The product, in the report: Black Kenmore Dishwasher Model 665.14319/N411 Serial Number F50803167
This dishwasher was installed brand new in our newly built home. We moved in 8-22-15. On 12-7-15 we started our dishwasher after dinner dishes and a short time later my husband seen our cat staring underneath the dishwasher and that is when he saw sparks flying out from under it. He went to our breaker box but couldn’t find the right switch. (He was worried about grabbing the cord to unplug) He walked back into the kitchen, sparks still flying and then a loud pop noise. Dishwasher was dead. Sears can’t come for 3 weeks. I see there is another model that is recalled for fire hazard. Serial number for our model is F50803167

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite dishwasher Model# 665.17269400
About 30 minutes into a normal dishwasher cycle, black smoke started pouring out of the control panel with a strong burning plastic smell. The panel no longer worked and I couldn’t turn off the dishwasher. I has to flip the circuit breaker to turn it off. Even though I did this within one minute my house was filled with smoke and an acrid smell. Thank goodness I was home, my house could have burned down.. I did some research and found this has been a common problem with these dishwashers and with every report to the CPSC Sears responds requesting the reporter call their customer service line. Well, I did and they want to charge me a $59 service charge to have someone come look at it.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The consumer stated that his wife noticed water on the floor by the dishwasher. They looked underneath the dishwasher and noticed water all over the area. The consumer pulled out the dishwasher and noticed a hole through the bottom of the dishwasher (towards rear left). The hole is about the size of a dime. The consumer stated that there was charring on the floor of the dishwasher.
The consumer contacted Sears and spoke to many different people. He was informed that the unit is not recalled. After many calls, Sears agreed to send out a technician for inspection or repair at no charge.
The technician ([REDACTED]) came out on 11/24/15 from A&E factory Service. The technician believes that the timer must have malfunctioned. He believes that either the timer overheated or shorted out. The consumer was informed that the part can be replaced but the body of the dishwasher is damaged which they would not be able to repair. The consumer was informed that tub or wall of the dishwasher cannot be repaired. The consumer stated that the technician asked for a $30 fee when he was informed that he should not have to pay a fee.
The consumer stated that the water from the dishwasher leaked underneath the wood flooring. Because his house has an open floor plan, the water caused damage to the flooring in the kitchen, foyer, living room, and utility/laundry room. The consumer stated that the flooring will have to be replaced. The consumer made a claim with his insurance company and had a flooring company ([REDACTED]) come out for an estimate. The consumer was provided about $4500 repair estimate.
The consumer already purchased a new unit through Lowe’s for $280. The consumer believes that Sears should offer some sort of reimbursement or refund.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite, dishwasher, stainless steel exterior. Model: 665.1377K601 Serial Number: FT3301771 Stock Number: 13773 Type Number: 577-0
Fire shot out of the top of the dishwasher door. I was standing at the sink washing my hands, there was a little sound, then crackling, fire, then fire flamed out of the top, right area of the dishwasher. I yelled for my husband to turn off the power, and grabbed the fire extinguisher. The fire stopped once the electric was turned off at the main breaker. There was a horrible burnt, electrical smell. I thankfully was at the time standing to the side of the dishwasher, and no one was injured during the incident.

The product, in the report: White Kenmore Elite Dishwasher
On 10/24/2015 my Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Model 665.16582200 Serial Number FM2002942 Type 577-0 caught on fire at the circuit board. There was smoke coming from the control panel on the right hand side. Luckily it happened as I walked into the kitchen and was able to stop the dishwasher immediately by opening the door. Immediately after doing so the control panel caught fire but did not catch anything else on fire because it was now partially open. Had I not opened the dishwasher door a bit, the fire would have been able to reach the Formica countertop. The dishwasher was purchased in 2002. Luckily there was no damage to anything other than the dishwasher except for the awful smell of plastic and electronics burning.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dishwasher
This is regarding a Kenmore Elite dishwasher installed in my kitchen. The top rack of the dishwasher is a “easy slide” rack and the top rack will slide forward when open this door of the dishwasher or while the door is open. The problem is as you try to load the bottom rack of the dishwasher you have to constantly keep pushing the top rack back into the dishwasher. If you are not watching it as you are swinging down to load a dish in the bottom rack not realizing the top rack just slide out, you can hit the rack with the dish and have had the case where I broke a plate. There is no resistance to keep the rack from sliding around on it own.
We had a technician from Sears to come to the house and look at the issue in which he reported there was nothing he could do to fix the issue. The dishwasher was level. Sears decided to send me a new dishwasher and the new one is doing the exact same thing. The technician told me this was the 3rd service call within a week reporting the same issue. To me there is a serious design flaw with how the top rack is mounted and needs to have something that does not allow the rack to slide so easily.
I paid a visit to the Sears store where I purchased the dishwasher. The sales person informed me that he had another customer earlier in the week complaining of the same issue. Also found out this model of the dishwasher had been removed from the floor.
I am now going through a second round with Sears for another technical to come to my house and review the situation.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 665.139 in Stainless Steel
While running, a fire started inside the control panel of our Kenmore Elite 665.139 dishwasher generating noxious toxic fumes. We cut the electrical power at the circuit breaker. I unscrewed and opened the door where the control electronics are housed to ensure there was no more open flame. I traced back the source of the fire to power connection on the control board (Whirlpool Corp. P/N W10195344). There was absolutely no moisture inside the dishwasher door. I concluded that the electrical fire was either caused by a design flaw (insufficient electrical trace clearance, sizing, or isolation from the ground plane) or manufacturing conditions causing a poor solder joint - I could not be certain as that portion of the board was completely obliterated by the fire.

Kenmore Undercounted Dishwasher Model 665.16499300, Serial FR2802834 electronic control panel caught on fire. This unit was purchased in 2004. The fire was severe enough that if we were not present to smell the acidic smoke AND have a fire extinguisher readily available, our cabinets would have went up in flames possibly causing more damage. Our 4 year old triplet boys bedroom is directly above the kitchen.

The product, in the report: Built-In Dishwasher (Plastic Tub)
The consumer stated that the unit was installed in the house when she moved in about 6 years ago. She is not aware if there were any repairs/modifications made to the unit by the previous owner.
The consumer stated that she started the dishwasher cycle. The cycle was almost complete when her husband smelled strong electrical burning odor. The consumer’s husband saw black smoke being emitted from the the control panel of the dishwasher. The consumer stated that there are black soot marks on top of the dishwasher.
The consumer stated that the unit did not turn off from the control panel area. They had to cut the circuit to the unit from the circuit breaker in order to turn it off.
The consumer stated that part of the plastic on the control panel area (outside of the dishwasher door) melted and turned yellow.
The consumer did not notice any flames. She believes that they turned the dishwasher off in time to avoid further issues.
The consumer contacted Kenmore on 9/2/15. They informed her that they can come out and replace the motor under the recall. The consumer believes that the control panel is the issue and is what needs to be replaced. The consumer was informed that a technician will have to examine the unit to determine the issue with the control panel.
A technician from Sears is supposed to come out on the 9/15/15 for an inspection. The cost for motor, labor and service fee will be covered by Kenmore.
The consumer mentioned that she has to keep the circuit break off to keep the unit off. The consumer turned on the circuit and the unit started running again.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher- almond in color.
I own a Kenmore Elite Dish-washer. Model Number 665-17464300, S/N FP3801110 that almost caught fire yesterday. The dishwasher was running while I was out, when I cam inside the house it smelled of smoke and white smoke was pouring out of the control panel of the dishwasher. It would not turn off, even by opening it! I had to pull the circuit breaker.
I am concerned that had I not come home, and smelled smoke I would have lost my home to fire.
I have done some online research and have become aware that this is an ongoing problem (see attached news link).

I started the dishwasher. Within a few minutes, I smelled smoke and the smell of something burning. I noticed that the dishwasher began to emit black and white heavy smoke from the corner of the control panel. I realized the dishwasher panel was on fire, so I opened the door and I turned off the unit. I closed the door, but the unit began to emit smoke and started to burn again. I cannot close the door because it will continue to burn although it is turned off.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
This caller is reporting that his wife started the dishwasher purchased in 2004 on the evening of August 9th, 2015 but then twenty to thirty minutes it began smoking at which time she called for her husband. He came to the kitchen, saw black smoke coming from the right top corner of the unit where he states that the circuit board is location. He tried to open the front door of the dishwasher but although the door was opening the dishwasher kept running at which time he turned the breaker off to cut power to the unit. The caller and his wife opened windows and door to rid their home of the smoke/fire odor then moved the dishwasher to their garage. The caller is reporting this incident as a severe fire hazard due to the overheating being a potential for eventual fire.
There are no injuries being reported.
He contacted the manufacturer a few times today at 1 (800) 479-6351 using option# 6, he did not obtain the name of any of the manufacturer contacts but was provided with case# [REDACTED].
He was offered an after purchase 10% discount on a new dishwasher but due to the hazard with his dishwasher being fire he doesn’t believe this to be a fair offer.

Dishwasher control panel behind front right corner started on fire. Resulted in smoke, and melted components on the control panel which included the on/off sensor so opening the door wouldn’t stop the situation. Breaker needed to be thrown to remove power from the unit. Until that was thrown, sparks and smoke were observed with the door open or closed.

Caller stated that the dishwasher started smoking while it was in use. He stated that approximately 5 mins after the unit was operational, smoke emanated from the sides of the door. Fortunately he was home to unplug the dishwasher.
Caller feels that he experienced similar problems of Recall#05-123. Hazard: An electrical defect within the dishwashers’ wash motor wiring poses a risk of the motor overheating and possibly catching fire.
Caller stated that he noticed that there were numerous complaints on the dishwasher. The manufacturer was contacted and he was informed that this incident occurred because the dishwasher was old. He was also advised that a service technician would be sent out at his expense, the technician came out and he was advised that the control board malfunctioned that caused the fire.
Caller feels that this dishwasher should be recalled.

The product, in the report: brand: Kenmore model #: 665.17751790 color: white
I have a Kenmore dishwasher, model 665.17751790, serial number FH0404849.
Last night (5/16/15) the dishwasher was started as usual before bedtime, by my wife. About an hour later, I walked by it, and I thought, wow, that is still hot (it has a little vent in the front where steam comes out). It didn’t really register as serious at the time, just unusual.
Then this morning we realized the dishwasher was still not through the cycle. It wouldn’t start, and instead made a buzzing sound.
My wife opened it, and it was still hot inside (after all night!). The dishes were still unwashed inside, and several inches of water was in the bottom. So my wife emptied it and washed the things by hand.
However, several items showed signs of having been exposed to extreme heat. The tumblers remain cloudy (like the plastic was partially melted). The rubber gasket for the blender is also partially melted.
I don’t trust the thing at all any more. I turned off the power breaker.
I’m fortunate it didn’t go up in flames overnight - obviously it malfunctioned and seriously overheated.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
This caller and his wife were relaxing in their family room when his wife smelled an odd burning odor which they both agreed that the odor was similar to burning insulation. They went to the kitchen to investigate and saw that that their dishwasher had whitish grey smoke coming from the operation panel in front with most of it coming from the right hand side of the panel. The caller pushed the stop button on the panel but the unit did not respond to any of the buttons. His wife opened door but the dishwasher kept running and spraying water out. They then pulled the power cord from behind the dishwasher which stopped it. They opened the doors & windows then set up fans to rid their home of the smoke. The caller and his wife are reporting this incident realizing that this may be an older model, however they expect it to stop working but not catch fire.
There are no injuries to be reported. The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them. The caller is requesting assistance from the manufacturer for purchase of a newer, safer dishwasher.

This caller is reporting his dishwasher which he states that the upper rack is pulled out on gliders.
He is reporting that the connector that attaches the upper rack to the gliders is faulty, could easily break instantly causing the rack to drop, presenting consumer with a sudden, heavy weight and potentially lead to users to be injured by either the rack hitting their hand or possibly glasses or dishes breaking, also potentially causing cuts.
A connector repair kit has manufactured and was included in a repair to this callers dishwasher at his expense. Caller attests that this safety issue is well known to the manufacturer Adjuster part # W10712394. This part was re-designed by manufacturer replacing plastic with metal parts because of many failures reported.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite built in Dishwasher (white front panel)
I am sending this report regarding a very frightening situation that occurred last week with our Kenmore Elite Dishwasher (Model 665.16482300, Serial FR3406613), purchased in Sept 2004. We had loaded it and started it up and headed out to our son’s band concert. When we got home an hour later, we smelled the most horrid electrical burning smell as we entered our house. We determined it was coming from the dishwasher when we noted black soot on the counter above it. We turned the circuit breaker off to it and my husband removed the front panel. The entire control panel is blackened and the wires are clearly melted and soot covers it all. It horrifies me to think that our house could have burned down and/or my family could have been injured/killed if this had happened when we were sleeping or if we had been away for longer. I see there was a recall of similar DW’s from 2004 (but not our exact model #). I can understand appliances wearing out over time, but I don’t believe they should literally burn up; certainly the public should be safeguarded from this.

On 01/03/15 the consumer set the unit to a normal wash cycle. The normal wash cycle takes about an hour. The consumer states just before the unit was about to complete the cycle he noticed flames coming from the top of the unit, near the control panel. The flames last for a few seconds and the unit shut off on its own. The consumer shut the circuit breaker off. He then opened the unit’s door and noticed an electrical burn odor. The consumer did not notice any burn damages other than around the control panel.
The consumer contacted Sears on 01/21/15 and informed them of the incident. Sears arranged to have a technician examine the unit on 01/23/15 and the consumer would have to pay $69. The consumer was informed that he would not have to pay any additional charges since the unit is defective. However, on 01/23/14 the technician informed the consumer that the repairs would cost $350. The technician examined the unit and informed the consumer that a fuse in the control panel is burned and the control panel would need to be replaced.
The consumer feels the unit poses a fire hazard and he does not believe he should pay for any repairs because it is a manufacturer defect.
The unit is used once a day.
The unit has only been repaired once prior to this incident. Sometime in March 2006 (estimated) the consumer contacted Sears and a technician replaced the unit’s water pump. The unit’s one year warranty was over and the consumer had to pay $365 for the repairs.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Model # 66512776K310
I purchased a Kenmore Elite dishwasher (Model number 66512776K310) in March of 2014. Last week, the top rack failed and nearly came crashing down full of dishes. The failure is due to the small plastic prongs which hold the top rack in place. These prongs have cracked off in several places. I tried to order replacement parts from Sears and was told by two different representatives that they no longer make the part. This seems strange since it is a pretty new machine. They are going to send a repair technician out to look at the dishwasher in 2 weeks time. I asked how the technician would fix the machine, since they no longer make the part. I was told that the technician would be able to fix it. Hmmm. Seemed suspicious to me, so I did some research online and found that many, many consumers have had the same exact problem - many have posted pictures showing exactly the same broken plastic prongs. I believe Sears and/or Whirlpool (the manufacturer) know that they have a defective part, which is why they no longer make this particular part. If you google the part number ( W10350376 ), you will find a lot of dissatisfied customers. Many tell stories of how they were charged for service calls and/or parts that are supposed to be under warranty. There is plenty of evidence that the part is defective (becomes brittle and cracks off because it is not capable of withstanding the high temperatures in the machine) and that they are aware of it (they discontinued making and selling this particular part). It seems obvious to me that Sears/Whirlpool should be forced to recall any dishwasher with this defective part.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller stated that she placed the dishwasher in use and retired to bed, she was awakened by an odor of electrical fire approximately 30-40 mins later. In her investigation, she noticed that smoke was emitting from the vents of the unit. The circuit breaker was used to switch the power off. The next morning when the dishwasher electrical panel was opened her spouse noticed that the electrical components had melted.
There was a service call in March 2013 for a leak which was repaired.
1/5/15 The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that someone from the safety department would contact her. The submitter added she never received a call from them [mfr].
Caller feels that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be reported.
The consumer added she is very disappointed at Sears and Kenmore. Consumer also noted she has called customer service several times, spoke to 2 supervisors at Sears and Kenmore, and no one ever offered to send a technician to investigate what happened...Because the dishwasher is no longer under warranty, all they can do is send a technician to repair it (at a cost of about $400), which she is not going to take chances with the safety of her family with a dishwasher that started burning.
The consumer stated she feels that Kenmore and Sears don’t care what happens to their customers, and she knows the appliance is not brand new, but when you buy a product you expect it to be safe.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, Kenmore, Model 665, Serial 16912001
My dishwasher, Kenmore Elite Model 665, 16912001, caught on fire. Luckily we were home. Dishwasher started to run, my husband noticed white smoke, then black, and by the time he got to the dishwasher it was in flames. He put out the fire. Again, we were lucky to be home and we were lucky that he stopped the fire before it tripped the circuit breakers. We immediately called Sears, who gave us number for Kenmore My husband spoke to a [REDACTED], at Kenmore. We called hime 4 times. [REDACTED] was surprised that a service man did not call us. We called [REDACTED] again last Friday, We did not get a call back.
I must add that we purchased this dishwasher in 2001. We had service on this dishwasher several times which was covered by the warranty. I know that since it is not covered under the warranty, Kenmore does not want to deal with us. We don’t understand why it is necessary to send a service person because they are not going to do anything in the first place.
As per my search on the website, there was a recall on May 29, 1996, on Kenmore dishwashers that have model numbers beginning with 665, and serial numbersas 665.1665591 (Consumer Products letter). Since I purchased the dishwasher after that date, I assume that my model 665 was safe. When the service technician came to repair it, no mention was made that this model was ever recalled.
I am writing this so that other people who have this dishwasher are protected against a fire. I never in my life thought that a dishwasher would catch on fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 24” Dishwasher
Kenmore Elite 24” dishwasher, model number 66512773K310, purchased November 2013. The top rack of the dishwasher is poorly designed and unsafe. The rack slides are under sized and flimsy and do not support the weight the unit is expected to experience in normal use. Worse, the wheels that the top rack rolls on are plastic, held in place only with plastic spring clips. On our unit these clips broke, allowing the top rack to fall out of the washer. If the top rack were full of drinking glasses when this occurred it could cause a serious injury to anyone nearby from falling and broken glass. It could seriously injure a child nearby.
This is a commonly experienced product failure. Numerous consumers have reported EXACTLY this issue with this model, and if their reports are to be believed, the company is well aware of the issue as it is readily acknowledged and recognized by repair staff.
See http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/sears_dishwashers.html
This is a defective and dangerous product that should be recalled and redesigned to be safe for its intended use.

Caller stated that the dishwasher was placed into wash cycle approximately 5 mins later she noticed that there was black smoke emitting from the door, she opened the door but it kept running, her spouse had to switch it off from the circuit breaker. There were no visual damages but there was an overwhelming burnt odor which emanated inside the room. When the Sears repairman opened up the door of the dishwasher, the circuit panel was melted. The repairman said the electronics overheated and the damage was the worse he has seen.
11/30 The retailer and manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that there was no recall for her unit and the issues she was having. She filed a report with the customer care center. The repairman said the caller would have to pay for the repairs since it is not under warranty or recall.
Caller feels that dishwasher poses a fire hazard and she could have had a house fire if no one was home.

Kenmore Dishwasher 665-16032402 was running through a cleaning cycle, and members of the family were commenting that they detected a strange smell. It seemed like the smell was coming from the dishwasher, but was hard to know for sure. We paused the cycle to check inside the dishwasher but didn’t notice anything that was wrong. After resuming the cycle, we continued to notice the smell. I’m not certain how long the dishwasher was running, but seemed longer than normal. Shortly after, I heard a pop sound and saw black smoke coming from the top right of the dishwasher door. I ran to the dishwasher to open the door and smoke continued to come out of the door. I told my son to watch the dishwasher while I ran downstairs to turn off the circuit breaker. After I turned off the breaker, I heard my son yelling fire from upstairs. I ran back upstairs, grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the flames that were burning through the inside of the dishwasher door. Once everything was settled down, I removed the control panel from the unit and noticed a high amount of damage around the wires to the control panel and plastic of the dishwasher door. After inspecting the control board itself, I also noticed what looks like a hot spot on the circuit board. I have pictures to document the incident.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model 665.12773K310
Kenmore Elite Dishwasher 12773 utilizes plastic parts in the top rack slide mechanism. These parts fail in roughly one year, permitting the axles to separate from the wheels. The loaded top rack can fall onto the door or lower rack, causing glassware to break and presenting a hazard.
Sears/Kenmore has refused to remedy the issue without cost, and one warranty representative suggested that I call Frigidaire if I am not happy with the resolution.
Replacement parts are available on Amazon labeled as [REDACTED]. When I found them, they were listed #2 in dishwasher repair parts. Anecdotally a high-failure item. Presumably the parts can be found in dishwashers by Frigidaire, [REDACTED], and Kenmore.
Others on the internet dealing with the same issue indicate that the replacement parts have not been redesigned, and as such, will likely fail near the one-year mark as the originals.

Purchase a Kenmore dishwasher model 665.13032K113 about a year and a half ago. The heating element broke a piece off and burned a hole through the plastic dishwasher causing our floor to flood. The metal was so hot from the broken piece it actually made a hole through the plastic. A little longer and the hot piece of metal would have melted through completely though causing a risk of a fire below on floor or plastic parts below the dishwasher. Warranty did not cover but I think this is a safety issue more than anything and product should be recalled. Also we be contacting consumer rights groups and my personal attorney for immidiate refund as I believe it is not fair to have this for over a year and the amount to fix cost is greater than the purchase amount.

The pins which hold the wheels onto the top rack of my dishwasher break every 9-12 months. I discover this when the top rack unexpectedly falls when the rack is pulled out to load or unload dishes. Fortunately I have caught the rack before it crashed into the bottom rack where it could break glasses and ceramic dishes. I’m glad it has not occurred when my elderly mother pulled the rack out, as the rack and dishes were rather heavy when falling unexpectedly, and could easily have pulled her off balance and caused a fall. I have owned the dishwasher for 2 years and am on the 3rd adjuster replacement. I note many others complaining of the same thing on line. Mine is a Kenmore dishwasher (Model 665.13292K112), but it appears[REDACTED]is the manufacturer. Kenmore has reimbursed me for the first two adjusters, but it appears they continue to use this same dangerous rack wheel/adjuster design in the models presently on display. This part should be made sturdier before an injury occurs.

The product, in the report: kenmore dishwasher
I have a Kenmore Dishwasher Model # 665.17034400. Yesterday, 8/6/2014, it caught fire. Apparently, there was some sort of overload in the controller. My wife smelled something burning before seeing any smoke. When she could not identify the source, she and my daughter got out of our house and called the fire department. By the time they arrived, smoke was coming out of the upper right portion of the dishwasher door, leaving a sooty residue. (I have pictures if it would help.) No one hurt, no serious damage, save the dishwasher itself.
The dishwasher came with the house, which we purchased in 2006. I could not determine a manufacture date. It gets heavy use, and I had replaced the main motor myself about 2 years ago.
I am concerned that the controller could overheat so badly without tripping the circuit breaker or some other safety mechanism. I wanted to report the incident in case there have been other problems.
I am also reporting the incident to Kenmore.
Thank you, [REDACTED]

Later that night my husband removed the face of the control panel to find the wiring burnt and melted.

The product, in the report: Kenmore elite dishwasher purchased in 2005 model number 665.16264401
I have a Kenmore Dishwasher Model number 665.16264401. I started the dishwasher and about 35 minutes into the cycle I smelt something burning. I went into kitchen and white smoke was coming from the control panel of the dishwasher. I opened the door which normally stops it and it kept washing and spraying water. I closed the door and black smoke started to come out, I then ran to the breaker to turn it off. I turned the breaker back on and it started up again. I had to unhook the electricity to the dishwasher. The front panel was very hot and front was starting to melt. Glad I was home or the house would of been on fire.

Dishwasher motor caught fire today during the cycle. The timer indicated “42” remaining in the cycle. I just happened to be right there in the kitchen and smelled smoke and then saw it. I pulled the handle of the dishwasher to stop the cycle and the smoke subsided. Dishwasher seemed to have been working correctly and water was still in the bottom. I tried closing it again to cancel the cycle but then flames shot out under the control panel on the door so I opened it again to stop the cycle.

I have had my dishwasher for a number of years. Recently the control panel would only work intermittently. It stopped working all together after filling the dishwasher with water the last time. I took the door apart to inspect the control panel and the wires. I found that the wires had melted into the sound deadening material on the door due to extreme heat. I researched this issue online and found that this model dishwasher was the subject of a recall due to fires caused by the overheating. Unfortunately the recall apparently only covers plastic front models where mine has a stainless steel front.

When I went into kitchen, there were sparks and grey smoke billowing out of the top and side of the washer. I pulled the door open thinking this would turn off the dishwasher, but instead the washer continued to run shooting water out into the kitchen. I then went and turned off the circuit breaker. When I tried to shut the door to the washer, the smoke continued to fill the room (with the breaker still off). the door remained open for over a week before it was able to be closed.

The Whirlpool control module that is in the door of the appliance in the cavity between the exterior cover panel and the door frame overheated and caught fire. If I had not been right there when I smelt and saw the smoke and flame to extinguish it a few seconds after it ignited it would have spread to the cover plastic panel, the wooden cabinets and then the rest of the kitchen and become a major house fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model # 665.16482300
I purchased a Kenmore Elite dishwasher model #665.16482300 in Sept 2004. Last night I smelled something burning and the dishwasher turned off mid-cycle. The repair man today said that the electronic control board caught on fire damaging everything around it. Fortunately it was self-contained within the housing and did not catch the kitchen on fire. I believe this is a safety issue and fortunately I was still awake when this occurred as many people have a delay cycle that they use on their machine.
