Hurt, care not known Made Mar 13, 2013, sent to the company Apr 10, 2013, published by CPSC Apr 24, 2013
The product, in the report: Model #: PVM1790SR1SS Serial #: LZ300280K Manufactured June 2012
I just spoke with your staff who asked me to submit the following by email which documents recent problems with a microwave and subsequent discussions with General Electric. Thank you for your review. [REDACTED] PRODUCT-PURCHASE BACKGROUND: Purchased GE electric range August 2, 2013, from Specialties Appliances & Plumbing Fixtures, 2800 West Eleven Mile Road, Berkley, MI 48072 (Phone: 248-548-5656). Invoice #[REDACTED]; ModelPVM1790SRSS (PVM1790S, 1.7 CF SS Profile 1000 Watt Convection OTR Microwave installed September 9, 2012. INCIDENT: 1-22-2013 Experienced minor head injury at home in kitchen while cleaning around microwave. I contacted GE Consumer Relations (800-386-1215) on 1-22-2013., Talked with [REDACTED], case manager. Informed her that I had hit/scraped my head on lower exterior metal edges of microwave while cleaning under the cabinets. I requested that she document my concerns regarding exceptionally sharp and pointed edges on the right and left lower front corners of the microwave. I stated that this was a problem to me and likely a problem other consumers might experience if they had the same product. I also asked if there was an after market fix or remedies for this problem. [REDACTED] took product info, assigned case #[REDACTED] for reference and told me she would follow up with me in a few days. GE 1-29-2013 RESPONSE: I called [REDACTED] on 1-29-2013. She stated that GE reviewed my comments in her report and that GE had issued no alerts as to appliance’s sharp edges and that GE did not intend to change or correct the problem I experienced with the product. [REDACTED] repeatedly stated that it was my job to exercise caution when using the microwave and instruct all users as to its hazard. I then requested GE send a service rep to assess the product. [REDACTED] said that was not necessary and my report to GE was adequate (they took my word) and no further action was required. I repeatedly insisted that GE inspect the microwave. [REDACTED] finally got approval for a service call. GE 1-31-2013 IN HOME SERVICE CALL: GE service rep ([REDACTED]), tech # [REDACTED], documented range as Model #PUM1790SR1SS, Serial #LZ300280K) in his home visit exit summary (invoice #[REDACTED]). His report states: “Complaint: Edge at LH/RH lower corner sharp. - The construction is to manufacture specs and does not pose a cut hazard unless head is impacted into the area”. [REDACTED] took photographs of the microwave. [REDACTED] said he had never heard of a complaint like this and doubted GE would fix the problem given GE makes thousands of these appliances. [REDACTED] knew of no after market fix, agreed that the edges were a hazard and that customers would have to keep head, hands, arms from contacting the appliance. GE 2-1-2013 FOLLOW UP CALL: [REDACTED] called at 1:20 pm today asking about the rep’s visit. I shared info from rep’s invoice. [REDACTED] said the case is now closed and I may be sent a customer survey. _________________________________________________________________________________________ The following is a copy of my March 6, 2013 email sent to the State of Michigan as requested by the Attorney General’s office. It documents my subsequent discussion with GE on March 6, 2013. The AG’s office also requested I submit a complaint to the CPSC. The AG’s File # [REDACTED]. [REDACTED], [REDACTED] of your office asked that I write to you with a follow up to my initial complaint filed with your office. [REDACTED], a GE Manager called today and left message at 10:06 am. I returned her call at 1:20 pm (ph # [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] said GE had reviewed my inquiries and my recent complaint filed with your office. [REDACTED] was less than courteous throughout the discussion and was adamant that this was not a GE safety issue. When I asked to speak with her management, the answer was no. Her statements and my comments follow. 1. She repeatedly stated that the GE safety team and staff engineer had found no faults with the microwave unit in question. GE had looked at similar units and determined that my unit did not present a hazard and met GE’s manufacturing specifications. 2. [REDACTED] said GE staff(s) had also reviewed the tech’s written assessment of the unit. It was GE’s opinion that there was nothing wrong with the unit. My wife and I were present during the tech’s visit and he repeatedly told us the unit had sharp edges and was a safety issue. Because this finding was not in the tech’s written note, GE is standing by its position that the unit is safe. 3. I asked what GE’s opinion was of the photos taken of the unit. [REDACTED] said she did not have the photos nor did she know about the photos taken by the tech. After my verbal insistence that GE should have reviewed the photos, [REDACTED] said she would contact the tech for the photos. Given the tech’s visit was 6 weeks ago, [REDACTED] wasn’t so sure that photos were even available and repeatedly suggested I take photos and send them to GE. No was my reply and if the photos were not made available by the tech, I said that GE should send the tech back to take additional photos. [REDACTED] said that was certainly not going to happen, that she was not sending anyone from GE to our home to reassess this matter or take photos. 4. She offered, repeatedly, because of my repeated concerns about unit’s safety (not unit’s performance), to remove and buy back the microwave at our costs. I said no repeatedly and had to remind her this was a safety issue for my family and potentially other GE customers. 5. [REDACTED] also offered some type of coverage to cover medical expenses. I said no, this was not a issue as there was no cut or laceration. Please call me at [REDACTED] if you need more information. Thanks for your assistance. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: OTR Microwave Oven
GE OTR Microwave self started and could not be turned off with the keypad. Magnetron was running as well as the vent motor. Opening the door of the microwave would not turn off the magnetron or the vent motor. Finally removing the power cord from the outlet stopped the unit. By that time the interior of the microwave was very hot. Thank God we were home and still awake and noticed the microwave had self started in time to take action. The glass turntable was too hot to touch. After everything cooled down, I plugged the power cord back into the outlet and the microwave immediately restarted. After leaving the power cord unplugged for 24hrs the power cord was again plugged in and the unit now functions normally, but I will not leave it plugged in. The GE technician came and determined that the control panel had an internal short and offered to replace it. Estimated charge $265.52. I ask him to determine if the new control panel was the same design as the old one or if it had been redesigned to fail safe when shorting out. He told me the control panel had not been redesigned so I am not willing to spend money on a design that is still defective and could result in a fire.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave
The microwave basically turns itself on, it self starts when it senses heat from the stovetop. The consumer says that she gets messages on the microwave that tell her to set the time, or have random codes on the digital display.
She says that the random messages would come one when she was using her stove top. The consumer feels that the heat from the stove top would make the microwave think that it is getting ready to cook.
She immediately unplugged it or hit the off button. This would make the messages go away. After this happened several times, she stopped using it altogether. When the microwave sends messages,s he hits the off button. Them she decided to unplug it permanently. She is afraid to use it or even keep it plugged into the socket.
She contacted the manufacturer who told her the unit is not on recall and there is nothing they can do.

The product, in the report: Over the stove Microwave
Microwave purchased January 2011 in Michigan. Around the beginning of December 2012 she heard a boom sound, couldn’t find source but that evening she was going to heat something in the microwave but when she opened the door, glass began coming out. She looked for a bullet hole because she couldnt’ find any reason the glass would be broken. Sears repairman couldn’t tell her what happened to it because he had never seen anything like what could have caused all the glass to break. She talked with friends about the incident and has just been provided a copy of reports of other microwaves glass in the door explosions and just wanted to report this one. She has replaced the microwave. She has not contacted manufacturer and does not intend to contact them. There have been no injuries

The product, in the report: White GE SpacemakerXL Microwave Oven, Model #JVM1440WH04, manufactured August 2005
Our GE Spacemaker XL Microwave Oven, Model #JVM1440WH04, which was manufactured August 2005, started to malfunction a few weeks ago. We started to use this microwave oven when we moved into our remodeled home in August 2008. The oven would sometimes start running when we closed the door after we had removed an item that we had heated up. We would have to open and close the door several times to get the oven to remain off when the door is closed. We tried to make the oven to stay off by depressing the “Clear/Off” button without any success. Other times the oven would continue to run after the time had expired and we would have to open the door to make the oven stop running.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave oven, Stainless steel
This report was prompted by the Consumer Reports article “ Microwave Mystery” March 2013
GE microwave oven model JES1142 purchased 8/21/07. In 4/08 I noticed that if I touched the top of the stainless steel cabinet the microwave oven would start.
GE repair was called and the repairman said “I have never seen this before”
A new oven, same model, was sent. This did not have a similar problem but died 1/4/13 and has been disposed of. It is actually stored in my barn.

My GE Profile Microwave/Convection Oven (Model number PVM1790SR1SS Manufactured March 2011) self started when no one was home and could not be turned off. We had to disconnect the power source. When we plugged in the power, it again started on its own; would not shut off with any controls; and did not shut off even when the oven door was opened. We have it unplugged while awaiting for a service call. I have recently read of microwave ovens self-starting, getting overheated and causing fire and damage. I do not want to wait until fire, damage or injury before reporting my concerns with this product.

General Electric microwave started it self in front of three witnesses tonight while we were talking in our kitchen. Kind of a freaky thing. It hadnt been used in hours. I unplugged it and being a reliability engineer thought someone should be interested in this near disaster. I’m not making a claim and will be happy to ship it for failure analysis. It would be a good candidate for root cause work to prevent a future fire someplace. Regards, [REDACTED] Quality and Reliability Engineer.

Purchased GE microwave approximately 3 yrs ago. Last week microwave started coming on when the door was opened. We unplugged it for several minutes, when plugged back in, it continued to do the same thing. We stopped using it immediately, and unplugged it, afraid it might cause a fire. My husband contacted GE,. They told him one option was to take the microwave back to where it was purchased, and they could send it back to GE. He called Home Depot, where the microwave was purchased, and they told my husband they would not return the microwave to GE because what GE told him on the phone and what GE had told them in the past concerning returns were completely different stories. We purchased another microwave on October 30th, 2012.

I would like to report a fire that started in my built-in over-the-range microwave on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The fire started in the control area (i.e., where the magnetron, transformer, wiring, etc. are located behind the key pad) of the microwave just after I had heated up a plate of food. I smelled something like burning plastic and saw that there was a fire inside that part of the microwave. I was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher by spraying through the vent along the top of the microwave. Thankfully, the fire department cleared the house of the smoke and removed the microwave to make sure the fire would not spread to my cabinets.

The product, in the report: GE Profile, spacemaker II microwave
I have a GE Profile spacemaker microwave. It is about 2 years old. The display suddenly went out (also no light on when you open the door) on Sunday, September 23, 2012. On Monday September 24, the display periodically flashed back on asking to reset the clock. I could actually reset it. Then the display would go off again. It kept doing this. While the display would go on for the short time, I could open the door and the light would be on.. I would hear a humming sound when I closed the door. Then a couple seconds later the display would turn off leaving no light again when the door was open. After a while I was in another room, I came back into my kitchen to smell electrical smoke. I looked at the microwave it was smoking. When you touched it, it was hot all around the microwave and on the inside. I immediately turned off the breaker. (I could not just unplug in since it is in a cabinet with a kit around it. When I looked on line about this, I was very disturbed to see it has happen to others. If I was not home, this could have started a major fire in my home. I am very grateful that I was home and I could turn off the breaker.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave Model: WES1450DN1BB, Serial No:RT945299B Manufactured August 2010
We have a GE microwave purchased in the late fall/early winter of 2010. It is Model: WES1450DN1BB, Serial No:RT945299B. On Saturday 9/23/12 at approximately 7:30 am it appeared to spontaneously turn on. We thought perhaps one of the kids accidentally hit a button. Today, 9/26/12 at 4:15 I left the house. Upon returning at 4:30 the house was filled with black smoke, and the microwave was running. So at some point between 4:15 and 4:30 the microwave turned itself on and could have easily started a fire. There was a message on the microwave saying “sensor error chicken pieces.” We do knot know what this means. We did file a report with GE at approximately 5pm today, 9/26/12, and informed them that we would be contacting the CPSC to file an incident report.

Was making microwave popcorn and the thing made the most horrendous sound and sparks lit up my entire kitchen, the sparks were coming from behind the airvent/and panel inside the microwave.
I thought maybe it was the popcorn and tried a bowl of water and it did it again even worse (dumb I know)
The microwave is clean and well maintained.
Upon reading other complaints on line i am finding this is a common complaint with GE microwaves. I am scared it will cause a fire or seriously injure someone.
I have had microwaves my whole life and never experienced anything like this, and never had a microwave that went belly up only a couple/few years after purchase like this piece of junk did.

GE OTR/Built-in microwave Model JVM1850DM2BB Serial No. VM900163B Exterior glass on door of microwave is either faulty or designed poorly - glass inside door has exposed edge and open. I tapped edge of glass when door was open with ceramic bowl and heard loud crack. I was sprayed with glass bits, pieces hit my eyeglasses, chest, went down my shirt and flew across my kitchen floor. I have approx.5 oz.of glass bits that were sprayed out from the glass door. For 15 mins. approx.after incident the glass continued to pop, crack and fragment across face of glass spraying glass powder down onto top of my stove/range. To protect myself and my home, I wrapped the front of the glass and edge with duct tape. This cannot be a safe design and/or this glass was faulty. As I shopped for a replacement microwave I noticed that many of the leading brands on the market (all of them displayed at local Sears) do not have a protective bracket around the edge of the glass that fits in the front door. That means that the glass is exposed near the handle - a high traffic ‘area’. I do not believe that these product lines as designed are safe.

The product, in the report: GE Model WES1450DN1BB, Black 1.4 cu ft/1100 watt sensor microwave oven
I purchased the unit on 2/3/11. Roughly July 10, I got an error that said that the keypad had shorted, and that the unit may require service. I unplugged the unit for at least an hour, and then it was fine. About 3 days ago, the unit turned on by itself. The keypad was not responsive, and I had to open the door or unplug the unit to get it to turn off. I unplugged the unit for a while, and then plugged it back in, and everything seemed to be fine. Early this morning, I woke to the microwave beeping. I got up, and it had the “surged” error on the display again. I unplugged the unit, plugged it back in, and it started microwaving again without any input from me. I unplugged the unit and went back to bed. When I got up this morning, I inspected the inside of the microwave and saw that the door and part of the inside plastic was burned. I am afraid that my house would have caught on fire if I had not woken up and unplugged the unit. I contacted the manufacturer, and they refused to do anything because it has been over a year since I purchased the microwave.

The product, in the report: GE Sensor Microwave Oven, countertop model JES1451, black, dimensions: 22” across, 16” deep and 12” high
I own a GE Sensor Microwave oven (countertop model) which is only 2 years old. At 3:00 a.m. when the microwave was not in use, it self started. I woke to a room full of smoke and the smell of burning plastic. The microwave was going by itself and the panel read “Sensor Error”. Flames had just erupted. Luckily I had a fire extinguisher nearby.

The product, in the report: GE spacemaer microwave
Have a GE over the stove microwave. On 5/21/12 I put a cup of tea water in the microwave, turned it on, and went into my office in the next room. The house started to fill with smoke and the smoke detectors went off. When I went back in the kitchen the room was filled with smoke. I was able to get to the unit and turn it off.
Charlestown Fire Company responded via 911. They looked at the walls with the thermal imaging camera and found nothing there. According to the firefighters the camera showed that all the heat was contained within the microwave. While the firefighters were there we put another cup of water in the microwave and turned it on. The room quickly filled with smoke.
My contractor and electrician came yesterday and looked at all the wiring. They assured me there was nothing wrong with the wiring. This is clearly an issue with the microwave.
I searched the internet and found out I am not alone. Others have had similar problems.
I am a paramedic and member of the fire company. For this reason I knew what to do and was able to minimize the damage. It appears others may not have been so lucky.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave with wall oven, black color Model Number: J TP86B0F4BB Serial Number: AH615475Q
This report is about the GE microwave (with wall oven) that was installed in our house during 2005. About two years back, the microwave stopped working, and the GE service person replaced a fuse (we paid for the visit and part). At that time, we brought his attention to the peeling paint inside the microwave. He said GE would not be able to fix it.
The peeling got worse day by day graduating to a situation that is very unsightly. It is highly hazardous from health point of view.
We contacted GE to request for a free replacement, in view of the fact that the machine broke down two times in less than 6 years, and the paint got ripped off. Clearly, it does not speak well of the quality and durability of the appliance.
We got the reply from GE that free replacement is not possible and we need to pay an amount of $992.
The purpose of this message is to enquire if you as a consumer protection agency, can intervene and resolve the issue.
I will be able to send you the picture of the microwave showing the damage, if you so desire.
This is the reference number of my communications with GE regarding this issue: Case #: [REDACTED]

The consumer says she used the microwave for the very first time after placing two medium potatoes in microwave. She pressed the potato sensor and the microwave went off after two minutes. Potatoes were uncooked, so pressed sensor again. Medium sized potatoes pierced with knife prior to placing in microwave. She walked into the kitchen and there she saw flames inside the microwave. The potatoes were on fire, her husband opened the door and got the potatoes out and he unplugged it. The consumer says that the microwave is blackened on the inside. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who is replacing the unit. A technician sent by the manufacturer told her not to use the sensor options.

I have a GE Spacemaker XL1800. It turns on every time the door is opened. This is extremely unsafe. I can’t believe there isn’t any redundancy to prevent this from happening. I called GE thinking this was so unsafe they would simply replace it. They told me it would cost $80 to have someone look at it and if the quote was too expensive they would give me a $100 rebate towards a new one. When I told them I’m not financially able to do this right now they told me to call back when I had money. Pretty ironic the phone number is 1-800-GE CARES.

We heard the microwave running and came into the kitchen to see it running and some type of message was on the screen (not a normal operating message). Caller is reporting that his microwave turned self on and caught fire in the middle of the night (sometime between 11:00PM March 8th, 2012 and 3:30AM March 9th, 2012 causing cabinets to burn, etc.
Caller awoke to the smell of smoke and of burnt bread. (He normally stores his bread in the microwave and there was a loaf in the microwave at that time. He and his wife had been sleeping for approximately five hours. His 22yr old son was also home, but sleeps downstairs, his parents woke him. The house was full of smoke, no flames were coming from the microwave and caller could not distinguish where the smoke was coming out from the microwave. One cabinet door damaged, microwave destroyed and callers may have suffered possible lung injury.
They opened all windows and doors to let smoke out, then unplugged the microwave and took it to the garage where it sits waiting for manufacturer to come look at it Tuesday, March13th, 2012.
Caller would like to have the microwave replaced by the manufacturer, his cabinet repaired and would like a satisfactory explanation

The product, in the report: GE Spacemaker Over the Range Microwave Oven.
My father (93 years old) was heating dinner in his GE over-the-range microwave Saturday night when he smelled smoke. He opened the door of his microwave and smoke poured out. He saw it coming from the mesh-like area on the interior wall of the microwave behind the control panel, and saw a yellow, flickering light through the mesh-like area, which he interpreted as a fire behind the control panel. He called the front desk of his condo building for assistance. The maintenance man asked him not to open the front door of his apartment to air out the smoke as he was concerned it might set off the building’s smoke alarms. By this time, the fire had died out and the worker unplugged the microwave.

The consumer says that when he closes the door to the microwave the power goes out. The only way to activate it is by removing the plug and replacing it to the lower outlet after a couple of minutes. This makes the power come on. The manufacturer told him that it sounds like a power surge issue. He says their is nothing wrong with the outlet. Other times, the machine will start on its own when he closes the door. He leaves the unit unplugged because it is unreliable. He spoke to the manufacturer on Wednesday 2-15-12 and they told him the unit is not under recall and he would need to have it repaired or replaced.

We own a microwave with an oven combo from GE. The microwave has started up randomly three different times. The first time there was a bad smoke smell. GE has replaced parts three times. I don’t feel that the oven is safe and we can no longer use it.

The product, in the report: JVM1750 GE over the range microwave, 1.7, manufactured in Malaysia, nov 2009. Black
on 1/22/12 our GE Spacemaker model JVM1750 serial # VS 901264B manufactured in Malaysia on Nov 2009 FREAKED OUT! At 3 am I was awakened by a loud sound of a series of “beeps”. When I went into the kitchen the microwave (over the range) was running and the control panel read “F3”. My husband was able to disconnect the microwave and leave it unplugged. In the morning he tried it again, it FREAKED OUT AGAIN! it wouldn’t stop running and the smell of burnt wiring enveloped the kitchen. That day I called directly to GE and asked if there was a recall and explained about the possibility of a fire with my microwave. The nice young lady told me there was no recalls, no safety bulletin, no safety technician bulletin and nothing was wrong with the microwaves. Soooo, we started looking for another GE microwave (yes, we are gullible) to replace our two year old “no recalls” microwave. Last night I called GE again because I read several blogs that talked about GE micros that run without control, fires, and once again the nice young lady told me that there is no danger of fire, and offered a discounted price on a new one. Later my husband did some research and found a class action lawsuit that started in 2009 against GE over the range microwaves that ran without control and caught FIRE! Must someone lose their life in a fire caused by this GE appliance before CPSC does something? HELP

My GE microwave starts by itself and gets very hot! It does it in the middle of the night and during the day. I have to unplug it between use and am thinking it should be recalled. I’ve only had it 8 months. It’s a Model JES1451.

The product, in the report: Rangetop microwave oven. 1.6 KW One metal shelf inside held by 4 plastic clips
We have a GE rangetop microwave. On 2 seperate occasions, the plastic clips that hold the metal shelf has sparked causing flames and melted the clips. We had to call GE to report each incidence and to obtain replacement clips on both occasions. The first occurance was over a year and a half ago, the most recent was the beginning of this year.

The product, in the report: GE Model PVM2070DM4WW SN HV302789B Over the stove microwave
New GE Microwave Model PVM2070DM4WW SN HV 302789B about 2 week old. Last night microwave started running all by its self. I had to unplug from wall to clear it. I cleaned selection screen with wet paper towel and dried. This morning the unit did the same thing again. I called GE customer care and they told me to open and close the door 3 times. If unit still continues to start on it own, call repair. What happens if it starts doing it when we are on vacation for 2 weeks next month? Google has several GE’s that are causing fires, 7 in Florida per what I read. This microwave should be on a recall list or at least tell people about the problem before they buy one.

The product, in the report: GE EMO3000cbb2 over the range microwave oven
On September 19, 2011, my GE Microwave Model EMO3000cbb02 sustained fire damage. The unit had been used for 30 seconds to heat a child’s milk, and then sat idle for 5 minutes. At that time, there was multiple “popping” noises followed by a “buzzing” noise, multiple flashes, and then the area of the front plastic shelf support burst into flames. Luckily we were at home at the time. I am a former firefighter, and was able to disconnect the unit from it’s power source, and the flame ceased. I immediately took a photo of the unit’s damage with my cell phone. I believe this incident is similar to one that was reported to this office in June of this year report number 20110617-F3ABE-2147478129. Subsequent photos taken of damage and manufacturer’s label inside the unit.

The product, in the report: Black GE “Sensor Microwave Oven” - Model #WES1450DN1BB (Serial #TS936466B) ... 1.4 cu. ft. / 1100 Watt
I purchased a GE “Sensor Microwave Oven” on 4/10/2011 to replace my 7 yr. old microwave (which still worked but not the carrousel). My husband was died of cancer so the microwave was only used for occasionally reheating foods or veggies and melting chocolate/butter, etc. Last evening I suddenly heard beeping & checked - my microwave was beeping & the digital readout said “keypad was shorted out”. (Note: I had not used the micro for 2-1/2 days - IT WAS SITTING IDLE!) I opened the door and the insides were SCALDING HOT and smelled HOT too (a fire hazard in the making - thank goodness I was @ home!)! I tried working the keypad but nothing worked so I unplugged it. After leaving it cool down I plugged it in again & it told me to “set the clock”, I did and it seemed ok (I was still hesitant). Within 2 minutes, while I was standing there, it SUDDENLY STARTED on it’s own! Again, none of the keypad buttons worked so I unplugged it and it is STILL UNPLUGGED! I will not use this appliance again. I sent an electronic email to GE on their www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/contact/form_concern.htm last evening. I received an auto-reply: “Thank you for contacting us through www.geappliances.com. We have received your eMail on 9/7/2011 at 09:50:00 PM EST. We regret to inform you that we are currently experiencing longer than usual response times. A Consumer Specialist will respond to your inquiry as soon as possible. Sincerely, The Consumer e-Response Team GE Appliances” (they gave me a “reference number [REDACTED]). I’ve searched the internet & find there ARE OTHER REFERENCES to people having the same problem with micro beeping suddenly, for no reason. The micro is only 1 yr. and just under 5 mos. old + not used that often & NEVER used to cook a full meal (or frozen dinner either). This is A FIRE HAZARD - thank goodness I was @ home!

We have an 18 month old over the range microwave oven that starts by itself. This is definitely a safety issue. We looked on the internet and saw that other people have also had this problem. It is a GE oven, model # jvm1740dm1bb. We feel this unit should be recalled before it starts a fire.

The product, in the report: Over the range Microwave.
My GE Spacemaker Microwave Serial Number EMO 3000CBB02 caught on fire when not in use. The microwave was plugged in, but was not being used. A vibrating sound was herd, it started smoking. I unplugged the machine. I contact GE whose came out to investigate, indicating that this should not have happened. I contacted them because of the safety concern. I did not want the machine fixed since there was no reason given why it should not have done this. I never received word back from GE whether they would recall or investigate further. The machine has been removed from my house and is in storage. It can be used for investigation if necessary. If I had not been home, then the machine certainly would have caught the house on fire. Below is the full details of the letter that I sent to GE.
GE Company Appliance Park Building 6, Room 129 Louisville, KY 40225
May 7, 2011
Dear Sirs:
I have a GE Spacemaker Model Number EMO3000CBB02 over range microwave that caught on fire. The Microwave caught on fire without being used. Fortunately, I was home at the time and was able to switch the dedicated fuse and unplug the unit before my house caught on fire.
I am storing the unit for investigation. If I had not been home, I would not have a house nor dog because of the units malfunction.
Since there is no product recall on this unit, I am assuming this is not a known problem. However, this is a very serious problem that could have resulted in significant loss, including the loss of life. Therefore, I would hope that GE would take it upon their safety experts to investigate this appliance and to issue any possible notice where applicable. I would hate to see people lose their life, pets, or homes to such a tragic malfunction.
Please let me know where this unit can be sent for investigation, or if GE will pick up this unit at my home. Or if GE would rather have me contact the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, then I can follow through with them if I do not hear from GE by the May 31, 2011.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
