Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Product: Maytag dishwasher Model: MDB5100AWB Serial number: 25520180ZK Color: Black Incident type: Electrical fire / open flame / smoke CPSC Recall 07-094: Model is from the MDB5 family, but serial suffix ZK does not appear on the published affected-serial list.
Product: Maytag dishwasher Model: MDB5100AWB Serial number: 25520180ZK Incident type: Electrical fire / open flame / smoke CPSC Recall 07-094: Model is from the MDB5 family, but serial suffix ZK does not appear on the published affected-serial list.
While our Maytag MDB5100AWB dishwasher was in the normal cycle, we noticed smoke coming from the dishwasher. We then observed fire/open flame coming through a small burned opening that developed in the front control-panel fascia near the electronic controls.
We opened the dishwasher door, and the active smoking/fire stopped immediately. We then shut off electrical power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and did not operate the dishwasher again.
After confirming that power was disconnected, I removed the control panel to inspect the damage. There was extensive fire and heat damage inside the control area. The plastic control-board enclosure/barrier was heavily charred and partially burned away. There was extensive damage around electrical wiring and an electrical connector near the right side of the control board. The control board itself was significantly heat- and fire-damaged, including damage visible on the underside of the printed circuit board.
The fire generated enough heat to burn completely through the internal plastic enclosure and create a hole through the exterior control-panel fascia, which is where the flames were visible.
The electrical connection at the lower dishwasher junction box, where the house wiring connects to the appliance, did not show similar visible fire damage during my inspection. The concentrated damage appears to be within the dishwasher door/control assembly.
I cannot determine the exact initiating component from visual inspection alone. Possible areas involved include the control board, relay area, electrical connector, or high-current wiring connection. I am reporting this because the appliance experienced an actual electrical fire rather than simply a failed electronic component.
I am aware of CPSC Recall 07-094 involving certain Maytag MDB-series dishwashers and fire hazards. This dishwasher is an MDB5100AWB, but its serial number is 25520180ZK, and the ZK suffix does not appear to be included in the serial numbers listed in that recall.
I have retained the dishwasher and the damaged control board, wiring, connectors, and other burned components and can make them available if CPSC would like additional photographs or to examine the appliance.
There were no injuries and no damage outside the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: I was washing a load of dishes and the cycle terminated on it’s own. The wiring completely shorted out and melted. The defective dishwasher was professionally installed on 8/13/2020. Previous repairs included one recall, and the second was a part that had failed, and was repaired by an appliance technician. The installer for the new dishwasher (not the same model or brand) noted the melted wiring. I have attached images.

The product, in the report: Maytag MDB7759AWW3 dishwasher
My dishwasher had been running fine with no sign of trouble when it started belching smoke from the door. After researching and finding that the common cause is a faulty control module I opened the door panel and found the damage too great to be able to be repaired with a new board. The control board is severely scorched, the wires got so hot they melted into the sound proofing layer, one [REDACTED] plug had fused itself to another component. Most disturbing is that despite all this damage, the thermal fuse still has continuity. It should have blown. Had it proceeded farther, I could have been killed from burning plastic vapors.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher Model MDB4949SKZ0 Serial FB3001232 Type 567-0
for the second time since my Maytag dishwasher was delivered on Wednesday, Jul 27, 2022, a part which counterbalances the door weight when opening to a nearly balanced equilibrium failed. The surprising result is that the immediately flops to a fully open position instead of lowering at a controlled, steady pace. The door, when closed in the operating position has no positive latching mechanism, it is just a friction fit detent to stay closed. The friction fit does not have to be fully closed for the door to remain basically closed. The door can be released from its basically closed position with little pull effort, which when the counterbalance device has failed is so sudden that it cannot be stopped. It occurred to me that the apparently closed door could be released by a toddler’s pull and the relatively heavy door could trap a toddler between the door and the floor, possibly crushing a small child’s head. No one in our home has been injured by this event in our home.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher
My dishwasher model MDB7749SBM3 (SN F35113994) was making a popping noise along with smoke bellowing and sparks jumping from the control buttons while it was under normal operation. The dishwasher was unplugged to prevent any further damage, toxic smoke, a fire, sparks igniting nearby objects, and a shock/electrocution hazard. This left an smoke and a acrid burning smell throughout the house. This is a second time the control buttons on this unit showed signs of of a burned control button panel on this same appliance.

Dishwasher was running, and began making a noise like electrical arcing. A few seconds later smoke and a foul smell poured out of the top of the unit. Breaker was turned off, and smoke subsided. All events were witnessed by two people. The control panel appeared to have caught fire where the power wires enter the control board. The circuit board was charred over 50%, and the plastic housing was partially melted.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher Model# MDB4949SDZ0, Serial# F73933599, Stainless color
Maytag Dishwasher Model# MDB4949SDZ0. The product is used for washing household dishes. Both my wife and I have used the appliance. No Injuries. The wheels from the bottom rack have been coming off. This has occurred on three separate occurrences. Only one wheel set is left that did not break. The most recent occurrence caused a wheel to come off and land onto the heating element in the bottom of the dishwasher stainless steel tub. Upon opening the appliance after the wash cycle ended, a strong burning foul odor was noticed. Upon checking it was determined that the wheel was smoldering at the bottom of the tub because it was laying against the heating element (it has a heated drying cycle). One wheel is broken in half and charred. Concern about this occurrence with the risk of fire and exposure to burning plastic. If we were not home to observe a problem and ventilate, risk to animals would also be a concern.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher with stainless steel front face.
Maytag dishwasher MDB8969SDM0. Heating element stuck on caused the dishwasher to get very hot and melt plastics. The heating element stayed on while the door was open after the cycle was completed and the dishes had washed. This essentially turned the dishwasher into an oven. I opened the front up and saw the connector on the control board was blackened. A relay or the temp sensor must have failed. The dishwasher is used 2-3 times a day. No one was injured. Major fire risk. The element was glowing red and somewhere around 680°C.

The consumer indicates that her dishwasher was on for approximately forty-five minutes and in the rinse cycle when she heard load pops and smelled smoke. The consumer hurried to her kitchen and noticed that the dishwasher was emitting black smoke from its top, right corner. The consumer immediately switched off the circuit breaker. Because the dishwasher was too hot to touch, the consumer had to wait to open it. Once opened, there was black soot at the top right and the plastic was melting on the outside. The consumer’s dishes were not damaged.
The consumer states that the unit was used once or twice weekly.
The consumer plans on keeping her dishwasher for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: stainless steel Maytag dishwasher model MDB8959SBS3
Our dishwasher began to spark and smoke Luckily we were awake and close by to cut the power to the washer as we usually let it run overnight. Heavy smoke and heat on the panel. After undoing the door the wiring to the control board was melted to the board. No water found inside the door panel or damage to the door to cause any short. Board and wiring were fused together and melted. This was purchased from Lowes several years back and the model number is MDB8959SBS3. Figured Maytag was a reputable brand and would work flawlessly, but this is a fire hazard and could have burned our house down and my kids bedrooms are over the kitchen! This was a close call and not acceptable to have something as simple as a wiring harness cause an electrical fire.

Dishwasher was cleaning and noone was in kitchen. Heard some noise from another rooom but didn’t think anything of it. Thought was one of the kids Then kept happening and getting louder and the dog was spooked. Went into kitchen and smoke was pouring out of the closed door of the dishwasher..not from inside the applaince but the door itslef was spewing smoke and extemely hot. We turned off the electricity to the washer but it continued to smoke and house reeks of burnt plastic type smell. It could have burned the house down so we are very lucky. It is now outside while we wait for a new dishwasher to be delivered and take that away. It literally is melted shut so can’t open to give you the serial number etc. It was a Maytag we purchased at Lowes...I think about 8 years ago.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher, Type No. 577-1, Stainless Steel Model MDB8959SBS0
On Thursday, March 12, 2020 around 10am, I started the “Normal” cycle wash with the “Heated Air Dry” cycle option on our Maytag dishwasher. After about 45-60 minutes, my children and I suddenly heard a loud “clicking” sound coming from the appliance. From our kitchen table, we turned to see a huge plume of white-ish smoke coming from our dishwasher, in the middle of the kitchen island. The clicking sound continued and I ran over to the dishwasher and opened the dishwasher door. A very large amount of smoke came billowing out from the vent on top of the dishwasher door and smoke from all around the sides of the dishwasher door. The clicking sound continued and so I immediately pushed “cancel” on the unit. The sound and smoke continued. I ran into our garage and flipped off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher and all island outlets. I ran back inside and our entire kitchen area was full of smoke that smelled like an electrical fire. The clicking sound continued for another minute or so and the smoke also continued to billow. After a minute or so, it stopped and the smoke continued for another few minutes. The entire unit smelled so strongly of electrical fire, we kept trying to fan the air and smoke outside.
At 11:30am or so, I contacted Maytag and opened a case number with their Safety Department. They took our information and requested that a company ([REDACTED]) come out on Tuesday, March 17th to complete a diagnostic of the dishwasher to determine what exactly took place.
On Tuesday, March 17th a technician from [REDACTED] came to our home and inspected the dishwasher. The technician immediately commented on the burnt electrical smell, despite the dishwasher being moved into our garage back on March 12th due to the smell. He opened the dishwasher door and discovered the entire circuit board was burnt and clearly had been on fire. He stated that he had no idea why the unit had started on fire and he took two photographs of the unit. He said that it would cost almost as much as a new dishwasher to make a repair and he did not see any point in attempting to do so, given the terrible smell and condition of the dishwasher.
On Friday, March 20th I called the Safety Department at Maytag, in order to follow up with the status of our dishwasher. I was informed that Maytag has no obligation to repair or replace the item and it is not currently involved in any recalls. Because our dishwasher is past the warranty date (one year), Maytag does not need to provide any replacement or compensation of any kind. I was told that Maytag would offer us a depreciated value of the item ($339) or 40% off the MSRP of a new Maytag brand dishwasher, out of their own “good will.”
This is extremely concerning as our Maytag dishwasher started on fire on it’s own, without any known cause. We traditionally start the dishwasher at night, before going off to bed, which would have resulted in most likely a catastrophic house fire. We sleep on the top floor of our home, with two adults and four children. I am terrified to think that this incident is not alarming for the Maytag Corporation and a similar incident may occur in another home at any time.
3/12/2010am - started dishwasher11am(ish) - dishwasher started clicking. Turned to see smoke pluming out of the dishwasher. Ran over and opened door, turned off. Clicking continued and smoke pouring out of vent and around dishwasher door. Ran and turned off circuit breaker. Came in and clicking continued for a bit, then stopped. TONS of smoke.11:30am - called Maytag and opened case number. Technician scheduled to come out on Tuesday, 3/17 between 8am-12pm.

The electronic panel on my Maytag MDB8949SBB3 dishwasher ignited yesterday. It started smoking and smelled strongly of an electric burn. Upon dismantling the panel, I found that the wires had burned. The unit is no more than 6 years old and the panel on it has already been replaced so the panel itself is even newer than the unit. The product, in the report: Black Maytag Dishwasher, model number Model: MDB8959SBB - purchased in August 2013
Dishwasher was running during the cleaning cycle and started smoking and producing an acrid smell. The smoke was coming from behind the control panel in the door. There was no sign of water penetration at that location in the unit. No visible flames were evident outside of the unit. The unit is no longer functional.
There was no specific harm in this instance, but the potential for harm was high. Please update with the following description for “Risk of Harm” - The circuit board overheated and started smoking. While no flames were evident outside the unit - the plastic melted and heat was sufficient to fuse the connection harness to the circuit board. The unit was installed in wooden cabinetry - which, with sufficient temperature and proximity, could have led to a whole house fire.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher model MDB7100AWB, black undercounter unit
My dishwasher, Maytag model MDB7100AWB was recalled and the door replaced in 2007 as part of Recall Release #07-094. When my dishwasher suddenly stopped working this year, my husband disassembled the door as the control panel was the first thing we suspected. Sure enough, it had burn marks on it. We bought the new control board, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought I should report it since there was a prior recall. I tried talking to Maytag but they insisted on sending someone out to look at it for $100 and we have already diagnosed and repaired the unit. They aren’t interested in pictures either so I thought the CPSC can decide if it’s an issue or not. I am attaching pictures for your review. I just don’t want something bad to happen to someone.

The dishwasher was loaded on 6/14 at night. Next morning when we went down, the kitchen was like 120 degrees. The dishwasher after finished did not turn off the heating element. All the plastic ware in the dishwasher was melted. Even opening the dishwasher did not turn off the heating element. I went to the garage and quickly turned off the circuit breaker which turned off the dishwasher.
On contacting Maytag about it they said they cannot repair it and its not under warranty. I inquired about a similiar recall for maytag diswashers in 2010 which matches the serial number on my dishwasher but they denied that this dishwasher is part of the recall.
They said its an old model and they dont have parts so the only option is to buy a new one.

The product, in the report: Maytag stainless steel under-counter dishwasher
We ran the dishwasher earlier in the day and noticed a burning plastic smell while the dishwasher was running but were not able to figure out where it was coming from. After dinner while cleaning up, we filled the dishwasher and started the dishwasher (Maytag Dishwasher model: MDB4949SDM2) running and were sitting around the kitchen table talking. After a while we started to smell the burning plastic smell preparing dinner and we were going to start looking for the smell when we noticed black smoke coming out from under the trim around the top of the door where the controls are located. We heard several pops and sizzles followed by the display flashing and then the circuit breaker tripped. we felt the door and the control area of the door was hot. The smoke reduced but continued for several more minutes. The circuit breaker was turned off and we ended up pulling the partially washed dishes out of the dishwasher.
On 13 May 2019, we called our insurance company and reported the incident. Our insurance company indicated that we should report the incident to Maytag customer service. Maytag Customer service transferred us to their Safety Department and they are sending out a factory service rep to look at the dishwasher to evaluate the dishwasher and repair it if possible.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, Maytag. Hidden control panel, stainless steel, 24 inch. Maytag.
Maytag dishwasher model #MDB6769PAS1 and Serial # F24103081
Bought back in 2012, started the dishwasher around 7:30pm, went upstairs to put my twins 5 yr olds to bed and then I started to smell burning.
We checked the walls and outlets upstairs, nothing. We went downstairs and the stench was STRONG and it was coming from the dishwasher.
My husband unplugged the dishwasher, inspected the control panel and wires (he’s a Master Licensed Electrician). He pulled out a BURNT part of the control panel and he saw the wires, burnt/melted, on the backside of the dishwasher.

First aid Made Apr 25, 2018, sent to the company May 3, 2018, published by CPSC May 17, 2018
The product, in the report: Built in Dishwasher
I ran the dishwasher as usual on the normal cycle at 11pm last night and went to bed as usual. First thing in the morning I empty the dishwasher. This morning the dishwasher was extremely hot . I burned my fingers on the drinking glass I was taking out of the upper rack. I could not touch the glassware with my bare hands. We always wash our [REDACTED] water bottles on the top rack. The [REDACTED] bottle was misshapen and shrunk.
I googled Maytag dishwasher overheating and found the CPSC document stating that the dishwasher was recalled because it is a fire hazard. My dishwashers serial number ends with JL. It is a Maytag model MDBH975AWB serial #33990225JL. I called 800 544-5513 to report this problem. I spoke to [REDACTED] and her supervisor [REDACTED] and was informed there is no recall for this dishwasher as a fire hazard. Since the dishwasher is no longer under warranty I could pay to have a service tech come out and look at it at my expense. I advised [REDACTED] that I felt that I felt this dishwasher is a fire hazard and a safety hazard as dishes should not be so hot as to burn my fingers, He said that they have had no issues with Maytag Legacy series dishwashers. It is not on their list. He Informed me that he has no knowledge of the Consumer product Safety Commission recalling Maytag dishwashers with serial numbers ending in JL or the recall dated 2010.

Maytag Dishwasher Model MDB8959SBS2 serial # F33309722. Purchased November 2013 Lowes Home Improvement.
Dishwasher used 3-4 times a week on average. The washer did 3/4 of a cycle and then tripped the breaker on October 23, 2017. A burning odor was coming from the machine.
We opened the front of the machine and discovered burned power wires (black and white), melted electrical connections and a burned spot on the control panel. This is not even fixable due to needing an entire wiring harness.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
The submitter set the dishwasher to a wash cycle. She later heard a loud popping noise and noticed that there was smoke emitting from the top of the door. The submitter opened the door and shut off the dishwasher. The submitter said the house filled up with smoke and a strong plastic rubber burn odor. The submitter’s husband removed the door from the dishwasher because it continued to smoke and put it outside the home. The submitter indicated that the door has a black burn spot near the top and the wires in the control board are melted. The submitter is not sure how long the dishwasher was running prior to the incident but she noticed water at the bottom of the dishwasher when the incident occurred. She has not noticed any burn damages to her dishes and she indicated that she did not have plastic dishes inside.
The submitter contacted the retailer, Sears and informed them of the incident. The submitter was told that her dishwasher is not recalled and her extended warranty has expired. The submitter was told she could purchase another extended warranty and it would cover the cost of a technician going out to examine the dishwasher and repairs that would be needed. However, the submitter indicated that she does not feel safe repairing the dishwasher.
The submitter plans to contact the firm.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher model MDB4949SDZ
Purchased a new Maytag dishwasher on 8/1/2017. Installed on 8/15/2017 During the third or fourth use we noticed an electrical smell coming from the unit. Upon opening the door, there was a two to three inch section of the lower heating element that had burned and melted.
I contacted Maytag to report this and ask for a replacement as I deemed this one hazardous. They informed me that the warranty only allows for service and repair. i then asked for a refund as this machine is a fire hazard and i do not want it simply repaired. I received the same answer.
Upon further research, it appears that Maytag had this same issue around 2010. That resulted in 12 fires and the recall of 1.4 million dishwashers. It seems it may be happening again.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher
A Maytag dishwasher was purchased from Home Depot in April 2017 for our summer home. The lock/latch does not function properly. This allows water to escape during the regular operation of the dishwasher. Water hits the top of the door on the inside of the dishwasher and runs down both sides of the door on to the floor. This is a safety hazard as it creates a slip/fall hazard and has the potential to cause an unsafe electricity situation. 2 service calls have yielded no resolution to this matter. Awaiting the 3rd service call with little hope of resolution as the last technician stated that the lock/latch is not strong.
As this dishwasher is located in a summer home, we do not consistently reside at the home. This is our 3rd trip to this summer home this year, and we have called for service on each trip. The dishwasher has not functioned properly since it was purchased in April of this year.

We bought this Maytag dishwasher on 5-5-14, so its not even 3 years old, we did not buy the extended warranty-wish we had now, because yesterday morning i started the dishwasher like i do every day, and we heard 2 pops, and then the dishwasher started smoking. We turned the breaker off, and opened the door-smoke everywhere, it has started on fire. After it cooled down, we took the front panel off, and the plug where it attaches to the brain of the unit was burned, and the wires melted together. This thing could have burned our house down, if we would have went outside to do our farm chores 10 minutes earlier we may not have had a house to come back to-A newer machine should not do this-so now we have to replace it and it cost $772-and now we are out a machine. The Model number is MDB8959SBS3-very upsetting.

Maytag Dishwasher Model: KUDE 40CVBL2 S/N : F00601129 Purchased in 2010
WE HAVE NOTICED PIECES OF PLASTIC BREAKING OFF AND FALLING ON THE FLOOR UNDER THE FRONT DOOR OF THE UNIT. I looked under the front door and noticed that a long piece of plastic that runs under the door has become brittle and is twisting and breaking off in small pieces due to high heat. There is also wiring that runs along the bottom of the door that goes into a junction plastic box. The wiring is melting and there is black coloring on the junction box. This looks like a fire waiting to happen and I will no longer use the dishwasher in this condition. There are many other Maytag washers that have been recalled due to fire concerns. I called Maytag customer service and they said it was not on their recall list and could not offer any remedy for repair or replacement.

Maytag built in dishwasher model MBD8951BWB serial number 10610928LR Purchased in 2009 Heating element remain on even though wash function was completed. I found the dishes so hot the next morning you could not touch them. Based on the control panel the dishwasher was off but the heating element was still on. I had to pull the fuse on the house circuit to shut the heat element off. I tried restarting the dishwasher but heating element won’t shut off. Dishwasher got so hot the lower spray arm melted due to the excessive heat. This is a potent fire hazard the unit should not fail leaving the heating function stuck on.
Due to the age of the unit we will replace it but concern with other people who have this model.

On Sunday morning April 10, 2016, I noticed that the granite counter top above the dishwasher was quite warm. Upon opening the dishwasher I also noticed that the interior of the dishwasher and its contents was very hot. I was unable to hold a dish due to the heat. According to the indicator lights on the door, the dishwasher cycle had completed. I kept the door open to cool down the dishwasher. I checked the heating element located at the bottom of the pan and was still hot. I then went down to the basement and opened the circuit breaker. After the element was cooled down, I then closed the breaker with the result that the heating element started to get hot again, so I opened the breaker and kept it open. My Maytag dishwasher (purchased less than 2 years ago) caught fire. Once we cut the electricity to the appliance, the fire stopped. Maytag sent a technician out to investigate and he said he believes a wire harness to the main control board came loose and that caused it to overheat and eventually burn. The wire harness has a series of clips on it designed to hold it in place. After the fire, I was able to find the clips and confirmed they were still engaged. The wire harness was not loose at all. It does appear that that fire started at that connector, but I don’t believe it was due to a loose fitting.

Arrived home, smelled electrical burn smell. Looked around could not locate source. Brought out thermal camera noted dishwasher seemed ‘hot’ on control panel. Saw dishwasher was ‘paused’, pressed ‘start’. Immediate arcing sounds and black, sooty smoke poured out of the top of the control panel into room. Yanked door open and ran downstairs to hit breaker while yelling at momma to evac kids.
Used thermal camera to assess damage through material, saw was concentrated on control panel. Removed front cover, found relay to soap dispenser burned, found electrical wiring harness had overheated/melted insulation, found wiring connector to control panel charred.
Removed control panel cover- 1 relay fell out some 30% consumed and burned. Arc indications on inside. Thermal fuse intact (damnit) and possible varistor next to relays appeared cracked. Unit was pulled out from under sink and put in the back yard; control electronics were saved for later analysis.

Maytag Dishwasher Model# MDB7749SBQO; Serial # F31102087 Between the original installation date of 04/12/2013 and 07/13/2015, the touchpad control panel was replaced under warranty (4) times by different companies due to defective wiring. The ribbon cable’s conductors repeatedly failed due to corrosion within their plastic insulation. And on 12/15/2015, the dishwasher’s wiring and/or electronics controllers caught on fire. My home’s circuit breaker for the dishwasher circuit tripped and cut off power before the fire spread beyond the inside of the dishwasher door. My home’s electrical panels and branch circuits are protected by a whole-house surge protector that was installed by local power company on the meter. The dishwasher has been the only problem. I have concluded that Maytag / Whirlpool either did not effectively and or robustly spec the electrical components for manufacture, or that despite the specs, Maytag / Whirlpool was cheated by manufacturers of the electrical components. I bought an extended warranty through Consumer Priority Service. Late on the evening of 12/15/2015, I uninstalled the fire-damaged dishwasher and moved it to my covered porch after I filed my claim with CPS because the fumes from the burned plastic would not dissipate and the fumes were giving us scratchy throats and headaches. CPS sent a repair tech on 12/21/2015 to itemize parts that would need replacing. Those parts include wiring harness W10496098, electrical control panel W10595570, electrical control assembly W10811166. It is unknown at this time whether replacement of these parts will solve the noxious fumes that may have permeated the dishwasher insulation. PHOTOS OF DAMAGED COMPONENTS ARE AVAILABLE.

All of the plastic tabs broke off of the dishwasher’s top rack within a few months of using it (about once a week.) As the tabs broke off, we replaced it with screws to make it stronger. I’m sure a replacement rail with the same plastic tabs would only work for another few months. Any recall/redesign will require this part to be made of metal. Having tiny plastic tabs hold up the weight of all the dishes on the top rack is a design flaw.
Each time a tab broke off, the top rack came crashing down while full of glasses. This is a safety hazard for many reasons; in my case, my hand was jammed onto the silverware below. Maytag customer service claimed there are no issues with the top rack, despite all the product reviews from people who are having the same problem in the first few months as well. Maytag rep replied that reviews are hearsay and said the design isn’t defective because there’s no recall....

The dishwasher racks burned (melted, blackened & partially disintegrated) in the front and along the bottom of the tub. Because a nearly identical model number was recalled for starting fires, I am concerned that this particular number was simply missed by evaluators and should have been included in that recall. Mine is Maytag model MDB7600AWB, serial # 22414904EE. The recalled dishwasher was also MDB7; however, my serial number wasn’t listed and should have been (in my opinion). http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2007/Maytag-Recalls-Dishwashers-Due-to-Fire-Hazard/

The product, in the report: MDBH979SAM1 maytag dishwasher manufactured by Whirlpool and many like models with a common design.
The Maytag dishwasher (mine is MDBH979SAM1) manufactured by Whirlpool has a design flaw. The same design was used in multiple models from 2010 to 2015. Generally the only effect is that the dishwasher stops working but sometimes the flexible circuit which connects the external control panel (with the buttons) and the internal control panel (the brains) in the door corrodes in a way that it heats up and in some cases causes fires). This defect exists in 10’s of thousands if not 100’s of thousands of units. Whirlpool is aware (phone 1-866-931-7384) and has redesigned the part but will not acknowledge the flaw (due to the cost exposure). So many of these parts are defective that the part is on national backorder for many/most models. The important point is that this not only causes the dishwasher to malfunction but can cause a fire.

More information on this incident can be found at http://recall.maytag.com - From the website: “Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.” We called the phone # from the letter and scheduled a date/time for a technician to service our dishwasher for a complimentary repair.
They sent out a technician on 4/20/2010. From the technician receipt, it states “Replaced heating element.”
This past week, my wife and I noticed that the counter above our dishwasher was extremely hot. However, we had not run the dishwasher in over 24 hours. Reaching in the dishwasher to touch some of the dirty plates/glasses that remained in the washer, it was evident that they were scalding hot to the touch. We called our local Maytag dealer/servicer, Miles Maytag of York, PA.
Miles Maytag sent a technician over on 1/26/2015. The technician noted that our heating element was not turning off and was extremely hot. As noted on the “Service performed” receipt -- “120V to heater constantly. Shut off at breaker: safety issue”. The technician stated that the issue was an extreme safety hazard and we were “very lucky you didn’t have a fire.” He reported that the cost to fix the dishwasher (including parts/labor) would be over $300. Not to mention the fact that we were charged $78.97 for the technician to come out and look at the defective machine.
At this point, we have the circuit breaker turned off for the dedicated circuit that powers the dishwasher as it is an extreme fire/electrical hazard. I was urged by [REDACTED], the service manager at Miles Maytag to contact Whirpool corporate. I called Whirlpool corporate and explained my issue. I explained to a customer service representative that they had services my dishwasher in 2010 to repair a defective heating element. However, this clearly did not fix the problem and I am lucky that their defective part did not cause a fire in my home. The customer service representative stated that there was nothing they could do for me as they already issued a repair for the recall and they are only authorized to do that one time.
I asked to speak to a manager. A manager from Maytag/Whirlpool explained to me that they are authorized to perform one recall repair, after which time “any further problems are the consumer’s responsiblity.” In pleading my case, I asserted that it may be due to negligence/error on the part of the 2010 technician, or simply an issue with defective parts/machinery. However, their so-called recall “repair” did not truly repair the issue, and a major electrical/fire hazard remained. Regardless, the manager stated that there was simply nothing she could do, except to extend an offer to purchase a new Maytag dishwasher (an offer which I politely declined).
I feel that Whirlpool should be held responsible for providing a defective product that caused a clear safety hazard. They claim no liability in this matter. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Maytag Dishwasher Model MDB6650AWB Serial 10483443YH
My Maytag Dishwasher caught on fire inside the front panel 01/26/2015. Black smoke was coming into my Kitchen. My wife screamed and I rushed in and opened the door and ran to the basement to cut off the circuit breaker. I did take the panel apart because I wanted to make sure nothing was still burning. I then searched for Maytag and see that there is a recall on my model Model # MDB6650AWB Serial # 10483443YH This shows in recall release # 07-094 I told Maytag that there was a recall and no one notified me about this. The woman said there was not a recall on this Model. I think she is covering up. I should have been notified because this could have set fire to my house. They are sending a service guy to check the unit Friday 3 days from now. My house stinks with the black smoke. I don’t believe Maytag is responding as they should be in this case.

Maytag dishwasher element stayed on after cycle completed. Melted plastic dishes. Serial number matches a recall that vendor has for a problem that is almost exactly what happened to me but says its recall isn’t exactly the same so it’s not covered. Thought someone should know because this issue is going to cause a fire and kill somebody if it’s not corrected by the manufacturer. I’m fortunate I caught and can afford to replace it.

The product, in the report: Maytag dishwasher, Black, Model MDB5100AWB, Serial #24138019YZ
During its cleaning cycle, the electronic panel to our dishwasher (Maytag Model MDB5100AWB Serial #24138019YZ) began to pop and sizzle and acrid smoke poured from the front. Our circuit breaker immediately tripped, and no fire resulted, but the acrid smoke filled the house for hours. This dishwasher was on a recall list, and the electronic panel was replaced about 2 years ago, but obviously it did not fix the defect. This was a dangerous, frightening situation and I am especially angry with Maytag/Whirlpool for their failure to “fix” this issue during the recall/replacement process.
