The product, in the report: Dishwasher

This past winter we had a slow leak in our downstairs bathroom ceiling. We had a plumber to help determine the cause of the leak and he could not find the cause. He suggested we look up into the attic to see if the exhaust pipe had condensation on it. We called back and told him it did not. He stated that after the snow was gone he would insert a hose through the roof pipe and see if might be leaking around the connections. The snow and ice continued. We have two people in our household and usually turn on our dishwasher every other night. During Presidents week we had our grandchildren here for a visit. We had extra dishes that day. We turned our dishwasher on after lunch, and a half an hour later dirty water started pouring through our downstairs bathroom ceiling. I immediately turned off the dishwasher and called the plumber. He came and pulled out the dishwasher and found a hole in the tub. He proceeded to pull it out of the wall and more damage became apparent. The base cabinets were ruined and moldy. The wall between the kitchen and bathroom saturated and bathroom closet with the contents ruined. The laminate floor and possibly sub floor were also ruined. The ceiling in the downstairs bathroom was ruined. We contacted our homeowners insurance with State Farm. They covered a partial loss for the dishwasher only, none of the house damage was covered due to old mold. They told us to contact Sears. We did, then got referred to the Whirlpool Company. Then we were referred to Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc. They told us to provide them with two estimates for the remaining damage. Both estimates came over $12,000.00. We got a letter denying our claim stating we loaded our dishwasher improperly. There is a melted hole in the bottom of the tub, behind the metal clip that holds the bottom electrical burner component. The hole was very difficult to see unless it was pulled out of the wall. I feel the metal clip got over heated and melted the tub, not what they imagined . The possible explanation was a knife poked the bottom which seems very implausible. No matter how this occurred a plastic based tub should never be used on a dishwasher to prevent this from ever happening to anyone else.

Loaded dishwasher and started machine. While cleaning up other items I walked back into the kitchen and white smoke was pouring out of the top of the machine (where the latch and controls are located). I went to open the door and flames came out of the top right side about 6-9 inches tall. I immediately closed it and smoke kept pouring out but the flames died down. Kitchen smells like an electrical fire. Thankfully I was around. We usually turn the dishwasher on as we go bed. Never again.

DISHWASHER FIRE - Started a normal dishwasher/air dry cycle and within a few minutes there was a clicking noise and flames were visible coming out of the top control panel and vent. We quickly flipped off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher.
There was a lot of smoke and noxious fumes that lingered for more than 24 hours even with the house fully ventilated and the use of multiple fans. The house still smells as a result of the fire.
The dishwasher is about 9 years old and a part breaking down might be understandable, but the appliance catching fire is never, ever acceptable!
We are very fortunate that we were home and awake during the incident, because the outcome could have been much different - and the damage or loss of property (or life ! ) extreme.

Upon returning from a short walk I smelled an electrical fire in my home. I quickly identified the sources, my Kenmore dishwasher (made by Whirlpool), model 665.16572201, serial FP0802734.
After turning off the power and water, I unscrewed the mount and pulled it from the cabinet, and identified the source as the control board in the door, which was burn, melting the surrounding casing, and hot enough to cause minor damage both the cabinet and the counter, and the heat discolored the metal tub of the appliance. The thermal overload switch was charred but failed to trip (which is a second failure, and odd for a part known to trip without cause). With a melted board, the display was still operational. The motor was running during the dry cycle, and thus very, very hot - a second potential source of fire.
No personal injury was incurred, only property damage, which was limited by early detection and quick action.
Repair costs for destroyed parts is about $225 plus labor.

The consumer says the unit had shorted out and smoking almost immediately after turning it on. Had he left the house it could have caused a serious fire. He says smoke was coming out of the control panel.
He contacted Sears/Kenmore who said his model is not on recall. The consumer says they offered him a $75 gift card. He says all the wiring is burned out and had to disconnect the circuit breaker to get the unit to shut off.
The consumer says he and his wife were getting ready to step out and leave the unit running. Had he done so he said it could have caused serious damage.

The product, in the report: dishwasher with stainless steel tub

(06/12/2013) The consumer stated that his wife turned on the dishwasher. She then went to the basement. Fifteen minutes later when she returned to the kitchen she smelled smoke. The consumer stated that his wife saw smoke and flames coming from the left top of the dishwasher. She ran to circuit breaker and disconnected the dishwasher. The consumer stated that the flames stopped when the dishwasher was disconnected. The consumer stated that he unscrewed the control panel and saw an area where there had been fire.
The consumer stated that he searched on line for recalls and saw that a number of people reported the same model but different model numbers.

Fire in the dishwasher control panel. Hot enough and big enough to melt a significant portion of the wiring and plugs into a single mass. Fire self-extinguished.
Update from submitter 7/3/2013: The manufacturer responded to my complaint, but with a completely immaterial response. They stated that the dishwasher was subject to a recall in 2005. That much is true.. I’d like them to address my control panel fire. Thank you.

(06/01/2013) The consumer stated that he was getting ready to take his wife to the airport. She turned on the dishwasher. After about five minutes she started screaming. Flames were coming from the right top corner near the start button. She opened the door. A plastic type of smell was coming from the dishwasher. The consumer closed the dishwasher door and sparks came from the same place. The consumer turned off the breaker switch. When he unloaded the dishwasher, there was water standing at bottom. The consumer stated that he searched on the web site and saw that others were having similar problems.

The product, in the report: Black Kenmore Elite dishwasher

Had recently turned on dishwasher and happened to go back into kitchen, where I heard a pop and then saw smoke coming from the front of the dishwasher. I fortunately then stopped the dishwasher and unplugged it as well. There was an acrid burning smell enveloping the entire kitchen area which also created a burning sensation to the eyes and throat. I was able to troubleshoot the problem myself (upon calling Sears I was advised that since machine was no longer under warranty, I would have to pay for a service call and any parts that needed replacement despite the fire). I determined that a relay on the control panel had shorted causing the fire.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

The consumer says that his wife was in the kitchen while the dishwasher was running. She smelled something burning, and saw black smoke and yellow flames coming out of the far right of the dishwashers control panel. She immediately stopped the machine, and the fire quickly subsided.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer yesterday who advised him to call customer service. The consumer’s model number is listed in the recall for Release # 96-133. His serial number however is not within range and his unit is not included in this recall.

Dishwasher was running when I noticed sizzling and smoke coming from control panel. Attempted to open door but dishwasher did not stop running. Turned circuit breaker off. I then disassembled the control panel and found the circuit board had shorted and started to burn. The interna; fuse on the board did NOT blow.

The product, in the report: Kenmore elite utra wash quiet guard 4 (665.17054402) spontaneously burst into flame as described by other Kenmore, Whirlpool, [REDACTED], [REDACTED] owners and reports. Incident was contained within the control board area (possibly due to stainless steel tub and door vs plastic?).

Kenmore Elite dishwasher control board experienced failure that appears to include a minor fire as described by other owners of Whirlpppol, [REDACTED], REDACTED], and Sears Kenmore dishwashers. Dishwasher was started and wife went to run errands. It failed to complete the cycle and left water in the base of the unit. The unit would not start but lights would come on for diagnostic mode. Upon inspection it was discovered the control unit had a burnt area at prong P8, which separated the male prong from the board, leaving it embedded in the female plug (which was also melted). Additional burn marks and indicator on the inside of the control unit cover.

Kenmore Elite Dishwasher control panel started on fire during regular use. Our home’s circuit breaker was tripped and power was cut to the appliance. All the smoke alarms in our home were activated. Control panel is black and melted and the casing is melted almost all the way through. Home had to be aired out from a terrible acrid smoke smell. There were no recognized warning signs prior to fire that would have caused us to think the dishwasher was in poor repair at the time of the fire.

On the evening of April 7, 2013, my 10 year old son alerted to me to our dishwasher catching on fire. He happened to be coming downstairs for a drink of water after bedtime when he noticed flames coming from the dishwasher. The flame was contained and no injuries were sustained. I have contacted Kenmore, Sears and also Whirlpool, and no one claims responsibility. The only response has been that this dishwasher (manufactured in 2005) is out of warranty. Does it matter that the dishwasher is out of warranty when it catches on fire? Should any appliance catch on fire under normal circumstances? Is this normal wear and tear? Absolutely not! I’m very disappointed in the responses I have been given and no attempt to rectify the situation.

Caller is reporting that around 10PM on Monday she loaded then started her Kenmore Elite Dishwasher and prepared to go to bed. She sat down to watch news on television for approximately five to ten minutes then began to smell plastic burning, when she followed the odor into the kitchen and saw black smoke with sparks and flames approximately two to three inches high coming from the right side of the dishwasher. She yelled for her husband to shut off the breaker while she opened the dishwasher door. Once the breaker was turned off the flames and sparks dissipated. She hasn’t tried to use the dishwasher since incident. Caller is asking why there is not already a recall, and is requesting that a recall be generated with reimbursement. My Kenmore Elite dishwasher caught fire this morning. It is model #66517052400 and was purchased from Sears in 2005. The fire started in the upper right portion of the electronic control panel. It occurred without warning, filling the kitchen with smoke and a plastic smell. I was able to stop the fire by turning off the power to the dishwasher.

Last Friday evening (4/5/13), within ten minutes after our dishwasher was started, its electronic panel caught on fire. We were grateful that we were home as the flames most certainly would’ve spread to the rest of the house. When my husband opened the dishwasher door, the panel shut off and the flames stopped. However, there was still considerable smoke and the smell of burnt plastic coming from the appliance for quite a while after the fire.

We were running the dishwasher on the normal cycle, as we normally would when an unnamed hose ruptured (looking at the schematics*, it is the hose right below the number 9, not the one that the number 9 points to but the one actually located below it)...this caused water to leak all over the floor and come in contact with electrical parts.
When we called to replace the ruptured hose part (it should be under $5, as it is a short 1 inch hose) the company wants to charge $200 plus tax and shipping for a whole new motor. They don’t have the hose as its own replacement part - they simply want us to purchase a whole new motor assembly. There is nothing wrong with the motor.
1. The fault could cause a fire. 2. By not allowing a fix at a reasonable price they are encouraging people to replace with simple hosing from the hardware store, which is not proper for this cause and could cause even more damage or cause potential fire hazards.

In reference to Kenmore Elite under the counter dishwasher, model # 66515932000. I turned my dishwasher on today and after it running for a little bit I smelled a burning odor and I looked over at the dishwasher and I saw smoke coming from the button panel on the front of the door. I opened it quickly to shut it off and it kept running so I hit the cancel/drain button twice and then I went to turn the breaker off. I felt of the door and it was warm to touch. The previous day I smelled the same smell but couldn’t find exactly where it was coming from on the dishwasher but I noticed that the dishes were not clean.
I am glad that I was home to see the smoke and to shut the breaker off. It was scary that it kept running and of course the smoke was scary too usually where there is smoke there is fire but luckily I was home to shut the breaker off.

On Saturday morning, February 9, 2013, during operation of the dishwasher, the pump motor made a “kick” sound at which time thick black smoke was witnessed coming from the dishwasher. I was able to take immediate action, which included turning off the main power wall switch, opening all doors in the house, and utilizing a box to clear out the smoke. The dishwasher was in the early phase of a wash cycle, with the initial water still in tub, and the wash pump running. The settings were “normal wash” and “sani-rinse”.
Further investigation of the control panel revealed charred and melted components at the control panel assembly circuit board module (whirlpool p/n 8534963). The two large connectors (CON1 and CON2) were fused to the circuit board. Evaluation of the “hot spots“ indicate most of the damage on the component side of the circuit board is near contact P6 (heater), and near contact P10 (vent/small load AC) on the trace side of the board.

The dishwasher was in use. We heard a strange grinding sound from the kitchen, but then it stopped, so we didn’t go in to check. Within a minute or two I smelled an electrical-type burning smell. The consumer says she turned the dishwasher on. Twenty minutes into the cycle she smelled smoke. Her daughter started screaming. Half of the house was filled with white smoke and acrid electrical burning smell.

Consumer woke to the smell of smoke, consumer discovered it was the dishwasher emitting smoke. The dishwasher was programmed to begin regular cycle after the consumer went to bed. The consumer attempted to shut the dishwasher by opening the door but had to unplug the dishwasher.
The consumer removed the panel and saw it was charred and completely burned. The dishwasher has not been plugged or used since.

Recently I noticed water dripping into the basement from under the dishwasher. I pulled the dishwasher out and removed the panel from underneath and noticed a serious design flaw in the unit which has created a fire and water damage hazard. The Kenmore quiet guard standard Dishwashers heating element is installed using no washers and only a soft metal flexible twist-on retainer to hold the element in place. As a result the hot water enters the washer and as it reaches the heating element the water leaks (significantly) past the heating element and directly into a high voltage electrical connector that powers the high amperage heating element. The water leaks onto the floor and out of sight of the consumer (under the cabinets) until it has ruined the sub flooring.
This is a serious fire hazard as water and electricity are not a safe combination. During the observed wash cycle no internal fuses (if present) blew nor did a circuit breaker pop. If the water leak is significant enough and water extends out into the living space there is a high probability of electrocution to the consumer should they come in contact with the water which is in direct contact with 120 volt power source and the high amp heating element.

We purchased a Kenmore Elite Dishwasher when we moved into the house in 2004. The dishwasher caught on fire one night. It could have been disastrous. Luckily we were able to force the door open and pour water into the part of the dishwasher where the flames were coming out. It looks like an electrical fire located around the start button. There should be an investigation and recall of these dishwashers before someone dies.

The product, in the report: Under the counter dishwasher

The consumer stated that he was using the dishwasher and it had been on for approximately 1 hour and a half. The consumer stated that he heard a noise and started to smell an electrical burning odor. The consumer stated that his wife went into the kitchen and saw smoke being emitted from the upper right hand corner of the door.
The consumer stated that immediately turned off the break and the dishwasher stopped emitting the smoke within 30 seconds. The consumer stated that he could not see any visible damages on the dishwasher. The consumer stated that there were no damages to his home structure aside from the bad burnt odor.
The consumer stated that no one was injured.
The consumer stated that he contacted the manufacturer and they asked him to contact them back because there system was down.
The consumer stated that this product should be investigated do to the fire hazard it poses to the consumer.

Today my dishwasher caught on fire. It appears to be an electrical fire on the front of the dishwasher in the control panel. The dishwasher was running. In the furry, I can not be certain but I believe it was in the rinse cycle. The dishwasher is dead. No other apparent damage.

The product, in the report: Built in dishwasher

Kenmore built in dishwasher’s control unit on upper part of door caught fire. We were in the kitchen and were alerted by sizzling sounds. When we opened the dishwasher door, smoke and flames shot out and water sprayed over the kitchen since the cycle failed to stop. We were able to shut the unit down using the wall switch. The fire then extinguished itself. There was no damage other than to the machine itself, however had we not been in the room we most likely would have had a kitchen fire. This machine is 8.5 years old, so failure is not a big surprise. Nevertheless, the possibility of failure by burning up represents an unsafe design feature.

During a wash cycle the dishwasher caught on fire. This was 01-09-2013 at approximately 8:00 CST.
We were informed of the fire by a cat (oddly) who started acting odd.
Upon entering the kitchen we found the kitchen full of smoke and smelled of burning plastic. Black smoke was coming from the door of the dishwasher at the top mostly from the right side. Flames also could be seen to the right of middle.
When opened the water was shooting upward with force.
The circuit breaker was pulled and the water turned off. When the flames died I removed the front to make sure the fire totally extinguished and not smoldering.
Sears was contacted via phone and online “chat”. They finally took my statement as a “feedback” on 01-10-2013 3:00 CST but the feedback did not include any method to contact me, to know how bad the fire was, to know what parts were involved, or even the model. So ... I assumed they really do not care.
If we were not home I have NO DOUBT the house would have caught on fire! Period!

(01/07/2013) The consumer stated that the incident happened about 8pm. He turned the dishwasher on to the normal cycle. About 15 minutes after he turned it on, his 6 year old daughter went into the kitchen to get something. She came running out of the kitchen yelling that there was smoke coming out of the dishwasher. He didn’t think much of it because steam comes out of the dishwasher. He went to look at it, and thick smoke was coming from the control panel on the right side. There was a pungent smell and it was about to ignite. The consumer opened the dishwasher to turn it off. It stopped smoking. He closed the door. Immediately smoke started to come out from the right side of the control panel. he immediately open the dishwasher again. He unplugged the dishwasher. The dishwasher was full of water. The consumer stated that you could actually smell the smoke two days later.
The consumer stated that he called a repair company. He was told that they could work on it, but advised him to call the manufacturer.
He did a search on the internet and a lot of thing came up. He checked to see if his model was on recall.
(01/08/2013) The consumer contacted the manufacturer. He was told by Kenmore to contact Whirlpool. He was told by Whirlpool to contact Kenmore. The consumer stated that he called twice and was told the same thing.

The consumer stated that the dishwasher was in use for approximately 10 mins and he noticed that there was flames and black smoke emitting from the front of the unit. The flames were 2-3 inches high. He opened the dishwasher to stop the cycle but water erupted from the dishwater. He used the circuit breaker to switch electricity off from the unit, but when he switch it back on, the unit would start.
1/8/13 The manufacturer was contacted and he was advised that his model number was not a part of the recall.

Kenmore Dishwasher Model #587.15173400 started smoking from the control panel/handle while NOT in operation. After loading some dirty dishes, the door was closed and minutes later, smoke started billowing out of the handle while all the lights on the control panel blinked. The front of the control panel was very hot and the unit smelled of burnt plastic/electric fire. Sears’ Customer Service transferred my call around a bit, and ultimately, because there was no recall for this item, stated that my only avenue for resolution was to pay for one of their technicians to come look at the unit.
I’d rather just buy another dishwasher from anywhere other than Sears. Had we not seen/smelled the smoke immediately and cut off the power to the unit, there’s no telling what damage could have been done. Sears didn’t seem to think this was outside of the norm, and in fact, I’ve found multiple incidences of this same occurrence on various forums and websites. Truly unfortunate that a company wouldn’t offer a better resolution considering what kind of damage could have been done due to their faulty product.

Woke up this morning and the kitchen smelt bad, I noticed black residue on top left of Kenmore elite dishwasher 665.16052400, dishwasher appear to be burned out.
Did some research and this is apparently common, but very troubling, a dishwasher is not supposed to burn, this was the control panel burning not say a rag that we put inside , nothing inside was burned. We routinely run the machine at night while we sleep as it is the best time, and many times when we leave home, the house could have burned down
Very troubling there is no recall, Sears says they will send a technician at my expense who will tell me the panel needs replacing, this is not about the machine, if the panel had just stopped working after 5 years (the machine is 7 years old) then I guess that was its life, but it should not catch fire.

The dishwasher was running through a normal cycle. It suddenly started making a popping noise and black smoke started rolling out. We opened the door to stop it, thinking something might have fallen on the heating element. The noise and smoke immediately stopped. We saw nothing on the heating element, so we closed it to start again. It started up again and the noise, smoke, and this time flames immediately started. We opened it to stop again, and the noise, smoke and flames stopped. After closing it a third time, and opening, the flames continued and we could see flames and sparks coming from the top right of the door at the control panel. We were able to put the flames out, and turned off the circuit breaker. Thankfully we were standing nearby when the sparking and fire began so we caught it very quickly before the fire got out of control.

I was running my Kenmore elite Model: 665-15953000 when black smoke started pouring out of the control panel. I opened the door it didnt’ stop so I threw the breaker. I looked up on line and similar models had been recalled for this problem but apparently not this one even though there had been a number of similar complants. Our ~9 year old Kenmore dishwasher - model 587.15072201. was off the other night. We were in the kitchen and I closed the DW door. Black smoke started pouring out of the control panel and did not stop when I opened the door. We turned off the circuit breaker and called Sears repair. They quoted a price for the repair and said NOTHING about known problems with this model. We set up a repair appointment. Because it was such an alarming problem, we then looked on the Web and found numerous reports to the Consumer Products Safety Commission and others about the same problems with this model.
I called Sears again and told them that I knew of others with the same problem with this model. They refused to replace the DW and again told us we’d have to pay to have it fixed and that there was no recall on the model - they would not even discount a repair! Our house could have burned down.

Consumer stated the dishwasher was in use for about 15-20 mins, in a regular cycle. The consumer began smelling burning smell and saw smoke coming from the dishwasher. Consumer stated she pushed the clear button and opened the door to shut off the dishwasher but did not work. The consumer then tripped the breaker to shut off the dishwasher. Consumer stated even with the dishwasher off the blade still spun and shot water everywhere. Consumer stated that an electrician was called to come out within an hour of the incident. The electrician checked the breaker, disconnected the water supply and electrical wiring in the dishwasher and moved the dishwasher outside of the home. The consumer was told by the Electrician that the motor had burned out. Consumer stated the heating element was replaced to remedy a previous recall # 05-123, by Sears in 03/2005 for repair. The consumer spoke with Whirlpool (no name given) - 12/7/2012- Where she was told that because it was already remedied they would not service the dishwasher. There were no injuries or property damage, besides the motor of the dishwasher.

I have a Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Model # 665.1643300. Smelled smoke about 10 minutes after starting it. Luckily I was home. I went in the kitchen a saw smoke going up from the circut board and flames shooting out from under the board and up toward the countertop. I unlatched it. It was still smoking, snapping, and shooting out flames. I turned the electrical switch off under the sink and it stopped.

(12/03/2102) The consumer stated they they were in the basement. His wife went upstairs to watch tv. She heard some crackling in the kitchen. She went to check and saw heavy smoke in the room. She also saw flames coming from the control panel. She opened the lever on the door which cut the electricity and distinguished the flames. The consumer stated that he disconnected the dishwasher at the circuit breaker. He removed the top panel and took pictures. The circuit board is completely melted together.
The consumer stated that his concern is that if this happens to someone who is not at home, their home would be gone.
(12/03/2012) The consumer stated that he contacted Sears. A technician came out on 12/04/2012. The technician looked at the dishwasher, and made a call to Sears and reported it. The technician gave the consumer a form and then left.

On Saturday 10/20/2012 I started the dishwasher. Luckily I remained in the kitchen. Just as I was putting an item in the microwave which is housed above the dishwasher (within fewer than 10 minutes of its cycle starting) FLAMES and SMOKE began shooting from the top of the dishwasher where the touchpad/control panel is located. I attempted to push the cancel button to stop the cycle; however, that did not work. The only way to stop the dishwasher and its fire was to force the door open. I was able to stop the dishwasher and fire before a family member arrived with the fire extinguisher.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a replacement of report 20121124-A8B54-2147461627 which I reported earlier, which included facts which I mistakenly reported from an incorrect but similar incident.
Upon waking to a horrible smell, I found our Kenmore dishwasher Model #665.17464300 Filling the room with choking smoke and the dishwasher making an “electrical arcinng sound” spewing sparks and flames just below the start button. Attempts to shut the dishwasher off failed, opening to door didn’t stop it and the only way to stop the dishwasher from running and burning was to shut off the circuit breaker at the main box.
After the smoke had cleared and the room was somewhat breathable again, a further investigation showed the main circuit board charred, power connectors to the board were destroyed, the plastic housing which the board sits in was nearly burned through. If we had not home, and I had not been wakened by our dog and the horrible smell, I fear that the house very possible would have burnt down.
Upon further investigation on the internet, I was extremely surprised to find out that there have been hundreds and hundreds of these issues reported across most manufactures (all made by Whirlpool). The “safety” features which Whirlpool claims are built into this dishwasher DID NOT WORK.

The consumer says he turned the unit on. 5-10 minutes into the cycle it was pouring smoke out through the front door panel. The consumer says he tried to turn it off by opening the door and shuttting it off but it continued to smoke.
The consumer says he is a service technician and says the circuit board was charred. The thermal fuse was melted. he caught it in time to prevent any serious damage. He says that he contqacted the manufacturer and the retailer who refuse to talk to him and to make it right.

Started the dishwasher on normal cycle. After about at some point during the cycle, my 11 year old son noticed the dishwasher smoking. We could smell a plastic or electrical fire smell filling the kitchen. I opened the door to stop the cycle, bu it would not stop. I flipped the dedicated circuit breaker and the smoke and washing cycle stopped. Turning the breaker back on started the cycle and the burning smell again, so I left the breaker off.

I started the dishwasher as normal on a regular cycle in the evening. About 15-20 minutes into the cycle I heard an unusual noise coming from the dishwasher. I came into the kitchen and could smell melted plastic and could see smoke (not steam) coming out of my dishwasher. I then opened up the door and when I did a snapping sound occurred and a horrible odor came out with more smoke. This happened again when I opened the door again to show my husband. I then removed all the dishes, unplugged the appliance, and left the door shut. I had a repair person come to check on it who said there was a fire in the front panel and the entire dishwasher would need to be rewired, which is illegal for them to do. She called to the service department to check on a recall, and they told her they had a number of written complaints about the dishwasher but did not see a recall. I then called Sears and after approximately 6 phone calls I was told there was no recall and was informed that all service calls related to any faulty appliance is directly reported from the service company to the Federal Agency in charge of recalls. I then contacted the service company and they told me that Sears had misinformed me: I would have to report the incident myself. My concern is that someone could have a fire, lose their home, or worse yet, their lives, because there is a fault in this dishwasher. If I had gone to bed, been out of the house, or even been in a different part of the house and not heard the noise, who knows what could have happened.

Shortly after starting the dishwasher the control panel starting smoking and had flames coming out. I attempted to shut the power off at the control panel as I called 911. I was sitting about 10’ away from the dishwasher when I heard a loud sizzling noise that sounded like a short. I had no idea what it was but when I looked into the kitchen I saw smoke billowing out from the upper right side of the dishwasher door. The smell was acrid. I opened the door to see if something fell on the element. Nothing had fallen the smoke was coming from the control panel on the dishwasher door. I ran and turned off the power at the breaker. I investigated it more by removing the door and the control panel cover to discover the inside of the control panel completely burnt! If I had not been right there at the time I’m sure the kitchen would have been in flames. The smell was horrible and it still lingers. Thank God I was nearby and was able to take quick action. Needless to say the dishwasher was removed and I still have the charred remains.
I have since seen and read many reports of the same thing happening to others. I wonder why nothing is being done to stop this. Why no recalls? Why no notification? Why are stores still permitted to sell faulty equipment that can cost people their lives?

The dishwasher was running through its normal wash cycle when we heard a loud popping noise. We were startled to find that the dishwasher door had blown open - while the dishwasher was still running!
The cause of the failure was a blown heating element. To get the dishwasher to stop, we had to close the door and then open it again. The dishes were covered in a fine grit . The heating element wire was exposed. The circuit break did not blow.
We are so glad that this happened when we were at home!

Control panel on my Kenmore 665.1435.3301 started smoking shorttly after starting. Had to manually shut off the breaker. Burned up the control panel and connectors. Luckily we were at home and able to stop from burning down the entire home. Understand this has happened numerous times on Kitchen Aid, Kenmore & Whirlpool dishwashers. I will also contact Whirlpool but my understanding is I will be forced in to joining a class action suit for any resolution of this defect.

The product, in the report: Under the counter dishwasher

The consumer stated that his wife placed the dishwasher on the pats and pans scrubbing setting for approximately 15-20 minutes. The consumer stated that his wife started to hear loud noises, but was not sure where it was coming from. The consumer stated that she noticed flames at the bottom of the dishwasher door. The consumer stated that he had to use the fire extinguisher put out the flames. The consumer stated that the junction box that wholes the wires located at the bottom of the dishwasher seemed to be where the fire started. The consumer stated that he noticed plastic had melted and fell on the floor. The consumer stated that the cotton sound proofing material burnt. The consumer stated that there were no damages to his home structure. Also he stated that no one was injured. The consumer stated that he contacted the manufacturer and they would be sending a technician on 10-25-2012 to service the dishwasher.

At approximately 11:00 am I loaded dishes into my dishwasher and began the normal cycle on my 2005 Kenmore Elite. Model number 665.17462300, Serial number FR3116690. About 15 minutes into the cycle, I was on the computer in the dining room when I started to smell a foul odor and started to hear a sizzling noise. I looked into the kitchen to see black smoke billowing out of the front of the dishwasher and just then, flames shooting out of the right hand side where the dishwasher vents. I ran into the kitchen and decided to try and stop the cycle by opening the dishwasher. I could accomplish this as the flames were on the right and I popped the handle from the left. The flames went out and the smoke continued for about 30 seconds or so.
I immediately started searching on the internet for what to do and who to contact. It looks as if I am certainly not alone in what happened to me. Sears did recall this model of dishwasher however, only the plastic tub kind and not the metal ones. The metal ones would “cost” too much money to replace I read. I am shocked and saddened by this lack of responsibility on Sears part. I am just glad I was at home so that my home did not burn down and no one in my family was injured.

I was getting the kids ready for bed and I smelled burning plastic. I followed the smell to the kitchen and realized it was coming from my dishwasher. I opened it thinking a piece of tupperware or something had fallen on the heating coil. Instead I found the one part of the heating coil bright red and flaming. It had started to melt the rolling dish tray and utensil basket.
I called Sears today to report the problem and was sent to the “Recall Department”. They refused to give me any information and just told me to schedule a “service call”.
That’s when I hung up and came to this website.

The consumer says she turned the unit on. Ten minutes into the cycle she heard a crackling noise. Black smoke started coming out of the right hand side of the dishwasher. She opened the unit, and it stopped burning as soon as she opened the door.
She had to open all the windows from the toxic smell emitting from it. She still can smell the odor two days later.
She says that there was no indication that it was going to do that.

Kenmore dishwasher control panel started on fire during wash cycle. I contacted sears with the issue and was told that there was no recall of this model and that nothing would be done for me. One interesting thing is that a technician had been sent to my home to replace the motor on the unit about a month or two prior to the incident. To supposedly prevent a potential fire. I had never been contacted about this recall prior to my investigation related to a problem we had were the heating element burned a hole through the plastic tub of the dishwasher. The tub was not replaced but there was a recall on the pump motor system. I had patched the hole with epoxy type material i obtained from a local appliance repair company. I retained the burned control panel and disposed of the remainder of the dishwasher and replaced with a new unit with no compensation from manufacturer. These units in my opinion should be recalled as there seems to be many of them with the same control panel fire issue.

About five minutes into the wash cycle, our Kenmore dishwasher began making popping/fizzing noises. I observed whitish-grey smoke and a flicker of flame emerging from the dishwasher vent and the top of the door, behind the control panel. There was a terrible chemical smell, like burned plastic. I immediately grabbed our kitchen fire extinguisher and blasted the dishwasher -- this stopped the burning. Pressing the Cancel button failed to turn off the machine, so I switched off the breaker toggle at the control box.

I’ll go to Sears tomorrow to see if there is a recall or any reimbursement but I doubt I’ll have much luck. Just very happy that I was home when it happened.

(9/8/2012) The consumer stated that her dishwasher was running on the normal cycle for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The consumer noticed that the upper right corner of the door begun to emit smoke. The consumer immediately opened the door and checked to see if anything was touching the heating element, which there was not. The consumer shut the door back and let the cycle continue. Approximately 10 minutes later flames started to shoot out from the upper right corner of the door. The consumer immediately tripped the circuit breaker for the dishwasher and the fire died out. Damage was limited to the dishwasher. CONSUMER ADDED: Faulty control board on dishwasher caused wire harness to catch on fire. $699.00 estimate to repair per sears technician on 9/10/12
-The consumer stated that this was the 1st incident since purchasing the unit in 2004.
(9/8/2012) The consumer stated that she contacted the retailer, but she got the appointment line.

During the wash cycle, my Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model 665 15273400 filled the kitchen with smoke and got very hot. When I opened it, the cycle continued, throwing water out of the appliance and all around the room. It would not shut off. I had to go to the panel box and turn off the breaker. The smoke was very acrid, and has settled all over the house. There was no evidence of a fire, other than the smoke. I believe it would have caused a house fire if I hadn’t caught it in time.

On August 26 we started our Kenmore dishwasher, purchased 12/2004, and left for about 1 1/2 hours. When we got home there was smoke pouring from the right front side of the door and the house smelled like an electrical and plastic fire. We opened the door and turned off the machine. We called a technician who looked at it and said the circuit board was all burned up. He has not gotten back to us about the specific cost to fix it, but thought it would be about $200. We started looking online and saw that this was a major defect in Kenmore dishwashers and that Sears is not doing anything to address it. When I contacted them they said they would give me a $65 discount towards a technician’s service call or a $50 gift certificate. This does not seem sufficient since it could have potentially caused much more damage.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel built-in dishwasher

Dishwasher was running for about 20 to 30 minutes when it began spewing smoke from the door. We opened the door and the dishwasher continued o run, ignoring all button presses. We ran to the box and turned off the breaker. The entire floor was filled with a powerful white haze of melted plastic and electrical wire. There was a low sheen from the melting plastic buttons, indicating that there was a fire in the door. Afraid of possible electricity still present we placed a wet towell over the odor, opened the odors and windows and went outside. After 15 minutes, we checked and eventually removed the interior door panel, and exposed the control board. It was charred with burnt wires. There was burned plastic and the control pod was partially melted. The entire door was severely damaged. I later noticed lung irritation and believe I received several lungfuls of smoke from burning plastic

The consumer stated that she placed the dishwasher on the wash cycle. Approximately 10-15 mins later she smelled an odor of electrical fire. She discovered that the dishwasher had stopped in mid cycle and there was water in the unit. She noticed that the control panel was scorched. The circuit breaker was used to disconnect power from the dishwasher.
There had been no previous incidents and 1 service call for noise heard in cycle 1 year after purchase.
8/20/12 The consumer contacted the manufacturer but was being transferred to different departments until the call was disconnected.
The consumer feels that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be reported.

My Kenmore dish washer model 665.17372301 was in the middle of a washing cycle. I smelled burning plastic and went to the kitchen to investigate. The dish washer was running with a strong burning smell coming from the dishwasher. I opened the dishwasher door and the dishwasher kept running (did not cease washing). Canceling the cycle did not stop the dishwashing cycle. A trace of smoke came from the exhaust port of the dishwasher. I pulled the plug for the dishwasher to stop it from running.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dishwasher, Model #665.17032400

About 20-30 minutes after running my Kenmore dishwasher -- model no. 665.1703#### -- my daughter informed me that there was a smell coming from the kitchen. I went to the kitchen, the dishwasher was running, and faints wafts of white smoke were coming from the control panel. The smell was definitely an electrical fire type smell. I pressed the Cancel button on the control panel and the dishwasher continued to run, even past the 2 minute Cancel (Drain) cycle. I then opened the dishwasher door and the dishwasher continued to “run” -- the arms were not turning, no water was running, but the sound of the motor was evident. I then turned off the circuit breaker and that finally killed the dishwasher. When I turned the circuit breaker back on, the dishwasher started “running” again. I turned the circuit breaker off and left it off. The smoke eventually stopped and the very warm right side of the control panel eventually cooled.

Dishwasher contol panel sizzled and sent burning plastic smoke into kitchen. I opened the door to stop the cycle, but power to the dishwasher was still on and would not cancel. So my son flipped the breaker switch to turn off the power. We then disconnected the dishwasher and took it outside to feel safer. Like many people we normally start the dishwasher at bedtime but are lucky I was in the kitchen when this happened. It is evident that these dishwasers are a danger and should have been recalled long ago.

The product, in the report: dishwasher

7/28/2012) The consumer stated that she was using her dishwasher on the light wash cycle. Approximately 30 minutes into the cycle the consumer heard an unusual noise coming from the unit. When she entered the kitchen she saw smoke coming from underneath the handle and from the side of the unit. The consumer tried to push the cancel button, but it did not function at the time. The dishwasher door was then opened, and fire sparks were shooting out of the dishwasher. She immediately shut the door and went to trip the breakers.
(7/30/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and they advised her that they would replace the control panel, but they did not have any available tech in her area at the time and to call the next business day.
(7/31/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and an appointment for scheduled for a technician from A&E to come out to her home.
(8/3/2012) The technician called her and advised her that he was coming out to repair her dishwasher, but it would be at her expense and not the manufacturer’s. The consumer advised the tech to not come out to her home because she was not paying for the repairs.
(8/3/2012) The consumer contacted the manufacturer again and they advised her that her model was included in release#05-123, but her serial number did not match and they were not liable for the repairs.

Our Kenmore dishwasher caught fire in the control panel area of the door. We had started it on our way out to the store, and our daughter was left by herself in her room. When we returned, there was an awful smell in the kitchen. The dishwasher had caught fire. Fortunately, it had self-extinguished, and did not spread. I have turned off the power at the breaker.

Caller reporting that her dishwasher purchased June 28th, 2004 with date of manufacture estimated at January 2004 caught fire July 11, 2012.
July 11th, 2012 caller had been running dishwasher for approximately 30 to 40 minutes while she was outside with her children. She entered her house to find smoke with strong smell of electric burning. Dishwashers front top panel was black with smoke coming out of the vent.
She looked under the sink and saw that somehow the electrical cord had come unplugged. She opened windows, put fan in kitchen to dispell smoke.
She felt the front of the dishwasher and it was not hot to touch.
This dishwasher is recalled with release# 05-123 and consumer has reported that she found what she believed to be her dishwasher on recall. While speaking with retailer a repair visit was scheduled but while repair techs were on the way to her house they called her to state that they had nothing showing this dishwasher on recall and so they could come to her home but would be charging her for a repair visit. She told them not to bother.
Hotline checked recalls and found her dishwasher on recall, advised her but she said that she had already spoken with manufacturer who said they were doing nothing for her.

The caller stated that while the dishwasher was in use for approximately 10 mins. There was a flash of light and then there was smoke emitting from the front of the unit. The control panel was irresponsive and the circuit breaker was used to switch the unit off. There was black soot on the front of the dishwasher. The unit is now inoperable.
7/4/12 The retailer/manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that a service rep would be sent out at an expense to her.

Turned on dishwasher and it seemed to go through the cycle. Kids were home and a strong plastic burning smell came from dishwasher. The dishwasher stopped working. Checked the breaker and it did not trip. Opened the control panel and there was fire damage. A large capacitor fell out with burn damage. The circuit board and the ribbon cable were black and melted.

The consumer says that the control panel started smoking as the dishwasher was running. He says the unit was only on 15-20 minutes before it started smoking.
The consumer says that he tried to open the door but it kept washing so he could not open it. The consumer says the only way he was able to shut it off is by cutting off the circuit breaker.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer on 6-26-2012 who told him the unit is not on recall and there is nothing they can do. The consumer says that if they had not been home it could have caught his house on fire.
The control panel is blackened and burned. The model number is on recall but the serial number falls outside of the range of the recall under Release # 05-123.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

On 6/24/2012 the consumer had her dishwasher on the anti bacterial setting and was running for approximately 15 minutes. While in another room she heard a loud pop, which caused her dogs to start barking. She immediately went into the kitchen, where she saw flames coming from the control panel. The consumer used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. She never unplugged the unit because she didn’t know how. There were no surrounding damages in the kitchen, but the entire dishwasher was destroyed.
The consumer stated that this was the 1st issue that she had with the dishwasher.
The manufacturer was contacted 6/25/2012 and the consumer was transferred through different departments. She finally got in contact with someone whom let her explain the situation, but didn’t ask any questions nor did they giver her a report number of any kind.
The consumer then contacted a local repair place (RC Appliances) and they came out to her home on 6/26/2012. After the technician inspected the unit he determined that the control panel was the cause and the entire unit needed to be replaced.
The consumer has a home warranty whom she would later contact in regards to getting a replacement since the manufacturer has not offered any assistance.

I purchased a Kenmore tall tub dishwasher in 2006. It recently developed a leak. I looked closely at the tub and observed water dripping from underneath. I looked inside the tub and there is (what I thought was food stains) a burnt spot directly under the heating element on the left side of the unit. This burn has created a noticeable crack in the tub and that is where it is leaking from. I have searched various web sites and came upon your report on these dishwashers being recalled for the motor catching fire but donot see anything specific to the heating element burning the tub. I have found several other consumers complaining about the same problem on various repair forums. My dishwasher is a KENMORE MODEL# 665.17033403, SERIAL# FT2210139. If my dishwasher is not included in a recall, I believe it should be due to the extreme danger the heating element poses as a fire hazard, along with the fact that the unit has to be replaced or I will always be concerned about a leak.
