The product, in the report: Frigidaire Side by Side Refrigerator
Electrolux Home Products - Frigidaire side by side refrigerator - Ice maker switch in the off position caught fire. Refrigerator was plugged in and running. Ice maker was off. Ice maker switch caught fire and created enough pressure to open the freezer door. The fire set off the smoke detectors at the premises which set off fire relay on the alarm system. The fire department was dispatched and arrived without access to the interior of the home. There were no occupants present at the time of the incident. The fire department could not detect any problem from the exterior of the home and left the scene. The circuit breaker that supplies the refrigerator power tripped and prevented the electrical switch from burning any further.

Model FFHS2611LWMA Frigidaire Refrigerator icemaker electrocutes my wife thru the on off arm of th ice maker. I used a [Redacted] multimeter to test for voltage and I got a reading of 120 Volts on the arm of the ice maker. I immediately turned off the breaker to the refrigerator and took the ice maker out. I was able to achieve continuity thru the power wire and the ice maker arm. I will keep this product in my possession for inspection by you guys.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator / freezer. About 18 cubic foot model. Freezer on top.
Frigidaire refrigerator / freezer model FRT18B4AW6 (serial # BA30429784) produced a flame and very bad odor when cycling on. Discovery process: We were unable to identify the bad odor in home, so called fire department thinking it could be start of electrical fire. Firemen traced source of odor to 15 year old refrigerator in basement. We moved refrigerator away from wall, and saw flame at connection to compressor as it cycled on. Unplugged immediately. Back and bottom of refrigerator were clean and free from debris. Firemen said we were extremely lucky to discover this problem as it could have caused extensive property damage and possibly death.
Called manufacturer (Electrolux) the following morning to report the concern. CSR was indifferent toward my report of product being a fire hazard, and only suggested I call a repair service. Asked to speak to supervisor and tech support, and CSR said I was not allowed to speak with them....only repair technicians are permitted to talk with their tech support team. Really disappointing that Electrolux has such a casual attitude toward consumer safety.
As a side note, refrigerator / freezer provided 15 years of reliable performance, and both sections were still holding set temperatures as the problem developed. I do not expect a product like this to last forever, but never imagined it could fail in such an unsafe manner. To be more precise, it actually became very unsafe while it was still running. Refrigerator has since been replaced.

The product, in the report: Fridge
At 10 am the fridge made two sharp electrical short sounds and then smoke poured out of the bottom of the fridge. My husband ran into the kitchen to turn off the breaker and saw active flames from under the fridge. He pulled it out rapidly and was able to blow out the fire. He then disassembled the back of the fridge to find where the flames were coming from. He noted they originated from the side of the compressor. He plugged it in once more to confirm and it immediately lit on fire again. We then got a new fridge.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire BFHS2611LM1 refrigerator with side freezer ice-maker and water dispenser.
I have a Frigidaire BFHS2611LM1 refrigerator. The bulb had recently gone out and when I went to replace it noticed the bulb had burned a hole into the ceiling of the refrigerator and into the insulation. The hole was as wide as the bulb charred and rimmed with hardened dripping plastic. The insulation was burnt. My concern was not only the future integrity of the unit, but also the danger of a house fire and toxic smoke inhalation.
When I checked on the internet I was shocked to find that many others were experiencing the same product failure and that Frigidaire (Electrolux) refused to accept any responsibility for their design flaw. A mistake that not only creates a deficient product, but also poses a major safety risk.

The product, in the report: 26-cu ft Side-by-Side Refrigerator Single Ice Maker (Easycare) Item #: 488403 Model #: FFHS2611PF $958.62
On Saturday, December 16th 2017 our brand new 26-cu ft Side-by-Side Refrigerator Single Ice Maker (Easycare) Item #: 488403 Model #: FFHS2611PF purchased on 05/07/16 capacitor spontaneously caught fire. Was told there was nothing able to be done to resolve our issue and treated as if it were no big deal. Our house almost burned down, we could have lost our lives. Now we’re out of a $1000 brand new refrigerator. The only option they offered would be to schedule a repair man to come check for $50 cash on sight. 6 months after our 1 year warentee, our faulty fridge catches fire, almost burns our house down and kills us all... and we have to pay to have a repair man come see what needs to be replaced (which I will have to pay for) upon further researched I learned this is a fairly common problem with this exact model of refrigerator, yet they are still being manufactured and sold. There needs to be a recall on this product and a class action lawsuit to prevent this from happening to other customers and to reimburse others who have suffered damages from this product with no resolution in the past.

The product, in the report: Fridgidaire Refrigerator
I have a refrigerator that is 7 years old. Today the light bulb died. My husband went to go change it. The light bulb burned the inside liner of my fridge. This could have caused a fire. I now have a hole about thee size of a half dollar inside my fridge. I called customer service and they said there was nothing they could do since it’s out of warranty. I said my fridge will not work right with a hole in the liner, not to mention this could have cause a fire. He said did it cause a fire or any damage to your home? I said no. He said well then there is nothing we can do. I mean are you kidding me?! How is this even normal?! This is the hole inside my fridge from the top of the lightbulb.

The product, in the report: White Frigidaire fridge with freezer above
We bought a Fridgidaire Fridge on 4/25/16. Today I was washing the lowest glass shelf that has the vegetable and fruit drawers underneath it. I took the glass shelf out of the fridge and was washing it in the sink in warm soapy water. The glass shelf exploded. I use the word exploded because that is exactly what happened. It shattered in thousands of tiny pieces in the sink, countertops, and floor. I am so thankful I had shoes on and that no children were around. I’m 43 years old and have washed glass shelves from fridges many, many times and never has a shelf shattered on me. This glass shelf is not safe to be in a fridge. It’s dangerous.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire side by side chrome finish with ice maker
A week ago Saturday my daugther called and said something in the house is on fire. She reported thick clouds of smoke so I turn around head back home. I unplugged all the sockets in the house except for my kitchen. I could still see the clouds of smoke rising to the ceiling. So we heard this clicking noise and could see flames coming from behind the fridge. I pulled the fridge away from the wall and unplugged it. The flame went down. I called my fire dept to make sure there was no fire inside my calls. Thank God someone was home. I called Frigidaire that next monday. The rep stated there was no recall or complaints with model FFHS622MSJ

The product, in the report: black Frigidaire Side-By-Side refrigerator Lot#: 00243398
We purchased a Frigidaire (model: FFHB2740PE5A) on April 5, 2015 brand new from Lowes. A couple nights ago, the Frigidaire burst into flames causing extensive fire damage to the property we rent. Fortunately, we were awake at the time and were able to call 9-1-1 to get assistance. Had we been sleeping or not noticed the flames it would have spread very quickly.
I’ve read on multiple websites that other consumers have had similar problems with the components of unit overheating, sparking or catching fire. Yet, I have not seen a recall. Additionally, when Frigidaire was contacted they stated the unit was outside of the one year warranty they offer and therefore had no obligation in this incident.

My husband smelled something similar to burning plastic and smoke spread throughout the kitchen. We pulled the fridge out and discovered this is where the smell was originating. While we were looking at the back of the fridge, the back wires sparked and a fire started.

The product, in the report: Brushed stainless steel side-by-side fridge with water dispenser.
Product: Fridgadaire Refridgerator Model No. LFUS2613LF3; Serial No. 4A11617670 Purchased on 10/8/2011.
I opened my fridge last week (8/11/17) to find that the light bulb was out. This was the original light bulb. When I stuck my head inside the fridge to remove the bulb, I found that the bulb had completely melted through the ceiling of the fridge! The bulb was completely intact, but the heat from it melted the fridge! I am very concerned about this, because it could have started a fire! I have pictures to support this occurrence. I have emailed Fridgadaire, but have not received a response. When I searched online to see if others have reported similar instances, I found there were many people with the same complaints! Apparently, Fridgadaire will not assume responsibility for this, and will replace the parts (part of the ceiling?) but the consumer (me!) will have to pay for a licensed Fridgadaire repair person to come out and fix it. What?!? This is a huge safety concern, and could have started a fire!

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Gallery side by side refrigerator/freezer, stainless steel, model # PLRS267ZAB6
Frigidaire Gallery side by side refrigerator/freezer, model PLRS267AZ B6 purchased 6/5/2002. Refrigerator side had stopped cooling recently (temperature regulation was off). Unusual noises had been noticed for a few weeks. While cleaning out the refrigerator, it was found that plastic trim from the backside of the bottom glass tray had become dislodged and fallen into an opening in the left side of the refrigerator (left side when facing the refrigerator) towards the bottom of the box. This opening is designed to facilitate airflow from the freezer which cools the refrigerator side. Because all the drawers and shelf items were in the refrigerator, this hole and the trim that fell into it could not be seen until we began cleaning. It was found that the end of the trim was melted and charred so it may have come in contact with electronics in the refrigerator or the condenser fan. This is clearly a fire hazard and we are fortunate the refrigerator did not catch on fire. This could certainly explain why the refrigerator side of the unit was not cooling properly. While this is probably a rare occurrence, it still seems that this vent/hole should have had some kind of screen over it to prevent things falling into it. What if a jar or other container had fallen in? Or liquids leaked into it? Either way, it was a very dangerous situation that could have led to property damage or loss of life due to fire.

Purchased new Frigidaire Gallery Refrigerator Model FGHI2164QF Delivered Fri May 12 2017. Refrigerator will not cool below 40 degrees even on coldest setting. Technician has come out three times and claims to have replaced tempature and thermostate controls. Nothing has fixed the problem.
Have had to throw away food. Got sick because of food spoilage due to tempatures exceeding 40 degrees. The only way i found out tep goes abouve 40 was a thermometor that records low/high temp range.
This product is dangerous becasue one cannot tell the temperature gets high enough to spoil food without using a thermomater that shows tempature ranges.
The retailer has been great tryng to fix the problem, but it is a manufactuting defect and Frigidaire should be forced to recall the product and fix it right.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire side by side
I purchased a Frigidaire refrigerator, new, from a local store and one night it began smoking and ignited. This was a small fire on the backside near the bottom. I discovered later that it was an electrical component (relay box?) that connected to the side of the compressor. It appears that there is a white plastic tube that carries water to the ice maker and water in the door. This tube was fine but any liquid spilled in the refrigerator could (and apparently did) travel down the tube and drip on the relay box causing it to short out and catch fire. I have pictures showing the tube and components, a picture of the relay box that caught fire, a picture of the model and serial number information, and I still have the physical part that caught fire. I contacted the manufacturer and they didn’t express much interest in the problem. What really bothered me was that it just kept burning and if we were asleep at the time I wonder how far this could have escalated.

The refrigerator light burned out and as I replaced it, I discovered that the plastic had been burnt and melted about the bulb. The bulb used was a 40 watt appliance bulb and the max rating is 40W. I could not believe it. I went online with Frigidaire and got no satisfaction, They told me I could install a shield but the refrigerator is too old for them to do anything. A shield is one thing, but I can’t understand how this issue could be overlooked! An issue like this should not happen. How does a small wattage bulb get so hot that it melts the plastic? However, I tried explaining THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE and it’s obviously a design flaw but it fell on deaf ears. After doing some research, I have found others with the same issue. I would attach pictures if I could.

My ice maker in my Frigidaire freezer stopped working and seemed to be jammed with ice - I reached in to remove some ice and slide out the ice bin and burned my right hand badly when it touched the metal part where the ice falls. It blistered and now a month later the last of the scabs are healing and I have a 3” scar down my hand. I had to be out of town for work but now that I am back I called Frigidaire customer service # on the inside of the unit and the customer service put me on hold and came back said she did see other complaints about this same thing on my model. I left her all my info and she said thank you for reporting. I asked if they would send someone out to fix it since it seemed very dangerous and I had not turned it back on since the burn and she said at my cost I could do that but she had looked on CPSC and they were not doing a recall so not their issue. I was surprised they wouldn’t want to help handle it since they have other reports of the same thing and nothing should be that hot in a freezer. I figure my only other resort is to file a report here so that other consumers might be warned it is an issue.

We have a side by side Frigidaire Refrigerator Model #GLRS642EBA refrigerator that we purchased new in 2008 or 2009. We noticed a strong odor coming from the refrigerator side. The ice also tasted funny. We replaced the water filter and completely emptied both the freezer and refrigerator. We could still smell the odor. We washed everything down with baking soda and water per the owner manual and still could smell the odor. My husband then looked inside the refrigerator and noticed that the light bulb in the ceiling had burned a big hole in the roof of the ceiling. It was a 40 W appliance bulb as per manual and it was burned into the ceiling as well. We cannot get the smell out of the refrigerator. The hole goes clear through the insulation. We have been sick as a family makes me wonder if it not from drinking ice with the fumes of burnt plastic.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire gallery stainless steel French door refrigerator
We have a frigidaire gallery stainless steel French door refrigerator with water/ice dispenser on the door. The underside of the front panel of the water/ice dispenser is razor sharp. In a freak accident my 11 month old severely cut 3 of his fingers grabbing onto it while daddy was holding him. We rushed to the emergency room and are now having to see a plastic surgeon for care to determine the extent of the damage.
This truly was a freak accident and could’ve happened to anyone. Consumers should be careful when cleaning the area to not cut themselves. Frigidaire should put a cover of sorts on the underside of the panel. My parents have the same fridge in side by side and their panel is plastic.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 26.7 CF French Door Refirgerator with ice maker FFHB2740PE
Our 3 year old Frigidaire refirgerator has always had issues with the internal ice maker. Recently, my son and wife ingested styrofoam and small plastic pieces found afterward in their ice. This is a health risk and I have saved the relevant pieces. When I notified the manufacturer via email, here was their response: “I am truly sorry that you’re having a problem with your ice maker. There has not been a recall on the model or problem that you described. Your appliance was covered under warranty for one year from the date of purchase. However, the warranty ended in December of 2014 based upon the date that was registered.
A service appointment would be required to determine what parts will need to be replaced. I can assist you by providing you with a 20% discount off the parts that are required for the repair. The parts discount can only be processed through our company after you have the diagnosis completed. If medical attention is required for your family, please let me know.
Please let me know if you have additional concerns.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED] Correspondence Specialist
I would have expected them to show more concern over a potential choke hazard or worse since the styrofoam pieces were small and the plastic pieces have sharp edges.

They delivered it to me on December 26, 2016.
The reason I’m writing is that there is a 40 W lightbulb in the fridge but there is no protectI’ve cover on that lightbulb.
The bulb he heats up very high temperatures and also it is made of glass. It is right in the middle of the fridge and someone could get BURNED, CUT or ELECTROCUTED.
I called up the manufacture Frigidaire on Friday, December 30 at 3 PM Eastern time. I spoke with their customer service rep at 706-860-4110.
Astonishingly she says that she does not show that this fridge even has a cover for that glass light bulb. She says from what she can tell this model does not have that cover at all
I want to report this because it’s very unsafe this fridges are being sold all over the country and somebody could get hurt very seriously

The product, in the report: Black Frigidaire Refrigerator - Model # FFHS2622MB3 Side by side freezer/fridge with water and icemaker
Frigidaire refrigerator appliance started on fire!!! Please check your appliances. I would like to get a message out about Frigidaire appliances and a complaint about Frigidaire company in general. My Frigidaire fridge is only 3 years old and it started on Fire. Within 30 seconds there was smoke and flames coming from inside the fridge out of nowhere. Luckily we were home AND in the kitchen when it started because our house would have went up in flames in a matter of minutes. We called Frigidaire to report this and they didn’t care. They said it is out of warranty and WE would need to pay for someone to come out and look at it to have it fixed and pay for parts. I wouldn’t get this fixed or trust it EVER again. Wouldn’t you think they would want to know why their appliance just started on fire? out of NOWHERE! being only 3 years old? Nope. they said it was out of warranty so we would have to pay. Which I feel like I should not! and Frigidaire was ok with hanging up the phone, knowing their brand appliance started on fire, knowing that this could happen to someone else and burn someone else’s house down, and they were OK with doing NOTHING about it. They won’t even report it without a service call that I would have to pay for. I have a 16 month old and we were flat out lucky. I do NOT want someone to lose their home or get hurt. That is how bad this fire was. and Frigidaire didn’t care. I wanted to reach out to every outlet I can to report this, and maybe it can save a life.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator stainless steel model #FGHB2844LF5
We purchased our Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator model#FGHB2844LF5 in 2011. On October 24,2016, the bulbs in the back of the refrigerator melted the plastic and wiring controlling the interface that in turn controls the lighting, water and ice. Fortunately, the lighting no longer working prevented the refrigerator from catching fire as we slept in our beds. Upon further research we found that other consumers were not as fortunate as their units caught on fire. We contacted the manufacturer and they did not seem concerned. They further stated they had not heard of this issue occurring with other consumers. However, with just minutes of research on the Consumer Reports website we found numerous reviews where consumers had the same problem with their refrigerator. My husband and I don’t have children so our refrigerator is not left open for extended periods of time as was suggested by the manufacturer.
Due to their lack of concern and their inability to stand by their product, we will never purchase another Frigidaire product.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire refridgerator Model#LFHB2741PFAA Serial#4A55015726
Hello,
Frigidaire french door refrigerator.
The ice maker is located in the refrigerator compartment and is separated from the cool side with a foam strip. The strip allows moist aire to enter the freezing side and build up ice on the parts and pieces. This stops the fans from moving and coats the electors and wiring in ice. It causes ice to melt out of the door creating the potential for mold. When thawed the ice allows water to enter electrical portions of the appliance.
Frigidaire as attempted a repair on this unit and failed. They replaced the last until but refuse to take this one back.
I am concerned for my health and safety with the defective and hazardous appliance in our home.

Frigidaire Refrigerator caught fire
We have (had) a Frigidaire Refrigerator. It was less than 2 years old. On 9/4/16, it started making crackling noises, then sparks came out from behind the unit, followed by a lot of smoke. Then, it caught fire. The only quick way for me to shut it down was to trip the switch on the circuit breaker.
The model number is FFHS2313L86, serial # 4A23301045. BTW, Electrolux that owns Frigidaire has said that they reuse serial numbers, so tracing our specific unit would be difficult.
After some online searching, we found many complaints about not only their refrigerators, but their dishwashers as well, of which, we have one of those as well. They both came with the house we bout not even a year ago.
You would think that with all of these complaints about the same dangerous defects, that either Electrolux would have recalled these appliances, or at least helped their customers with the high costs of the damages. Also, think about if no one was home when these fires started, peoples’ entire houses with all of their belongings, plus any animals that might be in the house - all gone and dead.
This is outrageous that a company gets away with an obvious flaw/ defect in so many of their products, and top it off with the bad customer service that so many people have reported, it’s amazing this isn’t making National news.

I was home with my children yesterday when smoke started billowing out of my refrigerator. I could smell the electric burn of some part of the appliance. The refrigerator is only three years old to the month, after having a repair man out he said the compressor starter burned out and that’s what the electric fire smell was and what causes the smoke. My refrigerator is a Frigidaire, serial number 4A32216616. It is a side by side, model number FFHS2611LW7.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Refrigerator with Dutch Doors and bottom freezer drawer, in stainless steel finish.
A Frigidaire refrigerator, less than 5 years old, has developed a short in its wiring harness that causes it to trip the Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor receptacle it is plugged into. The Frigidaire authorized repair technician says it is a short in the internal wiring harness, which is not accessible without disassembling the fridge beyond what was intended for service. He and I believe the only way for such a short to occur in a fridge that never moves is if the wiring harness was improperly installed when the refrigerator was built -- a latent manufacturing defect. But more importantly, the fact that the short is tripping the GFCI receptacle indicates that, by definition, the fridge currently has a potentially lethal ground fault. If the fridge was not connected to a GFI -- and there is no electrical code requirement that for a fridge to be GFI protected -- if someone touched the metal cabinet of the fridge while stepping in a puddle barefoot, or reaching into a sink full of water, that person WILL receive a shock, and there is a very real statistical likelihood that that person would die. I have notified Frigidaire customer service to the highest level I could as a consumer, and the appliance tech has notified Frigidaire through his channels as well. They don’t seem to care. -- Model # LGHN2844MF0 -- Serial # 4A12115256 -- Purchased at Lowe’s in Concord, NH on 9/4/2011. Appliance Repair Company is North Country Appliance Service (603) 787-6677. Frigidaire refrigerator/freezer caught on fire during the night. We woke up to soot covering both the fridge and freezer and a terrible smell of burnt plastic and chemicals. Frigidaire unfortunately is not interested in making this right or even taking responsibility since the fridge is outside of their one-year warranty. The fridge is less than 5 years old. According to a repair technician who came out to diagnose where the fire started for insurance purposes, the unit was “found burned in freezer are. Fire started in freezer from defrost heater.”

The consumer indicates that she started to bump her head with the refrigerator’s freezer’s handle approximately one week after she purchased the unit. The consumer states that the handle has very sharp edges and thus she gets hematomas in her head when she bumps into it.
05/30/2016 - The consumer states that her mother bumped her head as well and also received a hematoma is life threatening due to being on blood thinners and nature of impact of the sharp handle.
05/31/2016 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to informed her that they have a smooth-edge handle that she could purchase for forty-eight dollars, but the handle is not accessible because the access is under insulation in the side of refrigerator door, none the less.
The consumer plans on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days, having no other means.

An electrical wiring problem started a fire inside of the freezer compartment. The area in the freezer appeared to involve the wire for the interior light. By the time I realized what the problem was, the rear interior portion of the freezer had burned and melted causing the light to dangle. The fire filled our kitchen with toxic smoke. The fridge was on a dedicated outlet so I was able to shut the power off to the unit quickly.

Purchased Frigidaire Gallery in October of 2011. Noticed today two burn marks in ceiling of fridge. They were obviously caused by the two bulbs below it, which are still the originals. I called Frigidaire, but there was no record of this issue, so I was referred to a local repairman. This is so obviously a product defect, and a danger because I have read of other consumers that had actual fire in their fridges due to this. Very unsafe! Frigidaire needs to be held responsible for this issue.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire side by side refrigerator with water and ice dispenser. Stainless Steel.
I purchased on January 23, 2014 a Frigidaire side by side stainless steel refrigerator. In march 2014 my ice maker started having problems. First it started dispensing crushed and whole ice then, it started shooting ice all over the place both whole and crushed ice. Then the ice maker stopped working.
Several times Frigidaire sent someone to repair the ice maker replacing the ice maker 2 times, until the refrigerator was replaced September 2014.
New refrigerator had problems again with the ice maker January 2015. Again August 2015. I contacted Frigidaire August, September and October 2015. I was told that I had to call Lowes since they hold the extended warranty.
January 2016 I contacted Lowes Extended Warranty. The ice maker is not working and there is snow in the freezer.
January 15, 2016 Lowes repair man said the ice maker needed replacing and that the gasket around where the ice comes out is not sealed both need replacing. As of January 26, 2016 I have not heard from the repairman and the ice maker and seal have not been repaired.
January 26, 2016 I contacted Frigidaire about a the same issue regarding the ice maker and wanted them to replace with another brand or to refund me for this refrigerator.
The service rep said that Frigidaire is not involved anymore that it is Lowes problem now and that I have to deal with Lowes.
I contacted Lowes and spoke with [REDACTED] who said that I needed to contact Service Advantage Warranty for Lowes. [REDACTED] also said maybe I could request a buyout.
I contacted service advantage warranty I spoke with [REDACTED] (supervisor) I explained the situation in detail from the day that I purchased this refrigerator then [REDACTED] told me that I had to have 3 completed repairs involving the same issue, and that I have only had 2. [REDACTED] also told me that if I called for said repairs within the same 30 day period that it would only be counted as 1 call.
I told [REDACTED] that since January 23, 2014 I have had 2 refrigerators and 4 ice makers since I have purchased this refrigerator it has been non stop issues with this ice maker flinging ice every where and the ice maker not working right.. I have had guests sitting 10 feet from the refrigerator and they are getting hit with ice. I have been hit in the face between the eyes with ice. My 6 yr old great niece had a piece of whole ice fly by her face, an inch closer and my niece would have gotten the chunk of ice right into her eye. The dog has been hit with ice.
I have been telling Frigidaire and now Lowes that this has been going on since I purchased this refrigerator in 2014.
I told [REDACTED] that I would be making a complaint to the right entity to get this situation resolved.

While drinking some water the evening of12/19 I had a sharp piece of plastic cut my lip. I discovered later that my Frigidaire ice maker part had come apart and was being ground up with the ice. I had called Frigidaire customer service back in October to report styrofoam in the ice but the representative claimed there are no parts in the ice maker with styrofoam. But after taking out the tray in the top front in a small opening there is styrofoam that is for insulation. As the trey fills full of ice it will attach to the styrofoam and get pulled down when ice is dispensed. I am very dissatisfied with the reports I have made with my Frigidaire ice maker only to be offered to purchase an extended warranty when this is evidently a defect in the design of the unit and safety concern.

The product, in the report: side by side refrigerator with freezer at the bottom
(11/14/2015) The consumer noticed that the light was not working. He removed the light cover and saw that there were two holes burnt in the plastic above the lights.
The consumer replaced the bulb and did a video of the inside of the refrigerator with the door closed. He wanted to see why the plastic had burned. When he looked at the video, he discovered that the light inside of the unit did not go out when the door was closed.
The submitter added:
We purchased Frigidaire kitchen products, including a refrigerator on July 27, 2011, in anticipation of our home under construction. We moved into the home on November 1, 2011.
On Saturday, November 14, 2015, my wife informed me that the lights were not on in the upper area of the refrigerator. As I was removing the bulbs, we realized that a hole had been burned through the plastic liner above the bulbs. The next day, our son was visiting and placed his recording device into the refrigerator, and closed the door. After viewing the video from inside the storage area, it was obvious that the light stayed on while the door was shut.
I visited the service department [REDACTED] at Karl’s on Monday, November 16, and he suggested that the problem was a malfunctioning light switch.
Our concern is of the possible carcinogens that could be present and the possible fire danger created by the heat of the bulbs in burning through the plastic liner.
The hole on the left side, (as you are facing into the refrigerator), is about the size of a silver dollar, and the hole on the right side is about the size of a half dollar.
On November 18, 2015, a service technician from Karl’s checked the refrigerator and determined that a shield kit, including a new panel was needed.

The consumer stated that the two bottom shelves are the ones that she has had problems with falling out.
The consumer contacted Sears about the issue.
The consumer stated that a technician came out three times. The first two times they were unable to repair the unit. The third time, the technician (around June/July) moved the shelves higher and used a heavier screw.
The consumer stated that in Oct 2015 the shelves came out again.
The technician informed the consumer that the wall is too thin and is backed by styrofoam that cannot hold the screws.
The consumer stated that her 14 months old granddaughter is currently living with her. She is afraid that the shelves will fall on her and injure her if she opens the door by mistake.
The consumer stated that the unit is not manufactured and designed properly.

The 2 original manufacturer-supplied light bulbs at the ceiling of the refrigerator have burned holes through the plastic interior. This is a definite fire danger and a compromise of the cooling system. I have unscrewed the bulbs so they will not come on, but the damage to the refrigerator is in need of repair. Note: The freezer section has ceiling mounted bulbs as well, but the area above the bulbs is protected by a reflective metal coated insulation material, so there is no issue in the freezer section. The product, in the report: FRIGIDAIRE SIDE BY SIDE WITH ICE MAKER AND COLD WATER DISPENSAR
August 16, 2015 my Frigidaire refrigerator caught on fire in my kitchen. I awoke to the sound of crackling, fearing I had left something on the stove top I entered the kitchen quickly. The room was already full of smoke but there was nothing on the stove top. I began checking my small appliances (toaster, coffee maker, microwave) Seeing nothing wrong I began checking the outlets. When my husband began helping me I had an opportunity to listen for the noise again which to my surprise started again from the rear of the refrigerator. Along with the noise the smoke began again. This came as a complete shock to me as this identical thing occurred August 14, 2014 to the Frigidaire I had purchased 14 months earlier. According to the technician that fire began with the compressor. A new Frigidaire Model FFHS2611LBLA was delivered to my home in September of 2014. Therefore that unit has been in my kitchen just shy of 1 year. August 16, 2015 it appears that the fire began from the same location as the first fire however when a technician can visit (delay because of the rural location I live in) that will be confirmed. I am grateful I was home each occasion because the outcome could have been entirely different. The model of refrigerator is FFHS2611LBLA. I am at a loss to understand how the identical unit has self-ignited twice. I cannot come away with any other explanation other than design defect?

The product, in the report: Gallery Refrigerator (French Door with Bottom Freezer)
The caller stated that the refrigerator has two light bulbs in the top center of the unit. The light bulbs have one switch each (one on left side door and one on the right side door). The consumer stated that both of the light bulbs overheated and melted the ceiling of the refrigerator. There is a hole (about 3 inches) above each of the light bulbs. The ceiling has melted and is exposing the insulation of the refrigerator.
The consumer has not removed the covers of the light bulbs to examine other damages. The consumer stated that when she manually presses the light switch, the bulbs do turn off. She does not know what caused the light bulbs to overheat.
The consumer contacted Frigidaire in regards to the issue. They informed her that they have an epoxy repair kit to apply to the refrigerator damage. The kit would cost her $39. The repair kit would patch the holes. The consumer was informed that she can conduct that repair on her own or have a technician come out at her expense to repair it. The consumer does not believe that would solve the issue. She thinks that the issue can reoccur even if she applies the epoxy repair. The consumer mentioned that epoxy is highly flammable and can make the unit more of a fire hazard.

Our refrigerator that we had bought in March of 2013 sparked an electrical fire out of no where July 3, 2015, I heard a frying sound, ran over to the refrigerator and smoke was coming out of the back of it, I threw the main breaker to the house because I am unable to pull the refrigerator out by myself, my oldest son helped me pull it out and unplugged it. My husband got home and removed the back at the bottom and can see the wires at the compressor are burnt and melted. If I had not been home we would have had a large fire. npw I’m without a refrigerator after special ordering this size for almost 1300.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire refrigerator
I emptied my refrigerator to clean it and noticed the lights had gotten VERY hot. Hot enough where they melted 2 holes in the liner ceiling of the unit. It was so hot it opened up the plastic liner and exposed the insulation. The bulbs are charred but still work. The refrigerator works properly. No, it was not a power surge. My whole house is on a surge protector. Upon further review the bulbs in the freezer were in the same shape. Black char on them. I’ve worked to hard to have my house burn down by a refrigerator and feel this incident is more than justified and this manufacturer and the public need to know what happened and the risks involved.
I do have pictures to show how bad the burns are.

while at home with my family at approximately 6:00pm on 05/19/2015 my mother in law alerted me that she could smell something burning. Thinking it was the rice cooker I brushed it off until the smell became stronger and smelled of an electrical burn coming from the refrigerator. Quickly I opened the fridge and found smoke and fire spewing from the upper icemaker. Knowing that electrical fires can easily get out of control if handled with water I reached for my fire extinguisher and put the fire out. I immediately got my family out of the house and opened all the windows to air out the heavy burn smell.
at approximately 6:25pm 05/19/2015, I called the phone number listed on my fridge 1-800-944-9044 which prompted me to call a separate number for customer service (706) 860-4110. I spoke with a customer service representative {REDACTED]. {REDACTED] gathered all my information and verified that she sees my fridge has been registered. I explained to {REDACTED] what had happened and that I was concerned for my family and the safety of others out there that may have this same fridge. {REDACTED] replied that because it is outside of warranty their is nothing they can do about it. {REDACTED] advised that I have a technician look at it and diagnose the problem and then have it repaired. I asked if Frigidaire would cover those expenses and {REDACTED]Kendra replied NO since it is outside of warranty. {REDACTED]Kendra offered me the option of getting an extended warranty but said it was expensive, running approximately $600 or more for 3 years I then asked to speak to her supervisor. After holding for 3-5 mins {REDACTED]Kendra came back on the line to tell me her Supervisor says that because the unit is outside of warranty there is nothing they can do for me. I then asked again to speak with the supervisor. after a brief hold the supervisor {REDACTED] came on the line. I explained my concern and my loss and {REDACTED] says again their is nothing they can do since it is outside of warranty. {REDACTED] told me I should call the Corporate escalation department but did not have a phone number for me. I found the number on my own and called only to find out they are already closed for the day.
5/20/2015 at 12:11 pm I called in to the customer service department again 706-860-4110 and spoke with {REDACTED]. {REDACTED] verified my info and then transferred me to the Frigidaire Corporate Manager {REDACTED]. {REDACTED] heard me out and said that Frigidaire is very concerned in this case but because it is outside of warranty they can do nothing for me. {REDACTED] then recommended that I contact a local Authorized Service Technician in my area but when she did a search she could not find one and that I should just call ASE or Sears for assistance.
I let {REDACTED] know that my biggest concern is all the people that own a fridge like mines that could potentially burn their home down when they are at work.
{REDACTED] reassured me that there is nothing they can do since the unit is outside of warranty but if I pay for a service technician to come out and diagnose the problem and then pay for the repairs, she could “possibly” get me a discount on the parts.

Consumer stated that her refrigerator caught fire, she had heard a noise and when she got to the kuchen she noticed that the kitchen was engulfed in black smoke. She was trying to find out where the smoke was coming from, she pulled the refrigerator from the wall, but could not find the location, she continued to open up other appliances and then she noticed that sparks and flames were emitting from the rear of the unit.
Consumer then called 911, the fire department came out immediately and contained the fire. A fire report was filed.
3/3 Consumer contacted the retailer and she was advised that they were not responsible she would need to contact the manufacturer about the problem she had with the unit. She contacted the manufacturer who provided their liability department number and she was only able to leave a message for someone to contact her.
Consumer feels that this refrigerator could have caused a house fire if she was not present and feels that this product should be recalled.
The consumer added the smoke was thick and chemical smelling...She called 911 while opening doors to clear the smoke then proceeded to investigate the fire as described in the report.
The consumer also noted the responding fire department identified the refrigerator as the cause of the fire...They [fire department] showed her where the fire started inside the unit...The consumer stated she was advised the appliance was a safety hazard and she should contact the manufacturer immediately for a replacement.
The consumer also added the product was installed by Lowes, unmodified, and used according to the manufacturer’s instruction...She noted it proved to be a life threatening fire hazard and should be recalled. The consumer indicated that after 3 weeks the company has made no attempt to resolve the situation or arrange an inspection of the burnt out appliance.

On 02/15/15 the consumer noticed smoke coming from the kitchen and realized it was coming from behind the unit. The consumer noticed red and orange color sparks. The consumer shut off the circuit breaker then unplugged the unit from the wall. The consumer looked at the back of the unit and did not notice any burn damages. About 10 minutes later the consumer turned the circuit breaker on and plugged the unit back in. The consumer noticed sparks behind the unit once the compressor started running.
On 02/18/15 the consumer contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The firm recommended that the consumer arrange for a technician to examine the unit but at the consumer’s expense. The consumer feels that this is a safety issue and the firm should take responsibility to repair the unit.
03/24/15 Update from Consent: I obtained this product through an energy saving program that was sponsored by Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC). What they did was go through your home replacing regular light bulbs with CFL light bulbs as well as check refrigerator and freezer for energy usage and if you qualify they will replace each items free of charge mean that this program may have placed this product in a lot of people homes. If the spark would have found a burnable material it would have started a fire and it would have appeared that the fire started on the outside of the refrigerator instead of the refrigerator was the cause of the fire. After my wife saw the smoke it took us 15 minutes to find out that it was the refrigerator because the sparks had stop leaving just the smoke out there was no sign of where the smoke came from or cause it. Then the refrigerator started sparking again and at this time we were able to see it was the refrigerator and immediately I turn off the circuit breaker and unplug it. To know and see something like this was a very scary thought that we could have went to sleep instead of being up and watching a Netflix movie, because if we had we could have gotten burn up. What makes it worse is that if it had started a fire and I had went to sleep that the fire would have trapped me in the bedroom with no way out and it would not matter if there was a smoke detector or not, which we do have these, if there had been burnable material the fire would most like start and by the time the smoke detector sound it would be too late to do anything. What may have save me if the worse had happen would have been the fire extinguisher that is in the hallway off of my bedroom after all of this to tell Frigidaire and they act unconcern about it make you wonder did they already knew that this product could cause a fire. It would be ashame that they did.
There have been no prior incidents.

The product, in the report: Counter depth French door refrigerator.
Purchased a Frigidaire counter depth refrigerator model number FGHG2366PFO and felt that temperature maintenance of appropriate temperature was inadequate from date of purchase, but failed to measure with independent thermometer. The unit eventually stopped cooling completely which was confirmed by thermometer. Following repair, the unit failed to maintain cooling below 40F as confirmed by service personnel and thermometer. After numerous unsuccessful repair calls, the unit was replaced by Frigidaire with a similar (Professional Series) unit, model number FPHG2399PF1. Unit also fails to maintain temperature below 40F even following service repair.
Refrigerators that do not maintain proper cooling, and offer no indication other than consumer perception that they are not cooling properly, present a severe health risk by not preventing the decay of food and promoting the growth of food born pathogens. “Use by”, “Keep refrigerated”, and shelf life dates are meaningless if refrigeration is not maintained properly.
My wife has severe gastrointestinal issues which have resulted in her hospitalization on multiple occasions. Even though there is not enough evidence to create a direct link relating these two appliance failures to her condition, consumption of spoiled or improperly refrigerated food is a major concern for her health.
I believe that this series of refrigerator models has either a design flaw, or a systemic manufacturing problem that is not being acknowledged or addressed by the manufacturer.

I have a Frigidaire refrigerator, purchased 12/2010 at Lowe’s in Lexington, KY. I was cleaning the shelves and vegetable bins this morning and one of the glass shelves exploded as I washing it. The shelf had been removed from the refrigerator and I was holding it as I immersed it in about two inches of water in the sink. The glass exploded and went ALL over the kitchen. I was the only person in the kitchen when this occurred and was not injured.

As I open my refrigerator to gather my produce for the meal of the day. I notice a burning smell coming from the inside of my fridge. After inspecting my fridge I came to the conclusion that the smell was coming from the ceiling where the light bulb sits. The bulb was now melted inside the plastic of the refrigerator. Which makes it impossible to take out the bulb. Trying to figure out what could have actually caused this to happened I when online to do some research and notice this is not an isolated incident. I believe that this product is a fire hazard and the manufacture should issue a recall immediately.

I purchased a fridgidaire refrigerator in Nov. 2012. Had a repair person come out several months later because my food in the freezer was all going bad and I had ice build up inside. The repair person came out and said the gasket needs to stretch out and it takes time. It has now been a year and a half, in the beginning it was not so bad, even got better for a while. Now all my frozen food is going bad and my ice sticks together because things are melting. Fridgidaire will not send me a replacement part for free without me paying for there service providers time. I feel that they need to send the replacement part free of charge since the gasket has been bad since I bought the unit. I am not even asking that they come out and replace it for free. I am only asking for the part to be shipped to my house. I should have the right to hire my own repair person to install it. Especially since there repair company gave me a bologna excuse.

The product, in the report: Frigedair Side by Side Refrigerator with ice maching.
On my 04/04/2013 I purchased a Frigedaire Refrigerator Model #FFHS2611LB7, Serial #4A30811744 from Lowe’s. Yesterday 08/10/204, that refrigerator without any warning caught fire. Fortunately being Sunday both my son and my husband were home. While eating breakfast I heard an odd crackling noise, fearing I had left a pan on the stove I went in to the kitchen. Immediately the kitchen was filling with smoke and there was a strong odor. I yelled which brought my son and husband into the room where they immediately identified the source of the smoke as being from the back of the refrigerator. As they moved it out from the wall I saw the flames and became very concerned as they then worked to unplug it. I contacted the Extended Protection Plan number and provided the necessary information, I was given a date of August 13, 2014 for a repair persons visit. This morning I received a call telling me my appointment had not been scheduled and I needed to call Frigedaire for any service or warranty requests. Upon calling Frigedaire I was told they would not grant any warranty or service requests because I had purchased my extended protection plan from an outside source. Now I am on the phone with the original number I called once again trying to request service. I am grateful that my mom who is 91 and bedridden was not the only other occupant home with me yesterday morning.

Refrigerator section alarmed high temprature, when checked the temprature was 60 degrees. Unplugged and called authorized repairman. Repairman came and found that the light bulb remained on in the refrigerator when the door was closed, the lightbulb had burned a hole through the plastic inside cover and insulation was exposed. Repairman stated that had I not been home at the time and unplugged the refrigerator it could have caught fire. The incident was reported to Fridgidaire by both the repairman and I. They told the repairman that it was a problem with the “mother board”. Fridgidaire made no attempt to rectify the situation. Upon researching online it appears others have had issues with this same problem. I have children in the house, thank goodness this did not catch fire during the night! The refrigerator was purchased at Lowe’s on 9/10/2011. Model # LGHN2844MFO, Serial # 4A12413780. It is a Fridgidaire Gallery refrigerator, freezer is on the bottom and has french doors on top. We unplugged the refrigerator and and the flames were extinguished. Luckily we were home and noticed the smoke filled kitchen before any major damage was caused. Minimal damage was done to our wood floors as a waxy substance dripped onto the floor from the fire melting some plastic on the refrigerator.

This is to inform about a fire that occurred Saturday May 17 2014, in our 2008 Frigidaire refrigerator. As we sat drinking coffee in the morning, a popping, cracking sound emanated from the bottom of the appliance. This was followed by intense smoke which filled the house. We quickly unplugged it and, opened windows venting the house. Had we not been there,( we just got back from a all day trip) our house may have burned and our dog would surly have died! I own a Frigidaire Gallery series refrigerator, Model # FGHB2844LF5, purchased in Jan of 2012. On Feb 10, 2014, my girlfriend noticed a crack on the roof of the refrigerator liner. This was right above the light bulbs. She also noticed the plastic was warped, which brings it closer to the heat source (light bulb). We feel the crack is a direct result of the heat warping the liner, and could be a potential fire hazard. The bulbs get extremely hot to the touch, and if the liner continues to warp, it could come in contact with the light bulb. She looked online and discovered ours was not an isolated incident.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Electroclux Refrigerator
This five year old refrigerator has a major engineering flaw causing the water filter to explode with great force from its compartment into the face of the person operating the water filter release. This happened to me causing cuts inside and outside my mouth. I can see where this could also cause possible blindness or broken noses for other unsuspecting victims. The ice maker splashes water down onto the motor fan causing ice build up and causing the unit to shut down. At first, the water dispenser does not work. The manual tells the consumer to replace the water filter. I did that and ran the water again. The water ran for a little bit but then stopped. I decided to check the water filter again. At that point I released the water filter and it exploded with great force out of its compartment right into my face. I have received no warning from Electrolux about this possibly happening. The manual does not mention anything about this being a possibility. I have received no recall notice from Frigidaire/Eiectrolux. I have contacted Frigidaire/Eiectrolux about this problem but received no satisfaction or offer to fix this issue so that it would not happen again. These units should be recalled for safe reasons.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire side-by-side, frost-proof, refrigerator-freezer. 26.0 Cu Ft. Made in Mexico, model FRS6HR45KS3. Manufactured 04-11.
I have a Frigidaire, model FRS6HR45KS3 refrigerator with a manufactured date of 04/11. The refrigerator appliance light went out and while removing the old light, I noticed that there was something on the glass of the bulb. Upon further inspection I discovered it was burnt plastic. At this point I looked back up in the refrigerator and saw that the ceiling in the refrigerator above where the light is was melted severely and burnt (dark brown/black color and bubbled up). In addition to the now compromised seal of the refrigerator, this poses a serious fire safety hazard as obviously hot melted plastic was dripping onto a hot bulb. The door has never been left open for an extended period of time, nor have we ever had any food spoilage issues. Also, I checked the bulb that was installed and verified it was a standard appliance light bulb with the recommended wattage of 40 watts.

My Electrolux-made, Figidaire-branded refrigerator, model GLHS36EESB0. It caught fire in my home on 7/7/2013. Fortunately, the damage was limited to just the refrigerator and it could have been much, much worse. I called Electrolux (parent company for Frigidaire) on 7/9/2013. The product, in the report: side by side refrigerator (freezer on 1 side, refrigerator on the other)
This refrigerator was purchased for their son and is located at his home.
The consumers saw a puddle of water on the floor and checked the refrigerator. The freezer’s temperature was set to “high”. They (consumer & her husband) knew right away that something was wrong with the freezer. They opened the refrigerator and the light was “off”. They asked their son about this. The son said that about 6 months ago, he reached in the back of the refrigerator and felt heat coming from the light fixture. The son removed the light bulb with a light cloth. This was the original light bulb that came with the refrigerator. The son also discovered a 2” - 3” deep burn in the top of the refrigerator, where the light housing is located.
(6/24/13) The consumer called the mfr. at [REDACTED] number, but she was referred to a number: [REDACTED]. She stayed on the line for approximately 15 minutes, but was unable to speak with a representative.
The consumer checked the Internet and saw numerous complaints about this mfr’s refrigerator.
The refrigerator side of this appliance, seems cold, but the consumer is not sure if that side operates at the appropriate temperature. However, the freezer side does not work. The consumer advised her son not to keep any food in the refrigerator side of the appliance.
The consumer is concerned that this presents a fire hazard and she would like for this information to be made public so that others are aware of the potential hazard.
The refrigerator is “not” under recall. However, the door handle on the refrigerator side came loose and a mfr’s authorized technician came out and repaired. This happened within the first year of purchase and the refrigerator was repaired under warranty at that time.

The product, in the report: The refrigerator is two-door, white, with the serial number 4A11709831 with a water and an ice-maker on the side door.
A refrigerator, made by Frigidaire, caught on fire when the main light bulb used to provide light burned the roof plastic and scorched a hole that went past the plastic.
The fire caused by this incident could have been far worse if no one was in the house to attend to the burning smell that consumed the entire apartment.
Thankfully, this was noticed early and was prevented in becoming something bigger.
This refrigerator was bought in Lowes, and turned out to be the worst decision made. The manufacturer and store was called to report this issue and they all denied responsibility because the warranty expired and they were no longer responsible.
The incident is a defect in the model, which left the light bulb extremely close to the plastic surface, which caused the light bulb’s heat to melt the plastic.

My seven month side by side refrigerator caught fire . Smoke began billowing out from underneath the fridge. A nasty smell of burning plastic followed, and there were popping and crackling noises. Freezer temperature immediately began to climb. No flames were seen, but I unplugged the fridge right away.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire - 22.5 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator
Refrigerator Fire Caused by Design Flaw and Thawing Turkey (Frigidaire Refrigerator Model Number: FFHS2313LS)
I have a detailed report including photos on the following web page: http://www.planetdriftwood.com/refrigeratorfire.htm
On November 21, 2012 at 4:15 AM my Frigidaire refrigerator caught fire. Fortunately I happened to be up early and walking through the kitchen when the refrigerator cycled on and started to make an electrical sparking sound. I walked toward the refrigerator and looked behind it where I could see the flickering of the flames and could smell the odor from the fire. I immediately pulled the refrigerator out reached in behind and pulled the power cord out. The sparking sound stop immediately, the flame died down, but the smoke continued for a while. This was the day before Thanksgiving and the refrigerator was filled with the Thanksgiving dinner supplies, including a 20 lb [REDACTED] turkey which was thawing on the bottom shelf just above the “Fresh Drawer”. Since I had no backup refrigerator and it being the day before Thanksgiving and unlikely I would be able to have a replacement refrigerator installed before the Thanksgiving foods were spoiled I decided to determine if there might be a possible fix to the problem. I should also say that I have an electric engineering degree, 30 years of experience working for an electric utility including a position as superintendent of maintenance for a power plant, and also have a couple of years working on Nuclear attack submarine power systems. This gave me some confidence in being able to assess the problem.
I removed the lower back panel from the refrigerator so I could see the area where the flames and smoke was coming from. I got my camcorder so I could document the problem. I decided the best way to identify where the problem is, was to plug the refrigerator back in and let it cycle on while being ready to unplug the refrigerator immediately before any potential flames could spread anywhere. I turned my camcorder on and plugged the refrigerator in and as soon as the refrigerant compressor cycled on the arcing and flames started coming from under the compressor starter switch/connector. I unplugged the refrigerator and the flames died out as smoke took over and then died out.
I could see that the starter/connector had a fluid which had dripped onto its top surface. It appeared the dripping was coming from a penetration just above the starter/connector which had a couple of plastic tubes running through it into the refrigerator interior.
I removed the starter/connector and examined it closely to find that there were two plug-in connectors on the bottom side which were the connection points for the starter capacitor. There was a burn section between these connectors where the plastic was blackened and carbonized. This condition would fit with a conductive fluid building in this area between these relatively large surface area connectors which would support a short circuit current eventually leading to the fire. This made me interested in what could have been dripping through this opening above the starter/connector. What I found was that the 20 lb Butter Ball turkey on the bottom shelf had thawed and its juices were pooling on the shelf and dripping off the edges, including the rear edge, which was over the tube penetrations which carried the dripping down into the compressor compartment and dripping onto the starter/connector. Obviously these raw turkey juices are saline and as they dripped onto the starter connector they would concentrate through some evaporating thus increasing the conductivity until it reached the point where the short circuit current through the conductive path heated the plastic and drippings enough to start the arcing and fire.
We are only very lucky I happened to be walking through the kitchen at the moment when the Frigidaire Refrigerator cycled on at the point where this build up supported the arcing and combustion point. If I had not observed this directly, other combustible materials in the refrigerator, including plastic parts and the rear panel could have caught on fire and then spread to the finished wood kitchen cabinet directly next to the refrigerator.
This Frigidaire Refrigerator and any other with this design should be recalled. The longer refrigerators of this design are allowed to stay out there the higher the probability that another fire will result from the same situation causing serious injury or death.
Update:
Frigidaire’s reaction to refrigerator fire report – On November 23rd I called Frigidaire to report the refrigerator fire and ask if there was a recall on this Frigidaire model FFHS2313LS refrigerator. I was told there was no recall on this model refrigerator. She also told me there was no warranty on my refrigerator and therefore Frigidaire would only cover the cost of parts. No labor costs would be covered. I purchased the refrigerator new 5/29/2011. Due to the seriousness of this product catching on fire I thought I should be able to get a full refund so I could replace the refrigerator with what I feel is a safe refrigerator. After all, this could have killed us had I not been walking through the kitchen when it caught on fire. She told me a liability claim could not be filed without there being any damage to other property.
Replacement part availability – On November 24th I called the parts supplier identified as the parts supplier in our area for this refrigerator. The parts supplier did not have the parts in stock and told me it would be 7 to 10 days for the parts to come in. The parts were identified as Starter (what I am calling the switch/connector), Capacitor, and Clamp.
Replacement part temporary repair – When the refrigerator fire occurred, I thought the odds were that the parts would be difficult to replace the day before Thanksgiving and therefore, after seeing the problem thought I had a good chance to repair the part temporarily to get by till replacement parts could be obtained. Based on all the evidence I mentioned above, I felt the part failure was due to the short between the terminals and therefore if the shorting material could be cut out there would be no path for the shorting current and thus the components should then operate as designed. Based on this, I removed the shorting material, protected the connector from any potential dripping from above it and reinstalled it. The refrigerator has been operating for one week now with this repaired part. This further validates my conclusion that the problem was due to the leaking meat juice onto the switch/connector.

At 2 am this morning I heard an electrical arcing sound coming from the kitchen. As I enter the kitchen I could smell electrical burning and see visible flame coming from the back of my refrigerator. I disconnected the power and pulled the fridge away from the wall. The starter relay for the compressor was all burnt up as well as some of the foam insulation in the compressor housing.

Frigidaire/Electrolux side by side refrigerator Gallery Series model GLRS 267zcw1 Serial # la 33506589 This refrigerator bought in 2003 just caught on fire. The unit has never been repaired or touched and worked fine until this past Friday when I opened the refrigerator door and there was a popping noise and flames started shooting out of the upper left wall, the light was still on so that didn’t appear to be the issue. The entire inside of the refrig and freezer areas were covered in a thick black ash and apparently the fire or rather the heat had been going on for quite a while as some of the plastic bottles that were on the shelf had melted and a bottle of [REDACTED] chocolate was boiling over! The fire department said they had never seen or heard or anything like this and the insurance adjusters had never heard of this either. I contacted frigidaire and since the unit was out of warranty they did not seem to care. They told me if I really wanted to know why the unit caught on fire they would set up a service call at my expense to let ME know why, I told them I didn’t care why but I thought that they should care! We were extremely lucky the entire house did not burn down as I was up late and decided to get a drink and fortunately opened the refrig door at 11:30pm otherwise the family would have been upstairs asleep!
