Sears SF46-515R4 but he says that it shows on his computer but is grayed out so he can not access it. There is multiple reports of this same problem on the web. I’m glad I was home at the time and it didn’t cause any further damage or spread beyond the refrigerator.

No one hurt Made Nov 23, 2015, sent to the company Jan 15, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 3, 2016
The product, in the report: side by side refrigerator
(11/21/2015) The consumer stated that he smelled smoke when he came home. He heard the refrigerator arcing. The consumer pulled the refrigerator from the wall. When he removed the back of the unit, he saw that the start relay was in flames and smoking. The consumer unplugged the unit. The fire self-extinguished.
On November 21st the consumer came home to a house smelling of an electrical fire in progress.
Not seeing open flames in the house or huge amounts of smoke the consumer elected to not call the fire department and investigate the cause on his own.
During his investigation the consumer found his Kenmore side by side refrigerator (built by Whirlpool) making arcing noises so the consumer pulled it back from the wall so he could remove the back cover and inspect what was going on. Upon removing the back cover from the unit the consumer quickly noted that the start relay assembly was arcing and producing some smoke and a puff of fire just as seen in the two YouTube videos that follow on subsequent pages.
A quick search of the internet also resulted in CONFIRMATION that this EXACT SAME REFRIGERATOR design built during the same timeframe as the consumer’s under the Maytag name has been recalled by the CSPC for the EXACT SAME failure mode of FIRE HAZARD.
Obviously both Whirlpool and Sears were grossly negligent in not expanding this recall to ALL AFFECTED units built by Whirlpool. Whirlpool would have been aware of this issue being the OEM and OWNER of the Maytag line. Whirlpool should have notified Sears / Kenmore of this issue. Furthermore, Sears / Kenmore should have notified all individuals that purchased this product of its inherent fire hazard dangers.
If the consumer would not have come home when he did, this refrigerator could have caught his house on fire. Obviously we would be talking about a massive lawsuit should that have occurred.
My huge issue here is that there was damage to this unit that cannot be repaired by simply replacing the defective start relay. When the relay failed, it also burnt off the hermetic pin terminal of the start winding for the compressor. Therefore, the consumer cannot just replace the relay to repair the unit as the compressor itself will also need to be replaced.
Whirlpool/ Sears needs to repair and or replace this defective unit at no expense to the consumer as it is clear a design issue (subjected to recall) was at fault that caused this unit to not provide a full service life.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator, Model 795.77563600
My Sears Kenmore Elite Refrigerator, model # 795.77563600 is a fire hazard and after reading online this is a widespread issue and one Sears is not standing behind. What happens is the lights inside the unit remain on even when the doors of the refrigerator are closed. They heat up and start to melt the plastic cover, ruin the food, and are even hot enough to melt the insulated protection over the lights. There is a distinct burning smell and even smoke was coming from the light fixture itself when I opened the doors. It is so hot it was a matter of time before I lost all my food and the unit caught fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator
The lights on our Kenmore Elite refrigerator apparently wouldn’t go off when the door was closed which apparently caused them to overheat. This caused the plastic housing and the plastic roof of the refrigerator to start to melt and create a burning smell. Luckily I was home when this happened and I unplugged the unit. We then removed the light housing, plugged the unit back in and it is running fine with no burning smell (but we now have no lights in our refrigerator).
Had I not been home, I fear that the unit would have eventually started a fire and damaged our house but, more importantly, hurting or killing our dog. Also, if this happened in the evening while we were asleep, it could have hurt or killed us.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
The caller is reporting that she smelled a burning plastic smell October 24th, 2015 but couldn’t locate it. She thought that she narrowed it to the refrigerator but couldn’t discover where until October 26th, 201 when her hand was near the light and she felt much hotter than normal heat.
She looked at the light and the plastic around it is concaved, burned with browning all around the socket of the light.
She then noticed that the food near the light had actually been cooking.
There are two light bulbs in this unit however the one on the right is the one overheating and that one has been removed.
The light on the left does not appear to be overheating and does remain in the refrigerator.
There are no injuries being reported
She contacted an appliance repair and scheduled
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them

The product, in the report: Top Mount Refrigerator
(Anyone buying this model and not testing the temperature is at risk!)
I purchased two Kenmore Model 60412 refrigerators from Sears online Store, one for myself and one for my tenet. They delivered and installed them and I set the temperature controls to a little beyond the normal setting for safe measure.
Three weeks later I got food poisoning from a jar of jam, I knew it was from this because my stomach started boiling inside very soon after eating some, and closer observation saw mold. Jam seemed like an unlikely source for food poisoning and as I do not keep food very long this prompted me to investigate.
As I am HVAC-Universal Certified I had all the equipment needed to check the temperatures properly inside the fridge and freezer sections. I was shocked to find the fridge average temperature was 46 F and the freezer 16 F. The high temperatures recorded overnight being 48 F and 28 F. Now I have both refrigerators set at maximum cold position and averages are 40 F and 9 F. The high temperatures recorded overnight being 46 F and 23 F.
As I was just past the 30 day return when I had figured out about the problems I was forced to opt for having Sears attempt to repair them. It took three weeks to get them to the house as the parts showed up one day after the first scheduled appointment. The technician said they seemed to have sent the wrong parts for the problem as they sent defrost controls and not thermostats. He called in and asked about it and they had him install the parts anyway. He also put some silicone on the freezer door of one refrigerator that was also icing up.
As the Sears tech expected it did not address the problem, the refrigerators where still too warm. The silicone that was added to the one door seal shrunk and pulled about 15 inches of the door seal away from the fridge when closed, leaving a gap wide enough for me to slide my fingers through without compressing the seal.
I contacted Sears about this always being very polite, and they tell me it’s improbable that I got two bad refrigerators and kept me on the line for awhile before hanging up on me. I did get another appointment online to fix the door seal the technician destroyed and it will take another two weeks for them to get out and fix the seal problem.
They have no plan to address the temperature problems at this point. I looked at the service paper from the fridge and noticed that it says the expected freezer temperature at 65 F ambient is between 2 F and 8 F, this seems like an admission in writing that the freezer will not hold 0 F.
Looking at the 1 & 2 star reviews on the Sears website I see this is not an uncommon problem for this model. I have figured out that the problem is with the restart function of the thermostat or control board, the fridge stays off way too long to keep food safe.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator (Ice Maker)
Twice in 24 hours, my 9 year old (with special needs) and my 5 year old retrieved ice from the ice maker and shards of plastic came out with the ice. My 9 year old son came and brought the larger pieces of plastic to me. The 5 year old emptied her water and ice out...when I asked her why, she told me that there was something floating in her water. I then took pictures of the ice and plastic because I realized that it was pieces of the ice maker itself that was being broken up and dispensing out with the ice.
I called Sears to check for any product recalls to no avail. They told me they would send a technician out on September 28 to check my problem.
I feel this is a huge safety hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite refrigerator with a bottom freezer, and two doors for the refrigerator.
The interior lights in our Kenmore Elite refrigerator, Model 795.77544600, are continuously on. The plastic cover for the two light bulbs has begun to melt, and the fixtures the light bulbs screw into has begun to scorch from the heat. The food on the top shelf was warm to the touch. The plastic cover was removed, and the bulbs were unscrewed to the point where the bulbs went out. If the interior lights had remained on there no doubt would have been more damage done to the interior ceiling of the refrigerator, the light fixture housing/wiring, and all the food within the refrigerator.
Online there are many examples of this event occurring, but the Sears helpline person (name not available), at 800-479-6351 option 6, could not cite a recall or other company response to previous situations.

The product, in the report: Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator Model #795.79733.900 Serial No. [REDACTED]. circular disk inside the ice bucket
I purchased a Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator Model #795.79733.900 Serial No. [REDACTED] in July 2009. I had been very satisfied with the product until we experienced a problem with the automatic ice maker. A 1.5” piece of clear plastic broke off the circular disk inside the ice bucket. This was discovered when my son found the broken piece at the bottom of his beverage. When I examined the broken piece and the ice bucket it is clear that there are other smaller piece(s) broken but I have not discovered where it/they are currently located. Although we have not experienced physical injuries from this broken item I am concerned that the potential for someone to swallow a piece of plastic is great. Especially considering the plastic in question very closely resembles the color and clarity of ice. I have discontinued use of the ice maker/bucket. Upon talking with a customer service person at the local Sears Home store the only option I was given is to purchase a new ice bucket dispenser for $110.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore refrigerator. Stainless Steel, Model 253.60603410
I purchased a refrigerator from Sears in Nov. 2014 that is still under warranty. Today I was rinsing off the shelves in my kitchen sink. One of them shattered in my hands. The glass fell mostly into the kitchen sink, but some flew 2-3 feet. I had a few minor scratches and found some pieces of glass inside my shirt. I called to report it to the retailer, Sears, and learned that the part wasn’t described as safety glass/tempered glass, but simply as “glass.” When I then examined the other shelves, none of them stated “tempered glass.” Shelves on other refrigerators I’ve owned are labeled as tempered glass. I am concerned that if I replace the shelf under warranty with regular glass it could shatter again and injure myself or others.

A recall on kenmore refrigerator model 795.77312600, serial 705MRWV09753 which Sears never notified us of. The light in the refrigerator compartment did not shut off and this caused it to melted the plastic cover and holder. Sears replaced it with the same part (not a fix to the part) free of charge in 2013. This also happen to a relative with the same refrigerator. Last week the same part started to burn again but we caught it before it caused any damage. We contacted Sears and were told that the part only had a 90 day warranty and that it is our responsibility to pay for the service call and part. This part could cause further damage if not caught immediately. If a part is defective shouldn’t they have to fix the issue before they replace it? If we purchase an after market part instead of a Kenmore part will this cause more problems?

I have a kenmore elite refrigerator. My daughter smelt something burning in the refrigerator. I looked in there and Saw everything under the light bulbs melted. Also the food that was exposed was singed. My medicine that was supposed to be kept refrigerated and out of light was spoiled. As I was checking the food that was exposed to the lights, my hand touched the light bulb and I got burned pretty bad. It was apparent that the lights would not turn off in the fridge. This is a fire hazard and an obvious defect and needs to be fixed before it does start a fire.

The lights inside my Kenmore Elite 3 door Refridgerator did not go off when the door was shut. When I got up in the morning and went to the kitchen, I smelled something burning. I opened the Refridgerator door and the entire light housing unit was burnt and melted. I had to unscrew the bulbs to get them to go off. Everything surrounding the unit was very hot. I got a minor burn on my thumb trying to unscrew the bulbs. I feel this could have started a fire if I had not caught it when I did. I feel there should be a recall on this product. There are many complaints about this problem online.

No one hurt Made Jan 6, 2015, sent to the company Jan 16, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 2, 2015
The product, in the report: Trio door refrigerator
Sears sold a U.S. Consumer Produce Safety Commission-recalled refrigerator/freezer to the consumer after a recall notice (05-213) had been issued and without alerting the consumer to the recall or the potential hazard the unit presented. The unit model and serial numbers are included in the recall notice.
On December 15, 2014, consumer noticed unusual “clicking” and constant compressor sounds coming from the refrigerator/freezer. Upon investigation, consumer noted that the unit was blowing warm air, there was a puddle of water on the floor under the unit and all of the food (frozen and refrigerated) was ruined. Consumer researched the Sears website for repair service information and, while researching, discovered that the unit was recalled by the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) several months BEFORE it was sold to the consumer. The recall addressed a faulty component that presented a fire hazard. Consumer contacted the Sears retailer and was referred to the Sears Recall Office to address the problem. The Sears Recall Office denied knowledge of the recall and refused to assist consumer. Consumer then called multiple Sears corporate offices to seek assistance and in all cases was referred back to the Recall Office who continued to deny knowledge of the recall. Finally, the consumer reached the Sears Customer Solutions office who: 1) acknowledged the recall, 2) ordered and shipped the required parts to address the problem and 3) promised to look into the Recall Office’s failure to acknowledge the recall or assist me. Consumer was instructed to contact Sears repair service, when the parts arrived, to schedule a technician.
Several days later the parts arrived and, later still, a technician arrived to resolve the issue with the unit. Upon opening the parts package, the technician found that Sears had sent a “light harness” instead of whatever was required to correct the issue addressed in the recall. Consumer showed the CPA recall notice to the technician, explained what had happened with the unit and suggested that the light harness was not the problem that caused the unit to fail or address the fire hazard identified in the CPA recall. The technician was not aware of the recall, but did diagnose the problem causing the unit to stop working and replaced a defective Protected Thermal Controller (PTC) switch. The unit began cooling again – but the underlying recall hazard was not addressed.
Consumer contacted the local Sears retail store manager, provided copies of the recall notice, the original sales receipt and a transcript of the events thus far (including the loss of hundreds of dollars in food and having no refrigerator during Christmas week). Consumer also called the Sears District Manager, but could only leave a voice message requesting assistance. The District Manager has not responded to the consumer’s request. The store manager ([REDACTED]) looked into the matter and ultimately told consumer that Sears absolutely denied that the refrigerator/freezer was recalled.
At this point, consumer remained very concerned about the fire hazard and seeks assistance in compelling Sears to address the CPA recall notice.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite French Door refrigerator; freezer on the bottom; stainless steel
The consumer is filing a report on his refrigerator which he feels is not safe and poses a fire hazard.
On 11/26/14 the consumer opened the unit and he smelled a plastic burn odor. He noticed that the thermostat was hanging and the brackets that hold the thermostat had melted. The consumer contacted Sears and advised them of the incident. Sears arranged for a technician to examine the unit on 11/28/14. The repairs were done at no charge to the consumer.
On 11/28/14 (estimated) the technician examined the unit and advised the consumer that the 2 bulbs located on the top inside of the unit failed to turn off causing the brackets to melt. The technician advised the consumer that this problem occurs with 1 in 40 similar units. The technician advised the consumer that a repair kit would be ordered and should arrive within 3 days. The consumer was advised that the unit would be repaired after the parts arrive.
The technician removed the 2 bulbs in the unit and informed the consumer to keep checking the temperature so it does not go above 37 degrees. The consumer states that when the door is opened often the unit’s temperature goes up and he has to manually reset it. The consumer states this occurs at least 3 times a week.
The consumer has not had prior incidents.
The consumer states he has contacted Sears 3-4 times in the past month to try and have the unit repaired but he has been getting the run around. The consumer has been told repeatedly that the repair kit has not arrived and someone from the parts department will call him back when the repair kit arrives.
The consumer is upset that this problem is a common issue and there has not been a recall. The consumer does not feel safe using the unit and would prefer to have it replaced.

The product, in the report: A Kenmore French Door refrigerator. Two doors at top and one on the bottom. Appliance is white and is around 25 CSF.
I purchased a Kenmore French Door Refrigerator almost 2 years ago. The day after it went out of warranty the icemaker broke and parts of the ice tray and foam landed in the ice and was dispensed into the cup when I got ice. I actually drank some of the water without realizing that the plastic was in there until I got it in my mouth. Since the warranty expired the day before, Sears would not replace the icemaker. I purchased a new one at and appliance repair store and put it in myself. It has lasted a little over 6 months and the same thing happened again tonight. I got a mouth full of plastic because you can’t tell it is in the cup since it is about the same color as the ice. This is a very poorly made ice maker that only has a small plastic piece that holds up the sensor to the bottom of the ice tray. I consider that this would cause a major chocking hazard for people and it is a costly repair of approximately $125 two times a year. The model number is 253.70312211.

Kenmore Elite Trio (model 795.77543600 purchased in 2008) interior refrigerator lights will no longer shut off, overheating the light housing. Call to Sears number (800-469-4663) resulted in a ‘not our problem, call LG’ response. Called LG (800-243-0000) resulted in a ‘yes we made it but all records on this refrigerator were transferred to Sears; call them’ response. Given that neither seems concerned and the record indicates many similar problems on this and similar LG models (same light control switches) over the last 6 years, it seems neither Sears nor LG customer service personnel ‘take these issues seriously’ as their incident responses seem to state.

My kenmore fridg M# 795.77546600 had a problem with the light staying on even when the door was closed. Unfortunately you have no idea about this problem until you notice a burning smell. I tried to remove the plastic housing around the light bulbs. and got burnt by the melted plastic. I finally got it off and unscrewed the hot bulbs with a rag.I fear this could burn down a house and injure a sleeping family very easily. The problem should be addressed

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 3 door Refrigerator/freezer serial # 303KR00364
This item is a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Serial #303KR00364 purchased from Sears stores in Fresno Ca. This product is used in my home kitchen. The item does not work properly as the fridge’s fan stops working and allows everything to melt causing water to pool in the kitchen. Yesterday I feel because I didn’t notice a pool of water on the kitchen floor. Sears has sent their extended warranty team twice already to repair the fridge to no avail a it breaks again after a few weeks of them coming to fix it. I purchased the refrigerator July of 2013 and by August 2014 the problem started, so they say I was 2 weeks out of 1 year warranty so they can’t replace it ( I bought their extended warranty). They have been here twice this year already to fix the fridge, this will be their third time since August 2014 to attempt to fix it. This product is dangerous to me and my family as my husband is 72 years old and his falling can have bad consequences. I fell and now my elbow hurts. Please investigate this product. Please

Came home and opened fridge to find light very hot and the fixture melting, terrible smell of burning plastic. After finding out online that there was a product recall I called Sears and our fridge is part of the recall (I’d like to add that we were never informed of this recall even though we had registered and even had the extended warranty). After further online research I am wondering if we shouldn’t insist on a whole new fridge as it seems many people have had this problem repeat itself. What if we are on vacation and this happens again? Or even just gone for a bit too long? Our home could catch on fire! I am very nervous about this now. Scary!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator
For the past week, I’ve noticed a burning smell coming from the refrigerator. It wasn’t until the light fixture melted away from the top of the refrigerator that I realized the amount of heat it was generating. I have had to throw away the warm food. The soda bottles screw off caps actually weree too hot to screw off without using a towel. I’m hoping my disabled daughter with a jeopardized immune system (as well as the rest of the family) does not become ill because of eating food that was warmer than it should have been in the refrigerator. I’m also concerned about fire. Sears is charging me $99 just to send someone out to in 5 days. Researching online has shown that this problem is inherent in Kenmore refrigerators.

The product, in the report: french door bottom freezer refrigerator
The Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refrigerator was plugged in as normal. When I opened the door, it was blazing hot inside. The cover to the light bulbs was melted, and there was a burning smell. My husband removed the cover and the light bulbs were so hot he had to use a towel to remove them. The light bulb sockets were charred and discolored. The food on the top shelf was hot and ruined. I know that the doors to the refrigerator had not been left open because during the night I had gotten a drink of water from the water dispenser and it had worked, which would not have been the case if the door had been left ajar.
This was so dangerous! I am surprised the unit didn’t catch fire!!!! We called Sears and it will be two weeks before they send out a technician. I told them that it was a safety issue and not a warranty issue. They will still not verify that the service call will be free of charge, even though I gave them a service flash number 46-515R4 which I found online where multiple other consumers have had the same safety issue.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Coldspot Refrigerator Model #: 106.59069990 SER#: sk0636230
Kenmore refrigerator caught on fire. Model# 106.59069990 and SER# sk0636230. This is a side by side refrigerator/freezer with ice maker and water dispenser on the freezer side. After plugging the fridge in I heard some noise in the fridge, and assuming it was nothing, walked away. The smoke alarms went off after 5-10 minutes and I rushed to turn off the appliance immediately. When I opened the fridge part smoke was billowing out of the air vent, but no damage in this compartment. I opened the freezer compartment and saw that the door lining was melted away and the insulation was exposed. The top left part of the ice maker was melted into the side of the freezer compartment and there was black soot on the surrounding surfaces.
I was very alarmed that this could happen and the next day I contacted Sears to see what could be one about this issue. To make a long story short, they were very unhelpful. After spending 2 hours being transferred to different departments I still didn’t have any answers.
I found out that the manufacturer of this particular Kenmore refrigerator is Whirlpool, so I called Whirlpool. They said that there was nothing they could do and I would need to go through Sears for this issue. I understand that this is probably how their agreement works, but I had to try anyway.
I must say that prior to contacting Sears I had read many reviews of defective Kenmore products and many people were complaining that there was very little interest by Sears to help resolve the issues. I am also very disappointed with the the horrible customer service I received from them. I expect more from a corporation when a hazardous appliance causes a safety issue. Luckily I had turned off the power before any serious damage was done. This product could very well have caused injury and death, had the problem not been caught in time.
The best advice I got from one of the Sears reps. was to go to a store, where they can’t transfer you around and must deal with the issue at hand. I will be going to complain in person today, and hope there will be a better response to my issue.

My child was getting ice from our ice dispenser. Along with ice, some foam came out of the ice dispenser into his cup. Luckily, he observed this. I also found a broken plastic part that fits into the foam piece in the bottom of my dishwasher. This indicates to me that it must have fell into another family members glass or cup on a previous occasion and was undetected. I have saved the big foam piece and plastic part.
I am concerned that this may happen to other families and that a child or an adult may not notice a foam piece or plastic part that came through the ice dispenser.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator model #795.77553600 Serial #711KR00103. Manufactured date: 11/2007
We have a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator purchased early 2008. Over the last year or so I’ve smelled a burning electrical or plastic smell in the kitchen. I hadn’t been able to detect where the smell was coming from until recently as it is more frequent and worsened. It’s coming from the light fixture in the refrigerator. It’s not turning off for some reason. After a while it seems to reset and be fine. For a day or just a few hours. This is very unsafe especially if it were to start an actual fire or damage food enough to cause food poisoning. We have called sears and they will only send a repair person out at our expense. After doing some research online it seems quite a few people have the same issue and recommended posting this to you, as Sears won’t start a recall

I pulled the melting cover off the refrigerator as the plastic was soft enough to stretch and come free. I then unscrewed the light bulbs to keep them from melting more of the refrigerator.

The product, in the report: Kenmore French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model 253.70319 (black) Similar models 70312 (white) and 70313 (stainless steel)
Product: Kenmore French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model: 253.70319 The fan that moves cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator (possibly the evaporator fan?) stops working for several weeks at a time. Consequently, the temperature in the refrigerator stays around 45-48F, well above the safe zone for cold food storage. From reading online reviews, this is a widespread problem with this fridge (and with similar models 70312 and 70313), caused by a poorly designed evaporator housing that is prone to accumulating frost that causes the fan to bind up and stop working. It’s commonly reported as a failure of the ice maker, because the airflow passes through the ice maker and then into the fridge, and when the fan fails, the ice maker doesn’t get cold enough. But the major safety issue is that when the fan fails, the fridge doesn’t stay cold enough either.

Kenmore Elite 3 Door Refrigerator Model #795-77712700 The lights stay on with the door closed causing them to overheat and the refrigerator temperature gets too high spoiling food on the top and other shelves. The casing around the lights is very hot and I’m worried that it could catch on fire. I saw online that Sears has had this same problem with other models and they actually had a recall. I called Sears and they tell me that my refrigerator only has a 1 year warranty and is not covered under the recall. They will charge me $75 just to come to my home and the repair cost will be in addition to that. Other models that were recalled required the replacement of the motherboard. Who knows what that will cost. There are no instructions in the manual for how to take the light bulbs out the the refrigerator and no one could help me with this when I called. The manual states to call a technician. I am very afraid that my refrigerator will catch on fire. Does anyone know how to get the lightbulbs out? Has anyone had this experience with the refrigerator? The soonest Sears could have a technician at my house is 6 days from now!

The product, in the report: Kenmore refrigerator Model # 795.78409.800; Serial# 804MRNE10879. Exterior is black, has double door refigerator on top with slide out freezer draw on bottom. On the front right door is the ice/water dispenser, with ice maker built into the door.
I have a Kenmore refrigerator Model # 795.78409.800 . The refrigerator was purchased brand new from Sears a few years ago. After one week of owning this refrigerator my mother went to get ice from the dispenser. She dispensed the ice and filled her cup with water. After taking a drink she noticed a silver screw in her cup. It was determined by me the screw came from the inner ice bucket/dispenser. We contacted sears who sent out a service man as the Refrigerator was brand new and under warranty. The service man came out when my elderly parents were home, said the ice maker is working fine, and he didn’t know what they wanted him to do. Upset with the service visit, I ordered a new ice bucket/dispensers through sears parts online and replaced it myself. The new ice bucket/ dispenser has lasted a few years, but on this evening after drinking from the container I heard something rattling. Looking further I observed a silver screw in the bottom of the container. this screw is identical to the other screws in the ice bucket/ dispenser and has white plastic still wrapped in the threads. There is an observable hole were the screw should be located on the ice bucket/ dispenser. I believe this designed is flawed and puts the consumer at risk of injury. I believe the mechanical ice dispenser when activated puts increased pressure on the walls of the ice bucket causing the screw to pop. Gravity allows the screw to fall through with the ice and into a cup. I often eat the ice and it is by luck I did not ingest or sustained injury due to the screw falling into my cup.

This warms the refrigerator compartment above normal and has melted the lights in the past (Oct2008). I purchased my Kenmore Elite Trio in 2003. It has started heating up around the lightbulbs, melting the plastic casing around them, obviously a fire hazard. A simple google search shows this is common problem. Sears will not help me, they keep transferring me, giving me the run around and not answering any questions. I finally had to employ an independent licensed repairman. He looked into it and the parts to fix it ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE! SO, not only do I have a fire hazard for a fridge, I cannot even get it fixed!

The product, in the report: Side by Side French Door Refrigerator
This caller purchased her side by side French door refrigerator around June 2011 and the only problems she has had were pin holes in a hose in the back and that the ice maker works only intermittently. Around February 14th, 2014 she noticed that the refrigerator seemed not to be as cool as it usually felt. She then noticed that her milk was curdled and she had to throw it away as well as other food products that began spoiling as the refrigerator stopped cooling but ice formed on the back wall of the freezer. The caller smelled burning when she opened the refrigerator then noticed a brownish color on the back of the shelving which she identified as burning. She saw tiny sparks coming from the freezer. The caller has turned the refrigerator off but now has no way to refrigerate her spoilables food items.
There have been no injuries to report
Caller has tried to contact the manufacturer twice but was placed on hold then disconnected without assistance. The first time she began speaking with [REDACTED] before being placed on hold then disconnected and the second time she began speaking with [REDACTED] before being placed on hold then disconnected.

The product, in the report: french door refrigerator
(01/09/2014) The consumer stated that when she came home from work there was an acrid burning smell in her home. She localized it to the refrigerator. She opened the refrigerator door and found that the contents in the upper part of the refrigerator were warm. She also found that the clear plastic cover over the refrigerator light had melted. She could feel the heat radiating from the bulb. The plastic around the bulbs were darkened.
The consumer stated that she used a pot holder to try to unscrew the bulb. The bulb was so hot that it burned through the pot holder. The consumer had to use a wrench to remove the bulb. The consumer stated that the bulbs are the original ones that came with the product.
(01/10/2014) The consumer contacted Sears’s hotline for recalls. She was advised that her model was recalled. She was also advised that a part would be ordered and a technician would be dispatched. (01/16/2013) The technician came out and verified that the product was recalled. He ordered the part. The consumer was advised that the part would arrive at her home in 7-10 days. The consumer set up an appointment for 2/1/2014. The consumer stated that the problem is that she registered her product and was not contacted about the recall.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: The part is on back order unknown date of arrival. One technician told me there were so many requests for the part that they were having trouble replacing them.
Food loss and no light in the refrigerator is not my biggest complaint. It is the fact that had the burning light continued to burn, there was a fire hazard (cuted by others on a Sears online complaint forum). This recall should have been made known to consumers since it existed since 2005- a year prior to my purchase. Sears is egregious in negligence!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator Model # 253.5697360
We purchased a Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator in October 2006 from Sears and today, January 3, 2014 we were luckily home when we heard an electrical buzz and pop coming from the kitchen. When we entered the kitchen a large plume of smoke was coming from the back of our refrigerator. We quickly pulled the fridge forward and noticed flames coming from the slats in the bottom left corner and we quickly unplugged the fridge. Additionally, a dark, syrup like liquid had pooled in the corner where the fridge was and was continuing to drip from the spot where the flames erupted. When we called Sears customer service they were completely unconcerned and offered to have a technician come out 2 weeks from today at our expense. Even after I explained the severity of the safety hazard this product posed to me and my family they continued to read from a “script” indicating that they could only offer an appointment 2 weeks from today but offered a service contract for $200 plus dollars. We are thankful that we were home when this happened as our entire home could have gone up in flames had we not been here to unplug the fridge. When I explained to customer service that upon my research I noticed other situations such as this with these same refrigerators they denied ever having that problem despite a news report and video explaining a relay switch malfunctioning in Kenmore, [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] refrigerators.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Refrigerator Model 25378821890
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to inform you of a serious issue which occurred today in my elderly mother’s Sears’ Kenmore Refrigerator/Freezer. She is 82 years old and lives alone.
This morning, she opened the top freezer compartment to obtain some ice. She pushed the metal lever down to make ice. It immediately sparked and then caught on fire with large flames! She thought quickly and pulled out the plug then got her large fire extinguisher and put out the fire. Pictures are attached of the melted ice maker.
All her food is out of the freezer and refrigerator and we are looking for places to store it so it won’t spoil.
She was very upset as you might imagine. This was a very traumatic event for her and us. Her area is all sprayed with white foam and she has a serious mess on her hands and a non-working refrigerator.
I called Sear’s Customer Service and after fifteen minutes there, was transferred to Customer Care (their escalating customer service area). After struggling to repeat everything again, I was informed (after now an hour on the phone), that we could have to pay for a technician to come out ($75.) to let us know if it can be repaired!!!! I would not trust this refrigerator again not to catch fire and next time seriously insures my mother or burn the house down! I asked to be transferred to a “higher dept.” and was told I had reached the top of the customer care ladder. I asked for the legal department and was informed, “We don’t have a legal department.” Oh my.
This refrigerator is over 10 years old and does not have a warranty. However, this fire was due to some serious malfunction and Sear Kenmore should at least offer some help toward the purchase of a new refrigerator for my mother.
The model is: 25378821890 and serial #: BA81113053. Pictures are attached.
Can you tell me if this is the first instance of this kind of spontaneous fire and if there is any relief for us or avenue to pursue?
Thank you./[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
Last night our entire kitchen filled up with smoke and smelled like burning plastic. We could not figure out where it was coming from. After unplugging each appliance and then plugging them back in 1 at a time, we determined it was the refrigerator. After taking off the back panel and plugging it back it, we could see fire and smoke coming from the bottom left corner, where the compressor was located. We were lucky we were home and NOT sleeping. I can’t even imagine how this would have ended otherwise. I am writing you so that other families do not have to go through this, or something even worse! This product is a danger. I have read the article that Whirlpool thinks the fire would stay contained within the refrigerator and not pose danger to human life. They are WRONG! I have not doubt that had we been sleeping or not at home, the drywall behind the refrigerator would have eventually caught on fire. Not to mention the amount of smoke that was coming from the back of the refrigerator was dangerous itself. I have asthma and the amount of smoke in our kitchen which was starting to travel to the rest of our house, was enough to pose danger. Shame on Whirlpool for not having a recall on these refrigerators and only the MAYTAG brand! And knowingly allow customers to go through this!

Glass fell on the staff member’s arms, hands, chest, hair and feet. She suffered minor cuts on her right hand and right third toe.
Staff member went to the bathroom to wash off the glass on her arms and hands, and put antibiotic ointment and bandaids on wounds.

The consumer says that he and his family were on vacation. When they came back they came in to find a very foul smell in the home. They could tell that it was coming from the refrigerator. He opened the refrigerator door when a wave of the smell encompassed him, also food contents were destroyed as the room was room temperature.
The front of the refrigerator door is a control panel with a stylist that allows kids to draw pictures. He thinks that his five year old daughter hit the two buttons on the panel next to a label that said “cooling off, hold 3 seconds”. The consumer says he contacted the retailer/manufacturer who offered $240 to have technician come out and repair it. The consumer said he simply pressed the two buttons together and held them for three seconds, when the unit turned on again.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore “top-freezer” refrigerator
I installed a new Sears Kenmore “top-freezer” refrigerator on August 7,2013. I was happy with the functionality and quality of the unit, but yesterday, my wife and I independently discovered an unexpected risk. When stooping to place or remove items form the refrigerator, the freezer handle, which is hard plastic with sharp edges, protruding three inches, is often struck by the back of your head as you stand up. This is enough to draw blood! This risk is not obvious because the two handles meet smoothly and stylishly when both are closed. I think the risk is enough to warrant a recall or handle redesign and replacement. Pictures are attached.

We have a Kenmore fridge model 795.77543600. Last night before going to bed my wife walked by fridge and smelt something burning. She opened the door and saw that the light assembly was melting. It appears from comments that their is a known problem with this model and the lights not turning off. All the food on the top shelf was ruined. We were lucky she walked by the fridge or who knows what could have happen. I contacted Sears and was told I would need to pay for repairs since its no longer under warrenty. This issue should be covered knowing that there is a dangerous defect.

The product, in the report: Trio French door refrigerator
Kenmore Trio Refrigerator Model Number 795.77309600 purchased in 2009 - noticed smell of burning electrical from inside of frig last evening. After a few hours, the smell was worse and I noticed the two bulbs were burning EXTREMELY bright and the housing around the lights had MELTED off (screws became so hot, they melted the plastic holders they were in). The food on the top shelf was WARM to the touch. A review of the web site http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/kenmore_refrigerators.html?page=9 revealed numerous other complaints about the same situation, but no reports/recalls that I could find on the CPSC site. This is most definitely a FIRE HAZARD and should be recalled & replaced by the manufacturer at no charge to the consumer.

The product, in the report: White, freezer top refrigerator.
The freezer unit of my Kenmore refrigerator Model #253-64814400; Serial #BA51103917 caught fire on 6/26/2013. It was manufactured in March of 2005. We smelled smoke and an acidic odor and opened the freezer door. The roof over the vent area was melted and the entire freezer unit was covered with black smoke. The refrigerator unit below was filled with a lighter colored smoke.
The fire department inspected the wall plug, wiring and fuse box and found no discrepancies.
