The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Maytag built-in, under-counter dishwasher.

Maytag built-in dishwasher began to smolder while in drying mode. According to the fire department, an electrical short ignited some insulating material. When the firefighters arrived, they removed a burning piece of insulation from lower front area. It was still glowing when they extinguished it. The firefighters stated that it could have burned our house down had we not been home, not noticed the burning smell or seen the smoke. We’re very fortunate.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher Stainless steel interior and exterior. Model # MDBH975AWS Serial # 10500941JA

We own a Maytag dishwasher Model # MDBH975AWS Serial # 10500941JA. We noticed a lot of water coming out from underneath our dishwasher. Upon further investigation, we found that the water was coming out from the connection port area for the heating element. When we removed the heating element we found that the element itself had exploded.

Having noticed for the past few days that the indicator lights for the sanitary option was no longer lighting up upon completion of a cycle we can only assume that the heating element explosion tripped a circuit but not one that would make the dishwasher inoperable.

We are surprised that the dishwasher would keep on running after such an incident and highly believe that we could have had a fire.

Upon going to the Maytag site and checking for recalls we found a recall on Maytag dishwashers, plus others, for a faulty heating element that caused fires and damage. However, our model was not included in that recall.

The product, in the report: Under counter Maytag dishwasher: Serial # 27239658AC Model # MDB5130AWW

    Our Maytag dishwasher caught fire.

We bought the unit new a number of years ago (we do not remember how many years ago that was). We had a load of wash running. The load was the usual si8ze (i.e., not overloaded). We heard a crackling and popping. We saw flames shooting from the lower right of the unit and smelled smoke. By the time we got out our fire extinguisher the fire had stopped, the smoke had mostly subsided, and we found later that the circuit breaker had tripped.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher

I participated in the recall of Maytag dishwashers in July 2010 and the heating coil at the bottom of the dishwasher was replaced. Recently (in the last 3-6 months) I began using the Sanitizing and Heat Dry functions of the dishwasher. Two weeks ago I noticed that two spots on the dish rack directly above the heating coil were melted/burned through. In one of the spots, the tine that holds the dish in place had melted and fallen off the rack. In the other spot, the rack has melted through so that only the shell of coating remains at that spot on the dish rack.

I contacted Maytag via their hotline and was told that the recall replacement had a 90-day warranty which is now expired so that any repairs going forward will be my responsibility. In calling the CPSC hotline, I was told I could submit this report. The Release Number for this case is [REDACTED].

Maytag dishwasher MDB4651aWW3 has control panel that burns out. Other models in this line have been recalled due to fire hazard, but this one (yet). The product, in the report: Maytag Stainless Steel Dishwasher Model number MDBH750AWS, Serial Number 28381644GN

On August 2, 2011 we put our dishwasher on to wash the dishes before bed which is not unusual for us. Upon waking up the next morning we noticed our kitchen was very hot. When we went to unload the dishwasher we noticed it was still on, not running however still heating up. We could not get it off. My husband had to turn off the circuit breaker to stop the dishwasher from heating up anymore. When we were finally able to unload the dishwasher most of our dishes were ruined or melted, the rotater on the bottom of the dishwasher was ruined, and the plastic basket that holds the silverware was melted. I did keep one glass that was in the dishwasher in order to show people, Maytag included, what the dishwasher did to my dishes. I did research on the Maytag website to check to see if there were any recalls on this particular model, MDBH750AWS. There were no recalls on this particular model however there were recalls on other models that showed the same basic problems. I called Maytag and explained the problem that occurred. I was told that it seemed “our water was too hot”. I decided to have a service call done on the dishwasher through Maytag. They set up the service call for Monday, August 8, 2011. When the service person, from Solar Refrigeration and Appliance Service, Inc, came in he stated that our dishwasher was reaching 300 degrees in 3 minutes and “we were lucky our house didn’t catch on fire while we were sleeping”. He also stated that he has had to repair another dishwater with the same model number for having the same problem. He stated that our heating element in the dishwasher was bad. Today, August 10, 2011, I put in another call to Maytag to tell them what the service call diagnosis turned out to be and asked them to check if our model could be included in the recall. I was told “our model is too old”. However the models that are currently listed on Maytags website included in the recall were manufactured starting in February 2006. Our model, MDBH750AWS, was installed in our residence on May 3, 2006. I am hoping that this does not happen to someone else. The next person this happens to may not as lucky as my family and I. We were lucky in the fact that it did not cause a fire while we were sleeping. I would hate for that to happen to someone else because Maytag does not want to include this model in the recall already taking place for other models with the same problems. Our model number is MDBH750AWS and serial number is 28381644GN.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher--lower bin is being disintegrated by the heating element below it

I own a Maytag dishwasher that has burned through several of the metal rods on the lower bin just above the heating element. The problem started approximately 2 yrs ago, I believe I bought the dishwasher around 2006 or 2007. It is registered with Maytag so they would have this information. I was informed of the massive dishwasher recall in 2010 involving the excessive heat of the heating element and my dishwasher met some of the criteria to be considered (serial number ending in JP). At the time, the maytag.com website did not work for determining if it were included or not so I had to call the 800# several times trying to reach someone. I finally made contact and was quickly told it was not affected. However based on the damage at the time and the extent of the damage to the lower bin that has become even worse, I am not sure that it was not included. If it wasn’t, an investigation should be done to see if additional models are effected. I have pictures of the damage which I could email if needed. I am unable to get through on the maytag.com website and intend to call them again to deal with their lackluster customer service department tomorrow.

The product, in the report: Maytag Quiet Series 300 Dishwasher

Dishwasher was designed and manufactured with a water inlet on the left side of the unit that is open at the top allowing water to splash out of the unit when it runs. The slow and steady flow of moisture soaks the sound insulating cloth on the outside of the unit which in turn transfers the moisture to nearby cabinets, flooring, drywall, etc. The result over time is water damage to surrounding furnishing and development of hazardous mold. The problem goes undetectable until the cabinets, flooring, and drywall become saturated with water at which time small pools of water begin to appear.

Product started by itself (no one was near it or touched it). We opened it and hit the CANCEL button and it stopped and drained. After that, it would not work (ie: the START/RESUME button would not start the dishwasher - no light!)

Contacted a Maytag repair person by internet and problem was diagnosed as a bad touch panel (about $90) and control panel (about $160) to replace plus labor! We bought the machine in 2009 (March) and paid $449 + installation + installation kit and 110v power cord - so the whole thing was about $600.

Since the defective items were circuit boards (which should be very low failure rate items - like in a home computer or calculator or phone), I though the cost of repair was too high ($350+ for a $449 Machine) so I contacted MAYTAG on their web site and found that this item is subject to a 2010 recall which we didn’t know about nor were contacted about. Seems there is a “Fire problem” which Maytag will repair for free or give a rebate $150 or $250 on a NEW machine on CERTAIN MODELS.

So, if I have the Fire problem fixed, I still have a $350 + labor costs problem OR I can buy a NEW machine at $649 and have to buy a new installation kit + power cord + install fee + delivery fee + disposal fee in order to get $250 back for A DESIGN/and OR QUALITY PROBLEM at Maytag.

To verify everything, I went on-line to check archives of problems with MAYTAG dishwashers and was shocked to find that in 4 pages (that’s all I went thru) of 10 -12 problems per page, ove 10 of them had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM - which indicated to me that MAYTAG should have suspected there was a circuit board problem and corrected it at no charge to the consumer.

Therefore, I am asking the CPSC to investigate further. I can see that if a defective board could start the machine and if no one were nearby, it conceivably could flood the kitchen and/or start the heating coil (fire hazard) or maybe produce an electrical shock hazard. In any case, this is NOT a problem caused by consumer abuse or negligence yet can cause a very painful financial cost to the consumer to fix. This is a MAYTAG design or manufacturing problem and they should be forced to provide correction to the consumer at no cost.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher Model: MDB9150AWW

Maytag Dishwasher Model MDB9150AWW Ser# 27614890AL While using this dishwasher, smoke, burning smell, and sound of electrical sparks came out from bottom of front door panel. I removed the inside cover and discovered the main wiring harness that goes between the control board to various electrical components (motor, relays, sensors) have shorted out with burnt marks and with couple of wires severed. There are exposed copper wires where the wire insulation is showing signs of cracks and openings. I believe the wiring harness is faulty due to the flexibility of the insulation to handle the opening and closing motion of the door. This fault can potentially cause house fire and/or cause electrical shocks to the consumers. Others have also reported having the same issue. Maytag was contacted but wasn’t interested in looking further into this incident. I have pictures showing the problem wiring harness.

The product, in the report: 24” Built-in Dishwasher

Maytag Built-In Dishwasher Model: DWU9200BAB Serial Number: 26379054MM

While the dishwasher was in use, a large flash appeared beside the base and the circuit breaker tripped. Fortunately, no one was injured and damage was confined to the dishwasher unit.

When the unit was inspected by a BGE Home repair tech, damaged wiring was discovered. An electrical wiring bundle located in the base of the unit shorted, causing the wiring insulation to blacken and melt. The dishwasher has been disconnected and is awaiting removal.

I checked both CPSC.GOV and the MAYTAG website; I could not find where this model dishwasher had been recalled. I called the MAYTAG Recall Hotline, was told that this dishwasher had not been recalled, and was invited to call Customer Service. I attempted to call MAYTAG Customer Service, but the wait was excessive.

Bottom Line: As the dishwasher was functioning as advertised until it failed due to an electical short, I suspect there are still units of this model in use and users may well be unaware of the danger associated with this model.

On July 2 2011 my Maytag diswasher ,Model # MDB765AWQ AND SER # 23564894EG, heat element exploded. The dishwasher was in the heated dry cycle with 27 minutes left in cleaning cycle when there was a loud pop followed by steam and smoke exiting from the dishwasher. The event triggered the breaker immediately disrupting the power to the unit. Upon opening the unit, there was black and brown metalic particles over all of the dishes. When I removed the bottom rack the heat element was lying on the bottom of the washer tub in pieces with the coiled heat element exposed. Maytag has reccommended discontinued use of the product until a service person can look at the damage. The unit is inoperable.

The product, in the report: Maytag under the counter dishwasher Model #MDB7100AWB Serial # 15552865YK

I was eating dinner with my family when I heard an odd noise in the kitchen. I went in and saw black oily looking smoke in very large quantities poring out of the top of my Maytag dishwasher. I rushed over to try and turn it off while the foul smelling smoke burned in my lungs causing my to cough uncontrollably. As I reached out and grabbed the handle, fire leaped out and burned my hand. I looked and found a wet dishrag, wrapped it around my hand, and managed to open the unit and smother the fire with the wet rag.

I got my wife and two young kids out of the house and soaked my had with water from the hose. Now I can see that the fire came from the control panel in the door. It seems like it shorted out and caused the fire. The fire left scorch marks on my counter and the house has an unbearably strong smell of toxic chemicals in my house even a full day later.

If this had happened at night we could have all been killed.

The product, in the report: Maytag under the counter dishwasher in Black

Consumer stated that a dishwasher she owned prior had caught fire in her home. She stated that at the time of the incident her husband and her son were in the home. They initially smelled a strong odor in the air of smoke and plastic which they ignored. When the smell persisted they discovered that their dishwasher had caught fire. The product was on for about 30 minutes on medium before the incident occurred. The consumer was not able to contact the manufacturer or the retailer at the time due to other proceedings at the time but did mention that this issue is eerily similar to the incidents occurring with dishwashers included in release 10-255. The consumer said the product was burned and badly melted. The consumer also mentioned that the damage did not spread to the structure of her home. The consumer’s husband put out the fire using water. The consumer opted not to call the fire department and luckily was not harmed.
