The product, in the report: Stainless steel dishwasher

My dishwasher melted my rack and dishes in them, I started the dishwasher before I went to work that afternoon and returned 10:30pm. When I had got home there was no plastic burning smell and there was not a large amount of heat. My family was awakened at 3am with the smell of plastic burning, when we went in the kitchen it was really hot and we opened the dishwasher and it was burning everything in it and there was glass popping! We pulled the door opened and everything was melted. We could not figure out what was going on and the counter top was so hot we couldn’t touch it, this is very scary because my family was sleep. I am glad we caught it before it caught fire. I called GE and they are sending a tech out to see why the unit malfunctioned. I have researched this unit and there has been three complaints with the same exact issue, there is no recalls but complaints. I was given a claim number and we will see what else happens, this is very unsafe and could have turned out worse. And also found out they do not even manufactor this model any longer!

The product, in the report: dishwasher

(10/20/2015)The consumer stated that she ran the dishwasher through the entire wash cycle. About a couple of hours after the cycle finished, the consumer touched the door of the dishwasher, which was very hot. When she opened the door, steam came pouring out. The bottom of the silverware tray had melted and all of the silverware was laying in the bottom of the dishwasher. Also the granite counter top above the dishwasher was so hot that a loaf of bread, that was on the counter, had condensation inside of the bag. The wheels on the bottom tray of the dishwasher had also melted.

The consumer had a hard time turning the unit off. The unit stopped after a while.

(10/25/2015) The consumer opened and closed the door to the unit to show her son what had happened. When she closed the door, the unit came on by itself. The unit would not turn off. The consumer had to disconnect the unit at the outlet.

The product, in the report: GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher

I own a GE Profile dishwasher,, Model PDW9880J00SS, Serial #FG750493B. The product was subject to a recall a few years ago and the modification was performed at no charge to us. On 10/1/2015 the dishwasher was normally loaded and a washing cycle initiated. Shortly thereafter an electrical fire started in the front door assembly. Heavy smoke billowed out of the openings of door and the dishwasher stopped working.

We had to leave the house and air out the home for several hours for the smell to dissipate.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

Caller had a dishwasher she purchased from ABT Electronics in Illinois around 2006 with the only problem before the incident being reported was a repair for strange noises.

Around mid June 2015 this caller started her dishwasher, went to bed around 8:00PM and when she woke in the morning around 7:00 AM.

She went to the kitchen but felt heat coming from her dishwasher, the counters and all surrounding area. She touched the control button that read heated/dry and the dishwasher began shutting down.

After the unit cooled down which took a couple of hours she looked to see if there was any scorching but there was none.

She contacted a service repair tech who looked at the dishwasher and advised her that she was very lucky, that he was glad to be meeting her rather than reading about her.

There are no injuries being reported.

She contacted the manufacturer, she was advised that there is no recall.

She is reporting this incident as a severe fire hazard due to the extreme overheating of the unit.

The caller has disposed of the unit and purchased a new dishwasher July 2nd, 2015.

We ran our dishwasher in the evening as usual. Woke up to a burning smell in the early morning. The heating element had not shut off as it is supposed to when the cycle completes and it had begun melting everything in the dishwasher. Thankfully we were home and were able to cut off the circuit before it caught fire.

The dishwasher was running through a cycle when it started to smoke. Upon opening the dishwasher door, smoke poured out of the machine. The door was then closed and then opened again and that is when fire shot out of the top of the dishwasher door. My mother in law received minor steam burns to her right forearm. The breaker was then tripped and the unit was removed from under the counter. There were moderate burn marks on the bottom of the granite countertop. Had the countertop been built out of lumber, the fire would have been far more severe.

The product, in the report: GE Café Dishwasher Stainless Steel outer finish

Ran dishwasher in early afternoon and had cycle completed indications before opening to get dishes to feed cats. They were too hot to use so took other dishes from cabinets to feed cats. We thought it was normal that things are hot just after cycle completing so we just shut the door. We left for a family evening out about 1730 and returned about 2330. Opening entry door to house we were met with heavy smell for burnt plastics. Family members went to find all cats and open windows/doors to ventilate house while I went to check for source of smell in kitchen. Opening dishwasher door solved that. I shut the door and opened the breaker for the dishwasher in the outside breaker box. We spent the next few hours ventilating house before we felt safe to go to bed around 0230. During that time we called our master maintenance plan to get the process started and get them to our house ASAP - did not come until Monday, 08/10/2015. The next morning I took pictures (available on request) and afterwards started to remove dishes that could be broken free of the now solidified plastics.

Damage assessment: - all dishwasher safe plastics were melted beyond recognition - most plastic dishwasher parts were melted beyond recognition - e.g. flatware tray totally gone - could not move upper and lower trays - wheel damage and plastic stalactites fusing everything together - estimator report on 08/10/2015 provided us a $3500 parts and labor for just what he could see in the dish washing space - i.e. he did not disassemble to look at motor, controls, etc. - they will replace unit

Dishwasher heating element apparently never turned off last night. Started cycle around 8:30pm, went to be 11pm, didn’t notice it didn’t turn off. At 4am, woke up to burning smell. Plastic items inside reduced to puddles. Melamine dishes warped and cracked. Lost some decently expensive [REDACTED] silverware, and plastic melted onto very expensive dishes. Not to mention huge fire hazard-- adjoining cupboards had hot air inside when opened, and items were very warm to the touch. Even parts of the dishwasher were melted (wheels, silverware tray).

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher

Our Dishwasher heat cycle turned on by itself, it overheated. We smelled smoke/melted plastic, when I went to open the dishwasher, the handle burned hand and caused blisters. I used a potholder to open the dishwasher, it was full of smoke and all the plastic had melted. Including all plastic parts of the dishwasher and my plastic dishes/utensils etc.

This was a GE Profile Dishwasher, there have been multiple reports about this Model having this issue but GE has not put it on the recall list. It was very dangerous, especially because I have little kids at home. Our tile countertops above the dishwasher were to hot to touch. We turned off the dishwasher and left it open a few inches, it still continued to heat. We finally had to turn off the circuit breaker.

I called GE, the sent a repair man out to take a look at it, the cost to repair it will be over $800, I am waiting to hear back from GE to see what they will cover.

GE monogram dishwasher started a fire in the electrical panel, GE well not a valid that this is a problem and the harness is no longer made thus it is unable to be repaired. The redress that was offered was A discount on a new dishwasher-this is the second dishwasher that I have had by GE monogram that started on fire. Though I’ll refusing to replace it even though they have a knowledged that the fire was started inside the dishwasher due to no fault of my own. I told them that I want a new dishwasher because I no longer feel comfortable after two fires started in my home because of their dishwasher. They keep trying to offer me a new one at $900… I paid 1100 for this dishwasher I want a new one free of charge. This issue will be taken further if I do not get a replacement dishwasher. Had I not walked into the home both times when the fire restarted my entire house would’ve burned down. I am not trying to sound bellicose, however I just am not comfortable with an offer that doesn’t seem like a proper redress.

On 2/6/15 I was sitting in the living room with our GE profile Dishwasher Model PDW8880JSS finishing a load of dishes and it was on the dry cycle. I could see something flashing in the kitchen. I went to check and had 3 to 4” flames shooting from the front panel. I immediately unplugged the unit and doused the flames. I also took photos of the damage.

I ran my dishwasher the morning of Christmas eve. After the cycle was complete I opened it about an hour after the beep that indicates the cycle was donne. I noticed that it was still extremely hot inside and the dishes were too hot to pick up. I just assumed it was due to the drying cycle compleation. I unloaded it and reloaded it and just closed the door. I did NOT start a new cycle. About 5 hours later, I opened it to add a few more items before leaving for the night to my families. When I opened up the door I was met with a huge plume of smoke and the smell of burning plastic. The head synged my hair. I looked inside after the smoke subsided and found that everything inside including the utensal basket had melted and was lying over the heater element. All my plastic utensals and plastic handels were also melted. The sprayer arms had also melted and are lying in the heater element. Had I not opened it at that time before leaving for the night, I’m convinced my home would have caught fire.

I called the GE Consumer hotline to complain because I fount other safety recals for almost the exact mode as mine for the same issue. http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2011/GE-Recalls-Dishwashers-Due-to-Fire-Hazard/

Unfortunately it rang for 10 minutes and nobody picked up nor was there a way to leave a message. I did leave a email but have not received a response.

I also found the following complaint that indicates my same issue below. http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1263284

Our dishwasher has overheated on two occasions. The first occured over night. We started the machine prior to bed. In the morning, the entire surround structure was hot to the touch and the plastic ware in the dishwasher was melted. The heating element only stopped when we opened the door.

We had a technician come out. He discovered a faulty logic board and had us order the part for him to install. This appears to have fixed the problem temporarily. Then recently, we started a standard wash. The wash was nearly complete and we began to smell smoke. We turned off the machine and turned off the breaker. The smell ultimately diminished, but it could be smelled with opening of the door. After this second episode we have decided to purchase the dishwasher of another manufacturer.

We had a fire in our dishwasher on November 12, 2014. called GE to see if our model unit was covered by the recall of the GE Profile recall. GE said their was a recall on the GE Profile units but not the one we have. The recall is on the Profile with a different model number. That # is one with a plastic liner. The unit we have has a stainless liner. The model number we have is #PDW8800J03WW. All of the fires start in the front panel no matter the model number. I called GE to see what they will do about the problem and they stated there is not safety issue with the unit. they do not consider a fire a safety issue and therefore will only offer a discount if we would purchase another GE dishwasher. Just to make it clear the GE Profile Dishwasher is unsafe and catches fire. We were very lucky our home was not burned to the ground or worse.

On 10-16-2014 our GE dishwasher model PDW9280J03SS, Serial # TG705627B caught on fire. My wife and son were home and it was about 3:30 in the afternoon. Smoke was coming out of the top and was extremely nasty smelling. My wife immediately shut the unit down. When I came home the smell was overwhelming and I could tell there was type of electrical fire. I called GE Recall today and they said this model was made in 2004 and was unsafe to use. They instructed me to stop using the unit and we scheduled a tech to come look at the dishwasher.

I heard of the GE Profile there was type of electrical fire recall a couple of years ago and when I went to the web site my particular model was not on the recall.

The dishwasher model was not visible due to burnt marks.

The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

GE Profile Dishwasher, model no. PDW9 purchased approximately in early 2006, has short circuited. The cause was apparently water condensation that dripped onto the electronic controls (electronic control mounted inside the top of the door) and short circuited the unit. Then the heating element caught fire causing it to melt both the element, bottom rack. GE never contacted me to recall my unit. I would like GE to repair or replace this unit for due to its fire hazard.

Turned on dishwasher about 7:30 for a normal wash cycle with no heated dry. About an hour later, smelled something burning. Traced it back to the dishwasher - cut power and opened noticing the heating element was on (despite no heated dry) and very hot. The heat element was popping/sizzling. If we had not been home to notice the smell this could have resulted in a home fire. My dishwasher model type was recalled by not my specific dishwasher (serial number not one of the ones recalled). Given the similar sounding nature of our incident with the recall, it makes me suspicious that it’s the same problem.

The heated feature was never used on the unit before but he feels the heat system has a failure and might be staying on. Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a fire hazard. The most recent incident occurred 3/11/14.

He researched the unit online and found out that there was recall but his serial number did not match. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

Caller feels that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

Following the call with CPSC where this report’s data was submitted I called the manufacturer, GE. I finally got through to a live representative and explained what I had seen happening with our dishwasher in terms of the heatnig coil being very hot when no heated drying was called for and damage to items in the dishwasher. The representative said that the recal issue was related to a different issue of a serious part failure outside the tub.

I told the agent that in the over three years since the diswasher was installed we did not use heated dry and had never had a single incident of items in the lower rack meltiong and deforming. I also had never seen, at the end of a cycle, water dripping from dishes and “sizzling” when he drops the landed on the heating unit. While I wated he did some research. He came back on the line and told me that what I had seen happening might happen and was not part of the recall. No further assistance was offered.

I continue to believe that there is a problem with this machine. Since the call to GE the situation has gotten worse in terms of excessive heat in the machine. We are looking for a replacement dishwasher, from and different manufacturer, and will replace this one as soon as possible.

I am the owner of (2) GE dishwashers, model ZBD0710K15SS purchased new by me in approximately 2006, serial numbers ZL770078B and ZL770135B. Both of these dishwashers as of late have been running a motor or timer indefinitely after a cycle is complete – this is a relatively new and atypical behavior. At approximately 4am the morning of 01/09/2014 we were awoken to a strong burning smell, smoke, and a fire alarm. Machine #078B had been loaded with a few dishes the night before and had NOT been run, but the door completely closed. #078B had apparently, without cycling through a wash cycle, turned the heating/drying element on and sat in that state for many hours, completely melting most if not all plastic dishes/cups inside, the silverware basket, and melted away the plastic coating of the upper and lower pull-out racks leaving only the wire frame and melted wheels. At of today, 01/10/2014, #078B is still installed but functionally destroyed as a result. It appears to me, left unchecked, this machine would have eventually started a fire. Considering #135B is exhibiting the same symptoms of an ever-running motor or timer, I plan to uninstall both units and replace them with different units. I have pictures of the damage. I am reporting this event as both units seem destined for the same ultimate fate and desire to possibly prevent a much more serious outcome to people who may still have these machines in service.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher, model # PDW9900N00BB

I have a GE Profile dishwasher (model PDW9900N00BB) that was purchased in 2007 for $1,199.00. On 9/14/13, I noticed that it was spontaneously heating when the door was closed, even though a cycle was not running. I knew that this was a systemic problem with GE dishwashers, because the GE dishwasher I had prior to this one was recalled for the same thing. I checked the GE website but did not find a recall on this unit; however, I did find a large number of reports on the internet filed by others who have the same problem. I called GE to report it and the case manager to whom I spoke, [REDACTED], told me that she would send a repair person to look at it, and that the trip fee would be waived and the parts and labor to fix it discounted to 50%. (Obviously they know they have a problem if they are willing to discount their services this much!) The tech came and found that the bottom sprayer arm had been melted on the underside because of the spontaneous heating and said that the control unit needed to be replaced. However, I elected not to have him fix it and instead get a different brand of dishwasher since I have ZERO faith in GE. There are recalls on GE dishwashers that have this problem going back many years-it is obviously a well-known problem that they have been unable or unwilling to fix. (There are in fact numerous documented cases of home fires attributed to these dishwashers.) I am not willing to repair the one I have, or go spend a large amount of money on a new GE unit, and risk coming home to a pile of smoldering ash where my house used to be. I told [REDACTED] that I had elected to buy a new dishwasher of a different brand and asked if any portion of our purchase price could be refunded; she flatly refused since I told her I did not intend to buy another GE dishwasher. She stressed that the unit was not under recall (even though it obviously should be) so there was nothing she could do.

The consumer says the dishwasher began to put out an enormous amount of heat. He says that the unit would get so hot that he could not touch the door. He says that the plastic casing and the racks to hold the dishes were melted. He says that had they not been home it could have started a fire. The only way to get the unit to stop is to shut off the circuit breaker.

He tried to contact the manufacturer but was told it was not under warranty. They offered no further assistance. He noticed the recall and he experienced the same hazard, however his model number is not listed.

I purchased GE Profile dishwasher in 2007 (PDW7300N15CC), using it approximately 2-3 times per week. While using the dishwasher, we noticed a burning smell from the unit, almost like melting plastic, so we turned off the dishwasher and the circuit breaker. Luckily, we were home and in the kitchen when this occurred or we can only imagine what might have happened. A check online showed that a recall was issued in August 2012 for electrical failure to the heating unit possibly resulting in a fire.

The consumer says that he washed his dishes. When the cycle was done he closed the door and shut the machine off. He left at 6:30pm and came back around 10:30pm to the presence of fog and the smell of burning plastic.

The dishwasher and granite counter top were extremely hot. His wife opened the dishwasher and it was extremely melted. The fire dept was called and they said they believe the heating rod never turned off and the extensive heat relief valve did not work. The valve is supposed to turning the power off when it is too hot and it did not.

The consumer received a letter from the manufacturer in October 2012 about possibly on a recall. The consumer contacted the firm by phone and read the model and serial number and was told by the mfr that the unit was not covered under the recall and was safe.

The fire department mentioned that his house could have been completely torched if they had not come home for another thirty minutes.

He has contacted the firm via email a day after the incident and a follow up phone call and has not received a response.

The product, in the report: GE dishwasher Purchased in 2007

We own a GE Dishwasher, model PDW8700N00BB, serial # SM886165B. It was purchased in 2007 along with an extended warranty that expired in Nov. 2012. The inside cavity is stainless steal. Last week my wife put in a load of dishes and went upstairs. I came home to find a pervasive smell of burning plastic. When I opened the dishwasher some smoke escaped. I found that inside parts had melted and that part of the washer arm had broken off and was burning against the heating element.

The next day I called GE and their “Consumer Advocate” went into defensive mode. She tried to insist that the burning plastic was not toxic, etc. She scheduled one of GE’s techs to look at it and he affirmed that a mechanism in the door failed and caused the heater to remain on and go into overdrive, thereby boiling the water and melting down the inside parts. He said he had seen this a few times before. He called it ‘very dangerous’, etc. He supposedly reported it to GE’s division that handles technical failures.

When the Consumer Advocate called back the next day she affirmed the above. Her offer of a remedy was that I should pay GE over $700 for a new dishwasher. When I stated that my family was at risk due to their machine’s catastrophic failure and that it might be related to the issues causing other models to be recalled she essentially said ‘take it or leave it.’

After a limited amount of surfing I found other examples of similar events with this model. I am requesting an investigation. In addition, I believe that despite the dishwasher’s extended warranty ending a few months ago, GE should replace it in light of what appears to be a serious defect.

    Thank you!

In addition, when I opened the washer the bottom jet was melted onto the heating element. Also the only way to cut power to the element was to shutoff the circuit breaker, the panel control did not let you reset or shut the cycle off.

What is disheartening is that if this was a plastic tub dishwasher it would be on the recall list. Having the same controls system and obviously faulty design or components, why was this not included? I feel If someone were not home at the time this could have turd into a different situation resulting in a house fire.

GE Dishwasher (Model # GSD4200J00WW) . I started dishwasher as I normally do. Left house for extended period of time (24 Plus Hrs) and returned to find the timer/selection rotary switch had not moved from the plate warmer setting. Also the motor was running and the heating element was still on. Also noticed that the detergent cup had not opened and the dishes were dirty, as if no water had been introduced. I had several plastic lids in the top rack that had melted down onto the bottom rack. Smell of burnt plastic throughout the house as well. I had to unlatch the door to stop the machine. The switch wouldn’t budge. I also shut it off at the house electrical panel as well to be sure it was off. Seems very dangerous to not have some type of thermal shutdown in case of an event like this. I contacted GE and there only offer was to “discount” another dishwasher. Well....their idea of a discount was about $100 more that I could buy one and have it delivered and installed. rather ridiculous I think. Even though the unit was out of warranty, there was an obvious malfunction that could have been catastrophic. I will go out of my way to avoid any GE appliances in the future since I felt their lack of concern and less than fair offer doesn’t deserve my patronage.

GE Dishwasher that was a part of the August recall. We had it repaired for the recall on August 22, and today it caught on fire, filled my house with black toxic smoke. Thank God we were at home with the dogs instead of at work. We disconnected the power and have called GE who is going to send their investigative crew out as soon as possible.

So I think people need to know that their repair doesn’t work. People could be living with a fire hazard and think all is well if they had the recall fix applied.

Scary to think that the house and the dogs would have been lost had we not been at home to react so quickly.

    October 26th 2012

General Electric Company 3135 Easton Turnpike Fairfield, CT 06828

    Re: My Defective Dishwasher

    To Whom It May Concern,

I have a GE dishwasher model # GSD3230Z04WW, Serial # HV853063B, that has been repaired over five times for a sparking and burning smell. I did look at your product recall notice and saw almost the same model number. When I called your helpdesk they told me that the unit was not recalled, and they were not going to offer any replacement. The problem with the recalled units was the fact that the liquid from the soap dispenser leaked on the lower wires causing the unit to either catch on fire, do dead, or spark. My unit was sparking, has soap liquid on the wires, and then became dead before repairs were competed. For whatever reason, this unit should have been on your recall list. It is a fire hazard and I do not want it after five repairs.

This letter is a documented warning that should this unit cause any injury or death to any person(s) and / or fire damage to my premises, I will file legal action against the General Electric Company.

    Sincerely yours, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher installed in a kitchen counter.

Product is a GE Profile Dishwasher Model# is PDW8800J03CC and Serial # is VG834000B. The unit was bought in late 2004 and installed early 2005.

The dishwasher had been started and my family was about to leave the house when my son interrupted the wash cycle by opening the door. When he opened the door, a large cloud of foul smelling smoke filled the kitchen. When the door was closed, the wash cycle restarted and more smoke came from the hole in the door where the latch is. A black sooty residue was around the opening. I disassembled the door to see if the problem was easily correctable, but there was significant fire damage to the electrical components and ribbon connections. To prevent any further electrical danger, I uninstalled the dishwasher and removed it from the house. I took pictures of the damaged components and reported the problem to GE the night of Oct. 16 (I have not gotten a response yet).

Please let me know if you would like the pictures or any other information. Thank you.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher

My GE dishwasher currently has a voluntary recall in place as of August 2012. Among the solutions was the option for GE to have an installer replace the heating element to prevent house fires. Sounded like an awesome idea to me, and we did it. Service work was done on August 27, 2012.

On September 15 2012, I loaded the dishwasher normally around 8pm, did some other junk, and went to bed. A guest in my home that weekend awoke to our house full of smoke. Upon investigating the source, we found the dishwasher hot to the touch, as well as the granite counters and any adjoining cupboards and contents. Smoke rolled out of the dishwasher, which we quickly cut the power to, and began to air out our house. The inside of the dishwasher tub was completely melted, along with the spray arms. I lost a pile of dishes, and the interior was hot enough for some silverware to melt COMPLETY THROUGH the bottom of the dishwasher. This was discovered at around 9am, therefore the dishwasher must have been on the dry cycle for roughly 12 hours.

GE needs to know that their quick and dim-witted heating element fix is clearly not the issue. I’ll be letting [REDACTED] know for sure, since we very nearly experienced a house fire where we, our four children, and an out of town guest were sleeping. I had a 15 year career as a firefighter, and I can promise you that our kitchen was maybe 15 mins or less from flames showing. I am filing a complaint with GE Corporate, and a handful of others. My family was put in danger AFTER the required recall work was performed. GE needs to be forced to recall every one of these dishwashers before someone is killed. We are proof that their fix does not work, and I have photos if you would like them. I attempted to upload them to this report, and it’s not working. I can email them much easier. Also, the victims listed in the report are listed because all 7 of us inhaled toxic burning plastic smoke for hours while we slept. All of us woke up with sore throat and headache until the place aired out, which took 24 hours.

    Thanks for your time, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: We have a black GE dishwasher model no. GSD3300N00BB and serial no. HM828832B.

In 2007, we purchased a GE Dishwasher with our [REDACTED] home. The model no. is GSD3300N00BB and the serial no. is HM828832B. After using the dishwasher, on at least one occassion there was smoke that could be seen coming out of the top of the dishwasher. When we opened the dishwasher, the heating element was burning and there did not seem to be water running to cool it off. After that point, we decided to never run the dishwasher when we were not home since it seemed like a potential fire hazard. The dishwasher has done this on at least 4-5 occasions. It generally seems to happen on the pot and pan cycle so we try not to use that cycle. We are currently searching for a replacement dishwasher since we have a young child and the potential for fire is not worth the risk to our son. I just wanted to make sure that I reported the problem we were having in case others were experiencing similar problems.

Re: GE Dishwasher Recall dtd 9 Aug 2012

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

The enclosed hard copied email to GE Consumer Relations will outline adequately the basis for this letter. We had purchased two identical (save for Serial Numbers) Dishwashers in 2004, one of which, identified in Exhibit A, failed in early August as described and depicted in photo IMG 5195 jpg (Exhibit B). This is the type of failure that led to the GE DW Recall dated 9 August 12. The other DW, thus far without failure, is identified in IMG 1082 jpg (Exhibit C).

I include you in this dialog because, while the Serial Numbers of our DWs fall outside the range included in the Recall and are not eligible for recompense or replacement, the failure was nonetheless serious and potentially dangerous, the more so as the DW in question has the vulnerable plastic floor pan. We are awaiting GE’s response to our letter.

Perhaps your mission could include a conversation with GE, suggesting that the range of eligible DW Serial Numbers be expanded to include all such failures or incipient failures. Prevention is as worthy a goal as is recompense.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Good day,

I choose this email format rather than yours to facilitate attaching two pics relevant to the problem. Lacking your email address despite efforts, I hard copy this and the attempted attachments as photographs. Please forgive me.

This week, coincidentally with your recall notice of 9 August, our GE dishwasher (GSD6200GOOBB) bearing Ser. No. GF750482B (pic IMG 4644 jpg) experienced heater element failure (pic IMG 5195 jpg) of a sort described in your recall. Exploring this failure, we find that our DW, purchased in 2004, is not covered by your recall, despite the identical nature of the listed failure.

We were, fortunately, able to have the DW repaired by competent persons, and have saved the defective, burned out heater element for inspection. Ocracoke Island, on the Outer Banks, presents a challenge in obtaining certain services.

My request is that this issue be considered for appropriate reimbursement for parts and labor just as if the DW Ser. No. were within the range listed in your recall notice referenced above. Perhaps that range should be extended.

    Thank you for your attention.

The following morning she opened the dishwasher door and noticed that the panel in the door looked as if it was melted from the inside.

The consumer did not contact the manufacturer, she purchased a new dishwasher.

The product, in the report: GE built-in dishwasher

I am writing to report a fire which was caused by one of the recalled GE dishwashers. The fire occurred on 03/16/2011, at my parent’s home (address below).

Just after completion of the dry cycle, my 86 year old mother opened the dishwasher door to remove the dishes and flames shot out of the interior of the dishwasher. My mother described the fire as being similar to what she (and I) had experienced in the past when the heating element in the oven burned through and set the oven on fire.

The fire rapidly spread to the adjacent cabinets and caused significant damage before my 90 year old father was able to halt its spread with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters, whose station is about 2 minutes from their home, arrived shortly thereafter, put the fire out, and cleared out the smoke.

Fortunately, no one was physically injured. The only reason that my mother’s face and arms were not burned is that she was standing to the side of the dishwasher, rather than in front of it, as most people would have been. She had a shoulder problem which made it easier for her to open the dishwasher door from the side. Both of my parents are in ill health and have heart conditions. Imagine what could have happened if the fire had occurred after they went to bed, or if the fire department had not been close by.

Although there were no physical injuries, the psychological injury was significant because of my mother’s unique circumstances. My mother is a survivor of the largest and final battle of WWII in Europe, the Battle of Berlin, which ended with Hitler’s suicide and German surrender. Over the course of 16 days, much of the city of over 4 million people was leveled by bombs and fire. Approximately 20,000 civilians and 180,000 troops were killed in that single battle, and more than 1 million left homeless. Needless to say, she is terrified of fire. Two days after the fire she had a stroke. She believes that stress related to the fire caused her stroke. She had horrible nightmares and flashbacks to the battle for months.

The fire was investigated by [REDACTED], [REDACTED], Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Town of Hamden, CT. His phone # is [REDACTED].

The damage was covered by my parents’ insurance company, The Hartford. The claim number is [REDACTED]. The insurance company paid out about $13,000 in damages. A detailed list of the damages is attached to this report.

I ran my GE dishwasher (model number PDW9980N00SS )in the morning and about 4:30pm I started to smell plastic burning. Upon opening the dishwasher with my infant son in my arms,a cloud of smoke poured out and irritated my eyes. I closed the dishwasher and turned off the power source. The fire department looked at it and told me plastic had melted onto the heating element. After they left my husband took a closer look at it and discovered the wheels, and basket had started to melt. We called GE and they sent a technician out the next day. The technician said the control panel malfunction and the heating element never turned off. He then proceeded to tell me it was no longer under warranty and not part of the recall. I paid $329.93 to have it repaired. I contacted GE again to inquire more about the recall and after getting the runaround from two representives, getting disconnected, and being on hold for a total of three hours, I final spoke with a supervisor and she refunded me my money. She said that my dishwasher model is under a program that they are looking into but is not part of the recall. She also stated that even thought the heating element didn’t turn off it eventually would have and wouldn’t of caught on fire. I feel that the product is unsafe and she looked into further.

The consumer says there was a horrible smell with the unit while it was washing. It was ok 45 minutes later. She says there is a thick, heavy grey smoke emitting out of the door. She says she had to turn the fan on. The consumer says they are certain there was nothing at the bottom inside of the dishwasher. It smelled like burning rubber mixed with something else. The smoke and the smell came from the door where the controls are. She says that they had to shut off the circuit breaker. CONSUMER ADDED: The appliance was part of the new home purchased on June 15, 2005. As soon as it happened on 8/17/12 I called GE and was referred to Safety concerns. Their phone line was a 45-60 minute wait with no call back offered. On Monday 8/20/12, I left a message and they called back, they have been notified. I was told they did not want me to keep the dishwasher nor the door for research. I did not want a GE service call--we bought a new dishwasher of a different brand.

The product, in the report: GE Nautilus Dishwasher Model GSD3400G00WW Serial LH7375548 cheaper model with manual dial to start wash cycle

Today’s news mentioned a GE dishwasher recall because of fire danger. I typed in my model and serial number on their website and it said it was not included. I don’t remember the installation date but in the last 5-6 years. GE should have my info as I had to have a service call before the 1-year warranty expired for black mold growing around the drain. My Nautilus GSD3400G00WW is not on the recall list but it should be - it’s already come close to burning my house down. I didn’t report it because it was out of warranty. I turned it on one night around 10 pm a few months ago on Normal and went on to bed. About midnight the smell of scorched wood woke me up and I hurried to the kitchen in a panic to see what was on fire. The dishwasher was still running with the dial stuck between START and SHORT WASH and had just kept getting hotter and hotter. The formica countertop above it was so hot I couldn’t lay my hand on it. I flipped the lever and opened the door and a thick cloud of hot steam just exploded out and nearly knocked me over. All the detergent had scorched onto the dishes since it never got to the first rinse. The dishes were blistering hot, it took a long time for them to cool down. I had to scrub them by hand twice to get the slick coating and smell off them. I couldn’t afford a new dishwasher at the time so I just washed dishes by hand for a couple of months. Then decided to try a different cycle and test it - put it on Pots&Pans and it ran without the dial hanging up. I’m still using it on P&P with no problem but I don’t dare leave it unattended. If I hadn’t left the bedroom door open that night to where I was able to smell the scorched wood odor and wake up when I did and get it shut off, the kitchen would surely have caught on fire. Being in the center of the house it would have all gone up in flames before the volunteer fire department could have gathered up all its men in the middle of the night and made it over here. They need to add Nautilus to their list!

The product, in the report: GE Profile Quiet Power II Dishwasher Model No. GSD4030Z07WW

On Monday, August 6, at approximately 10pm. I had put the dishes in the GE Profile Quiet Power II dishwasher, turned it on, and gone to bed. My roommate was up studying for an exam, and came to get me when he heard strange noises coming from the dishwasher. I ran downstairs, could smell electrical fire smoke, and quickly opened the dishwasher. When I did, flames starting coming out of the bottom of the door shooting inside the dishwasher. I quickly closed the door, sent my roommate for the fire extinguisher (kitchen ABC powder type), opened the door and put out the fire, having to put the hose at bottom of door and aim within. The plastic of the door had already begun to melt from the fire. We turned off the electrical switch to the unit.

Had we both gone to bed, the result could have been a disaster, as the flames were quile large and intense. I also checked to make sure that nothing had disloged or blocked the mechanical action of the dishwasher. Nothing had. It appeared to be electrical in nature judging by the electrical fire smell and source of the flames. There was no fire damage in the tub itself to indicate that it came from the heating coil at bottom.

While this dishwasher was new when I bought the house in Oct. 2001, it has never had any problems or been repaired. It worked well until the date of the fire. I am having the unit hauled away today by Sears, who is installing a new KitchenAid. This is my second GE appliance to have electrical issues, so I’m giving up on GE.

On 6/26 approx 1:00pm my wife was outside and could smell burning plastic. She ran inside the house and found the dishwaser (GE Quiet Power 1 Model # GHDA455L00CS) was billowing smoke out of the front panel. She opened the door to the dishwasher and cut power to the front panel. This, luckily stopped the process. She then called me at work to let me know about it and I asked her if anything was on the heating element. She inspected it and found nothing. I did a search on the model number and came a cross the GE Dishwaser Recall and checked to see if this model was involved. It was not. I contacted GE customer service and they put me in touch with GE Consumer Relations who opened up a claim number. A repair man came to the house the next day and looked it over. It was deemed unrepairable due to the lack of availability of the wiring harness. The connector had melted and the main board (WD21X10247) was burned through. I feel a fire was averted by the luck of my wife’s presence and quick thinking.

while my wife was washing a normal load of dishes she started to notice a smell like something was on fire. When she walked back in to the kitchen she noticed that our dishwasher was on fire, luckily only internally and it did not affect any kitchen surfaces.

The motherboard control unit is completel charred, and of course, the unit is now inoperable, and likely beyond repair. My biggest concern now, as luckily no one was hurt, is that this model appears to have been manufactured between the 2003-2006 recall, and is not included on the list, despite the fact it appears to suffer from the same defect as units recalled.

We purchased a GE Model PDW9980N00SS dishwasher in the fall of 2006. It is serial number SL882153B. On Sunday evening, April 8, 2012 we used the dishwasher as usual, and my wife remembers hearing it complete its cycle. The next morning, however, we smelled melting plastic and the granite countertop above the dishwasher was very hot to the touch. We opened the dishwasher and the heater was still on and running very hot. The dishwasher’s had melted hard plastic glasses and cracked hard plastic bowls that were dishwasher safe and that we had previously washed many times. Apparently the dishwasher’s heater had run all night at a higher temperature than usual. The heater remained on for 10 to 15 minutes after we opened the dishwasher door and heat continued to come out of the dishwasher. The heater eventually turned off after we repeatedly pressed the stop button multiple times over several minutes.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

I started the dishwasher and just a few minutes in to the cycle, white smoke started pouring out of the front of unit. It smelled of burning electrical parts. I immediately unplugged the dishwasher. Although it didn’t smell like it, I thought that possibly some dry powder soap had spilled on to the heating element. I cleaned everything and when I tried again, the same problem occurred. My roommate also examined the inside of the dishwasher and everything seemed fine. We used the dishwasher several times without incident and I thought that the problem was fixed. Last night I used the dishwasher as normal and the smoke came back AGAIN. Again, I promptly unplugged the unit, opened all of my windows, and turned on all of my fans to rid my house of that awful burning smell. I am afraid to use the dishwasher again.

At 3:00 a.m. on Easter morning, I awoke to the smoke alarm going off. The house was filled with smoke, so I followed it into the kitchen and saw flames through the crack on the door of my dishwasher. I unplugged it and opened the door. Flames shot up to and beyond the top rack. Almost all of the door on the inside was melted and my dishes were ruined. I immediately extinguished the flames and opened the house to get rid of the horrible smoke. Water was all over my floor.

While the consumer was operating the dishwasher on the hot pans cycle and heated dry. Half way through the cycle the appliance started smoking thru the vent of the control panel. She estimates that the cycle is approximately about 45 minutes long.

The home filled with smoke so the consumer grabbed her children and placed them outside. The circuit breaker was pulled and he consumer unplugged the plug from the outlet. The applance stopped smoking when she shut it down.

The heating coil in the bottom of the appliance inside melted to the door. She contacted the firm and went through the automated system where it indicated that her appliance was not affected by the recall. She left a message for a representative from the firm to follow up with her on 3/12/2012.

The applaince is currently unplugged and has not been used since the incident occurred.

The product, in the report: GE Nautilus Dishwasher, Model # GSD2200G02BB

The product is a GE Nautilus dishwasher, model # GSD2200G02BB. When starting the dishwasher, the water frequently will not start but the heating element still heats up. This creates for a dangerous situation that can lead to fires as food particles alight. When this first started, we noticed it b/c of the amount of smoke coming from the dishwasher. The problem can be overcome by restarting the dishwasher cycle. Now when we run the dishwasher, we wait patiently and listen carefully to make sure water is entering the unit. If we don’t hear any, we restart the cycle. This usually works after 1 or 2 attempts.

    No one has been injured.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher

Our dishwasher was serviced last year for the recall for this model. Last weekend, it erupted with thick, acrid smoke pouring from the door during a wash cycle. A technician opened it to find the so-called “remedy” in place (a temperature sensor), which obviously did not work as designed. The control board was badly burned, as was the wiring harness.

Fortunately I was at home and was able to get to the breaker box to cut the power. My concern is for all the other dishwashers that have been “repaired.” In my opinion, this remedy is neither sufficient nor reliable.
