Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Oct 6, 2026, sent to the company Oct 9, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2026
The product, in the report: GE 18-inch portable dishwasher on wheels, black/stainless finish, with faucet-connect hose system
My GE portable dishwasher was operating overnight while my family was sleeping. I woke up in my bedroom because of a strong burning/melted-plastic odor and severe smoke. The kitchen was heavily filled with smoke, and the smoke entered the bedrooms through closed doors. I did not observe an open flame.
After the incident, the dishwasher was completely inoperative and standing water remained inside. A strong burned odor remained inside the dishwasher and in the apartment for several days. The dishwasher’s electrical plug and the wall outlet showed no visible melting, scorching, or other visible damage.
Both my minor daughter and I were exposed to the smoke and required medical care afterward. I was prescribed medication following my medical evaluation. The medical visits and treatment are documented.
GE later arranged a safety service visit. Electronic diagnostics identified a failed Main Control Board, but the dishwasher was not opened or disassembled and its internal wiring, electrical connections, connectors, control box, and control board were not physically inspected. The source and underlying cause of the severe smoke event therefore remain undetermined.

No one hurt Made Sep 27, 2026, sent to the company Oct 6, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 21, 2026
The product, in the report: GE Profile Countertop Dishwasher. Black, 17.3” high, 21.7” wide, 19.7” deep
Description of the Incident: While the GE Profile countertop dishwasher was running, it suddenly began to emit a very strong, bad burnt smell coming directly from the machine. I quickly unplugged the unit from the wall to prevent a fire.Shockingly, while the machine was completely unplugged, the bad burnt smell intensified, and it actively started smoking from both the back and the front. The fact that the machine itself continued to smoke and burn after losing all electrical power indicates a severe internal failure and a critical fire hazard. The manufacturer (GE Appliances) has completely failed to address this severe safety issue and has abandoned their warranty obligations. I contacted them immediately, and they scheduled a repair technician to inspect the unit. I waited two weeks for this first appointment, and the technician completely failed to show up.I contacted them again, and they rescheduled the appointment. I waited another full week for the second appointment, and the technician failed to show up a second time.It has now been a total of three weeks of waiting. The company has provided no phone calls, no texts, and no updates. They are completely failing to contact us or resolve this hazard. Furthermore, they are refusing to provide us with the Return Authorization number required by the retail store to process a return.Because GE has twice abandoned their service appointments on a smoking appliance, left a dangerous fire hazard in my home, and ceased all communication, I am reporting this hazardous product and corporate negligence to the CPSC.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe Dishwasher Model# CDT805P2NS1 SN# MS792671B
When running our Cafe Dishwasher Model (CDT805P2NS1) SN# MS792671B last Thursday September 10 2026 around 10 pm. We found our entire Kitchen to be filled with smoke and a heavy burning smell. We immediately stopped the dishwasher and unplugged the power cord. I then opened up all windows and put some fans to help remove the toxic fumes. I then told my wife to get her and my son out of the house and stay the night with a family member. I stayed at home until I got our animals secured in the garage away from all the toxic smoke. I then left as well and when I came back the next day our house still had a heavy burning plastic smell. I took our animals with me and stayed with our family until Saturday. I was lucky to be home and notice this so I could stop this before it caused a larger fire and more damage or even worse all those toxic fumes to be released while we slept. This is our second unit the 1st one was replaced due to issues before. There was 2 wheels that melted I found stuck on the heating element that fell off randomly? I threw away all the dishes that were in the unit because they were exposed to the toxic fumes from this incident. I feel this unit is not only dangerous but could potentially cause health issues due to toxic fumes. We contacted GE and they dont seem to be taking this seriously I really feel this unit needs to be recalled for this issue before someone else is not so lucky.

The product, in the report: GE Appliances Dishwasher GDF530PGM4BB
In the early morning hours of May 29, 2026, I was awoken by smoke alarms triggered by a fire originating from my GE dishwasher, where I discovered the kitchen filled with thick, acrid haze and water leaking from the unit. I immediately cut power via the main circuit breaker to extinguish the active electrical fire. The interior of the unit shows clear thermal damage, including soot accumulation and melting of plastic components, specifically around the heating element, lower spray arm, and diverter assembly, which has resulted in persistent, noxious chemical odors that created a hazardous living environment. I reported this to GE Appliances (Case #[REDACTED]), but after a field technician acknowledged the damage without providing safety guarantees, GE Consumer Relations informed me they do not consider this a safety issue, claiming internal temperatures remained below ignition thresholds, and offered only a “No Charge Service” or discounted replacement. I have rejected this offer because a simple parts replacement does not address the cause of this catastrophic failure, and the manufacturers refusal to conduct a forensic investigation is negligent. I am retaining the unit in its damaged state to ensure that an objective, third-party, or CPSC-led forensic analysis can be performed, as I firmly believe this unit represents a significant fire risk to other consumers and that GEs dismissal of this event warrants a formal safety investigation by the Commission.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jun 4, 2026, sent to the company Jun 9, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 24, 2026
The product, in the report: GE Dishwasher
A brand-new, factory-redesigned GE replacement lower spray arm (part #WD22X33499) suffered a catastrophic structural and thermal failure mid-cycle. The plastic component warped and detached from its mount, falling directly onto the exposed electrical heating element. It physically melted onto the high-heat element while the appliance was actively running, causing the unit to fail and creating a severe, uncontained water leak into the kitchen.

The product, in the report: GE Profile PDW9980N20SS Stainless Steel built in dishwasher. Approximately 2008 model year.
We have a GE Profile Model PDW9980N20SS Dishwasher (approximately 2008 vintage). During the last wash cycle, the internal heating element failed to turn off at the end of the cycle. We were home and noticed the smell of burning plastic. By the time we discovered the problem, the counter above the dishwasher was very hot and the internal plastic spinner inside the bottom of the dishwasher was partially melted. The only way to shut down the heating element was to turn off the breaker. To check, we turned on the breaker the next morning and the heating element immediately turned on even though there was no cycle running. Had we not been close to the dishwasher when this incident occurred, and shut off the breaker, the result would have been a serious house fire. These older GE dishwashers that are subject to this failure should be recalled and taken out of service.

The product, in the report: GE dishwasher
On a fairly new GE dishwasher that was purchased at Lowes the lower rack carrying assembly fell off and dropped onto the heating element causing it to melt down. Luckily the smell alerted us to a problem and we were able to shut the dishwasher down before it ignited. On inspecting the problem and ordering a new lower rack carrier from [REDACTED] I noticed several comments on others having the exact same problem on the same machine. Upon receiving the part I immediately noticed that the roller assembly was completely different than the one that came with the machine and caused the problem . In fact even though I only ordered what I assumed and looked like on the parts diagram I received a set of four with instructions telling you to replace all 4 lower rack roller assemblies. My problem with this is that GE obviously knew they had a dangerous problem with the older rack assembly hence the new design but the only way we ever found out was by having to buy a replacement after the problem happened. I feel like GE is trying to cover a very potential fire hazard on this product.

The product, in the report: GE DISHWASHER WITH THREE RACKS. THE HEATING ELEMENT IS UNDERNEATH THE BOTTOM DISHRACK.
My GE dishwasher caught fire burned one wheel and melted one wheel, smoke filled the kitchen and through the wall to my pantry. If I was not home to turn the breaker off the dishwasher my kitchen would have been a blaze. GE repaired the unit. The dishwasher started smoking again yesterday 04/14/2024 less than two months after first repair. The start button was flashing. Water was in the bottom of the dishwasher. My grandson who is three years old said fire, fire! I ran and turned the breaker off.

The product, in the report: GE 24” portable dishwasher. Black in color. S/N SCAT60S723K
Station 14 was dispatched for a report of a black smoke haze coming from behind a stove. Upon arrival had a single story single family dwelling with attached garage with nothing showing. Upon entering the house could smell a burning electrical smell. Home owner stated that a breaker tripped that runs half the kitchen. Upon further investigation with a thermal imaging camera it was determined that a portable dishwasher had over heated and shorted out. We have temperatures in the motor area of 100+ degrees and had a heavy smell of burning electrical coming from it. No fire was found in the dishwasher. We advised the home owner to leave the dishwasher unplugged and call the place they had purchases it from. Listed below is the make, model and S/N of the appliance.

The product, in the report: The dishwasher is a General Electric (GE) Monogram series ZBD6880K00SS, serial number RG70724B.
Per the homeowner.- she left the residence around 1300 hours, returned four hours later, and noticed that the dishwasher was still running. She stated that the dishwasher had never run for this long. She opened the dishwasher door around 1730-1745 hours, and smoke immediately came out. Initially, the smoke was grey and rapidly turned black. The homeowner called 911 and cut the power at the main electrical panel. The dishwasher is a General Electric (GE) Monogram series ZBD6880K00SS, serial number RG70724B. The homeowner stated that the house was built in 2014 and that all of the dishwashers in the housing tract had the same units. A recall search on the GE website has several dishwasher recalls, but none after 2006. The same search on the CPSC website returned no results. Origin and Cause Examination The fire was contained inside the dishwasher’s door. Soot deposits were inside the door frame (between the inner and outer skins) and on the door’s locking mechanism. The metal around the lock mechanism was discolored and may have a clean burn from soot deposits being burned off or heated to a point where they were consumed. The door was not disassembled, damaged, or altered by responding fire crews or the on-scene fire investigator. For NFIRS reporting, the fire is classified as accidental. Without disassembly and analysis by an electrical engineer, the specific ignition sequence or cause cannot be determined. The concern in this fire is that the initial failure sequence did not shut down the dishwasher. The homeowner said she tried to turn the unit off at the control panel, but the system was not working. The initial fault, or the subsequent fire, did not turn off the timer and heating element. Had the homeowner left for an extended period, a high probability exists that the fire in the dishwasher door would have spread to the counter above the dishwasher and subsequently involved the kitchen or the entire home.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
We have a GE dishwasher that’s 6 months old. The plastic wheels on the bottom rack became unattached and experienced significant burn damage after using the dishwasher. There’s a strong smell of burnt plastic coming from the dishwasher and toxins within the dishwasher itself. This happened because the product was designed poorly. GE said they will not test the dishwasher to ensure it’s safe to use and free of hazardous chemicals. They will only replace the wheels. This is a health risk and if the dishwasher is full of toxic and hazardous chemicals- we will ingest these chemicals via anything that goes into the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: GE® Top Control with Stainless Steel Interior Dishwasher with Sanitize Cycle & Dry Boost with Fan Assist Dimensions: 34 H x 23 3/4 W x 24 D Model number GDT665SGN3BB
I have a GE dishwasher that was purchased approximately 3 years ago. I was told by the product support specialist that this model was first manufactured in 2019.
This dishwasher had a wheel for the lower rack that kept popping off. We just popped it back on. We then realized it wasn’t rolling properly. I assumed maybe the fact that it was warped (and now I know, melted) is why the wheel kept popping off.
Then, the other night, I woke up a little after midnight to the smell of burning plastic. We immediately stopped the dishwasher, found that that same roller somehow ended up on the element and was melting. We pulled the melted plastic piece off of the element. We also had to open up windows to air out the house, closed the bedroom doors to stop more fumes from entering into our rooms, and the kids’ rooms. The fumes smelled very toxic!
I contacted the manufacturer as I didn’t see any recalls on this particular product, but I’ve seen them for dishwashers in general. I was told we should order a new roller piece and have a new element installed.

A service was scheduled to replace the heating element. The part was late and I had to reschedule with the service company. About a week after this service was complete, an electrical fire began inside the door of the dishwasher, filling the kitchen with nauseating fumes.
After reporting this to GE, another service was scheduled to repair the electrical components. The part was late again and I had to reschedule with the service company. The technician reported that the component was beyond repair.
Now, after all this, representatives from GE are now telling me that “This recall work, or the free repair you are referring to was completed earlier this year. With this said the recall portion has been completed and the free repair or rebate option that the recall offers is no longer available” and also “the additional issue you experienced with the smoke coming out of the control area was not directly related to the recall and is a separate issue”

General Electric Dishwasher Model PDWF200P00WW Stainless Steel Tub. Near fire. Product is a fire hazard. Dishwasher has completed its cycle. Clean light was on. Went to bed at 8pm. Awoken at 1:30am by burning smell. Entire kitchen countertop for 8 feet around dishwasher terribly hot. Opened dishwasher, terrible heat from heating element, terrible smoke. Shut off power to dishwasher. Took several hours for [REDACTED] countertop to cool, and now it is warped. After the smoke cleared, found melted plastic from entire bottom of silverware basket on the heating element and the bottom of the dishwasher and also coating much of the silverware. It is very clear to me and my husband (an engineer), that the heating element did not shut off when the dishwasher finished its cycle. This event could easily have caused a terrible house fire and multiple deaths. My husband and I were exposed to terrible fumes and smoke, presumably from burning/melting plastic.

The dishwasher circuit board started fire. I thankfully caught it in time. I noticed an electrical burning smell after the dishwasher started. I then removed the inside panel and noticed that the board and connector were melted together. There is a hole straight through the main control board of the dishwasher and the 8 pin plug melted to its connection point.

I have a GE Quite Power 3 Dishwasher - Model Number GLD6700N10WW. I have learned that this has a recall for the heating element but I have an additional concern. The Unit almost started a fire. This originated in the door of the unit and was coming from the control panel. It cause black soot filled smoke to fill the house. It appears I cut power just prior to full fledged house fire. It will likely take time and cost money to clean the whole house and replace the faulty dishwasher. Lucky to be alive as we were sleeping when this occurred.

The product, in the report: GE cafe diahwasher
I purchased a GE Cafe dishwasher 11/2008. On November 6, 2018 I ran a load of dish, just as I always every night before go to sleep. Around 4:30am I woke up with a burn smell all over the house. We checked everything and when we got closed to the dishwasher the lights were saying done as usual but my husband burned his hand in the granite it was very hot the bottom of the small appliances on top of the granite were also very hot. We immediately unplugged the dishwasher. When we open the door a lot of smoke came out and everything inside was melted beyond recognition and glued together. The burned smell stayed in my house I had to keep the house open with the cold outside to ventilate and get the smell out. I unsuccessfully tried to contact GE over the phone then I emailed GE on 11/13/18 and they replied on the next day and scheduled an technician to come to my house on 11/17/18 for assessment. The technician assessed as damages not reparable and I should contact GE for a solution. I called GE today and since there is no recall for this unit and is passed the warranty they only thing they could offer me was a rebate to buy a new equivalent model which I would need to spend almost 1000 in another GE product. Not happy with that, I insisted this is a Hazard issue and should be looked further. GE supervisor said they are aware of the issue on these units meaning there is an issue they say mechanical but honestly is a manufactured issue on these units but since it is not a hazard so there is no recall. Everyone that reported the same issue so far it happened in different time of use so that seems not to be the trigger. Also everyone got lucky they got to it before the problem escalated. Do we need to wait someone get really hurt or have their house burned before this gets seriously looked at and the units be recalled?
Damage assessment: - all dishwasher safe plastics were melted beyond recognition including my blender cup - most plastic dishwasher parts were melted beyond recognition - e.g. silverware basket totally gone lost all my silverware glued to it. - could not move lower tray - wheel damage and plastic stalactites fusing everything together - GE technician reported damages not reparable offered a rebate and we would have to do an out of pocket of almost $1000.00, not counting on the items lost in the dishwasher. Silverware aprox $300.00, blender cup $50.00, other dishwasher safe items $40.00. The dishwasher is a GE Cafe model # CDW 9380N20SS serial # RR785976B

Our dishwasher starts smelling like a bad electrical fire. I smelled it from the next room. I went in and smoke was pouring out of the front ride side of the panel. The lights were no longer working on the panel but the dishwasher was running. The front cover was slightly warped near the top right section. I opened the door to stop the dishwasher. We turned off the power at the breaker. Upon opening the door, there was evidence of smoke having escaped from the top vent area of the door. Even after opening windows and turning on fans, there is still a bad odor in the house.

The product, in the report: Ge profile dishwasher. The label inside the tub door has come off. I do not know the model or serial number.
We ran the dishwasher after cleaning up the kitchen at approximately 10:00pm Saturday January 20, 2018. Around 10:15, we noticed an odor of electrical fire smoke while watching tv 2 rooms away. In the kitchen we found smoke coming from the top of the dishwasher. We disconnected the power and removed the unit. Upon disassembling the door to assess the damage we found the board had suffered too severe damage to repair. The counter top also suffered minor damage and our entire house had to be ventilated. The smoke was very irritating to myself and one of my children, enough to wake him from sleep in a panic. After purchasing a new dishwasher on January 21,2018, I decided to see if anyone else had this issue, so I googled ‘Ge profile dishwasher fire’ and found this recall site.

GE Dishwasher Profile Series. Model # PDW9700N2011, Serial # VR763228B. Dishwasher heating element came on without user interaction while off, heating to the point fire alarm sounded, and melted internal components and objects placed inside, and would have caused fire if not discovered by consumer. AC had to be turned off at breaker. If consumer had not been home or been sleeping, the dishwasher would have caught fire and likely caused a fire in the home. Consumer nearly burned in face when unit was opened by hot gas and smoke. After ten minutes with door open, objects inside unit were over 285F according to IR temperature meter.

The product, in the report: GE dishwasher
The dishwasher had completed the wash cycle and was drying the dishes. I was working in the yard and came in for a drink of water. I noticed all the lights on the dishwasher were off except the “clean” light. I leaned against the counter above the dishwasher and noticed that it was extremely hot.
I opened the dishwasher and was hit by a blast of heat. I could not touch the racks or dishes with my bare hands. I used a pot holder to try and slide out the bottom rack but it was stuck. I then noticed a knife on the bottom of the tub. I then realized that the utensil basket had melted and more utensils were protruding through the bottom of the basket. This was what caused the rack to be stuck in the closed position. I raised the rack and picked it up and out of the dishwasher. I then observed that the rubber had melted off the bottom rack.
I emptied the dishwasher and closed it. A short time later I observed the heat was back on again but none of the lights on were lit and would not turn off unless the door was open. If I had not been attentive this defect could have possibly caused a fire in my residence.

Our dishwasher’s heating element never turned off after the cycle finished running. We came down to the smell of burning plastic. The silverware was beginning to melt the silverware container, a tupperware lid had completely melted and was in the drum of the dishwasher, across the heating element, plastic kids silverware was melted to the silverware container, other plastic dishes and cups were misshapen.
After we opened the door and ensured the cycle was done running, the heating element cooled down (after a long time). when we re-closed the door, without running the cycle, the heating element turned on again. I had to turn off the circuit breaker.
We were leaving on vacation the next day, and we were lucky we ran the dishwasher that night as we typically start the dishwasher as we leave the house. I am confident that had we run the dishwasher the next morning, our home would have suffered a major house fire.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
On Saturday, June 10th 2017 around 7 PM my wife and I had gone onto the front porch of our house. [REDACTED] ( wife ) was planting a few flowers while I was resting in one of the chairs. After about a half hour [REDACTED] went into the house. She ran out saying there was smoke in the house. I got up and ran into the house to where I saw the smoke. The smoke was coming from the dishwasher in the kitchen which had been on for about a half hour ( turned on before we went on to the front porch ). I opened the dishwasher to shut it off. The plastic had melted on the front panel and there was the smell of burnt plastic. The circuit breaker did not trip or the smoke detectors alarm. We must have gone in just as the fire started. The plastic inside door cover had a crack in it. It appears that the plastic had cracked allowing water into the control board mounted in the door. I realize ( looking at your website that there is a recall warning on this model GE dishwasher due to a failure of the drying coil. We never use the drying option on this dishwasher. I realize that the dishwasher is several years old but I feel a warning should be posted on the cracking of the inside “plastic” of the door causing the control board to overheat and cause a dangerous situation. If we had run the dishwasher at night I may not be writing you as the smoke inhalation would, most likely, would have killed us. The GE dishwasher is GLD6800N00BB SN = FM907167B I have pictures of the damage to the dishwasher if you need them.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher MN: PDW7700G00WW and SN: VA774228B.
This following incident occurred with a GE Profile dishwasher MN: PDW7700G00WW and SN: VA774228B.
The incident below is particularly concerning because it appears to be an identical fault described in a GE recall number 12-244 issued August 9, 2012 but my unit is not covered. This recall pertains to the same model number as my unit but the serial number of my unit eliminates it from the existing recall.
Approximately two hours after completing a dishwashing cycle I was alerted to the smell of burning plastic coming from the dishwasher. The dishwasher indicated that it was off but the front panel was extremely hot. After opening the door an I received burns on my arm from the extreme hot air that was escaping. Nearly all plastic dishes had either completely melted and fell onto direct contact with the heating element or were severely deformed. No front panel controls would result in the heating element from shutting off. Only turning off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher allowed the heating element to shut off. If nobody was present in the home when this fault occurred it would have undoubtedly resulted in a fire.
With the dishwasher in service mode I was able to repeatedly initiate the fault by switching the heating element on. It appears that once the heating element is switched on it will not turn off until power is removed via a circuit breaker.

I opened up the door of the dishwasher and found the wiring connected to the module control and keypad was melted down.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
The submitter set the dishwasher to a wash cycle. Once the cycle ended the submitter put away most of the dishes inside the dishwasher and closed the door. The submitter said the dishwasher appeared to be off. The submitter then went to bed.
At approximately 3:30 am, the submitter woke up to a strong burn odor and noticed it was coming from the dishwasher. The submitter said the lights on the dishwasher were off but the exterior of the dishwasher and the countertop around the dishwasher was very hot to the touch. The submitter then shut off the circuit breaker. The submitter indicated that the sprayers, the silverware tray and the some of her dishes inside the dishwasher were melted.
The submitter then contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The submitter was told that her dishwasher was not recalled and they arranged for a technician to examine the dishwasher.
A few days later the technician examined the dishwasher and advised the submitter that the incident occurred because the heating element did not turn off when the dishwasher turned off. The technician also took photographs and communicated his findings with the firm.
The submitter contacted the firm again and they offered her a discount for another GE dishwasher. However, the submitter does not feel safe buying another GE dishwasher and has requested a partial refund instead. The submitter indicated that his is a replacement and the original dishwasher was affected by a recall.
The submitter believes the dishwasher should be recalled because it poses a fire hazard.

Dishwasher was started as normal. As the cycle continued, a strong smell of burning plastic and smoke was noticed. The dishwasher was stopped. The fire department was called because of the smoke and strong odor that was present. The house was filled with the odor which made two adults and two children nauseous and light headed. The smoke and / smell / fire was a result of the electrical panel located in the upper right side of the dishwasher door melting and catching on fire.

I have a GE dishwasher that was running for about 20 min when it caught on fire. It is not on the recall list but should be as some may not be as lucky to be home when the fire starts. The smoke and fire comes from the door not the inside. I am the original owner and have never misused my dishwasher.

Our GE Profile dishwasher caught fire and melted all of our plastic ware in the dishwasher and the silverware holder. I was not running the dishwasher at the time. I removed the items that I could. Some of our dishes could not be taken out of the dishwasher. All of our plastic items melted and dripped and fused everything together. That was last night. This morning, I bumped into the dishwasher and closed the door and it started smoking again and burning.

No one hurt Made Nov 20, 2016, sent to the company Dec 1, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 15, 2016
The product, in the report: GE Profile: PDW9880N00SS Serial #: VL776001B
During a routine dishwashing cycle at approximate 9pm on 11/19/16, our 10 year old GE dishwasher, model PDW9880N00SS, began to smoke and fill the kitchen and lower area of the home with electronic smouldering smoke. No flames were observed, but the control panel area of the dishwasher was very hot from the event and showed evidence (sight, smell, touch) as the location of the smouldering event. There is burnt residue all over the top of the dishwasher door beside the control panel. The latch area is black and sooty as well.
This was not related to the heating element or anything in the dishwasher at the time. There were no meltable of flammable objects in the wash cycle.
The control panel appears to have shorted out, causing the smoulder and smoke. This appears to be the same flaw as reported in other GE Profile dishwasher models of similar design. The explanation there was water getting into the control area from the door latch opening, which seems the likely culprit in this case as well.
As far as I know, no recall for my model currently exists.
My report is similar, if not identical to, report # 20131021-5B40D-1363124 on this site for the exact same model.
I represent a townhome community of 90 homes that were outfitted with similar appliances. This is a grave concern for other homes in our community. Resolving the problem and either getting a recall in place, or understanding why that should not happen, is paramount.

Dishwasher eliment would not [shut] off and could have possiblly caused a fire. According to online reports this is a common problem with this make and model of dishwasher but ge has only recalled some of them since 2006. Since my model number is 1 above thise they claim affected they will not honor the recall. So they expect me to pay for this when it could have burnt my house down. Luckly it was caught and power turned off to the unit. Seems a shame ge will not honor someone(many of us actually) having the same issue they had a recall for

There was a smell of burning plastic in the kitchen. We opened the dishwasher and found that the plastic was melting off of the spray arm, the lower rack and the utensil basket. The heating element was very hot. We made sure the dishwasher was off and allowed it to cool down, but when the door was shut, it heated back up and began melting the plastic again. We cut the power to the dishwasher from the breaker box and called GE. They sent a technician who confirmed that it was probably an electrical malfunction.

I found my dishwasher spewing water from underneath and a strong smell of something burning. The appliance had been run through a cleaning cycle about 7:30 AM and would have finished around 8:30 AM. At approximately 10:15 AM I was in another room and heard strange noises in the house so I investigated and found hot water coming from under the dishwasher. I checked the sink to make sure there was no water in it and then immediately went to the basement and shut off the water supply and electrical current to the dishwasher. The smell from the dishwasher (electric burning type smell) was so bad I chose to just remove the appliance from my home immediately instead of calling anyone to see about a possible repair. I used a 16 gallon shop vac to vacuum the water and ended up with probably 4-5 gallons of water from the floor the dishwasher was on. There was also water in the basement that had leaked through the floor. Had I not been home this could have caused substantial damage to my home.

The product, in the report: GE Adora Dishwasher
I started my GE dishwasher, and after a few minutes I noticed a few odd noises coming from the machine. I also noticed what I thought was mist coming from the vent, which I soon realized was smoke. I immediately opened the door to cut power. I opened the door panel to expose the electronics, and one of the connectors was burned very badly. I don’t know what would have happened if I had not been present, but my feeling is that is could have caught on fire.

We accidentally came into the kitchen to find that our GE GLD6700N00WW s/n FM930165B dishwasher had visible smoke and soot coming from the latch and front panel vent area while operating a normal cycle. The main breaker did not trip and there was nothing damaged in the tub.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher. Stainless door and tub. Model number PDW9980N00SS, serial number ZM764842B
My dishwasher was 2/3 full of dirty dishes and was NOT running. I was gone about 2 hours. Came home to a house filled with acrid vile smell and haze. Found granite on top of dishwasher very hot to touch. Opened door and it was hotter than opening an oven. Hot smoke came out. We turned off breaker. Inside had several melted components. A few items in it were damaged. Tub is stainless. I believe it was a huge safety issue and likely could have had a fire it I had been gone longer. 3 hours later when I was going to bed the granite was still hot to touch over the dishwasher.
