The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Feb 21, 2024, sent to the company Feb 26, 2024, published by CPSC Mar 11, 2024

The product, in the report: Frigidaire French Door Refrigerator Model FFHB2750TS

There is a major Design and/or Manufacturing defect on Frigidaire French Door Refrigerators with in door ice and water dispensers. Our 3 year old Model FFHB2750TS has a huge ice formation at Ice Maker Drain which caused the plastic to break. When inspecting the area the ice cut my finger and obviously could be a great hazard to a child. This is obviously a major design and/or manufacturing defect and completely UN-acceptable for a 3 year old $2,000 Refrigerator.

(12/15/2023) The consumer notice that she was having the same issue as the refrigerators that were recalled. She contacted the firm and was advised that her product was not included.

The consumer was trying to get ice out of the dispenser, but it would not come out. She heard a crack. The consumer didn’t realize that there were plastic chips in the ice until she saw it in her grandson’s glass.

Made Feb 16, 2024, sent to the company Feb 21, 2024, published by CPSC Mar 6, 2024

The product, in the report: White Frigidaire refrigerator/freezer, Model # FFHS2322MWLA, Seriel # 4A70202781, 22.6 Cu ft.

Similar to the Frigidaire side by side refrigerator recall dated 2/8/24, I have experienced similar issues with cracking and shards of sharp plastic in the ice bucket of my side by side refrigerator/freezer. I have had several instances of these plastic pieces (up to 1” or more in length) winding up in my cup when using the external ice dispenser. My refrigerator was purchased in 2017, but my model number (FFHS2322MWLA) was not included in the recent recall. I still occasionally get larger pieces of plastic if I use the external ice dispenser, but almost always see at least some small slivers. Because of this, I have stopped using the external dispenser and obtain ice via hand by opening the freezer door and reaching into the ice maker bucket.

When dispensing ice from the side-by-side refrigerator, my mother-in-law found small and large pieces of white plastic in the ice after a piece got into her mouth from the drink. I removed the ice holder and emptied it and found more plastic pieces and where they had broken off from. The icemaker became unusable and continues to be unusable.

Within one year of purchase of a new Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerator, the interior shell cracked. This shell is specifically EXCLUDED by the manufacturer. However, this is a health and safety risk because moisture and food can enter inside the liner cavity and with the temperature and humidity fluctuations cause bacterial, viral and mold growth - common causes of human respiratory illnesses.

The product, in the report: Basic level refrigerator without any internet connections, no icemaker, etc.

Having had a new (1-1/2 year old) Frigidaire Refrigerator fail last month, I got to talking to the repair person, who explained he has been seeing compressors fail frequently since the switch to R600, which is butane. Anecdotally, I began to wonder if R600 (butane) was implicated in what seems to me as an increase in home explosions. (What can I say, I was an ICU Burn Nurse for 30 years, I think about this stuff.) I realize the overwhelming number are probably attributable to archaic gas lines, but it did make me wonder. And, I only have access to my own observations, which are often skewed and no substitute for nationwide data.

I had filed a complaint with CPSC regarding the failure, the company’s refusal to take responsibility, etc. and I had mentioned this concern at the end of the complaint. CPSC e-mailed a reply and suggested I file a complaint at this e-mail address, so I leave the research in your capable hands.

I want to make crystal clear that my refrigerator did not do anything except stop working. I just wondered, after my conversation with the repair person, if the problem could be wider than just compressors failing and actually concern overheating, fan failures and then explosions. Also, manufacturer date is a guess since the form would not accept Don’t Know or N/A in that spot, but it was manufactured before 4/13/2022 when I bought it new.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire white side by side refrigerator. Model - LFSS2312TP

I’m reporting a Frigidaire refrigerator side by side - model # LFSS2312TP. I purchased at the end 0f 2020 and received in 2021 and I’m currently on the 7th time that it has thawed and defrosted on both the freezer and refrigerator side. I’ve had multiple repair companies come out to replace parts and the same issue keeps occurring which is freon is slowing leaking out somewhere and somehow. I’ve reached out to Frigidaire numerous times stating the issue at hand and that it will only last me 3 -6 months until I have to throw everything out. The 1st time occuring a few months after we had it delivered and set-up and lastly just a few weeks ago. Wasting more money on food that has gone bad. No injuries have occurred but since the same issue is the freon leaking, how is that this item cannot be replaced? The damage this can cause to my family from the exposure over numerous times of no repair and no help from the company at all.

Although this piece was quite obvious, a smaller piece could easily go unnoticed and present a danger if swallowed. There had been a previous recall on this refrigerator’s ice maker, which was repaired by a manufacturer technician. I contacted Frgidaire and their solution was for me to pay for a technician to come to my house and investigate, which i declined.

My Frigidaire refrigerator started making a clicking sound this morning. Within 15 minutes, smoke stared pouring out from the bottom of it. I immediately pulled it away from the wall and unplugged it. While unplugged, I removed the drawers to see if maybe something spilled and perhaps dropped into the electrical parts. I didn’t see anything obvious so plugged it back in to see if I could identify the problem. Almost immediately, orange flames were visible on the bottom left corner, within the tubing coming off of the compressor. Foul-smelling smoke began filling the room again. I immediately unplugged it and the fire/sparking stopped. Thankfully I was home!

The cooler was used in my 13-year old daughter’s room to cool beverages. It began to emit a burning smell and became discolored in the vicinity of the cool/warm switch. I opened the unit and observed a defective cool/warm switch which had failed, developed resistance to current, overheated, melted and began burning the inside of the case and wiring. I discontinued use of this product as it was an obvious fire hazard. I contacted the manufacturer, and reported this incident in detail, however, I received no response.

The icemaker bin on a Frigidaire M/N FGSC2335TFB refrigerator has failed resulting in shards of plastic (both white & clear) being dispensed into our drinking water glass. I may even have swallowed some of the small clear shards. The unit is <3yrs old (purchased May 2020). I contacted Frigidaire to address and they only advised I seek a Service provider with no other proactive measures taken

The product, in the report: Refrigerator Ice-Maker

The consumer indicates that she went to dispense some ice from her refrigerator ice-maker and later noticed when the ice had melted that the flap that allows the ice to come out was broken into pieces inside the cup.

The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative she spoke to asked her for photographs of the issue and, when reviewed, informed her that they could provide a fifty-percent discount towards a replacement ice machine as the unit is no longer under warranty. The consumer is not interested in this option as she is more concerned about the safety risks associated.

The consumer plans on keeping her refrigerator for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

4/4/2023: I would like to note, electrolux did not offer 50% off of ice maker until I asked several times to speak to a supervisor. A supervisor never spoke with me.

My wife and I both felt ill after having eaten food from our refrigerator that was not properly reporting the correct temperature. The freezer had stopped working and was reporting a high temperature alert, but the fridge continued to report a temp. of 36° F so we believed it was working and continued to use it. Food started to spoil faster so I finally used a thermometer and discovered the interior temperature to be around 58° F, however no high temp. alert was being displayed. Eventually, after the interior temp. of the fridge had risen closer to 70° F, the high temp. alert began to display.

On December 31, 2022 our three year old Frigidaire refrigerator spontaneously caught on fire in the early morning hours while my family and I slept. Fumes from the burning compressor filled the house and woke us up. Fortunately, the refrigerator was connected to the same circuit as our GFCI outlet which tripped and cut the power to the product. The refrigerator is model FFSS2615TS2. Had our GFCI outlet not cut the power, we could have lost our home or suffered worse injury.

I was drinking through my [REDACTED] lid when I clamped down on a small sharp shard of plastic that had unbeknownst to me the broken off the baffle in our ice maker. I was able to reach 2 of my children by text but had to call the school of one to have them dump her water. When dumping her water, she found a piece of broken plastic in her bottle. This could have ended in such tragedy. Either one of us could have choked on it or the sharp piece could have caused internal damage.

The Frigidaire Mini Retro 6 can fridge CAUGHT FIRE during the night with my 10 year old son sleeping just a few feet away. It was on a shelf in his room with nothing surrounding it. While our family was asleep it caught fire. My son woke up to smoke alarms sounding and his entire room/basement was covered in smoke with a ball of fire in the corner. He woke up frantic and screaming trying to find the door. It was awful. He normally keeps this fridge right next to his headboard. He had moved it to the shelf just a few days prior. The fire department said if it would have been by his bed he would have been the one who caught fire with it. They said if we would not have been home our entire home would be a loss. This product is SO DANGEROUS!!!!! MY SON COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED. THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED!!!!!

Took weeks to get the parts ordered and installed. Looks like the recall should have taken place 6-7 years earlier. I’m lucky I’m a little fixit inclined.

I had the exact same thing happen as a previous post for Frigidaire model FFHS2622MWKA refrigerator. On the morning of Feb 8th 2022 I smelled electrical ozone (electrical fire) around our kitchen. While searching for the source I started to hear a kind of crackling noise. I quickly narrowed it down to the refrigerator area. I pulled the fridge away form the wall and could see flame and smoke coming from the bottom on the unit. I unplugged it. I then removed the lower cover to inspect the electrical and compressor area. As in the previous post I also found water dripping from the hole where water lines go back and forth to the filter inside the top of the fridge. Plugging it back in for a moment confirmed the issue at the electrical connections. Insulation has burned off the wires etc. There is no repair that I would consider safe so we will have to buy a new unit as it is out of warranty. Thankfully this happened while I was near the unit and so it did not burn our house down. I can only imagine what would have happened if this had occurred overnight or if we were not able to control it.

I own a Frigidaire refrigerator that came with a new house purchased in 2013. On 12/31/21, the wiring around the compressor began to smoke heavily and caught fire. The refrigerator had to be unplugged and the fire put out. We were home at the time and caught it early, but the fire was at risk of spreading to the house if we were asleep or not home.

Hello, last night our Frigidaire fridge caught on fire in the back bottom where the motor is at. It was about 11 pm, my grandson and I were already in bed with the door closed and fan on, fortunately my son was home and upstairs where the fridge is located, (he lives downstairs in the basement apartment and is not usually upstairs) he heard crackling and smelled something burning. after investigating, he saw fire from the back of the fridge and unplugged it and thankfully no damage to the wall yet, but I shudder to think if he had not been here what could have happened. I would like a refund or a replacement. The 800 number I called from the list inside the fridge said they could only give a 10% rebate, which is ridiculous. I also used the chat and they stated the same thing. I fridge should not catch on fire which could have resulted in destruction of our home and lives. The product didn’t just break down, it caught on fire late at night too! To state that they can only give a 10% rebate when the item is clearly dangerous and somehow faulty is terrible customer service and shows a lack of concern and empathy for their customers safety, well being and peace of mind and shows only greed on the companies part.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire gallery refrigerator purchased at the end of 2019 I do not currently have the model or serial, but that may be provided.

Due to improper manufacturing processes many Frigidaire / Electrolux refrigerators are dangerous and will fail within days to a year after purchase. Frigidaire / Electrolux does not properly secure screws into their plastic shelving and drawer systems. The screws are set into holes without teeth to hold the screws. Instead Frigidaire / Electrolux made the receiving hole smaller than the screw shank so the plastic will hold the screw in place. The problem with this is that the plastic holding the screw is placed under extreme pressure from the screw, as well as any items placed on the shelf and drawers. All of the areas in the refrigerator where this improper manufacturing process is (shelfs and drawers which usually contain glass and hold glass items) have stress marks / micro stress cracks which may break off at any time spiling the shelf / drawers contents all over the consumer causing possible bodily harm. I had this happen when I opened a drawer (containing a “normal” amount of weight) and the plastic snapped off causing the drawer to fall with all of its contents towards my feet. Luckily I caught it and reached out to Frigidaire / Electrolux which ignored my complaint and told me to purchase a replacement part. When I purchased this part I noticed that the areas where screws were to be installed did not have threads and instead were molded smaller than the screw. As i placed the screws in I noticed a white haze / stress mark/ micro stress crack form form. I observed this same haze/ stress marks on all of the shelving and drawers in my refrigerator. I contacted the BBB and Frigidaire / Electrolux reached out to me offering to send a replacement part, even though I told them several times that their product had faulty manufacturing processes and was “designed to fail” at some point whether months or years after being purchased by a consumer. Frigidaire / Electrolux is still denying nor acknowledging my claims. Many of their refrigerator models are incredibly dangerous and will eventually cause food and or glass and other materials to fall upon the consumers. I did not notice until I observed a lack of threads and improper sizing on the replacement part that I initially purchased.

The product, in the report: 18 cubic ft., refrigerator with freezer on top

9:2021: The temperature is not constant in the refrigerator. Sometimes the temperature is different in the refrigerator than it should be and other times it’s lower in the freezer than it should be. The consumer has lost a substantial amount of food as a result of this issue. She’s attempted to drink milk only to find out it was spoiled.

Approximately 10 – 14 days after problems with the temperature fluctuation, she contacted the manufacturer to report the problem to them.

A few weeks later, an authorized technician came out and changed a part in the refrigerator. However, this did not correct the problem. She called the firm back and informed them that the problem was still present. She was told that it would be a few more weeks before another technician could be sent out.

10/6/2021: When the refrigerator would cycle on, the motor sounded as it if were straining to operate. The consumer said it seemed to be difficult to keep the refrigerator cool. However, the next 2 times it cycled on, it sounded normal, but at a later time, the sound was loud and there was a burning odor in her home, which emitted from the refrigerator. This fluctuation lasted approximately 4 days, before she stopped using it and had someone move it to her garage.

The consumer opened the refrigerator and said she was hit with toxic fumes that made her sick. She called Poison Control for advice on what she should do. She experienced burning eyes, watery eyes, dry heaves, difficulty breathing. Poison Control asked how long she was exposed and she said about 10 seconds. They told her that she did not need to go to the ER since the exposure time was very small. Her symptoms improved later that day.

The consumer concluded herself, that the refrigerator’s insulation was burning and it caused the odor. No technician has confirmed this.

The consumer called the manufacturer and she was told that it had to be plugged in, so they could see what may be happening.

10/8/2021: Technician showed up, unscheduled and unannounced. The consumer explained what happened and told the technician, he could inspect the refrigerator in the garage, but she was not going in there. The consumer offered to open the garage, but said the odors were extremely toxic and could be fatal. She was not going to open it again. The consumer said that the tech. told her he would write it off. However, she later received information from the firm that indicated she would not give him access to the refrigerator.

The consumer has not had consistent use of the refrigerator in approximately 10+ weeks.

The consumer also stated that her bloodwork & ultra sound have not looked good and she believes the refrigerator may be a factor.

The consumer and her husband have hit their heads on this handle multiple times, when getting something out of the refrigerator.

10/16/2021: Recently, the consumer’s husband was lifting his head and hit it on freezer door. The husband suffers from brain bleeds. He was taken to the hospital for observation and released.

We followed the reset instructions to no avail. We called [REDACTED] the a service that repairs appliances bought from Lowe’s in Mountain Home, Arkansas. A qualified repairman came and said he sees this problem a lot in this brand of refrigerators. He managed to get the refrigerator working but was not confident it would last because again of the history of the refrigerator. On June 16th, 2021 the refrigerator stopped working with the exact same problem. We bought the side by side Frigidaire refrigerate August 30, 2019. The refrigerator was plugged into the wall, had adequate ventilation for the fan to work properly. We had to dispose of food both times due to this problem. The refrigerator is not even 2 years old.

I bought a Frigidaire Refrigerator Model # LGUB2642LF5, Serial # 4A13708663. As a former appliance dealer I know when there is a factory defect has occurred. This fits that category. The back has rusted from the inside out which has caused the water lines to freeze, mold on the refrigerator and wall and floor. Upon investigation I have found that this is a recurring problem and there is no fix. I had to go buy another Refrigerator and want compensation.

My refrigerator of than 3 years old caught fire and luckily went out before catching my house on fire. Items in freezer kept going soft and refreezing. Pulled out fridge to make sure all was clean under it when I noticed burn marks going up the back and wiring harness partially melted. Immediately unplugged and moved fridge to garage.

Ice maker was jammed and as I was moving around the ice my hand touched the bottom of the ice maker and severely burned my hand. It has now left a scar. Further research has indicated this is a common issue and there is no warning label in the manual or on the ice maker itself to indicate that there is apparently a heating coil that is open and unprotected, and can cause severe burns. I will be attaching photos.

I have a refrigerator ( 3 years old ) with an obvious manufacturing defect whereby ice forms on the outside back of the refrigerator and over time undergoes freeze / thaw cycles causing water to flow down the back of the refrigerator and almost dripping into an extension cord plugged into the other outlet for other counter top appliances. Thank fully I discovered this before anything serious happened.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 26.8 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator model FFHB2750TD in black stainless steel.

My toddler walked into the corner of the door of our new refrigerator and cut her head because the corners are sharp and metal. The product is a Frigidaire 26.8 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator (model FFHB2750TD). I had the French door open to get food out, and the bottom of the door is just above eye-level of our 1-year old. Not expecting the door to be open, she walked into it -- right into the corner. From this, she got a bruise and a small puncture wound. All the corners of all the doors/drawers are metal and pointy. I tried to bring this to the attention of Frigidaire and to other potential buyers in a review of the product on their website, and they would not publish the review.

The product, in the report: Fridgidaire water filter for Fridgidaire refrigerator / freezer Model PLHS69EESSN

The manufacturer has redesigned their water filters for refrigerator water / ice maker without differentiating the new part which is dangerous when used in older refrigerators from the old part that would work correctly - and does not make consumers aware of design change that causes a hazardous situation - the new part does not allow water to pass through the system - instead it allows pressure to build up at the filter making the ejectable filter a dangerous projectile upon ejection that shoots across the room with enough force to cause serious injury (perhaps eye or facial injury) if you happen to be standing in front of the filter when you eject it because no water has come out and significant pressure has built up in the filter instead. Normally the filter just unlatches and does not pop out with force - so the powerful high velocity ejection is completely unexpected by the consumer. The manufacturer does not offer to correct the issue and instead requires you to have your older refrigerator updated - and this is only apparent when you find the right knowledgeable employee - no recall notice was issued, and no information is readily available to make consumers aware of the issue putting the consumer at unnecessary risk of facial injury

The product, in the report: A Frigidaire refrigerator. Description on the receipt is FFTR1821TD. It was 65 1/8 “H, 29 5/8”W, &29 7/8” deep.

I opened my refrigerator and there was an awful smell. I saw what looked like soot on the orange juice and milk containers. I opened the freezer and there was a very strong burnt odor and the items in the there were covered with soot...2 packages of frozen vegetables, fish, 2 trays of ice cubes, and a bowl of cubes. I immediately unplugged the frig. I called a friend who used to own 2 appliance parts stores and asked if he knew any repairmen in my area. He gave me the name/number of someone he knew and worked with. The repairman came out the next day pulled the back off panel off the freezer and said he had only seen anything this bad once in the 30 years he’s been in business. He stated that the fan motor burned up and “fried” everything. The entire freezer was burnt up. He said there was nothing he could do...I needed a new refrigerator. I bought the appliance at Home Depot in Shorewood, IL. 7/11/2018, just over 2 years ago. I went on LiveChat w/ Frigidaire. I sent them photos of the fire. They said they would investigate and get back to me. They haven’t yet. When I send an email I get a response from Electolux saying a rep will contact me within 24 hours...but they don’t. I don’t care if it wasn’t under warranty it was dangerous and something that should never have had happened. In addition to paying almost $700 for a new refrigerator I had to replace over $100 worth of food and eat out of an ice cooler for 3 days. Thank You. [REDACTED]

While cleaning side by side refrigerator with a water and [REDACTED} dampened cloth, water drained down a hole that is supposed to be sealed by this silicon type material. 5 mins after cleaning smoke started coming from under the fridge. After further investigation and I discovered that the hole that is supposed to be sealed sits right on top of a electrical component called the compressor. A small amount of water dripped down onto the compressor and ignited a fire. This hole is where the water dispenser lines come up through the bottom of the fridge. After all was said and done I thought to myself that this could happen to anyone just cleaning this type of refrigerator. I have video and pictures of my findings. I’ve contacted Electrolux and I haven’t received any response.

Sitting at the kitchen table. I look up and notice smoke coming from the side of the refrigerator. I smell the notorious electrical burn smell. A family member comes into the room after I yell for help. She helps pull the fridge out from the wall and I unplug it. I look down and there is fire coming from the back base of the refrigerator! The fire went out after unplugged. Very lucky I was actually in the kitchen when this occurred. The kitchen/ house is all wood and would have most definitely caught fire. The refrigerator is obviously no longer functional. It is a side by side Frigidaire purchased new in 2014.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire French door stainless steel refrigerator

I bought a Frigidaire refrigerator from Lowes refrigerator on 6/4/17. Everything appeared to be fine and I was happy until December of this year. Particles of [REDACTED] started appearing in my glass of ice. I continued to find [REDACTED] in the ice but more frequently. It was at this point I realized that not only was I getting particles of [REDACTED] but that there were molecules of something floating in the container the ice was in. These molecules were never noticed before because it only appears after the ice is melted completely and water has settled in the glass. The water coming out of the water dispenser on the refrigerator is clear and clean. After taking out the ice bin and cleaning it, I started doing an extensive test on the ice. After testing it for approximately 3 weeks I realized that the situation was not getting better only worse. I emailed Frigidaire and told them of the problem. I told them that I had begun to worry that the problem was an interior issue and that the [REDACTED] on the inside of the refrigerator was falling apart and that I doubted it was something that was repairable. I also told them that it appeared that the microscopic particles were probably styrenes from the insulation they used inside the interior of the refrigerator. Their solution was to hire their repairman to fix it. We did at a visit cost of $95.00. He saw the microscopic particles in the melted ice (not in the water dispense on the outside of the refrigerator). He also found a white substance on the shelf that held the ice bin. He saw a rather large piece of [REDACTED] in the ice bin (not encased in water) and he also saw the smaller pieces of [REDACTED] in the melted ice. I have many of the pieces of [REDACTED] and have samples of the water from the melted ice saved. He called and order the parts to install a new ice maker. Frigidaire had told me they would sell the parts at 50% off but after their authorized repairman ordered the parts and left they called and told me that I would personally have to order the parts to get the discount. I told them that the authorized repairman had order from them. They finally agreed to pay 50% but now seem to not remember. Anyway the ice maker has been completely replaced on 2/3/20. On 2/4/20 I got ice out of the ice maker and 2 large pieces of [REDACTED] fell into my glass (7/12” and 9/12”) along with many particles of [REDACTED] and again the molecules and a white powder substance when the ice melted. Since the repair was made on 2/3/20 I have removed approximated 5 cups of ice from the ice bin. Every cup of ice has contained particles of [REDACTED] and molecules and white substance. Now on 2/8/20 the ice maker no longer is making ice. I am extremely concerned that the molecules in the ice are the chemicals from the insulation on the inside of the refrigerator. It appears that there is a small leak somewhere on the interior of the refrigerator, either in the waterline or at a connection from the filter. I am also very concerned that if this is case over a period of time the water has finally started disintegrating the [REDACTED] to the point where it is actually falling into the ice bin. I have expressed my concerns to Frigidaire but they have never asked to see any of this. They also seem to think that since it is out of warranty it really isn’t their problem. If we have been consuming styrenes for the last 2 1/2 years I do not feel that it is a consumers problem to solve but a problem of Frigidaire. We would have never known that they were even there if the [REDACTED] had not gotten to the point of falling apart. I realize that manufacturing issues can occur and that this could be an isolated incident, however Frigidaire feels that they are doing us a favor by offering us a discount on a new appliance. I know that styrenes do leach out of [REDACTED] and can cause many health problems. The only way this could be occurring is because the styrene molecules are dripping onto the ice cubes, now the disintegrating [REDACTED] is dropping onto the ice and into the ice bin. I felt that Frigidaire would show alarm and concern. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Now I am not only concerned about the long term affect this will have on my family but also am concerned about the other customers who may not be aware that this could occur. Frigidaire does not appear to take this seriously. I have had several calls with them about this and I have all the emails from them. I will attach them to this. I don’t know where to go from here. The following emails are in regards to this issue [redacted]-

[redacted] this is the information I have sent Frigidaire. There are a couple of typo’s - the 9/18” [REDACTED] should have read 9/12” but that is minor. Both particles are very large and appeared the day after you installed the new ice maker. I noticed that the ice maker did not appear to be making ice as frequently as it use to - now it is not making ice at all. I have gotten approximately 4-5 cups of ice out of the bin since you were here. All of the melted ice contained the microscopic particles and pieces of [REDACTED]. When I went to bed last night there were 5-6 pieces of ice in the ice bin. This morning there are still 5-6 pieces of ice in the bin. This is the total accumulation of ice since you were here on Monday. I understand that you have done what is expected but apparently it did not work. Frigidaire apparently does not consider the health of their customers to be a priority in this issue. As you can see they did agree to sell these parts at 50% off. However, the parts did not solve any problem. Now they think that 40% off a new one of their products is a solution. Of course they also know that their customers need a refrigerator so I guess they think I should jump with joy. I am not! Please let me know what your representative has said. I have been buying ice and keeping in a cooler for some time but this is not something I plan on doing much longer. I am amazed that a company as big as Frigidaire apparently does not take this problem seriously. This is not the responsibility that any customer should ever have to assume. I doubt that this is an issue that Frigidaire wants to go public but then they are making that decision. I went into this process making sure that it was indeed an issue. I have spent many hours attempting to help figure out the problem. No customer should ever worry about this type of problem! It really is a shame that they did not appreciate the effort that has been made to identify a very serious problem. The initial correspondence is at the bottom of this email - most current at the top. I appreciate what you have done and I look forward to hearing from you about any possible solution on your end. We have to get this finalized soon. This is no longer a puzzle that I want to put together. Thank you.

    [redacted]

Thank you [redacted] for calling as I know you are only in customer service and are there to pass on options offered. However as noted in my last email to Frigidaire I do not want to talk with customer service. I find it outrageous that Frigidaire thinks that by allowing me to pay anything for what is happening is going to make anyone happy. If what I have reported to you doesn’t appear to be a very serious problem, which should certainly concern Frigidaire, then I will have to find my own solution. I don’t know who in their right mind would be happy that they were being offered a 40% discount on a new appliance when the one they currently purchased from Frigidaire could possibly have been poisoning them for the last 2-1/2 years. I guess I should thank God that it finally got to the point of actually falling apart in larger pieces or I would never have even know that my family had been consuming the chemical makeup of [REDACTED] which has proven to cause cancer, neurological issues, hematological, renal and immunological disorders and more. [REDACTED] is a petrochemical which can contains benzene, styrene and other chemicals. These chemical leach out of the [REDACTED] into landfills and drinking water. What I have been telling you is that these chemicals appear to be in ALL the melted ice as we can see what must be microscopic styrenes in our glass. The only place this could be coming from is the interior lining of the Frigidaire. If so, it means we have been consuming these microscopic styrenes for a very long time - not diluted as if in a landfill but directly from your product. NOW the [REDACTED] has become so saturated and deteriorated that it is physically falling apart in our ice bin. Sealing it up with the new and improved parts which you want me to pay 50% of (however you told your repairman it would not be discounted) did not fix the problem. It appears the water which must be leaking inside the lining of your product is stilling leaking on to the ice. We are still getting physical, visible pieces of [REDACTED]. Now you are telling me that Frigidaire will do us a favor by allowing to purchase more parts at 50% off - which may or may not help fix the refrigerator or the other option of buying another one of your products for 40% off. Wow. I truly thought that by writing your company and attempting to explain what we were experiencing would be taken seriously. I thought I was happy with my refrigerator up until the time I determined it could kill me. I doubt that many people would have taken this route. I also doubt that any customer would ever expect to have to feel that it was their responsibility to determine if your product was possible of killing them - probably a slow death - before the warranty expired. If Frigidaire feels that it is the customers responsibility then you should tell them to check their ice on a regular basis - however they will have to hold it up to the light to see the microscopic chemicals. Well I have these microscopic chemicals and I will probably have a water test done on them. I also have a quantity of the [REDACTED] pieces. I am sure that you must have people who make claims that are out of line. Note this is not a joke, this is not a frivolous claim. I have spent several months now attempting to figure out what is going. I didn’t publish this concern to the world - I wrote to Frigidaire. Don’t insult me now by telling me that Frigidaire considers the health of their customers worth 40% of what they paid for the product. I have been in touch with your authorized repairman, [redacted]. He will be discussing this with his Frigidaire representative. I will be interested in hearing what solution they may have. However, I do not plan on calling anyone else at Frigidaire directly. If this appears to be important enough to your company, then I would appreciate someone in a position to understand this appliance to call me. I have spent too much time attempting to give Frigidaire the benefit of the doubt. I know that manufacturing problems can occur - however the manufacturer typically take responsibility for the problem - especially when it comes to the consumers health. Thank heavens car manufacturer continue to recall air bags long after the warranty is over because they are a possible threat. The only difference is I am tell you that this is actually occurring now. As you can tell I am more than upset at this point in this process. You have my number.

    [redacted]

Okay I am going to attempt to explain what I have now discovered over the last two months! I want you to understand that I have put a LOT of effort in trying to figure out what this refrigerator ice maker is doing. First of all your factory approved repairman was here on 1/8/20 to determine what the issue is. He called and ordered the parts (Air handler housing kit and cover) that were needed to fix what he thought the problem was. Apparently the parts must have been hard to get because after several calls to him to know when he would return (parts had not been received) he came back on 2/3/20. At that time he removed and installed the new parts. At that time he removed the actual ice bin, cleaned it and reinstalled it. I have talked to [redacted] (yesterday) - your authorized repairman and he suggested that I write and let you know what was going on because he doesn’t know what else to do. He did ask if we had replaced the water filter when he was here and I told him no. Since then I have gone to Lowes and bought another filter for $53.20. The filter is always changed when required however we attempted to replace the filter yesterday and it would not allow us to remove it. We have found that until the red light which says change filter appears we are not able to remove the existing filter. HOWEVER, the pieces of [REDACTED] that I describe below could NOT have possibly come from the inside of the water filter. They are way to big to come from the water hole in the filter. Plus this has now been going since before the last filter was installed.

The next day, yesterday 2/4/20, this is what occurred. I got some ice out of the ice bin thru the ice chute. When I did two large pieces of [REDACTED] (approx. 7/12” and 9/18” - both which were fairly thick not flat) plus many small individual pieces of [REDACTED] and obvious styrene microscopic particles were in the glass container that I put them in. I have them! The two large pieces are some of the biggest I have.

This is what I have figured out to the best of my ability. When the repairman was here the first time he took the ice bin out of the refrigerator. When he did he poured the ice out of the bin. When he did I found a rather large piece of [REDACTED] in the bin - it did not have ice around it but was sitting at the back of the bin. This would indicate to me that it was not frozen in the water at any time. The large pieces of [REDACTED] that I found yesterday also did not have ice of any kind around it but it fell into my glass in large pieces. The other pieces were stuck to the ice but did not seem to be inside the ice. The microscopic particles of course could not be seen until the ice melted and only when I held the glass up to the light. Please note that the water from the water dispenser is clear without [REDACTED] particles or the microscopic styrene particles. Therefore it is fairly obvious that there is no way this could be coming from the filter. It appears to me after much research that this [REDACTED] is falling through a hole above the ice bin (maybe the hole the water line comes thru) and falling into the ice bin. Please note that this has obviously been going on for some time because as I told you before when the repairman was here initially on 1/8/20 he removed the ice bin. When he removed the ice bin he ran his hand over the shelf that the ice bin was sitting on and there was a very fine white powder like substance on his hand. Note that the ice bin fits snuggly in the housing unit however this white powder was under the bin on the shelf. This indicates to me that it has had time to accumulate the powder like substance.

What I have done at this point is to collect and record the dates of the pieces I have retained. I have also taken a sterile pad and collected some of the white powder like substance that is in the bottom of my glass after the ice melts. I do not plan on buying ice until the refrigerator dies. I also do not plan on putting bought ice into the ice bin. I do plan to resolve this in whatever manner is required. I am greatly concerned that we have been consuming polystyrene in a powder form possibly since we got the refrigerator and now only notice it because of the large pieces which now float in a glass with ice and liquid. It appears that the interior lining of our Frigidaire refrigerator has disintegrated to the point that it is falling apart in larger [REDACTED] particles that we as customers can see it. Scary!!

Also from what [redacted] (your repairman) has told me the parts that he order to attempt to fix the problem were not half price. His wife was told that there would not be 50% off. He has not charged me for the service or parts that he did on 2/3/20 yet because he was going to see what could be done with his service representative. I don’t know why it would have been denied in the first place. However the problem is not fixed.

I would prefer not to hear from a customer service representative but would prefer to hear from someone who actually understands the problem we are having and can offer a solution.

    Thanks! [REDACTED]

Thank you for contacting us today, [REDACTED]. I appreciate the feedback. The provided feedback will be used to improve the look, performance, and quality of our future appliances. After further review, the best option is going to be the 50% offer discount toward any parts needed for the repair. The parts need to be purchased directly from us and within 30 days to get the discount. From our phone conversation, the recommended servicer contacted us for assistance and ordered the necessary parts to complete repair. If any further assistance is required, please contact our customer service department by email, chatting online at[redacted] Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 8 pm EST. Best Wishes, [redacted] We have had your service repair agent out here to check it out. He was very good and thorough. When he was here he verified that the insulation of the refrigerator was being dispensed into our ice. He also, when taking the ice maker apart had a rather large piece of the refrigerators foam lining fall into his hand (which I still have). He also verified that there were very small particles of debris in any melted ice (many of which I still have). When he removed the ice bucket he ran his fingers over the interior of the shelf it was on and a very fine white powder was on his fingers! He said he did not know what it was! This debris would not have been noticed if we had not been looking for it as the water dispenser is fine and the water is clear and clean. The water filter has always been changed when required. In fact it has recently been changed. Also when he removed the ice tray the gray circular piece of foam on the top was not only wet it was falling apart. However, the foam that fell out was obviously not that because it fell from above and was yellow. He will be back to try to fix the problem. This is obviously a very serious possible health concern. I firmly believe that the only reason we have discovered this problem is because we are finally getting larger piece of the interior lining (insulation) of the refrigerator, plus the sludge. I also believe that the very fine particles of debris have probably been there all along but was extremely small like a sludge . I was told that Frigidaire has redesigned the ice dispenser which I assume is because this is not a unique problem. But it is a very concerning problem as there was no recall. I appreciate the offer of 50% off but I really hope that there will not be a charge to fix such a major issue as I feel this is not or should not be a normal repair. I only hope that we have not been consuming your refrigerator insulation debris for 2-1/2 years! We have now paid $95.00 for the repairman visit and when he returns he wants to replace the water filter again so our out-of-pocket cost are already adding up to determine something that I hope also concerns Frigidaire. I appreciate your response.

Customer Information Message = When we get ice out of the ice maker there are small pieces of [REDACTED] in the ice. If we let it melt there are also particles of something floating in the glass. This does not happen when we get water. We noticed this within the last month. However it is getting worse. We have emptied the ice container and cleaned it but it has not helped. The contaminated ice could have been going on for a while without us knowing it but it is getting worse. It appears that the interior of the refrigerator, which I assume is [REDACTED] is somehow leaching into the ice. We are unable to locate where it is coming from but it is difinitely coming from the refrigerator. Please let us know what can be done. I know that the warraty is over but this is a highly unusual problem - one which I doubt a repairman can fix. [redacted]

Our refrigerator had a sustained electrical fire in the inverter circuitry that connects to the compressor tank. At 10:00 pm on October 30, 2019 I was in my kitchen to turn off lights. Immediately upon entering the kitchen I could smell smoke that was indicative of an electrical fire. I alerted my wife, and we started searching for the source. At that time there was no active fire for us to track down, but the smoke odor was strongest near the fridge. The fridge then activated its cooling motor and I immediately heard a sizzling sound from the underneath the fridge. I looked through the grate and saw a sustained 2-3 inch high electrical fire. I reached behind the fridge and unplugged it and the fire immediately stopped. I rolled the fridge away from the wall in its designated place and started inspecting the rear to be sure that there was no risk of it restarting while it was unplugged. Once I was sure it would not start again, I started looking for a possible cause. Eventually, while inspecting it I saw a drop of water land directly onto a electrical connector box for the inverter next to the compressor tank. I followed the source of the dripping water to an access port position directly above the inverter for the water hose that goes to and from the water filter. Inspecting this port on the inside of the fridge, I found that the foam sealant was no longer adhered to the interior housing of the fridge and water from condensation or other sources inside the fridge was leaking through this port and dripping directly onto the wiring for the inverter. Given the known wet nature of refrigerators, and the lack of design foresight in putting a hose port directly above some critical wiring, and then using insufficiently water-proof sealant to close that port, this appears to be a design destined to fail. Our fridge is ~3 years old. My hope is that our luck in being home and in the room when this started and catching it early can prevent more significant fires in other homes that have this refrigerator model.

The product, in the report: 2015 Stainless Steel Refrigerator

We have a 2015 Frigidaire Refrigerator model number FFHS2611PFA with serial number FA53612765 that I would like to submit as a hazard to the CPSC.

Complaint: We came home to find that there was a faint smell of smoke throughout our home. We could not figure out where it was coming from. Later that night, we were awoken by a loud pop sound and my husband, thankfully, came downstairs and realized the refrigerator was smoking. The flooring was red from sparks coming from underneath, and smoke had begun to consume our kitchen, causing the fire alarms to go off. My husband was able to reach behind the refrigerator and unplug it in time before an electrical fire could break out but the danger that was presented with us and 2 small children in the home is inconceivable.

[REDACTED] Response: We reached out to REDACTED to rectify the issue and was told that a certified technician needed to come and figure out the cause and since our warra nty had expired in 2016, it was possible that there was nothing they would do. I explained to them that if the refrigerator had just conked out or had some type of malfunction that caused it to stop working that I agree, there would be no recourse besides us repairing it or buying a new one. However, by being simply plugged in, this appliance put our lives and home in danger due to faulty parts.

Diagnosis: We did pay to have a certified technician come out to diagnose the issue and I’m attaching the service notes and images from the technician in this email for reference. This was a faulty issue within the refrigerator that the tech says is very uncommon (one in a million chances were his words) in which the silicone sealant has a void or gap that allowed liquid to leak into the compressor. The compressor from this exposure eventually exploded causing sparks of Freon, and the smoke in our home. Thank God we were home and that my husband came downstairs in time to unplug it before causing an electrical fire.

Outcome: REDACTED is unwilling to take responsibility and our goal at this point is to not have the same thing happen to another family with worse consequences.

Please let us know what else you made need from us and I will look forward to hearing from someone soon.

The product, in the report: Side by Side Frigidaire refrigerator, Model # FFHS2611LWC, Serial # 4A339105804. Dangerously defective part is shown as “starter & capacitor”. Photos of fried (electrically scorched) parts are available.

A little over five and a half years ago, we bought a brand new, side by side, Frigidaire refrigerator, model # FHS2611LWC, Serial # 4A33910504. Yesterday, 9/01/19, both my wife and I awoke to strong, hot electrical smells and ran into the kitchen. When it was obvious the smell was coming from the refrigerator, I immediately threw the circuit breaker. This was around 4:30 AM, and it was most fortunate that we both woke up. Several hours later, I had a neighbor come over and help me try to isolate the problem. I pulled the refrigerator out and took the bottom back cover off, to test for electrical problems. No sooner than I turned the refrigerator back on, then there were sparks and a flame coming from what I later identified as the “starter / capacitor” (please see attached photos), which my neighbor also witnessed. These parts, as can be seen, were completely fried and we were at the most a few moments away from a dangerous and potentially catastrophic house fire, and one that could have easily been fatal, especially at that time of the morning. As it stands, we lost the refrigerator, some food, and the convenience of having refrigerated food until 9/11/19, when a replacement refrigerator will be delivered. In reviewing refrigerator reliability and related sites, we found that at least a few other people had experienced “flaming Frigidaire refrigerators”! This is certainly a dangerously defective product and one that should be considered for recall, or at least warn owners. We used this product in the intended and normal use, so the defect and resulting near disaster is Frigidaire’s fault.

My wife was at home and heard a clicking and buzzing sound from the refrigerator, and it started smoking. She turned of the circuit breaker and the problem stopped. Once the unit was removed, and the power restarted, the electrical components on the back ignited on fire and started biting oil that had leaked form either a relay, capacitor, or transformer. It was large fire and lucky my wife was home otherwise there would have likely been a house fire as a result. I have videos and this is very dangerous. Contacted Frigidair and they indicated there are no recalls.

My ice dispenser on my Frigidaire refrigerator jammed, so I removed the ice tray/container (this is a normal procedure as this fridge has a removable ice tray for filling large containers). When I placed my hand on the icemaker to try and clear the jam, my finger came in contact with a coil underneath the icemaker that, unbeknownst to me, was extremely hot. My finger was instantly burned before I felt the pain and pulled it away. It left a very painful blister on my finger.

There are no markings on the icemaker to warn of hot surfaces, and the area where the hot coil is located is not guarded from inadvertent contact. It is even possible to contact this area with the ice tray/container still in place.

My refrigerator was being used a normal amount, not opened and closed very often. It was purchased in June of 2013 and this morning I woke up to an acid-like smell in the air. I thought maybe someone in the house had lit a candle the night before. I did not notice any smoke at the time. I performed my normal morning routine and then was heading out of the house to go to work and heard the sound of popcorn popping. I walked into our kitchen and noticed a flickering light against the wall behind the refrigerator. When I looked behind it I noticed flames shooting out of the back of the appliance. I pulled it out away from the wall and unplugged it. The fire was coming from the lower left corner of the back side of the refrigerator. Near the compressor. I called the seller and they gave me the number for Frigidaire and I called them and they said there weren’t any recalls and of course the warranty is only 1 year long. They offered to help me locate a repair tech in my area but, that is not going to happen.
