The product, in the report: GE 27” Built-In Double Wall Mount Electric Oven. Color black. Model #JK3500DF2BB, Serial #GD600604Q. It was installed around April 7, 2014

I have a GE wall mount double electric oven. on 11/23/15 my four year old son was using a magnet to identify magnetic objects in the kitchen. He walked up to the lower oven and tapped the magnet to the glass. At that moment, the glass exploded sending tiny pieces of glass through my entire dining room, kitchen and breakfast area. The entire piece of glass broke leaving next to nothing left on the oven door. The oven was off, at room temperature and had not been used for several days. The oven is barely 18 months old and was installed by an appliance company when our house was built. This is a new home so everything was handled by the general contractor for the builder.

The product, in the report: Electric Range

We have owned this Range for about 1 year. In that time we have repeatedly experienced burners staying on long after they were turned off. I thought it was just taking a long time to cool off. But I did an internet search and found another person commenting that they replaced the control on one of the burners because it would stay on after being turned off.

The product, in the report: Electric built in wall oven

Caller stated that the heating element of the oven overheated and was in flames to a point that it broke. He stated that while the oven was still in the pre-heating mode they heard a noise and noticed the incident. The control panel was used to power it off. However, the following day his spouse stated that when she went by the unit it was still warm from not turning off, she turned the heat control to low and the unit cooled down.

The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

Caller feels that this oven could have caused a house fire if no one was present.

The product, in the report: Wall Oven (dual)

We bought a home recently that has a wall oven (dual) by GE. The oven exterior gets extremely hot when the oven is used and the control panel is peeling off. The model number is JTP35S0M1SS. Though GE has recalled some ovens, this model number has not been recalled, though I see a similar problem in my model too.

The product, in the report: Electric Oven

Caller stated that the control panel easily powers on by barely brushing against the oven, especially turning on the clean cycle which locks the oven at times when she has contents in it. This has caused her food to burn. (1/2015) She contacted the company and someone was sent out who advised her that the unit was made to operate like that. Caller stated that this has been ongoing since she purchased the range. She stated that she received a case# [REDACTED] from the company.

Caller stated that she received a letter from the company stating that they hope that the matter was resolved after no one assisted her in resolving the matter.

Caller feels that the oven is a safety hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: GE Electric Range JBP24WOH2WW Note: I cannot find any manufacture date on the range anywhere, but this form requires me to enter something, so I put in 7/1/2003 as a default.

I am writing to let you know about an ongoing problem we have been having with our GE range, model number JBP24WOH2WW, oven element melting and catching fire. This has now happened twice. The first time, August 25, 2011, the element, which was original to the model, caught fire (electrical fire--sparks). We called 9-1-1 and turned off power to the range and the fire put itself out. The coating of the element had melted off in a bent area and that is where the fire originated. The element was replaced and lasted for four years. A few days ago I started smelling a burning smell and then a smell of soy sauce (which I was not using). Yesterday, August 28, 2015, the replacement element started shooting sparks, catching fire. We caught it much sooner this time and shut off the oven.

We have also had to replace all of the surface elements of the range. It seems this model has an ongoing problem with uneven heating leading to electrical fires. We have not heard of any recall, but wonder if others have the same problem and if it will eventually be recalled.

    Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE 30” Spectra Radiant Range free-standing range stainless steel, black with black smooth top cooking surface

Started oven in my freestanding range to do some baking. There was an area in the lower element that was glowing a bit brighter than the rest of the element during the preheat time. Loaded item to be baked into the oven and continued on with work in the kitchen. After a short time, likely a couple of minutes at best, I looked into the oven as I walked past it to put items away in nearby cupboard. The area that had been glowing brighter had gotten exceptionally hot/bright and was throwing off sparks such as one would see with a fireworks sparkler. Not as many sparks as fireworks, but definitely a fair amount of them. I immediately shut off the oven using the electronic control panel located on the back-splash area of the stove. The excessively hot area did not stop or decrease in its intensity and was moving along the element. Direction of movement was along the element working its way towards where the element entered the oven at the lower left side. Incident started on the right side of the element on the first pass going towards back of the oven. It moved along the element around the shorter center loop and back along the left side of the shorter loop before starting around the back right loop. I attempted to try to cool the hot, exceedingly bright orange/white glowing area with a spray-mist bottle with no effect at all. I then noticed that turning the oven off at the control had not worked as the element was still showing a dull glow all the way from where it enters the oven at the back right entry location all the way to the area undergoing catastrophic failure. In order to end the event I had to trip the breaker in the main breaker panel in the garage.

The rear element has dropped from its secured position on my GE glass top range. This happened shortly after I bought my range in 2009. I had a repair man come to my house and he fixed it. Now I turned my stove on and it has happened again. I seldom use the back burner . This is a fire hazard !

The product, in the report: GE Profile Electric Convection Oven, model JB910SL6SS; serial number HS236210Q

On Sunday, June 28, 2015, I was roasting something in my GE Profile Oven. As I was standing in the kitchen with my son, we heard a humming sound, then a buzzing sound, then -all of a sudden- sparks and a ball of fire were in the oven cabinet. I started to run to the stove but then my son told me not to go near it. My husband heard my screams and he came in and turned off the stove. It then went completely dead. I have been extremely distressed about this...the product was only 6 years old, and just off the extended warranty. I also have been having anxiety attacks thinking about what might have happened if we weren’t there at the time this happened.

I called GE, and they sent a service man to look at the unit, and he determined that the convection unit malfunctioned and the fire in the cabinet destroyed the computer. The estimate to repair was about $700.

When I went back to the store where the product was purchased, and conveyed my disappointment that the stove was only 6 years old, the salesperson replied “well, they only make them to last 7-10 years anyway”......

The product, in the report: GE Range - new

Brand new range emitted an acrid, plastic burning smell when heated to 450 degrees for one hour. Smoke poured from an otherwise clean, brand new oven to the point that it was choking. At the time the oven was first heated I placed a box fan in one window and opened a window across the room in anticipation of a ‘first use’ smell. Still, the odor was overwhelming, irritated my eyes, nose and caused a cough. The odor persists today, a day afterword with the fan still airing out the house!

I called the manufacturer who gave the excuse that it was outgassing from the acrylic binder used in the insulation of the unit and who assured me that it would dissipate with time. They recommended I run the self cleaning cycle to speed the process. All this did was increase the odor.

At this point GE has basically absolved itself of any responsibility for the product. It is such a widespread problem that the manual suggests moving birds out of the room! This product is basically unsafe for anyone with even minor respiratory problems.

The consumer pulled the stove out from the wall and removed the back cover panels to make sure there were no more flames. The connection where the external power cord meets the internal wiring was melted

(03/21/2015)The consumer contacted GE via email. He is waiting for a response.

The consumer is aware of a recall-Rel #09-189-for the GE Profile Duel Fuel range, but his model is not included. The consumer thinks that the model numbers should be broadened.

Controller board in GE Wall oven failed leaving broil element energized causing potential for Fire

    Oven Model #JPK15W0W2WW Controller Part # WB27K5299 Model Year 1998 Serial #SS696398Q

When event occurred the oven gave a alarm and an F2 error code however the broiler element failed to de-energize. I pressed the Clear/OFF button and the element de-energized. Had someone not been watching this closely it could have been a very different outcome.

I am a retired electrical engineer so I pulled the schematics and preformed basic trouble shooting everything checked good in the no 240 volt supply on state. Re-energized the oven and just pressed the start button (which is used for setting the clock and many other functions) and the broil element starting heating again. Pressed Clear/Off and isolated the 240 Volt supply. On checking I noticed that GE no longer makes this control board and has replace it with the WB27T10264 Control board which is not a plug in replacement as modifications to the wires are required to install this unit.

My husband and I were upstairs in bed, and it was 11:45 p.m. We heard a loud breaking and crashing sound, followed by crackling and breaking.

We thought someone was intruding in the house. We went downstairs and the oven door of our GE electric range, model #JB640DR5BB had spontaneously broken and pieces were as far as into the next rooms.

The product was not in use. The stove top had been used the day prior, and the oven had been used two days prior. No injuries were sustained since we were upstairs and have no pets or children.

GE is very helpful with customer service and will be out on 08/22/2014 to repair the problem.

The caller is filing the report on behalf of his mother in law.

The oven had not been used for 3-4 days prior to 7/10/14. On 7/10/14 at approximately 4:30 am the consumer was awaken by a loud noise in the kitchen. She went to the kitchen and noticed that the outside glass door of the oven had shattered. She saw glass pieces everywhere around the unit and approx. 15ft in distance from the unit. The oven was off and no sign of heat emitting from the unit.

The consumer contacted the firm and filed a report with [REDACTED], a rep from GE. An appointment was scheduled for 7/15/14 for a technician tobe sent to her home and look at the unit at no expense to the consumer.

On 7/15/14 a technician went to her home and inspected the unit. The technician stated that the unit was repairable but needed a part number for the outside oven glass. The consumer contacted the GE rep. at 1-800-386-1215 [REDACTED] but was not provided with a part number for the outside oven glass. Since the part number was not obtained the technician could not conduct any repairs. The technician could not give any explanation for the shattered glass.

On 7/24/14 the consumer called [REDACTED] (GE rep.) but was not able to speak with her. The consumer spoke with another rep from GE and they advised her that the incident was still under investigation and she would be contacted on 7/25/14.

The consumer’s case number with the firm is [REDACTED].

Caller stated there have been no prior incidents.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Spectra Electric Freestanding Range/Oven

GE profile Spectra electric range - baking brownies at 350 degrees in the oven when a very bright glow like a welders torch developed on the lower burner element of the oven and began to flame and crackle like a sparkler. Fortunately my daughter and her friends were in the kitchen and noticed the bright glow and alerted us. Turning off the oven alone did not stop the problem - had to pull the oven out and unplug it. The lower burner element had broken or burned through. Fortunately someone was present in the immediate area and noticed it quickly. This type of failure could have caused a very serious fire if we had set a timer and been in another room. In checking to see if the lower element was easily removed for replacement we took off the back panel on the range and found singed and burned insulation and singed browned wire coverings as well. Needless to say we opted to discard the Range and purchased a new one, NOT GE this time . GE needs to put a stop fail of some sort on this part to prevent catastrophic failure. If the element is going to fail it should stop working, lose power , not burn up! This happened suddenly, with NO warning and with no prior issue or concern with the unit at all. Hate to think what it could have resulted in under other circumstances such as roast in the oven which you wouldn’t stand nearby and watch for 4 hours. If we had not been in close proximity we could have returned to find the range up in flames and the kitchen too.

She was planning to heat steaks that had been cooked earlier but took them to the grill instead. She had also been planning to heat the corn on the burners but the burners were not working at all so she heated it in the microwave. The range smelled like the self cleaning mode all through the oven.

Update from the consumer on the consent form: GE came out the connector cord was burned. Tech said it was not a safety issue. I believe it was. There was a fire if the is burned cords/connectors.

To whom it may concern, Gentlemen, the consumer’s name is [REDACTED] and she is writing concerning a General Electric range stove purchased in July of 2009.The stove has not worked right from the time it was purchased and had gotten so bad she recently had to call a repairman to come out and check things out. When finished he reported to the consumer that the temperature settings were at least 45 degrees off and that there was no insulation in the stove at all. He also indicated it was manufactured with inferior materials. He also noted that the drawer designed to store pots and pans was also manufactured with substandard metal and was rapidly falling apart because the tracks were not designed to do the job. The metal is thin and could easily cut or scrape someone. The consumer feels that this situation should be looked into and that a recall of unsafe home appliances should be considered including heating and cooking products. Someone should look into into renewing or rewriting the regulations governing such appliances and manufactures found to be using inferior materials and placing unsuspecting buyers at risk should be prosecuted under the law. Had the consumer not found this out concerning her stove there is a good chance that it could have started a house fire which she would not have been able to escape seeing that she is disabled and alone at times.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration regarding this issue.

    Thank you, [REDACTED]

We purchased a GE range, model no. JB650DF1BB on Oct. 17, 2013. As your owner’s manual states, there was a smell when I used the oven, so I used self-clean cycle for three hours. The “burning,” “oily” odor lasted for over ten hours. The smell permeated my entire house - including the draperies and furniture. We opened windows in the kitchen and used a fan to try and draw the odor outside. It was 45º. If ovens need to be cleaned before use, it should be done at the factory.

This is totally unacceptable. This is my third new stove, I never experienced that awful smell before.

My husband has COPD and I have asthma. Just what was the noxious odor that my husband and I inhaled?

We will never again purchase a GE appliance.

My wife and I woke up in the middle of night to hear a beeping noise and a burnt smell. I went downstairs to the kitchen and found the broiler was on, the oven fan was blowing, the unit was beeping and the display was flashing F2. We had not used the broiler for months prior to this. I pressed the off button and the display turned off for about 5 seconds and then turned back on. I then tried twice more and the broiler kept turning back on. I then went and turned off the breaker to the wall oven. At this point the smoke from the unit had triggered the fire alarms.

A few weeks later we turned the breaker back on and the broiler automatically cut on without us having pressed any button to turn it on.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Freestanding Electric Double Range

The consumer was using both of the ovens and several burners on top. The consumer stated that the electricity went out in the kitchen. She turned off the circuit break and waited for the oven to cool off. The consumer waited about a minute before turning the range back on, and the electricity went out again. The electricity continued to go out until the consumer turned off one of the ovens.

The consumer recently had her kitchen and electricity remodeled. So the consumer called the electrician to come out and see what was causing the problem. The electrician stated that the range was pulling 62 watts instead of the allotted 40 watts. The electrician stated that the product is a fire hazard.

The consumer contacted GE and they sent out a technician on 7/26/13. The technician did not know what was causing the problem. The technician left and called back later on in the day stating that they would escalate the information to a higher department. The GE customer escalation department called the consumer on 7/30/13 and informed her that “this is not their [GE] problem and the customer is not likely to have all items on at the same time.”

The manual stated that the range only requires a 40watt plug and there is no warning that the product may pull more than 40 watts.

The consumer had similar problem in Nov 2012 but at that time the consumer thought something else caused the electricity to go out.

The consumer has continued using the range but she has not used both of the ovens at the same time.

The product is not included in any recalls.

UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: Contacted factory for details- they state product may pull 50+ amps but product is not marked or labelled as such...requires wiring that is not standard. GE customer escalation states “it’s not likely for the user to use both ovens and burners at one time.” “Nothing they can do”

I turned the oven to off position and turned it back on to 400 degrees and it beeped to indicate it was preheated but when I opended the oven door, the Broiler element was red hot and it would not turn off even when putting the knob in the off position. I took the potatoes out quickly as they were black from the broiler. Had to turn off the circuit breaker as the oven was too hot too move to unplug. After it cooled a few minutes we pulled out the unit and unplugged it. We waited a few mintues and turned on the breaker and plugged it back in. The broiler element still came on without turning the knob on. Had to leave the whole unit unplugged.

I was preheating my oven to 450 F when I noticed a light glowing through the oven window. When I opened the door, I realized the oven baking element was on fire. It looked like a sparkler as the flame moved around the coil. I turned the oven off but it continued to burn. We tried smothering it with a wet rag which didn’t work. We ended up pulling it away from the wall and unplugging it which eventually worked to stop the flame.

This evening (2-23-2013) I turned on my GE oven (purchased in 2008) to bake some cookies and noticed a strange burning smell in my kitchen. The smell definitely smelled like an electrical device was burning. As I inspected my oven I noticed a bunch of smoke coming from up over the back of the oven. I turned the oven off and opened a window. After the oven cooled I pulled it away from the wall, unplugged it and took one of the back panels off to see what was burning. The white fluffy insulation around the wires had melted and discolored in some spots, the main electrical cord that plugs into the outlet was scorched where it connects to the back of the oven and had a melted hole in it, and a section of wires leading into the center back of the oven were discolored and scorched. Also, where the main grey power cord connects the metal bolts and plastic housing have discolored, melted and cracked. Can be seen in photos attached.

The product, in the report: Electric cooktop (aka cook-top or cook top).

Re: GE electric cooktop: Model Number “J P651 0C1AD” (no quotes), S/N ML737797.

Hi U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,

We have a GE electrical electric cooktop (aka cook top, or cook-top). It has four electric coil elements on a small island in the middle of the kitchen). On Thursday evening 11/8/2012 the coil exploded on fire. The fireball was about one feet with sparks flying out in all directions. I was outside and heard the loud noise it made. My wife was scared to death and shaking when I rushed inside. She was near to the range while incident happened. She had just walked two steps away towards the sink, and thankfully was not scalded by the blast of boiling water and steam that was ejected. The explosion left a black sooty film and spots in a 3’ diameter area, all the way to the refrigerator. Thankfully there was only water, and not cooking oil in that pot.The fireball burned a hole in the bottom of the cooking pan too. Also thankfully, the circuit breaker tripped automatically.

After cooling down, I removed the damaged coil. I also removed the control panel (with the four turn knobs on top) to inspect for further damage. In addition to the blown out area on the heating element/coil, the two wires that run from the control panel knob/switch to the coil had burnt areas on them (one place I could see copper wire poking out).

After cleaning up the mess, I started the circuit breaker again. I saw the burner light does not off even though all the burner switches are off. After the incident, I did little on-line research. I was able to find a CPSC report at http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1201875 That report describes almost exactly what happened to us. Because of the similarity, I did use some of their text as a framework to compose our report here.

I also found CPSC Recall Alert #04-576 at : http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml04/04576.html?omni_key=Ranges_and_Wall_Ovens_Recall Our model number JP6510C1AD and S/N ML737797 are not listed in the recall notice.

My wife [REDACTED] called GE Consumer Relations at 1-800-386-1215 and spoke to [REDACTED] at Ext: [REDACTED]. She arranged for a service technician to visit us yesterday on 11/15/2012 (ie. GE Consumer Relations Case# [REDACTED]) . The technician looked at the coil, wires and damaged pot. He told us that it is normal for burners to fail in this way. Honestly, I’ve known of coils/elements/burners failing over the years, but they normally just stop working, not explode without any warning whatsoever (and damage the control switches in the stove too). He mentioned something about repairs and I told him he was only here to inspect per GE’s request, and not repair (at our cost for parts and labor). When I prompted him about the burner light that does not off even though all the burner switches are off, he mentioned something about a short in one of the switches.

Today we received an email from [REDACTED] at GE. She wanted to know how the how the technician’s visit went. We have not responded to her yet, pending filing this report with you first.

I have attached photos of the damaged burner, cooking pan and burnt wires. Some were taken on 11/8 and some I took today with my other camera to get (hopefully) better pictures. You ask for a purchase date. We don’t know for sure, it came with the house when we bought it back in 2000.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could take necessary action. We have not had use of the cooktop since 11/8/2012. There are three remaining coils/elements on this unit. Based on what happened last Thursday to my wife. I don’t think the cooktop is safe for her or anyone else in the house to use. Next time someone might get seriously hurt. Next time it might blow up cooking oil and burn down our house. Next time it might happen at some other unsuspecting residence with a child standing next to it. There is no notice of imminent failure whatsoever.

Please help us. We look forward to your reply or phone call.

    Regards, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Electric range

(9/1/2012) The consumer stated that she noticed that the indicator lights on the stove were glowing. The consumer’s husband placed his hand on one of the burners and felt that it was warming up. The consumer immediately tried to turn the knobs which were already in the OFF position to begin with. There was no success with that. The consumer then unplugged the unit and left it unplugged.

(9/4/2012) The consumer contact the manufacturer and an appointment was scheduled for September 5, 2012 at no charge since there was a safety issue.

(9/5/2012) The technician came out and after he plugged the unit in, the front left burner became extremely hot. The technician advised her that the all the switches failed, which caused the burners to come on by themselves. After the conclusion of the inspection, they were advised that the total repairs would be $400 and they would pay a percentage of that cost. The second offer is that they could purchase a new stove through them directly at a discounted rate, which only stands for 30 days from the day she spoke with them.

Needed to replace the lower heating element in my range. Upon removing the back panel I found burn areas in the “insulation” around the connectors of the element. I also found burn areas around the area of connection for the upper element, as well as several wires going in the back heading into the cook top area...one white wire with a cloth covering showed a burn area. I do have pictures but the battery died and will have to send at a later time. They show all of these areas.

The product, in the report: Wall Double Oven

The consumer says the oven does not sense the internal temperature. She says the unit continues to heat until it catches the food on fire. The consumer says the heat sensor has already been replaced twice.

The consumer contacted the manufacturer last week who only offered to replace the heat sensor again. She says she does not feel comfortable with just another replacement of the same part since this has already occurred now 3 times.

Addendem: Since the consumer originally spoke with our office, a GE repairman discovered a crimped and frayed temperature probe in the oven, which he replaced. However the oven would then not heat. So they want to replace another part.

I was pre-heating my oven to bake a frozen pizza. At about 400 degrees, I became aware of a loud crackling sound coming from the oven and opened the oven door to find an open flame and the element sparking and melting. It looked like an arc welder inside the oven. I turned it off and closed the oven door. The element continued to spark and burn, so I cut the circuit, dragged out the unit and unplugged it.

There is a large hole in the element, where it melted through. I hate to think what would have happened if the pizza had been in the oven.

Supposed to run 3 hrs. After 90 min, entire house filled w/smoke, haze, horrible industrial odor. (had vents going, and window open according to manual) Called GE; said to shut off oven. GE Rep corroborated thick air, smell, and turned off self clean after 5 min; GE representative said it smelled like insulation burning. Odor lasted for 2 days w/windows open. Cleaning has been innefective, and problem w/air in home lingers. In my opnion, GE has been totally unhelpful and uninterested in what happened. The oven was only on market for 4 months; GE ought to be looking at what caused this problem.

The product, in the report: GE Profile self-cleaning electric range

We are writing to alert GE to a serious fire safety hazard with one of your older electric ranges. In 1998 we bought a GE Profile self-cleaning electric range MODEL NO. JBP79W Y3WW (serial No. GT51923G) from an authorized dealer who installed it. The range served us well until last Sunday evening, February 5, 20012 when we turned it on to “Broil High” to toast a bun in the oven. Within a minute, the inside of the oven was sparking and flashing like a welding torch. The oven door was closed and we shut off the electric panel breaker to to stove which stopped the electrical arcing that was going on inside the oven. After the smoke cleared and the oven cooled down we saw that the upper electric element had burned through leaving about a two inch gap in the element - enclosed are some pictures we took of the burned out coil. We understand that there have been no recalls on this stove. Our concern is that if this had happened with a steak or chops in the oven there would have been a serious fire. We rarely use the broiler and then usually to brown garlic bread, rolls or casseroles. We replaced the old range with a new GE electric Model [REDACTED] and hope that when it dies it goes out with a whimper not a flashlbang the way this one did. We are genuinely concerned that this may prove harmful to other owners of this GE Range.

I used the oven to bake a dish about 4:00PM at about 5:00 Pm I turned the oven off making sure the red light was off to indicate the oven was off. I left the kitchen until about 2 AM when I went back to make sure everything was locked and lights off to call it a night expecting total darkness but instead I could see the electric broiler element in my oven was on even though the control panel lights that let you know the oven was on were not on but yet the oven was still on. When I went to check on why the oven was still on I could feel the heat from the stove and even the knobs were hot. I still turned the knob as if I wanted to turn the stove on and the lights went on and when I turned the knob to off the lights went out but the oven still stayed on. I opened the door to the oven while standing back to let the build up of heat out and as soon as I opened the door the inside pane of glass cracked. Since I could not shut the oven off or move it to unplug it I immediately went to the main breaker box and flipped the 50 amp breaker to the oven off and waited until the oven was cool enough to pull the bottom warming tray out to unplug the stove from the wall as a double precaution. The next day I plugged everything in again and the same thing happened so I disconnected the oven again because it won’t shut off even though the lights tell you it is off.

I have GE electrical range. Yesterday it stared fire on the coil. The fireball was about one feet with sparks. My mom was scared to death. She was near to the range while incident happen. She was slightly burned on the finger while removing pan. The fire burned the cooking pan too. I turned off the circuit breaker manually.

After cooling down, I removed the damaged coil. After cleaning up the mess, I started the circuit breaker again. I saw the burner light does not off even though all the burner switches are off. After the incident, I did little research on the model number, I was able to find cpsc recall Alert #04-576. http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml04/04576.html?omni_key=Ranges_and_Wall_Ovens_Recall My model number JBS03BH is listed in the recall notice. When I called on the toll free number, my serial number is not listed.

On July 15, 2011, I turned on my electric oven (GE Spectra Model #JBP26B0B1WH) and the heating element on the lower right side sparked, started burning, and sparks continued to fly from the flame. There was no food in the oven and there was no residue on the heating element, or other apparent causes for this spark. I turned off the oven, but there was still a visible electric current on the heating element, which began to melt, like when an insulated wire does when it shorts out and the plastic starts melting up the wire. We unplugged the oven and checked the breaker box to see if it had tripped, and within about 2 mins. the spark dissipated. The element was completely melted -- if we hadn’t taken immediate action, it could have easily developed into a dangerous house fire.
