The product, in the report: Black GE Sensor Household Microwave Oven, Model WES1450DN1BB
While sitting in my living room, I heard the microwave running. It should not have been used at that point so I checked in the kitchen and found it running with nothing inside. My children were present and denied touching the microwave. I assumed it was an accident, stopped the microwave and forgot about it. Last night around 3 a.m. I awoke to a beeping sound. I checked the kitchen and once again found the microwave running with nothing inside. It was very hot and smelled of an electrical fire. I turned off and unplugged the microwave.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave Oven Model: NM1540DM5WW, Serial No:DA212876L
My daughter was microwaving popcorn on 07/23/15 when the microwave started on fire. My wife called GE and a repair person came out on 07/28/15, during this call we were told if the problem was a health and safety issue the microwave would be replaced. The repair person came out on 07/28/15 and stated that GE’s computers were down and that someone would contact us in 24 hours. No one contacted us so on 07/30/15 I called and e-mailed GE. The representative said they would give us a $200.00 microwave for $159.00, that is only $41.00 off. Once again we were told if it was a health and safety issue it would be replaced. The fire starting is a huge safety issue it could have started my house on fire. I did e-mail GE and they stated that they would get back to me but have not done so. We know the microwave was manufactured in 02/2013, shipped to American in 08/2013 and we bought it towards the end of American’s going out of business sale in 02/14. The microwave needs to be recalled and mine should be replaced. Re: Case: [REDACTED], Model: NM1540DM5WW, Serial No:DA212876L Thanks for your assistance, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE OVER THE RANGE MICROWAVE
GE MICROWAVE MODEL JVM7195DFBB. SN RD210833B. over the range microwave did not shut off automatically when reheating 2 pizza slices.
Selected COOK TIME 20 SECONDS AND START. AT THE END OF THE CYCLE THE MICROWAVE DISPLAYED YOUR FOOD IS READY AND WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR WHILE IT WAS RUNNING AND THEN SHUT THE DOOR TO GET IT TO STOP. SELECTING THE CANCEL OFF BUTTON DID NOT WORK TO SHUT IT OFF. MTRIED SAME FUNCTION AGAIN FOR 10 SECONDS AND IT DID THE SAME THING. HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR AGAIN WHILE IT WAS RUNNING TO SHUT IT OFF.
UNPLUGGED THE UNIT AND HAVE NOT USED IT SINCE THIS HAPPENED.
CALLED GE TO EXPRESS CONCERN THIS IS A HAZARD. THEY ARE SENDING TECH OUT ON 8/17. IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE MELTING PLASTIC ON THE INSIDE. WILL ALSO REPORT THIS TO GE TECH. ASKED TO HAVE THE WHOLE UNIT REPLACED BECAUSE IT IS NOT SAFE AND WE HAD IT ONLY FOR 5 MONTHS WHENIT WAS PURCHASED NEW AND WAS TOLD IT HAS TO BE LOOKED AT AND REPAIRED FIRST IF REPAIR IS GOING TO COST LESS THAN A REPLACEMENT, THEN THEY JUST TRY AND FIX IT.
WE DO NOT USE IT MUCH AND THIS IS A HAZARD AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES LIKE THIS WITH A NEW MICROWAVE.

The product, in the report: Microwave and Oven Combo
The microwave turns on its own even when not in use when the door is closed. For the time being (till it is repaired) we are keeping the microwave oven door open to prevent running it when not in use. This is a safety fire hazard as the cooling fans are not coming on when this happens.

Oour GE Microwave/Convection oven spontaneously started. We were not using the device at the time although we did happen to be in the kitchen. The buttons on the device would not allow us to turn off or reset the machine and the door wouldn’t open. We finally had to turn off the electricity in the kitchen and pry the door open with a screwdriver.

The product, in the report: Sensor Convection Microwave Oven
I purchased a sensor convection microwave oven October 2012. My daughter asked why is the microwave so hot and not one is using it? I went over to the microwave which was not in use and had not been in use for several hours and it was so hot we couldn’t touch it. I am grateful, we were home and my daughter happened to feel the heat as she walked by. My husband immediately went outside and shut off the circuit breaker and allowed the microwave to cool. He then totally removed the microwave. I felt like it was extremely important for me to file this complaint for safety reasons of others and their families. Please contact me for any questions or concerns. I have reported this to GE via email today.

The product, in the report: GE JVM1540DP1WW Manufactured January 2011White over the range microwave
My GE Model #JVM1540DP1WW over the range microwave turned on by itself. The cook time registered 1 minute and counted down, but I was unable to stop or clear it. The light turned on and the turntable activated so I can only assume that it was actually heating and running. I had to unplug the unit to turn it off. After researching online, I found quite a few posts containing the same complaint from other consumers, some of which resulted in fires inside the microwave. Luckily, I was in the kitchen when my unit came on so it only ran for a few seconds before I disconnected it. I have always used GE products for my appliances and have never had issues with their other products, however, I feel that this particular over the range microwave is a hazard and will not be purchasing any more of their microwaves. I’m only glad that I was at home when this incident occurred.

The product, in the report: GE Space Saver Microwave
Our microwave self started a few times before I removed it and purchased another. It also would sometimes spark and smoke. The first time I saw a spark and smelled smoke was within the first month we owned it. I then googled this GE profile - spacesaver (model # PEM31SM4SS) online and discovered that many GE microwaves had caught fire. I chose to remove our microwave and purchase a new one because it wasn’t worth the risk of the whole house burning down. This product should definitely be recalled and GE needs to be stopped from making microwaves until they figure out what is wrong.

The product, in the report: Our GE micvrowave-covection Profile Advantium 120 The model is PSA1200RBB 02 Serial AZ300466K Manufactured January 2012 We purchased it in December 2013
Our GE micvrowave-covection spontaneously started while not in use. Thursday April 9th 2015 we thought we smelled someone baking bread. Then it began to smell like plastic burning. After investigating we found the oven element was on and “baking” rolls stored in it that were still in the plastic bag. Upon opening the door our smoke detector went off. Now any time it is plugged back in and the clock set, the element turns on by itself unless the door is open. Shutting the door has the same result. GE’s service number suggested unplugging it of 1 to 1.5 minutes. This had no effect. The unit is a direct replacement of the original that was installed in our motor home. The model is PSA1200RBB 02 Serial AZ300466K Manufactured January 2012 We purchased it in December 2013

No one hurt Made Mar 20, 2015, sent to the company Mar 30, 2015, published by CPSC Apr 13, 2015
The product, in the report: GE Microwave
I bought a GE Microwave on November 1st, 2014 from Home Depot. The microwave was installed 2 weeks later. It wasn’t used at all until December 25th, 2014. On March 15th, 2015 I received a call from a tenant telling me the microwave caught fire while making oatmeal. I immediately called GE and made an appointment for the repairman to come and look at it. On March 17th, 2015 the GE repairman came out and stated the microwave was repairable and that he would retrieve the part from his truck. When he came back, the microwave was plugged in and turned on. Within 6 seconds the microwave caught fire a 2nd time. The repairman called the GE engineer and provided me with a case manager number. He stated to me, my father and a tenant (who is a residential insurance agent) that the engineer agreed that the microwave is to be replaced. I stated I would not sign anything as this case should not be closed as the productive is defective. If he relayed that information of the second fire, while he was on my property, there would be no need for this complaint as the microwave would have been removed. That is not this case, so he then left.
I called the case manager and was told that the technician’s notes were that the microwave is perfectly repairable. The technician lied. That microwave is a fire hazard.
On March 18th, 2015 I filed a complaint against GE Appliances with the Better Business Bureau. I received a call from [REDACTED] (GE - Georgia Representative [REDACTED] phone- contacted by the better business bureau to handle my complaint) and he repeated the technician’s notes that the microwave is repairable even though it caught fire and that operator error exists. I told him that the technician was unprofessional, laughed at the idea that we think this is a fire hazard and that is incompetent. [REDACTED] and the technician do not understand that 2 fires (not an arc, not a spark,) but a flame with smoke is unsafe. I demand that this microwave be recalled and that I should be entitled to a refund.

GE Spacemaker Microwave is 18 months old. Started melting the plastic cover over the interior vent fan about 6 months ago. Had already checked, and the interior of the oven was clean, no grease build up, but it kept melting the plastic cover. Today while heating a serving of mac’n’cheese the plastic actually caught fire inside the microwave. Son noticed and immediately unplugged the unit preventing a full on kitchen fire

My microwave automatically starts when the door is shut. I have a neighbor that also has the same problem. I am afraid this could be a fire hazard especially if it starts and no one is home. The product, in the report: Microwave - GE model: PEB7226SF1SS, serial: MD207184N, manufacture date July 2014.
At approximately 9:51 am on February 19, 2015 at the [REDACTED] located at [REDACTED], Melville, NY 11747 had a fire alarm activation. The home is a group home for the developmentally disabled. The Melville Fire Department responded to the house. At the time of fire alarm activation there were no individuals home at the time, nor were any staff present in the house. The Fire Dept. responded and found a significant smoke condition that caused several smoke detectors to activate. After investigation the fire department found the source of the smoke to be the microwave. It appears that the microwave in the kitchen suffered a short circuit and started to burn/overheat. The microwave caused a significant smoke condition, inside bottom of the microwave and the counter top in the kitchen had significant discoloration and due to heat damage. The microwave was plugged in but NOT in use at the time of the fire. The microwave was purchased in the beginning of November of 2014. The microwave was a GE model: PEB7226SF1SS, serial: MD207184N, manufacture date July 2014.

The submitter is filing the report on his mother’s behalf.
On 01/07/15 the submitter’s mother woke up due to a noise and noticed that the unit was running on its own. Since then when the submitter’s mother would use the unit it would run on its own after she closes the door. The submitter and his mother feel the unit poses a fire hazard.
On 01/27/15 the submitter spoke with the firm (case #[REDACTED]) and informed them of the incident. The firm told the consumer that they would send a technician and the repairs would be free of charge since it was a safety hazard.
On 02/11/15 the technician examined the unit and told the submitter that the unit needed a replacement part. The technician told the submitter that the issue is a safety hazard but the firm would have to give authorization to provide repairs free of charge. However, the submitter contacted the firm on 02/12/15 and was told that the issue with the unit was not a safety hazard. The submitter spoke with [REDACTED], who informed the consumer that the replacement part would cost $300 and it would be additional for labor costs. The submitter is very upset and feels the firm should repair or replace the unit free of charge because it poses a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: GE, over the range, microwave oven. Model PEB2060DM2BB, manufactured April 2011 S/N: GV 301101 L
In recent weeks have experienced abnormal operation of a GE over-the-range microwave oven, model PEB2060DM2BB, manufactured in April 2011. First problems were the microwave would not respond to keypad controls to stop the operation. Only way to stop was by opening the door, but closing the door, the unit would start again.
This evening, with nobody in the kitchen, I heard the microwave come on and it stayed on until I opened the door. Researching on the internet seems to bring back many occurrences of GE microwaves starting spontaneously.

The product, in the report: GE 1.6 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave Oven Model: JES1656SRSS
This report is related to the GE JES1656SRSS microwave from General Electric.
Last week we noticed the circuit where this microwave was connected the fuse was open (standard 20A). I didn’t notice anything obvious and I plugged back the microwave and it worked as usual. few days later I heard a very strong humming from the microwave just after it stopped working. I couldn’t figure out then why it was doing that noise until I touched one of the sides of the oven and it was extremely hot. I carefully moved the microwave and all the enclosure was too hot to handle (I decided not to open the door anyway) and when I tried to disconnect the microwave from the power outlet I noticed the power cable was also too hot to handle so I used an oven mitten I unplugged it. When I touched the plug I noticed it was too hot to the point it melted the plastic enclosure of the plug, I got a small burn from that but it didn’t require further care. If I wouldn’t have noticed or disconnected the microwave I’m sure it might have caused a fire.

GE Café microwave oven model number CVM2072SM3SS mfg date Mar 2011. Problem is the oven start on its own, posing a safety risk. It also will return an error message reporting there is a “short in the control pad” although the problem could be related to the control board too. The cost of the touchpad is closer to purchasing a new one, cost prohibited. These are considered “durable products” with long life spans. Sure reasonable repairs from wear and tear are expected. This however is outside reasonable, or rather designing and selling a product which has one feature which is over 50% of the products values is NOT reasonable. And if it must be that way then it should be very durable. Especially when it has to do with safety (this product starts up when not home or asleep.) Imagine if the brakes of a $20,000 car cost over $10,000 to repair after 4 years. Could a consumer rely on the repair to be any better. We are taking on the risk of ending up with $20,000 in repairs if there is any risk of the repair repeating again.

The product, in the report: GE - 1.6 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave - White Model: JVM3160DFWW
Incident occurred Sunday January 4th, microwaved was used for 8 minutes to heat/thaw leftover ham.....then placed steamable microwaveable bag of mixed vegetables for 4 minutes.....went to upper level of my home...came back down stairs and home was filled with yellowish smoke and electrical smell.... determined microwave was source of smoke...but it was not the food or the cooking chamber that was on fire, Nor the food/food bag. Food bag was not even hot...barely warm. (Cavity and exterior actually look like new despite The chamber having been filled with smoke) Chamber was filled with smoke but no fire...smoke and extreme heat was coming from control panel side of microwave and heat could be felt all over cabinet side. wood was so hot to touch we believed it would catch house on fire. My husband unplugged it and unbolted it and removed from the cabinet to prevent house fire. We contacted GE and asked if there was a recall on the model and was advised there was no recall. then i explained what happened and was transferred to a consumer agent. She advised an authorized service agent we would bring the microwave to them. RRR is the service agency in Bedford VA. Servicer advised they would get to it as soon as they could and would then advise what is wrong with it. We have not yet heard from the servicer or GE and had no report from them as to the problem. Felt we should issue a report as we have seen other complaints online about this model catching fire.

The over the range microwave oven was not in use. It came on by itself as if the “1” digit on the touch pad had been depressed. It showed Express Cooking in the display and turned off normally after one minute counted down. This happened at least a half dozen times during the day, until we figured out what was happening. It is pretty clear that the touch pad is defective and it can decide the “1” digit has been depressed at any time.

The unit had not been used all day and the only portion of it that was turned on was the light that shines down on the caller’s stove.
Caller was not in the kitchen but smelled smoke from outside, returned to the kitchen and saw first a blue type smoke going up to the ceiling from the unit and that there had been so much heat at the top of the microwave that charred, blackened pieces of plastic had dropped down onto the glass revolving disc.
He quickly turned everything off.
The consumer added he called the manufacturer (GE) and made a report with them..They sent a technician to his home..Consumer noted he was told the unit was not repairable, and there was no failure analysis done.
There were no injuries
This caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them as quickly as he creates this report

I put duct tape across the front to prevent shards from falling out, because the outer glass was cracked as well. Some small slivers were on the floor so I swept those up.
What I didn’t see was a glass border around the edge of the door. It was shattered. Those pieces fell when someone opened the door to see the damage inside. My daughter stepped on one.

I bought my GE 1.4 cu ft 1100 watt microwave oven model # WES1450DN1BB 2 years ago. I got up one morning last week and heard a beeping sound and found my microwave had come on. It was very hot inside and warm on the outside. I had to open the door for it to stop...wouldn’t respond to buttons. I unplugged and left it off for several hours and plugged it back in...set the clock and several minutes later it started on its own. It is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven
I reheated a slice of pizza in my microwave using the 30 sec. button. Soon after it started the microwave began making a humming sound. At the end of 30 seconds, the timer stopped, the turntable stopped and the light went off but the humming continued and I could hear the pizza continue to sizzle. Next smoke started coming out of the vents and the microwave itself was getting hot. Finally, my neighbor came over and unplugged the microwave. The food inside was seriously burnt. It is out on the deck cooling off.

The microwave became too quiet and I realized the blower (I think) wasn’t on and my cup came out very hot after only 15 seconds. I unplugged it and and plugged back in and reset clock which did not fix it. It was 2 days past the one year warranty and GE would not honor it.
I tried one more time to use it to cook rice, but it shut off after about 1 minute, was extremely hot in the oven, and there was a burned odor. I unplugged it and will dispose of it.
I believe this oven is a potential fire hazard.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave over the range oven, 16 1/2” H x 29 7/8” W x 15 1/4” D
Our microwave oven started on fire the evening of July 30, 2014. The microwave had been on about 1 to 2 minutes when we saw a flicker in the upper part of the microwave. We turned off the microwave immediately. There was a flame in the ceiling of the microwave, which burned a hole.
The microwave was a GE Spacemaker over the range oven. Model JVM 1540 DM5 WW and was slightly over a year old as it was installed on July 13, 2013.
GE sent a technician to diagnose the problem. The technician said the stirrer blade above the ceiling of the microwave must have come loose and started arcing, causing the fire.

This is our second GE microwave within one and a half years that has had a defect in the same spot. The first microwave caught fire at the top where the fan rotates. The GE Service Rep told us that the fan was not rotating, was beyond repair, and replaced the microwave with the same model. Today, August 14, 2014, the microwave caught on fire in the same place, but this time the flames were much bigger and engulfed the inside. We were able to extinguish the flames, and the top fan area is completely black and charred. The model number of these two microwaves is JVM1540DM5BB. The serial number of our current microwave is 200288. I will be notifying GE of this problem on August 15th. Thank you for your time.

We have a GE over the range microwave oven that has been turning on by itself. Model JVM1540SP1SS Serial #DT921213B Manufactured Feb.2010. It will turn on with 1 minute on the display and the keypad is unresponsive and I had to open the door to stop it. Close the door and it started up again with 1 minute on the display. Open the door and left it open then after a few minutes it started beeping and the display read “keypad shorted may need servicing”. I unplugged the microwave and waited an hour then plugged it back in. After being plugged in for 10 minutes it started up on its own again. Unplugged it and have not plugged it back in again. If this had happened while no one was home it might have caught fire and we would have lost everything.

The product, in the report: Product Type is a microwave oven. This is an under the cabinet model that is suspended over the stove. It uses a touch pad control. It appears that some form of continuity exists at the “1” pad that causes the oven to turn on by itself.
GE Microwave Oven Model JVM1540DP1WW, Mfg JAN 2010 was found in alarm mode by son who unplugged it. Later investigation revealed that the unit would turn on by itself starting a 1 minute Express Cook cycle which the CLEAR/OFF button could not stop. The magnetron was functioning and did heat the cup of water placed in the oven for safety reasons. My concern is that this could have happened with no one present (or sleeping) and could have started a fire.

The microwave fan and assorted debris (possibly insulation) was lying on the dish which rotates. The debris was on fire. The fire was extinguised sifely and the kitchen area aired out.
No injuriesor damages, but our question is, what would have happened if no one was at the house when the fire occurred?

The product, in the report: GE Profile Convection Over-the-Range Microwave Oven PVM1790SR1SS
After cooking some food this morning our microwave would keep running after closing the door. We couldn’t get it to stop unless we open the door or unplug it. Now, when we plug it in it starts on its own and keeps running. The turntable doesn’t turn but it keep cooking. The walls inside get hot. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it. We called GE service and they are coming out this week. It’s a good thing we noticed it running or it would have just kept cooking.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave Cooking Center microwave and thermal oven combination
GE Model JKP905P4SS, Serial FA607089Q installed on June 7, 2013, in our residence, as part of kitchen remodel. Unit was purchased on March 12, 2013 from local Home Depot Store. Unit tag indicates it was manufactured March 2013.
On April 3, 2013 at 7:45AM bacon was cooked in the unit. Bacon was taken out of unit and unit door was closed and fan stayed on. At approx 8AM, noticed the display was dark, the fan was off and left the kitchen. Returned to the kitchen at approx 9:30AM and the microwave’s display indicated the clock needed to be reset which was done. Opened the microwave door and the inside was very hot, closed the door and noticed the fan was running. Oven mittens were required to remove the glass turntable and left the door open thinking it would help the microwave cool down. At 11:45AM closed the microwave door and the fan started. Crackling and popping started and smoke started to come out of the top vents above the microwave. The door was opened and the crackling and popping stopped. The main electrical breaker for the microwave oven cooking center was turned off. The smoke stopped, but the possibility of a fire within the built-in cabinet existed and GE was called at approx 12 noon to determine the proper course of action. It was not possible to speak with a person so a message was left and the call was returned by [REDACTED] at approx 4:10PM but did not speak with her until Friday and gave her the details provided above.
GE sent a service technician on April 7, 2014, who removed the microwave’s control panel and energized the unit. After several minutes, the technician reported the noise heard was the magnetron energizing and not the fan running, as we thought, because a relay on the microwave’s control board was stuck in the on position. The technician disconnected wires from the microwave’s circuit board and said the breaker could be re-energized and the oven portion of the unit was safe to use until he returned to replace the microwave’s control board and the magnetron later in the week.
While the unit’s control panel was open we noticed both circuit control boards for the unit had dates of November 9, 2007 while the unit’s manufacture date was March 2013.
We are very concerned about the exposure to a fire risk, in an inaccessible cabinet, that the unit presented to our home and ourselves.

The product, in the report: GE Over the Range Microwave (1.7 cf), model LVM1750DPWW
My GE Model LVM1750DPWW Over-the-Range Microwave caught fire. The microwave was manufactured in September 2012, delivered in December 2012 and installed in June/July 2013. The fire occurred on the rear right upper rack hook. The hook began sparking and caught fire. GE sent a repairman who said it was a safety issue, that he “wished GE would tell people not to leave the racks in the ovens” and that GE would bring another microwave to the house and install it for me.
A couple days later, GE customer relations emailed me to say that the rack had not been installed properly on the hooks and that this was my fault and that they would give a small discount but would not replace the oven.
1. There is no way that the rack could be installed improperly. If it is on one or two hooks, it easily falls into the other hooks.
2. There was no way he could tell if we had, in fact, installed it improperly. The hook was burned and melted, so there was no way to put the rack on the hooks.

The product, in the report: GE Profile built in microwave with kit.
Our microwave caught on fire. I was cooking oatmeal in a bowl, it was only set for 2 1/2 minutes. I heard a crackling noise and looked and saw flames shooting down into the microwave. They kept getting larger and larger. I grabbed the fire extinguisher and evacuated my grandchildren, and turned off the power at the breaker box. I did not open the microwave, not wanting to add oxygen to the flames. The gire eventually went out. After an hour or so, I opened the door and saw that the top of the microwave had melted down toward the center. There was a chemical type smell. I emailed GE. I looked for recall information. Our exact GE Profile microwave was not in a recall, but one similar was. We had a fire with our GE dishwasher less than 3 months ago and did not realize it was in a recall. We have already replaced it.

The product, in the report: Black GE Spacemaker Oven JNM1541. DM 3 BB. -- 1 1/2 years
I was not using the over-the-stove microwave but was making soup on the stove below. All of a sudden, the microwave went on. We tried to stop it by pressing it off; we then opened the door but it kept running,; we tried to reprogram it, but it kept running. Finally, we located the circuit breaker and shut it off.
GE tech came out on 01/24/2014 and tested the microwave and concluded that the fan self-started because the thermostat on the bottom registered a hot temp from pot of boiling soup on cooktop. The fan will not shut off until the temp falls to a lower range and could not be controlled by us. This is a safety feature and not a problem!”

First incident melted the connection wires and burnt out the heat sensor. GE repaired and 2 months later same incident. Microwave ceased to work and upon inspection the same wires connecting to the thermo cut off were melted. This time the sensor did not burn out but heated up so much that it made on one of the terminals on the sensor break off. This is a fire hazard.

Our GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 is 6 years old. Twice now the ‘over the stove” light, contained in bottom of the microwave, has exploded, as soon as we turned on the light in the morning. Luckily the plastic cover beneath the 2 (very expensive to replace)bulbs has stayed intact or there would definitely have been injuries from flying glass particles. It happened again today, nearly scaring me to death, and waking my husband in another room. White smoke comes from the light socket after the bulb explodes. why would this happen to a cool light that has been off for over 10 hrs, in an Air conditioned kitchen? As with every single GE appliance that our builder insisted we buy when purchasing our new house, this has been nothing but trouble. continuous burned out bulbs, fan vent that wont close, on and on. they are all terrible appliances and ii will boycott them and their products for ever.

On August 27, 2013 I woke up at 2:00am. To the sound of the microwave running. I got up and saw it was on. Everyone in the house was asleep. I turned it off and removed a pan that was inside. I had forgotten that I left the pan in the microwave from dinner, 7 hours before. When I opened the door i noticed that there was a spot on the door where it almost burned through. I pushed the clear button numerous times and went back to bed, only to be woken up twice more by the microwave turning itself on again. Each time the microwave read, sensor error. At that point I was so frightened that it would burn the house down that I unplugged the unit and have not used it since. I am afraid that if I plug it in it will start up again. It is a GE model JVM1750SM1SS, serial number RR902672B, manufactured August 2008. I contacted the manufacturer and am waiting to hear back from them but in the mean time I am concerned for anyone else that owns this model. It may end up killing a family while they are sleeping.

Combo microwave and Oven GE Mod J-TP90D P4WW Ser.# GA619775Q The unit is three months old and functioned fine until August 9, 2013. We cooked a meal in the Microwave and shut it off upon completion. About an hour later I noticed a buzzing but could not identify the source. If I opened the door it would stop and restart when the door was closed. After a few minutes of this I noticed an odd odor and opened the door. The rotating plate at the bottom was very very hot which indicated that the microwave gun was activated and was the source of the buzzing. The smell got a lot worse and good deal of heat was coming out of the upper vents. It was obvious that wiring was burning! About then the unit shut off I presume via thermal switch. I immediately went to my panel box and switched the breaker off. Slowly the heat and odor dissipated. As this is in a wood cabinet the concern immediately became that this could be a source of a fire. The breaker remains off. I called the dealer and service after sale is not in their vocabulary .. Given that this was a new unit with a serious problem one would think that their reputation demands immediate or at least next day service. Instead I was given two time blocks on Tuesday .. three & one-half days later. Have you had reports of this nature for this product???

My GE Microwave starts by itself. It has done this 4 times in the last three days (at least that I am aware of) and it always goes to defrost frozen vegetables, which would require the same button to be hit twice before starting. Just called GE and they said to unplug it and wait one minute and plug it back in. If it continues I would need to have service come out at a rate of $79.95 plus parts. This is to fix a faulty microwave which was manufactured in October of 2010. I might as well buy a new microwave, which would not be GE.

The product, in the report: GE over range microwave, model JVM1540DN1WW, serial number TS904234B, manufacture date 10/09
On July 22, 2013 at 6:30 a.m. I noticed my microwave beeping and “READY” displayed on the screen. There was nothing in the microwave and my family was still asleep. I opened and closed the door to clear the ready. My teen son called me later in the day and said the microwave had turned on by itself during the day. I did not think to warn my husband who that night put a metal pan of brownies in the microwave to keep them fresh overnight (kind of as a bread box). In the morning I noticed the microwave beeping again with “ready” displayed. I opened the microwave and the brownies were warm and there was a scorch mark at the contact point of the pan at the back of the microwave. This is extremely dangerous and my house could have caught fire overnight. I called GE today and there is no recall on this product. I filed an incident report with them today and they are sending a technician out tomorrow to inspect it. I think a recall needs to be explored for this product as a similar incident was reported on this site last month.

The product, in the report: Over the range built in GE microwave over
We purchased an over the counter built in GE Microwave oven and had trouble several times with the touch key pad located on the right side of the installed unit. The touch key pad was replaced last year shortly after we purchased the unit and today the Key pad was no longer properly functioning as it read “Keypad error, service may be needed.” I was looking at the warranty book when to my amazement, the microwave went on all by itself! I quickly opened the door and it shut off and when i closed it there was a 1:00 on the display so i cleared it on the touch pad and left it alone and 2 minutes later it went on again all by itself. I realize that if there is nothing in the microwave that a fire can easily start and after this happened a 3rd time, again with nothing touched on the keypad AFTER it was cleared. I called GE and they were not willing to replace the unit free of charge even though this module was replaced just last year for a similar problem. They said i would have to pay for the service and the part which is totally unacceptable to me. The Model # is JVM1540DPWW and the Serial No: GV304588 Please let me know what can be done here as GE’s response was not acceptable in light of the danger this type of problem poses.

The product, in the report: Countertop Microwave oven
Used the microwave for 2 minutes followed by a wait of about 5 minutes then another 2 minutes use. About an hour later the microwave started beeping occasionally. A message about overheating and maintenance required was being displayed. Unit was hot to the touch and the door window is distorted. The door would not open. Unplugged unit and allowed it to cool. Was able to pry the door open as it was fuzed to the bottom of the interior wall which melted. Both inside and outside window parts are distorted.

The product, in the report: GE spacemaker microwave oven, model number JVM1540, black
My microwave turned on by itself. It would not turn off when I hit off on the keypad nor when I opened the door. It had to be unplugged to turn it off. If I had gone to bed or was not home I am afraid that there could have been a fire. After plugging the unit in again the next day, the same thing occurred later that day. Then my keypad became entirely unresponsive. I have a GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven model number JVM1540 which I purchased from Sears barely two years ago.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave oven
I was at home, heard a noise, looked around to see what it was, found that my GE microwave had turned on by itself it had an orange glow on the inside. I hit the clear button and it did not go off. I opened the door and it stayed on. I had to unplug it to turn it off. The keypad display was all light up and flashing off and on. The inside of the oven had an orange glow instead of the usual light that goes on when in use. It was making an arcing sound. If I was not home at the time, it would have caused a fire.

0n 6/10/2013 I came home to find my GE microwave model JVM1540DN1WW had started by itself and was running. I turned it off by opening the door and when I shut the door it started up again. After opening and closing the door several times over it continued to turn itself on, then it would stop for a minute and start up again. I then unplugged it. Very Scary and super dangerous. I feel that had I not come home when I did it could have started a fire. I think they should recall these appliances, they are not safe.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Microwave/Convection oven
The consumer says that her microwave oven turned on by itself. She is now afraid to turn it on. She says she has seen numerous online reports of the same thing happening to others. She said had she not been home or have been sleeping, her house could have burned down.
The consumer says that she was sitting in the living room when she heard something loud go off in the kitchen. She noticed her microwave spontaneously turned on. She was not able to turn it off by hitting the button or opening the door. She was only able to shut it off by hitting the circuit breaker.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer who offered her 50% off on parts. She was told by the company that they have never heard of this before.

The product, in the report: GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven Model JVM1540
GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven Model JVM1540 We discovered this microwave oven was turning itself on by itself. After unplugging and plugging back in, after a minute or two it would turn itself on by itself again. There is no way to stop it from turning itself on by itself.
It was lucky someone was there when it started happening as we fear it is a fire hazard to run a microwave for an extended period with nothing in it.
