The product, in the report: 5.0 Freestanding range
In July 2014 I purchased a Kenmore 5.0 cu freestanding gas range. During the holidays this year my range started to beep displaying a error message, F10. I searched my manual and couldn’t find anything so I went to the internet and found other customer complaining about the same thing. The post said I should unplug my range for 20 to 40 minutes to reset the gauge that controls temperature. I did this and the range started again, but we smelled gas so we unplugged the range again. I called Sears and all they did was try to sell me a home warranty package. My concern is that I’m not a person who cooks a lot and hardly ever uses the oven for much more than pizza. Now my family is afraid of gas poisoning. It seems that there was a lot of post from customers. Has there been any recalls for this product. It’s clearly a manufacturing error.

Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 2, 2015, sent to the company Jan 20, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 6, 2016
The product, in the report: Gas Oven Range
11/27/2015 - The consumer was cooking in the oven when the carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in her home went off for approximately twenty minutes. The consumer changed its battery thinking it was faulty but then the alarm went off again. The consumer contacted her gas company, Xcel Energy, and after inspection, they found out the source of the high levels of CO being leaked were coming from her oven range. The oven was emitting 2,000 ppm of CO, the highest the Service Technician had ever seen according to him. Deeming her oven range unsafe, he disconnected it. The Service Technician informed the consumer that in order to get her oven range back on, it would have to be serviced by a qualified professional.
12/01/2015 - A Service Technician by the name of [REDACTED] and from Complete Appliance Repair inspected the consumer’s unit. He said the flame on the stovetop was fine but the heat shield/ flame spreader was completely corroded by the heat, which he believes is what was emitting the excess CO levels.
The consumer contacted the retailer and was referred to Kenmore since her product is out of warranty. Kenmore referred her back to the retailer for the same reason. The consumer filed a report with the retailer: Case Number [REDACTED], and was advised to pay ninety dollars for an inspection, which the consumer will not pay for since the issue is a faulty part that corroded not due to misuse. The consumer was also given the contact information to their corporate office as well as to the manufacturer of the oven range. The consumer has yet to speak to either party.
The consumer indicates that her eyes became very irritable after she had to open the oven door. The consumer had to wash her face and use eye-drops. The consumer indicates the eye irritation lasted approximately thirty minutes.
The consumer does not feel safe with the product even if the heat shield is replaced as she feels the problem can persist.

The product, in the report: Cooktop
12/01/2015 - The consumer cleaned the surface of her cooktop and went to sleep. When the consumer’s husband got home approximately two hours later, he immediately woke the consumer up because of the smell of gas all around their home. The consumer must have accidentally turned the knob to one of the burners of the cooktop thus releasing gas. The consumer had to open all doors and windows, as well as evacuate for approximately an hour.
The consumer indicates that she was unaware that the knob had turned as she never heard any clicking sound indicating that it was on.
12/02/2015 - The consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to informed the consumer that her product is out of warranty and that any inspections, repairs and labor would have to be paid for out of pocket.
The consumer indicates that this issue has happened numerous times. She has contacted the retailer to complain about the same problem every year but is always told the same thing: that that is the design of the stove and nothing can be done.
The consumer indicates that she has received several minor burns in her arms and hands that never required medical attention.
The consumer believes the knobs turn too easily and can pose a serious safety hazard to consumers, especially to smaller children.
Dec 15th 2015
The consumer also wanted to add that her son was also sleeping with me at the time of the incident. It’s a very dangerous gas cooker, especially as it has very powerful amount of gas emitting out of the different rings. The dials are very easy for children to turn as you do not have to really rotate them to turn on gas, they can be turned on by mereley brushing against your clothes.
Another point to note is that the consumer also own a [REDACTED] built in Oven which has similar issues , of the dials not coming to a proper stop and easily turning. Also dials have melted because they are not able to stand the heat of the oven.
The consumer hopes something is done to rectify this situation, it is unacceptable that a company like Sears would not be interested in the safety it’s own products and it’s customers.
Thanks

The product, in the report: The oven door consists of an inner heavier glass door and a thinner outer tempered glass door on the front. It is the outer tempered glass door that exploded.
Kenmore outer oven door (tempered glass) exploded without warning sending glass over 10 feet away, including onto countertops. This is the second time this has happened. Door was replaced a year ago. Both times the oven had been used a couple of hours before the door glass shattered without being touched.

The consumer stated that they came home from work and found that the outer panel of the glass of the oven door had exploded into many, little pieces.
The incident happened while no one was home. The oven had not been used in several weeks.
The consumer contacted Kenmore/Sears in regards to the incident. They informed her that they will send a technician out for a service call but she would have to pay the cost of service, part and repair. The consumer refused to pay for service since the incident did not occur at their fault. After speaking with various people the consumer was referred Sedgwick Claims. The consumer spoke to their representative, [REDACTED], and explained the situation. The consumer was provided a claim # and advised to call Sears back with the claim #. The consumer was to contact Sears and inform that this is a diagnostic service call at no charge.
The consumer contacted Sears and a technician, [REDACTED], came on 11/2/15 for an inspection. The technician came with a regular service order and asked the consumer to pay. The product, in the report: Duel gas range with front controls.
The Kenmore Elite Duel Gas Range is dangerous. It has the potential to seriously burn the person using it and starting a fire. The burners are explosive when it ignites. This is because gas escapes at full force for several seconds before it ignites. The flames extend past the controls of the stove. I have had instances where my pans have been engulfed in flames. I feel every time I use the kenmore elite gas range I am putting myself and the people around me in danger.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite slide-in gas range with dual ring burner.
We purchased Kenmore Elite gas range with dual ring burner on September 20, 2014. The dual ring burner was not lighting up every time, we had to turn it on and off a few times until it would burn properly. A week after the warranty expired it stopped burning all together and now it’s leaking gas. We called Sears telling them about the danger of this gas range. Customer service representative suggested we buy another warranty (spend $300 dollars in addition to paying $3,000 for the range), otherwise they won’t come out to fix it. They just told us to stop using the range if it’s leaking gas and use other means to cook food. They said that if the range broke even one day after the warranty expired they would not fix it because obviously they don’t stand behind their products. This model is not on the recall list even though similar ranges are because of reported gas leakage. Please keep your family safe and don’t buy this range!

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The consumer stated that she was having an issue with the oven portion of the unit since she purchased it. The oven was heating to high temperatures than selected. The food in the oven would get burnt. The range knobs would get extremely hot to the touch.
The consumer contacted Sears in Aug 2015 regarding the issue. Sears sent out a technician that repaired the unit with Electrolux parts. The technician replaced the temperature sensor and a piece on the electrical board. The repair was covered under warranty.
The consumer stated that she noticed recently that the knobs to the range still continue to get too hot when the oven is on. The consumer stated that earlier they thought this issue occurred because of the issue with the oven. They thought that fixing the oven would resolve this issue. However, the issue is still not resolved and the range knobs still continue to get too hot to the touch when the oven is on. She stated that she has to use oven mitts to touch the knobs while the oven is on.
The consumer contacted Electrolux regarding the issue. The consumer was informed to contact Sears. The consumer informed Electrolux that this is a design flaw and it should be inspected by them rather than Sears.
The consumer contacted Sears but they cannot understand or explain why this happens.
The consumer has a 3 year warranty on the unit.

When the oven portion is used; while hot the handle falls off and the stainless steel covering comes apart from the glass and oven door casing. (I have photos) You can not take your food out of the oven or open the oven door or put the parts back together until after the oven door cools off because you will get burned trying to force open the inner door. The glass can burn you if you try to catch it from falling to the floor to prevent it from shattering. Very dangerous incident!!!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Range - 4 burner - with glass doors at the oven. This is a very basic range and oven. It DOES NOT have a self-cleaning function.
On Sat., Aug. 1, 2015, at approximately 1:30 am, I was in the living room of my coop when i heard what sounded like a hail storm in my adjacent kitchen. It was a very hot night and I was preparing to go to bed but this sound was alarming and frightening. After walking over to my kitchen, I saw that the entire front glass part of the oven (Kenmore Gas Range Model#790 725 0901 0 - October, 2011) - purchase ) had just shattered completely and the glass was crumbled and splattered onto my kitchen floor. Black and clear glass and jagged edges were everywhere in my kitchen! I had been home at work for 10 hours that day and the oven was cold and there were no cracks in the glass door prior to explosion. I note that a very similar complaint about “exploding in glass door” was filed with CPSC on June 26, 2015 concerning Kenmore Gas Range (model# 790-7754-3800), purchased in September 2010 one year before my purchase. While the range models are different, the materials and manufacturing of the glass doors is most likely the same or very similar. This was, and is, a very dangerous situation and it is perplexing as to why this happened. This oven does not have a self-cleaning feature and the oven was cold and had not been used that day or for several weeks before. There were also no cracks in the glass door prior to explosion. It is a very basic oven that is not even 4 years old! I am not afraid to even use the stove and burners of this appliance which means i am without a stove and an oven! I have tried calling several numbers for Sears, to no including their “Customer Care Network” a telephone that rings and goes unanswered. When a Sears agent answered a call, they only tried to sell me a warranty on this defective and unsafe oven and were very defensive repeatedly saying that nothing could be done because this appliance is out of warranty. This response by a Sears representatives is very unfortunate and disappointing to me and my family who have been customers of Sears for 45+ years. Perhaps this kind of poor and indifferent customer service has contributed to Sears losing its competitive edge as a national retailer. The CPSC must look into this complaint and any related ones concerning Kenmore Gas Ranges, regardless of the gas range model number, where glass doors that spontaneously explode and shatter. These are most unsafe and dangerous products.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The consumer has two issues with her gas range.
1) The consumer stated that if any one of the 4 burners are lit, the flames go out when the oven door is opened. The consumer stated that the flame will extinguish but the gas stays on. The consumer stated that sometimes when this occurs they do not realize it until they smell gas in the kitchen.
2) The consumer stated that the racks in the oven do not hold up. The consumer stated that over time, either the racks have shrunk or the oven has expanded. The consumer stated that when the racks are placed in the oven, she is able to put things on it. However, she cannot try to pull out the rack with the food on it. If she does that, the rack slips out of the track and falls.
The consumer stated that luckily she had oven mitts on the first time this occurred. She was able to catch the food and not burn herself.
The consumer contacted the manf. They informed her that there were no recalls on her unit. The consumer was informed that her warranty has expired so she would hae to pay $90 to have a technician come out for an inspection.

The Kenmore Elite Gas Cooktop is unsafe because when you use the control to lite the right or left front burner, the flame is so large that it reaches out and burns your hand which is on the control. Also, after cooking with this cooktop, the control knobs are too hot to turn the burner off with a bare hand.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The gas range was installed in mid-January 2015.
This relates to the defective and dangerous gas kitchen ranges by Sears and Electrolux due to self-extinguishing burners. In late June of this year, we discovered that two of the top burners would self-extinguish when the oven door was opened. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION BECAUSE THE GAS WOULD CONTINUE TO FLOW FROM THE BURNERS.
We complained to local store and also to the parent company’s service department. They sent out technicians on several occasions, but could not fix the problem. THE TECHNICIAN ADMITTED THAT THE STOVE WAS A DANGER TO ME AND MY FAMILY IN ITS DEFECTIVE CONDITION. The technician’s manager then decreed that we would have to have the gas company (which happens to be the City of Rockport) come out and check the gas pressure at the stove. I asked the technician why he could not check the gas pressure himself, as that test can be made with a simple and inexpensive tool or meter. He told me that he did not have such a tool, notwithstanding the fact that he had been requesting the tool for a year or so.
The City of Rockport Gas Department was extremely helpful, and had a technician at our house with ten minutes. The City of Rockport technician had a very nice tool that would detect the presence of natural gas, and THE TOOL REVEALED THAT ALL FOUR TOP BURNERS AND THE OVEN BURNER WERE LEAKING GAS ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS. The City of Rockport technician declared on the spot that the stove was dangerous and had to be shut down. That was about a week ago.
The local Sears store now refuses to take back the dangerous stove and reimburse us. The local Sears store told us we would have to call the Parent-Sears service people. The Parent-Sears service people have a system in place for referring us from person to person and then hanging up the phone.
Our stove remains in its defective and highly dangerous condition, and is sitting in the middle of the kitchen, disconnected. We have a beautiful new home, but cannot even cook a meal in it. I wish we had purchased our appliances from [REDACTED] or anyone but Sears.
The submitter added he has learned that the CPSC has ordered the recall of other Sears Kenmore gas ranges made and sold by Electrolux and Sears, due to hazardous, self extinguishing burners...This recall was done under CPSC Recall No. 15-143, and it involved Sears Kenmore Elite model no. 790.42603xxx with serial numbers ranging from AF42500601 through AF43000916 and model no.790.42613xxx with serial numbers ranging from AF42500541 through AF43103647.
The submitter also added he BELIEVES THAT THE GAS STOVES RECALLED UNDER CPSC RECALL NO. 15-143 ARE MECHANICALLY IDENTICAL TO THE GAS STOVE THAT SEARS SOLD TO him...IF TRUE,THEN SEARS AND ELECTROLUX ENGAGED IN UNCONSCIONABLE ACTS BY KNOWINGLY SELLING him a gas range that they knew was extremely hazardous to their health because it had TWO defects: (1.) self-extinguishing burners and (2.) burners that leaked natural gas continuously into their living environment.
The submitter noted he believes that they are extremely lucky that they were not killed by a violent explosion or asphyxiated due to leaking gas. The submitter also noted there was no traumatic injury, but he believes they were poisoned slowly due to the natural gas leakage into their home.

On 07/07/15 the consumer heard the CO2 detector in his home going off and noticed that the detector indicated a level of 90 ppm in the home. The consumer shut the gas range off and contacted the fire department. The fire department arrived about 6 minutes later. The consumer was told by the fire department that the level in the home was between 50-60 ppm. The consumer was told that the CO2 was coming from the gas range. The consumer states the gas range was on for about 20 minutes before the CO2 detector went off.
On 07/09/15 the consumer contacted Sears and informed them of the incident. The consumer was offered a refund but the consumer is not accepting a refund and would like a replacement. The consumer states he is still working with Sears to obtain a replacement.
There are no prior incidents.
The consumer believes the gas range poses a safety hazard and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Gas range
To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to report a major safety event to your agency. About 9 years ago I purchased a Kenmore Gas Range. The model number is 9078582404 and the serial number is VF52709133. This stove had functioned without problems until Monday, June 1, 2015 when I was awakened early in the morning by a “chirping” noise. Thinking it was my smoke detector, got out of bed to investigate. I found that this noise was not the smoke detector, but my gas range. The stove had turned on by itself, and as I watched it, the oven went on and the temperature of the oven increased automatically. I attempted to lower the oven temperature with the controls and also to turn the oven off. All controls were nonresponsive as I attempted to solve this situation. I then pulled the plug on the stove. A few minutes later I plugged the stove in again, but it still did not respond to my actions.
I had been away for 10 days, just returning 3 days before this happened and was very thankful that this did not happen while no one was home in my house. I feel it could have resulted in a house fire and damage or loss of my home.
I have never before experienced such a situation, and am concerned that this product could result in a much greater disaster. I believe that by reporting this, I may save others.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30” Stainless Steel Gas Cooktop
Sears Kenmore Gas Cooktop 30” stainless steel cook top. Four Burners Item # 02232533000. Installed professionally and inspected by city fed by low pressure Natural Gas. While cooking with a large pot the control knob became extremely hot causing minor burns. Knob eventually melted from the heat before I could reduce the temperature. This happen on the so called “Power Burner” with Medium-High Heat.
I would speculate a large part of this is a design flaw. Most cooktops and stoves the controls are slightly below the cooking surface and protected by distance and sturdy heat resistant materials. In the case of the Kenmore cooktop the controls are angled directly up towards the cooking surface and stand less than an inch from the cooking grate. The controls appear to be made of a flimsy light weight plastic. Because of the nature of a smaller 30” cooktop larger pots will naturally extend ever so slightly over the edge of the grates and exacerbate an already subpar safety situation as the plane of heat is directed right onto the controls of the cooktop.

The product, in the report: Gas range - dual oven
I was preheating the top oven of my dual gas oven - the lower oven was already cooking just fine. As the upper oven was preheating I smelled and noticed smoke. When I opened the oven door a huge flame (jumping out from the oven at least 10 to 12 inches and the width of the door) erupted and singed my forehead and eyebrows. After running cold water on my head and face, I shut the oven off and called the manufacturer to file a complaint. They indicated all that they could do was send a service technician to check it out. The technician came and could not find the source of the flame out. I am afraid to use the oven again and will be getting rid of it as soon as possible.

I see a recall has been issued for the “Kenmore Elite Ranges Recalled by Electrolux Due to Laceration Hazard; Sold Exclusively at Sears from May 2014 through April 2015.” However, my gas range also has a laceration hazard and I have felt it while cleaning before. It is located along the horizontal bottom edge of the stainless steel below the range control knobs. I noticed it a long time ago, but had no idea I could submit a safety concern on this website until I saw the recall for the newer model. The one that I have is the KENMORE GAS RANGE, Model #790.77483801. I do not remember when I bought it, but I do know I bought it from Sears.

Regarding - Glass door explosion
On 5/14/15 my less than 4 year old oven was set to 375 degrees and had been on for 30 minutes. No out of the ordinary usage. An explosion was heard in the kitchen and upon entering the kitch it was found that the middle glass panel had exploded and shattered. The inner and outer panels were intact. The oven was turned off at this point. The door was opened to further inspect and the inner panel shattered further which caused glass to fall out of the door and into the broiler and on the kitchen floor. There were no injuries.
On 5/15/15 Sears and Kenmore was contacted; no resolution was offered except to have someone come out to look at the oven and repair it, all of which would have to be paid for by me. They were extremely unhelpful and kept giving different phone numbers to call (10 different numbers, one which was for Whirlpool, not even Kenmore!!!). This is extremely disappointing. All they can say is that there are no recalls so there is nothing they can do. Doesn’t exploding oven doors seem like it should be a manufacturer issue?!?!

Sears Kenmore Dual-Fuel Range (gas stovetop burners/electric range) Model 790.75503207
Cooked food in oven. Turned oven off and 30 minutes later, noticed smoke coming from just under stovetop. Isolated problem to the small button on the oven frame that turns the oven light on and off when the door is opened and closed. That oven light “button” was stuck in a depressed position. When we tried to pry it out into a “non-depressed” position, sparks flew (electrical shock hazard), then the wiring caught on fire. We were abe to blow out the fire and turn off electricity to the stove. Had we not noticed the smoke, the wiring may have continued to burn and cause a fire with significant more damage.
Spoke with Sears the following day. They did not have a recall notice for this problem. They said they could not fix this safety hazard without charge.

Caller stated he started experiencing problems with his gas range. The iron grates on the burners started to become unstable (broken) about 3-4 years after purchase. During this time he would move them around to prevent an accident.
(2009) The retailer was contacted and he was informed of the cost of replacing the burner which was very costly.
Caller feels that these grates for the burners are a safety hazard and should be reported.

No one hurt Made Feb 4, 2015, sent to the company Feb 12, 2015, published by CPSC Mar 2, 2015
The product, in the report: Black Kenmore Gas range (stove and convection) oven with conversion for propane fuel.
We bought a gas range from Sears in October 2013. Last fall (2014,) we began having problems with the range after I used the self-clean feature. It was sooting when we turned the oven on, and shorting out when the temperature went over 375.
On the first repair visit, the Sears man cleaned out a ton of soot and told us the propane conversion had not been done properly.
The propane man said it was all done properly. He cleaned out a ton of soot and said the burner was cracked.
Sears replaced the burner on January 23. Almost immediately we began again having the same problems.
On January 31another Sears repairman took the stove apart. The new burner (one week old) was covered in soot. He called his “technical people” who told him that with this particular model, (Kenmore 79074339310) there is an on-going, known problem where “the manufacturer’s threads on bake and broil gas fitting spuds were not cut deep enough.”
The repairman was working with some kind of tool and to “deepen the spuds”, when the oven exploded, a fireball shot out and his pants caught on fire. At that point, despite the fire, the Sears man’s “technical people” told him to try “one more fix”. I refused, because I was frightened of another explosion. I asked him to shut off the gas and unplug the stove.

The product, in the report: Kenmore model A790.7873 or A790.7876 black and stainless 30” gas range with oven and warming drawer.
The range was not being used or touched when the incident occurred. The oven door handle fell off, the outer door hit the floor and the glass window fell out. This is heavy and would have injured a child.
Upon examination, the door is held together by two bolts thru the door into the plastic handle. The bolt is short and only catches about two threads in the plastic handle. The poor design is at fault.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range Model 790.7231
Our gas oven emitted carbon monoxide enough to set off our carbon monoxide detector to which I contacted 911. The fire dept. came and detected that our house had some levels of cm in it and they in turn called The Black Hills Gas Co. to send someone to see where the leak was coming from. It was determined that the gas oven was the culprit, as when he turned the oven on, the flame was burning orange and emitting a lot of cm. The serviceman came today thinking he could just replace the oven burner unit, but when he removed the bottom liner of the oven, the flame burned blue and showed no signs of cm. However, as soon as he replaced the cover (the bottom liner) of the interior of the oven, the flame went back to orange. He then said he will order a new regulator and thinks this will solve the problem. We purchased this range new on June 6, 2012 and I think the unit deteriorated over time plus the fact that sometimes I open windows when it gets too warm in the kitchen. Regardless, I think this needs to be known to others to be on the safe side. Luckily we had a detector to warn us. I also would like some feedback on this report especially if others have experienced this. As mentioned earlier, it is a Kenmore gas range, model 790.7231.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas oven with burners
I have a Kenmore oven purchased in 2002, model #79075604104. In the early morning on Saturday, November 8, my husband heard 3 loud noises. On further investigation, we found that the inside glass on the oven door had cracked in 3 places. The oven had not been used since Wednesday, and was turned off and cold. We had not had any trouble with the oven in the past. A quick internet search uncovered multiple reports of Sears’ oven glass doors “spontaneously” breaking, many on newer ovens; however, when I contacted Sears, there were no reports of a recall.

The product, in the report: Gas stove/oven, Kenmore, 5 burner, purchased new 2011 Kenmore model #79072902013 serial VFI 4646852
I was not in the kitchen when the incident occurred, but I did hear the sound. Gas range, Kenmore, 2011 purchase. I was in the garage dealing with AAA for a stalled car when I heard a loud sound--couldn’t even tell what it was. When I went inside, I found that the entire glass portion of the oven door was in thousands of pieces--nothing bigger than an inch, most the size of a grain of rice or a small corn kernal. Also lots (lots!) of glass dust, plus shards. The latter 2 had worked down into the tiny cracks between the hardwood floor boards. There was also glass in the bottom of the oven and in the warmer drawer at the bottom. The oven had not been used for at least 48 hours, possibly more. I had bumped my knee into it earlier in the day, but it was just that--a bump. I called Sears, ordered a new door and scheduled an appointment to have it installed. Then, when I thought about it, I decided the glass should not have shattered like that. I’m pretty sure it was tempered. And the internet is full of stories back for several years. Many Kenmore. Many people said they reported it to Sears but were told they didn’t have any complaints and didn’t know anything about it. So I decided to continue with my complaint here. I will next go to Consumer Reports, then on to Bottom Line, [REDACTED], whoever will listen. Somebody could get hurt. Nobody did in this case, although my puppy thought the glass was crushed ice and did try to snag a few pieces. I did save all the pieces.

Last evening my husband and I were sitting in the living room and heard an awful falling shattering sound. We went into the kitchen and the glass in the oven door had exploded. It was still popping and jumping out. The glass was tempered so it was not in shards but it was sharp. We had not used the oven for at least 2 days. There were no cracks, no damage prior to this.
I called Sears and a technician is coming this week with a replacement.
I researched this and found several stories just like ours so we wanted to report this. We purchased model 79071319700 in 2010. It is a Kenmore freestanding gas range. The inside glass remained intact.

While using my stainless steel kenmore gas range Model #790.71513400, Serial# VF44156721 my left shin was lacerated by the corner of the open oven door where two sta inless steel metal edges came together to make the corner of the oven door. These two meeting rough metal edges created a razor sharp edge due to the poor design of the product. I ended up in the emergency room and am still trying to be reimbursed for my life time permanent injury caused by Ken mores defect ive design on the oven door. I was using the appliance as it was intended to be used, with the door open while using the oven.

This is the reply from Sears which I received after reporting that my wife burnt her arm on thanksgiving while putting a turkey into the oven because the oven racks no longer fit the oven causing any weight on them to slip out of channel. Research of the problem stated that others have experienced the same problem, tried to have Sears take some kind of action to prevent others from being at risk however the feedback I was given appeared only to either sell me a warranty or relinquish any responsibility on their part. The oven racks will no longer fit the oven following a self oven clean .

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite 36” gas range, 5 burner, stainless steel, with oven. Purchased 05/10/2010.
The knobs on our Kenmore gas stove do not have enough tension. They at times turn on if you lean against the knobs. When I reach into the cabinet above my stove, many times it turns the gas on. We have been eating and in a few minutes will smell gas and sure enough the knob is turned slightly and gas is escaping. Last night, my husband was serving dessert to a guest. He went into the kitchen, removed the dish from the refrigerator, placed it on the countertop and laid the lid on top of the stove (no burners were on). He served the dessert in our family room and in a couple of minutes we smelled something burning. He went into the kitchen and the lid was melting and on fire.
These knobs need to have a tighter tension or some built-in mechanism to lock them. It is especially dangerous if you have small children. It is a hazard, and incidents have occurred quite a number of times.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
Around November 6th or 7th, 2013 she turned the oven on to 350 degrees to bake spaghetti squash.
The oven had been on for approximately 45 minutes after preheating.
After the 45 minute bake the caller removed the squash and pushed the oven button to “stop” which should turn the oven off, however the oven did not go to off.
She kept pressing the stop button but the oven would not turn off.
She did not notice whether the temperature of the oven was rising or staying set at 350 degrees.
Her husband returned home from work, turned the temperature of the oven down then he was able to press stop and turn the oven off. This happened repeatedly.
The caller contacted the manufacturer the same day but the manufacturer advised her of a very high monetary charge to have them send a technician out because she didn’t obtain the extended warranty.
She was offered a $500 warranty at a charge of $259 which she declined. (for 90 days!)
She then spoke with Sears Corp [REDACTED] who said she would research any information about the range and then a young lady who offered
her a $75 with a rebate of $65 and final charge of $10 for the tech to come look at the range which she declined, because they wouldn’t come for more than a week.
Caller is planning to purchase a new range because it is two weeks before Thanksgiving and she doesn’t want to take chances while expecting 18 dinner guests.
She is reporting because this range is just two years old and unsafe. There are no injuries being reported, thankfully because she hasn’t used the oven
The burners also don’t ignite.

The product, in the report: gas range with oven
Both ovens were in use. The lower oven was set to 375 degrees. The consumer said that she heard the oven’s fan come on and thought it sounded unusual. The upper oven was also set to 375 degrees and it had been on for 5 - 10 minutes. The consumer noticed a strange odor after the food was placed in the upper oven. It resembled a burning electrical odor.
The consumer opened the top oven to see if some food had fallen. A gas ball shot from the oven and nearly hit the consumer. She immediately slammed the oven door. The husband heard a popping sound, but neither he or the consumer knew where the noise came from. Within a minute, smoke began emitting from the vents in the front of the oven. The consumer immediately turned both ovens off, but they could also see flames behind the stove. They used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. The fire was contained in the back panel of the oven and there was no damage to the house.
The fire department was contacted and they responded within 5 – 10 minutes. The firemen inspected the home to ensure that there was no fire still left in the home and there was not. The fireman said that a pocket of fuel had built up in the oven and that is what shot out at the consumer. The fireman confirmed that there was a defect in the oven and they advised the consumer to contact someone about the stove. The electrical panel in the rear of the stove is what ignited.
The consumer also noted that the oven’s controls remained lit even after she turned it off. It wasn’t until she unplugged it that the lights were off.
The consumer also called her propane company and the person she spoke with reiterated what the fire department had said.
The consumer said that her son sustain a few blisters while removing the hot stove from the house, but no medical treatment was needed.

The food was prepared in a [REDACTED] bakeware. The lid was mounted properly. There were no other items in the oven.
However, I am still struggling with clearing the glass from the oven. There are a few particles that are not bulging from the frame.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Gas Range Model 790.7749
My Kenmore Elite gas range is 3 years old. After preheating the oven I lowered the oven door to place a cookie sheet inside and the outside glass on the overnight door exploded. It did not get knocked or used incorrectly. I called Sears Warranty and repairs several times, each time I was quoted a different price for the service call and parts and labor, all they wanted was to sell me their extended service plan. They did not comment or apologize for their product but kept to the script on selling me the service plan. I was told I could purchase the plan from the service repairman when he came, this was not true. No apology for the misinformation when I called back to complain. When I spoke to a condescending supervisor I asked for another so he offered me a $100 gift card to sears...like I would ever shop there again, NEVER!!! There is obviously a product flaw which Sears refuses to acknowledge or correct.
We are still finding glass pieces in the kitchen, my 16 month nephew and my dog have put them in their mouths. Sears should be held accountable!!!!!

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The caller stated that whenever the gas stove is pushed into place, it causes the screws that are located at the rear of the unit to puncture the gas line. This causes gas to leak in the house. The odor of gas permeated her home. This incident started occurring about 1 month ago. The stove was disconnected and the technician was contacted to come out to find the leak.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.
The caller feels that this gas range is a safety hazard and should be reported.
The product is not involved in a recall.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: The design of the stove is such that a small gas supply line, called the T-valve tube, is directly in line with a sheet metal mounting screw on the stove. The sheet metal screw that protrudes out the back of the stove is very pointy and separated by less a ~ in from the T-valve tube. When the stoves slides back in place the pressures on the soft aluminum line and the screw will puncture the supply line. It was difficult to trouble shoot as when there is pressure on the line the screw that created the hole is embedded into the line and the leak is slow and difficult to diagnose. When the stove is pulled out it releases the pressure of the supply line against the screw and the leak becomes greater. I cut the end of the protruding sheet metal screw off so that it is flat now and and thus should never happen again. A small design change suggestion would be to use flat headed machine screws vs. sheet metal screws to avoid this issue.

When using my new Kenmore range, model #79072903010 for the first time a very strong smell of natural gas overwhelmed me. Once we turned on the convection oven, the smell went away. I did some research on some blogs to find that many other customers have had this same problem with this same range, yet no recall has happened. This is a serous danger to consumers. Now I am wondering if this is why this range was marked down 50% in the store and is now discontinued. I noticed there is a recall for a higher end Kenmore range with the same type of problem.

I was taking a dish out of my kenmore stove which I purchased at Sears in Waterbury CT. When I reached into the oven to get the dish, I banged my leg against the oven door. It caused me to have a laceration which required 7stitches to close it. The oven door is surrounded by a very sharp metal edge as is also the bottom drawer of the stove. I contacted Sears by e-mail because when I called, the person on the phone said this had to be addressed by e-mail. The person I chatted with said I could not replace the stove but they would repair it, and tried to sell me a package deal for over 200 dollars. I told him the product was defective and Sears had an obligation to repair or replace this dangerous stove with sharp metal edges. He then offered to help me for 70 something dollars. I said I wanted Sears to pay for all repairs since they sod me a defective product. He said sears would not do this and asked if there was anything else they could do for me!

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range. Model # 7907877306 Serial # VF 53620593
Kenmore gas range, model # 790, 6years old. Door handle fell off and oven door came apart while I was trying to open it. The glass in the middle of the door fell to the bottom of the door. We have had one side of the handle come off and the door come part way open several times over the past few years and have re attached it. This time both sides came off at once. The screws that hold it together seem to be too short/faulty design. I could easily have been burned or the glass could have shattered on me.

The consumer stated that within the first year of purchase of the range, the consumer’s night gown caught on fire while reaching for the microwave above the range. The consumer was able to extinguish the fire. The consumer was not injured.
The consumer stated that she had a gas leak twice from the range in the early AM and was saved from explosion. The whole house was full of gas.
The consumer stated that when she brushes up against the knobs, the knobs turn causing either the gas leak or the fire.
The consumer stated that she washed the knobs back in December 2012. The consumer lost a part to the knob while cleaning. The consumer also stated that the part where you attach the knobs on the range went in. The knobs were in a locked position.
When the consumer contacted the manf, they informed her that the product is out of warranty.
The consumer scheduled an appointment with a technician from the retailer to inspect the product. The technician asked the consumer to replace a broken knob. The consumer stated that she refused to get the knob replaced when they would just replace with another faulty knob. The technician was able to pull out the part that went in (where the knobs attach).
The consumer believes that the knobs make the product a fire hazard. Fire department was called, smelled gas outside of home from same stove

I have a Kenmore elite stand alone oven with gas burners. When we bake or clean the oven, a noxious smoke comes out regardless of how clean the oven is. Upon investigation, the insulation under the bottom of the oven is disintegrating and burning up. It has crumbled into “charcoal” pellets.
When I called Sears (where we purchased), it indicated that my oven was not part of any recall and I would have to pay to have a service repairman look at it.

The consumer says that on February 10th she put the oven thru the self cleaning cycle. she then used the oven on February 13th. She smelled something strange as she was cooking dinner that evening. She went to bed when the carbon monoxide detector went off.
She called 911, when they told her to open a door and go outside. The fire dept and medics arrived. The Fire dept determined the level of carbon monoxide to be extremely high to the point that there house could have caught fire or they could have died. She called the propane gas company the next morning who determined the issue was with the oven and they red tagged the unit.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer who said she did not have the extended warranty or recall. They offered to send out a technician for a fee. she called again and they offered a service smart agreement. She emailed them three times and did not get responses to those emails.

We have had our Kenmore oven for about 1.5 years. We baked some fish in the oven (325 degrees) and ate dinner. As we were finishing the meal, my husband reached out to open the oven door because the cooling fan that goes on automatically when the oven is turned off also blows cold air at us. It was already cold in in the kitchen and my husband wanted to let out any remaining warm air so that the fan would go off. As he pulled on the oven handle, one side of it fell off and the glass on the oven door shattered. There was a loud noise like an explosion and glass went all over the kitchen.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Gas Range Model 790.366603, serial NF72519309 30 inch slide in stainless steel
I have a Kenmore Elite Gas Range model 790366603603 purchased in 2007. I had put a pot in the oven with a roast and vegetables and liquid in to cook. After a some time smoke started pouring out the top of the stove and I opened the oven door to see what happened. There was one rack below it and both racks had fallen off their track and the hot liquid had spilled out all over the oven and burning. Smoke was pouring out the door as well as the front of the oven making it very hard to even get the pot out. None of the racks fit like they should and will not support anything of any weight.
I had checked the manual before cleaning the oven and it states that is ok to leave the racks in while cleaning, which I had done.
I called the Sears 1-800-469-4663 and was told that their had been no other problems like that reported and to call a service repair representative to come and check it out. After talking to them I decide to check on line to see if other problems like this were reported. I have found multiple reports on line of exactly the same thing with the same response from Sears. It seems to me that this is a defective and unsafe product and should be fixed or replaced at no charge. I could have easily been burned. I had to have one of my boys who was visiting to get the racks out because they were wedged in at an angle.

This problem was reported previously in October 2009. Handle to oven door to Kenmore gas range has continuously fallen off since we purchased it. Handle has fallen off when I have hot food in my hand which I have just taken out of the oven. Fearing one day I will get burned or hurt from this. Gas Range is a Kenmore 790.7880. It was purchased March of 2006. We’ve had one service call - that was in September 2008. Have not made any other service calls due to the fact that we will have to pay for each service call since my service contract has expired. Still no injuries, however, I’m fearing my luck is running out, since I’ve had near misses of dropping a hot dish when I go to close the oven door and the handle falls off. Last incident was 01/15/2013, which prompted this complaint.

I continued my baking and this dropping of temperature continued until I finished about 2 hours later. I called Sears and reported this problem and tried to see if this oven was on a recall list, since this is the second time we have had a similar incident. I was told by Sears there is no recall and that I needed to talk with [REDACTED], who they said manufactured the unit. I called the number Sears provided, and [REDACTED] said I needed to go through Sears. All Sears could suggest was sending a technician out to look at the unit, but since the extended warranty had expired, it would cost between $79 to $239 dollars. I decided not to incur any additional cost at the time, so did not schedule any service appointment. Since this range has been questionable, we connected it to a power strip after the first incident in 2011 and turn it off whenever we are going to be gone for any extended period of time. Saturday, December 22 we left in the early morning to visit family and friends and returned about 5:30 p.m. Later that evening we turned the range back on and heated something on the stove top about 9:00 p.m. We were in bed asleep at 10:00 p.m. when we were awaken by the kitchen smoke alarm. The large oven had turned itself on, possibly set to the self cleaning mode, and it was bright orange. we immediately switched off the power, but it seemed like it was still heating, so we turned off the gas to the unit. I had cookie trays and a skillet in the oven, which were darkened and must have started to smoke which caused the alarm to sound. We have not turned on the gas or the electricity to the unit since. I called Sears on Wednesday, December 26, and talked with the Customer Solutions Department, and the most they could offer me was a 10%, up to $100, rebate on a new unit. They did fill out a Product Safety Form, which they indicated was an internal report that would be sent to the Recall Department. We had a similar issue with this range in 2011 when the smaller oven was turning on by itself. A technician came out and within minutes of me explaining the problem knew exactly what the issue was and told me I had to replace the oven control board. The technician was very familiar with the problem and had seen it other times. In May, 2011 we had the control board replaced. At that time I had also made a report to the Consumer Product Safety Commission - Report Number [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] had come to our home to investigate the issue. Presently, the range is still in the kitchen, without electricity or gas. I have researched the internet and have seen where others have experienced the same issue. To date, I have not had any further communication with Sears.
