The product, in the report: Kenmore self-clean 30” slide-in gas range, w/convection.
The oven door handle of our Kenmore 790 series slide-in gas range had become loose. In the process of looking it over to see what would need to be done, we heard a “ping” followed by a swoosh as the oven door (exterior glass) shattered out and on to the floor in thousands and thousands of tiny glass pieces.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range 790.71403
At 5 AM, I heard a loud smash. I went downstairs and found the outer oven door on my Kenmore gas range had exploded outward. The oven was not being used at that time and had not been on for over 10 hours. No one was hurt. I am filing this report because I see that others have experienced this same problem and that, so far, Sears is not doing anything about it.

The consumer is concerned that this range is a safety hazard and should be investigated before someone is seriously injured.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range model 790.71383709
I had the back two stove top burners on my Kenmore gas range (model 790.71383709) operating on low for most of two separate days while simmering chili. An hour or so after turning the burners off my carbon monoxide detector went off and showed a reading of 58 PPM.
The fire department arrived and checked my furnace, hot water heater, and gas dryer finding no evidence of carbon monoxide. The gas range was the only gas appliance that had been running that day, so they felt that was the source. The concentration of CO2 was immediately in the vicinity of the range.
At the suggestion of the fire department, all of the windows and doors in the house were opened for several hours to air the house out.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The caller stated that she has been experiencing problems with the gas range since installation. Whenever the unit is turned on it ignites an excessive high flames from the front right burner. This flame had caused minor burns to her spouse knuckles around 6/2011. No medical attention was received.
The repair service department and manufacturer were contacted on several occasions and they have been out for examination. She was informed that there is no adjustment to the flames and that they could not assist her.
The caller feels that this range is unsafe because of the fire hazard that it poses and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range Model # 790.78673400; Serial # VF44446826, stainless steel with glass door.
The specific product referred to in this report is a Kenmore Gas Range Model # 790.78673400; Serial # VF44446826. My wife was at home with our 11 month old, feeding her lunch in the kitchen when without warning, the glass on the outside of the oven door exploded outward, sending shards of glass flying multiple feet across the kitchen. The range was off and had not been in use for many hours. The biggest danger of this incident was the flying glass, which could have seriously injured my daughter had she been within a few more feet of the oven. In doing some research online, we have found that this is not an isolated incident, but rather somewhat of a common event in Kenmore Gas Ranges starting with model # 790. I certainly hope that this would warrant further investigation.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The consumer says whenever the stove is turned on the knobs get too hot to handle, the knobs get extremely hot to the touch. The retailer has sent out a technician four times who assess the same thing every time. The manufacturer has determined that it is not hot enough to warrant any service or repair.
The consumer says this is a definite safety concern; they have been in contact with the manufacturer since January of 2011 for the same issue and they refuse to offer any assistance. The consumer says that a service flash is issued by the retailer known as FF22-574 that states “no temperature limitations apply to the range top”.
The consumer says that a prior report listed the temperature at 345 degrees on the top per the service technician who came out on April 25th 2012.

Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 10, 2012, sent to the company Aug 23, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 7, 2012
The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dual Oven Gas Range with Convection
This is in regards to a Kenmore Elite Dual Oven Gas Range in which has safety issues/concerns. The primary concern is flames flowing out of the bottom oven when the door is opened as well as strong gas odor. The gas odor has occurred recently after purchase and would activate the carbon monoxide detector as well as causing people lightheadedness, headaches and nausea. In regards to the flames; when the bottom door is opened while the stove is on flames will come out and reach as high as the stovetop. We have had at least 5 service calls in which no resolution has occurred to fix the issue. Prior to the service tech leaving on the last service call he instructed us not to use the stove until he returns due to safety issues. Also during the service call the tech did not want the flames reproduced due to risk of injury to himself. The stove is a safety concern due to the flames as well as I have personally been burnt myself while cooking.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite natural gas stove
We purchased a Sears Kenmore gas range stove in 2005. We noticed one of the burners called a “power burner” never ignited on first try. It takes numerous attempts for it to start. A service repair man from sears looked at it stated “that’s just the way it is made”. So basically it’s a defective product and to me it’s a severe safety oversight. If other consumers have this same stove someone is eventually going to have a problem leaving the gas on and we all know what can happen next. Please look into this. Thank you. Regards, [REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Jul 5, 2012, sent to the company Sep 10, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 24, 2012
The product, in the report: Gas Range
On July 3rd 2012, I was making a cup of tea on stove top, when suddenly a million pieces of shattered glass pieces fell on the floor and my foot. I was shocked and did not know what happened. Later it dawned on me that the gas oven door had just exploded and shattered into pieces. Mind you the oven was not even turned on. After I stopped the bleeding on my foot; I went about cleaning up all the debris that had spread all over the kitchen. I was so shaken up and horrified that the door glass would fall off just like that when I was not even opening the oven door or even using the oven. What if the oven was on; would it have resulted in a catastrophe with temp at 400F? I immediately called up Sears and told them about the incident. They said the warranty was up as I had purchased the range in Sept 2008. I explained to them I can understand if the oven stopped working or something else had happened, they could invoke the warranty clause. In this case it seemed like an inherent defect and a safety issue in the model. She tried connecting to a supervisor but once I got transferred the automated response said office was closed. I did take some pictures that I am attaching. As I knew July 4th was a national holiday, I refrained from calling Sears the next day still picking up glass pieces all around the kitchen. On July 5th I again called Sears and the representative heard my incident and transferred me to some one else. I again repeated the story and explained there was an inherent defect in the glass. I told them I googled on internet if this had ever happened to anyone and voila there were at least 10 similar cases where the glass shattered when oven was not on. They told me I need to pay up if I want to get this fixed/or I should call frigidiare the manufacturer. I was shocked with disbelief. [REDACTED]I called again Sears but now the calls are getting me no where. There is no concern at the other end to understand the safety hazard the appliance poses. All I am looking for them to acknowledge the product is defective and there should be recall of the glass door and them to replace my door at no cost to me. Hence, I am filing a complaint. I cannot believe that a company of reputation like Sears would handle my situation in such a nonchalant manner.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas range 5 burner Product No: 79070602013
I have purchased Kenmore Gas five burner cooking range little over a year ago (06/18/11) from Sears. The Product Number is 79070602013. Last night (06/27/12) I smell natural gas leak at my house. I called [REDACTED] to check any gas leakages. They found out that the gas is leaking from the cooking range regulator. They shut the gas off and asked me to call the Kenmore personal for repair.
This is a serious safety issue with the product. Luckily I called the [REDACTED] on time otherwise my wife and kids have to suffer from the gas odor.

She was told by the technician to unplug the unit when she steps out of the house which prompted her to contact us.

The consumer was in another room. she heard a loud noise. She walked into the kitchen when she noticed that the front glass to the oven door had shattered. She says the oven was not on at the time and no one was in the kitchen.
The last time it was used was the day before. She contacted the manufacturer today who didn’t take any information from her and referred her to CPSC. The consumer is concerned that someone can get potentially hurt from an incident like this.

The product, in the report: Double oven 5 burner gas range
I purchased a Kenmore double oven gas range, model 665.7800.3802 April 2009. Approximately June 2010 I came in and found the top oven had turned itself on and heated to 350 degrees. I have no idea how long it had been on. From that time forward it has continued to to so with more and more frequency. Now it is nearly constant. I contacted Sears on line support and they advised me to go directly to the store and speak with the appliance manager. The appliance crew stated “he won’t answer”. The manager on duty arranged a service call to be performed. The service tech advised us that the part needed would be 500.00 and Sears would not cover the cost. His advise, and what we’ve had to do to be safe, is to put the plug on a power strip so we can disconnect the power when not in use. This is FAR more than a convenience issue. This is an extreme hazard. It has become even more urgent in our case as my Mother has come to live with us and is very anxious with and confused by this appliance. All indications from on-line research is that Sears will continue to ignore this hazard unless forced to deal with it.

The product, in the report: gas stove and oven model 790.78782402 serial VF51017885
On April 28th, I put my Kenmore gas stove/oven into clean mode. I placed the fan above the stove on high and went to the other room. I returned approximately 35-40 minutes later and noticed a burning odor. I went to touch the control panel and before I could I noticed the area was incredibly hot. I grabbed a damp cloth and tried to turn it off, but the panel even with the cloth was too hot. Through the plastic piece one could see the metal fingers of the control board discoloring the plastic. Since no manual controls were available and the control panel was too hot, went to the basement and turned the kitchen breaker off. Upon cooling, i turned it back on and the panel was beeping with an F11 code. The control panel and oven are unusable. Given the seriousness of the panel damage, I deem this to be a serious safety hazard and it should be investigated.
I contacted Sears today and after numerous (unhelpful operators) I was informed it was manufactured by Frigidaire. Given the lack of helpfulness to even listen to my safety concern, I find no alternative, but to let the CPSC do it.
Note: this appliance was with the house when we moved in, but after much research I was able to determine its origin from the 2008-9 timeframe.

Kenmore Gas Range model # 79078632601 serial # VF420889 purchased Dec 24 2007 Gas leak noted on April 5 2012. This condition rapidly (overnight) built up a heavy smelly gas odor in the kitchen, that was spotted. Luckily no explosion and it was shut down safely but it could have been a major explosion. Gas company came and red tagged the appliance, after verifying there was no gas leak in the gas line elsewhere. Sears service technician came and tested the appliance and claimed no problem on April 9. Gas company called back to reconnect, and they tested the appliance at my request on April 10, and pinpointed the existence of a noticeable gas leak and pointed to the broiler oven gas valve bypassing gas and leaking in the order of 0.3 cf. Sears technician called back and tested nothing this time, they took the gas company at it word, and provided an estimate for replacing the gas valve, estimate of $464.92 (!!!), so we will purchase a replacement of this range, from Sears. I am concerned, given incompetence of Sears service and the possible liability of the company, that this condition will not be flagged and reported to Consumer Safety Agency, and that evidence may disappear when they take the faulty appliance away. This is a major hazard that could have cause injury and property damage if not (by luck). Range is just over 4 year old and use of it has been very light...looks almost brand new.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Stainless Steel Slide in gas range
The consumer wanted to express his concerns about his gas range, as he feels that it is a potential hazard for “injury or death”. The consumer has owned the product for two years and would estimate that the problem presented itself almost immediately. The range has 4 burners on the surface top and the consumer noticed that when any of the burners are being used at low; the flame from the burner will go out if the oven door is opened.
The consumer suspects that opening the oven door while any of the burners are set to low, will cause a draft that causes the flame to burn out. The consumer feels that this is unsafe as the consumer will inhale gas fumes from the burners. The consumer stated that this caused his wife to experience headaches. (date unknown). The consumer and his wife have not been hospitalized for symptoms.
The consumer stated that the product appears to not be damaged. The consumer hasn’t experienced any property damage. The consumer has not called his local fire department or his home insurance company. The consumer contacted the retailer last month and their response was to have the consumer had a technician from the retailer inspect the unit two weeks ago.
The service was covered by the retailer and the technician had no resolution for his issue with the range. The consumer was informed that his product was not on recall. The consumer called the firm 3 weeks ago and was informed that his product was not on recall. The firm did not file a report for him.

Outside glass of my Kenmore oven door shattered. I was at work when it happened, luckily nobody was home or the kids or myself would have been hurt had we been in the kitchen. It was fine when I left in the morning. It looked to have just exploded, glass was everywhere. Most of it piled underneath the oven on the floor but there were shards of glass all across the kitchen, some I found approx. 7 feet away under my kitchen table. I had not used my oven for over a week and was turned off at time. The oven came with the house when I bought it 2 years ago and I can’t find any paperwork on it. I am assuming it is no longer under warranty. I also can’t find the model #.

I set my Kenmore Gas oven to the self clean mode 3 days ago. about 30 minutes into the clean the inner glass panel made a very loud “boom” and exploded.
The outer glass panel did not fail but glass did drop all over the floor after the oven cooled.
I contacted Kenmore and they acted like they had never heard of the problem and told me to pull my oven out and unplug it. To pull it out and unplug it I would have to crouch down in front of a hot, exploding oven and pull. That was awful advice that needs to be stopped. As far as them not knowing about such a problem. That is a lie. They are hundreds of blogs and videos and news clips proving that this is not the first time a Kenmore glass panel has failed.
It is unacceptable for any household appliance to explode on its user.
Please look into this before a small child is hurt.

Caller is owner of Bldg in Manhattan, he purchased Kenmore Gas Ranges for the apartments in September 2008. DOM is unknown at this time.
Monday, March 5th, 2012 one tenant placed item in oven set at 425 degrees for twenty minutes during which time she left the kitchen.
While tenant was in her living room she heard an explosion, went into her kitchen and saw that the outside glass of oven door had exploded.
Glass was at the farthest about three feet from range and the nearest was at the glass door frame on the oven.
Caller has four of these same ranges in his building with all of them being purchased in September, 2008.
Manufacturer was contacted on March 6th, 2012. Tech is being sent to building for inspection of this range.
He is worried that this same occurrence could repeat itself with the other tenants and with small children in these apartments he is afraid that although this particular incident produced no injuries that this may not be the case with any of the other ranges.
Caller has asked that I list the following url and that Compliance review how many of this same manufacturers ranges have had this same issue. www.selectsmart.com/discuss/read.php?34,601635
Caller would ask that the manufacturer inspect the four ranges in his building stating that he is an engineer and he believes the seal between the two pieces of glass in the oven door has failed and that the space between the two pieces of glass is being pressurized causing the glass to blow out.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range.
Fire in a gas range oven on initial use after installation. Gas was immediately turned off but fire continued. Damage was minimal and any injury is not known at this time. However, the source of fire gave off vapors which may have been toxic. Cause of fire was a sample packet of stainless cleaner placed in oven compartment by the manufacturer and somehow, perhaps during shipping, worked its way through vents in oven floor and underneath a burner. When the oven was turned on, close proximity of the packet to a burner ignited allowing contents to give off noxious fumes. Oven had to be partially dismantled to determine cause of fire.

After about three years of owning a Kenmore Gas Range Model 790, the right side of the main door handle popped off as I was opening the oven. The door slammed shut and, because the left side of the handle hadn’t fallen off, it torqued the left side handle as I still had the right side in my hand while the door was slamming shut. I found that simply screwing the bolt back in was relatively easy, and didn’t think about it for a while. Then it happened again, and again, and again. The frequency became too high (3 times in one day) in November, and I’m just now getting to writing a report after seeing online many people experience the same problem. The only way our handle holds now is if the spacers are removed between the interior and exterior panels of the door.
I just got off the phone with Sears, and the only person available on the phone is a dispatcher, not a tech, and he told me that there was nothing that they could do to help without having a tech come out, which we would be charged for.

The product, in the report: black Kenmore 30-inch free-standing natural gas range and oven, model 790.71349703 and serial number VF90924470
Our very first attempt to use the range and oven resulted in a tremendous flood of natural gas into the apartment. The entire main floor fills with natural gas when we attempted to bake. And scones which ordinarily take 12 minutes to bake, took 43 minutes in this oven.
We asked the apartment complex to investigate and the worker admitted, after considerable discussion, that the oven was not heating correctly and made an adjustment to the temperature control. The worker told us we didn’t understand how gas ranges/ovens operate and that we needed to allow it to “cycle five times while preheating.” I opened the kitchen drawer to pull out the operator’s manuel, which the worker took from me and tucked in his pocket, saying we were not allowed to have the manuel.
However, after one month later, I was constantly experiencing headaches whenever we baked. I was coughing whenever on the main and lower floors. My teen was experiencing constant coughing which sounded more like croup, and asthma attacks at night, although she had never experienced asthma or croup ever before.
I sleep on the main floor and have been waking with swollen eyes and a puffy face, not feeling well. Finally, when trying to cook cookies, my teen and my older daughter demanded we call NW Natural Gas because the smell of gas in the room was overwhelming. I looked up the Kenmore 30-inch free-standing range and over on this website. I found the report about a similar kenmore range with similar parts and similar problems, recall # 10-048. So I called the gas company who sent a technician. He confirmed the oven was not operating properly and that the amount of gas coming out of the appliance was outrageous. He shut it off and wrote a ticket declaring it be repaired or replaced.

My Kenmore 3690 Range Door Shattered leaving glass all over my kitchen floor last night. Model # 79036909900 As far as I can tell the part that shattered is part number 318304124. I have spoken with several people at Sears none of whom have anything to offer except to send a repair person or to sell an extended warrenty. I paid over $1300 for this range (on sale!) in April of2010. Also several months ago a prong on one of the range top grates broke off for no reason (which was going to cost several hundred dollars to repair) so now I just avoid using that burner. Both of these issues are serious safety risks. I am going to call the recall department on Monday (800-659-7026) but I suspect based on other reviews there is no recall. This should be reported until it is addressed. Imagine if a small child had been standing in front of the oven door when this occured!!! Based on info found on the web it appear this is not uncommon. The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range (Slide-in)
We have a Kenmore Gas Range Slide-In Oven. It was purchased from Sears 2 1/2 years ago. The oven has always made a large boom sound when it is warming up. Yesterday while it was warming up and things were cooking on the stovetop my mother smelled gas. She opened the oven door to see what the problem was and there was a loud boom. She was burned on her face and neck and her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes were burned off as well. It appears that the oven never ignited and that when she opened the door the gas that was building up came out and racted with the fire on the stovetop. It is a very scary and upsetting incident that we hope doesn’t happen to anyone else/

The product, in the report: Kenmore Plus 4 burner white gas stove model # 66575775890, and serial # RJ4935245
I have a Kenmore gas stove (white, 4 burner Plus). It was purchased in 2000. I was gently cleaning a spill off of the inside of the glass front with a damp paper towel, when it suddenly shattered into hundreds (thousand?) small pieces of glass. The appliance was at room temperature at the time as I had not used the oven in approximately 36 hours. I was holding the door at the time and it did not come in contact with any other item, just my hand supporting it and a damp paper towel wiping the glass.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range
On December 24, 2010, while working in my kitchen, wiping down the counter and cabinetry, I bumped the back of my hand on the corner of the stainless sell oven completely severing or lacerating the extensor tendon of my index finger. I was immediately taken to a nearby hospital urgent care where the attending physician gave me a tetanus shot, splinted my hand and instructed me to return in one week for removal of the stitches. On 12/31/10, I returned to have the stitches removed and because I had loss strength in my index finger, I was referred to a hand surgeon and on in early January had surgery to repair the damage to the extensor tendon. The metal flashing around the opening of the oven and warming unit are not soldered and in an unfinished state with the corners simply bent. My husband and I purchased this stove on November 16, 2010. This unsafe condition is unapparent to a reasonable customer as he or she considers the stove for purchase as the main focus is the look, features, function and price. This incident was reported to Sears on January 8, 2011 by mail to the local store and by online report through its website. On January 17, 2011, I was called by the local Loss Prevention Manager who at the time was informed of my injury and surgery, promising to immediately remove the model from the floor and report the injury to the manufacturer, Electrolux. After surgery, my hand was completed immobilized to allow the tendon reconnection to heal. I wore a custom hand brace for weeks. I was finally released from the surgeon’s care in March 2011. After hearing from no one in weeks, I contacted Sears again in March via its website and was again called by the Loss Prevention Manager and Store Manager. I was told that a claims adjuster from Sedgwick would contact me about my injury. The adjuster Sedgwick took my report and several weeks later on April 14,2011, I was informed she would have to refer me to Electrolux and they would contact me. There was no contact from Electrolux and I reported the incident through their online site in May. I also had the Sedgwick adjuster to reach out to them again and in June 2011, I received copy of a letter from a claims adjuster form Electrolux Crawford & Co to investigate my claim for “personal injury”. I was finally visited by an adjuster from Crawford & Co in June at my home to investigate my claim, take photos of the stove, record my statement. After slow progress, I contacted her in August and was informed my claim was referred to a new adjuster. After weeks of working with the new adjuster bringing him up to speed, I was informed that Electrolux had not yet accepted responsibility for my injury. In the mean time, I am still making payments for medical bills and catching up personally and professionally from lack of use of my hand for several months. I have been unable to replace the stove which is a safety hazard to everyone in my home.

I have twice brushed my hand accidentally against the top right corner of the oven door of my gas range, and suffered a serious cut on the end of my finger. The first time was the most serious as the sharp corner sliced off a chunk of flesh. Even though I am now aware of the hazard, it is difficult to always keep in mind as I move around quickly in the kitchen, as is obvious since I’ve done it twice now. I plan to use duct tape, but I don’t think that is much of a fix.

On October 9th, 2011, caller had been baking pizza in oven at 425 degrees using her gas oven purchased September/October 2008 then after approximately 20 minutes the glass in the outer glass of the oven door exploded sending glass all over the kitchen floor.going as far as the distance of 5 feet in every direction.
Caller and her two children were in the kitchen waiting for the pizza but none of them were harmed.
She contacted manufacturer possibly 3 days later (around 10/12/2011), was informed by them that the range was out of warranty, not on recall and advised caller to contact CPSC.
She states that the range is only 3 yrs old, cost $2,000 and this should not be an occurrence or a worry.
She would like for the public to be made aware of the danger and would like to have the oven door replaced at manufacturer expense. She said that there is no problems with the performance of the range but that she is afraid at this time to use it for fear of the glass remaining exploding.
UPDATE (11/17/11): After the accident, consumer wanted to find out if the oven is still working. When they tried to use the oven, they smelled what seemed to be a burning electric cable. They turned off the oven immediately and the smell was gone.

The product, in the report: Freestanding Gas Range
Kenmore Gas Range; Model 790.70502013 (purchased on 09/11/2011)
Oven continued heating for several hours after being turned off by keypad. Numerous attempts to “reset” the electronics (remove 110VAC cable from outlet for five minutes; per instructions in manual) have failed to make it stop doing this. Oven burner continues to burn at “full strength” until gas supply is removed (there is a shut-off valve on the regulator; found on the back of the range). No “error code” is shown on the LED display.
Steps taken to remedy the condition: Turn off gas supply at regulator. Unplug power cable from outlet for five minutes (last time; left it unplugged for an hour) Turn on gas supply at regulator. Plug power cable in to outlet.
Result: Leaking gas can be smelled and heard; seems to be coming from the oven burner. When oven is turned on, “excess” gas caused a small explosion within broiler compartment. After oven reached set temperature, attempted to turn oven off with keypad. Failure. Turned gas supply off at the regulator.
Obviously, this situation presents a number of dangers to life, limb, and property; from minor burns to carbon monoxide poisoning to a home-destroying explosion. How is it that a “brand new” appliance fails like this unless it was made with faulty parts?

The product, in the report: Black Kenmore gas oven/ range model 790.
Yesterday evening (9/8/2011) I was using my Kenmore oven which is less than 1 1/2 years old (but was installed by previous homeowners when we purchased our home 1 year ago) to heat up chicken nuggets for my kids. I set the oven to 425 and cooked them for 15 minutes. After that I shut the oven off and removed them and then closed the door. I turned around to walk back across the kitchen and feed my kids and as I got over to them there was a loud pop that sounded like a gunshot that came from the oven. I went back over to the oven to open it and make sure there was nothing inside that could have exploded and when I did I saw that the center piece of glass in the oven door had completely shattered. Fortunately no glass burst into the kitchen or into the oven, but I am afraid that if the center glass on a fairly new range could just shatter for no apparent reason, then the other glass on the door that they used in manufacturing could shatter as well. In the meantime I can’t cook in my oven and glass fragments and dust are coming out of the bottom of the door and falling into the warming drawer. It is terrifying to think of what would have happened if the other panes shattered as well. My children were all about 5 feet from the oven door.

She contacted the repair service and a technician was sent out to replaced the part but she noticed that the part was plastic, she visited the store and discovered that the caps were not steel as she thought.
Consumer stated that she is concerned that since this part is made from plastic it poses a potential risk of melting again and causing a fire.
Consumer feels that this is unsafe and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range model series 790.7138 oven door glass
I bought a Kenmore Gas range model 790 series in 2008. I called a friend over to see what I could do about cleaning the outside door glass after I had spilled milk that worked it’s way inside the door between the outside & inside glass. He showed me how to remove the two screws on the top which seperated the two door halves giving me access to clean the glass. Almost immediately when my hand touched the glass with a wet paper towel and liquid dish detergent the glass exploded shattering into a million pieces covering 3 rooms!!! I also got cut on my hand requiring it to be bandaged to stop the bleeding (I’m extremely fortunate it wasn’t my eyes). I retrospect I wish I would have taken pictures because the only resolution Sears provided to me was to charge me $28 for a new glass replacement which my friend is very reluctant now to replace after our experience. I refuse to pay their outrageous service fees for what is obviousl a terrible safety hazzard that should have been recalled years ago. I got the same answer from their customer service that most people on this blog got, “GEE I NEVER HEARD OF THAT HAPPENING BEFORE BUT WE’RE SORRY”. I can’t understand how so many people can experience the same dangerous situation as evidenced by an online blog that documents such occurences dating back to 2007, yet Sears claim it’s a fluke and our govt officials and the attorney general haven’t done anything as of yet. I hate to say this but I know that Sears will only act when something really catastrophic happens, like a child getting severly injured or worse.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range, Model 36709
In March 2008 my wife and I purchased a Kenmore gas range (Model #36709) from Sears. It was not an inexpensive purchase. Everything worked well until July 2011. Perhaps it was coincidental, perhaps not -- but in June 2011, my wife placed the range on self-cleaning mode. She had not used this feature before. Since then, the oven has failed to hold the adjustable racks within it. Imagine, if you will, the front of the range is south, the back is north. It appears as if the east and west sides of the oven have bowed out 1/8” - 1/4” inch so that the racks will not hold in their tracks and fall to the bottom. I contacted Sears to determine if this range was a recall item and to ask how I could fix it. Sears customer service representatives said that the range was not on a recall list and, because the appliance was out of warranty, there was nothing that organization could do. I went on-line and contacted “Manage My Life”, a website dedicated to assisting with problems associated with various products. I received some general guidance and, to make a long story short, contacted an appliance repair technician. He arrived, looked at the oven and told me it was beyond repair. While I am a reasonable person, the failure of this $1600 product after 3+ years is unacceptable. And Sears’ apparent indifference is also unacceptable. Yes, I’m aware of “caveat emptor” and have realized I bought a lemon. But I pass this on to alert you to this potentially unsafe product.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
I was baking chicken in the oven. When I opened the oven door and turned to get oven mitts to remove the chicken, my left leg brushed against the edge of the door. The door sliced through the outside of my left leg like a razor. The cut is quite deep and bled for a long time. Considered a trip to the emergency room but was able to stop the bleeding. The wound, however, is quite deep. I was unaware that the edge of my oven door was so sharp. I reached down to feel it with my fingers and was shocked to see how sharp and ragged the metal edge is. It is truly a safety hazard. If one of my grandchildren were to fall on the oven door when it is open, it could cause quite a severe injury.
It is a Kenmore Elite gas range. There is a warning sticker on the inside of the oven door which warns to be cautious of ‘tipping’ but there is nothing warning of the sharp edges. They are ragged and extremely dangerous. This was considered one of the “top of the line” ranges.

The consumer was not harmed or injured during the incident. The consumer did not call the fire department about his difficulties with his gas range. The consumer noticed the problem with the right front burner shortly after he bought the product and the issue with the oven perhaps 4 months after purchase.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite slide in Range.Model 79031032802 serial number NF94120539. White.
I have a sears kenmore Elite slide in gas oven, purchased in 2009. I preheated the oven to 350 and put a cookie sheet inside. Within minutes the entire glass front door popped and shattered. There was enough of an explosion to throw pieces of glass 6 feet away! Some were thrown hard enough to bounce off the cabinets and fly into the next room. This is a dangerous product. I checked reviews online and found this is a common problem with sears! Why is this not a recalled product?
