The product, in the report: GE Adora Gas range. Stainless with top grill
Brand new 2013 GE Adora Gas Range. Knobs are easily turned on. If you barely bump them they spin and allow gas to flow. Contacted GE Customer Support and they said nothing they could or would do. We now have a $1000.00 range sitting in our kitchen with the knobs off for safety.

The product, in the report: RANGE / OVEN
Make: GE Model: JGB281SER5SS Serial: AA237586P We have purchased a new range to replace one that broke down, that has been in the exact same spot in our kitchen for almost 7 years. Within days we kept noticing gas smells, and we figured out they were coming from the new range due to the following cause. ALL 4 of the knobs on this range are easily turntable, meaning there is almost no resistance when trying to turn the knob (where as normally a knob needs to be pushed in, and the turned) and being that it was so easily turntable, a simple walk to a cabinet or counter-top near the range - would turn the knob (or some time more then 1 - or more knobs) ON where as GAS was coming out of the burners un-be-known to the person walking by!! Typically the knobs would only move a bit (say approximately to the 10 o’clock position) causing just gas to come out, but short of engaging the automatic flame starter spark - therefore the action was silent, and went unnoticed for long periods of time, until the GAS smell became apparent, and in most cases, the occupants had no sense of smell of GAS, since the gas gradually entered the atmosphere, and only when someone came in from the OUTSIDE, did they announce the strong smell of GAS in the house. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN IN OUR HOME!! We have attempted several times to resolve this with GE (consumer relations) and they have dispatched numerous technicians to our house - and each technician - although some acknowledged our safety issue, failed to resolve it, as their only ability was to repair an issue with the “functionality” of the range, and being that they perceived the range to function properly (cook / bake food etc) - they told us that this was out of a serviceman’s capability, and left without resolving our huge SAFETY concern!! We have made many calls and voicemails to GE consumer relations personnel, and pleaded for them to replace the unit due to SAFETY concerns - but all they can offer was for us to PURCHASE a new one!!

The product, in the report: GE Self Cleaning Oven Model JGB908 30” wide, 29 3/4” deep, & 47 3/4” max. height to top of control panel.
GE Self Cleaning Oven Model JGB908
The oven igniter has not been functioning properly for the past several weeks. This has been progressively getting worse and now happening each time the oven is in use. When the oven is turned on, it does not light right away. The start is delayed until there is a gas build-up. Then there is a loud boom when it finally ignites. The oven door pops open partially from the pressure of this mini-explosion, endangering anyone in front of the oven. Had my little daughter been standing there when this happened it would have knocked right into her head and who knows what could have happened. This is a dangerous situation that can cause larger explosions with higher gas build-up until ignition. The GE technician that came down in response to my service request stated that this is a common part to go bad and can be repaired by switching it out at the customer’s expense or with a discount that GE may offer. The problem is that GE should recall this defective part on all similar ovens and not endanger their customers by allowing a part that often goes bad to remain in their homes, when there is a strong likelihood that it will eventually cause explosions if not diagnosed and repaired shortly after it begins to go bad. GE needs to use more reliable components in an oven and not endanger their customers with risk of explosions in their kitchens by using parts that deteriorate on their own after only a few years without any misuse on the part of the consumer. GE refuses to record this as a potentially dangerous and hazardous situation and just considers it a common technical issue for their business records.

The product, in the report: Gas range
The caller stated that his spouse accidentally bumped into the control knob of the gas range and then retired to bed. Approximately half hour later he went to the kitchen and heard a hissing noise and discovered that gas was escaping from the gas range. He immediately powered it off. This was the first incident. He had noticed at times before that the knobs were very easy to turn on.
The caller is concerned that had he not caught this on time it could have lead to an explosion.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

The product, in the report: GE gas cook stove
My GE kitchen gas cook stove oven did not shut off when I turned the oven control knob off this morning. In addition it had heated up to an unsafe temp. Smoke was beginning to appear from the back. The oven control was set at 325degrees when was heating up some food then shut it off. Several minutes later I checked it again to make sure I had turned it off before I left for work. The control knob was off but I noticed a yellow glow at the bottom of the oven. I opened the broiler and the gas flame was still on at full. The turned the control knob on and off several times but the gas flame did not go off. I pulled the extremity hot stove away from the wall to unplug it. The entire stove was too hot to touch without protection. I unplugged the stove which stopped the gas flame. I’m sure the stove would have continued to heat up and would have set the wood cabinets and wall on fire destroying my house.

The product, in the report: Freestanding gas range
We purchased a new freestanding gas range, maker GE, Model JGB250DET2BB from Sears in November of 2012. The problem is the gas knobs turns on so easily, that it will come on with very little pressure and leak gas into the kitchen. Someone brushing past the knob can flip it on, leaning over the stove to reach the oven controls will flip it on. There is the danger of setting yourself on fire or an explosion in the kitchen if you are cooking. I was cooking on the left front burner and inadvertently turned on the right front burner. Luckily I smelled the gas before it set me on fire!
After inspecting the stove, it appears the spring tension for the knobs is too light, thereby allowing you to just flip the knob on with your finger tip, or brush it with your coat or other body parts, and not even realize it has occurred. There is a video on you tube demonstrating exactly what occurs. We need this stove either replaced or repaired before we have a sever injury, fire or explosion. Thank you for your time. [redacted]

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The caller stated that he passed by the range and his body brushed against the front burner which caused it to slightly turn on without his knowledge. After a few seconds he started smelling gas and realized that the range was on.
The caller is concerned that this gas range can ignite causing an explosion while the gas is released in the air.
The manufacturer was contacted but he was unable to speak to a live person.
UPDATE: Gas is coming out of the burner at this point. If you do not get to the igniter and lite the burner you will have natural gas. Gas going into your kitchen until it ignites?

The product, in the report: GE Profile Gas Range
Sitting in family room watching TV. Had not been in the kitchen for approx. 4 hours, I believe. At that time my sons came home and smelled gas as soon as they got in the door. They opened windows. Gas could be smelled upstairs as well. I could not smell it.
I have a GE profile gas range. It is about 6 months old. To turn on the range you turn the knobs till they “click” then the ignitor lights the burner.
The problem with this model is the knobs turn too easily. This was the case that night. One knob was not on the off, yet not at the “clicking” stage either. I must have hit this knob when I was cleaning up and never noticed it.
I continue to accidently turn on a burner when I reach into the microwave over the stove and at other times as well.
I now have to check this stove before I go to bed.
The knobs turn way to easily!!

The consumer says that Friday 11/23/2012 she set the oven on self cleaning mode. After two hours, she heard a popping sound. She saw glass all over her kitchen floor. She called the manufacturer who told her not to clean it up.
She spoke to the manufacturer who told her that it is over a year old. She scheduled a service man to come this Wednesday 11-28-2012. She was told that she would get a call back with the end result.
She feels that the government should get involved in this situation and should not allow such a faulty product to be sold.
The consumer says that this is the first time she used the self cleaning mode.

The product, in the report: Gas range
On a number of occasions the valves on our stove GE model JGB400 have been found ajar. On one recent occasion my wife returned home and the smell of gas was so potent that she called the fire department. It appears that the valve can be easily actuated by brushing against it. There is a slight catch in the valve but it is insufficient to prevent unintentional opening of the valve. We notified the company about this some time ago but the repair person took no action. They were willing to replace the valves but the service tech seemed to think that the new valves would be the same. After this I thought we would just be super careful not to brush against them but the valves are just to easily opened.

The product, in the report: Gas Smooth Top Range
GE Glass Top Gas Range is not recalled, however the caller reports that it should be recalled. The range was purchased 2002 but noticed rusting within weeks of receiving product she noticed that there was rust in the burners, door frame etc. She stated she tried to scrub it out but could not get it out, she now must use rubber gloves to clean the suface because in the past she received slivers and splinters of paint into her finger tips which took days to get out her fingertips.
She contacted the manufacturer who sent her parts and cover up but then again the rust began coming through, she contacted the manufacturer again, asking for a representative in her area but there was none. As she has had splinters, and cut her fingers, she asks that this range be recalled and either repaired or replaced at manufacturer expense.

08/19/2012 at 3:30 a.m. the consumer was awaken by a loud noise of glass exploding. The consumer went downstairs to the kitchen and noticed black glass on the floor. There was no glass left in the oven door. The glass on the floor continued to pop and move around. The consumer opened the oven door and saw nothing. She also did not smell gas. 08/20/2012) The consumer called the GE Repair service and was advised to call their Consumer Relations department. The Consumer Relations department scheduled a repair for 09/01/2012. The manufacturer offered to pay half of the cost of the repair plus half of the labor cost. The consumer will have to pay for the service visit. The consumer was advised if the total cost of the repair is more than the cost of a new stove she was to call GE back for further negotiations.

Caller stated that he was cleaning the gas range and while using the chemical it dripped onto the ignition switch which ignited flames. He was able to unplugged the unit immediately to disconnect the power which extinguished the flames. The incident caused the melting of the ignition switch and the knob.
The ignition switch is designed with a failure it has no seals, no protection, so the consumer is at risk at all times for the unit to burst in flames, because of the exposure of the ignition switch.
8/20/12 The manufacturer was contacted and the consumer was told by a Manager that there were no recalls and that General Electric had no previous reports of any issues on this cook top.

My gas range is 4 years old. I broiled pork chops for 20 minutes, turned off the oven and proceeded to feed my family. About 30 minutes later my entire family was sitting at the dinner table and I heard a pop. I looked into the kitchen to find the outer glass door to my oven shattered and in a thousand pieces on my kitchen floor. Nobody was in the kitchen at the time and the oven had been turned off for the last 30 minutes. Luckily, my three children were sitting at the dinner table and nobody was injured.

The product, in the report: GE Model # JGB281SER3SS gas stove, black on top and sides, front is stainless steel, has a viewing window for the oven and the grates cover the entire top of the range over the burners.
I own a GE Model # JGB281SER3SS gas stove. Around September 2011 I noticed that a couple of times the gas was turned on at the burner with no flame and I had not been cooking, I thought it was just a fluke but in February 2012 the whole downstairs of the house smelled like gas. The burner was on and must have been on for a while with no flame. My son was empting the garbage sometime in March and backed up into the stove which turned the gas on but no flame so we have since determined that simply bumping into the stove knobs or brushing against the knobs can turn the burners on but does not stop at the area for it to electronically ignite the flame, so gas escapes into the house. This has happened so often that I am afraid to use this stove. I find this very dangerous, what if someone would bump into the stove right before bed? It could build up enough gas to either asphyxiate us or cause an explosion. I have also experience a strong gas smell every time I turn a burner on or use the oven. I find this highly unacceptable and I want this fixed before it does cause a deadly accident.

The product, in the report: Gas Range/Oven (4 burners)
The consumer stated that the control knobs of the gas range are very easy to turn on without much effort. She stated that it has been turned on by just leaning, passing close by, and children have played around it and it came on.
The consumer is concerned that the range does not ignite but the gas escapes in the air, which is very dangerous and can cause an explosion or CO poisoning.
3/8/12 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that they were not aware of this problem, and she could send out a service rep at cost to her.
The consumer feels that this gas range is a safety hazard and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: GE Built-in Gas Cooktop, Black
On Friday, January 13th, 2:00 AM I was trying to warm 1/2 cup of water in the microwave. The microwave is over the gas cooktop. The cup fell from my hand and 1/2 cup water and the cup fell on the knobs of the gas cook top.
As soon as the water fell on the gas cook top, all the ignitors starting clicking at once. I tried to wipe the water on the knobs but flame developed near one of the gas knob.
Normally such spill would start continuous clicking of the igniter. This time also all ignitors sarted diong clicking. But, this time it resulted in a flame at one of the knob. I extinguished the flame and wiped the spilled water. The clicking of the ignitors stopped. Next morning, the ignitor did not function to start the gas cook top. I called GE for repairs and got appointment for the next Wednesday. However, I cancelled the GE repair appointment as I am not sure this is a safe design by GE. Now, I start the gas cook top using match stick.
Please investigate and let me know your findings. Have you received similar complaints about GE gas cook top from others also? Do you have authority to force GE to investigate this particular incident and improve the safety of the gas cook top. I am concerned that the automatic ignitor may result in fire similar to one described above and cause major damage including death.

The temperature of the unit after approximately 5-10 mins pre-heat would increase significantly on it its own which would burn any content that was placed in it. Caller stated that consumer contacted the manufacturer but no one was sent out, she contacted a local service rep in 11/2011 and he replaced the thermostat.
1/15/12 The gas range was emitting sparks from the rear and she smelled an odor of electrical fire, caller unplugged the unit immediately to prevent a fire.
Caller stated that the manufacturer had not been contacted as yet.

I have a GE free standing Oven and Range. The model number is JGSP28SEK4SS. I placed the oven on a self-cleaning cycle in the Evening before going to bed. I woke up to the front glass shattered. The oven is only 2-3 years old and it should not have done that regardless of the age of the oven. I already called GE and they of course don’t want to stand behind their faulty product. After doing some research on this product it is evident that many consumers have had the same problem.

Hurt, care not known Made Nov 25, 2011, sent to the company Dec 27, 2011, published by CPSC Jan 11, 2012
The product, in the report: Gas Range- black range, electric digital panel on front of the stove, price $516
On 10/19/11, Tri County Community Action Program sent an inspector to do a assessment on my home for the weatherization program. The technician checked my range and other appliances. Stove top burners read on 10/19/11 left rear-47 ppm, right rear 48, left front 49 and right front 30. I asked what the level should be and he said below 25. On Oct 20 All American Appliance sent a repairman, could not check on carbon monoxide, could only replace parts. On Nov 10, the repairman and [REDACTED] met at my home and he ran a test on my stove. He said he would get with the mfrs and Lowes. I went to Lowes to talk to one of the managers. He said I need a vent hood. I talked to another manager [REDACTED]- told him the stove has been tested by 2 technicians, releasing high levels of carbon monoxide. My 2 daughters, age 29 and 43 have migraines and asthma. My 2 granddaughters- ages 14 and 15- have migraines and asthma. 1 granddaughter lives with me and was a premie when born and has asthma. I don’t have asthma or migraines, but have been having headaches and dizzy from time to time.
On Nov 2 I called Assurant Solutions GE made a complaint about the range, she gave me a case no. [REDACTED]. My representative was [REDACTED]. I told her we have been exposed to CO since Oct 19/11.
On Nov 17 Assurant Solutions gave me an appointment for Nov 23 between 8 and 12. Later on Nov 17 I was told by [REDACTED] from Assurant that my extended warranty only covered parts, she let me talk to her supervisor and he told me it only covered parts and they didn’t have a tech for this area. I told him I was already scheduled for an appt for Nov 23 between 8 and 12. He said he wasn’t coming. [REDACTED] asked if I wanted the repairman to come and repair it. I told him I asked the repair service if they could fix the range? The repair servcie said: They could replace the regulator burners and gas lines but couldn’t guarantee this would solve the problem because they can’t test for CO. I asked [REDACTED] why doesn’t GE have qualified technicians to test for CO since they sell products that release carbon monoxide. I was told they do but not in my area. MArshall, TX is isolated.
On Nov 23 [REDACTED] called from Assurance Solutions and asked me if the service tech had come. It was 9:30. I was told to wait until 12. She called back after 12 and confirmed they didn’t have a tech in my area. She told me if I could look in the yellow pages and see if I can find one in a 30 mile radius, she would pay up tp $150 for a charge and file a claim. I told [REDACTED] I shouldn’t have to find a qualified tech- 2 stove had already been tested by 2 qualified technicians and my family had already been exposed for 42 days.
On Nov 23 I called CPSC and left a message.
On Nov 25 [REDACTED] from CPSC told me to call the Fire Dept. They would send out a tech to check the stove. 2 fire man came and checked the stove for CO. No CO reading on burners. 20-30 read on gas range- he said that was high so the readings are going from the burners to the oven.
Nov 29 [REDACTED] asked me if I had found a tech within a 30 mile radius and I told her I called the fire dept. She said they can check for safety, but they don’t know what level it should be on a gas range. She scheduled an appt for Appliance Service Center for Nov 29. He asked me did I have a leak on my stove. I told him the stove had been tested for high levels for CO and asked could he test the stove for CO. The repairman said he didn’t have anything he could use to test.
The stove has been tested by 3 different techs. GE still won’t send a tech out to check for CO. This is 48 days of CO exposure.
Readings include: Nov 10,2011 Right front-4 Right read-38 left front-29 left rear-28 oven-good Marshall Fire Dept, Nov 25: No readings on burners, 20-30 readings on oven, said it was high

The product, in the report: The item in question is a GE gas oven model JGBP99WEH1WW. The serial number is ZF274443P. It’s a gas stove. The ‘WW’ in the model number probably refers to it being white. This issue likely affects other GE products, since they seem to share a common knob design.
The item in question is a GE gas oven, model JGBP99WEH1WW. The serial number is ZF274443P.
If the knobs on the gas oven are bumped or pushed from the right, the gas is often turned on, even if the knobs are not being pressed in. In theory, it should be necessary to depress the knobs to turn them, but this takes very little pressure. Designing the knobs so the igniter is triggered when the gas is turned on would be even smarter.
This has happened when opening cupboards above the stove, bumping into knobs, and even by nudging a knob with a pregnant belly. The problem has been present as long as we’ve had the stove, but we normally remove the knobs to avoid the danger. This has caused our home to fill with gas on one occasion, to the point where we had to leave until it dissipated. This most recent incident was Sunday, when a bag of groceries was bumped into the stove, when the knobs had been left in place.
Interestingly enough, there’s an example of this behavior at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlXiJHxCbQY It’s not my stove, or even the same model, and I am not the woman in the video, but this is not an isolated issue.

The product, in the report: Oven (gas stovetop and oven)
Hello,
I am writing to report a series of dangerous design flaws that I have experienced using GE Oven Model JGB281SER2SS.
Because the oven controls are at the rear of the stove-top burners, it is very easy to burn oneself, especially if wearing slightly loose-fitting sleeves. With an electric stove this would not be a problem, but the higher height of the gas flames creates an unnecessary hazard with the controls’ placement in the rear.
Also, the labeling on the burner controls is confusing. It’s not inaccurate, but because the black line looks very similar on the ‘on’ and ‘off’ sides, it’s easy to accidentally think the burner is off when it’s actually still on. This could be remedied with more distinctive labeling, and it could prevent a dangerous accident.
I hope your staff is able to investigate these issues. With some small adjustments GE could make this very good stove much safer.
Thank you for your time. [REDACTED]
