The product, in the report: Expensive $1,780.00 or so Kenmore Elite dishwasher. Super quiet, hidden controls on top, turbo zone, 6 cycles, 5 options, electronic scroll display. Stainless steel inside and out . Standard under counter size.

Husband was sitting at table and heard noises, then smelled terrible plastic/electrical smoke coming from the dishwasher. Immediately stopped it but couldnt find anything. Tirned off electricity and stayed around until we were sure there was no active fire. Researched it the next day , thought it was a motor, but found the door panel electrical box and wires black and melted .. even the fiberglass melted! So glad we were inside the house to catch it! We have never had work done on the door, but the electrical box was NOT screwed on like the soap dispenser, etc. instead it was secured with black tape which disintegrated with age!!! Our house could have burned down because of poor quality manufacturing!!!

We called 911 and fire department came and unplugged it completely and kept outside the house.
One of the fire fighters gave a personal advise that If I were you I will not repair this dishwasher, I don’t want to take risk. I will rather buy a new one.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore dishwasher with “5 year Guaranteed Best Protection” Sears plan. I believe that the dishwasher is 19 years old! See attached photo which has 08/03 notated.

I recently purchased a Sears “Kenmore Ultra Wash Dishwasher” along with a 5 year protection warranty (Sears receipt is attached) with photos of injury and product defect which caused the foot injury. Fortunately, I did not lose my foot or toe(s)! I used the product myself one time and discontinued it’s use after the first use. I might add that I also had to wait for a missing part for the hose to connect to the sink. I was moving the dishwasher away from the sink and felt excruciating pain in my left great toe being caught by a sharp plate under the washer, which rather severely cut my toe. I am a disabled Army veteran who has suffered from a toe injury during service, in the same left great toe, which has also affected my feet, legs, knees and hips, etc. This injury has worsened some of those bilateral conditions. Please refer to the attached photos of the injury of the left great toe.

9/3/2022: The dishwasher caught fire, during use. She called the fire department and evacuated the home.
The fire department came and removed the dishwasher from the home. The flames stopped on their own when I turned the dishwasher off.
The fire department believe that the fire started at the circuit board, because it was melted. There was also fire damage to other parts of the dishwasher, near the control board.
The cabinets in her kitchen were also damaged.
A week prior to the incident, the dishwasher was making a loud noise during use. The consumer had technicians examine it. He recommended dishwashing cleaner be used for hard water buildup.
9/3/2022: The consumer called the manufacturer and left a voice message with the firm’s Executive Office and is waiting for a return call. I never received a return call.
The consumer said if she was not home, her house would have burned down.

Our dishwasher was turned on and running, but then smoke started billowing out the side of the dishwasher. We quickly turned it off, unplugged it and pulled it out of the cabinet space it’s in. Plastic surrounding parts of the motor are melted and the dishwasher almost caught fire. This could have burned our house down, caused significant damage, or could have injured my family.

The product, in the report: This is a Kenmore Elite branded dishwasher. It is stainless steel, with black control panel. According to [REDACTED] this dishwasher was manufactured by Whirlpool.

My Kenmore branded dishwasher control panel caught on fire. Yellow smoke was emitted. My wife had turned it on for a wash cycle. It was running when I entered the kitchen and observed the yellow smoke. It was also making unusual sounds. I was able to turn it off and disconnect the power before the fire spread. I am unaware of any injuries that may have occurred, though my daughter and I did inhale some of the smoke that was emitted.

The dishwasher was in use, when the consumer noticed the smell of burning wires. He immediately stopped the operation of the dishwasher.
A little while later, he removed the dishwasher door and found that the power wires (and the copper) melted completely. The control panel was singed and the 2 main power wires melted completely through and separated from their connection. None of the items that were placed in the dishwasher to be cleaned were damaged.
He tried to call the brand name company, but could not get a live person. He was only able to reach a department, where he could schedule an appointment.
The consumer read about a class action suit settlement on these dishwashers and contacted, who he think is the manufacturer (which was listed in the settlement). The staff at the law firm he spoke to, said that his model was not included in the settlement. Nothing else transpired.

34YO male. On Sunday, November 29, my wife and I were watching TV after putting our kids in bed and starting our dishwasher. Less than an hour into the wash cycle, around 9pm, we heard a loud popping sound in our kitchen and shortly thereafter smelled a strong chemical/burning odor, though we saw no visible smoke. The door near the dishwasher controls was very hot to the touch. Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model 665.14762N510 serial F53201235 malfunctioned after a loud popping sound during the washing cycle. Circuit breaker tripped circuit. Waited 15+ minutes, opened dishwasher, used fan to try and blow odor out open kitchen window. Nothing inside the machine seamed unusual besides it stopping mid-cycle, still holding water, nothing on the heating element. Scooped water out the next day, unplugged machine and opened door panel revealing melted wires, melted control panel housing plastic and control panel circuit board blackening where electrical fire occurred. Description of Risk of Harm: The unit caught fire unexpectedly while running at night. This risked fire damage to the house as well as to 5 occupants sleeping here (2 parents, 3 children). Thankfully the house electrical breaker tripped, and the fire went out before it could catch surrounding furniture. The entire house still smells of burnt plastic.

My dishwasher control panel caught fire in the middle of the night. I had set it to run a delayed cycle in the evening and at 2:30am my smoke alarms were going off. The front of the door under the control panel had melted and the whole kitchen was filled with the smell of burning plastic and smoke. It’s not super relevant, but it was 20°F outside, so it was a very cold night airing out the house.

My Kenmore Elite dishwasher model# 665.16293400 caught fire last night. I came up from downstairs to find my house full of smoke and the smoke was pouring out of the top of the dishwasher door. It also scorched the side of my litchen base cabinet. We took the door apart and discovered that the circuit board and wiring had caught fire.
I tried calling Sears but could get no place other than being transferred a few times.
From what I can see online this has happene dto many people and there still does not seem to be a recall on this product. I just thank god that I was home at the time or I may not have a house left to ocme home to.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher This model dishwasher was recalled in 1996 for the same problem. (Fire in the door wireing) Apparently the problem was not fixed.

Consumer reported that the dishwasher was placed in use and halfway through the cycle, his spouse smelled a burning odor which was followed by smoke which started to engulfed the room. The unit was unplugged to contain the fire. The smoke eventually dissipated and they had to ventilate the house due the smoke odor.
The manufacturer was contacted and they advised that the dishwasher was no longer under warranty and suggested that he reported it to the agency.
Caller feels that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

The consumer indicates that she ran her dishwasher and approximately twenty minutes after having started it, she smelled smoke coming from her kitchen. The consumer and her husband rushed to find out the smoke was being emitted from the front of the dishwasher. The consumer’s husband opened the dishwasher and the unit kept running even though it should not have; once opened, sparks came from the front of the dishwasher panel and hit the floor. The consumer tried to turn off the unit but it would not do so thus she switched its circuit breaker off.
The consumer switched the breaker back on a few minutes later and the unit started running again. The consumer switched off the breaker one last time.
The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation; the representative she spoke to informed her that she could pay out-of-pocket to have the dishwasher repaired.
The consumer states that the unit is used once daily.
The consumer plans on keeping her dishwasher for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
We turned the breaker on once more this morning 11/18/19 - 8:55A.M. & the dishwasher automatically went on with the door open & smoke began immediately,

My wife was running the dishwasher. She was in the living room and hear a popping noise coming from the kitchen. When she entered the kitchen there was smoke coming out of the top of the dishwasher. She turned of the power and then opened the door. When she did she noticed heavy black smoke coming out a vent at the top of the door. When i got home the next morning I took the back of the door off and found the main control panel had black soot and a hole that had been burned into it. When I removed the control panel and opened it up the main control board was completely black with soot. If she hadnt turned the power off when she did we could have lost our house.

Running a typically sized load, typical food remnants. There was an electrical buzzing sound, and then acrid smoke emitted. I disengaged the door latch, and unplugged the dishwasher. An arc fault interrupter breaker (ACFI) in the main panel tripped as well.
The smell was so bad that I removed the door panel, control panel, wiring harness, and finally the entire unit. Soot was present in several locations, and a connector had melted. There were several scorch marks on connectors and the control board.

While unloading the clean dishes from the dishwasher, we determined that was the source of the smell and noticed the melted plastic around the top right corner of the dishwasher. There were smoke stains on the surrounding cabinets and counter top. I removed the panel from the inside of the dishwasher door to find the melted control board.

The power cord on my Kenmore Ultra wash dishwasher gets very hot and the plug is separating from the wire. I have been using it in this condition for several years with out incident but I do not dare leave the room in case something happens. The serial number is FF2606665 and the Model number is 17621690. Is there a recall for this appliance? How do I remedy this?

Dishwasher was filled with dishes and utensils after dinner, started as usual and about 45 minutes later the dishwasher started to release dark black smoke and sparks of fire and then the dishwasher fuse shorted out and the dishwasher died. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN THE LIFE OF THIS DISHWASHER THAT THE MACHINE WAS ON FIRE BUT SEARS WILL NOT PUT IT ON RECALL LIST, MY FAMILY COULDVE BURNED AND DIED FROM THIS FAULTY DISHWASHER!!! THEY MUST ACT AND RECALL THIS MACHINE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED

I ran the dishwasher on a 4 hour delay cycle. It should have been finished during the middle of the night, but at 6 am. it was still running with water cycling through it. The counter tops were hot to the touch and especially hot (too hot to touch) at the back of the dishwasher. I immediately cancelled the cycle. Five minutes later, my husband opened the dishwasher door and the heat set off the smoke detector in the kitchen. He closed the door until it cooled sufficiently. Inside, the plastics cups were misshapen due to excessive heat and one glass tumbler was cracked. The plates are now etched and rough/crazed. Even my flatware feels rough, now.

I put in a load of dishes and turned my dishwasher on. After a while, I smelled fumes. Upon entering my kitchen, I realized the fumes were coming from the dishwasher. I shut it off and opened it. And noticed that the heating ring located at the base of the dishwasher had melted away the plastic connecting pieces that held the ring in place. The whole house smelled horrible and I was horrified at the thought that this could have started a fire. I have not turned it on since because I fear what will happen. I literally fear for my life, that it’ll burn my house down.

“I put a load of dishes in my dishwasher was laying on my couch and smelled something awful & then walked into my kitchen and saw flames coming out the top of the dishwasher and counter. I then tried to put it out but the smoke was too thick so I got my kids and animals out and as I was on the phone with the fire dept. I saw sparks shoot out the front of my dishwasher then fire department showed up”

This consumer is the Captain at [REDACTED] Fire and Rescue in California reporting that his unit responded to a fire with no casualties or injuries but that was caused by a dishwasher. The homeowners son who was upstairs when he smelled smoke followed it to the kitchen where he saw that the dishwasher was on fire. He contacted the fire department then extinguished the fire with water from the kitchen sink once the neighbor turned off the breaker. There are no injuries being reported This caller contacted the manufacturer but states that they were of no help.

Kenmore Dishwasher was finishing cycle (I think) and heard loud popping and crackling sounds and smelled electrical smoke and saw smoke coming out of front of dishwasher. Opened dishwasher and smoke continued to come out of vent in dishwasher and latch area. Turned off circuit breaker and smoke continued to come out of holes. Crackling stopped. Front of dishwasher was extremely hot and inside of door was extremely hot. Removed front door cover and saw burnt plastic, burnt wires and burnt insulation.

On the evening of 4/23/18 at approximately 9:00 pm I set my 2 YEAR OLD Kenmore dishwasher on a 2 hour delay wash cycle. (I like to run the dishwasher at night so it does not interfere with showers, laundry, etc during the day time hours.) At 11 p.m. I heard the dishwasher start. I went to bed. At approximately 2 am (4/24/18) I was woken up by my daughter claiming that our dog startied barking, woke her up, she’s hearing weird noises and there is a horrible smell in our house. I told her it was probably the dishwasher running and it was fine. She insisted that I get up and check. When I get up to go to the kitchen I smell something that smells like plastic burning and figured something had fallen on the heater coil of the dishwasher. When we get to the kitchen - there is a haze of smoke and the smell is overwhelming. I open the dishwasher to find that nothing has fallen or is melting on the coil but there is about an inch of water in the bottom of dishwasher. I run to the bathroom and before I can come out my daughter is screaming that water is all over the kitchen floor. As I come down the hall back to the kitchen (I had left the dishwasher door open) I see sparks then flames shooting out of the dishwasher door and there’s a sizzling sound coming from the door! The door is so hot that you cannot touch it - just the handle. I call my parents for help and my dad comes down and disconnects the washer from electricity. I called Sears to see if there’s any warranty/protection for this- was transferred to their repair who told me “sorry about your luck and sorry this happened to you, we can send a repairman out to fix it and here’s Kenmores recall # - you can call to see if it’s been recalled” - to calling kenmores recall number to be told no it hasn’t been recalled. When the dishwasher was disconnected- there was nothing wrong with the wiring - it was the motherboard/control panel that caught fire. I have no doubt that had our dog not woken my daughter up- the dishwasher would have caught fire and our home would have been lost - worse yet - we would have died. This dishwasher was only 2 YEARS OLD!

On the evening of March 10, I was awakened by an acrid, burning smell in my home. There was visible smoke in my kitchen and I traced the source to my Kenmore Dishwasher. I usually run the dishwasher at night. After disconnecting the power, I took off the front panel to investigate. I found a portion of the control board along with several wiring harnesses attached to it charred and partially melted. I took photos to document the damage. The dishwasher apparently shut itself down in mid-cycle, but from the looks of things, it could have developed into a fire.

We ran the dishwasher before we went to bed (about 11pm) as we usually do. When we came out to the kitchen (around 6:30am) & went to empty it in the morning we discovered it was still running the “heated dry” portion of the cycle. The (granite) counter was hot, the cabinets surrounding it were hot, everything inside was untouchable, it was all so hot. (We had a few “dishwasher safe” utensils which were ruined because they melted or partially came apart.) Upon running the dishwasher the next time with the “heated dry”cycle turned off, the dishwasher leaked water onto our kitchen floor. FYI -- It is a 4.5 year old product!!!!

Dishwasher was purchased 2011 and does not get heavy use. We started noticing that the plastic wheels on the lower rack would fall off periodically and needed to be reinstalled each time. Two weeks ago the wheel fell off after loading the dishwasher and pushing the rack back into the dishwasher before starting the washing cycle. We were not aware this had happened until we experienced a toxic smell coming from the dishwasher. Upon opening the dishwasher door smoke poured out with the toxic smell from the plastic wheel which had come off and was melting on the heating element. Luckily we were home and were able to stop the dishwasher before a disaster happened. Since then we have found many complaints from consumers regarding the wheels coming off the racks. This dishwasher is also manufactured for various brand names. Sears was notified of this, which could become a very serious problem, but their only answer was to pay for their service man to repair the problem which costs about $400. They had no concern about the safety factor involved for their customers

We started our Kenmore Elite Dishwasher, model 665.12783K310 over night as usual. Over 7 hours later when we awoke it was still on the rinse cycle! It was smoking, steaming and everything plastic in it was melted. The countertop was so hot you couldn’t touch it. We are lucky the house didn’t burn down. It’s only 4 years old so this is a surprise. Both Kenmore and Sears gave me a bit of a runaround and they are saying there is no recall and only a 1-year warranty. Awful. Thanks.

(08/20/2017) The consumer filled the dishwasher and set it on normal . After the dishwasher was running for about five minutes, it made a strange noise. Flames and smoke were coming from the top of the dishwasher’s door. Also, there was the smell of burnt plastic.
The consumer called the fire department, who came out to her home. The fire was out when they got there but the unit was still smoking. The submitter said the dishwasher was already in the home when he moved in sometime in 2015.
The submitter put the dishwasher to a normal cycle and after approximately 30 minutes the submitter heard a loud noise. The submitter smelled a burning plastic odor and noticed smoke emitting from the circuit board. The submitter believes the dishwasher was close to the dry cycle. The submitter shut off the dishwasher and then cut off the circuit breaker.
The submitter indicated that the circuit board has burn damages and the wires are melted.
The submitter contacted the firm today and informed them of the incident. The submitter was told that his dishwasher was not recalled and the could not provide a free repair or replacement. The submitter was then transferred to CPSC.

The consumer indicates that he walked on his carpet living room and noticed it was wet even though nothing had been spilled. The consumer dried the carpet, and hired a plumber to inspect his home and find the problem. The plumber checked all possible sources and found no leak; when he removed the kick panel of the dishwasher, everything appeared normal. The plumber cut a hole in the wall however was unable to find a conclusion.
The consumer’s wife ran the dishwasher and noticed that the carpet was wet again. Upon further inspection, the consumer noticed that the unit was leaking when he removed the kick panel. The consumer stopped the dishwasher, and removed it from its location. The consumer canceled the follow-up plumber visit.
The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to informed the consumer they would schedule a Service Technician to inspect the dishwasher on 07/20/2017.
The consumer indicates that the damages to his home include carpets, wall, cabinetry, baseboards; all damages total an estimate of twenty-thousand dollars.
The consumer indicates that the dishwasher is used approximately once or twice weekly. The consumer plans on keeping his dishwasher for at least next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

My Kenmore dishwasher filled my house with smoke from the dishwasher. Upon checking the dishwasher after I turned it off and the smoke cleared. I look in the dishwasher on the element to see if something had melted on there. There was not anything. I looked under the dishwasher and pieces of the bottom of the dishwasher coating maybe had melted or caught on fire and when I looked further there were some really hard crispy pieces of this rubber coating falling off on the floor. I am not sure what caused it to catch fire but I am afraid to use the dishwasher because the smoke was very toxic smelling. I will call for a repair but I am not sure that it is something that can be repaired.

The consumer indicates that during the past couple of weeks, on two different occasions the dishwasher did not shut off after running its cycle; the consumer had to shut it off manually. The consumer reports a burning smell when he opened the dishwasher. The dishwasher is also not washing the dishes properly, making the consumer run the same dishes more than once.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to informed him his unit is not included in a recall and hence they could not assist him since it is out of warranty.

6.13.17 CPSC: The consumer signed the form, made a copy and is returning it to you with this update: - While attempting to use the machine, it has a foul smell that continues to emanate from the unit. - There is a black film build up on all of the internal washing parts inside where the dishes are placed. The collection gasket-basket has some film on it. - We cannot use the machine at all. It is mechanically unsafe. This far, the consumer has not heard from Sears or anyone they represent. In the later part of the dishwashing cycle ... my wife and I heard a “hissing noise” coming from our kitchen. We immediately went to the kitchen and discovered that the dishwasher was emitting white smoke from the upper right portion of the dishwasher. We also observed a strong odor of something electrical burning within the unit. We tried to cancel the cycle ... but the cancel button did not appear to work. I immediately turned off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher. We left the door to the dishwasher open and aired out the house. The next day I partially disassembled the front door so I could access what I think is called a control board (to the top right). After partially disassembling the control board housing I was able to observe black burn marks in various areas of the control board. Lucky that we were in the house when this happened (and awake). Might have started our house on fire!

The circuit board on our Kenmore Elite dishwasher, purchased at a local Sears, caught fire last night. My wife, who was in another room of the house, said she heard some popping noises and when she got to the kitchen she saw flames coming out of the top of the dishwasher. She immediately unplugged it and that stopped the fire/issue. The dishwasher was running, my wife was doing a load of dishes, at the time of the incident. The house still smells like burnt plastic.
I just had the circuit board replaced by Sears Home Services in December 2016. The previous one was also acting up i.e. turning on by itself, not turning on at all.
I hate to think what could have happened if my wife had not been home.

02/28/2017 - On the lower rack there are four sets of two wheels, for a total of eight wheels. The axle pin that holds the wheels in place fell out, and the wheels came loose, falling out as well. The wheels then came in contact with the heating element, thus burning and melting.

I attempted to call Sears Home Services at 1-800-549-4505 when I found information online that there may be a recall on these models. Sears was not willing to do anything about it without the consumer paying for an evaluation of their faulty product. This is concerning considering if we weren’t home to open the breaker; we may not have had a home to come to.

My Kenmore under counter dishwasher’s upper tray is poorly supported by fragile small plastic wheels mounted on side brackets. These wheels have detached from their attachments on the side brackets. When the tray is pulled out for loading or unloading, the front tilts downward possibly causing anything in it to fall out. This appliance is only 3 years old and is only run twice a week.

(10/14/2016) The consumer stated that she was standing next to the dishwasher. She noticed smoke coming from the upper right corner of the unit. She turned off the power but the unit continued to smoke. When the power was turned off at the circuit breaker, the smoking stopped. After five minutes, the breaker was turned back on. The unit started smoking again even though the dishwasher was off.
The consumer turned the breaker off again. The consumer dismantled the door of the unit and saw that the circuit board was burnt and melted.
(10/18/2016)The consumer contacted Kenmore to advise the firm of the issue. She was referred to the Recall Department who advised her that her unit was not recalled. The consumer was referred back to the Kenmore at 888-536-6673. The consumer was advised that there was nothing that can be done and referred the consumer to CPSC.

There are two light-gray plastic rollers on each side of the dark-gray upper rack. The upper rack rides in tracks mounted to the dishwasher side. The rollers are secured to the rack by two plastic roller-retention stabs at each roller. Each roller-retention tab is roughly 2mm square and about 10mm long (eyeball estimate) and has a protrusion to keep the roller from coming off.
As the upper rack was being slid out to remove cleaned dishes, it collapsed without warning. Inspection revealed three of the four rollers had suddenly come off the upper rack assembly due to failure of the plastic tabs that held the rollers in place.
The upper rack was not loaded with excessive dishware. We only use it for smaller items - and usually half of the objects are plastic. The roller-retention tabs failed under remarkably light loading. Pictures were taken of the damaged components and part numbers molded on the piece were noted.

Was going to run my Kenmore elite ultra clean dishwasher, model number 665.1277, 665.1278. Had it loaded and notice the buttons were not responsive. My husband went to check the breaker and when he flipped it the dishwasher made a loud noise and sparks shot everywhere and a terrible burning smell came from the dishwasher. This machine is only 2 12 years old and was installed by a professional. No warning at all on this serious malfunction. I was nearly electrocuted. When I contacted Sears they said I had no warranty on it but I was welcome to purchase a 1 year warranty for $225!

We have a Kenmore dishwasher that is 4 and one-half years old.
The flatware/utensil basket in our Kenmore dishwasher has deteriorated to the point that flatware slips through and either could jam against the frame when one tries to roll the bottom shelf out or it may contact the heating element below directly. This can be dangerous when we have children emptying or loading the dishwasher.
We noticed this deterioration earlier in the spring and have ordered a replacement (at $44).

We were using the dishwasher as normal. About midway through cycle there was a hissing/popping sound. The front control panel had orange flame/sparking and dark black foul smelling smoke began appearing. We disconnected the unit. Dismantling unit revealed the control circuit board had caught on fire. The unit no longer turned on, had to replace.

(4/27/16) The consumer tried to set the dishwasher to a wash cycle but it would not start and none of the buttons on the control panel worked. The consumer checked the power and there was power going to the dishwasher.
The consumer indicated that the dishwasher was last used on 4/25/16. The consumer noticed after the cycle was complete the lights on the control panel remained on. The consumer could not shut off the lights and left them on. The following morning she noticed the lights were off.
The dishwasher has been repaired twice, on 10/26/13 and 11/15/13. On 10/26/13 the pump and motor was replaced. On 11/15/13 the pump, motor, clamp and control panel was replaced. The consumer indicated that the repairs were done by a Sears technician and covered under her extended warranty.
(4/28/16) The consumer removed the front panel and noticed that the circuit board was black and completely scorched. The consumer believes the dishwasher poses a fire hazard.
(4/28/16) The consumer contacted Sears to inform them about the issue and she was advised that her dishwasher is not recalled. The consumer was also advised that her dishwasher was no longer under warranty and any repairs done would be at her own cost.
The consumer indicated that the dishwasher was installed a few days later by a third party technician.
The dishwasher is used about 4-5 times a week.

(2/29/16 estimated) The consumer set the dishwasher to a wash cycle. Approximately 2 minutes later the consumer noticed smoke coming from the control panel. The consumer opened the door to stop the cycle and shut off the dishwasher but the smoke continued to emit from the control panel. The consumer then shut off the circuit breaker and shortly after the smoke stopped.

(name unknown) informed the consumer that his dishwasher was not recalled. The consumer was not sure if his serial number started with “FA” or “FR” and provided the Rep. with both serial numbers but the consumer was told that his dishwasher was recalled. The consumer was told that someone from Sears would contact him within 24 hours to arrange for a repair, free of charge.
The consumer has not received a call as of today, 3/7/16.
The consumer has not noticed any burn damages to the dishwasher but he has not looked inside the control panel.
The consumer states he uses the dishwasher twice a week. There are no prior incidents.

Within minutes of running the dishwasher and then heading upstairs, we smelled an electrical burning smell. We raced to the kitchen to find smoke billowing from the dishwasher. After unplugging the machine and letting it cool down, we realized that the source of the smoke was just behind the buttons. We disconnected the machine and found that the circuit board had burned a hole through all of the board, plus the housing and mount, and was burning through the front of the dishwasher door.

I am writing this letter to explain my disappointment with your company. On Saturday, February 6, 2016, I attempted to load my Kenmore Stainless Steel dishwasher and my middle two fingers, left hand, got trapped and was almost amputated in the opening of the dishwasher. I was unable to remove my fingers, I had to call the police and EMS to have my fingers remove. My fingers were wedged in the opening for more than 15 minutes. Can you imagine the amount of PAIN? As a result of this injury my fingers are now swollen and I have numbness and tingling to them.
I contacted your company on February 8, 2016 and explained my injuries and ask your customer service staff about claims and replacement of my unit. To date, I have not received a single call regarding my injuries. My wife made several calls and she was told a supervisor would be contact me. To date I have not been contacted. I hope this is in no way how you treat a loyal customer and not a reflection on the direction Sears is going.
I am very upset at the lack of resolve in this matter. My fingers has been numb and swollen for 5 days. I am requesting that you immediately contact me to replace your defective dishwasher. I am sure there has been numerous reported incidents about this particular Kenmore dishwasher. The opening framework is very dangerous and prone to injury.

It made a popping sound and then sparks and embers started coming out of the right side of the panel and falling onto the floor, followed by smoke and a burning smell. I feel very fortunate to have been in the kitchen right next to it when it happened and that I was able to turn it off immediately as well as the breaker. Dishwasher control panel burned. Turned on the dishwasher before heading to bed. Smelled a burning rubber smell. Saw that the dishwasher control panel was smoking on the right side. Hit cancel, but nothing happened. Opened the dishwasher door to stop it; of course it didn’t stop and it spewed out hot, dirty dishwasher. Closed the door, ran down the cellar to turn off the circuit before the fire could get out of control. Fortunately, that worked and the fire didn’t spread.

1.6 years after purchasing my dishwasher new from sears(5-31-2014), yesterday it stopped working and we could smell a weird smell. My husband hit the circuit breaker and took the control panel off. An electrical fire had obviously occurred and the circuit board was burnt and plastic cover melted. I contacted sears and they would not help nor even take the above info so they could keep track of this incident with this model number. I was told this is a rare incident and they had no concern. I did online research and found this is a common problem! Any safety devices did not trigger our circuit breaker did not blow nor did it trip anything in the unit itself.

Last night, at about 8:00 pm, our Kenmore Elite dishwasher exploded into flames and poured thick acrid smoke out of the control panel. Thanks God we were home. We usually turn it on when we leave in the morning or as we go to bed at night. I could not turn the unit off at the Control Panel (due to flames and sparks). I could not imagine what might have happened if we were not here to turn the breaker off on the electrical panel. I checked the Kenmore site, and the CPA site, and though our unit was NOT listed as a problem, it exploded into flames just like the MANY other Kenmore dishwasher that ARE listed. This is criminal that they only recall the units AFTER they catch fire. They must be using the same parts in my unit as in the recalled units. We were lucky, and I pray to God that no one else has this problem and loses life or limb. My throat still burns from the smoke. PLEASE warn other owners immediately! And get this unit recalled! P.S. While this incident happened on 1-11-2008, I want it on record with as many sites as possible. I sent this letter to the Consumer Protection Agency the day after the incident. Also to the manufacturer, Sears (where we purchased it), and Consumer Reports.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher (stainless steel tub)

The unit was delivered in Aug 2004.
The consumer started the dishwasher cycle and left the room. While the unit was possibly in the drying cycle, her son noticed smoke pouring out of the unit. He looked down and saw flames shooting out of the control panel. He opened the dishwasher door and the fire stopped.
The consumer stated that there was horrible plastic burning odor. The consumer stated that the control panel is burnt.
The consumer contacted Sears immediately. They informed her that they were surprised by the incident and that they will give supervisor the message in the morning. The consumer called back the next day because they did not receive a call back from the supervisor. The supervisor stated that there was nothing they could do in this matter. The consumer was provided number to contact Kenmore Products Escalation (800-479-6351; option 6). The consumer’s husband spoke to [REDACTED] who noted the incident and provided case # [REDACTED]. She set up an appointment to have a technician go out at the consumer’s expense (discounted price of $89). *Did not happen. The consumer was informed that when the technician comes for inspection, he will probably file a claim with Sedgwick. She also informed the consumer that she can give a discount off of a new unit purchase.
The technician is supposed to come out on 12/22/15. When technician came he charged a total of $148.00. He said he knew nothing about a discounted charge.
The consumer does not believe they should have to pay for anything as this was a safety hazard.
The consumer saw many complaints online regarding incidents with this model.
This model does not appear to be recalled.
The unit is no longer covered under the warranty. The consumer would like the company to replace the unit.
