The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold Induction Range
My wife was cooking with our 1 yr old Whirlpool induction range when she heard 2 loud “pops” and all the power to the range went out. According to the appliance repairman the induction module board shorted out and began to burn. Fortunately the house circuit breaker tripped and averted a potential electrical fire. This product contains defective electronics which are a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool double electric oven, model WOD51ECOASO1 Wall Oven
Whirlpool Electric Double oven purchased November 2013. The first time we used the self cleaning cycle the glass in the door shattered after about 45 minutes into a 3 hour cycle. It was the inner glass, but it sprayed glass out the bottom into the room. The oven was not particularly dirty and there was little spilled on the floor of the chamber. The glass in the door only had whatever food vapors had settled on it.
I guess the glass was defective or installed improperly and perhaps stressed from the heat.
I contacted Whirlpool but they did not seem concerned.

The product, in the report: Electric Oven
Caller stated that she placed the oven on auto-clean and noticed that after it finished cleaning, she noticed that the contents above the cabinet melted. She stated that control panel had stopped working and there was an error code. (11/23/14) She contacted the manufacturer and she was informed that it might be the control panel or thermostat failure. 11/2014 The repair department was contacted at Sears and a technician came out around 2 weeks later and advised that the control panel had a failure and would need to order parts at a cost to her. She was also advised that the parts would not arrive until sometime in January 2015.
The caller did not have an oven that worked to 58 days, including Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years.
1/2015 The control panel was replaced but that did not resolve the problem, the thermo fuse was tested which proved to fail. 1/16/15 The thermo fuse was replaced which resolved the issue. However, this incident cost her $431.13 that she feels the manufacturer should be held responsible for this oven malfunctioning. She was advised by the technician not to use the clean feature for the oven again with concern that this incident will re-occur at cost to the caller.
Caller feels that this oven is a fire hazard and should be recalled.
Lawsuits have been filed in New York for the same problem the caller had. Multiple complaints online with the same issue.

The product, in the report: Electric free-standing stove element
Whirlpool electric range in home when built in 2010/2011.
The caller had no problems with the range unit until July 2014 when he began noticing that the large heating element located at the right front of the range. When it is set at low to simmer or cook slowly it will not remain at the set temperature, it keeps rising and remaining as hot as it can become. The element can be turned off and has been turned off but not disconnected. This incident has happened numerous times since the first incident July 2014. The caller contacted the manufacturer January 7th, 2014, reported the incidents to them using their case# [REDACTED]. The manufacturer supervisor is [REDACTED] who advised the caller that he would try to assist him, but that he would most likely still pay 75% - 90% of the charge because this incident in his mind did not appear to be a safety hazard and his unit is no longer on warranty.
There are no injuries to report at this time.
Submitter added one thing he was told by Whirlpool is if it [element or range] caught on fire to pull the stove out and unplug it..

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Self Cleaning Electric Range with accubake and accusimmer features. Model RF 378LXPB 2
I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner when I heard a cracking and popping noise from my Whirlpool Electric Range, model RF378LXPB 2. There was nothing on the stove top area but all of a sudden a piece of the first range the size of a 50 cent piece popped out and went to the burner behind it shattering it. The glass top them split from the left back burner all the way over to the front right burner. I am afraid to utilize it anymore for fear that there may be glass pieces that end up in food. The oven was at 350 and I had already turned it off and taken the meat out of the oven and had it sitting on a butcher block on the counter top. There is no reason this should have happened. What if I had been standing there when the glass popped up and I had been cut.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool® 4.8 cu. ft. Capacity Electric Range with AccuBake® Temperature Management System
A surface unit switch (part # 3148954) for a large coil element overheated the element on a slightly less than medium control setting causing the element to become red hot. When the switch was inspected for damage, there was a considerable amount of black soot-like material on and inside the switch as well as on the control panel surface behind the control knob. Although to a slightly lesser degree, inspection of the other large coil element surface unit switch revealed similar black soot-like material on and inside the switch.
Replacement surface unit switch parts (part # 3149400) were ordered and installed for the large coil elements. Damaged parts available for inspection if necessary.
This incident occurred on a Whirlpool Electric Freestanding Range.
The product was being used by my spouse at the time of the incident.
The product was being used at the time of the incident to cook food products on a slightly less than medium setting.
No harm or injury occurred at the time of the incident. Significant harm or risk could have occurred at the time of the incident such as injury, death or property damage, if the range had not been attended at the time of the incident. It is not uncommon for some forms of cooking to be left temporarily unattended, on a low to medium setting, to allow certain food products to simmer or slow cook.
Potential risk - Upon further inspection, one of the small coil element surface unit switches revealed black soot-like material on and inside the switch, although to a lesser degree than the large coil element surface unit switches referenced above.

No one hurt Made Oct 30, 2014, sent to the company Nov 13, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 1, 2014
The product, in the report: 4 burner freestanding electric range
I have a Whirlpool Range, Model RF364PXPQ1, purchased new in [REDACTED].
I recently discovered that the “HOT SURFACE INDICATOR” light, located in the cooktop surface, was no longer working. I removed the cooktop surface for further inspection, and found that the indicator lamp assembly, bearing part number 8523740 (which, according to two local appliance parts suppliers, has been discontinued by Whirlpool and there is no other replacement available) was partially melted. I unplugged the connector where this lamp plugged in at the back of the stove and checked for voltage. There was no voltage with the burners off. After turning on one of the burners, the circuit became energized at 120 volts. The circuit remained energized until the cooktop surface cooled down and power was shut off to the circuit. The lamp is a small neon indicator bulb which is enclosed in a plastic housing. This style of lamp draws very little current. It looks like the lamp gradually melted due to heat being trapped below the cooktop surface. I am concerned with two potential hazards here. First, there is no longer any warning that the surface is hot, which could lead to a burn if somebody accidentally touched it, or a fire if something accidentally was left on the surface. Second, because the melting distorted the plastic housing, this resulted in a bad internal connection in the lamp housing. As the plastic distorts, the bare contacts of the lamp could potentially contact one another and cause a short circuit when the circuit is energized. It is important to note that this circuit remains energized at 120 volts for several minutes after the surface has been turned off.

I was baking squash in the oven at 350 degrees, and my daughter leaned on the oven door for a minute, and both layers of the glass shattered. Thankfully, it did not explode out onto her legs! I don’t know if her leaning on it for that short minute was the reason it exploded, but I don’t really suspect it was, especially after researching this on the internet.

The product, in the report: whirpool stove - glass top model # RF265LXTQ Serial # RU4113839
I had damages caused by a stove explosion in my home. The explosion caused injury to my foot (3rd degree burn requiring a visit to the hospital),my kitchen (including a newly laid kitchen floor) and destroyed the stove. Fire fighters informed that the explosion appears to have been related to an electrical problem inside the stove because it takes 2500 degrees to melt stainless steel of which it melted from bottom of my cooking pot, there were pieces of stainless steel flying all over the kitchen area of which many of them landed on my floor. I reported this incident directly to whirlpool for further investigation the very next day. Someone needs to take charge and investigate this matter to prevent from happening to anyone. Its unsafe and could cause someone’s home to burn down or even worst cause death.I was left without a stove, are having to eat outside of home and spending more than I would have to for not being able to cook at home since 9/18/14 I would like a resolution from whirpool for the repair of the damages and replace the stove. The product, in the report: Built-in electric microwave/wall oven combination. Black
I bought a new Whirlpool built-in electric microwave oven combination wall oven two weeks ago. The model is WOC54EC7AB01 and the serial# is D43020052. When I turned the lower oven on 450 to cook a potato, the whole unit became very hot. The bottom of the microwave was hot to touch without being used. The metal strip on the side of the oven where it is screwed into the wooden frame was so hot that it would burn your hand. Even the buttons on the controls at the top of the unit were hot. When I called Whirlpool, they said they could send a repair person out or I could call the people who sold it to me. They didn’t seem to be concerned that it could have burned down my house. I certainly wasn’t going to allow a repair on a two week old unit. I went back to the store and they are replacing the unit. I have been told Whirlpool makes a very good product but I’m not sure. I will give the new unit a try but if it gets hot outside of the oven, I’ll just get my money back. I thought some one should know about this problem. If there have been others reported, then it’s a bigger problem than just one oven not built correctly.

The product is a double over from Whirlpool, model #1BD650PXS00, s/n D22949575, sold through IKEA.
After a year’s use, the product overheated during a self-clean cycle and set off the smoke detector just past midnight and would not shut off. Two service calls have not repaired the product, as both motherboards and transformers melted. The service rep informed us that IKEA is aware of the problem and continues to sell the product.

The product, in the report: 4 burner Electric Smoothtop Range
On April 24th, 2014 the caller and his wife were baking bread. The oven had just completed the preheat stage, the caller placed bread in the oven to bake. Approximately four minutes later the caller smelled smoke, both he and his wife were still in the kitchen so knew very quickly that it was coming from the electric range. He check the oven but found that the broiler had also come on and was causing burning and smoking. He hit the cancel button, unplugged the range and pulled it away from the wall. There are no injuries being reported
The caller contacted the manufacturer Monday, April 28th, 2014 but stated that they gave no assistance.
The caller adds on the consent form: I might add that I plugged in the range after approx 1/2 hour and started the preheat cycle to check the bake cycle. The broiler came on and did not go off causing the oven to get very hot. It stopped an after the preheat cycle ended. Four days later we checked it again and the oven worked correctly and we were able to complete a loaf of bread without incident. However we could not trust this to be reliable for unsupervised baking. We have replaced the range.

THE INSTALLER TOLD MY HUSBAND TO SET THE OVEN AT 350 ABOUT 20 MINUTES TO ALLOW THE “NEW SMELL” TO BURN OFF BEFORE PUTTING ANY FOOD IN THERE. HE WAITED FOR 30 MINUTES. THEN HE INCREASED THE TEMP TO 375 AND PUT A FROZEN DINNER IN THE OVEN. ABOUT 25 MINUTES LATER WE HEARD A LOUD “POP”. HE RAN INTO THE KITCHEN AND SAW THAT THE GLASS ON THE INSIDE OF THE OVEN DOOR HAD EXPLODED ALL OVER THE OVEN AND THE DINNER! WHEN WE SLOWLY OPENED THE DOOR, “NUGGETS” OF GLASS FELL EVERYWHERE AND EVEN INTO THE GAP BETWEEN THE DOOR AND THE RANGE.

The inner oven glass window of the Whirlpool 30” free-standing oven range ( Model# : WFC150MLAW ) shattered during normal use. Owner was cooking dinner at about 6pm on Thursday, Feb. 13th, and preheated the oven to 425 degrees. While he was preparing the food to put in the oven, he heard a loud bang and crash. He turned from the counter and could see that the interior tempered glass had shattered. He opened the oven to assess the danger, saw several bits and pieces in the oven and closed it again. When he opened the oven, many pieces fell to floor, which he cleaned up after allowing them to cool. The Owner was extremely lucky that there was not injury to anyone. The exploding of the inner glass of the overn is a customer safety issue. The oven range was purchased from Lowes and was only 1 month old. It is under warranty. However despite multiple calles to Lowes they repeated told me that Whirlpool consider this a cosmetic issue and the owner would need to replace the oven glass or door at their expense. It is extremely concerning that both Lowes and Whirlpool do not consider this a customer safety issue and consides this to be a cosmetic issue.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold Electric Range (GFE461LVS) - bought on 8-12-2009
We have a Whirlpool Gold Electric Range (GFE461LVS) we purchased on 8-12-09. On June 16th, 2013 and December 14, 2013 the oven malfunctioned. In particular, the oven while in use jumped from bake 375 degrees to broil at 550+. On both occasions the contents that were cooking caught fire, and the oven would not turn off. Smoke was billowing out of the oven, our smoke alarms went off and we had to throw water into the oven to stop the fire. Since the oven would not turn off, we had to flip the circuit breaker to stop the oven from maintaining the broil temperature. Both times that this has happened, we were cooking different items. The second incident required us to use a fire extinguisher and to contemplate calling the fire department. I have researched this issue online and there are others with the same issue with the Whirlpool Gold ranges. The oven both times, was just a few minutes from catching the house on fire. This is an extreme incident that cannot be ignored. We will be having to replace this range since we do not trust the oven not to catch fire again. We will not be getting it serviced since when I did my research those who are having the same issue, no servicing helps and they have to buy a new range.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Electric Glass Cook Top 30” Range White
In July, 2012 my husband and I purchased a Whirlpool 30” Electric Glass Cook Top Range with Steam Clean. We purchased it new and received a one year warranty.
Within two months of purchase, the plastic gliders for the storage drawer cracked and broke--thereby rendering the drawer useless as far as ease of access was concerned.
In December of 2012, I noticed a drip on the glass window. I figured I would clean it when I cleaned the oven. Low and behold, it would not clean. It took me a few months (2-3) to realize the seal on the glass window of the oven had a leak. The drip was on the inside. This is a serious problem.
In September of 2013 (when the range was out of warranty) I had a problem with the glass cooktop. I had a saucepan of rice simmering on the back right burner. I was sitting in the living room. I was hearing a very light crackling sound and presumed it was the wind and trees outside.
We had dinner. The next day, I attempted to clean the stove top. There was a spot on the burner where I placed the rice which I could not remove. Over a period of a week or two, I would give it a little cooktop cleanser and rub--to no avail.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered under a strong light the spot was not a spot. Rather it was an area where small bits of glass popped off all over the top of the range--and possibly in our food. You can see the spot and feel the gouge in the surface of the glass.
I was absolutely appalled. I have been cooking for over 40 years. I’ve used gas and electric without any problem. I previously had a glass gas cooktop in my former home. Glass has never been a problem until Whirlpool.
These specks of flying glass could blind someone. They are dangerous and justify a recall.
I clearly remember the problem several years ago with the exploding glass [REDACTED] Cook Ware.
This problem was not of my doing. Neither was the seal break in the window. I do not abuse my appliances. I take very good care of them and only replace them when necessary--never just because some new innovation has arrived on the market.
When I was seven years old, a boy on the playground was throwing rocks at me. One hit me square in the right eye and bloodied it. My mother had me at the doctor first thing the next morning. The doctor told my mother I would have to be hospitalized for at least a week.
For seven days I laid flat on my back in St. Margaret’s Hospital, Minneapolis MN. The doctor ordered both of my eyes to be completely covered to prevent straining my left eye. He informed my parents directly the injury had a little better than 50% chance of blinding me for life.
For seven days I laid in darkness and was spoon fed. I recovered. However, the doctor warned my parents any more injury to this eye would result in the loss of sight--permanently.
I am sure you see my concern. I would fear a young child being blinded by popping and flying glass.
Whirlpool is unconcerned. Both contacts with them only resulted in the solution of calling for repair service.
A glass cook top should not snap, crackle and pop all over my kitchen after 15 months of use.
Whirlpool is very ambivalent about this problem. To replace the cook top would cost me approximately $300. I’d bet money, marbles or chalk the same problem would recur.
Whirlpool needs to Man/Woman Up on this one.

I put a take and bake pizza in the oven tonight after preheating the oven to 425 degrees. I actually placed it in the oven a couple mins. before the preheat cycle was complete. I set the timer for the pizza to 15 mins. At 8 mins. I heard a noise similar to silverware hitting the floor. I did not notice anything on the floor upon investigation. A minute later, I heard a loud cracking noise and noted the oven glass door on the inside of the oven had cracked visibly. I opened the door and a large glass shard fell into the space between the inner and outer glass doors. I turned the oven off and transferred the pizza to the lower oven (it’s a double oven). I was scared.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 6.2 cu. ft. Electric Range with Self-Cleaning Convection Oven in Stainless Steel
I purchased whirlpool 6.2ct electric range (Model WFE540H0AS) on 3/16/2013 from Lowes, Fremont, CA. I tried to bake my cake on 11/19/2013, and pre-heat it to 400F degree. When the temperature achieved to 400 degree, I put my cake in not even 5 minutes and go to dining room to pick up something. When I turn around, I saw the oven window is so bright and I open the door right away, it has fire from the left side bottom. I turn off the power right away but still has big fire. So I use the fire extinguisher to get the fire off.
I went to Lowes to complain it, this product still under the manufacture warranty and I also purchased two years extended warranty from the store. Lowes sent the 3rd party technician come over to check, they open the bottom element and insist I drop something to caught on fire. He tried 350F degree is working and tell me oven is ok. But the fact is, there’s nothing drop, no oil, water or and any ingredients, only fire extinguisher powder all over the bottom. Technician put back the cover, I asked him, how do I clean up the bottom extinguisher mess, he said you don’t need to, just clean the top and won’t try 400F degree for me since the top didn’t clean up. I asked him, I am so fear to use it now, you asked me to clean it up and try again. If he insisted the bottom has something caught the fire, then now has extinguisher powder there, too. I only use my oven to bake cakes, cookies, and muffins, and that day the cake even not still raise yet. How could it caught on fire? Is this product defective? And have a big safety issue since nothing actually drop in the bottom.
I also called Whirlpool, they said most likely is short circuit, they only provide the repair, unless it can’t be repaired, then they will replace it. Manufacture also told me that my temperature is too high. I don’t think so. I have no problem to use any oven with 425-450F degree in the pass. If this is high, why the stove has function to that high degree? I am so upset with both of service. For my concern, nothing dropped to bottom and caught on fire. They all refused to replace the new one and asked me to continued use it. I really don’t feel confident to use this one and don’t know who can help me to let the manufacture replace it. I think this is defective product and have a big safety issue.

Our Whirlpool wall oven, model RBS 305PRS00, serial XT2015302, locked itself and started a clean cycle during a bake cycle at 350°. My wife smelled smoke caused by the extreme heat. She called me and we finally got the oven to open. We started the bake cycle again and the oven locked and started the clean cycle twice more, so know we didn’t touch clean. We have never used the clean mode! I contacted Whirlpool and asked them to fix this very dangerous problem. Their reply stated that if the oven was out of warranty, I would be responsible for the repair. An on-line search shows that this is not an uncommon problem and Whirlpool should be required to do a recall on it.

Whirlpool Oven/Range oven door outer glass shattered.
The oven door outer glass shattered for no apparent reason overnight. We have not used the oven for at least a week or two and woke up to find a hole on the glass panel and shattered glass on the floor in front of it. The unit is over 8 years old and it’s never happened before, and the oven door has not been hit by anything or anyone to have caused it to shatter into pieces that way. We called Whirlpool to explain the situation and try to get the replacement glass and they said that the model has been discontinued for several years so they cannot replace it (not even the entire door unit).

The product, in the report: Super Capacity 465 (4.65 Cubic Foot Oven) Self-Cleaning Electric Range
I set my oven (Whirlpool Model RF385PXE) to cook at 350F as usual, placed a casserole dish with chicken in the oven, and set the timer for one hour. A short time later I heard a click sound in the kitchen so I went to investigate. The oven had the letters “CLN” and “locked” which is the self clean cycle. I hit cancel and the message changed to “COOL”. However, there was a red glow coming from the oven which was the “broil element” and it was red hot. I waited a couple minutes thinking the element would cool off, but it was still red hot. I had to turn the oven off with the circuit breaker. I then let the oven cool for a while. Our oven has an electric lock so I had to turn the circuit breaker back on to allow the oven to unlock. Thinking that maybe I had inadvertently hit “auto clean”, I thought I would try turning the oven back on. Again, I set my oven to cook at 350F. A short time later I heard a click and once again the oven had the letters “CLN” and the “broil element” was red hot. I again cancelled the oven, but the “broil element” stayed red hot. So I turned off the oven with the circuit breaker again. After the oven had cooled down, I turned the circuit breaker back on. Without touching anything on the oven, the “broil element” came back on red hot again! So it appears as though there is something faulty with the top “broil element”. According to the manual, the broil temp is automatically set at 500F! It is scary to think that this oven would go into broil mode or self clean mode with food locked inside and no way to cancel it short of turning off power to the oven!

The product, in the report: Cooktop electric range model RF364PXPQ1
Electrical fire of Whirlpool range model RF364PXPQ1. The cause was the power cord to stove terminal block. An aluminum strap is used to connect the power cord to stove wiring. This strap overheats and causes the plastic block to melt and the wiring catches fire. Research has found that when copper wire is connected to alumimum excess heat is generated at the connection point. This connection is used in almost all electric ranges. Have experienced similiar copper/aluminum overheating in a home in the mid 1970’s where aluminum wiring was used.

The product, in the report: Ceramic smoothtop electric cooktop 30” wide
Consumer was wiping the off the counter and noticed spots on the edge of the ceramic countertop. Damp paper towels would not remove the spots. Turned to re-wet the paper towels and saw from the corner of her eye, flames coming out of the knob! All of the burners were flaming. She ran downstairs and tripped the circuit breaker to shut off power supply to the range. When she returned upstairs there were no more flames, just black smoke.
The consumer then called the Fire Department and was directed to 911 and within a couple of minutes they were there. The Fire Department made sure the circuit breaker was powered off and began to unplug the cords to the range. The Fire Department then removed the range because it was too hot to keep in the house. The consumer’s son now has the range in his shed. So some information may not be available. Son took cooktop apart. It was completely burnt inside! He trashed it in dumpster
She got a ruler and measured were the flames were and she stated they were about 8-9 inches tall.
There are no damages to report.

The product, in the report: Electric Wall Oven
Caller purchased her single oven, 27” wall oven May 2011, Model#,and hasn’t had any problems with it until today.
Friday, February 15th, 2013 around 11:00AM caller turned on her self cleaning function on her less than two year old Kitchenaid electric wall oven and sat down to read.
After approximately one and a half hours she heard what sounded like a huge bang with what sounded like glass hitting something.
She went immediately toward the sound to discover what it was causing the sound. She saw that the inside glass of the oven door had exploded.
The outside glass in door did not explode however when the inside glass door exploded it sprayed out three to four feet into the kitchen area and continued to shoot glass out of the bottom as the glass cooled off.
She is asking for inspection and recall of this wall oven and for assistance to obtain repair at manufacturer expense or replacement of the range.
She has not contacted the manufacturer but her husband contacted the store where range was purchased and they are contacting the manufacturer.
UPDATE: Husband later called mfr who agreed to replace glass panels on oven door at mfr’s expense because they had information that the glass panels had problems.

After cooking dinner in my Whirlpool range I turned it off. Later we heard a bang from the range. Upon investigation I observed that the door had locked, the range was displaying the error code, “E2 F3,” the unit was hot and the broiler element was on. The broiler element was red hot. I tried to turn off the unit but pressing the off button on the key pad did nothing. The only way to shut down the oven was to unplug it.
Although no one was injured an no property damage occurred, if I did not catch this, it is possible that the oven would have continued to overheat, possibly causing a fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool electric range, black, model number WFE364LVB0, serial number R02811263
I purchased a Whirlpool electric range in mid 2011. On Thursday, January 24, 2013 my husband was making dinner. The oven was on broil and he turned on the burner. When he turned on the burner it did not come on. He opened the oven and it was not hot after being on broil for at least 10 minutes. He turned the range off and pulled it out. After he removed the cover on the back we could see that the plug as well as the red wire on the stove were completely burnt. This was obviously a problem with the stove since the cord and outlet were completely fine with no back on either of them. When contacting Whirlpool regarding our concern our simple reply was “sorry, it’s been over a year and is out of warranty”. Our concern is that, while yes it’s been about 18 months since we purchased it, this appliance could have caused a fire. The model of this appliance is WFE364LVB0 and the serial number is R02811263. I also have photos of the back of the stove where it has burned if needed.

The Cooktop On and Hot Surface On indicators on our GGE388LXS02 stove are severely inadequate to convey the dangers associated with the cooktops hot surface.
I burned the fingertips of my left hand today because the Cooktop On and Hot Surface indicators did not call the condition of the cooktop to my attention. When I was retrieving the coffee pot that sits next to the stove, I placed my hand on the cooktop which immediately burned my hand. The cooktop was used in the morning, and it was apparently left on the low setting. I had been on for approximately five hours. My husband and I had traversed by the stove throughout this time and neither one of us noticed it was on.
These indicators on our previous whirlpool range were significantly larger and brighter than the indicators on this GGE388LXS02 stove. I believe the indicators on our current stove should be just as bright. After this incident, I thoroughly inspected the indicators and found that both indicators tend to wash out when viewed at an angle which contributed to us not noticing the cooktop was left on.

The product, in the report: In Wall Oven electric
Caller is contacting the CPSC Hotline on behalf of her daughter who was cooking November 21st, 2012 (the day before Thanksgiving) with the oven set at 350 degrees. Caller’s daughter had baked bread at 350 degrees so oven was preheated, she took the bread out and placed one slice of microwave bacon on a piece of foil in a pan in the oven for a few seconds, however when she shut the oven door she noticed that the mode went from bake to broil and door to oven locked.
She tried pushing cancel, tried to open the door multiple times but could see that the control panel was displaying “ERR” for error. Within a couple of minutes of trying to open the oven door or turn the oven off a fire flashed in the oven with flames engulfing the entire oven forming a ball shaped fire. She dialed 911 and seven fire engines responded but during the short period of time that the fire began and the fire department arrived the fire had extinguished itself. Fire responders had to allow the oven to cool down, they brought in a huge commercial fan and some sort of tubing as precautionary measure check for fire in the walls, due to the high level of heat caused by the oven fire.
Neighbors contacted the manufacturer but state that the rep was no assistance at all.
The oven remains inside caller’s daughter’s home with power not attached.
She tried to use the oven November 27th, 2012 in the evening, heated to 400 degrees with mode set to bake, she placed her food on the sheet plate, shut the door and turned around to prepare other food. She turned around and saw that the oven was again glowing very brightly, the broil and the bake modes were on but the door had not locked yet. She ran outside to turn breaker to oven back off and it remains off to this date.
Caller is asking on behalf of her daughter that this model be recalled with replacement offered at manufacturer’s expense.

Earlier in the year, one of my cooktop elements quit working, and the hot warning indicator light did not work on turning off any of the other elements. I took it apart to replace the element and found that the element was not the problem - the wires connecting the electrical equipment were too short, the assembly worker had to bend the terminals so that they were almost touching to assemble the parts. The wires were so tightly held together at another location that the constant pressure and heat caused the insulation to melt and an electrical arc resulted. I have a ppt file with pictures showing this condition

On July 14th, 2012 Caller’s daughter was visiting and was preparing to baking a meat loaf when the broiler came on automatically. Estimated time meat loaf was in oven is about 30 minutes during which time the daughter had left the kitchen and then walked back in to find heavy smoke.
PF code appeared in control panel.
She went to get her mother who shut off all buttons however, the broiler wouldn’t turn off. They then shut the breaker off.
She contacted a service company that she had used for repairs previously and who explained that it isn’t worth repairing and that this code could affect two parts.
Caller states that she is lucky it didn’t burn her house down.
Caller has not contacted manufacturer but does intend to contact retailer.
Caller would not purchase another of this manufacturer’s product again.
She would like to ask the company whether they quality test their products.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Electric Range
This morning I was making pancakes on my Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Range. While using the front left burner set at # 5 (medium) within 20 seconds it began to glow red got so hot the pan itself was smoking. I immediately turned off the burner. I decided to test to make sure it wasnt a fluke so I let the burner cool completely down and turned it back on to 5. the same thing happened. To further verify that there is something wrong, I turned it off, cooled down and turned on ALL burners to #5 (which is medium heat) and ALL burners began to glow red AND smoke. I turned everything off, unplugged the stove, waited 2 hours, plugged the range back in and repeated my experiment. Sure enough, it happend again.
I feel that this poses an EXTREME fires danger AND extreme risk for accidental but severe burn injuries.

The product, in the report: Freestanding Electric Range
Unit experienced electrical problem upon the completion of a pre-heat cycle. A large “pop” was heard from behind the unit with the unit immediately appearing to lose power. A small amount of smoke was observed coming from underneath the control area. The smoke smelled of burning wire and quickly dissipated. The electrical service panel for the home was quickly inspected with the breaker for the electric range observed in the “tripped” position. The applicance was allowed to cool before being moved to inspect the rear of the unit. There was no obvious external damage visible. The cover of the terminal block area was removed with severe electrical and heat damage being observed at the “red” terminal connection. The “red” wire of the cord has completely burned through at the terminal connection with heat damage impacting the terminal block and discoloring the main “red” oven wire. All terminal nuts at the terminal block were loose with cord terminals allowed to move freely creating a fire and electrical hazard. The unit was installed by an unknown party prior to my purchase of the home. Lock nuts and/or lock washers were not used to secure the terminal ends to the terminal block and were not recommended or required within the manufacturer’s installation instructions, but clearly in this instance would appear to have reduced the risk of fire and electrical hazards. This unit has been in service for residential use since January 2011.

The product, in the report: Double Oven
Caller’s double oven was purchased 12/29/2008, installed in her home January 2009.
January 16th, 2012 around 1:00PM caller was pre heating her electric upper oven (she has double oven) to approximately 400 degrees, taking pizza out of plastic wrap while she waited.
She looked up at the oven, saw that it was at 397 degrees, had just put her hand on the oven handle to begin opening the door when she actually heard explosion, she jerked her hand away from handle while turning her head out of instinct. In between the two ovens there is a vent where some glass came flying out onto the pizza.
She was very shaken, she had no idea what had just happened.
Her husband came into the kitchen, turned the oven off immediately, opened the upper oven and glass came flying out with enough force that it went out of the kitchen and into eating area which is approximately ten to twelve feet away from the ovens.
He had instinctively turned his head also so was not injured either.
Caller pulled out her user’s manual for the double oven, noted the manufacturer’s phone number and called around 1:30PM, same day, January 16th, 2012.
She spoke with manufacturer rep named [REDACTED] who in the very beginning asked her if she was alright, said she would be right back with her but then returned to the line and told the caller that she must have done something wrong such as taking racks out or hitting the rack. It has been two and half months, she cannot use her top oven, she is afraid to use her bottom oven. She has been told about six times that the part had been shipped or is on the way but it never arrives. She believes that there may be another issue with this part.
She spoke with one rep at extended warranty who said they would issue her 75% of cost of new double oven but she would have to pay removal, installation, etc. which would run her alone as much as approximately $1600.
Caller could not find the date of manufacture.
She would like the public to know to be aware and be cautious.
She believes whole heartedly that there is an extreme safety issue with this oven and would like to have a replacement of same value, better & safer quality at manufacturer expense including removal, installation.

Whirlpool electric range part number GBS307PRS01. Turned the oven on to preheat, after a few minutes, there was a blue spark, and the lower heating element started to melt, creating flames and an intense flame. We turned the oven off at the breaker and the fire went out. Now the lower element is melted, with bubbles of steel having dripped onto the lower oven.
I looked online, and found a disturbing number of people with a similar story about their oven. There must be something wrong with this design, and I hope something can be done about it before someone’s house burns down.

The product, in the report: free standing electric range/convection oven
On March 3, 2012 my Whirlpool electric range GR478LXPQ0, RSO813194, purchased in 2005 malfunctioned during oven usage. I couldn’t cancel or adjust the temperature or time setting. This went on for several minutes while both my husband and I pushed every button on the control panel. Eventually it came back on and we were able to cancel it and turn it off. This is the 4th or 5th time this has happened. The first few times it happened, the oven was set over 450 and we couldn’t cancel it at all. We had to turn off the circuit breaker and eventually it cools down and works again. My daughter has Whirlpool built-ins and this happens to her, too. We thought the oven went into clean mode and locked itself so we never set it above 450 again, but last night the temp was at 350. I have never used the clean feature for fear of fire because of this. When it first happened, I called Whirlpool and they said they had never heard of this happening before. When an unsolicited offer to insure the stove arrived in the mail, I took advantage of it. A service call was placed for March 6.
I’ll never buy a Whirlpool product again.

Whirlpool electric range (RF378LXPB2) was turned on to a preset self clean cycle. At the beginning of the third hour in cycle range began to beep. Display window showed E1F2 or something similar. Not knowing what that meant I looked at the use and care guide, no information. Range would not turn off, disconnected power cord. Flames and black smoke continued, called fire department. Entire back control panel shorted out and burned up, scorched wall tile and caused damage to wall mounted microwave oven. Had to remove range and microwave from house. Whirlpool was closed for three day holiday and when reached they were not interested as range had been removed from home and pictures were not sufficient.

The product, in the report: glass cook top
Dear Sir: I would like to bring your attention of an unsafe glass cook top manufactured by Whirlpool, model No. GLT3014GQO, I am writing to make you aware that this product is having a probable cause for human safety compromise. Over the Christmas Holidays while cooking, the glass cook top shattered to pieces with glass flying all over and even pieces hitting the ceiling. It was very scary and unsafe. There are 95 homes in [REDACTED] community, South Orange County, California and I know there was a similar mishap in one of the homes. I contacted the Customer Service Department of Whirlpool. They wanted the model No. of the cook top. To my surprise the model no. was hidden under the cook top and I was unable to find it. It was not even listed in the Owner’s!User manual. Then an authorized technician from Whirlpool was scheduled to come to my house and assess the damages. He came, looked at the cook top, and started saying “very expensive, very expensive,” He then pulled out the entire oven underneath to find the model number. He quoted $880,00 to replace a similar cook top. When I declined to use his services due to the high cost of the replacement, he refused to give me the pertinent details of the cook top, Next day, Whirlpool was contacted again and after one hour, customer service finally read the log of the technician and gave the model no. The actual price of the cook top was only $373.10 .. is this a good faith estimate from an authorized Whirlpool technician? To add furthermore, the customer service at Whirlpool stated that their authorized technician can jack up the prices as they wish. Four days has gone by unable to cook for myself and eating out has only added to the frustration through this entire ordeal. I am a senior citizen running around looking for a cook top at the local appliance stores to find the right product. Whirlpool could just have been more considerate during these holidays to assist me to find a cook top which is compatible. Please consider the safety measures to be taken regarding the Whirlpool glass cook tops so incidents like this one are prevented in the future,

The product, in the report: Whirlpool smooth top oven/range
I have a Whirlpool smooth top stove that’s about 5-7 years old, purchased new. Over the last couple years it has developed a problem where the burners, if turned on to a setting, do not regulate the temperature, instead they stay on at full power. This happens intermittently and unexpectedly. For example, place a pot on the burner at medium heat, it heats up, and begins regulating, then for no reason fails to regulate, instead continuing to heat at full power. we ruined several expensive pots and burned a number of meals. Obviously, if a cooking pot or pan was left unattended for any extended period of time, it has the potential to cause a fire or severe burns.

The product, in the report: Built-In Electric Oven
While baking potato pancakes at about 400 degrees in my Whirlpool electric wall oven, Model RBS245PDB14 (now 8 years old), the oven had been opened once after about 8 minutes to turn the contents over, and then approximately 5-8 minutes later the kitchen filled with smoke as the oven apparently got very hot and caused the food to catch on fire. The oven locked on its own and we were unable to open it and also could not turn the oven off. The house filled with smoke while the contents continued to burn. We had to cut off power to the oven with the circuit breaker in order to stop the oven from heating, and opened all windows and doors to the house. About ten minutes later when we turned the circuit breaker back on, the oven still was locked and we couldn’t open it, the off button still would not respond, and the coils were red again. The self cleaning cycle was NOT on. We had to turn the circuit breaker off again in order to get the power off. We called Whirlpool and they said we should wait a few hours for the oven to cool, then turn the circuit breaker on again and see if we could then open the oven and turn it off. About three hours later, we turned the circuit breaker on again, were able to open the oven door and remove the charred food, tried to turn the oven power off, but we couldn’t and the oven started to heat again (the coils got red hot). We had to flip the circuit breaker again to keep the power off. Whirlpool sent a technician on 12/28/11 who tested the oven and advised that the control was bad and since it would cost several hundred dollars to replace, it was more practical to get a new oven. This is the SECOND such incident with this oven. About three years ago, my high school son was baking cookies in the oven, and the exact thing happened - the oven locked, the house filled with smoke from burning cookies, and my son was unable to turn the oven off or open the oven door to remove the burning cookies. Again, we had to open all windows and doors to get the smoke out and wait a few hours until we could open the oven. At that time, the oven did not turn itself back on as it did this time. When I called Whirlpool at that time, they advised that my son must have accidentally turned on the cleaning cycle, though he was certain he did not. I always thought that perhaps he did accidentally turn on the cleaning cycle, but I now know that he did not and the problem was with the oven. Although we will be replacing our oven, this is obviously potentially very dangerous and we want to make sure it does not happen to other consumers.

I didn’t realize that I have an oven that had a safety recall back in 2004. Last night, I decided to use the self-clean feature. The oven and control panel both shut off during the cycle. The oven is now cooled but the door is locked and the control panel is still off. After researching the issue, I discovered that this is a well-known issue with these ovens and that some have had the glass explode during the self-clean cycle. I also learned that they may have faulty wiring, posing a fire hazard.

All the heating elements on my Whirlpool freestanding electric range (Model #: WFE361LVS) stopped functioning. The contols, clock and lights appeared to function normally. I unplugged the range and removed the terminal block cover to look for a loose connection between the power supply cord (Utilitech 50Amp, 4-wire range cord) and the terminal block. The ring connector on line 2 (red) was severly corroded and broken. The wire insulation and corresponding attachment point on the terminal block appeared charred and melted/deformed. Evidence of corrosion and melted insulation was visible on the line 1 (black) ring connector. The stove was in service of a single family household for 1 year and 4 months. Products purchased at local Lowe’s. Power supply cord installed by Lowe’s appliance delivery personnel.

While using the cooktop of the Whirlpool Model Number: GGE390LXS01 smoothtop electric cooking range we noticed that the edges and sides of the cooktop and range including the edges of our countertops that the range sits between were becoming to hot to touch and could easily burn a young child. We frequently have our 2 year old granddaughter in our home. While it is normal for the top of the range to be hot and remain hot for a period of time until the warning light shuts off, I have never had a stove previously where the edges and sides of the range became too hot to safely touch. We have also reported this issue to the Whirlpool Corporation. We are interested in determining if other owners of this model of range are having similar issues.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool electric flat top range. Black.
In May of 2011 my range went into clean mode while cooking causing the food to burn. I used it again and it did the same thing. I called Whirlpool and they said they would send out a repairman and pay for diagnostics, labor and I had to pay for parts. When the repair man couldn’t figure out what was wrong whirlpool said they would not pay for labor. The repairman noted that the lock mode motor was burnt and had melted down to the next componit. He also stated that the range was useable. I contacted Whirlpool and they said it had out lived its use ability and they would give me $100 for it. I tried to use it as they said I could this time just the burners and it went into clean mode and would not shut off. I had to shut off the breaker. Two days later I turned on the breaker and it went into clean mode as soon as it got power. I have since unplugged it and have been without a stove since June. Whirlpool refuses to see the fire hazard and their responsability considering the service report says it is useable. I paid over $1000 for this unit and do not this it is fair that a company can get away with this kind of safety issue. How many more flat top stoves are having this problem? I know of a few because I have seen them on craigs list for sale stating that they might need a need heating eliment because they smelt something like wire burning. I also smelt that but never saw it because it is incased in metal in the back of the stove. This smell came when I wasn’t using it. I am lucky it did not burn my house down when it caught fire. They should be recallled and Whirlpool be made to replace or reimburse for this faulty product. The range never tripped my breaker and it should have when it caught fire.

The product, in the report: Electric stove
Responded to a report of a fire in an oven. Upon my arrival found that a small fire had occurred in a Whirlpool Model RF395LXED Serial RE3718609 240volt electric stove. The home health aid reports that while cooking dinner for the resident the stove went into the self cleaning mode. The door locked and caused the food in the oven to start on fire. She was unable to open the oven and remove the burning material. The fire department was contacted. After a time they were able to get the oven to open and extinguished the small fire. The home health aid reports that on 9/30 she also cooked in the oven. She states that on that day, after the stove was turned off, the stove also went into self clean mode. The stove was disconnected and she was told to no longer use the stove. The stove was left at the residence.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool self-cleaning range rf395 lxe
My whirlpool RF395LXE serial # rg5313780 range malfunctioned, resulting in the oven locking and turing on at a very high temperature, as though I had set the oven to clean. However, this happened when the oven and stove were turned off and no one was in the room. Whirlpool (Safety unit) said I could either replace the circuit board or replace the stove. I was alarmed that the circuit board could malfunction in such a way that the oven would unexpectedly turn on and, apparently, enter the cleaning cycle.

The product, in the report: 24” Electric Wall Oven
In January 2011, the consumer preheated the oven and put in partially frozen food. A few minutes later, the oven went into self dean mode, locked and started beeping. The temperature sensor had gone out and was replaced thru the consumer’s extended warranty.
The consumer was baking cookies and set the timer. After a few minutes she smelled something burning. She noticed the oven went into self cleaning mode and was beeping. She says the oven door locked up so she was unable to open it. The cookies became charred and the oven and kitchen filled with smoke. The consumer says that she had to shut off the circuit breaker. She says the oven eventually cooled off to the point that she could get the oven open. The oven interior was coated with black soot. She contacted the manufacturer who said the unit was not under recall and it would need to be repaired thru her extended warranty. The consumer also requested a phone number for someone higher in the company to discuss if the oven could be replaced or repaired so it would not lock up again if further parts went out. No numbers were provided. The manufacturer said a complaint could be filed with a supervisor.

The product, in the report: White Whirlpool stove
Homeowner’s boyfriend put a pot of water with ravioli in it on the electric cooktop of their stove and turned it on high. He took some medication to help him sleep, went into the bedroom a short time later and was awoken by his dog to smoke and the fire alarms going off. He took the pot off the stove which had burned ravioli in it and threw it off the porch onto the lawn below. He was rescued by FD on the porch and subsequently transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Investigation revealed the heating element, which the pot was on, was left in the high position. A portion of the copper bottom of the pot remained on the cooking element after the pot was removed. The wiring harness behind the metal plate in the rear of the stove was melted and had significant heat damage.

The product, in the report: Electric range
She opened the oven door while the oven was powered in the off position she went to adjust the top shelf in the oven and noticed a blue flame in the back corner on the left side inside of the oven.
She let the top shelf go in the oven a noticed that somewhere in the oven it began to make a zapping sound and smelled something that appeared to be hot. She contacted the firm immediately after the incident (same date) they advised her that they would send out a technician on the nest date.
The consumer advised the consumer that she feared that it was going to start a fire. The representative that she spoke with advised her to power the circuit breaker in the off position.
She decided against allowing a technician to come out to the home but spoke with one of the technicians from the firm on 7/14/2011 who advised her to just get rid of the appliance. The technician also advised the consumer that she could have been possibly shocked if she did not release the shelf when she heard the zapping noise
On 7/14/2011 she contacted the retailer and a technician came out to the home and removed the appliance. The technician also advised her not to use the range any longer and to get rid of it. She later purchased another range.
She wanted the firm to take the range back into their possession to be able to diagnose the failure but they showed no interest in the matter.

While baking in the oven at 350 degrees approximately 20 minutes later the oven changed its setting from the bake setting to the self clean mode . She heard three beeps and noticed on the control panel that it was on the self clean mode. She made several attempts to power the range in the off position by using the knob on the control panel but when the oven would not power off she hand to power the circuit breaker in the off position.
She powered the circuit breaker back in the on position on 7/14/2011 and the oven was in the off position. She discontinued the use of the oven but continued the use of the stove top.
The firm was contacted on 7/18/2011 ( representative that he spoke with name is unknown) and that they would be willing to send out a technician but she would required to pay for the parts and the firm would pay for the labor, diagnostic, and trip.
On 7/19/2011 a technician (name unknown) from the firm came out and indicated that the motor in the range had caught fire but the failure might have occurred from the circuit board but he was not exactly sure but he advised that those parts should be replaced in the oven.
No repairs were made because the technician advised the consumer that she would be required to pay for the labor and parts. The consumer indicated that since the technician was not quite sure what needed to be replace she did not want to make any repairs until someone was really sure since she was no responsible to pay for the parts.
She currently uses the cook top but not the oven and no repairs have been made.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 30” Electric Range White
I contacted Comsuner Product Safety Commission last year because I was very concerned about the safety of my electric range. The oven door is not flush against the oven causing a 9/16” gap from top of door to top of oven and a 11/16th gap at the side of the door. This seems to get worse when the oven is being used. If something in the oven caught on fire, it would not be confined and could cause a fire in the kitchen/house. I first contacted Whirlpool on 1/13/09 complaining I was unable to use auto clean and the code F5EO came up. They told me this indicated the door and switches do not agree and to follow directions indicated in the manual. This worked for a while but then I noticed the over door seemed to be dropping away from the oven itself. I contacted Whirlpool again on10/12/10 with my concern about the safety of the oven door not being flush against the oven to the point where the oven light comes on even with the door closed. Since I did not purchase the extended warranty, the were not concerned. In my opinion, this is a manufacture design default and seems to center on the hinges of the oven door. The only way the oven light goes off when the oven is being used is to pull the oven door up and push the oven door in, but the door drops down again and the oven light comes on after a short time. I am sure I am not the only one having this problem with this electric range!
