The glass window on my oven door shattered into thousands of tiny sharp fragments when it was not in use and nobody was near it. This happened hours after routine cooking. There were glass pieces all over my kitchen floor, which could have been very dangerous if anyone was in the kitchen at the time this happened.

The product, in the report: GE 5.0 cu. ft. Slide-In Gas Range with Steam Clean Oven in Stainless Steel Model #JGSS66SELSS
The outer glass door on our GE gas oven shattered, sending pieces of glass all over our kitchen. There hadn’t been any damage to the door previously and we were using the oven according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
My wife and I suffered some small scratches from the glass, me while cleaning and my wife when the glass broke.
We were cooking pasta at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. The glass broke right after taking the pasta out and turning the oven off, not while closing the door.

No one hurt Made Mar 13, 2021, sent to the company Mar 24, 2021, published by CPSC Apr 7, 2021
The product, in the report: GE gas range (propane)
Entering home after being gone we smelled very strong odor. We finally realized it was propane gas from an electronic ignition GE range in the kitchen due to knob not being shut off. The knobs turn easily if bumped even slightly. We frequently check to make sure the knobs are all in the off position, but at some point before leaving the knob must have been brushed against and turned on. Fortunately the house didn’t explode or catch fire.
I wanted to add that one issue with the gas range model in my complaint is that the electronic igniters do not turn on until the knob is turned fully on. I was recently at a friend’s house where his range igniters began to spark immediately when the knob was turned on. In my opinion this is much safer since a knob barely turned on will cause the igniters to spark.

The product, in the report: GE gas range (stovetop and oven) Model JGBS66REK4SS
I bought a new GE gas range, model JGBS66REK4SS. It has a gas stove top and gas oven combo. Home Depot and [REDACTED] sell it. This appliance is a terrible safety hazard with the potential to burn the user or anyone standing in front of the range. Here’s why: The oven has a vent under the control panel. When the oven is on, the heat from the vent channels under the griddle and pours out at the front of the range. This makes standing in front of the stove very hot and makes the stove knobs too warm to touch. The griddle also becomes hot to touch even WITHOUT the griddle burner ignited. This range is a horrible design. The venting heat could harm adults and children standing in front of the stove. The potential for burns is great. Many other folks have complained about this design flaw, I just discovered. I sorted through one-star reviews on Home Depot’s site and found at least a dozen identical complaints. I uploaded screenshots of these to your system. A repairman inspected the range and told me I should get a refund because this model is poorly designed. To my great frustration, the retailer and GE said they won’t provide a refund or exchange of this model. This model is suspiciously similar in design to a [REDACTED] Note on purchase date and my address: I bought this range in February but just started using it in mid-August once my new studio construction was done and I moved in. The product, in the report: Gas range
Caller is reporting that the gas range oven while it was placed in preheat mode started to emit smoke. She stated that when she opened up the door she noticed that there was flames erupting from the bottom. The product, in the report: Gas range and oven combo Model GE JGBS66REK4SS
I have a new GE gas range, model JGBS66REK4SS. It is a gas stove top and gas oven combo. Home Depot and Amazon sell it. This appliance is a terrible safety hazard with the potential to burn the user or anyone standing in front of the range. The oven has a vent under the “backsplash” of range--where the controls are displayed. The vent is where the backsplash meets the perpendicular surface of the range. When you turn on the oven to, say, a standard baking temp of 350 degrees F, the heat from the vent channels under the griddle and pours out at the front of the range. And this appliance can’t be energy efficient with all that heat pouring out of the appliance. A repairman inspected it this week and told me that all gas ovens have vents but I should get a refund because this model is poorly designed. To my great frustration, the retailer and GE said they won’t provide a refund or exchange of this model. This model is suspiciously similar in design to a GE Monogram range that the CPSC recalled in 2009. See this link: https://www.cpsc.gov/es/Recalls/2007/general-electric-recalls-gas-ranges-due-to-fire-hazard. Note: I bought this range in early February, but just installed it in a new kitchen in mid-August. Used the oven only once because of the terrible problem with the heat venting to the front.

The product, in the report: 36” GE cafe cooktop model CGP650SET1SS
I was using GE cooktop model CGP650SET1SS (serial GA709303Q). Upon turning on center burner, it threw a fireball at my face, cinging my throat. I couldn’t event talk right for days after. The cooktop itself was smoking profusely and appeared to be on fire. I unplugged and turned off the gas and the fire fizzled out.
I called GE consumer relations, explained how their product was dangerous and injured me. Even though product is out of warranty, I thought it was reasonable to replace it for free since it was unsafe. And they should be interested in taking the old unit back to figure out why it malfunctioned in a dangerous way.
Instead they insisted on sending out a repair technician. It took over a month for technician to come out. When he did, he wanted to turn on the unit without replacing the center burner that exploded first. I refused to let him, as this is too dangerous to ourselves, the technician, and our home. It would be incredibly stupid to turn on a burner that previously exploded!
GE is now responding by refusing to replace the item or even provide a significant discount.
They seem to not care about consumer safety, the safety of their technicians, or reasonable customer service.
I am reporting this in the hopes of providing more protection to other consumers and hopefully also getting them to take action to rectify this situation in a better and more responsible way.
My reference number for consumer relations is: [REDACTED]
Email I’m communicating to GE with is appliancesupport@geappliances.com
I’ve talked to somebody named [REDACTED].
They still are refusing to replace the dangerous unit or even provide a steep discount to get into a new one. They instead seem to be insisting I let a technician turn the unit on, without first replacing any parts (which again is incredibly dangerous to life and property).

The product, in the report: Black GE/Hotpoint Self Cleaning Gas Range
I brought my GE Hotpoint March 6 2014. I have been happy with it, until today. I set the oven to warm my food up. Then once my food was hot enough to eat. I took it out of the oven closed the oven door, then hit the cancel button to turn oven off. Then I sit at the kitchen table , which is not far from the stove. Began eating my food. When all of a sudden. I heard something fall. I went to check on what it was, only to find that the glass in the door of the stove had shattered. Never in my life have I ever experience such a thing. I’m Thanking God that it didn’t happen when my food was in the oven or that I was in the kitchen to hear the noise.

The product, in the report: White gas oven
We moved into our house in April. Ever since, we noticed that the gas stove that came with the house does not work correctly. There have been times that we turned the burners off but they stayed lit. Several times we’ve turned the oven off, but the pilot light stayed on and the heat would not receed. Once we came down stairs in the morning and the entire first floor was filled with gas because the burners were not on but they were letting off gas all night. Tonight twice we tried to use the stove and the flames in the stove would not go down until we turned it on and off close to a dozen times, and a paper that was in the bottom drawer of the stove completely caught on fire because the pilot light is completely exposed. We desperately want to buy a new stove because it is a huge hazard, but we can’t afford it because we just bought the house. We had no idea that the stove was so dangerous.

My gas range is easily turned on without knowing and gas comes out without igniting. It is a GE range. The knobs are on the front. When they are bumped or leaned on the knob turns and gas is released. Something was placed on top of the stove and must of touched the knob and turned. I left the room and when I returned the room was filled with gas. The knobs turn too easily and release gas without igniting.

The product, in the report: New Gas Range
New Stove leaking Gas. Recently purchased (closed) a newly constructed house, with all new appliances on July 26, 2019. I moved in late August. On Sunday, August 25, 2019 I attempted to use the oven in the new GE stove for the first time. The entire house was filled with Gas. National Grid was called in and their technician determined that the new GE stove was leaking a tremendous amount of gas and was a safety hazard. They disconnected the gas from the stove. GE was called and they scheduled to have their technician come seven (7) days later, even after telling them that we have no other options for cooking. Seven (7) days later (September 4, 2019), the technician came and determined that gas was being leaked from all the burners as well as the oven. GE refuses to exchange the stove, instead, insisting that changing out all the gas valves in a NEW stove will suffice. Even after explicitly telling them that I am not comfortable with having the range with so many safety concerns be in my home with my family. They also insist on me having to wait additional weeks, without the use of a stove, for them to get the parts that they feel will fix the gas leak. This is completely unacceptable.

This is a gas range. Several times now, we have inadvertently turned a gas burner control on by brushing against it. Gas is then released into the room without the igniter functioning. A couple of times we did not notice it until we began smelling gas on the other side of the room. We contacted GE regarding this and their reply was, essentially, that it is functioning as designed and to be careful. This is a GE 30” Free Standing Range. Model JGB35REK3SS. Serial ML223718P. We requested GE to send a service technician out. We explained the concern to him and demonstrated the problem. After looking at the range, even he said that “I’ve never seen anything like this.” “This is dangerous.” “This is bad.” When a report was sent to GE, they completely dismissed our concerns.

The product, in the report: GE gas range oven JGB635DEK2WW
GE gas range oven JGB635DEK2WW..........my reviews on a DANGEROUS GE gas range oven and the store that recommended this product.
Helpful personnel, but they don’t know their dangerous range ovens. They recommended GE over [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. Just had GE service (useless) out on a range oven we bought in October. Here is the review I put at the GE site. Oh, and service guy who googled instead of repairing and read from Google (yes, he read) that the scaldingly hot stove top is a known problem because of the oven vent? I just boiled pasta, and the stovetop (cheap porcelain) got equally scaldingly hot. Nice try, GE. Bottom line, DO NOT BUY A GE GAS RANGE OVEN. “Product is 5 months old. FIVE. I had my previous GE stove for 28 years. TWENTY EIGHT! So, after struggling with cooking in the oven and not having it come out right, AND finding that the stovetop became DANGEROUSLY hot to the touch when the oven was on, we called out GE Service. What a joke. Their answer, and they pointed to paperwork that backed them up because it is obviously a known issue that GE products are inferior? The new oven doesn’t cook like the old oven, iow, it’s made in a third world country and the CUSTOMER has to adjust their cooking time because the stove is inferior. The other problem, where the stovetop gets DANGEROUSLY hot to the touch and if a child touched it they could get burned? The hot air is vented out downwards - obviously a design flaw - when the oven is on and the stove top gets hot in the middle. Um, sorry, nice try but the stove top was getting scaldingly hot where the air wasn’t hitting. Oh and no, again nice try, but my pot size wasn’t the problem when I just used the burners. All in all, GE gas ranges are badly designed and made AND dangerous, and I HIGHLY encourage you NOT TO BUY A GE GAS RANGE.”

The product, in the report: GE Range model JGS750SEFSS - Gas range/ Cooktop/Oven
The glass shattered when using the self cleaning feature of my GE range model JGS750SEFSS for the first time. I followed the instructions in the manual, and started the self clean cycle for 3 hours. About 45 minuets later I heard a pop in the oven and notices that glass had shattered in the oven. I stopped the self cleaning immediately. I am so thankful that I was standing by the oven when it happened, otherwise I fear that my house would have burned down.
I did a little research and found that this issue has been reported all over the country back to at least 2015. This has the potential to be a big product liability case and could cause death and injury. I would hope that someone can put a stop to GE selling these dangerous products. An alternative would be to have them create a repair program to eliminate the danger of exploding glass. Nobody wants and exploding oven!
Also, this happened a few days before Thanksgiving and I will not be able to use my oven at all.
Purchased: September 2016. Oven door shattered on November 2018 the first time we used the self-cleaning feature.

Issue = no ON indicator light for gas burners on this model = fire hazard C2S986SELSS GE 30” Cafe Series Slide-In Front Control Dual-Fuel Range With True European Convection And Wifi Connect- Stainless Steel most gas ranges have an ON indicator light when the gas is turned on. This unit does not. the flame burner has been left on accidently now 3 time in the 5 months we have had this. If you are using a low flame to simmer, it is almost invisible. If the pot is removed and the burner is not turned off, it will likely be missed. Once, the gas flame was left on for several hours and we were lucky it did not cause a fire. The back splash wall was very hot when we discovered this. All gas ranges I have use in the past had an indicator light next to the controls that would alert us the flame was still on and gas was still on. We did not notice this flaw / hazard when we were looking for a replacement slide in oven range. I sent GE an alert and they would not post my comment. A 10 cent neon bulb would have made this and excellent range. My wife and I are very careful when we cook, however, this omission is a real fire hazard. if it happens again, we will likely replace this with a safer brand. For $3k, I expect something safe.

In Sep 2018, I was cooking dinner as usual, by using the tri-ring burner in the center of the cooktop. Suddenly a huge BANG scared me. There was explosion and smoke raised at the control panel knob area. It smelled like burning wire. In case for future explosion and fire damage, I shut down the gas valve, and unplugged the cooktop. Mr.[REDACTED], President and CEO GE Appliances 4000 Buechel Bank Rd Louisville, KY 40225
Dear Mr. [REDACTED]
I am writing to share with you my safety concerns about the appliances that we own, made by GE. As explained in detail below, I am requesting a removal of, and refund for our [REDACTED], and reimbursement for the expenses incurred to make our gas range safe, because of the careless manufacturing at GE. [REDACTED] Of equal safety concern is our GE gas range. This was purchased in 2014. From the first day of use, I could detect an odor of propane in and around the unit. We had the fuel company out several times to investigate the suspected propane leaks (see attached documentation). Ultimately, it was the safety valve on the range causing a seepage of propane. Apparently, this is a common occurrence with GE gas ranges. That is years of propane, albeit a small amount, seeping into the air shared with a newborn and two-year-old. I am not okay with that. As the President of GE Appliances, I suspect you would not be okay with that. Of additional concern are the unsafe knobs on the range. One day after the valve was replaced, I began to smell the odor of propane. By the time I located the source, it was strong enough to cause lightheadedness. Apparently I had gently grazed over the knob, causing it to turn on. This, too, should never happen. Your products are unquestionably unsafe. It cost us $260.66 to replace the safety valve on the range (see attached invoice). A safety valve should do its job to keep propane contained within the lines. Carelessly manufacturing parts to allow for this to happen is a threat to the safety of your consumers. I am requesting a reimbursement in the amount of $260.66 for the expense of the safety valve. I appreciate you looking into this matter and expect that you will take the necessary measures to prevent these dangerous occurrences from happening to other GE consumers. [REDACTED] Please do whatever you can to be certain that your appliances are safe for your consumers, well beyond the limited life of their warranty. I can be reached by mail at [REDACTED]; by telephone at [REDACTED]; or by email at: [REDACTED]. Thank you. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

I purchased a GE gas oven 3/2015. Model#JGB850SEF2SS. Serial#ZD180502P. On 8/13/10 I set my oven to 350 degrees to bake two meatloafs. Placed them in the oven. When I had 20 min left on my microwave timer, I went to the oven to check them. I heard the grease boiling in the oven. I yelled to my husband to get the meatloafs out before a fire started as the oven was incredibly hot to the touch. The oven had a F20 error on the panel. We got the oven booklet out and followed the procedure listed to shut the oven off as it’s temperature kept rising. We couldn’t get the oven to turn off. We called the fire department to our home to help us. When they got here they turned off the breaker outside. They had to use oven mitts to pull the oven out to reach the gas line as the oven was so hot you couldn’t even touch it. They turned off the gas line for us and made sure everything was ok and left. On 8/14/18 I called GE Customer Service. I was assigned case [REDACTED] & a man named [REDACTED]. He told me the error F20 meant “exceeding selected temp.” He said there was no recall on my oven. They are sending Accord Appliance to my home on 8/18/18 to look at the oven. My meatloafs were burnt to a crisp, pans burnt and ruined. My house could have burned down. I don’t want this oven repaired. I am so fearful it will happen again. What can I do?

The product, in the report: gas stove
Information provided to your representative was that on at least two occasions strong gas odors were present in the home emanating from the GE gas range. The first time we noticed this happening was in February 2018 after one of the two adults present in the house must have inadvertently brushed against the front of the stove while in the kitchen. Until we walked back into the kitchen area of the house, we did not know it had happened and that gas was escaping. It happened a second time as well. The regulators operating the gas controls are very sensitive to touch and require only minimal pressure to begin releasing gas. We contacted GE Customer Care to report our concern and a service rep was sent to our home on July 16, 2018. While here, he contacted GE tech support who told him that was how the range was designed to operate (Ignition happens after the gas comes on and the control goes past the low and high settings) so there was no problem. The response was not satisfactory to us nor to our home inspector who felt it could be a dangerous situation. We re-contacted GE Customer Care and they had a second service rep come on July 24, 2018 to examine it. The rep felt that the regulators were very sensitive to touch and that even though that is how the unit was made, it could be dangerous at some point. Again, GE tech support told him that was the design of the unit.

As part of my (new construction) home, the builder provided GE appliances, including our gas range/oven. The gas range/oven is about 7 years old and well past the manufacturer’s (or any other) warranty. Yesterday, when using the oven to cook chicken, my husband pulled the oven door flat (so that the door is at a 90 degree angle) and the outer (exterior) glass of the oven door completely fell out (unprovoked by him) and shattered into many, many tiny pieces. This created a hazard for both himself, and I. When I researched online about the issue, I discovered that it was not as uncommon as I thought and I noticed that this may of concern to the CPSC.
To give context, we use this oven regularly, about 1 to 3 times per week on average. We have only used the self cleaning options for the oven about 4 times total. We only put items from the oven on the cast iron stovetop grates (never put them on the door of the oven), and generally are very gentle with handling the oven. For reference the oven is: _ GE - Model: JGB400DEP2BB - Serial: VS213507P

The product, in the report: GE Profile Gas Range
This is a GE gas range with a gas oven and gas burners. model number PGS920SEF3SS Serial number TF195320P
On two of the five range top burners, when placed to the lowest flame setting, the flame will go out. When the nob is then adjusted back to a medium or high position, raw gas will be flowing from the burner straight into the house. This is a very dangerous situation to have raw gas flowing. We’ve had several situations where the gas “leak” is not noticed for a minute or two, during routine cooking.
Furthermore, to turn off that burner, one must turn the burner past the “ignite” setting, which will potentially spark the gas.
Of note, after setting the oven temperature, the gas oven will not ignite unless you “crack” a stove burner to release some gas from a burner.
There are videos of GE range owners on Youtube with this exact same problem.
thank-you!

The product, in the report: General Electric gas stove slide-in Model: JGS750EEF4ES Serial: ZG197702P
Dear Sirs
I’m writing this letter in hopes that someone from your office would look into a defective product that GE has out on the market place with no recall. I am referring to a less than two year old GE slate gas appliance that I purchased. We hardly use the oven but the other evening my wife called me from the den to look at the oven door. Fortunately for her the glass splattered but did not hurt her in any way. The oven was at 400° and she was baking cornbread she opened the door to check on the cornbread when this happened. I’ve enclosed other testaments of people that own the same GE product please find enclosed.
General Electric consumer relations offered me 25% off on parts and to eliminate the service man’s diagnostic service call. Now I’ve been online and checked the parts and prices they were about a fourth of what GE wanted. I told them that they appear to have a defective part that should be under recall and should be replaced at no charge, and customers who bought this range should be notified of its defect. At first the lady at the other end of line acknowledged that they’ve had others call about this defect my question is why haven’t they done anything about it? This product is a General Electric gas stove slide in model number J GS 750 EE F 4ES serial number ZG197702P. I notified the store from whom I bought the products all four of them and suggested that they notify their customers of this defect so no one gets hurt.
Thank you in advance, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE gas burning range and oven
We were using our brand new GE profile gas range. We were using tree broil feature on “Hi” setting. After about 10 minutes a horrible smell emitted from the oven. It smelled like burning plastic or some type of petroleum product burning. I assumed it was just the “new” burning off, but it became worse and worse. I shut off the oven. My wife opened the doors and windows. She immediately began having respiratory irritation. I developed a headache. We let the smell air out for about 30 minutes, as we were freezing. This morning the smell still lingers and is almost nauseating. After doing some online research, this appears to be a problem with lots of customers. The response from GE is this is normal operation and it just needs to “burn off”. I’m not exposing myself or family to that smell anymore.

The product, in the report: Natural gas stove with 5 burners and oven/broiler I purchased it from Home Depot on 7/1/2016. It was delivered on 7/7/2016
On November 12, 2017 I awoke to the smell of natural gas coming from my kitchen. I immediately contacted my natural gas provider NICOR who arrived at my house about 40 minutes later. The tech noted there was a gas leak from the broiler tube and also at the base of the stove where the gas line enters the stove. Turned the gas off to the stove and freshened the air inside my home. I contacted a local appliance store “Paulson” and scheduled a repair person to come out and let me know what was wrong. The stove was 15 months old and out of warranty. On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, I was told that both the broiler tube and regulator were leaking and would have to be replaced. Since the stove was 15 months old, it was out of warranty and the cost would be $450-$500 + the $105 service call. The product, in the report: 7 year old ge self cleaning gas range
I set my ge self cleaning gas range to clean cycle which is a 4 hour 20minutes. After about 70 minutes I smelled burning which I assumed was food dropping# burning but then I saw flames in the oven coming from the gas burners under the floor of oven but all contained in oven. Since last times I used this cycle no smells or flames I am concerned that the smells seem to include wiring smell. No smoke & smoke detector not going off and cycle is now within an hour of completion.
I won’t know till it finishes if the range is damaged as if I shut it down now I’m afraid the fire will return and while contained in self cleaning cycle lock I don’t want to let and air in by closing cycle.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe gas cooktop 36 inch. Model - CGP650SETSS
In using GE Cafe Series 36 inch cooktop, the knobs to control turn on and off the gas have broken several different times. The range is only 2 years old and 4 knobs have already broken. Before it breaks totally off the knob becomes loose and may not turn off the gas even though the knob has been turned to the off position. In some cases the knob completely breaks off in your hand preventing you from turning off the gas range. I have had two incidents where the faulty knobs resulted inadvertently leaving the range on and burning up a pan and a pot. This was a GE range model CGP650SETSS.

i recently purchased a GE gas, convection range from Home Depot, model #JGB720SEJSS Andora, after having the range for a few days,we were using the oven and broiler, for a lengthy amount of time,we realized there is a heat shied installed in the back of the cooktop area, which i think protects the digital componants, like the timer and controls in the back of the gas range above the cooktop area, this heat shield gets extremely hot,and without know how hot it really can get,i myself got burned several time, while using the stove.I think this is extremely unsafe for children and the elderly using the stove.Outside of the actual burners there should be no place on that cooktop that should get that hot,to burn someone,i contacted Home Depot about the situation and they blew me off and said to contact GE,i called several time and never got a reply from them.I really think this is a very dangerous situation, and i felt i should report it.

(04/19/2017) The submitter was outside of his home for a few minutes and when he walked inside he noticed a strong gas odor. He then realized that one of the control knobs were slightly turned and the burner was emitting gas. The submitter believes one of his kids accidently bumped the control knob and caused it to slightly turn on. The submitter said he had to open all of the windows to ventilate the home.
The submitter indicated that there have been 10-12 similar incidents and one of these incidents the fire department was contacted. The submitter said the burner is never ignited but the gas emits and fills the home.
The submitter believes the knobs are very sensitive and they turn on easily when touched. The submitter believes the range has a poor design and poses a safety hazard.
(04/21/2017) The submitter contacted the firm and advised them of his safety concerns. The submitter was informed about a gas lock out kit but they told him it’s not available for his range. The submitter said they were not willing to assist him further or provide a solution to this safety defect.

The product, in the report: 4 burner gas stove - propane
3 month old GE Stove JGBS60REKSS has dangerous burner knobs. Merely brushing against the knobs can turn burners on releasing gas.Usually, I’ve smelled it and turned it off. It has happened often enough that I routinely check the knobs before leaving the house.
The other morning I was cooking a pan of eggs on the back burner and had a deli package of cheese by the front burner. I must have brushed the front knob, but was busy & distracted and didn’t notice the gas smell. The flame from the back burner must have ignited the front. There was a sudden sound and burst of flames. I was right there, didn’t get burnt and it was okay.
I worry that the same thing could happen when I’m not at the stove, possibly when something is cooking for a long time on the simmer burner.
I feel that GE should replace the knobs with others that require some effort to turn on.

One time, I knocked it while cleaning the stove top (not the knobs), and another...I’m not sure how, but it was terrifying to come into my home an hour later and find the entire upstairs smelling of natural gas.
Other gas stoves I have had in the past are not so easy to turn the knobs on to let the gas out. To light my current stove you have to turn the knob all the way to the left, whereas other stoves light when the knob is *barely* turned to the left.
I’m just really worried that it’s way too easy to accidentally leak gas. :o/

The product, in the report: Convection Oven (gas)
This consumer is reporting that he ordered a gas convection oven in April/May 2016 from appliance store in Chicago, Illinois that was delivered August 12, 2016. He had no problems the first for months from delivery/installation until December 21, 2016 when the glass blew out of the door. On December 21, 2016 the caller turned the oven on to 350 for preheat then heard a noise like a muted explosion then narrowed it to the convection oven where he view that the entire glass portion of the door had exploded inside the oven. He turned the oven off and has not used it since that time. He is reporting this incident as a hazard since the glass could become imbedded in food or if he attempted to clean the glass up he could be cut on the broken glass. There are no injuries being reported The caller contacted the place of purchase and they contacted the manufacturer and he is waiting to receive his return call to be advised whether there is an offer to replace/repair the door at manufacturer expense.

The consumer woke up from his dog barking and when he opened his bedroom door he noticed smoke. The consumer walked in the kitchen and noticed flames. The consumer states that one of the burners were on and a cutting board with a slice of pizza was on top of it. The consumer then put out the fire.
The consumer believes that his dog was trying to get the slice of pizza and turned the control knob, subsequently turning on the fire. The consumer believes the design of the control knob is not safe and the firm should fix this defect.
The consumer believes the control knobs should be pressed down then turned for the fire to start and his knobs turn on with a slight movement.
There are no prior incidents.

I was preparing to bake a pizza so set the large oven to heat at 400 degrees by pushing the oven button and turning the dial to 400 degrees. About 5 minutes into the preheat, I heard a very loud banging noise. I turned to see that there were bright sparks flashing inside. Then, a foul odor came from the oven. I immediately ran to turn off the oven. After doing so, sparks and banging continued for another 2 seconds. The interior of the oven is covered in a white ash and is still emitting a bad odor.
If i wasn’t near by it could have caused a fire in the home.

The product, in the report: GE 36” Built-in Gas Cooktop
My GE 36” Built-in Gas Cooktop produced an explosion and a 6” fire flame erupted from underneath a Control Knob. Model No. JGP970BEKIBB. Serial No. GH717664Q. Purchased April 2, 2005.
This safety Hazard in the Cooktop appears to be caused by a possible design flaw that can cause an electrical arc between the wiring and gas supply tube creating this fire hazard. When this explosion/fire happened the circuit breaker tripped at the basement electrical panel.
If there was any item near this explosion/flame a major fire could have developed and possibly burning my house down.
My wife was cooking on the range yesterday and turned off the RF burner and was walking away when the explosion happened. The flame came from the RR control knob and the burner which was just turned off was the RF burner.

The product, in the report: GE 30 Inch Gas XL 44 Self-Clean Range w/Sealed Burners / Quickset 11 Controls. This product is used for cooking and baking in my kitchen. Range was bought new at Sears in 2003, just found out when looking for date that it was probably manufactured in 1998 in Mexico.
XL44 gas Range Series # DF22199P Model # JGBP28TED2WW. When lighting the burner, the igniter is on the bottom of the dial, furthest away from the off position, through all of the flame settings. Several times people have leaned on the stove, on the knob, and have turned the knob, not knowing the gas has turned on. Since the dial was turned, but not close to the igniter, gas was being released without the clicking sound. Yesterday It happened again ... I was down in the garage and could smell the gas and rushed up to turn it off and open all the windows. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS!! II Was there a recall for this that I missed? I have friends who have similar models but the igniter comes on first as soon as the knob is turned. Thanks for any answers I can get before my house blows up! [REDACTED]

The consumer states that the knobs are improperly placed. About 6 months ago the consumer states that he noticed a gas odor in his home and when he checked the range he noticed one of the knobs were slight turned. The consumer states that no one turned the knob to the on position but he believes it may have been rubbed against and the gas ignited. The consumer indicated that other tenants in the complex have similar appliances and his neighbor had a similar incident. The consumer believes the ranges pose a safety hazard and should be recalled.
The building had to be evacuated so Fire Dept could clear the gas
The consumer states the range came with the condominium and he moved in about 3 years ago. The consumer believes the range is about 8 years old.
Sometime in 2015 the firm inspected the range and adjusted the temperature to the oven. The consumer states the oven was 5 degrees off.
The consumer contacted the firm and expressed his safety concerns and the consumer was informed about getting child proof knobs. The consumer believes the firm should take responsibility for their defective product.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe Gas Cooktop
We bought a GE Cafe Gas Cooktop in May 2015 and had an issue within a month; the unit was replaced by the store we purchased from. A few months later, we started to see some weird things happening to the Cooktop and one day my wife was about to get burn and hurt from high flames and big explosion from one of the burner causing the burner top to fly and hit and damaged the hood and the back splash and half the burner areas to turn black. We contacted GE and a technician was dispatched to look at. The tech looked at it and order some parts and advised me to contact GE Customer Service since it has safety issues. I contacted GE Customer Service and they told me to speak with the GE Safety Department due to the nature of the issue. And, that is where I started to get a run around. The service call ticket was closed and they refused to take any actions. I posted my comments on GE’s Facebook and they were all removed by GE.

I own a GE self-cleaning gas range model RGB790CEK8CC. It was purchased in 2008. On more than one occasion, the knob for the top burner got slightly depressed and turned. As a result, gas was spewing from the burner into the kitchen. This could have been a very serious situation. It appears as though the knob/valve does not need to be depressed very far before the knob will rotate to the on position. Since this is a non-pilot light range, if the knob is not in a position to activate the igniter, unburned gas emanates from the burner creating a potential explosive situation. I suggest you investigate this.

The oven came on by itself and heated without any limit. Smoke alerted me to the situation. There was no indication of the oven being on. The display panel showed only the time. I pressed “Cancel/Off” and nothing happened. The display panel was functioning. I pressed “Bake” and the panel showed the normal start up indications. At no time did a temperature appear in the display as would normally be the case. The cabinet fan was NOT on during this time. Thus the oven was silent and I initially did not realize it was on until I was actually in front of the stove and felt the heat. I was able to shut the range down by shutting off the gas line outside. It seemed to me that if not found, the oven would have continued to over-heat and would have eventually ignited the surrounding cabinets. An ozone smell continued from the unit until it cooled enough for me to disconnect it from the electric power. A clean clay pot used for cooking was in the oven at the time. It was totally burned. Thus I would assume the temperature in the oven significantly exceeded the clean cycle temperature.

The product, in the report: GE slide in gas range Model JGS750DEF1BB, Serial # SA 103630P
To whom it may concern;
This is to inform you of a serious event we had with our GE slide in gas range, Model JGS750DEF1.B B, serial number SA 103630P, installed in January of 2014. Event- POWER BURNER USE GETS COUNTERTOP VERY HOT.
On December 12th, 2015, we were making applesauce to “can”. We centered our 13 inch canning pan on the left front “power” burner. We needed to boil the water in order to can the applesauce. It was the first time we used the “power” setting on the burner.
Upon checking to see if the water was boiling, one of us put our hand on the adjacent (left side) counter top. It was very hot. We then noticed a smell like plastic (laminate?). We turned off the left front burner and moved the canning pan to the right front burner. We then got wet rags and put them on the laminate and edge of the stove to cool them off. The left side of the stove and the countertop were too hot to touch. Water from the rags sizzled and steamed. We removed the drawer from the adjacent base cabinet and discovered the top inch of wood adjacent to the stove top was very hot to touch.
We will no longer use the power burner. We did not have a fire and the laminate does not look damaged. If we had not noticed that the wood and laminate counter top were getting very hot, we believe we might have had a fire in the kitchen.

Caller stated while the oven self cleaning was in process for approximately an hour he smelled a burning odor, he cancelled the operation and when he tried to open the door there was extreme heat dispersing from the oven so he had to restrain from opening the door. Later, after the oven had cooled down he reached for the door handle and it broke. Caller stated that he had noticed that the handle had become deformed after using it several months from the heat of the oven.
(8/2015) The manufacturer was contacted and a service technician was sent out for inspection, he was advised that the information she retrieved would be sent out to the company. He was also advised that if there should be any repairs it would be at his expense since the oven is over a year old.
Caller feels that this oven is a fire hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Ge stove top model number C2S980SEM1SS and serial number FR2047039
My GE stove top gas burner model number C2S980SEM1SS and serial number FR2047039 has defective knobs that turn the gas on and off. The knobs are made of plastic and the interior of each knob is cracked. Further, when you try to turn the stove off the knobs just spin in circles making it impossible to fully turn the gas off. This becomes problematic and extremely dangerous given the stove has a self igniting spark. Once you have noticed your kitchen smells like gas if you turn the defective knob you’re either going to turn the gas up higher or ignite your house up in flames. My house almost blew up and my face was hit with a giant flame as I tried frantically to turn the gas to the stove off. I contacted GE and they sent a repair man to my house. He told me that GE has known about this problem going on four years now. They no longer use plastic knobs in the newer models. I believe there should be a mandatory recall for any consumer using the defective plastic knobs on the older models before someone gets seriously injured or dies. After talking to GE my self and voicing my concern over this major safety issue It is my belief they will only do a recall unless forced. I have saved my old knobs if they need to be used as evidence or if you would like to send an independent technician out to verify the defective product in use with my stove. GE is replacing my knobs free of charge. My concern now is for every other consumer out there using the old knobs. Someone should not have to get seriously injured or die in order for GE to do the right thing.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Gas Oven Model# JGMP33CEH1CC Serial# SF245131P
On November 29, 2014, my daughter slipped on the kitchen floor and her knee hit the oven door. Upon impact it shattered into pieces, all over her, the dishwasher, and the kitchen. The oven is a GE Profile Gas Oven. The model number JGBP33CEH1CC and the serial number is SF245131P.
I called GE and then sent out a technician. He said that this is very common and that it’s the consumer’s fault because she slipped and bumped into the oven.
Because the class cut her upper leg and knee into tiny slices, GE referred me to their insurance claim department.
GE is standing by the claim that this is a common occurrence. My question, is it really?

The product, in the report: GE Stove Model: JGBS60DEFBB, Serial No:VD123164 The stove is black and has a design problem that keeps the gas knob stuck in the “in position.”
I have a GE stove Model: JGBS60DEFBB, Serial No:VD123164. The stove was delivered to my home on Dec. 3, 2014. The stove has a defect that allows the gas to be turned on without first pushing in the knob. The knob does not retract due to an interference fit with the bezel. Twice, within the first three days of delivery, the knob was bumped and the house smelled of gas until we caught that the gas was turned on part way, evidently due to being bumped, Then I looked into the problem and discovered the interference fit that was causing the problem. A GE repair person arrived Dec. 15, agreed with me, and ordered a new manifold and a new bezel. The new manifold and bezel arrived Dec. 19 and they are identical to those on my stove, so the replacement was not completed. Stove display units in our local Home Depot have the same problem and the department manager agrees that there is a problem with the design or manufacture of the stove. The manager called GE and talked to somebody who said that there is no design problem. Frankly, I believe that this stove has a design error such that the manifold is mounted well below the bezel hole center line. This can (and in my case does) cause binding of the control knob so that the knob spring cannot eject the knob into the lock position. Twice, within the 3 days after purchase, we bumped the knob (that was stuck in the “in position”) and later returned to discover serious gas odors in the kitchen. After finding the problem source, I taped the knob and I have been trying to address the problem through GE and Home Depot, but there is no indication that the problem is being addressed. Needless to say, we are glad that we discovered this before we had an explosion. I have used the channels suggested to me with no satisfaction and I will not stop until I have an acceptable solution. In other words, I will not accept a stove that has marginal clearance of the rear burner knobs. The front burners, by the way, are fine because their bezel openings are, for some reason, 10 mm larger than the rear burner openings. So, even though the center lines are not centered, there is no interference fit. After repeated calls to GE, all I hear is that GE engineering is working on this. Meanwhile, I need to keep the burner control knob from accidentally turning on and filling my house with gas. I want to prevent explosions both in my home and in the homes of others who bought this appliance. Thank you, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Gas Range Knobs
Caller’s daughter purchased a GE range approximately 18 months ago.
They are having problems with the knobs on her gas range which turn on very easily.
The caller is reporting that if a person just rubs past or is reaching over the range the knobs turn at times and begin releasing gas but do not ignite.
He said that this has happened a few times and that just recently the dog walker came into the home and smelled gas then turn it off.
There are no known injuries at this time
The caller contacted the manufacturer on December 4th, 2014 and he was advised that a service technician would be sent to the home December 9th, 2014.
The caller will update this report with the technician’s statements before he returns it.
1. At 1:30 on Dec 9th G.E. Technician ([REDACTED] stopped by the caller’s daughter’s residence, the caller explained to him the problem. He operated several of the knobs on the range. He said without hesitation that there was nothing he could do about it, that it was a problem with the design of the knobs.
The caller asked if there was anyone else the callers could talk to in order to resolve the problem?
He said he would let someone know and punched some info into his computer. As he was leaving at 1:37 the caller requested that someone call her on the following day with a way to rectify this safety issue. He said he would let someone know. (No reply from G.E. on following day)
2. At 1:45 on Dec 9th the caller called [REDACTED] at Customer Service (800-386-1215 ext. #[REDACTED]) to let him know that the Technician had been here and what he had said. (Voice message (He would call her back in 24 to 48 hours
3. At 1:19 on Dec 10th [REDACTED] called the caller back and said there was nothing that he could do but offer the callers a new range at our expense and they would pickup the old one and probably scrap it or he could send another Tech. for a second opinion. The caller told him none of the options would solve this issue since the caller was aware of at least 5 other consumers with the same identical problem
As a final note he said the caller could go on line to see if anything could be done (GECHSconsumers@GE.com
4. Dec. 12th 12:23 Called GE Corporate HQTRS. in Fairfield Connecticut #203-373-2211. Message prompter sent caller back to Consumer Complaint Dept. (which she had already been to!)
Dec. 12th 12:30 Called G.E. Corporate Offices. Left message that she had an issue of safety about one of their ranges and needed to talk to someone who could help.
Dec. 12th 5:05 PM. Operator called back with number for CEO in charge of appliances.
Dec 13th 12:40 Called CEO [REDACTED] [REDACTED] He said he had checked the report from the technician and confirmed what the Tech. said. The caller asked him if he knew of any other complaints about this issue. He said that he had heard of people accidently turning on the gas while reaching over the range to access a microwave or cabinet above range. So the caller asked if he knew he was acknowledging that there was a problem with the range. He said no that he had only heard of such issues . The caller asked if there was some other dept. or person in engineering or product safety that she could talk to about this. He said there was nothing more he could do.
The caller was thoroughly amazed and disgusted with the cavalier additude with which he approached this problem, so she informed him that she would take another approach but that this issue was too serious to just let it go!!
P.S. Enclosed: At least 5 other consumers with the identical issue.
Thank you! [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE Cafe gas range
In 2010 I purchased a GE gas Cafe range $2500. A few months later it has a gas leak. The control valve was replaced. Service man left, used the range, another gad leak right away. Seems the bad part was replaced with another bad part. Weeks pass each time service is needed, part has to be ordered then another service date scheduled to put the part in. We had the same part replaced three times. In August of 2014 another gas leak in the range. This time we did not want this range any longer. GE agreed to replace it but we had to pay $1,000 for the new one. We agreed only because we felt better to pay the money than die from gas poisoning. We has the range installed by a gas certified tech. The first time I used the oven you could smell the gas pouring out of the oven again. My service tech advised me that he has seen this problem with many models of GE gas ranges. Waiting for repairs again.

Caller purchased her gas range when she purchased her home around May or June 2005 but did not receive it until 2006 when she moved into the home. She had problems with the oven from the very first used the heat escalated to temperatures much higher than what she had set them at. She bakes her cookies at 350 degrees but with this range, each time that she bakes the oven temperatures escalate from the set temperature upward to 400 and 500 degrees and her cookies become burned. She is reporting theses incidents as severe fire hazards. She is asking that GE help her and replace her range at manufacturer expense or at least repair it with a lasting repair at manufacturer expense.
There have been no injuries

The product, in the report: GE gas range, white, 30”. Digital display in center is simple, no pre-heat indicator, just clock and timer. Approximate date of manufacture is 2001. Ignite is last position on knobs, which open to release gas if lightly pushed or leaned against resulting in unintentional gas release.
Knobs turn too easily if brushed against and gas starts being released. Ignite is at the end of the dial meaning all positions prior to that just start releasing gas unignited. Very scary. All the origianl ranges installed by the builder of our townhomes are of this unsafe variety.

The product, in the report: GE Self-Cleaning Gas Range Convection Stove Model # JGB810DET2CC Serial # MZ214221P
GE Gas Range Model # JGB810DET2CC and Serial # MZ214221P During the last week of June 2013 I woke up to a clicking sound. The sound was the clicking before the gas comes on the surface burner. I walked to the kitchen and the center burner was on and the center knob was turned enough to start the burner. I had to turn the knob off. A&E Factory service was called since the stove was under warranty. Two technicians came to the house on July 5, 2013 and checked the surface burners and said the stove can’t turn itself on. Their note was “Tested system. No problems found. Working to OEM spec”. One month later on August 6, 2013 I woke up to the smell of natural gas. The whole house was filled with the odor of the gas and the center knob was on enough to turn the burner on but no flames. I had to turn the knob off. I had to open all doors and windows to air out the house. I left the doors open and asked me mom to stop by later and close everything. She called Cascade Natural Gas since I had a gas leak. This was documented. The gas odor could be smelled outside by the Cascade Gas representative sent to investigate the leak. I called GE Consumer representative and received case # [REDACTED]. GE representative [REDACTED] made an appointment with A&E Service Factory. On August 8, 2013 the A&E technician came to investigate the situation. The technician decided to order the center surface burner valve. Aug 19, 2013 was the appointment to replace the valve. The center surface burner valve was replaced. December 16, 2013 I came home at 4:30 pm and the small precision simmer burner was on. Again there was a clicking sound with the burner on. The knob was turned enough to start the burner. I had several cookie sheets on this part of the stove. The bottom cookie sheet had about 2-3 inch diameter discoloration from the heat. The burner acted like the first burner so I thought I had a month before the burner would turn on and only natural gas would be released. December 17, 2013 I called GE customer service and received case # [REDACTED], from case manager [REDACTED]. An appointment with A&E service was made for 12/24/2013. Around 3:15 pm on December 17, 2013 my parents called me at work from my house and stated the small precision burner knob was on enough to allow the natural gas to leak. Luckily they caught it in time before the house was filled with gas. I have 2 pets that stay in the house while I am at work. I asked them to check on the house not knowing the burner would act this way so soon. I expected in a month this would happen since it appears to have a similar valve failure. December 17, 2013 I called my case manager [REDACTED] to ask to expedite my case because of the gas leak. He could not change the appointment date. I used the stove while I was home but had to turn off the gas every time I left the house. December 24, 2013 an A&E technician came to the house and stated he was going to replace 4 surface burner valves since I had a problem with the precision simmer burner. GE was going to pay for all of the valves to be replaced. The next appointment to replace the valves was on January 7, 2014. On January 7, 2014: an A&E technician came and replaced four surface burner valves. I did not trust the gas range so when I left the house nothing was on the range and a window next to the range was open to allow air circulation. I was afraid a valve would fail and I wanted to make sure the window was open for my pets. When I was home I did not have the window open. After I finished cooking I thought I could smell gas but wasn’t sure where it came from. January 18, 2014 my mom was at my house and I asked her if she could smell gas around the burners. She suggested I call Cascade Natural Gas to check out the range. January 19, 2014 I called Cascade Natural Gas and told them I had a gas leak around the range. The person on the phone told me to turn off the stove. A Cascade Natural Gas representative came to the house and I told him about the issue. He asked me to turn the gas on. He used a gas detector device around the burners. As the natural gas was filling the lines he was moving the detector over the burners. The precession burner, which had the initial problem, and the front left burner were indicating leaks with a loud beeping sound. He repeated this pattern for several minutes and the beeping sound increased and he told me I have two leaks. He red tagged my range and told me not to use it. I needed to contact the service people. January 20, 2014 I called GE and customer service was on a holiday. I called Nilsen’s appliance store and informed them of the surface burner valves leaking. [REDACTED] told me to call GE customer service line. January 21, 2014 I called GE customer service and stated the new problem of two valves leaking natural gas when the knobs are off. I wanted a refund because I have an unsafe range in my house. I emphasized this is a safety and life issue. I also told the person Cascade Natural Gas technician had tagged my range to where I can’t use it because of the two leaks. I referenced my case # [REDACTED] and the person told me that my case manager [REDACTED] wanted to discuss the issue with me and he will call me on January 24, 2014. January 23, 2014 I called GE customer service and spoke with [REDACTED] and referenced my case # [REDACTED]. I wanted a refund and the stove removed. I told her all about the issues with the surface burner valves failing and the gas leaks. She told me it is GE’s policy to only replace or repair but not to give a refund. I had to call Nilsen’s, the store where I purchased the range from. She did set up an appointment to have a technician come out and verify the leaks since Cascade Natural Gas technician did not work for GE. The A&E technician will come out and check for the leaks. Then they are supposed to talk with a GE engineer to see how to resolve this problem. The appointment is set for January 28, 2014 in the afternoon. This is unsatisfactory. This is a health and safety condition that should be urgently fixed before there is an accident that results in a death or fire. This could be the reason that on the GE website, this model is no long being manufactured. As of January 26, 2014 Nilsen’s owner has not provided any help to resolve this problem.

The product, in the report: GE Gas range
I woke to the smell of gas about one half hour after my husband left for work. I immediately went down stairs to the kitchen to find the gas burner on the stove on high without a flame. My husband was in cabinets and must of bumped the front knob, turning the gas on. I immediately turned the gas off, opened all the windows and door in the house.
Fortunate for us, I had the day off from work. Typically I leave for work before my husband (6a) and we do not return until 8p on most days. This could have been catastrophic as you can well imagine. Our children are all in college and not home but we do have multiple pets that would have perished with the house and it’s content.

The product, in the report: GE 30” Free-Standing Gas Range White Model #: JGBS18DETWW
I was making dinner. I had the oven preheated to 350 degrees. I set my dish in the oven when it reached 350 degrees. Within 5 minutes I heard an explosion and saw glass all over the floor. My 2 year old son and husband were in the kitchen and I was standing right next to the oven. I was barefoot at the time and my husband had to pick me up and carry me from the room to prevent me from stepping on the hot glass.
My concern with this situation is as follows: 1. My son was in the kitchen and his height is eye level with the top of the oven door. 2. I was standing very close to the door when it exploded and could have had hot glass landing on my bare skin. 3. I have had the product for less than 2 years and use the oven about once a week. I feel that the damage was due to a manufacture defect, rather than by any misuse. Yet GE fails to see that this is a safety and quality issue.

The product, in the report: GE Range, model #JGBP33CEL2CC, serial # SL241160P, white, freestanding, gas range with electronic burner igniters and burner bar in oven. Possibly manufactured in 2003.
We have a GE gas range (model #JGBP33CEL2CC, serial #SL241160P). Several times, the oven has started to heat up spontaneously. The display does not show that the oven is heating, and the oven seems to get very, very hot. The only way to stop it that we have found is to unplug the unit. My husband researched the problem and discovered at an online forum that this is a known problem with other GE ranges from a few years ago. The online search revealed that it is probably a problem with the electronic controls.
There does not seem to be a recall listed on the GE website. This seems to be a potential fire hazard, if it had happened when we were not home or at night.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
GE Gas Range purchased around December 22nd, 2011 . Sometime around the end of July 2013 the callers’ wife had been baking for approximately 20 to 30 minutes when she heard a loud bang. She went toward the sound from the kitchen and saw that glass was on her kitchen floor, on the pots and pans in the drawer below. The middle glass of the three glass window in the oven door had shattered although neither the inside glass or the outside glass shattered or broke.
She immediately turned the range off and called her husband to ask if he would remove the spare-ribs from the oven and dispose of them because although there was no glass inside the oven she wasn’t positive that none came inside.
There have been no injuries
Caller and his wife contacted the manufacturer around August 1st, 2013, filed a report with [REDACTED] and received case# [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] advised that the manufacturer would send the callers’ a check for over $100 until the caller informed her that they had already paid for repair in the amount of $247.00. Once she knew that the caller had already paid for repair she sent them a check for $60.
Caller believes that the manufacturer should at the very least reimburse them half the cost of repair.
Caller is reporting this product as unsafe and believes that either of the other glasses in the oven door could have also exploded and someone could have been seriously injured.
