The product, in the report: GE over-the-range microwave, matte black finish
Microwave blew in the middle of the night while not in use. Sleeping upstairs, my family and I woke up to an awful smell and come to find a very smoky main floor. We eventually found it was clearly coming from our over-the-range microwave that had the door open and clear burned appearance on the cabinets above. The microwave no longer has power (no clock or buttons work ), then I promptly unplugged the unit.

No one hurt Made May 7, 2026, sent to the company May 12, 2026, published by CPSC May 27, 2026
The product, in the report: A 1150W freestanding microwave. Black with stainless steel trim.
The day prior to the incident, staff member A recalls seeing the message ERR on the microwave display. Staff member A reports pressing the cancel button and the message disappeared with no further incident.
On the day of the incident the majority of the staff in this small office had ordered in tacos to celebrate taco Tuesday. As such, the only reported use of the microwave was by one individual in the early morning to heat oatmeal. No other use was reported. As staff member A entered the kitchen to retrieve her lunch, she noted the microwave was making a noise like it does when typically operating. Staff member A reported no food in the microwave and the message PF on the display screen. She pressed the button to open the door and the message disappeared. Staff member A left the door in the open position and exited the kitchen.
An unknown time later, staff member B entered the kitchen to retrieve a snack from the refrigerator adjacent to the microwave. Staff member B reported that she almost hit her head on the now open microwave door. Subsequently, she shut the door to the microwave, retrieved her snack and exited the kitchen. An unknown time later, staff member C entered the kitchen where staff members D and E were sat at the table eating their lunch. While walking in, the three staff reported hearing what they described as an explosion and a loud pop followed by seeing dark smoke rolling out of the inside of the microwave. Additionally, a plastic food splash guard that was stored on top of the microwave became airborne and landed approximately 4 feet from the microwave. Staff member C responded by closing the door to the microwave while staff member D retrieved a fire extinguisher, and staff member E called 911. Staff member C took the fire extinguisher from staff member D and reopened the door. Upon doing so she reported additional smoke inside the microwave. Upon deploying the fire extinguisher staff member C recalls seeing flame present behind the perforations in the inside of the microwave behind the control panel. The fire department arrived and took the microwave outside. Once outside the firefighters noticed flames in the same inside area of the microwave behind the control panel. They used water to extinguish the flames. The fire departments investigation team was on scene to document the incident.

The product, in the report: This is a GE Profile microwave in their Spacemaker line. It is a smaller size designed for compact spaces. It is marketed as an countertop unit, but is approved for built-in (hanging or undercounter) installation using manufacturer provided trim kits. It is a stainless steel finish, dimensions are 24 x 12-1/8 x 12-7/8. The SKU is PEM31SFSS.
A GE Profile PEM31SFSS microwave failed in a way that could have caused a fire if I was not home to cut off the circuit breaker when the failure happened. The microwave is less than 5 years old and was installed undercounter in a wood cabinet. The model is approved by the manufacturer for built-in installation and was using the manufacturer provided trim kit. The microwave was not in use at the time of the incident. The display went out, the control panel and lights were not responsive and the unit was making a buzzing sound heard similar to the sound when the microwave is running and the magnetron is engaged. The unit, the cabinet and the counters were very hot to the touch. The thermal cut-off did not seem to have engaged as the unit continued buzzing.

The product, in the report: GE Appliances Household Microwave Oven, stainless steel, Dimensions: 12.875 H x 21.75 W x 17.75 D, UL Listed 54NJ E49643, Rated output: 1150W
I used my GE free-standing microwave to heat up food. It turned off after closing the door. I left into another portion of my house. When I went back into the space with the microwave about an hour later, the microwave had turned on with the door closed and had probably been running for about an hour. It smelled awful and was extremely hot. I unplugged it, used oven mitts to remove it from my house to the outdoors.

The product, in the report: GE JVM6175DK6WW 1.7 Cu. Ft. Over-The-Range Sensor Microwave Oven
I replaced a GE JVM6175DK2WW model microwave oven with a newer model, GE JVM6175DK6WW model microwave. The older model had a cool-to-touch LED cooktop light. I was not aware that the new model, manufactured in 2025, uses a 50 watt halogen bulb. When the new microwave felt quite warm inside without being used for several hours, I began to investigate by feeling the inside of the oven, then the outside. As my fingers passed over the light source, I received minor burns on several fingers. I was alarmed that the outside of a microwave oven could get so hot. I checked the owners manual and found no warnings or cautions about this burn hazard, and no such warnings appear on the device. I thought that halogen light bulbs were no longer used in household products because of the many fires they have caused, and I am concerned about not only the personal burn hazard, but the risk of fire from something that hot. I searched online for similar reports and found many complaints in reviews at [REDACTED]. Some reported temperature measurement up to 270 degrees F, and some reported burnt paint inside the oven over the light bulb. I believe any household appliance that is that hot even when not operating is defective, hazardous, and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: GE Profile PEM31SFSS 24” 1.1 cu. ft. Capacity Built-In 800 Watt Microwave Oven, Sensor Cook with GE-JX827SFSS Deluxe 27” Stainless Steel Built-In Microwave Trim Kit
GE Microwave Model PEM31SF3SS - Door interlock switch is defective and the unit’s Magnetron runs by itself non-stop when the door is closed. There is no fan, lights, or control panel indications and only a very low, imperceptible hum so it’s not obvious it is operating by itself. The unit gets extremely hot on the inside and I believe it is a fire hazard, especially if it is mounted overhead in a wood kitchen cabinet. It is designed to be installed this way with the optional trim kit GE-JX827SFSS. I have also reported this issue to GE Appliances.

The product, in the report: Ge Microwave oven counter top 12.13”H x 24”w x 12.8” D
My GE Microwave Oven model #PEM31SF3SS does not turn off the microwave generator unless it is unplugged or the door is left open. This was discovered when the unit overheated after use. The microwave magnetron runs as long as the door is closed and is plugged in. If food is left in after a cycle is completed the fan and light turn off but the microwave generator stays on and the food burns until the door is opened. We contacted GE and they sent a technician who validated the situation and said there was a stuck relay which would need to be replaced.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven
Taken from info center I am writing to you because we have always trusted GE and have bought all GE Appliances for many years, including refrigerators, air conditioners and microwave ovens. In 2020, we purchased a GE Microwave oven, (Model JES1145SH1SS, Serial number FR265276A, 950 watts, 1.1 cubic feet) from PC Richards. It worked well for almost 4 years. I realize that the warranty is only for one year, but we wanted to write to you because this microwave has a safety issue. Last week, it went on fire and almost burned our kitchen. Smoke and fire came out of the Microwave and we could have gotten hurt. Luckily, we unplugged it and got the fire under control and we had to throw it out. I did take pictures of the inside burned microwave due to the fire. Is there anything you can do to make sure that this microwave does not go on fire and hurt other people, and compensate us, as now we had to purchase a new microwave oven? We bought another GE Microwave, as we typically like the company’s products, but we would like to make sure we do everything we can to prevent anyone else from having this happen to them, and we unfortunately, did have to pay out of pocket to replace the combusted microwave. I’m enclosing some of the pictures from the fire inside this product. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
(10/11/2024) Please Be Advised, we have notified the President of GE Appliances about this incident. His office called me and they were very concerned about why this microwave went on fire. We paid $92.00 for a new microwave. GE reimbursed us in the amoung of $60.00 (Partial reimbursement).

I pushed the off key to stop the microwave. It appears the oven stopped heating but the turntable and light were still running. I had to pry the door open with a screw driver. I went to GE’s website to order a replacement. Now this microwave is ~ 2.5 years old and was built in with my house. Reading the customer reviews on this microwave on GE’s website reveals big problems with the open door button malfunctioning and with the magnetron in many cases almost starting fires in people’s homes. I am stuck buying the same model due to the space in my home the microwave is built into. Someone should look into this and possibly issue a recall.

The product, in the report: G.E. Convection Microwave Model 9179K1SS
One of our U.S. military occupants at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan staying in our on-base senior enlisted apartments stated they were reheating food in a GE PVM 9179K1SS Convection Microwave in a plastic container, setting the timer for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Occupant was in the bathroom at the time, and heard the microwave beep, indicating the food was ready. They checked the food and discovered it was still cold. The occupant then returned the food to the microwave and selected the reheat setting and went back to the bathroom. 2. While in the bathroom, the occupant described smelling something burning but could not identify what it was or where it was coming from, prompting the occupant to open the bathroom door. The occupant noticed white and black smoke coming from the microwave but did not see flames. They opened the door, removed the food, and set it on the counter, believing the removal of the food would resolve the issue. 3. The local smoke detector activated. 4. Occupant then opened the window and attempted to wave the smoke away from the detector. While doing so, the building/facility fire alarm system activated, indicating (to them) that it was a larger issue than what was observed, and withdrew the room, closing the door behind her. The microwave caught fire. Highly likely that the origin of the fire was in the microwave, behind the control panel. Highly probable that the cause was due to an electrical short or arc. Fire sprinkers in the building activated. Immediate fire damage to the kitchen at the point of origin, which was the microwave and cupboards above and adjacent. Fire damage was external to the food cooking cavity. Additional smoke damage to the kitchen and room as well.

A potato overcooked and then burst into flames inside of my microwave oven and caused a lot of smoke. The product was a 6 year old GE Over the Range Microwave (model JVM6175SK1SS). I (female adult) had used the “potato” feature button for one small red potato and assumed the sensor would cook it accordingly. My daughter noticed the fire and smoke when she entered the kitchen and then she called for help. I was able to open the door to the microwave and put out the fire with baking soda and then opened all windows and doors to abate the smoke. It is important to note that there was no sensor error with signal prior to the fire. I was in the adjacent room and would have heard the signal.

GE Advantium 120 Microwave Oven was less than one month when the glass door spontaneously shattered while using Convection Banking Mode. Only the interior glass shattered, outside glass remained intact. I was standing directly in front of the microwave at the time so I was able to immediately turn it off when I heard a “pop” and saw the glass cracking. Luckily the outside glass didn’t shatter as I am researching this type of incident, and this has happened. Had this happen I would have been sprayed directly in the face. ** I am reporting this due the serious nature of the incident and it is important to track this information.

The product, in the report: GE microwave
Have a GE microwave that the interior lining started to flake. This occurred on the top interior and at the door. At the door area, it caused the plastic on the door to melt. I reached out to GE and was told they would give me a coupon towards a new one. They also said, “I can certainly understand your concerns with the paint peeling in your microwave. I definitely understand how frustrating this must be for you. I did some research on it and found that it a common issue among all brands. Minor chips to the coating on the microwave’s interior cavity will not affect the product’s performance. However, if the coating is actively flaking or peeling anywhere inside the oven cavity (including under the turntable) discontinue the use of the microwave and replace it. GE Appliances does not have an approved method of repair, and the microwave is not repairable.” Everything has a limited life expectancy but this could have caused a fire down the road.

The product, in the report: GE Builtin Microwave
Yesterday while walking in the kitchen I heard a humming sound. It took a few minutes to realize that the sound was coming from our GE builtin microwave. To my surprise the microwave was on and working even though the inside light was off and tray was not rotating!
When I opened the microwave door there was some smoke and a strong smell of burning. I took out the plug and put it back and again microwave started on its own so we took the plug out.
Thankfully we were home when this happened or it could have burnt down our house. Microwave is only two years old and is $450. We called GE but they refused to have someone come and take a look for free since it’s outside the one year warranty period.
We went to the store today and bought a new one. The first thing store salesman suggested was to contact a lawyer to sue GE for not responding to such a dangerous situation because of a fault in their appliance.
I understand if it stops working and GE doesn’t want to help for free since it’s out of warranty. But in this case microwave is starting on its own and it could have burnt down our house if we were not home. I think GE should look into this and should have pay us for this risk.

Fortunately I was home when it did this because if I had not been home, it would have caught fire and destroyed my home. Even after a few minutes before I was able to unplug it, it was beginning to emit a burning smell. Thus, both General Electric microwave ovens were defective and represent potential life threatening hazards. They should be recalled and/or taken off the market.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave
Caller stated that the microwave caught fire while cooking a potato. This incident occurred a few mins after the content was cooking. He stated that the unit started emitted smoke and sparks, which caused the alarms to go off. He stated that he noticed that the content was emitting flames, however, the fire was contained within the unit. The fire damaged the interior and the cost to repair would be the same as purchasing another microwave.
Caller stated that the retailer contacted the manufacturer but he was advised that they were unwilling to work with the store. The microwave is currently with the retailer.
Caller feels that this microwave is a fire hazard and should be reported.

The General Electric Above the Range Microwave Model JVM6175DKWW serial nr. ZM210273B was purchased on May 7, 2020 to replace a [REDACTED] Above the Range Microwave that we had used for fourteen years. The door locking mechanism failed to lock the door and so we had to obtain a replacement. This unit successfully heated one or two potatoes many times over its life. A key feature was a rectangular tray that moved from side-to-side in operation. This feature allowed the magnatron energy to be more even over the item being cooked than a microwave with a round tray moving in a circular motion.
We purchased the General Electric unit on May 7, 2020 and used it in a similar manner to February 19, 2021. It heated one or two potatoes just fine until February 19, 2021 when some sort of microwave system failure occurred which resulted in smoke and fire to the extent that it basically destroyed itself Fortunately, all the damage was within the unit. The user guide information provided by General Electric via a PDF file was much less informative than that provided by the [REDACTED] model we used for fourteen years. It is an interesting that the [REDACTED] microwave life span was fourteen years and the General Electric microwave life span was only eight months.
A month elapsed before I was able to get Dewaard & Bode to take action with me and replace the microwave. I obtained a [REDACTED] microwave as a replacement as I have no interest in having a General Electric appliance in my home. I sent a letter to the owner of Dewaard & Bode on March 23, 2021 to obtain a copy of the internal company damage evaluation and his opinion of the situation. No response of any kind has been received. Verbally I have been told that the parts alone equal the original cost of the unit. In my opinion, the appliance company has some responsibility for this matter, but General Electric has a more serious responsibility to address. Based on the third party sample of General Electric’s attitude, I have chosen this incident report route to make them accountable for this problem.
So far I am not very satisfied with the [REDACTED] microwave website to obtain more information about their unit as the user guide information is poorly done.

Upon my use the GE countertop Convection/Microwave top and side of the case reached temperature of 174 degrees F within 10 minutes of use at a setting of 425 degrees F. during use to bake a bread. I consider this elevated temperature to be a burn risk and a fire risk depending upon what material is in contact with the oven case surface. Have since removed plastic object from the top of the case and avoid physical contact with the case surface either top or side. No injuries noted. Plastic material melted and is deformed.

My GE over-the-range microwave caught on fire while I was at work. It had not been used for hours. My daughter was at home and noticed the smell of hot electrical insulation. Daughter called dad to come home, he arrived in 5 minutes as smoke detector went off. Fire was behind keypad of microwave, flames visible. He was able to unplug and quickly remove it from the wall and carry it outside, as cabinets were getting hot. ABC fire extinguisher used but difficult to get to source of fire inside microwave. GE Model JVM7195DF1BB, manufactured Feb 2014. If he wasn’t able to come home within 5 minutes and immediately unbolt hot microwave from cabinets, carry it outside, we would have had damage to cabinets.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave GE Appliance Silver outer Model- JVM1540SM5SS
Hello, I have a GE Appliance Microwave and it caught fire internally and luckily I was able to put out the fire and disconnect the plug. After reaching out to GE they informed that their safety precautions should have prevented this but in turn it actually didn’t and could have gotten worse if my friend didn’t make me aware of it because I was not paying attention to the microwave since I didn’t think it needed monitoring. During the time of the fire, i was warming up a mug of water for my tea but then a blaze of fire started to come out the top of the machines inside .
This is a GE appliance , Over the range Microwave..> Model : JVM1540SM5SS
I have the microwave still and photos.
I am most outraged with GE’s response, they told me the safety precautions should have prevented it but they will offer me a discount on a new one. With this unit now gone, I felt this should have been replaced or options of replacements should have been provided but not for me to have to buy a new one for the mechanical failure.

The product, in the report: GE over the cooktop, built in microwave with fan Model 2F224616B
A couple months ago my microwave starting turning on as soon as I would open the door, put something into it and close it. I didn’t push any buttons to start it or actually have to put anything in it, I just had to open and close the door. Then I noticed when I would use one of the sensor buttons, like Reheat or Potato, it would beep as if it were done, but keep running. It was over cooking food to the point I would have to throw it out. I believe it was arcing sometimes as well. The turning on automatically was intermittent and I thought it had actually resolved itself, until last week. I put a potato in the microwave, pushed the Potato button and went into the living room. All of a sudden I heard the microwave making weird noises and when I went into the kitchen the potato was totally on fire inside the microwave. I haven’t used the microwave since, but it smells like smoke especially when I open it.

It was loud and I thought there was something in it. [REDACTED] my son’s friend said there was a fire in the microwave. I opened the door it stopped running and I put out the small flame. Not understanding that is was going on on its own I shut the door again so I wouldn’t hit my head cooking on the stovetop. It happened again, then I realized I could not shut the door. It burn all the way through the top of the microwave and almost into my cabinets. I unplugged it after that, but I didn’t sleep well. I called GE they would not take it from my home they only cut the cord and offered me a discount on buying a new one. I will never spend money on their stuff again especially since they didn’t help me at all. It was very scary.

The product, in the report: In cabinet microwave oven
We purchased a brand new home in 2017 that has all GE appliances. Today our microwave caught on fire without any type of metal being in it. My wife had to run into the garage to get me, she had a bowl of butter that she was trying to melt. I know that appliances break, but they should not be catching on fire within two years of being purchased new. Something needs to be done to ensure the safety of our public. What would have happened if one of my daughters had been using it while we were at work? GE says that their warranty is good for one year and that’s fine, but to have appliances catch on fire before two years is crazy.
Big made in China right on the opening. Shame on GE for allowing their name to be put on this product.

The product, in the report: GE 1.4 cu ft Countertop Microwave Oven (Black)
My GE microwave oven has started to self-start periodically throughout the day, and very randomly. The microwave is less than 3 years old. It has been flickering off and on by itself for 3-4 weeks now. It sometimes self-starts for 1 min, then off for 1 min, then back on again for 1 min, then off again, and will keep going off and on, or sometimes if it starts running by itself it won’t stop, even if pushing buttons, unless it gets unplugged. This is unacceptable and a clear malfunction in the product, especially considering it is not even 3 years old. It could cause a fire for sure which scares me but I cannot afford another microwave and don’t feel I should have to. It should be fixed by the manufacturer. Before I knew it could cause a fire, it had been plugged in still overnight. I am lucky that me and my 4 kids have not lost our home or our lives. This is not right. I cannot list 1 incident date since it self-starts daily and very randomly so I will just use today’s date since it is still going on. Thanks, Liana

I was using the microwave to heat up [REDACTED] Microwaveable Mac n Cheese. I followed the instructions and added water up to the line and heated uncovered for 3.5 minutes. My top plastic part of the microwave somehow caught on fire and was burning the top of the microwave. Luckily I was able to put out the flames and no other damage was done except for the microwave itself.

Microwave oven magnetron turns on when microwave not in use. Potential fire hazard. Luckily my wife heard the humm of the microwave magnetron running. I could not stop it with the clear or stop button, however it did turn off when I opened the door. An electrical burning smell was noticeable through the microwave vent, I’m glad we caught it when we did or I’m sure we would’ve been dealing with a fire.

The product, in the report: GE over the range microwave oven.
After using the microwave, the door was closed and the microwave began to run without any buttons being pressed. The interior light and fan were off, but there was an audible buzzing that stopped when the door was opened. It spontaneously resumed again each time the door was closed. The plate inside was getting very hot. With the door open, the microwave was unplugged and plugged back in. This time, the microwave spontaneously began running with the door open. The microwave has been unplugged since the incident. It is ~18months old, thus out of warranty. But since it failed in a way that could have been very dangerous for my family and/or home, GE is offering an ~20% discount on a new product. Given the potential consequence of this product failure, this response seems insufficient. I’ve seen numerous other reports of similar GE microwave models failing in the same way (including an attempted class action lawsuit in the Michigan US district courts, Case No. [REDACTED]). So I’m not inclined to roll the dice again until GE determines the cause of this problem.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Microwave Oven Model # PEM31SMISS Serial # AR902922B Purchased June 2008
Our GE Profile Microwave caught fire Thursday night, March 2nd. My wife was simply putting butter in a microwave safe container into the unit to melt it. When she hit the start button, the right side of the microwave caught fire. She yelled to me, we shut the unit off but the fire continued. I opened the unit and was able to extinguish the fire. I then removed the microwave from the cabinet it was set in and got it to the garage so it would pose no further risk to our home. I called GE Consumer Relations Friday morning and they took all my info and asked me to send photos which I did right away. I asked the representative to confirm by email that she did receive the photos and she said that she would. Well, even after a followup email to her, I still never got this confirmation. I’m guessing I’ll be able to contact them come Monday but I did try to call today but their CR department is closed on weekends. Additionally, doing some online research, this is not the first GE microwave to catch fire. There have been a number of issues where the microwave caught fire without the microwave in use, and several I saw when it caught fire when the homeowners weren’t even in the home, causing major damage. I’m just glad we were home when this happened as we had no damage other than the microwave itself.

I wanted to make you aware of the fire hazard danger that exists with this OTR microwave. This was a brand new unit in our new built home 2 1/2 years ago. Recently my wife called me while I was away from the house because it was making strange noises. No one was using the unit, there was no time on the display, the inside light was off, she could smell something burning and the inside of the oven was extremely hot. she could not even touch the inside walls or the turntable. I had her unplug the unit and investigated later upon returning home. I put a small pat of butter on a paper plate inside the oven, closed the door and plugged it into the power outlet. The unit appeared to be off, but I could hear the magnetron running and the butter was melted. While the door was open, the magnetron was still engaged and running. I opened and closed the door several times in rapid succession, and the control panel went dark (off). The unit is now unplugged permanently, but this is a MAJOR FIRE HAZARD. Had my wife and kids been sleeping when this happened, my family could have suffered major injuries or have been killed.

The product, in the report: GE Slate Over the Range microwave
We purchased our 2nd GE Slate Over the Range microwave on 02/05/2016 to replace the defective microwave (same manufacturer, brand, and model) we had previously had a fire hazard Incident with. We reported the 1.it microwave to CPSC. The new microwave was installed in our kitchen on approximately 02/20/2016. By 04/20/2016 this new microwave was doing the exact same thing, it would turn on all by itself and run, but with no inside light showing it was operating and the turntable did not turn. It would only make a humming noise. We stopped using the microwave and completely unplugged it by 04/30/2016 because it did this multiple times and without any clear pattern or reason. It was extremely unsafe to even leave it plugged in. It could and did turn on at all hours of the day or night. We did have a GE authorized repairman look at the unit. He deemed it was unrepairable, and he showed us that the microwave had burn marks that indicated some type of sparking or arcing had taken place. We have not decided IF we will accept the same model or a different model from this manufacturer. When asked, they denied knowing of any other problems.

The product, in the report: GE Slate Over the Range Microwave, model #JVM1750EP2ES; serial# LZ 229233B used only minimally, like for warming water for tea, rewarming coffee cups, etc.
The GE Slate over-the-stove microwave was installed in April 2014. By the end of Oct. 2015, it was turning on and running for hours without any person turning it on. Consequently, the unit ran several times and we weren’t aware of it because the Inside light did not come on and the turn table didn’t go around. It barely made any noise · just a hum- when it would start by Itself. In fact, the last time we were able to use it the unit turned on by itself several times that day. The last time It ran for more than an hour because we didn’t know it was on. By the time we found it, out cabinets were extremely hot to the touch. We had aGE approved service technician look at it, their recommendation was to replace it. They said the circuit board was bad. It did have burn marks on the inside of the microwave cabinet, just like the newer model we just bought. No one was injured. But, the unit did run without anyone turning it on, and it could have caused our cabinets to catch fire if we had not realized the unit was running.

Microwave oven starts to heat up itself after closing the door. Originally it happened in March 2016 and then it stopped working. Every time, I closed the microwave door, it started to heat up. I left the door open for a day and then microwave started to work fine again. The same incident happened again in June and then microwave completely died. I called sears repair service and they decided to change the magnetron. Microwave started to work again until today. I started to smell burning plastic in my kitchen. After little investigation , I found out that the smell was coming from the microwave. Inside of microwave was really hot. If I leave the door open it stops heating up but as soon as the door is closed microwave starts to heat up. I am concerned that this microwave can cause fire if same thing happens at night when me and my family is asleep.

Frequently the microwave power and light would come on when the door was opened. This happens when the microwave door is closed, the microwave power is off, and the light is off. The manufacturer says this may be due to a door sensing problem and to unplug the unit and open and close the door three times. This did not affect the problem in any way.

When my wife returned home after an approximate 40 minute interval, she noted that the convection element of the oven was overheating and emitting a strong burning odor. She unplugged the oven. If she had not returned home, we believe the overheat incidents could have been catastrophic since the surrounding wood cabinet was very warm to touch. The most current was 2/2016 for the replacement board. She requested to get a replacement because she feels that it is a fire hazard. They informed her that they would be coming out for another replacement which will make the 4th time.
Caller feels that this microwave should be recalled.
CHRONOLOGY 1/25/2014 Bought Microwave at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Installed roughly a month later.
8/17/2015 GE Technician replaced smartboard after she called GE and explained the problem:microwave stayed on even after caller turned it off.
11/30/2015 GE Technician replaced smartboard again because new one malfunctioned within 3 months, causing the microwave to stay on indefinitely.
2/2/2016 Smartboard malfunctioned again (3rd time).
2/9/2016 Sent GE ([REDACTED]) an email asking for a replacement microwave oven since this one has already been repaired twice with no success. He called back and left a voicemail that callers could not get a replacement but he would offer her a discount on a new one. He also said he’d have the GE technician get in touch with the engineering department to see if there was something else he should be doing to repair the oven.
2/15/2016 GE Technician replaced smartboard again.
3/1/2016 Fourth smartboard malfunctioned (in less than a month). She called [REDACTED] and told him microwave should be recalled, and she wants her money back. Never heard back from him.
3/22/2016 Sent email to [REDACTED] outlining the entire chronology and asking for my money back.
3/23/2016 He called and left caller a message stating that he had read the email, and GE would not be able to give them a refund, but they could contact them to get the microwave repaired again.

(2/28/16) The consumer heated up some food, then he removed it from the microwave and after closing the door he noticed a humming noise coming from the microwave.
The consumer noticed that this happens each time he uses the microwave. After searching online the consumer read that the humming noise could be the magnetron (heating element) that continues to stay on. The consumer placed a bowl of water in the microwave and closed the door. The consumer states he did not set the timer. After 20 second the consumer removed the bowl of water and states that the water was very hot. The consumer has unplugged the microwave.
The consumer is concerned that the microwave could be emitting high levels of radiation and also poses a fire hazard.
The consumer contacted Home Warranty of America and arranged for a technician to examine the microwave on 3/3/16.
The consumer does not plan to contact GE since the microwave is out of warranty.

The product, in the report: over the counter microwave
This caller is reporting his over the range microwave with dom March 2007 purchased from retailer around 2008-2009 in Ohio.
Around January 24th, 2016 the caller’s wife was planning to re-heat some food but when she turned the microwave on she and her caller who is her husband noticed smoke coming out of the vent, the husband turned the unit off and unplugged it.
He took it to his garage, turned it on to check it but it immediately burst into flames inside the unit and behind the control buttons.
He contacted the manufacturer sometime around January 26th - 27th, 2016 then scheduled a service tech.
The service tech came to his home the very end of January or first week in February 2016.
After the service technician checked the microwave out he stated that the transformer and the magnetron were at fault and that even if the unit could be repaired that the odor of burning plastic and electricity would not dissipate.
He stated that he would submit his report and the manufacturer would contact them.
The manufacturer did not contact the caller within a couple of days so he and his wife contacted them.
They were informed that because of the age they would offered a $288 microwave unit for the price of $320 which would include removal of the old unit, delivery and set up of the new unit.

The product, in the report: GE stainless teel over the range counter wave MODEL NO JNM1541SM5SS SERIAL NO SZ 203731
we had got GE over the range stainlessteel microwave model no JNM1541SM5SS serial no SZ 203731 L with the new house in 2013. the microwave caught fire on 18th dec 2015 on its own and caused burn to our baby sitter and blisters to our kitchen cabinet on the top of microwave. We complained to GE customer relations and they sent out technician who looked at it and confirmed that it was fire hazard and submitted claim for free replacement. next day we get a call from consumer relations saying that the free replacement has been rejected and its not fire hazard.
Our concern is that if our baby sitter wouldn’t have acted in timely manner and put out fire the baby sitter and baby both would have been burnt and kitchen would have been burnt completely’ GE microwaves were under recall and lawsuit in 2008 but they still continue to endanger peoples lives. they should be ashamed of themselves and don’t even have courtesy to replace it for free.

The product, in the report: over the range microwave oven
(11/19/2015) The consumer stated that she was in the kitchen around 2:00 AM. The microwave came on by itself. The monitor indicated “express”. It did a count down to zero, then stopped.
Less than one minute later, the same thing happened. This happened for about three or four times. The consumer touched the microwave and discovered that the inside and outside was hot. The consumer opened the microwave door and closed it. The microwave came on again. This time the monitor indicated “short circuit-need to service”. The consumer unplugged the connection.
(11/19/2015)The consumer contacted the company. She was referred to the Safety Department. The consumer spoke to [REDACTED], who opened a case-number 1371321. The consumer was advised that someone would come out to check the unit. The consumer was offered a $220 new microwave totaling $263.00 with 20% discount, including delivery, tax, installation, and haul away.
(11/25/2015) The technician came out and advised the consumer that the problem was in the control panel. He also advised the consumer that sometimes the short-circuit is caused by the stove. The technician told the consumer that the repair would cost $199.
The consumer added her main purpose is safety, but their interest was to repair or replace; after no explanation from repairman who said he was not an engineer and it was above his pay grade. The consumer also added her interest is: Does this product need to be recalled? For dangerous fire hazard? If she was not at home when it [microwave] came on by itself what would happen?
The consumer noted she could not unplug [microwave] as it was too high, and she almost called the fire department, but got a neighbor who helped her unplug [it].

The product, in the report: We purchased a GE Convection Microwave and product trim kit as the unit is installed in a cabinet (vs. countertop). When using the convection mode, the exterior of the unit gets extremely hot. There is a return for the hot air coming out of the unit, but it is expelled approximately an inch from the metal trim kit. There is no venting for the hot air (there was in the prior model) so the trim kit gets scorching hot. We contacted GE. Over a period of a couple months, they have sent two technicians to assess the unit (as well as a new trim kit (the same one we already had), which is not the issue as it still doesn’t safely release/vent the hot air) One of the technicians tested the temperature of the trim kit from the exterior and the temperature of the metal was 160 degrees (the unit had been turned off for a brief time when he took the temp). We independently purchased a surface thermometer and have taken readings hotter than that. You are unable to touch the exterior as the surface is so hot it would burn you. We have asked GE to do a return / credit us and we will purchase a traditional microwave. They refuse to do so as they insist the unit is working as it is supposed to and is not a safety hazard.
