The product, in the report: GE QuietPower 3 Mod: ghda485n10cs Ser: AR825204B
GE Dishwasher model ghda485n10cs, serial ar825204b, stopped running shortly after cycle started (had filled with water). The front panel showed no power lights or activity, but the heating element remained on to the point of boiling of all the water in the dishwasher. I had to turn the dishwasher’s breaker off to avoid continued heating. While the door was opened, the dishwasher heating element would stay off, but it turned back on whenever the door was latched.

No one hurt Made Nov 29, 2011, sent to the company Dec 7, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 21, 2011
The product, in the report: Ge Profile Dishwasher
My wife returned home yesterday afternoon and noticed a burning smell in our house. At first, she could not locate the origin of the smell, but after walking through the kitchen, she felt a lot of heat coming from the dishwasher. She opened it up to find it excessively hot, and many plastic (but dishwasher safe) items were melted. So many items were melted and dripping down into the bottom of the dishwasher that she was unable to pull out the bottom rack (it was fused to the bottom of the dishwasher with melted plastic). She made sure it was turned off (it was already) and left it open to cool.
When I returned home a few hours later, I inspected it but noticed that it was still hot inside and the heating element appeared to be the source of the heat. I turned off the circuit breaker and removed the dishes that I could.
I tried to contact GE but it was already after 10 PM ET (when their customer service line is closed). I purchased this dishwasher just over 3 years ago (July of 2008) and it is unfathomable that an applicance could go this bad this early. If my wife didn’t arrive home early that day to notice this, it could have caused a fire. I called GE this morning. The first time I was on hold for 15-20 minutes and abandoned the effort. The second time, I called while I was driving into work. After about 30 minutes, I was able to speak to a representative. He took down my information and then offered to send someone out to check it out. Having been through this exercise before with other GE appliances at the same time, I advised him that I expected that person to bring a check for the amount that I paid for the dishwasher or a new dishwasher that doesn’t act as an oven. I am still awaiting a call back from them.
From looking online, I have noticed many similar stories with GE dishwashers burning up like mine did. These do not appear to have been covered by this recall. I am very concerned that this is a problem that is not yet fixed. Please do something before someone gets hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The product, in the report: dishwasher
I ran my GE Dishwasher (Model = PDW7300N10WW Serial Number = MM723742B) during the afternoon. The dishwasher completed its cycle and turned off. The next morning (approximately 18 hours later), I awoke to find my kitchen countertop extremely hot. When I opened the dishwasher, it was continuing to produce heat. The dishes were too hot to touch and the heating coil at the bottom was turning white. We turned off the circuit breaker and contacted GE Service.
The GE repairman indicated that the module control (Part#WD21X10372) was defective. The part was ordered and replaced.

Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 12, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 21, 2011
The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher.
Home was built in 2007 and first occupied July 1, 2007. The builder-provided (upgraded) GE Profile Dishwasher (Model PDW9980N00SS) in our $44,000 “French Kitchen” overheated during dry cycle, causing all plastic contents including utensils, silverware racks and water-distribution spindle arms to melt. Several dishes were cracked with the heat, and the handles of several utensils melted to the point that they were unusable and had to be thrown away.
Heat was such that the 1” thick granite countertop above the dishwasher became too hot to touch, as did the solid cherry cabinetry surrounding the unit. My wife sustained minor burns to her fingertips as she leaned on the countertop to open the unit and turn it off manually. Unit would not turn off manually, and we had to rush and disconnect power at the breaker.
GE have told us that our unit is not covered under the 2 recalls, even though the recall dated October 26, 2010 (Release #11-022) shows an exact picture of our unit. The GE agent told me on the phone “Well, because of the recall we changed the model numbers, and yours is newer and isn’t covered.” I asked if the actual unit had been changed or modified to make it safer, and I was told “No, - it’s the same and just the model number was changed.” GE declined all responsibility and refused any repair or replacement assistance.
Several weeks subsequent to the incident, after working on the electrical supply to a newly added outlet elsewhere in the house, the electrician unknowingly turned all the breakers back on when he restored power. Unknown to anyone, the dishwasher unaccountably began to heat up again even though it was turned off, had not been touched, and the door was tied shut. Again the heat was so intense that it almost caught fire, and we were only alerted because of the smell of scorching cabinetry and burning plastic. Had nobody been home, the entire house could well have caught fire, incinerated our pets and belongings, and potentially burned to the ground.

The consumer says she was checking on dishwasher during cycle. She says that the timer was still going but the dishwasher was not doing anything. This happened for about 3 minutes. she smelled an electrical burning smell. She opened the unit and there was still water at the bottom of it. The product, in the report: GE STAINLESS STEEL MONOGRAM DISHWASHER, MODEL MM805238B
I HAVE A GE MONOGRAM MODEL ZBD0700N0II. RAN THE DISHWASHER AND WHEN IT FINISHED THE CYCLE IT BEEPED (SIGNALS IT IS OFF). I WENT TO BED AND THE NEXT MORNING I COULD SMELL HEAT IN THE KITCHEN. I OPENED THIS DISHWASHER AND IT SHOWED THE HEAT CYCLE STILL ON, THE PLASTIC COOKWARE IN SIDE HAD MELTED. THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET THE DISHWASHER TO SHUT OFF WAS TO SHUT OFF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER. THE DISHWASHER WAS PURCHASED AROUND JULY 2007. I CHECKED GE’S RECALL LIST AND SOME MONOGRAM MODELS WERE LISTED BUT NOT THIS ONE HOWEVER, THIS IS APPARENTLY SIMILAR TO THE INCIDENT THAT THE RECAL MODELS HAD. THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE GE WEBSITE ON RECALLED DISHWASHERS:
GE has determined that water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.
I WILL BE CALLING GE CONSUMER AFFAIRS TOMORROW AS SINCE TODAY IS JULY 4TH THERE IS NO ONE THERE TODAY

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher
GE Profile dishwasher had a recall to correct fires that started in units like mine. My unit was part of the recall and was fixed. My control circuit caught fire and melted the wireharness before the thermal detector turned the power off. The recall was only to install the thermal overload device, not to replace the underlying cause of the fires. The thermal protection device did its job but only after the fire started. The damage involves the control panel, wireharness, the thermal protection device, and the control board (not sure if the smoke caused any damage.)
