I used the 3 hour self cleaning feature on our oven range; it began smoking, thick, acrid, black smoke and smelled horribly. It burned my eyes and caused us to cough. We quickly developed headaches. I tried to cancel the cleaning but the oven would not shut off. I opened all my doors and windows and tried several times to cancel the cleaning but it would not cancel. After the cleaning finished, the oven door was melted and all the knobs on the front of the range were melted.

This report pertains to a problem that is identical to that which was previously reported as CSPC Report No. [REDACTED]. However, this report pertains to a 30-inch Kenmore Gas Range, Model No. 790.74333313; Serial No. VF71010105. Whenever my wife or I use the oven or broiler for the intended purpose, all five of the control knobs for the surface burners become unbearably and dangerously hot to the touch; so much so that thermal burn injury to the skin will occur if contact is maintained for more than 2 or 3 seconds. Although we bought this range in July 2017, the first occurrence of this problem did not take place until November 2022.

Within a few days of receiving the stove, the consumer noticed problems with it. When she turned on the range burner knobs, the flames would not light consistently. The oven also would not heat properly and it caused food not to cook properly.
Overall, there were instances where the oven and the range burners would not come on, when the control knobs were turned on. Sometimes, she turned the controls off and the range burners, as well as the oven, remained on. Furthermore, within the first month that the stove was purchased, the consumer had an extremely high gas bill.
Additionally, within a few weeks of the stove being delivered to her home, the gas company, identified that excessive levels of gas were emitting from the stove. They turned off the gas to her home.
Eventually the gas company turned the gas back on. However, the consumer had to get the state government and the city council involved, before this happened and it took years. Three different master plumbers were sent to her home. They all said her gas lines for the home were strong and connected properly. All of the items in the consumer’s home, are powered by gas, but the stove was the only item not working properly and the increased gas bill only occurred after the stove was placed in her home.
Over the years, the consumer has gone back and forth with the manufacturer about her issues, while attempting to have the stove repaired/replaced.
2/11/2022: The consumer spoke with the manufacturer and a service appointment was scheduled for 2/14/2022. The consumer was told that if the technician can’t fix it, they may provide a replacement range.
However, the consumer has scheduled numerous appointments over the years, where the technician has not showed up. The consumer then receives text messages that the tech. won’t make it. She said that due to her repeated problems, the service center has added special notes her service calls, to indicate that the she should not be charged for the service calls.
The consumer said that her gas was turned off for several years, as a result of this problem. The consumer believes that the technicians were not coming out due to the repeated service calls and the aspect that she did not have the gas turned on. Even though the manufacturer’s service scheduling staff repeatedly told her the stove could be repaired, even if the gas is not turned on.
Currently, the gas to the consumer’s home is turned off.

Fire in Kenmore Elite Gas Slide-in Range; Model# 790-31073100; Serial# NF23827270I; Purchased at Sears in San Bruno, CA on 10/28/2012 On 10/29/2021 I was preheating my Kenmore Elite Range oven. Suddenly there was white smoke and a pronounced odor of gas. My 85 year old husband opened the oven door and a huge flame shot out toward him. He turned off the oven and the fire would still not go out. He then attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher as I called 911 and the fire department. The fire was finally extinguished. The Fire Department requested that we vacate the premises until they could shut down the gas line and electricity to the oven. The oven is a complete loss and the kitchen will have to be cleaned by professionals to remove the damage from the smoke and chemical residue left from the fire extinguisher. The only injuries were to my husband and myself with the air quality of the home. I have asthma and my husband has COPD.

Kenmore Elite Smooth top electric range turned on by it self, we smelled something “Very Hot” and investigated. Range in kitchen was all lit up, indicator hot lights were all on, Oven top and bottom coils red hot on, cupboards near range to hot to touch. Breaker snapped off and range began to cool down. Hot pad mittens used to pull range away from wall and cupboards.

The caller filed a report on behalf of the consumer (homeowner).
This oven turns on approximately 5 times a day without anyone touching it.
6/16/2021: The respondent called the gas company and they sent technicians out. Their technicians(names unavailable) checked the gas meter outside, but did not find anything wrong.
He called the brand name company’s phone number, but was referred to their website and was unable to speak with a live representative.
The oven made a loud noise in the middle of the night and he went into the kitchen and found that the oven was on full blast. All of the control knobs were in the off position.
When the oven turns on, they leave it on and it eventually turns off by itself.

Electrical Fire. Kenmore Elite gas range slide-in 79036603601 Electrical fire in board which destroyed the control board and inside of the oven is severely damaged. The oven would not stop heating up and heavy electrical fumes came from operating board. Could not turn it off. Had to pull out the (slide-in) range to unplug unit. Good thing my husband & I were in the kitchen when this happened. Sears wants to ‘replace’ the board from 2006 range - under their extended warranty although still researching to find part(s). I am very concerned with safety issues and won’t trust this range ever again. At least once a week, I set the delay function to come on when I am not home - I wouldn’t want to think of what would happen if we had not been home. Sears does not seem concerned with the safety issues from this range - several other occurrences I saw on line - same problem. They will not address the issues or the damage. Cannot believe this range has not been recalled! Thank God, no injuries.

Our Kenmore slide in gas range oven leaked gas into our home, causing a carbon monoxide detector to sound. I was cooking on the stovetop and the flame went out without my knowledge but the eye was still in the turned on position, leaking gas into the air in my home. This has happened multiple times and is very dangerous.

We have a recurring issue with our Kenmore cooktop. The gas isles either blow out when turning on causing the flame to reach further than the surface of the cooktop or when the flame is turned down on some of them the flame actually goes out leaving only gas running. When you turn an isle down while a pot is on it you may not realize that there’s no flame, therefore, allowing gas to build up in our home which is a health and safety hazard. The issue has been reported to Sears several times with no resolution. We have now paid for 3 service visits to fix the issue but still no resolution because the parts are OEM parts that are known to be an issue as I was told by a Sears technician. I am reporting this today because once again the stove has singed the hairs on my arm from the flame blow out. As a matter of fact, the last tech that came this past fall that I called myself experienced the same thing. The hairs on his arm were singed. My family and I should not have to worry about our appliances being safe. My husband and I have to constantly double check out the stove while in use and not in use to make sure we don’t encounter an issue because of the gas and we have to stand back when turning and isle on to avoid being caught on fire.
GAS LEAKAGE IS A MAJOR ISSUE!!! I don’t ever want my family or anyone else’s to endure a major incident or fatality due to something that could have been avoided if Sears had taken measures to protect its customers from hazardous products.

This stove presents a severe laceration risk due to the edges of the door and the drawer being unfinished and razor sharp. I have cut my fingers badly while opening the stove door and the drawer. This stove has also shut off by itself while the gas was on low/low medium fire, filling my home with gas on several occasions. It poses an ongoing risk to my family, especially my infant daughter.

I would like to bring to your attention a potentially serious issue related to the operation of a Kenmore Elite Gas Range, model #790-32363410; serial #AF44900569
We purchased our Kenmore Elite gas range in 2015 from Sears Canada and have had a significant concern with the oven operation over the years - it does not hold temperature. With this, we’ve put in practice a simple, but inconvenient, “work-around” to regularly reset the oven temperature while in use.
However, recently we’ve experienced a much more concerning symptom - a very loud noise/bang, essentially what sounds like a small explosion, presumably related to the oven trying to relight itself and reset the temperature.
After some research, I’ve discovered that certain models of Kenmore Elite gas ranges, also manufactured in 2015, have been recalled. While this recall does not include our specific model, the symptoms and issues described in the bulletin are virtually identical.
With this report, I’m hoping for assistance in having our issues resolved, and of course mitigate the potential of a serious incident related to operation of this range.
I have contacted [REDACTED] Canada through their website and am awaiting a response.

The simmer flame goes off on the dual ring burner while the gas is still being released. Since the simmer flame is small and under the cookware, I cannot see that the flame is no longer there and only notice the problem when the kitchen smells of gas. This gas range is a hazardous product and safety risk.

It first started with a stroke and the doctors were stumped as to what could have cause the stroke, then my wife went twice to ER, complaining of chest pains, my 12 year old started complaining of tightness around her heart. My wife thought that we all might be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, even thought our Carbon alert didn’t go off. She called the fire dept, and they tested our Sears new oven, and said that after 8 mins of being on, their tester registered 400 parts per million of carbon monoxide coming from the oven. living in a mobile they said it wouldn’t have take long to fill our trailer to have been lethal.

We were using the stove top on our range. Two burners were on. I thought I smelled something funny but could not place what I was smelling. I continued to cook and then a large poof of flames came out from under the pans I was using. Large enough to make me step way back and scare the heck out of me. The poof was just one burst of flames and then the flame under each pot went back to normal. I was just standing back still in a little shock of what just happened, and then the two front knobs just melted off the front. And then you could see there was fire filling the space under the lid of the range. We had to have someone run to get pliers so we could turn the knobs off. We did this and then just left it thinking the problem was over and that we would be needing to go buy a new range the next day. After a bit, I realized I still smelled something strange and after looking at the range again, we realized the entire top of the range was very very hot. We couldn’t even touch it. Using tongs, we moved the little cover off of the top of the burner and found that the fire was still going underneath. We were able to put that out and then we pulled the range out and turned off the gas to it. I have a video of the fire and pictures.

While preparing something in the oven, one side of the handle fell off. When my husband went to try and put the handle back on, the glass of the oven door shattered all over the place. Thankfully he was wearing shoes and didn’t sustain any injuries. It very well could have caused injury if a small child was standing there or even my small dog.

i purchased a Kenmore gas range about two years ago model# 79074233313 if you use the oven too much the clock short circuits, i was told the mother board was fried which i don’t know how on a new stove, i then paid for a technician to come out and replace the motherboard in i believe November 2019 and every time i use the oven the clock would short out in which i would call, have the technician come back out who told me it can happen if the oven is used too much or was too hot, and today as i am cooking dinner the top of the stove where the panel is was so hot to the touch that i had to use a kitchen towel to touch it then all of a sudden the whole oven just went out and wont turn back on, i called kenmore who directed me back to the technicians who in turn tell me the motherboard is fried again .i have had a technician come out a total of 3 times for the same problem and nothing is being resolved if one of my children were using the appliance they could have been burned. im sure i am not the only person this is happening to. i have seen online that people are having the same complaints and sears nor kenmore want to recall or replace these ranges.

Caller stated that the gas range powers on by itself without turning it on causing the gas to escape. She stated that the range knobs when brushed slightly brushed against without your knowledge turns on the range. These knobs are located on the front of the range. This incident has been ongoing since installation.
(10/2019) Caller stated that the retailer was contacted and a technician sent out but he was unable to resolve the issue.
Caller feels that this range is unsafe and should be reported.
I normally don’t complain. Yesterday afternoon I smelt gas again. I had leaned against the stove front to wipe off the counter. Leaned on the stove. Turned on gas. Had been on several hours while I’d been to the store. Scary. One needs to be aware when near this stove

I purchased a Kenmore Gas Range Model 790.74419810 on September 6, 2019 from a local Sears store in Southern California as a gift for my niece. The appliance was not delivered to my niece until October 29, 2019. Just 29 days after having the appliance installed my niece was cooking Thanksgiving dinner on November 28, 2019 at 350 degrees when she heard a loud crash from the kitchen. She ran in the kitchen to discover that the inner oven door glass had shattered all over the inside of the range peppering Thanksgiving dinner with shards of hot glass. Her Thanksgiving dinner was completely ruined and the only thing she had to be thankful about was that her two year old son was nowhere near the shards of hot glass when the oven door glass shattered. After further research the day after Thanksgiving we learned that Sears has had this issue with Kenmore ranges ever since 2011 and numerous injuries have resulted over the past 8 years. Despite countless complaints to the CPSC Sears has chosen not to issue a recall nor take the affected model off the market. My wife and I attempted, on November 29, 2019, over the phone with the third party in India Sears has outsourced customer to, to acquire a refund for the obviously defective product but the only response we received was a technician would come out to verify that the glass had actually shattered. As a last resort to get some sort of satisfaction, my wife and I returned to the Sears store on Black Friday November 29, 2109 where we purchased the defective product and forced the store manager to pick up the defective range and refund our money. The Kenmore Gas Range Model 790 is a dangerous product that will soon severely injure someone. Sears is negligent and has with full knowledge continued to sell a dangerous and defective product and all the while focused on profit rather than safety. Please help save the public from this corporate greed.

The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a health hazard.
(September 18) While cleaning the oven she noticed, what she described as fiber glass, all around the interior walls. She contacted her gas company and expressed her concerns. She was informed that she could wipe down the fiber glass and continue using the unit without safety concerns.
But after using the oven the following day (September 19), she noticed fiber glass particles inside while she was cleaning. She contacted Poison Control to get information about health concerns and she was informed that a potential health effect is mouth irritation, which she reports having after eating the food. She did not seek medical attention.
She then contacted the firm to report the matter and request assistance with an inspection but she was informed that an inspection would be at her expense, which she declined. She said she was on the phone for about two hours and she was repeatedly transferred between Sears and Kenmore. She requested information about the safety of the unit but each Rep. declined to answer and proceeded to transfer her to another Rep. She asked to speak with a manager but she was told that a manager was not available and then transferred her to the parts department.
The unit was already in the home when she moved in sometime in 2015. The unit is used daily.

On Sept 14th I utilized the self-cleaning unit on my Kenmore gas stove using the 2 hr setting. Upon completion of the cleaning I noted burn marks on the top of the oven door and the section under the control knobs of the stove top. Also noted are burn marks near vents at the back of the stove top. Sears was contacted on 9/18/19 and stated Sears would send a representative out to check the stove at a cost of $89.00. The above note parts would cost about $269.00. These burn marks I believe are caused by a defect in the stove and is a great safety issue.

I had preheated my Kenmore Elite gas oven, model 790 7751 3800, to 350 degrees and placed a roasted chicken in a small baking pan in it to reheat it. After about ten minutes, I opened the oven door and looked at it and thought maybe it needed a little longer, so I gently closed the door. I stepped over to the sink, about 3 1/2 ft away, when I heard a loud pop, I shrieked and turned to the oven and saw the glass on the oven door shatter and small pieces of glass fall to the floor. I did not have shoes on so I got some sandals that were near by and immediately turned off the oven. After standing there in amazement for a minute or so, I carefully opened the oven door , which was difficult because the broken glass was wedged in the frame, to see if something exploded in the oven. Nothing exploded. I also smelled around the oven after it was turned off to check if there was a gas leak. My husband was in the family room and came over to investigate and see what may have caused it. We could not determine what happened. Neither of us smelled gas, so we proceeded to begin sweeping up the small pieces of glasses that were all over the kitchen floor (I am still finding small pieces around several feet from the oven and my husband cut his foot on a very small sliver of glass that was on the floor, the next day). We were careful to use a vacuum attachment to remove the pieces out of the warming drawer and a wooden skewer to remove what remained of he glass from the frame as well as under the stove. This all occurred during the time when we were supposed to be sitting down to dinner, so it was very aggravating and unnerving, considering the safety issue. I ended up with some cuts on my fingers trying to remove/clean up the glass on the floor and frame to prevent my son and our cats from injury. I also was unsure if we should eat the chicken considering the small pieces of glass that were everywhere, so we opted to eat out. I have an extended warranty but it states that it excludes replacing glass. I just found several [REDACTED] videos and articles today online that mentioned that there have been hundreds of other cases of this occurring with the Kenmore Elite range 790 models, so I wanted to add my terrifying experience to the data. I’m also appauled that there is no recall by Sears and that ranges older than one year are not covered for replacement.

So I just took out the whole plastic panel before anymore came out MELTED MY LIDS THAT WERE TO COVER MY CAKE PAN DESTROYED THE PLASTIC PANEL IN THE MICROWAVE

I WAS BAKING A CHICKEN BREAST IN MY GAS STOVE FROM SEARS KENMORE AND THE TOP OF THE STOVE VERIFIED BY TWO GAS REPAIR MAN FOUND THAT THE TOP OF THE STOVE WAS 140 DEGREES WHICH NOW EXPLAINS WHY THE PLASTIC IN SIDE THE MICROWAVE MELTED AND PIECES FELL INTO MY SAUCE ON THE STOVE SEVERAL TIMES. MY WARRANT COMPANY STATES THAT WAS THE WAY THEY MADE THEM THAT YEAR AS THE STOVE AND BURNERS STILL WORK. IT ALARMS ME AS IF I WAS NOT USING ANY TOP BURNERS, AND THE HEAT REACH 140 DEGREES IT WAS A SAFETY HAZZARD FOR TO MELT A MICROWAVE. TWO GAS REPAIR MAN REPLACED THE BACK MAIN PANEL NO LUCK. I NEED TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOU TO SEE ABOUT RECALLING THIS GAS STOVE. I JUST BOUGHT THE VILLA AND I AM SCARED TO DEATH DUE TO THE HIGH HEAT HE PUSHES OUT ON TOP OF THE STOVE TO MELT THE MICROWAVE ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WHEN I GO TO CLEAN IT, I DON’T LIKE THE SMELL BUT WILL NOT CLEAN IT DURING MY SLEEP TIME AGAIN AS A UNSAFE SAFETY HAZARD. On Christmas morning (December 25, 2018) while heating sweet buns in the Kenmore Elite (gas) oven ( Model No.. 790.3262) at a moderate temperature (275 degrees) the front glass panel of the oven door suddenly and without any warning shattered into hundreds of small pieces and blew across the kitchen. Luckily, no one was standing close to the oven or surely the glass would have badly lacerated him/her. The range/oven came with this new home purchased 2 1/2 years ago. The oven has been used very little over this period of time.

This 85 year old consumer purchased a gas range from a retailer in California. That was installed October 25th, 2018. The caller states that she rarely used the range but that she used it for the first time around the end of October 2018 at which time she became very ill but she thought it was because of something she had eaten. She used it rarely during November and until Christmas and each time she became very ill then on Christmas Day she used it most of the day then December 26th, 2018 she could barely get up she was so ill. She has been feeling ill since this range was installed in her home then contacted the gas company December 27, 2018 over 500 ppm. The gas company employee immediately helped her open doors and windows, then red tagged her range and explained to her that she could not use the range and if she had been using it every day since she may not have survived. She was medically checked Kaiser’s Marino Valley walk in clinic where they checked her levels then advised her that just as she had been feeling a bit better the past few days she will continue to regain memory, cognitive thinking as she is not exposed to the carbon monoxide anymore. She contacted the place of purchase December 27th, 2018 after the gas tech left and a representative is scheduled to come to her home to look at the range.

Last night I was heating up some left overs in our brand new Kenmore Gas Oven and all of a sudden we hear a big explosion. The inside glass shattered and exploded all over the oven. Oven was purchased 30 Sept 2018 and installed on the 12th of Oct. We have only used it a few times and have not damaged the glass. After a couple of hours on the phone with Sears/ Kenmore they tell me the glass is not covered under the manufactures 1 year warranty! We were lucky the exterior glass did not break but if someone or a pet is in front of the oven when it happens could be bad. We have only had the oven for a few weeks so its not because we damaged the glass or didn’t push the racks all the way in (really) Kemore Gas Range model number 664.75123610

The consumer stated that she is just getting back into her home after a fire that occurred in her Kenmore range. There was damage to her kitchen cabinets as well as damage to the stove.
(06/20/2018) The consumer stated that she turned on the self-cleaning feature before leaving for work but advised her daughter that the feature was on. Her daughter advised her that during the self-cleaning of the oven, there was a carbon monoxide warning from the smoke detectors that had just been put up two weeks prior. Her daughter left the house and called the fire department.
It was later determined by the insurance company that the fire was caused by items in the storage bin that is under the oven. The consumer stated that she had lids for pots, warming stones and other items in the bin.
The consumer stated that nowhere in the owner’s manual for the product does it advise consumers to remove items from the storage bin before using the self-cleaning feature.
(12/03/2018) The consumer contacted the manufacturer and was advised that there is no recall on the product. The consumer was also advised to contact CPSC.

3 years ago I purchased the Kenmore model number 790.74333311 Gas range oven. In the past year the oven had a hard time lighting and I would have to light a burner for it to come on. On Saturday November 17th 2018 I came home from work and at 9 am I turned my oven on to preheat for some food. about 10 minutes in it was still at 100 and then I heard a loud pop. The stove and all the electronics on it was black. I never had an issue with my electric before but decided I would unplug it and plug it into the outlet below then one it was currently in. As soon as I went to go unplug it I noticed a flame from behind the stove, I hollered for my son as I am unplugging it to come help me pull the stove out. Well upon pulling it out I observed the electrical cord melted from heat on the back of the oven and melted and burned. Fire was out and I called sears, instead of helping me they wanted to sell me a home protection plan. This is a fire hazard and had I not had an open floor plan or my teenagers decide to use it while I was not home, I am positive my house would have burnt down. Never in my life have I ever had a gas stove get hot behind it and catch the electrical cord on fire upon melting. never have I had a cord melt on one. It is a fire hazard and with 0” clearance like the guide calls for it is a safety hazard to have in ones home. I took pictures immediately.. {But can not upload them from computer at this time]

The product, in the report: Sears/Kenmore 30” natural gas range - black/stainless steel.

My wife was cooking supper in my natural gas oven which is located in my kitchen when after the oven was on for about 10 minutes, there was a very strong odor of gas in the kitchen that seemed to be coming from the oven. So we turned off the oven, opened the windows, called National Grid, our gas company, and evacuated our house. Approximately, 30 minutes later, the National Grid gas technician arrived, and examined and tested all of the gas pipes in our basement, as well as our oven. He determined that the our gas oven was malfunctioning when it was on and was passing too much gas into it resulting in a high level of natural gas and carbon monoxide to be emitted from inside the oven. He closed the shut off valve on the gas pipe just behind the oven. He told us that our oven was very dangerous and recommended that we junk it and buy a new one. We followed his recommendation. My wife and I had headaches and felt queasy for a couple of days following this incident.

I have a kenmore gas range the first problem is that i felt the outside was too hot and it melted a near by coating on a drawer had it checked and the tech agreed it was hot but said it was within specs
a bit later i noticed that occasionally i smelled gas from the oven and upon ignition the igniton noise sounded rather loud -sort of violent h-ard to explain but much louder than usual it did not happen all the time again had it serviced and was told nothing was wrong so when this continued to occasionally happen i ignored it
two weeks ago i had started oven and had a tray with a piece of aluminum foil loosely placed on top of the tray which was resting on the stove top waiting till the oven reached temperature I was not paying too close attention until it ignited with a loud boom and the tray rattled and the aluminum flew off
I called again for service - they seem to be guessing as to whats wrong and ordered a valve meantime i had gas company out who red flagged the appliance due to delayed ignition
i am in the process of requesting a new oven with no further work to be done- this is scary and i believe unsafe- Sears is somewhat dragging it’s feet but i do believe they will honor it due to safety concerns and the fact that i have only had oven for 5 months
please look into this model before someone gets hurt especially when told nothing is wrong by repair people i had gas ovens my whole life told them this was wrong and i felt i should not smell gas at all
meantime we are able to use the range top without incident

Caller is reporting that she placed her oven on self clean mode. After the unit had completed the task she noticed that the heat at melted the top part of door handles under the knobs. She stated that if the oven clean had not stop when it did there would have been a house fire. She does not feel that the oven is safe to use anymore.
Caller stated that she contacted the retailer who advised her that her model was not included in a recall and to contact the agency to report the incident. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet but she will do so at a later time.

I am reporting a serious safety concern with a Sears Kenmore Elite series gas range I purchased in March of 2018. The range has 5 knobs on the front of the range that control 5 corresponding burners. I have had at least 4 different instances where the knobs have been bumped accidentally and the gas turned on without lighting the burner, causing gas to leak into the house. One instance the gas was left on all day and I can home to a house smelling of gas.
The knobs are like most gas ranges where the knob must be pushed in and then turned to turn on the gas and ignite the burner. On this particular range the knob “Push” part of the knob is very short and turns very easily. On previous gas ranges I have owned the knob had to be pushed in a lot before it would turn and also required substantial effort to push and turn. This is not the case with this range. The knob pushes and turns far to easy and does not require much push distance before turning. Thus, a small child could easily walk up to the front of the range and turn on a burner or just the gas. The knobs are within reach on the front of the range.
I believe this condition could cause an explosion in my house.

The submitter is reporting his range for posing an injury hazard. He said the oven door’s outer glass shattered to pieces and went everywhere in the kitchen. A person accidently stepped on a piece of glass and sustained an injury. The inner glass is still intact.
The oven was used approximately an hour before the incident. The oven was used for about 45 minutes on a bake setting at 360 degrees.
The unit was repaired about a year ago and he believes the heating element was replaced due to the stovetop burners failing to ignite.
The submitter contacted the firm today and reported the incident. He was told that his unit was not recalled and out of warranty. The firm refused to provide assistance with free inspection or repairs and he was referred to contact CPSC for assistance.
The submitter said he has read other reports for glass shattering on similar models.
The oven is used 2-3 times a week and the stove top is used about everyday.

I have a Kenmore Elite range, purchased as a floor model in March 2017. The burners do not require you to push in before turning and you simply just turn the knob. It has happened on a few occasions that the gas gets turned on and no burner and you can smell the gas.
Last week Sunday, it was a hot muggy day and the a/c was running. My son was inside sleeping and I went in about an hour and half later to check on him, immediately as soon as I opened the door, the whole house was full of gas.

I was preheating the oven to 350 degrees when the oven door suddenly exploded sending glass all over the kitchen and countertops. The explosion also knocked the handle off one side of the oven door. This is the second time the incident has happened, the first was in 2012. At that time it was still under warranty and the oven door was replaced after many weeks.
It’s a SEARS, Kenmore model number 790.36902901. It was delivered in January 2011.

Consumer stated that the oven was in use broiling on high for approximately 30 mins, smoke started to emit from the side and top of the oven door and then flames erupted on the interior of the oven which caused the glass door to shatter and melt. She used water to contain the flames, there was an error code F10 beeping on the control panel alerting them that the oven was overheating.
Consumer stated that the control panel has been replaced 3 times for the past 3 years. Most current September 2017. The retailer was contacted and she was advised to contact the manufacturer and report the incident she was transferred to the agency. (6/7/18) A service technician was sent out and she was advised that because of the fire it is a cosmetic issue and cannot replace the door,
Consumer feels that this oven is a fire hazard and should be reported.

Caller stated that he used the self clean feature for the first time and it melted the plastic door frame of the oven. The knobs on the front of the stove were also melted. The oven is no longer operable since the plastic door frame is melted it will no longer keep heat inside the oven. The caller is still able to use the stove top.

The submitter said that each of the burners have a cap that sits on the burner head and the burner head is warping causing the flames to be erratic. He also expressed his concerns with the use of two different metals on the unit and it caused the burner screws to rot, which poses an explosion hazard.
He said he noticed these safety issues about 6 months ago and he contacted the firm. They told him that the unit was not recalled and they wouldn’t provide a repair free of charge.

The product, in the report: gas range with oven and storage drawer underneath the oven

Within 2 weeks of having the range, the consumer found that she could not close the storage drawer on the range after it was opened. When this first happened, the drawer remained open for approximately 1 week.
1/8/2018: The consumer called the company that delivered the range (Tel: [REDACTED]), and they arranged for a technician to come back out.
1/13/2018: A tech. from the delivery company came out and looked at the range. He told the consumer “that he has worked on this manufacturer’s brand of range and all of them have a problem with the storage bin. It is the material that is used that causes the problem.” He took a wrench and smoothed out the edges of the storage bin. The tech. closed the bin. However, the consumer did not want to take a chance opening the bin again and having it stuck. So, she no longer uses it. She feels that if it is opened and get stuck, she could trip over it and cut herself when moving around it or attempting to close it.
1/25/2018: The consumer called the firm’s Product’s Resolution Line and they listened to her issue and referred her back to the store. She was then told that Sears (retailer) should be able to exchange the range for her address her issue in some way. She was then transferred to the U.S. CPSC Hotline.

Kenmore Gas Range burners blow out during use, causing gas to leak into the home, creating a health hazard and explosion risk.
On multiple occasions while using my Kenmore Gas Range, the burners blow out on their own. There is also no lock out on the knobs that control the burners, allowing them to be engaged by bumping them, and releasing gas. There have been 7 occasions that the burners have blown out and released gas into my home. The first occasion was in 2012 (6 months after purchase and install by Sears.) The burner blew out while cooking and released gas into my home over a 15 hour period, killing my dog from the fumes.
The subsequent occasions were all caught within minutes, until 1/21/18. This evening the burner blew out and released gas into my home for 9 hours, and i was able to vent the home after becoming ill from the smell.

Caller is reporting that his gas range when in use the flames goes out but gas continues to escape. This has been ongoing for about a year. He has to consistently turn the gas off. There has been no other incidents or service calls. 1/22 He contacted the seller who informed him that his model was not included in a recall.
Caller is concerned that the gas leaking into his home is unsafe and that the company should give him a free inspection on this matter.

Purchased a Kenmore Gas Stove recently - model # 790 74339314.
While working around the stove, if you lightly brush up against the burner control knobs the burner will turn on. This has happened numerous times to us.
Last evening, my wife was working in the kitchen. She came in to the family room and we watched TV for about an hour. I went into the kitchen to a strong smell of gas. Two of the burner control knobs were slightly on. Not enough for the ignitor to activate but enough to let gas come out.
You need to push the knob in SLIGHTLY to turn it, but it is such a slight amount that lightly brushing against it turns it on. Again, in the few months we have had the stove this has happened to us a dozen times or more.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore double oven gas stove. Left oven is approx 9” wide. Right oven is full size. The incidents have happened with the right oven where the rack and contents fall when pulling out the rack.

For the Kenmore stove, model 790-75603702, which has a small and a large oven, the walls of the large oven have moved out so that the racks barely stay in position. When pulling out the rack it is likely to fall if it slides to one side or the other. In other words, the rack width is less than the width of the oven allowing the rack to fall. We recently were pulling out a small turkey and the oven rack fell spilling hot grease all over the oven, the open door, and the kitchen floor. Luckily no one was burned but it could have easily happened. This has occured multiple times, particularly when someone new is using the oven. This is a big danger for physically injury or a grease fire.

On Sunday, the submitter was using her oven when the outer glass spontaneously shattered into pieces. The submitter said she had the oven on the Bake setting at 350 degrees and it was on for approximately 15-20 minutes before the incident occurred. The submitter said the middle and inner glass is still intact. The submitter noticed that the glass went about 4 feet from the oven.
The submitter said the range was repaired approximately a year ago by a technician with Sears. The submitter said the oven’s igniter was failing, causing the oven to fill up with gas and then pop the door open.
The submitter contacted the retailer, Sears regarding the incident on Sunday and they informed her that her range is not recalled. They also informed her that the range was out of warranty and they could not provide a free repair. They suggested the submitter repair the range but she refused to pay for a repair. The submitter requested to file a report and they gave her the # to CPSC Hotline.
The submitter said she also contacted the firm, Kenmore and they told her that they could only assist with repairs. When the submitter asked to speak with a supervisor she was told that they do not have supervisors. The repairs offered by Kenmore were paid by the submitter as the product was out of warranty.
The submitter said the appliances in her home were purchased by the builder and she moved into the home approximately 2 years ago. She said she uses the oven 3-4 times a month.

kenmore elite gas cooktop 36”: Cooktop burner controls and base surround plate will cause 1st thru 3rd degree burns to anyone touching the base plate or control knobs when in contact with human fingers, hands or flesh. Ours has always been a hazard to anyone, regretfully we never reported the problem and we never were advised the unit’s burner control knobs and base would get super hot by sale people at SEARS. My wife has burned herself several times when trying to control the flame on a burner as have I and other members of family. Upon examination of the burner grills, there does not appear to be any method of preventing the transfer of grill heat to the cooktop main top. The grills all maintain contact with the main top. Not sure if this is the main cause, but it seems probable that the grills should have some sort of separation to prevent the main top and the control knobs from getting super hot. Our bad for not reporting it sooner, but we learned to use pot holders a long time ago to turn the hot knobs...

(11/28/2016) The consumer stated that he smelled gas right after the product was installed. The consumer contacted the firm. A technician came out. A part had to be ordered. After the part was installed the consumer was advised that it is normal to smell gas.
The consumer stated that he takes a while for the oven to ignite Also, flames occasionally comes from the vent on the top of the stove.
(07/09/2017) The consumer stated that his wife turned on the oven to preheat to 500 degrees. After about ten minutes, she opened the door. When she opened the oven door, six inch flames shot out of the oven. The flames singed her eyebrows, arms, eyelashes and her hairline.
The consumer stated that flames shot out before when she preheated the oven to 350 degrees but the flames were not as high.
No medical attention was required.
(07/10/2017) The consumer contacted the firm and was advised that the product was not on warranty nor on recall.

Kenmore 74033 Gas Range - I have reported this before. It is easy to bump the front controls and unknowingly slightly turn on the gas. There is too much travel in the control that it will release gas long before it turns far enough to reach the ignition phase. Luckily the windows were open and we caught it before big trouble.

Consumer is reporting that her gas range/oven has a failure. She stated that she is was on her way to leave the home when she heard a clicking noise and realized that her oven had powered on itself. They attempted to cancel the operation several times but each time it powered back on. Her spouse eventually turn off the gas and disconnect the unit.
Consumer stated that when this incident occurred it made the room extremely hot. (6/19/17) She contacted the retailer and she was informed that the range is out of warranty and she should report it to the agency.
Consumer feels that the range/oven is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

I smelled gas in kitchen and called power company. Power company identified gas coming from gas range and shut off supply and advised an appliance service check appliance. Appliance repair identified all 4 gas burners were leaking gas. $388 for repair. My concern is other consumers may not detect problem before it is too late.

Caller stated that the range makes a clicking noise without anyone touching or using the gas range. This causes gas to escape into the in the air which can cause an explosion. She stated that the broiler mode has never worked since installation but the retailer was not willing to assist. She stated that she noticed the failure about 1 week ago. Most recently the incident occurred in the early am on Monday, they unplugged the unit for safety precaution.

In November of 2016 I bought a Kenmore Gas Stove Model 790-74323313. This stove has burners that turn on when anyone is near the stove. I was making toast next to it and apparently leaned on it. I did not know it was on until a family member smelled gas. I have put a carbon monoxide monitor next to it. It has gone off once. Usually we catch it before the monitor sounds. The burners are very very easy to turn on and this can be dangerous. The burner on the right front is very big and flames come out over the edge of the stove -not good with small children - so we don’t use it.

Kenmore Gas Stove Model 790 7403 3310 Serial No. VF34167183. In the process of performing an “oven clean” function as provided for on the stove and in accordance with the owners manual, the plastic trim piece on the oven door and the burner control knobs melted setting off the smoke alarms in the house. The plastic melted and dripped on the floor and into the interior of the oven door. I called Sears and Kenmore to inquire if a safety recall had been issued and to have a service technician examine the gas stove to determine the nature of the failure and to determine if the store would be safe to use after repair. No safety recalls were in the Sears/Kenmore data base. This appears to be a fire hazard.

We purchased our home in August 2016 and it came with new appliances for the kitchen. The last month-and-a-half, our entire family has been experiencing extreme lethargy and headaches. On a hunch, my wife called the local gas company to check our home for possible carbon monoxide (CO) leaks.
The gas company discovered that the new Kenmore gas range (Model #790.74133311, Serial #VF61509666) in the kitchen was leaking CO. They determined that it was the result of a faulty oven manifold and not an installation issue. The gas range is faulty and dangerous.
I called Sears and explained the situation and that I wanted a repair or replacement for their dangerously faulty product. Their response, because the warranty expired less than a month ago, was sorry, but there’s a charge.
They did not care that the product could harm or kill someone. Their only concern was not to have to deal with a repair or replacement out of their pocket...

While gently opening the oven door the handle released from its screw on one side and caused the whole glass face of the oven to shatter. My mother, husband and myself were standing in the blast zone. I received cuts to my bare feet. I am very thankful that my 1 year old daughter was not in the area and that she was not the one to pull on the oven handle. The amount of pressure I had placed on the handle was VERY minimal. This experience was nerve-racking for new parents. Sears and Kenmore’s customer service was not concerned in the slightest that this is a potential hazard. They claimed that in order for the oven to shatter like that we had to have hit it hard with something, which is false. There are no recalls on this range per Sears, but if you search the internet many other people have had this issue with glass faced ranges.

The product, in the report: Four burner gas range with a 5th that has two heads. Gas/Convection oven and warmer drawer

The surface burner control valves only need to be depressed 1/8” to turn on the flow of natural gas. Since the unit is the electric spark lighting variety, the knob has to be in a relatively small area to cause ignition. When reaching into the matching microwave or the cabinet above, it is not difficult to depress the valve the 1/8”. Twisting to reach for something could and has turned the knob and cause the natural gas to flow. To turn the knobs on a ccw turn is made, which if not turned too far turns on the Hi gas and ignition. Turned too far or very little and nothing happens but the flow of gas. This has occurred four times with this unit. After the 1st occurrence Sears was advised and made a couple of suggestions, but no service. For my families safety I purchased a natural gas detector. The next occurrence it worked fine, setting off a alarm when it detected the gas. The next two times it did not, and with the slow build up of gas it wasn’t noticed until strong levels reached the other rooms of the house. The knob activates the flow anywhere from 1/8 to almost 1/2 inch. 1/8 is defiantly too small. In my opinion something like 3/8 inch would eliminate our problem and also make it more child safe.

On Sunday 4/16/17 I was cooking Easter dinner and my Carbon Monoxide detector went off, my alarm company called me and said they were dispatching the Fire Dept to my house. I have a Kenmore gas range and it released Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, the levels were so high it took the Fire Dept over an hour to get the levels back down, if I didn’t have a CM Detector it would have been deadly. I saw on the internet about the recall on past Kenmore gas ranges however my stove is not one of the models on this recall. I called Kenmore and they said sorry your stove is out of warranty. you will have to repair it at your own expense. I feel this is a defect in their product and they should stand behind their product.

The product, in the report: Gas Range

I used a burner on the gas range to heat a pan, then put the pan in the oven to finish it. I thought I had turned the burner off because no flame was visible.
I went to bed after dinner but was awoken by my carbon monoxide alarm about 4 hours later. It indicated a CO level >50ppm. There was a petroleum smell and I followed it to the kitchen where I noticed the range burner was on and warm. I turned the burner off, opened the windows, and the CO alarm stopped sounding.
The next morning I looked at the burner and noticed that the inside was coated with soot. I tried lighting the burner, turning it almost off, and noticed that it remained warm and gave off a petroleum smell even though no flame was visible. It seems that if the knob is between “Off” and “Lite” there is a small flame within the burner assembly that is not visible.

(01/13/2017) The consumer stated that she was standing in the kitchen. The oven was not in use. The left side of the oven door handle fell. When the consumer opened the oven door to see if she could screw the handle back in, the outer glass of the oven door exploded. No one was injured.
(01/13/2017) The consumer contacted Sears. She was advised that there was nothing that they could do. She was advised that they would have to check for a recall. No recall was found but there was service flash.
The consumer was referred to Product Resolution. The consumer was advised that a refund product safety form would be filled out . She was also advised that she would be contacted within 24 hours. The consumer did not hear from anyone.
(01/18/2017) The consumer contacted Sears again today. She was advised that the form had been denied and that there was no record of her previous phone call.

When operating this oven, the area venting the heat across the stove-top gets VERY hot. I tested it with a thermometer last night and it got to 220 degrees in 5 minutes, and that was as high as the thermometer goes. It has done this ever since it was purchased in 2013, but I thought it was typical of gas ovens. Now I’ve learned that it absolutely should not get this hot. It would literally melt a plastic bowl on top of the range with only the oven turned on.

Kenmore Gas Stove... model 74033 Very easy to accidentally bump and release knob to turn on gas.... however the ignite position requires an eighth of a turn but gas is flowing even with the knob just cracked... has happened twice in the last month since purchase.. today filled the entire kitchen with gas... was able to vent without incident. It seems there may be a design flaw in that gas should not flow until knob gets close to ignite position. My friend has a Kenmore gas stove and the same thing has happened to him.

Caller stated that his dual gas range turns on accidentally if brushed against the knobs, which causes the gas to escapes in his home. (10/26/16) He contacted Sears and complained but they are unwilling to assist him. He stated that this incident has been ongoing since installation. He stated that he has had more than 40 incidents.
Caller feels that this range is a safety hazard and should be recalled.

We have a 30” Kenmore Elite Gas Convection Self Cleaning Range Model #790-79363406. My husband and I were not in the kitchen (thank goodness) and my husband heard a popping sound and then a sound like alot of pills or something hitting our tile floor. We went in and the glass door had shattered in a lot of tiny pebble-like little pieces. It was continuing to shatter as we watched it. The oven had not been used for 3 days prior to this shattering. The oven was not on during the shattering.

The product, in the report: gas range

(5/9/16) The consumer turned on the right front burner to medium heat for about 1 minute. The consumer then opened the oven door and noticed that the flame went out. The consumer states that this is a persistent issue since she purchased the range. The consumer decided to test all the burners and noticed when the burners are on low heat and the oven door it opened the flame will go out. However, when the burners are on high heat level and the oven door is opened then the flames get lower and once the oven door is closed the flames get higher.
The consumer went online and came across recall # 15-142 and the consumer called the firm’s recall hotline (800-873-5011). The consumer was advised by the Rep. (name unknown) that her range was not part of the recall and the consumer was advised to contact Kenmore.

The product, in the report: Slide In Gas Range, Stainless Steel Model name or number Serial number: These numbers match the numbers on the inside of oven but the consumer noticed on the receipt the technician gave her it says: model number: 79032643310* Serial number same: AF44600128

The consumer stated that she and her husband started feeling sick about two weeks ago. They would get severe headache, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. The consumer’s husband also had a high fever.
The consumer could smell propane gas in the over after she would use the oven to bake. On 4/7/16, the consumer was baking and strong propane gas fumes filled the house. The consumer had to ventilate the and leave the area for a bit.
The consumer contacted Sears right away. They sent out a technician on 4/8/16. The technician identified the problem to the ignitor and regulator. The technician stated that the oven does not ignite after pre-heat and leaks a lot of gas during that time. The consumer was informed that the unit was igniting after releasing a lot of gas and that could have cause an - the consumer believes he said it could have been very bad. The technician ordered a new regulator and ignitor. The consumer is supposed to receive the parts this week.
The technician is returning back on 4/15/16 to install the new parts. The technician informed the consumer that they can continue using the stove top. The consumer was not comfortable using the stove top and cut off all gas to the unit.
The consumer had a 225 gallons of propane gas deliver on 3/21/16. The consumer stated that the supply usually lasts at least 2 months. Instead, within 3 weeks, the propane gas was completely empty when they checked on 4/10/16.
The consumer and her husband are feeling better after cutting of the gas to the unit.
The consumer has a master protection plan so there was no charge for any of the service or parts.
The consumer’s unit appears to be included in recall # 15-142 but for different hazard than the one that they experienced.
4/15/2016 Technician replaced regulator and ignitor. This did not fix problem so he ordered a BakeBurner and setup an appointment for 4/20/2016.
4/20/2016 Technician replaced the BakeBurner. He showed the consumers the new BakeBurner was different than the original BakeBurner which came with the oven. 3 holes have been added to the new one to make sure it ignites. (holes added by the manufacturer NOT technician) He took pictures of the new and old BakeBurner and called in a report on it.

Fire crews responded to a report of a residential structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews located a fire within the oven of a natural gas stove. The property owner discovered flames coming from the oven while the appliances was preheating to cook dinner. The fire was contained to the interior of the oven.

When operating the oven under normal conditions at 475° for 20 minutes the keypad melted. The keypad is located above the gas range and the vent is located directly underneath that so when the oven vents all of the heat rises up in front of the keypad causing the whole panel to get excessively hot and consequently, melting the command keypad controls for the oven. I received second degree burns to my R hand, index and middle finger. I was treated by my husband, an emergency first responder. The oven range model No, is listed as Kenmore Gas Range 790.7231, 7233 P/N 316901016 Rev C. purchased in 9/2013 The range receives light, household use only and oven intermittent or infrequent use at normal temperatures. (Since melting, the keypad now inadvertently sounds the timer and flashes error code F11, according to the manual means keypad short.) Since the incident, it has been necessary to unplug and re-plug in the range in order to use it: we cannot afford a new one at the moment so this has been more than a burden and safety issue with two infant children in the house, to pull the range out, plug it in and unplug it after every use. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The product, in the report: Gas range

Caller stated that she and her family received CO poisoning from the range. She stated that she had been feeling ill and then her husband started to feel ill the date of incident. The CO alarm went off,the fire department was called, and who in turn called for the Hazmat team. Hazmat called for EMS who conveyed her and her family to the Detroit Receiving Hospital emergency. They were treated and released, where they had to stay in a hotel. She had noticed these health symptoms for about 2 weeks prior, which included headaches, eventually followed by intermittent vision loss flashes followed by blurry vision, hearing impairment and chest pain. She suffered confusion the day of incident.
10/2/15 The gas company came out for inspection and declared that the CO came from the gas range. The gas company left a pink slip, stating that the range is dangerous and hazardous, and is not to be repaired, but replaced by the manufacturer.
The corporate offices of the store chain (where the range was purchased} was contacted on 10/2/2015 about the incident, and someone phoned her back on 10/06/2015, informing her that a claim number (REDACTED) was in process and that she should send all reports and medical bills to her. Also, the representative stated that she was going to contact the manufacturer of the stove, so they could arrange for pick-up of the stove for testing. On,11/6/2015, she received a call from the representative for the store chain, not to contact her anymore, and that all contact,medical bills and reports should be forwarded to the manufacturer. On, 11/5/2015, same date, a representative from the manufacturer phoned her, informing her that he was from Risk Management, and he also handles medical bills and reports. Claimant informed him, that the corporate rep. for the store chain, requested that she not contact her anymore, that he (representing the manufacturer), would be handling the incident moving forward. Per the rep for the manufacturer, he would give her a call. The manufacturer generated a claim number. On 11/11/2015,the claimant faxed the manufacturer copies of the Fire Dept./Hazmat/EMS report ,Gas Company report, and Medical Bills and receipts received up to that point. As of 02/24/2016, Electrolux hasn’t arranged for pick-up of the stove for testing, therefore, no compensation for stove or medical bills has been received.

The product, in the report: It’s a kenmore elite double oven range model # 66578009800 and serial # 10043493ng

My kenmore elite gas double oven range has an issue where the upper over. Turns on by its self at random times of the day and night then we turn it off and again just turns on..does not happen every day but does happen about 2 to 3 times a weeK and sometimes when we are all a sleep it turns on.we have called sears to fix it but they say they can’t because they can’t locate the sticker with the model and serial number on it even though we have it written down on the instruction Manuel when it was purchased. It’s a very dangerous matter and we have 2 young kids in our home.

(1/7/16) The consumer had a technician from a local gas company inspect her home because she had noticed a strange odor in the kitchen evening of 1/6/16 and again 1/7/16. The consumer was advised that the range was leaking gas. The technician turned the gas supply off and advised the consumer to stop using the range.
The consumer states she had a similar incident with her other Kenmore gas range and she filed a report.
Called Sears Repair, 1/8/16, spoke with “[REDACTED]” refuses to give a case # documenting the consumer reported incident (gas leak) with stove.
1/8/16 The consumer wrote a letter to Sears Headquarters reporting incident and requested replacement stove.
The consumer believes the range is not safe and should be investigated.
1/13/16 The consumer had Sears Repair come out/paid service call. Regulator and valve not closing properly (2 gas leaks) cost for repair would be $502.95.
The consumer uses the range about 3 times a week.
1/15/16 Contacted by Sears; spoke with [REDACTED], referred consumer to [REDACTED] (liability company for Sears) filed claim.
1/27/16 Contacted by Sears, spoke with [REDACTED], says stove out of warranty
2/1/16 Spoke with [REDACTED], Frigidaire (manufacturer of this Kenmore stove) recall dept. She says all liability is with Sears once Kenmore placed on stove.
Have been given no compensation. See attached letters, receipts, photos etc.
