My Cuisinart DCC 1200 started smoking and produced an acrid smell. I unplugged unit and let it cool. Seems like the unit could start a fire, I am wary of replacing it without a fix from the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart 12 Cup Programmable Coffee Maker See http://reviews.bedbathandbeyond.com/2009/BBB14476784/reviews.htm Coffee maker will serve up a great cup of coffee and enhance your countertop in stylish black and handsome stainless steel accents. Fully automatic, this coffee maker has 24-hour programmability and offers 1 to 4 cup settings. Use the BrewPause™ feature to pour a cup even before brewing is complete. The 60-second reset “remembers” where it was in the brewing process and settings. The included charcoal water filter and gold tone filter ensure a fresh, delicious tasting coffee time after time. Carafe has a 12-cup capacity and ergonomic handle, dripless spout and knuckle guard. Limited 3-year warranty. UL listed. Measures: 8.00” x 8.11” x 14.17”. Model DCC-1100BK.
My Cuisinart 12-cup Programmable Coffee Maker - Model #DCC-1100BK, is overheating and has slightly melted my countertop. The machine appears to intermittently have an electrical short (problems turning on or brewing) and only intermittently becomes too hot to the touch. I contacted Cuisinart about this maker. The has me ship the product to them. After their research, I received a letter stating they did not find any problems with the maker after 3 brew cycles, and they shipped it back to me stating it was safe. I continued to complain to them that it was not working properly. They sent a new maker, same model. I have looked at the reviews on Bed, Bath, & Beyond’s website regarding this product. It appears there are several other customers who have had a similar complaint, but also state fire and smoke. I wanted to file this report to let you know there is a product that could potentially catch a house on fire and harm families.

Our Cuisinart Coffee pot started crackling and smoke began to pour out. We unplugged the machine but the smoke continued for a while. I am wondering if there was a fire inside the unit that eventually burned itself out.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart FlavorBrew 12-cup Coffeemaker Model DCC-750BK
On Thursday January 26, 2012, my Cuisinart FlavorBrew 12-cup Coffeemaker, model DCC-750BK caught on fire. I started the brew cycle and stepped into another room. During the brewing process, the coffee pot began began making a loud buzzing sound and I could smell burning/melting plastic. When I re-entered the kitchen, smoke was pouring out of the brew plate area at the bottom of the device. The brew plate was glowing bright red and small flames/sparks were coming out from beneath the front area of the brew plate. It was very frightening! If I hadn’t been in the house at the time, there would have been a fire and smoke damage.
I’m concerned that is coffeemaker is a potential fire hazard. I’m reporting this incident because I’m concerned that my experience may not be an isolated occurrence. And I want the Consumer Products Safety Commission and other consumers to be aware of the potential fire hazard.
My Cuisinart FlavorBrew 12-cup Coffeemaker was purchased January 28, [2011]. It was in use for only one year. It has a 3-year limited warranty.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart DCC 1200 Coffee Maker
Cuisinart DCC-1200 overheated May 27, 2012 Today, after making coffee I left the kitchen. Several minutes later my wife heard something in the kitchen. The sound was coffee boiling in the carafe sitting on the warming plate of the Cuisinart DCC-1200 (made in China). Smoke was pouring up from the warming plate as the plastic had begun to melt around the metal plate and it was only moments away from catching on fire. I rushed outside with the coffee maker to minimize the amount of smoke inside our home. If she had not heard the coffee boiling we would have encountered a much larger fire and smoke damage. I looked for a recall on the internet and found nothing related to the Cuisinart DCC-1200. I called the Cuisinart 800 number and was told that mine was the first report that she was aware of. She said she would ship a new coffee maker to me and all I had to do was return the power cord. I felt that not much research could be obtained from the cord so I returned it to the Kohl’s store in Kokomo, Indiana. Upon returning it to the service department I was told that this was the second Cuisinart DCC 1200 coffee maker to be returned in the last two weeks for the same problem. I accepted an identical DCC 1200 replacement but I will be very cautious using it in the future. In fact, I will only plug it in when being used. Regards, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Brew Central 12 cup Coffeemaker - DCC-1200 Series
I have been using my Cuisinart DCC-1200 Series Brew Central coffeemaker for approximately 2 months. Up until today I used the gold tone filter that came with the coffeemaker. Today I used one of the paper filters that came with the coffeemaker. When I was cleaning out the machine tonight, I found that the paper filter had scorch marks on it, that were not on it when I put it in the machine this morning. i was concerned this could have lead to a fire. I searched this site and found more reports of fires starting with this model.

The product, in the report: Cuisenart CBC 00 coffee maker
Cuisenart CBC 00 coffee maker started making strange popping noises after brewing pot of coffee. When I checked it the heating element was smoking, producing an acrid smell and the electrical controls were all off. Luckily I was still home so I was able to unplug the unit and take it outside. If it had been left unattended I’m quite sure the unit would have caught fire.

Below is the e-mail trail outling our communications with Cuisinart concerning their DCC-1200 coffee maker, its hazardous design and unwillingness to disclose design specifics and to resolve this matter.
-----Original Message----- Sent: Friday, May 04, 2012 7:21 AM To: cservepop@conair.com Subject: RE: Cuisinart.com Product Inquiry
[REDACTED] No offense but I don’t think that “valued” customers would appreciate the canned response that we receive every time we correspond with Cuisinart. We do not wish to have the DCC 1200 replaced unless Cuisinart were willing to be transparent with regard to their designed “fail-safe mechanism” that results in the device ending its useful life in a smoky trail. The main feature that prompted us to purchase this model is the ability to place the brewing process on a timer, so that one might wake to freshly made coffee. With the DCC 1200, our fear is that the unsupervised unit will catch fire, set off smoke alarms, summon the fire dept and risk damage to people and property. We would not feel safe using this device as it has been “designed”. Cuisinart’s unwillingness to be up front here is most disturbing. Please elevate my concerns to someone who can provide something more than your boilerplate response. Absent this, my next correspondence will go to the CPSC, BBB and the office of the PA AG. Very truly yours,

Valued Customer,
We would like to think all of our customers are satisfied customers. It always concerns us when we hear of a product that has not met this ideal. If we are not providing you with the product you have come to depend on for quality and value, we are truly sorry you are not satisfied with our products. We welcome and invite your concerns. Your comments will be passed along to our Marketing, Engineering and Quality Assurance Groups for review.
Sincerely, [REDACTED] Cuisinart Customer Service Representative
------------ Original Message ------------------- [REDACTED] From your response below it appears that only an exchange is possible and that Cuisinart will not refund any $ for a product that is designed for planned obsolescence; to self-destruct at some point during its lifespan. If the “design of the product” is such that it will smoke & burn, albeit to a limited extent, as a built in “safety feature”, shouldn’t the consumer be aware that this might occur so at the very least panic might be avoided as well as unnecessary smoke/fire alarm activation? A manufacturer’s warranty that replaces a failed product with a product that incorporates the same flaw(safety feature) seems a bit illusory and one that falls short from the consumer’s perspective. We do not feel safe if the replacement unit incorporates the same design and components as the unit that failed. Without a detailed outline of the design/safety mechanism, along with a guarantee that the above failure will not repeat, we cannot accept a replacement of the same unit. Absent your willingness to issue a cash refund, please advise if you can issue a Cusinart/Conair gift certificate/card of equal value. We look forward to hearing from you. XXX

------------ Original Message ------------------- [REDACTED]Could you please clarify your statement that you “do not have any known issues with any of our units” after your review of the links directly below and further along in this chain of e-mails.
I would imagine that by now, some of the units highlighted below have been examined by your engineers. If your only offer is to replace the DCC-1200 unit, please provide the results of your “vigorous product safety investigation” and the “fail-safe mechanism” that is a “safety feature” which is “ an integral part of the design of this product”. [REDACTED] I appreciate your reply but ask that you please provide either a pre-paid postage for the return of the coffee maker or you agree to reimburse us for the cost of the return. Your note also suggests that there will be some form of “replacement” of this item. Given the extremely dangerous nature of this defective product, we would not feel safe receiving any/or using the same device. To the best of our recollection, the unit was purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond, where it currently sells for $90. Please advise. Regards, XXX XXXXXXX

At approximtely 8 AM this morning, our Cuisinart DCC-1200, which had long finished brewing, suddenly began to make a popping sound and smoke began to billow out the bottom of the unit. Fortunately, we were in the area when this occurred and we were able to remove the unit and prevent a house fire. Based on the links below, this appears to be a well documented problem, for which a recall or warning should be considered to avoid any loss of life and property. This unit was purchased from Bed Bath Beyond approximately 2 years ago.

From “Epinions” Cuisinart DCC-1200 Coffee Maker Fire Hazard - Beware! Written: Oct 04 ‘11 Pros:Good taste. Auto off feature is adjustable. Auto timer. Water filter. Adjustable hot plate temperature. Cons:Fire Hazzard. Difficult to fill water resevoir. Coffee decanter difficult to pull out. I bought the Cuisinart Brew Central DCC-1200 12 Cups Coffee Maker November 14, 2010 from Amazon for $65.25. I have used it approximately 5 times/week. Yesterday, during the brewing process, I heard unusual sounds (gurgling, cracking, hissing) coming from the machine. When I checked it, I found smoke coming from the hot plate. I lifted the caraft (the coffee was actually boiling) and found the front half of the hot plate bright red. I immediately unplugged the unit, while smoke began to pour out from the hot plate and there was a stong burning plastic smell. I called Cuisinart for a refund. They refused and wanted to send me a replacement. Obviously, I was not interested. This would have led to kitchen fire if I had not been in the kitchen at this time. Please do not buy this product. From research on the internet, this is becoming a common complaint about this product and Cuisinart is not standing behind this product.

Cusinart Dcc-1200 coffee maker has been in service since early December 2010. This morning during the brew cycle it started to make a gurgling and popping sound followed by smoke coming from the bottom of the unit. It was unplugged and set in the sink.
Purchased from Amazon.com and upon checking reviews this isn’t the first time this has happened with this model as reported by other consumers. This product suffers from a SERIOUS design flaw that needs to be addressed. In my opinion it is an unsafe product that needs to be dealt with.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Grind Brew Thermal Automatic Coffeemaker 10 CUP PROGRAMMABLE AUTOMATIC COFFEEMAKER Color: Stainless black
I have purchased 2 Cuisinart Grind Brew Thermal coffee makers within the last 4 years and both have an issue with the metal heating plate at the bottom of the machine separating from the unit and water leaking from the unit. The separation is visible and one can see the water leaking from the unit. The unit is used one time per day to make morning coffee and all manufacturer instructions were followed. When water leaks from the unit, it creates a safety hazard where I get an electrical shock when cleaning up the spilled water. I like this product very much but am unhappy with this safety design flaw and feel it is a safety issue for the public. I have also reported this to Cuisinart. Model number: DGB600BC

The product, in the report: A 12-cup coffee maker with automatic turn-off (set for 4 hours). Using gold filter.
About 1/2 hour after brewing a pot of coffee, the coffee maker suddenly started loudly hissing, gurgling, and popping...similar to the normal sounds at the end of the brew cycle, but louder. At the same time, smoke began appearing, accompanied by a strong acrid odor like that of an electrical fire. The machine’s on-light was off, though it had not been turned off. We unplugged the unit, removed the filled carafe, and allowed the machine to cool down, with no further incident.

The product, in the report: 12-cup programmable automatic coffee maker
Cuisinart coffee programmable coffee maker model DCC1200 purchased new in Nov. 2010 through Amazon.com. On 5/4/12 after a two-hour brew and keep warm sequence, I was in another room and heard a loud sizzling and crackling sound coming from our kitchen. The unit was apparently off, but bluish smoke was pouring from the unit and the remaining coffee in the carafe (about two 5 oz. cups) was quite hot. I quickly unplugged the unit before things got worse. Thankfully, my kitchen counter top was not damaged and I was home to intervene. It supposedly has a three year warranty, but other owners have lamented the hassle of repackaging the defective product for return and paying for round trip shipping costs totaling nearly $30.00 (for returned and replacement units).
I will not have another Cuisinart coffee maker in my home- it’s not worth risking a fire and endangering my family. Multiple Cuisinart coffee maker failures across different models identical to my scenario have been reported through the CPSC saferproducts.gov web site. Cuisinart should be compelled to recall and stop selling these defective units and back their product with full refunds regardless if under warranty; no questions, no hassles. It is only a matter of time before Cuisinart is going to face property damage or loss of life claims from knowingly continuing to sell a dangerous product.

Electric coffee maker failure with overheating and smoking. I have a Cuisinart Coffeemaker, #DCC-2200 Series. It caught fire in my kitchen after it finished brewing. This is the SECOND time that a Cuisinart Coffemaker started a fire in my kitchen. The first time was in 2007. I contacted consumer safety and only after doing that did Cuisinart contact me. They sent me a new machine, same model. The same thing has just happened again. The coffee began boiling in the pot and smoke came out of the machine. I quickly unplugged it, and put it outside. Had I not been in the kitchen at the time, my entire kitchen could have gone on fire.

our cusinart coffeemaker DCC-1200 started making popping noises this morning. When I went to investigate, the coffee maker was much hotter than normal and I then smelled smoke coming from the bottom. I unplugged the unit immediately and took it outside, where it continued to smoke for many minutes longer.
Thank goodness I was home and awake as I’m afraid it could have caused a house fire. It was scary and the smell (acrid, plastic, awful) was bad.

Tonight we used our Cuisinart FlavorBrew Thermal 10-Cup Coffeemaker (CBC-1600 PC). After it completed its brew cycle, smoke started coming out from the heating plate and from the back of the machine. We unplugged it, which did not stop the smoke. We then put it in the sink and ran water over it for about 1-2 minutes before the smoke stopped coming out. For the past two weeks, the coffeemaker had been making an occasional buzzing noise. This typically happened when we brewed smaller pots of coffee (e.g., 4 cups or less). The noise happened again tonight when we brewed a smaller pot of coffee.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart drip coffee maker, model number CBC-00 (from label on bottom)
I bought a Cuisinart CBC-00 drip coffee maker in the fall of 2010. It has worked fine for a year and a half. Then this past Saturday, 24 March 2012, it had been turned on for about an hour. I went to pour the last cup of coffee from the carafe when I saw heavy, acrid smoke coming out from the bottom of the unit and around the carafe heating plate. The light that’s normally illuminated to show the unit is turned on was off. I immediately unplugged the coffee maker and took it outside, thinking it might be close to bursting into flames. The bottom third of the unit was very hot, the metal plate on the bottom of the case was extremely hot. It did slowly cool down, with no flame seen. The carafe heating plate was bulged up and badly warped. The entire house reeked of acrid, electrical fire smoke all weekend. I shudder to think what could have happened if I had not been close by and caught the fire in its early stages.

On March 9, 2012 I brewed my coffee as I always did in the Cuisinart Classic 12-cup Programmable Coffeemaker DCC1100 series. About 2 hours after the coffee automatically brewed I had left the room for a few minutes when my husband called me back to tell me that there was smoke coming from the unit and that the coffee was BOILING. We unplugged the pot and put it outside on concrete so it wouldn’t flare up in my kitchen.
I called Cuisinart and they offered to send me another pot, but I would have to let them charge me $10.00 for postage and handling (I didn’t ask how they were going to collect this fee) and I would have to send the old one back (at my own expense). I don’t know if they would have charged me for a replacement pot if I didn’t return the old one. I said I would think about that offer.
I went online and searched for “Cuisinart coffeepot fires” and found MANY similar incidents for both this pot and other model numbers. I can’t believe this coffeemaker has not already been recalled!!

Cuisinart DC-1200 coffee maker set to brew this morning. Woke up to loud boiling noise and electrical smell. Heating element had overheated and, had I not awakened, could have caught fire as it was already smoking. Contacted company and they are sending me another one “no questions asked” as this is apparently common but has not been recalled. I am also going to have to pay shipping to return the burned out unit.

Cuisinart coffee maker (model DCC-1100) started smoking and smelling of burnt plastic just as it finished brewing. My wife immediately unplugged it and moved it outdoors, so no damage was done to the house. However, had she not been in the kitchen at the time there might have been considerable damage.
On an unrelated note, I find your web site to be somewhat difficult to negotiate and a possible barrier to many consumers.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart DCC-1200 Series 12-cup coffee maker. Black and stainless in color. The appliance includes, clock, delayed start and auto shut-off after two hours.
My Cuisinart DCC-1200 Series coffee maker began to smoke, make a crackling sound and produce the smell of burning plastic about one hour after I had made a coffee. We had this appliance for about 18 months to 2 years and have had no other problems.
When I got to the coffee maker the power light had gone out and the clock had stopped working. I pulled the plug, removed the pot of coffee and waited for it to cool sightly. The I lifted the unit and placed it in the sink.
Also, noticed smoke smudge on the counter top after I moved the coffee maker.
I suspect the thermostat may be defective causing the warming element to overheat and start to melt the plastic case of the appliance.

Cuisinart DCC-1200
This morning, after about 1.5 years of use, our Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker started to boil the coffee that was still sitting in the carafe. Smoke began filling our Kitchen with the horrible stench of burning plastic. We are very happy that we were home at the time to quickly unplug the unit and toss it outside. Given that we often depend on the auto-shutoff capability when we leave the house I can see how this is a major safety issue. We don’t see any recall online but lots of other similar incidences. Especially troubling are cases where the unit was not turned on at the time.

I pulled out the plug immediately. I did research online at Amazon and this is a common complaint from the customer reviews on this product. It should be recalled and the problem should be corrected. The unit is 14 months old it is covered under a 3 year warranty but the company requires you to pay for shipping and a $10 payment to cover S&H to return. Customers should not have to pay for a common hazardous product only to be replaced by another defective product.

We have a Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee-maker that briefly after brewing the coffee started to produce a lot of smoke. There was a growing smell of plastic burning and fortunately my 5-yr old daughter caught it before we left the house. I immediately unplugged it from the outlet. I’m happy my house did not burn down, and sad to know that this happened to so many other people as I can see reported here without any serious action being taken against removing this product from the market. Unfortunately, it will take somebody’s house to burn down first it seems.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart DTC-975; 12 Cup Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker
Regarding the Cuisinart DTC-975 12 Cup Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker: I have used this coffeemaker for about a year without any problems. This morning I made coffee as usual. A beeper will sound when the unit is finished and the coffee is ready.
The beeper sounded and I waited about another 30 minutes before going into the kitchen to pour myself a cup of coffee. Upon entering the kitchen, I discovered coffee all over the counter top and on the floor. The pot appeared to be properly seated in the coffeemaker. When I took it out, hot coffee began pouring out of the filter basket onto the bottom of the coffeemaker. It just missed my hand. I grabbed another nearby pot to catch. Upon opening the filter basket compartment, it was still full of liquid.
The thermal pot was only about 1/4 full, so this was not a case of it being overfilled. It had stopped filling at that point for some inexplicable reason which resulted in the remainder of the coffee either running out onto the counter and floor or staying inside the filter compartment until the pot was removed.
No injuries were sustained but a major mess in the kitchen resulted.

Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker
We bought this coffeemaker after reading several reviews and a recommendation from a friend. A few months after we bought it, our friend emailed us to warn us that her coffeemaker had caught fire. One morning after it finishing brewing, the coffee maker made a loud popping sound. Luckily our friend had forewarned us about her experience and we were actually in the kitchen when our appliance started smoking. Already aware of what was happening, we quickly unplugged it and brought it outside. Clearly if we had not been in the kitchen at the time, we could have had extensive damage from a fire. The smell of burning plastic lingered for several hours. We looked up on the internet and was surprised to find how many people are complaining about this model smoking and burning. Look at the latest user reviews on amazon and consumer affairs.

The product, in the report: Electric coffee maker
We bought a Cusinart electric coffee maker, model DCC-750, serial # 00907 new from JC Penney in Dec.2010 and have been using it daily for coffee and tea brewing. On 2/11/2012 the unit started making a buzzing noise when turning it on to brew loose tea, but the buzzing subsided and the brewing continued. The unit was finishing it’s brew cycle when I noticed smoke coming from the heating element area where the decanter is. The cycle finished with the 5 beep completion notification, but the beeps sounded muffled - not normal. There was noticiable burning odor coming from the unit and then I removed the full decanter and noticed a lot more smoke coming from the entire unit. The unit shut itself off and I unplugged it and ran it outside so it would not trip our smoke detectors. We will NOT be using it and will dispose of it.

We had brewed a pot of coffee in it about 20 minutes before this incident took place. The Left rotary knob on the machine was in the Brew Position, the middle rotary knob was in the up position between ON and OFF (it is a momentary switch that self centers to that position), and the right rotary knob was in the M (for Medium heat) position.

We unplugged the thing and ran it out to the backyard. We ended up watching it continue to billow black smoke, while we stood there with the hose at the ready. After making a pot of coffee in the morning, coffee pot had stopped brewing and was in it’s typical keep warm setting that is on an automatic timer (about 4 c. left in the pot). Heard popping noises from the room that overlooks the kitchen and smelled a really awful burning smell. Looked to the kitchen and saw it smoking, ran in, and my husband unplugged the pot. It kept smoking and pouring out a really foul, toxic smelling smoke like electrical or plastic fire so I used oven mits to move the unit without the carafe to the backyard where it continued to smoke until it cooled off. Smoke seemed to be coming out of the place where the power cord attaches to the machine in the back.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Brew Central DCC-1200 coffeemaker purchased March 2011
This is in reference to a Cuisinart Brew Central Coffeemaker, model DCC-1200, purchased in March 2011 from Amazon. I bought this because it was rated #1 in the Consumer Reports Dec. 2010 issue. This week it started to make a clicking noise after being on for about an hour, then began to smoke from the back of it. I caught it in time since I happened to be in the kitchen but I’m reporting this here because I believe it is a fire hazard. According to Consumeraffairs.com website, others have had the exact same thing happened. I reported it to Cuisinart today like they did but the company claims they know nothing about it. They would replace it with the same model but not refund the money unless I tried this model 3 times. Needless to say I will not try this again since I don’t need my house to catch on fire. Just passing this info on to you. Thanks, [REDACTED]

Cuisinart Grind and Brew Thermal Coffeemaker DGB-650 leaks water into and from bottom of coffeemaker. This is caused because aluminum heating element cover expands when water is passing thru and an aluminum bar fastened to the heating element wears holes into the heating element. The water that is leakings out is close to electrical wires.
This is the third Cuisinart coffeemaker we’ve had with this problem, the other two were DGB-600 models.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Brew Central Coffeemaker Model CBC-4400
This morning we heard sound coming from our Cuisinart Brew Central coffeemaker model CBC-4400 S/N 70531C. Upon investigation the coffee in the carafe was bubbling. Then a white vapor was emanating from the left side of the base. Within seconds the strong smell of burning electrical components was evident. I unplugged the coffeemaker and removed it to the back patio to cool or burnout. An online Internet search showed the several other reports of Cuisinart fires had been reported. We were lucky to be in attendance when this fire occurred. The coffeemaker has a two hour turnoff and our unit was still in within that time period. Since the coffeemaker has a timer feature I recommend that it NOT BE USED. To have the coffeemaker turn on during an unattended time would be a hazard. The coffeemaker should have a high current and high temperature cutoff if it is equipped with a timer. The unit should be deemed UNSAFE if plugged in and NOT ATTENDED!

The Cuisinart DCC-1100 coffee maker which we bought last year, had a meltdown this morning. Smell of an electric fire, smoked, popped, hissed and had we not unplugged it, it would have caused a fire. I went on Amazon.com, searched for the product and found that there had been over 7 pages of reviews in which the coffee maker had done the same thing as mine. Had we been out of town or away, I have no doubt that it would have caused major damage to my home. This model is still offered for sale on amazon.com.

The product, in the report: Coffee Maker DCC 1200
Our Cuisinart DC 1200 smoked, crackled and shot sparks out of the base while in the OFF position. We have been making coffee in this machine for almost 1 year and have never had any issues. If we would have been asleep or not at home, this product would have fully caught on fire and potentially burned our home down. The toxic smoke trigged an asthma attack that required several treatments on my part to control .
I called Cusinart and was told they they have not had any complaints regarding this machine. I will be returning to Bed Bath and Beyond for a full refund and would suggest that someone/anyone look into a serious recall of this product. Further research yields a large collection of consumers who have experienced the same or similar issue a Cuisinart product- not just limited to the model I purchased.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart, Brew Central, Programmable 12 cup coffee maker.
We have a one to two year old Cuisinart, Brew Central, 12 cup coffee maker. Serial number 00720h. We made coffee as usual this morning, poured 2 cups and left the room. When we returned to the kitchen about an hour later the coffee maker was making odd sputtering sounds. [REDACTED] picked up the pot and we saw smoke coming out from under the heating element. We immediately unplugged it and brought it outside. The movement increased the amount of smoke emitting from the machine. We wound up dousing it with a hose. Yes, some steam occurred due to the water hitting the hot elements, but there was quite a bit of grey smoke too. It was quite a surprise.
We are convinced that had we not returned to the room when we did that this machine would have started a fire! It sits under wooden upper cabinets in the kitchen!
Should I deliver this machine somewhere for further investigation?

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Brew Central Coffee Maker, Model DCC-1200
I have Cuisinart DCC-1200 Coffee Maker that was approximately 15 months old. After making a pot of coffee today, I went back to my desk. Within a few minutes, I heard loud snapping and popping sounds coming from the kitchen. I ran out there to see smoke billowing from the base of the DCC-1200 unit. Smoke was filling the kitchen. I quickly unplugged it and and placed it outside. I would guess it was only a minute or two from catching fire. I got the unit replaced under warranty from the store I purchased it from.
Out of curiosity, I searched online to see if other Cuisinart DCC-1200 customers had the same problem. I was stunned to find dozens of people who have had the exact same thing happen to their Cuisinart Coffee Maker within the last two months. Many of them had their units actually catch fire.
I called Cusinart customer service. They showed a very casual attitude regarding my news and said they are always improving their products. I am currently in the process of contacting the head of customer service at Cuisinart. I will keep climbing the ladder until I get action.
The Cuisinart DCC-1200 is clearly a dangerous product that MUST be recalled and taken off the market immediately!!! How many customers’ home need to burn down and lives lost before this problem is addressed?

I purchased a Cuisinart coffee maker Model DCC 1200 (Serial #91204) approximately 1 year ago. I brewed coffee yesterday and approximately 30 minutes after brewing the coffee, I heard a crackling sound coming from the coffee maker. When I walked into the kitchen, I found the coffee maker was smoking and on fire and had a horrible burning electrical smell. I immediately unplugged it and took it outside. From reading other online reports, it sounds like this coffee maker needs to be recalled before someone dies in a fire. I called Cuisinart and they told me that it had not been recalled. They offered to replace it, but I do not want another one. I purchased a different brand entirely.

I have a Cuisinart DCC1200 that I purchased about 1 1/2 years ago. This morning the base of the maker caught fire. A quick internet search and reviews on Consumer Report’s site show that this appears to be a common problem. I was standing next to the coffee maker when it caught fire. The pot appeared to be brewing normally, but within seconds acrid smelling smoke began to pour out of the base. I unplugged the maker and remove the carafe. The heating element was bright red and extremely hot. Had I not been standing there, the unit would have likely caused a large fire.

I contacted the manufacturer directly and they said they do not offer a warranty on their carafes. I wanted to report the incident since it could have been a very dangerous situation because some of the very small shards of glass (or thermal material) were shot out of the carafe when the glass exploded.

It smoldered outside for 20 miniutes.
If we would have set the timer the night before like we often do to have the coffee ready when we woke up , this could have happened while we weren’t in the room with disastrous results The only reason there wasn’t a bigger problem was becasue we were right there.
Complete fire hazard.

This is the third failure of a Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker we have experienced. The first one tuned itself on whenever it felt like it. It was retuned and replaced under warrantee. The second and third ones went up in smoke. The third one is less then a year old. I contacted Cuisinart customer service, and “[REDACTED]” apologized, and promised a replacement, and waived the ten dollar return shipping fee to us. But this hardly addresses the over-arching issue. The product, in the report: Cuisinart Automatic Grind and Brew Thermal Coffee Maker- model #: DDC590PC
Several hours AFTER making coffee with our Cuisinart Automatic Grind and Brew Thermal Coffee Maker- model #: DDC590PC my husband and I smelled smoke coming from our kitchen. Further inspection revealed a small flame and smoke emanating from the back of our coffee maker. We are very surprised and dismayed by what happened. Luckily we were home to catch the problem early before serious property damage occurred!! Our coffee maker does not have a hot plate. The maker should turn off after coffee is done brewing (coffee stays hot is a thermal carafe). Cuisinart stated that there is nothing they can do as the coffee maker is no longer under warranty. Further investigation online revealed that this is not an isolated incident. Link: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/cuisinart.html Someone should look into these incidents before lives are lost. Thank you!

The product, in the report: CUISINART COFFEE MAKER DCC 1200, BLACK
My Cuisinart Coffee Maker, Model DCC 1200 filled my kitchen with smoke this morning. We first heard a cracking and popping noise and then smelled electric burning. If we had not been in the room my house would have been set on fire. I quickly removed the maker and it continued to smoke outside.
This was very dangerous and this product should have been recalled before. I have read many reports of this same type of problem about this coffee maker.
I have reported this to Cuisnart and am waiting for their reply. This unit was purchased in April 2010.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker
At 6am on Oct. 24, 2011, I made coffee with my Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker. The unit is roughly one-year-old. It shut itself off about an hour later via its “auto” off function. Around 9am, my dog perked up and growled at the kitchen. I could hear crackling sounds. I walked into the kitchen to find the coffee maker engulfed in smoke. There were no visible flames, but the unit was very hot and continued to smoke. It had an acrid electrical arcing odor. The unit was still plugged in. I unplugged it and moved it out of the house, where it continued to spew smoke.

I was manually brewing 6 cups of coffee in my Cuisinart DCC-1000 coffee maker. Approximately 30 minutes after the brewing was complete sparks and smoke began emitting underneath the coffee maker. Luckily I was present as this began to happen and I quickly unplugged the coffee maker and moved it outside and doused it with water. The only other issue I have had with this coffee maker is the clock would not keep accurate time.

The product, in the report: coffeemaker
Less than a year ago we purchased a Cuisinart coffeemaker model DCC-1100 in black. This week it almost burned our house down! Something malfunctioned in the heater plate. It started making a clicking sound and the coffee in the pot was rapidly boiling. You could smell burning electrical wires. We immediately unplugged the unit before it caught fire. It was just fortunate we were in the kitchen at the time and not in the shower as we frequently use the timer feature to wake up to a fresh brewed pot of coffee every morning.

My Cuisinart Coffee Maker model DCC-1200 is about a year old. On 9/17/11, after brewing a pot of coffee, it started smoking and giving off a heavy burning smell. It got worse to the point I had to unplug it, put it in the sink and spray water on it and up under the bottom where the motor vents are. It could have developed into a very dangerous situation if I had not been home.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker, plastic housing, glass carafe, burner element, clock and timer for programmed brewing. 120V, 60 Hz, 1025 W
I had made coffee in my Cuisinart DCC-1200 electric coffee maker. I had poured myself a cup of coffee and left another couple of cups in the carafe on the coffee maker’s heating element. After some time I heard a strange sound from the direction of the coffee maker, as if something was bubbling. I looked and saw that the coffee was boiling vigorously. I ran to the coffee maker to turn it off and unplug it, and as I did so it began to smoke and release a smell as of burning plastic. The bottom of the coffee maker was extremely hot, and the smoke appeared to be coming from the point where the cord enters the back of the machine. Fearing that it might still burst into flame even though unplugged (and not wanting my kitchen to be filled with noxious fumes) I took it outside to cool off.
A searh of the internet revealed a number of other recent reports of identical problems with this and related models. See http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/cuisinart.html (Ignore the first item about a popcorn maker.)

Cuisinart DCC-1200 Series Coffeemaker about 8 months old. The unit was off, still plugged in and some coffee remained in carafe. Approximately 30 minutes later, noticed the odor of burning rubber or something electrical. Returned to the kitchen to find the coffeemaker smoking and the remaiing liquid now boiling in the carafe. Unplugged the unit and using potholders, placed the unit in the sink. The entire unit was extremely warm at this point and the smoke caused a nearby smoke alarm to go off.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Brew Central Coffeemaker, Model DCC-1200 Series, Serial Number 91211 h. This coffeemaker was ordered by [REDACTED]from Amazon.com on 02/09/2010 and was registered in his name on the Cuisinart Internet site 02/12/2010. The coffeemaker is turned on every morning and evening for approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours, and the carafe temperature remains set to “L”. An extension cord has never been used with this coffeemaker. The automatic feature has never been used. The pot was cleaned with vinegar and water several times although the self-clean indicator light has never illuminated.
Coffee for the evening was in the carafe for about 2 hours. I heard noise across the room and discovered the coffee in the carafe was boiling, and smoke was coming from the bottom of the coffeemaker. I immediately unplugged the coffeemaker and moved it next to the stove exhaust fan. If I had not been in the same room, I seriously believe that a fire would have started. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Coffeemaker DCC 1200
We purchased a Cuisinart DCC1200 9 months ago in November 2010. Coffeemaker worked great, until this morning. We made a pot of coffee and within a half an hour my husband smelled smoke. There was smoke billowing out from the bottom of the coffeemaker. My husband unplugged the coffeemaker and ran outside with it. After looking @ the unit. The plate @ the bottom started to crackle and base of unit had begun to melt. If we had not been home I’m positive a fire would have started. I searched the web for answers and realized many other people have encountered the same problem. The is a very dangerous, potentially life threatening problem that needs to be addressed by the company.
