The product, in the report: GE® 30” Slide-In Electric Range with Self-Cleaning Oven - these were installed around 2010-2012.
Our condo building installed GE JSP42SN1SS electric ranges as original equipment. More than one owner in our multi-unit building have reported that the range knobs are easily turned on accidentally, just by bumping against or leaning against the range. At least one has resulted in fire, and one was a near fire, only prevented by the owner intervening before combustion.

The product, in the report: GE electric range with glass cooktop. Stainless control panel (GE part #WB27X20076) has black painted information “dials” for setting the temperature of different ‘burner’ circles. Some controls also select the size of burner circle which can’t be safely done with the special markings erased by normal cleaning. Additionally, each ‘dial’ has a nearby diagram of the cooktop layout of the ‘burners’ with an all black circle to indicate which burner the dial controls as well as words “Right Front”, “Left Rear”, which are also necessary for safety so users know which ‘burner’ is being activated and will become hot.
Cleaning of GE electric range cooktop stainless steel control panel causes “Off”, “Hi”, and intermediate settings to disappear which makes operating the range cooktop unsafe because users, particularly unfamiliar users such as in rental properties, may not know the setting they select. The replacement part WB27X20076 is about $400 (not including installation) so unlikely to be replaced to restore the vital information on the control panel. This appears to be widespread as indicated by a response from GE 2 months ago at this website link https://www.geapplianceparts.com/store/parts/spec/WB27X20076. The date is irrelevant because this is a gradual process that should not occur if the control panel was manufactured to provide endurable information, not to be erased by mere normal cleaning.

The product, in the report: GE 36” induction cooktop
I want to report a serious safety complaint. My GE induction cooktop, model no. PHP9036DJ2BB, was cool, I had not used it. I briefly slid a sheet of aluminum foil, with wax paper on top of the foil, over part of the cooktop, intending to move it to the counter. It must have turned the cooktop on somehow because I did not press any buttons. The aluminum foil and wax paper ignited instantaneously, combusted really, and threw a huge flame. If I had not been right there to grab it and extinguish the flame, I truly believe it would have at the very least destroyed my kitchen and someone could have been injured. The flame was HUGE. The foil and the wax paper burned up into charred pieces floating through the air. Luckily the hood to the cooktop is extremely high and I have a tiled backsplash and quartz countertops, so I was able to wipe away all of the soot and there wasn’t any damage. Had my son or any child been home alone when this happened, it would have been devastating. Given that foil and paper are common in the kitchen, the ease at which this potentially devastating accident occurred is unacceptable. The cooktop is approximately 3 years old and in excellent condition. I contacted GE on 1/28/22 and they sent out a repair service on 2/23/22 to test it. All the repairman did was check to see if the controls operated the burners, which they did. There was no explanation of how or why this happened so rapidly and severely.

The product, in the report: GE Electric Range Model JS760SL5SS
I have a GE range Model #JS760SL5SS, purchased on 5/28/2020. I attempted to use the self clean feature on the oven for the first time today. I rarely use the oven so it was unnecessary to use this feature previously. Shortly after the cycle began (seemingly as soon as the oven reached temperature) I heard a very loud “pop” - the glass inside the oven door had shattered in the same way a windshield will shatter. It remained in place but with hundreds (thousands?) of tiny shatters throughout. The inside of the oven was glowing bright red. I immediately canceled the self clean cycle. About a half hour later, as the oven cooled, I heard more breaking glass and discovered that the previously shattered glass had just fallen into the oven cavity. The exterior glass panel remains intact - just the interior shattered. I have not opened the oven door. GE claims my oven is out of warranty and the repair will not be covered.

The product, in the report: GE electric 4 burner stove, white, digital clock, 4 knobs, glass oven door
Glass oven door of GE electric stove/oven popped, burst and shattered onto my kitchen floor. The stove and oven was turned off and noone was close enough to be injured, so thankful none of the children were in the room as we were celebrating our Christmas, I thank God noone was hurt. The popping was loud and scared us all as the glass shot onto my floor and bounced off my cabinets, took several hours to clean up all the glass pieces and shards. This stove was purchased at a Lowe’s store in March, 2018. Stove and oven had been turned off for over 2 hours and the glass just burst.

The product, in the report: GE Electric Range
The stovetop burners stay on, even after they are turned off at the controls. Then, my daughter who has a disability, went later to use the range and the burners were still unexpectedly very hot. She could have been badly burned or had her clothes catch fire. When I spoke with a GE customer service rep, they said that this could be caused by the stovetop not being cleaned enough, but such a weakness in the design seems very hazardous because they should expect that a stovetop will sometimes have food spills on it.

The product, in the report: 30 inch Smooth Surface 5 element 5.3 cu feet self-cleaning convection Freestanding Electric Range. Fingerprint resistant Stainless Steel
Five months ago my sister and I purchased a GE Self-Cleaning Range. On Sunday, She placed it into the self-cleaning mode. At first there was a warning beep and an indicator that the door needed to be locked. Once that was done, it went into the self-cleaning mode. Within the first hour, smoke detectors began to beep (which we expected). Within the first hour and a half, I noticed that the door was open approximately 2 inches. I asked my sister if she had opened the door and she told me she had not. Upon closer inspection we found the oven still in the cleaning mode and VERY hot, the latch handle completely melted into two. We turned the oven off.
Our concern is that the oven should have never continued in self-cleaning mode once the door was opened. A certified repair man informed us that he has been called out for numerous repairs similar to ours. This malfunction is a failure of a safety feature that puts consumers at risk. If we had small children, they could have been severely burned with the excessive heat. We could have had a fire. The latch handle provides no guarantee that the door will not open when it is burned off.

The product, in the report: General Electric 30” free-standing self-cleaning electric range. Model #JB258DM2WW
I am a 68 yr old housewife with many years of safe cooking experience. After being totally shocked by this incident I am reporting, I did some research and found this problem is not so uncommon, but nothing seems to be happening to require manufacturers to fix this! Let me explain. I was using the broiler feature for the very 1st time to toast some garlic bread on a cookie sheet in my new 11 day old GE JB258DM2WW electric range when there was a crackling sound, then a bang. The inside oven door glass had shattered in a zillion nuggets! No injuries, since all the glass was inside the oven, however when I opened the door to get the bread out, all the glass fell down onto the oven floor, kitchen floor and oven drawer. I hate to think what may have happened if the glass shattered after when the bread was done. The oven was only on for about 3 minutes. I am working with the retailer to see what to do next. They will send a technician. Really, when so many people have reported this? Why, why, why does this happen?
The retailer promptly arranged to have a technician from General Electric come out.

The product, in the report: Electric stove
My 6-year old GE stove nearly electrocuted me. I set a frying pan on the large front eye when a big electrical surge and flaming spark shot from under the pan tripping the breaker. I cleaned under the eye, checked the wires and could not see a problem. I flipped on the breaker and set the frying pan on the eye and, again, a large arc and surge tripped the breaker. I’ve left the breaker off, because I fear the entire stove might be a shock hazard.

The product, in the report: GE Range top electric 4 burner. Black glass color
This is in concern for a GE electric range top Model # JP5030SJ1SS, Serial # VF72285Q. This electric gas top is very dangerous. If you are using a burner, and happen to set a metal item (spoon, another pot or pan, on top of the range. The range controls sense that something is operating the system and one of two things will happen: the range burner will turn off, which is the lesser of the two evils, or another burner you are not using will turn on. This is very dangerous, as there may be another dish or item resting on the burner that turned itself on. I had a ceramic bowl resting on a burner that I was not using, I set my spoon down on the range top, and unbeknownst to me, a back burner turned itself on. When I grabbed the bowl, which should not have been hot, I burned my hand. Does this need to happen to a child before a recall it placed on this item? I would like a recall to be placed on this GE Range model.

The product, in the report: GE Induction range Model PHS930SLSS
The last week of June my GE Induction range Model PHS930SLSS started to stop working. The burners would turn on or off by themselves, or not come on at all but the oven worked. They sent parts, the repairman came out, took the parts back and told me to unplug the stove every time it did this. Then, the burners stopped working again, and the oven. Well, at least before the oven worked. Have 2 roast ready to put in the oven and it doesn’t work. It cost us $23 for breakfast yesterday and $56 for dinner. And, this is just for one day. We have not had a stove since the last week of June. EXTREMELY UPSET! Read online that GE has a problem with the wiring at the back of the stove that can catch on fire. They replaced parts, and still it has the same problems; so they replaced the stove this week. Used stove yesterday and thought maybe it was me touching wrong buttons, but I wasn’t and I knew it but tried to rationalize the situation. Tried to use right front burner but it did not come on so used left. Yes, I know the pan has to fit the circles and it has to be an induction pan.
Using left front burner, and it would change from low or medium to high and/or back; or shut off completely. I was frying eggs, had it on medium, turned my back without touching anything and it shut off; or the most dangerous was it kept turning the burner sync on by itself and would stick and took several tries to shut off. I believe the technology in it is not perfected or the parts are just defective or it’s just a plain bad product. So, I gave it the benefit of doubt yesterday, but made sure I kept locking it.
This morning, cooking eggs again, it would not really cook on medium so I turned it up, watched it and went back to medium, and turned around, it shut off by itself; turned it back on and the burner sync went back on by itself, so I pushed the burner sync button to make sure whether it was on or off, but it was off. I’m afraid to use the oven. Not sure what will happen. Our house could burn down or our electrical system could blow out. It is not fit for the use intended. 2 months without a stove or oven; food spoiled, had to eat out and can’t afford it. Paid over $2400 and it’s dangerous.
My husband is a veteran that’s had 2 strokes. I do not need this. Others on the internet have had the same problems.

The product, in the report: GE induction free standing range with convection Model PHB920EJES
We have a ge induction range with a flat surface top. It doesn’t have a ridge around the edge. The surface is very slippery and sometimes when placing pots on the back burners or the warming burner, the pots will bump into the pots on the front causing them to slide the pots on the front burners to the edge. Because there isn’t a ledge to stop them I have had them hit me in the stomach. Thankfully I have not had boiling water in them and I have been wearing a thick apron, but it is only a matter of time before someone is injured. I don’t allow my child in the kitchen when something is on the stove, but I am also worried about my dog who is usually at my feet. I have also had pots boil over and had hot water splashing down to the floor because of the lack of a ridge. You can’t lift the lid and stir a pot one-handed. You have to hold the pots as you stir or the pots slide around. It makes for a very dangerous situation. I don’t have one specific day. It’s been happening since we have owned the stove, but we got it right before the shutdowns and couldn’t even get all the broken appliances fixed (the dishwasher was scratched and the vent fan didn’t work after install).

This report involves an electrical shock hazard from a GE built-in oven (Model #JRS06SK2SS) and is the second failure of this unit. I am not the owner but have first-hand knowledge of both incidents. The owner of the home is an elderly woman whose son [REDACTED NAME] is my friend. [REDACTED NAME] contacted me in March of 2019 and asked if I could inspect his mother’s stove after she claimed to be shocked while making contact with it. During my inspection, I measured approximately 120V AC using a voltmeter. I disconnected power to the oven at the breaker and advised my friend to contact GE and to file a complaint with CPSC. I can confirm that GE was contacted but am unsure at the time of this writing whether CPSC was notified. A GE repairman came to the home within a week, replaced some unidentified component on the oven but refused to provide [REDACTED NAME] with any receipt or documentation. The second incident occurred recently and I visited the home on 8/12/20 and measured 113V AC using the same voltmeter. This measurement was made by placing the negative probe on the stainless steel sink and the positive probe on either the stainless trim on the oven door or on one of the stainless screw heads inside the oven at the bottom surface near the door. (picture attached to this record)
THIS IS AN URGENT SAFETY MATTER
I am a former [REDACTED] and would greatly appreciate some follow-up to this matter. I am concerned that other consumers may have already been hurt or killed by this potential defect especially those with pre-existing heart ailments. You can contact me directly or [REDACTED NAME] using the information provided in this report.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Electric Range with Air Fryer Model PSS93BP1TS
So I bought this brand new model stove made by GE, mostly for the whole oven air fryer feature. Special ordered it from Lowe’s, paid $1600.00 for it. It was delivered and installed on 6/13. About three days after I started using it, I noticed a serious design flaw in the touch panel that controls the burners and the entire stove. When cooking, I accidentally dropped a tiny bit of oil on the panel and was terrified to find I then couldn’t turn the burner off. Thought it was a fluke until it happened a few days later when I opened the oven door and some of the steam which came out immediately condensed on the control panel, again rendering it unresponsive. Then I really began to investigate and found that no matter what liquid—oil, spaghetti sauce, water... same results. Even worse, the liquid can change the burner settings when it hits it. So a pot that is on a low simmer can be turned to high if a small bubble bursts and the liquid lands on the screen. Bottom line....cooking is messy and a touch screen control panel that becomes unresponsive OR reacts incorrectly due to a drop of moisture on the screen is a BAD IDEA! Anyone who has ever tried to answer a phone call on their touch screen Phone with a little bit of water on their hands knows exactly what I am describing.
I then called GE customer service on 6/22 and filed a report about a serious safety issue. I was told someone would look into it and get back to me. So as of 7/30, I had yet to receive a call back. I finally called them and was told they would be happy to send a repair man to verify what I was reporting, then try to replace the panel, then if that didn’t fix it, they would consider replacing the whole stove—WITH THE SAME MODEL! I have offered to email them my video showing the issue but no, they want me to go this whole “attempt repair, nope, repair didn’t work, here’s the same stove again” route while continuing to use a dangerous appliance???
So, now since I waited for GE to call me back, I’m was out of my 30 day return window with Lowe’s. GE won’t stand behind their product and admit there is a serious design flaw that will likely lead to someone getting seriously hurt in a cooking fire. The Lowe’s manager, after seeing my video demonstrating the design flaw in the touch control panel, agreed to take the stove back as the product is DANGEROUS! So, I am now filing this complaint now in an effort to ask the CPSC to stop manufacturers from selling stoves with this dangerous and flawed design and to let you know that based upon the questions I was asked today about my concerns, GE does NOT take a customer complaint about a potentially dangerous product seriously unless someone has already suffered a fire or bodily harm.
Can you imagine if a pan of oil catches fire and you can’t even turn the burners off? Or worse, what if your circuit breaker is in the basement and you have to run down two flights of stairs to try and turn the stove off to stop the fire?
The model number is PSS93BP1TS and it is a GE Range with Air Fryer oven.

The heating element of our GE Electric Range (Model JS760SLSS) exploded sending sparks and flames out and burning holes in our wooden floor. A flying part of broken heating element also cracked the glass door on the oven. A repairman said the circuit board on the range was broken. We have had this range less than 2 years and this is second one we have had. The first range broke after a month and was replaced by local appliance company from which we bought it.

The product, in the report: GE Smooth Surface Self-Cleaning Slide-In Electric Range (Stainless Steel). Model # JS645SLSS Serial # TH257342Q Purchased from Lowe’s Oxnard CA on 4/11/2018 Total Payment $984.18 on AMEX Purpose: Kitchen household use
Electric range malfunctioned in early morning of July 7, 2020 when no one was in the kitchen, started self-cleaning cycle, producing heat and smoke enough to set off house smoke alarms. Family members who were sleeping were awakened and consumer called local Fire Department because of unknown consequences and risk of fire. I shut off all electrical circuits in the house. Fire crews were able to remove extremely hot stove from kitchen but had to break drywall behind the stove to make sure nothing was burning or smoldering. Wood and insulation were OK. Stove remains outside but consumer is unable to open the oven door. Inside the house, fire crews had to bring in blower apparatus to help clear the noxious smoke; in fact it took several days for the odor to clear. My great concern is that if no one had been at home, the stove might have continued to heat, in spite of possibly having shut-off fuses, and start a fire in the home, or produce enough heat to activate interior fire sprinklers. This would have ruined all furnishings, books and artwork, personal items and clothing, etc. causing terrible financial ss. A fire in the home would have threatened neighbors in the area, which is a rural and dry Southern California valley that has seen fires destroy homes in the past ([REDACTED], Dec 2017). I will be seeking damages from GE, even though the manufacturer’s warranty was one year only, on the grounds that a manufacturing defect was the likely cause of this incident, and such an incident as this is a danger to personal and property safety and must be disclosed in the public record as a hazardous event. The stove was purchased new, was less than 2 and a half years old, and was maintained in excellent condition and cleanliness.

The product, in the report: GE Self-Cleaning Electric Range
I have a GE electric range model JBP30WA2WW s/n FT208584G I was using the oven to bake a chicken and went outside for a short time. When I came inside the house I heard a beeping sound coming from the kitchen. I found that it was coming from the range. The display on the range showed F2 and the range was very hot. I immediately turned the oven dial to Off. I opened the oven door and felt a blast of very hot air. I looked in the oven and noticed the broiler element was glowing bright red. I know I had the dial set to bake when I put the chicken in the oven. The broiler element continued to glow red even though the oven dial was still in the Off position. I twisted the oven dial around both ways and the broiler element did not go off. The oven was extremely hot. Unable to figure out how to turn off the broiler, I ran to turn off the circuit breaker. It appears the controls failed in the On state instead of an Off state, which is very scary and extremely dangerous. It likely would have caused a fire, if it continued for the full time the chicken was to bake. If I had not been close by, the consequences could have been catastrophic. This range has an automatic start feature and we have used it numerous times, not realizing a failure like this could happen while we are not home. I can’t imagine that we are the first this has happened to in all these years. Has there been a recall on this range that we missed? If not, there should be before this happens to another person.

The product, in the report: GE slide in electric induction stove with convection oven
We own a GE induction range that we bought new about a year and a half ago. Since then, we’ve had relatively minor issues with water boiling over and getting into the electrical components of the stove through a gap in the back of the range top. The stove will go haywire and shut off. Once it dries out, the stove will usually turn back on at unplugging and replugging it back in. The last straw was when we were making dinner using the convection bake feature while using the range top at the same time. A little water boiled over and got into the gap before I could clean it up. Suddenly, the stove started making electrical shock noises, all the lights began flashing and then the rear of the unit actually started on fire and it’s electrical components were destroyed. My home could’ve burned down. Luckily it did not injure us, but it absolutely could have. I can’t believe there’s a product that just allows moisture to seep into it’s electrical components like that. This product is clearly unsafe. We were not using it for unintended purposes. I can’t understand how an electrical fire could happen so easily like this. This is a pretty expensive product, too. Absolutely appalling.

We had a GE electric stove. It was being used to cook food when the oven imploded. Glass went everywhere, it was shot outwards from the appliance. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, although there were a few small cuts. GE is refusing to take any responsibility and is basically telling us in order for them to come and look at it and make sure the warranty does not become invalid due to weather; We need to keep the appliance, with broken glass, in our home; which needless to say is obviously a safety concern as we have 3 small animals and a pregnant woman, which besides that, it is a safety concern anyways! We are receiving no help from where we bought it, GE, or the company GE hired to pick up the inoperable, defective product.

Starting with a cold stove, my wife turned on the front, left electric heating element and the lamp that shows the stovetop is active/warming blew with a loud explosion. Sparks emanated from the lamp fixture/socket about 12” from the stove nearly burning my wife. The fire/sparks were so bright she lost her sight for about 9 minutes. The stove circuit breaker also tripped. The stove top was cold and dry when turning on the stove. I kept pieces of the bulb that blew out of the socket (see attached pictures).
We are concerned for others using this model stove (someone could get seriously burned) and we are concerned about using the other side of the stove and the oven.

The product, in the report: GE Ceramic cooktop slide in stove. Slate Gray Model JS750EF2ES. Serial # RFF227320Q. I do not know the manufactured date as it is not on the label but i bought it new early 2016
We have a slide in GE stove/oven. It’s in our island. The knobs are on the front of the unit since there is no back splash area due to it being in an island. The knobs turn on without any effort. There is a ‘control lock’ button on the control panel, however that only controls a child from changing the temperature of the oven. It does not “lock” the burners. We have no children in the house, thank goodness. On multiple occasions, ourselves, or our guests, have brushed past the stove, or leaned over it to reach something on the counter and turned the burners on without knowing it. We are not careless or reckless people but this has happened multiple times. It has reached the point that we have to leave the knobs off completely. I have been cutting vegetables on a cutting board on the flat top surface and my body has turned on the burner. Completely melted the cutting board to the surface before i realized it was on. I have burned hot pads, cooking utensils, scorched pans, etc on many occasions. The final straw was that some papers that were on the counter, were overhanging the burner (this is a completely flat unit that blends right in with the countertop) and the burner somehow got turned on. I only had one knob on the stove at the time and it got turned on. We came home an hour later to a fire in our house. This is absolutely ridiculous. The knobs should never be able to be turned on that easily. More than a dozen people in our family, or friends have accidentally done it. I know nothing should be on a stove, but a cooktop should not turn on by rubbing against it.

The product, in the report: GE OvenJT3000SF5SS
Purchased a GE Oven, model JT3000SF5SS and a GE Oven, model JS760SL2SS in July last year. The problem is that if I turn them on, the temperature fluctuates wildly and may be anywhere from 250 degrees up to 500 degrees they have replaced parts several times but nothing has helped. I am elderly and I’m afraid to use them because I’m afraid they will catch my house on fire. I truly believe these should be recalled due to their defects and the fact the manufacturer can not repair them.
This is not a new problem. It has been recurring for at least the last 3 months.

Caller is reporting that the burners on the range increased to high temperature that she had set on low while cooking. She stated that in another incident she noticed the same problem but this time she could not turn it down she had to power the range off to prevent a fire.
Caller stated that she contacted the company and they advised her that her unit was no longer under warranty. Caller is concerned that this range could have caused a house fire and that the matter should be investigated for a recall.

CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION To whom It May Concern:
The defective stove burner was out of manufacturer warranty but still under MasterCard’s Extended Warranty. The defective part is called a Switch lnfin. I have conducted a further inquiry as to this burners problem. Much to my dismay, I found some troubling results.
Its seem the burner overheating problem is not all that uncommon! This particular part is used in a number of electric stove models including smooth tops and by several brand manufacturers including the maker of my stove, General Electric! This part has been used for a number of years as well.
This is a serious defect! When the defective burner unexpectedly switches itself to high heat, if not noticed immediately, can and will cause a fire! In my case, had I not been close by, a shallow grease pan would have ignited very quickly!
Kitchen fires are horrible and very dangerous not only to residents but property as well. I find it difficult to believe in this age of rapid technical invention a better design of this part is not possible. I really do not care how it affects these manufacturers bottom line. Customer safety should come FIRST! It is your responsibility to make sure this happens.

Submitter says that a few moments after using the product, flames started to spew from the oven broiler. The broiler burner caught fire. Sparks flew out of the oven and onto the kitchen floor. The product was turned off when this incident occurred.
Caller was able to put the flames out before any significant damage was done to the kitchen. The broiler element burned up and flames went out on there own
Submitter says that if they were not home they believe the whole house would have been burned down. Flames would have stayed in oven had door remained close. GE says this is not unusual when elements burn out and it was not dangerous except that we opened oven door. We were able to have both broiler elements and oven element replaced and oven is now usable.

The product, in the report: GE Electric cooktop, Model JP5030SJ1SS / Serial VF712285Q.
We moved into this home in August 2018. From the first time we used the cooktop, we noticed dangerous issues. Unless cooktop is locked, simply setting an item on the cooktop can cause it to turn on/off or adjust the temperature setting of any of the burners. This has proved to be dangerous on several occasions. I had a dish sitting on the cool cooktop, I set a pot onto the stove to prepare for cooking something at a later time. I went about my business, only to smell something burning. The pot had turned on one of the burners and heated up my dish to the point of making a “crackling” sound, The was extremely hot and now has permanent burn marks on the bottom. I worry this will happen when I am leaving the house and I will not catch it! The controls on this cooktop are easily set off and dangerous. There are similar reviews of this issue on the GE Appliances web page for this item if you were to buy it new. Others have found the same dangerous issue. Model JP5030SJ1SS / Serial VF712285Q.

This report is about a GE JBP67 Radiant Range that I purchased in June 2007. Here is what happened with it at the end of 2018/beginning of 2019: When I turned the rear burners on the stovetop to a low setting, they automatically increased the heat to a high setting (even when the knob was set at “1”). This happened 3 times in the last couple months. It has burned items in pots and pans. Luckily, none of the fires have spread into my house.

I was cooking squash in the oven, and I opened the door to pour more water into the pan. I didn’t realize the pan was empty, so the water started sputtering all over. A few droplets hit the inside glass of the door, and the glass cracked in 2-3 spots. Just a simple line. I walked away to get more oven mitts, and as I did, the inner glass started popping and cracking all over, in to the food and on to the floor. It essentially all cracked into tiny pieces as tempered glass is supposed to, but it did not stay intact, ended up everywhere.

The product, in the report: GE Slate Electric Range The model # is GEBAJB650EFES, serial #HF208883Q
This was the issue sent to GE presidential:
Last night, August 20, 2018 I had boiled some water for noodles turned the burner off and had something cooking in the oven on 350 for approx. 15 min. I had sat down to watch TV while my dinner finished and my husband and I heard a huge pop. I first thought it was what I was cooking in the oven but NO it was the glasstop on my range. The fast burner had popped and there is a small chunk of glass that came out as well as it cracked the entire top.
This range was installed in April 2016 into my new home. I purchased it for $719 along with all the other GE slate appliances, which by the way I have already had to replace the microwave earlier this year.
This absolutely should not have happened. This is a safety issue and makes me think there was something defective in the burner.
The model # is GEBAJB650EFES, serial #HF208883Q
I am not able to go without a range so I had to purchase a new one last night, which I am now held hostage to the GE slate to match all my other appliances so I once again purchased another GE range.
I am asking for some compensation and someone to contact me regarding this issue.

The product, in the report: Adora 5.3 cu. ft. Electric Range with Self-Cleaning Convection Oven in Slate
After about 6 months of use (purchased new), our GE electric oven (model #JB755EJ3ES) began burning everything in just a few minutes of turning the oven on to 350 degrees. An appliance repairman came to look at it under GE’s direction and tested it. He set it to 350 degrees and when he opened the oven to check it with a thermometer, it was already up to 750 degrees and the stove was not showing any error codes. This could have resulted in a fire or at least smoke damage had something been in for a normal baking time. The repairman ordered a new thermostat (I believe) and a new oven control panel, but the control panel was back-ordered for a month. GE customer service [Incident: [REDACTED]] was able to expedite the order (after we had been a month without our oven) and the part was finally installed on 11/27/17.

The product, in the report: electric range
The submitter states that her burners are not working properly and she believes her range poses a fire hazard. She indicated that the burners do not heat at the temperature it is set too and often times the burners remain on a high heat level. The submitter said that all of the burners are having this issue but especially the two larger burners which are the front right burner and the rear left burner. The submitter said the burners shut off but take a while to cool down. The submitter first noticed the issue a few weeks ago.
The submitter is concerned that the burners may turn on by themselves and she plans to contact the firm to inform them about her concerns.
The submitter indicated that her right front burner was repaired approximately 2 years ago because it was having the same issue of heating to different temperatures. The submitter contacted the firm to request the repair.

The product, in the report: Glass-top electric range
I got an electric shock when I touched the front edge of the range. I found that an electrical connector (1/4” pushon spade connector) to one of the heating elements had deteriorated after a long time of overheating and the connector disintegrated. A small pile of ash had accumulated in the stove under the connection from the burned away wire insulation. Then the wire came loose from the element and fell against the metal body of the range ... thereby electifying the entire range. Further inspection found another heating element’s wire creatign anothe rash pile and ready to fail the same way. Then I found out that GE had already recalled a number of their ranges for this same problem ... but not this model. GE says this 2010 range (model JB640D) is out of warranty and not repairable and is only offering to give me a discount if I buy a new range from them. Since this problem is happening two times in this one range and they have a history of similar failures with other models that are constructed the same way, I suspect this will be a big safety concern as this model ages.

Turned on new GE oven (JB250DFWW) to self-cleaning function try to burn off the coatings and “cure” the insulation, etc., as directed. Instructions were to let it self-clean 3-5 hours, but turned it off after approx. 30 minutes because the fumes were unbearable. Now, hours later, it’s still bad, with all windows open and fans running. I have a sore throat from being in the kitchen for half an hour. We called the store and asked them to come pick it up because based on this experience, I have no confidence that the fumes will dissipate easily or quickly. If this kind of out-gassing of the insulation material needs to happen, it should happen at the factory, not in people’s homes.

I purchased a GE slide-in range on 8-22-17 and it was installed on 8-27-17. I used the oven only twice, and on 9-12-17, while I was out shopping, the front door shattered (outside glass panel only; inner panel appears intact), spreading glass over the entire kitchen floor, and area 15 ft by 8 ft. The clear glass broke into small pebbles, but the black glass with the see-through perforations broke into random sized, jagged pieces. It is fortunate that I was not in the kitchen at the time this hapened because I take prescription blood thinner, and in spite of wearing a med-alert alarm, if I suffered a number of cuts, would probably have bled to death before emergency personnel could arrive. I am also grateful that no friends and children were in my home at the time, or they could have suffered serious injuries if they were in the kitchen when the door shattered. I have tried to add the photos I took, but this part of your form does not seem to be working.

The submitter’s wife began preheating the oven and after a few minutes she heard a loud noise. The submitter opened the oven and noticed flames about 3 inches high. The submitter immediately shut off the circuit breaker and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
The submitter contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The firm sent a technician to examine the range on August 6. The technician advised the submitter that the oven and clock control failed and needed to be replaced. The firm sent the submitter two heating elements, at the submitter’s expense, and both parts did not work.
The submitter indicated that he is an electrician and searched online how to troubleshoot the range. The submitter said he soldered the oven and clock control. The submitter then turned on the oven and said the oven turned on without a fire.
The submitter believes the firm is falsely leading consumers about the issues with their products so that consumers are forced to purchase another range.

The product, in the report: GE flattop stove/oven. Model Number: JB640DP1WW
My CE electric stove/oven exploded and there was glass everywhere. It was not In use. The glass panel covering the entire oven door exploded.
There are a lot of complaints on the internet and GE says that a hair line crack in the glass can rupture and explode anytime In the future. Perhaps this Is NOT a good design. The moment these products leave the manufacturing process they are moved, pushed. bumped on their way to the distributors etc. There is a great potential to explode. Now what. I was told by GE that I cannot use the oven without replacing the entire oven door. That means paying for a new door shipping & handling and hiring an appliance technician to install. OR, I can purchase a new stove. All of these options come close to the cost of a new stove. This appliance should have something else breakdown before the glass starts exploding. GE should make It CLEAR to consumers that the design of this glass oven door panel is unsafe and will probably explode and should no longer make this design.

I came home on Feb 14, 2017 to find that the glass on my oven door had shatteted and landed all over the kitchen floor as well as in the dining room. The oven was not in use and had not been used in a while as I don’t have a lot of people to cook for. This could have been catastrophic jad anyone been in the kitchen at the time and especially if it was a child or pet! Afterwards, I read online that the company GE has been aware of this problem with the glass for several years yet they’re stoll selling them. This is of major concern to me so I wish to report it.

Approximately 30 minutes later, the submitter’s daughter heard a loud explosion and noticed that the oven’s outer glass shattered. The submitter’s daughter was not injured from the initial explosion but she stepped on a piece of glass and sustained a small cut on her right foot. The inner and middle glass is still intact. The submitter contacted the firm the same day and informed them of the incident. They arranged for a technician to examine the range and waived the $100 service charge.
There are no prior incidents.
The oven is used five times a week.

A pan of scalding/boiling water exploded into the kitchen over a 12 foot area covering the ceiling, walls, floor and light fixture. It seemed to take forever to boil getting to the small bubble stage, but never poiling. I left the area to attend to some laundry on the other side of the room and while there heard a loud bang. Nothing had fallen so I cautiously went back into the kitchen to inspect where I found water everywhere. There was about an inch left in the pan that had contained a little over quart. The pan an [REDACTED] stainless 2qt. saucepan had not moved on the burner, was not stuck, not damaged and not burned on the bottom. The burner was the small burner on the power boil unit. Anyone in the kitchen or standing over the stove most certainly would have been badly burned. The noise sounded like a bomb going off and was traumatic. I believe a sudden intensity of heat from the burner may have been the problem, the burner ordinarily cycles from higher heat to less heat.

Our contractor came out and retested the outlet, made sure it was grounded, etc. and determined that it was a problem with the stove (he could actually see a loose wire). We ordered a new stove of a different brand it, installed by the same contractor into the same electrical outlet and have had no issues.

The product, in the report: GE slide in, front control electric range. Ceramic glass cooktop.
I had been preparing a gift for a friend and set it on my countertop, partially on the range. I had not used my range that day nor had I used it the day before so I am 100% sure non of the burners were hot. I left my apartment and came back to firetrucks outside and was informed there was a fire in my unit and that all my things were destroyed. When maintenance took me up to my apartment he assured me that I shouldn’t feel bad because this has happened before in the building. He said the ranges are just far too easy to turn on and can be turned on easily without noticing. He stated that the leasing office had been touring a vacant unit and in the course of the tour the oven was turned on. They didn’t tour that unit for a week and upon return discovered the oven had been on high for the entire time. All countertops and cabinets needed to be replaced. These ranges are FAR too easy to turn on. You should never be able to turn on your stove without noticing. Imagine if there were kids or animals that are able to climb on countertops?

I own a GE Profile series electric 30” Slide in Range. On several occasions family members have placed items on the stovetop and very lightly brushed the front control knobs and turning on a burner in the process. I did it for the 3rd time now just yesterday. A light brush across the front facing burner control knobs will activate a burner without your knowledge.

The product, in the report: GE Electric Smooth Top Slide in Range
The knobs on my GE Electric Range Serial Number JS750DF3WW turn very easily. They are located on the front of the range. They are supposed to unlock by pressing down and turning. They do not “lock” and can easily be turned. There is a very, very slight click to turn. This has happened many times where I just bump them and they are turned on. I have been extremely careful not to place anything on the stove when I am not cooking. Today, I was excited to get a kitchen faucet delivered. It was a large box and I inadvertently placed it on the stove to open it. I took out the faucet and then smelled something burning. The knob had shifted to High and the box was on fire. I was very fortunate to grab it and toss it out the front door. When I came back I found both the front and the back burner on. As this was not the first time, I am very concerned. I have wanted to write a review on Home Depot’s web site and warn people - especially families with small children. This stove is a hazard.

So I pulled the stove out and unplugged it ! The oven was extremely hot so I attempted to open the door to let the heat out and it would not open and the lock would not release, which resulted in the oven glass to crack!

(1/22/16) The submitter’s mother set the oven to preheat at 350 degrees. Approximately five minutes later the submitter’s mother opened the oven door to put the fish inside when the door fell and hit the submitter’s mother on the left leg. The submitter noticed that the oven door had completely detached from the range. The submitter’s mother sustained a cut on her left leg. The submitter assisted her mother to the couch and turned off the oven.
(1/23/16 Approximately) The submitter’s mother went to a local urgent care because her leg was swollen. The submitter’s mother did not require stitches but was prescribed medication for the injury. The submitter indicated that her mother’s leg was bruised and infected.
The submitter’s mother has also visited an orthopedic for treatment.
(1/24/16 Approximately) The submitter contacted the firm to inform them about the incident (Case # [REDACTED]). The submitter was referred to the insurance department. The submitter indicated that [REDACTED] ([REDACTED]; 888-456-7445 ext. [REDACTED]) has been handling her mother’s case. The submitter also indicated that the firm will assist with some of her mother’s medical expenses.
The submitter also asked the firm to repair the range and on 2/26/16 a technician was sent to her mother’s home to inspect the range.
A few days later the submitter spoke with a firm Rep. (name unknown) who advised the submitter that the parts and repairs would cost $400. The submitter was also informed that the technician noted in his inspection report that the door could not have accidently detached from the range and injured the submitter’s mother. The submitter found this absurd and is aware of similar consumer complaints with GE ranges.
The range is used about 4 times a week.
The range has a double door one part hinged to the stove, the other, front panel is made of glass and stainless steal that is the part that detached and as she opened the door it detached at a 45 degree angle and hit her left leg and it is quite heavy the front panel and it was attached with apoxy from the factory not screws to make it safe.
The submitter’s Mother has been to Urgent care once when she first got hurt and then to her primary care doctor 7 or 8 times because her leg got infected and it took 4 to 5 visits to stop the infection. She still has a knot in her leg & its painful to the touch.
[REDACTED] at [REDACTED] has been working with [REDACTED her Mothers Insurance and [REDACTED] to take care of the Insurance part but the submitter’s Mother [REDACTED} has had to pay a lot of copays and her medication herself and now she has turned it over to [REDACTED] Secondary Payer Recovery. Contractor’s, her Mom has not been reimbursed for anything to date May 5th 2016 [REDACTED] at [REDACTED] [REDACTED] turned it all over to [REDACTED] [REDACTED][REDACTED] are her Moms agent to investigation and negotiation, representing her in her liability clame only not lawyers Clame #[REDACTED]. This has been a nightmare on the submitters with doctors and the out of pocket money & paperwork and broken oven. Google says this has happened to a lot of people but only hurt one & almost fell on a baby. Companies buy thease ovens stoves & put there lable on them.

The product, in the report: Ceramic Glasstop Range
This incident involves a General Electric ceramic glass top stove. The stoves right front burner got stuck and did not shut down when the burner was turned off. There was three burners and the oven used that night. I cooked peas, corn, greens and a salisbury steak dinner. The three burners were all set at 2, enough just to warm the food and the oven was set at 350. All were turned off once finished, except it seems the right front burner stayed on after it was switch off. It appeared to have stayed on with out my knowledge until it woke me up from chocking on the toxic smoke. I had my grandchildren all day that day and was exhausted once they left and sat day to eat my dinner and never got to because I fell asleep sitting up on the sofa. Had I went to bed the disaster would have been deadly. I woke up choking and none of the 7 smoke detectors in the rental house ever went off. I ran to the kitchen in the dark. The smoke was so thick I could not see to even retrieve or find my cell phone to call 911 and it was after 11 pm. My only alternative was to move the stove to unplug it. There was no other way to get to it to go off. It took me several attempts to get it to even budge, in the process I pulled with all I had (people in desperation can sometimes find more strength then they would normally have) mind you I am handicapped and only have the use of one hand. In those attempts to move the stove with all the force I had I fell into the cabinet and broke my pelvis the first time. The second attempted I made I fell back again and crushed a disk in my back that also crushed a nerve along with it and I am still recovering painfully from that. With two more attempts I was able to move it. I am in and have been in agony ever since that night. I am only 5’2 and weigh only a hundred and fifteen pounds. Upon getting in behind the stove and unplugging it I also burnt my right shoulder by climbing behind the stove and brushing against the melted microwave and my arm was bunt as well. The arm now has a burnt scar that isn’t going away. After getting it off I managed to practically crawl out the back door to the patio where I passed out. I awoke around 7 am and was having difficulty breathing and walking. Once I contacted my landlord and GE, she then contacted her insurance company and they came and got the stove and microwave, but it would take me harassing and demanding answers for them all to initiate a proper professional investigation and inspection of both appliances. This happened July 3rd 2015 and they did not inspect the stove until December 16th. Their inspection claims it was a fire and it was from the right back burner. However it was not, it involved the right front burner. The evidence proves their wrong. First off the burn pattern of the knobs. They claim the knob from the right front burner (that caused the melt down) was off, that is true it was. They claim the back right burner knob was set to medium for which that night it was set at two. But it was off as well to where they claim it wasn’t, however if it had been on medium (it wasn’t) but if it had the melting pattern would have been on the opposite side of the knob but it wasn’t... it melted in the off position. And again if it had been on 2 it would not have been hot enough to do the damage it did and the underpinning and back of the microwave under that burner would have been severely damaged, but it was not damaged at all proving it COULD NOT of been the back burner as they claimed. Secondly, the microwave melted on the front right corner directly under the right front burner and the melting part of the microwave melted directly into the pan of peas. It did not melt directly on the cook top or it would caught fire. Evidence proves and the inspection should have proved the right front and back burner knobs were off. Also had it been a fire as they are claiming the cabinets would have burned. The front right part of the microwave that melted was attached to the cabinets and so snug you couldn’t even slide a piece of paper between the two of them. The photos, the stove knobs melting patterns and the microwave right front melting pattern and my injuries prove their investigation was flawed, wrong and sabotaged. When the stove was first looked at, it was by a company called Kid Gloves, its a restoration company. They could have possibly damaged critical evidence. I threw a fit in late July to have it inspected by a professional with fires and an electrical expert. It took GE and the insurance company 5 more months before they would accomplish that. It seems as well that I cant get a straight answer as to where is the microwave? It is a critical piece of evidence

The product, in the report: GE Single oven, stainless steel, glass top, electric model JB690SFSS.
12-21-15 8:00 am
I bought a new GE. Model JB690SFSS Glass top electric range from Home Depot on 8-7-15. I didn’t start using the oven until the end of October because of an extremely hot summer. The first time I used it to cook a baked potato at 425 degrees I noticed a strong smell emanating from the oven into the kitchen, living room and entrance way to the house. I used it approximately 15 times with the same result. I called GE Warranty service on 12-7-15 and they scheduled an appointment for me with Fred’s Appliance for 12-15-15. Fred;s technician came out at 1200;pm and looked the range over and could not find the source of the noxious odors coming from the range. He called GE tech support and they recommended running the self clean as this would burn away the odors source. Following the advice we had been given I put the oven on self clean and left my home returning at 8 pm that night. The entire house was filled with highly pungent, eye and lung burning fumes! I opened several windows and left my home after gathering a few things to stay overnight at a friends. I came back the next day and the fumes were over powering. I opened up all windows and doors and left my home for 4 hours. The outside temperature was 32 degrees! After making more calls to GE I had another appointment from Fred’s on 12-18-15. The tech again could find no obvious defects although he did say the range smelled bad. Starting Friday, 12-18-15, at 1 pm, I continuously ran an ozone generator/deodorizer for 48 hours. Sunday at 1 pm I disconnected the ozone generator, opened all doors /windows and vented the house for four hours. I came back at 7;30 am this morning 12-21-15 and the home is just as noxious and overpowering as when I began this de-fumigation process. Please help! I don’t know how to get rid of this horrible smell!
