The product, in the report: Kenmore undercounter dishwasher, Model No. 665.17014400, Serial No. FR5104330
We turned on the dishwasher to Normal Cycle. After running for approximately 20 minutes, we heard a strange noise coming from the dishwasher. There was smoke coming from the vents. There was a pop and a small flame from the circuit board area. The dishwasher did not turn off when the door was opened, and it did not turn off when the “Cancel” button was pressed. We had to turn off the electricity to get it to stop running.
This was Kenmore undercounter dishwasher Model 665,17014400. Serial No. FR 5104330. We purchased it in November 2004. The motor/pump was replaced in January 2010.

The product, in the report: Undercounter white dishwasher
On November 9, 2011 a Kenmore undercounter dishwasher manufactured by Frigidaire, while not set to operate, commenced smoking, with fumes emerging from the front of the machine. Fortunately, the two tenants, watching television in the adjoining living room, smelled the smoke and one of them switched off the circuit breaker, thereby avoiding a fire in their residence.
CPSC has issued recalls for a substantial number of Frigidaire dishwashers due to corrosion of wiring from liquid detergent or timer hazards (Models starting with 587), but to the best of my knowledge, not this particular model.
The dishwasher that started to burn and emit fumes, while in the off position, was sold by Sears, and carries a “Sears Kenmore, Hoffman Estates, IL 60179” nameplate.
This is Frigidaire/Kenmore Model 587.15072201. The serial number is TH31820117.
The property at risk of fire from this dangerous dishwasher was built in 1692, but had all new wiring in 1990. It is separately listed on the National Register of Historic Places (the Rea-Proctor Homestead), and should not be destroyed by a dangerous appliance. Sears, when informed of the fire risk, failed to offer a free repair. Instead, they offered a $129 site visit, charge for any parts, and offer only a 30 dayt warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore dishwasher
Unit was not running, door was closed. We began smelling smoke and burning plastic. Due to past experience with this dishwasher catching fire, immediately recognized source and cut power to unit. Inspection reveals power supply board behind control panel had again caught fire melting some plastic components of door. Contacted sears immediately who denied assistance as product is outside warranty period. They also denied any previous reports of fire with this model despite the fact they repaired mine in 2007 due to same fire. I purchased unit in 2005, then in 2007 the power supply board caught fire during cycle. After filing complaints and dealing with Sears for nearly 3 months the finally honored their warranty and replaced power supply board. This fire could have been disastrous if we had been asleep or not home. Since first experience with kenmore dishwasher fire, I have not run dishwasher at night or while we were out. This time it started while unit was off.

While running through a normal cycle, the dishwasher made a sputtering electrical noise and began to smoke and shoot out sparks. Had we not been there to stop the dishwasher immediately, the entire kitchen would have likely caught fire.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher
Investigated burning plastic smell from my Kenmore dishwasher and found wires from the control board melted into other plastic around the door. Searched online and found kitchenaidfire.com, thank god. There are about 400 reports of fires from Whirlpool made dishwashers manufactured around the same period, all starting from the control panel. Called Sears and they said they can’t do anything until Whirlpool recalls them. Called Whirlpool and they denied they make Kenmore products, just some parts, so it’s not their problem. Incredible! This, despite the fact inside the dishwasher it says “proudly assembled in Findlay, OH”, where Whirlpool makes products, and it’s not a secret they, like many other manufacturers, make Kenmore products for Sears (just search “who makes kenmore”). Whirlpool denies any responsibility, so I guess they need a class action lawsuit going before they do anything.

The product, in the report: Kenmore dishwasher
Several weeks ago my Kenmore Dishwasher, model 665.17053400 serial number 3901353 sent a large spark across my kitchen and then started smoking heavily. Luckly my son saw it happen and called me and I was able to turn off the dishwasher and then the breaker immediately. I called Kenmore they said said I would have to pay for repairs, I checked on cpsc and it seems to fall under recall (release #05-123). Kenmore said it didn’t. I called cpsc, they said they would look into it and call me back, my case number [REDACTED]. I have not heard back from them and now I am forced to repair/replace this dangerous dishwasher on my own.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Our Sears Kenmore dishwasher,(Mod 665.16052400), had a fire occur in the control panel. Luckily I was home at the time and was able to shut off the circuit breaker providing power to the unit. Black smoke was coming from the front of the dishwasher and did not stop until the circuit breaker was tripped by me. Have other consumers reported problems like this about this model dishwasher? Are there any recalls on this product? The dishwasher was purchased in 2005. Considering the severity of the failure and the fact that the house circuit breaker did not trip, this could have ended in a house fire. Thank you, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Ultra Wash Dishwasher Stock 17382 Type 577-O
My dishwasher caught on fire. I had started my dishwasher and had gone to bed. After about 15 minutes or so I heard a strange noise and got up and went into the kitchen. There was black smoke billowing out of the top vents on my dishwasher and it had a very distinctive burning smell. I immediately opened the dishwasher door believing this would shut off the dishwasher. I was drenched with hot water as the water did not shut off and the dishwasher continued to run and fling water throughout my kitchen. So I closed the door and the smoke continued to flow. My husband went to the garage and turned off the circuit breaker and only then after a few minutes did the smoke dissipate. The plastic / electrical burn smell has stayed in our house for two days.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
10/18/2011 Caller started dishwasher, left kitchen to go into family room and watch television. Approximately five minutes after leaving kitchen she heard odd sound coming from kitchen, returned, saw smoke coming from control panel, smelled burning and was rushing toward dishwasher to turn it off when a six inch burst of flames shot out from the control panel which as she pulled the dishwasher door down went back in.
She pulled the plug to the dishwasher out of the outlet.
She and huband opened all the windows, doors to rid their house of the burning smell. Caller’s model is on one of the releases but not the serial number and so is not recalled, however she is asking that her model and serial number be placed on recall for fear of fire hazard.
She would ask that the public be made aware and that her dishwasher be replaced at manufacturer expense because she is also afraid of a potential continued fire risk.

Dishwasher was running. White, acrid smoke started pouring out of the upper right corner. Wife opened door trying to stop cycle. Cycle did not stop, spraying water around kitchen. Note additional smoke poured out of dishwasher. It was not steam. Note entire house smells from electrical burning. She closed door to dishwasher and called me. I came in, and immediately shut down power to house at main breaker. I then disconnected wires to unit in base of unit. I then shut down breaker to unit.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
On Friday evening, Sept. 23, I received a call from my wife telling me that she heard grinding, screeching noises coming from our Kenmore dishwasher. She went downstairs to the kitchen and saw smoke and flames pouring from the upper right corner of the door. She opened the door (very brave) and, thankfully, the machine stopped and the flames/smoke subsided. I told her to shut off the breaker, which she did.
I returned home Monday, Sept. 26, and called Sears - they dispatched a repair person on Wed., Sept. 28. The repair person said he had not seen this issue before, although he had seen what may have been a precursor on three previous calls. These involved heat damage in the control board area - the same area as that which burned in my dishwasher. He called his tech. people and asked if anyone knew anything about what might be the cause and, apparently, got a “no comment” comment - which he appeared to think odd.
In any case, he mentioned repairing the machine, but could not tell me what had gone wrong. I told him that, since no one appears to know what caused the fire, there was every likelihood that it may burn again and that repair was not a satisfactory resolution.
I called Sears again this morning, after they had received the repair person’s report, and was told, at first, that they were ‘oh so sympathetic’, but that they hadn’t heard about this problem before and therefore would only be willing to grant a a partial discount on the parts for a repair. I reiterated that their product was a fire hazard, that there is ample evidence “out there” (including on this website) that this was no isolated incident and that their apparent lack of concern was endangering the public. They then upped the ante to offer a free repair. I told them that I would think about it, but I’m really not comfortable with a repair if they don’t know the cause.
For anyone else who has had this problem, I suggest visiting www.kitcheaidfire.com to read the 200+ accounts of those who have posted there.

MyKenmore Elite 665 model control panel caught on fire. I was upstairs and my two daughters are yelling that something is burning. I come downstairs to find my kitchen full of smoke. The front of my dishwasher, the plastic has melted, there is soot on the stainless steel. We opened the control panel and everything is melted. I can not imagine what would have happened if I were not home. I have tried to call Kenmore but was transferred 3 times. I want this thing replaced, I know it is not the first time this has happened. We are not the original owners, if it broke fine, but this could have burned our home down or injured someone in my family. Doesn’t Sears or Kenmore care about that. I have seen numerous complaints about this same issue online, people have gone to the local news agencies just to get the word out, do I need to take it that far? I need something done rather quickly to fix this situation. I have photos that I can pass on.

Started diswasher and about 5 minutes into the cycle, the control panel started to smoke heavily and soon after flames were shooting out from the handle . Quickly opened the door and disconnected the circuit breaker. The flames stopped but smoking continued for several minutes, and the terrible burned out odor from the components lingered in house for more than one day till I decided to remove it from the house.

Our Kenmore Dishwasher Mod 665.16293400 Serial FR4904673 caught fire. The unit was operating normally for approximately 15 minutes when we smelled smoke consistant with the smell of an electrical fire. We noticed smoke coming out of the dishwasher and what appeared to be a small blue flame inside of the control panel. We opened the dishwasher but it did not turn off. The buttons were not operational and we needed to turn the outside breaker off in order to stop the fire. The control panel was so hot that it burned my hand. After several hours of run around by Sears and Kenmore, we are filing this report and plan further action. In reiview of internet complaints, there appears to be many other instances of these units causing fires.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dishwasher
The person is an investigator reporting an incident on behalf of a consumer. The consumer set her dishwasher and went to another room in her house. The consumer heard a pop sound 30 minutes later and returned to her kitchen to find that her dishwasher caught fire. The investigator is unsure what cycle the dishwasher was set to. The consumer called the fire department to extinguish the fire. The response time was 8 minutes and 42 seconds. The fire department extinguished the fire with an extinguisher.
The dishwasher was purchased approximately in 1991. The product is portable so it didn’t spread fire through her home. The dishwasher is burned and it is a total loss. The contents of the dishwasher are also totally lost and the product suffered extensive damage at the control panel. The investigator feels that the product is involved in recall 96-133. The consumer has yet to call the firm and the retailer. The consumer was not injured by the product. The flooring was burnt and the house sustained extensive smoke damage.

The product, in the report: Kenmore dishwasher manufactured by Whirlpool. Black, under counter
The past three times that we have run our Kenmore dishwasher it has produced a burning smell and white smoke during the wash part of the “smart wash” cycle. The smell is coming from around the control panel and not from within the dishwasher. Each time the smell and smoke got worse. The last time we used it the smoke filled our kitchen. We have stopped the dishwasher mid-cycle each time it has happened and are no longer using the dishwasher. We have consulted a repairman who said this was a recurring problem with Kenmore dishwashers manufactured by Whirlpool during this time period and that we should discontinue use because it is a fire hazard.

Our 7.5 year old Kenmore Elite dishwasher had been running about 15 minutes when it began making an unusual grinding noise. Within a minute smoke began rolling from the vents on the door and from the seam between the control panel and the lower door panel, lower right corner. The top right panel of the door was hot to the touch. We stopped the cycle by opening the door. Upon closing the door (in an attempt to cancel the cycle) the control panel no longer functioned.

The product, in the report: stainless steel built in dishwasher Kenmore Elite top of the line
In September 2010, our (from Sears) Kenmore Elite model #665.1747 - 3300 caught FIRE. At the time, the fire dept came out and was able to limit the damage to just the unit and the surrounding area. Sears really didn’t work with us very well. They passed us to Kenmore who passed us to Sears and back and forth we went. The Kenmore Elite IS part of a recall however, the ending digits are not - solely because we were told that the unit was top of the line and so expensive that they weren’t including them. Nice. We hassled with this for weeks. We didn’t want to purchase a new one only to later be told that we would get a replacement and not reimbursed. So we waited - and hand washed. Until finally in Nov we broke down. If it was a staring contest, we lost. Kenmore and Sears won. We purchased the Maytag using whatever credits we could get and in the end spent $851.98 for the new dishwasher. Because this was really part of a recall and on a technicality it was not covered. I am still upset this many months later. But I still feel VERY upset and burned, literally, that we had no dishwasher for 2 months, had to complain nearly daily, hassle with Kenmore, complain to Sears, get very upset which in the end upset my chronic health issues to the point, I had to stop the process, give up and give in. What I would like is Kenmore to do the right thing and refund us the full cost of having to purchase a replacement since their unit caught fire - again, at no fault of our own - on a unit they fully knew had issues and was in their recall. But that seems like that will never happen. This isn’t me trying to get a free ride or take advantage of Sears. This is me trying to get justice. To get really what is owed to me. The cost of the Maytag we purchased was $851.98. (reg 949.99)I haven’t gotten anywhere with Sears or Kenmore on the recall issue - I haven’t gotten much anywhere with any of this. We were/are a loyal customer to Sears and of Kenmore products, who did nothing wrong except have their dishwasher catch fire in middle of the night, causing fire department to come and us to evacuate then spending 2 weeks getting the smell of burnt plastic and wiring out of the house. We had the expense of staying elsewhere because the air was so thick it was hard to breathe. All the horror we went through, blessed that the whole kitchen or worse, house didn’t burn down. The firemen said we were SO lucky that once it had started, it really could have taken off. We also had damage to the surrounding area and tile work - all items we had to pay for. Nothing got covered. I would love the whole $850 refunded to me which was the cost of a new unit. I know - I ask a lot. But imagine yourself, asleep, 3am, kids and dogs in the home, and you smell something burning. You find your high end dishwasher on fire. And then no one helps you even though it is on the recall list. You hand wash for weeks. You give up. You purchase a unit that doesn’t come close to the one you had before and aren’t 100% happy with but make do. The fire department reassured us we did nothing wrong. The control electrical panel caught fire. Something about how they are now using cheaper parts that can not handle the amount of volts going through the unit. The fire department themselves has had TWO dishwashers catch fire in the last year.....both Kenmore. Our unit was the Kenmore Elite 665-1747 -3300 and I truly believe that ALL their units in that section was recalled EXCEPT ours and they really did say it was because it was the expensive line therefore not cost effective to them to add that to the recall because people with higher budgets tend to just pay to replace a unit than hassle with a recall process. If they added it to the recall then they would be replacing units that might not have issues and the cost to Kenmore would be too high. This offended me. I guess it doesn’t pay to buy high end. Buy cheaper so they will replace it when it burns up? Our house could have burned down. Thankfully it didn’t. The local Sears admitted that one other unit the same model had caught fire recently as well. Going online I am seeing this model has issues. Our family could have been killed. We are so thankful that at 3am we were able to smell it and get out of the house before too much damage was done. In the end, we had a stinky house with a hole in the wall and hand washed for 2 months and didn’t get reimbursed or compensated for this. Not for the inconvenience, not for the clean up, not to have the wiring checked and replaced by an electrician, not the cost of the repair mans service call and repair to the melted freeze lines that were melted in the fire, not the worry it caused our kid to have to leave his home in middle of the night with firemen rushing through.......it was misery and in the end - we paid for it. Completely. This is NOT right.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller was in another room from the kitchen, smelled smoke then came into the kitchen and saw smoke coming out of the upper right corner of his dishwasher. Under the control panel it was black where he assumed flames were coming from around the door and maybe inside the door. Caller states that either the dishwasher became extremely hot or there were flames involved due to the blackening of the door and because when he removed the control door all was melted inside. Caller has taken pictures of all the electrical burning within the control panel and scorching of door.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller was watching television, dishwasher was running when he smelled burning odor. He went into kitchen where he saw dishwasher door had smoke coming out of it. He opened the door to the dishwasher thinking operation would stop but it didn’t. He was now trying to shut the door back with hot soapy water coming out of it and landing all over the floor. He got door shut back and went to circuit box and threw circuit breaker off which is how it has remained. He back to the dishwasher, opened the door, felt panel and found it to be extremey hot which is how he said he knew that was the problem. Panel was not warped or melted because dishwasher had only been in use approximately one half hour. He called the manufacturer this morning who advised him that his dishwasher was recalled but not for the panel, it is recalled due to the motor causing fires. He is reporting to CPSC in hopes to get this dishwasher recalled also recalled for the panel.

The product, in the report: Kenmore ultra wash dishwasher mod 665.17379300 ser # FP3901937 Stock #17379 Type 3 575-D Black in color
On the date listed below, the Kenmore Dishwasher was turned on in the pots and pans cycle. About 15 minutes into the wash I returned to the kitchen and found the dishwasher billowing out a large amount of smoke. I tried to turn the unit off first by opening the door but the unit kept running. I then tried to turn it off with the off button, this also would not turn the unit off. I then shut the circuit breaker off to kill the power to the unit. Once the power was eliminated the smoke dissipated.
If I had left my house or been gone for a period of time, the dishwasher and the house would have caught on fire.
We looked up the model number 665.17379300 and serial number FP3901937 for recalls. We only found that the same model number was listed but a different serial number sequence
I then contacted Sears and informed them of the problem. They gave me a case number and sent a Sears Technician to inspect the unit. He stated, the control panel was burnt & would need to be replaced. We chose instead to purchase a new dishwasher, rather than take a chance on this happening again.
Being an Aircraft Technician I took the unit apart and found the circuit card burnt through as well as the wiring harness melted and the plastic case melting and showing signs of preliminary ignition. Assembly Whirlpool p/n 8539379 REL. circuit card number R4MOWYMA. I have pictures and the circuit card assembly in hand.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dishwasher Model# 665-17022401 Ser#FS2408216 White in color
Purchased a Kenmore Dishwasher Model# 665-17022401 Ser#FS2408216 and come to find out this product had a recall February 25, 2005. Whirlpool/Kenmore confirmed the recall. Also see http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PREREL/prhtml05/05123.html. When we purchased this product it was June 15, 2005 and Sears installed the product in our home June 21st, 2005. Sears never disclosed at the time of purchase that this product had been recalled. Water leaked from the motor area. Due to the product malfunctioning we decided to replace this product as we went to remove we discovered it had been leaking from the motor area.
My family has sustained great financial and physical damage to our home due to the neglect of Sears & Whirlpool by not disclosing a product recall when purchasing this product at their retail store. Our Kitchen cabinets and whole floor has to be replaced due to the recall of this product and as well the mold due to the leaking of this product. We are currently in the process dealing with homeowners insurance and several contractors to determine the told physical damage and cosmetic to the house which could include structural damage. If Sears had not sold us this recalled dishwasher we would not be in this situation with damage to our home and the health risks associated with water and mold damage.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, White
Dishwasher controll board caught fire. About 15 minutes into the wash cycle I heard a loud electrical pop and than saw smoke coming from the dishwasher door. I tried to shut off the dishwasher by first pressing the cancel button and then by opening the dishwasher door. Neither worked. The dishwasher kept running and smoke continued to come from the diswasher door. I then had to shut the power off by switching the breaker off at the house breaker box. The control board and components were significantly burned, charred and melted. Because I turned the power off quickly no additional damage was sustained.

The Kenmore Dishwasher, Model # 6656.17382300, Serial # FR0704396 purchased in November/December 2004 from Sears experienced a sever electrical short. It started a small electrical fire due to a short. Luckily the homes dedicated curcuit breaker, GFI worked properly and shut off keeping the damage to a minimum. I have called Sears, Whirlpool, Kenmore trying to let them know about the safety hazard with little to know success. At least I have been sucessful putting it on this site.
