The product, in the report: 2007 Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator
I own a 2007 Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator; bought in 2007. model #is...77544. On May 30th 2013 my husband opened the door and felt alot of heat. The light sockets were burnt and blackened, the plastic light cover was melted and the bulbs were so hot he had to use a towel to get them out and a burning smell. The light does not go off when door is shot.
Consumer talked to asst manager [REDACTED] at Sears in the Schuylkill Mall in Frackville, on June 3rd...He was excellent and immediately sent all the info to the Chicago office...[REDACTED] from Sears Executive office in Texas called on the 4th and sent the technician that day...There was no charge...
Replace parts were an N ciruit box...also a thermal switch...and lower watt bulbs and replacement cover...The tech. was excellent...
Sears is fixing the problem only after it occurs...so they are fully aware of the situation. Consumer’s concern is for the families that don’t know this might happen...
Thank you. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator model #795.77306600
The light in the refrigerator was staying on even when the doors were shut. This caused the light bulbs to overheat and melt the plastic casing below the bulbs where the temperature control system is located. There was a burning smell and smoke as well.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
My Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator has had repeated instances of the inside lights staying on when the doors are closed. This causes the lights to overheat and begin melting the plastic shield over the bulbs as well as ruining food nearby. We have tried removing the light bulbs and reinstalling them after running the refrigerator without them for a period of time. The problem has recurred multiple times, and I have found numerous reports on various websites regarding similar problems. I am concerned about the fire hazard potential from the electronic parts overheating, plus of course burn potential from touching overheating lights and loss of food due to spoilage.

I opened my Kenmore Trio refrigerator model 795.77556600 and found a smokey smell inside and that the plastic case under the light bulbs had melted and fallen down, the bulbs were so hot he had to get a towel to hold them in order to take them out as they would not go off. The bulb sockets were very brown and above them the plastic had also melted.
if this was over night it most likely would have caused a fire!!!!
i researched many web sites only to find TONS of customers with the exact same issue, with the exact same unit, purchased around the exact same time i did. 2006.
sears said there are no recalls listed and will not offer to replace the faulty circuit board that is causing the problem. the cost to repair this unit is $500 plus $65 service call. this is TOTALLY unacceptable since this is nothing that i caused and is an internal issue...and as i stated hundreds of others having the exact same problem.
i will be reporting this to the BBB as well.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 25 cu. ft. Trio
When I came home and went to my refrigerator (Kenmore Elite) I found it not working, bottom freezer was working but refrigerator section not. When I opened it and it was so hot inside it that the plastic cover for the light was melted. When I called a local appliance repair company they informed me that they have seen this before and that I could try to go to Sears about it but with the experience other customers has had is that Sears will not do anything about it. I am concerned about fire hazard. What if I went away for a week and didn’t find this & it started a fire at my home would Sears stand up to the plate then??

The product, in the report: stainless steel Side by Side Refrigerator
The consumer says she was drinking a beverage when she felt glass in her mouth. She checked the ice machine and saw tiny pieces of glass mixed with the ice. She contacted a technician who said he had never heard of it. She asked where is glass located in the unit.
The technician said there is glass by the compressor or that if exploded, could find its way into the ice maker. She talked to a national consumer agency who offered to send out a technician for a fee.

The product, in the report: French Door Refrigerator
My refrigerator interior lights stayed on all night even though the doors were closed. They generated so much heat the area around the bulbs turned brown and the light assembly came loose from the mounting brackets. If I had not discovered this problem I think it would have resulted in a fire. I have removed the bulbs and the interior temperature has returned to normal.
My investigation on-line indicates there have been several reports of this same problem with this particular refrigerator. To date it appears the manufacturer has taken little or no responsibility for this problem.

The product, in the report: Top Mount Refrigerator
The consumer says she took out a glass shelf to clean. She had it sitting on the counter while rinsing with cold water when the glass suddenly exploded. She was not injured.
The consumer says there was nothing left of the glass as it exploded into many tiny pieces. She says she could have been seriously injured.
The consumer says she felt very fine glass particles in her fingers for weeks after the incident. She has contacted the manufacturer who sent out a technician and they plan to replace the shelf. The consumer says she will contact the manufacturer and request that the glass be tempered glass.
UPDATE: On March 18, 2013, I spoke to Sears Customer Service. As per conversation with the rep, “Sears only has a Kenmore label on refrigerator. Frigidaire manufactures it. Call them to get tempereed glass shelves.”
On March 18, 2012, I also spoke to Frigidaire. Their refrigerators are made with tempered glass. Sears signed a contract with Frigidaire to make Kenmore refrigerators to their specs. They referred me back to Sears to get issue resolved.
Sears claims they cannot get tempered glass. They only replace shelves with clear glass.
Neither Sears nor Frigidaire will accept responsibility for the poor quality glass. Sears should sign a contract with Frigidaire to use tempered glass. Sears should sign a contract with Frigidaire to use tempered glass in their products under the Kenmore name.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Coldspot
I awoke last night at 1:30 am to a smoke filled kitchen and smell of burning plastic. Immediately called Hanover, Ma. Fire Deptartment and evacuated house with family in sub freezing temperature. Captain [REDACTED] established that the cause was my Kenmore Coldspot refrigerator I had purchased at Sears. I googled this later in the day and found that there have been a series of complaints about the relay switch to the compressor which catches on fire. I can’t believe that I have a product like this in my home, putting my family and property in great peril. All these complainants stated that they were treated callously by Sears about this matter. I further notice that [REDACTED], another company, had a safety recall on this switch but Sears has not. I no longer feel comfortable with this appliance in my home but feel Sears should be held accountable. This could have resulted in great property damage and possibly even death. I look forward to a reply to give me direction in getting my concerns addressed. Thank you in advance for your attention in this matter.....[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite side-by-side (refridgerator) with bottom drawer freezer. Black. Model 795.77559600
We came home to find the temperature in our fridge way out of normal- almost 60 deg, when it was set at 40; we have a small thermometer inside the fridge to check that its at the correct temperature. My husband felt the light housing and it was extremely hot. We thought at first someone had just left the door ajar, even though the door alarm wasn’t sounding. We shut both doors and waited a few hours- the temperature did not return to normal. We finally got smart- and stuck our camera phone inside the fridge and found that even when the doors shut, the light did not turn off. The heating of the lightbulbs was increasing the temperature inside the fridge over 20deg!!! Our food had to be thrown out and my husband removed the entire light housing. For now, the fridge works without the lights and cools to temperature- but sometimes we have to use a flashlight to see inside the fridge. Luckily, we caught the problem before it caused a fire hazard or burned up the fridge.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Trio model number 77552600 year 2006
Kenmore Trio Refridgerator purchased from Sears in 2006 model number 77552600. The overhead light in the fridge did not turn off when the doors were closed. Which caused the fridge to overheat, melting the light cover and blackening the wires and light bulb casings. I am positive had I not discovered this in a timely fashion it would have resulted in a fire. Every item on my top shelf of the fridge had melted and the entire fridge was like a blast furnace when I opened the door. The wiring and bulbs had started to turn black and were well on their way to causing a fire. No one will take responsibility for the fridge. I purchased the fridge from Sears and the fridge is marked a Kenmore but Sears says the fridge was manufactured by LG and so they refer to LG for any type of property damage. LG states they will only give you 250.00 towards food even with reciepts showing a larger food loss. In addition parts to repair the fridge (though who would ever want to repair it, or trust it again) are on backorder for 4 months. I also had a 5 year extended warranty from Sears on the fridge that had just expired. Sears and LG are just playing hot potato with a fridge that should be recalled before it causes a loss of life or greater property damage.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator overheated and light bulbs exploded when our 6 year old opened the door!
On Christmas Eve 2012…..Our Kenmore Trio Refrigerator started a near fire in our home! The lights inside the fridge got so hot they started to smoke and melt all the plastic surrounding the unit....even with the doors closed. If I had not been home from work our house would have burned down for sure! The fridge got so hot it was like opening an oven and it was SMOKING and smoldering and melted all the plastic in the light fixture! The technician is here now saying this happens in 1 out of every 10 refrigerators of this model! I do not like those odds!!! That is a 10% chance of your house catching on fire!!!!! Why isn’t Sears being pro-active on this! No one notified us of this problem and I registered this product when we bought it! Isn’t that the purpose of ‘registering’ a product…so that you are notified of any recalls????? Our fridge was smoking and hot as could be! The smoke was coming out and one of the light bulbs exploded in the fridge as a result of the high temperature …ruining all our marinating steaks and casseroles for our holiday party. We quickly cut the power to the fridge but a lot of food was ruined with broken glass and heat. The technician says that Sears will replace the unit for free….but I don’t want this fridge in our house anymore! I don’t trust it! If Sears knows this is a problem in 1 out of 10 fridges why aren’t they being responsible???? Someone is surely going to die from a house fire due to this refrigerator! It is just a matter of time! We have two young children and I cannot sleep through the night with this refrigerator plugged in!

About 6 months ago our Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator 795.77253601 interior light bulbs remained on all day with the doors securely closed. Light fixture melted and interior roof bubbled, contents inside warm. I removed fixtured, ordered replacement light fixture and light door switches, replaced all. It worked fine for about 3 months then it occured again but we caught it before the complete melt down. Now just removed the bulbs. I changed the light switches again but that did not correct the issue.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite french door refrigerator with freezer drawer, model 795.77573600, serial no. 605KR02646.
I have a Kenmore Elite french door refrigerator with freezer drawer, model 795.7757360, Serial No. 605KR02646. I noticed a burning plastic/melting smell inside the refrigerator compartment. The clear plastic cover on the refrigerator light had melted, deformed and fallen away. The two light sockets were discolored brownish. It was clear the interior lights in the fridge had been staying on while the door was closed. Light could be seen around the door seals when the doors were closed. Activating the door switches manually indeed did not turn off the lights. Unplugging and replugging the fridge did not resolve the issue.
Safety hazard 1: Fire hazard. It is clear the fixture is not safely designed for standard appliance bulbs. Under normal operation, this is not an issue, as the lights are lit for only a minute or two at a time, and then the refrigerator itself cools everything down. However, with the light stuck on, the fixture began to melt even inside a closed, operating refrigerator, and could have started a fire or ignited paper wrappings or other materials stored on the top shelf.
Safety hazard 2: Food safety hazard. The incandescent appliance bulbs were constantly generating heat inside the refrigerated storage compartment, raising the storage temperature of products near the light. The neck of a beer bottle near the lights was warm to the touch. creating potential food safety issues.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite trio refrigerator, black, model 795.77569600
Our French Door Refrigerator by LG/Kenmoore has a defective circuit where the light would stay ON even when the door is closed causing the light fixture to overheat. The overheating is very high to melt the plastic enclosure as well as burn the light bulb housing/socket. The heat radiation also melted the surrounding area of the light. The fixture melted and continues to heat up that caused burn to my wife and me. Due to high heat, it burns the light socket that’s very likely to be a fire hazard. Manually pushed in the door switch and the lights stay lit to prove that it’s internally defective. Besides that it spoils a lot of our food, it would create a high risk for the unaware public to consume spoiled food/drink due to the failure of the refrigerator to stay cold and actually became a warmer. We have two kids and the milk storage is near this light. It got hot inside enough to melt the butter and cheese on the door storage. It also melted a mustard plastic dispenser that’s 6 inches away from the light. Searching the web, I found that there was a class action settlement to replace the light but not enough to resolve the root cause of the defect. A recall will force LG to resolve the root cause of the defect and minimize the risk of burning the user or as a fire hazard. Besides that I was never notified nor informed of the settlement, there’s no any form of communication to me related to this defective circuit. The recall also would force Sears and LG to inform the consumers on record of the defect and take necessary prevention from being injured or damage to property. I have taken a lot of pictures of the incidence as well as the parts that were burned so if needed, I could provide it. Brand-Sears Kenmore Elite (French style) , Model 795.77569600, MFG Date 2006.10, P/No 3850JD8061E. Also, searching the web, there was a previous recall related to the energy conserving and that too, Sears and LG failed to inform me of the recall. I’m the original owner and purchased it as brand new from Sears. It was also purchased and delivered to the same address right now so there was no change of location. Please let me know if you want me to send the pictures of the burned parts of the refrigerator as well as our skin burn due to this melting light fixture. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite French Door Refrigerator Ice and water thru the door
I own a Kenmore Elite French Door Refrigerator. Late in the evening on 10/28/2012. My husband noticed a smell of plastic burning. Upon investigation he detected it was coming from the refrigerator. When he opened the door he noticed the lights were on and the fixture was so hot, it melted the sockets and the plastic cover. It was hot enough inside it heated the food located on the top shelf of the fridge. Had he not noticed before we retired for the evening, this could have resulted in a fire. Luckily there was no fire. He unplugged the appliance. The food on the top shelf was ruined. We tried to save as much as we could move to a smaller refrigerator/freezer, but could not save everything.

Lights inside the refrigerator no longer go off when the door is closed. The heat from the bulbs melted the plastic housing around the bulbs and the bulb sockets are scorched black. Luckily we noticed the problem this morning before leaving for the day and removed the bulbs so the heat/melting problem is eliminated. This is a definite fire hazard as had the melting continued the wiring could have melted causing an electrical fire. Burned my hands a couple times on the housing while removing the bulbs.

The product, in the report: Kenmore French Door Bottom Freezer refrigerator- Black - Digital temperature control - auto ice maker - glass shelves
The light in the temperature control unit located on the roof/top of the cooler unit did not go off. The resulting heat from the bulbs melted the plastic tabs that holds the screw that holds the unit to the top. It is now hanging down, numerous tabs for the entire temperature control unit has been deformed by the heat, the roof of the cooler unit itself has bubbles and the beginnings of melted drippings. The control unit is now being held up by duct tape. I see this as an absolute fire hazard. There needs to be a national recall on this model and others with the same problem. I have noticed several postings of the same problem but with different model numbers about lights not going off in Kenmore Bottom Freezer Refrigerators.

The product, in the report: Kenmore bottom freezer model #795.7730; Manufacture date is 03/2007; It was purchased from Sears in Spokane, WA around 06/2007
Our refrigerator (a Kenmore bottom freezer model #795.7730) was working well until a burning smell was noticed from the refrigerator compartment. When opening the door, it was clear that the incandescent bulbs inside the compartment had melted the bulb housing. The bulb housing is made of plastic and had gotten hot enough that it had fallen from its mounting screws and was lying on the food on the top shelf. It appears that the light bulbs had remained in the on position despite the doors being closed. We are extremely fortunate that we were home at the time. This clearly is a fire risk. Kenmore/Sears should be notifying consumers so that the issue can be corrected--at no expense to the consumer.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Refrigerator. Standard Freezer on Top of Fridge, basic model. Purchased in 2002 from Sears.
Our freezer caught on fire. I opened the freezer on the top of my fridge to find the inside completely covered in soot. A fire had occurred inside the freezer. I unplugged it immediately. We called Sears repair services to assess the damage and see if it was repairable--just in case the fire were from something (paper/label/etc.) getting caught in a motor or something. The repairman was shocked. Never saw anything like it before. What he wrote on the report was: Melted bi-metal caught on fire. Melted inside of freezer. The thermostat apparently burned. The entire inside of the freezer is melted/burned. I am SO thankful that the fire stayed inside the freezer! Had it come out the back or front we could have lost our house or lives. We were lucky! The fridge/freezer is in an open space and was being used properly.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio 25’ stainless steel refrigerator, model 795.7553600, serial number 702KR00613, manufactured February 2007 by LG
I own a Kenmore Elite refrigerator, model 795.77553600, manufactured in February 2007 by LG.
IT IS A FIRE HAZARD!
The PCB has gone bad and the refrigerator light stays on even when the door is closed. When I discovered this, the light housing was melted and partially detached from melting, the two light sockets were partially blackened, and the items on the top shelf were extremely hot.
I searched the web and found there have been dozens of complaints about this on various appliance repair websites.
I repeat, my Kenmore Elite refrigerator is a fire hazard, and it’s only a matter of time until one causes a house fire.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
The consumer stated that approximately 3 weeks ago, the light bulbs in the refrigerator overheated and melted the plastic brackets for the control panel. This incident blackened the light sockets. The bulbs was removed to prevent a fire. No switch to turn off the lights that stayed on. Faulty circuitry.
9/2012 The service department was contacted and she was advised that there was a safety alert on the refrigerator, however, when she contacted the retailer they told her there was no recall on her model. She could purchase a service agreement for $300.00. They then offered her $500 towards a purchase of a new one which would only be $200.00 because she had purchased the agreement. After 3 weeks she was told no parts to repair.
The caller feels that this refrigerator is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

Tried to buy a new one that they could send out ASAP and they said it would be 2 weeks.

The bottom, glass shelf to our Kenmore (model 106.64252401, Serial # ES2720356) exploded into thousands of pieces as it was being dried. My wife had removed it from the refrigerator, washed and rinsed it in warm (not hot) water and was drying it when it burst apart yesterday. The sink was filled with shards of glass, the counters and floor had glass pieces all over them; some pieces were 20 feet away having traveled over wall-to-wall carpet for the last 10 of those feet. Fortunately, my wife had only a small cut on her hand and her glasses protected her eyes. I can send pictures if you are interested.

The product, in the report: Kenmore refrigerator with French doors, bottom freezer Model 795.7731 Manufactured August 2007 Purchased at Sears
In October 2007, I purchased a Kenmore refrigerator model 795.7731 from Sears for $1,400. This is the model with French doors on top, freezer on the bottom.
On August 14, 2012, I discovered the 2 light bulbs inside my refrigerator remained on when the refrigerator door was closed. I then felt the refrigator light cover and it was hot and food under it was unusually warm. I tried to remove the light cover, so that I could remove the bulbs. However, the light cover would not come off. To avoid a fire, I shut off the electric power to the refrigerator and removed all of the food in the freezer and refrigerator.
I called the Sears service line and they said they would send a repair person to my home. The quote they gave me was $279 for service, parts and a 1-year warranty. The service rep asked for my credit card and my account was immediately billed for that amount. Service is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17.
I am very disappointed because this refrigerator is less than 5 years old. I am also fearful this problem will occur again, posing a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore Trio Refrigerator with French doors and bottom freezer.
The product is a Kenmore Refrigerator model # 795.77302600. The lighting element stays on even when the doors are closed. This has happened twice to me so far and also to hundreds of people as well when I looked this model up online. The lighting element has melted the top portion of my refrigerators insulation and the plastic case that it is enclosed in. This was the case in many other homes as well. If I did not catch it in time, both times, there would guaranteed of been a fire. Kenmore has only issued a recall on the lighting element and does not care that your refrigerator was damaged due to the manufacturers defect. This should be a major Fire Hazard Recall from Kenmore. I was suprised when they told me theres nothing they can do about the damage. That I should be happy that at least there replacing it and installing it free of charge. Like that was going to make me sleep better at night. Kenmore should admit that this is a major Fire Hazard Recall before someone loses a house or a life due to a fire. This appliance needs to be reported as unsafe and replaced by Kenmore in all homes. Many of these big corporate appliance companies, that many families have in there homes with major manufacturer defects like this one, should be held accountable. The consumers are the ones who have to suffer with the disservice of these companies especially Kenmore. They are there worst at customer service and I know I will never by another product from Kenmore again.

Kenmore Refrigerator model 106.53559202:
While in the kitchen, I heard crackling and popping sounds coming from underneath the refrigerator. I soon noticed a bad smell and started seeing smoke come from behind the fridge. I immediately turned the unit off; thankfully I happened to be standing right there when it happened. To further troubleshoot, I took the bottom panel off the back so I could see if it was possible to determine what was wrong (thinking potentially the evaporator fan motor). I turned the refrigerator on one more time and the fan worked, but within about 3 seconds there was the orange glow of fire from under the compressor. Fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher without further incident (except for a lot more smoke!). I have a new fridge ordered.

We have a kenmore refrigerator, model number 795.77319600. The lights will staay on whenever they please. We have to unplug the refrigerator to reset the lights. The top light cover has completely melted off the screws, big chunks of the center plastic is now missing, and it hangs now from just the wires. The plastic around hte bulb is even black half way around. We have lost multiple food products from this. Every time it happens all butter and cheese is melted and other foods are warmed. Now all the shelves have been breaking VERY easy. We can only assume this is because of the heat making the plastic not as strong as it used to. I can not believe there is not a recall on this yet! We have only had the fridge for approx 5 years. We can not afford to buy a new fridge at the time, we are a family of 7, and so we are stuck living with this food wasting fire hazard!!! Kenmore needs to STEP UP and help their consumers!

The product, in the report: Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator. Model number 106.50522101 Color: white. Internal ice-maker on left side. Standard full-size household refrigerator.
In the early morning hours of June 21, 2012, the inside of our Kenmore refrigerator model number 106.50522101 and serial number SM1231180 spontaneously caught fire. Fortunately the home was spared any obvious damage, as the fire was contained within the freezer compartment of the unit. My wife and I woke to a plastic burning smell and soon discovered that it had been the inside of the freezer portion of the refrigerator. All our food was obviously ruined, and we were concerned for the health of ourselves and our infant due to the toxic fumes released from the burning plastic. We immediately opened all windows and and turned on all fans in an effort to get the burnt plastic fumes out of the home. I have attempted to work through the “customer solutions” department already, however due to my inability to produce the receipt for this refrigerator (purchased in or around 2002 and transferred to us when we purchased the home 4 years ago), they claim to be unable to assist with this matter.
This is a major safety hazard and could easily have resulted in loss of our home or even the loss of life. Whether the unit is still under warranty or not, this is obviously not an acceptable risk and certainly raises fears about the other appliances in our home that are made by the Sears company as well. The unit was apparently manufactured by Whirlpool, however they have been unresponsive to contact as well.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Refrigerator
The lights in the top refrigerator section would not turn off. I checked to ensure the doors were closed securely, but the double lights would remain on. After noticing the butter in the fridge was melting, I decided to remove the light bulbs, which have not been replaced since the refrigerator was purchased. When I tried to remove the plastic cover it just fell from the metal bracket it was attached to. The plastic cover was melting and was losing its form. After removing the light bulbs, I notice that light fixtures that were white in color were now turning black.
It is my view, that if I would not have removed the light bulbs when I did, the refrigerator would have become a fire hazard or caught fire. A service call to Sears has been placed to remediate the problem.

My refrigerator smelled like burning plastic. Items on the top shelf were hot to the touch. The light bulbs were extremely hot. We removed the bulbs and one socket was scorched. In researching online we found that this was a known hazard and had resulted in fires in some cases.

The product, in the report: Product is a Kenmore Elite Fridge Model # 795.7755960 serial # 608kr00219 MFG 8/2006
I have a Kenmore Elite Trio Fridge that has had a problem with the interior light staying on and causing a melting and burning smell. It has caused the plastic casing that the bulbs sit in to melt and I”m unable to pry it open. I was told by Sears that there is no recall and I was required to buy ($296) a service contract to cover the cost of the repair. I have seen that there are a great many complaints about the same problem by others. Does our house have to burn down before something is done? There is a class action but I dont qualify as my repair is done after the date specified in the class action. What recourse do I have?

The product, in the report: Refrigerator French Trio
I own a Kenmore Trio refrigerator model number: 795.77546600. I purchased the refrigerator in 2006. Last week the light housing inside the refrigerator part melted and burnt the light bulb medal housing. I have found out this is a common problem with this refrigerator, the light bulbs do not turn off when the doors are close. Sears refuses to do anything about it and is requiring service fees to fix it. Sears stated there is no recall for this particular problem.
All of our food was ruined.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite stainless French door model 795-77553600 refrigerator
On 11 Apr 12 at approx. 1200p.m. Noticed an unusual bad odor coming from refrigerator. Upon further investigation, found lights in kenmore elite model# 795-77553600 stay on when doors are closed and switches engaged creating a possible fire hazard. Light fixture housing and lens melted as did some food packaging causing some spoilage of food products. Also found light sockets brown and charred. Had to use towel to remove lights. The noxious fumes from the melting plastic alone can pose a serious safety hazard. Currently awaiting Sears technician for repair under recall. I was not notified of any recall on item listed until speaking with the sears safety recall office. This was of course after speaking with sears repair services personnel whom made no mention whatsoever of said recall even after being asked directly. Had we been asleep or if no one had been home (i.e. work, vacation) to rectify this problem in a timely manner, I believe the results would have been catastrophic.

Luckily we were at home when we smelled burning plastic. We opened the refrigerator and the plastic lense cover over the light bulbs was melted. We toke the light bulbs out and the sockets were black. We called Sears but they said it was no longer under warranty. Then we said that we had read that there was a recall on this problem and the lady at Sears said it wasn’t on this model. She then said she could have someone come out to fix it but we didn’t want to pay for something that should be done under a recall. So as of now we have no lights in the refrigerator.

Issue: Refrigerator lighting heated to the point of discoloring the two (2) bulb receptacles, melted the plastic lighting cover, bubbled the interior finish, and melted Styrofoam container on the top-shelf of unit; I have images, is there a way to upload?
On the incident date, I removed the lighting unit and cover to prevent fire and further damage to the units’ interior finish. Testing of the door/switch at the time of the incident seemed to indicate, that the light did extinguish when the doors closed.
An internet search revealed many such incidents, one recommending submitting the issue to your site. I will follow-up with a similar report to Sears.

The product, in the report: Kenore Elite/LG Model # 795.77543600 refigerator
I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator, I think LG is the manufacturer. The model number 795.77543600. The unit is 4 years old and the light kit is overheating. I’ve read multiple postings about this issue and it appears to be relatively well known problem. The light kit is extremely hot to the touch and I’ve been advised to remove the light bulbs until the technician comes to replace the unit in 19 days. Sears has scheduled a replacement, but i’ve read that a repaired unit is prone to overheat to the point that the plastic casing melts. Very surprised these units haven’t been scheduled for recall. It’s one thing to have the water dispenser break or the ice cube maker to stop making cubes, I get that stuff happens. But to have a fire hazard in the middle of my kitchen is unacceptable. I’m not alone, you can google this issue and find others, something needs to be done about it.

I purchased Kenmore Elite Refrigerator model 795.77579600 made by LG in November 2006. The lightbulbs in the fridge part do NOT go off when the door closes. I was not aware of this issue until today. Today I smelled something burning and when I opened the fridge bulbs were so hot the food items were spoiled inside and the plastic casing around the bulbs was melting. This is a FIRE HAZARD.
When I called Kenmore, they only said this was a “known issue”. They would order replacement kit for the bulbs and send out someone to fix this issue.
This SHOULD be a recall.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
My bedroom and kitchen share the same wall. I noticed the plaster/drywall on my bedroom bubbling and falling apart. My husband moved the refrigerator in the kitchen and behind it we found black smoke on the wall and the drywall/plaster had heat damage and crumbled when you touched it. The fan in the back of the refrigerator was not working and overheated. Almost looks like it may have caught fire. I researched to see if anyone else has had this sort of problem before. I found that there was a recall on my model in 2005 for this reason. I called Sears and they said there is no recall and that there will be a charge of $129 for them to just come out and look at my refrigerator. I’m thankful that I noticed the wall in my bedroom as this could have caused a fire. Sears is not helpful. They finally told me just to call LG who manufactured the Kenmore Elite in 2004. Called them and they said to call back tomorrow and ask for the executive supervisor.

I have a a Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator Model # 795.77542600 which is sold under the Sears Kenmore Elite Brand, but is made by LG. On January 27th, 2012 I opened my refrigerator and saw that the light lens and housing inside the refrigerator were melted and deformed and that the light bulbs were really hot. The food on the upper shelf nearest the lights were also hot. I removed the lens, housing, and light assembly and then disconnected it. I then wrote down my model number and searched the internet to see if this has happened to any other people. I went to the www.mysears.com website and found a posting titled “Light Burned Plastic Housing” in the owner forums. As I read further this same incident has happened to many other owners of this model refrigerator. I think that this is an unsafe refrigerator that can cause a FIRE, and that it should be recalled by Sears and LG. If this is an Elite model, I wonder how the regular models are.

Called Whirlpool and tried to at least get some kind of reinbursement on the replacement part 8201786, but was turned down.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator
We purchased our new home in August 2007. As part of our negotiation, the builder provided us with a Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator, model 795.77573600, Serial No, 707KR00060.
We have recently discovered the bulbs not coming on when doors are open. We removed the bulbs and after testing them, we noticed they were fine and noticed the bulb housing getting very hot. We are extremely concern about melting/potential fire problem.
Please tell us what to do before our house gets burned down.
Thank you, [REDACTED]

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 6, 2012, sent to the company Jan 17, 2012, published by CPSC Jan 31, 2012
The product, in the report: French Door Refrigerator, Stainless Steel, Energy Star, super-sized drawer storage, bottom front tilt freezer door, model #795 77543600. Purchased on 10/19/2006 Sub-total $2099.99/Total with tax $2288.99.
My husband and I awoke to smoke in our kitchen on Monday, Dec. 26th, 2011. Upon inspection of our Kenmore Elite refrigerator, model #795 77543600, the following was discovered. When the refrigerator was opened the lights on the interior roof of the refrigerator had been on, even with the doors closed, to the point that a plastic butter lid was melted/burnt and all items on the top shelf were hot to the touch. The cover was warped and melted with blackened smoke stains. There were visible smoke stains on the metal above the exterior openings where smoke had escaped from the interior of the refrigerator. The bulbs were so hot that when I tried to unscrew one, it exploded, leaving the metal end of the light bulb in the socket. The light sockets are blackened/stained from the heat and fire. The refrigerator had been properly closed, the lights remain on even after the doors are closed. We tested this by placing our camcorder in the refrigerator briefly while closing the doors. When played back the lights remained on, through several different trials. Both switches at the top of the doors could also be pushed in, which is what happens when the doors are shut, and the lights still remain on. There was enough smoke damage that we are having to repaint our ceilings in our kitchen and dining area. Our refrigerator had to be emptied out and cleaned 5 times to remove the smoke damage and smell, which is still evident. We have documented ALL findings through notes, photos, and video. I got on the internet that night and googled for information on our model number and was appalled at the number of people who have had experiences like ours. There are even several class action law suits. Several sites and web pages have been designed for this complaint alone.
It is harrowing to think that this problem has been reported for over 6 years and the refrigerators have not been recalled or consumers notified that there is a fire hazard associated with the product merchandise due to faulty workmanship. In our case there was a fire contained within the refrigerator, but the smoke damage extended to the exterior areas as well.
I sent a letter at 3:27 a.m. on 12/26/2011 to Sears Social Media Customer Service 2 addressing the matter. [REDACTED], Senior Case Manager responded at 7:31 a.m. on 12/26/2011, stating that a case manager has been assigned to address your concerns. We will contact you within 24 business hours. Received an e-mail @ 11:35 from [REDACTED], Social Media Case Manager with Sears Holding Corporation who issued a case number. [REDACTED] has been very friendly and helpful. She set up an appt. with [REDACTED] at A&E to come and repair/service the refrigerator on 12/28/2011. I informed her that I knew of a class action law suit that was settled in Nov. 2011 where anyone who had paid for damage repairs for this problem would be reimbursed 200% of the costs and the warranties were extended for the problem. She said this would be at no cost to us. When A&E arrived,[redacted]informed me that there would be a service charge and I called [REDACTED] back who made arrangements with A&E to cover the costs of the service charge and parts. The following parts were ordered: Case # [REDACTED] Lamp Cover #46 795 3550JJ1070B PCB ASSY, MAI (Panel Board) #46 795 6871JB1423N Lamp Service Kit #46 795 ABY72971502, (This part has been on back order since Dec. 1, 2011 according to [REDACTED] @Sears recall department 1-888-567-3438 with no information on expected arrival). Total cost of the parts $183.29 with the labor costs totaling $197.29. Until all the parts are in, the refrigerator cannot be repaired, and the known fire hazard is left in the homes of consumers, with NO guarantee that it will not catch on fire again. The refrigerator has no lighting and an open live receptacle that will shock/electrocute you if you so much as touch the metal edge of it. The sockets are damaged from heat and visible smoke/heat scorching. The consumer is left with a damaged faulty fire hazard refrigerator and a well rehearsed, “I’m sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.” It is not just an inconvenience, it is mental anguish when you try to sleep, consuming thoughts that your refrigerator will ignite while you are out of the home or sleeping, disruption of activities, and the fear of touching the metal socket and getting shocked. Anger at Sears for selling a product with known defects, and at LG for their lack of responsibility in recalling the faulty manufacturing of a product that caused fire damage in our home. Sears Case Manager has offered a discount on a new refrigerator of 20%-25%, which is unacceptable. Even though they say they understand, they could not possibly know the mental and emotional distress this has caused in our home and how it continues to disrupt our lives everyday. We have two grand children that I care for who cannot stay overnight with us since this has happened due to the fire hazard that this product presents in our home. We have been told to wait just a few more days for a recommendation or solution to this liability from our Social Media Case Manager.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator
On, December 30, 2011, our Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator, model 795.77546600(purchased 11/25/06 at Sears) overheated the interior light and melted the cover and started to melt the ceiling of the refrigerator. It got extremely hot and we had to remove to light. If this had happened overnight, I’m sure there would have been a fire. Luckily, we noticed it during the day and disabled the light to prevent a fire. We checked the buttons on the doors that turn off the lights when the doors are closed, and the lights would not turn off. This is very disturbing and scary. I hate to think that our home could have burned down due to this malfunction. After researching this problem online, I have found many other people who had the same problem. I’ve contacted Sears, and they are sending a replacement light and a repairman to fix the light, but I don’t know what will happen regarding the melting of the ceiling due to this being manufactured by LG. This product needs to be recalled due to the danger of a fire. Apparently there is a class action lawsuit against LG/Kenmore that claimed these refrigerators contain a defect that caused the interior light to remain on when the refrigerator doors are closed.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Side-by-Side Refrigerator, White, through the door water/ice
My wife returned home from work on Friday, December 16 to the smell of smoke in the house. She searched the home for the location of the smell and was unable to pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. When I came home I immediately received a strong smoke/burning odor when I walked in the door. The smell was strongest in our kitchen. I searched the kitchen and pulled the refrigerator out and saw ash and a burn mark on our kitchen tile. I immediately unplugged the refrigerator. I called the fire department to come over to take a report as it appeared the fire was out. I pulled the back cover off the refrigerator and found more ash, burned wires and burned electronics mounted to the compressor. I used a spray bottle to spray everything down with water. The fire department took information from the refrigerator for their report and left. I am glad that we had a ceramic tile floor because any other type of flooring may have ignited and caused a house fire. I did some research and found that this is a common problem with Whirlpool, Kenmore, and Maytag refrigerators of this vintage. It appears that a recall was issued for the Maytags and possibly the Whirlpools, but not the Kenmore. Sears may want look at recalls on these units, because it very easily could have been a house fire.

We went to bed the night of 12/14/2011 around 11:30 pm, everything was fine. Around 3 AM that night I woke up and smelled smoke. I searched the entire house for smoke and found none, however, the smoke smell was very strong in and around our kitchen. I woke my husband up to have him help me figure out what was going on. He immediately knew/said that it smelled like an electrical fire. It seemed as though the smell was coming from our refrigerator, so we pulled it away from the wall to investigate further. After removing the panel/door at the lower bottom, we saw something was burning. There was a plastic box that held wires to the main motor/compressor unit. That box was completely charred and melted. There were also exposed wires and when my husband tried to touch the charred piece, it sparked. FYI- at this point the fridge was still plugged in and the fridge/freezer were both in working order. We immediately unplugged it. There were no injuries and thankfully we were home that night. Had it happened the following night (when we were out of town) we may not have been so lucky.

I have a Kenmore elite fridge that lights had stayed on while doors were shut. The heat melted the entire top of my unit. I have been around and and around with Sears. From the so called “escalation department” 1-877-878-3687 to the infamous 1-800-4-my-home, to their product recall line. All they tell me is that the part is on “back order”. It has been over 2 months now, and they do not know if or when they will ever get the parts in. So, since I did not buy the warrnanty to protect myself from their shoddy workmanship, I am now stuck with a horrible fridge with no lights and burn marks through out...Sears does not take this concern seriously, as they claim to on this site in the numerous comments they have made on similar posts. I will never ever shop “Sears” for anything. This is a crime.

I have researched this on the internet and found several similar complaints. I contactrf Sears Repair center. They connected me to the repair resolution center and I told them what had happened. They told me that there is normal wear and tear on the screws that holds it together and that it didn’t matter how many complaints were found on the internet. This is a serious hazard. We have small children in the home and can’t wait two weeks for Sears to come and fix it, which is the appointment time that was scheduled. We have had to call a private appliance repair. This should be covered due to manufacture error. Please let us know if there have been any other complaints and what the resolution has been. Kenmore (Maytag) needs to recall this product to have it repaired.

My Kenmore (Whirlpool) side by side refrigerator model 106.52542101, Coldspot, serial number SL2244299, has had the relay overload switch replaced 2 times now. the 2nd time, yesterday caused a smoke, smoldering fire while I was home so the house didn’t burn down. I began smelling smoke and couldn’t locate the source. I called the fire department and they sent a truck out. Before they arrived I saw some smoke coming from beneath the refrigerator so I started to pull it away from the wall when the fireman knocked at the door. They came in with their heat sensor and I waited outside. Within a couple of minutes they came out and said it was the refrigerator. The relay switch had melted, shorted out and started the cardboard backing to smoke. I suppose it would have combusted at some point if we hadn’t found it. I called service repair as soon as possible because we had thanksgiving food in the refrigerator. He came that day at 5pm. It was the same repairman from 2 years ago, he had switched companies. It took him two hours and $250 later it was running. I noticed when he had finished, the burnt switch area was empty. So Whirlpool had redesigned the relay kit and the location of the parts so it wouldn’t cause the same problem again, but they made me pay for their bad design by not recalling the part and location. The part is now located inside a cover mounted on the compressor. I can not find a Whirlpool recall on this common failure and the Whirlpool complaint website has hundreds of people with the same problem, some with extensive fire and smoke damage. I am attaching the web site with these complaints for you to see. I think you should look into all the complaints on Whirlpool appliances and get them to cover the repairs and damage caused. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/whirlpool_refrigerators.html thanks [REDACTED] (you can call me or email me if you have more questions)

Sear Kenmore Elite French door refrigerato with bottom freezer Mod #795.77554600, SN 606KR0024 Purchased 12/06 $2400.00.
We gave ourselves a Christmas gift in 2006. We liked the refrigerator but after having it at home for a couple of weeks during the holidays and having a closer look at the unit found it lacking in Kenmore appearance and quality. It just seemed flimsy. About two years ago we opened the refrigerator doors and found the light cover melted. We thought we had left the doors open. Purchased a new light cover and though nothin of it. Last night I opened the door and found the inside of the refrigerator hot about 70* even though the refrigerator was running. The lights were very hot and every thing inside warm. Pressing both door switches simultaniously discovered the lights did not turn off. Figured I would remove the lights and see if the refrigerator would get cool. After a closer look I noticed the light sockets are brown. I though to myself this could have gooten much hotter and perhaps caused a fire! I figured I could remove the lights and see if the refrigerator would cool. I wet a papet towel and grabbed one of the bulbs, as soon as I did that the light explded into small fragments striking me just below my eyes. This morning I called Sears and after being transfeed around and hangin up and calling again, Finally found someone that said they would be out on Monday and fix the problem free of charge. Then tried slling me a one year warranty for $265. I am glad all they are fixing is my refrigerator,

My Kenmore refrigerator, Model 106.53652300, manufacturered in February 2004 caught on fire. I awoke at 2 a.m. in morning on November 22, 2011 to an arching noise and a smoke filled kitchen. I was able to pull the refrigerator out from the wall and unplug the cord. Fortunately, no one was injured and no property damage took place, except for the damage to the frigerator. I was shocked at the number of similar complaints I found online and no recalls have occurred on this product.
