The product, in the report: Kitchenaid dishwasher
My dishwasher caught on fire shortly after starting a normal load. The electrical components started melting. It is a Kitchenaid dishwasher. Everything being washed was dishwasher safe and ive never had any issues with the unit beforehand. I typically run a load before bed but luckily I ran it right after dinner this time while my family was awake. Had we caught it a moment later, our kitchen could have caught fire. When I opened the dishwasher, the water was still spraying out. We had to cut the power so the load would stop. Once the power was turned back on, the load continued to run but none of the electrical components worked. We had to turn the power back off and remove the wiring for the dishwasher to stop spraying water.

No one hurt Made Mar 28, 2026, sent to the company Apr 13, 2026, published by CPSC Apr 27, 2026
The product, in the report: KitchenAid black stainless steel, pocket handle dishwasher.
While the dishwasher was running a normal cycle, one or more plastic wheels from the lower dish rack detached from their mounts and fell onto the exposed heating element at the bottom of the unit. During the dry cycle, the plastic burned on contact with the element, producing significant smoke inside the dishwasher. The incident was detected by smell before any smoke alarm or air purifier activated, no automatic shutoff or thermal protection feature in the appliance interrupted the event. The circuit breaker was shut off to ensure it would not continue to run.
Product - KitchenAid dishwasher, Model KDPE334GBS0, Serial F81103474, Type 582-2
No physical injuries occurred, but the smoke produced was significant enough to require rewashing all dishes by hand and airing out the home. Upon inspection, at least 3 wheels completely failed, one which had fallen into the tub and contacted the heating element, and the other two fell off when the rack was pulled out. The plastic screws were recovered, and were completely stripped. No safeguard, if any, triggered to stop the dishwasher upon the presence of smoke.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher
KitchenAid dishwasher (model KDPM604KPS0 serial number FA3801249) purchased October 2021. This model features a “pocket” door handle which also serves as the display for cycle progress. The plastic pocket that you pull to open the door split apart leaving dangerous sharp edges. Internet research shows that this is a common, chronic issue with this model but when I spoke with KitchenAid rep a few days ago she claimed KitchenAid had “no knowledge of the issue”, and could not assist with any warranty claim, but she offered 20 percent off the price of a new appliance. Really ??

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made May 8, 2025, sent to the company May 13, 2025, published by CPSC May 28, 2025
The product, in the report: Model KDTM404KPS, KitchenAid 24-in PrintShield Stainless Steel Top Control Built In Tall Tub Dishwasher with Stainless Steel Tub 44 dBA
I purchased a KitchenAid dishwasher (Model KDTM404KPS) + installation from Home Depot.
Due to installer negligence (the installer ran the unit without inspecting it adequately) and/or a product defect that would have been caught by proper inspection during the installation, the internal spray arm came loose and melted onto the heating element during the first cycle, filling my home with toxic plastic fumes, and blasting my wife in the face upon opening the dishwasher.
This caused immediate eye and respiratory irritation for my wife and exposed my family of 6 to harmful vapors.
The installer started the dishwasher right before he left and said “don’t touch it - let it finish the cycle before using it.” When my wife later opened the dishwasher after the first cycle, she was blasted in the face with melted plastic vapor that mixed with the steam.
My wife immediately called me after this event and I told her to keep the dishwasher closed until I got home to take a look. I opened and inspected the dishwasher to find a loose screw on the inside-bottom of the unit, along with the main spray arm off to the side. Upon inspecting the spray arm further, I noticed it had been melted onto the heating element - this is what caused the strong chemical blast into my wife’s face upon opening the unit after the wash cycle kicked off by the installer.
My wife’s eyes, airway, and face were painfully irritated for approximately 30 minutes. She opened the windows in the house to help clear the chemical vapors, which lasted for about 8 hours (into the evening after the event). She did not seek further medical attention.
Vaporized plastic exposure to mucous membranes and airways is toxic and likely carcinogenic - there is no safe toxicity limit established for most common consumer-grade plastics used in products in their vapor form when exposed to human tissue in the eyes, face, and airway.
I have photographic evidence and a recorded report from a technician sent by Whirlpool after the event documenting the loose screw and melted spray arm.

Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 19, 2025, sent to the company Feb 24, 2025, published by CPSC Mar 10, 2025
The product, in the report: 24 in. PrintShield Stainless Steel Top Control Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher with Stainless Steel Tub, 44 dBA
The plastic screen cover on my KitchenAid dishwasher broke while opening and created a sharp surface for which an injury could easily occur. I was only slightly cut when this occurred, but now my dishwasher has a sharp protruding piece of plastic that can easily injure anyone opening or closing the dishwasher. The dishwasher was purchased in April 2022, installed in May 2022, and the incident occurred in January 2025 (Less than three years of use). I was using the dishwasher in its designed capacity and simply opening the door. After researching this failure online, this is a common issue with this dishwasher. KitchenAid refused to assist and informed me that the product is out of warranty.
I have children that are able to reach this surface and could also be injured by this sharp piece of protruding plastic. I have since taped it down to protect against future injury, but now every time I open my dishwasher, the sharp plastic surface is exposed. The fact that this damage appears common for this model and it is a reasonably predicted failure mode would make me believe that this is a design defect that is known to KitchenAid.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher Model # KUDC10FXSS3 and Serial # F13112587
KitchenAid Dishwasher Model # KUDC10FXSS3 and Serial # F13112587 On Saturday, February 15, 2025 in the afternoon the above dishwasher was operating in my home on the wash cycle. My wife began to notice a burning smell in our home and sent our oldest son out to find me while clearing snow in our driveway. He found me reporting that something was burning or on fire in our house. I immediately returned to my house and opened our side door, when I entered, I noticed an electrical burning odor. After an investigation I isolated it to the dishwasher. I turned off the power. I disassembled the front door assembly and found evidence of smoke deposits on the insulation, I observed melted material on the door assembly. I removed the dishwasher from under the cabinet and also observed damaged to the cabinet plywood on the left side. No injuries

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 21, 2025, sent to the company Jan 24, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 7, 2025
The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher, fits a standard dishwasher size, model number KDTE104DSS1 Serial number F50602000.
The KitchenAid dishwasher doesn’t completely drain water after a dishwashing cycle is run. Cold, dirty water is left in the dishwasher below the filter in the bottom after use. I think the water recycling is causing bacteria to be left on the dishes, from the dirty water, after use. While the water is hot, I am not sure that it is hot enough to sterilize it. I have gotten diarrhea at least three times after eating off of dishes from the KitchenAid dishwater model KDTE104DSS1 Serial number F50602000. My son has also had diarrhea. I don’t think it’s from the food as this doesn’t happen nearly as frequently when we eat in other locations. This has happened in August 2024, January 2025 and other dates. The issue likely affects many dishwashers with water reuse as the filter is not fine enough to filter bacteria. Normal wash with heat dry was selected in the use on 1/20/2025. Previously Normal wash was selected without heat dry and I opened the dishwasher so that the dishes could air dry. Injuries that potentially occurred include fatigue, tiredness, increased use of the bathroom, joint paint, malabsorption of nutrients, intestinal damage and other health problems that come with food poisoning.

My door to my KitchenAid dishwasher was open for unloading. I had to step around my cat which lives underfoot, and as I did, I caught the outer edge of my ankle on the bottom right corner of the door, injuring it. There are several pieces of door trim at that junction with sharp edges.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
9/25/2024: The dishwasher was in use for approximately 30 minutes, when thick acrid smoke emitted from the front of the door panel. The door was also extremely hot to the touch and the loud squeeling sounds emitted from the dishwasher’s door panel. The consumer immediately unplugged the dishwasher and this stopped it from operating and allowed the smoke to die down. There were no injuries. There were soot marks on the door.
He removed the dishwasher’s cover on the front and discovered the electronic control panel was scorched and melted.
The consumer has never had prior safety issues with the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher with top controls
We have a KitchenAid dishwasher - Model # KDTM404PSO. The top controls are covered with a plastic cover with very sharp edges. I have gouged my shins several times badly. I recently had to seek treatment over eight weeks at a hospital wound care center for a large gouge caused my the sharp-edge-plastic-control cover. KitchenAid should replace the plastic controls cover with one with blunt edges or a bumper. I am an adult. A child could be even more seriously hurt. I have tried several times unsuccessfully to contact KitchenAid.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher model: KUDE60FXBL3 serial: F14401396 Type: 586-1 - Black 23.875” Built-In Dishwasher W10300927 A
KitchenAid dishwasher Model: KUDE60FXBL3 caught fire mid cycle with smoldering and arcing. The was a loud pop and within a minute audible crackling from a nearby speaker was heard from the arcing occurring in the dishwasher. When we went to investigate, thick smoke was discovered pouring out the top of the dishwasher, and a horrific electrical burning smell was detected. The door to the dishwasher was opened to stop the cycle, and the electrical breaker was switched to “off”. Smoke continued to emit from the inside vent on the door of the dishwasher. The front cover has since been removed to reveal char marks, soot, and damage to what I think is the control panel. The pop we heard was some sort of explosion that created a bulge in the cover of this part. When this cover was removed evidence of the fire was seen. Upon internet research, we discovered there was a class action lawsuit for this issue; not a recall. We were never aware of this potential problem. Had we been asleep or not home, there most definitely would have been a tragic accident. KitchenAid/Whirlpool has not responded. The dishwasher was functioning normally prior to this event.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid undercounter dishwasher, model KUDS01FLBL5, SN FR2601845, likely built in 2004.
Kitchenaid dishwasher ran normally for about 30 minutes then smoke started pouring out of the top right portion of the control panel, smelling of burnt PCV wiring insulation. Used to build factory equipment for large company, so understand product safety well. This is an UNSAFE product. The control panel’s printed circuit board has severely burned areas suggesting a failure in the heater element circuit. Neither the house’s circuit breaker tripped nor did the [REDACTED] thermal fuse mounted next to the circuit board operate as it should-it failed to interrupt the circuit and likely would have flamed had we not been nearby. As such, we are dealing with a house full of acrid smoke from PCV wiring insulation that overheated and melted. Luckily our house did not catch fire. It is disturbing to note that Whirlpool Corporation has had numerous similar incidences reported to SaferProducts.gov for many years.
Kitchenaid dishwasher Model KUDS01FLBL5, SN FR2601845. Failure occurred 6:30PM, February 29, 2024 at my residence. Date of manufacture not clearly marked, though would guess 2004 when house was new; not original owner, though we have used the dishwasher since 2011 and have had no previous electrical failures or other safety issues. Safe products DO NOT smoulder, smoke, or catch fire.

First aid Made Feb 21, 2024, sent to the company Feb 23, 2024, published by CPSC Mar 8, 2024
The product, in the report: Dishwasher. Note: This design and safety defect have been observed on several other KitchenAid and Whirlpool models that have been on sale for at least the past 5 years and are still on sale today. They are on display at several [REDACTED] stores.
As I was opening the dishwasher door via the front handle (standing on the side), the hinge mechanism bound and then released without warning. This caused me to lean further forward than expected while the side of the door came in contact with, and subsequently cut into, my shin. The hinge mechanism was never smooth, but this was the first time it bound and then released without warning.
After treating my injury (which is now a permanent and sensitive scar), I inspected the dishwasher to find a very sharp edge and point on the upper front corner of the door. This condition was created by several poor design and manufacturing practices which lead to an overhang of the plastic control panel and a protruding sharp edge and point.
While it may seem like an unlikely combination of events that led to my injury, upon further inspection of other similar brand new, KitchenAid dishwashers, I found this sharp edge and point condition is quite common. It is also a design that is used on many models of Whirlpool dishwashers still on sale today.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid model kude60hxss dishwasher.
Our KitchenAid model kude60hxss4 dishwasher had a fire in control box and did not trip the breaker. Flames shot up to 3 feet out of the dishwasher door handle. It was making electrical popping and sizzling sounds. It burned the insulation inside the door and completely melted the control box. If we weren’t home to shut the breaker off (or in bed) there probably would have been a major fire. When we pulled the dishwasher out, there also was a leak beneath it, which caused buckling in the floor.

I have a KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KDTM404ESS1. We have had two in our kitchen for about 5 years. Last week we had a burning smell and the dishwasher stopped working. I went online an apparently this is a very common issue. When I took the door apart I found that the main control board was completely melted. This board had caught on fire and melted all the wires, the board and the rubber coating on the door. This could have caused a house fire.

I noticed an electrical burning smell from my Kitchenaid dishwasher (Model W10579093A) when it was running. The smell was coming from the door so I took it open and noticed the multiple wires have overheated and burnt the insulation plastic next to it (see pictures for wires and burnt mark). Luckily it was during the day and I was able to stop it to investigate. If this was during our usual dishwashing routine at night, it might have caught fire and led to something worse.

Our Kitchenaid dishwasher, model KDTM404EBS1, tripped the breaker twice mid-run. After the second time there was a burning smell coming from the dishwasher. The issue turned out to be a burned control board and wiring harness. Copper was exposed on multiple wires due to the burning, leading me to believe that electrical shorts due to this tripped the breaker. I consider us lucky that the breaker tripped before something caught fire.

Re: KitchenAid dishwasher model KDPM604KPS There are two sharp “corners”/hinges at the bottom of the dishwasher and my shoe hooked on one of them and caused me to trip and fall to the floor on my back. This could have be prevented by a different design or some kind of plastic insert/cover. If I had bare feet, I would have cut myself. If I hurt myself, someone else probably will.
UPDATED ON 6/23/2023: [This is to advise that the sharp part of the dishwasher that can catch on one’s foot is not part of the hinge…it is actually the bottom left and right corner of the door…approx. 1.25” from the front.]

It was burned so bad, that the “plug” actually broke apart in pieces. On an initial [REDACTED] search for my dishwasher model number, there are many complaints about this exact issue, with pictures that exactly match mine.
I did email whirlpool about this issue, but have not received a response as of yet.
Is this a known issue ? Has it been recalled?

The next day I ran the dishwasher late at night and suddenly I heard 4 to 5 loud pops (as if someone had thrown a softball at the door) about 10 seconds apart. Then smoke started pouring out of the little hole on the top of the door where it latches. It was the same smell from earlier. I quickly unplugged it from under the sink and stayed up for hours making sure it didn’t start a fire in my house!

I got out of bed due to a terrible smell. Woke up my boyfriend who identified the dishwasher as the cause. The dishwasher front (metal) was extremely hot to the touch. I opened the dishwasher to a cloud of putrid black electric fire smoke. It appears of the spinners in the bottom of the dishwasher caught fire.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher.
KitchenAid dishwasher started smoldering at control board. Apparently a very common problem for Whirlpool and KitchenAid but no way to contact them properly. The circuit was on an AFCI bracker which tripped so this probably saved the kitchen from burning out as had happened to many other people. Wire insulation totally melted off, connector melted and signs of smoke. The potential outcome is horrifying and I shouldn’t have to rely on installation of a not required AFCI to save the house from burning down due to a KitchenAid appliance.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid built-in dishwasher
I bought this washer 10-12 years ago and I am also an electrical engineer doing hardware design as well as field failure analysis. For years when the washer is running a smell came from it. I always thought it was steam making the cabinet’s MDF smell which is very similar to electrical printed circuit board overheat smell. This weekend the washer was off and after determining the breaker and switch were ok I searched on [REDACTED]. I found this link [REDACTED] you can see he also had an overheating issue. He attributed this to an object in the macerator but I don’t think that was the root-cause. My macerator was free to spin. I think there is an inherent design flaw on the power input side of the board. Either the contact rating is not enough or there is not enough copper in the pcb which resulted in overheating. Looking through reports it seems like there are many reports of the controller board on kitchen aid dishwashers producing either smoke or fire or both.

The Kitchenaid control board caught fire. This is the second control board that failed in this way.
Though in our case, no one was harmed as a result of the dishwasher failure, it is clear that the control board in the dishwasher caught fire. So the risk imposed by this dishwasher is that it could cause a house fire, which of course could injure and kill its occupants.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid dishwasher, white, stainless interior
I purchased a kitchenaid dishwasher 3-13-2013, Mod:KUDC101XWH0, SER:F04610508, had issues with the product initially and believe the “motherboard” had to be replaced. I was unaware of the history of fires with dishwashers until last night 6-14-2022. After the load had been washing for quite some time (an hour?) I heard a loud grinding noise and when I checked black smoke was coming out of the front control panel I turned off the breaker and it stopped. The smoke and odor were terrible but am very fortunate that I was able to witness and react quickly to prevent more serious damage.
I did not include the description of risk of harm because I thought a fire was self explanatory. My entire house could have burnt down with the 3 of us inside and we could have died or at a minimum some type of lung damage from the smoke and toxic fumes.

When using my dishwasher it reached the drain cycle and began smoking profusely from the door. Black smoke with an electrical smell which seemed to be coming from the right side of the door. The door was extremely hot to the touch in the right corner. I immediately turned off the power at the fuse panel. Upon further inspection I noticed melted plastic and charring around the control panel. As a fire fighter I believe this could have resulted in a kitchen fire if left unattended.

During normal cycle for Kitchenaid dishwasher, heard what sounded like either an arcing or grinding noise coming from machine. Ran over and saw smoke pouring out top at the front, but the machine was still running. I ran to the breaker box and manually threw the breaker to turn it off. No visible damage to the outside of the unit; opened door to the dishes and nothing abnormal noted (nothing stuck on the coils, etc.). Eventually removed the front cover of the door and found significant fire damage to the control panel (main plug burned through, lots of soot). Damage was local only to the control panel/wires, but had we not been home or had been asleep, this would have likely resulted in a significant fire. Pictures available.

My Kitchen-Aid dishwasher had an electrical fire in the control panel. There were no flames, but thick dark smoke emerged until we unplugged the unit. I reported it to Whirlpool. The company sent a technician to examine it and later shipped us, free of charge, a new control and wiring harness. We were charged $125 to have the technician later install the parts. It was repaired eight days after the fire.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher, KDTM354ESS1, see details below, metallic color
We were running a load of dirty dishes in a Kitchen Aid dishwasher, as per usual. When it was about time to finish, however, we smelled something burning in the dishwasher area. When we looked around the kitchen, we saw a faint trace of black smoke coming out of the dishwasher door. I also noticed the dishwasher stopped working, since the dishwater was the only appliance in the area and it generated no noise or LED indicator. I found later that it also tripped the breaker. Fortunately nobody got hurt. When I disassembled the front door to see where the smoke came from (after disconnecting the power cable), I noticed the wires connecting to the main control board were severely burned at the connection, melting the wire terminal connectors. What was worse--the wires melted into what was supposed to be the flame retarded padding inside. As I inspected around the board, there was a section of cotton-like foam around. I do not know if the foam is flammable, but it could have caused fire spreading from the dishwasher door to the kitchen. The combination of the melting wires and terminals, the not flame-retarded plastic padding, and the foam, is a recipe for fire. I don’t think the dishwasher is safe in design.

While running a load in my dishwasher, I smelled an acrid odor that seemed like something electrical was burning. I traced the odor to the location of the dishwasher. When the load was finished and I opened the door, the plastic detergent/rinse aid dispenser had partially melted and was discolored. This part had failed a couple of years ago, but the issue was not nearly as severe as in that instance the reverse side of the dispenser was slightly discolored and the repairman said the coil had burnt out. It seems the replacement part failed in a similar fashion but much more severely. No odor was noticed when the previous part failed.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher
Our KitchenAid dishwasher caught fire after we went to bed (we set it to come on after a 2hr delay). Fire was recognized by house pet who alerted us. Upon arrival to the kitchen, the unit was smoking with smoke stacking up at the ceiling. I removed the dishwasher from cabinet and secured the power source.
Post-incident review shows the fire was contained within the door panel and combustion evident at the control module. Also, it appears that multiple class action lawsuits against manuf (Whirlpool) have already been fired and ‘won’ yet they are still selling units AFTERWARDS that have KNOWN BAD COMPONENTS.
How in the world do they get away with this? I contacted them today and the Whirlpool QA rep told me something to the effect of, “Failures happen. Haven’t you ever had your car break down?” (and it was in the pejorative...not nice). There’s no way for her to know I used to run a QA dept for a major DoD aircraft remanufacturing line and later ran said line. If any of my QA reps ever used those words with my customers, they’d find themselves serving beans in the cafeteria in less time than it took me to utter those words...
It is unknow if door panel is fire rated to withstand internal combustion but another quick review on the net shows this not to be the case (i.e. bbq’d dishwashers/kitchens). Minor smoke inhalation injury. Possible death if power had not been secured.

10/22/2021: There was a fire with their dishwasher. The husband quickly tripped the breaker. Once the breaker tripped the fire died out on its own. Damage was limited to the dishwasher. None of the items inside of it were damaged. The dishwasher was in use approximately 45 minutes.
She will contacted the mfr.
When the husband removed the front door, they found that the control panel was burned.
2/2016: Control panel would blink, but would not work. The consumer called the manufacturer and was advised to shut it down to reset it. She did as instructed, but that did not solve the problem and the dishwasher would no longer work. The control board panel and latch were replaced by the manufacturer. The consumer paid $193.15 to have those parts repaired. S&S Appliance (Mfr’s authorized service dealer), was the firm that performed the work.
Recently, the consumer found information about a Whirlpool and KitchenAid Class Action Lawsuit involving this issue, but it has already been settled.
The number: 74731319K is stamped on her dishwasher’s control board and was made by Whirlpool, was on it as well.

I have a Kitchenaid dishwasher purchased in 2016. Model No. KDTM354DSS. I had noticed the wheels at the bottom of the washer tend to come off. Tonight, one came off and burned onto the hot coil at the bottom of the dishwasher. My son noticed a chemical smell. I opened the washer and felt a burning sensation in my lungs and eyes due to the fumes. It seems the wheel burned onto the coil during the drying cycle.

KitchenAid dishwasher model # KUDS30IXBT1 caught fire during normal mid-cycle operation. I was alerted by loud popping sounds and smoke pouring from its control panel area. I was able to stop operation of the dishwasher and open the breaker to its electrical connection. Subsequent investigation revealed that the fire had originated in its electronic control board and/or wiring harness connectors. Fortunately, I was home, in an adjacent room, and not sleeping. It seems like it easily could have set the house on fire.

Three days ago my mother-in-law have cut her leg on the side of the dishwasher door. My wife has opened the dishwasher and was unloading the dishes. At the same time my mother-in-law have decided to have a tea. As she approached the countertop to get the kettle, she brushed her leg against the side of the dishwasher door, and immediately her leg started to bleed, profusely. After we have taken care of the cut, I’ve checked the area where she was cut, and noticed a sharp corner protruding from the side of the dishwasher door. I’ve photographed the manufacture’s label of the dishwasher, the side of the door with the sharp corner, and the next day, when we were changing the wound dressing, I took the picture of the cut. Please see attached images. Please note that I have tried reporting this incident to a manufacturer, but was not able to get through.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
The dishwasher was on for approximately 20 minutes, when it started emitting smoke from the front door area. The consumer opened the dishwasher door to stop it from working, which it did. However, there were flames inside of the door. So, he immediately tripped the breaker for the dishwasher.
Upon further inspection, the consumer found that the control panel’s wiring had caught fire and burned up. The panel melted completely, as well as some of the wiring inside the door. The home has a burned, smoke like odor.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer, the same week of the incident. He spoke with a rep. in their Consumer Safety Department. The rep. said that they did not know anything about this and did not offer to look into the matter further.
The consumer is extremely concerned, because this could have led to a substantial home fire.
There were no injuries.

The manufacturer was contacted and they advised that a service technician would be sent out.
2/27 The technician came out and informed that the electrical wiring had been severely burnt. He stated that there was an estimated repair cost of $500. However, it was not guaranteed that this would solved the problem.

Loaded kitchenaid dishwasher at night and in the morning had horrible burnt smell. The plastic wheel on the bottom rack had fallen off and landed on the heating element and burned up. The wheels fall off too easily, as they have come off before but luckily didn’t land on the element that time. There should be some kind of screen over the elements so nothing can land directly on it, as I had a spatula fall on it before and it melted in half. So worried about this causing a fire, not to mention it took 3 days to get rid of that smell in the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: Full sized under cabinet dishwasher.
The left rail of the dishwasher’s upper rack broke as I was sliding the rack our to load additional dishes. This caused the left side to suddenly drop several inches. Had the strain on the remaining right rail caused it to fail simultaneously, the entire rack would have fallen ~3 feet to the floor. Most of the time a top rack’s load includes glasses. Had the rack fallen these glasses could have shattered spreading broken glass shards that could easily have injured adults and children in the kitchen.
Upon inspection of the failed rail it was noted that the rail consisted of two pieces that had been tack welded together. Tack welding destroys the protective coating on the steel. Bare steel is subject to corrosion. These tack welds had then, predictably, rusted and failed.
The manufacturer initially declined to replace the rail. The dishwasher had been in service for 16 months and exceeded the warranty period. With pushing the manufacturer agreed to pay for the part but not the labor. Additional pushing eventually led to the manufacturer replacing the part and covering labor.
The concern is that this is an inherently very poor design. This failure so early in the product life would seem to support that notion. This is a part number used across several brands and many models; all ticking time bombs.

We had started a wash cycle and after a while noticed a burning smell. We turned it off to investigate but didn’t find the source of the smell. When we tried o turn on the dishwasher it no longer would turn on. Two weeks later preparing for the arrival of a new dishwasher, we removed the old washer and that’s when we discover that the side of the cabinet was severely burned. We are very lucky that the fire didn’t spread. I took several pictures of the damage. The white protective covering that wraps the washer was also burned.

Loaded and turned on the dishwasher on a normal cycle. Approximately ten minutes into the cycle I heard a zapping sound and went to investigate. There was electrical arcing and smoke coming from the upper right of the door, where the display is. I opened the dishwasher door to attempt to turn it off, but it continued running. I shut off the circuit breaker and got a fire extinguisher, as smoke and a burning odor continued to come out of the unit. After power was disconnected, the smoldering died down and the smoke stopped.

Hurt, no treatment Made Apr 8, 2019, sent to the company Apr 30, 2019, published by CPSC May 14, 2019
The product, in the report: KitchenAid Model KDTM354DSS4 Dishwasher
On March 22, 2019 while loading the aforementioned dishwasher top rack for cleaning during the early morning on March 23, 2019, the top rack two front support “bosses” failed without warning throwing some glass ware onto the ceramic floor causing said glassware to shatter on the floor. This is the second instance of this type of failure the other having occurred in October 2017 while the tray was being pulled out for unloading. In this instance only one of the top rack’s bosses failed since the owner was able to quickly grab onto the rack thus preventing the rack’s contents from spilling on the floor. In doing so, the owner’s finger suffered a minor cut. In the current failure, only minor scrapes and scuffs on the finger and hand with no open wounds.
Luckily for the owner an extended warranty was purchased along with the KitchenAid Dishwasher and the top rack was repaired on Monday March 25, 2019. Whirlpool customer service was contacted on Friday evening to no avail. Owner was placed on hold for an extended time interval. Consequently the phone conversation was ended by the owner. On Saturday March 23, 2019 contacted Whirlpool customer service and informed them of the catastrophic top rack failure. They were also advised of the previous failure and extended warranty coverage. Contacted [REDACTED] customer service who eventually made arrangements for the Monday repair.
Top Rack failure was very similar to that which occurred in October 2017. The support bosses apparently failed by them being pulled away from the material substrate. This is shown in Figures (8-16} where the part location that was on the bracket showed material separation. Repairs in both instances were made using the same Whirlpool part Wl0546503 Mfd. date 09/14/2019 for current failure compared to that part that failed that had been Mfd. on 10/11/2017.
Note that Whirlpool warranty covers rack failures for a period of S years. Last 4 years are for parts only. The implication here is that Whirlpool apparently knew that the racks apparently did not last. Now the question remains is what happens after 5 years? The MTBF for both failures is about the same. May 2016 to October 2017 for the first failure and October 2017 to March 2019. Accordingly, Whirlpool apparently has no desire to prevent future failures by either changing materials or design. Both the new bracket and older brackets apparently share the same design and material. Other Whirlpool dishwashers have apparently a more robust design and or material since KitchenAid does not universally used these parts across their entire dishwasher product line.
Note that this dishwasher was a replacement for a 6 year old one that previously had a burned up circuit board that took over 2.5 years to fail based upon the overheated electrical insulation odor that was present after each wash cycle. Kindly note that owner was certified Weapons inspector after training at [REDACTED] high reliability soldering school so owner surely is aware of what overheated electrical insulation smells like. Repair to replace the board was well over $300. Whirlpool offered a $300 rebate on a new dishwasher. All paperwork was filed via certified mail and to date Whirlpool’s response as to the whereabouts of the rebate fell into an abyss of silence. The owner has had other Whirlpool kitchen and laundry products fail and I am wondering just why there is no remedial action by consumer product safety commissions to remedy the situations.
In conclusion, owner feels that Whirlpool Dishwasher is a ticking top rack failure time bomb. It had two failures and replacement parts appear to be that which had been initially installed and failed twice. Previous failure parts were sent back to Whirlpool for analysis. To date we have not received any analysis information.
Question to the CPSC is what will be your actions to correct the situation before someone really gets hurt from this defective product. Having a Whirlpool warranty to correct top rack failures truly does not protect the customer from the obvious safety issues with this dishwasher. Do we have to wait for corrective action to be taken when someone is really hurt because of this top rack failure? Kindly provide an answer. Please note that based upon the MTBF limited data, it is anticipated that another top rack failure will occur within the 5 year warranty and surely when the warranty expires.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Model KUDS30IXBL9, Serial Number F33813483 Dishwasher
KitchenAId model KUDS30IXBL dishwasher, Purchased 12/23/2013 from Lowes Edmond, OK. Registered with Whirlpool 12/24/2013. Evening of 1/24/2019 the electronic controls burned filling the house with acrid fumes from burning electronics. No visible flames were seen. The 20 amp panel breaker was thrown and would not reset. Checked the dishwasher by plugging into another circuit which threw sparks and smoke from the top of the control panel. Unplugged and then removed front cover. The computer electronic box had bubbled on the exterior from heat, the insulation was melted in some spots, the main connector into the box was melted and fused with the box, the remaining connectors were all blackened. Contacted KitchenAid via [REDACTED] and received both a message and phone call the next morning (1/25/2019). Provided model and serial numbers to them. Was connected with Whirlpool Product Safety, [REDACTED], and a service call from [REDACTED] was arranged for 1/28. [REDACTED] arrived at 1:15PM +/- tech asked if I would accept a repair and I declined the new electronics and all new wiring. Told him I had checked for blockage of all the pumps and motors, his response was “...you didn’t have anything to do with this...”. Second call with [REDACTED] and was told an offer to buy back or discount another purchase would be made upon supplying the receipt. Supplied receipt on 1/28. 1/29 phone with [REDACTED] to confirm their offer and repeatedly asked why it failed and how it was related to the prior failures. Was told they could not diagnose over the phone and tech should have done that, see tech’s comments. Agreed to the buy back which will take 14 -21 days for them to come pick up the old one and hand over check. I am reporting this as had I been asleep or away this could very well have been a life altering event. Whatever the fix was for the older product it was not 100% for this newer product The failure mode seems to be same.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The dishwasher completely quit working. A new load of dishes was ready to run but the unit would not start and no indicator light would come on. Some background: Unit was acting up for month or so with green light not coming on at end of cycle, no lights or buttons working, or blue light coming on but buttons not working and cannot cancel. Turning off circuit breaker and then on had been fixing the problem every time. On Saturday evening Jan 19, the circuit breaker “fix” did not work. I removed the front metal panel. Looking at the control module at the upper right, the problem was easy to see. The 4-wire plastic connector housing at the lower left of the control module was burned, positions #2 and #3, #3 seemed the worst (black wire) and positions #1 and #4 seemed fine From Left to Right, wire colors are #1 Blue (w/white stripe), #2 Blue (w/red stripe), #3 Black, #4 White Safety concern: I believe the connector as designed by the manufacturer is the problem as it is undersized to handle the electric current for the heater and motor. As such, arcing occurs at the metal junction between male and female part of each connector. This seems to be a chronic problem with dishwashers and in particular with the model which I have. Potential hazard is fire. Follow-up: Dishwasher now works perfectly and dishes are super clean and no film on dishes. My thinking is that the water is now hotter as the resistance in the burned terminal was limiting current to the heating element. I believe high water temperature is the best solution to prevent film and crud buildup. Action Recommended: believe there should be a recall to replace the connector on the wiring harness so that the female metal part is a standard spade type connector and not the existing design which is unusual and undersized. I have attached pictures showing the actual burned connectors removed from my unit I have also attached a picture from the internet (IMG_7389.jpg) which is similar to my unit, although mine was not burned quite as severely. I have also attached a pictures of the type of connector I used to repair my unit. The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher, standard 24” width, white. Came with our house. Installed early 2006?
Our KitchenAid dishwasher was approximately 12 years old. During an ordinary wash cycle, I heard the unit arcing inside (Popping/ripping noise). I opened the door, which shut off the unit, and I turned off the circuit breaker (which had not tripped). After disassembling the dishwasher door, I found a seriously charred wiring termination at the main control panel. If I hadn’t been nearby, the unit would very likely have caught on fire.
