The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The consumer says during the past two or three years the unit would stop working. Each time it has turned out to be the control panel which he has switched out several times. He says there is a short or electrical burn out. He says the control panel has a scorched mark around it. He also has noticed melted plastic inside the unit and smoke emitting from it. He has seen numerous online reports of consumers experiencing house fires with this particular brand. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told him they were aware of this problem but no record of it being a major problem or any record of a recall.

No one hurt Made Feb 19, 2012, sent to the company Feb 28, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 13, 2012
The product, in the report: KitchenAid SS dishwasher
My Kitchen Aid Dishwasher stopped working and there was an oder of burnt electronics near it. After removing the cover the electronic board had started to melt. Luckily it stopped working before it could start a fire. Now that I have done some research online I see that this seems to be a common factor in the KA line of dishwashers.
The unit was bought in 2006 and was a high end one that was functioning fine until this. It is not repairable in my opinion since the real problem is what is causing the melting connectors and replacing the board is a band aid. I tried to contact the company and no one got back to me.
I believe that your agency is already looking into this and here is one more complaint to add to the list.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Undercounter dishwasher, color Biscuit. Originally purchased in Nov. 2000 and replaced by manufacturer in 2003 because of performance issues.
While running the dishwasher, a flame shot out about 8 to 10 inches from the right side of the control panel. Luckily my wife was in the kitchen at the time and called for me. I opened the door to stop the washer and turned off the circuit breaker. The flame had started to scorch the cabinet next to it. Had we not been home, this could have easily caused a major fire.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid, 4-Inch Console, I-Class Dishwasher
About 10-15 minutes after starting a load of dishes, I heard a noise in the kitchen, glanced quickly in there but didn’t see anything amiss. Within about 2 minutes I could smell burning plastic from the family room where we were watching TV. By then we could see smoke seeping out from the control panel on the dishwasher. I grabbed the handle to pull it open but the plastic was too hot to touch...and I could still hear arcing sounds inside. I ran to our electrical box and shut off that circuit to stop the damage. But, by then the entire control board, connectors and wiring harness were burned beyond repair. It took more than a week to get the smell out of the house—and a lot of cleaning. The fire started behind the main fuse on the circuit board, shorting and burning every electrical component inside—before burning the main fuse itself. Our house breaker never tripped—as has been the case with almost all Kitchenaid dishwasher fires we have heard of. Phil’s Appliance Repair came the next day (www.phils.com) and told us the control board, thermal fuse and wiring harness were beyond repair, and probably the pump as well, and that the wiring harness is no longer available through Kitchenaid/Whirlpool parts supply system. We paid $61.50 to get this news. But, had we left the house after turning on the dishwasher, which we often do, we may not even have a house to come home to.

The product, in the report: under the counter stainless steel dishwasher
While operating the dishwasher on normal wash/heatless dry it stopped working in the middle of the cycle . The cycle is approximately 45 minutes long and the machine lost power within 30 minutes into the cycle. The consumer noticed a burning odor and powered the circuit breaker in the off position.
The consumer contacted A1 Appliance on 1/30/2012 and they scheduled to have to send out a technician on 1/31/201
A service technician came out to the home and indicated that the wiring harness melted to the board which also caused damages to the board. While the service technician was at the home the consumer contacted the firm. While speaking with the firm she was offered a new appliance.
She will take delivery to the new appliance within a minimum of two weeks and they will remove the old appliance.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Dishwasher
Kitchen Aid Dishwasher Model: KUDS01DLBL0 Serial Number: FM4602333
On January 28th in the evening we left the house and the dishwasher was NOT on; but the dishwasher door was closed. We returned 4.5 hours later and our kitchen smelled like burning plastic. The dishwasher was hot to the touch and the digital display was not working. We opened the door and the heating element was red hot. the plastic cups in the dishwasher were melted. I have saved them as evidence of the event. We immediately unplugged the unit. It cooled down after quite a long time. Had we not returned when we did i am sure we would have had a fire in our kitchen.

No one hurt Made Jan 26, 2012, sent to the company Feb 2, 2012, published by CPSC Feb 16, 2012
The product, in the report: Dishwasher, Whirlpool KitchenAid, Stainless Steel
On January 24, 2012 at approximately 1:12am, the KitchenAid Dishwasher completed a cleaning cycle and had just completed filling the dishwasher for another wash or rinse cycle. Initially it appeared as normal steam that emanates from the unit as it dries dishes. The control panel displayed no indicators normally illuminated. Without any additional indication, the smoke thickened and filled the kitchen and soon thereafter the entire house filled with smoke. TR was awakened at 1:18am by LS. TR manually tripped the circuit breaker at the house’s electrical panel, and the smoke slowly halted its escape from the dishwasher.
The unit was opened on January 25 to determine the source of the smoke before attempting to restart operations. The control board appears to have burned through its connectors, so no restart was attempted. The unit is presumed to be non-functional.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
My kitchenaid dishwasher model KUDS01DJSPO serial number FK3901087 purchased 2001 started sparking with flames shooting out of the top of the unit near the control panel. It happened in the middle of a cycle. I extinguished the flames and shutoff the circuit breaker and called 911. The fire department responded and checked and made sure there were no hotspots in back of the unit or in the surrounding wooden cabinets. We later disconnected the unit, removed it and stored it in the garage with no intention of using it again.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Consumer stated that the door of the dishwasher door broke from the hinges and fell off, the lights on the control panel started illuminating and the water would not drain out of the dishwasher.
2007 Consumer contacted manufacturer and they advised her to contact a retailer that sold the unit and they would pay a portion of the cost if the rep made any repairs.
Consumer had not contacted the manufacturer since that time.
Consumer stated that she had stopped using it because of the problems.
Consumer feels that this dishwasher is a safety hazard and feels that it might pose a fire hazard with the lights coming on and off and the water not being drained. CONSUMER ADDED: In response to the incident the door now is fell of the hinges. Something broke in door which holds door when open like a spring so the door drops or falls all the way down and soap dispenser door won’t open to let the dish detergent release and water won’t fill the tub. I had to self fill with water and soak water out by hand thats why I quiet using it several years ago.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
I have a Kitchen Aid dishwasher that I think is 5 years old. I started a load yesterday 10 min after it started it started putting out a lot of black smoke and smelling like burning plastic. I turned the main power off and the smoke stopped. After it cooled off I took the key pad off to get the stink outside it showed a lot of damage. I believe if I would not have been home it would have been a big fire. Looks to me like the plug in connections got loose and heated up. It is model number 8524569. This is an unsafe product that will burn someone’s house down.

RE: KitchenAid Dishwasher, model#KUDS01DLWH3, serial#FR20003819. Started a “cycle” late in the evening before going to bed. I noticed an odd “hissing” noise emitting from the dishwasher. Suddenly, large amount of smoke were emitted from the top right area of the door/control board area. I immediatley opened the door to stop the cycle. Smoke had filled the kitchen area. Ran to the electrical breaker and cut power. We had family in town for holidays. The smoke and commotion awoke most of our guests. Repairman is due today (1-6-12). Our immediate concerns are, what is to keep this from happening again, once repaired? Is it his an engineering design flaw? We phoned KitchenAid Customer support. They’re response was,”we are unaware of any recalls or actions at this time.” So, in the meantime, how many more households will trust this appliance, as we did, and go to sleep at night? Or perhaps run some errands after starting their dishwashers? It is very clear to me that this product is unsafe! We were appalled at the lack of concern for the consumers safety. If I had not been standing within close proximity of this event, what could have happened? How do we sleep at night knowing that we have an appliance in our home that could potentially harm us? Most importantly, how do we “get the word out” so that other families are made aware of this hidden hazard? At this time, KitchenAid is not offering any explanations, reccomendations, ( other than for us to call a repairman ), or recall of any kind. Have the “best interests” of the consumer been served? Must we rely on the evening news to give us peace of mind? Our understanding of this ongoing issue, is that it has been happening for some time now, and STILL, no word “at this time,” from KitchenAid. Well, it is a sad day indeed, when consumers have a threat like this “dishwasher fire” event, and all you will hear is, “At this time, there is no recall.” Obviously, they can sleep at night. I suspect it is because they do not have this appliance in their homes!

The product is a Kitchenaid Dishwasher Model #KUDI01FLSS5, Serial #FR3307753.
On 1-2-2012 shortly after starting the dishwasher a large plume of smoke came out from the right side door panel vent. I opened the door but the dishwasher continued to run. I then unplugged the unit turning it off. The smoke went away also but filled then entire kitchen with the acrid smell for hours.
I removed the door cover and looked inside of the control panel. The circuit boards were blackened and the dishwasher obviously not able to be used again.
Heard about other problems with Whirlpool dishwasher fires so I thought you should know.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Dishwasher, stainless steel.
We had started the dishwasher as normal. It was the middle of the day. It had been running for about 10 minutes when we noticed black smoke coming out of the right door vent. It smelled like plastic burning. We opened it up and it stopped smoking. We closed it again and we could hear it arcing (shorting out) inside the upper right door. Smoke again started pouring out of the right door vent. We opened it again and cancelled the wash. We took out the screws holding the door panel together and the circuit board in the upper right door had black soot covering the middle where it attaches to the wires leading down into the door.
If we had not been home to stop it, it could have started the kitchen cabinets on fire. It still smells like burnt plastic in the kitchen and it’s been 10 hours later. After searching online I found several other people who had a smilar problem with their dishwasher, which prompted us to file this report.

Running the dishwasher and was ready to walk out the door. Heard a noise -- opened the dishwasher and water was squirting out all over... could not stop it..... smelled smoke. Finally after hitting all the control buttons, finally stopped. I am so fortunate that I was home when this happened.
Called for service and didn’t try using the dishwasher at all.
Service man did inform me that the control panel of the dishwasher did smoke and burnt parts of the dishwasher. Would cost me $777.43 to fix it. Purchased the dishwasher from Sears in October, 2004. Also was charged $129.00 for them to come out.

She opened the door to the dishwasher, the flames disapated, she opened the windows to clear the smoke and her husband shut the breaker off.
Caller contacted manufacturer November 28th, she does not remember who she spoke with but did discontue the call when she believed there was no concern. The manufacturer contact did offer to send repairman at manufacturer expense to identify repair necessary at consumer expense. Consumer declined.
Consumer purchased a new dishwasher, allowed this dishwasher to be taken away however; she saved the circuits in case someone wants to investigate

Kitchenaid Dishwasher Model # KUDP01FLSS6. My door retention cord broke allowing the very heavy door to fly open and hit my elderly mother causing an open wound all down her shin with added bruising which was severe enough that it took her weeks to heal. Separately, we also had to have the repairman out to replace and/or recalibrate the electrical panel at least 6 times, becoming expensive with costly repairs. Eventually, even though the dishwasher was only 3 years old at the time, the repairman said that it would keep happening and informed me to just buy a new dishwasher. This problem began only less than 2 years after purchasing the dishwasher, so didn’t feel as though I should have to buy a new one. We haven’t been able to budget for a new dishwasher, therefore we have elected to just leave this lemon of a dishwasher sit in my kitchen for now.

My Kitchen Aid dishwasher started on fire last night. The control panel was sparking and black smoke was coming from either side. The dishwasher was 3/4 through the cycle and began making a loud noise. I tried to open the dishwasher door to stop the cycle but it would not. I tried to ‘Cancel’ the cycle but it would not stop. Only after turning off the circuit breaker did the dishwasher stop. The burning and noise dissipated after 5 minutes.

We have a Kitchen Aid Dishwasher. My husband smelled something burning from it while I was running a cycle. The machine is now non operable. When looking in in manual it states that the heating circuit is malfunctioning. I was made aware of the current issues that have been happening due to the heating elements catching on fire on the news and realized the potential danger these machines have been causing due to this issue. Unfortunatley my warranty is no longer valid.

The product, in the report: Kitchen aide dishwasher $800.00 Lowes home center, leominster, MA model KUDS30IXBL1 serial number F10206110
Purchased a Kitchen Aide Dishwasher January 2011 for 800.00. I called them on Sept. 23 to tell them that the washer had stopped working. every time i called, i got a hangup, a transfer or someone who would say that they were not sure it was covered.
After two days on the phone I finally got an associate that scheduled an appointment for me with an A&E appliance repair. I was given a date of Sept . 29 between 8am-5pm and was told that the repair center would call me the day before to give me a more precise time.
I waited for the call on September 28 and no call was received. I called kitchen aide back on Sept 30 and got the same run around as before. Until I finally found an associate that said my area is serviced by a company called interstate appliance. She then made an appointment for my service on October 19 which was the earliest she could do, she gave me the phone number to interstate appliance and said to contact them directly and see if I could get a better date for service as they may have can cancellations.
I tried calling Interstate appliance 4 times leaving messages with my phone number however, I received no return phone call. I tried again to call kitchen aide and again I was subjected to the same run-around. And each time, they were checking to see if my unit was still in warranty. I was again rescheduled with interstate appliance and given a date of October 26. unfortunately our area had a sudden snow storm that week and many people and businesses were without power. I however was unaffected by the storm. Again I waited and no call or service was given.
I called kitchen aide November 5, and was told that I was supposed to be serviced by A& E Appliance, however, she could not find a service call for me. She then said I was to be serviced by Interstate appliance and the best date they could give me was November 23. I said that was unacceptable and could they do better. They then told me they had Forrest appliance who could do me on November 16. I was not pleased, but accepted that as the best appointment I could get.
I finally got through to Interstate appliance on November 5. they told me that kitchen aide should have known that my town was not serviced on a Wednesday. But regardless, they were affected by the storm and many customers had to be rescheduled. I asked why I wasn’t notified. I was told that I should have called them to see if they had any scheduling problems. They then rescheduled me to November 16...the same as Forrest appliance. I decided not to cancel any appointment and wait to see if any of the two that were scheduled that day would show up.
On November 15 I calked interstate appliance because I had heard noth8ing, I left my phone number 2 times. I heard nothing from either service company . On November 15 I called kitchen aide and they checked and said they couldn’t get to the service company because it was after 5pm. I was very heated and told the representative that the service was unacceptable and I would be filing a complaint with the BBB if I did not get service ob November 16.
I got a phone call from Forrest appliance on November 15 at 915pm. They scheduled me for 9am the following morning. They apparently had no idea about the service problems I was having.
When the service man arrived. He looked at the unit and said, “with these lights lit like this, it looks like some kind of a short circuit. He then took off the front panel and told me that the circuit board had burned and he would have to order new parts. I was told it would be about another week.
I then read about other short circuit issues that cause d fires. I am hoping that this does not happen, but my unit definitely dis short curcit. And kitchen aide should have been able to tell me that was the issue instead of giving me run around ad keep checking that I was still in warranty. I kind of got the impression that they were waiting until I was out of warranty so they wouldn’t have to take responsibility. My unit is dishwasher model KUDS30IXBL1 serial number F10206110 and was purchased at Lowes home center Leominster, Ma.

Kitchen Aid Dishwasher Model KUDP02CRBL2 SN# FT2801917
During use of the Dishwasher my wife and I noticed a slight burning odor; we were not sure where the burning odor was coming from. After a week or so we found that the dishwasher had over flowed all over the kitchen floor. After cleaning up the flood we used it again and that’s when the burning odor was discovered coming from the dishwasher itself.
I contacted Kitchen Aid / Whirlpool customer service and explained the problem. I was told that the Dishwasher was out of warranty and they would not do anything except to have their service agency come to my home to repair it at very high cost to me.
Being an electronic engineer and owner of [REDACTED] I decided to investigate the cause of this strong burning odor. I found that the circuit board was the cause of the odor, and it was only burning when the dishwasher was being used with high temperature settings. I also noticed that the wiring that went to the main power connections from the internal circuitry has melted.
Kitchen Aid / Whirlpool did nothing to address this reported problem and just said that it was out of warranty. Knowing that reports of their dishwashers going on fire, they should have investigated this problem to prevent possible house fires and injury to occupants, but they just ignored the problem.

We suddenly smelled a strong burning smell and it there was smoke coming from our dishwasher. It was still running but I shut the power off. Then after the power was diconnected I opened up the front panel and found the board burnt up and the plastic enclosure for it melted. One of the line wires going to a connector to the board was burnt up and exposed the bare wire. We were glad we were home at the time of the incident because we were able to shut the power off to it.

On 09/07/2003 we purchased a KitchenAid Dishwasher Ser# FP3414140, Type 577-0, Model# KUDI01ILBL2. We did not experience any problems with the dishwasher until this past Sunday, 10/30/2011 when I turned the machine on and after about 5 minutes it started making a grinding noise and I saw flames and dirty gray smoke coming out of the right side of the dishwasher door. I hit the “cancel” button and this turned off the machine and the flames and smoke stopped. Nothing in my kitchen was damaged. We will be replacing the diswasher. I called KitchenAid at 1-800-422-1230 on Monday, 10/31/2011 and they asked me to allow a service tech to come to the house on this coming Friday, 11/04/2011 to check out the machine. The KitchenAid dishwasher will be taken away when the install on our new dishwasher is done on Saturday, 11/05/2011.
We purchased the KitchenAid Dishwasher from Sears at Golf MIll Center in Niles, IL 847-803- 7500.

I had loaded a batch of dishes into my dishwasher and started it. I went outside and was working in my yard around 4:00 pm. My husband had picked up my daughter from school and brought her home. At approximately 5:00 pm my husband and daughter arrived home. I was still working in the yard. My daughter went into the house and came running out asking me what was burning in the kitchen. I told her that I was not cooking anything and I ran in the house. The kitchen was filled with smoke and there was a terrible chemical smell in the air. We checked all outlets, ovens, cooking appliances, etc. My husband came in and was looking around as well. We started opening up all the windows and covering our noses. My husband went to the dishwasher and noticed that there was some brown markings on the top of the dishwasher and as we looked further, there was a bubbling of the plastic underneath the controls to the dishwasher. The chemical smell and smoke was terrible. I believe that if we had not caught this when we did, we would have been dealing with a fire.

October 5, 2011 - it was late evening when we heard a strange noise coming from the kitchen. When we investigated, there was smoke coming from the dishwasher and spreading into the room. We tried to turn it off but without success, so we had to shut down the power to stop it. By then the burning smell permeated the area and we had to air out the house for hours to even make it breathable. When the repairman came the next day, he discovered the circuit board and associated wiring were completely burned, he took photos as he had never seen such severe damage (he could use them to train new technicians). He didn’t know how far the damage would reach, his advice, put the money into a new dishwasher. We are contacting Kitchenaid as we loved the design and features of this dishwasher, however, the fire concern is real

1. Machine stopped operating on 8/4/11 2. Initial service visit from local KA representative 8/9/11 3. KA diagnosed problem as motor. New motor authorized by KA as per service rep. 4. Second visit to install motor on 8/18/11 5. Machine still shutting down; Service rep contacted 6. Third visit by service rep on 8/24/11 7. KA diagnosed problem as circuit panel (which, according to service rep was the initial problem); KA authorizes order of circuit board 8. Service rep contacted on 9/12/11 since no call received regarding circuit board part 9. Service company advises that part not available from Whirlpool, needs to be manufactured since it is backordered. Part to be shipped on or about 9/16/11, with receipt by local service company in 7-10 business days. Local service company advises that part should be received in late September or early October. 10. New control panel installed on 9/23/11. 11. Load run on 9/26/11. No problems. 12. Load run on 9/29/11. During cycle, very loud rat-a-tat-tat noise heard, which sounded like a snare drum. Electrical “arcing” sound also heard emanating from control panel. Cycle completed. 13. Load run on 10/9/11. Drum-like sound heard again during cycle. In addition, electrical arcing-sound begins, and lasts – off and on –for about 3 minutes, before a burning smell is noticed. Unit shut down for safety purposes. 14. Updated e-mail sent on 10/10/11 to Kitchen Aid 15. No response by 10/13/11, so follow-up e-mail sent 16. Received call from [REDACTED]@ Kitchen Aid on 10/14/11. While using the dishwasher on the normal setting with the high temperature scrub for approximately 15 minutes when she detected a horrible burning electric odor.
She noticed that the dishwasher had stopped operating within 15 minutes after it was being started and she does not recall noticing any smoke coming from the appliance.
The cycle stopped directly in the midst of the rinse cycle so she used a wet dry vacuum to get the water out of the machine,
When she was able to take a closer look she noticed that the vent on located on the front of the dishwasher near the control panel had the electrical burning odor coming from it.
The consumer’s husband is an electrician by trade and took the control panel a part and noticed that circuit board had caught fire.
The firm has not been contacted but she plans on contacting them. She has not used the dishwasher since the failure occurred and has unplugged the appliance from the wall outlet.

The product, in the report: black under the counter dishwasher
On September 29, 2011, a few minutes after turning on my KitchenAid dishwasher, I smelled burning from wires. I opened the dishwasher and saw smoke. I checked inside the dishwasher for any items on the heating coil or for any visibly melted items. I turned it back on briefly. I could smell the fire in the upper right hand corner of the dishwasher door.
After finding that there has been reports by googling the problem on the web, I called KitchenAid. I wanted someone to come to see the problem, but they would only send a repairman at cost to me. I told them I was not getting it repaired and wanted someone to just see that the dishwasher was a fire hazard. They would not do that.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher
Our KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KUDS01FLSS5 purchased 11/2004 caught on fire while running. We heard some loud “popping” noises and went to the Kitchen to investigate. The dishwasher was smoking. Sparks and flames were coming from the upper right side of the door. We pressed the cancel button but the unit kept running and smoke/sparks/flames kept coming from the unit. We turned off the circuit breaker for the dishwasher and the unit shut down. Damage was limited to the dishwasher. A service technician was sent to our house and he determined that the units control panel circuit board had failed and caught on fire. This issue, to my surprise, DOES NOT appear to be isolated. Many cases are documented at kitchaidfire.com. This is a very dangerous situation.

Started dishwasher for a normal wash cycle at approximately 7:25 a.m. Was getting ready for work and oldest daughter was waiting getting ready to leave for school. When my daughter walked in the kitchen to get her last items for her school bag she began screaming MOM, MOM, the dishwasher is on fire. I immediately ran to the kitchen and saw a thick black smoke and large frame exiting from the control panel at the top of the dishwasher. Had the children go outside and immediately called the fire department. Managed to open the dishwasher door letting it fall hoping it would stop the power supply. Water was splashing out as the cycle was still running. The smell of burning plastic was terrible. The fire appears to have started in the electrical control panel/display. This unit was serviced by A&E Factory Service on numerous occassions and this area was worked on in October 2010 replacing the console insert, board, panel-cntl., and act ovlay on an extended warranty. There were no physical injuries only the emotional trama of the girls. Thank goodness I hadn’t left yet for work and learned a valuable lesson not to run appliances if I am not at home.

Also after 10 visits from the repairman, yes I said 10, Numerous electrical problems are known with this unit making it a fire hazard. I had in excess of 12 mother boards replaced at 100 a piece and the entire wiring harness of which each showed severe burn marks on them. This was in addition to every other working part on the dishwasher itself. I know you dont investigate Lemon Law issues but, this is beyond that and is a safety hazard especially for small children or elderly with the weight of the door and everyone else due to the fire hazard.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher Model: KUDS01FLSS6 Serial Number: FR4614215 Color: Stainless Steel
We purchased a KitchenAid (Whirlpool) Dishwasher (Model: KUDS01FLSS6, Ser No: FR4614215) on April 19, 2005.
On August 31, 2010, my wife and I heard a popping noise from our kitchen. It happened again and we smelled smoke. We rushed into the kitchen to find smoke billowing out of the dishwasher. I opened the door and the smoke was coming out of the right-side door vent. I pushed the Cancel button, left the door open, and aired out the kitchen. Luckily we were home, as our kitchen cabinets would have caught fire.
We had a repairman come out and give us a $400 estimate to replace the control panel and accompanying fuse. I bought the parts online, instead, for $80 and installed them myself. The dishwasher tries to work now, but stops mid-cycle with the 7 blinking lights, showing a heat sensor malfunction. Another repairman came out twice (for $85) to fix it, said I had installed the parts correctly, and left shrugging his shoulders. He said there’s nothing wrong with it...just doesn’t work. Nice

I turned on my KitchenAid dishwasher, model# KUDS01IJBLO, and 7-10 minutes later it made a clicking sound and then a loud popping sound. I went over to see what was wrong and it started pouring flames out of the top of the door over where the circuit board is located. The display went out and I quickly opened the door to stop the cycle. I grabbed a box of baking soda and doused the flames with it which did put them out. Then very black thick smoke was pouring out of the top where the flames had been. My son ran to the basement and cut the power to the dishwasher and the smoke continued to pour out that I thought it would catch fire again. My entire downstairs smelled of an electrical fire for days. I found out that KitchenAid has known about this problem, but has made a conscious decision not to do anything about it. My house could’ve easily burned down had I no been RIGHT THERE in the kitchen - it happened so fast.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid built in Dishwasher - Model Number KUDS01FLSS
We have a KitchenAid Diswasher purchased in October of 2004. It is listed with a model number of KUDS01FLSS. This past Monday evening (August 29, 2011) it started on fire, spontaneously emitting smoke and flames.
The dishwasher had been turned on before retiring for bed and was running for about 40 minutes when I heard an unusual noise from the machine. I went to check on it in the kitchen a few moments later, and there was an odd burning smell and a significant amount of smoke coming out from the right side of the door. I quickly opened the door in a panic. A lot of water sprayed out (as it appears that the machine was still running) and a flame shot out as well. Thankfully, the water put out the flames quickly. The smoke and flames stopped shortly after the door was opened and the machine stopped running. We are assuming it was a hidden electronic panel in the door that melted or caught fire, but we cannot be sure.
My husband called KitchenAid the following day to report this, and the representative indicated they did not know anything about any problems with thier dishwashers. They did offer a 15% discount on another Kitchenaide machine, however, right now we are too frightened to buy another Kitchenaide dishwasher. We have children, and are horrified to think what would have occurred had I not seen the problem quickly and shut the machine off.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
The consumer had the home built and the builder purchased the dishwasher in April of 2003 but she is unaware of where it was purchased from. The dishwasher was placed on the light and heated dry cycle and half way through the cycle when she noticed black and brown smoke coming from the control panel and there was a terrible plastic burning odor.
Within in a matter of minutes the right hand side of the control panel caught fire. She attempted to power the unit in the off position but it would not power off. There was a toggle switch under the kitchen sink that was pulled to power the unit in the off position and the circuit breaker was also powered in the off position to cease all power. Once the all power was ceased the flames went out and shortly after the smoke dissipated.
On 8/9/2011 the consumer’s husband removed the control panel and noticed that all the wires and circuit boards were burned and melted together. The same date the dishwasher was removed from the home by a retailer that the consumer purchased a new dishwasher from. The consumer kept the control panel and also has pictures of the unit.
On 8/12/2011 the firm was contacted in regards to the fire that started inside of the dishwasher the representative that the consumer spoke with [REDACTED] advised the consumer that they would have replace the dishwasher free at charge.
Kitchen Aid representative contacted consumer on Monday 8/15/2011 and offered consumer $100 towards purchase of a new [REDACTED] dishwasher. In return, they requested a copy of the Bill of Sale for the new machine and the Burnt Up Control Panel. Consumer has decided to keep the control panel in their possession until they hear from CPSC. They will keep this panel for at least the recommended 30 days.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
On Sunday, July 11, 2011 my wife and I were home and my wife had started the KitchenAid Dishwasher Model, KUD01FLBLO; Serial FM 3901236. During its cycle a strong smell of overheated electric or plastic components charring began to permeate the house. We searched throughout the house for the source of the smell, on re-entry the kitchen and seeing smoke we identified the dishwasher as the source. As the controls on the unit would not function, I turned the circuit breaker to the unit off. Upon investigation by doing some disassembly, the control module was found to be heavily blackened and evidence of extreme heat was noted on the control board. Three wire harness connectors were charred and the control enclosure was fused to the underlying mounting structure. I contacted the manufactures support service and relayed the problem to their attention. A service call was arranged and the service technician identified repairs as 1, Sub-Fuse; 1, Control-Elec; and 1, Wire Harness. Total service cost was estimated at $428.96. At the time I refused further service due to the cost. Subsequently I did some further investigation and found the parts list with those components their numbers are Sub-Fuse; 8269213, Control-Electronic; 8528874, and Wire Harness; 8269191. I further note the technician noted that factory replacements were not available for the control board, but remanufactured boards would be used. As I have some knowledge of manufacturing, I found it curious that only a remanufactured board was available. I am now left to question was the board a potential defective design and redesigned to eliminate a potential problem? If so were defective boards left in service? I called the KitchenAid Support Group and the only answer I could obtain is that the dishwasher is not on the recall list and customer complaints are company confidential. I would like your comments on complaints in your files on this problem. From the amount of charring and discoloration, the potential for a kitchen fire seems to be real.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid dishwasher.
My mother was unloading the dishwasher and bumped her shin on the corner of the door, peeling off a large area of skin. She cleaned and bandaged the wound. Almost three weeks later, the wound became infected, and she went to a walk-in clinic, where she was given prescriptions for two oral antibiotics, and two antibiotic injections. Two or three days later, the infection appeared worse, so she went to the ER. They referred her to a wound clinic, where she was seen the next day. She is receiving ongoing treatment at the wound clinic.

I own a kitchenaid dishwasher model KUDI02IR which just started to smoke during a normal wash cycle- it smelled like an electrical fire coming from the control panel.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid dishwasher, white and built-in (i.e. undercounter)
My wife [REDACTED] started our dishwasher and then went upstairs to take a shower. When she was finished with her shower, and opened the bathroom door, she smelled a strong odor of something burning. She went downstairs, and noticed that the dishwasher’s display was blank, there was a black smoke mark on the front edge of our countertop directly above the dishwasher’s door, and the front top of the dishwasher’s door (i.e. the console assembly cover) was burnt. Upon further inspection, she noticed that the plastic faceplate was distorted, and the gasket between the plastic faceplate and the stainless steel dishwasher door was burnt and melted. When I got home that evening, I removed the front cover of the dishwasher’s door to see what was wrong. I discovered that the circuit board behind the console assembly cover was charred, there were several burnt components, a fair amount of melted plastic, and even some of the wiring harnesses were burnt. There was also black soot deposited on the inside of the plastic cover, and part of the cover itself was burnt.
My wife did a brief search on the internet, and discovered a lot of postings about a possible design defect with this particular model of KitchenAid dishwasher causing similar problems. As an electrical engineer and circuit designer myself, given the fairly large number of reported problems, I do believe that there is likely some latent design or component defect that’s causing these issues. When I opened the cover, there was no trace of any water leaking in; although it’s possible that water may have initiated this problem and the heat from the ensuing burning components & plastic caused it to evaporate. The damage to the dishwasher was fairly extensive, so much so that we will have to replace it.
The reason I’m submitting this report is that I believe that this particular product could well be dangerous. We were lucky that my wife was at home at the time and the burning was contained to just the dishwasher itself. However, we often turn the dishwasher on late at night before going to bed. Given the extent of the damage inside the dishwasher and the size of the burn mark on our kitchen counter, I could imagine similar instances of dishwasher failures causing a fire, particularly if there happened to be anything flamable on the countertop directly above the middle of the dishwasher door.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher KUDS01DLSS1, serial number FM5202184
KitchenAid dishwasher Model KUDS01DLSS1, Serial # FM5202184 I called KitchenAid on May 24th, 11:27 am to report that my diswasher door came crashing down, I tripped over it and went head first into a lower kitchen cabinet door (which I must now order a replacement door from Home Depot for). Also, the dishwasher will no longer run, after pressing begin on the control panel, the bottom of machine will fill with water, but will not enter a cleaning cycle. The dishwasher just hums. The customer service told me there was no recall and that there were no other complaints made on this unit. She said I was on my own to schedule and pay for repair. I then searched on the computer for other and found site after site of complaints from consumers for both the broken door issue and humming/no cycle issue.

My wife went to oped the door to empty the dishwasher and the spring that helps control the weight of the door broke, causing the door to fall open suddenly with no aid from the door springs, hitting her on the leg, knocking her down. Our little 4 year old neice was helping with the dishes, standing nearby and could have been hit on the head by the door and been hurt.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
KitchenAid dishwasher MODEL # KUDP01FLBT5 In service for approximately 5 years with no problems prior to this incident.
Black smoke and burning plastic smell filled house. Upon returning home within a half an hour after dishwasher was started, we found smoke and arcing coming from dishwasher control panel. I immediately turned off the dedicated circuit breaker. After opening the windows to clear the smoke, I disassembled the front panel and found the electronic control assembly AP3775964 badly burned, wire connectors to this board melted, and plastic housing burned and partly melted. Also, the user interface AP3177796 was blackened and partly burned along with the fuseable link.
My question is: Why didn’t the fuseable link within the dishwasher disconnect the power upon this severe electronic failure?
I looked at replacement parts costs, totaling more that $175, and found that Whirlpool (maker of KitchenAid) replaced the fuseable link with a “fuse kit” AP3178588. This kit has the installer relocate the fuseable link to lower location in the dishwasher. Was this a known problem with this unit that caused my incident?
