The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller is reporting her dishwasher that was in her home when she moved into it in February 2012 caught fire on October 3rd, 2013. Caller was in her kitchen with the dishwasher that had been running approximately 40 minutes on normal cycle, energy saver dry modes. She said that one second all was fine then the next there was very heavy black smoke coming from the door of the dishwasher. The caller ran to get her husband who turned off the circuit breaker, unplugged the dishwasher and opened the door to the dishwasher. They opened doors and windows to air the house out.
Caller contacted the manufacturer Friday, October 4th, 2013 to file report with them. The Manufacturer referred her to their safety department and advised that they would send someone out to check and repair it. Tech came to caller’s house Monday, October 7th, 2013, inspected the dishwasher, said that circuit board had caught fire and that it had nothing to do with her but that these incidents happen.
There are no injuries being reported

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The Kitchen Aid Dishwasher purchased in 2010 caught fire burning the control panel. The unit continued to run after the cycles were over and we have had to turn the breaker off leading to the unit or it will just continue to run and burn. After looking into this product is seems there has been a class action lawsuit filed against the company because of the thousands of complaints and their refusal to recall the product.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Model KUDP01ILWH2, Serial # FP3909822 (with EnergyStar rating). This unit is an under-counter model for permanent installation. Door color is white, and unit has a stainless steel inner body. Manufacture date unknown. Unit *was* in nearly daily use and in very good to excellent condition.
Our dishwasher (KitchenAid Model KUDP01ILWH2, Serial # FP3909822) was in use during the early afternoon of 12 July 2013. I was at a business meeting and my teenage son was home. Partway through the cycle, my son heard noises while he was in the Family Room, which is adjacent to the Kitchen. As he began to look for the source of the sounds, he noticed smoke accumulating in the Kitchen and Family Room area. Upon further investigation, he noticed smoke coming from the dishwasher. He called me on the phone at my meeting and advised the dishwasher was smoking. No flames were observed, but he did hear noises.
As he opened the door to stop the cycle, the machine continued to operate; the cycle did not stop as was expected. I instructed him turn off the dishwasher at the local disconnect switch by the kitchen sink. When he did so, the dishwasher did stop operating. My son opened the house to air out the plastic smell (and also removed our pets, including his leopard gecko, which is very sensitive to smoke).
Discoloration and distortion of the plastic housing on the door of the dishwasher can be clearly seen in the vicinity of the control panel. The dishwasher door has discoloration above and below the control panel (see photos provided), and there is a “bubble” in the door plastic that has formed below the controls. The “bubble” is approximately the size of a U.S. nickel (5-cent piece).
The unit remains powered off and is no longer used. The unit’s door has *not* been opened to view the actual control panel, but the access panel to water and electrical supplies has been removed (below the door) in preparation of either repair or removal.

The product, in the report: Black KitchenAid Superba dishwasher
We have a KitchenAid Superba dishwasher where we had just started a normal load of dishes for the day. I happened to smell something odd, turned around and noticed there was both smoke and a flame shooting out of the right hand side of the control panel. I immediately opened the door to stop the cycle. After validating there was no damage beyond the dishwasher, I tripped the isolated breaker to the unit. I immediately began an online investigation of our model, only to discover this appears to be more of a problem than it should be

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
July 17th, 2013 this caller smelled a burning odor coming from his kitchen. He went to the kitchen, thought it was the coffeepot so picked it up and took it outside with his wife. The couple decided that the coffee pot had not been burning but the wife remembered that she had started the dishwasher before she came outside which prompted both the caller and his wife to return to the kitchen.
They had the carpets cleaned this same day so all fans were running which makes it impossible for the caller to distinguish whether there was smoke. They went immediately to the dishwasher, saw that it was not running, opened the door and were met with a terrible odor but could not visually identify any problem. He compares the burning odor to that of burning hot wire. He took the front panel off of the dishwasher to access the control panel and observed where smoke had come out from around the panel, circuit board connectors were melted, the circuit board was charred and melted as well as the underneath of the circuit board being charred and melted. The underside of his countertop is burned from the heat. Caller said that it appears that the thermal switch did not work at all because the breaker didn’t trip off, the burning continued when it should have been blocked.
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them., There are no injuries to be reported.
Caller is asking that his model become inspected and repaired at manufacture expense and if he has had to have the unit repaired then he would like to be reimbursed whatever the cost was with this cost being placed at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KUDI01ILBL5
While on vacation, our house sitter decided to do a load of dishes. Within a few minutes of the load starting, smoke began to pour from the dishwasher. After selecting “Cancel”, she opened the door to stop the cycle from running. The dishwasher did not stop running, spraying water all over the kitchen while flames and sparks shot out of the front panel. She then closed the door at which time the “Cancel” worked by stopping the cycle and draining the dishwasher. She then turned the power off at he breaker panel.
If this had happened as usual (starting the cycle as we are leaving for the day to work), our house would have surely burnt to the ground.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid dishwasher (model KUDE20IXBL8).
Defect in the top rack of a 13-month-old Kitchen Aid dishwasher (model KUDE20IXBL8).
When I pulled the top rack out to unload it, the left side collapsed without any warning, spilling dishes and glasses down onto the crockery in the bottom rack and out onto the floor.
When I looked for the cause, it was obvious that one of the two flimsy plastic “spring” pegs that retain each wheel of the upper rack on its axle had broken. This allowed the wheel to pull off the axle and thereby allow the entire left side of the top rack to collapse. It seems to me the axles on the rack adjuster (Part number W10350376) are very poorly designed and is not made as solidily as the wheels on the lower rack. This is despite the fact that both upper and lower racks are of the same dimensions and, so to me as an average consumer, both should be able to support a full load of dishes.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
My wife set our dishwasher, turned it on and left for work. I came home from work about an hour later to find the kitchen full of nauseating, noxious fumes. I localized the source as the dishwasher and discovered it to be completely dead and still full of water and dirty dishes. I turned off the circuit breaker and opened all the windows and doors to try and clean out the stench. I then called the Kitchen Aid Extended Service Plan representative and explained what I had found. They scheduled a service tech to come to the house the next day.
The service technician determined that the circuit board and associated components had burnt up and since the warranty company could not be reached Saturday, he would have someone come back the Following Monday...today. That technician made the same determination and stated that the unit could not be repaired but that it needed replaced and that the warranty company would call to arrange the replacement. The warranty company would not replace the unit and stated that it was at their discretion to offer a check for a depreciated amount and that I should go to Best buy and use that toward the purchase of a new unit.
I mentioned the information about all the other examples of this type of situation happening to others and they disavowed any knowledge...even though they are a “partner” of Whirlpool and Sear Holding.
I cannot tell you all that was damaged but can assure you that the circuit board and wiring were overheated and burnt as I could see the charred circuit board, melted wires and melted plastic.

My KitchenAid dishwasher, model #KUDS01ILWH2, caught on fire today. The computer area and front cover melted. It had been running for about 5 minutes when black sooty smoke and sparks started shooting out of the front cover. I turned it off and opened the door. Water and flames shot out. I closed the door, turned off the circuit breaker and stood ready with a fire extinguisher until my husband arrived minutes later. Thank goodness I was home. After the cleanup and remove of the appliance, I went to the internet and found that there have been many complaints similar to my own. This product is a hazard to family safety! Please look into this and find out what is going on! Why is there not a warning out and a recall activated??

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Dishwasher
Our Kitchenaid dishwasher caught fire in the door of the dishwasher. Just before I was heading to bed I noticed smoke coming from the door and a melted plastic smell. I quickly turned off the power at the breaker panel, stopping the dishwasher. In the morning I opened the door and found the circuit board melted down. It appears to have started at pin where wire goes out to the heating element. This was completely melted and charred together with many other components including the protective box and the inside of the door. If I was not present the house would have burned down and someone may have been killed.

On 3/23/2013 our KitchenAid dishwasher caught fire. We were fortunately in the kitchen at the time and acted quickly enough to prevent damage beyond the dishwasher. If we had not been there to observe the fire, the outcome could have been much worse.
Model: KUDS01FLSS5 SERIAL NUMBER: FR2301497
The alarming thing was that the internal fire in the control board disabled the controls so that opening the door did not stop the dishwasher from running. Water spewed out of the machine when the door was opened; that’s not a good thing to happen with an electrical fire. We had to run to the main panel and shut off the power.
These products should be taken off the market until they redesign the control circuitry.

On 3/5/2013 I started my dishwasher. About 10 minutes later, I noticed a strong burning plastic smell. When I went into my kitchen it was filled with smoke. I opened the dishwasher and there was a lot of smoke coming out of the top of the dishwasher door. I have turned off the circut breaker to the unit. If we had not been home at the time, my house could have burnt down.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid dishwasher Model KUDS01FLSS6
Our Kitchen Aid dishwasher (model KUDS01FLSS6) started smoking last night about 15 minutes after we started it and were just getting to bed. Fortunately we were not asleep but smelled smoke. Smoke was coming out of the top right corner of the door (where the top control touch pad is located). Fortunately there were no flames. However, the unit did not turn off when I opened the door (sprayed water out into the kitchen), and it would not turn off when I hit the cancel button. All the while it just keeps smoking. The only way to get it turned off was to flip the circuit breaker on the electrical panel downstairs. I took the unit apart tonight and found the circuit board beneath the touch pad control to be badly burnt . Several of the electrical connector plugs to this board were also melted. We purchased the unit in March of 2005 so it is almost 8 years old. But it shouldn’t be catching on fire. This is a major safety issue and apparently we are not the first to have this problem (have read at least 400 incidents reported as of 2012). Fortunately, our kitchen cabinets didn’t catch fire. I called Kitchen Aid and they are sending someone out to fix it (apparently free of charge), but I’m leary of having the same thing happen again. Any advice? Will all [REDACTED], Kitchen AId, & [REDACTED] dishwashers have the same problem?

Last week our 7.5 year old Kitchenaid dishwasher sparked and started smoking during the wash cycle. It is model # KUDIO01DLBT, serial # FS0203251 type 577-0. The smoke smelled like burned plastic and lasted about 5 minutes. My husband turned off the curcuit breaker, then we called the appliance store where we purchased it the next morning and a repair man. The appliance store said they never heard of a dishwasher catching fire, but the repair man sayshe see this all the time with all appliances. the repair man had to replace the circuit board and the melted connectors, some wires and a new fuse later, it started working. The repair man said not to bother calling Kitchenaid because it will not do anything with it, anyway. So I decided to just report the incident, to see if other have had the same experience with Kitchaid like we had.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Dishwasher
I started my dishwasher on a quick wash cycle around 11PM on Friday, December 21. Normally I would go to bed but happened to stay up for a few minutes and it was fortunate that I did. Within a few minutes I heard a strange noise, clicking sound coming from the dishwasher, when I looked at it a flash and spark came out around the power button and smoke started coming out of the front control panel. I tried to turn off but an orange flame appeared. I yelled for my son to turn off the breaker which he did. The smoke was an acrid, electrical and plastic burning smell. It was so strong we had to open the window and doors for a half hour to get it out of the house. The smell still lingered in the kitchen for a few days. Since the dishwasher was 10 years old I did not call for repair, it was also the weekend before Christmas and I needed to have a dishwasher for Christmas day. I quickly bought another and had it installed Christmas Eve. My son took the control panel apart and it had clearly burned and melted inside. I decided to check the internet to see if this had happened before and was astounded to see many reports at kitchenaidfire.com that described exactly what happened to my dishwasher. This could have caused serious damage or injury if I had been in bed or not in the house when this occurred. We have disposed of the dishwasher but do have the burned control panel.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
The consumer says that the dishwasher was on for about ten minutes when the control board caught on fire. The consumer says the power distribution connector caught fire and melted the circuit board. It melted thru the fire resistance enclosure.
The consumer says that the manufacturer has stated on there web site that the fire issue is due to water infiltration. he states that this is not what happened in this instance.
The consumer has been in the engineering profession for about 23 years.
UPDATE: “I am an electrical engineer and former engineering executive. I am very familiar with product safety testing and fault analysis. In my professional opinion, the fault clearly occurred in the power distribution connector section of the control circuit board. I fire was hot enough to breach the flame retardant plastic enclosure below the printed circuit board. If I were not present at home at the time, it is likely that the fire would have rapidly spread. “

We started the dishwasher and a while later there was smoke and fire billowing from the door vent. I shut it down and aired out the house and unplugged it. Usually we start the dishwasher before bed or before leaving the house for the day for work. I can’t imagine what would have happened under such circumstances. Lucklily we were home and could quickly intervene.

I recently badly injured my left lower leg when I accidentally hit the sharp edge of a lowered dishwasher door. My doctors told me that this was a common accident. i am now undergoing plastic surgery to repair my wound. On looking up the leg injury statistics: on “HOSPITAL-DATA.COM”, I find that for the years 1997-2010, there were 16,164 dishwasher lower leg injuries.
I would suggest that these huge number of leg injuries caused by accidentally striking lowered kitchen dishwasher doors be reviewed by the Consumer Products Safety Commission in view of remediating this hazard.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
(7/19/2012) The consumer set her dishwasher on normal wash cycle and proceeded to other household necessities. Approximately 5 to 10 minutes later, the consumer started to smell a burning odor. She immediately opened the door to the dishwasher, but didn’t see anything unusual so she closed the door back. Within 2 to 3 minutes after closing the door, she saw smoke and flames coming from the right hand side of the dishwasher. She immediately opened the door again and tried to hit the cancel button, but it didn’t work. Leaving the door ajar, the water from the wash cycle was still running when she opened the door and it eventually put the flames out.
(7/19/12012) The manufacturer was contacted and a Rep. (name unknown) took a report (number not given). She was then transferred to the safety department. A Rep. from the safety department scheduled an appointment for technician [REDACTED] (last name unknown) from an authorized dealer to come out and inspect the unit at their expense.
(7/24/2012) Technician, [REDACTED] (last name unknown) arrived and inspected the unit. He diagnosed the problem as being the control unit and touch panel ribbon which relays the information had been burned severely. The technician advised her that he would get back with her on an estimate and how much the total cost would be.
The consumer felt that the dishwasher is a fire hazard and could’ve potentially burned her home down. She would like the company to repair it for free. [REDACTED] advised her that the company only covered the inspection for today (7/24/2012) and that she would have to discuss that with the manufacturer.

(7/17/2012) The consumer was using her dishwasher on the normal setting. It ran for approximately 10 minutes when she started to hear an odd noise coming from it. She turned to see what it was and saw a flash (spark) coming from the unit. Within seconds the unit started to emit smoke. The consumer immediately opened the door to let the smoke out.
Once the door was open she began to hear crackling noises (as if something were on fire) that lasted for approximately 10 minutes. The consumer believed that the fire may have started from inside the door towards the top of the unit. The consumer did not know how to unplug the unit so she went downstairs to trip the circuit breakers.
The consumer stated that she has had the dishwasher repaired approximately 5 times prior, but for different reasons. She has spent approximately $500 in repairs.
The manufacturer was not contacted, but will be at a later time.
After searching the Internet the consumer saw that there were numerous complaints on this particular brand and model with the same issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid under the counter dishwasher with stainless steel interior
In April 2011, my dishwasher stopped working. There had been a “hot” smell in the kitchen that I hadn’t associated to the dishwasher until we looked at the control board and wiring. There was a brown spot on the control board indicative of overheating; some of the wires had bare spots on them and a plastic guard / plate was melted to the shape of the wires.
I contacted KitchenAid and said that I was concerned that this was a safety issue; it seems to me that an electrical overload that doesn’t throw a fuse or have some other safeguard but instead allows overheating and melting of wires / plastic is a concern. They sent a repair person out to evaluate but did not cover the cost of any repairs as it was out of warranty and not a safety or fire hazard. I told them I could fix the appliance, but the root cause would not have been addressed.
They told me in an e-mail that “we cannot explain what factors have contributed to your concern since no recalls or known issues are present with this model” and “because there was no fire or smoke, this is not considered a safety issue at this time”.
Now - a year later - the board has again failed. Again, they will not acknowledge any quality issues or safety concerns with this product.
There have been several reports on your site and others for KitchenAid dishwashers, some with actual fires reported so I guess we were lucky; but perhaps the models use a similar design and share components.

They both walked through the kitchen, trying to locate which appliance it may have been coming from. It was indeed the dishwasher. The consumer immediately opened the door and saw smoke coming from the control panel. He ran upstairs to shut off the circuit breakers, not knowing whether a fire may occur.
(7/10/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and the consumer spoke with a rep. (name unknown) from the service center. The rep. informed him that there were not aware of any issues with the brand or that particular model. The consumer then asked to speak with a supervisor. The consumer was transferred to the safety department. While on the line with the safety department, they took his report and set up an appointment for a technician to come out to his home and inspect the unit. The appointment was set for Friday, July 12, 2012.

The control box was melted completely. The manufacturer sent out a technician on 7-5 and the tech said it was the worst one they’ve ever seen. The manufactured offered the consumer $300 for the unit. There was no other damage done in his home beyond the dishwasher. The company wants the dishwasher before they will give the money. They don’t want anyone else to get dishwasher. Consumer feels they are trying to cover up the problem.

Kitchen Aid Dishwasher caught fire at control panel and filled kitchen with smoke
After dinner, callers loaded dishwasher, went outside for approximately 40 minutes then returned to the kitchen that was now filled with smoke. She and her husband immediately began opening windows at the same time her husband turned the breaker off.
The dishwasher remains disconnected due to caller’s fear of potential fire hazard. The consumer added that they contacted Kitchen Aid. A technician was sent to diagnose the problem. He checked and found the control and panel melted and burnt and e fuse still closed. “We realize how fortunate we were. This event could have been disastrous. There were no injuries and no property damage. We paid a “$500.00 participation fee” for a replacement.
The fact remains that there is a problem, not just with short lived appliances, but with these products that have an unreasonable risk of burning. Someone could have been seriously injured or died. Any know risk deserves a warning.
Caller has had this dishwasher repaired twice at her own cost. She paid over a thousand dollars five years ago.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The consumer stated that she was not experiencing any problems with the dishwasher prior to these two incidents.
On 4/8/12 the consumer started the wash cycle and it was running fine. She was in the kitchen ten minutes later (ten minutes into the dishwailling cycle) and smelled smoke. It was immediately discovered that it was coming from the dishwasher. When the door of the dishwasher was opened, smoke poured into the kitchen. The consumer’s husband immediately shut down the power to the kitchen island at the point of the main circuit breaker in the basement.
4/9/12 the manufacturer was contacted and the consumer was advised that a service rep would be sent out, without a charge, to the consumer.
On 4/12/12 a service rep visited and dismantled the door panel to reveal an electronic control board that was melted and burned. The service rep said he was authorized to replace the burned out control board in the door without charging the consumer any of the costs. Prior to this service call, the consumer had researched and learned of numerous problems with the electrical control units (including a class action lawsuit for the exact electrical board of the same model KitchenAid dishwasher) and therefore insisted that the same control panel unit would not be acceptable. The service rep provided the different part nmaber, with different number of digits (compared to the part number of the first control panel), and stated that he was certain that the part was from a different manufacturer. The control panel was replaced with the new part.
6/28/12 (ten weeks later) the dishwasher was run in the morning, unloaded and sitting empty (and ofT) for hours. In the middle of the day, the consumer again smelled smoke, and through searching the house, again discovered that the dishwasher was emitting smoke. Again, the circuit breaker was shut down at the main control panel and again the manufacturer was contacted. This time, the consumer stated that she would not allow for any parts to be swapped out. The manufacturer stated they would agree to pro-rate the cost of the seven year old dishwasher and provide the consumer that money in the form of credit toward another Kitchen Aid dishwasher. The consumer declined th.e offer. The company arranged for a service rep to visit the home and look at the dishwasher.
On 7/6/1.2 a different service rep (from a different company) came to the house and dismantled the door and discovered that the new electrical control panel had two areas of melted wires and the heat/fire had burned the insulation casing across from the wire bundles. The service rep explained that “this is how they’re made” and that it’s “because of all the heat” normally generated during the wash cycle. The consumer questioned the logic of a design that would cause the wires to burn during the normal functioning. The service rep then suggested instead that it “was an act of God” and. recommended that he be allowed to simply replace the electrical control board (this time there was a charge for that service). The consumer declined to allow the service rep to do anything and he left.
Several calls have been made to the KitchenAid company, by the consumer and her husband. No response has been received.

After starting my Kitchenaid dishwasher it ran for about 5 minutes. Then it turned off and made a very strange noise. I went to the adjoining room to tell my son and upon returning to the kitrchen smoke was billowing from the openings at the top of the front panel. It exuded a horrid odor. I opened the dishwasher and my son blasted the interior with the contents of our fire extinguisher while I flipped the circuitbreaker. It was very frightening as we were concerned that our entire house could have caught on fire. Fortunately, I happened to walk by to hear the noise and had not gone to bed which I have so often done. The product, in the report: Black dishwasher
I set my dishwasher to run as usual in the late evening. I went downstairs to watch tv. About 15 minutes later I asked my husband if he could smell electrical burning. He did, so we both went running upstairs to thinking it was a new box fan we had just purchased. What we found was smoke pouring out of the dishwasher from behind the upper right hand corner where the start and stop buttons are located. I tried pushing the stop button only to find it unresponsive. I noticed that it felt hot and then saw there was a quarter sized bubble protruding from the front panel immediately under the stop button, it was extremely hot and soft to the touch. At this point we try opening the dishwasher to get it to stop and it stays powered on, spraying wont stop, smoke still streaming out. I grab our fire extinguisher hand it to my husband to stand by while I run to the breaker panel to try and cut power. I try the first three breakers labeled kitchen, no luck. I run back up to check to see if it worked, then run back down to look at breakers, I notice there is a single breaker with a different Label for dishwasher, off. That works to power it off and smoke slows down. We decide to turn it back on to see if we can get it to drain, we get it to drain. My husband opens the door to check and see if the draining is complete. That is when the fire flash of flame comes out of the right side, then about 2 seconds later a larger flash of flame, soccer ball size, happens. That is when I fly back downstairs and hit the breaker again. This slows smoke and stops fire. The kitchen reeks of electrical fire two days later as I write this. The dishwasher needs to be replaced and smells awful still. It is a kitchen aid, model KUDP01DLBL5 serial number FR2701257 Also says type 577-0. It was purchased before we bought this house. I have paperwork showing that the warranty ran out August 2005.
I hope this is enough information to be helpful. We are very thankful that we were awake when this happened instead of it being in the middle of the night when I usually run it. We were lucky, but I don’t want something to happen to someone else.
Sincerely,

At approx. 0930 on June 22nd, 2012 while in the kitchen working on my laptop I heard a strange noise coming from my operating Kitchenaid (Model:KUDSO1DLBL2, Serial:FP2601372) dishwasher. The noise sounded like electrical wiring arching and was followed by an massive amount of smoke coming from the top right corner of the dishwasher door (near the LED Display). I ran over to the dishwasher and pushed the power button on the dishwasher however, the dishwasher continued to arch and smoke and the LED display would not go off. At that point I ran over to the circuit breaker box and disconnected power to the dishwasher by flipping the breaker to off. Dishwasher continued to smoke approx. 5 mins after power was interrupted.

We started our Kitchenaid KUDP01ILWH dishwasher serial number FR2702023 (purchased in 11/20/2004). A few minutes later we smelled a strong odor of plastic burning. My wife opened the door to see if something had fallen into the heating element. When she opened the door the diswasher was still filled with water and black smoke was coming out from behind the control panel. I pulled the plug on the dishwasher and the smoking stopped. The right side of the control panel was hot to the touch. Had we started the dishwasher a few minutes later and then went to church like we normally do, we could have had a house fire.

Turned on Kitchenaid Dishwasher model number KUDP01ILBL3 Sunday afternoon. After about five minutes, a terrible burning smell filled the kitchen - smelled like electrical wires burning. Turned it off, allowed it to drain (by pushing cancel button), A little later we tried again and had same result. Appears to be a fire hazard. Checked online and found a class action lawsuit -- several people have already experienced fires with the KUDPO series of Kitchenaid Dishwashers. People need to know about this because it has the potential to cause a fire in the home. Will call company tomorrow, but apparently they will not help and have not recalled the faulty dishwashers yet -- at least according to reports on the internet and the class action lawsuit filed last November.

The product, in the report: dishwasher, household, built-in
We filled and started our KitchenAid dishwasher as normal and after about 10 minutes, we heard buzzing and popping coming from the dishwasher. We went to the kitchen and saw thick black smoke billowing out of the handle penetration under the control panel of the dishwasher. I turned off power at the breaker box and the noises and smoke soon stopped. The dishwasher isn’t new, but certainly doesn’t seem old enough to fail in such dramatic fashion. With superficial research on [REDACTED], I quickly learned that this problem is quite common, often leading to kitchen fires. This is extremely dangerous. Many people run these machines at night or when leaving the house for the day. This issue needs to be addressed, but Whirlpool is resisting!!???

The product, in the report: KitchenAide Dishwasher Model # KUDS03STSS3, Ser# FW0704272 Stainless Steel
I have a KitchenAide dishwasher Model #KUDS03STSS#. It is 2 years old. After reading and hearing all the stories about dishwasher fires in Whirlpool made units, I called a local repair service and had them come out to checkout my dishwasher. The repairman had not heard anything nor seen any fires with Whirlpool made dishwashers nor had any other retailers and repairmen that I had talked to. He took off the front cover and was inspecting the machine. He said he had to go back to the office for something. He put the cover back on and told me to turn off the circuit breaker and not use the machine until he came back the next day. The next day he returned. He took the door cover off and showed me where he had found the wiring in the control box had started to melt and had stuck the plastic wall. He said he had spent time researching the problem and had found that many of these machines had gone on fire in the control box. He strongly recommended that we leave the power off and not use this machine. He also said he would not recommend replacing the control box because the problem has not been resolved and we would be in the same situation of a possible fire. Now I have a very expensive dishwasher that cannot be used. I consider myself lucky in that I caught the problem before it went on fire.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher model #KUDS01FTBT1
I have a KitchenAid (manufactured by Whirlpool) dishwasher (model #kuds01flbt1) that quit working. Upon some investigation I determined the problem was likely the control board. After removing the front panel to access the control board I found the board had shorted and burnt, and also melted some of the wire on the wiring harness. There was no fire beyond that, but can easily see how this short could have caused a major fire. I did some research on-line and found there are already quite a few instances of fires from this dishwasher, and a television report from January 2012 said the CPSC was investigating. So, basically this report confirms I have a similar experience to many others.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel dishwasher
a Whirlpool Dishwasher, Kitchen Brand, costing over 1000$ has a design defect that caused an injury.
The door mechanism on this entire Stainless Steel unit is held back by 2 springs, attached to ropes (not cables made of stainless or some other steel)> This component has failed without warning. The door string is hidden and there are no maintenance or inspection instructions nor any way to detect the failure until it has occurred. The rope gave way, surprising the user, and the heavy stainless door dropped, cutting a 75 year old user on the tibia.
At such a price point a sub par component like a rope should not be used on the critical component/safety feature that holds back the stainless door from falling

The consumer did not suffer any injuries.
The consumer stated he contacted the manufacturer and they informed him that it was not a part of a recall. They also informed him that they could have someone sent to service the dishwasher, but he would have to pay for the repairs.
The consumer feels that this is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kithen Aid Dishwasher Model KUDT03FTSS2; Serial number FU4803756
I purchased a Kitchen Aid Disher model# KUDT03FYSS2 in Dec. 2007. I purchased an extended warantee that apparently expired in May of 2011. I reported a “burning” from the disher- repair person came out and did not really find anything wrong- in March of 2012 the dishwasher stop running and again I reported a burning electrical smell- A repair person from Kitchen Aid came out and discovered that the electronic brd was completely burned- wires were also damaged. Pictures were taken by the repair person and me - I was charged $290.00 to replace the circuit brd. I strongly feel that this a manufactorer defect and this problem should have been handled in a different way- It was scary to see the damage to the circuit board and the potential for an even bigger fire. ** When I paid the repair person for the repair I was told that a receipt would come by way of email- I callled several times for a receipt and keep getting the round around about checking my spam folder. Is this a way discourage and distracting me?

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, under counter, 36”, black
On Wednesday, 3/7/2012 our KitchenAid dishwasher model KUDM01TJBL0 spewed smoke and shot flames out of the upper-right corner of the door.
We had started a load of dishes washing and within 5 minutes the unit started making very loud, crackling and popping noises, and started sending out thick, black smoke. I wasn’t sure what to do, but I thought that opening the dishwasher door might cut the power to whatever was burning. I pulled open the door just as flames started to shoot out of the upper-right corner of the door. The flames only lasted a few seconds after that.
The circuit breaker the dishwasher was on did not trip the whole time; I turned off the circuit breaker myself shortly after the flames extinguished. We ran fans to clear the house of the smoke and the house smelled like burnt plastic for a couple of days. Other than the dishwasher itself, there was no other damage.
I took the dishwasher door apart and took pictures of the area that caught fire. It was the controller circuit board that burnt, along with a few connectors, a low-voltage ribbon cable that disintegrated, and a shell holding the controller board that had a hole melted through it.
I’ve searched online, and I’ve found other pictures of KitchenAid dishwashers that caught fire, and the damage to the circuit boards is very similar, so this seems to be a common failure mode.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher (under counter)
3/2012 The consumer stated that the dishwasher stopped working and the control panel would not illuminate. She found out that the reason could be that the “Thermal Fuse” needed to be replaced. Her husband ordered a new one and replaced it on 3/7/2012. After they replaced it they turned on the dishwasher and it worked for the first load.
3/15/12 The consumer placed the dishwasher in wash cycle approximately 3-5 minutes later, she heard a popping sound. When she came back into the kitchen she saw that there was smoke coming out of top of the control panel of the dishwasher. She opened the door, but was afraid to turn it off from the control panel. She had to switch it off from the circuit breaker.
There were no damages to her home. Her husband took it apart and saw that the electronic components from the control panel had melted.
3/15/12 The consumer contacted the manufacturer and they informed her that they would refund her for the Thermal Fuse. They stated that the dishwasher was out of warranty and that the unit was not recalled.
The consumer feels that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher
I loaded the KitchenAid dishwasher at 7:45, pressed “normal” and “energy saver dry” and start. I left to take my son to preschool. At 8:15, I returned home to a house filled with the smell of melted plastic. The dishwasher light had switched to “energy saver dry” only but water was still cycling. I attempted to turn off the dishwasher by pressing “cancel” but nothing happened. I opened the door hoping to turn off the machine. Water spewed everywhere and the dishwasher kept running. I ran to the control panel and switched off the fuse. I could not see any damage to the washer. I allowed the dishwasher to sit about an hour and turned the fuse back on. Then, I pressed “normal” and “start”. Immediately the light switched back to “energy saver dry” only. Again, the only way I could stop the machine was to flip the fuse in the control panel. A neighbor disconnected the electric from the dishwasher at the dishwasher. After the dishwasher cooled down, I removed the panel and found the circuit board black with smoke and wires were beginning to melt.
I immediately called KitchenAid Customer Service. The representative said KitchenAid had not received a complaint like this with this model dishwasher. She offered to schedule a service tech visit at my expense. I requested to be transfered to her manager. [REDACTED], wrote up the incident, Ref #[REDACTED].

The product, in the report: dishwasher
We had just started our KitchenAid dishwasher for the evening before we went to bed when I went into the kitchen and could smell electrical wire burning. The smell filled the kitchen. We immediately stopped the dishwasher. It wasn’t running correctly it was stuck in the beginning part of the cycle. We stopped it and then waited and then tried to start it again but the smoke and smell continued so we stopped it. My husband opened the control panel up and we could see the wires were starting to melt against the plastic back of the control panel. We put the smoke detector on top of the counter above the dishwasher before we went to bed.
In the morning I looked up the paper to find out how old our dishwasher was. It had been working fine and this incident surprised us. It was purchased in 2003 from Sears. We have had it for 9 years so we were debating repairing it or buying a new one. Our last dishwasher was a KitchenAid and we had it for over 12 years with no problems.
That day after work when I was telling a friend about this she said I should [REDACTED] KitchenAid to see how long they should last. That is when I came across the kitchenaidfires.com website. I was shocked as many of the entries were exactly what happened to us or could have happened if I had not went back into the kitchen before we went to bed. We went out and bought a new dishwasher NOT a KitchenAid. I had read even replacing the panel people have had it happen again. We were not taking any chances with our family and home.
I tried to call KitchenAid but have been unable to get through to the correct department. I only spoke with the parts person who wasn’t too helpful in transferring my call to the correct department. I am going to keep trying.
These should be recalled before someone loses their life.
