The product, in the report: Kitchenaid dishwasher model KUDI02IRBS1. Stainless steel, under cabinet model. 24”
Dishwasher smoking. Purchased a Kitchenaid dishwasher model KUDI02IRBS1 about 10 years ago. Dishwasher performed very well during this time. Put the unit into use yesterday and noticed a smell of smoke coming from the top right corner. Immediately shut unit off and flipped fuse box switch to off. Upon inspection of the unit I discovered the main control box over-heated or shorted out causing melting and fire at that site. I was going to simply change out the control box but discovered scorching marks going down some of the wiring harness leading from the melted control box. I’m opting to remove the dishwasher from service and replace with a new dishwasher for peace of mind. I took pictures and video of the issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher, Model KUDP01ILBS5, Serial number FR3303529, purchased from Steve’s Appliances in Mounds View, MN, on October 13, 2004.
On June 28, 2018 we awoke to the strong smell of electronics burning. After investigating, we determined that it was our KitchenAid Dishwasher. There was the extremely strong smell of burning electronics coming from the front control panel, along with scorch marks, ash and small flames. The surrounding cabinet was very lightly scorched. We immediately turned the appliance off at the circuit breaker and the fire put itself out.

The product, in the report: Kitchen aid dishwasher model number KDFE304DSS0, serial number: F42812441 purchased Sept 2014
Started Kitchen aid dishwasher - model number KDFE304DSS0 Serial number: F42812441(purchased Sept. 2014), several minutes into the cycle the dishwasher turns off because it has tripped the circuit breaker. The dishwasher is on its own circuit so I reset breaker and tried to restart the dishwasher. The circuit breaker trips again and retrips each time I tried to reset. Called a certified Kitchen aid repair service company and requested an appointment. Service person arrives exams the dishwasher shows me blackened wires on the wiring harness that connects with control board. I have pictures of blackened wiring harness and blackened connector to the control board. If my circuit breaker had not tripped the wiring would have started a fire!

First aid Made May 9, 2018, sent to the company May 17, 2018, published by CPSC Jun 1, 2018
The product, in the report: Kitchen aid Dishwasher 30” Black, under counter
I had just started my dishwasher, Kitchen Aid, and after approximately 5 to 10 minutes I heard loud popping and when I turned around there were sparks and small flame coming from the top of my dishwasher. I immediately went to cancel and shut down to open door, it wouldn’t take the cancel. But thank God the circuit breaker tripped and shut down. There was smoke coming out. It was a horrible smell and a lot. Thank God I was in the kitchen when this occurred. My 84 yr old mother and 89 year old dad, who is on hospice reside with me. She didn’t even hear the popping from the next room. The smoke did affect my mother who has asthma, but thank God her inhaler took care of it. Took a while to get smoke out from kitchen, dining, living room area since this is all open together. This was so dangerous. It did cause some scorching to my counter top edge which is wood. I did call Whirlpool and they had a tech come out to check. The harness went on fire. Damaged inside of door and control panel. Burned plastic and insides. They have agreed to pay 50% of a New dishwasher from there site on line and the installation and removal of the damaged machine. They gave me a reference number good for 30 days.

No one hurt Made Jan 3, 2018, sent to the company Jan 11, 2018, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2018
The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Dishwasher model KKDTE204DSS
Our Kitchen Aid dishwasher ( Model # KDTE204DSS) was purchased 27 October 2014 from Ferguson Enterprises in Newport News, VA.
On 24 Dec 2016 we woke up and noticed that the granite countertops were extremely hot to the touch and when we opened the dishwasher steam and super hot air came gushing out. Everything plastic was completely melted. ( ie. kids sippy cups, [REDACTED], measuring cups etc). The repairman told us he sees this frequently and that the control board went bad and the dishwasher had stayed in the heated dry mode all night. What a scare to think of a house fire on Christmas Eve with all my kids and grandkids in the house! I have since done some research and found that this was not an anomaly and that the control units have caused a large number of fires but yet nothing has been done and there has not been a recall.
The final straw was this Christmas when I discovered wet carpet in a closet while getting holiday decorations out. We called a plumber and he traced the water back to the dishwasher. The water had been leaking for some time apparently from the diverted motor seal. We never had any water visible - it spread laterally along the subfloor. We now are dealing with over $10,000 of damage while they tear up and replace the tile floor, replace cabinets and wallboard all damaged by the leak! All for a shoddy and inferior 10 cent part. Again the repairman and the water mitigation company told us that this is something they see all the time. Why? When a company has been made aware of a problem and there is a clear danger to the public why are they not held accountable. I had to write you about this because the thought of some other family being injured or killed because of a dishwasher fire would be on my conscience. I have written to Kitchen Aid as well and will look forward to hearing back from both bother you I can no longer use this product with any confidence and would like to see it replaced as well as a public recall or repair of known defective parts.
Thank you.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher Model KUDS30FXPA4 Serial #. F22204485 purchased June 2012
Our KitchenAid dishwasher was started and after a few minutes we noticed a very acrid, burning smell. We immediately turned off the electricity to the machine. When the repairman came, he discovered that the control board was scorched and connections were beginning to burn. I have photographs of the burned, scorched board. If we had not been present there is the possibility that we would have had a serious fire.
There was a class action suit regarding this problem which we found out about after the fact. We don’t understand why Whirlpool has not done a recall on this and why we were not notified about the problem.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Built In Dishwasher
Please be advised that the top rack failed this morning almost with catastrophic results. The washer completed its cycle and the top rack was being pulled out for emptying when without warning the right side gave way. Luckily for Kitchenaid, my 71 year old reflexes held onto the rack preventing it from spewing glass on our new kitchen ceramic floor. The only injury was a slight blood prick and abrasion to the side of the middle finger. Was able to gingerly empty the rack free of glassware and ceramic cups without incident. Observation of failure area showed that the two side rail support lugs failed one apparently by straight shear and the other actually pulled out from the plastic bracket. Was able only to salvage the pulled out lug. Note that this washer is a replacement for a Kitchenaid Dishwasher that had failed due to a severely overheated circuit board. Filed all of the paperwork and yet to receive any monetary compensation from this call action suit. The washer had been installed in May 2016.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, built in stainless steel
I had started a regular load of dishes in my Kitchen Aid dishwasher, when it started spewing acrid electrical smoke. I attempted to open the door, which usually stops it, but it didn’t stop. Water was spraying, and there was much more smoke. I closed the door and attempted to stop it using the Cancel button, but it didn’t stop. I ended up running down to the basement to flip the breaker to cut off the power to the unit. It scorched my cabinet side and the drawer of the cabinet closest to the dishwasher. Had I not been in the room, I fear it would have been a disaster.
The company (Whirlpool) took my info, and arranged for the product to be “looked at” by G & G Appliances. They have been a disaster - only recorded messages from an 800 number, the serviceman never showed up, and I am having the dishwasher removed Saturday.
The Normally, we run the dishwasher at night when we go to bed, to,save energy costs. Had we done that Saturday evening, the results would have been much, much worse.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Dishwasher, Stainless Steel
My dishwasher caught fire. I opened the front and found that the electric board had caught fire. The design is poor. Not only did the electric board catch fire, but the wires leading up to the board have melted into the plastic casing over time. Poor design apparently has the area so hot that it’s melting the wires and perhaps also causing the board to overheat and catch fire.
I’ve gone online and this is a COMMON problem of some Kitchenaid/Whirlpool dishwasher models. MANY complaints. I’m surprised these have not been recalled. I’m grateful I was home.

The product, in the report: Stainless dishwasher
In four days I have gotten three cuts from the Whirlpool Kitchenaid dishwasher model KDTE 254 ESS. I am A heavy kitchen user and am visiting my parents’ who purchased this appliance nine months ago. The cuts I have received were from the top plastic panel on the inside of the dishwasher, the same Part that you use to program the cycles. It is very sharp on the edges and has cut me so deeply three times In four days that I have needed the assistance of another person to help stop the bleeding and dress the wound. I called whirlpool just now and their response was deeply insatisfying, they called my complaint cosmetic. I am beside myself and will be pissed if I have permanent scars from this damage.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dishwasher, Model # KUDS35FXSS3, Serial # F13507888 The Retailer’s records list a date of manufacture of 10-3-11
The evening of June 20, 2017, shortly after starting a load of dishes, smoke and an electrical-fire smell started coming from my dishwasher. I opened the dishwasher, which was early in the wash cycle. I turned off the breaker switch, then I removed the dishes and drained the water. The next day I called to schedule a service appointment.
On June 26, 2017, a qualified service professional from Harry’s TV & Appliance, 11110 N.Pennsylvania Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73120, telephone number 405-755-4000, came and inspected the dishwasher. He stated the fire had destroyed the controls, console, latch, insulation, wire harnesses and the fuse. The estimated cost to repair is $724. The technician emphasized that after replacing the clearly damaged parts, he might be able to determine the cause of the fire, which could require further repairs or might result in a determination that the dishwasher was beyond repair and not safe to use.

I was washing a load of dishes in my dishwasher, as usual. While it was running, I heard a pop and smoke started coming out of the control panel. When I pressed cancel, the button sparked. I opened the door, and thankfully that stopped everything. There was absolutely nothing on the bottom, nothing on the heating element. The problem was the control panel. I am writing this complaint to you, because I am concerned about what the outcome could have been if I was not standing right there to stop it.

The product, in the report: Model # KDFE104DSS; Dishwasher
On 3-1-17 I purchased a Kitchen Aide dishwasher from Lowes in Elk Grove, California. Store #1148. A family of 5 has been using this dishwasher including small children ages 8 and 3 years old. We began noticing gray stains on the dishes etc. Finally we realized that the plastic from the dishwasher racks was melting onto the dishes. We have the dishes as evidence. This is very concerning as to the health risks this could cause. We have all been eating off of the contaminated dishes. I have contacted the manager [REDACTED] at Lowes and he was not very helpful. I feel we deserve a new dishwasher/ dishes etc, and damages for all our troubles. Please help us get justice. Thank you, [REDACTED]

Woke up in the middle of the night to electrical smelling smoke. In investigating where it was coming from it was traced to the kitchen. In not immediately finding the problem, I went to the basement to shut off the dishwasher thinking it might be the problem, the breaker on that circuit was already tripped off. In investigating further. I could smell the burnt smell coming out of the dishwasher door vent. I opened up the door front to find the computer plastic box had melted and burned. My wife started the dishwasher before going to bed.

The product, in the report: Please refer to first page for product model information and a description of the incident.
This dishwasher has very sharp edges on the top inside corner of the door’s edge, and when folded down to load or unload, poses a substantial risk of cuts, scrapes and contusions bad enough to warrant stitches: it can slice a layer of skin clear off. I have sustained two such injuries while briefly brushing past the folded down door, once on each corner.
Duct tape was placed over the sharp edges, however, this product poses a serious hazard to any household, especially those with small children and should never have been offered in this form. It should be discontinued until a better and safer design can be created.

No one hurt Made Feb 22, 2017, sent to the company Mar 24, 2017, published by CPSC Apr 7, 2017
The product, in the report: Stainless steel under counter KitchenAid dishwasher.
This report is regarding a KitchenAid under counter dishwasher, model #KUDS01DJSS0 (the user guide also lists the number 8269908A on the front cover); serial number FL4239840, type 577-0. We did not purchase this dishwasher; it was installed by the prior owners of this house. My guess is that the dishwasher is around 10-12 years old.
The evening of Tuesday, February 21, 2017 the dishwasher was loaded, filled with detergent, and turned on to run with the “normal” cycle setting. Approximately 15 minutes after the unit was turned on it began to make a strange grinding noise; about 10 seconds later smoke appeared from the top right corner of the control panel and 2-3 seconds later we could see flames coming out from the same corner of the control panel with sizzling/popping noises.
We keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, so as I called 911 for the fire department my husband managed to extinguish the fire before it affected anything else in the kitchen. Thankfully no one was hurt. The fire department arrived about 5 minutes later and helped verify that the fire was indeed out, and helped get the dishwasher disconnected from the power source/wiring to ensure an electrical fire would not start up again in the unit.
Needless to say this was a scary incident and if the dishwasher was running when we were not at home and this happened I would hate to think of what might have happened to our house. While I never run the dryer when I’m not at home I will now NEVER run the dishwasher when I’m not at home either. And I will never buy the brand KitchenAid.

This complaint refers to KitchenAid dishwasher model KDTM404ESS. The control panel is on the top of the door. It overhangs the sides of the door and is sharp. It sliced my daughter’s leg, resulting in a bloody gash, about 1.5 inches long. KitchenAid made the top piece too long. It overhangs the sides of the door, has a sharp edge, with an edge that seems unfinished. When the door is open, it can slice your skin.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid dishwasher
This relates to a KitchenAid dishwasher Model No. KDTM404ESS1, Serial No. F6128849. The problem relates to the control panel which is at the top of the door, i.e., when you close the door you do not see the controls. The control panel protrudes slightly from the ends of the door and on the interior corners has a curved edge which is not flush with anything under it. That is, it creates somewhat of a “scoop.” When the door is open to either fill or empty the unit, that corner, or scoop, is at the top edge of the open door. On several occasions, my wife has cut her leg on this edge. I did so yesterday and by the afternoon began to develop cellulitis. I am current on 10 days antibiotic for the infection which is quite painful. When my wife first cut herself, we complained to KitchenAid and the representative indicated that they had never had such a complaint. That representation is dubious since the CPSC has an incident reported from 2012. I checked at the store where we purchased the dishwasher (Ferguson’s) and all KitchenAid and JennAir dishwashers appear to have this defect. Bosch dishwashers do not. This design defect hits the leg approximately 6 to 7 inches above the floor. It obviously presents a hazard to young children who might be in the vicinity of an open door one of these units.

Our KitchenAid dishwasher suddenly and mid cycle started smoking with choking electrical wire fumes and extreme heat (flames) originating from the door control panel. Cleaning cycle was immediately stopped and the dishwasher unplugged from electricity. It took about 20 minutes until the control panel cooled down and smoke stopped. A web search found a class action law suit had been filed against KitchenAid for thousands of others with same problem. This could have burned down our house, if we had not been attentive and stopped- unplugged the spdishwasher immediately.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Model KUDKO1lLB53 Dishwasher
My KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KUDKO1lLB53 electrical panel caught fire today. There was smoke pouring from the front of the dishwasher and the panel started melting. The panel was still burning hot even after turning off the circuit breaker. My home filled with smoke and a horrible burning smell which is still in the house after 12 hours. The dishwasher would not turn off by pushing cancel and I got it to turn off only by turning off the main circuit breaker. The fire caused the front panel to start melting and bubbling.

I have a whirlpool kitchenaidishwasher dishwasher that I paid over 600.00 for and the parts on the racks are plastic it is only a couple years old and the top rack broke and when I pulled the rack out to empty it the parts broke and the rack came loose and through my dishes on the floor the plastic is very brittle and all the rack parts on both sides have to be replaced and I already replaced other parts that broke a year ago. The dishwasher is going to cause a terrible accident if there are small children there when it breaks and all those dishes fly out of there and break all over the floor very dangerous

My dishwasher was running in the wash cycle. I heard a crackling noise and smoke started pouring out the sides of the dishwasher. I tried to shut it off but the controls weren’t responding. I called the fire department and they pulled the machine out and disconnected the power wire. The fire dept had to put up a fan at my front door until the air read clear on their meter. I have a bad sore throat today from that plastic burning odor and smoke. I called kitchen aid today and they are sending a tech here in a few days to see what happened.

The product, in the report: kitchenaid dishwasher kud301xwh1
Kitchenaid Dishwasher model number kuds301Xwh1. Last night my son opened the dishwasher and pulled out the fully loaded top rack. It, and all the glassware loaded in it, collapsed out of the dishwasher. Fortunately, my son, who is 17, was strong enough to catch the rack. A wine glass and a bowl shattered.
Upon closer inspection, the roller assembly of the upper rack failed. The plastic axels that the rollers attach to have deteriorated over time. A quick internet search shows that this is a common occurence. And for us, this is the second time these pieces have failed. The first was just a few years ago.
A consumer should not have to worry that the top rack’s attachment mechanisms might randomly fail, sending several pounds of glassware onto the consumer and the floor. There is clearly a major design/manufacturing fault in this product that is putting consumers at a major risk simply through use of a product as designed and intended.
We only ever use the “normal” function on the dishwasher, so the plastic, by definition, is subjected to “normal” heat and water conditions. I have most of the failed parts.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid undercounter, professionally installed dishwasher Model KUDP01FL.
Turned on dishwasher detected a strong odor and breaker flipped. Opened dishwasher to assure there was nothing jamming/blocking the water heads or flow. Reset breaker and turned dishwasher on again. This time odor was stronger and smoke was coming out of the door panel. Breaker tripped again.
Ordered new dishwasher. In the mean time since my spouse and I are both engineers, we took the door panel apart and took pictures of the obvious shot/breakdown of the control board. At the power connection to the board, the board had big hold melted in it.
Obviously this is a common occurrence (http://kitchenaidfire.com), with over 1000 cases documented of the same problem and nearly 100 of the exact same model that I have (KUDP01FL).

My sister’s KitchenAid dishwasher, Model KUDE40FXSS5 had the water pump hose blow off. There is a recall on this model for that problem, but the recall does not include the Serial Number of her machine. However, her machine had exactly the same problem as the recalled units. Her machine does not have the improved hose clamp (Part Number W10548435) that is applied on the recall.
http://www.trailappliances.com/files/pdf/bc/recalls/KitchenAid-dishwasher-recall-letter.pdf
Her Serial Number is F21907405. The recall only includes machines with Serial Numbers up to FS213---------.
I contacted KitchenAid Customer Service. They said that since her machine is not included in the recall, they could offer no assistance.
I believe that the KitchenAid recall should be expanded to include all machines that do not have the improved hose clamp.
If this hose blows off, a huge amount of water is expelled from the machine onto the floor. Besides the water damage to the floor, this could easily cause a fire if water gets into the electronics, which are located nearby. My brother received an electrical shock (fortunately not severe) while cleaning up water from the floor.

Kitchenaid dishwasher caught on fire tonight. Smoke was visible, followed by visible flames from the control panel on the top right corner.
This is incredibly dangerous as I usually run my dishwasher at night while I’m asleep. Thankfully, I caught it.
There are reports of this happening to many many others, yet there is no recall or warning to let people know about this very hazardous situation.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Stainless Steel Dishwasher KUDC03FVSS0
The dishwasher was being used to wash dishes once a day. Approximately 10 days ago, the dishwasher begin to emit a burning smell, growing in intensity each day. We decided to not let the dishwasher run at night so it could be monitored. On 10/24/14, the dishwasher failed completely and would not start.
Upon consulting the internet, we found that others had complained of a burning smell and the problem was with the control board. We disassembled the door panel and found that the control board had been completely burned through, and a connector and wiring harness were also burned and melted.
The control board is mounted in a plastic cradle, and the top of the door has a large plastic tray. We feel that there was substantial risk of a major fire and that the product should be investigated for recall. In addition, the fumes that were being emitted as the product burned up were potentially toxic and dangerous to humans and pets.
Kitchenaid had replaced this unit in 2009 since our original dishwasher developed a leaking tub, which was guaranteed forever. That unit was bought from a big box store in 2007.

Our dishwasher burst into flames and smoke. I unplugged it under the sink. It filled the house with foul smelling smoke. we opened the doors and set up fans. I could see the top control panel was burnt, meted and warped with smoke damage coming out of both right and left ends and the latch. I removed the inner metal panel of the door and we could see all the wires black and a widespread burned and melted area with a hole melted completely through the circuit board and connections all fried. also a burn hole back into the dishwasher. I used a plastic garbage sack slid over the dishwasher door and secured with tape around the bottom to contain the foul smell of the burnt parts so we could sleep later on after running the fans for 3 1/2 hours.

Kitchen Aid Undercounter Dishwasher Started on Fire Model KUDP01FLBL0 Serial FM4201561
Started dishwasher yesterday morning, July 21th 2014....thankfully I was home. I was sitting in my home office about 15 feet from kitchen. Thought what I heard was the faint sound of a coffee grinder being used in the kitchen. Went to see what the noise was and saw smoke coming from around the top of the dishwasher door. Proceeded to open the dishwasher door, kitchen filled with smoke. After the smoke cleared I looked at the bottom inside of the dishwasher thinking a piece of plastic may have fallen on the element. That was not the case. Door was extremely hot and could see the smoke coming out from INSIDE the door. Shut off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher then proceeded to removed the screws on the panel of the inside of door to see if in fact the cause of the smoke was in the door. Upon removing panel could plainly see the circuit panel caught fire and was burning at the time I first saw the smoke. We purchased this home 1.5 years ago, home was built in 2002, with this dishwasher and we also have a Kitchen Aid flat-top Oven/Range which we have also had nothing but what appears to be electrical issues. I will never buy another Kitchen Aid appliance....EVER. I am taking photos of everything and keeping the dishwasher for documentation purposes as well.

I was pulling out the top rack of the dishwasher to unload it. There is a plastic part on the wheels that broke off. The two wheels fell off causing the rack to came off its tracks. This caused the rack to come crashing down towards the floor.
I was able to catch the rack so there was no injury or damage.
I am writing because this is the second occurrence (after I fixed it the first time). The same weak (my opinion) plastic part broke. I think it a design flaw.
My fear is that a small child could be hurt if they were they were close and the parent were unable to catch it or if a young child unloaded the dishwasher themselves. The rack can become heavy when loaded.

Dishwasher ignited itself on fire. No injuries sustained. Only damage was to the dishwasher itself, as I was present to control the fire.
Dishwasher is 12 years of age; Never had a problem with it. Normal use, turned it on, and while I was present in the kitchen, after less than 10 minutes of operation the control board behind the display panel started popping, sputtering, sparking, smoking and instantly ignited.
Billowing black/grey smoke and bright white/orange flames from the operators panel, I opened the dishwasher door and the flames started to subside, with the smoke still pouring out - smelling of burning plastics, insulation, and circuitry. While the door was open, the circuitry for the control being shorted, the dishwasher spewed hot soapy water everywhere.
I slammed the door shut and flames started right back up again. I reached for the dry-chem fire extinguisher and the phone to call 911, but thought to unlatch the dishwasher door again. The flames subsided, and I terminated my 911 call attempt. I pulled out the dishwasher from under the counter to disconnect the power, and found it was hard-wired into the wall. I proceeded downstairs to turn off the associated breaker.
Through good fortune I was present at the time. Many are the times when I set the dishwasher to it’s task and head out the door to work. My wife, kitchen, home, my business at home, and my best canine friend are all very lucky that it didn’t happen while we were away.

The product, in the report: stainless steel KitchenAid dishwasher
My less-than-three-year-old high-end KitchenAid dishwasher was running on a 1hour wash/heat dry cycle when it made several loud pops that sounded like explosions, followed by a crackling/fizzling sound. My daughter and husband were nearby and raced to the dishwasher. My husband immediately cut off power to the appliance using the power switch on the wall. Then, he opened the dishwasher door and the kitchen and 1st floor rooms filled with smoke. Thank goodness my husband was home, as my daughter would not have known to cut the power. The damage could have been much worse.
On June 10, when the certified KitchenAid service technician examined the inside of the dishwasher door, he found charred parts and smoke damage. The parts that must be replaced include: control panel, control board, inline fuse, and complete wiring harness - only some of these parts are covered by warranty. He said that he had never seen anything like this. Of course, if my husband had not switched off the power immediately, this could have caused a fire and the technician would not have been the one to examine the remains of the dishwasher.
I contacted KitchenAid by tweet yesterday. They called me and have offered to pay for repair of my dishwasher. However, I am concerned that, if the fire was due to a manufacturing defect, the repaired dishwasher might catch fire again.

Kitchenaid Dishwasher Type: 677-0 MOD KUDS01DLWH3 SER FR1002759
Something shorted out inside the enclosed and factory sealed door of the dishwasher. The dishwasher had been running for a substantial period before the fire, maybe as much as 30-45 minutes. Fortunately, I was sitting close by and heard popping. I investigated and saw open flames shooting out the side of the dishwasher door. I immediately stopped and uplugged everything before damage to anything other than the dishwasher occurred. Flames continued to be visible for probably 30 seconds after I unplugged everything. Thick black smoke came billowing out. If I hadn’t been there, I’m sure it would have started a fire and probably burned the house down. If we had started the dishwasher and gone to bed, or if I wasn’t in the room at the time, it would have been much worse, maybe even life-threatening.
The dishwasher is fairly old. We bought it at least 5 years ago, and it may have been as long as 7-10 years ago. A

I noticed smoke coming out of the side of the dishwasher door and shut off the unit. I opened the dishwasher compartment and could feel the heat on the inside of the Stainless Steel door. I have since Purchased a replacement circuit board and changed it out which also required me to repair the melted wire plug. I am currently using the repaired dishwasher.

On 3-10-14, we started the dishwasher. Kitchenaid KUDP01ILBL5 SER # FR2501653. After several minutes, while still in the kitchen, I heard a crackling/buzzing sound. Looked at dishwasher, and white smoke was pouring out of the washer from the washer door. Had to manually turn breaker off to stop washer, for as the smoke bellowed, the washer continued to run. House is now filled with foul electrical fire smell. Checked the Internet, and find out that hundreds if not thousands of these have caught fire in circuit board area (which is definitely where it was coming from). Please do a recall as soon as possible, as this surely would have burned the house down if we had not been standing right nearby at the time! The time to deal with this has come - people are going to be hurt or killed by these fires if something is not done. There is no excuse for this to be happening, even if the washer is almost 10 years old.

The consumer stated that the silverware tray that holds the silverware inside of the dishwasher was melted and “warped”. She had to use two hands and apply force to retrieve the silverware tray from the inside of the dishwasher. The consumer disconnected the dishwasher from the wall outlet and turned off the circuit breaker of the dishwasher. She discontinued the use of the product. 2/27/14- The consumer contacted the manufacturer and spoke with [REDACTED] (from Tennessee); he said that the dishwasher was not under warranty and that he would have to report it to their Safety Department. [REDACTED] transferred the call to [REDACTED] in the Safety Department, who took a report and offered to schedule a technician at the consumer’s expense. The consumer declined. The consumer is not interested in repairing the dishwasher. The consumer thinks that this product poses a fire hazard.
This product is not affected by a recall.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid undercounter dishwasher
KitchenAid undercounter dishwasher during normal operation. Spouse started dishwasher and went to bed. I returned home about 1 hour later to find kitchen full of smoke. Traced smoke to dishwasher. Dishwasher was stopped due to malfunction and fire. Removed control panel cover which revealed a blackened and melted green circuit board and melted circuit board cover and melted secondary cover. Dishwasher installed in wood cabinet with wood framing and facia above fire source ( control panel / circuit board). Disconnected power cord. Online research revealed many consumer reports of dishwasher fires which in some cases ignited surrounding cabinets. Testimony and comments from consumers of KitchenAid and Maytag dishwasher owners who were unable to get help from the manufacturer. Reports of these dishwashers being repaired and catching fire again.

The product, in the report: Black Kitchenaid dishwasher with stainless steel interior.
My dishwasher caught fire shortly after it wash started by my wife. I thankfully was sitting in the next room and heard what sounded like something shorting out. I hopped out of my chair and found smoke pouring out of the corner of the dishwasher. After opening the door I saw flames coming out of the backside of the same corner of the door. I took cover off of the top of the door to find that the control circuit board had caught fire and burned through multiple connectors and wires. Thankfully this was caught before it spread to the cabinetry and lord knows what else from there.

The consumer says that she turned the timer on to go off two hours after she left. The dishwasher never came on. She turned it on last evening. Fifteen minutes into the cycle it started sparking and black smoke emitted out of the dishwasher.
The consumer opened the door and it shut off automatically. She shut off the circuit breaker also. She says it appears the problem started in the control panel. Her husband tried to turn it on again but the same thing started to happen. The only way to shut off the dishwasher rat that point was to turn off the circuit breaker.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid dishwasher - color black - stainless steel interior - built in dishwasher
We have a Kitchen Aid dishwasher that caught on fire last night. My wife and I started a load of dishes, and shortly after smelled electrical burning and saw smoke coming out of the control panel area. Luckily we were sitting near by to see this. We quickly ran to the dish washer to open the door and shut it off. The dishwasher kept running with the door open. We then tried to hit the cancel button, and the appliance still wouldn’t shut off. I had to run down into the basement to shut power off to the dishwasher at the electrical box. Our kitchen was filled with smoke, and our whole house smells like an electrical fire.
*Also we would like to know if these washers are able to be safely fixed. We are sure of the extent of damage yet, as the repair man has not come yet. But have the replacement circuit boards been safely redesigned? We are concerned of still having a fire hazard in our house if we make repairs, as we’ve heard these dishwashers can catch on fire even when they are off. Any information or suggestions you could give us would be very much appreciated.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid dishwasher, model number: KUDK03CTSS1, serial number: FU4001106, stainless steel.
Our Kitchenaid dishwasher control board caught fire! I see that there is a class action lawsuit for some models but it doesn’t appear that anything has been done about this ongoing issue with Kitchenaid dishwashers. Our dishwasher was purchased in 2006, model: KUDK03CTSS 1, Serial number: FU4001106. We came home one day to a VERY potent melted electronic/plastics smell and discovered that the dishwasher was no longer working. When we had a repair person out, we found that the circuit/control board had caught on fire and was charred/melted through. The wires connected to this were also melted/charred. This is very scary as it could have easily spread and burned our house down. We are scared to have this repaired now as this appears to be an ongoing issue. Kitchenaid needs to recall these affected dishwashers before someone is killed by this defect!
